C-470 project moving toward completion, CDOT says

Toll lanes expected to open in spring, project to be finished by summer

The C-470 Express Lanes project is slated to be completed this summer – a year behind schedule.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Construction on C-470 is nearly finished.

The years-long C-470 Express Lanes Project, which will add tolled lanes along the busy highway, is scheduled to be completed this summer, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT. That’s about a year after the original expected completion date, and four years after the project began in 2016.

CDOT placed the project’s contractor, a joint venture of Flatiron Construction and AECOM, in default last summer after repeated delays and what CDOT called misleading updates.

“CDOT’s priority is getting this completed as quickly and safely as possible so we can bring it to the traveling public,” said Tamara Rollison, a spokeswoman for CDOT. “You’ve probably noticed whenever you’re out there, there’s work taking place, in-

cluding weekend and night closures.”

Once completed, the project will add at least one, and in some places two toll lanes to each direction of the heavily congested corridor between I-25 and Wadsworth Boulevard. Motorists could save up to 18 minutes if traveling the full 12-mile length of the lanes, according to CDOT estimates.

Tolls could range as high as $6.60 for a full-length westbound trip during afternoon rush hour, according to CDOT documents. The high end for eastbound travel could be $4.85 during morning rush hour. Tolls will be lower in off-peak times and for motorists only traveling partway. The goal is to keep traffic moving at least 45 mph at all times.

The toll lanes are expected to be complete sometime in the spring, Rol-

lison said, and motorists will be able to use them for free for a few months while crews finalize installation and testing of tolling equipment.

Tolls will be assessed much like they are on E-470 east of I-25, Rollison said, utilizing license plate readers that will send a bill to the driver’s home. Drivers can also buy electronic passes that are good on all the state’s toll roads.

The remaining work is primarily paving, lane striping and signage installation, Rollison said.

In the meantime, CDOT is levying fines of $51,000 a day against Flatiron and AECOM for the behind-schedule work, Rollison said.

“We like these projects finished within a certain time frame,” Rollison said. “We’ve been exercising our recourse as laid out in our contract

with them.”

The project’s total cost is still in the neighborhood of $276 million, Rollison said. About $10 million of that is from Douglas County, and an additional $110 million came from state and federal funding.

Flatiron and AECOM are “working to safely expeditiously complete the project,” said Michael Swenson, a spokesman for Flatiron.

“We’ve been working with CDOT on this all the way through,” Swenson said. “We’ve focused significant resources on the project.”

Swenson declined to answer if the contractors have worked to change or improve their methods since being placed in default.

The project’s completion will bring welcome additional capacity to the local transportation grid, said Keith Reester, Littleton’s director of public works.

Still, Reester said, “you can’t build your way out of congestion.”

“You can, however, add capacity while you look at longer-term solutions: mode changes, shorter trips, working to help people live closer to their jobs and things like that,” Reester said. “You’re not going to get thousands of people to decide to stop driving tomorrow.”

The South Metro Denver Chamber has named a new chief executive officer. Jeff Keener, a chamber board member and owner of a marketing firm, replaces Robert Golden, who resigned in late 2019.

“As we approach the chamber’s 100-year anniversary, we’re excited to gain someone as passionate about the business community as Jeff Keener,” Christie Lee, the chamber’s board chair,

said in a news release.

“It’s an exciting time for the SMDC and we look forward to Keener’s leadership, especially as he helps evolve our best practices to reflect the growing business dynamics in the south metro Denver region.”

The chamber is poised to grow in 2020 and the years ahead thanks to a strong board and strong economy, especially

in the south metro Denver area, Keener said in the release.

“People join the chamber to be fully part of the community,” Keener said.

“I’m committed to making sure that we meet our members’ needs so that their desire to be involved in their community is satisfied. I appreciate our chamber’s important role: we are a critical nucleus for our various communities in the thriving south metro area.”

Keener owns JMB Marketing, a consultancy that provides businesses

support in the sales and marketing arenas. Keener was the winner of the chamber’s Leadership in Motion Award in 2012. He is a former councilman for the Town of Breckenridge and a former member of the board of directors for Colorado Ski Country USA. Keener has always been an active member of his community, including stints volunteering with the Littleton hockey and soccer associations, and with the Arapahoe High School lacrosse team.

City studying retail corridor changes, mobility options Businesses on University Boulevard, other major streets, may see reinvestment

Businesses focused on providing experiences, not products. Public places that attract crowds. Better connections to neighborhoods and trails. “Mini-main street” concepts intended for pedestrians.

These are among the features of retail centers that could see support from the City of Centennial’s upcoming plan to breathe life into its shopping corridors.

“Vacancies felt in shopping centers nationally and in our own Centennial backyard point to the conclusion that we have too much retail space, and often times the wrong kind of retail space, to accommodate the next generation of retail,” an excerpt from a city newsletter reads.

Consumers’ shift to buying more online and spending money on experiences rather than traditional goods is “profoundly affecting” the retail industry, the newsletter says, and the city is undergoing a multi-year effort to put in place a reinvestment strategy for its retail corridors. Five will be studied: University Boulevard first, followed by Smoky Hill Road, County Line Road, Arapahoe Road and the Interstate 25 corridor. The order is subject to change, according to Allison Wittern, city spokeswoman. Generally, the city will examine the full length of the five corridors within the city’s boundaries.

Along with new retail concepts, the city’s strategy may consider opportunities for new design standards and mixed-use areas, such as including restaurants, entertainment establishments, housing and office uses, among others.

Meanwhile, also underway is a study of the Colorado Boulevard corridor from Orchard to County Line roads to provide more mobility options and offer better trail connectivity for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The study will identify potential projects along the road, which could mean added bike lanes or looking at opportunities for more transit stops, but the outcomes are unclear at this point, Wittern said.

What comes of the studies could affect the future of the city’s economy and tax revenue for years to come.

Here’s a look at how they’ll unfold and how residents can participate.

Tackling risks Neighborhood retail centers are scattered throughout Centennial,

and “every center is at potential risk due to macro-level trends,” according to a city council planning document.

To confront the challenge, the city began studying the University Boulevard corridor in 2019 by interacting with shopping center owners, analyzing trends and market factors, and conducting a survey of shoppers’ experiences in the corridor, Wittern said.

In December, members of city council, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, city staff, design and retail experts, shopping center owners, and developers toured the corridor’s shopping centers and discussed opportunities for next steps, according to the newsletter.

“This is the first corridor retail strategy development of this kind that the city has undertaken,” Wittern said.

City staff are reviewing ideas to draft possible strategies as a framework for discussion with community members along the corridor this spring, according to the newsletter.

“No formal recommendations will be presented to city council before we have further engaged with the community,” Wittern added.

