Redevelopment envisioned for shopping center Streets at SouthGlenn may add more apartments, offices, entertainment

The shopping center in Centennial is poised to undergo redevelopment that will likely add apartments, office space, other retail and entertainment businesses in the coming years.

The tide of big-box redevelopment has hit The Streets at SouthGlenn, where a recently closed Sears and a Macy’s whose days may be numbered are likely to be redeveloped in the coming years.

A crowd of more than 100 came to a March 19 meeting inside that empty Sears, where some residents voiced concerns about traffic in the nearby neighborhood and a need for affordable housing in the area. Developers and City of Centennial staff shared information and answered questions at that open house-style meeting.

“With dramatic changes happening in the retail industry due to changing consumer preferences, traditional retail centers throughout Centennial and the United States need to start looking at non-traditional retail uses like entertainment-based retail and non-retail uses to reinvigorate the centers,” said Neil Marciniak, Centennial’s economic development manager, in an email.

Here’s a look at what could change at SouthGlenn, located at South University Boulevard and East Arapahoe Road, as plans move forward.

can be built where in the city — Northwood and Alberta need the city’s approval to make certain changes.

What could change Northwood wants to turn the Sears property mainly into apartments, with retail possible on the ground floor, said Kyle Whitaker, a development manager with Northwood.

Alberta wants to put apartments and office space, and possibly retail and entertainment — think something like Lucky Strike Bowling — where Macy’s stands, within a few years.

Demand doesn’t appear to be sufficient for a hotel at SouthGlenn, said Donald Provost, founding principal with Alberta. Northwood doesn’t have plans for adding a hotel at the moment, Whitaker said.

On both the Sears and Macy’s land, 800 apartment units could be possible on each property, but Alberta is aiming for about 400. It’s hard to say how close to 800 the number would be for Northwood, Whitaker said. Its plan is for five stories, based on the market, he added.

percent to 20 percent higher in price than the current apartments at SouthGlenn, where a one-bedroom’s lowest price range is $1,465 to around $2,300.

A possible green area with a fountain could also be added to the Macy’s land, Provost said.

Timeline The Macy’s isn’t likely to close in the immediate future, but developers have to think about the possibility, Provost said.

“I’d be surprised if it was here in five years,” Provost said.

Sears closed near the end of last year.

Whether the plans go through is still up to the city’s determination of whether they meet the requirements of the city’s Land Development Code, which sets zoning districts and design standards.

After some preliminary talks, city staff and developers met with a group of 14 representatives from homeowners associations in the area to talk about opportunities and constraints associated with possible redevelopment March 5. On March 18, staff updated the city council and the

History of SouthGlenn SouthGlenn was originally the large, indoor Southglenn Mall built in the 1970s, and the Sears and Macy’s were components of that mall, said Marciniak, the city’s development manager.

It “is now a successful lifestyle center with main street elements that make it one of the top retail and entertainment destinations in Centennial,” he added.

SouthGlenn’s outdoor shopping center layout replaced the former mall in 2009.

The Macy’s building was constructed in 1981, according to Arapahoe County assessor’s records. Macy’s West Stores Inc. sold it to Alberta in February 2018 for $10 million, records show.

Remaining relevant Despite the drastic changes in the retail industry in recent years, SouthGlenn has the potential to stay successful, Marciniak said.

“Offices, a variety of residential types (and) activated public spaces have the potential to help these centers evolve and remain relevant while providing housing opportunities for existing and new residents, attracting new companies to the city,”’ Marciniak said, “and ensuring Centennial residents have a high-quality neighborhood destination.”

Planning and Zoning Commission — citizens who make development recommendations to council — about the plans. The March 19 community meeting at Sears will be followed by a second meeting likely in late April.

After that, Planning and Zoning will hold a public hearing and decides whether the plans meet the city’s code.

If approved, the plan moves to a city council public hearing, which makes the final decision on whether the plans meet code.

Senate bill would address youth mental health needs Stronger system of care would result in cost savings, better outcomes, officials say

Kari Eckert lost her 15-year-old son, Robbie, to suicide five months ago.

The Lakewood High School student was an athlete, a leader, everyone’s friend, Eckert said. She saw no signs of struggle.

“Robbie struggled silently and he suffered alone,” said Eckert, sitting in a small room at the state Capitol on March 21, an hour before a bill aimed at curbing youth suicide would go to a Senate committee for debate.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee unanimously agreed to send the bill to the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Eckert was joined by parent Leslie Kobi, who spent eight years fighting for her son’s mental health, and Heidi Baskfield, vice president of Population Health and Advocacy at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Also in attendance at the intimate press conference were Sen. Rhonda Fields, D-Aurora, and Rep. Lois Landgraf, RColorado Springs, sponsors of Senate Bill 19-195.

The bipartisan bill addresses what public officials and health experts

call a youth mental health crisis. In Colorado, suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 10-24, and one in six teens has a diagnosable mental health condition, Children’s Hospital reports.

Over the last decade, the hospital has seen a six-fold increase in admissions to its emergency departments and urgent care locations following a suicide attempt.

Fragmented services, a shortage of screenings and costly care are some of the barriers to adequate mental health care, experts and advocates in the field say.

“Our hospital continues to serve, in a way, as a warehouse for kids with complicated mental health needs because the system is not there to support them out in the community or in their own homes,” Baskfield said.

SB 19-195 — which is also sponsored

by Sen. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, and Rep. Tracy Kraft-Tharp, D-Arvada — aims to create that system.

The bill would create the Office of Children and Youth Behavioral Health Policy Coordination in the governor’s office, along with a commission and advisory council.

