Arapahoe clerk’s office scrambles to send out missing ballots Error meant hundreds of military, overseas presidential primary ballots didn’t make mail deadline

Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder Joan Lopez said on Jan. 31 that her office was scrambling to mail out hundreds of presidential primary ballots after a “data entry error” meant many overseas and military voters never received one.

Military and overseas voters, who can choose either a mail or email ballot, were supposed to receive their ballots for the March 3 presidential primary by Jan. 18, but 985 voters who requested a mail ballot never got one, according to a news release.

Military and overseas voters are known as UOCAVA voters for the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. Lopez said her office became aware of the error on Jan. 29 when they were contacted by UOCAVA email voters who were confused when they received both an email and mail ballot.

Lopez said a staffer inadvertently

mislabeled the UOCAVA ballot lists, inadvertently sending the same list to both the email and mail vendors, meaning the 1,998 UOCAVA voters who requested an email ballot got both, and the mail ballot voters got neither.

Nobody cross-checked the staffer’s work before it was sent to the vendors, Lopez said, saying her office will change its protocols to ensure voter lists are verified before they’re sent out.

Of the affected voters, 381 were unaffiliated, 340 are Democrats and 264 are Republicans.

Lopez About half are military members and their families.

Lopez said upon learning of the error, her staff immediately notified the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, and began working to send out mail ballots.

All the replacement ballots were scheduled to be sent out by the end of Jan. 31, Lopez said.

The error means the office did not meet the Secretary of State’s deadline of 45 days before the election for sending out ballots, Lopez said. The office will now be required to submit a compliance plan and regular status updates to the state for the June primary and November general election.

“Mistakes were made,” Lopez said.

DAVID GILBERT “I certainly don’t want us to make any errors, but it happens. It’s a learning process. I have full confidence in my staff that we’ll look at every error that happens in every election and look over our processes and make sure that we do better each time.”

Lopez previously vowed to improve her office’s election processes in November, after drawing criticism for what many called slow vote counts in the midterm election and a fumbled answer to a reporter’s question about

the fairness of the vote-counting process. Lopez was also criticized by a county ethics board in December for what it called sloppy adherence to county travel reimbursement policies.

Lopez said she has taken steps to improve the office, citing the recent hiring of former Denver Clerk and Recorder candidate Peg Perl as the county’s new elections director.

“She’s been on board about a week,” Lopez said. “Just long enough to get stressed out about this.”

Hockey players and figure skaters will have an ice place to skate next winter, with South Suburban Parks and Recreation District’s new ice rink and recreation complex slated to open in December.

Construction crews recently affixed the final roof beam to the sprawling complex at the southwest corner of County Line Road and South Holly Street. Here are five things to know:

South Suburban’s new recreation complex will feature three sheets of ice, up from two at the old Ice Arena.

Three sheets of ice The complex will replace the South Suburban Ice Arena off Arapahoe Road, which turns 52 this year. The old ice arena features two sheets of ice, which are under increasing demand as hockey and skating programs grow, said South Suburban spokesperson Jamie DeBartolomeis.

Though initial plans for the new complex only included two sheets of ice, the community made it clear that wasn’t enough, DeBartolomeis said, and the new facility will feature three sheets.

Though initial estimates placed the cost of the new complex at $50 million, the project will likely cost $61 million, owing to the addition of the third ice sheet and higher-than-expected construction costs, DeBartolomeis said. The funding comes from a combination of bonds and certificates of participation, according to a fact sheet.

More than a place to skate Though the ice sheets are the centerpiece of the new facility, the complex will also include two indoor synthetic turf fields, and a gymnasium that can be divided into basketball, volleyball or pickleball courts.

The 206,000-square-foot facility will also feature a restaurant and bar, seating for more than 1,000 spectators, party rooms, training rooms and a pro shop. The facility will also be the new home of South Suburban’s administrative offices.

Old arena’s future unknown South Suburban will mothball the old ice arena for the time being, with no plans to sell the facility or the land.

The ground beneath the ice sheets is frozen to an unknown depth, DeBartolomeis said, and could take years to defrost.

The district doesn’t have firm plans yet for the old building.

Initial studies looked at revamping or expanding the old facility, but found that even partial thawing of the permafrost beneath the building could cause foundation upheaval, and the district concluded it was more cost-effective to build a new facility.

The adjacent parking lot will become overflow parking for DeKoevend park.

New site for disc golf The new recreation complex replaced the site of old South Suburban disc golf course, which has been moved to the West Fork Open Space Park, on South Broadway between Plaza Drive and Highlands Ranch Parkway.

The new 18-hole disc golf course will open in May, DeBartolomeis said, and will be operated by Highlands Ranch Metro District, which ponied up for the bulk of the $480,000 project.