The planning process will likely produce a variety of strategies to spur reinvestment, and it is not currently known what the city would invest or what its exact tools will be, Wittern said.

‘Corridor experience’ An informal meeting about the Colorado Boulevard transportation study took place Jan. 21 at the King Soopers at University Boulevard and East Dry Creek Road, according to the city’s website. A more formal public meeting about the study is anticipated for this spring, Wittern said.

“The solutions will focus on safety, the corridor experience, active living, connections to the existing trail network, bicycle facilities, access to transit, regional collaboration and collaboration with Littleton Public Schools,” the site reads.

One of the project’s goals is to gather input about uses of the corridor, and a public meeting is expected in spring 2020.

The project team will identify short- and long-term improvements that could be implemented. The study is anticipated to be complete in summer 2020, according to the site.

The study is a part of the city’s comprehensive plan, Centennial NEXT, the site says. A comprehensive plan can affect a city’s priorities for development, parks and open space, and transportation.

Evidence conflicting in who shot Cherokee Trail teen

Four suspects were accused in death of Lloyd Chavez, 18, in east Centennial

Social media messages appear to show the fourth suspect in the death of a Cherokee Trail High School student admitting involvement in the fatal shooting that took place in May, according to investigators.

A Snapchat account that appears to be that of 17-year-old Demarea Deshawn Mitchell received a message after the shooting from someone who expressed shock at hearing of the incident.

Things “didn’t go as planned, and it was the only choice. I’m sorry,” Mitchell’s apparent account wrote back.

He’s one of the four teens suspected of driving to the home of Lloyd Alvin Chavez, 18, in east Centennial during what was planned as a robbery of vaping products Chavez sold, according to arrest affidavits.

Kenneth Alfonso Gallegos, who turned 18 in mid-December, had an arraignment set for Feb. 24. The court, on Oct. 25, denied a motion to have Gallegos’ case transferred to juvenile court, where he would have had a chance at a more lenient sentence, if convicted.

Dominic Jarrod Stager, who is 17 or

18 based on sheriff ’s and court records, and 17-year-old Juliana Alexis Serrano both had their criminal cases dismissed and were transferred to juvenile court.

All four were originally being prosecuted as adults.

Serrano and Stager were students at Cherokee Trail, and Gallegos was a Grandview High School student who had recently transferred from Cherokee Trail. Mitchell was identified in photos provided by a Cherokee Trail school resource officer.

The Snapchat messages came to light at a Feb. 18 preliminary hearing in Arapahoe County District Court, where evidence connected Mitchell to the shooting but didn’t amount to confirmation that he pulled the trigger.

At a preliminary hearing, a judge decides whether there is enough evidence to take the case to trial — it doesn’t decide whether a suspect is guilty.

The four suspects all were initially charged with first-degree felony murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and two “sentence enhancers” related to violent crime with a weapon and causing death, which apply if the case ends in a guilty plea or verdict, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Ben Leutwyler ruled that three of Mitchell’s charges can proceed to trial, including those related to felony murder and aggravated robbery, and that he will be held in jail without bond.

Chavez prior to any kind of wrestling,” Leutwyler said. He added: “There is conflicting evidence as to who shot Mr. Chavez.”

The identity of a shooter in a group that allegedly causes a murder doesn’t determine whether a defendant is guilty, Leutwyler noted. If a suspect played a part, that can qualify as firstdegree felony murder.

Mitchell still awaits a hearing in midMarch that will determine if his case will move to juvenile court.

Backstory of crimes Mitchell’s hearing shed more light on the history of the suspects in the May 8 shooting.

According to court affidavits, here’s how that incident unfolded: The four suspects pulled up to Chavez’s home, where he walked up to a window of the car and received cash from Serrano, court documents say. The documents allege that Chavez walked away without giving them the product, Serrano said, and Mitchell got out of the car and questioned Chavez about it.

Chavez threw Mitchell onto the lawn, according to Serrano’s account, and that’s when he was shot. Chavez was a few inches taller than Mitchell and a bit heavier, according to court testimony Feb. 18. Chavez was an accomplished rugby player.

Before Chavez died during surgery at the hospital, he told a nurse and a sheriff ’s deputy that “Kenny” — Gallegos — shot him and that the shooter was a junior at Cherokee Trail, according to authorities. Serrano said it was Mitchell who shot Chavez.

At the Feb. 18 hearing, Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office Investigator Niki Bales testified that a close friend of Chavez said Gallegos and Gallegos’ friends had jumped Chavez before and that Chavez had been robbed once before.

The investigator also testified that before the May incident where Chavez

was shot, Gallegos would brag that he would rob vape shops and walks around “strapped” with a gun.

Stager told Bales that Gallegos asked if he could use Stager’s gun. Stager told Bales of a gun with a laser light on it.

Conflicting evidence In her account to authorities, Serrano wavered on whether Mitchell or Stager had the gun during the incident, Bales said.

Serrano said Chavez tackled Mitchell, and then Stager and Gallegos got out of the car, and that’s when the gun went off. Serrano said neither Gallegos nor Stager intervened physically, according to authorities.

Stager said Mitchell pointed the gun at Chavez’s head and Chavez moved Mitchell’s arm and struggled with him before the gunshot.

Serrano eventually said she didn’t actually see the gun in anyone’s hands but described it as a “smaller gun” and saw a laser on Chavez around the time he was shot.

The four suspects were in shock because they didn’t intend to shoot Chavez but, rather, threaten him with the gun if he didn’t give them the product, according to Serrano’s account.

Mitchell has not made any statements in the case, Bales said.

Along with Mitchell’s apparent mention of his involvement in the case in Snapchat messages, he also posted on Facebook about the shooting the day afterward, Bales said. The Snapchat messages named the three other suspects and said the user, apparently Mitchell, was with them at the time.

A defense attorney for Mitchell said authorities don’t have his phone — messages were provided by the Snapchat company after court orders — and argued that because it isn’t known who has access to the account, it could be anyone sending the messages. The judge allowed the messages to be admitted as evidence.

Former Arapahoe High teacher sentenced to five years in jail

Former Arapahoe High School teacher Ian Ahern was sentenced to five years in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

Ahern, 42, pleaded guilty on Jan. 24, nearly a year to the day since his 2019 arrest stemming from incidents that occurred in 2014. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped two Ahern charges of sex assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Ahern was sentenced to five years in jail, according to court records, and will be required to register as a

sex offender for life.

Ahern emotionally manipulated a 17-year-old student who came to him for support after the 2013 murder of Arapahoe High School student Claire Davis, according to an affidavit.

Ahern groomed the student for months, according to the affidavit, and groped and forced himself on the student on several occasions.

