Foster to become district’s first dual language option school Unanimous board decision will affect 2020-2021 school year

ENROLL AT FOSTER To enroll a new or current Jeffco student for the 2020-2021 school year at Foster Elementary — soon to be Foster Dual Language PK-8 School — parents are encouraged to use digital enrollment site EnrollJeffco.

Round 1 of enrollment, which includes enrollment into neighborhood schools and choice enrollment into all Jeffco schools, will be open Dec. 10 through Jan. 15.

Choice enrollment offers will go out at the end of January.

Next school year will mark the establishment of Jeffco’s first Dual Language Option School, with Arvada’s Foster Elementary transforming into Foster Dual Language PK-8 School.

That decision was made at the Jefferson County Public School’s Board of Education meeting Nov. 7.

In December 2018, Foster parents brought their research and a proposal to the board, requesting the neighborhood school become a dual language option school instead.

As an option, Foster would see all students instructed through the Dual Language Education Program, a Jeffco initiative through which bilingual teachers provide equalparts Spanish and English instruction across all subjects, intended to assist both English speakers learning Spanish and Spanish speakers learning English.

The program currently runs in six elementary schools — Foster, Edgewater, Eiber, Molholm, Lumberg and Emory — with some secondary schools offering elective courses

Under the new proposal, Foster would expand to accept seventh and eighth graders, who would participate in the dual language program through graduation. Arvada High School administration has “made a commitment to try to keep the program going in high school,” said board president Ron Mitchell.

When the finalized proposal was presented for board approval in November, presenters noted that Foster staff has met with the entire community — parents, students and staff of surrounding schools, among other — with individuals overwhelmingly supporting the change.

A major selling point has been that the option school will continue to prioritize acceptance of students who live within the Foster historic boundary, said Foster Principal Leigh Hiester. The boundary extends just north of Ralston Creek, west to Wadsworth Bypass, south to Clear Creek and east to Sheridan Boulevard.

“It’s very important to us that our community is still first on the list for this opportunity,” she said.

Hiester and Renee Nicothodes, Jeffco’s chief of elementary schools, also noted the switch will accommodate a trend that is already occurring at Foster. Students do not have to participate in the dual language program at Foster, and can study in a traditional classroom setting instead. But currently, the school has just four traditional class-

rooms, with 321 students, or 79.8% of students, in the dual language program.

After the school is established as an option, beginning in the 20202021 school year, traditional classrooms at Foster will be phased out.

In 2020-2021, 54 students in grades 1 through 5 will study traditionally, while 348 K-8 students will be on a dual language track. In 2021-2022, 100% of students will follow the dual language track.

Meanwhile, students who do not wish to attend Foster will be assigned a new neighborhood school.

Two neighborhood schools to the north, Swanson and Secrest, will expand their boundaries to the historical southern boundary of Foster, prioritizing acceptance of students who live in the area. Transportation will also be provided to Swanson and Secrest for these students.

The board voted unanimously to approve the change. Each member commending the community members and district staff who worked to get the proposal off the ground.

“I appreciate that you have been mindful of other communities, specifically Secrest and Swanson, and how this can be a positive for those communities,” board member Amanda Stevens said. “I really appreciate that you guys have taken a look at this from all angles, and thank you for doing something innovative. We want an option school that honors our neighborhood families.”

What Is a ‘Smart Home,’ and What Elements of a ‘Smart Home’ Make Sense for You?

Home automation is now mainstream.

Perhaps you’ve heard the term “smart home” used to describe a home which has internet-connected devices that can be monitored and/or controlled from your smartphone.

The prevalence of WiFi in our homes is what makes all this possible. The most widespread example of such a device is the Ring video doorbell which you have probably seen on neighbors’ homes and may have on your own home. Rita and I have one installed on our front door and on the door of Golden Real Estate. If you ring our home doorbell, Rita gets an alert on her iPhone and can see and converse with whoever is there. The visitor wouldn’t know if Rita is home or in Europe as they converse, and even if the visitor doesn’t press the doorbell button, Rita is alerted to “motion at the front door” and a video of it is archived in the “cloud” for later viewing.

If our office is closed and you ring the doorbell at Golden Real Estate, I get the

notification on my iPhone and can converse with you and perhaps arrange to have an agent meet you there shortly.

There are countless other examples of “smart” devices.

For example, we have a car wash closet on the back of our office building, and I’m concerned about the pipes freezing if it gets really cold, so I installed a WiFi-connected device which tells me on an app both the outdoor temperature and the temperature inside the closet. And it alerts me when the inside temperature drops below 35 degrees.

We also have security cameras inside and outside our building which I can view on my smartphone or in the office, allowing me to go back in time to capture suspicious events, such as when our snowblower was stolen last year. I have a similar system at home in addition to our video doorbell.

My Samsung TV is itself “smart” which is what makes it possible to stream Netflix shows and movies.

Even our refrigerator is “smart.” Rita and I can actually see inside the refrigerator on our smartphones while shopping!

A client has an internet-connected garage door opener, which alerts him when the door opens and closes, and he can open or close it from his smartphone — very useful since his detached garage faces the alley and he has no way of knowing if it is open or closed without leaving his house and walking around the garage to the alley.

