Saturday was an egg-cellent day to gather Easter eggs.

Though not the traditional egg hunts — this year in drive-thru mode — families attended area events to provide some Easter fun for their children.

The Friends of the Bailey Library, for example, planned its drive-thru event to have something fun for families after last year’s hunt was canceled. And while Aspen Ridge

Church’s MOPS group had planned a more traditional hunt this year, the melted snow turned the areas into mud. Hence, its drive-thru event.

“Anything for kids is my philosophy,” said Kirk Crawford, a Bailey volunteer. “In a small community, there’s not a lot for kids to do.”

OBITUARIES REED

SMITH

Charles Edwin Reed Chuck was born into the throat of the Great Depression on March 3, 1930, in a tiny farm town named Kersey east of Greeley, Colorado.

While just a toddler, his family traded their farm on Colorado’s plains for vacation cabins in Estes Park and moved there. The Reed Cottages in Estes Park were a fixture for vacationers from all over the world for many years. Chuck helped his parents, Otto and Agnes Reed, and brother, Irv, with that business including cleaning the cabins, cutting firewood and shoveling coal for the cabins’ stoves, and guiding vacationers on fishing and hiking trips in nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. As Chuck grew up in Estes, he became legendary for his athletic ability, work ethic and his prankster tendencies. He was an expert skier, a skill that he honed at the local ski hill in Estes and later taught his sons. He was an accomplished quarterback and track athlete for Estes Park High School and worked at Preston’s Garage in Estes from age 14. With money saved from that job as well as a track scholarship—he held records in pole vaulting for many years—he attended Bethany College in Kansas and later completed his degree in optometry at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon.

After receiving his degree, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, an experience that he spoke of proudly in his later years, and spent his time as an eye doctor at the Heidelberg U.S. Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, the same hospital where legendary U.S. Army General George Patton died only a few years earlier.

After his military service, Chuck Reed came back to his home state and started a very successful optometry practice on South Broadway in Denver.

He and his wife moved into their home on Lookout Mountain next to Denver Mountain Parks’ “Buffalo Pasture” and lived there until his death. He commuted every weekday and Saturdays to his practice in Denver.

They had two sons, Charles Irwin, and Thomas Edwin, who were raised in that home and ran wild on Lookout Mountain and in the surrounding forests.

Chuck was an uncommonly kind and generous man who was well known for small acts of kindness. After his retirement, Chuck made shrewd real estate investments in Denver and kept active as a business owner. He was also an expert carpenter who made wonderful furniture from fly-tying benches to tables. He loved to laugh with his friends and he and “Virg” were fast friends with other “mountain folk” such as Harvey and Helen Waters who lived in South Deer Creek Canyon west of Littleton. Chuck loved dogs, from his first dog, Spot, to his last one, Toby, a Great Dane-Lab mix that he called his “best dog ever.”

As one might expect, by achieving the ripe age of 91, Chuck outlived almost all of his friends except his best friend, Lee Parker, who still lives on his ranch outside Wheatland, Wyoming. Other survivors include his beloved wife of more than 62 years, Virginia; his sons Chuck, of Golden, Colorado, and Tom of Harrison, Montana; his daughter-in-law Shauna Stephenson of Harrison, Montana, granddaughter Clara and grandson Otto; and “mock daughters” Cherie Waters Braun of Conifer and Nancy Waters Hammans of Loveland. Charles McKay Madison Born in Washington State, in 1939, Charles was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. A devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Teri Aileen LaJoie. Charles, better known as “Chuck”, was a member of the Air Force National Reserve in Van Nuys, CA, graduated with a degree in Animal Husbandry from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA, worked for the National Forest service, and went on to work in the refrigeration, air conditioning, oil, and gas industry. He was an independent association coordinator who helped head up many companies throughout Colorado. He was always willing to reach out and help others. He would annually coordinate a team to go out through Colorado to fix the heating/ air conditioning/refrigeration systems of homeowners who could not afford such services, otherwise. He loved the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. From a young age, his goals, dreams, ambitions, and aspirations revolved around ownership of his own piece of land in the mountains of Colorado. He spent his time off camping, hiking, kayaking, and fishing. He was always working on different projects around his mountain home to make

it into a mountain oasis for his family—whether it was building a rock wall by hand around the property, reconfiguring the inside of his home, building a car port from scratch—everything was dreamed up, designed and built by him. He was an active member of his Kiwanis club, weekly bible study, and active in his church.

Father to his two daughters, Ashley, and Whitney, he was always guiding, directing, often redirecting--but always loving, and encouraging guidance through prayer and faith. He was the same with his grandchildren. A devout Christian, Chuck always had a heart for the Lord, and would emulate, and try to convey the love of Christ to anyone who would listen. He was always content in accepting that this life is a mere stepping stone in the grand scheme of God’s plan for man. He was welcomed home by the Lord on March 17th, 2021. He leaves behind two daughters, Ashley and Whitney, five grandchildren, Paige, Beau, Tristan, Emma, and Chloe, and two great grandchildren, Piper, and Charlie.

Robert Paul Smith 12/24/1927 - 3/27/2021

Robert Paul Smith, 93 of Evergreen, Colorado went home to be with Jesus on March 27, 2021. Bob was born on December 24, 1927, in Fort Madison, Iowa and played along the banks of the Mississippi River as a young boy. Both of his parents died when Bob was 12.

Relatives from Ada, Minnesota came to pick up the siblings, Bert, Mabel & Bob, in their wide flat-bed pick-up truck. With furniture piled high on the truck and Mabel in the cab, Bob & Bert rode on top of the load all the way from their home in Iowa to northwestern Minnesota and the farming community of Ada. After serving in the Army in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper, Bob returned to Ada. Bob did odd jobs including painting the very steep steeple of a church. Slipping on wet paint, Bob fell 25 feet off the roof, landed on his back and was hospitalized for 8 weeks. As fate would have it, the nurse that took care of him was Ardella Fetting, who would soon become the one and only love of his life for 63 years.