The case came to light in early 2019, after the former student told her boyfriend that she was still tormented by what happened and was afraid Ahern would abuse other girls. The boyfriend then made an anonymous report through Safe2Tell.

Ahern previously pleaded guilty in September, but his plea was invalidated by a state Supreme Court decision that nullified sentences including both jail terms and probation.

Bennet: Take politics out of health care Fresh off failed presidential bid, senator says high cost of living weighs on Americans

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet isn’t running for president, but that doesn’t mean he’s done taking on President Trump.

Bennet, who dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary in early February after a lackluster showing in the New Hampshire primary, spoke to about 100 constituents at a town hall meeting in south Jefferson County on Feb. 18.

“This is the most important election of our lives,” Bennet said. “When you think about the obligation of a citizen of a republic, particularly when we have a president who doesn’t believe in democracy, the separation of powers, the freedom of the press or the independence of the judiciary, that’s a moment when citizenship really matters.”

Though Bennet said he has not yet chosen a candidate to endorse in the primary, or even if he will endorse one, he said he would back whomever the nominee is because he feels voting Trump out of office is vital.

“There’s a concern that our democracy is at risk and the rule of law is being jeopardized,” Bennet said.

“When I ask people why they voted for Donald Trump, I get a similar answer: ‘We wanted to blow the place up.’ Well, congratulations, you achieved your objective. But what are we going to do for our kids and our place in the world?”

Bennet condemned Trump’s treatment of border security, saying his mother, a Holocaust survivor, was horrified by the Trump administration’s policy of separating children from their parents who crossed illegally at the southern border.

“She said she saw herself in those kids,” Bennet said. “She knows what it does to a person over a lifetime. I don’t think our country is built on nativist hostility or anti-immigrant sentiment.

We have to overcome it.”

Beyond presidential politics, Bennet said he hears similar concerns at numerous town halls: citizens saying they can’t afford some combination of housing, health care, higher education and early childhood education. Many are worried their children will end up worse-off financially than their parents.

Gardner: ‘I know we can do better’ on mental health Senator, behavioral health students hold roundtable at Cherry Creek campus

For those skeptical that the federal government affects their daily lives, U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner’s conversation with some metro area high school students may offer some hope.

In Colorado, “we are losing a person every seven hours to suicide, and I know we can do better,” Gardner, a Yuma Republican, said at a Feb. 19 roundtable on mental health at the Cherry Creek Innovation Campus in the Centennial area.

The senator listened to students’ experiences with programs at the career-technical education campus and talked about filling a shortage of behavioral health workers.

The Innovation Campus, where high school students in the Cherry Creek district come to learn skills in several trades — from construction management to cybersecurity — is where students like Adrianna Fitzgerald are preparing for jobs in behavioral health.

Health care professionals often end up burned out from their work, and the Innovation Campus’ program teaches students how to care for them-

“Not only are we helping others, we’re helping ourselves,” said Fitzgerald, a Smoky Hill senior.

The campus works hand-in-hand with HealthONE, a network of Denver-area hospitals and clinics, on its health curriculum, according to campus principal Mark Morgan. It’s a partnership that gives students a shot at transitioning straight into the industry after graduation.

“A big part (of addressing mental health) is the workforce,” Gardner said while speaking to reporters after the roundtable. “We need to get these

pipelines filled. We have to remove the stigma around suicide and have discussions.”

Tackling the health workforce shortage is one policy area Gardner has recently targeted with a Senate bill he and Sen. Kamala Harris, a California Democrat, introduced in September.

The Mental Health Professionals Workforce Shortage Loan Repayment Act would authorize a loan repayment program for those who agree to practice in areas with a shortage of mental health professionals. The system would repay one-sixth of a worker’s educational debt for each year of service, up to $250,000 over six years, according to a news release from Gardner’s office.

A perhaps more direct initiative is Gardner’s bill to make 9-8-8 the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Veterans Crisis

Line, which currently are accessed through a 10-digit number. That bill was introduced in October by Gardner and Sens. Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat; Jerry Moran, a Kansas Republican; and Jack Reed, a Rhode Island Democrat.

“In a mental health emergency, it is almost impossible to remember the current 10-digit hotline,” and changing the number will help save lives and connect people to crucial support, a handout from Gardner’s office read.

Colorado recently ranked among both the 10 highest youth suicide rates and overall suicide rates in states across the country, according to the Colorado Office of Suicide Prevention.

Local chef wants to set the bar for Indian cuisine

Urban Village, a new upscale Indian restaurant, strays from traditional curry, tandoori chicken

Charlie Mani insists what he cooks is not Indian food—at least not anything like what Americans expect of Indian food. The kitchen he runs at Urban Village, serves, for lack of a better

term, Indian dishes. Mani’s description of his own cuisine differs from the genre of food they serve.

Mani, who went to culinary school in his home city of Chennai in South India, and worked at some of the top Indian restaurants in New York City until recently, said the way he does cooking is unlike anybody else.

“My way of cooking is always a surprise,” Mani said. “I want to do something not usual.”

Mani, of Lone Tree, strives to break out of the box Americans typically know as Indian food—tandoori chicken, curry, naan bread. His dishes start with Indian specialties he and adds his

own flair to it. Some of the staples are still there. The short menu has things like naan, tandoori chicken and coconut curry, but Mani’s take on dishes like a kale moong dal chaat, breaded cauliflower or golgappa is where his creative influence can be tasted.

Mani, a personable yet stubborn creator, does not concede the costumer is always right. Mani relies on his education and his inner artistic voice to continually raise his own bar. He describes his affection for cooking in multiple forms — to him cooking is his wife, the restaurant is his home and

Effort brings music to life for students STAFF REPORT

The annual Bringing Music to Life Instrument Drive kicks off March 2, continuing its mission to bring the gift of music to Colorado students in underfunded music programs.

This is the 10th year for the instrument drive, which has impacted the lives of 15,000 children in hundreds of elementary, middle and high schools in Colorado. To date, more than 5,000 instruments have been awarded with a value exceeding $2 million.

Coloradans are asked to bring their gently used band or orchestra instruments to any of 17 donation from March 2-15. Instrument donations may be tax-deductible. Drop-off locations can be found at www.bringmusic.org.

Donated instrument are then repaired by technicians at the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology and Boomer Music Company in Fort Collins, and instruments are donated to music school programs before the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

“Our band program has been able to continuously improve due to the

generosity of Bringing Music to Life,” Ouray School music teacher Michael Scott said in a news release. “We currently are able to offer band to all students in grades 5 and 6, while our high school program also continues to improve.”

At Denver’s North High School, music teacher Katy Lushman has been able to start a Modern Band program and says her students love it.

“This class has given me access to instruments that I’ve never had access to before. I really enjoy being able to play electric guitar and bass. It’s a new experience,” one of Lushman’s students said.

