WHAT THEY DO:

Located in the Northridge Shopping Center, Black and Read sells a wide variety of music, books and games. When it comes to music, Black and Read has a little bit of everything, but especially metal, punk, soundtracks, rhythm and blues, soul and all forms of rock. Music is also provided on a little bit of everything, including vinyl, LPs, CDs and cassette tapes. The store’s book selection includes thousands of heavily discounted used books and competitively priced rare books.

For gamers, the store has many board games, roleplaying games, and gaming accessories. Half of Black and Read’s 10,000-square-foot facility is dedicated to books, board games, roleplaying games, gaming supplies, videos, laserdiscs and toys.

Black and Read is open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.

HISTORY:

Danny Graul started Black and Read in 1991 at 7821 Wadsworth Blvd. in Arvada, where the store is still located today. When he opened Black and Read, Graul’s employee base consisted of a few of his friends. Today, the store employs 12 people. Many of the employees there today were once Black and Read customers themselves.

The employees are equally nerdy and geeky about everything here — books, records, games, etc. We take pride in that and try to be as helpful as we can with our customers, whether they’re just getting started in something or have been collecting for a long time. It’s fun for us because we’re so into this stuff.”

Owner Brad Corn started Corn’s Appliance in 1990 at the age of 19. He started the company out of his garage. Today, the company sells hundreds of

In addition to having a large showroom, Corn’s delivers to the Arvada and Denver metro areas, and installs and does in-store repairs. WHAT THEY DO:

La Estrellita serves several types of soup with the menudo cooked in a rich, spicy southwestern chile broth with honeycomb tripe hominy and the tortilla soup simmered in a savory, spicy broth with chicken corn, red bell pepper topped with avocado and crisp tortilla strips.

If you prefer a light meal, the fajita salad is served with marinated grilled chicken or steak, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, tortilla strips, mixed greens, and a choice of dressing.

They also have a variety of appetizers, from spicy chicken wings, a star sampler with nachos supreme, cheese quesadilla, one beef and chicken taquito, and chile con queso. The main menu offers several main dish specialties, the spicy fish tacos served with grilled tilapia, jalapeno salsa, and caramelized onions.

La Estrellita also serves up a variety of tacos dishes such as pork, Indian tacos, and several types of burritos, stuffed sopapillas, and carne asada.

They are open for breakfast serving loaded burritos and huevos rancheros. In addition, offer office gluten-free dishes on request.

HISTORY:

La Estrellita opened in Fort Lupton from 1955 to 1968 by Salome and Stella Montoya, serving traditional authentic cuisine. Then in 1986, after being laid off from Adams County, their son John opened the restaurant in Brighton in a tiny section with a kitchen where it is today. In 2011, John’s daughter, Gina Von-Ah, and her husband took over, continuing the tradition and expanding the restaurant with an outdoor patio.

WHAT THEY DO:

The store’s owners, Tammy and Steve Crosier, who fell in love at a Bruce Springsteen concert, found joy in sharing their passion for music with the community. For the past 35 years, Bogey’s West Music has remained a hub for music lovers and a place where stories of pain, love, and the power of music are shared and cherished. The store specializes in vintage

vinyl, offering remastered and reproduced editions of classic albums like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Their collection includes both used and new vinyl. The store goes beyond music, offering a range of items such as tapestries, posters, incense, smoking accessories, stickers, jewelry, and even a revival of cassette tapes. Bogey’s West Music continues to cater to a diverse clientele, attracting customers of all ages, from teenagers to baby boomers.

HISTORY:

Bogey’s West Music has a rich history that began with its doors opening on August 8, 1988. The idea to open a record store in Castle Rock, Colorado came from the realization that there was a lack of such stores in the area. Over the years, they have weathered the challenges posed by streaming, downloading, and the rise of digital media. However, their passion for music and dedication to vinyl records kept them going.

