Sheriff’s Calls Sound and fury CONIFER – Though only a casual acquaintance, Cassius made bold to ask Julius if he could occupy Julius’s unoccupied mother-inlaw suite while he grappled with a disputatious divorce. Not wild about the idea, but sympathetic to Cassius’s situation and naturally inclined to help a bro in need, Julius bade Cassius to make himself at home. Apparently taking Julius’s welcome literally, on the evening of Apr. 21 the cocky lodger turned up the mother-in-law stereo so loud that it was “vibrating the walls” of the master suite. Julius texted Cassius, asking him to reduce the racket, a request Cassius either didn’t read, or simply didn’t heed, which is why a few minutes later Julius was knocking at Cassius’s mother-inlaw door to convey the request in person. “What are you going to do about it?” Cassius snarled. What Julius did about it was insist, which so incensed Cassius that he “slapped (Julius) in the face.” While Julius called JCSO, Cassius took a powder,

and when deputies arrived Julius was unable to give them any information about the testy temporary tenant except to say that he lives in the area and has no phone. Officers were eventually able to get a hold of Cassius’s mother, who promised to tell her son that the deputies would like a word with him at his first convenience.

Fan mail CONIFER – It’s nice to be appreciated, right? On Apr. 21, venerable Methuselah hunted up a store manager and handed him a card addressed to Rachel, a comely young employee. Opening the card some hours later, Rachel found a $20 bill and more appreciation than she could comfortably stomach. “Please don’t think I’m being creepy or weird,” Methuselah wrote. “I just wanted to express my appreciation.

I like you and enjoy talking to you.

You are beautiful and have great hair. I want to learn more about you than I know now, and I thought you’d like to know a little about me.”

What follows is a long, chatty, intimate portrait of a man who “doesn’t drink, but does ‘toke,’” who is “a gamer, but not a ‘PLAYER,’” who likes “metal and hard rock” but is “defiantly not a dancer,” who is “not prejudiced against anyone except racists,” and who enjoys “being just friends with women,” but is also “divorced and so am available” and is “looking for a romantic relationship as well as friendship.” Just in time, or maybe way too late, he concludes “I can’t wait to learn more about you too! I hope that you will call so we can talk and start really getting to know each other. I am all for going slow and just seeing what happens.” Rachel thought the letter creepy and weird enough to give to her mother, who thought it creepy and weird enough to give to JCSO deputies, who thought it creepy and weird enough to give it back to Methuselah along with the admonition that Rachel wants no more contact with him. The way deputies report it, “he began to cry and stated that he was just trying to be nice and

didn’t want to get in any trouble” Officers advised him that if he doesn’t stop appreciating Rachel he’ll be in trouble a-plenty. Methuselah “began crying harder.”

Stare crossed EVERGREEN – Blithely walking through the office building parking lot on the morning of Apr. 2, Mr. Blythe’s bright mood was blighted when a man in a black Audi threw his car into reverse and “almost hit me” while roaring out of his space. Adding insult to near-injury, Black Audi leveled a hostile “stare” at Blythe and snarled “What are you going to do about it, old man?”

Blythe told Black Audi he was going to “call the cops” about it. “Go ahead,” sneered Black Audi, discreetly skedaddling. Blythe called the cops anyway, telling deputies that he wasn’t interested in pursuing charges, but that he did want the paltry parking lot peccadillo on record. Officers obliged.

Questions continue about proposed rec center on 285 Traffic and water impact explored with MEC Collective

Increased traffic and access to water appear to be two of the biggest issues that Conifer area residents have with the plan for a privately operated recreation center on U.S. 285.

At the second virtual community meeting conducted by the developers on May 11, about 20 people wanted answers to questions on those topics and more, though answers weren’t always available.

The developers, Chris and Georgina Lewis of Evergreen and Ken and Amy Holtschlag of Morrison, propose constructing a 100,000-squarefoot building on 19 acres on Settlers Drive near Inter-Canyon Fire Station 3. They also envision an indoor turf field and an indoor tennis/multisport area, plus rooms for fitness and yoga classes, a snack bar and more, though the designs are

Traffic In response to questions and comments, Chris Lewis said a traffic study hasn’t been done yet, and he and his partners are in conversations with Inter-Canyon Fire officials.

