Meals on Wheels needs a new home — fast Nonprofit that delivers meals to homebound people has until Christmas to find a new kitchen

TLC Meals on Wheels has helped keep thousands of seniors and people with disabilities in their homes.

Now, the nonprofit needs the community’s help to find them a home of their own.

TLC, now in its 50th year, has operated out of the old Ames Elementary School in Centennial for the past decade, using the cafeteria and kitchen to prepare hundreds of meals every day to distribute to homebound people.

But a Littleton Public Schools bond passed in 2018 calls for tearing down and rebuilding Ames before reopening it as an elementary school, and recent architectural planning means TLC Meals on Wheels has to be out by Christmas.

That means the group has to find or build an affordable large-scale commerical kitchen in the south metro area — fast.

And it’s not going to be cheap.

“This is huge,” said Diane McClymonds, TLC’s executive director. “This organization has never had a chal-

Anyone over age 60 can automatically qualify for visits from TLC. People under 60 are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Clients with the means are invited to pay up to the full cost of a meal, which is $4.

Nobody is turned away for inability to pay, however, and nearly half of TLC’s clients pay nothing at all.

TLC is always eager for more volunteers in a variety of roles.

Caseload, costs growing Though plans are still evolving, McClymonds said it’s looking like they’ll need $2 million or more to lease or buy a new building and outfit it with a suitable kitchen. She called it a heavy lift for a group with an annual budget of $700,000 — most of which goes directly to food purchase, preparation and distribution.

TLC prepared 128,000 meals last year, McClymonds said, distributed to 813 clients across the south metro area.

DAVID GILBERT The caseload has been growing in recent years, said Kathy Kreidler, the president of TLC’s board of directors.

The group is currently delivering about 450 meals a day, Kreidler said — about double the caseload in 2009 when they moved into Ames. Recipients are asked to donate what they can toward the full cost of a meal, which is $4. Nobody is turned down for being unable to pay.

In the past, Kreidler said, about a third of recipients were unable to donate. Now, the number is up to about 44 percent and growing, as rising housing costs squeeze seniors and the disabled.

High-volume kitchen needed With the caseload growing, it’s more important than ever that TLC have a kitchen that can handle high volume cooking, Kreidler said.

“We can’t just use any old restaurant kitchen,” Kreidler said. “It will take a ton of time to find the right place, and in the meantime, we’ve got to keep the program going.”

Littleton Public Schools may have a spare kitchen for them in a few years when a variety of construction projects across the district are finished, but that timeline isn’t set in stone, and it would be a pain to move to a new facility only to pick up and move again in a few years.

Renting a facility might cut it, but that leaves the group susceptible to rent hikes or eviction.

That leaves buying a facility of their own, Kreidler said.

“The opportunity is huge,” Kreidler said. “If we could fundraise enough for our own place, our expenses would go up, but we could swing it.”

Mid-legislative session Q&A: Jack Tate

State Sen. Jack Tate, R-Centennial, serves in Senate District 27, which includes Centennial, nearby unincorporated Arapahoe County areas and the Town of Foxfield. The small-business owner was first elected to the state House District 37 seat — representing a similar area to his current one — in 2014.

He was appointed to fill a vacancy in his Senate district the following year and won the election to hold the seat in 2016. Late last year, he announced he would not seek re-election in 2020.

Tate sat down to discuss what he’s accomplished and what’s yet to come during the 2019 regular session, the four-month part of the year when legislators pass bills. It ends May 3.

QA

Has the session so far met, exceeded or failed to meet your expectations?

For me, it’s exceeded. I continue to be involved in specialty legislation related to economic developments, finance and technology. I’ve already had several bills signed by the governor, including the first bill signed by Gov. Polis, on updating statuses related to the alcoholic beverage Tate industry. In some ways, I’m already personally way ahead of my own schedule, so I’m pretty satisfied thus far.

What are some of the bills you have sponsored so far?

Twenty-four bills. Already had four signed by governor. Last year, my prefile bill was the affordable-housing tax credit. We’re extending that again this

year with more money.

(There were) a couple bills that kind of liberalized our ability to get patients prescriptions, either from a pharmacist or a convalescent center, rather than having to rely on a doctor at the surgery center. Kind of dealing with barriers that have existed to people getting medication on a timely basis. (There have been) unfortunate tragedies because folks couldn’t get hold of a doctor in Colorado. Currently, medications at the second location require (approval) from a doctor at the first location.

