Car theft suspect shot by deputy near east Centennial Deputies shot one suspect, arrested others, near Parker and Arapahoe roads

A sheriff ’s deputy shot a car-theft suspect in an incident that saw two reportedly stolen vehicles, three other suspects under arrest and one suspect who fled the scene and was later located, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office.

A deputy approached the driver of what appeared to be a stalled truck near South Parker Road and East Fremont Avenue in the east Centennial area at about 3:20 p.m. Jan. 22, according to a sheriff ’s office news release.

Because the truck had been reported stolen from Denver, one suspect at

the scene was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and unrelated warrants, and another also was arrested for unrelated warrants, the release said.

At the time, deputies were told that a second stolen truck would arrive in the area, the release said. It pulled into a parking space at 16363 E. Fremont Ave., an apartment complex south of the Cornerstar shopping development.

Deputies blocked the truck in and tried to detain three people in it, but the truck began ramming nearby cars as deputies approached, the release said. When a deputy became pinned between the truck and a car, another deputy fired shots at the driver, hitting him multiple times. Deputies took him and a female passenger into custody, and a third, male suspect fled the scene.

The injured deputy was treated at an area hospital and released, and the suspect who was shot was taken to an

area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.

A reverse 911 call went out after 8 p.m. warning residents to shelter in place during a search for the suspect who fled, according to the sheriff ’s office.

Deputies suspended the search for the suspect, and lifted the shelterin-place status, as of 10:14 p.m. Jan. 22, according to the sheriff ’s office on Twitter. Authorities believed the suspect was no longer in the area, according to the office.

That suspect was later located, spoke to deputies and is not facing criminal charges, according to Ginger Delgado, sheriff ’s office spokeswoman.

The sheriff ’s office initially tweeted that when deputies confronted the three, the suspects fired and deputies shot back, hitting one suspect. In a later tweet, the office said suspects did not shoot at deputies. Delgado con-

firmed that the suspects did not shoot and that the first tweet was misinformation.

The female passenger who was taken into custody is being held on unrelated warrants, and further charges were being evaluated, the release said.

The deputy who shot the driver has been placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure for the sheriff ’s office regarding officerinvolved shootings, the release said.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the use of force by the deputy and present its findings to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, according to the release. The district includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

Republicans to appoint successor to Rep. Beckman in February Susan Beckman resigned from state House to join Health and Human Services

A Republican Party vacancy committee will appoint a successor to state Rep. Susan Beckman, of Littleton, in early February, but no candidates had officially thrown their hat in the ring as of Jan. 22.

Beckman, who represented House District 38, stepped Beckman down on Jan. 17 to take a job as the Secretary’s

Representative for Region VIII of the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a news release.

“It has been an honor to serve the people of House District 38, and I am looking forward to continuing my public service in my new position,” Beckman said in the release.

Beckman previously worked as an office director for the state Department of Human Services, according to the news release, and has spent much of her career in public policy focused on related issues.

Beckman was elected to the state HD 38 seat in 2016 and reelected in 2018. The district includes most of Littleton, Bow Mar, western Centennial and Columbine Valley.

Beckman served on the Board of Arapahoe County Commissioners from 2001-13. From 1999-2001, she

was a member of Littleton City Council.

A vacancy committee consisting of leaders of the district’s 66 precincts will appoint a replacement for Beckman in early February, said Marty Bolt, the chairman of the HD38 vacancy committee.

Nobody had yet come forward to vie for the seat as of Jan. 22, but Bolt said he expected candidates to emerge soon.

“This isn’t a normal campaign, which can be very grueling,” Bolt said. “It’s a fast-track to the Legislature. I’m sure it will be very attractive.”

Once the successor is appointed, only a few months will remain until the seat is up for grabs again in the November election.

Beckman’s campaign had already raised $12,708 in her bid for a third

term in the House. A pair of Democratic candidates, however, have raised a combined $41,000.

HD 38 was one of the area’s most competitive districts in 2018, with Beckman defeating Democrat Chris Kolker 50.4% to 49.6% — a difference of just 374 votes.

One of the Democratic candidates for the seat, David Ortiz, characterized Beckman’s departure as a sign the seat is ripe to be flipped from Republican to Democrat.

Dorothy Gotlieb, the chairperson of the Arapahoe County Republican Party, said she holds high hopes for Beckman in her new roll.

“Rep. Beckman has given great service in representing HD38,” Gotlieb said in a text, saying Beckman’s new role “is a significant honor and major recognition of Rep. Beckman’s skills, experience and leadership.”

Bill aims to repeal Colorado death penalty After Dems’ failed attempts in prior years, two key GOP votes may change outcome

After years of coming up short, advocates of repealing the death penalty may finally cross the finish line this year with newfound support from two Republican senators.

“From a philosophical perspective, I now don’t think the state should have power over life and death,” said state Sen. Jack Tate, a Centennial Republican who was undecided on the issue last year.

Tate and Colorado Springs state Sen. Owen Hill, a Republican who also has voiced support for a repeal this year, may be enough to give Democrats the edge. The state Legislature has recently seen repeated attempts to overturn the death penalty: It failed in 2013, 2017 and 2019, despite Democrats controlling both the state House and Senate last year.

Democrats haven’t been united on the issue. Two of the three people on death row in Colorado — Sir Mario Owens and Robert Ray — were sentenced to die in connection with the 2005 murder of the son of state Sen. Rhonda Fields, an Aurora Democrat.

Her son was a witness in another murder case involving Owens.

The experience places Fields firmly in opposition to repealing the death penalty, and last year, at least a few other Democrats hadn’t publicly committed to the repeal.

In the state House, Rep. Tom Sullivan, whose son was killed in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting, argues there are certain cases where capital punishment is warranted.

“There’s no question in my mind that the man that murdered my son and 11 others — 58 others shot, traumatized an entire community — there’s no question in my mind that he should be put to death,” said Sullivan, a Democrat from Centennial.

The jury in theater shooter James Holmes’ case did not unanimously agree on the death penalty, so Holmes was not sentenced to death.