Station 3 will be rebuilt next year, and it will become the training hub for both the Inter-Canyon and Elk Creek fire departments. According to some on the call, Inter-Canyon asked CDOT for an emergency signal on U.S. 285 so ambulances and fire trucks could safely navigate onto the highway to no avail.

Residents are concerned that the MEC Collective would dump dozens more cars on a busy road, and crossing lanes of traffic to make left turns, already a dangerous proposition on U.S. 285, would become even more dangerous.

Some suggested that there should be a special sign to stop cars out of the MEC Collective when there is an emergency to ensure firefighters and emergency-response personnel can do their jobs.

Chris Lewis said they have been trying to answer the community’s questions as quickly and thoroughly as possible, but some questions will have to wait for thorough answers.

“We don’t have information yet to answer water and traffic questions,” he said. “To adequately answer the questions, we need hard data, and we don’t have it yet. We are not hiding. It’s highly important to us that we respond to all comments. You may not agree with the project or want it in your backyard, but there

Water Chris Lewis said the developers want to put in a state-of-the-art grey water system that would recycle water from showers and sinks for the ice rink.

While he didn’t have specific data, he estimated that the rec center would not use any more water than homes if the 19 acres were developed for single-family homes.

“It’s tough to say how much water will be used,” he said. “Water is the most critical factor — if we can’t get water at a reasonable rate, then it’s a non-starter. Over the last two years, I’ve been scouting heavily, and this was the best available location with the best water availability with the best topography.”

A neighbor countered that it was best for the business but not necessarily for neighbors who have to look at the building and parking lot.

Chris Lewis said water could be trucked and stored if the location temporarily ran out of water, so the MEC Collective could be selfsufficient.

Big reopening for Tiny Town After a canceled 2020, attraction set to get back on track Memorial Day weekend

Tiny Town has survived floods and encroaching fires. Lucky for area children, it has also survived COVID-19.

The diminutive municipality opens for the year at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 29.

After sitting closed for 20 months, Tiny Town’s workers and volunteers are cleaning, polishing and prepping for the opening.

“We’re really looking forward to opening!” seasonal employee Bettiann said (last name withheld).”It’s just a joy to see how people love to come here.”

It’s an opening day that didn’t always look likely amid pandemic and financial worries.

“It’s been a long haul,” General Manager Elvira Nedoma said.

With the business unable to open to the public in 2020, Nedoma said it struggled last year. Since it runs on volunteers and seasonal employees, Tiny Town was not eligible to receive forms of government assistance available for other businesses.

A dozen volunteers help run the five little train engines that circle the grounds, while a regular roster of eight seasonal employees keep the town running.

“They come back year after year,”

Nedoma said, herself in her 21st year at Tiny Town. “Some of them have been here longer than me!”

Eric Witulski, a seasonal employee now in his 13th season, was busy setting up the gift shop with Bettiann on a sunny afternoon last week. After missing out on a season of work, he said he was happy to be back and expecting a busy summer.

“I think everybody who lives nearby and has kids should check it out,” he said.

Tiny Town was first opened in 1915

by George Turner. Originally named Turnerville, it survived the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918.

On top of the current pandemic, Tiny Town has also had to deal with vandalism over the last few months. Someone spray-painted on the entryway. A hacker also ruined the website.

Nedoma said overall, though, public support for Tiny Town has been heartening. She set up a fundraiser to support Tiny Town through the pandemic, which raised more than $30,0000 in donations and helped pay the bills last year.

Government support Congressman Joe Neguse told attendees that combating wildfires especially as they become more prevalent requires robust partnerships at the local, state and federal levels.

He noted that wildfire preparation should not be a political issue, and he was working in Congress to get bipartisan support for programs to help states increase mitigation efforts to ward off the devastating effects of wildfires.

“Wildfire prevention, mitigation and suppression have become arguably the biggest issue … in the second congressional district,” he said, “and wildfires are going to become more pervasive in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West. … I’m grateful that the federal government is finally taking this seriously.”

The federal government needs to explore the kind of work needed to create safer conditions, so wildfires don’t put lives at risk, Neguse said, and it needs to make a significant investment in wildfire mitigation.

He noted that a bill has been introduced in Congress to create the equivalent of the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps, with participants delegated to national parks to help with fire and watershed mitigation and more, calling it a great step forward.

