Ravens return to the fi eld with a win
BY STEVE SMITH SSMITH@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
It seems reasonably certain that the Riverdale Ridge baseball team was happy to get back on a fi eld and play a game May 5, its fi rst in almost two years.
As for coach Ray Garza, he wasn’t sure what to expect.
“ I was a little worried to start. It ended up working for us,” Garza said. “We have a good core of kids that gel well together. A number of kids have done a lot of work in the time we’ve been away, whether it’s with baseball-related skills, their body. That was the biggest key. These kids had to do something on their own.”
Whether it was the offseason work or the preseason lineup of games so that Garza and his staff could fi nd the right players to fi ll the slots on the team, it worked out well for RRHS. The Ravens scored nine times in their last three turns at-bat and beat visiting Berthoud 9-5.
Dakota Pruitt had three hits, including a two-run single in the fi fth inning to tie the score. Elijah Lofton then added an RBI double to pad RRHS’ lead to 6-4. He fi nished with two hits and two RBIs.
“It was the jitters. We haven’t played in two years,” Pruitt said. “We were just getting those fi rst ABs out of the way, settling into our spot.

BASEBALL

We played the ball we know how to play.”
“Once we got the timing with the pitcher, we made contact, put the ball in play. They made mistakes,” Lofton said. “We played with the lead. Our timing was off, not seeing live pitching for a week or two. Once we got to it, we put the ball in play.”
RRHS had a tough time fi nding a solution to Berthoud’s starting pitcher, Matt Jorissen. He struck out six in 4 1/3 innings of starting pitching.
“Coach Garza did a great job of settling us down in the box,” Pruitt said. “The guys really took to that. We came out slow. But that pitcher was gone after we got a good talkingto from coach Garza.”
“I choked up on the bat, lessened my stride,” Lofton said. “I hit for contact.”
Mason Richard picked up the win. He gave up two hits over three innings. It was the Ravens’ fi rst game in almost two years. Lawson Dawes had a base hit and two RBIs for the Spartans. Jorissen added a couple of base hits.
“It’s more important to win the way we won. As a team playing together, good results happen,” Lofton said.
Pruitt said the win was more important.
“If you’re scrapping, a win is a win when it comes down to the scorebooks,” Pruitt said. “it’s a win. We’ll take a win. We’re looking to put more wins in the win column.”
“We didn’t play very well. But because of those (preseason) games, we were able to have some reps, some practice in order for us to do what we did today,” Garza said. “We’ve gained a couple of good players, and that’s been a plus. We’re hoping to continue to build talent. As we continue to win, we hope that brings in more talent.”