WiFi-enabled (i.e., wireless) security cameras make it possible to have cameras in places not previously possible. The cameras are powered by lithium-ion batteries that last 4 to 6 months between charges and can be mounted up to 300 feet from their base station. One such application is the wireless camera on the EV charging station in our parking lot, which was once vandalized.

Other applications you might consider would be WiFi-connected moisture detectors in your basement, or smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Baby monitors are a no-brainer, too. As long as you have your phone with you, you’ll be able to see and talk to your baby in his room.

My solar PV system is internet connected, not only so I can monitor it but so the leasing company which has guaranteed a certain level of production can know when it has not produced as promised and can automatically send me a check for the under-production. (I have received two such checks.)

Nest is a big provider of smart home devices, best known for their thermostat, which not only senses occupancy but can be adjusted remotely.

An alternative to lockboxes which is now widely available is the WiFi connected electric deadbolt. If someone rings your video doorbell and you want to let them into your house, you can unlock your door on your smartphone to let the person in and lock it when they go.

There are devices to make any electric outlet “smart” so any device plugged into it can be powered on or off from your smartphone. A variation on that is one with dimming capability. As you can see, there’s no end to what you can do to make your home a “smart” home.

If you want to check out other devices for your home, Google is your friend, or simply go to www.SmartHome.com, which is a dealer for such devices from a multitude of manufacturers, including Ring, Next, Amazon, and others.

Alexa and other “smart speakers” are also “smart listeners” and, like all internet-connected devices, can be hacked, so it is important that you have strong passwords and take other precautions.

Hopefully, the ‘Post-Factual’ Era Will Begin Drawing to a Close

It’s no coincidence that the founding motto of Golden Real Estate was “Hometown Service Delivered With Integrity.” Raised by a New England patrician father and mother, telling the truth was ingrained in me as an essential value, and the willful lying of our current President is what has bothered me the most. And it’s a trait that his Republican enablers in Congress have adopted as their own. But “the truth will out,” as Dad taught me, and I look forward to that happening, beginning with this week’s hearings.

Ballot measure Jeffco 1A doesn’t pass County to make cuts to 2020 budget

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader believes the most valuable asset to the sheriff ’s office is the people who work there.

“They do a great job keeping Jefferson County safe,” Shrader said.

“And we’ll continue to do the best we can, even with a reduced budget.”

Earlier this year, the county stated that it was facing a financial challenge for the year 2020, attributing it to the need to keep up with an increasing demand for services because of population growth.

“The challenge for this year and beyond is that we’ve reached the minimum limit recommended by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the county’s savings account,” said County Manager Don Davis, “and therefore can no longer meet the difference between the increased demand and the amount allowable by TABOR as we have done historically.”

It was identified that about $16.1 million is the amount the county lacked for a balanced 2020 budget and to maintain an appropriate reserve fund next year. To achieve

that amount, the county proposed a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund.

“Many of our citizens think we can just move money from one fund to the other,” Davis said, “but that’s just simply not the case.”

For example, Davis said, revenue from the voter-approved Open Space tax cannot be used to pay sheriff ’s deputy wages.

There are 15 departments funded by the general fund and it is the county’s principle operating fund.

About 77% of the general fund’s revenue comes from property taxes, Davis said.

Property taxes are subject to Colorado’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) cap. Revenue collected beyond the TABOR cap must be refunded to Colorado taxpayers.

As a possible solution to the financial challenges — one that would

avoid budget cuts — on July 23, the Jefferson County commissioners unanimously approved putting the Jeffco 1A question on the November 2019 ballot. Jeffco 1A asked to allow the county government to keep excess revenue from TABOR. However, on Nov. 5, Jefferson County voters decided not to pass ballot measure Jeffco 1A. In Jefferson County, rather than refunding excess TABOR revenue in the form of a check, the county has reduced its mill levy, lowering residents’ property taxes.

Therefore, if Jeffco 1A would have passed, residential and business property tax bills would have raised, said Natalie Menten, voluntary coordinator for the grassroots campaign organization, No Jeffco Tax Hike.

To make up that difference, landlords would likely have needed to raise the price of their rentals, Menten said. And it reflects onto

consumers when businesses have to pay more taxes on their property, contributing to a higher cost of living, Menten said.

“We’re relieved the tax payers and voters saw this was an unreasonable and unjustified tax increase,” Menten said. “It shows there is strong support for the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (and) it shows that the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights does protect citizens.”

The county manager’s recommended 2020 budget totals about $605.3 million, and the general fund represents $217.4 million of that.

This reflects the $16.1 million in cuts.

revenue is spent on public safety and that “the county has a current backlog of over $100 million in transportation projects alone.”

Shrader placed a moratorium on hiring in the spring when he heard of the budget cuts. He said it would have been unfair to hire new people, just to have to lay them off in January, if Jeffco 1A did not pass.

“Things are going to get tough in 2020,” Shrader said. “We won’t be able to hire the staff.”

“The people of Jefferson County elected us to make the tough decisions,” said Jefferson County Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper.

“We’ll honor the voters’ guidance and continue to work within TABOR limits. And as we look forward to 2021, we will engage our community to understand what they feel the budget priorities should be.”

This election season, Arvada voters were tasked with deciding just how much change they would like to see on city council.

Four of seven council seats were up for reelection, with the District 2 seat certain to turn over to someone new — the seat will be vacated by councilmember Mark McGoff, who is termlimited, this November.