Dan Gibbs, executive director of Colorado Department of Natural Resources, said the state legislature was directing more money toward wildfire mitigation, calling the need for the work urgent.

Colorado Senate Bill 54 would transfer $6 million to the forest restoration and wildfire risk mitigation grant program and put $3 million into the wildfire preparedness fund.

There is also a move to bring a Nation Incident Management Team to Colorado to perform a risk assessment and to put more money in to the Colorado Youth Corps to perform more mitigation work at parks and open spaces statewide.

What can be done Residents should start preparing their homes in case of wildfire by removing anything flammable from within five feet of a home including items under decks, pine needles in gutters and more, Latham said. Then it’s time to move out to between five and 30 feet from the home, keeping grass short, and removing highly flammable shrubs and vegetation.

Once that’s done, she said, move even further from the home to about 100 feet, and remove slash, cut tree limbs about 10 feet from the ground and remove trees so there’s about 10 feet between the remaining trees at their widest.

She emphasized that hardening homes to keep embers, which can fly about a quarter of a mile ahead of a fire, from starting to burn is also important.

She also urged everyone to sign up for the CodeRED reverse emergency notification system, noting that it’s difficult to evacuate if you don’t know there’s an emergency. A go-bag should be easily accessible, and families should have an evacuation plan, so they are not caught off-guard in case of an emergency.

“Be aware that it’s up to us as residents to prepare,” she said.

Inter-Canyon Fire Chief Skip Shirlaw urged residents to help with wildfire mitigation because any help they provided helps firefighters if there’s a wildfire in the area.

Inter-Canyon, Elk Creek and Evergreen fire departments have wood-chipping programs and fuels modules, which are crews that perform mitigation on public land, and Jefferson County is starting its slash-collection program in June.

Wildfires across the West: Lessons for the Foothills As wildfires raged across the western United States, destroying homes and lives, the fires left behind a curious checkerboard of destruction.

One neighborhood was reduced to ashes and twisted metal. But houses nearby suffered little more than scorched grass and singed trees.

Many of the homes that survived had little flammable brush in the area immediately around them. But others had dry grass and shrubs within feet of the walls. Often, those are the ones that unfortunately were lost to the fire.

The difference between a surviving house and a charred hull could come down to details as small as screens over attic vents, trimmed trees or pine needles in the gutters.

Scientists have gained a whole new understanding of factors that can help a home survive a wildfire.

And it turns out that saving a house has less to do with stopping a forest fire cold or creating a nonflammable moonscape for a hundred feet in every direction. It’s more about lots of minor modifications and regular maintenance.

As wildfires grow bigger and more intense — the product of drought, disease, climate change, and buildup of flammable material from decades

of extinguishing nearly all fires — and annual federal spending on firefighting surpasses $1 billion, the new science of fireproofing has some experts asking if federal, state and local agencies should be steering more money toward making homes and communities fire resistant.

The tiny embers, or firebrands, as they are known among firefighters are often the culprits. Blown far from a wildfire by the wind, these bits of burning debris can wreak havoc if they collect in flammable spots around a house: a gutter filled with pine needles, an unscreened vent leading into an attic, or a trash can left open against a wall.

That’s different from an older belief — one often still widely held by the public — that a wildfire’s dramatic, towering flames march through a neighborhood, incinerating buildings in their path. But firebrands can shower a house that’s situated a quarter mile or more from a wildfire.

Wildfire home fire losses differ from typical residential fire losses.

Residential fires usually involve one structure with a partial loss, wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) can result in hundreds

of totally destroyed homes. Particularly during severe WUI fires, multiple homes can ignite in a very short time. The usual result is that a home either survives or is totally destroyed; only a few structures incur partial damage.

The WUI fire commonly originates in wildland fuels. During dry, windy conditions in areas with continuous fine fuels, a wildland fire can spread rapidly, outpacing the initial attack of firefighters. If residences arc nearby, a wildland fire can expose numerous homes to firebrands.

A rapidly spreading wildland fire coupled with highly ignitable homes can cause many homes to burn simultaneously.

This wildfire involving many homes can overwhelm fire protection capabilities. Severe WUI fires can destroy whole neighborhoods in a few hours. Whether a home survives depends initially on whether it ignites. Home survival begins with attention to the factors that influence ignition.

