Faculty positions at the University of Colorado (at that time, the Health Sciences Center on 9th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, now Anschutz Medical Campus) brought us to Colorado.

Career of service I started in health care as a dietary tray-line aide in a large inner-city hospital in Toledo, Ohio. While I was pursuing my degree in nursing, I worked nights and weekends at the information desk there.

I (later) started work as a registered nurse on a unit caring for patients with medical or surgical issues. After 20 months, I transferred to a position as nursing informaticist, where I worked with clinical staff as they adopted order entry and results reporting systems (the start of electronic health records). From there, I pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Florida and, after graduation, accepted a position as nursing research coordinator at Shands Hospital at the

University of Florida. After almost four years in that position, we moved here.

I have amazing opportunities to collaborate with great people across the state and lead innovative projects.

Getting on board (Gov. Jared Polis’ office announced Barton’s appointment to the Colorado Health Service Corps Advisory Council on Feb. 11.) I’ve known about the Health Service Corps Advisory Council since its inception, due to connections with the primary care office at the Colorado Department of Health and Environment.

The council oversees the administration of the Colorado Health Service Corps, which provides loan repayment to health care providers who choose to work in designated shortage areas across the state, especially in rural counties.

The ultimate goal of the council is to allocate resources to candidates who have a passion for working in shortage areas and plan to stay in those communities. My role is to collaborate with council members, using data to make the best decisions possible for the health of Coloradoans.

Picturesque life I love to hike and take advantage of the Colorado outdoors. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, and we’ll be celebrating our 35th anniversary this year.

Schools, parents share burden of student mental health, officials say Broadening definitions of success could help kids, superintendent says

Littleton Public Schools officials say the district is putting serious effort into addressing students’ mental health challenges, but they can’t do it alone.

“We’re investing in the safety and mental health of our children, and inviting people to help us,” said school board member Robert Reichardt at a town hall-style community forum on Feb. 26. “We’re facing a crisis around adolescent mental health that’s nationwide. If we knew the answer, we’d do it. We’re on this journey of trying to figure out how to respond to these big challenges.”

The meeting was the final of four held in January and February to discuss climate and culture in the district, spurred by a largely anonymous coalition, said to consist of parents, teachers and students, that alleged a toxic culture at Arapahoe High School and lackluster district response last spring.

The district is undertaking a wide array of efforts toward studying and addressing student mental health, school board members said, including an ongoing study by Dr. Anna Mueller of Indiana University into youth suicide at LPS. Board members also touted efforts to break down information silos around student behavioral health incidents, and a program that helps parents find and even pay for mental health care providers.

Several parents at the meeting praised the district’s efforts.

“The team at LPS has been dedicated to communicating with us and with my kids,” said Chelsea Marx, who said her sixth-grader is on the autism spectrum and her third-grader has been diagnosed with ADHD. “I hear stories from parents in other districts, and I realize we’re really fortunate,” Marx said.

Still, some parents said the district could do more. In anonymous messages written by parents during the meeting, some said they found teachers and counselors overburdened, overwhelmed or inadequately trained to address their children’s needs.

Asked whose voices aren’t heard often enough in the district, parent Kris Carafelli said: her own.

“I want to say that there’s a lot of trauma in this community,” said Carafelli, who said she happened to be across the street from Arapahoe High School in 2013 the day student Claire Davis was murdered by another student.

“When I send my kids to school, I tell them I love them, and I hope I see them again,” said Carafelli, adding she vividly recalls the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. “I feel the district is doing good, innovative work, but there’s a lot of pain and fear out there.”

Carafelli said her fellow parents sometimes also shut out her voice.

“There’s such pressure to be the perfect mom,” she said. “I feel like parents have to pretend there’s nothing wrong in their lives. I don’t fit in.”

Arapahoe High School was a common topic at the meeting, with parents asking about the school board’s response to scandals that have rocked the community, including Davis’ murder, two teachers who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing students and a number of student suicides that eclipses the district’s other two traditional high schools.

School board President Jack Reutzel said the district did all it could to vet Ian Ahern and Sarah Porter, the two teachers who abused students.

“All we can do is rely on what someone’s reported before,” Reutzel said.

“The idea that we’re prescient enough to looking into someone and see that in them, that’s too high of a standard.”

Superintendent Brian Ewert said he commissioned an internal investigation into Porter and Ahern’s vetting and found no red flags.

As far as Arapahoe’s higher level of troubling incidents, Reichardt, the school board member, said Arapahoe really is different.

“It’s an achievement-oriented place,” Reichardt said. “That’s reflected in parents, alumni and teachers. That’s not great for all kids. There are children at Arapahoe where it’s not the right place for them to be. But I don’t think the administration or the board are the right people to go to individual parents and say this is not the best fit for your kid.”

Ewert said Arapahoe administration and the district in general are becoming more open to alternate definitions of achievement.

“There’s no evidence to suggest that a 4.0 GPA — or a 4.5, which some of our kids are striving for — makes any difference later in life,” Ewert said.

“Kids who are well-rounded and try their best, that matters more than a 4.0.”

Reutzel said the schools can’t solve all mental health problems, nor should they be expected to.

“The job of parents is to support the district in educating your children,” Reutzel said. “The job of the school district is to support parents with kids’ mental health.

“We don’t have all the resources we need, but we’re there to help kids. In my opinion, mental health begins at home.”