And more South Suburban has lots of other irons in the fire, DeBartolomeis said. Three of the district’s four outdoor pools — Harlow, Franklin and Holly — are getting total rebuilds this winter, with plans to open in time for Memorial Day. FAA gives final green light to flight-path changes Metroplex plan to be implemented in March; Centennial Airport to refile legal action

WHAT WOULD METROPLEX CHANGE? Older methods to direct air traffic in the metro area largely depend on navigational aids on the ground or radar by air traffic controllers, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Area navigation, or RNAV, can put pilots on more direct routes, generally through satellite technology. It requires less communication between air traffic control and pilots and makes for more efficient use of airspace, according to the FAA. RNAV changes have been part of NextGen, a set of updates the FAA is making in the Denver area and around the nation.

The Metroplex plan is another part of the NextGen updates. It aims to make further changes with new flight paths for airports in metro areas like Denver.

The potential airports affected are Centennial Airport, Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in the Broomfield area, Denver International Airport, Northern Colorado Regional Airport in Loveland and Greeley-Weld County Airport.

After nearly four years since the federal government put plans in motion to reroute airplane traffic in the Denver metro area, the changes are now slated to be implemented this spring.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s plan to optimize arrival and departure at local airports is called the Denver Metroplex project, and it includes Denver International Airport, Centennial Airport and some others.

An FAA study, called an environmental assessment, looked at impacts the project could have on noise, air quality, wildlife, and historic and cultural resources.

The proposed change in flight paths is expected to have “no significant impacts” on those aspects of the project’s area, including metro Denver and the Greeley area, according to the study.

Now, the FAA has released an official final word — a “Finding of No Significant Impact” and “Record

of Decision” — which enables the agency to move forward with the Metroplex project. The decision was announced Jan. 24.

The finding means the FAA has determined that a further review, called an environmental impact statement, isn’t necessary before the plan is put into action, according to the FAA’s website.

No significant impacts have been found to be expected by any environmental assessment of the 11 active or completed Metroplex projects around the nation, and all projects have been reviewed with EAs, as of December, according to FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer.

While the plan would directly impact only a handful of airports, potential effects could be felt in an area that includes all, or portions of, 31 counties in Colorado — although the FAA’s analysis indicates only a

Smoky Hill teacher played role in ‘SNL’ member’s rise Adrian Holguin coached Bowen Yang in high school improv troupe

Like other kids at Smoky Hill High School’s rigorous International Baccalaureate program, Bowen Yang showed many talents and was expected to attend a prominent university.

And he did, scoring a spot at New York University as a microbiology major, according to the Cherry Creek School District website. But his true professional calling wasn’t in a lab coat — unless, of course, the sketch calls for it.

Yang, who graduated from Smoky Hill in 2008, debuted as one of the new cast members on “Saturday Night Live” in fall 2019. And even in high school, people around him seemed to know where he was headed: He was voted “most likely to be a cast member on Saturday Night Live” by his senior classmates.

One of the proudest onlookers to Yang’s career is Adrian Holguin, a former math department chair at Smoky Hill who started the school’s improv comedy troupe, Spontaneous Combustion, about two decades ago.

“Bowen was always funny, but the ability, in improv, to see the funny in a scene in the moment and find that through the character you’re playing or through the relationships that are happening on stage is something very difficult to do,” said Holguin, 49, who ventured into improv after some college friends in theater got him into performing. Holguin coached Yang in Smoky Hill’s improv troupe.

High schoolers inherently have a limited amount of world experience to draw from, Holguin said, but the fact that Yang excelled as a student and his background as the son of immigrants allowed him to have a wider lens.

His experiences broadened his creative scope even further when his podcast, “Las Culturistas,” began, Holguin said. The program discusses “the hottest pop-culture moments of the day,” according to its webpage.

In that podcast, Holguin saw Yang come into “this idea of starting to embrace being a voice for diverse communities — for the LGBT community — and not only being a voice

but being able to play within that community,” Holguin said. Media coverage has described Yang as one of the first openly gay male “SNL” cast members.

To incorporate that identity into his improv was growth for Yang but also a sign of a moment for comedy in general, Holguin said.

Yang’s hiring at “SNL” hasn’t largely affected the popularity of Smoky Hill’s improv troupe — Spontaneous Combustion is well-known at the school and performs a show in auditorium every month — but it’s “more of a confirmation of the fun we’re doing here,” Holguin said.

He sees more popularity of im-

prov in general among high-school and college students now, compared to when he started the Smoky Hill troupe long ago. There’s even evidence that improv can help reduce anxiety in young people, Holguin noted.

These days, Holguin still has a photo of Yang the former student gave him in 2008.

“He’s always been very gracious about keeping in touch — my wife loves him,” Holguin said.

On the back of the photo, Yang wrote: “Math … and improv have been amazing, and thanks for helping me get that 5 on the AP test. Thanks for being an incredible teacher.”

Bill could lead to fund for teacher pay hikes in Colorado Measure to offer bonuses for educators in struggling schools doesn’t go forward

A union-backed bill that would create a fund that cash-strapped districts could tap for teacher pay raises advanced out of the Colorado Legislature’s Senate Education Committee Jan. 29 on a party-line vote, though not before lawmakers of both parties raised questions.