The mayoral seat, District 4 seat and one of two at-large seats were also up for election, with incumbents Marc Williams, David Jones and Bob Fifer, respectively, running for reelection to their positions.

All three had at least one opponent, paving the way for four newcomers to potentially swear in by the end of this year.

But voters chose to reelect Williams, Jones and Fifer, making District 2 race winner Lauren Simpson the only new member to join the council in 2019 as the group prepares to make decisions on several topics, including short-term rentals and the Jefferson Parkway, in the coming months.

For the at-large seat, Nov. 8 state results showed Fifer earned 58.9% of the vote while candidate Jeff Cannon received 41.1%.

Williams earned 44.9% of the vote, while opponent Harriet Hall garnered 37.5%. The third candidate, Dave Palm, received 17.6%.

“I’m pleased our positive message carried weight,” Williams said.

Short-term rentals The new council plans to address short-term rentals before the end of the year. On Oct. 21, the city held a public hearing to gather feedback on whether Arvada should permit short-term rentals. Arvada considers a short-term rental, or STR, to be a rental for 30 days or less, often leased through sites like Airbnb.

The current Land Development Code (LDC) does not regulate STRs, but as the rentals’ popularity increases, council seeks to add a new article to the LDC that would either prohibit or allow the rentals.

The council deadlocked on its last vote regarding the issue, with councilmembers McGoff, Jones and John Marriott voting to allow STRs and Williams, Fifer and Nancy Ford voting against. Councilmember Dot Miller was absent.

Looking to a future vote, however, Miller said she would “absolutely vote in favor of STRs, no matter what the regulations are.”

“We have one hotel in Arvada and that hotel is always sold out,” she said.

“It’s a win-win.”

Jefferson Parkway The continuing and new councilmembers may also have more chances to make decisions around the Jefferson Parkway.

The planned toll road will run through northwest Arvada along the former Rocky Flats site, where a government cleanup was ordered decades ago to rid the soil of nuclear contaminants. Some residents and local officials have questioned whether the parkway project will stir up residual contamination and endanger nearby individuals.

With soil studies underway to test contamination levels the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) — Jefferson County, Arvada and Broomfield — is awaiting direction on the project from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

If the government greenlights the project, Williams, Fifer and Jones — the latter acting as JPPHA chair — would favor moving forward with the current parkway plans.

Most recently, in April, the council voted to approve $2 million of additional funding for the parkway. In the 5-1 vote, only Ford voted no, with McGoff in excused absence.

All five previous supporters will stay on council, but even with a proparkway majority, plans could change if the council does not have concrete proof the project is safe, Simpson said.

“I do believe we want that economic development, but I have serious concerns due to the route that has been selected,” she said. “I’m not going to come down hard and say yes or no, but I will not support any project that is not 100% safe.”

Newcomer Lauren Simpson takes District 2 race Voters say credentials, plans for infrastructure influenced race

As Lauren Simpson campaigned for the city council District 2 seat, for months, “I knew I was a little bit of the underdog,” she said.

Though Simpson has had a good deal of involvement with politics — she is currently president of the Jefferson County Young Democrats and works as a foreign policy and diplomacy officer for the Canadian government - she has never held a position at the local level.

She also found herself in a race against two opponents: T.O. Owens, who has been involved with the city in several capacities, including as chairman of the planning commission and member of the Board of Adjustment; and Ethan Lutz, who works as a service leader at an oilfield service company.

“I felt it was a good experience no matter what the results would be,” Simpson said.

By Nov. 8, results showed Simpson had taken the race, earning 44.1% of the vote. Owens earned 7 fewer percentage points at 37.1%; Lutz received 18.8%.

District 2 encompasses the eastern portion of Arvada, with a western boundary that snakes from Wadsworth to Oberon Road, and then up Kipling Street.

The seat was vacated this month

by Mark McGoff, who was elected in 2007, now that he has served the limit of three terms.

Though voters reelected three incumbents in the mayoral, District 4 and at-large races, Simpson suggested that the lack of an incumbent in her race may have incited voters to be more open to voting a candidate with no city experience.

“It’s a bit of everything. No single factor was the deciding factor” in the outcome, she said. “I had a core group of extremely passionate volunteers, and I had several people tell me: `I’m excited to see a young woman stand up.’”

She added District 2 residents told her they particularly liked her plans to advocate for preserving the charm, but providing necessary updates, to the district’s infrastructure.

Noting that District 2 is the oldest district in Arvada, resident Judy Strasbaugh said that Simpson’s commitment to the infrastructure stood out.

“The businesses and the homes here are 60 years old. They’re in need of new families coming in,” she said. “We wanted new blood.

We’re being ignored; there’s no revitalization.”

But in addition, what may be at the core of the “surprising” win, McGoff said, could simply be that Simpson’s personality, and the thousands of hours she and volunteers put into getting out the message through door-to-door conversations, calls and texts, resonated with voters.

“Lauren is a well-qualified candidate and she had good volunteer assistance,” he said. “The main thing I hope for is that the council will continue to work with each other very closely. Even when we’ve disagreed, we’ve disagreed in a good way, and I think that’s the most important thing.”

Simpson said she plans to do just that while prioritizing a number of issues from the get-go. She would like to help expedite the city’s decision-making process on whether to contract with a single waste-hauler, avoiding holding a special election, if possible. She would also like to discuss establishing a hospital within city limits and creating new diverse housing stock options, she said.