Man fights for mental health law after son’s suicide Rick Padilla, whose son, Jack, died in 2019, pushes for bill in his name

After Jack Padilla, a freshman at Cherry Creek High School, took his own life in February 2019, his family saw an outpouring of support: A school walkout where some students wore “#Jackstrong” shirts — a slogan for the work by Jack’s friends and family to raise suicide awareness. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock shouted out “Jackstrong” in a message at a local lacrosse game in April.

In October came an effort by state officials, teens, mental health leaders and Padilla’s father, Rick Padilla, to launch public service announcementstyle videos to open up conversations about suicide. The videos racked up a collective thousands of views, and the numbers continue to climb.

Rick Padilla isn’t stopping there.

“We’re going to make a difference.

It’s something that’s really important to me,” said Padilla, who is pushing for bills this year in the state Legislature to tackle youth mental health challenges.

It’s an issue that has seen increasing attention in the Denver metro area over the past year.

Colorado ranked among both the 10 highest youth suicide rates and overall suicide rates in states across the country based on data in recent years, according to the Colorado Office of Suicide Prevention.

Five students in Cherry Creek School District died by suicide in less than six months last calendar year, and multiple students died by suicide in the span of 40 days in Adams 12 Five Star Schools recently, according to a Jan. 24 news release from Adams 12.

Along with experiencing depression, Jack Padilla dealt with bullying at school and on social media, Rick Padilla said. That’s why he’s pushing for a bill to be considered that he calls the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights,” or Jack’s Law, which would make bullying policies consistent among Colorado school districts.

“What we want to do is have some mandatory anti-bullying laws rather than (different) school boards deciding if it’s bullying and how to investigate,” said Rick Padilla, adding that establishing an appeal process would also be part of the goal.

State Rep. Lisa Cutter, a Jefferson County Democrat, has been working with Padilla and other supporters on the potential bill, Padilla said. He’s hoping for the backing of state Sen. Don Coram, a Republican of Montrose, who has indicated he may support the bill, Padilla said.

The idea for the bill came from Padilla and how the aftermath of his son’s death was handled, he said.

Other bills Padilla also supports the following mental health-related measures, among others: • House Bill 20-1005, which would make updates to Colorado’s Safe2Tell program, an anonymous tip line used in school communities to report concerning or threatening behavior.

• Senate Bill 20-001, which would expand behavioral health training for K-12 school district employees. It requires the Colorado Department of Education to offer a “train the trainer” program to prepare employees to teach a youth behavioral and mental health training course. That course could include identifying mental health challenges and substance-use disorders, bullying prevention and intervention strategies, encouraging positive bystander behavior, and how to provide assistance in non-crisis and crisis situations, among others.

• Senate Bill 20-014, which would require school districts’ attendance policies to include excused absences for behavioral health concerns.

• House Bill 20-1028, which would require the School Safety Resource Center in the Colorado Department of Public Safety to study the availability of residential mental health treatment beds for youth. The effort would assess school districts’ needs for treatment for youths who have been identified as having severe behavioral or mental health challenges. The center would prepare a report and “make any legislative recommendations” to address those needs.

Family sues school district over suspension after gun photo Girl’s Snapchat post showing weapons, facial scarf, finger gesture caused fear, district says

A student who posted a Snapchat photo that shows her and a sibling holding semi-automatic firearms has sued the Cherry Creek School District, claiming a five-day suspension violated her First Amendment right to free speech.

“Nothing about the image itself, or its caption, constitutes or promotes illegal activity,” says the complaint in the federal lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.

The school district’s policy allows for suspension due to “behavior on or off school property which is detrimental to the welfare, safety, or morals” of students or school personnel, according to a letter from the Endeavor Academy principal, which is included in the Feb. 14 complaint.

The Cherry Creek district cannot discuss matters of litigation, said Abbe Smith, district spokeswoman.

“What I can tell you is that this case involved multiple social media posts that concerned the school community

A student identified as “C.G.,” who attended Cherry Creek High School at the time, had posted a Snapchat photo of his friends at a local thrift store trying on hats and wigs. One wore an oversized hat with

an American flag pattern, another wore a blond wig and a third wore what resembled a foreign military hat from the World War II period, according to the complaint in the case.

C.G. captioned the photo, “Me and the boys bout to exterminate the Jews.”

The school suspended and later expelled the student for that September social media post based on district policies that his father’s attorneys allege are

The legal action seeks, in part, for the court to declare Cherry Creek’s policies as unconstitutional and to wipe the suspension from the student’s record.

‘Engaged in protected speech’ The student — a 17-year-old senior at Endeavor Academy, an alternative high

The lawsuit’s complaint seeks, in part, to readmit the student to Cherry Creek High or another district high school and prevent the district from enforcing “unconstitutionally vague and overbroad policies” — one of the same arguments used in the federal lawsuit against the school district regarding the photo that shows firearms.

A.K. posted a photo of herself the morning of Oct. 10 on Snapchat, a social media application, wearing a black scarf wrapped around her head, according to the complaint.

The photo did not bear a caption, but several of the student’s volleyball teammates messaged her to say they thought the photo was racist. A.K. removed the photo, the complaint says.

She then reposted the photo with the caption: “Allahu akbar (I live in America so [expletive] you if your offended, I can do what I want),” according to the complaint. The phrase at the beginning is commonly used by Muslims in prayer but also has become associ-

ated with terrorist attacks.