‘Irreversible mistakes’ Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler argues that the death penalty is a useful negotiation tool, pointing to the case of Chris Watts, a Frederick man who pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty after killing his wife and daughters in 2018.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado calls the death penalty “an expensive, ineffective, and unjust government program that risks making irreversible mistakes by executing innocent people, delays justice for victims’ families, and wastes millions

of dollars that could be better used on programs that actually save lives and increase public safety,” its website says.

At least 166 people have been exonerated from death rows across the country, an ACLU ColoTate rado fact sheet says.

The organization also argues that in Colorado, racial minorities are disproportionately likely to face the death penalty.

Sullivan, whose House Sullivan district includes east and central Centennial, Foxfield, and nearby areas, said he may be willing to tackle some aspects of the death penalty, such as the uncertainty in whether it deters crime and that it is pursued more often in wealthier judicial districts.

“But in an instance that I was personally involved in and I see more people personally involved with, as I’ve said, I’m not going to be the one to tell those other families that they’re not going to be able to pursue the justice they want,” Sullivan said.

Along with Owens and Ray, the only other inmate on death row in Colorado is Nathan Dunlap, convicted of murdering four people in 1993 shooting at an Aurora Chuck E. Cheese.

All three are black men who attended Overland High School in Aurora at different times.

Fields, whose Senate district sits near Overland, said race is a coincidence in those cases.

“I think they just happened to be black,” Fields said. Dunlap “is black, but he killed (people) that should be alive today.”

“I don’t think it’s about color — I think it’s about murder,” Fields added.

Brauchler, whose judicial district includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, said there recently have been Colorado death row inmates of other races and some death penalty sentences were overturned by a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court decision in a case called Ring v. Arizona, which affected how states apply the death penalty.

On the issue of whether the death penalty deters criminals, the National Research Council reviewed research and found no credible evidence that the death penalty deters crime any more than long prison sentences, ACLU Colorado cites. Economists discuss ways to ‘keep Colorado competitive’ Annual forum claims south metro economy is poised for another strong year

The economy of Denver’s south metro area will look a lot like last year’s, experts say, and the speed bumps to the region’s growth remain present as ever.

Colorado continues to be a national model of economic growth. The state is a leader in tech jobs and workforce education, yet it slipped nationally, from fourth to ninth in one year, in a Forbes ranking for the best places to do business. Sustaining that growth will require a look at the state’s funding sources and local policies, local economists say.

“The risks to Colorado’s economy are, frankly, not economic risks,” said JJ Ament, CEO of the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation.

“The risk to Colorado’s economy in 2020 is politics and policy … We can’t let complacency develop of having it so good for so long that we don’t pay attention both at the Capitol in Denver and Washington.”

The South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce held its annual Economic Forecast Breakfast Jan. 24 at CU South Denver in Lone Tree, a meeting of local economists, politicians and business leaders to discuss the state of the local economy.

Ament said the 2020 economy will look similar last year’s economy. The same problems in the region remain, namely the state’s local politics and policies, Ament said. Ament said the minimum wage increase, which went into effect this year, was one example of a policy that could end up hurting more than it helps.

“Everything I told you last year about Colorado’s economic forecast for 2019 is the same for 2020,” Ament said. “In almost every respect it’s the same. It’s going to be great. Colorado is riding a fantastic economic wave.”

“I’m not going to focus on the economic forecast,” Ament continued, “because everything is going to hold true for this year, we think.”

Instead, Ament focused on how to stoke Colorado’s competitiveness with states such as California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Georgia, Utah and Texas—states that Colorado is in constant competition with, Ament

Utah, for example, spends double on roads what Colorado does, a factor that could affect Colorado’s economy in the long run, Ament said.

“For the first time in six years, on I-70, my wife and I turned around Friday afternoon and drove back instead of finishing the route,” Ament said.

“Don’t think for a second that Utah isn’t explaining that to every single person they meet. It’s not just the mountain traffic, it’s everything else.”

Ament added that Utah grows faster than Colorado in job growth. Supporting that claim was a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study released last year showing Utah was the No.1 state in the country, at a rate of 3.7%. As of 2018, Colorado’s rate hovered around 1.8% The presentation and panel discussion centered around “keeping Colorado competitive.” Ament said Colorado is slipping in some categories that could hurt its job growth in the long run, specifically the state’s trouble with transportation funding.

“The systems that we have that support our economy, support people’s lives and make Colorado great have a connection to what the future will be like,” said Henry Sobanet, chief financial officer of Colorado State University. Sobanet’s presentation suggested the systems that brought Colorado to this point may not bring the state to the same level of vibrancy in the future.

Colorado ranks second in the nation (behind Massachusetts) in workforce education level, Ament said.

“There’s very good evidence that an advanced education will make your life better if you measure it by how much money you make,” Sobanet said, citing a statistic from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Therefore, it translates into better tax revenue and the vibrancy we have in Colorado.”

Sobanet said to remain competitive, the state needs to invest in its public transportation system. Sobanet referred to the incremental revenue growth seen from fuel taxes — from $4.5 million in 2003 to about $6 million in 2019 — compared to the 43% rise in prices in that time. Sobanet presented a diagram illustrating how Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights clashes with the state’s requirement for increasing public school funding (Amendment 23) and limits to property tax growth (the Gallagher Amendment), forcing the state to foot high education bills, which detracts from funding for public roads.

No one suggested TABOR should be repealed or modified, but both Ament and Sobanet suggested the state needs to find better sources of funding for transportation. Voters last year turned down Proposition CC, which would have allowed the state to retain dollars for education and transporta-

The district attorney argued that for inmates with life sentences for murder, taking away the death penalty would remove the potential for further punishment if they kill a prison guard or another inmate.

“It will essentially say once you do your first murder, the rest are free,” Brauchler said.

Rare application This year’s proposal, Senate Bill 20-100, would repeal the death penalty for offenses charged on or after July 1, 2020.

Gov. Jared Polis has said that if the Legislature repeals the death penalty, he’d consider commuting Colorado’s death row inmates’ sentences. A vote for the repeal bill is a vote for that outcome, Brauchler said.

The third panelist, Skillful CEO Beth Cobert, suggested to employers in the audience to focus on skills.

Cobert spoke about Skillful’s mission. Skillful is an initiative to create a skills-based labor market from the Markle Foundation, a nonprofit tech and health care company.