What do you plan to sponsor down the stretch?

I also have a bill coming out initiating a study about applying blockchain technology to water-rights management.

Probably the main thing left to deal with is a bill to (address) surprise bills that consumers can get from out-ofnetwork doctors. Trying to create a

framework that protects consumers but at the same time does not allow insurance companies to take advantage of medical providers and doctors by price-fixing.

What is the most important thing the Legislature can do between now and the session’s end?

Probably slow down on a lot of controversial legislation that’ll have a detrimental impact on our economy: (on the) oil and gas industry, payroll tax that funds a state-sponsored paid time-off program, and another bill that creates an easy way — under the guise of pay equity — it really opens the door to a lot of lawsuits, which will bog down businesses’ ability to do what they’re supposed to do.

Dems are the governing party, and absent their taking pause on their own, we don’t really have that many tools to slow things.

Mid-legislative session Q&A: Tom Sullivan State House District 37 lawmaker discusses ‘red flag’ bill, workers’ issues

Has the session so far met, exceeded or failed to meet your expectations?

I’m not overwhelmed by what is happening in front of me. So I’m just moving along, continuing to do the work, having conversations, learning more as we go along — so yeah, I think it’s the way I kind of thought it Sullivan was going to be.

What are some of the bills you have sponsored so far this session?

These are the things we talked about at the doors of voters the last three years. The extreme-risk protection order (“red flag” bill), we talked about that each and every day. We were talking about victims’ rights; we were talking about work-

ers’ rights. We ran a bill waiting to be signed by the governor, to have a minimum of two people on freight train crews.

Plus, a bill (about to be) signed into law is on income tax liability for active-duty military ... It has to do with, when they get moved out of state, but their home of record is still Colorado, it (creates a tax issue). If they retire or leave service, we want them to stay here.

What do you plan to sponsor down the stretch run of this session?

We’ve got one on the workforcediploma pilot program for a workforce development program through our high schools and community colleges for apprenticeship programs. And we’ve got an apprenticeship program we’re working on as well — those are some things from my labor background, working for workers’ rights. The workforce pro-

gram is coming up on House Education Committee on March 26, and the other apprenticeship program will be an education bill out of the Senate.

What is the most important thing the Legislature can do between now and the session’s end?

I think we need to continue to talk and not obstruct. The people of the State of Colorado elected us to actually govern, and that’s what we’re trying to do. Some of the shenanigans, those kinds of things need to stop. The people want us to debate the issues, and that’s what we should be doing rather than doing things where they’re having you read bills at length. That’s not getting anything accomplished. We’ve got a lot of great programs we’re trying to enact here, and the voters have asked us to do that … I hope we can keep things moving.

As more law enforcement and fire agencies across the state encrypt or consider encrypting their dispatch radio traffic, a bill was introduced March 12 that seeks to halt the trend.

Blocking the public and news organizations from listening to scanner communications has spurred debate in recent months between media analysts, who say the information is necessary for government transparency, and public-safety leaders, who argue encryption can keep personnel safer.

Death penalty could end Colorado’s criminal justice world could see a symbolic shift if Democrats succeed in ending the death penalty.

Lawmakers have tried before to repeal Colorado’s death penalty, which has been applied just twice since 1967, the Associated Press reported. The bill would apply to offenses charged on or after July 1, 2019.

Mid-legislative session Q&A: Susan Beckman

Beckman was first elected to the office in 2016, and won re-election in 2018.

Colorado Community Media did a brief Q&A with Beckman amid the 2019 legislative session.

Has the session met, exceeded or failed your expectations and why?

It’s failed. It’s such a hyperpartisan year. There are bills being moved through very quickly, and people in the communities are angry. The sex education bill was bad, but that’s only one.

The popular vote bill will take away

our voice in Colorado. The red flag bill sounds like it will help, but it allows for a spouse to fill out an affidavit to enable civil courts to issue criminal warrants to confiscate guns with no due process. It is a huge diversion from where we’ve been before. I ask people: what else will government Beckman come into their house for?

What bills have you sponsored?