After receiving more complaints from teammates and threats that they would report her, the student “selfreported” what she posted on Snapchat to the principal’s office to make the school administration aware, the complaint says.

Principal Caroll Duran did not express concern regarding the post at that time. The student was called back into the office later that day after Duran heard about the post from other individuals, according to the complaint.

At that point, Duran advised the student to be “more sensitive” about her social media use but told her she couldn’t be punished for it, the complaint says.

That night, the student and her older brother planned to go to a shooting range at the Centennial Gun Club.

“Plaintiff and her family are firearm enthusiasts, strong supporters of the First and Second Amendments, and encourage family members to regularly practice to maintain firearm proficiency,” the complaint says.

The family’s attorneys are listed as part of the Firearms Policy Coalition in California, a nonprofit that advocates for liberties and constitutional rights, the complaint says.

Before going to the shooting range, the student posted the photo that the principal said spurred her suspension.

Scholar portrays Rosa Parks during her historic civil rights activism

“In that day, there were 40,000 Negroes in Montgomery, Alabama,” but barely any were registered to vote, said Becky Stone, a National Endowment for the Humanities and Chautauqua scholar, portraying the civil rights activist.

She took the audience back to 1955, where decades of segregation in the South had built up after the Civil War and flew in the face of the amendments to the Constitution that followed it, which aimed to establish equality for black Americans.

Parks, a longtime member of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP, joined that organization in 1943, the same year a bus driver had Parks removed — 12 years before the more famous incident where she would refuse to give up her seat.

And, as fate would have it, that same bus driver had her ejected from the bus in 1955.

Her removal set off a chain of events that saw the historic bus boycott and a ruling by the U.S.

Supreme Court outlawing bus segregation.

Stone immersed the library audience in lesser-known facts, too. The famous photo of Parks looking out of a bus window was a posed picture for the press — on a bus that, yet again, was driven by James Blake, the same bus driver that had her removed. In the photo, she sits in front of a white member of the media.

“I had been standing up to white people all my life, and (that driver) was no different,” Stone said, answering questions in character as Parks after her performance.

Stone, 70, who lives near Asheville, North Carolina, performed in the Feb. 27 event, titled “History Reimagined: The Rosa Parks Story.” She also has portrayed Maya Angelou and Harriet Tubman and has done portrayals since 2003, she said.

Stone’s performances are usually attended by largely white, older and well-educated audiences, she said. Stone enjoys the chance to highlight black history and help bridge racial gaps.

“I treasure the opportunity to bring who we are as a people to people who don’t know us,” Stone said.

Innovation Campus class works on organization’s second project for homeless people

T

he ever-present issue of homelessness in the Denver metro area met a novel small-scale solution in 2017, when the City of Denver’s first legal community of tiny homes opened along 38th Street, giving a small number of people a lift in their struggle to exit homelessness.

Now, the second tiny home community by the same organization is in the works — and the builders are high school students.

One is Matthew Danfelser, a Cherry Creek High School senior who attends a class at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus. Danfelser lives in Centennial, where he says he doesn’t see homelessness as much as in Denver.

“It’s sad to see, but I really like this idea of getting them back on their feet,” Danfelser said during a class session.

At the Innovation Campus, where high school students in the Cherry Creek district come to learn skills in several trades — from construction management to cybersecurity — students are building tiny homes as part of a partnership with the Colorado Village Collaborative.

That’s the organization that launched Denver’s first legal tiny home community, called Beloved Community Village, which later moved to the city’s Globeville neighborhood.

The upcoming village will be the second-ever legal tiny home village for people experiencing homelessness in the Denver metro area, according to Cole Chandler, director of the Colorado Village Collaborative. It’s also likely the second in the entire state, to Chandler’s knowledge.

The organization sees its partnership with the Innovation Campus as a way to combine students’ practical learning with gaining understanding of the lo-

“We are hopeful that by introducing this topic to students early on in their careers, we affect the way that they think about homelessness throughout their lives as citizens,” Chandler added.

The students at Innovation Campus will build six units for a village that will allow women transitioning out of homelessness to live in them for up to a year, said Jim Dosky, an infrastructure engineering teacher who works with the class.

The students were working on

the base of a home in mid-February, and they’ll have the homes finished in April. Ideally, the homes will be delivered in early May, Dosky said.

Colorado Village Collaborative aims to open the village by the end of 2020, according to its website.

The village will sit at a location that isn’t publicly known yet, said Mike Degitis, a math teacher at Innovation Campus who helped put together the class’ partnership with the Colorado Village Collaborative. But it will be in the City of Denver, Chandler said.

Under federal law, the chronically homeless are defined as people with disabilities who experience extended or repeated episodes of homelessness. They often cycle in and out of hospitals, detox programs, jails and psychiatric institutions — all at high cost to the public.

Some studies have found that a person experiencing chronic homelessness can cost taxpayers as much as $30,000 or more per year, according to the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, a partnership of federal agencies.

Getting homeless people into tiny homes and connecting them to other services while housed could be much cheaper, Degitis said.

The Innovation Campus opened at the start of this school year.

‘Additional consequences’ That same day, Endeavor Academy emailed A.K.’s mother a letter from Duran that cited school district policy JKD-1-E and the district’s conduct and discipline code, as well as a corresponding state law, Colorado Revised Statutes 22-33-106 (1).

That law states that behavior on or off school property that is detrimental to students’ welfare or safety can be grounds for suspension or expulsion at a public school.