The young couple moved to Chicago and were married in 1950. Bob pursued a career in electronics and television. In 1952 television had just come to Denver. Bob and Ardella decided to move west, loved the mountains, wanted to ski and ended up settling in Evergreen. After years of working in the television industry, doing everything from studio camera work to filming live broadcasts from atop Shipwreck Rock at Red Rocks, Bob moved to the aerospace industry and the Titan missile program. Working for Martin Marietta, Bob was responsible for the Titan missile self-destruct relays. Launch day was very tense around the house. The missiles were not very reliable in those days and if the launch did not go as planned you just might be out of a job the next day. In 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson stopped funding for the aerospace industry and Martin Marietta became a ghost town.

The entire family were avid skiers. In those days ski equipment was terrible, and the slopes were a

landmine of fallen trees, stumps, rocks and ditches. Falling was a very frequent event that happened multiple times each run. Goggle and eyeglasses fogging was a real and constant problem. While watching a ski movie with a Martin buddy, Bob said “Someone should invent a goggle that does not fog!” His buddy said “Yes, why don’t you?” With those words, Super Seer was born in 1967.

Bob, the engineer, remembered those cold below zero winter days in Minnesota and the double pane windows on the houses that kept out the cold.

They didn’t fog! Bob used the concept to design, build, and patent the ski industry’s first double lens goggle. Several business acquisitions and over 50 years later, Super Seer has become the major legacy supplier for domestic and international Law Enforcement customers.

Bob just recently retired at 92 years young. He loved his customers and loved to travel. Dining out was a favorite pastime. Within the Law Enforcement community, Super Seer was invited to participate in Police Motorcycle training events.

He became fondly known by all as “Mr. Bob”. Mr. Bob was honored with the industry’s first HarleyDavidson gas tank and motorcycle fairing signed personally by Police Motor Officers from across the country as a tribute to his support and involvement with Motor Officers. Currently, Super Seer is still a family business with the second and third generation at the helm.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ardella, his brother Bert Smith, and sister Mabel Hagen. He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Smith (Tim Sell), and his son, Steve Smith (Joan).

He has five grandchildren Kevin Smith (Stacy), Crystal Dulger-Sheiken, (Nick), Kendra Stooke (Jake), Sara Smith Sell, Sean Smith- Sell. He has eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Olinger Crown Hill at the Pavilion of Reflection on April 12, 2021 at 1:30 p.m.

Thomas Wayne Ludwig 1/18/1950 - 3/26/2021

On Friday, March 26, 2021, Thomas Wayne Ludwig, loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 71.

Tom was born on January 18, 1950 in Bloomington, IL to Ruby Marie (nee, Winterroth) and Donald Raddis. He lost his father to cancer early into his childhood. Ruby remarried to Arnold “Bud” Ludwig who adopted Tom and his twin, Mike. The family expanded in Eagle River, Wisconsin. On August 12, 1982, Tom married Starr Michelle Larson. They had two sons Hoshi and Tai, and eventually settled in Evergreen, Colorado.

Tom had a passion for the outdoors. He was a regular on the trails at Elk Meadow and Three Sisters park saying “howdy” to strangers. He climbed many of the Colorado fourteeners with his friends and family. He took regular fishing trips to Canada with his two sons and siblings.

He loved Hawaii and hiked the Kalalau Trail in Kauai with his wife. He loved a good road trip, an ice cold beer, a root beer float and classic rock. In

2010, Tom took a job with the US Forrest Service Department of Agriculture at Mt. Evans, his favorite job. He was known for his tenacious work ethic, dedication to his family, acceptance of everyone, constant gratitude, generosity and care for others. To know him was to love him.

Tom is survived by: his wife Starr Larson of Evergreen; his two children Hoshi Ludwig (Savannah Todd) of Brooklyn, NY, and Tai Ludwig (Jill Patterson) of Denver, CO; his siblings Tim, Janet, Marlee, Karin, Joey, Mary Jo; many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten. He is reunited with his dog Striker and is preceded by: his father Don; his brother Mike; his mother Ruby; and his stepfather Bud. A funeral service and hike will be planned for a later date at Alderfer / Three Sisters Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association to help with Dementia Research (alz.org).

EPRD open to expanding senior programming Those programs could help fill the gap as the Yellow House closes

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District will consider adding more programming for senior citizens with the help of a soon-to-be-created nonprofit now that the Seniors’ Resource Center in Evergreen is closing permanently.

“Now the need is clear. There was a place, and now it is no longer there,” EPRD board President Peter Lindquist said of the SRC site, known as the Yellow House, closing. “It creates a bit more urgency for the community that would be interested in providing (senior programming). (EPRD is) a community entity, and our mission is certainly primarily recreation, but we also have some other resources that can be brought to bear on other needs that are not directly associated but are important to the community.”

The rec district already offers some senior programming such as Silver Sneakers and more, and it would be open to adding more if there was space available and an agreement could be worked out with a nonprofit called Seniors4Wellness

Ventimiglia hopes that in addition to the programming the district already provides, there could be social, nutritional and educational programs.

EPRD Executive Director Ellen O’Connor said nothing was completely set yet, and EPRD would move forward, especially with the Yellow House closing permanently.

In December, Ventimiglia, who helped provide transportation for the Yellow House until 2018, asked whether EPRD would consider stepping in, offering scaled-down programs though not necessarily a full day-care program.

“I am looking to attempt to build a model that would include grants, donations, sponsorships and community involvement,” Ventimiglia said in December. “If you go to the community, you would have agreement that there is dire need for a senior center in the mountain community.”