The commission would serve as a “behavioral health backbone” for the state, with representation from counties, the Legislature, multiple state departments, the state attorney general’s office and others. It would work to increase public awareness of youth behavioral needs and facilitate

ALEX DEWIND collaboration between communities, state departments and political subdivisions, the bill outlines.

The commission’s immediate actions would be to implement cost-effective “wraparound” services — which provide a continuum of care for young people with complex needs — develop standardized assessment and screening tools, and design an integrated funding pilot project, according to the bill.

For the 2019-20 fiscal year, the bill would increase state spending by at least $1.3 million, according to the bill’s fiscal note. Over time, legislators say the bill would save $25 million to $30 million by reducing the need

for extensive, costly mental health services, such as inpatient care and residential treatment services.

Although the bill has a long way to go before it reaches the governor’s office, backers are confident it will go through.

“I think this is one of, if not the most, important bill we are going to see this session when it comes to health,” Landgraf said. “You can’t put a price tag on any one of these kids.”

Eckert agreed, emphasizing the significance of screening and assessing children for mental health issues.

“If Robbie was asked those questions,” she said of her son, “maybe he would be here.”

Minor beneficiaries of your Will may be required to receive their inheritance at the age of majority, which is 18 in Colorado, or 21 at the latest. You (via your Will) or the court will appoint a custodian to safeguard the money for them until legal age, but Wills usually cause them to receive it in one lump sum at age 18 (or at the latest, age 21). If you have minor or adult beneficiaries who are not as established as you’d like them to be before receiving their full inheritance, their inheritance could be squandered.

A Will doesn’t keep assets in the family. Picture your daughter divorcing after receiving her inheritance. Unless she has been pristine in not commingling

funds with marital assets, it’s highly possible her ex-spouse will walk away with 50% of what you worked so hard to leave for her.

A Will doesn’t protect your beneficiary with special needs from losing his governmental benefits. If you have a beneficiary who relies on needsbased government benefits, a distribution from your Estate could cause him to lose those benefits or be required to sign his inheritance into a Living Trust that is payable to the State upon his death.

His comedy gives black-and-white conversation a new hue

C

omedian Sam Adams had just finished auditioning for a commercial the afternoon of Aug. 22, 2018, when he saw the text from a friend: “Dude, you are blowing up Facebook.”

A video showcasing a piece of his routine, which Dry Bar Comedy filmed in 2017, was catching fire. Called “True Color,” it took a humorous look at race by pointing out we aren’t truly white or black, but rather shades of many colors. It had a million views and counting.

He drove to his Parker home, loosAnn Macari ened his tie, sat on the couch, stared at Healey his phone, watching the number of views on his Facebook homepage climb. He switched to his laptop, hitting the refresh button every five minutes: 1.4 million. 2 million.

3 million.

Messages poured in, from Germany, Switzerland, Vietnam, across the U.S. “I’m going to go the hardware store now — I bet I’m Paisley Pink.”

“We are Sahara Sands and Cashmere Pink.”

“We love this.”

Adams was stunned.

“Some people had already gone to the hardware store, sending me pictures of them holding up paint chips,” he remembers. “It was just mesmerizing.”

He stayed up until 4 in the morning, answering every message, saying “thank you, thank you,” posting smiley faces.

Eventually, the video surpassed 29 million views.

And Adams — whose true color, he will tell you, is not black — took a breath.

“I think people are tired of the divisiveness that comes with race,” he says, sitting in a Starbucks recounting the moment, still as awed by it seven months later as he was then. “With race, I can’t solve it. I’m gonna try to make you laugh about it — maybe the humor makes you think about it differently.”

••••• In Harrison, Arkansas, a town of 13,000 people in the heart of the Ozark Mountains near the Missouri border, the “True Color” video popped onto Veda Remington’s Facebook feed.

She smiled as she watched, then promptly shared the video with friends — one of them Eric Stefanski, president of the Ozarks Arts Council who also books acts for the local theater.

“I feel like racism is something that people battle against or something they try to hold onto — it depends on which side of the coin they’re on,” says Remington, a mother of two young boys who has lived in Harrison all but a few of her 26 years. “That bit spoke to me in such a way — stop worrying about what you’re not, identify

Stefanski, 56, also a longtime Lutheran pastor, loved the routine, too, and thought Adams just might be a game-changer for the town.

“We have a reputation we have to live down,” says Stefanski, who moved to Harrison about 19 years ago with his wife and their two young daughters. But “for all the attempts people make to get rid of that reputation, really the only way to get rid of it is to have someone who understands the problem in the country and who is able to look at it with humor, is not afraid to address it and who can bring people together.”

So, on Aug. 23 at 10:17 p.m., Stefanksi

emailed Adams’ agent with an invitation to perform in Harrison’s Lyric Theater in the historic district of a town that has been called the most racist in America.

••••• In 2001, Adams, now 59, was a sports writer — he covered the Broncos and other sports teams for The Denver Post and the defunct Rocky Mountain News. He did stand-up comedy at night as a hobby. On Tuesdays, his day off because the Broncos had the day off, he would head to Cherry Creek mall, one of his “think-tank places” for comedy ideas.

On this day, he was standing on the second floor, peering over the railing

at the children’s breakfast-themed play area below. Kids were playing on the curvy strip of bacon, the fried egg, the waffle. He didn’t see the little boy, but his voice carried clearly through the air: “Look at all the pink people.”

The words struck Adams: “There’s a little kid who sees actual color. He’s looking at white people, but he’s not calling them white. He sees the true color.”

