Chocolate and Valentine’s Day go hand in hand — and Conifer businesses took advantage of the duo during their inaugural Chocolate Walk over the weekend.

Businesses along the 285 Corridor provided chocolate samples from syrup to hot chocolate to truffles to entice people to visit their shops and restaurants. The idea came from Melanie Swearengin, executive director of the Conifer Area Chamber of Commerce, who learned of a similar program from another chamber.

“We have always promoted our retail shops,” Swearengin said, “but with COVID-19, we have reevaluated what we can do to promote them even more. We are trying to figure out how to get people in the community excited to get out and visit shops.”

She said shops are open, but

David Reagan Cox (61) passed away February 8, 2021 in Reno, Nevada David was born in Lafayette, Louisiana January 12, 1960. As a child he moved with his family to Houston, Texas.

He spent his younger years playing with his three sisters and neighbors in their backyard where his father had created a kid’s paradise with a swing set, tire swing, treehouse and a jungle gym. Most weekends were spent swimming, fishing and boating at Tennwood Country Club.

In 1968, they moved to Lawrence, KS. where both parents attended University of Kansas for their Masters’ Degrees.

Afterwards, they moved to Wichita, KS and finally to Evergreen, CO which he considered his hometown. He loved to ski, hike, camp and dirt bike in the Rocky Mountains. He earned a Black Belt in Taekwondo by his junior year in Evergreen High School. He was also an accomplished clarinet player. He attended Wentworth Military Academy where he graduated high school in 1978 and competed his first year

David moved to San Diego for a year and then back to Colorado. Although he loved Colorado, he retired first in Las Vegas and then Reno, Nevada.

He is survived by his father, Joseph P. Cox of Genesee, CO. his sisters Susan Cox Stevens of Breckenridge, CO., Cheryl Cox Lafon (Jean-Baptiste) of Colorado Springs, CO., and Cynthia Cox (Michael Trealoff) of Centennial, CO., his nephews Bradley Stevens ( Katie), Trevor Stevens and Michael Lafon, his nieces Paige Stevens and Lora Lafon, his great nephew and niece, Amy Jo and Reid Stevens.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Charlene W. Cox and his brother-in-law James David Stevens.

In his youth, he was a scuba diver, private pilot and avid outdoorsman. He also fought wildfires and worked for the forest service in California.

Throughout his career and in retirement he hiked, biked, worked building the Continental Divide Trail, cross country skied and was an amateur photographer.

Glenn Edward Wallace, 79 of Evergreen passed away surrounded by family at Willowbrook Memory Care in the early morning of February 1, 2021.

Husband to Robin and father to Deborah, Glenn and Christopher, and grandfather to Kai, Lily and Bryson, he will be missed in so many ways. He is survived by his two brothers, David and Bruce and their families.

His gentle spirit, sense of humor, spirit of adventure and passion for doing the right thing for his family, community and country will always be remembered. He was a youth soccer coach, president of the World Affairs Council, Democratic delegate to a Colorado convention, worked with Clear Creek Open Space and did fire mitigation for his community. He also was an ace ping pong player, and enjoyed a nice Tommyknocker Maple Brown beer or a glass of wine with friends and family.

Glenn was born in Maxwell, CA , second of three sons to Leland and Crystal Wallace.

He was an avid world traveler. He and Robin did 7 home exchanges all over the world and got to sail the Atlantic and through the Panama canal – lifelong dreams. He got to visit six of the seven continents. He was a highpointer and climbed 31 states highest points, traveling in a Road Trek RV. It got him all over Canada, the US and even Baja California.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served in Thailand and Japan, gaining the rank of Captain in the Air Force. He worked for the Bureau of Land Management and had a total of 38 years of Federal Service.

A true outdoorsman, a celebration of life will be held later, in Floyd Hill Open Space Park, commemorating his 80th birthday on Aug. 5, 2021.

Barbara A Lombardi of Conifer, CO, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2021.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah McKinney, Christel Lykins and Toni Hatfield. As well as her grandchildren, Brian McKinney, Katharine Glaub, Steven McKinney, Kimberly McKinney, Alexander Lykins, Shelby Lykins, David Lee Jr and Corey Lee. Barbara was also blessed with 7 great grandchildren, Charlotte, Bridgett, Alexander, Isabella, John, Claire and Myles.