Republicans on the committee said that by also including hourly workers like bus drivers and school secretaries, the money in the fund would be stretched so thin it wouldn’t do much for teacher pay. And state Sen. Jeff Bridges, a Greenwood Village Democrat, asked whether the bill would inadvertently create incentives for local

communities not to tax themselves.

The bill calls for at least $15 million a year to be set aside from state lands proceeds. Districts with low teacher salaries or hourly wages could apply for those funds to raise pay. Those districts would eventually be responsible for assuming the ongoing costs of the raises. The specific criteria that would be used to determine eligibility is still being discussed.

A few hours later, Democrats on the Senate State, Military, & Veterans Affairs Committee rejected a different teacher pay bill that would have given out bonuses up to $12,000 to highly effective teachers who took jobs in schools with persistent low test scores.

State Affairs is known as a “kill committee,” a place where bills die for largely partisan reasons.

Though the bonus bill had a Democratic co-sponsor, the outcome largely reflected ideological differences over the best way to pay teachers: raising wages across the board or targeting state funds to teachers who are mak-

ing the most difference.

Teachers unions generally oppose bonus pay or performance pay, instead preferring more predictable salary schedules that reward longevity and educational credits. Colorado Education Association President Amie BacaOehlert said the teacher rating system was never designed to be used for merit pay and that teaching is a team activity, in which no one person is responsible for the success or failure of students.

State Sen. Kevin Priola, a Brighton Republican and sponsor of the bonus pay bill, said he had hoped the idea would get a fair hearing.

“If this were to be adopted, I believe it would help, at the margin, those teachers who decide to stay (in challenging schools),” he said. “This will create a ripple effect that will benefit not only the students in the room but the culture of the school.”

The bonus bill would have created a $4 million fund for bonuses for teachers who get top ratings and either

move to or stay in a low-performing school.

“As an instructor, I believe that all students and all schools deserve good teachers who can push them to improve their performance,” said Anne Keke, a teacher at Colorado Early Colleges in Aurora and a member of the African Leadership Group, as she testified in support of the bill.

Katie Martinez of the advocacy group A Plus Colorado pointed to research that has found bonus pay effective in keeping good teachers at high-poverty schools. Bonus pay was a major point of contention in the Denver teachers strike last year, with research showing mixed results and teachers divided. The Aurora school district has also experimented with bonuses or stipends for certain hardto-staff positions.

A third teacher pay bill sponsored

by Republican state Sen. Paul Lundeen, which also calls for bonuses for highly effective teachers, has yet to receive a hearing.

Brauchler’s commitment to service extends beyond his actions and includes the district attorney’s office, the release said. When hiring, he actively seeks qualified applicants with military service. The office supports its prosecutors while they deploy to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and elsewhere, and two of its prosecutors are on active duty, the release said. “As a veteran of the Iraq war, and

as member of the Colorado Army National Guard, I know well the value these women and men bring to any organization, especially one dedicated to upholding our Constitution and seeking justice,� Brauchler said.

Annual count highlights hurdles in climbing out of homelessness

Going to college but still living on the South Platte River. Surviving on the streets for years after a divorce.

Two brothers, nearly 60 years old, still searching for foliage to stay outdoors undetected.

These are among the stories people experiencing homelessness shared with volunteers for the annual Point in Time survey, an effort to count the number of people sleeping outdoors in metro areas around the country.

Each January, volunteers from churches, human services departments, nonprofits and law enforcement spread out across the Denver metro area, and around the nation, to conduct the one-day survey. Last year, the survey found 5,755 people homeless across the Denver metro area.

Housing prices skyrocketed over the past decade in the Denver area, but the cost of a roof overhead isn’t the only factor that pushes people into homelessness. And many of them grew up in the area where they now survive outside.

“I got laid off and divorced, lost my house,” said Billy Welty, 51, who grew up in Englewood. “I ended up on the

Welty has been homeless for 16 years off-and-on. He came to Giving Heart Englewood, a homeless services center, for a Jan. 28 event where volunteers interviewed people for the Point in Time survey. The night before, Welty slept at a bus stop. That day, he’d likely stay on a local greenbelt, he said. Often, he’ll sleep all day and walk around all night

Asked what has kept him homeless for so long, Welty said: “If you really want to know, it’s employment. If you can’t get a job, you can’t get a roof. I had over 100 applications out there in the last few years.”

But getting calls back didn’t matter when his phone stopped working.

Homeless individuals outdoors often must play a game of bouncing from place to place, hoping law enforcement doesn’t uproot them.

“If you go to the Platte (River), Denver cops will run you out. If you’re in Littleton, police will (move you). Englewood sends you to Littleton, Denver sends you to Littleton or Englewood, or vice-versa,” Welty said.

One familiar face on the river is D.J. Morrison, a 41-year-old who has attended Metropolitan State University of Denver for the past few years with the help a student loan and financial aid. He weathered 2 1/2 years on a housing waiting list through Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, and his number finally came up, he said. He’s hoping to be housed soon.