Founded in 2013, Curate Mercantile has a fascinating history rooted in the vibrant community of Centennial. The owner, Karli Millspaugh, began as a vendor herself, specializing in vintage furniture and antiques alongside her mom. After frequenting pop-up markets

operate brick-and-mortar stores that rent out smaller spaces to vendors, allowing them to create an authentic store experience tailored to their brand. They have made significant updates since winning the award in previous years including reorganizing the store layout and enhancing the shopping experience with new sections such as men’s apothecary items, grooming products, reusable shopping bags, and stylish seasonal home decor.

and being asked about her store, she sought out spaces like Curate Mercantile. With limited options and long wait lists, finding Curate Mercantile, albeit under a different name, was a special moment. Having started with just a simple 10x10 space, Karli now owns three locations.

Just Peachy Day Spa is a family-owned business that opened in December 2022. The Kuhn family is local to Kiowa and has lived in the area for 25 years. The spa is housed in a modern, Southern-style

including infusions, hormone therapy, and Botox treatments. Every service provider at Just Peachy Day Spa is an independent contractor and therefore makes their own schedules and appointments.

Just Peachy Day Spa will transform how you feel when you walk in the front doors. Their goal is to make every customer feel a sense of calm, gain a confidence boost, and make sure they feel special. The Nest is located in the heart of downtown Elizabeth and encompasses a wide range of products and businesses. You can find gifts, antique and vintage products, clothing, women’s accessories, Christian gifts, baby clothing and baby gifts, Jeff Struthers photography, along with locally made soaps, lotions, candles, honey, pottery, and jam. The Nest also offers watercolor classes on Tuesdays and Fridays

HISTORY:

Jennifer Fleming and Linda Bulmer have been friends and business partners for 17 years. Fleming and Bulmer started their business in 2019, purchasing the Historic 1897 House for their business in 2020. The Historic 1897 House was originally built to house railroad workers

and the owners plan to expand their class offerings in the near future. The class space is located upstairs at their Twigs location. The space is open to the community for those who would like to host a class as well. Upstairs in the Historic 1897 House, you will find a busy hair and nail salon that offers a wide range of services. Hannah, Cassidy, and Michelle do a great job making sure you go out the door looking and feeling fabulous.

Breakfast on Broadway has been delighting patrons since its inception in 2007. It was founded by Caroline and Val Erpelding. With Val being a seasoned chef weary of working nights, the

Lori Marcin knows a lot about grooming dogs. In the profession for 30 years, Marcin and her team are interested in pampering your pet, whether they need a wash and brush, de-shedding or even if your pooch has had an altercation with a skunk.

She has taken her business even further by becoming a certified pet aesthetician. A lot of dogs have skin issues in the mountains, Marcin explained, and Soggy Dog is able to help. This time of year, Marcin can recommend skin treatment in conjunction

with what a veterinarian prescribes to help restore the skin and do away with the dog’s incessant scratching due to allergies and hot spots.

Soggy Dog Grooming has landed in its new location in the back of Evergreen Animal Hospital in north Evergreen. Owner Lori Marcin bought the business in November 2020, moved it, and says her clientele has exploded in the two-and-a-half years she’s owned it.

In the past 15 years, customer service has taken on a different meaning, and people really appreciate the kind of customer service Sisters & Company offers.

Based on customer feedback, the shop now offers more clothing than it had in the past, and that has been a good fit for the shop and customers alike. If you have an event to go to and don’t want to go down the hill to find an outfit, Sisters & Company is the place for you.

Golden Paws Animal Hospital provides veterinary care for dogs and cats in Golden and beyond, offering preventative care and, when necessary, on-site surgical procedures. The business’s team of 30 employees aims to meet pet owners where they’re at, both figuratively and literally, according to owner and veterinarian Dr. Sam Lane. These “wonderful, compassionate people” seek to remove barriers to care by working with clients to help them understand price and prioritize what’s important to them regarding their pets. Lane says he loves the creativity that owning his own business affords him. Holding charity events, supporting schools, and partnering with other local businesses allows the hospital to live out its core values and be part of the Golden community that it calls home.

Golden Paws Animal Hospital opened its 4,500-square-foot facility off of state Highway 93 in 2016. Three years later, Lane partnered with a pet groomer and launched Grooming @ Golden Paws about a mile south of the hospital. And while the veterinarian practice has always made some house calls, Golden Paws debuted a mobile exam room last fall — allowing the business to physically go to Evergreen, Coal Creek Canyon, or wherever it’s needed by customers and their animals.