The Arapahoe Philharmonic’s March 27 concert will premiere an original composition by award-winning composer Jack Frerer, written in response to gun violence in Colorado.

Frerer won the orchestra’s Vincent C. LaGuardia Jr. Composition Competition last season and was named composer-in-residence. His arrival in Denver to accept the award in May 2019 coincided with the day of the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting.

Being in a community where this type of trauma was happening was a new experience for him, one that impacted him deeply, according to a news release.

He was inspired to focus a new composition on “the landscape of Colorado gun violence through the varying perspectives of students, those who have aged beyond the classroom, and a

5 THINGS TO KNOW: SPARK CENTENNIAL

Program highlights continuation of shopping centers From a “Super Smash Bros.” video game tournament to a barbecue and blues concert, the City of Centennial sponsored events last year to stoke ideas about how to bring people to shopping centers.

With sales tax revenue a top concern for municipalities as online shopping continues to dig into brick-and-mortar businesses, the city’s Spark Centennial program aims to call attention to Centennial’s retailers — and, possibly, to entice businesses to fill vacant spaces.

The program is expected to

continue in 2020. Here are a few things to know about how it works and the effects it has had so far.

Challenges for neighborhood centers The parking lot across from Arapahoe High School in west Centennial is one of a few in the city that have seen large retailers leave vacant buildings behind. There, an Albertsons and Petco closed in recent years, along with a Safeway along East Smoky Hill Road across town. The Streets at SouthGlenn has seen Sears, a main anchor store for the outdoor mall, close as well, and the nearby Macy’s could close in coming years too.

Attracting attention Spark Centennial funds popup, or temporary, events in shopping center lots. Rolling Smoke BBQ at East Dry Creek Road and South University Boulevard — across from Arapahoe High — put on the first Spark Centennial event June 15: a crawfish boil, barbecue and a blues concert.

Since then, the “Super Smash Bros.” tournament took place Aug. 3 at Halfpenny Brewing Company a few minutes east, and the city put $2,000 toward The Streets at SouthGlenn’s 10th anniversary celebration, which featured a bounce house, climbing wall, face-painting, balloon artistry and a caricaturist.

VOICES A handful of clues before we choose

T

his is it, I promise. My one and only political column.

Nationally, roughly 43% of eligible voters QUIET did not vote in the 2016 presidential DESPERATION election.

Let’s try to do better.

That’s all I am going to say. You’re not going to get an endorsement out of me, but if you can read between the lines, I think you’ll Craig Marshall know.

I have never seen Smith anything like 2016-20.

If nothing else, it has been entertaining.

However, there has been a whole lot

of else. Daily. Hourly.

The past three and a half years have been exhausting and exasperating.

There’s no other way for me to look at it.

It’s been what’s called an “eye opener.” I simply didn’t realize as many of my neighbors believe in what they believe in.

Maybe that’s the silver lining.

The United States are not united states.

I often wonder if the exhaustion and exasperation have wicked into our conscious and unconscious behavior.

There seems to be more disrespect and belligerence.

I would prefer to be either informative or amusing and leave the deep dish editorials to others.

Will Rogers said, “I am not a member of any organized political party.

I’m a Democrat.”

Does anyone remember Rogers?

He was born to a Cherokee family in 1879 and died in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935. In between, he was a humorist, actor, cowboy, social commentator and newspaper columnist.

“Folksy” always appears next to his name.

He once said he never met a man he didn’t like.

Boy, I sure have. Including myself.

Each and every one of us is imperfect. Except my sister. No, I take that back. She bites her fork.

Some people are more imperfect than others.

I could name names all day, but why be that unpleasant?

It’s so easy to be unpleasant, and I admit my own voice participates.

If I had only one choice, I’d choose

“humorist.”

I can’t change, improve, or enthrall anyone, and I don’t want to try.

I wish I had kept track of the films I have watched since November 2016.

Have there been more comedies than tragedies?

How about music? My preference was wordless classical music before the 2016 election and it has remained wordless classical music.

When I hear Beethoven it improves my day. It’s so good, it makes up for the headlines, at least for 10 or 15 minutes.

There’s something else that improves my day: writing. It’s my banjo.

One of Steve Martin’s routines had him playing the banjo. Playing the banjo whisked away whatever troubles he was having.

I delivered a petition with 70 of my teaching colleagues names, demanding immediate action around the state’s investment in education and teacher pay.

While U.S. News and World Report ranks Colorado first economically and 11th in education, we rank 31st in average teacher salary, 47th in education funding and 51st for teacher wage competitiveness.

o, occasionally, my selling roots do show up in some of my writing. And, although you may not be in sales yourself, two things may happen by continuing to read on. First, you may know someone in sales, and they could find this column interesting. Second, even though it looks like WINNING a column about the WORDS selling profession, it’s really about much more.

Over the years I have heard two sides of an argument. There is one school of thought that believes there are certain people who are born with Michael Norton the gifts, personality, attitude and skills to be recognized as a born salesperson. The other side of that argument is that there is no such thing as a born salesperson, salespeople are made, not born. They will argue that even though they may have been blessed with the gifts, personality and attitude, there is no way they were born with the skills.

Do you know any born salespeople?

I mean the kind of person that without any guidance or direction just somehow ended up in sales. And not only did they end up in sales, they were somewhat successful and sometimes even wildly successful. I know that I can personally name a few men and women whom I know and whom I have worked with who may have me thinking that they actually were a born salesperson.

