Behind the Brews - an introduction Over the past few years, the craft beer trend has been booming across the United States, and Colorado’s no exception. Here in the state, breweries have been popping up in droves since the recession, with 232 craft brewers licensed as of 2013. Last year the craft beer industry in state brought $826 million in revenue. In Arvada, at least three craft brewers have started up in past years, bringing two microbreweries and a brewpub to the community. Over the next few months, The Arvada Press will dive into the action behind these three: Arvada Beer Company, Yak N Yeti Brewpub and Odyssey Beerwerks. Spotlight on the Arvada Beer Company Neighborhood brewers bring homebrewing to a craft scale

I

n 1988, Cary Floyd tasted a friend’s homebrewed beer, mulling over the tastes of the hops and spice, and became hooked.

Soon after, Floyd began to brew his own beer, and after a positive reaction to one of his early batches, he knew he was onto something good.

“In 1988 really, there were not a lot of good brews around,” Floyd said. “By my fourth batch, I took a keg to a Super Bowl party, everybody loved it and I just kept going on from there, making more flavorful beers.”

Over the next 14 years, while working as a director for technology mogul, Oracle, Floyd consistently brewed his own beer. He practiced different styles of brewing, created recipes, mainly German beers, such as a Pilsner or Hefeweizen, and developed consistency in his beer.

In 2002, he won his first medal at the Dixie Cup in Texas, and shortly after in 2004, met his future wife, Kelly. He challenging her to make a better beer — and she did.

After winning his playful challenge, Floyd knew not only did he have to marry her, they needed to start a business.

“Beer is an art, and to make beer, is an art,” Kelly said. “To create the recipe, to go ahead and actually brew it and make that beer — it’s an art form that most people don’t realize. There’s a lot of science behind the project.”

A few years and over 400 home brewing medals later, the couple decided to open up a microbrewery, and in 2010, the Arvada Beer Company was born.

“Our concept is to be the local hang-

out,” Floyd said, “You want to come here with your family, your friends, you want to come hangout.”

Located at 5600 Olde Wadsworth Blvd., the Arvada Beer Company taproom sits in a spacious, relaxed corner building in the heart of Olde Town Arvada.

Seating around 150 patrons, the taproom offers more than 60 types of games, catering from 11 Olde Town eateries, and a quiet atmosphere to enjoy a conversation and savor a handcrafted brew in.

“I’m really happy with their location here, and the interest in history,” said Buddy Sexton, 72, a patron of ABC. “I meet a lot of nice people here so it’s a good place to hang out; it’s my hangout now.”

Aligning the walls around the taproom are vintage photographs and posters depicting the building’s former uses, owners and other key points of the building’s 100-year history — an aspect patrons love to talk about.

“This (ABC) is in the middle of thousands of memories for me,” Sexton said.

I was surprised and impressed when I met Cary, because he studied the history of Arvada, and I was impressed around the history he has here.”

Aside from the history, patrons come to ABC to have conversations and enjoy hanging out with one another while sipping one of ABC’s 50 award-winning beers.

“There are other places that serve beer, and other places that brew beer, but the beers here are top of the line,” Sexton said. “The thing I like about the business is, he’s (Floyd) not concentrated on food, he’s concentrated on beer and

brewing, not anything else. That’s what makes them (ABC) stand out.”

On a daily basis, ABC has 10 to 12 beers on tap, brewing three to four beers a week. Five house beers, such as the Gold Line IPA (India Pale Ale), PoolHall Porter, and the Lemon Shandy, with seasonal or special beers, such as the Butter Pecan Brown and Chile Golden Ale are rotating through the taps.

Every month ABC introduces different styles of beer, such as Belgian beers, to help create diversity and fit their and their clientele’s ever evolving tastes.

“It’s fun to play, fun to create, and fun to see what people think, the best part of the job is playing,” Floyd said.

In addition to brewing their beers, Cary and Kelly also attend several beer festivals, host AM 760 Radio’s Colorado Craft Beer Show, and offer a home brewing contest, giving local home brewers a chance to have their beer flowing crisp at 38 degrees out of ABC’s taps.

“That’s where we came from, we’re home brewers, so it’s fun to get the homebrew community involved in the business that we run now,” Floyd said.

Annually, ABC produces around 1200 barrels of beer, selling the majority of beer in the taproom. While they don’t bottle or can, they sell 64-ounce and 32-ounce growlers, and in the future, Cary and Kelly are looking to expand, opening another neighborhood tasting room in western Arvada.

“At the end of the day,” Floyd said, “Seeing people sitting over there (in the taproom), smiling because they like the beers — that’s the best part.”

Yak and Yeti brewer making more than just beer

Fed up with the inexpensive, tasteless brews from Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser, Adam Draeger sought a different flavor, and a craft brew piqued his interest.

“They made it on-site, and it was the only place you can get the beer in the world — that hit a heartstring for me,” Draeger said. “From that point on, I was on a mission to hit as many brewpubs as I could in the world, because that was just really unique beer.”

Following what he refers to as his “aha” moment in 1998, Draeger, then an engineer in Iowa, began to research home brewing, swiftly becoming involved in the home-brew community. Over the next 10 years, he joined several local home-brewing clubs and organizations, becoming a connoisseur of the trade, dedicating his weekends to learning the dos and don’ts of brewing, and perfecting his craft.

“Between educating myself on different beer styles, and the handson and the creativity, those kind of melded together and I wanted to home-brew,” Draeger said. “I was happy being an engineer, but I’m even happier being a brewer.”

A segment of the craft beer movement, home brewing is

a way for individuals to create their own beer and experience brewing on a micro level. As a home brewer, Draeger spent his time brewing, meeting with other brewers and his mentors, tasting their beers, researching what made good beer and developing a deep passion for the homebrew community and the craft-beer industry.