Another said, “It’s helped me discover my love for music and for playing.”

At Ranum Middle School in Westminster, a student’s new instrument “has helped me become more creative … It has opened a door to music.”

Those who don’t have an instrument to donate can help by contributing to the repair fund. Money donations go to repairing and refurbishing the instruments, ensuring that they’re in excellent condition when awarded to students.

“Instrument repairs are the single greatest expense of the program, with the average repair costing us about $155,” Blatt said in the release. “CIOMIT is once again doing all refurbishing and reconditioning at a significant discount. Again this year, we’re pleased that Boomer Music Company is joining the effort to repair donated instruments.”

City examining options for arts-culture organization

Centennial sits amid several suburban cities that boast entities to support arts and cultural activities, but it doesn’t have its own.

The Centennial City Council will soon hear options on how to change that — if it so chooses. And it may be an uphill battle no matter what.

“I think it’s a marvelous idea, one that I’ve been promoting since 2006,” former Centennial Mayor Randy Pye said when he heard that the city is considering forming an organization.

Pye, who was elected as the city’s first mayor in 2001, said an arts organization is a crucial part of creating a community’s distinct identity. The change would

the customers are his friends, family and guests. Mani personally attends to each table. He believes giving the back of the house a face is something the industry is missing.

“When it comes to cooking, I don’t listen to anyone,” Mani said. “Everybody screwed up enough of my industry. There’s enough screwing up.

As a result, the restaurant already has a reliable base of regulars who make complicated orders without

signal that that Centennial, a city that was established less than 20 years ago, is “more mature now,” Pye said.

And that “we’re not just a passthrough to another city that has a cultural arts facility,” Pye added.

Having a stronger cultural arts footprint — where works such as plays are showing and kids have a place to explore the arts — can have a positive economic effect too, Pye said.

“Interestingly enough, when companies come to a city to say, ‘Are we going to start our company here?,’ they look at the amenities the city provides.”

City council will hear ideas about creating an arts organization at its March 2 study-session public meeting. In June, council asked city staff to look into options on creating a nonprofit, a city

board or commission, or something else, according to Allison Wittern, city spokeswoman.

Parker, Lone Tree, Greenwood Village, Castle Pines, Castle Rock, Aurora, Englewood, Lakewood and Thornton all have foundations or other entities related to the arts, with varying degrees of independence from the city, according to a fact sheet from a Centennial City Council meeting. Aurora’s Cultural Services office is a division of the city government, for example.

Littleton is home to the Town Hall Arts Center.

Suburban arts centers rely more on public arts funding more than their counterparts in the larger cities, partly because of a lack of longstanding traditions with philanthropic groups, Pye

said.

“You’re going to need public funding and private funding,” Pye said. “It’s going to be a mix that I’m not sure the city is going to want to walk down.”

If the city were to consider creating an actual arts center, the timeline to complete it would likely be about 20 years, Pye said. The city would have to make the pitch to citizens and convince them public funding is worth it, he added.

But the city has not indicated that it would consider going the route of creating a center in itself.

Pye felt that opening the conversation about arts initiatives in general is a positive step.

“There are so many opportunities when you get into the cultural arts

Though his influences come from his home palate, Mani says he doesn’t want to be identified as an Indian chef. It can pigeonhole him as a creator and create certain expectations of himself.

“I never prepared ‘Indian’ food in my life before coming to America,” Mani said. “I grew up cooking everything totally different. When I moved here, my name is Charles so on my resume they assume I’m a white boy, but when I go there they say, ‘Sorry, we don’t serve Indian food.’ If I wanted to cook Indian food, I might have stayed in India.”

Urban Village has been open since October in Lone Tree’s entertainment district. The restaurant has received acclaim from local food critics for its unique take on Indian food.

The restaurant started out as a dream. Ramesh Madakasira wanted to bring a high-end Indian restaurant to the Denver area. Madakasira and his partner Gopinath Desam, both from Lone Tree, are both software engineers by trade. Mani moved to Lone Tree last year. Urban Village is their first restaurant venture.

“I take it as a challenge,” Madakasira said. “If there’s a challenge, there’s an opportunity with it as

well.”

Madakasira said they hope to bring Urban Village to downtown Denver and across the metro region. Lone Tree was a good place to start, he said.

“For me, it doesn’t give me stress ever because I like it,” Madakasira said.

To Mani, he’s the opposite.

“The stress is what keeps me coming back,” he said.

Mani said he can’t get enough of cooking.

“For me, that stress is the one thing that makes me wake up and come again and again and do what I do.”

Thornton to Centennial I’m 53, and I live in Thornton. I’ve been in Thornton for about 12 years, but I lived nearby in Brighton for about 10 years before that. But we ended up in Thornton for the community and schools.

Centennial Airport’s economic impact nearly doubles in five years STAFF REPORT

In just more than five years, Centennial Airport’s economic contribution to the state’s economy nearly doubled to $2.1 billion in 2018, up from $1.32 billion in 2013, according to the 2020 Colorado Division of Aeronautics Airport Economic Impact Report.

“Centennial Airport has taken a unique approach to its relationships with the industry, business partners, tenants, and the community,” Centennial Airport Chief Executive Officer Robert Olislagers said in a news release. “A little more than five years ago, this airport set out to position itself as not just another general aviation airport, but as a valued business partner, and we are pleased to see the results of this effort in this year’s Airport Economic Impact Report.”

From 2013 to 2018, the number of jobs increased from 6,792 to 10,341, and the payroll increased from $404.9 million to $593.5 million, according to the 2020 impact study. The numbers for the 2020 Economic Impact Report are from the calendar year 2018.

“The Division of Aeronautics is proud to partner with Centennial Airport and 73 other public-use airports as we work statewide to support aviation and airports as a key part of Colorado’s multi-modal transportation system,” CDOT Aeronautics Director

David Ulane said in the news release.

“The increased economic impact at Centennial is echoed statewide, underscoring the importance and value of general aviation across all of Colorado.”

Centennial Airport’s growth since 1998, according to the 2020 impact report: 2020 impact study (numbers for 2020 are from the 2018 calendar year): 10,341 jobs, $592.5 million in payroll, $2.1 billion in business revenue/impact 2013 impact study: 6,792 jobs, $404.9 million in payroll, and $1.32 billion in business revenue/impact 2008 impact study: 10,458 jobs, $356.6 million in payroll $897.1 million in business revenue/impact 2003 impact study: 8,594 jobs, $331 million in payroll, and $815.1 million in business revenue/impact 1998 impact study: 4,586 jobs, $97 million in payroll, and $312.4 million in business revenue/impact “We transformed ourselves from a transactional role to a strategic role, from being a landlord to being a strategic partner,” Olislagers said in the release.