Each year more Americans move into WUI: zones, including the foothills of the Front Range, where human habitation meets forests or grasslands. Many wildfires start in such places; under the right condi-

tions, flames or embers can easily spread to nearby homes. Fortunately, there are ways to make a house in those zones less vulnerable to fire, from the choice of building materials to the landscaping decisions: 1. Improve the roof – Fire-resistant ceramic tiles, slate or composition shingles, and metal sheets provide better protection than wood.

2. Seal off openings – Put metal screens over vents and other openings to block embers.

3. Prune branches – Flames can jump from branches hanging over the roof of the house.

4. Mow the lawn – Keep grass short and well-watered to hinder the spread of flames.

5. Pick up debris – Remove leaf litter and pine needles from gutters and remove dead limbs from around the house.

6. Lighten landscaping – Spacing out trees and shrubs makes it harder for flames to travel and easier for firefighters to work.

The firefighters of your local fire district urge you to take steps toward improving fire safety in your home.

Evergreen boys lax beats defending state champs Golden It was always going to be quite a clash — the defending 4A state championship team coming up against a program on the rise with a whopping 17 seniors on the roster.

That’s perhaps why Evergreen Cougars lacrosse head coach Jay Egger had a lot to say after his senior-heavy squad beat the Golden Demons 11-5 on May 12.

“This group, they’ve been building towards this,” Eggers said. “This year they want that banner and that ring more than ever before, so there’s one purpose, one direction, and that’s to be the best in the state.”

The May 12 game, which was the second of the season for Evergreen and the third for Golden, started out tight. The home-team Cougars were first out of the gate with two scores in the first quarter, including a bullet from senior attacker Ben Crosbie at the 4 minute mark to make it 2-0.

But Golden came right back, tying it up at 2-2. First senior Chance MacCagnon scored from the top of the attack area. Followed a minute later by junior team captain Dalton Summers, who received a nice pass

right in front of Evergreen’s goal and one in.

The second quarter, however, is where Evergreen pulled away. Senior defenseman Danny Schneider set the tone early, with a quick runand-gun score in the first 30 seconds.

It only got worse from there for Golden. The Demons failed to capitalize on a man-up situation, only to give up another goal right afterwards, (a patient Crosby with the assist to junior Connor Dries) to fall behind 4-2.

The Demons would end up getting shut out the entire second quarter, as Evergreen’s senior goalie Andrew Morris stopped quite a few shots that came his way.

“We beat Golden in every facet of the game,” Coach Egger said after the game. “We’re proud of that against the defending state champs.”

After the Cougars racked up six unanswered goals, Golden finally got one by the goalie halfway through the third quarter, when Chase Marini got a long distance shot into the net.

The score was 8-4 going into the final quarter. Golden got an early man-up situation, but MacCagnon’s set-up shot went just wide.

into a goal.

Down the stretch, MacCagnon would get one more goal to bring his team within 5, but a nice assist pass from Evergreen’s Crosbie to Nate Park would end up being the final score of the game, 11-5.

“We’re a real young team still and not used to a big game like this, and that’s a big Evergreen team,” Golden head coach Mike Thumim said.

“Good news is we get them later in the year,” Thumim said. “And I’m

thinking that’ll be for the (Jeffco 4A) conference championship.”

The Golden squad regrouped from the loss with a big win against conference opponent Denver South last week. The Demons travel to Conifer on the 21st, and will host Air Academy on the 24th.

Evergreen plays Thompson Valley and Air Academy this week. The Cougars’ next home game will be 7:30 p.m. May 26 against Bear Creek.

The project’s timeline is rushed because the nonprofit’s two major donors — the Daniels Fund and the El Pomar Foundation — expect the field to be completed this summer.

EPRD Executive Director Ellen O’Connor said once the rec district and Wetzels are sure the Stagecoach Project will go through, the rec district will host a community meeting to provide details about the project.

Officials want to answer questions for both neighbors and the community.

A plan to put artificial turf on the lacrosse field at Stagecoach Park has moved a step closer when the Evergreen Park & Recreation District board unanimously agreed to accept the money from a nonprofit to fund the work.

The board on May 10 accepted the donation from the Teddy Wetzel Memorial Field Project, which moves the project along from EPRD’s end, though Scot and Charlotte Wetzel of Evergreen, who are spearheading the project, still must check with project funders and more to move forward.