“I’m really humbled and honored to be doing this. It’s going to be a lot of work, but it’s going to be worthwhile,” she said. “People can contact me any time. I’m here. I’m available. I’m excited.”

Planning commission OKs plans for Grandview Station Business-owner who planned to buy property plans to appeal city council

After months of activity, an effort to preserve two historic houses on Grandview Avenue came to a head Nov. 5, when the planning commission heard an appeal associated with the fate of the houses.

Business owner Lori Drienka, who owns runs the Eli Ashby Healing Arts Center at 7401 Grandview Ave., appealed a board of adjustment decision made this summer to approve plans for a development to be built on 7315, 7317 and 7318 Grandview Ave. The three-story development, known as Grandview Station, will stand 33.5 feet tall at its highest point and include ground-floor retail space and 14 condominiums.

The board approved the development plans as compliant with city guidelines and Olde Town design requirements, but made a handful of waivers, including for the building’s height and number of stories.

As per current guidelines, buildings in the area should not exceed 32 feet and should not have more than two stories. Following with current plans, Grandview Station will include three

stories within its 33.5 feet.

Opposed to these waivers, as well as the fact that the new development will replace two houses built in the 1900s, Drienka started a change.org petition back in August to stop the development. She has led efforts to petition city leaders and organize the Nov. 5 appeal hearing regarding the decision to approve the design plan.

“They completely glazed over the fact they’ll be removing historic buildings,” she said. “Once you take those houses away, you can’t put them back.”

Drienka has held that much of the historical significance of the Olde Town Historic District stems from buildings like the two houses, which portray the scale and aesthetic of a former Arvada. She believes the houses should be preserved and turned into businesses, she said.

Back around the time Palmer put in an offer on the properties, Drienka also put in an offer.

Drienka says back then she had considered tearing one of the houses down too, “because we were told it needed to be torn down,” she said. Her plans to tear down the house always remained in infantile stages, she said, as she ultimately did not purchase the property.

Further, “we never talked about tearing down the house next-door” to the Eli Ashby Healing Arts Center, she said.

When making decisions, city officials “acted in good faith and in the best interest of the public,” said planning commission chairman T.O. Owens.

Residents like Cindi Kreutzer with steering committee Arvada for ALL the People agree that to replace the houses would be in Olde Town’s best interest.

“This isn’t just a quick decision for me to support this project. This is my hometown,” she said. “But Olde Town is a very special place, and we’re trying to keep it from getting any worse.

There are much better examples of architecture from that time period within blocks” of the two houses, she said.

She added that Palmer “has been more responsive to the citizens of Arvada than any developer ever has been,” putting emphasis on the developer’s offer to relocate the houses be-

fore the development goes up, should anyone be willing to provide a property for the houses to be relocated to.

Kreutzer further pointed to Drienka’s former plans to tear down one of the houses. She suggested that, rather than pursuing preservation because of the historic value of the homes, Drienka could be motivated by her own designs for the property.

Drienka, however, said the need to preserve the history extends far beyond her, as evidenced by the 1,579 individuals that had signed the change. org petition as of Nov. 8.

She now plans to appeal to the city council.

“We would love to have our council review this mess and trust that they would uphold justice here. They should have been the very first government body to hear this,” Drienka said. “I’m going to stop this process in any way I can.”

With bus driver shortage at peak, student athletes miss hours of classtime District needs more than 40 drivers to meet demand

What happens when there’s a school bus driver shortage? A chain reaction, said Autumn Sereno, assistant principal and athletic coach at Lakewood’s Green Mountain High School.

The chain of events begins every time a school like Green Mountain has an after-school event. On game days, student athletes are dismissed early — as early as 12:30 p.m. some days at Green Mountain — so drivers can take them to games before returning for the afternoon route.

By the time athletes arrive at the rival high school, their game could still be hours away; coaches must work with the school to find space for visiting students to wait out the clock.

But there isn’t always enough space for the visiting team — just recently, Sereno said, athletes playing a Douglas County school stayed in the locker rooms at the local football stadium in Parker until their game started hours later.

“We’re talking a couple hours that they’re getting pulled out of classes,” Sereno said. “I know the district is doing everything it can do. To me, it’s a question of how are we going to fix this?”

Bus driver Donna Guerrero, who has driven with the district for three years, stands among the buses at the district’s central bus terminal on Quail Street. Guerrero has increased her overtime hours as a result of the bus driver shortage. “It is stressful, but we help each other out,” she said of the other drivers.

early when possible or hire charter buses.

“There’s a commercial driver shortage that’s not just a Jeffco thing; it’s a national situation,” he said. “We’re competing with ourselves, other school districts and the private sector.

A lot of drivers who would come are going other places because of the compensation.”

The shortage extends across a number of industries, with RTD especially feeling the effects. With a lack of commercial drivers to operate buses and light rails, the transportation district is planning to make temporary service cuts, said RTD board member Shelley Cook.

Jeffco started seeing a declining number of available drivers around 2014, at a time when its number of bus routes was growing. In less than a decade, Jeffco has increased from 65 to 87 routes.

The shortage poses a difficulty for drivers like Donna Guerrero, who became a bus driver in Jeffco three years ago, having first worked as a paraprofessional, or an educational aide, in the district.