Barbara has two surviving brothers, Paul and Rick Mayhew. Her numerous amazing

Barbara lived in the Evergreen and Conifer area for more than 50 years. She loved living in the mountains surrounded by nature and admired its beauty. Her home in Conifer was a special place for her that brought her peace.

Barbara will be cremated on Saturday, February 13th, 2021. There will be no service held ahead of time.

The immediate family would like to thank her loving friends and family for all of their kindness and support during this time.

One dead in U.S. 285 crash near Conifer

A 22-year-old Wheat Ridge man died at the scene of a crash on U.S. 285 in Aspen Park on Feb. 11.

Family members on Facebook have identified him as Michael Maes Jr. He was driving a truck filled with glass, and at about 1:30 p.m., he collided with a Colorado Department of Transportation

truck with an attenuator on the back that was slowing. The driver and passenger in the CDOT truck were not injured, according to Colorado State Patrol Master Trooper Gary Cutler.

Southbound U.S. 285 traffic was diverted onto the frontage road near Dallman Road for several hours as crews moved the vehicles and cleaned up the broken glass.

U.S. 285 reopened at about 4 p.m.

Commercial space in the foothills is a hot commodity.

The office and retail markets have kept pace with the residential housing market that has been crazy the last few years, real estate agents say.

“We are swamped right now,” said Bill Downes, owner broker at Evergreen Commercial Group. “There are a number of dynamics going on that have caused a significant increase in office and commercial property sales and leases.”

Compared with the 30% vacancy rate during 2008 and subsequent years thanks to the Great Recession, vacancy rates in Evergreen and along the 285 corridor are ranging from 3% to under 10%, and there are no available industrial properties in Evergreen.

Evergreen has an overabundance of office space, while Conifer has an overabundance of retail space, Downes said.

“The current office vacancy (in Evergreen) is more than in 2019, but it isn’t as if Evergreen had all the buildings full,” said Jamie Macbeth, president and managing broker at Genesee Commercial Group.

Like residential, if space is priced correctly, it will lease.

Small spaces

People are interested in renting small office space — one to two offices — and Downes and Macbeth figure that has to do in large part with the pandemic.

“Frankly, some people don’t want to work from home,” Downes said.

“There’s a huge demand for single offices. In fact, we have converted some large office space into executive suites.”

Macbeth agrees.

“I think that most of the tenants I

have seen have been smaller tenants looking for single office space up to 1,000 square feet,” Macbeth said.

“I haven’t seen much movement of tenants wanting larger space.”

Macbeth said he hasn’t seen a huge influx of a specific type of office tenant, as opposed to about a decade ago, when Evergreen saw several medical offices move in.

Needing internet

Much like residential sales, internet connectivity is a big issue, and many working from home without good internet must find another location to work, so they look for office space.

“A lot of decent-sized companies have figured out they can have employees work from home and be productive or in small office space, so why pay for large office space?”

Macbeth added.

Other issues

• Macbeth said business owners are looking for shorter leases, especially due to COVID-19, which has forced landlords to change their requirements of a 3-year to 5-year lease.

• Macbeth and Downes agree that commercial buildings are being purchased as investments, especially since loan interest rates are so low.

• Downes said retail leasing was about average in part due to the unsteadiness for retail businesses thanks to COVID-19, “but I wouldn’t call it weak by any stretch.”

Three rezoning requests to allow homes to remain

Two property owners in the foothills are asking to rezone three parcels from commercial to planned development because the homes already there are considered nonconforming uses.

According to Jefferson County zoning requirements, no changes can be made to buildings considered nonconforming uses. They can’t be rebuilt in case of fire or expanded.

Both owners said during community meetings in the past few weeks that they have no intention to over-develop the properties to allay neighbors’ concerns.

They are asking for planneddevelopment zoning rather than residential zoning because Jefferson County commissioners try not to lose commercial property, according to Jeffco Planner Cassidy Clements.

Also, in some cases, residential zoning doesn’t fit the existing homes on the properties.