That night, he tried out a new routine.

“I don’t know why we say black and white — they’re the blandest colors on the color wheel,” he told the audience.

“This mic stand is black. I’m brown.

White people, you’re not white. Grab a napkin, put it on your hand. You’re pink. It had people laughing, no matter where I did it.”

With some polishing, he thought, that could be his signature bit.

It was in McCook, Nebraska, about six years later, that Adams — by then working full-time at comedy — nailed the home run.

He was wandering around in the small town’s Super Walmart, killing time before his show, when he saw the paint chips in the hardware area. He grabbed some brown ones, noticing the funny names.

“This really old man asks: ‘What are you doing?’ ” “I’m trying to find my true color.” “ ‘Well, you’re black.’ ” “No, I’m not. I’m Hoot Owl. Other shoppers in the area start gathering, thinking maybe I’m confronting him.

I say to the old man, ‘Let’s see what color you are.’ I grabbed some pink ones, put it up against his arm. You’re Papaya Smoothie. Now people are laughing — they see what’s happening.”

That night, the mic stand is black.

Adams is Hoot Owl. He pulls out the chip. The place erupts.

“Every time I went someplace, I went to Walmart, got some more paint chips. They didn’t all have the same ones. Caramel Nut is my favorite.

Sumptuous Spice, this is my all-time favorite. Chocolate Indulgence. I have four that I like. I just like saying them.”

••••• Mike Raftery, Adams’ agent, forwarded him Stefanski’s email. “What are your thoughts on this?” he asked.

“I think Mike thought I would say ‘I don’t think so.’ ” But Adams took a long look at the offer. He researched the town, read the stories about its past — and its present.

White race riots in the early 1900s drove out all but one of the 115 black residents, who although poor were a vibrant community with deep roots, according to The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture.

Today, the head of the Ku Klux Klan, designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, lives 15 miles from town. News photos show the driveway to his compound lined with Confederate and KKK flags. Harrison is the organization’s postal address, and white-pride billboards sometimes appear along roadways, news reports say.

The 2010 U.S. Census put the town’s population as 96 percent white and 0.3 percent black — who are generally students at the junior college or employees at the FedEx freight carrier company, Stefanski says.

The Community Task Force on Race Relations, founded in 2003, openly acknowledges on its mission statement the town’s ugly history and racial challenges, and emphasizes its commitment to promoting diversity and an inclusive environment. A victory: In 2016, the town won the Dream Keeper Award, given by the state’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission for noteworthy efforts to improve race relations, specifically among young people.

With some resident-organized peace rallies and town-sponsored diversity marches, as reported in local news accounts, Harrison is working toward rebranding its image.

But the past lingers. The reputation still makes African-Americans reluctant to live there, Stefanski says. And there are still people in the community who display prejudice and hate toward others different from them, Remington says. Her late grandmother was one.

But, she says, “The majority are not that way.”

She credits her father — whom she describes as a man with a heart open to all kinds of differences — for instilling in her the creed “that people are people, that women and men need to be respected equally, that color doesn’t define a person.”

“We have some really truly wonderful people that live here,” Remington says of the town she learned to love in recent years, when she started looking for the good.

In the end, the astonishing reaction that “True Color” had inspired in so many people around the world persuaded Adams to accept Stefanski’s invitation.

“Race stimulates conversation, positive and negative, like no other topic,” Adams says. “It’s really just a comedy bit, not intended to stoke political fires.

But the people, in their comments, were finding a message they deemed positive in that conversation about race. For me it’s a funny-yet-true look at skin tones. Nothing more. But if people believe the bit can be a positive in the conversation, then I will deliver it. To do it in place where the reputation is stained with racism, I wanted the challenge.”

••••• Adams knows racism. He heard it, saw it, felt it. He attended, he says, one of the most racist high schools in America in the 1960s and ‘70s in Cleveland. But his first experiences with discrimination started earlier.

junior high school, walk down the street. It was eerily quiet, sun’s out, too silent. Then white kids would pop out from behind the trees, throwing rocks.”

During a drive to visit family in Georgia one July, a 9-year-old Adams and his family stopped at a restaurant.

They ordered waters and soda. A little boy in a nearby booth asked for a soda, too. His father said no. The boy noted Adams’ sister, then 3, had one, but referred to her by the N word. It was the first time Adams had felt the word directly aimed at him or his family. It made him feel small. He and his family walked out.

“I knew a lot of white kids were sort of hiding behind this thing that’s been passed down ... the cloak of racism” as he calls it. But “in class we would see how people really are. I was in band — the same kid who played trombone in the brass section, laughing and joking with me, was the same kid who would pop from behind the tree and throw rocks.”

And Adams thought: “ ‘I know who you really are — you’re the trombone player, you’re not the rock thrower.…

Eventually that’s how we worked it…

I’m just going to be me — when everybody started being themselves, things started getting better.”

He looks back on that time and wishes he’d displayed more leadership, more willingness to try to defuse situations, to find a way to connect.

Humor, he thinks, could have been a good tool.

••••• On Dec. 6, Adams flew into Little Rock, Arkansas, then drove to Fayetteville, about 75 miles from Harrison.

He wasn’t afraid. He was concerned, as he would tell his audience the next night.

He had prepared, trained, for months.

“Like a boxer getting ready for a big fight. . . . I let myself believe I was going to fight racism.”

He studied the town’s everyday life to find ways to connect. He knew the high school football team was on a winning streak and congratulated it in promotional videos for the show. He found the diversity task force’s Facebook page and contacted it to gauge interest in his show. He knew about the town’s annual hot air balloon race.