“It’s difficult because you’re used to your route,” but driver’s routes often get changed to accommodate school events or employee sick days, she said.

They then find themselves in unknown territory, often working overtime hours as they log extra miles, she said.

In the face of a problem the district cannot control, Jackson said, “on the athletics side, it’s not ideal, but we’re doing the best we can.”

He emphasized that any time the district provides early transportation to an after-school activity, it first calls the school to ensure that student athletes can be released early that day. The district aims to avoid early dismissals before 1:30 p.m., with the vast majority taking place between 1:30 and 2 o’clock, he said.

‘Get a little bit creative’ Over at Arvada High School, student athletes like senior Suezana Gonzales, 17, are used to getting out of class more than an hour early. Gonzales, who plays volleyball and is on the pom squad, said she and her teammates have a 1:30 p.m. dismissal once or twice a week.

What comes after is hours of waiting, with third-level volleyball games typically starting around 4 o’clock and varsity games beginning around 6.

Though students usually have a place to wait at schools they visit, the Wi-Fi connection can rarely support visiting students, in Gonzales’s experi-

ence. As such, she and her friends cannot always complete their homework while waiting.

“We usually just sat there and watched the other games. I’d rather have been doing my homework,” she said.

But Gonzales added that she’s learned how to overcome missed class time and maintain her 3.0-plus GPA. What particularly helps are study halls for student athletes, she said. Arvada High holds the study halls on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school.

“The district is in a hard spot, yet they’re really trying to accommodate and make it work for us,” said Arvada High athletic director Dan Quaratino.

“It’s like an athletic team; we’re all working for the greater good. You’ve just got to get a little bit creative.”

One creative solution: about half of Arvada High’s coaches have earned certification to drive students to and from games, using their own vehicles or one of the school’s two activity vans, he said.

Another solution comes in the form of charter buses, with the district recommending schools work with district-approved charter bus companies to arrange transportation.

But both Jackson and Sereno acknowledged that this fix isn’t perfect.

In Sereno’s experience, charter buses are too costly for the school’s athletic budget, she said.

Dawn Roberts, assistant to the district’s executive athletic director, said the cost to charter may be more than three times the cost of a district bus.

Last year, a team that could not get a district bus to a game in Aurora had to charter a bus for $375, as opposed to the $112.75 a district bus would cost, she said.

District leaders have also done their part to combat the shortage, meeting with a consultant over the summer to reorganize routes, Jackson said.

The summer planning reduced the estimated number of driver vacancies, which was around 65, to a number in the low forties.

However, new wrenches are always thrown into the plan, he said. For example, additional health requirements — such as restrictions against driving with a pacemaker or sleep apnea diagnosis — introduced in the past four years have caused the district to lose some drivers. Other potential drivers are disqualified by drug tests, with the legalization of marijuana significantly narrowing the pool of potential employees, Jackson said.

“It’s sad to see our economy has to take a dip to grow drivers, versus a school bus driver being something people would like to do,” he said.

Even so, one visit to the highvolume, high-morale break room at the district’s central bus terminal on Quail Street, and it’s easy to see that for some, being a bus driver is as fun a job as any.

“I kind of knew what I was getting myself into. I like kids and I don’t mind driving,” Guerrero said. And, even when things get hectic, she knows her coworkers will assist where they can: “It is stressful, but we help each other out.”

I don’t need to win the lottery to provide tender loving attention

A

s of this writing, the nationwide Powerball jackpot is $60 million.

A few years ALCHEMY ago, when it had climbed crazily to hundreds of millions, I was asked what kind of car I would buy if I had that kind of money … breathtakingly exotic, uber rare, obscenely expensive?

Andrea Doray Without hesitation, I answered that I would keep my Toyota Rav4 and find the 1995 Miata I (erroneously) sold

about 12 years ago.

I’ve never spent much time thinking about that kind of money. If such good fortune should come to me, I guess I would simply sleep in, write any and all the time, travel the world, and drive around in my 1995 Miata with the top down.

Yet I don’t need the lottery to give the rest of my life tender loving attention.

As I eye my ever-expanding to-do list, however, I do find items I never get around to, sometimes because of their cost, but more often because of the time and effort they require. Oh, I don’t mean installing a questionablein-Colorado-anyway swimming pool,

replacing all the electronics I’ve ever owned, or picking up the previously mentioned exotic car … although these could be completely legitimate expenses in certain circumstances but are budget-busting choices right now.

My current inventory of want-to-do wishes doesn’t always need the big bucks, however, but rather my time and effort … my tender loving attention. For example, I have a collection of about 20 watches – some merely serviceable, some dramatically dressy, and most uniquely eclectic – that need batteries, except my mother’s watch, which works by winding it every day, a novel concept in these times.

I found out some years ago, though,

that replacing batteries en masse can be an expensive proposition … I paid the bill in polite shock. These batteries have long since lost their lost their power, of course, and I’ll make the effort to get them over to the watchmaker again when my budget permits.

On my bookcases and on the wall above them, I recently arranged framed vintage photographs, fragile newspaper clippings, original artwork and other precious memorabilia. In this new location, the morning sun hits them directly … meaning that each and every day they fade just a little bit more.