Cobert said 80% of today’s jobs require at least a moderate or high level of certain skills. Cobert encouraged employers in the audience to consider hiring people on a skill-based platform over strictly looking at experience or credentials.

Cobert gave the example of a local sushi chef who rose to a high-ranking position because the employers were looking for a specific set of skills—attention to detail, ability to do repeatable tasks, etc.

“That’s what we mean when we’re saying looking for talent in different ways,” Cobert said. “That’s the kind of model we can unleash across Colorado.”

Fields, Sullivan and Brauchler all prefer the question of repealing the death penalty to be answered by voters in a statewide ballot question.

Tate said he understands that preference but that he has a “traditional view of the role of the lawmaker.”

No charges for STEM security guard who injured students Shamson Sundara will enter a diversion program, per agreement with victims

The privately hired security guard on duty during the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting injured two students and was illegally carrying a weapon on school grounds, 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May said in an announcement on Jan. 24.

But the guard also detained and disarmed one of the suspects, possibly saving more lives, May said, and acted in compliance with state law by using deadly force in an effort to stop the shooting.

The guard, identified by May as Shamson Sundara, will not face charges but will enter an adult diversion program, incorporating a restorative justice forum with the shooting victims.

The forum will be mediated by the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which began investigating the guard’s actions during the May

7 shooting after 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler forwarded the case to the office. Brauchler’s office is prosecuting the shooting suspects, Devon Erickson, 19, and Alec McKinney, 16. A spokeswoman said the office had no comment on May’s announcement.

As part of the agreement, Sundara will also complete 50 hours of Sundara community service.

“It should be noted that this agreement was reached in consultation with the injured victims and their families, law enforcement and the Douglas County School District,” May wrote.

Video played in court hearings for McKinney, who’s accused of masterminding the attack, shows the 16-year-old walking through the school halls with a gun pointed to his head, attempting to take his life when the guard discovered him.

Sundara was able to detain and disarm McKinney, who will face trial for 43 felony charges, including murder and attempted murder.

Several students were injured in the shooting. Senior Kendrick Castillo, 18, died while rushing Erickson.

Shortly after encountering McKinney, Sundara saw an individual dressed in street clothes round the hallway and then saw the muzzle of a gun, May said. He fired two shots in the direction of the gun.

Both shots missed the person but went through the wall of a nearby classroom and injured two students.

The person Sundara shot at turned out to be a law enforcement officer.

“As soon as the law enforcement officers identified themselves, Mr. Sundara immediately and fully complied with their commands,” May said.

The guard’s contract with STEM prohibited him from carrying a weapon on school grounds, but May said state statute permitted his use of deadly force in the situation.

“Our investigation has determined that his actions were in compliance with the applicable law,” May said.

Sundara, 30, has worked at BOSS High Level Protection for approximately one year. BOSS president Grant Whitus said the company holds Sundara as a hero who saved lives the day of the shooting.

“We didn’t believe from the beginning that Shamson would be charged with anything, so we’re

happy,” Whitus said. “He’s certainly a key witness going forward and he’s happy to help out the prosecution.”

He was not disciplined following STEM and has been promoted to an administrative position overseeing the company’s hiring and recruiting. Whitus said Sundara can still work in the field if he would like to.

“We wouldn’t stop him from doing that,” Whitus said.

Sundara is a military veteran who saw combat in the Middle East, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2008-12. He returned home and joined the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office as a deputy in 2013, staying until 2017. Whitus worked as a sergeant for the sheriff ’s office at the time until he left to start his security firm and later hired Sundara.

Whitus said he could not comment on why Sundara was armed at STEM despite his contract prohibiting it or why he fired his weapon toward the responding law enforcement officer.

“I hail both of them for what they did but in the chaos in mass shootings, things occur,” Whitus said.

“He’s a witness for this prosecution, so he’s going to have to tell his story during these trials.”

ith a Queen song on the speakers, a hockey game playing on a projector and lively conversation wafting from the bar across the room, a small book club sat tucked into the corner on comfortable couches.

The group discussed conventions of the genre of the book they read — “Dead Mountain,� a look at the mystery of hikers dying in a Russian mountain range — and offered their two cents. “I felt like you really knew these people,� said Kristen Day, a 43-yearold from Centennial, talking about the attention to detail the book gave the characters.

That’s the kind of discussion that has continued for about three years at Halfpenny Brewing Company in west Centennial, ever since the brewery reached out to the Arapahoe Libraries district and got the Books on Tap club started. “The library district has about 25 book and movie clubs — this is really the only one offsite,� said Pamela Hallaren, an adult services librarian for the district.

C-Lab aims to restructure higher ed using blockchain tech Nonprofit and government holding program launch meeting Jan. 30

For those working in higher education, when it comes to inequity or student debt, there’s no shortage of possible solutions, said Taylor Kendal, chief strategy adviser at education nonprofit Learning Economy.

One example: A digital diploma that lists every course a student has taken and every certification they have earned. An employer who could look at that diploma, recognize a student’s qualifications and offer them an entry-level job, even if the student has only spent one year — or maybe even less — at a university.

The trick is figuring out which solution will work best and then rallying the manpower to make it happen, Kendal said. That’s where C-Lab comes in.

The new state initiative is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) and Learning Economy, which is funding the initiative.

Launching this January, the program seeks to address education concerns using new technologies, including blockchain technology.

The CDHE brainstormed the Colorado Education Work Lab (C-Lab) to meet its strategic goal to increase educational equity, after having been part of the state’s former Council for the Advancement of Blockchain Technology Use, Ellis said.

“We’re really thankful for the governor’s support; he has this agenda for bold ideas, and our executive director (Angie Paccione) does as well,” he said. “It was inspiring for all of us to say, `let’s go out there and see if we can make these practical applications of blockchain.’”

The C-Lab also aims to address the skills gap between the skills that graduates have and the skills employers expect them to have, Kendal said.

2018 Skills Report, 33.5% of employers do not believe their job applicants have the occupational skills required for the position; 22.6% do not believe applicants have the interpersonal skills required.

To address this, C-Lab seeks to bring universities, employers, blockchain experts and the government together. The lab has invited stakeholders to a free event on Jan. 30 at History Colorado, 1200 N. Broadway.