He envisioned every possible scenario — from no one showing up to the performance to being the target of heckling or violence — and how he would respond.

As Adams left for the drive to Harrison, he made sure his gas tank was full.

He bought plenty of water and snacks so he wouldn’t have to stop along the way.

In Harrison, he parked by the town gazebo. The night was cold, quiet.

Whatever happens, happens, Adams thought, as he got out of the car.

He looked up and saw the Lyric Theater across the street, its neon sign announcing: “Comedian Sam Adams Dec. 7 @7:00.”

He met Stefanski inside. They exchanged pleasantries, talked about how to introduce him. Make your announcements and I’ll just walk on, Adams said.

As he did, a loud roar swelled through the hall, where almost all 350 seats were filled. Adams’ knees slightly buckled. The cheering seemed to go on and on.

He hadn’t envisioned that scenario: “What if you go out there and they give you this great ovation? I didn’t know what it meant to them.”

Sitting in the audience for her first comedy show ever, Remington felt her heart fill.

“It just validated for me that the town is what I like to believe it is, and that we have people here that are supportive and find good humor, and they’re not what our reputation says we are. . . .

Just to hear the entire place light up like that — it was incredible.”

A few seconds of silence passed as Adams composed himself.

Stefanski finds it difficult to capture the moment in words. “It was a matter of him being honored and us being honored. It’s hard to describe apart from being there — it’s kind of one of these awesome moments.”

Time flew. Adams’ 45-minute show stretched into 90 minutes. He emptied his bag of fun. At the end, he invited people to shake his hand or have a picture taken with him for $5 — to raise money for the local food bank, which Adams had read was in need of donations.

There was the 13-year-old girl with the pink-and-white “I (heart) comedy” sweatshirt who wants to be a comedian.

And the woman who told Adams he would never know how much this meant to the town, because by showing up he had helped dissolve some of the reputation they were working so hard to erase.

“It was my pleasure to perform for them,” says Adams, who was deeply moved by the warm reception. “They were genuinely nice to me … I saw that they weren’t what the internet portrayed them to be.”

The crowd that night was mostly white, with a few Hispanic women, Remington says. But a cross-section of the town had shown up, Stefanski says — politicians, businesspeople, everyday residents, young and old.

And after the show, many lingered in conversation.

“I would have never seen them talking to one another,” Stefanski says.

“That dialogue is exactly the sort of thing we have to have going on here.

That’s where a lot of things are going to get repaired.”

Adams, who is most likely returning to Harrison for a fall show this year, still has his original paint chips — Hoot Owl, Caramel Nut, Sumptuous Spice, Chocolate Indulgence. He also has the paint chip a woman in Harrison handed him that night. On it,

she signed her name, circled the Peach Medley shade and wrote “We love you.

You are great!”

The paint chip sits on his desk, in the “me” room, alongside the trophies and photos with famous people — a reminder of an unforgettable night in which hundreds of true colors swirled into a tapestry of humanity at its joyful best.

Capturing ‘true essence’ I love people — I absolutely love them. I can find the good and the special in just about anyone. Being able to capture the true essence of someone and show people who they are in just a simple photo is joyful for me. I love being raw and real with my clients.

Even a traditional family portrait has a little bit more life in it than just the sit-and-smile faces. I like to take families to places that reflect who they are as a family. My favorite is just letting the kids run around and have fun so I can capture who they really are.

We moved to Centennial in August 2012. My husband and I have four kids: three boys and one girl. We wanted a home that had a larger yard. So many of the newer communities have teeny-tiny yards, and we wanted something more substantial for our active kids to run around in. I’m a bit of a mother hen, so sending them off into “open space” just didn’t sit well with me. Also, we wanted to make sure our kids were in the best school district and attended the best schools within that district.

So that’s how we ended up in Centennial.

We are very active in the community through the school, sports programs and also our church. We volunteer at our church and in our schools.

Back in film days I am a professional photographer. I was always into photography. I studied it in high school during the film and darkroom days and have always had a love for it.

Art for one, art for all Littleton’s Paint Box Guild artists on display in Centennial

Next time you hit the gym, you could leave with a painting from your local art scene.

As part of South Suburban Parks and Recreation’s ongoing art displays at recreation centers, pieces from the Paint Box Guild — a Littletonbased group of artists that goes back decades — are hanging, for sale, at Goodson Recreation Center in Centennial.

“We’ve been an organization since 1973, but still, a lot of people don’t know about us,” said Fredia Cox, the guild’s president. “So we try to exhibit anywhere there’s wall space.”

The not-for-profit group includes 40 active members, and the art on Goodson’s walls included many watercolor, oil and oil pastel, and other types of pieces that ranged from as the $300s to as low as $35.

Paint Box Guild supports beginner artists, but it also provides the chance to rub elbows with longtime members of the local art scene, like Cox, who has been with the guild since 1988.

Arapahoe High School teacher suspected of sex assault Sarah Porter, 24, taught Spanish; faces two counts

Arapahoe High School teacher Sarah Porter was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child on March 22, according to a letter from Littleton Public Schools Superintendent Brian Ewert.

Porter, 24, has been Porter charged with sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust and sexual exploitation of a child.

Porter has taught Spanish at the school since August 2018, according to Ewert’s letter. She was an assistant volleyball coach last fall and has been an assistant track coach for the past few weeks.

Porter is accused of sexually as-

saulting a 16-year-old boy she was coaching in track, according to an arrest affidavit.