I sponsored a bill that would have banned urban encampments along rivers, but it died. We know the pollution around those areas along rivers is high. We know cities and health departments are heavily burdened with having to clean these encampments up. We’re going to have a public health crisis if we don’t clean up our water in some of these areas.

I had another bill, that also died, that would have required needle exchange organizations to track their needles so we’d understand how many we were giving out or taking back.

Right now, they’re being left in our parks and along our trails.

What do you plan to sponsor down the stretch run of this session?

The “senior homestead exemption.” it’s a tax credit to help keep seniors in their homes, which waives property taxes on the first $200,000 of home value. Seniors on fixed incomes depend on that. You have to be in your home for 10 years to claim it, and I want to preserve the exemption for seniors who relocate due to medical necessity.

Democrats have introduced bills that will reduce or eliminate the credit.

I’m also working to make sure ACC gets additional dollars. Last year I

The board of review considers appeals to the building code. Applicants

They need to be cautious they don’t crash the economy. I saw the bust of 1983. I worry that with the rest of the nation easing up on oil and gas regulations and us tightening down, that industry will go somewhere else. It’s billions of dollars into our economy and tens of thousands of jobs.

I worry about a march toward more control and taxation. There are things happening here that people don’t like.

We have such great people here in Colorado who love freedom and think Colorado’s exceptional. I hope we can keep it that way.

while driving. It was approved 26-9 on March 15 and moved to the House for consideration.

Senate Bill 19-012 would make use of cellphones while driving — except with a hands-free device — illegal for everyone. Currently, state law bars anyone under 18 from using cellphones while driving.

Score the interview: Tips on building a healthcare resume A template resume may work well in most industries, but when it comes to jobs in healthcare, the key to success is all about being specific.

Applying for a job in the healthcare industry requires extra time and a focus on the details. Some tips to be successful in applying for a healthcare job includes: Be specific in the objective: Don’t just send a general resume listing your past work experience, education and an indirect objective first line. Look at the description for the job you are

applying and spend the time to make your resume match the job.

Make sure you highlight your skills and abilities as truthfully as possible.

Those basics include:

Don’t exaggerate your qualifications: It may be a job you really want, but don’t quite meet all the requirements.

Even though tempting, never exaggerate your skills, especially for careers in the healthcare industry.

A hiring manager must be able to trust that what they see on that resume is the truth.

When listing your education, be sure to include: • Full certification and license names • The name of the certifying body from which you received the education • A certification number if available • List expiration dates anywhere you can One page doesn’t fit all: Since resumes became the main document needed to apply for a job, most experts recommend you keep it short and simple and cut it down to only one page. In the healthcare industry that isn’t always the case.

As long as all the information is relevant to the job, don’t be afraid to go beyond the one page. It’s OK to have two to three-page resumes if they highlight your skills, objectives,

Proofread: When it’s your own writing and your own work, proofreading might be tough. A sentence you’ve read five times, retyped and reconsidered might look correct because you are on auto-read. Don’t be afraid to have someone else read it over, and for yourself, take a break before proofreading so you are looking at it with fresh eyes.

Facts matter: Make sure you have the names of institutions, universities and education programs correct.

Take the extra minute to look them up online and assure you’ve stated all names correctly.

Include a cover letter: Like the resume, your cover letter shouldn’t just be a template. Your cover letter should be specific to the job you are applying for. Don’t be afraid to change the cover letter with every new application.

Calm after storm in Centennial

he word “bombogenesis” may easily fade from memory in western Centennial, where the harrowing effects of the winter storm across the Front Range were hard to spot the next day.

Several school districts across the Denver metro area — including the Littleton and Cherry Creek districts — stayed closed a second day March 14, after blizzard conditions brought low visibility and high winds blowing snow sideways the day before.

But aside from some emergency vehicles still out and about, the mostly clear major roads and parking lots told little of the city-halting storm the day before.

Jesse Loar, 38, brought his three kids to deKoevend Park on South University Boulevard to go sledding.

“We managed to keep power and internet” yesterday, Loar said. “We have a lot of friends who didn’t.”

Dwayne Fontenette, 53, shoveled snow off his sidewalk near South Colorado Boulevard in the morning. He worked from home and was able to avoid the storm outside the previous day.

Alongside him, an excited Xavier Saddler, 10, pointed out it was a “snow day — two days!”