Attendees will include faculty from institutions across the area such as Arapahoe Community College, Red Rocks Community College and the University of Colorado.

The all-day event will include panels and activities explaining what the

C-Lab is and allowing groups to join the C-Lab network, Kendal said.

Groups in the network will download the app, which will allow them to weigh in as the lab selects its first endeavors. The digital diploma, which could be feasible through blockchain technology, is just one example of what the groups might ultimately decide on, Ellis said.

South Suburban looking for art-on-loan applicants

Sportsman’s Warehouse to open in Parker Retailer takes over site of former Gander Mountain

South Suburban Parks and Recreation and the South Suburban Public Art Committee are looking for artists in the community to apply for the art-on-loan program.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 11.

The committee recommends three sculptures to be displayed at Goodson Recreation Center’s courtyard and entryway, and two sculptures for dispay at Hudson Gardens and Event Center. The sculptures must be approved by the South Suburban board of directors.

The art-on-loan program is a year-long outdoor exhibit (June 2020 to June 2021) designed to promote public interest in art, develop community pride and enhance the visitor experience at Goodson Recreation Center and Hudson Gardens. The artist-owned sculptures will be displayed for one year. Sculptures are selected by the public art committee and Hudson Gardens.

Applicants must be Colorado residents, and sculptures must meet the site requirements and remain on display for one year. All sculptures must be for sale. Each artist receives a $500 honorarium for their display. South Suburban receives a 20 percent commission on sculptures sold through the program.

Sportsman’s Warehouse will open in February in Parker in the building that previously housed Gander Mountain.

The Alaska-based sports and outdoors retailer will be located at 18420 Cottonwood Drive, replacing Gander Mountain, which opened in 2016, reopened in 2018 and ultimately closed last year.

The facility is 57,000 square feet.

“As we continue to grow our brand and business, we are excited to expand our presence in Colorado and California,” Sportsman’s Warehouse CEO Jon Barker states in a press release from Jan. 16.

Two new California stores are planned to open in 2020, one in Brentwood and one in Corona.

“While other competitors deemphasize or exit the space, Sportsman’s continues to opportunistically open new stores and grow our business through both ecommerce and store locations,” Barker states. “We look forward to serving these communities through providing outstanding gear and exceptional service to inspire outdoor memories.”

The release states additional openings will be planned “in the near future.” Sportsman’s Warehouse will have 107 stores in 27 states once the three new locations open. Colorado has seven

Sportsman’s Warehouse locations.

Camping World Holdings Inc. bought the bankrupt Gander Mountain in 2017.

Camping World planned to reopen as Gander Outdoors with slight changes in 2018.

The building was built amid a development boom in 2016, when the Gander opened a slew of stores across the country, many of which shuttered within their first four years.

The building on Cottonwood Drive, across from Costco near E-470, was built specifically for a sportsman-type retailer, outfitted with a reinforced gun room and plenty of floor space. Matt Carlson, economic development director for the Town of Parker, said the store closed because of a corporate bankruptcy and had nothing to do with the Parker Gander Mountain location’s success.

Sports and outdoors retailers, like Cabela’s, Carlson said, were an area of “retail leakage” the town identified—a case of sales tax dollars leaving the town for services not offered in Parker.

Big 5 Sporting Goods is the only other similar store in Parker.

The next closest sports and outdoors retailer is Cabela’s in Lone Tree, which opened just west of I-25.

“There’s enough difference there in the makeup of their products and their price points we think they will differentiate themselves,” Carlson said.

And, Carlson said, the new store could be a regional draw for the town. There are two other Sportsman’s Warehouses in the Denver area, one in Sheridan and another in Thornton.

The students could earn digital proof, known as badges, for specialized skills they gain through the program. Potentially, they could post those badges on sites like LinkedIn. Adobe runs a similar program, awarding digital badges for Adobe certifications.

“It is a good way for a student to prove that they have a particular skill,” she said. “I’m excited to see a way we could move the badges offered only within our learning management system to something that the student can take with them into the workforce.”

She also believes the C-Lab will help the school expand its opportunities to use open educational resources (OER), such as free online texts. Through a state grant promoting the use of OER, ACC students saved more than $85,000 in textbook costs last semester, she said. By networking with other C-Lab members, she believes the impact could be even greater.

Rachel Newlon, an open education ambassador and English professor at ACC, said that the network could also allow colleges to form new connections with employers who could offer work or volunteer opportunities to students.

Additionally, the C-Lab could pave the way for real-world projects to be tackled by students in CU Boulder’s Technology, Cybersecurity and Policy program, said Garrett Schumacher, the program’s communications director.

Students and faculty could potentially conduct research projects on the development of C-Lab and help shape the program throughout its early stages, he said.

Those projects “could not only provide immediate learning and research opportunities, but change the future of higher education for the better,” he said.

The timeline Currently, the C-Lab is in its research phase as it selects a potential solution to pilot, Kendal said. By the second half of 2020, the lab aims to have three universities and three employers piloting the selected solution; by the end of 2022, the goal is 100 universities and 100 employers.

The nonprofit has set a budget of $13.85 million for the next three years.

It’s a big goal: to potentially reorganize education so students are “not necessarily working to a fouryear degree, but accruing skills and knowledge,” Kendal said.

He added that the department and nonprofit have embraced the fact that they’re “dreaming big.”

And for many faculty members around the area, that’s exactly what has inspired them to get involved, Newlon said.

“We can work together to create something that benefits all institutions,” she said. C-Lab “is a blank canvas, and we all have tons of paint.”

Probe can’t confirm sightings of drones Reports from rural Colorado, other areas lead some to doubt official denial

sightings in Colorado turned out to be small, hobbyist drones, known commercial aircraft or weather phenomena.

For Dan Carlson, who said he’s spotted and even followed large drones flying remarkably long distances near his farm in western Nebraska, the summary of findings puts little to rest. “What I saw did not conform to either a hobbyist drone or a civilianaviation aircraft,� said Carlson, a retired meteorologist.

For over a month, law enforcement agencies in eastern Colorado and much of Nebraska have been taking calls about unusual drone sightings. Drones as big as cars have been said to fly back and forth in the sky for extended periods after sundown.