A tip sent to Safe2Tell, an anonymous reporting system, said that Porter had kissed a student, according to the affidavit.

The student later told investigators that Porter had sent him nude photos and videos of sex acts, and forced herself on the student and threatened him if he resisted, the affidavit says.

Porter is currently being held in the Arapahoe County jail without bond, according to court and jail records.

Porter is the second teacher at Arapahoe High School to be arrested on suspicion of sex assault on a student in recent months. Drama teacher Ian Ahern was arrested in January and charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Anyone with information in Porter’s case is asked to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office at 720-874-4020.

The men’s college basketball season began last November and it will end in April at the intimate U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The stadium has a capacity of 66,655. It’s where the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Gophers play their home football games.

The stadium opened in 2016.

Despite requests for a “bird-friendly” exterior design by the Audubon Society and others, the stadium’s designers used highly reflective glass for “aesthetic reasons.”

The stadium is in the Mississippi Flyway route, and resulting bird deaths are double any other building in Minneapolis.

season will end in April as well, at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

The arena opened in 1996 (as the Ice Palace), and seats 20,500 for basketball, and it is a much more sensible choice.

Some fans at the U.S. Bank Stadium will be so far away from the action that they won’t know who won until they get home that night.

I have attended regional and Sweet Sixteen games in the past, and even a Final Four, when the Final Four games were played in basketball-dedicated facilities.

But when someone figured out how much money could be made, the finals were moved to these behemoths.

At its best, basketball is a wonderful and very simple game. It even can

App lets you visit Arapahoe jail inmates from anywhere STAFF REPORT

A new app allows family members and friends to virtually visit an inmate in the Arapahoe County jail from anywhere with internet access. The Anywhere Visit social media technology

by Securus Technologies launched March 5 in Arapahoe County.

“A friend or family member who wants to visit their loved one will no longer have to come to the visitation center at the facility to do that,” bureau chief Vince Line said in a news release.

“This will save them time driving to the facility and potentially avoid child-care issues. It will allow everyone to connect more often with inmates.

It will also allow family and friends to visit who otherwise cannot get to the facility due to their location in the world, or perhaps due to health issues or disabilities that would prevent them from coming in person.”

Through the app, 30-minute visits can be scheduled any day from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. The Securus app is free to download. The cost for a 30-minute remote visit is $8.99 — 27 percent of the fee goes to the vendor and the rest goes into a fund that supports inmate programs. We would rather not acknowledge or give credit to our faith and hope when good things happen in our lives or as we meet with happiness and success.

My experience and belief tell me that when we do have the courage and conviction to share our faith and hope openly, it moves from being the hardest part to the easiest part of having the faith, keeping the faith, and sharing the faith philosophy.

The more we do it, the more comfortable we become, and the more comfortable we become the greater our chances become of truly being a difference maker in the lives of other

walking among the affected Muslim community wearing a hijab out of respect and genuinely comforting the surviving family members. Shortly after that, she made a bold public commitment to get the assault weapons (used in the shootings yet meant for warfare) out of the hands of regular citizens.

With her leadership, she was able to get support from across all political divides. Why? Because it was the moral action to take. How? Through decisive crisis leadership. She didn’t wait till she talked with her gun lobbyist or major campaign donors. She stood up, said it, and took action for her constituents.

Granted, this is only the first part of triage — stopping the bleeding, so to speak, of her com-

munity. Next comes the harder part — addressing the root cause of the problem.

This is where you and I as global citizens come in. Getting to the root cause is our job as fellow humans living in community with each other. We can blame our public officials or “someone else,” but they are only mirroring back what you and I have elected, what we have consciously or subconsciously chosen as our leaders.

There is no “us or them,” we are them.

It is our job (in addition to our leaders’) to look at Christchurch, New Zealand, as we should have done with Pittsburgh, and acknowledge that they too are our brothers and sisters. No matter someone’s faith, or no faith, or citizenship status or ethnicity, we are all humans. We are all interconnected as fellow inhabitants of this ball we’re living on together.

The root cause is the myth that we are separate from each other so we feel the need to be fearful or

hateful of one another.

We can tinker all we want with gun legislation or mental health services (and I hope we continue to do so), but even more foundational than that is the need for basic acceptance and empathy for one another as people just trying to live our lives as best as we can.

Until we do that as a community in our country or state, we will continue to see hate crimes, homicides, suicides, and people locked inside their homes with a gun or baseball bat at the door in fear. Is that really how we want to live? I say we’re better than that.

Now, we just have to prove it.

hen Jenn Ray’s son Dylan was 2, he started showing signs of sensory processing disorder and autism.

“His brain struggles to filter out all the sounds of life that you or I can filter out without a second thought — the dryer going in the background or a drippy faucet,” Ray said. “I didn’t always know how to help him find his peace.”

But soon she discovered a miracle: hiking.

“It was the first time I noticed he slowed down,” Ray, of Littleton, said.

“He wanted to take in every single aspect of the trail: bugs, plants, flowers, weeds, sticks and rocks.”

These days, Ray and Dylan, now 6, go hiking every chance they get, and are branching out into far-flung destinations: Moab, Fruita and the Great Sand Dunes among them.

“This time in nature has really changed the lives of my son and me, and it’s where some of our best memories have been made,” Ray said.

More creative, less aggressive Dylan’s peace in the wilderness is no fluke, said Rosemary Dempsey, the communications director for Great Outdoors Colorado, or GOCO, an organization that uses state lottery proceeds to preserve and enhance Colorado’s outdoors.

Getting kids outdoors pays big dividends, Dempsey said.