“We have a ways to run before we can make this happen,” EPRD board President Peter Lindquist said.

The EPRD board put several caveats on accepting the money: All installation costs are covered by the donation, the funds are provided to the rec district before the work starts, that construction follows EPRD guidelines and requirements, any remaining funds from the donation are contributed to a replacement fund, all permits are obtained, and the district and the Wetzel family come to an agreement on the reserve account to replace the field.

The Wetzels told the EPRD board at its April 27 meeting that they originally wanted to turn a gravel field off of Buffalo Park Road between Evergreen High School and Wilmot Elementary School into an artificial turf field. Kids eat free this summer in Jeffco What to know and where to go for school grub STAFF REPORT

Summer break is almost here. For many Jeffco families, food insecurity can make it a stressful time.

This summer, free breakfast and lunch will be served at 16 Jeffco school locations to community youth ages 1-18, regardless of enrollment status.

JSEL locations Ten of those locations will provide

meals to JSEL (Jeffco Summer of Early Learning) students and community youth. Nearby locations include: Bear Creek K - 8 Foothills Elementary *West Jefferson Elementary JSEL students will be able to eat on-site Monday - Friday, with breakfast being served at 8 a.m., lunch from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and weekend meals provided each Friday.

Community youth (not enrolled in JSEL) will be able to pick up Grab-n-Go meals Monday-Friday from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Lunch and next day breakfast will be provided, with weekend meals given out each

Friday.

The JSEL partner schools will be serving summer meals from June 7 July 16 (except Monday, July 5).

Curbside Grab-n-Go locations The other six schools will be open as curbside Grab-n-Go sites for all children in the community. These schools include: Green Mountain High School Summit Ridge Middle School *West Jefferson Elementary (JSEL and G-n-G location) The community Grab-n-Go school locations will offer meals Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. -1 p.m.

Three- and four-day meal packs will

be provided. These sites will operate from June 1-July 30 (Tuesdays and Thursdays).

After surviving what’s arguably been the strangest school year in modern history, this year’s summer learning options will be a bit different as well.

Asked about the District’s plans for summer, Cameron Bell, Jeffco’s public information officer, said

currently, plans are on a school-byschool basis.

The district’s website says, “Summer school options are varied and structured to meet different needs at different locations; some are academic while others are enrichmentbased.”

Parents are encouraged to reach out to a principal, secretary, counselor or teacher to find out if there is summer programming at their child’s school or nearby.

Some elementary schools will offer summer school for students who attend that school.

For students in high school who need credit recovery, there will be

regional options that will operate on an in-person hybrid model. There will also be a virtual option open to high school students from all regions.

North: A north area high school credit recovery program will be offered at Arvada West High School June 7-July 16. Registration is open through May 28, with an orientation scheduled for June 7.

South: Two south area summer sessions are offered at Columbine High School. Session one will run from June 1-24, with orientation scheduled for June 1. Session two will run from July 12-30, with orientation scheduled for July 12.

Registration for both south sessions is open through May 28.

Central: Central area students can attend a credit recovery session at Wheat Ridge High School. The program will run from June 1-24, with orientation June 1. Online registration for the Central session will be open through May 31.

Mountain: Mountain area students will be offered a credit recovery session at Conifer High School, running from June 1-24, with orientation scheduled for June 1. Online registration for the Mountain session is open through May 28.

Samantha Smith Conifer High School Tell us a little about your high school career: Clubs, sports, activities and things you participated in during high school.

Throughout high school I was an avid member in the media programs, especially yearbook. I spent the past four years going to every sports game that I could to not only take pictures and report on games, but to cheer on my friends in their games.

In my junior year, I was able to go to Washington D.C with a few of my closest friends and explore the capital while learning from some of the best known journalists in the country. In my senior year I was awarded a third place award for

a graduation photo I took and I also got an award of excellence for a piece of writing I did in a national contest.

What are your plans after graduation?

Smith I’m going to The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and plan to study Journalism. Go Big Red!!

What memorable moment during the pandemic instilled a key value in you?