South Metro Fire Rescue personnel gathered for the grand-opening ceremony at the new Station 32 building.

Local officials, including Centennial City Councilmember Candace Moon, came to the March 2 ceremony at 5945 S. Quebec St. in Centennial. The old Station 32 building closed for demolition in 2017 after four decades. A wall mural was preserved from the original station and reinstalled, according to a news release by South Metro.

Station 32 is home to seven firefight-

ers per shift who work there for 48 hours at a time. The station includes a fitness area, training room, day room, kitchen, dining area, offices, quiet study spaces, equipment storage and a large emergency vehicle garage with four apparatus bays, the release said.

South Metro’s district includes Bow Mar, Castle Pines, Centennial, Cherry Hills Village, Columbine Valley, Foxfield, Greenwood Village, Lone Tree, Littleton, Louviers and Parker, as well as Highlands Ranch and other unincorporated portions of Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson counties.

Two years in a row of students dying by suicide haven’t been easily forgotten at Arapahoe High School.

This April, students are taking action to put mental health at the forefront of the community’s collective mind: Arapahoe students got involved with a national organization to put on a suicide-prevention walk on campus.

“Mental health is important and deserving of a conversation,” wrote Brooke Smiley, a senior at Arapahoe, on Nextdoor.

“Suicide affects so many people worldwide, and this could be a step to improving the lives of those who struggle with mental health.”

Smiley and her friend, Ryan Renshaw, coordinated with

Arapahoe and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to host the walk from 1 to 4 p.m. April 14 at Arapahoe High, 2201 E. Dry Creek Road.

Two Arapahoe students died by suicide within just days of each other at the end of September and beginning of October.

In August 2017, a Powell Middle School student died of an apparent suicide that occurred on Mark Twain Elementary school grounds, one day after another Arapahoe student died by suicide.

Though recent years have seen a surge of focus by schools on mental health, youth suicide rates continue to climb, Christine Harms, the director of the School Safety Resource Center, has said. The center is part of the state Department of Public Safety.

“Nobody’s quite sure why,” Harms has said. “But school districts are definitely aware.

Community members who would like an in-depth look at what happens from the time someone is arrested until trial and conviction are encouraged to participate in the 2019 spring citizens academy of the 18th Judicial District.

The free seven-week academy meets from 6 to 9 p.m.

Wednesdays from May 8 to June 19 in the Douglas County office, 4000 Justice Way, Castle Rock.

Each of the seven classes explores the role of various members of the office. Attendees will explore different functions of the specialized units in the district attorney’s office, including the Special Victims, Economic Crimes, Cold Case, Crime

Scene Investigations, County Court and Juvenile Justice.

Space is limited, and preference is given to applicants who live in the 18th Judicial District and are first-time attendees. Participants must be at least 18 years old and must complete an application and pass a criminal background check to be considered for attendance.

Members of the media are welcome to apply.

LPS will begin tearing down Ames in sections beginning this summer, but will work around TLC’s kitchen as long as possible, said Diane Doney, the school district’s assistant superintendent.

“At one point we thought we could build the new building off to the side while the old one was still standing,” Doney said.

“But the architect said the best spot on the property is right where the current building is. It’s a small site. It’s a shame.”

Doney said the relationship between the district and TLC has been very positive.

“We love them,” Doney said. “We liked them there. We tried our best to figure out something.”

TLC bears no hard feelings toward LPS, Kreider said.

“We’ve had a wonderful relationship with them,” Kreidler said. “They gave us a great deal. They provided maintenance and security.

It rarely appears in text, because we rarely write with fillers.

You might say “uh,” but you don’t write “uh.” Or if you do, it’s uncommon.

I had a college professor who said “uh” every third word. I started keeping track. One day he was up to 88, and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I did something regrettable.

I left a note in his mailbox about it.

How he diminished his “wonderful lectures” (I had to add a little softener) with hems and haws.

Hey, I’m not perfect. I could be called to task by a strict grammarian all day and all night.

There’s a linguist named John McWhorter who astonishes me with his grasp of words, etymologies and meanings. He is an associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University.

McWhorter wrote a lengthy piece for The Atlantic (Nov. 25, 2016), titled “The Evolution of `Like.’ How the ubiquitous, often-reviled word associated with young people and slackers represents the ever-changing English language.”

