Roxie Falco of Flawless Skin Studio knows that everyone has different skin and different skin concerns. She doesn’t believe in cookie-cutter treatments, but instead works with each client to discover what is best for them and their skin. Falco has both her aesthetical certification and her paramedical certification, which is the medical side of skin care. She helps clients with a multitude of skin concerns. Some common problems Falco treats are acne, sun damage and aging. When a client books a session with Falco, it is for time not for a specific treatment. This way, every time a client comes in, Falco can focus on what is currently going on with their skin and what can be done to fix it. Instead of using cosmetics as a cover-up, Falco works with her clients to restore both their skin and their confidence.

After working in the beautician industry for many years, Falco opened Flawless Skin Studio in 2013 as a way to help people get to the root of their skin aliments and to instruct clients on how to take care of their skin for the rest of their lives. Flawless Skin Studio moved down the street to its current location three years ago.

“I take such pride in what I do,” Falco said. “I take the time to actually help people and to educate them on how to take care of their skin.”

When a body part or muscle is strained, “out of whack” or not functioning properly, Dr. Jennifer Vaughan, MSPT, DPT, at Physical Therapy Plus can help. Vaughan works with patients to restore normal joint function. Each patient receives oneon-one attention for his or her rehabilitation session. Vaughan treats patients from ages 8 months old to 98 years old with a variety of needs, such as post-surgical rehab, strains/sprains, “prehab” to prepare for surgery and strength/endurance and core training. She focuses on hands-on joint manipulation and joint mobilization to make the joint or body part work like it’s supposed to. She takes time to explain to her patients exactly what’s going on, so they leave her office understanding what the problem is and armed with stretches and things they can do to help at home. Vaughan can be found at the 9-Health Fair volunteering and is also a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner (CCRP).

Vaughan is the sole provider and owner of Physical Therapy Plus. When she started in 2004, the office was located in a one-room office across the hall from their current location and she saw only eight patients a week. Physical Therapy Plus has expanded into a nineroom office to include rooms such as a massage room and a workout room, and she now sees about 100 patients per week.

“Patients know I’m good at what I do,” Vaughan said. “They know when they come in here they’re going to get the service they desire and expect, and they do.”

Christian Brothers is a 34-year-old Houston-based chain. The Castle Rock franchise opened in 2014 and is owned and operated by Steve Peterson, who also sits on the Castle Rock Public Works Commission and his HOA board. In case that isn’t enough civic participation, he also leads the shop in community outreach days, where his staff provides free oil changes and repairs to folks who couldn’t afford them otherwise.

“This is our community, and we love being a part of it and giving back to it,” Peterson said.

The Gym is a lot like Castle Rock: ambitious and expanding, but still a community where people know one another. Housed in a sprawling 15,000-squarefoot space, The Gym offers classes and programs for all comers, including CrossFit, personal training, nutritional counseling, Zumba, boot camp and loads of other group fitness classes. Memberships start at $39 a month for one person or $69 a month per couple, with babysitting available. The Gym’s drive is evident even on their website, which posts detailed daily workouts. From those looking to lose a few pounds to bodybuilding champs, The Gym can spot you.

Owner and president Frances Colombi started out as an accountant, but grew tired of corporate America and bought The Gym out of bankruptcy in 2008. Over those nine years, she’s nearly doubled the square footage, and membership is up tenfold, though Frances and her staff still know most members by name. With donations to local schools and members ranging in age from 14 to 70, The Gym has bulked up into a Castle Rock institution.

“All the competition coming to Castle Rock keeps us on our toes,” Colombi said. “People can find where they feel comfortable here.”

The Old West Bar B Que is the real deal – a nofrills, down-home barbecue joint focused on one thing: mouth-watering slow-cooked meat. Just about everything on owner Randy Sorenson’s menu is from scratch, from the smoky brisket, pork and ribs to the tangy sauces and plethora of sides. Randy even grinds the corn for his cornbread. Stop by between 11 and 2 to snag the Lunch Special: any sandwich and side with a medium drink for only $7.45. Call ahead to pick it up at the drive-thru, or pig out at the indoor picnic tables. The Old West is closed most holidays, but on Thanksgiving, Randy and wife Rita turn out loads of special-order smoked and deep-fried turkeys.