“We know that playing outside is important for many facets of a child’s development,” Dempsey said. “There’s an increasing body of research showing that kids who play outside are more creative, less aggressive, less stressed, and even show fewer ADHD symptoms.”

One of GOCO’s signature campaigns is Generation Wild, which encourages parents to get kids outside.

“On average, we’re finding that many kids get maybe four to seven minutes of unstructured outdoor play time a day,” Dempsey said.

“That’s compared to hours of screen time. Doctors are starting to literally prescribe outdoor play for kids.”

Parents don’t need to light out for the territory to connect kid with nature, Dempsey said.

“We can experience the benefits of getting outside just out the back door,” Dempsey said. “It doesn’t have to be a daunting experience.”

Part of the struggle is overcoming stigmas that come with modern parenting, Dempsey said.

• Roxborough, southwest of Littleton, is famed for its soaring sandstone spires.

• Chatfield, also southwest of Littleton, is a boater’s paradise, but the park’s south end features tranquil cottonwood groves for strolling.

• Golden Gate Canyon west of Golden has dramatic views, and for those who want to unplug, no cell phone service.

Getting dirty For some parents, instilling a love of nature and fostering independence go hand-in-hand.

“Letting kids outside, they learn their limits,” said Rebekah Eddy, a mom of two from Parker. “They’re able to understand what they’re capable of and what they’re not.”

One of the Eddy family’s favorite hikes is Maxwell Falls, west of Denver off Highway 285. Daughter Ella, 3, sometimes runs ahead of the pack — and Eddy lets her go.

“She’ll turn around when she feels too far away,” Eddy said. “Instinctually, kids need to develop their own sense of danger. They’ll either do it when they’re kids or when they’re adults.”

Eddy grew up in Montana, and her husband Jason grew up in Alaska, so sometimes the suburban landscape of Parker can feel a bit blah.

“As kids, we’d run all over the place with zero supervision, so when we went house shopping, it was bizarre

to look at houses with tiny yards and no trees,” Eddy said. “We bought the house with the biggest yard we could find.”

Eddy is happy to let her kids get muddy.

“The natural world is generally safer than the constructs we put up that we think are safe,” Eddy said. “We’re increasingly in a sterile environment, and it affects immune systems. Synching your system to the natural microbes in the world is an answer that’s right in front of us.”

Learning to deal with discomfort is crucial, Eddy said.

“I tell my kids: it’s OK if you’re cold,” Eddy said. “Our generation, for some reason, wants so badly to take away all levels of discomfort.”

Eddy’s methods are paying off, she said.

“Nolan can’t even say `mama’ yet, but he can ask: `outside?’ ” Out there For parents who are ready to venture beyond the backyard with their kids, tempering expectations is important, said Rebecca Ferrell, a spokesperson with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Parents worry kids raised in a world of high-octane entertainment will get bored on a trail, Ferrell said, but Denver is surrounded by top-notch state parks and open space parks that offer ways to keep them interested.

“Are they into dino fossils? Wildflowers? Birds? Try to connect the hike with things from their favorite movies or shows, for instance,” Ferrell said.

For Jenn Ray and her son Dylan, trail time will always be family time.

“Some of our most meaningful conversations have happened on the trail,” Ray said. “That time is just priceless.”

History, located in the Byers-Evans House, 1310 Bannock St., Denver, opens a new exhibit on March 30, spotlighting movements that highlight women’s involvement and where they drove the change. The exhibit will run through March 2020. Free admission to gallery.

‘Beehive’ is all about the music Lone Tree Arts Center show explores sounds of days gone by

e wondered if Lone Tree’s director/choreographer Candy Brown had ever performed in “Beehive” during her long career.

“No,” she answered, “I’m not really a singer — I’m a dancer who can carry a tune … But I grew up with this music. It’s a new experience — I never did a show that doesn’t have a book. (A script.)

Of course we had the Brown invasion from England then. But this just goes from song to song to song.” She says there are elements in the set that evoke her teen years …

Imagine: Aretha Franklin, Lesley Gore, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, the Shirelles and more …

She expects the audience will consist of people who lived through the era — and hopes it will put a smile on their faces.

“Maybe they’ll remember their first white buckskin shoes … If you’ve never seen it before, there’s no particular dialogue with the audience — nothing said to the audience — three or four songs, then another little set-up …” Think: “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Proud Mary,” “Me and Bobby McGee …”

The cast is local and includes: Sharon Kay White, Piper Arpan, Sheryl Renee, Karen Jeffreys, Melody Moore, Valerie Igoe.

Shannan Steele is understudy.

The music director is Dr. Michael Williams, a keyboardist and director who teaches music and has performed with Cleo Parker Robinson, at the Aurora Fox, at Denver Center and more, including the recent “Lady Day at Emerson Bar and Grill.”

“They’re not `Singin’ MamaJamas,’” Brown said. “We’re not trying to imitate Amazon … We hope for happy memories, nothing gimmicky…”

Brown hasn’t met the band members yet. (They always appear late in the rehearsal process.) “That’s always my favorite part when doing a show (when musicians appear). “We always rehearse with a piano until the end. Hearing all the instruments can change the delivery of a song.”

Brown says she grew up in California and her married son lives there with a 4-month-old new grandbaby. “I’m very happy here — I teach — I don’t perform anymore.” But she worked with the best in New York — Bob Fosse, Hal Prince (still living), and was a participant in the history-making workshop that resulted in “A Chorus Line,” and appeared in ”Hello Dolly, the tour of “Applause” and in television productions, commercials and films.