Here is a breakdown of the three rezoning requests. The property owners still need to bring the formal rezoning applications before the Jefferson County Planning Commission and the county commissioners.

19181 Highway 8, Morrison

The owner of a four-acre parcel on Highway 8 in Morrison wants to rezone the property to add a garage and playroom to the existing house.

Beth Trammell owns the house built in the 1960s that is across the street from The Fort. She emphasized she had no plans to develop the property further.

Neighbors were most concerned that the four acres would eventually be subdivided for additional residential uses, potentially hurting area wells and putting more cars on

Highway 8.

“Our community is really, really concerned about someone trying to cram a lot of houses on the property,” said Delmar Rumph, treasurer of the nearby Willow Springs homeowners association, during the community meeting. “If (Trammell) could put something into the rezoning proposal that would not put more than one dwelling unit per acre (in the future), that would go a long way to assuage concerns.”

Owner Ted Antenucci wants to change the commercial zoning on two lots, a .88-acre property with a home already on it and another oneacre lot, to planned development.

The zoning change would allow a home to be built on the 1-acre parcel.

The property was once part of the T-Bar-S Guest Ranch, one of several resorts along Upper Bear Creek

A September fire in a duplex is prompting Antenucci to rezone a 2-acre parcel on the north side of Upper Bear Creek Road.

Because the three buildings containing seven residential units are nonconforming uses, Antenucci cannot repair the duplex. This property was also part of the T-Bar-S Guest Ranch, and the old lodge houses four units, there’s a single-family dwelling and the duplex.

There is no proposal to add additional living units or space or demolish anything, said Jeanne Shaffer with Chadwick Land Use Entitlements representing Antenucci.

Four fire departments on the U.S. 285 corridor interested in consolidating their operations are spending $41,655 to hire a consultant to look at the issues they must consider.

Seeing your doctor can be a healthy intention in 2021

It’s a priority that deserves a promise.

While those New Year’s resolutions, such as watching what we eat or starting a fitness routine, are so common for so many of us, the importance of an annual wellness visit with a primary care physician, unfortunately, can often be overlooked.

It may also be a simple case of avoidance. After all, the continuation of stay-at-home recommendations, health safety orders and natural fears about visiting a busy doctor’s office during the COVID-19 pandemic can all be contributing to people not wanting to see their physician.

But without a doubt, it’s vitally important to make a yearly appointment with your doctor.

It makes good sense for a variety of reasons. Getting regular health exams and tests can help find issues before they begin to cause problems — and may increase your chances of finding a treatment or cure quicker. In addition, certain aspects of

lifestyle and family history can contribute to your health. A visit with your physician can help to suggest screenings for tests that can detect possible problems before you even notice them, such as a mammogram for breast cancer.

It’s helpful to know that many DR. TODD physician offices WISSER and hospitals COLUMNIST have increased safety protocols to protect patients who need to visit their doctor during the pandemic. There may also be options for conducting your visit virtually by using telemedicine or connecting with your physician by phone or email.

And don’t be afraid to ask questions because the doctor is there to help you. They are ready to provide answers.

Remember, this checkup will allow us as medical professionals to address any health issues now, so you may be able to avoid any bigger problems in the future. The more you get in front of your health, the better your health can be. And the healthier you are, the less chance there is for a costlier health treatment down the road.

In addition to helping you stay healthy, going to your wellness visit each year can help you keep your independence. Keep in mind a visit can be designed for your specific conditions and focus on prevention. And, a visit can also be a great

chance to get some extra one-on-one time with a medical professional, which helps your doctor personalize your care.

Depending on your conditions and health history, the doctor or nurse practitioner will typically: Check your health history, vital signs and appearance; Review your list of prescription and over-the-counter medicines; Offer health advice designed to keep you healthy; Create a list of your risk factors; and Create a health care plan.

You’ll likely need to complete a health-risk assessment before your visit. Your doctor’s office may mail the form to you before your appointment or it may give you a link to download it.

In any case, it’s important to maintain your resolve in committing to your care, and making and taking the time this new year for your doctor to see how well you are doing.

I promise it will be well worth it.

Fighting against discrimination

As part of the original staff of the Colorado Office of Policy, Research & Regulatory Reform in 1981, my two colleagues and I were responsible to identify and eliminate duplicative, burdensome and unnecessary government regulation. One of our first projects was to review all of the forms used by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.