Randy was a mechanic and backyard grillmaster in California, but when he and wife Rita moved to Colorado in the 1990s, Randy built a real-deal covered wagon in his Highlands Ranch driveway, loaded up a smoker, and moseyed to Waterton Canyon to hawk his wares to hikers and fishermen. Within a few years, he had a fleet of wagons, slingin’ grub at festivals and venues around the metro area. Today the wagons are gone, but the smoked meats are as good as ever.

Randy doesn’t spend a lot of money on advertising, since his meats speak for themselves: “Remember ‘Field of Dreams?’ ‘If you build it, they will come?’ Well, I built it,” he said, “and you better believe folks are coming.”

Snooze: an A.M. Eatery, located in the Streets at SouthGlenn, encourages customers to create their own breakfasts, but are well-known for their own unique creations. Breakfast Pot Pie, Snooze Spuds Deluxe and Juan’s Breakfast Tacos are a few local favorites.They also serve up “sammies,” including the B.E.A.T Sandwich, a Peter Paul Rubens and Havana Daydreaming. People of all ages, every religion and all backgrounds gather every day at Snooze, which now has locations in several states. Snoozers, as they’re called, come for not only the good breakfast food, but also because of the atmosphere and servers they’ve come to consider family.

Snooze was born in 2006, founded by brother Jon and Adams Schlegel. Their first location was in Denver, and they had hopes of creating a dynamic breakfast spot that people would flock to for innovative creations and an eclectic atmosphere. Snooze now has eateries across neighborhoods in Colorado, California, Arizona and Texas.

“It’s amazing the amount of love that can be felt over pancakes,” assistant general manager Matt Meyer said. “Coming to work is easy when you are engaged with a community that treats and values one another like family.”

There’s the baseball theme that is impossible to miss and an owner with a cool moniker —“Buzz.” There are four televisions mounted so every patron has viewing access to whatever game is playing, and even a friendly resident ghost named George. But what makes Buzzard’s Big Mouth Pizza so popular is its mouthwatering pizza. Although they don’t advertise catering, they are frequently requested by teachers at the middle school to cater for events. Their most popular pie is the “Rookie,” a mix of peppers, sausage and veggies, and their secondranking pizza is the “All Star,” a meat-lover’s blend of toppings. There is also a gluten-free crust available.

Owner Buzz Buswell had been operating Kiowa Pizza since 1995 when he decided to branch out to Elizabeth. Together with his girlfriend, Connie Marshall, they opened Buzzard’s Big Mouth Pizza in 2012 as a sister store to the Kiowa pizzeria. Initially, people didn’t realize the connection between the two stores, but when word got around, the second pizzeria became even more popular than the first.

“Customers are the best part of my job. When I’m away for a week, I’m wondering how my regulars are doing,” said Connie Marshall, who wears several hats for the pizzeria, including waitress and bookkeeper.

With its long-standing exterior on historic Main Street in Elizabeth, Barnwood Vintage exudes the charm one might hope for in an antique and vintage shop. Owner Shawn Strain affectionately refers to himself as the “shopkeep” (it’s even printed on his business cards). It’s a family business, with Shawn’s son, Garrett, and his daughter, Brittany, contributing whenever possible. (Their dog, Sammy, keeps everyone company on a daily basis.) Perusers at Barnwood Vintage can meander admiringly through an array of selections, including Native American jewelry, unique vintage items (between 25 to 75 years old), some retro pieces (from 10-25 years old), “MANtiques” and a plethora of games and records from the 1980s and ’90s. The oldest item in the store is a Roman coin from 415 AD.

Barnwood Vintage opened its doors in Elizabeth in February 2016. A couple years earlier, Shawn’s lifelong passion for antiques and vintage objects had inspired him to follow his entrepreneurial spirit and start his own shop. Initially, he operated from a kiosk inside an antique mall. He expanded the business several times until it finally made more sense to rent his own space than lease from other businesses.

“Although I do have some stereotypical antique items, my spectrum of demographic is wider than a typical antique store,” Shawn Strain said. “We’re a cool antique store.”