SRC officials are closing the Yellow House to focus more on in-home care for seniors. In addition, the Yellow House building because of its age is expensive to operate, so it will be sold. The SRC laid off all Yellow House employees a year ago because of the pandemic.

Plans are moving along to improve Highway 73 from Buffalo Park Road to Plettner Lane near downtown Evergreen, though it appears construction will begin later in 2022 than originally thought.

That’s because the project is being reviewed to determine if there is any historical significance to features along the highway, and Steve Durian, Jeffco’s transportation and engineering director, said a dry-stack wall on the west side of the road has been determined to be historically valuable.

The wall, he said, was built during the Great Depression years, so it likely will have to stay, entailing changes to some of the sidewalk plans.

The design will widen a halfmile of the road to include a center left-turn lane, a southbound bike lane on the west side and a shared-use path on the east side.

It will also provide four parking lots: angled parking across from the former church, parallel parking in front of that building, angle parking across from Evergreen Fire/Rescue Station 1 and parallel parking south of the Highway 73/74 intersection.

also will be improved.

The county has federal funding for the project, with construction expected to start in the fall of 2022 and taking about a year to complete.

Durian has said the underlying reason for improving the highway is to better facilitate evacuations in an emergency, with last year’s Elephant Butte Fire being a prime example. People were evacuated from Buffalo Park Road, and Highway 73 should be able to accommodate more cars.

State-of-the-art rec center proposed in Conifer Two local families want to build a private state-of-the-art recreation center on U.S. 285 across from Mountain High Chapel.

The developers, Chris and Georgina Lewis and Ken and Amy Holtschlag, want to hold a meeting for the community at 6 p.m. April 14 to explain their proposal. They are still in the pre-application phase with Jefferson County Planning & Zoning, so the April 14 meeting will be informal before the community meeting required by the county.

Lewis. The families propose having a turf field for lacrosse, soccer and other sports; an ice rink; tennis courts; pickleball courts; a fitness room; climbing walls; a pump track; and more.

According to the website, MECCollective.com, the project would be fully funded by private funds, and no tax dollars or grants would be used for the project. It says a recreation facility is suggested by the Jeffco Comprehensive Master Plan for the area, and the developers hope it would open in fall 2022.

The website provides details about the proposal and asks for community feedback. It will have the Zoom link for the April 14 meeting soon.

Sheriff’s calls Nanny-scam CONIFER — Seeking work as a nanny, Mary posted her nurturing bona fides online and got a quick response from Mr. Banks. Purportedly a decorated officer in the U.S. Army and saddled with a drunken and inattentive wife, Mr. Banks said he’d only require Mary’s services three days a week and the “occasional weekend.” Mr. Banks further promised Mary her own room, free and unrestricted use of a vehicle, and a handsome signing bonus that she could keep even if she decided not to take the position. That sounded splendid to Mary, who eagerly sent along a fair amount of personal information and documents attesting to her squeaky-clean driving and criminal histories. Assuring Mary that she was just the woman to mould his young breed, Mr. Banks sent Mary a large check, instructing her to cash it at once, retain her first week’s wages, and wire the hefty cash balance to the unspecified “guardian” who manages his small

estate. Mary did as she was told and shortly received a call from her financial institution informing her that Mr. Banks’ check had bounced, and she was on the hook for a tidy sum. Too late, Mary researched Mr. Banks online and discovered numerous posts exposing Mr. Banks as a scam artist. Still too late, Mary told her sad tale to JCSO’s buncobusters who said they’d do their best to bust Banks.

Pile driver SOUTH TURKEY CREEK — Somewhere within the dim chambers beneath the JCSO building in Golden is a fat file folder bulging with all the shabby details of Ms. Swift’s and Mr. West’s three-year feud. On the morning of March 11, that folder got a little bit fatter when Ms. Swift called to complain that Mr. West had all but buried her mailbox. According to Ms. Swift, that miserable bag of snakes, Mr. West had just plowed all the snow in his driveway into one big pile

directly in front of her mail receptacle. Looking into the complaint, deputies first noted the giant mound of winter woe preventing postal access to Ms. Swift’s mailbox and then took stock of the vast empty spaces on either side of it that could easily accommodate Mr. West’s surplus snow, and then dropped by Mr. West’s house to find out why Ms. Swift couldn’t fetch her letters.

Mr. West admitted piling his plowings into the post-impeding pile but denied doing it to torment Ms. Swift. Officers issued Mr. West both a summons for being a nuisance and a warning to put his provocative plowings anyplace but in front of Ms. Swift’s mailbox.

Point of no return EVERGREEN — Trolling the aisles on the afternoon of March 10, the pair had no intention of leaving any money at the store but every hope of leaving with some.

One by one, Bonnie and Clyde removed nearly a dozen items from

the shelves and presented them at the checkout counter for a “refund.”

Merchandise turned in for instant cash reimbursement included motor oil, engine cleaner, valve protectant, Capri pants, a lady’s V-neck sweater and a men’s leather jacket. The fatal flaw in the couple’s crooked scheme was that they didn’t have receipts for any of it, and when it became clear that the store wasn’t going to buy back their own goods, Bonnie snatched a Dewalt screw gun and battery set from its display, and the pair took a powder. Armed with ample surveillance evidence and a license plate number, JCSO deputies apprehended the desperate duo in Bergen Park, listened politely as they denied everything, and then arrested them for theft. As it happened, the officers could just as easily arrested Bonnie and Clyde on any one of several felony warrants that were dogging them at the time, or for the respectable cache of heroine paraphernalia they found stuffed under the front seat.

Painting for the people Art is in Evergreen’s Tom and Carol Newsom’s blood

It is likely that most residents here unknowingly have some of Carol and Tom Newsom’s artwork in their homes.