I’ll make reference to it shortly.

The first time I saw — and heard — McWhorter, he was being interviewed

by Don Lemon after the Jussie Smollett incident.

McWhorter spoke without a script but sounded as if he were reading from

My perspective on this issue is personal. Our family was in constant fear of losing our eldest daughter to suicide nearly a decade ago. She was just a child of 17 years at the time. Today, she’s healthy and successful.

Our family took action and removed all the firearms in our home. However, today Colorado’s families, especially those who have adult family members

living on their own, don’t have such capabilities to take preventive measures.

I challenge the members of this committee, especially my fellow Republicans, to find common ground and work together in a bipartisan manner to support a thoughtful, comprehensive bill that balances Second Amendment protections with desperate families coping with a loved one in the midst of a crisis.

Each member of this committee has an opportunity to make a real difference and reduce suicide in their community, help and protect law enforcement, and, most importantly, give hope to desperate families. Please act!

Relationships around money are important to examine

hen many people hear the term “financial adviser,” they may think of someone who mostly manages investments. While that may have been true in the past, today you may desire a holistic adviser who focuses on your life goals and relationships. Your adviser could help strengthen your marriage and help you set good examples for your kids.

One important area of focus is the impact of personal relationships on your financial future. Surprisingly, few couples discuss their long-term financial goals and short-term approaches to money management before they get married, in my experience.

This can lead to significant challenges down the road as couples with different objectives and spending habits struggle to find common ground. This may be more true as many couples are waiting longer to get married and financial patterns are already well-ingrained.

In the paper “Examining the Relationship Between Financial Issues and Divorce,” researchers found that couples who argue or disagree about finances are 69 percent more likely to get a divorce than couples who don’t. ¹ Talking about money is important, as financial disagreements can have a major impact on relationships. • Be fair: The way money is handled within a household should be fair and equitable. It is likely that one person will earn more than the other. However, to foster equality, it is important that money is viewed as belonging equally to each spouse or partner.

• Agree on setting limits: You may also consider setting a limit in how much one person can spend on nonessential items without having to talk to the other person. Discuss what this limit should be and make sure it is the same for each person. Whether it is $100 or $1,000, find an amount that makes sense. By setting these limits, each spouse has a certain degree of flexibility, while still seeking consen-

And while I’m at it: Does “literally” mean “literally” or “figuratively”?

I needed to be transparent and honest with myself and others about what I can and cannot do, what I am willing to do and not do, and where my boundaries were. I need to hold myself accountable for what I am doing and trying to achieve and included my accountability partners to help hold me accountable to my commitments. And I personally needed to stay committed to the journey. Again, this one is on me, and if you are following along and this is where you are as well, the commitment is on you too.

Lastly, I need to take action. Not just

write about them or talk about them but do what I say I will do, when I say I will do them.

What I am trying to do is what my good friend Tom Ziglar encourages us to do in his new book “Choose to Win.” It is to move from success to significance, and significance to legacy.

‘Our Town’ takes rare turn in the round

Tips and tricks for starting gardens in spring, early summer

H

umanity has always had a connection with the earth, said John Stolzle, a Colorado State University Extension agent in Jefferson County who specializes in horticulture, plant pathology and food systems.

“Gardening is a direct way for people to interact with nature’s processes,” Stolzle said.

However, with the state’s diverse — and often unpredictable — weather, Colorado can present greater challenges to gardeners than many other U.S. states.

Luckily, Stolzle said, “there are a few tips and tricks that can help when starting up spring and summer gardens.”

It all depends on the last frost Planting in Colorado is highly weather dependent and each year is different, Stolzle said.

But one tip to remember is not to start too early, Stolzle said.

“The key, in my opinion, is to be patient,” he said. “And to plant according to the last predicted frost date.”

Because the latter varies regionally, paying close attention to local weather forecasts may be the best bet. In general, gardeners can bestguess that the last frost date will likely be sometime late April or early May, Stolzle said.

PlantTalk Colorado, a resource for Coloradans to find research-based gardening information specific to Colorado’s diverse climate, suggests that “people in the Denver metropolitan area normally use Mother’s Day as a guide for when to plant.”

This year, Mother’s Day falls on May 12.