Look, I know we’ve stuck you in a world that’s in disarray. We’re a little confused, ourselves. We’re not sure if we’re supposed to tell you to work hard, stay focused and earn good grades because HITTING that’s the key to your futures, or HOME if we’re supposed to stay quiet about it because we don’t want to cause you anxiety, or if we’re supposed to tell you to keep quiet about your accomplishments because you Michael Alcorn might make other kids feel bad about themselves.

Of course, that’s kind of presuming that there are adults anywhere in your life advising you to do anything at all. Too many of you are on your own out there. And the saddest part of that, is that some of you are better off on your own than under the influence of the adults around you.

You go to school, and you sit through your annual assemblies about the evils of bullying, but then you look at the world around

you, and all you see is grown-up bullies. Drive a little too slowly, get yelled at. Take a parking spot, get yelled at. Vote for the wrong person, get yelled at. Heck, vote for the right person, but not be vocal enough about it, and you get yelled at.

Blow the call as a youth sports referee, get yelled at. Get followed to the parking lot and threatened.

I mean, for goodness’ sake, we’ve got “adults” getting in full-blown brawls at a 7-year old baseball game.

It’s no wonder you’re confused.

And, in the meantime, every time you turn on the television or open a newspa… um, I mean, open the news app on your phone, it seems like there’s some new story about how the world is going to end soon.

And then you make the mistake of flipping over to one of your social media apps and the cesspool leaps out at you.

Frankly, I wouldn’t want to try to grow up in this world, either.

Thing is, there’s an awful lot of real beauty here. There’s dogs, for one thing. There’s sunrises, and sunsets, and fresh-fallen snow.

beaches of the Florida Gulf coast, or the rocky shores of California; the majesty of the Rocky Mountains, and the quiet beauty of the high plains.

But, I get it. Some of those things just don’t have the power to overcome the daily ugliness and empti.ness we’ve surrounded you with.

But this can’t be all there is. And it isn’t. I believe there’s something much better after all this. This, this mortal coil, this never-ending drama of knaves and fools, this Shadowland, is just the warm-up act, like the ventriloquist who keeps the audience entertained before Bruno Mars or Kanye comes out. Someday, the grey curtain of this life will roll back with the swift sunrise, and become like silver glass, leading to white shores and a far, green country. A place of such alive-ness that you can smell the color green, and the fruits taste like purple. Where streams of fresh water run, which sing to you of refreshment and

mainly in the south where there are no mountains and little snow, yet Colorado’s transportation infrastructure is in great need of repair and expansion. State support for higher education has been reduced, to the point here tuition costs have made a college education out of reach for many families whose other expenses have risen while their take-home pay has stagnated. Colorado ranks 35th on overall education indicators and ranks 32nd on K-12 teachers pay.

Conservative politicians have gotten elected by promising lower taxes and budget cutting. Their claim is “Good government is less government.” In fact, what people want is efficient, honest government that provides necessary services. Colorado voters should understand “You get what you pay for” and be willing to pay for needed government services that are sadly lacking. The TABOR refund is less than $80 per family, but that money could go to make up many budget shortfalls.

There is a simple, though pricey, solution: take down all these pieces and engage a frame shop to replace all the existing glass with museumquality glass (and probably throw in glare resistance while I’m at it). I just need to find the time to collect them from their precious perches and take them in when I find the funds.

I recently cleared out my flowerpots in the front yard and on the back patio for the winter season. In the coming spring, I’d love to run wild in the garden store to design an

outdoor boutique – a baker’s rack with coordinating pots of herbs, a wooded box filled pansies and surrounded by buckets full of bright marigolds, and engaging metal sculptures on the fence. To save some money, I’ll take the time and effort to pot these beauties myself.

For me, much of the satisfaction is the time and effort these projects require. I don’t need – or want – the $60 million to enjoy providing tender loving attention to get them accomplished.

Denver turns on bright new night light

While most restaurants close for the holiday, some stay open and urge community members to leave the cooking and cleaning to them.

ne of my favorite things about public art is that it encourages artists to think on a grander scale. But the new Denver Theatre District permanent installation goes a step beyond, as it provides artists with an unusual canvas - one of the city’s most famous buildings.

That installation is Night Lights Denver, which kicked off on Nov. 7. The projection mapping installation will project work from local COMING internaATTRACTIONS and tional artists on the Arapahoe Street side of the Daniels & Fisher Tower on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

“In a way we want it to be like the famous Bellagio fountains in Clarke Reader Las Vegas, where it just becomes an addition to your night,” said David Ehrlich, Denver Theatre District executive director.

“You might be out, walking by and stop and hang out to see the work being projected.”

Night Lights Denver partners include the Downtown Denver Partnership, Orange Barrel Media and the Daniels & Fisher Tower.

Projected images will rotate on a monthly basis, and will start with work created by Hungary’s Limelight, an internationally recognized artist collective, Denver-based artists Joel Swanson and Sofie Birkin, and supporting animation by Vincent Comparetto.

The work will begin about 30 minutes after sunset, will run on a loop and restart every 15 minutes until about 8:15 p.m.

To begin with, Night Lights Denver will include art commissions and ambient programming, but the aim is to keep it local and community driven. That’s why Ehrlich and the district thinks of it as “the people’s projector,” with all that implies, including open projector nights, cultural showcases and ways for passersby to control what is projected.

“Since we’ve paid to install the equipment permanently, that’s not a cost artists have to deal with.