People experiencing homelessness often hang around the Auraria college campus’s Tivoli building and library, a trend that has increased since fall 2018, Morrison said. A free meal service operates at the campus each day, he added.

Near the time that a Denver County judge ruled in December 2019 that Denver’s urban camping ban is unconstitutional based on protections against cruel and unusual punishment, Morrison said more people appeared to move to the Platte.

“I’ve seen tents just pop up out of nowhere on the river, next to the light rail (and) in vacant lots” around that time, Morrison said.

Denver police announced they would no longer enforce the city’s urban camping ban after the ruling, but they resumed enforcement in January pending an appeal of the case.

Morrison finds enough resources to survive in the metro area, but he said transportation — specifically bus passes — is a top need for homeless people in the area.

Each January, volunteers from churches, human-services departments, nonprofits and law enforcement join forces in communities across the Denver metro area, and areas around the nation, to conduct the Point in Time survey of their region’s homeless population.

The count includes people who stay overnight in a place not ordinarily used for sleeping, such as a car, park, abandoned building or bus station. The count also includes people who are living in shelters, transitional housing, and hotels and motels paid for by a government or charitable organization.

The results from this year’s survey are months away, but here’s a breakdown of the 2019 numbers: • The PIT survey by the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative counted 5,755 homeless people on Jan. 28, 2019, in the sevencounty metro area.

• That’s an uptick from 5,317 people on Jan. 29, 2018, but because of limitations in the one-night survey, trends are difficult to identify.

• The area includes Denver, Arapahoe, Jefferson, Adams, Douglas, Broomfield and Boulder counties. About 69% stayed in Denver, 11% in Boulder, about 8% in both Adams and Jefferson, and 4% — or 228 individuals — in Arapahoe County.

• The total included 627 veterans.

• Of the survey’s total, 542 people said they were fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault or stalking.

• Of the total, 1,706 said they had a substance abuse issue, 95 were living with HIV or AIDS and 1,947 indicated a mental health issue.

• About 29% of all homeless individuals stayed in transitional housing, while about 54% were in emergency shelter and 0.6% were in supportive housing for mental illness, also called “safe havens.” About 16%, or 946 people, were unsheltered.

• Those who identify as black or AfricanAmerican are overrepresented in homelessness at (21.2%) compared to those in the general metro Denver population (5.1%). Native Americans are also overrepresented, making up just 0.5% of the regional population overall but 6% of those experiencing homelessness.

• The count did not include people sleeping at friends’ or families’ homes.

They avoid the Platte River — calling it too cold, crowded and dangerous — instead dwelling in foliage and bushes and trying “not to get busted,” Timothy Trevithick said.

He ended up homeless about two years ago after losing a job, and his brother has been homeless for decades, owing to problems with his father that began in his childhood, Thomas Trevithick said.

Affordable housing is the main challenge for them.

“That’s No. 1,” Timothy Trevithick said. “It’s hard enough to do anything without eating right and sleep and getting your prescriptions.”

The Point in Time survey doesn’t catch everyone experiencing homelessness.

At GraceFull Cafe, a pay-what-you-can restaurant in Littleton that caters to everyone, including the area’s burgeoning population without homes, Frances Radford and Rick Kible said though they often sleep outdoors as they struggle to find housing, they hadn’t encountered any volunteers with surveys, who left the cafe hours before Radford and Kible showed up for lunch. Depending on the night, they might not even fit the survey’s definition of homeless.

“Sometimes we stay with a guy we know, but he’s pretty unstable, and some nights he won’t let us come by,” said Kible, 61. “Those nights we usually find a spot under a tree.”

Radford said she’d been homeless for about a year, after an apartment manager told her she had to stop allowing friends to move into her place, or hand over the keys.

“I’m stubborn,” said Radford, 81. “I handed over my keys. I wasn’t about to kick out my friends.”

Kible said he’s been homeless many times over the past 16 years. Struggling with alcoholism, Kible said he can manage to hold down a place while he’s sober, but relapses have cost him homes and friends.

Both said they’re grateful for GraceFull Cafe, where they can eat a healthy meal in peace and comfort without judgment.

GraceFull Cafe’s owner, Heather Greenwood, said the survey is just one data point toward addressing a large and nebulous issue.

“Quantitative data is a piece of the puzzle, but you can’t measure the qualitative portion,” Greenwood said. “Nobody is measuring what impact you can have by smiling and saying hello to someone on hard times. I think before we can talk solutions, we have to have empathy.”

Centennial sees little to no involvement in survey

Englewood and Sheridan saw their share of events that were held to draw in homeless individuals to take the Point in Time survey — and some surveys were administered in Littleton — but Centennial was not covered.

A worker with the Point in Time effort in the south metro area said there were no outreach walks to give the survey in Centennial and that the nearest of the “magnet” events — which provide resources such as hot meals, hygiene items and health care services to attract people for the survey — took place at Giving Heart homeless-services center in Englewood.