If by some odd chance their art isn’t in your home, then you’ve seen it around Evergreen — on business windows, on posters advertising summer events and more.

The Newsoms are integral to the Evergreen arts scene, embedding themselves in everything artistic since moving here in 2005. They are artistic professionals to the core, each putting in 50 years as painters.

Among other things, Carol, 72, has been a children’s book illustrator for decades, while Tom, 77, has designed the artwork for food companies and is well known for his Santa Claus cards, paintings and even jigsaw puzzles.

“They are both so talented that it does not take a lot of angst to finish any piece unlike many inexperienced artists,” said Beth Riser, owner of the Evergreen Gallery.

“The Newsoms just do it methodically. I’ve been to their studio with works in progress, and it’s a recipe to them.”

Art is in their blood — and their sons, Andy, 46, and Philip 43, are artists, too. In fact, Philip designed

The couple converted their garage into their art studio, split in half so Tom has space “for his junk” and Carol has space “for her junk,” as Carol puts it. The walls are lined with their creations, their art library and copies of books they have illustrated.

They open their studio most years during the annual Open Door Studios tour of home studios — called a highlight of the tour for experienced and new artists along with art lovers.

physically and artistically,” Riser said. “She’s always painting with an incredibly unique vision.”

She’s been teaching painting classes via Zoom for Center for the Arts Evergreen, and she also paints commissioned pieces and fine art.

“Carol is a talented artist and a wonderful teacher for Center for the Arts,” said CAE’s marketing director Sara Miller. “Her students always comment on Carol’s teaching style — they learn while having fun. She is so adaptable and always coming up with new classes that meet the needs of her students. We’re thrilled that Carol has gifted CAE with her talents and easy-going personality.”

Carol has designed several posters over the years for the Evergreen Music Festival and the Evergreen Fine Arts Festival. She also participates in the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Show at CAE. When she isn’t creating art or teaching, she is an avid bicyclist and skier, and avid doesn’t begin to describe it. In the art studio are dozens of medals she has won in racing events.

Tom Tom, who went to college to be an aerospace engineer, worked summers at that time drawing portraits at the Six Flags theme park outside Arlington, Texas. He decided to get an art degree instead and began his career as a book illustrator.

About 30 years ago, he was asked to create a Santa-themed painting in a more traditional, Norman Rockwell-esque style. He enjoyed it so much, he continues to this day. He uses the gouache painting style, which is similar to an opaque watercolor.

Tom even has a full Santa suit, so he can be his own model, and there’s a Santa hat hanging from his easel.

He creates art for companies — Celestial Seasonings tea boxes, Little Debbie holiday snack boxes and Costco Christmas cookie tins — in addition to Christmas cards and Christmas jigsaw puzzles. He also paints landscapes and fine-art pieces.

There’s a model of the Millennium Falcon from “Star Wars” hanging from the ceiling — a tribute to Tom’s aerospace engineering days and to having two boys, according to Carol.

The couple The couple are about everything artistic. They have been married 51 years, noting that it hasn’t been easy to be professional artists, and they couldn’t have done it without the help of agents, who steered work their way.

Carol and Tom have joined a plein air landscape painting group to continually challenge themselves. They are in their studio 24/7 — except when sleeping — and it’s obvious it’s where they are happiest.

The two are matter-of-fact and humble about the profession that is also their passion — and the joy their work has brought to others.

“We’ve never had real jobs,” Carol said.

“This is all we’ve ever done,” Tom added.

VOICES EChO hits it right down the middle

s a new member of the Evergreen Christian Outreach board of directors, I was invited to participate in an all-day Saturday board retreat. The purpose was to gain agreement concerning the future direction the board would take the organization.

These types of events are interesting to me, and I was looking forward to getting to know my fellow board members better as we participated in the work of the day.

OK, there was another reason for my enthusiasm.

The meeting was to take place at the home of Jan and Craig Stadler.

As a lifelong golfer, I admit to being a bit star-struck at the prospect of meeting the former professional golfer who had a great career both on the regular and Champions tours. He had wins at the 1982 Masters, the Bob Hope Desert Classic and the Greater Greensboro Open, just to list a few.

I made a mental note of a couple of questions I would ask him. I found both Craig and Jan to be warm and wonderful people. It was an uplifting day and the venue contributed.

As we got to work on our agenda,

I was struck by the enthusiasm in the room.

There were 15 participants, an impressive group of highly accomplished individuals. As we progressed, I could not help JIM thinking how lucky Evergreen ROHRER is to have so COLUMNIST much talent focusing on one of the community’s most beloved institutions.

You probably know the drill.

First, focus on the organization’s future vision. A proper vision has to be able to lift the organization to a new level of performance, so it had to be inspiring, yet realistic.

The exact words are not yet complete, but the idea was for EChO to be a conduit for building a safe and healthy community. Another central idea was for EChO to normalize asking for help. These are laudable ideas but not easy to accomplish. Good, I thought, easy is not what we should be seeking.

The fact that this board was looking for new levels of attainment

for the organization might imply that it was trying to improve less than exemplary performance. 2020 was actually a banner year for the organization, which had stretched itself during one of the most difficult years in its 34-year history.

The food bank had to increase its reach to serve 250 new families. People who had never had food insecurity were desperately seeking assistance. Many of the food bank’s traditional sources of food were not available, but with the assistance of a generous community, it met the food emergency challenge.

By the time the stay-at-home order ended and the shelter closed on May 15, 2020, EChO client services advocates had successfully secured housing for eight homeless individuals and even found privately donated automobiles for two more women. Since May they have housed 12 additional clients. The effort was noted as client services advocate Amy Lankutis won the “Housing Firsty Award.”