F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, which oversees 150 Minuteman III nuclear missiles in silos scattered across the prairie in the three-state region, denied involvement. “Our base is kind of a drone no-fly zone. So we do have counter-UAS — unmanned aerial systems — training that goes on within the confines of this installation. But any drones spotted outside this installation are not part of our fleet,� base spokesman Lt. Jon Carkhuff said.

An official investigation into reports of large drones flying in groups over the Western U.S. plains in the hours after sunset has confirmed nothing illegal or out of the ordinary, a finding of little solace to folks who say the truth is still out there.

Investigators will scale back flights of a heat-detecting plane to try to corroborate reports as they’re made but will continue to look into new reports, Colorado officials said Jan. 14. “The Department of Public Safety is committed to still gathering investigation evidence,� Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management spokeswoman Micki Trost said.

The investigation focused on an area roughly along Interstate 76 through northeastern Colorado but didn’t extend into Nebraska or Wyoming, where reports also have been made. Several confirmed drone

though they are cooperating with the Federal Aviation Administration and FBI. The Colorado Department of Public Safety, working with local law enforcement, found: ď‚&#x; Of 90 drone reports received from Nov. 23 to Jan. 13, law enforcement officials were able to confirm that 14 were smaller-sized hobbyist drones. ď‚&#x; Of 23 drone reports between Jan. 6 and Jan. 13, a period that involved flights of the heat-detecting plane working in conjunction with investigators on the ground, officials determined 13 were smaller hobbyist drones, stars or planets and six were attributable to known commercial aircraft or atmospheric conditions.

Authorities weren’t able to identify fliers of the hobbyist drones. ď‚&#x; Four confirmed sightings of the 23 were unidentified. ď‚&#x; A drone reported to have flown near a Flight for Life medical helicopter during daytime didn’t appear related to the recent sightings. Investigators couldn’t confirm a violation occurred.

Colorado has more than 24,000 registered drones, and pilots reported over 2,200 drone sightings in Colorado to the FAA in 2018, state officials pointed out in a news release.

Weird-drone reports from coast to coast abound on social media, but the local phenomenon may be taper-

ing off in recent days. “The sightings and the reports in my county have diminished incredibly,� Morgan County, Colorado, Sheriff David Martin said on Jan. 14.

Yet Carlson said he’s sighted drones four times since Jan. 4, including drones that appeared in pairs twice. While he couldn’t confirm their shape in the dark, the changing orientation of their blue, white, red and sometimes green lights suggested rotation, he said. k They came within a mile or two of his house, flying about 800 feet high. Y w One drone sped away at up to 60 mph when he drove after it, he said. W s He followed the drone over 10 miles. ‘We meant everything to each other’ Keleshia Nash, killed at 22, hoped to emerge from troubled life

Kewhan Dickerson winces when kids ask about his family.

Dickerson, a kids’ counselor at YMCA Denver, said the youngsters he works with like to ask about his life.

When they ask if he has siblings, he says yes, he had a sister.

“I start flashing back,” said Dickerson, 28.

Dickerson’s sister, Keleshia Nash, was shot and killed by Andrew O’John in a north Littleton apartment in September 2018.

O’John, 21, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for Nash’s death on Jan. 17 — 12 years for reckless manslaughter, and 18 years for assault with a deadly weapon, to be served concurrently. In exchange for a guilty plea, prosecutors dropped a firstdegree murder charge. The district attorney’s office declined to comment on the case.

Nash, 22 when she died, and O’John had been dating for a few weeks on Sept. 26, 2018, according to testimony at a March 2019 court hearing.

That afternoon, O’John got mad after seeing a photo on Nash’s phone of her and her ex-boyfriend, O’John later told investigators, and the couple spent the evening drinking and arguing.

O’John shot Nash around midnight, according to court testimony. She died two days later at a hospital.

Dickerson said Nash’s death robbed him of her powerful, sometimes troubling spirit.

“If you were a friend, she’d go to extremes for you,” Dickerson said. “If you wanted to go do something, she’d be the first to say ‘let’s go.’ If you were in a fight, she’d be the first in your corner.”

early years with their mother, Kisha, Dickerson said. Nash’s dad left when she was young, and with Kisha suffering from lupus, the siblings had each other to lean on.

Dickerson recalled when he and his little sister would reenact scenes from Disney movies in their one-bedroom apartment.

“The Lion King, Toy Story — we knew all the lines,” Dickerson said.

“We were super close. She looked up to me. We meant everything to each other.”

When Nash was 11, she walked into her mother’s bedroom and found her dead.

The siblings went to live with their grandma, CeCe, but Nash was never the same, her brother said.

“She started acting out,” Dickerson said. “She was seeking help. She felt like nobody understood her.”

Still, Dickerson and his sister meant a lot to each other.

“We were like yin and yang,” Dickerson said. “She needed me to tell her to calm down and not overreact. I needed her to tell me to defend myself, to express myself instead of hiding it.”

As Nash grew older, she sought male attention, Dickerson said.

was trying to fill that void in her life, I think,” he said. “She started living on the wild side, and would date guys on the wrong side of crime.”

Nash’s lifestyle got her into trouble, court records show, and at times she faced charges for shoplifting, disturbing the peace and marijuana possession. Dickerson began to drift apart from his sister.

Through it all, though, the siblings shared a devotion to their family, and to grandma CeCe, whom they called Nana.

In the months before Nash died,

CeCe, suffering from pulmonary hypertension, took a turn for the worse.

The family took turns staying with her, helping her eat, use the bathroom and move around her home.

A month before Nash was killed, she left to attend a court hearing during one of her shifts with CeCe, Dickerson said. CeCe died in the hours Nash was away.

Nash was crushed, and soon fell into a depression.

“She said she wanted to be with mom and Nana,” Dickerson said. “She started drinking more. But it started bringing us back together. She would talk about trying to get out of the life she was in.

“In the last couple weeks, she was trying to pick herself up. She bought a car and started paying down her court fees. She wanted to go back to school.

She wanted to be a veterinarian. Before we’d hang up the phone, we’d say, ‘Let’s do it for Nana.’”

More than a year after Nash was killed, Dickerson said he’s starting to grasp that his sister is gone.