Law enforcement is often involved in carrying out the Point in Time count, but a captain with the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office doesn’t think the sheriff ’s office has ever participated in the survey effort, according to Ginger Delgado, spokeswoman for the office.

City spokeswoman Allison Wittern said she was not aware of anything happening in Centennial regarding the survey.

Diane Howald, a regional Point in Time coordinator, said she’s not aware of any service centers in Centennial that cater to homeless individuals. That’s part of the reason for the lack of coverage there — apart from the magnet events, survey volunteers

showed up to day shelters, food providers and other resource centers for the count.

Generally, shelters aren’t located in Arapahoe County, Howald said, aside from shelter facilities specifically for women and their children, or shelter space in churches during severe weather.

It’s possible surveyors included Centennial before this year but didn’t get any surveytakers and decided not to come back, said Howald, who is a community engagement manager with the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, the organization that oversees the survey in the Denver region.

A worker with the south metro Point in Time effort was not aware of any outreach walks, surveys given at service providers or magnet events in Centennial in previous years.

Hundreds of volunteers and service providers’ staff carry out the survey, Howald said. But the effort still has scarce resources and must plan accordingly — it has to cover Arapahoe, Adams, Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, Boulder and Broomfield counties.

The Centennial City Council in July banned homeless camping on city-owned property, including city-owned roads, trails and parks, as well as creeks, streams, and other water drainage areas. Centennial had not seen large homeless encampments as of that time, but some small camps caught authorities’ attention in 2019.

Q&A with former councilmember Carrie Penaloza District 2 member caps off four years representing western portion of city

Carrie Penaloza has lived in Centennial for 15 years and has said her family initially moved to Centennial because of its neighborhoods and schools.

In turn, she ended up becoming a fixture in the community, too, and she ended her four-year tenure on the Centennial City Council last month.

The attorney and municipal prosecutor was the city councilmember for District 2, which includes the part of the Centennial north of East Dry

Creek Road and mostly west of South Quebec Street. It excludes the farthest west part of town.

While on council, Penaloza also served on the city’s budget and audit committees, the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority board, and the National League of Cities’ Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee.

She also served on the committee for CentenPenaloza nial NEXT — that’s the city’s comprehensive plan, a document that lays out a vision for how a city should develop. In 2019, Penaloza held the position of mayor pro tem, the city councilmember who serves as mayor when the mayor is unable.

Here are her reflections on her tenure.

Even before I got elected, I felt passionate about making the city more walkable. The city’s annual budget for sidewalks was $75,000 in 2016, and we’ve now dedicated more than $1 million in 2020 to sidewalk projects. I will be thrilled when the sidewalk project on the south side of Orchard Road is completed in 2020.

What was your most challenging moment on council?

On a number of occasions, I was the only “no” vote on an issue. I aimed to be a team player and respectful to my fellow councilmembers, but I also knew I had to vote my conscience and always consider the viewpoints of the residents I represented.

What do you think is the biggest upcoming challenge for council?

Managing the tension between the changes that are necessary to keep Centennial thriving in the future with residents’ desire to keep the character of Centennial they love and chose to move here to experience.

Specifically, the issue of increased residential density. And I can’t leave out always keeping an eye on the budget.

What would you like to say to your constituents?

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you for the last four years. It was a true honor.

A perfect place for those who love cats and toes

rnest Hemingway kept six-toed cats at his home, now a museum, in Key West, Florida.

They’re QUIET called “polydactyl cats.”

DESPERATION The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum currently has 40-50 polydactyl cats roaming around.

Cats normally have five front toes and four back toes.

Six-toed cats were often taken on ships for two reasons: They Craig Marshall were good at ridding Smith rodents, and they were thought to be lucky.

Hemingway was given his first polydactyl cat, named Snow White, by a ship captain.

In general, people are thought to prefer dogs or cats, not both.

I prefer dogs, and I prefer a specific breed. I am on my fourth (and final) Dachshund.

I don’t hold much with folklore, as fascinating as it is. I doubt if Hexe, Badger, Smitty or Harry have brought me greater luck than the fortune of knowing them.

Harry has allergies. Determining what they were was expensive.

Bloodwork was done and sent to a laboratory in Mesa, Arizona. The results came back in a book that looked like the one Ralph Edwards used to read from on “This Is Your Life.”

There were pages of possible allergies with checked and unchecked boxes next to them.

The main culprit, we determined, was oats.

But there were others: rap music,

It is estimated to cost trillions of dollars and would harm our economy and national security. Electricity prices would skyrocket.

Let’s not listen to fearmongers but rather be innovative and practical in our approach to our climate.

When intent is more important than technique

H

ave you ever heard a really bad joke? Or maybe just a very funny joke told really poorly? We can probably all WINNING say yes to that one, WORDS couldn’t we? We have also probably been told a story that missed its desired mark or that was shared in such a way that we didn’t quite make the connection.

But sometimes we just have to put Michael Norton things in the right context. What if the intent of the joke or story being told, regardless of how poorly it was told, was to lift the spirits of someone who was feeling down or needed encouragement?