The aviation sector’s direct impact on Colorado’s overall economy has also grown, seeing a 32 percent increase over 2013, according to the 2020 report.

When possible, the Division of Aeronautics conducts the Colorado Aviation Economic Impact study every five years, according to the news release.

The study evaluates the economic impacts of on-airport businesses and activities and other spin-off or multiplier impacts (both indirect and induced) of airports throughout Colorado.

The study communicates the benefits of airports, both quantitative and qualitative, and validates the continued public investment in Colorado’s airport system. This final product includes a compilation of real-life stories that illustrate how aviation impacts the state’s businesses and communities, beyond providing impact numbers.

One of 56 general aviation airports in the state, Centennial Airport is one of the busiest airports in the nation, with more than 350,000 take-offs and landings in 2019.

The complete Colorado Aviation Economic Impact Report is expected in April.

Life without coffee is ... well ... well, it’s bad

I depend upon hot, black coffee — lots of it —to write. Without hot, black coffee, I am at a loss for, uh, something.

Recent periodontal surgery means no Craig Marshall hot, black coffee for two weeks.

There are no hot foods for two

weeks either.

That’s manageable, but I have learned that foods that are generally served hot should not be served cold.

Cold macaroni and cheese is not very comforting. Neither are scrambled eggs or mashed potatoes.

There are no Peanut M&Ms for two weeks and that’s another hardship. I pretend they are vitamins and take a fistful daily.

I have to eat on the left side of my mouth. When the right side of my mouth has healed, Dr. Kim will repeat the procedure on the left side of my mouth.

That will mean two more weeks of abstinence.

I have learned something else that’s very important: namely, that time goes by.

No: It gallops by.

It’s another Olympics year. It’s another presidential election year.

Two weeks will come and go, then another post-operation period without coffee will come and go, and it will be summer, then fall, then 2021 before I know it.

And I will be back on the scalding nectar made from coffee beans, without which my similes are as flat as a board and dull as dullness.

The story about Chandler and the screenplay sounds like someone made it up, but it’s true.

Chandler was a heavy drinker. How he was able to drink and write is incomprehensible. I’ve tried.

He was offered more money to finish the script, but insisted on alcohol.

Chandler explained the drinking wouldn’t be a problem, but the aftermath would be. A doctor and nurses

hen it comes to competitive events, I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy a close game as opposed to a rout, even when it may mean the team that I am rooting for has a chance of losing. You may understand this or feel this way too. A blowout of any kind and in any type of competition loses WINNING my interest pretty WORDS quickly.

Give me a good buzzer-beater, extra innings, a last-second Hail Mary or field goal, or a 40-foot putt on the 18th hole to win a championship any day.

Here’s the interesting thing. Although Michael Norton many of us enjoy the thrill and excitement of a close game, when it comes to our personal lives and careers, we want the easy wins. We look for the path of least resistance and hope that we can coast down victory lane. As I was having this conversation with a buddy of mine, and as we talked about some of the easy wins we have enjoyed together and some of the really close calls,

we agreed that although it was nice to cruise in with another win at times, it was the competition and energy of winning the close ones that gave us both a greater sense of gratification.

To compete at anything, and to succeed at the highest level, requires work. And I am not just talking about competitive sports. So when we do practice and work at our craft, whatever it may be, and when we win, the victory feels so much better and tastes so much sweeter. Knowing that we earned it carries so much more meaning than having something given to us, doesn’t it?

Holidays are over — it’s tax season

ime flies. The holidays are a brief memory, winter is more than half over and we’re looking forward to spring. With spring comes the deadline for filing your tax return. So, don’t let time slip away from you before you are able to gather all of your information to potentially get all the benefits of the lowest tax liability possible.

FINANCIAL We are currently STRATEGIES still under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. Based on that tax law change, nearly 29 million more households will be better off taking the standard deduction instead yof itemizing.* Collecting all of your Patricia Kummer medical, charitable, job expenses, property tax and mortgage information is very timeconsuming. And now, if you are better off taking the standard deduction, that information might not even be used. You should still collect the data just to make sure and it is also a good exercise to understand where some of your expenses go.

You may find you are very close to

the standard deduction limit, which is $24,400 for Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) for 2019. If that is the case, you might consider bunching your deductions every other year. So, for example, you could take the standard deduction for 2019, then in 2020, double up your charitable contributions. This could allow you to use up the $10,000 limit with property taxes and state taxes paid during the year. If you don’t have a paycheck where you are paying Colorado state tax during the year, and you are not paying Colorado estimated payments, there may be room to double up on your property taxes.

This means that in December you can call the county and get an estimate of what your property taxes will be for the following year and pay all or some of them in 2020. Then, you may be able to itemize on your 2020 tax filing and take the standard deduction the following year. The standard deduction will increase by $200 for single filers and $400 for joint filers for 2020.

Tax time is a good time to consider updating your financial plan as well.

You are already collecting the W-2, tax withholding, investment sales, dividends and small business revenue and expenses. You might as well finish updating your plan at the same time.

Why do we need to repeal Columbus Day in Colorado?

F

ew people know that Colorado was the original state to establish Columbus Day as a state holiday. So decades later, why would we be moving to repeal it in the Legislature now?

There are close to 100 organizations with thousands of people who want to eliminate the day as a state holiday.

Why? In seminary, as I have been taking courses in American Indian history, culture, and GUEST worldviews and have been involved COLUMN with the local Native community, I now know why this is so important to do.

Most of us going through school in the United States were taught that America was “discovered” by Christopher CoLinda Newell lumbus and that he and his crew made friends with the Indians. Well, it turns out, this is false. In fact, historians have proven that Columbus actually landed in the Bahamas. When he arrived, there were already more than 100 million Indigenous peoples living in the Americas.

It also turns out that Columbus was not such a good guy after all, let alone a hero who deserves a holiday named after him. Prior to his voyage abroad, he was engaged in the Afri-

can slave trade on behalf of Portugal.

Then once he arrived here, he and his followers began the process of enslaving, kidnapping and killing the Indigenous by establishing the encomienda system that enslaved them and forced them to produce gold for Columbus’ enterprise, under penalty of torture and/or death. It has also been revealed that they snatched babies from Indian mothers and killed them, preventing their population from growing.

The Columbus Day holiday has been historically viewed by many as a celebration of Italian-American pride, which has stopped a repeal of the holiday. Yet, as some have now realized the accurate history and the harmful effects of the holiday’s name on their Native American sisters and brothers, the communities have gotten together with a compromise. The replacement will be to instead honor a true ItalianAmerican heroine in Colorado history, Frances Cabrini, who helped establish 67 charitable institutions including hospitals, schools, and orphanages.