As we began the task to review thousands of pages of forms for a variety of government agencies, one disturbing trend was how many forms required people to provide the race, sex, creed and other demographic information of applicants. If laws and regulations said that people who met requirements were eligible to receive licenses and pursue activities

based upon those specific requirements, we believed those questions were inappropriate and could be used to discriminate against people based upon their race, religion or sex.

appropriate questions were removed from all of those forms. Subsequent reviews of the forms of other regulatory agencies throughout state government led to removal of requirements for Coloradans to provide their race, religion or sex as a condition to meet regulatory requirements.

As part of the conversation about how we make sure that access to COVID-19 vaccinations is made available to everyone, regardless of race, it has taken me back to the review of all those application forms. Forty years later, fighting against discrimination is still a necessary and important public policy. And yet, how we do so is fundamentally different in these two cases. approval to practice their professions and pursue their careers.

But with demonstrated, statistical proof that the virus has disproportionately impacted racial minorities, it’s incumbent on us to ensure that specific efforts are taken to make sure that those communities have access to and participate in receiving vaccinations at rates that are at least the same as for the population at large. That vital public policy goal will require us to keep track of the racial composition of people who are vaccinated.

These two very different activities have the same goal that government provide services to all without discrimination based upon race, creed, or sex. These two diverse examples show that how we achieve that fundamental responsibility will be different in different circumstances.

The latest charges are in addition to 16 felonies and 16 misdemeanors in other felony cases filed over the last year that allege attempts to influence public servants, domestic violence and retaliation against witnesses.

Emmi is an animal rights attorney, who began The Animal Law Center based in Englewood and owns the 14 Hands Ranch in Evergreen.

Attorneys Colin Bresee and Malcolm Seawell are representing Emmi. Bresee said on Feb. 12 that he’s being bombarded by calls from the news media all over the country and internationally about the case.

The two attorneys are still reviewing the allegations against Emmi, he said.

“We have not reviewed the allegations and the basis for the charges,” Bresee said. “This case involves more than paper. It involves electronics. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Much of the 35-page arrest affidavit uses Emmi’s text messages, emails and internet searches to make its case against her.

The arrest affidavit also states that Emmi sought mental health treatment in August 2020.

Emmi’s estranged husband told investigators that he is afraid Emmi would kill him, their three children and his girlfriend; his girlfriend, who is the family’s former au pair, told investigators she didn’t feel safe; and they have gone into hiding with the children, according to the affidavit.

Allegations

The Jeffco Sheriff ’s Office has been investigating Emmi since July, and the affidavit states that she “conspired with and solicited multiple third parties to murder,

harass, surveil, and retaliate against victims and witnesses in her criminal and civil cases.”

Jeffco investigators found evidence that Emmi “has also been conducting research on and targeting numerous persons involved in her cases as well as their uninvolved family members. ... (She) has contacted numerous third parties, alleging that her estranged husband and his girlfriend have kidnapped, brainwashed and are abusing her children as a long-term plot to frame (her), of which (the investigator) found no evidence,” the affidavit said.

Emmi and her husband began having marital problems in January 2019, and when her husband threatened divorce, Jennifer began to complain of various illnesses, according to the arrest affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Emmi threatened to harm one of the children and is alleged to have hurt one of them. The Canyon Courier is choosing not to provide details to not further harm the

Investigators also learned that Emmi approached another man who had been a trained military sniper about killing people for her, according to the affidavit.

Neither has been charged with a crime.

Emmi repeatedly texted and emailed her husband and his girlfriend, conducted internet searches on “how to get rid of the other woman for good,” and tried but failed to have U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement deport the girlfriend to Brazil, the affidavit said.

Emmi’s attorney said Emmi cares deeply about her kids and wants to be with them again.

“This is not something that is going to have a quick resolution,” Bresee said of the court proceedings ahead of Emmi.

SPORTS Evergreen zeros in on 4A Jeffco boys hoops title

LAKEWOOD — Evergreen is officially the front-runner in the race for the Class 4A Jeffco League boys basketball title.