When we think of it in those terms, maybe we can start to see where intent could be equal to or even more important than technique.

Now you might be thinking, is that kind of like, “It’s the thought that counts”? Yes, I am sure that

it is in some way. However, is it always true? Some may argue that it cannot always be true. Again, let’s put perspective and context ahead of judgment for a moment. Let’s pretend that it is always 100% true, assuming of course that we are all in agreement that we are discussing the intention of a positive nature, not malintent. Then again, we are talking about our readers and community here, so we know that the readership here is always operating with positive intentions.

“Put your heart into it.” “How about we try that again, this time with feeling.” We have heard and know these sayings and others all too well. When used as a weapon or spoken with harsh words and tonality of sarcasm, they are demoralizing and demotivating. But, when used properly and spoken with love and hope, they evoke heartfelt feelings of encouragement and inspired motivation.

would be if we focused on our intent as much as we focused on our techniques, processes, and skills? I am not talking about just our personal lives and relationships; I am also including our work environment and relationships. By acting with the very best of intentions, each and every one of our experiences and relationships could be altered for the better. Good intentions foster trust, and trust is better than good at work and at home.

Even when we falter or stumble in our attempts, even when someone may feel initially hurt, angry, or upset because of our best of intentions plans, words and actions, when the positive intention is ultimately recognized, understanding and appreciation will almost always win the day.

Here’s the other thing, a positive attitude and intention go handin-hand. It would be hard to have a negative attitude and a positive intention at the same time. A positive attitude is very important, and sometimes we can have a positive attitude without taking any action.

Comedy shows adjust to outlying audiences

hen local comedian Michael Jeffries stepped up to the mic at Max Taps Brewery in Highlands Ranch, the room was filled with a variety of suburbanites.

Folks just getting off work, couples young and old, friend groups and beer lovers filed into the seats in the back room of the brewery on Jan. 25. Minutes before, the room was occupied by a crowd from a funeral reception.

Jeffries, 29, who produces and hosts the show, opened with a joke apologizing for his appearance.

“I made the mistake of sleeping on my hair last night,” he said. “I know I should start sleeping on a mattress instead, but mattresses are expensive and the hair is free if you don’t ask any stupid (expletive) questions.”

When Jeffries first started the suburban showcase, he was asked to only book comics who will remain clean and non-political. The crowds in the suburbs tend to skew older and more conservative, after all.

The problem, he said, is that leaves

almost no one to perform. So, he asked the owner to trust him and after one show, he was given full authority to just book the funniest people possible.

“Just because you live in the suburbs doesn’t mean you don’t like to laugh,” Jeffries said. “Even if the joke is dirty … or even against your political beliefs.”

Jeffries is just one of the Denverbased comedians capitalizing on the fact that while everyone enjoys laughing, not everyone wants to sit in an hour of traffic to do it.

A world away While solid comedy is generally successful everywhere, there are some big differences between the suburban and

urban comedy scenes. Those distinctions just might be the reason downtown’s shows are experiencing huge growth and the outskirts are seeing a slower uptick.

For starters, the suburbs are much more spread out, meaning ride-sharing services can get expensive quickly, said Wende Curtis, owner of Comedy Works, which has locations in downtown Denver and Greenwood Village.

Curtis opened up Comedy Works’ suburban club in 2008 after market research showed that’s where the bulk of people are moving, she said.

“It’s 13 1/2 miles from the original location downtown … but it’s a world away,” she said.

laugh at the not-so-clean jokes, producers still tend to book people who lean away from dirtier humor in their sets.

“My philosophy is on a Saturday night if I’ve got tickets available and people can walk in and buy a ticket, I want to appeal to (our audience),” Curtis said. “Chances are you might get somebody a little edgier walking in downtown and you’re going to get somebody a little cleaner if you go south.”

Another factor challenging the comedy scene in the suburbs is the demographics. Josue Flores, a Denverbased comedy producer, describes his target ticket buyer as between the ages of 21 and 34. In the city center, there’s a higher density of this group. A few miles from downtown, the crowds tend to skew a little older, more conservative and less diverse, Flores said.

That’s why the suburbs tend to be a place where local comics can really put their jokes to the test said Korey David, a local comedian and producer.

“The suburban rooms are where you find out what your material actually is,” David said. “It’s easy to pander to audiences in the urban area because everyone agrees with you.”

start safe at the suburban shows, he said. That’s because many people in these areas have never seen a show like this.

“You’re just dealing with different types of people who are going to find different types of comedy funny,” he said. “Once you start getting repeat customers, then you can take more risks.”

David also hosts a regular show in Arvada called Hootenanny, which combines live music and comedy.

“A lot of times people think it will be rough (in the suburbs) but it’s actually quite the opposite,” he said.

In Parker, stand-up comedian Rion Evans and improv comedian Grant Garrison are also both working to distinguish the small town as a strong place for comedy.

“I want to turn Parker into the city that’s known for having the best comedy scene in Colorado,” Garrison said. “I don’t want to commute for my comedy.”