The current bill will repeal Colorado’s designation of Columbus Day as a state holiday and replace it with Cabrini Day. The conception of Cabrini Day is a compromise collaboration between leaders in the Indigenous communities, Italian communities, and anti-racist stakeholders.

Long term capital gains (LTCG) — those assets held for more than 12 months — qualify for the special longterm capital gains rate. Joint filers can earn up to $80,000 taxable income this year and pay zero on LTCG. Joint filers over the $80,000 limit will still only

pay 15% on LTCG up to $496,600 of taxable income. These are relatively low tax rates for the ability to trim profits and potentially reduce the overall risk in your portfolio.

Gary McNee Gary McNee, 80, of Littleton Colorado died on February 14 after a heroic struggle with heart and lung disease. He is survived by his wife Carolyn McNee (married 1962), daughter Jody Jamison (Matt) and granddaughters Payton and Kelsey, daughter Marne Katsanis (John) and granddaughters Madeline and Sawyer, sisters Kara Brockschink (John) and Loralea Francis. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Mildred McNee and sister Connie Swartzendruber.

Gary was born on October 28, 1939 in Cedar Rapids Iowa. He graduated from Norway High School, where he was active in 4H: raising, showing, and presenting. He received a BA from Cornell College and a MA in counseling from the University of Iowa He retired after 30 years as a coun-

selor at Littleton High School, making permanent impact on many students’ personal and academic lives. He received a service award from the Arapahoe-Douglas Area Vocational school and was a representative in the Littleton Education Association.

His passion was cars: restoring them, driving them, reading about them, and in recent years YouTubing them. He belonged to the Mountain Plains Corvette Club. He was truly a “car person”. He also enjoyed World War II history, traveling, his dogs, and many events with his children and grandchildren.

ithin a single week, dozens of regulars find their way to the 2300 block of Arapahoe and Curtis streets in Denver.

Steven Barth, a jazz keyboard player, leaves the homeless shelter he’s been staying at for eight months, headed to a weekly dance group at the St. Francis Center, a daytime shelter on Curtis Street.

Ashley Anderson and Paul Laurendine, a married couple who met at the day shelter, also make their way to Curtis Street each week, drawn to the dance group where they first bonded.

Richard Beck, an artist who goes by the name Gonzo, walks from his Denver home to the RedLine Contemporary Art Center on Arapahoe Street — where, having once slept behind the building each night, he has since accepted a position as studio coordinator.

Every week, these individuals are drawn to the arts programs that happen to run in the back-toback buildings. On Tuesday and Saturday afternoons, RedLine invites aspiring artists to the Reach Studio at 2350 Arapahoe St. And on Thursday mornings, ballet company Wonderbound holds a dance group at the St. Francis Center, 2323 Curtis St. The Denver arts groups, which each began within the last decade, seek to serve people experiencing homelessness in the metro area.

More than anything, participants say the programs are about momentarily leaving behind the negative to embrace the positive.

Artist Vanessa Constanti has four paintings featured in RedLine’s current exhibition. Having previously faced housing insecurity, “this is the first time I’ve been able to have an outlet for my art,” the artist said.

Participants also say that programs like these are few and far between.

“I wish it would last longer.

There’s not much else to do,” said Barth, who often sits on the edge

of the dance floor in the St. Francis Center’s clothing room, using drumsticks to keep the beat while others are dancing.

“It feels good to move,” he said.

“It makes your heart beat.”

Programs’ purposes While the programs seek to achieve a common goal, each one

approaches that goal differently.

The Pari Passu dance program — named after the Latin term for “equal step” — specifically engages those served by the St. Francis Center. Every Thursday, participants decide how to spend the hour, whether that means dancing together or simply discussing music, said group coordinator Heather Sutton.

“This is a population that is told a lot what they can and can’t do, so we try to meet whatever the demand is that day,” Sutton said.

“One of the first things people lose when they’re experiencing financial hardship is access to the arts. It’s important for us to provide that.”

Directly after the hour wraps up at the center, Sutton holds another group at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, 2111 Champa St., Denver.

Sutton also coordinates for group members to occasionally watch Wonderbound dance rehearsals or attend local shows.

Pari Passu participant Debra Ann added that for her, the program is more than a chance to enjoy the arts; it’s also an opportunity to encourage those who are facing the same hardships that she is.

‘They stole him out of jail’ Local author’s book shares story of last racial lynching in South Carolina

In May 1947 the courthouse in Greenville, South Carolina was the site for a trial that made national news and asked the question: Was a lynching possibly legal under any circumstances?

Littleton author Will Gravely, a native of Pickens, the town near Greenville where the lynching victim had been abducted from jail, was 7 at the time of the incident and was unaware of it then. He went on to teach history and religious history at the University of Denver. He decided to take an in-depth look at the scene and the ensuing story — involving court records (there was no transcript of the trial), files of local and some national newspapers and magazines, and conversations with locals who remembered ...

National press figures appeared to record the scene for newspapers and magazines — including British author Rebecca West, aka Dame Cecily Isabel Fairfield DBE, who filed

A farmer had found 48-year-old taxi driver Thomas Watson Brown injured and bleeding on the night of Feb. 15, 1947 — a Saturday — and called for help. Brown was transferred to the local hospital in critical condition, and died two days later.

Investigation on the night of Feb. 15 found tracks from Brown’s cab led to Tessie Earle’s home, where police found a gun — the probable weapon used — a jacket with stains still showing after washing and shoes that fitted the tracks. They belonged to a 24-year-old black man, Willie Earle, who was arrested and locked in the Pickens jail.

By the day after the attack, other cab drivers had convened and an angry mob started talking about taking Earle out of the jail cell. A caravan of 31 men arrived at the jail and pushed their way to Earle’s cell, where they grabbed him and went to a pre-chosen site to “interrogate” the young man.

Earle was shot, stabbed and bludgeoned, with the dead body left on the ground as the men scattered. Soon

after the body was found, the FBI entered the scene in addition to state and local law officers — although the FBI withdrew several days later.

Gravely spins a story of passions, mob psychology, individual portraits and rivalries — and a prevailing point of view that is not as evident today, although it does keep surfacing in some news reports...

The 31 men were tried as a group and much of Gravely’s writing describes the words and actions that ensued — the judge’s rulings, the steamy, crowded courtroom — as well as profiles of many of the mob members. (A list at the end of the book tells age, family status, education and occupation of the group, which adds to an overall image of the community.)

The writing is crisp and colorful and keeps a reader turning pages to see what’s next. (It’s hard to put it down and go tend to whatever else is pending!)

We are told that Bemis Library has a copy in its collection and Gravely says the University of South Carolina publication is available at Tattered Cover, Aspen Grove.