“I was just numb that first year,” Dickerson said. “Our family’s taking this day by day. Holidays are still pretty tough.”

Dickerson said he’s trying to carry on and live well in honor of his sister.

After losing three of the most important women in his life, Dickerson said he tries to be a comforting presence for other grieving people.

“I need to stay strong,” he said.

VOICES In the war of words, the words are losing

“L

ead” not only means “first,” “foremost” and “front,” lead is a heavy metal, hence Led Zeppelin. QUIET An old adage in DESPERATION journalism is “don’t bury the lead.”

Journalists are not supposed to begin a story with details of secondary importance.

However, I am uncertain what my lead is this week. Perhaps Craig Marshall by the time I have finished I will know.

If I had to take a guess, I’d say my lead is the wonderful conundrum of

“like,” to qualify, clog and clutter almost everything that is said by almost everyone under the age of 40.

Why? Why? Why? What if journalists for this publication and for the major dailies were equally lax and leisurely when they reported, oh, let’s say an impeachment hearing?

I may not know what my lead is, but I know exactly what I am doing.

I am defusing something of great importance with something of little importance. It’s what I do — it’s what we do — in order to survive.

t has been said that the fear of loss is more powerful than the possibility of gain. It has also been said that some of us live with an abundance mentality while others choose to live with a scarcity mindset.

In a recent strategic and tactical planning session with a few clients, this very WINNING topic became one of WORDS the drivers of our conversations. We were discussing potential partnerships for the company, and as we did, one person championed the idea while another person shot down the idea.

The person championing the idea was Michael Norton convinced that the partnership would yield additional results and revenue. The person who was against the partnership felt like effort would create problems, as they already had competing partners, projects, and priorities.

Basically, the opinion was that the

pie was already too small and creating another slice might dilute the best interests of everyone involved.

As I facilitated the discussion and listened to both sides, I stopped the conversation and asked if it would be helpful if I shared a story about a company and individuals facing a similar situation and where some advice that I had been given really paid off. The team said yes, and I shared some of the greatest pieces of wisdom that I had ever received.

As we revisited the abundancy versus scarcity mentality, I first shared with them the following statement, “There is money and opportunity everywhere.” A former colleague of mine who had decided to leave the position he was in to take an executive role with another company had written an email to all of us as he finished up and was about to leave the organization. It was motivating and encouraging with just the right sense and tonality appropriate for his departure.

Political conflict? It’s our fault, but there’s help

I

n the heat of the presidential impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate that is occurring as I write this, we are reminded of GUEST how deeply politiCOLUMN cally divided our nation is. Since the first of January, I’ve had so many speaking requests for “how to manage political conflicts” it’s hard to keep up.

Most of us want to know how we Linda Newell can survive 2020, in our relationships, personal stress levels, and as a nation.

First, we need to admit it’s our fault. We let it happen. But we can change it. Statistically, political divisiveness in our country has been steadily increasing over the last few decades. There are many reasons for that systemically — gerrymandering has created more partisan districts,

to leave? For some, they believed he saw a bigger and greater opportunity ahead, albeit risky, and he was stepping out to take a chance and believe in the abundance mentality. Others believed he left because he saw the company as having hit their peak - and that any opportunity for future growth was going to be limited. Fewer deals, fewer sales, and less earning potential. This was a scarcity mentality that invoked fear for those who couldn’t see the bigger picture.

By the end of our strategy session, we all agreed that the partnership made sense and created a plan to manage the existing partnerships, priorities, and projects to maximize success while also creating a plan to optimize the new partnership. The abundance mentality had won the day.

Outside of business, how often do we choose the scarcity mentality, afraid of what could go wrong instead of planning for what will go right?

Our defensiveness kicks in and we condition ourselves to think or say “No” first. We see life through the lens

When they get to the Capitol, they’re on those far ends of the political spectrum and can headlock. Thanks to Citizens United, add all the secret “dark money” ads that are rude, negative, and often factually false.

And now, we’re stuck in our personal algorithms on social media and are limited to our own bubbles of like-minded news feeds and friends’ posts so we’re only seeing what we want to see and we don’t get to hear other points of view for any balance.

So what are we doing? Some of us are glued to the impeachment proceedings, political commentary from our favorite news source, and then do our best to persuade all those around us of the way as we see it.

Others might gingerly talk about politics (if we have to) just to be civil with our friends and family or to look like we know what’s going on in the news. Then the rest of us are doing everything we can to avoid

of loss instead of gain. Then one day, someone shares with us exactly what we need to hear, that money and opportunity are everywhere, all we have to do is pursue it and take the actions necessary to get after each opportunity.

If we never ask the questions we want to ask, the answer will always be no. If we leave every putt short, the ball will never go into the hole.

Regardless of our career, role, or interests, there is opportunity everywhere, and not only is opportunity everywhere, it is available to each and every one of us. It just becomes so much easier with an abundance mentality instead of a scarcity mentality.

Some statistics show that one in 10 divorces since 2016 list political differences contributed to the split.

Other data show that now almost 50% of parents don’t want their children marrying into the “other” political party.

What good is any of this for us as a family, community, or country? In another election year, how do we talk politics without yelling, seething, or silencing each other or ourselves?

In conversation, how do we ethically maintain relationships while keeping integrity with our own values?

How do we get to empathy and understanding to transform our minds, relationships, and nation?

Before you get even more depressed, there is some good news.

There are conflict management techniques that can help. That’s next month’s column. But if you can’t wait till then, you’re welcome to catch one of our Inside Civics events for tips. In the meantime, the biggest hint is to stay curious with others and keep an open mind. We’ll see if they can do that in Congress. Or maybe we’ll have to show them how.

Community service groups push for younger recruits amid membership challenges

T

hey help distribute eyeglasses to people in need in other countries. They make sure cancer patients get Valentine’s Day gifts. They light children’s faces up with much-needed school supplies.

They’re the smiling faces at community concerts and other events.

And yet many people have no idea they exist.

“The name is not out there,” said Mike Shaw, a 63-year-old Lakewood resident who volunteers with the Kiwanis Club of Belmar, a local chapter of the international Kiwanis service organization. He didn’t know what Kiwanis was until around the time he joined, now 13 years ago.