Now having spent most of my professional life in personal and professional development, and having met thousands of salespeople over the years, I may be qualified to choose a side in this debate. And where I would land would be that I do believe there are born salespeople. Just like I believe there are born athletes, born musicians, and born chefs, I also believe there are born salespeople.

But just like an athlete, musician, or chef who was born with certain gifts, personalities, and attitudes, somewhere along the way they were taught and perfected skills and techniques. Somewhere along the way they received coaching and training to elevate them to a new level of achievement.

When we look at the difference between being born with certain physical qualities and positive attitudes that help us get to where we want to go in life, there is also this other quality called desire and another trait called work ethic. And when we can marry our desire and work ethic with the qualities and attributes we were born with, while working on ourselves and our craft, we can become great at anything.

Maybe the argument shouldn’t be about whether or not we were born to be a certain kind of person, maybe the argument should be that we were all born with gifts, personalities, attitudes, and the ability to build upon each one through some great coaching, training, and practice.

I reminisce more than ever these days. Partly because of my age and partly because of the past three and a half years.

I lived alone throughout college in little apartments, generally with

Movie theaters step up comfort, amenities for enhanced experience

T

raditional moviegoing is struggling, and it’s not hard to see why. Cheap Netflix subscriptions. High (and higher) definition TVs. The ability to stream endless hours of entertainment with the push of a smartphone button.

It’s that seemingly endless entertainment bounty that makes the decline of the simpleton cinema inevitable, right? Perhaps, but don’t tell that to the executives at the nation’s two largest movie theater chains, Regal Cinemas and AMC Theaters. They’ve both spent millions on lavish renovations and improvements to their theaters across the Denver area and show no signs of stopping.

From Westminster to Highlands Ranch and Arvada to Lone Tree, Denver-area audiences now sip craft beers and nosh on gourmet treats like flatbread pizzas and mac and cheese bites while watching crystal-clear movies from recliner seats that they reserved hours and even days ahead of time.

It’s all part of a new focus on the guest that AMC public relations director Ryan Noonan says has swept both AMC and the theater industry as a whole in the last few years. That’s been especially true in the Denver area, which Noonan said has seen among the most renovations and investment among AMC markets.

“What we saw is that guests really wanted this elevated moviegoing experience and they were no longer satisfied with just showing up and sitting in a seat and rubbing elbows with the person next to them,” Noonan said “They wanted to come sit in recliners, they wanted to enjoy better food, they wanted to have a beer as they watched a movie and they wanted to see it on a really big screen with the latest in projection technology. And as we’ve continued to provide that, we’ve seen more and more success and great guest feedback.”

Improvements can be costly Although each of those improvements represents a major investment on the part of theater operators, few match the costs of adding reclining seats, which not only require individual auditoriums to be closed during installation but also typically reduce their capacity by 50% to 60% once installed.

But while such a change would seem to represent a self-inflicted threat to theater bottom lines, Noonan said AMC has found it to be a net positive because theaters are now finding people are returning to theaters more often even if it means

The unique attraction that such seats offer became evident when the seats were first installed in an entire AMC theater in Seattle, Noonan said, and strong consumer enthusiasm for them has also been evident in the Denver area.

“Almost immediately what we saw (in that first theater in Seattle) were guests coming up to the box office and saying ‘I’d like to sit in a recliner to watch a movie’ and not ‘I’d like to go see this specific movie, what auditorium is it in?’” said Noonan.

have become increasingly standard in Denver and other markets throughout the country, they were anything but when a Texan named Tim League opened a theater called Alamo Drafthouse that combined inseat food and drink service with an old-school Hollywood vibe in Austin, Texas in 1997.

Alamo Drafthouse is credited by many in the industry with spearheading changing consumer tastes and the evolving nature of theaters in the Denver market has followed quickly from the opening of Alamo Drafthouse’s first area theater in Littleton in 2013 (additional locations have since opened in the Sloan’s Lake area and Westminster).

Englewood venue snags major art exhibition Rauschenberg: Reflections and Ruminations now at Museum of Outdoor Arts

Starting with the glass entry doors at Museum of Outdoor Arts, Robert Rauschenberg’s work impacts a visitor — and it continues as one strolls through the large gallery at the Englewood Civic Center, and loops through a reprocessed office space. Then one reverses directions and heads down a fascinating hallway to two more spaces filled with the distinctive American artist’s works. MOA staff, with curator Dan Jacobs, has worked on pulling off this exhibit for a number of years and we are fortunate that it’s finally open through June 13.

Rauschenberg (1925-2008) painted, printed, photographed, drew, sculpted, assembled, experimented — and combined techniques as he wished. It’s especially appropriate that his exuberant work is exhibited during Mo’ Print (Month of Printmaking, March 2020)

Museum Director Cynthia Madden Leitner’s catalog foreword explains a connection: “I met Robert Rauschenberg at his home on Captiva Island in Florida in the early 1980s.” Her parents were friends of this charismatic man … The title of the exhibit: “Reflections and Ruminations,” refers to titles of works and the highly polished surfaces that carry some images. Jacobs may have started with John Madden, the director’s father, who owned several pieces, but the search took him across the country, as well as locating works at DU and CU.