“I definitely became a better brewer. I hung on every word, they told me to try something, and I was definitely going to try it,” he said. “The home-brewing clubs in general got me to want to be a brewer and that ultimately came to wanting to turn pro.”

Now a professional brewer at the Yak and Yeti Brewpub, Draeger still pays homage to his brewing roots. By staying active in the local home-brew community, Draeger helps out local home brewers by creating the home-brew series, working with the KROC (Keg Ran Out Club) home-brewing organization to promote home brewers and working with home brewers to continue the trend of crafting quality beer.

“Home brewers get excited,” said Draeger. “The more breweries you get, the more home brewers you get; the more home brewers you get, the more breweries you get. It’s an upwards spiral — and you can see it here in Colorado.”

After leaving the engineering trade, Draeger moved his family to Colorado, where he sought work as a brewer with big breweries with a big beer culture, such as Avery Brewing Company, Oskar Blues and Great Divide Brewing Company. But after weighing Culture continues on Page 11

Located in a historic house, the brewpub opened as an Indian/Nepalese restaurant, with only three beers on tap. Formerly the Cheshire Cat Brewpub, the restaurant was equipped with a microbrewery, but was in need of a beer culture and brand.

“I had an opportunity to work at a chain brewpub here in Colorado, and I turned that job down to work here,” Draeger said. “I came in here, there was no legitimacy, and I was like: This is a brewery? So I had to make a de-

“This is an inclusive place,” Kajko said. “There’s a lot of different type of people here to have good conversation with, play games with, they do yoga here, and the bike ride — it’s our neighborhood bar, it’s charming and I know people.”

tomers can come, enjoy a meal and a high-quality craft beer.

“If you want something refreshing, a light beer all the way up to heavy barleys, there’s a real broad spectrum,” Gedala said. “Where else can you enjoy authentic Nepalese and Indian food and wash it down with a good craft beer?”

hile running in the same social circles, Chris Hill and Josh Van Riper found they had one thing in common — beer.

Both Hill and Van Riper enjoyed craft beer and home brewing enough to begin working on their shared hobby together, not knowing they would become business partners later in life.

“My social circles meshed with Josh, who was already home brewing,” Hill said. “We started to brew together every Wednesday, and we just got into it.”

Formerly in the marketing and manufacturing industries, the pair understood the business practices to owning and running a businesses, but lacked passion for their respective careers. They instead found passion in hobbies, including traveling, outdoor recreation and beer.

“I’d been in manufacturing for a long time, and at different times run other companies or had my own companies,” Van Riper said. “When I was looking for a new course correction in my career, I thought, `What could I do with my interests and my background that isn’t too scary?’ — I’ve been brewing for around 20 years now, and I thought, I could do that.”

The two have been friends for more than 20 years. Hill worked in several bars up in Fort Collins, and often talked of opening a brewery with Van Riper.

However Van Riper had already tried a career change, and attempted to launch a brewery with a different friend in a deal that would eventually fall through.

Later, over a dinner with their wives, the pair discussed the idea again, and decided to open a brewery – finding the time was right.

“It was on and off and on again, and now we’ve never left the on again stage,” Van Riper said. “It was an easy sale for me. Let’s brew beer, it’s fun! Who doesn’t like that?”

The pair are now the co-owners and brewers of Odyssey Beerwerks, a microbrewery in Arvada.

Opened in May 2013, the microbrewery, 5535 W. 56th Ave. No. 107, has swiftly grown in both in popularity and size. Recently doubling capacity, the brewery regularly produces 120 barrels, or 3,720 gallons of beer in six fermenters.

Located next to the brewery is a large taproom, giving the duo the opportunity to mix what they enjoy best: people and beer.

much beer; Arvada Beer Company is in Olde Town and that appeals to people there and they have the taproom; ours is production — we focus on canning and the taproom because we love people.”

With a focus on beers from around the world, the pair seeks to brew beers customers can’t find anywhere else.

“We’re always trying new things, and we like to showcase new styles,” Van Riper said. “We’re big on quality and like to have fun.”

Currently, the brewery has 10 beers on tap, including five flagship beers, two rotating taps for stouts and India Pale Ales (IPAs), and three to four taps for whatever style the pair feels like creating.

“We like doing beers from different regions and putting our own spin on it,” Hill said.

Wanting to expand their market reach early on in the business, the pair decided to can and sell beer in local liquor stores — a route less traveled in the craft brewing world.

“We knew what we wanted to do.

Yes we wanted to brew beer, but we put together a strong business plan so we can expand and can our beer so we can take it

on our adventures,” Hill said.

With more than 230 microbreweries and brewpubs in the state, shelf space is limited and only a handful of brewers decide to tackle the production side of the booming industry.

“We estimate that 50 or so package their beer for sale at a Liquor Store,” said Steve Kurowski, a media representative with the Colorado Brewers Guild. “Packaging and distribution is not something to take lightly; it’s a very competitive market and a brewery has to work hard to compete with the many other in-state and out of state craft and import brands on the shelf.”

With three of their most popular beers,

the Heliocentric Hefeweizen, the Ghost Drifter Pale Ale and the Psycho Penguin Vanilla Porter already on the shelf, the duo said they are looking to add two more beers, the Belgian Black and Scotch Ale, to their canning line-up later this year.

Aside from beer, the brewery offers a variety of aspects and hobbies to engage the community including food from area food trucks, trivia and game nights, live music, beer and food pairings throughout the week.

But for Hill and Van Riper, brewing is no longer a hobby, it’s a way of life.

“We do it because we love it,” Hill said.

“It’s nice to think I could end up doing this for the rest of my life.”