The Cougars — ranked No. 7 in last week’s CHSAANow.com 4A boys hoops rankings — took a one-game lead in the conference with a 54-41 victory over No. 12 Green Mountain on Feb. 10 on the Rams’ home court.

“It’s a huge game. This puts us in a good spot to run the table the rest of the way,” Evergreen senior Jackson Mott said of the Cougars winning the conference title.

It has been a while since Evergreen has claimed a boys basketball league title. The 2003-04 season was the last time the Cougars won a conference crown.

“It was kind of revenge. We had these guys and Golden marked on our calendars,” Evergreen senior Griffin Lauritano said. “This is a really tough place to play against a really well-coached team. To get a win like this was good. Now, we control our own destiny. We just have to take care of business the rest of the way.”

Evergreen finished tied for fourth in 4A Jeffco last season. The seniorladed Cougars had a clear focus this season on ending the league championship drought. Evergreen has three more league games — Conifer, D’Evelyn and Alameda — that count

Virtual meet serves as way for Evergreen swimmers to connect, get better

There were timers for each line.

Swimmers, too. And a couple of officials assigned to meet Saturday morning at Marge E. Hudak Pool in Bailey. The only thing missing — besides your normal crowd of spectators — was an opponent.

Yet, there was Evergreen High School’s girls swim team competing in its virtual meet against Chatfield on Feb. 13.

“With this type of meet, you just have to race against the clock and against yourself. That’s really the best way to push yourself,” EHS senior Sophia Gurrieri said. “… It is a big mental game. It’s a big part of swimming, the mental part of it.”

By 9:48 a.m., 48 minutes after it started, the meet was over or just beginning depending on how one looks at it. After all, the Chargers didn’t take to the pool for another eightplus hours almost an hour away at Littleton High School.

But, at least, Evergreen’s portion of the meet was over, and it was faster than a normal practice, which, according to head coach Liz Hudd, is usually an hour. Even though the circumstances, Hudd wasn’t wor-

She knew the Cougars would be.

“The kids know (what to do). For

the history I’ve been coaching — 20 years — at Evergreen, come competition time they bring it. It didn’t

matter that there was no opponent here today. It was them against the clock,” Hudd noted.

Even so, if Hudd needed a motivator before the meet, all she had to do was talk about where her team was ranked presently in the state. With just the top 20 qualifiers going to state this season, it’s imperative that the two-time 3A state champions qualify as many swimmers in each event as possible if they want to threepeat.

“We’re seeded well in the state right now, but the girls aren’t even close to their best time. (But) I’m feeling optimistic,” Hudd said.

“Some of the girls are swimming a little bit off, but that’s to be expected. Two to three weeks ago they were swimming only 4 hours a week, which is nothing.”

Host Chatfield, a 5A school, won the meet, 344-153, but Evergreen had its share of successes.

Taylor Jacobson and Gurrieri finished one-two in the 100 butterfly in 1 minute, 6.66 seconds and 1:07.02, respectively. Gurrieri’s time was good enough to push her into the top 20 in the state in 3A. Evergreen also had five of the top SEE SWIMMING, P16

Lobos show improvement after slow start Conifer’s boys basketball team held its own after falling behind early at Standley Lake

WESTMINSTER - The final score doesn’t do justice just how well the Conifer Lobos boys basketball team played in the final three quarters against host Standley Lake on Feb. 8. Unfortunately, it was the first quarter — more specifically the first 4 minutes — that was the Lobos’ undoing.

Standley Lake, behind a combination of 3-point shooting and backdoor cuts to the basket, scored the game’s first 17 points and never looked back in a 61-36 victory.

Jake Latzer scored a game-high 20 points — 18 in the first half — and Sebastian Meadows added 13, including four 3-pointers, to pace the Gators (2-4).

“We were all prepared. We knew that we’ve been putting in the work in practice, so we came out and played our game,” Latzer said.

Still, Conifer (0-6), which has lost by an average of 40.5 points per game this season, held its own after the Gators jumped out to the early lead.

doesn’t indicate what we want,” Conifer head coach Patrick Fairchild said. “This is probably the proudest we as coaches have been of the kids, too. The energy was there on the defensive end. The kids were flexible, and we started throwing some different things at them defensively and the kids were ready to do it.”