Mary Petrich, director of volunteer services, remembers this trying time with the following observation. “EChO volunteers this year epitomize the concept of positive

thinking. They see the bright side of life and the resolve to share that with others. They helped to keep EChO afloat during this time of crisis. They staffed the new food bank, unloaded trucks, stocked shelves and assisted shoppers.”

With the retail store unable to provide the normal level of funding, the leaders and board members had the most challenging environment ever. But even as they addressed their urgent problems, the leaders also managed to focus on the long term by making a bold move to a new location, which will better meet the organization’s future needs.

I think that sometimes we can be lifted-up by being even a small part of something much bigger than we are. As I left the Stadler home that day, I felt that emotion, and I believe that my fellow board members did as well.

Begging for Law Enforcement Help The Sandy Hook shooting was the stuff nightmares are made on. That event will continue to make nightmares for most people in this country for the rest of their lives. Others view the event as inevitable or a fabrication. I can see how denial would make it easier for a gun enthusiast to live with their conscience. Some of those patriots that sleep soundly at night with our country’s gun laws made their first group coming out party at the Capitol on 1/6. Using

your instincts and collective years of police training, how many guns do you think each one of the patriots had at home or in their vehicles?

And are you OK with them legally walking around with these guns in public? This group of unstable and easily duped gun enthusiasts is going to be around for a while. As their imaginary narratives fall to pieces some will probably lash out again.

Wouldn’t cops rather get beaten with a pole flying a blue lives matter flag than take on the same group

sporting AR-15’s? Bullet holes are more damaging than bitter irony.

Innocent people of all ages and cops will bear the brunt of this current wave of gun violence. No new laws will stop this wave. But older white Americans listen to cops. Local cops making a strong statement against people freely walking around with certain types of guns could make a huge difference before the next wave. Please help.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Responding to guns and groceries I read with interest Mack Yaun’s letter in your March 24 edition titled “Guns and Groceries” in which he bemoaned a fellow shopper “packing heat.” Perhaps he would feel differently if his fellow shopper had been shopping at the King Soopers in Boulder. Would some of those ten people still be alive? How many of those 10 people used their “cunning and wit” as suggested in the letter?

A gifted veterinarian and genuine humanitarian It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Dr. Tana Hetrick. Her contributions to the Evergreen community of animals, certainly, but their humans as well, are worthy of richly deserved accolades.

I was new to Colorado in the 80’s and found in Dr. Hetrick a vet who was willing to go out of her way to help a new dog owner who also found herself caring for many other animals on the ranch, for which I had no experience. In those early days, Dr. Hetrick would drive to us to provide “herd checkups.”

I think she very much enjoyed getting outdoors to do her work, but she always kept in the back of her mind the environment in which our animals lived, and treated them with that in mind.

When I lost that first dog, Tana gently suggested things I might want to consider to memorialize her. Her guidance was kind and respectful of the almost 20-year relationship with that dog. When our house burned down in 2003, she came to the rescue when we found ourselves greeted with mandates to “groom” a wolf dog that had adopted us. She had a commanding authority that was respected. As we grew old together, we shared strategies for staying healthy, in spite of

increasing physical limitations.

It was always a treat to wait in the exam room and survey the countless photos of animals her many clients had shared with her. She greeted each animal with joy and skill, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

We remember feeling such disappointment when she informed us of her retirement, but also had to acknowledge that it was long overdue for Hetrick to make time for herself. Though closed, the Animal Health Clinic was her home for months, where she meticulously completed her reports on every animal she had been treating and met with clients to review those records. She was the ultimate professional: caring and proficient in her work with animals; sensitive in her interactions with their humans.

We only hope Tana was able to enjoy her retirement close to family, gardening as much as she enjoyed, relishing the moments she could share with her own animals, and those who came to visit for fun!

Dr. Tana Hetrick was truly a treasure in our midst. We know we are not alone in asserting that she has been, and will always be, hugely missed.

Fifteen-hundredths of a point.

That is the spread between the Evergreen Cougars and Chatfield Chargers gymnastics teams on March 29 when the Cougars lost the dual home meet. But that’s OK with Coach Tabor Cowden.

“This was a spring break meet, so I didn’t have all of my best gymnasts,” Cowden said. “I assume, in all fairness, that Chatfield was probably in the same boat.”

He said other Cougars stepped up during the meet, and he plans to use the loss as a learning tool during practices.

“We came up on the short end of the stick,” Cowden said. “If we had stuck one more dismount, we would have won the meet. I would rather lose by a tenth of a point at a dual meet than lose at state.”

Cowden said with state right around the corner — April 22-24 — the 15 gymnasts were training hard and staying healthy. The season is so abbreviated that the 4A league championships are April 10, with regionals April 15-17.

On March 29, the Evergreen gymnasts jumped, flew, danced and swung their way through their first home meet at Pinnacle Academy, happy to be, pardon the pun, in the swing of things again.

Cowden called the team resilient as the Colorado High School Athletic Association has changed rules in response to the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the school year.

For senior Marlee Osborn, whose favorite apparatus is the beam, being with her teammates for the past five months since the fall season was postponed helped her get through the rough patches.

Senior Hannah Synchef particularly enjoys the uneven bars because of the flow between stunts, and she’s glad there has been a season of some sort. As a senior, she’s disappointed that she will not participate in some of the events commemorating her final year in high school gymnastics that have been modified because of the pandemic.

For the parents working the meet — spectators were not allowed in the gym because of COVID-19 concerns — the season has been bittersweet. They noted that the girls had become a family, and it would be difficult for the seniors to say goodbye.

“They have learned life lessons and character strengths,” Sarah Hays, whose daughter Kat is on the team. “That’s what (Kat) will take away. They are such a connected team. They speak truth to each other. This group has a lot of energy and positivity.”