Fitness studio offers new workout Row House will have instructor-led rowing classes

Highlands Ranch is getting another boutique workout studio — with a new concept.

Row House, a class-based rowing studio, opens its doors April 11 at 9358 Dorchester St., Suite 104, on the southeast end of Town Center.

The franchise is the first in Colorado and one of three planned for the south metro Denver area. Other locations are expected to open in the next year or two in Lone Tree and Parker.

Its head company, Xponential Fitness, is behind popular brands like CycleBar and Club Pilates.

Denver resident Anne Johnson is the franchise owner and area developer. Originally from St. Louis, she left corporate America in January 2018 to start her own business. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs, she said. She considered home health care but loved the boutique studio concept.

“I’ve always been into fitness,” Johnson said at the studio’s soft opening on March 21. “I knew that I wanted to find something that was new, that sent a good message and was inclusive.”

Row House brings a new workout to Highlands Ranch. The boutique fitness studio opens Thursday, April 11.

Performed in a dark room with 24 rowing machines, the 45-minute classes offer a full body workout. According to Johnson, legs do 60 percent of the work on the machine. Arms and abs do the rest.

Tara McGlynn, an instructor at the Highlands Ranch studio, was an

athlete for many years. Rowing, she said, is easier on her joints and for the most part painless — though some workouts leave her feeling sore.

“I feel strong,” Mcglynn said of rowing. “And confident.”

Johnson said she strives to offer an inviting, judgment-free workout.

o-do lists are a fairly common feature of daily life in the 21st century, but it turns out this organizational method has been around for centuries — just ask Italian Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci.

While most of us have things like “do the shopping” or “clean the kitchen,” items on da Vinci’s list involved things like finding a way to measure the size of the sun and study the tongue of a woodpecker.

Insights like these are among things visitors to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s “Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius” exhibit can learn about one of humanity’s most adventurous thinkers.

Tips for spring and summer gardening

t’s that time of year, where our hemisphere comes to life, and that means your gardens are ready for some sprucing up, observation, and finally, Take a walk around the yard It’s been months since time has been spent in the garden so it’s important to walk around and observe changes. Maybe the perennials you planted in the fall didn’t make it. This will help you stay ahead of any bare spots or unwanted aesthetics as you prepare to grow.

New plants Colorado has a unique climate, sometimes making it difficult to know when to plant.

Landscaping plants should go in late spring or fall, while edible gardening plants can go in various times of the year from March to September.

Sometimes the weather moves these schedules around.

Prune By removing dead and old plant matter your plants can thrive. Be sure your pruning at proper lengths and times, as each plant is different. A quick google search or email to Rooney Bloom can make all the difference in the life of your plants.

Compost area After trimming and raking, you’ll have organic matter that can be a great addition to other parts of your garden. Most counties offer a composting service, however if not, start one in your backyard! Just remember brown (dead organic matter such as sticks), greens (apple cores, leftover lettuce, grass trimmings) and water!

Never use pesticides These kill and gravely harm creatures/pets, people and our environment. There are a plethora of other ways to address invasive species and unwanted creatures into your garden. Try industrial strength white vinegar for weeds, or planting African marigolds to keep bindweed away! Speaking of...did you know Lavender repels fleas?

A shovel, set of loppers, garden shears and rake will get you started strong. Ensuring these are in your “tool kit” will save you time and money. Make sure you know how to use these tools properly, they’ll become a good ally in the yard.

Organic mulch Mulch assists in suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, and improves soil fertility as it decomposes. Using mulch to top off your veggie garden or flower beds helps, especially in Colorado’s arid climate. BE SURE the mulch your purchasing is organic and hasn’t been treated with dyes.

Exhibitions worked with the Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome and experts from Italy and France to build replicas of da Vinci’s inventions and paintings. They also created replicas of his books, notes and sketches, gathered in codices, or manuscripts from that time.

“What creates a person that is so far advanced, perhaps more so than anybody else in history?” asked George Sparks, president and CEO of the DMNS. “Our staff spent a lot of time working to make this exhibit our own at the museum as we thought about these questions.”

Using the man’s notes from his codices, creators were able to build reproductions of about 70 of da Vinci’s inventions, including crude attempts at machines like a helicopter, airplane, car, submarine and military tank. The replicas are made using the materials and techniques of 15th-century Italy. Some of the inventions are scaled down, some are life-sized and others are oversized and some have mechanisms visitors can try for themselves.

As da Vinci is most well-known for his artwork, his creations in the medium take a special place in the exhibit. There are print reproductions of his Florentine oil paintings, like “The Annunciation” and

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in Anchiano, Italy, near the Tuscan town of Vinci. He was born out of wedlock to a notary and a peasant woman. da Vinci never received a traditional formal education. His natural gifts caught the attention of his mentors.

He moved to Milan around 1481 after convincing Duke Ludovico Sforza of his talents as an artist and engineer. His work began to expand to studies of architecture, military engineering and strategy,

mechanical flight, theatrical production and music. da Vinci began “Mona Lisa” in 1503, but the painting remained unfinished at his death years later.

He accepted an invitation from François I to move to France in 1516.

After suffering a stroke in 1517, da Vinci died on May 2, 1519, in Clos Lucé, France. He is buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert in the castle of Amboise.

“Virgin on the Rocks.” There is also an animation of “The Last Supper,” which provides a look at what makes it such a unique work.

One highlight of the exhibit is the use of the state-of-the-art SENSORY4 technology, which uses high-definition motion graphics and surround sound, combined with authentic photography and video footage. The end result gives the visitor a feeling of being immersed in da Vinci’s mind.