Though the Lobos continue to grow after graduating four of their top five scorers from a season ago, senior Ben Lack can see the development coming, especially on the defensive end. That was evident against the Gators, especially over the final 19 minutes where Conifer was only outscored 25-23. “(It was) just the defensive intensity really. We were getting on the boards in the second half, switching on defense and talking,” said Lack, who finished with a team-high 12 points — 11 of those in the first half. “(We were) doing all the things right

Pendant a blessing for winner, INSPIRE program

A drawing for a pendant was a great Valentine’s Day gift for both the winner Natasha Stringer and the Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s INSPIRE special needs program.

Natasha Stringer of Evergreen won a diamond necklace Friday in a drawing sponsored by Pandora John Properties. Stringer’s son, Timothy, has participated in the INSPIRE program before he died last fall.

“When I bid on the necklace, I had a thought that winning this necklace would be the sign of Timothy reaching out to me, sending his love from the great beyond, transcending time and space,” Stringer wrote in a statement. “The necklace design reminded me of both a blossom and sunshine, so when I saw the pendant, I thought of how it reminded me of

Weege said he met with Denver Mountain Parks, the Bureau of Land Management and Jeffco Open Space officials, who believe a 107-year-old law might allow the land to be used for the fire station.

The property was owned by the Bureau of Land Management, which gave it to Denver Mountain Parks with

park-use restrictions. Those restrictions must be lifted for EFR to acquire the property and use it for the new fire station.

The new building will replace the existing Fire Station No. 1 on Highway 73 near downtown Evergreen that is more than 50 years old. The new building is expected to cost around $8 million. The district already has spent about $1.5 million to purchase land.

The new station will have about a dozen bays for trucks, office and meeting space, crew quarters, and parking for paid and volunteer staff, according to the request for proposals.

Some rockets soared high into the air, aided by a brisk wind that sent students scrambling to retrieve their creations. Others had launching difficulties, and students worked to figure out if there were problems with the rockets or the launch pad.

Seventh graders Grace Middleton and Kiera Ginter named their rocket the Queen of Hearts, and they hoped their rocket would do them proud.

Mellon said students had created rockets the past two semesters, but fire restrictions prevented them from being launched.

Eighth grader Shelby Lewis said she decided to take the class because she enjoys science, math and technology, and the skills they were learning would translate into adult life.

“Building the rockets was a great idea,” Shelby said. “I really enjoyed it.”

Principal Chris Gould called the STEM class a way to give students different learning opportunities.

Some students are looking for a more traditional education that will set them up for college, while others are interested in more hands-on learning.

“We are giving (students) a way to find out more about their passions,” Gould said.

Rockfall work done on Highway 74

Rockfall mitigation work is

complete on Highway 74 between Idledale and Morrison, and the road is now open to travelers.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said 6,000 tons of rock — about 400 trucks full — have been removed from the rock walls in Bear Creek Canyon since the project started in September.

In addition to removing rock, crews installed new rockfall mesh and other rock reinforcement to prevent rockslides.

ASPEN PARK – Munchie slouched into the mini-mart on the morning of Jan. 19 and tossed a bag of chips on the counter in front of Clerk. Efficiently ringing up the salty snack, Clerk asked if Munchie “needs anything else?” Munchie apparently missed the question, and he certainly missed the helpful spirit in which it was posed. “I can’t hear anything you say over that (funky) music!” Munchie complained. When Clerk told Munchie that there was no call for “that type of language,” Munchie tried his hand at non-verbal communication, driving his fist through Clerk’s protective plexiglass shield and storming out without his chips. Clerk reported the intemperate transaction to JCSO, telling deputies that he didn’t want to press charges, but did want the incident documented.

CONIFER – Tom said he’d asked his ex-wife, Katie, to leave after she started getting on him about his dating habits, but she’d refused to go. Katie said she and Tom “shouldn’t have been divorced in the first place, but that’s a long story,” and that Tom has been helping

her study for her Real Estate exam for the last three weeks. Sometimes those late-night tutorials end with a pop-quiz in biology, wink-wink, and that the argument wasn’t really all that bad, and that Tom had only asked her to leave once before calling the cops, and that anyway she had a contract. While the bulk of Katie’s recitation may have been interesting in a biographical sense, it was the referenced contract that caught the officers’ attention.