Tattered Cover will have copies for sale at the Littleton Museum lecture.

Gravely has also been talking at Sunday Forums at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Littleton.

Esports space gives gamers community Lone Tree Hub facility will open doors March 3

Becoming highly skilled at a video game often means spending hours in isolation: a dark room with few distractions and caffeine at the ready to deter anything that could disrupt hours-long bouts of gaming. Gamers who profess devotion to “the grind” can spend thousands of hours a year in isolation.

Chris Curtis and the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District want to change that.

Curtis is SSPRD’s first esports program coordinator. He is in charge of setting up the first esports-dedicated space in the district at the Lone Tree Hub, 8827 Lone Tree Parkway. He wants to create a place where developing gaming skills doesn’t have to be antisocial.

“It’s really important to get kids out of the house into a social space playing games rather than by themselves, because there’s a lot more to be learned from video games in a social setting versus playing at home by yourself,” Curtis said. “That’s a big focus of mine.”

South Suburban has a spring break esports camp scheduled for the weeks of March 16-19 and March 23-27. The district is planning to have after-

school programs and various camps come spring.

One such camp Curtis is planning would be exclusively for girls to meet and learn about esports, an opportunity to encourage more female participation in esports. Curtis also wants to create adult leagues so the entire community can share in the common interest of gaming.

The esports room, completely designed by Curtis, resembles a living room. Curtis wants to evoke an inviting atmosphere for interested newcomers or longtime gamers to hang out. The room will have six gaming consoles, six PCs, three TVs streaming Twitch (a popular app where gamers can watch other gamers play), couches and specialized gaming chairs. The Lone Tree Hub esports room will have its own Twitch stream so parents can monitor their children at the Hub from afar.

“The idea is to make it easily accessible to everybody,” Curtis said.

“Whether they want to watch because they’re curious, peek in to see what we’re about, come spend some time with their child here, maybe learn a thing or two about video games — there’s a place here for everybody.”

The esports room is age restricted, but a parent may sign off for a child to play a game outside of the recommended age limit. A date of birth is required to set up an account at the esports hub. The games will focus on team play and one-on-one types of games, Curtis said.

Nicole Stehlik, assistant director of recreation, said South Suburban wanted to create a place for kids to congregate and provide a resource to parents curious to learn more about the industry.

“There are very few places kids can congregate and learn new things about the sport itself,” Stehlik said.

“Not only that, but it’s an opportunity to educate the parents as well. When you’re thinking about other sports, parents are always asking other parents or coaches what they think about a sport … They don’t necessarily have a great avenue for this particular program, so that’s what we’re trying to do as well.”

Curtis, 26, has been playing video games, either competitively or casually, for 20 years. Outside of South Suburban, Curtis runs Buttons on Wake-Up, a tournament series for esports combat-style games in Colorado Springs.

Curtis said it’s a fallacy that gamers need to commit to “the grind” to improve. He believes interacting in a community of gamers, learning from each other and lifting each other up, is the key to becoming successful.

High school students can earn scholarships for their gaming prowess.

The top gamers can make a living off video games. In 2019, esports viewership, through apps like Twitch, was 454 million, according to Business Insider. The industry is worth more than $1 billion, according to a 2019 report from Newzoo, a games and esports analytics group.

Curtis wants the new esports space to be a safe space for gamers to be in their element.

“You can come in here, relax and let things go for a few hours,” Curtis said.

“Video games are an escape for a lot of people, myself included, even at 26 years old. I understand the need to get those things out and this is a healthy way to express.”

“I like to lift people up. Instead of sitting out there alone, we can come here and have fellowship,” said Debra Ann, who asked that her last name not be used. “No matter what you’re going through, music’s good for your soul.”

Meanwhile, through its Reach Studio program, RedLine invites any artist to visit the studio and access the program’s workspace, storage space and materials.

Reach Studio also provides “professional development and opportunities to sell artwork,” said JC Futrell, RedLine’s education director.

Participants’ work is featured in permanent exhibitions at RedLine and Saint John’s Cathedral at 1350 N. Washington St., Denver, he said.

The studio’s core artists, who have regularly participated for six months, receive additional benefits including access to scholarships for the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design.

“This studio really means connection and it really means safety,” Futrell said. “I’ve got artists who tell me that before coming in here, they didn’t really see themselves as artists, and now they do.”

That’s been the case for Reach Studio coordinator Gonzo, who first came to the studio about a decade ago, hoping to leave behind a life of financial hardship and crime, he said.

“I came into this building trying not to be anybody anymore. The minute I’d leave here, there’d be drugs,

people who were addicted to things,” he said. “We’re always on the verge of being unsettled, but what’s kept me sane is consistency.”

Since joining the studio, he has accepted the coordinator position, sold numerous pieces and found stable housing, he said. He attributes the turnaround to his pursuit of an art career and says that, for many others, he’s seen the same transformation take place.

“I’ve created a whole new person,” he said. “I don’t do the things I used to do, and that’s what makes life

worth living.”

‘It saves your life’ Though many of the artists live within walking distance of the studio, some have a longer commute, coming in from the surrounding suburbs.

“We get artists from Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Englewood, Thornton — they come from all over to be in this space,” Futrell said.

Juannean Young, who left her job about two years ago to become an artist, drives to RedLine every week from Aurora, where she recently moved into a shared-living home.

Young and many of her fellow artists said that through the studio’s sales and connections, they feel they have started to make names for themselves in the art world.

Vanessa Constanti is one artist who’s found this success. In the past, the artist faced housing insecurity; she has since found stable housing, but she continues to visit the studio as she cares for her daughter, who has significant special needs, Constanti said.

In addition to selling artwork and being a part of exhibitions, the program provides something even more important, she said.

“When you’re dealing with special needs or housing insecurity, you’re never self-actualizing. You’re mired in just surviving,” she said. “This is the first time I’ve been able to have an outlet for my art. I think most of us will use the same terms: It saves your life.”

However, when we start sharing sales stories and winning the close ones, we can all feel the energy shift and the excitement building as if we were still in the process. The feeling of winning gives way to the sensation of being in the battle. We celebrate with a “cheers” for what we have accomplished and encourage one another as we prepare for the next opportunity.

Just like a blowout of a game could bring a case of boredom, a lack of competition and competitive spirit draws us closer to complacency and mediocrity. Colorado’s Poet Laureate will speak at Arapahoe Community College on March 4, and he hopes he’s not the only one.

“My work lends itself to conversation,” said Bobby LeFebre, who was named the state’s poetic ambassador in 2019. “A lot of my work is focused on cultural and social issues. I want people to love it and hate it.”

At 37, LeFebre is the state’s youngest-ever poet laureate, and the first person of color to hold the title. He said he hopes to use the position to focus on marginalized voices.