In cold weather, let wildlife chill

Most people are curled up inside during snowstorms and the coldest days of winter, but outside, there’s a whole different battle occurring.

The birds, deer, elk, moose, sheep and hundreds of other species are sheltering, using instincts — honed over generations — to survive.

“Nature knows best,” said Christie Greene, an Evergreen environmentalist. “People need to let animals live their lives without interference.”

Wildlife has adapted over the decades to withstand all that Mother Nature throws at it — the heat, the rain, the snow and the cold.

“Basically, wildlife is designed the way it is by nature,” Greene said, noting that animals don’t need help, no matter how wellmeaning it is.

“One thing people need to understand is that wildlife is very sensitive,” said Andy Hough, environmental resource coordinator for Douglas County. “They can sense the storm coming.”

Many animals begin increasing their food intake in preparation to endure the storm without much access to food, Hough said.

They will also move to a better location, such as an area with lower elevation, or a place with trees, to shelter from the storm.

“Every species is different, and all react somewhat differently,” Hough said. “They have the instincts to do what they need to do.”

Winter can be pretty hard on wildlife, according to Jason Clay, Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman.

“They have to search a little harder for food,” Clay said, “but the moisture overall is a very

good thing in the long run. Big storms may have short-term impacts on the wintering animals but great long-term benefits.”

These animals have adapted to situations like the snowfall seen in the area in March, Hough said.

“While that storm seemed intense for us, it is not abnormal for this area,” he said. “These types of storms have been happening since the beginning of time.”

It’s not unusual for residents to see birds and deer using trees to hide away from storms.

“They are using that landscape anyway,” he said. “It’s not unnatural for them to curl up under someone’s trees.”

Bears, which will be awakening from hibernation soon, may end up remaining in their winter dens longer when there are significant spring storms like the one the foothills saw in mid-March.

Greene added that when bears, in particular, get used to eating human food, especially trash, they tend to hibernate for shorter periods.

This is one of the reasons Idaho Springs and Georgetown have enacted rules governing when trash can be put out — requiring trash cans to be bear-proof or not allowing cans to be set out until the morning of trash collection.

Deer, Greene said, don’t eat much food in the winter.

“Their stomachs are pretty quiet during the winter, and then (their stomachs) wake up in the spring when everything greens up.”

Some deer species, she added, gain fat and grow winter coats of hollow fur to provide an insulating layer for warmth. Some birds have a cold-weather response called “countercurrent heat exchange,” which allows them to stay warmer on cold, snowy days

than they seem.

Moose, which are seen more frequently lately in Clear Creek County and the Jeffco foothills, have long legs to help them move through deep snow.

Many birds migrate south for the cold months, while those that remain stock up on seeds to survive the winter, Greene said. She is amazed that the chickadee’s brain grows neurons each winter to boost its memory, so it can find the seeds it has squirreled away.

One of the most important things for residents to know is that they shouldn’t attempt to help animals by feeding them, even on the most brutal winter days. CPW has had many problems with residents feeding animals, which can result in death for the animal, disrupted migrations and other issues.

“You can put feeders out for birds, but most other cases are illegal,” Hough said. “Much of what we feed wildlife is not the best thing for them, and it can cause health problems.”

Feeding can also lead animals to change their habits, which can cause nuisances and dangerous situations.

“These animals are very rugged.” Clay said. “They can survive these tough winters on their own. … They don’t need our help.”

Birders of a feather flocking for annual count

I

do not happen to be a “birder,” at least by the definition used by most United States birder organizations and followers. My guess however, many of us consider ourselves birders to some degree. Most of us have an interest in birds, some feed and water our winged neighbors, especially during inclement weather, some of us may provide bird houses in the spring. If we get uniquely close, we stop to observe size, color, we probably wonder if we have seen this species before.

The big difference may simply be how faithfully do we go outdoors on specific bird watching tours? Do we read about local bird populations? Are we a member of a birding group? Do we study bird routines? migration habits?

It comes down to generally how much time and interest do we commit to watching, feeding, studying, or traveling some distances to watch or photograph

birds with other birders.

According to the American Birding Association (ABA) the latest numbers are much higher than one might guess. ABA will tell us about a 18% of our country’s population or 45M Ron Hellbusch people are active birders. They will also suggest to us the interest in birding is growing. I sense that is realistic. That growing interest most likely is due to the significant interest in the environmental and nature-related issues generally. It is estimated $96B is generated by the overall birding interest. More specifically $17B is in the form of income and taxes generated from birding related activities. Moreover 782,000 jobs are associated with the birding industry.

OUTDOOR LIVING

ABA has about 12,000 members, most of which are active and faithful birders. Birders have valuable support from other active organizations both public and private. Some of those include Cornell (College) Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, American Bird Conservancy, the National Wildlife Refuge System. Add to this number are groups who have more specific bird focus, but who’s objectives support broader groups of birds, groups like Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants and Quail Forever, plus the supportive work of various state government wildlife and outdoors agencies.

Large numbers of books and publications have been written about birding from both a professional/scientific and personal interest level with knowledgeable writers, David Sibley and Jason Crotty, being two of the many popular birder writers. The birder organization, “Birdwatch-

Jeffco residents reach at least 40% partial vaccination County remaining in Level Blue for now despite scare

Jefferson County ended March by reaching another significant milestone in its effort to vaccinate every county resident against COVID-19.

On March 31, Jefferson County Public Health Executive Director Dawn Comstock announced that over 40% of county residents had received at least one COVID-19 vaccination. By April 5, that number had grown to 43.1%.

The numbers were even better for the age groups that are most vulnerable for the virus. As of April 5, 89.3% of Jeffco residents ages 70-and-over had received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 74% of residents ages 65-69 had received a dose.