Continuing, Katie explained that the iron-clad divorce contract she and Tom both signed provided for both to possess keys to the other’s residence, which meant she had a legal right to remain. Given that information, plus the fact that Katie’s name was still on Tom’s lease and that a lot of her stuff was still there, deputies determined that she was not trespassing. They also determined that somebody should probably leave before things got ... er ... complicated. Katie grudgingly departed for the evening and took her key with her.

The bigger man

EL RANCHO – Deputies had been to the address so often they probably could’ve driven there in

their sleep. And they’d heard so many complaints from the feuding neighbors, they probably could’ve written their report of Jan. 22 without bothering to drive out there at all. According to Hatfield’s latest beef, somebody had removed a bunch of “No Trespassing” signs from the fence separating his and McCoy’s properties, and stolen “three colorful flags” that had very recently waved above that disputed frontier. Hatfield had little doubt who was behind the thefts, and deputies couldn’t help but share his suspicions. Contacted for comment, McCoy freely admitted stealing the signs and filching the flags, explaining that the fence was “shared” and he “didn’t want to look at them anymore.” McCoy also objected to Hatfield’s sign reading “Trespassers Will Be Shot, Survivors Will Be Shot Again” because he feared it would discourage his children from playing outdoors. Lastly, McCoy told the officers that he fully intended to “drop” the missing materials “near the property line” at his first opportunity. Informed of McCoy’s confession, Hatfield vowed to press charges. Beginning to lose patience, deputies asked Hatfield exactly how long he intended to keep stoking

his petty and unproductive war with McCoy. Hearing it put that way, Hatfield agreed that endless backyard bickering was getting him nowhere and withdrew the complaint. Henceforth, he assured officers, he would stop dialing 911 and start conducting hostilities in the more dignified setting of civil court.

EVERGREEN – Summoned to referee a family dispute, deputies learned that Dad and Daughter had been arguing. Pushed back to her own 20 with the clock running out on a fourth down and fresh out of timeouts, Daughter attempted a bold “Hail Mary” gambit, hurling a 19-inch Toshiba flat-screen through a six-panel hollow-core door. Dad said he didn’t want Daughter charged with a crime, but would like the officers to explain to her why acting out in that fashion is “inappropriate.” The deputies detailed “the implications of these actions and what affect criminal charges could have on her future.”

Satisfied with the lesson, Dad said he’d take the cost of a new TV and door out of Daughter’s anticipated “cheerleading expenses.”

Clear Creek Canyon closing overnight

BY STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is closing portions of U.S. Highway 6 through Clear Creek Canyon to overnight traffic, for tunnel repairs.

The closures will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday nights through Thursdays, and be completed by mid-March, weather permitting.

Feb. 15-18 , U.S. 6 will be closed between the U.S. 40 junction and CO 119. The detour to Black Hawk and

Central City will be to take U.S. 6 between Golden and CO 119.

Feb. 21-Feb. 24, Feb. 28-March 3, and March 7-10 the highway will be closed between CO 58 in Golden and the CO 119 junction. The detour will be to take I-70 west to Exit 244, and then take U.S. 6 to the CO 119 junction.

CDOT opens survey for drivers who use I-70 corridor

The Colorado Department of Transportation is conducting a survey of recent travelers on the I-70 mountain corridor to the west of Denver.

The purpose of this study is to understand drivers’ travel patterns

and preferences when using the I-70 mountain corridor. CDOT is asking anyone who has used this part of I-70 in the last nine months. Participants who qualify for and complete the survey can be entered for a chance to win one of 10 $100 Amazon gift cards.

Jeffco Public Library expands access to event with author Isabel Allende after unprecdented interest Library now allowing up to 3,000 people to register, attend

The Jefferson County Public Library is taking steps to ensure more people can watch a virtual event with the author Isabel Allende after initial registration for the event saw unprecedented interest.

The event with Allende, who is known for writing “The House of the Spirits” and other magical realism novels, is scheduled to take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on March 5. Allende will be interviewed by Kali Fajardo-Anstine, an author from Colorado.