General recommendations on when to start plants indoors range from two to eight weeks before transplantation, Stolzle said. But to get a more exact time frame for each plant, he said, seed packets will usually include the specific recommendations for that plant.

Acclimating plants to the outdoors before planting them outside can also help, Stolzle said.

But, to “avoid shocking their systems, plants should be introduced to the outdoors slowly, over time,” Stolzle said.

Grandma’s tip to avoid a freeze The location of a plant, the duration of a cold spell and temperature can all play a part in a plant freezing, Stolzle said.

Colorado State University Extension’s Colorado Master Gardeners are volunteers trained in horticulture. Master Gardeners have a plethora of troubleshooting information and advice for new and experienced gardeners, available all year round.

Even if you’re not a theater fan, you’ve probably come across it in some form or another.

Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” is perhaps the quintessential example of this.

First produced in 1938, the three-act play explores small-town Americana, nostalgia and the struggles that accompany everyday life. In other words, it’s about all of us.

Directed by Len Matheo, “Our Town” takes audiences to the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, between 1901 and 1913. The Stage Manager serves as the narrator and chronicler of the town’s happenings, which include the big events — birth, love, death and everything in between.

While Wilder’s words remain very much intact in Miners’ production, the company is playing with the visuals a bit by having the actors wear contemporary clothing, and the show will be presented in the round — a rarity at the theater.

The show includes some heavy moments (just like life) but there are plenty of humorous moments and wise lines to make the darkness a little more bearable.

“Wilder did an unbelievable job of capturing the essence of what it means to be alive,” Hunt said. “I think people will connect with it and since it’s being produced in Golden, they might recognize some of their own small town on the stage.”

Speakers share thoughts on optimism for contest Optimist Club of Littleton holds competition for local young people

“Is there a fine line between optimism and reality?”

Nine young speakers from the south metro area competed with their carefully expressed opinions on that topic in the first round of Optimist Club of Littleton’s annual oratorical contest, held on March 6 at Bemis Library in Littleton.

Three speakers won scholarship checks and the top two contestants will go on to the district competition, then hopefully regional competition with the prospect of additional scholarship money, said Darrell Schulte, the club’s

organizer for the event since 1985.

(World competition is the ultimate goal, with a prize of $15,000 for the top speaker.)

State winners advance to world level competition, with the potential, eventually, of accumulating $23,000 if one wins first place throughout — a substantial dent in college expenses.

Of this group of nine, five winners would be named. The top three won checks: $500, $250 and $125 from the club, which especially supports local youths. The top five won handsome gold medals, hung around their necks, plus a framed certificate. The two top speakers will advance to the regional competition and compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs.

The Optimist Club of Littleton is celebrating 60 years in the community and would welcome new members, they said. The group meets from 7 to 8 a.m. on Fridays at The Boardroom, 51

W. Dry Creek Circle, conversing and hearing ideas from guest speakers.

Silent auction will benefit library, museum Event runs through two periods in March

Through March 31 in Littleton, the Bemis Library Friends’ Fourth Silent Auction will lure book fans to try to acquire an assortment of 24 unique books that committee members have plucked out of the numerous donations that have come in through the year.

Books will be displayed in glass cases near the entrance, and the Friends of the Littleton Library and Museum (FOLM) cashier, if present, or the circulation desk, will have a notebook with photos and information about each and a listing of bids placed to date. For the first two weeks, through March 17, the first 12 books will be displayed and the next 12 through March 31.

Four of the more “special” items will be displayed all four weeks.

Ask the cashier to get the book out of the case for you to inspect more closely if interested.

Check back to see if someone has bid over you, said FOLM committee member Sue McNamee.

In Robert Zubrin’s Lakewood office hangs a photo he took in 2009 of a space shuttle taking off to repair the Hubble Space Telescope, a mission he strongly advocated for, despite pushback from former NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe.

Zubrin, an aerospace engineer, sees two versions of the future for humanity. The first is where new worlds are being explored, and even if things can go wrong, there’s an optimistic future of infinite possibilities. The other future is bleak in which the world is crowded and lacks enough resources to go around.

“I want the first version, and Mars is the closest planet that has all the resources needed for life and civilization. If we can go there, that’s the first step in becoming a multi-planet species,” said Zubrin. “They say the Earth is only so big. It isn’t, because it comes with an infinite sky.”