Indulge Bistro & Wine Bar offers upscaling dining for lunch, dinner and happy hour seven days a week across the Front Range. Originally conceived as a tapas bar at its first location, Indulge quickly added larger entrees like steak, salmon

and pasta dishes as well as burgers, specialty salads and artisan flatbreads to its menu. The establishment also has a kid’s menu, chef specials in the evening and brunch fare on the weekends.

Indulge’s wine list boasts over 60 selections — each available

by the bottle or by the glass, in either 6- or 9-ounce pours. For customers wanting to compare several wines at once, there are a handful of cleverly named wine flights to choose from. The restaurant’s full bar offers beer and cocktails, as well.

Indulge’s 3,800-square-foot space in Golden was designed to be comfortable, chic and fun, says co-owner and former Golden resident Delinda Fatianow. And a patio, recently covered, allows guests to enjoy Colorado’s beautiful weather with their food and drink.

HISTORY: Wine-loving, husband-and-wife team Delinda and Peter Fatianow opened the first Indulge in Highlands Ranch 15 years ago. The Golden location opened in 2012 and a third Indulge was added at The Streets of SouthGlen in Centennial in 2018. Indulge has also been responsible for the food and libations at the clubhouse of BackCountry, a gated community in Highlands Ranch, for nearly a decade.

WHAT THEY DO

Metro Denver Farmers Market is a unique non-profit farmers’ market run by five local farmers who have been in business for as long as the market has been operating. These farmers also serve on the board of directors, making the market more like a family where each farmer is a co-owner. The market takes place on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and brings together local merchants, food vendors, and farmers from the local and state area, including regions such

as the Western Slope, Pueblo, and Hudson. Visitors to the market can expect to find a wide variety of fresh produce, flowers, clothing, and other locally made products. One of the unique aspects of the market is that the farmers themselves are present and actively involved, allowing customers to connect directly with the producers.As a non-profit organization, any profits generated by the market are reinvested into supporting the farmers, further contributing to their livelihoods and the sustainability of local agriculture.

HISTORY:

As the oldest farmers market in Denver, the Metro Denver Farmers Market has proudly served the community for 46 years. Throughout its history, the market has remained dedicated to maintaining a farmer-centered approach, working diligently to preserve its agricultural roots and uphold the values of local farming.

Bluffs Regional Park and Trail provide connections to Highlands Ranch trails, the East/West Regional Trail, and South Suburban Parks and Recreation’s trail system. The park opens an hour before

sunrise and closes an hour after sunset.

Easy with some hills, 200-foot elevation gain with some grades exceeding 8% in short stretches

HISTORY

The Bluffs Regional Park came to Lone Tree as a required open-space amenity to offset ongoing growth that includes highdensity subdivisions and business openings. The

Bluffs Regional Park is 253 acres that is literally a backyard to many area residents. There is also 200 feet of elevation gain throughout the trail. There are also two viewpoint trails within the loop.

The beauty of the bluffs is that it’s nestled in a populous community with mountain views, and trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. The Bluffs provides breathtaking views in the center of an urban area, making it a unique place to enjoy.”

WHAT THEY DO

Dr. Joseph Arvay is the owner and operator of Spinegeek Chiropractic. His marketing strategy has always been to focus on reminding the public about the safe, natural, and organic approach to health and maintenance that chiropractic care offers.

Recognizing that many of today’s health issues stem from lifestyle factors, Dr. Arvay offers more than just adjustment services for his patients. He emphasizes five key elements for maintaining a healthy body: mindset, the nervous system, nutrition, exercise and movement, and protection against toxins. Teaching these principles to his patients is a central part of his mission and purpose.

Spinegeek aims to challenge the notion that health is solely about treating sickness, emphasizing instead the importance of understanding how the brain communicates with the body.

A little-known fact:w working with babies is common in his office. His philosophy is that health starts the minute that you are born.

HISTORY

Dr. Joseph Arvay has a rich history of serving the greater Denver area with experience as the sole chiropractor for the Colorado Rapids men’s soccer team.

When choosing his career, Dr. Arvay knew he wanted to do something to help people in the medical field. Rather than cutting people open, he wanted to do something more natural and preventative. Chiropractic care was the perfect fit and led him to launch his business in November 1992.