“I’m so happy to see that Jeffco residents are going out and getting those vaccines as soon as they can

find an appointment,” said Comstock in her weekly update about the state of the pandemic to Jeffco mayors and other leaders. “That is one of the main things our communities can do to try to end this pandemic.”

Those levels of vaccination should already be paying significant dividends, Comstock said, as county data shows the test positivity rate for those 70-and-over started dropping dramatically about one month after that population first became eligible for the vaccine.

“What we saw was just so impressive and so telling in that their test positivity rate just dropped off a cliff,” said Comstock. “And their test positivity rate is now 1% or lower.”

But while such trends are only expected to accelerate as more and more people receive the vaccine, Comstock said she remains concerned about how the overall rate of new cases in the county have remain stagnant despite the accelerating rate of vaccination.

COVID-19 cases in Jeffco peaked in mid-November, when the seven-day

count of new cases reached 575.7 on Nov. 18. Then, in early December, they began a long period of generally steep decline as the county’s seven-day average dropped from 562 on Dec. 6 to 87.1 on Feb. 20.

But that was as low as cases have gotten and the trend since then has been for the seven-day average to hover between about 107 and 130.

“It’s concerning that we are not seeing that decrease that we are hoping to see given the large percentage of our population that is now being vaccinated,” Comstock said.

But while the rate of new cases is not declining as fast as JCPH would like to see given current rates of vaccination, Jeffco has so far managed to avoid being moved from Level Blue on the state COVID-19 dial back to the more-restrictive Level Yellow.

The state would have the option of moving to Jeffco to Level Yellow if it saw a seven-day average of greater than 115 new cases for five consecutive days.

That nearly happened during the week of March 22 when the seven-

day average went above 115 on four consecutive days. But that average then dropped to 114.2 and has not risen above 115 since.

The county’s test positivity rate also nearly spiked to 5%, another threshold that would trigger a move to Level Yellow, during that same period before declining some.

However, Comstock warned that test positivity rate was becoming a less reliable measure of the amount of virus in the community as far fewer people are now getting tested than at other points in the pandemic.

Comstock said the county believes the drop in testing is a result of people being less likely to attribute symptoms they are experiencing to COVID-19.

“That’s one of the things that we’ll continue to try to communicate to our community that if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, even if you think it’s the seasonal allergies you experience every single year, go get tested just to be safe and confirm,” she said.

Aaron Faust had the honor of representing the Easter bunny at Aspen Ridge Church, noting that youth group members vie for the job each year.

While children didn’t get to find eggs in a traditional hunt, parent Ben Warren of Evergreen said he was happy that organizers at Aspen Ridge Church adapted to provide something fun for them to celebrate Easter. Warren brought Jacob, 10, Kate, 7, and Livi, 4, to get in on the Easter egg action.

Lindsey McIver of Conifer, who

drove to Aspen Ridge Church with her husband, Alan, and children Lexi, 9, Kloe, 6, and Jace, 7, called the event something festive to do for Easter. She volunteered at previous egg hunts.

At the Bailey Library, Friends of the Bailey Library President Linda Henley said the Easter egg hunt had grown for years until it was canceled last year because of COVID-19. The group was expecting a large turnout Saturday, and a steady stream of cars rolled into the lot.

Shiloh Martinez brought 3-yearold Charlee, who was excited to see the Easter bunny. Shiloh said she saw information about the event on Facebook and decided to do “a little something” for Charlee for Easter.

Ksenia Love was glad that Logan, 3, had a chance to celebrate Easter since Logan didn’t get to participate in an egg hunt last year.

“This is something that helps bring a sense of community,” Ksenia said. “We missed this activity.”

Public Notices call Bobi 303.659.2522 Legals City and County Request for Proposals Clear Creek County Coroner Office Remodel Project Dumont, Colorado PURPOSE The Clear Creek Board of County Commissioners seeks to develop a new County Coroner’s office and morgue space, in an existing facility located at 3400 Stanley Road, Dumont.

An ambulance station is operated in the current facility with the first and second level office areas being vacant and shared interior 3-bay parking garage hosting ambulance, Sheriff, and eventually, Coroner vehicles.

The County seeks to retain a General Contracting Firm to provide all engineering, design, permitting and construction and/or construction oversight required to construct a Coroner’s exam room/autopsy suite with storage coolers as well as admin office space. The Project includes architectural, civil and structural engineering, MEP engineering, Information Technology planning, construction testing, construction oversight, and contingency.

The purpose of this Request-for-Proposal is to obtain relevant information, credentials, qualifications, experience and a proposed Project Approach from interested Firms to inform the Board for selection of General Contracting Firm for the Project.

Plans and specifications for the project are available on the County website: https://www. clearcreekcounty.us/bids.aspx SCOPE OF SERVICES The Scope of Services desired includes but is not limited to the following: • Architectural design services: Generate 50%, 95% construction documents for Owner review and permitting through Clear Creek County. (See proposed design, Exhibit A & B to this document).

• Mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services: Generate 50%, 95% construction documents for Owner review and permitting through Clear Creek County.

• Project management: Provide complete project management support inclusive of OAC meetings, coordination, project administration, scheduling, budgeting, design review and closeout.

• Onsite Supervision: Provide fulltime onsite supervision over the duration of the project while contractors are onsite. Supervisor shall oversee all operations and ensure contractors are performing the work in a safe and professional fashion consistent with the plans and specifications.

• Provide all insurance requirements in accordance with Clear Creek County standards • Provide a payment and performance bond in accordance with Colorado law.