Zubrin co-founded The Mars Society in 1998, a Lakewood based organization that is dedicated to human exploration and settlement on Mars.

Shannon Rupert, an ecologist and the director of the Mars Society’s Utah site, said she used to tell people we would be on Mars in 2013. Zubrin said the biggest obstacle to getting to Mars has been “the decay of the political system.”

“It’s a matter of having the desire to go, that driving force to get there.

Twenty years ago, we were considered nutty, fringe scientists,” said Rupert.

“Now we’re right in the mainstream. I think we will go to Mars.”

There’s political support for the Mars project. In 2017 President Donald Trump signed a NASA funding bill that included plans for a 2030’s manned mission to Mars.

U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, who sits on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee and the Subcommittee on Space, noted that in 2033, Earth and Mars will be close enough to erase months of typical travel time to reach Mars.

Perlmutter said NASA’s long-term exploration goals include human exploration of Mars, and the plans from this Administration to go back to the Moon depend on developing and testing the technologies needed for a mission to Mars. As part of the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017, there is a required report from NASA on the technical and cost requirements for a human mission to Mars in 2033. The report is still in the works.

Zubrin envisions a frontier environment when it comes to living on Mars initially. He says in certain ways, life won’t be as appealing as life on Earth. People will live in enclosed habitats and not have all the same comforts of home as there are on Earth.

Airport noise-abatement efforts recognized nationally STAFF REPORT

Two top officials at Centennial Airport received the UC Davis Aviation Noise and Emissions Symposium’s Walt Gillfillan Award.

Dylan Heberlein, the airport’s senior planner and noise specialist; and Mike Fronapfel, director of planning and development, were given the award, which honors symposium founder Walt Gillfillan and recognizes exemplary achievements and contributions to noise abatement in aviation by an individual or organization, according to a news release.

“This award has been a long time in the making,” Heberlein said in the release. “We just happen to be here to receive the award, but there’s more than 25 years of effort that’s gone into making Centennial Airport’s noise-abatement program what it is, today.”

Heberlein and Fronapfel oversee one of the most proactive noise programs in the nation, managing as many as 13,000 noise complaints in a single year,

Formed in 2009, the Centennial Airport Community

Noise Roundtable — which Walt Gillfillan had a hand in — was created as a collaborative forum for local elected officials, appointed community representatives, airport staff, the FAA, the Colorado Division of Aeronautics and airport users to find ways to reduce and mitigate the impact of aircraft noise on surrounding communities.

Centennial Airport’s Fly Quiet Program, created in partnership with the roundtable, is an example of how the airport and communities work together. The voluntary noise abatement program has helped minimize the impact of aircraft noise through pilot education and awareness.

The award was presented March 4 in Jacksonville, Florida.

“We are honored to have been nominated and selected, but this award is not just about us. It’s about the synergy among all of our stakeholders,” Fronapfel said. “And that’s something we’re truly happy to make some noise about.”

Vista, Legend take game to Arizona diamonds

Diver, swimmer land college scholarships for prowess in pools

Franny Cable and Lindsay Stenstrom have a lot in common.

Both are heading to major universities next fall on swimming and diving scholarships and both are focused on their sports.

And both were honored by Colorado Community Media.

Cable, a senior at Arapahoe High School, is the 2018-19 South Metro Girls Diver of the Year. Stenstrom, a senior at Valor Christian High School, is the 2018-19 South Metro Girls Swimmer of the Year.

Cable won her second consecutive 5A diving title in February with a Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center pool record of 562.10 points. She also repeated as the Continental League diving champion.

“It was a hard year at the beginning but I definitely picked it up more and more as I got closer to state,” said Cable, who will continue her diving career at the University of Kansas. “It was my senior year and I was going to do the best that I could.”

Arapahoe diving coach Jeff Smith marvels at Cable’s talent and tenacity.

“Her laser-like focus is unmatched,” said Smith. “She gets up, smiles at the judges like it’s a game, then goes into the zone like none other. Since her second-place finish at state her sophomore year, she has lost only once. That happened this year at the Coaches Invitational. I saw it in her eyes — that was never going to happen again.