Unsurprisingly, its da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” that gets the most in-depth exploration. The exhibit provides an analysis of the iconic painting conducted at the Louvre by scientific engineer and photographer Pascal Cotte. According to the museum’s information, the display includes super-magnified examinations, a 13-foot-high infrared print and the only 360-degree replica ever made of “Mona Lisa.”

The museum prides itself on bring-

ing its own touch to the exhibits, and that shines through in the presence of the museum’s enactors, who will

be wandering through the exhibit as characters who bring a personal perspective to the story of da Vinci and the age in which he lived.

As da Vinci neared the end of his life, he supposedly said “I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.” Experiencing the exhibit, it becomes difficult to believe that anyone could have achieved more. Instead, and by design, it invited the visitor to consider what da Vinci would think about modern advancements.

“We want people to ask themselves, `What would Leonardo think?’ about life today,” Nash said. “I think, if nothing else, his to-do list would be much longer and more interesting.”

Kenneth Coddington was longtime educator Fixture in Littleton community grew up in South Dakota, was devoted to local church

Well-known Littleton educator and community figure Kenneth Coddington died on March 10. He was 78.

He was born Aug. 19, 1940 in Hawarden, Iowa, grew up in Centerville, South Dakota and received his bachelor of arts degree from Sioux Falls (South Dakota) College in 1962. He taught sixth grade in Sioux Falls and attended the University of South Dakota, receiving his master of arts degree in 1965, then became an elementary school principal in Mitchell, South Dakota. While there, he met Barbara Anderson and they married June 15, 1968. They moved to Iowa City, where Coddington earned his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in

1972. Their son, Matthew, was born in Iowa City.

The family moved to Littleton, where Coddington became principal at Mark Hopkins Elementary, the beginning of 28 years as an elementary school principal in the Littleton Public Schools. Son Steven was born. Principals’ offices at Lenski, Ames and Wilder followed before he retired in 2000. Despite a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 2000 he remained active. Littleton United Methodist Church was important to the family and he sang in the chancel choir and served on numerous committees.

Travel, photography, video editing, gardening and woodworking interested Coddington and he traveled on Habitat for Humanity missions and with the Bega-Littleton Sister City

organization. He belonged to the Littleton Breakfast Optimists Club and worked with youths through that organization. He sang with Voices West (formerly the Littleton Chorale).

Littleton’s Western Welcome Week Board named him grand marshal in 2016, as an honor to him and to past educators.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, sons Matthew (Michele) and Steven, a granddaughter, brother, sister-in-law, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 S. Datura St., Littleton at 10 a.m.

April 6.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Parkinson Association of the Rockies, the Michael J. Fox Foundation or the Littleton United Methodist Church.

lizabeth Hernandez learned a lot last season by watching.

Hernandez, a senior at Littleton, had an injured groin and sat out most of last season, so this season is a comeback year.

The 5-foot Hernandez has played a big role in the Lions’ fast start this season.

“I was injured so I stopped playing halfway through the season,” she explained. “I was going to be out for six weeks. Yeah, for sure, this is a comeback season.

“It’s been going really, really good. I just like the new coaches (head coach Andrew Coons and player development coach Alex Rios) and the new style and everything. Not being able to finish the season last year, I’ve come out harder this season.

“I did learn a lot from the seniors last year.

Being on the varsity my freshman year, I have improved a lot. Especially the dribbling. I never really had the courage to dribble in a game.”

Lionel Messi. I really look up to the way he plays and how he dribbles and how he can do whatever he wants and controls the game just by himself.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

I think my parents. They have really helped me out a lot in everything I’ve wanted to do. That has been a huge motivation for me.

What do you think about the U.S. women national team’s suing the USSF? I honestly think women do deserve equal pay. The sport is the same for both genders.

I don’t see why women should get paid less for doing the same thing as men.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I like writing a lot, just what I’m thinking and feeling.

What improvements do you need in your game?

I want to get better with split-second decisions and just try not to think about it right at the moment.

Colorado roots shape game of premier women’s golfer

ennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest won the 2018 women’s NCAA golf championship and then soared to No. 1 in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), which she has held for 23 weeks dating back to last July.

And this is a golfer who developed her game in Colorado, where it is often OVERTIME difficult to keep all the basics of a competitive golf swing tuned during the winter because of elements like sub-freezing temperatures, snow, slush and ice.

“Yeah, it was Jim Benton a little difficult,” said Kupcho, who won two Class 4A girls state high school individual championships while playing for Jefferson Academy in Westminster.

“I guess it was kind of good for me just because it is cold in the winter, so I played basketball pretty much my whole life. I played that during the winter and it kind of gave me a little time away from golf.

“I haven’t got burned out and that’s the main mistake with juniors nowadays. They just get burned out and don’t want to play later.”

Kupcho will be honored for her stellar 2018 accomplishments by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame as the Amateur Athlete of the Year at its annual awards dinner on April 3 at the Hilton Denver City Center.

“Both my parents (Mike and Janet) play golf and I have an older brother (Steven) that started playing. It sort of became a family thing. My brother and I both loved it and we became pretty competitive. That’s how it all started.”

Last season she was a first team Women’s Golf Coaches Association All American, broke her own Wake Forest record with a 70.60 scoring average and became the first wireto-wire NCAA champion since 2002. Kupcho was also a member of the victorious United States Curtis Cup and Palmer Cup teams.

Kupcho was the runner-up in the 2017 NCAA championships when she wound up losing by one stroke after recording a triple bogey on the 17th hole.