California’s got In-N-Out, New Orleans has Café du Monde and Englewood’s got Santiago’s. Despite its unassuming exterior, the small storefront jammed between a car wash and a thrift store is known far and wide among Mexican food connoisseurs. The little kitchen runs like a well-oiled machine, churning out burritos by the dozen, and at any given time, the sparse lobby is jammed with construction workers and corporate execs alike waiting to get their green chile fix. Although the restaurant’s name is almost synonymous with breakfast burritos, the plucky local chain features a wide-ranging menu, including stuffed sopapillas, Indian tacos, rellenos, and pork chops.

Santiago’s was founded in 1990 in Brighton, and the restaurant soon became an institution, with out-of-state visitors taking green chile back by the gallon. Since then, the chain has grown to 27 locations, as far-flung as Sterling. Santiago’s is immersed in the well-being of the communities it serves, and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for a variety of charities.

Santiago’s was named after St. James, said founder Carmen Morales, because “after all not all new businesses are successful, and we would need all the help we could get.”

Golden Bodyworker is the cornerstone of Associated Body-Workers, a network of independent massage and physical care providers who are in the business of making people feel better. Realizing she couldn’t help every person in physical pain by herself, founder and integrated massage therapist Wendy Armstrong invited others in the healing industry to join her, and Associated Body-Workers was born. Keeping in mind each client’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs, Associated Body-Workers provides dozens of different therapies, including trigger point dry needling, kinesiotaping, Swedish massage, reflexology, barefoot massage and pain relief.

After years of coaching and being a sports instructor, as well as an avid athlete herself, Wendy Armstrong opened her first practice in 2003 at Bikram’s yoga studio in Golden. As her practice grew, she moved to her current location at 1300 Jackson Street in 2009, where she has invited fellow body workers to join her as independent contractors, bringing a wide variety of techniques and modalities to her clients.

“We all are healers who love what we do. It’s satisfying to see change in the body and attitude of individuals once they are out of pain,” Armstrong said.

What they don’t do is turn away any animal in need. As an open-admissions facility, Foothills Animal Shelter is dedicated to caring for any animal that comes through their doors. Making sure pets stay safe and healthy all year long is a priority for the caring folks at Foothills, and they offer standard pet-care services, including lost and found pets, microchipping, vaccinations and spay and neutering, all at affordable prices. Adoptions and Jefferson County pet licensing are also available. The facility serves Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Westminster, Edgewater, unincorporated Jefferson County and Wheat Ridge.

Originally Jefferson Animal Shelter, the facility served as an impound facility. In 1994, Jefferson County re-evaluated its goals, and the shelter became Table Mountain Animal Center, with expanded services. In 2009, the current 33,000-squarefoot facility was built, which includes a medical suite.

“Our goal is to provide the best care possible to every animal that enters our doors and we wouldn’t be able to do that without the support of the amazing and compassionate people in our community,” said Richard Eveleigh, executive director.

The faith-based preschool provides classes for children ages 2½ to 6 years old, incorporating a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on age. Using fun, age-based activities, students are taught a variety of lessons, including bible stories, lessons of faith and most of all, “That Jesus is our friend,” said Deborah Morgans, director of Christ Lutheran Preschool. “I like it because we can be loving and nurturing, not all schools are allowed to do that,” she said. The school offers all day, half day, and before- and after-school classes throughout the school year. During the summer they offer a theme-based camp, where all activities are based around camping. “We have a very fun environment here,” Morgans said. “We are blessed with teachers who have been here a long time and who have great credentials.”

The school began 23 years ago, when there were not a lot of preschool options. It was originally a “Moms Day Out” program, which gave children a chance to interact with other kids, while their moms took a muchneeded break.

“We have a Bible curriculum. Some parents may not be churchgoers themselves, but want their kids to learn the Bible principles,” Morgans said. “It’s good that they can take that home to their parents. I am very passionate about my position. I think I have the best job ever because I get to play with kids all day and they’re so innocent and amazing at this age.”