Build it and they will come While the audiences tend to be extra appreciative of these live shows close to home, they can also be pickier.

“When you’re older, you’re more selective,” Curtis said. “You just want to see who you want to see.”

“I wouldn’t say that any places in (suburban Denver) have their own distinct scene,” he said, “Most of the time a comedy scene needs a few venues that are willing to regularly host not only shows but open mics allowing new comics to try things out.”

As Denver and its comedy scene continue to grow, spaces like the ones Garcia described will continue to pop up, Curtis said. But will the same happen in the suburbs?

“I think the more urban (shows) are going to have a better success rate than the suburban ones, but you know, eventually something’s going to stick,” Curtis said. “Build it and they will come and if it’s strong enough … they’re going to come back.”

“We feel the FAA essentially based (its final decision) on the (environmental assessment) and ignored the comments from Centennial Airport and others,” Olislagers said.

Tim Kathka and Bill Knoll, both members of the active Littleton Fine Arts Guild (and both Nebraska natives), will exhibit their photographs in the gallery at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch from Feb. 7 through March 12. The pair will hold a reception from 10:30 to noon, between services, on Feb. 9 so they can talk about their special shots with art lovers.

Guild member Kathy Meyers is active with the Art at St. Andrew program and invited them to exhibit their images.

Kathka, a retired architect who especially worked on churches, and Knoll, a retired electrical engineer, share a special interest in the night sky and Milky Way, but both are interested in other aspects of nature as well — birds, animals, wildflowers, mountains, lakes, rivers and what else occurs in the world around them.

Knoll is also an accomplished woodworker and will bring some of that art as well to display in glass cases …

likes to work with “rescued wood.” If he sees a tree being cut down, he stops to ask for wood. What about drying it, we wonder. Green wood is easier to carve, so he forms a piece and then lets it dry, weighing it to track on drying. Fine finishing follows. If it has a knothole or cracks, he has a food-safe liquid product that can repair it and he is careful that finishes are also food-safe.

Kathka first learned about manual shooting from a couple of Navy buddies, he said and these artists both talked about how today one can “just shoot and look at the computer to see if it works well.” Post processing is a whole different story, they agreed,

talking of subscriptions to Photoshop (Knoll has used it for 30 years) and other products one can subscribe to.

They recommend wide-angle lenses.

Knoll also has a longer lens that allows him to merge three shots to create panoramic prints — which he’ll include in the exhibit.

“I’m back to an old film camera for that,” Knoll commented. But he can use the lens on his newest camera as well.

They share satisfaction that grandchildren are being taught to do manual shooting in school classes.

Teachers realize the importance of understanding how it all works.

eras and agree that they “make what you’re doing better …” And to shoot the Milky Way, you want as little light as possible. You look for something interesting for the foreground — e.g., a small lake, a pond …

Happy accidents happen too. Kathka spoke of being set up for a night shot at Echo Lake, after time shooting on Mount Evans, when a car appeared, sweeping lights across the lake. “It lit the foreground nicely,” he said. They also speak of “the blue hour” before sunrise.

They attended a Len Randall class in Rocky Mountain National Park, where they were all too aware of light pollution from Denver. Another lesson learned that night: Kathka fell and Knoll, a first responder, was able to give him some needed care. “I don’t need to be out by myself, alone!”

Beside the highway, a Persian oasis Ladan’s serves up the cooking of Iran from a tent restaurant just off Santa Fe Drive

On a frontage road beside Santa Fe Drive, nestled among auto body shops, inside a small canopy tent, amid sumptuous furnishings and tables topped with backgammon boards, Ladan Azizi and her friends turn out Persian delicacies.

“We’re all family, and we want you to feel like you’re coming home for dinner,” said Azizi, who opened Ladan’s, a Persian restaurant, around New Year’s.

The Ladan’s menu features intricately spiced lamb kabobs, fromscratch falafel, fluffy saffron rice, homemade hummus topped with fresh pomegranate, tart cucumber sauce, rich baklava and hot tea sprinkled with fresh-ground cardamom. Entrees run from $9 to $13.

“We only have a few menu items, but they’re the best you’re going to find,” said owner Frey Asgari.

Ladan’s is located at 4435 S. Santa Fe Drive, accessible via a frontage road running between Oxford Avenue and Union Avenue along the west side of the highway.

Ladan’s, a Persian restaurant, operates out of a tent beside South Santa Fe Drive.

The unlikely spot for a restaurant — with the kitchen housed in a trailer attached to the tent — isn’t a concern for Asgari, who owns the used car dealership next door.

“There are a few Persian restaurants in the Denver area, but nothing of this caliber,” Asgari said. “We’ve already got people coming to see us from other cities.”

On a brisk January afternoon, old friends came and went from Ladan’s, exchanging hugs, air kisses and greet-

ings in Farsi, the language of Iran. At a nearby table sat a young man from Brighton who was in the area for a car part but decided to try Persian food for the first time.

Asgari said he came to America in the mid-1970s, and the country has been good to him.