Back when it first started, March 2020, we still have 20+ pages to submit for the yearbook so my teacher, Leslie Thompson, and I worked our butts off to finish them before we left school for our “extra long”

spring break. This taught me that even if it’s a lot of hard work, anything can be done.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

Hopeful. Open minded. Rosy What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

I feel like our class is filled with a bunch of brainiacs, so I think our “mission to better the world” is just to use our knowledge to help make the world a better place.

I think as a class we can use the things we’ve learned at Conifer to help those around us, whether that be at Stanford or down in Denver.

Joshua Wright Conifer High School Tell us a little about your high school career: Clubs, sports, activities and things you participated in during high school.

I was in marching band my freshman through junior year. I was signed up for marching band this past year, but it was obviously canceled. I was in NHS junior and senior year. I also participated in winter percussion at Evergreen High School sophomore through senior year.

What are your plans after graduation?

I’m going to study aerospace engineering at CU Boulder.

What memorable moment during the pandemic instilled a key value Wright in you?

After we stayed home for two weeks of and nothing was opening up, I realized how much I had been taking for granted. It was then that I really knew I needed to be grateful for everything that

have and am able to do.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

Grateful, optimistic, and excited.

What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

Space exploration seems like it is becoming a large focus across the world, and especially in the U.S., again, so I believe that my class has a good opportunity to contribute to the advancements being made in that field.

Ruairi Brown Evergreen High School Tell us a little about your high school career: Clubs, sports, activities and things you participated in during high school.

Last summer I earned my Private Pilot’s Certificate. I am the Founder and President of the Society of Women Engineers Next Club at EHS, where we invite female engineers to speak in order to promote women in engineering. I was fortunate to be an Executive Intern at Lockheed Martin this semester, where I collaborated with other students to develop a computer aided design for a multi-tool prototype that could be utilized to refuel a satellite in low earth orbit. I played Varsity Volleyball my Junior Year and was also Academic All State. I am very involved in EHS’ Performing Arts Program. I have enjoyed singing in EHS’ Choir for four years and was selected to be part of Choral Images this year. I was also part of Curtains and Guys and Dolls.

What memorable moment during the pandemic instilled a key value in you?

During the pandemic, one of my family members was immunocompromised, so my family severely limited our interactions with other people. I was fortunate enough that my father and one other flight instructor had time to teach me how to fly. Working on my Pilot’s Certificate while being isolated taught me that achieving a difficult goal requires drive, determination, and singular focus. On the

final landing of my practical examination for my Private Pilot’s Certificate, the examiner congratulated me for earning my certificate. That moment made all of the hard work worthwhile.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

I am optimistic about the potential for future scientific and medical discoveries that will positively impact the world. I am intellectually curious about how the combination of science, technology, art, and history will lead to advancements for the human race. I am driven to learn all that I can and use that knowledge to make some small contribution that will benefit humanity.

What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

Our mission to better the world should start with advancements in science to become better stewards of the planet and reverse climate change. I believe that with genuine effort, this is well within our generation’s grasp.

Ryan Gale Evergreen High School Tell us a little about your high school career: Clubs, sports, activities and things you participated in during high school.

Throughout high school I played soccer, ran track, participated in Key Club, National Honor Society, and Foosball Club.

I also interned as a Park Ranger for Jeffco Open Space and continued to volunteer as a Park Patroller for JCOS. What are your plans after graduation?

Montana State University, Double Major in Snow Science and Applied Mathematics What memorable moment during the pandemic instilled a key value in you?

Earlier this year, I hit a Pandemic Wall with all the zoom meetings, online school, online clubs, online everything. I never

thought I would have difficulty pushing through each day, each assignment, each session on the computer, but there I was. The most memorable moment for me was when Jeffco decided we could Gale return to in-person learning.

From that point on I rebuilt my interest in learning, my ability to focus through adversity, and my goals for the future. I learned that, at my core, I am not necessarily indestructible, but I am definitely strong, resilient, and self-aware.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

Determined, wiser, optimistic.

What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

Based on the colleges and degrees my

classmates have posted, I think my graduating class hopes to make the world a better place by finding roles that contribute directly to helping others. My classmates are heading towards nursing, education, environmental, and engineering programs. For my part, I plan to attend Montana State University and earn a degree in Snow Science and Applied Mathematics.

Although snow covers a small portion of the Earth, it impacts climate, weather, ecology, water use, wildlife, and people. As we saw in last summer’s wildfires, water resources are critical to our community.