LeFebre believes other young poets of color were qualified to hold the title before him, but weren’t chosen. “That speaks to institutional and structural racism about what poetry means, who it’s for, and how it’s honored and celebrated. I want to lift up the voices who aren’t always heard.”

LeFebre said he’s not coming to ACC with a particular plan.

“It depends how I’m feeling that day or what’s going on in the world. Every poetry set is different. People in the

LeFebre’s goals speak to poetry’s history, said ACC English professor Jamey Trotter, who is hosting the event as part of the Writers Studio program he spearheads with professor Andrea Mason.

“Poetry allows you to criticize conventions of poetry you wouldn’t otherwise,” Trotter said. “Some people see it as an elitist genre, but really it’s among the most accessible and an-

cient forms of writing and speaking.

It begs to be read aloud.”

The reading is a chance for people who don’t typically attend poetry readings to expose themselves to challenging ideas, Trotter said, and maybe write some poetry themselves.

“You can write good poetry,” Trotter said. “It doesn’t have to be the sappy stuff we wrote in high school. Artists and poets can effect change.”

LeFebre is also a good example for

young poets, Trotter said, citing LeFebre’s degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“He comes from a humble background,” Trotter said. “From a teacher’s standpoint, I can say, ‘This can happen to you if you work hard and care enough.’”

LeFebre said the time is right for young people looking to express themselves through poetry.

“There’s a resurgence of interest in poetry,” LeFebre said. “People are experiencing it in new ways. It should always be evolving as we and technology evolve. We relegated poetry to books, but we can find it in songs or old family recipes. It’s creating a connection between things that don’t seem to be connected. Poetry is a worldview. We’ll talk about whatever comes up.”

Area wrestlers post strong showings at state Cherokee Trail picked up a pair of state crowns, Ponderosa third in team standings

Cherokee Trail never had an individual state wrestling champion prior to the state wrestling tournament Feb. 20-22 at the Pepsi Center.

The Cougars wrapped up the Class 5A portion of the meet with two state champions and came close to having three.

Meanwhile, Ponderosa finished third in the team standings behind champion Pomona and second-place Rocky Mountain.

And, Regis Jesuit junior Antonio Segura captured his second state title to highlight the top performances by area wrestlers.

Sophomore Derek Glenn Jr. will go down as Cherokee Trail’s first state champion as he downed Freddie Sanchez of Grandview, 4-2, in the 106-pound championship match. Sam Hart added a second Cougars state title when he won the 220-pound crown with a 4-2 victory over Brighton’s Dylan BravoParker, which wrapped up a 42-0 season for the junior.

Senior Julian Williams had a chance to be the school’s third individual state champion, but he was dealt a 5-2 title confrontation loss to Columbine’s Zach Schrader at 285 pounds in one of the final matches of the state tournament.

Glenn gained revenge over Sanchez for a 3-1 loss in Centennial League dual meet action. He used a thirdperiod takedown and held on for the victory, which gave him a 38-6 record for the season.

He didn’t qualify for the state tournament last season and he said it felt good to beat Sanchez.

“And I feel good to be the school’s first state champion,” he said.

Cherokee Trail had 10 state qualifiers, the most in school history, and Hart credits his teammates for inspiring his undefeated season. The Cougars were fourth in the team standings.

“I’m grateful to all my teammates for making me work hard,” said Hart.

“We are always pushing each other.

It was a great environment and that helped me accomplish this. We always pushed each other. We were one of the hardest working groups of kids in the state.”

Segura faced Legacy’s Joey Joiner once again for the state 145-pound title but instead of a one-point win like he recorded in 2019, he used takedowns to post a 10-7 decision over Joiner to end with a 47-5 record for the season.

He came out aggressive in his finals duel against Joiner and wound up

“This one feels better,” said Segura.

“It was a repeat. I felt confident and ready to go in the match. I wrestled well in the tournament. I had really good matches in the first two rounds.

In the semis I had a bit of a scare (8-7 decision over Adams City’s Joshua Deaguero) but I was ready to go in my finals match. I had a close match last

year (against Joiner) and I felt I was going to put it on him this year and prove last year wasn’t a fluke.

“I was grateful for the opportunity.

I can remember as a little kid watching the state finals and thinking, man, that could be me someday.”

In other significant matches involving wrestlers from south metro area schools, Ponderosa freshman Jacob Bostelman lost his third place match to Thornton’s Chris Moreno when he was pinned in 2:13.

Murphy Menke, a Ponderosa sophomore, defeated Pomona’s Elijah Olguin, 3-2, in the 120-pound thirdplace match and Douglas County junior Max Black finished strong with a 16-6 win over Adams City’s to wind up third in the 126-pound bracket.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Julie Ertz, because she has great leadership skills and she always plays so hard no matter who her opponent is.

What would be a perfect performance in your sport?

Knowing my assignment and playing good defense on the other team’s best player, not allowing them to score a lot of points along with having a lot of rebounds and deflections.

es, there is still a Puchino participating in athletic endeavors at Littleton High school.

Susie Puchino, a multi-sport soccer and basketball athlete who is currently the best player on the Lions basketball team, is the younger sister of Stephanie, Laura and Katie Puchino, who were standouts on Littleton athletic teams.

“Earlier in my years here at Littleton there was more pressure to play as well as they did,” said Susie. “If someone scored so many points in a season, I had to try to top that. As I’ve gotten older, I have realized we’ve all played different positions and types of games so some of the pressure has let off a little bit.”

So this season in basketball, Susie Puchino is the Lions leader and one of the top defenders in the Jeffco 4A league.

“I have a good mindset to play defensively,” said Susie. “Anyone has the potential to be a good defender if they stay low and move their feet well. I have good bursts of energy to keep up with someone for a couple dribbles because they don’t dribble too much more than that. Consistency is important, and as the game moves on, not being tired, staying low and not going up for fakes.”

“The Help.” It’s a historical fiction book in the civil rights era.

Students in Littleton Public Schools who would like to get published are invited to enter the Friends of the Littleton Library and Museum’s 53rd annual creative writing contest.

The contest is open to students in grades 1-12 who attend Littleton Public Schools, or who live in the school district’s boundaries. Entry forms are available at Bemis Library or at https://friendslittleton.org/creativewriting-contest.

Entry categories are: poetry, any length and all forms; short story, 2,500 words maximum, fiction or nonfiction; and other, anime, script, essay, speech.

The deadline to submit entries is 5 p.m. Saturday, March 28. No late entries will be accepted.

Students should staple the entry

form to manuscript and submit at the front desk at Bemis Public Library, 6014 S. Datura St., Littleton, or email it to FriendsCreativeWritingContest@ gmail.com. Manuscripts will not be returned.