On Feb. 1, the library opened up registration for the Zoom event, which then a capacity of up to

1,000. However, after more than 1,200 people tried to register in just five days, the library has expanded the capacity for the event to allow up to 3,000 people to take part in it.

Those interested in the free event can once again register at jeffcolibrary.org/isabel-allende/, although the library warns that it still expects the event to fill up even with the added capacity.

Allende plans to discuss her new memoir, “The Soul of a Woman” with Fajardo-Anstine. Released this year, the memoir focuses on the author’s lifelong drive to empower girls and women.

Born in Peru to Chilean parents, Allende watched her mother struggle to raise three young children without appropriate resources or support, an experience that led her to a lifetime of advocacy for girls and women. In the book, Allende writes about what feeds the soul of all women “to be valued, to be safe, to have their own resources, and above all, to be loved.”

customers are few, so entering the businesses is “super safe.”

The reason she liked the Chocolate Walk idea was, first, because it’s about chocolate, and second, because any business can participate.

Eateries can provide chocolate goodies, and shops can find more creative ways to distribute the confection.

“This year,” she said, “the Chocolate Walk is pretty basic. Next year, we will grow the idea and make it bigger and better. I can see a lot of potential to create a really cool following from people down the hill to shop in Conifer.”

Taspen’s Cosmic Grill in Aspen Park was handing out individual samples of chocolate.

“Chocolate is so comforting,” said Theresa Kleinkopf, who works at the restaurant. “We use quality ingredients and make it all here.”

John Baca, the eatery’s general manager and chef, explained that the Chocolate Walk is a good way to showcase his chocolate skills. With truffles, brownies and more in the display case, shoppers looking for Valentine’s Day gifts had plenty to choose from.

He said the restaurant focuses on organic and nutritionally good foods, and that carries over to the sweets, too.

At Brooks Place Tavern, chef Mark Brockman created chocolatecovered strawberries as one of the Chocolate Walk features in addition to other Valentine’s Day menu items.

This event “builds up the community of restaurants,” Brockman said. “It’s important to be part of that.”

Legals City and County Notice of Public Comment Period for Jefferson County Community Development 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan and 2020 Annual Action Plan To: All Interested Agencies, Groups, and Persons Jefferson County Community Development is developing a five-year strategic plan as a requirement of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to qualify for the Community Development Block Grant and the HOME Investment Partnerships Program. The County has the following HUD funding allocations for FY 20/21: CDBG: $1,099,261.00 HOME: $985,434.00 The Consolidated Plan is a comprehensive planning document that identifies the overall housing and community development needs within the Urban County. The Urban County includes the Cities of Edgewater, Golden, Lakewood and Wheat Ridge as well as the Town of Lakeside and Unincorporated Jefferson County. The Consortium’s goals for the five-year planning period focus on: •Providing housing stability and supportive services for low- to moderate-income residents; •Providing low- to moderate income homeowners assistance with needed improvements to their homes; •Acquiring and maintaining existing affordable housing units; and •Providing funding to nonprofits and/or developers for the creation of affordable rental housing.

Additionally, the County is developing its annual Action Plan in concert with the Consolidated Housing and Community Development Plan. The Action Plan is a requirement of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the use of Community Development Block Grant, Community Development Block Grant – Coronavirus, and Home Investment Partnerships Program funds.

The plan outlines planned performance in carrying out the overall housing and community development goals in the Cities of Edgewater, Golden, Lakewood, and Wheat Ridge as well as the Town of Lakeside and Unincorporated Jefferson County as described in the 2020 Action Plan.

Copies of the Draft Consolidated Plan and Action Plan will be made available for review on the

Experienced Social Worker (LCSW preferred) needed to support Palliative Care and Hospice patients and their families. Relevant home health, palliative, and counseling experience preferred. Must be able to provide home visits to patients in the mountain communities west of Denver, including both the I-70 and 285 corridors, and be available for a 24 to 32 hour weekly schedule.

Home health, hospice and geriatric experience preferred for all clinical positions. Our service area encompasses the mountain communities within Jefferson, Clear Creek, Gilpin and Park counties (along both the I-70 and 285 corridors).