The more we understand our snowpack and snow accumulation, the more strategically we can design manage water use throughout the Rockies. I believe Snow Science will be on the leading edge of climate science and solving issues across communities, and I hope to be a part of that journey.

Camden Steber Evergreen High School Tell us a little about your high school career: Clubs, sports, activities and things you participated in during high school.

I participated in the the Engineering Club at school to help the look at different aspects of engineering and help understand it in the day to day lives of everyone. I also enjoyed chess club, eventually leaving due to the teachers inability to continue the club.

I worked hard at my job to make some money for post-secondary endeavors.

Most nights I would try to work to keep saving up for college. While not working, I liked to play basketball with a club team in Lakewood, playing with Gold Crown Basketball just to improve my abilities and have fun. I also participated in my local youth group with my church.

We did many community service events and activities that always helped to provide for the community. I was admitted to the National Honors Society and provided volunteer hours for the betterment of our community.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to pursue further education at the Colorado School of Mines in the Fall. I plan to go into either Chemical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering.

While at Mines, I also plan to become a certified EMT, as I am a certified EMR provider (Emergency Medical Responder)

and would love to learn more about the work they do and even gain some of the skills they have. After Mines, I plan to pursue Medical School, and going in for Anesthesiology. I hope to join the medical field one day.

What memorable moment during the pandemic instilled a key value in you?

Understanding and respect. Working at a grocery store throughout the pandemic, I saw many different people come in to buy different things. Each person I checked out all had different items, and some payed different ways. Some had cash, others had credit cards, some wrote checks, others had food stamps.

However, throughout the pandemic, I saw as more and more people begin to use government assistance than ever.

Normal people also began to have most if not all of their social interactions with the people at the grocery store. I began to try to bring in people and learn about them. I tried to understand what hardships they may have gone through.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

Ambitious, sensible, and empathetic.

I choose ambitious as I believe that we should always strive to live the best life possible and always works towards a better tomorrow. We should never be afraid of what may happen and must always

be ambitious and work towards our own success.

Sensible, as moving forward I must try to look at life and things in a more realistic manner and take into account all sides of the problem and be a more rational thinker.

The last one, and most important one, is empathetic. The trait of empathy and the ability to be empathetic are very important. Moving forward, being empathetic will help me to connect and work with others. I hope to instill this in my day to day life.

What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

It should be to promote unity between people and embrace the people that they are surrounded by. Our world today has become so divided and individualistic.

Everyone has turned to their phones and devices, finding solace in apps that were originally made to connect people. So much of our world has moved onto these platforms and forgotten about the natural world around them. We no longer talk as we once did as a species.

I believe that we can do better. We can reconnect with one another. We can try to understand one another and talk rationally together. We as Coloradans should know just how beautiful the world is. Surrounded by nature brimming with life and beauty, we have so much to love. Put down your phone, go outside.

were going back in person, it brought me back to life and now I am graduating high school and have a set path down the road.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

Motivation, kindness, and gratitude.

What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

To help ourselves and others succeed.

Duncan Emmons Clear Creek High School Tell us a little about your high school career: Clubs, sports, activities and things you participated in during high school.

I have played football in 9th and 10th grade, basketball 9th through 11th grade, track and field 9th through 11th grade (got cut off by Covid), and participated in the Fall Plays 10th through 12th grade.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to go to University of Wyoming, where I will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Theater.

What memorable moment during the pandemic instilled a key value in you?

During the first month of quarantine I remember missing seeing people, and be able to socialize and live the way that I had before quarantine. During this time I realized that I Emmons had continually undervalued other people and the joy I get from connecting with them.

This realization pushed me through quarantine with the goal of being able to take full advantage of seeing other people again, and enjoying my last year in high school. The stress and disconnection from quarantine made me value every time I am able to see another person, and view every occasion to be social as a prize that has been earned.

What three adjectives describe your outlook going forward?

Positive, hopeful, and determined.

What do you see as your graduating class’ mission to better the world?

I see my senior class’s mission as spreading awareness and making the United States more progressive, forward thinking and inclusive, especially with the LGBTQ community. A big movement this year within our school was the Black Lives Matter movement, where in each class we had discussions and spread awareness of the struggles that ethnic people suffer everyday. Those discussions pushed myself, and likely many others to join the movement, and support the peaceful protests and petitions.