Which means we can work with artists of all calibers, including going all the way down to high school,” he said.

Thanksgiving meal alternatives are varied for those seeking lighter fare or less work

or people who don’t care for the traditional Thanksgiving Day dishes, prefer a lighter meal or just hate cooking (and the cleaning), there are options.

Dietitians are ready with advice for altering recipes or bucking the usual courses. And some restaurants stay open so people can leave the work to someone else.

Broomfield resident Jessica Roberts is president of the Denver Dietetic Association and works for St. Anthony North Health Campus in Westminster.

Her first piece of advice for anyone off-put by the indulgent nature of Thanksgiving eating: Relax and enjoy yourself.

“I think it’s important for everyone to remember that it is just once a year,” she said.

Thanksgiving Day recipes are typically high-calorie and high in fat.

There are the cheesy potatoes, sweet potatoes covered in marshmallows and stuffing dripping in buttery goodness.

It’s OK to enjoy the deliciousness, Roberts said, especially in moderation. Most enjoyment from food comes in the first four to five bites, so Roberts

For people watching their waistline or living with dietary restrictions, there are ways to adjust those recipes.

Use olive oil instead of butter when basting the turkey or roasting vegetables. Try a nut-based crust for pies and desserts. For lactose-intolerant guests, make mashed potatoes with almond milk or vegan butter instead of dairy.

Eat the white meat as opposed to dark meat from the turkey and pass on the skin. Both will save calories.

Lakewood restaurant Tstreet Roadhouse stays open on Thanksgiving and does every year, said director of operations Justin Adrian. They offer their regular menu, for people who prefer steak to turkey, but also a special Thanksgiving Day meal with “all the fixings” — homemade cranberry sauce, stuffing and mashed potatoes.

“We’re doing smoked turkey this year as well as regular turkey breast,” Adrian said. “We brine it for 24 hours.”

Adrian said they typically have a packed house on Thanksgiving. They get everyone from single community members to families who don’t have time to cook, most by reservation.

Time constraints and the busy nature of hosting family are among the main reasons people opt to eat out, he said.

The restaurant does close early, with last seating around 8 p.m., so employees on a later shift can leave to spend time with their own families.

“This is for the people — both artists and people in the community,” Ehrlich said. “Anyone can check it out, and if they come up with an idea, don’t be shy about sharing it.”

Schooley wins District 3, but running mate loses to Miller Miller adds an ‘independent voice’ to Jeffco’s school board

When first results came in at 7:08 p.m. Election Day, Nov. 5, Jefferson County Board of Education candidate Stephanie Schooley was shown to be leading over Rob Applegate, while Susan Miller led over Schooley’s running mate, Joan Chávez-Lee — reflecting a split that candidates and voters are now left to analyze.

By Nov. 8, results showed Schooley won by about 7 percentage points, earning 53.4% of the vote. Applegate earned 46.6%.

In District 4, Miller also won by about 7 percentage points at 53.5%; Chávez-Lee received 46.5%.

A total of 164,597 ballots were counted for the District 3 race, and 163,749 in the District 4 race.

The seats represent two of five on the board, with board member Ali Lasell vacating the District 3 seat and board member Amanda Stevens vacating the District 4 seat.

District 3 encompasses the northwest corner of Jefferson County, comprised of Coal Creek, Applewood, Denver West and parts of Arvada, among other areas.

Schooley works as executive director of higher education nonprofit Campus Compact of the Mountain West. Applegate serves on the Colorado Military Academy Board of Directors as secretary and treasurer.

mittees and multiple PTSAs. All four candidates have expressed that, if elected, they would advocate for increased teacher compensation and a deeper, district-wide look into how Jeffco Public Schools could improve standardized test scores.

But the slate candidates were perceived as most aligned with established district values by district unions and several current board members, including Lasell, Stevens and board president Ron Mitchell, who each contributed financially to one or both campaigns.

Schooley acknowledged this perception, saying she supports the district’s general direction, particularly its master plan, Jeffco Generations. However, she added that it’s too soon to tell how she’ll vote on specific issues, as she’ll be approaching each matter on a case-by-case basis.

Meanwhile, Miller and Applegate have campaigned as the “independent voices” of their respective races, Miller said.

They especially highlighted that they “come from very analytical and mathematical backgrounds,” Applegate said, and promised to push for improved data analysis.

As for why slate candidate Schooley won in District 3, and slate opponent Miller in District 4, “I have been thinking about it, and I hesitate to assign any sort of cause,” Schooley said.

Perhaps voters perceived all four of the candidates’ messages as different from one another, instead of as groups of two saying the same thing, she said.

Others still may have wanted the variety, choosing only to vote in one slate member, Miller said.

She also said that she felt the differences between her and Chávez-Lee, particularly related to their approval of district priorities, may have been greater than the differences between Schooley and Applegate.

But even if she will represent the only “independent” voice on the board, her win showcases that the public is looking for some sort of change — and her message successfully communicated that she could deliver, she said.

“Our achievement needs to be focused on the reading, writing and math,” she said. “That’s what our economy is calling out for and that’s what people resonated with.”

Regardless of the outcome, Applegate said the new board members are sure to put in as much effort as it takes to best serve Jeffco students.

“There’s different ways to go about it, but we all want what’s best for the kids,” he said. “I wish Susan and Stephanie, and the three other board members, the best of luck.”