Quick service, friendly staff and convenience are what Car Wash Express is all about. Customers never have to get out of their car for an exterior wash, which uses state-of-the art technology, and delivers highquality results every time. “We have cleaned 300,000 cars in Highlands Ranch. It is an honor to be one of the busiest car washes around” said wash adviser Troy Trujillo, who enthusiastically helps guide customers through the wash process. Unlike traditional car washes, Car Wash Express offers free self-serve vacuums, free automatic mat cleaning, prepaid washes and express pass lanes. They also have convenient wash plans, some as low as $8 per wash. They also care about the environment, and participate in the WaterSavers program, which verifies they recycle 100 percent of water used.

Founded in 2001 by a team of experts with more than 50 years of combined professional car wash experience, Car Wash Express now operates six car washes throughout the Denver metro area. They use biodegradable, eco-friendly chemicals at all of their locations and embrace the idea that people can love their cars and still love the planet.

“We’re here for the customers, to clean their vehicles well and in a timely manner. Everyone likes a clean car, and we like to put smiles on their faces,” manager Dane Thompson said.

Making sure the spine is fine History

It’s all right there in their name: Well Beings Chiropractic Family Health focuses on family health through chiropractic care. About half of Well Beings’ patients are children, babies and pregnant women. Some of the common problems they work to correct include pregnant women whose pelvises are in an improper position, babies who have become misaligned during birth and children who have sustained injuries learning to walk. Because their practice centers on families, the chiropractors at Well Beings have also received post-graduate certifications through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Well Beings can help patients with many different conditions, injuries or spinal imbalances. Regardless of the condition, Well Beings understands that it all comes back to how the spine and the nervous system relate to our overall health and expression of life.

Dr. Jacob Fletcher and his wife, Dr. Maura Fletcher, took over an existing chiropractic practice seven years ago and renamed it Well Beings Chiropractic Family Health. Well Beings has always been at the same location. They recently hired a new associate, Dr. Elizabeth Edrington. Well Beings receives referrals from many existing clients because of the results they get and the care they give their patients, not just the conditions.

“I love it when kids come running in and jump on the table,” Dr. Jacob Fletcher said. “They are having tons of fun, they give me a hug afterward and they are happy and healthy.”

Owner Tracy Lawson and her colleagues have built a calming, nurturing environment devoted to lifting spirits and cleansing souls of the burdens we accrue. Maha Soul features an abundance of yoga classes at all levels, from “no sweat” to “big sweat,” in a small, intimate setting. Tracy also offers shamanic healing sessions, tailor-made for every client to clear “dark energy.” Acupuncture, special events and classes, reiki, massage, belly dancing, essential oils and “fun, funky retail” are also on hand.

Maha Soul is a relatively recent addition to downtown Littleton, open only since 2015, but the cumulative experience of the teaching staff adds up. A glance at their staff roster reveals a team of more than two dozen passionate, dedicated healers whose knowledge is greater than the sum of its parts.

“There’s so much good here,” Tracy said. “We can raise people’s vibrations and make their days and lives better.”

Jimmy and Lasinda Crane, owners of Cranelli’s Italian Restaurant, “feed family.” When customers walk in the door of the Lone Tree restaurant, they get either a hug or a handshake. “We created an atmosphere that is like walking into a neighborhood Italian restaurant in Chicago,” Lasinda said. “Just like having dinner at home if you were part of a big Italian family.” Cranelli’s serves traditional Italian food, including strombolis, sandwiches, calzones and pastas. They also offer catering services and host quarterly “Wine Dinners,” when they create off-the-menu dinners and pair them with a fine wine. The culinary duo are also passionate about helping students in their neighborhood, and regularly hold “Give Back Nights” and donate a percentage of their profits to a local school.

Jimmy grew up in Chicago, where he fell in love with Italian food. Lasinda has always had a love for food, and a passion for providing good customer service. When the two met and fell in love they knew food would be a big part of their relationship. They both spent 20 years working for other people in the food service industry, in various capacities. In 2013, they finally opened their own restaurant, and called it Cranelli’s, a family nickname that has been used for years.

“Experience is everything,” Lasinda said. “Reservations are recommended, but not at all necessary. Just give us a call and we will do our best to fit you in.”

The Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center (PACE), with its main stage, amphitheater, dance studio, art gallery and meeting rooms, continually strives to focus upon and attract the community in all its endeavors. The PACE Center is dedicated to presenting theatrical entertainment that south metro Denver wants to see and bring their friends and family to. Each January, a Disney production takes the stage, while summer brings family fun like this season’s musical, “Hairspray.” Productions in the fall appeal more to adults — take last year’s “Spam-a-lot”—but the center always keeps things geared toward the community, ra-ther than “artsy” fare aimed at a particular niche. “We’re committed to showcasing local talent as well as national and international talent, a real mix of both,” Cultural Director Elaine Mariner said.

The PACE Center opened its doors in October 2011 following a growing tradition of culture in Parker spurred on by the Parker Arts Council in the 1990s. As Parker grew, so did the demand for arts and culture, which precipitated the creation of the PACE center. Its first focus is on the Parker population followed by other locations in south Denver and outlying areas.

The theater attracts talent from not only the south metro area but the surrounding areas. “Who wouldn’t want to perform to a soldout audience?” Elaine Mariner said.

Going in to Boondocks might be like taking a kid into a candy store — even for adults. There are seemingly endless opportunities for fun: arcade games, laser tag, go-carts, bumper boats, mini-golf, bowling, and of course, food. A behemoth of amusement, it is larger than other family arcade facilities in the area, which creates the appeal of a destination rather than a quick jaunt for entertainment. Boondocks specializes in hosting group events, including birthday parties, corporate team-building events, and school and church outings. Bookdocks workers pride themselves in providing a safe, clean environment for their “guests” to enjoy, and they want guests to “expect excellence” in their customer connections, offerings and facilities.

Given its thriving family environment, it was perhaps surprising that Parker had gone so many years without a dedicated place for family amusement activities. The bowling alley closed in the 1990s and mini-golf on Twenty Mile shut down a few years ago, too. Enter Randy Fullmer, a developer with Boondocks Properties. He identified the need and a year-and-a-half from the application approval by the town council, Boondocks opened its doors in December 2016.

Fika likes to view itself as Parker’s living room, where people gather and hang out. It’s a place to meet and reconnect. You know you’re not in a coffee chain store when the management encour-ages patrons to sit at the bar and chat — even with the baristas as they work. Fika serves up a more personal customer experience along with its high-quality Kaladi coffee, teas and pastries. Each of the two locations provides a particular appeal: Old Town Parker’s location on Mainstreet has cozy and eclectic appeal, with foreign currency papering the walls (a tradition that began when a buddy gave the owner an Iraqi dinar from his time overseas). The Idyllwilde Fika is sun-ny and tranquil, with lots of windows, a wrap-around porch and a fireplace.

Josh Rivero and his wife, Anna, purchased what was then 20 Mile Coffee House in April 2008. They bought the business at the start of the recession, which Josh believes may have helped them succeed. People seemed to identify with the mom-and-pop aspect at a time when big business was considered the outsider. The Riveros chose the Swedish name Fika in part because it is a word most people don’t know, unless they ask or read the sign hanging over the door—Fika: to meet or converse over coffee.

“I like to think of Fika as the daytime version of ‘Cheers,’ ” said Josh, referring to the 1980s sit-com about a popular bar and the camaraderie of its patrons.

Applewood Dental is a traditional family practice where the focus is on the individual patients, their comfort and their dental health. Applewood provides care for the entire family, from children as soon as they get their first tooth to geriatrics. The office is quiet and friendly, intentionally relaxing for those who may be anxious about dental care. The dentists take their time with each patient, because quality is important to them, and they strive to provide preventative and conservative dentistry, while serving the individual needs of each patient. In addition to regular cleanings, Applewood Dental does professional teeth whitening, fillings, deep cleanings, veneers, crowns and other dental procedures. They also offer free consultations and second opinions. Applewood Dental’s goal is to provide excellent dental care and develop strong, lasting relationships with their patients.

Dr. Tiffany Manzo and Dr. Erin Cettie met while providing part-time nursing home dental care. Although they were both working for practices at the time, they decided they would enjoy working together. So in 2015, they purchased an existing practice from a retiring dentist. They kept the location, but changed the name to Applewood Dental.

“We’re here to provide a service to our patients,” Manzo said. “Rather than doing as much dentistry as possible, we take our time and get to know people and build relationships.”