WHAT THEY DO:

Yume Tran owns Indochine Cuisine, a Vietnamese and Thai restaurant with her husband, and together they serve gluten-free, soy-free, and vegan meals.

Lunch and dinner include starters such as pork dumplings and pork or vegetable crispy rolls. Also served are various noodle and wok-tossed and grilled dishes, coconut curries, gluten-free sushi, gluten-free and dairy-free soups, and salads as well as desserts.

Shortly after starting the business, Yume started using natural ingredients to make sauces – which are

used in the Indochine kitchen. In 2009, she created a sauce production company to bottle and sell. The variety of sauces can be purchased on the company’s website, where one can also find cooking videos and a schedule of Yume’s cooking demonstrations.

In addition, Indochine Cuisine offers takeout and catering for events.

The restaurant is open for lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Indochine is also open on Sundays for dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Yume Tran and her husband, Jeff Nghiem, were originally not enamored with cooking at home. However, in 2003, the couple decided owning a restaurant would be interesting and exciting. The rest is history, as Yume and Jeff have been serving the Parker community for 20 years.

Many of our customers become our friends whose kids are part of our amazing staff who are respectful, honest and hard workers. We love being in this community and are grateful each and every day for the privilege of serving this community.”

WHAT THEY DO:

With a mission to provide community service that reflects the diversity of the community, the Parker Police Department is a full-time service. The administrative division oversees background investigations, crime prevention, evidence management, and internal affairs, and trains volunteers. The investigations division is made up of detectives and includes a crime analyst. The operations division are those most visible to the community, the patrol officers.

In 2015, the department began equipping all officers with body-worn cameras to increase accountability. Following a community policing approach, the

department works with the community and offers classes such as the Citizen’s Police Academy and the Teen Police Academy.

The website offers residents a list of community resources and victims and public services. Citizens file a traffic complaint, report a crime, and request a report using the department’s website. In addition, citizens can sign up to be notified of upcoming classes and events, department involvement, and general news about the department and about public safety.

The Parker Police Department also provides emergency preparedness information and classes.

HISTORY:

The Parker Police Department managed the streets in 1983 on a part-time basis. The department was originally headquartered in the old Parker Community Center on Mainstreet. In 1988, the headquarters moved to what is currently Town Hall on Mainstreet, then to Parker Square Drive in 1994, and to where it is now since 2010. The department hit a major milestone in 2013 when it was state and nationally-accredited.

The Parker Police Department is very grateful to be recognized as the Best Government Agency in the Town of Parker, a town with many incredible government agencies. This award wouldn’t be possible without our staff’s dedication to the safety of our community and our partnership with Parker’s residents.”

The Bad Hatchet is an innovative business that offers a unique and thrilling activity that combines the elements of bowling and dart throwing. Catering to individuals seeking an enjoyable time, they focus on creating an environment where participants can learn and have fun. No tournaments or leagues are involved. Coaches are available to provide free one-onone lessons, ensuring that participants grasp the technique and achieve precision in hitting

their target.

A variety of exciting games such as Tic-Tac-Toe, Around the World, 21, and Elimination are offered. Alongside ax throwing, Bad Hatchet fosters a strong social aspect. The recent addition of a bar provides a relaxing space for patrons to unwind.

The company’s commitment to safety and compliance has been well received, as local authorities express surprise at the lack of incidents.

HISTORY

After retiring from law enforcement, Westminster native Justin Sheets discovered the thrill of ax-throwing venues and saw a potential business opportunity. After discussing the idea with friends, they decided to defy the odds and open their doors in June 2021 despite the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The key to their success was in designing their venue with COVID-19 restrictions in mind. The layout naturally facilitates social distancing, with groups staying within their designated lanes.

With 36 years of experience, Korey Stites’ passion for martial arts led him to open a karate school in his hometown of Wheat Ridge, CO. Having worked at a chain of martial arts schools in Colorado, Korey recognized the transformative

The owners, Korey and Sara Stites, are deeply committed to community involvement, evidenced by being awarded Business of the Year twice. Additionally, Korey is an active member of the city council and collaborates extensively with local elementary schools by raising funds for their P.E. programs along with generously offering free classes at community events.