• Include an Owner’s reserve and contingency amount to be controlled by Clear Creek County; each shall be 10% of the total GMP. • Secure all permitting for the completion of the project • Metal building design and construction • Design/build for addition of pull-through garage space • Commissioning of all new equipment and systems • Final as-built survey and CAD files for Clear Creek County’s records • All sanitary and temporary facilities for the execution of the project • All selective demolition and waste disposal • Concrete saw-cutting, demolition and disposal • Millwork package for administration area • All structural and non-structural framing materials • Thermal and sound insulation as required • Sealing of penetrations, doors and windows to maintain sanitary environment • New doors, frames and hardware • Keycard and access controls • Fire alarm upgrades and integration as required • Drywall assemblies and finishes • Acoustical ceilings • Painting • Epoxy flooring for the autopsy space • FRP at areas requiring wash-down • New lighting for the Coroner’s office and autopsy space • New hydraulic elevator; • Specialized mechanical equipment, ventilation, and installation for autopsy, Coroner’s office and administration • New electrical generator for full building load • Electrical reconfiguration to support autopsy and administration area • Exit and egress signage • Data and network upgrades • Video Cameras and monitoring equipment • Low voltage installation and connection • Engineer and construct cistern water storage • Secured door outside of elevator door to morgue • Final Design • Bid Package; • Cost estimates; • Construction and construction administration.

Jefferson County Assessor’s Public Notice The Jefferson County Colorado Assessor will hear all objections and protests concerning valuation of taxable real property for tax year 2021 beginning May 1, 2021. Mailed objections for real property valuation must be postmarked by June 1, 2021.

Due to COVID 19 no objection is to be made in person. There is a property valuation protest drop box at the Jefferson County Offices located at 100 Jefferson County Parkway. Appeals must be placed in the box by close of business on June 1, 2021.

Objections and protests concerning the valuation of taxable personal property (business equipment) will be heard beginning on June 15, 2021. Written objections for personal property valuations must be postmarked by June 30, 2021.

Protests which are mailed or filed online will be considered timely up until 11:59 p.m. MST. on June 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021 for personal property.

Sealed Bids for the construction of the Project will be received at the offices of TST Infrastructure, LLC, located at 5655 S Yosemite St, Suite 101, Greenwood Village, CO 80111, until Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at 11:00 am local time. At that time, the Bids received will be publicly opened and read.

The Project includes the following Work: The work consists of modification to the existing backwash pond at the Roxborough Water and Sanitation District Water Treatment Plant. The project includes site grading, installation of pond concrete structures, piping, and other appurtenances. The project includes Bid Alternate A for installation of 410 linear feet of 18” PVC pipe and Bid Alternate B for installation of a 35 hp submersible centrifugal wastewater pump, electrical equipment and associated piping and appurtenances.

The project is located at the Roxborough Water Treatment Plant at 8678 N Roxborough Park Rd, Littleton, CO 80125. Bids will be received for a single prime Contract. Bids shall be on a lump sum price basis, as indicated in the Bid Form.

A mandatory pre-bid conference for the Project will be held on Thursday, April 22nd, 2021 at 10:00 am at Roxborough Water and Sanitation District Water Treatment Plant, 8678 N. Roxborough Park Road, Littleton, CO 80125. Bids will not be accepted from Bidders that do not attend the mandatory pre-bid conference. CDC guidelines, social distancing and masks are required.

Bid security in the amount of five (5) percent of the total Bid Price must accompany each Bid and shall be furnished in accordance with the Instruction to Bidders.

Bidders must be licensed to do business in the State of Colorado. Bids received from Bidders who are not recorded by the Issuing Office as having received the Bidding Documents will not be opened.

The Owner reserves the right to award the contract by sections, or reject any or all Bids, and to waive any informalities and irregularities therein.

Requirements include: No DUI within the past 5 years, no felonies, must be 21 years of age, must have a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least 12 months and drug screen required.

This position performs troubleshooting, welding, mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance on vehicles, equipment and installations used at company shop and customer field site locations if necessary. Experience in Repair and Maintenance of Class 8 Truck Chassis, experience in Industrial Electricity –preferred, but not required.

Repair and troubleshooting of 1224 Volt Electrical systems. Welding experience- preferred, but not required. CDL/Class B required, Class A is preferred. Strong work ethic and motivation to perform task independently. Willingness to learn advanced skills. Starting pay is $32.77 per hour. CNAs needed part-time to full-time to supplement our current staff. Our CNAs provide Home Health and Hospice patient care in the home, in nursing facilities and in assisted living facilities. An active Colorado CNA license is required.

Experienced SLP needed part-time to serve our mountain and foothills communities, specifically within our service area along the I-70 corridor. A Master’s degree, 4+ years of experience and an active Colorado license are required.

Social Worker needed to be a vital member of our interdisciplinary Palliative Care and Hospice teams based in Evergreen. The position is full-time, is benefits eligible, and is based out of the Evergreen offices, but will require travel to homes throughout our service area. An MSW degree or equivalent experience and an active CO license, are required; an LCSW is preferred.

Experienced Physical Therapist needed to join our interdisciplinary Home Health team based in Evergreen. The position is part-time with the potential to grow to full-time, will become benefits-eligible once fully trained and carrying a caseload of 48 RVUs per pay period (every two weeks) , and will require travel to homes throughout our service area, specifically Evergreen and the 285 corridor. A PT or DPT degree, a minimum of two years of experience, and an active Colorado license are required.

Intake Coordinator/Medical Records Processor needed full-time to join our patient care/ administrative team in Evergreen, Colorado. The position is 40 hours per week with rotating weekends and is benefits eligible. Requirements include a HS diploma or equivalent, the ability to multi-task in a fastpaced environment, outstanding customer service skills, and attention to detail. Familiarity with medical terminology, data entry experience or previous experience with electronic medical records, is a plus.

Home health, hospice and geriatric experience preferred for all clinical positions. Our service area encompasses the mountain communities within Jefferson, Clear Creek, Gilpin and Park counties (along both the I-70 and 285 corridors).