“I thank God and this country that gave me the opportunity to be here, and to have a place for my friends,” Asgari said.

Ladan’s “doesn’t have an atmo-

sphere like Shanahan’s,” the upscale steakhouse, Asgari said, but it’s a comfortable, inviting place.

Elnaz Azizi, Ladan’s younger sister who moved from Iran two years ago, said she’s thankful for the restaurant while she establishes herself in America.

“I’m so glad I’m here,” said Elnaz, who studies English at Emily Griffith Technical College. “College is so expensive in Iran. Someday I hope to go to university to become an architect or a lawyer.”

In the meantime, the group of friends and family is focusing on the food of their homeland. Ladan’s also does catering, Asgari said, and is signed up for deliveries through DoorDash and GrubHub. With the sounds of the highway outside drowned out by Farsi folks songs on the stereo, the air rich with the aroma of spices, Asgari finished a plate of lamb stew over rice and stood to head next door to the car lot.

“You’ve got to appreciate what you have,” Asgari said. “You’ve got to cherish it.”

She saw Kathka’s night photography and wanted one to start replacing lost works. She also told him of her work with LOVE Inc. in Littleton, which was very involved in helping fire victims with their varied needs. Kathka donated a photo for the fall fundraiser and made some cards as well. Knoll donated wooden bowls. Both are members of the organization.

“Between us, we’ll have close to 90 works,” they say.

Swimmer isn’t about self Anna Wetzel has happy memories of Olympian

S

wimming is often considered an individual sport, but Arapahoe senior captain Anna Wetzel feels differently.

Wetzel holds one individual Centennial League and school record and is a member of two record Warriors relay foursomes, but she never forgets about the team.

“Swimming is like an individual sport but it is really not,” said Wetzel.

“It’s more for me. I swim for everyone. It is difficult for some of the girls to understand, especially some of the club swimmers.

“They have built it into their brains that ‘I am swimming for me and I need this time.’ It’s not that my team needs me to win so that we can win the meet.’

“I really started to notice when I started high school that it became prevalent that club is more individualized,” she continued. “For me personally I swim a lot faster when I know that I’m doing it for my team rather than for myself.”

Q&A with Wetzel Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Missy Franklin because she swam at Regis and lived in the neighborhood next to mine. In the summer she would practice at the pool where I practiced and I looked up to her because she was so kind.

She always said hi to us even though we weren’t supposed to talk to her because she was an Olympian and had to focus on her training.

What or who motivates you most to excel in sports?

My team. I know they

will always be there for me no matter what happens, What are your plans after high school?

I am going to swim at the University of Hawaii and plan to study kinesiology.

I can’t imagine me not doing something involved with sports. I want to be able to help people, especially athletes.

What habits to you have before a race?

I normally slap my legs before a race to get kind of warmed up and then I will shake my arms. And

when they say step on the blocks, I clap my hands twice. I feel like if I don’t clap I’m not ready for the race.

What is your favorite food?

My grandmother is from Italy and my mom makes her pasta sauce and I love it.

What is important for a good time in the 100 breaststroke?

Making sure you are pulling a lot of water and you need to make sure you are really powerful and going as fast as you possibly can.

irst of all, I admit that I’m a little old school.

I generally like and prefer the way things used to be handled.

Which brings me to the first Esports League of Legends state championship for the pilot sport, which was held Jan. 25.

I’m having a hard time welcoming esports into the Colorado High School OVERTIME Activities Association.

Esports, or electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games.

It is a controversial point for debate whether Jim Benton esports is a sport. It is gaining popularity, and most of the world considers electronic sports to be a sport because of the planning, timing and execution required.

CHSAA wanted to bring the competition into the schools and have a big-time championship, which I applaud, but it is still not a physical sport and it will take a while for esports to attract interest from me.

Ryan Casey, the CHSAA director of digital media, called the first esports championship amazing and labeled esports as a good pilot program.

Casey wrote about the first championship, which was won

by Cherry Creek with a 2-0 win over Gateway. Highlands Ranch and Bear Creek were the other two semifinal teams among the 56 teams that were in the first pilot program season.

Reading Casey’s story was like reading Greek to me, with plenty of words I did not understand — like towers, eliminations and dragons.

Don’t ask what any of the terms mean. This is all new to me.

According to Casey, Vlad Dolzhenko dealt 56,327 damage, had a 13-4 kill/death ratio and 28 assists to lead the Bruins in the finals.

Casey also pointed out that Gateway’s Leonid Chyzhykov had what apparently is an outstanding KDA line of 18/2/11 against Bear Creek in the semis.

Higgins also had 15 rebounds in the game.

Julian Hammond III and Myles Purchase each had 20 points to help Cherry Creek’s boys basketball team, ranked No. 7, toppled second-ranked Smoky Hill, 76-65, on Jan. 29.

Valor Christian sophomore Raegan Beers had a double double of 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-41 girls basketball conquest for the secondranked Eagles over No. 5 Ralston Valley on Jan. 29.