I’ve been in the Young Rotarians club since sophomore year and my senior year I became the president. We would organize social events for the community along with fundraisers and donating clothes and necessity items to the homeless community. I’ve also participated in planning events with student government and working

No camping in Maxwell Falls Maxwell Falls is now closed to camping for five years while the U.S. Forest Service explores better ways to manage the popular outdoor recreation area.

The Forest Service has designated this area as day-use only, so it is now prohibited to camp, have a campfire or be in the Maxwell Falls area between sundown and sunrise.

“This area draws campers and late-night partiers who have campfires that are often left unextinguished,” according to a news release. “The proximity of residential neighborhoods at the top of the canyon walls and nearby put these communities at great risk of being impacted by an escaped campfire from below.”

The release says campsites have negatively impacted waterways, and people leave trash and human waste in the park.

Beaver Ranch improvements The Jeffco Planning Commission has approved Jefferson County Open Space’s plans for improvements at Beaver Ranch Park on Foxton Road in Conifer.

The improvements will take place on seven acres of the 445-acre park and must be reviewed by the Planning Commission as part of the “location and extents” process. This process allows Jeffco to review plans on public property.

Beaver Ranch’s trail system will more than double in length from 3.2 to 7.4 miles this summer, and next year, the trailhead and parking lot will be reconfigured. In addition, the disc golf course, zip line and dog park will be centrally located near the trailhead.

The planning commissioners unanimously approved the park plans with no comment on May 12.

Hilldale Pines gets $500 grant The Inter-Canyon Fire board will give a $500 grant to the Hilldale Pines neighborhood for fire mitigation work that will be done on adjacent property in the Elk Creek Fire District.

The board on May 12 unanimously voted to award the grant and review its guidelines since the proposal was out of the ordinary.

According to Fire Capt. John Mandl, residents have become enthusiastic about wildfire mitigation, and property owners west of the area have agreed to create a fire break. While the properties are not in the Inter-Canyon Fire District, board members agreed that creating the fire break would benefit constituents in the district.

Fire Chief Skip Shirlaw said the spirit of the grants was being upheld.

“I do have to applaud residents for looking for any avenue to get work done,” Shirlaw told the board. “It would be a great problem to have if we were inundated with these requests” because more residents would be involved in fire mitigation.

Board President Mike Swenson said if the $500 can help spur enthusiasm for getting wildfire mitigation done, it was a good investment by the department.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN pursuant to Section 32-1-207(3)(b), C.R.S., that RRC Metropolitan District Nos. 1, 2 and 3 (collectively, the “Districts”), Jefferson County, Colorado, intend to undertake certain actions described herein: On September 6, 2016, the Town Council for the Town of Morrison, Colorado (the “Town”) approved the Service Plans (the “Service Plans”) for the Districts. The Districts were organized pursuant to Orders and Decrees of the District Court of Jefferson County, Colorado (the “District Court”) recorded on December 1, 2016.

The Districts were organized to provide services and facilities for the development of a commercial and residential project known as Red Rocks Centre (the “Project”). The Service Plans for the Districts anticipated that the residential portion of the Project would be disconnected from the Town.

The disconnection of the entire Project, including both the residential and commercial parcels, has occurred and accordingly, the Project is now located solely within the boundaries of Jefferson County, Colorado (the “County”).

It is in the best interests of each District and its constituents to modify each respective Service Plan to replace references to the Town with the County and to delete all references to the City of Lakewood. Such modification is not of a basic or essential nature and it was contemplated that such disconnection from the Town would occur at the time of the approval of the Service Plans. Since such modification is not of a basic or essential nature, adoption and implementation of NonMaterial Modification to Service Plans for each of the Districts do not require formal approval of the County or the Town.

The Districts believe the actions described above are in the best interest of the Districts, their residents and taxpayers. The Districts have conferred with the Town and the County regarding the content of this Notice prior to its publication and delivery. Accordingly, the Districts have determined to provide this Notice pursuant to Section 32-1-207(3)(b), C.R.S. Pursuant to Colorado law, any action to enjoin the proposed activities as a material departure from the Service Plans of the Districts must be commenced within forty-five (45) days from the date of this publication (May 19, 2021).