Familiar names to older crowds — such as the Rotary and Lions, similarly minded service groups — have been struggling for decades as participation has declined. A bevy of news stories in recent years — and not-so-recent years — has pointed to that trend. As far back as 1992, a New York Times story sounded the alarm about membership decline for various possible reasons, such as Americans staying less rooted in one place or young people possibly feeling like the clubs were “out of synch with the times.”

“On balance, I think the Rotary has declined in membership and has not appealed to younger generation or women,” said Lynn Hoffman, professor of business management at Metropolitan State University of Denver and a Rotary member since 1994. “My particular club has been a little better about getting women and diversity and younger people in, but that’s not true generally.”

One president of a small Lions club in the Northglenn-Thornton area remembers the Lions being much more of a local fixture.

“I can remember as a kid we would have Lions picnics with all the families together,” said Zoe Reese, whose father was a founding member of her club in 1959. Reese felt the club was more connected to the community back then.

Clubs such as Reese’s have experi-

enced shrinking numbers. That trend may be due in part to an aging membership base, something that Rotary clubs in general have experienced and are focusing on, said Gail Lehrmann, a Parker resident and president of the Rotary Club of Parker.

Many members have died or moved away, Reese said of her club.

The overall trend is a loss in clubs in her north Denver metro area, she said, but some, such as in Arvada and Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood, are new or revitalized.

“Yes, it’s smaller, but we ain’t dead yet,” Reese said.

Theories abound on why, including the idea that young people may not identify with an older crowd. Then there’s the societal change that social media has brought about, allowing young people to find connection without the aid of community groups.

“I think (that’s) partially correct there,” Hoffman said. “I don’t think that’s the whole answer, but yes, they’re meeting their social needs totally differently than we are.”

Memoir recounts longing, looking for birth mother Seattle author has roots in area around Littleton

Sara Easterly recently introduced her newly published memoir, “Searching for Mom,” to an audience at Littleton’s Tattered Cover, where the book sold out. Easterly, a Seattle resident for 20 years, says she still has Littleton area connections and memories: Her dad lives in Castle Easterly Pines and her sister is in Highlands Ranch.

When we spoke via phone recently, she recalled growing up in the Littleton area: living on Windermere Way and in Centennial (Highlands 460) and attending Powell Middle School, Arapahoe High School and CSU, where she minored in English, as a start on a broadcast journalism career. “I just

“If I look at what I went through in high school, it doesn’t compare at all to what kids in middle school and high school do now,” said Lehrmann, 68, pointing out that parents in this era support kids’ sports teams and other activities. “Kids have so many more opportunities than I had when I grew up.”

“I consider myself a children’s and young adult author,” she said, adding that she’s presently working on a YA novel. She has worked in publicity for books as a career — and always includes Tattered Cover when planning tours for authors.

She started writing as a young girl, she says in this memoir of growing up an adoptee, with a loving home, but still … She was compelled to seek out her birth mother and be reassured about her origins before she could get on with her adult life smoothly. “In adoption circles, there’s a phrase: `living in the fog,’” Easterly said.

“Searching for Mom” opens, sadly, with back-to-back trips for Sara, struggling with her mom’s impending death, searching and finding spiritual help and launching into childhood memories of herself as a 7-yearold, caring for a dying butterfly and

discovering her family church and its teachings, as her mother became more involved there … At 9, she was able to express her feeling that her birth mother hadn’t wanted her — “threw her away …”

And her struggle to find that birth mother — and to define “the perfect mother” — stayed with her, despite a loving home and parents who supported her. Her adoptive mother did later give birth to her sister, Amy, who married and had a baby named Kenna, with whom Sara fell in love … and for whom she grieved when a genetic lung disorder took the baby’s life.

Sara married Jeff happily and tried to be a “Perfect Parent” to daughters Violet and Olive, but the search for her mother continued, aided by her loving husband … and an adoption search agency.

It had been a “gray market” adoption, rather than one conducted through an agency, because the mother was only 15 when Sara was born and she was immediately pressured to consider adoption, so conventional search channels did not work. When that mother

was finally located, Sara refused to accept her at first, having dreamed up idealized figures resembling Madonna or Rebeca, a psychologist who headed a group counseling program. Here was a woman who looked like her …

And her adoptive mom really wanted nothing to do with finding the birth mom.

“Couldn’t all three hearts be honored?’ Sara wondered. But as she learned of the obstetrician’s pressure on the young mother, Diane, to give the child up for adoption — and societal pressures, she backed off.

The book continues to its last pages as Sara and Amy travel final days with their mom and Sara finds increasing certainty about her faith.

A contributing factor was a genetic predisposition to a lung disorder, which took baby Kenna and eventually, Sara and Amy’s mom. Later, Sara developed lung problems, and survived a double lung transplant. Throughout, her faith carried her through and it enters into her final sentence …

One of Hoffman’s classes is small — only 10 students — but just two out of that 10 said they’ve heard of clubs such as the Rotary and Kiwanis.

“I think going to school is so stressful for people” that they don’t have time for service, said Eloy Moya, a 22-year-old in Hoffman’s class. “I don’t think it’s the fact that we don’t want to help other people — I just don’t know what those clubs are.”

Moya worked at a nonprofit and noted there are other avenues by which to give back to the community.

Many of Hoffman’s students said they’d consider joining a service club after graduation, though.

In this era, service clubs have made efforts to cater to younger people who are interested in volunteering but are too busy for weekly meetings.

The Rotary started online “e-clubs,” where people can get involved in projects and meet online instead of having meetings physical places, Hoffman said.

For years, branches of clubs for a younger crowd — such as the Rotary’s Interact Clubs for middle- and highschool students and Rotaract for ages 18 to 30 — have made a direct effort to get young people involved, Hoffman said.

And still, all over the metro area, groups as small as four and some large as dozens meet at local restaurants

and offer free lunch or breakfast for members, planning their volunteer efforts and enjoying each other’s company.

Shaw’s Belmar Kiwanis club has gone door-to-door at local businesses and makes pitches for recruitment while volunteering at Lakewood events such as the city’s summer concert series. The club hasn’t gotten many bites, but it isn’t giving up.

Dominick Breton, a 35-year-old Wheat Ridge resident who rose up the ranks to become lieutenant governor of a Jefferson County region of Kiwanis clubs, emphasized the importance of service clubs in communities.