“She has grown as a person in our time together. At practice when she is not on the boards, she is always playing around. Her playfulness during practice is contagious. It makes everyone loosen up, have fun and come back.”

Stenstrom, whose mother Lori was a swimmer at Stanford and whose sister Brooke is a member of the current Stanford Cardinals team, has signed to swim at UCLA. She won the 5A Jeffco individual championships in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. She was fourth at the 5A state meet in the 50 freestyle and the runner-up in the 100 freestyle.

“Obviously I wanted to place high but I just gave it my best,” said Stenstrom.

Valor coach Melody Peotter expects to hear more about Stenstrom’s successes in the future.

“Transitioning from 4A to 5A was a challenge for our team, but Lindsay rose to the challenge and finished her high school career well,” said Peotter.

“Lindsay is a strong competitor and committed athlete. She excels at everything she puts her mind to both in and out of the pool. I believe she will thrive next year swimming at UCLA.”

ow that the winter sports season is over and driveway is finally clear of snow, it is time to catch up on a few other things.

First off, the Mountain Vista and Legend baseball teams displayed good timing. There were no baseball, soccer or lacrosse games played OVERTIME in Colorado on March 13 or 14 because of snow.

Golf or track events were also postponed.

However Vista and Legend did play baseball because they were in the Jim Benton Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona in the Phoenix area. The Douglas County School District didn’t go on spring break until the week of March 18-22 but Vista and Legend players didn’t miss too much school because of two snow days.

Coming and going Darren Withey is the new athletic director at Highlands Ranch and Valor Christian AD Jamie Heiner has resigned effective at the end of the school year and is changing careers.

Withey, a Spanish teacher in the EDGE program at Legend, will take over for the 2019-20 school year.

He was the former Aurora Central head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Aurora Central, Mountain Vista and Legend and assistant baseball coach at Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon and Legend. He was an assistant softball coach at Legend.

Withey’s mother was a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and his dad, Jim, was a semi-professional baseball player in Harvey, Illinois.

Heiner, Valor’s AD for the past four years, will be pursuing a full-time pastoral role at Journey Church in Castle Pines.

Valor has the search for a new AD. Impressive debut Clint Evans has made an impressive coaching debut in Colorado.

Lending a hand deserves applause Hockey player who is big on assists honored for hard work on ice

It was late in the third period of the state semifinal game against eventual state champion Regis Jesuit when Alex Harlan set up Chaparral’s best scoring chance of the contest.

The Chaparral senior sent a pass to a teammate in the slot, which didn’t result in a goal in the 4-0 loss on March 1, but it showed the kind of player Harlan is — when assists to him are as important as the resulting goals.

Harlan is the 2019 Colorado Community Media South Metro Hockey Player of the Year.

He was one of the state leaders with 23 assists. He had 14 goals and tied with fellow senior Dylan Florit for the team lead with 37 points for the Wolverines. Harlan missed two games because of concussion protocol.

“A lot of times the talk is about the player who scored the goals and not the player who had the assists,” said Harlan. “But the

players know how important assists are.

“Yeah, sometimes I look to pass first. My dad keeps telling me to look for shots. I’m just glad I was able to play well this season.”

Harlan’s brother, Max, was an All-State goalie for Regis last season.

Alex Harlan has gone to Chap for four seasons and chose to play high school this season instead of AAA club hockey with the Thunderbirds. He noted it is more fun to play in front of a high school crowd than just parents at AAA games.

“He has extremely good vision on the ice as attested by his 23 assists,” said Wolverines coach Ryan Finnerock. “His biggest attribute is his speed and skill. He is right that sometimes assists are overlooked more than goals by some. However, we value them on our team as equal to goals.

“Alex did not play of Chaparral last season. He made the decision in his senior year to come back and play for his high school. He chose high school hockey because it has become more competitive than club AAA hockey and he said the level of hockey is equal to or greater in high school compared to AAA.”

“You don’t do this to win championships but I can’t imagine writing a better story,” said Evans. “My family and I moved out here from Kansas City in June. I had hopes of doing something like this in the future but to do it in our first year is just amazing.

“The kids did it. I didn’t come out here not knowing I had these good players. I watched Jana (Van Gytenbeek) play but a lot of these kids didn’t play a whole lot last year. We said it all year, one team, one goal, we’re going to find a way.”