Works on reflective surfaces seem to include the visitor’s reflection as part of the art in prints on aluminum, brass or polished steel, and one realizes the title of the exhibit plays with one’s perceptions …

A photograph to the left as one enters presents a profile of a goodlooking man staring off into the distance — no doubt mentally picturing wild bursts of color and big strokes of brush or other implement. The outline of Rauschenberg’s hand also brings one in closer to an extraordinary man.

There are repeats of images such as skyscrapers and tires and cabbages … these images continue to his last series: “Lotus,” continuing into 2008, the year he died. He took photos himself — and used other images freely, including some historic ones.

Works include paintings, lithographs and “Combines,” one of which, “Autobiography,” includes an image of the artist with a parachute flying behind him as he skates forward …

Alzheimer’s, caregiver conference set in Denver STAFF REPORT

People with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers will learn about brain health and how to provide care to those with dementia at a free educational conference presented by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

The foundation’s 2020 national Educating America Tour presents the conference from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at the University of Denver, Craig Hall, 1745 S. High St. Participants can meet with Alzheimer’s experts, ask questions, network, and obtain a free memory screening.

“More than 73,000 Coloradans are living with Alzheimer’s disease; many others are caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s. As those numbers grow, it’s critically important to connect people with information that can help them if Alzheimer’s enters their lives,” Charles J. “Reflections and Ruminations” offers more than 50 original works by a man who was very influential in his own world and well beyond. The visitor can try to follow thought processes, changes in the use of repeated images and a variety of techniques.

A work unto itself is “Barney Google Glut,” 1987, assembled metal collage. Is it a sort of rhino? An entirely imaginary beast? Or should we settle for an abstracted sculptural image? (I really wanted to stroke its back.)

Serrano and Stager were students at Cherokee Trail, and Gallegos was a Grandview High School student who had recently transferred from Cherokee Trail. Mitchell was identified in photos provided by a Cherokee Trail school resource officer.

The four suspects all were initially charged with first-degree felony murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and two “sentence enhancers” related to violent crime with a weapon and causing death, which apply if the case ends in a guilty plea or verdict, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

According to an affidavit, here’s how the incident unfolded: Chavez had sold vape products in transactions arranged over Snapchat, a social media application. The four suspects intended to steal Chavez’s “juice” in a plan that began a day or two before he was shot, Serrano told an investigator.

The four suspects pulled up to Chavez’s home near East Smoky Hill Road and South Picadilly Street, where he walked up to a window of the car and received cash from Serrano, court documents say. The documents allege that Chevez walked away without giving them the product, Serrano said, and Mitchell got out of the car and questioned Chavez about it.

Chavez threw Mitchell onto the lawn, according to Serrano’s account, and that’s when Chavez was shot.

Vape products were later found on Chavez’s lawn and in his room.

The four suspects sped away and were in shock because they didn’t intend to for Chavez to be shot but, rather, to threaten him with the gun if he didn’t give them the product, according to Serrano’s account.

Serrano eventually said she didn’t actually see the gun in anyone’s hands but described it as a “smaller gun” and saw a laser shining on Chavez around the time he was shot.

Area students earn free ride through caddying Evans Scholars to receive $120,000 over four years to attend University of Colorado at Boulder STAFF REPORT

Thirteen students from Colorado have been awarded the Evans Scholarship, a full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies.

The final selections were made after interviews Jan. 28 at the Cherry Hills Country Club.

Each caddie has a unique story that reflects the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

The students will begin college in

fall 2020 as Evans Scholars at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The Evans Scholarship is estimated at $120,000 over four years.

“Each of these deserving Evans Scholars epitomizes what our program has been about since its creation in 1930,” WGA Chairman Kevin Buggy said in a news release.

“Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is humbling, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams.”

The selection meeting in Colorado was one of more than 20 such meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation will have across the country through the spring. When the 201920 selection meeting process is completed by April, an estimated 285 caddies are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship.

A record 1,010 caddies are enrolled in 18 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than

11,050 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. “These young men and women have shown excellence in the classroom and in their communities, as well as on the golf course,” John Kaczkowski, WGA President and CEO, said in the release. “We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family.”

Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 32,500 golfers across the country, who are members of the Evans Scholars Par Club program. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $14 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA Tour Playoff events in the PGA Tour FedExCup competition, are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Frerer has composed a chamber version of splinter for piano, voice and trumpet that will be performed in schools and as community outreach the week of the concert.

Regal Cinemas, the nation’s second biggest theater chain and the operator of 13 theaters in Colorado, seemed to be following the Alamo model when it opened a Regal Cinebarre, its brand of dine-in theater, in Greenwood Village last year. The Cinebarre took over its space from Greenwood Plaza Stadium 12, an aging theater that had closed in 2018.

“This state-of-the-art theater is a unique destination that provides moviegoers with an enhanced entertainment experience as they watch movies and eat a great meal,” Heather Peters, the public relations director for Regal Cinemas, wrote in an email. “The theater features a complete restaurant menu, traditional movie treats, plus a full bar with handcrafted cocktails and satellite television.”

Even some of Denver’s most classic and longstanding cinema destinations are taking note of the changing landscape and responding accordingly. When damage from a burst pipe forced the historic Esquire Theater in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood to close in late 2018, many assumed it would never reopen.

But when it did so last summer, the theater’s guests were greeted with the addition of new theater seats, carpeting and flooring as well as a new box office and concession stand. The improvements continued this winter with the addition of alcoholic beverag-

Different angle on competition But will such changes allow theaters like the Esquire to stave off the challenge posed by Netflix, DisneyPlus and other in-home entertainment options?