“Kids need Kiwanis,” Breton said, echoing a slogan of the club. “We’re all about kids and giving back to the community. It gets you going at the start of your day.”

Arapahoe youth awards nominations now open County mayors, commissioners seek high school seniors who have overcome personal adversity STAFF REPORT

High school seniors in Arapahoe County who have overcome personal adversity and created positive change in their lives are eligible for the Arapahoe County Mayors and Commissioners Youth Awards program.

The group of local leaders works with the Arapahoe County Foundation and outside sponsors to award the one-time scholarships. Students are free to use the scholarships at vocational, two-year or four-year colleges in the 2020-21 or 2021-22 academic years as long as they’ve enrolled before the end of 2020.

Students must live and attend school in Arapahoe County, but their education can be in a nontraditional setting such as a group home or an alternative school. Qualified students must be nominated by teach-

“It’s difficult for many students to afford post-secondary education, yet without this level of schooling it’s almost impossible to get a job that pays a living wage,” Arapahoe County Commissioner Nancy Jackson said in a news release. “The youth awards recognize the hard work its takes to overcome all kinds of adversity, and these scholarships provide some help for bright, driven and resilient students toward achieving their longterm goals.”

The deadline for submitting nomination form is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb 28.

The game itself and the family that surrounds me with my teammates and my coach. They are always like making me do my best.

What is your favorite class in school and why?

Physics. It makes sense to me right now and I am understanding it the best, which makes it fun.

What do you like to do away from sports and school?

I usually spend time with my friends or family. I love hiking so we do that a lot.

What are your plans after high school?

I am committed to go play basketball at Colorado State and I am going to be majoring in mechanical engineering, so physics is preparing me for that.

ali Clark had adjustments to make before playing basketball at Cherry Creek High School.

Clark played her freshman and sophomore seasons at Class 3A Lamar before moving to 5A Cherry Creek last season, where she helped the Bruins win the state girls basketball championship to go along with one state title she was part of as a frosh on the Lamar basketball team.

“It was kind of a big adjustment,” admitted the 6-foot-3 Clark. “Lamar was a 3A school. We had 400 kids versus here where there are 4,000.

It was an adjustment in school, and

the athletics definitely got much harder. So my classes are harder here and there’s more competition.”

Clark could move among the top 10 career rebounders in the state this season, as she is currently 14th and 63 rebounds out of the top 10.

“The biggest change I saw was size,” said Clark who was one of the leaders on the Bruins’ volleyball team. “At Lamar when I used to play there I was always the biggest on the floor and in most cases that is usually what happens here. But you do see the Lauren Betts (Grandview sophomore) of the world at 6-7 and the average overall has increased.

My role has increased a little bit. I doing more rebounding and having to take more shots because I’m one of the leading scorers on the team.”

What is the key to being a good rebounder?

Height obviously helps and just being able to realize where the ball might go and just being in position early. And fighting early to get an easier spot.

How hard is it when you get into foul trouble?

I try and play as clean as I can for the first couple quarters but if I get a foul I back off so I can stay in the game. If I get fouls later I don’t have to worry about it as much.

COACH’S TAKE: ‘A big aspect of her game that is underrated is how good her hands are. She catches everything. She is such an intelligent player. She is just not a big kid, she is a really skilled basketball player.’

ometimes for Rocky Beers and his sister Raegan, it is difficult not to bring what happens on the basketball court home with them.

Rocky, a 6-foot-6 senior, and Raegan, a 6-3 sophomore, are having good seasons so far for the Valor Christian boys and girls basketball teams.

However, often OVERTIME what happens on the basketball floor winds up coming home.

“Usually when we get home we talk about our school day and our practice and what happened because we Jim Benton didn’t see each other’s practice, so we talk about what happened,” said Raegan, who is averaging 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds for the Eagles.

“A lot of it goes home,” agreed Rocky, who was a tight end on the football team and is scoring 7.9 points and grabbing 8.5 rebounds for the basketball team. “College basketball is always on our TV at home.”

“We’re a pretty close family so we tell each other pretty much everything about what is going on, mostly basketball,” added Raegan. “Usually all the stuff about basketball comes home.”

Both admit to being competitive with each other.

“Yeah we are competitive,” said Raegan. “We race to everything to who is going to shower first or who eats what first and like who gets the leftovers.”

Both almost simultanously utter that Rocky is usually first.

The siblings got to watch each other play several times during the preseason but not during the Jeffco conference season because of scheduling.

So what is the reaction when they do watch the other play?

Are there positive or negative responses?

“I get to see most of her tournaments during the offseason,” said Rocky. “That’s pretty fun. For me it’s more like healthy criticism, like `you could do this better’ or it’s like `hey, make your free throws.’

“For her, she is more encouraging.”

Local rescue dog to participate in Puppy Bowl Aspen, an Australian cattle dog mix from Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue, will compete to win the Lombarky trophy STAFF REPORT

An Australian cattle dog mix from Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue will represent Colorado in the 2020 Animal Planet Puppy Bowl XVI. Aspen was born in May 2019. She and her seven littermates were found in Gallup, New Mexico, where their mother dug a hideout for them near the river and train tracks, according to a news release. They along with their mother, Molly Mae, were transferred to Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue at one week of age. They all grew big and strong in their foster homes. Aspen’s siblings have since found homes. Aspen will be available for adoption after Super Bowl Sunday.

Based in Broomfield, Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue is the only rescue representing Colorado this year in the Puppy Bowl. Since August 2010, Rocky Mountain Puppy Rescue’s mission is to save cats, kittens, puppies and adult dogs from being euthanized in overcrowded kill shelters. They place these rescues with foster families until they are adopted to their forever homes.

The rescue promotes its mission through education about spaying and neutering, proper exercise, feeding, grooming, training and always adopting first. Combined with its NM Spay It Forward Spay Neuter Program, the rescue’s transfers and adoptions have brought over 8,000 animals to safety.

Animal Planet continues this tradition this year with a new set of animals that are ready to tumble and fumble into their new homes across the nation. While we will be sure to keep score of touchdowns and puppy penalties, these pups playing the game are sure to go big and go home.
