New life to an old farm

T

he Bromley-Koizuma/Hishunima Farm has always had a place in Brighton’s history, and Boots and Shorty are hoping to make it a key part of the future.

Partners Anna Frye and Melody Smith, the Shorty to Frye’s Boots, have a straightforward plan that involves bringing back the historic use of the farm – agriculture – while including the community in a big way. They’ve been involved in the farm as guests for the past few years.

“I sold beef at the former tenant, and they asked me to take part in a fall festival, in about 2017,” Frye said. “I love Brighton and loved the idea to come back and help.” Now they’re ready to take center stage as the managers of the space for the city. She said it should be busy year at the farm, with more planting and a host of community events – at least two events per month all year. SEE FARM, P5

“We’re having our Easter Egg hunt, a car show for youth suicide prevention, a big event for the Fourth of July,” she said. “We had an Old Fashioned Christmas back here last year and we had 50 vendors, and it was a huge hit. Almost 3,000 people showed up.” As old as Brighton The farm itself dates back to 1883, two years after Brighton was founded and named but four years before it was officially accepted. After six years in Colorado getting established, Emmet Bromley was able to purchase 200 acres of land south of the road that bears his name today for his growing herd of dairy cows. The land changed hands a few times for the next 60 years, a constant source of sugar beets and grain crops until 1947 when Yachi and Sen Hishunima purchased 160 acres of the farm, shared with their relatives Mitsuye and Sumi Koizuma. The families and their descendants lived on the land raising their own fruit and vegetables as well as cash crops for local canning companies until 2004. “I know they raised horses and cattle, but mostly they grew forage crops here,” Frye said. “Wheat, corn, like that. We hope to do that again, putting in some alfalfa, the orchards.”

They sold it to a developer in 2005 and the city stepped in, purchasing the central 9.6 acres of the farm in 2006. The farm was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 as the city began looking for ways to renovate the buildings and revitalize the grounds as a living farm, a community garden and a cultural center. It’s picked up $2 million in grants to help preserve the farm since then. Passion for the project Ashe said she and Smith have helped at the farm since 2017, replacing fences and bringing out animals from her farm near Johnston. When the contract with the city opened last year, Brighton approved letting Frye and Smith take over. “They just liked what we were doing,” Frye said. “They loved our passion for the project and kind of the outreach side of what we had done. It’s all about that, about youth education, community outreach. There’s not much money to be made, really. It’s all about bringing it back for the community.” She sees it as recognizing its importance and making it a piece of living history. Frye said she wants to resurrect a community garden, named to honor the Koizuma family, along the Bromley Street entrance.

“All the beds can be reserved by members of the community to plant vegetables,” she said. “We are hoping to start reservations in April for anybody who doesn’t have room in their house or in apartments for a garden of their own.” She has plans to build a public dog park along the rear of the property, a space for raising chickens and turkeys and wants to offer horse riding lessons. They brought in some of their own antique furniture for the historic farmhouse at the center, converting it from basic storage to a visitors center and museum. “This house was just four walls, central with a lot of additions since it was first built,” Frye said. “When we moved our stuff in and starting arranging things, the entire energy in the building just changed, completely.”