“And so while there will always be challenges, I think AMC and really the industry in general have done a really good job of pivoting to an elevated experience and I think guests have really responded.”

Before the start of the fourth quarter of Arapahoe’s second-round 5A girls state playoff game at ThunderRidge, coach Jerry Knafelc talked with his team — and they listened. ”When we came over at the end of the third, we got together and I told them we will determine our fate in this game,” Knafelc said. ”It will be on our play. We kept battling and got into the flow. We finally got comfortable with what we needed to do.”

Junior Sam Shaw had a 3-point basket and two free throws to help ignite Arapahoe’s fourth-quarter surge. ”Obviously, we wanted basically to play hard in the fourth quarter, play together and play for the seniors because it could have been our last game if we lost” said Shaw. ”So I hit my shots and we hit our free throws and we won. We really turned it on.”

Arapahoe sank 8-of-11 free throws in the final 2:16 of the game to seal the win.

Senior Kali March was the Warriors’ leading scorer with 15 points while Shaw had 11 points, including three 3-point baskets, and also pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomore Sam Crispe seven points and eight rebounds.

ThunderRidge, the No. 13 seed, finished its season with a 17-7 record.

Senior Heidi Haze had nine points to pace the Grizzlies’ offense while senior Lindsay Anhalt added seven points for ThunderRidge, which had eight seniors on the roster. ”We just didn’t play our best game,” said ThunderRidge coach Samantha Gillmore. ”We weren’t playing our normal game. We kind of passed up shots, we passed up things and we weren’t doing what we normally do.

tate playoff action in 4A and 5A high school basketball started last week with the first two rounds, and there is nothing better that watching playoff action in any sport.

The intensity and competition in most games increases, and there is usually a surprise or two along the way to the finals.

In the Class 5A boys bracket, Rangeview was top-seeded and Valor Christian was the No. 1 seed in the girls Class 5A. I figured it would be good to talk with somebody that has been OVERTIME through playoff competition, so I reached out to Dick Katte, the winningest Colorado high school boys coach, with 867 victories in 48 seasons at Denver Christian, where Jim Benton he guided teams to eight state titles.

“I’m always anxious for these three weeks of the season,” said Katte, who watches many games during the season. “I love to watch the play, but in my heart it is the toughest thing that I still miss.

Those kinds of games, working with players and asking them to step up, is really an intangible thing.”

It seems to me that teams have to have a little luck, quality talent plus depth, good preparation, a winning demeanor and a confident mental attitude to succeed.

“I don’t know if I’ve seen enough teams to make any judgment on who should be considered,” said Katte about the boys 5A brackets. “I know that the goods are good. I’ve seen Rangeview. They are good. I’ve seen Grandview and they are good and I think Cherry Creek is very good.”

Here are a few more thoughts from Katte about the state tournament basketball playoffs.

“You know that if you are going to win the whole thing that somewhere along the way you are going to have to beat somebody that maybe you shouldn’t have,” offered Katte.

“When you did it as long as I did it, I think that there were times where we should have won but didn’t win the game that was on the line, but there were also times we did win when there were teams better than us.

Three south metro teams make hockey final four Valor, Chaparral and Regis Jesuit advanced in playoffs STAFF REPORT

Semifinal pairings for the state high school hockey tournament are set.

Top-seeded Valor Christian (18-2-1) will face two-time defending state champion and fifth-seeded Regis Jesuit (13-6-2) in a March 5 semifinal game at 5 p.m., which will be held at the Pepsi Center. Valor went 1-0-1 against Regis during the regular season.

Second-seeded Chaparral (16-2-3) will face third-seeded Fort Collins (173-1) at 7:30 p.m. March 5 in the other semifinal game at the Pepsi Center.

Chaparral downed the Lambkins, 3-2, in a regular-season contest.

In quarterfinal games held on Feb. 29, Valor outshot Pine Creek, 29-12, and got goals from Evan Pahos, Blake Rollison and Colton Carlson in a 3-0 victory. Goalie Trey Hirschfield got the shutout.

William Laws had two goals to lead Regis to a 4-2 quarterfinal win over Denver East. Ralston Valley held a 41-26 advantage in shots on goal over Chaparral but the Wolverines got goals from Noah Youkin, Jackson Mundell and Owen Hardy to post a 3-2 victory. Girls basketball playoffs: How local teams fared STAFF REPORT

Top-seeded Valor Christian, defending state champion Cherry Creek, Regis Jesuit, Grandview, Highlands Ranch, Arapahoe and Cherokee Trail were south metro teams to notch second-round victories in the Class 5A girls state basketball playoffs.

Sweet 16 games were scheduled to be played March 3.

Valor made 59 percent of its field goal attempts in rolling to a 91-30 victory over the Far Northeast Warriors on Feb. 28, when all the second-round games were played.

The Eagles had five players in double digits, led by Mariah Hillard and Raegan Beers with 16 points each.

Cherry Creek, the No. 2 seed, used a double-double from senior Cali Clark, who had 25 points and 14 rebounds to sprint to a 77-55 victory over Horizon.

Regis grabbed a 54-11 halftime lead and went on to pound Liberty, 88-24. Sophomore Lauren Betts scored 15 points to lead Grandview in a 76-28 win over Arvada West.

Payton Muma, Sarah Mitchell and Taylor Ray each finished with 14 points as Highlands Ranch routed Chatfield, 67-18. Arapahoe’s strong fourth quarter pushed the Warriors to a 43-32 win over ThunderRidge.

Dominique Rodriguez scored 16 points in Cherokee Trail’s 62-57 win over Lakewood.

In other second-round games, Rangeview posted a 55-41 conquest of Chaparral and Broomfield edged Mountain Vista, 49-48.

In the first round of the 5A playoffs on Feb. 25, No. 17 Chaparral jumped to a 31-11 halftime advan-

tage and went on to record a 58-27 win over Grand Junction. Senior Jessica Formento and sophomore Avery Bang each scored 16 and had six rebounds to pace the Wolverines.

Arapahoe, seeded 20th, rolled to a 61-30 victory over Douglas County as sophomore Sam Crispe had 14 points and senior Kali March added 13 for the Warriors.

Mountain Vista led 52-23 at halftime, finished with 26 steals to record a 80-45 win over Prairie View.

Senior MacKenzie Gamble tossed in 19 points to lead four double-figure scorers for the Golden Eagles.

Lakewood made 12 3-point field goals in a 70-42 conquest over No.42 Rock Canyon. Doherty outscored No. 44 Legend 22-8 in the third quarter in an otherwise close game as the Spartans eliminated the Titans, 47-29.

Ponderosa and Littleton collected first-round wins in the 4A playoffs.

The Mustangs, seeded 18th, held Conifer scoreless in the second and third quarters in a 71-15 win over the Lobos. Junior Liberty Line made six 3-point field goals and scored 30 points for Pondo.

Littleton, seeded 34th, downed No. 31 Denver West, 58-44, as senior Jasmyn Thompson-Harvey and Ava Youngblood-Yazzi each scored 12 points and senior Brook Wolanin added 11 points for the Lions. Susie Puchino had 11 of the 27 steals made by Littleton.

George Washington made a lastminute free throw to beat Ponderosa, 54-53, in the 4A second round.

Littleton hit only 13 percent of its field goal attempts in a 50-12 second round loss to Pueblo West.

Boys basketball playoffs: How area teams fared STAFF REPORT

Five south metro area teams prevailed in second-round Class 5A boys playoff basketball games played on Feb. 29.

Sweet 16 games were scheduled to be held March 4, with the winning teams advancing to the Great Eight on March 7 at the Denver Coliseum.

Grandview, Valor Christian, Chaparral, Smoky Hill and Regis Jesuit were the teams advancing to the Sweet 16.

Fifth-ranked Grandview raced to a 34-point halftime lead and went on to collect an 86-49 victory over Aurora Hinkley.

Amondo Miller scored 17 points to help sixth-seeded Valor Christian earn a 65-61 victory over Rocky Mountain.

Chaparral, the No. 7 seed, connected on14 3-point shots and Konnor Ruth tied a school record with seven as the Wolverines downed Douglas County, 91-64. Ruth wound up with 23 points.

Tenth-seeded Smoky Hill got past Fossil Ridge, 105-76, and Regis

Jesuit, seeded 29th, pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament with a 69-65 win over No. 4 Cherry Creek.

Boulder outscored ThunderRidge, 15-9, in the fourth quarter and notched a 51-49 second-round win over the Grizzlies.

Denver East made 59 percent of its field goal attempts, used a thirdquarter flurry and then held on to down Legend, 65-59. No. 3 Ralston Valley held on to its 15-point halftime advantage in a 63-52 triumph over Arapahoe in another secondround contest.

Five teams notched first-round victories on games played Feb. 26 but teams from Highlands Ranch, Heritage, Rock Canyon and Castle View saw their seasons end.

ThunderRidge had a 28-point halftime lead and a 47-point advantage after three quarters in a 71-23 victory over Arvada West. Junior Garrett Arnold and senior Tommy Crawford each had 13 points for the Grizzlies.

Blakeley Stoughton scored 29 points and Regis Jesuit held off

Monarch for a 65-62 win.

A 29-point fourth quarter helped Legend earn a 77-65 win over Legacy.

Jaeton Hackley had 16 points to spark Douglas County’s 78-57 conquest of Rampart.

Senior Bryson Stephens scored 26 points while Derik Pranger and Korey Hess each had 16 points in Arapahoe’s 73-50 victory over Fort Collins.

Highlands Ranch went into overtime but lost 61-59 to Arvada West.

Fossil Ridge pulled away from Heritage in the second half in a 7760 win over the Eagles. Rock Canyon also came up short in overtime in a 68-64 loss to Rocky Mountain.

Castle View fell behind by 35 points heading into the fourth quarter and wound up losing, 75-38, to Overland.

Littleton and Pueblo Central were tied at halftime but the Wildcats pulled out a 56-51 win over the Lions in Class 4A first-round action. Ponderosa was not able to catch up to Lewis-Palmer in a 64-52 setback.

There is no way I can overlook the girls 5A state bracket.

Highlands Ranch coach Caryn Jarocki is the state leader with 660 wins and seven state championships so it’s hard not to say the Falcons, seeded sixth this season, could be the team to watch in the playoffs.

No team likes to see Highlands Ranch on its side of the bracket.

Defending champion Cherry Creek, top-seeded Valor Christian, Grandview, Regis Jesuit and Ralston Valley all have strong teams that have the potential to advance.

Class 3A boys and girls basketball teams completed district play last weekend and the state hockey playoffs are ready for the semifinals on March 5.