In a press release, unions Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) and Jeffco Education Support Professionals Association (JESPA) likewise expressed hope for future of the new board, despite the unexpected split.

“We are thrilled to have Stephanie Schooley joining our School Board, and sad to see the loss of her slate partner Joan Chávez-Lee,” the release said. “We sincerely hope to work in collaboration with Susan Miller and trust that she will respect our collectively bargained agreements.”

With Schooley and Miller to swear in Dec. 2, the two said they already have plans for their first steps as elected officials.

“First and foremost, I want to begin to get the know the educators and administrators,” Schooley said, “and really meet with folks who represent interests of various kids and start to establish that communication.”

The public is invited to join Regional Transportation District (RTD) Board Director Natalie Menten in a discussion about ridership performance, subsidy levels, alternatives to high-subsidy routes, and potential service reductions due to the Regional Transportation District’s operator shortage.

The agency is facing a worsening operator shortage challenge that have meant bus or rail scheduled runs have been dropped with little notice.

Reliable service is an issue. In addition to the inconsistent

reliability, the RTD agency has been mandating that some bus and train operators work 6-days-a-week and this has stressed the work force over the last few years. The RTD Board is considering temporary service reductions to align advertised service with the amount of available bus and rail operators. The transportation industry is facing challenges in the private and public sector within Colorado and also nationwide.

For those who don’t use RTD but have an interest in how your tax money is spent, you may benefit from this

meeting by gaining a better understanding of the subsidy levels of routes. What are acceptable subsidy levels? Can we offer a better value option for the sales tax and fares paid to RTD? At 3:30 p.m. Nov. 8, a 10-yearold female student was struck by a car while walking on the sidewalk along West 58th Avenue near Dover Street, according to a statement from the Arvada Police Department.

The collision occurred when the vehicle, a white 1998 Jeep Cherokee, veered off the south

side of the road and onto the sidewalk. The driver was initially headed east and continued in that direction after the collision, but returned to the site several minutes later.

Officers now have suspect Jose Manuel Morales-Reyes, 50, in custody at the Jefferson County Jail. He was arrested on suspicion of two felonies, vehicular assault and leaving

the scene of a serious injury accident, and two misdemeanors, driving with no insurance and driving after license revoked.

Investigators say they are looking into whether the driver was under the influence.

The injured girl is recovering in a local hospital, with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Standley Lake dino event digs into regions past Nature Center hosts family event hopes to promote science and nature

A special event at the Standley Lake Nature Center Nov. 16 seeks to dig deep into the area’s prehistoric past.

On Saturday, November 16, 2019, beginning at 11 a.m., the City of Westminster’s Parks, Recreation & Library Department invites kids— and adults—to dig up some dinosaur bones.

Naturalist Lexie Martinez, of the Standley Lake Regional Park’s Nature Center, will guide paleontology lovers of all ages through a hands-on fossil exploration at the Center’s recently constructed “Paleo Dig Site.

The effort is designed to inspire the next generation of dinosaur lovers, and Martinez will have shovels and brushes ready for participants to get their hands dirty as she relays the history of dinosaurs in Westminster.

The dig is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Nov. 16 at the Nature Center, at Simms and 100th Avenue. It’s open to kids and adults, but space is limited.

Martinez created the Paleo Dig Site after a Westminster family donated a cast they’d made of an Edmontosaurus bone. An Edmontosaurus is a type of duck-billed dinosaur that roamed the area more than 66 million years ago.

The Jim Graves family found the dinosaur fossil in their backyard while digging a new foundation for their house. Knowing this discovery could inspire an interest in science and nature, the family donated the fossil to the Westminster’s Parks, Recreation, and Library Department.

“It is the backbone of our site,” Martinez says. The foot fossil is displayed next to the Paleo Dig Site.

Denver area residents are familiar with Dinosaur Ridge in Golden, where they can see dinosaur footprints etched on the side of the mountain.

However, Martinez wants to highlight that a dinosaur backbone does indeed run through Westminster. Large dinosaur footprints can be seen near the West View Recreation Center. Another footprint, likely a hadrosaur or ceratopsian, was unearthed in a sand trap

by Walnut Creek Golf Course. The 1996 discovery of the skeletal remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex in the area were a crowning glory.

Martinez’ goal is to keep talking about these discoveries to kids and families, as dinosaurs have long fascinated both young and old.

“So much rich history exists under our own two feet,” she says.

Pomona makes history with fifth straight team state title JEFFCO STATE GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONS

THORNTON — Pomona gymnastics flipped, twisted and vaulted its way into the history books Nov. 7 at Thornton High School.

The Panthers claimed their fifth straight Class 5A gymnastics team state title scoring 188.550 points. Overland finished second for the fourth straight year with 187.525 points.

Pomona becomes the first gymnastics program in the state to win five team state titles in a row in the largest classification.

“Every year is so different and so special,” Pomona coach Tracey Boychuk said moments after the Panthers were handed their fifth straight 5A team trophy. “The no quit in these girls was amazing. We had so many injuries, pneumonia and so much to fight through this year. These girls we not going to let themselves be disappointed walking out of here tonight.”

Kylie Berens, Mia Tims and Kalise Newson spearheaded the impressive night by the Panthers. Berens claimed her second 5A individual all-around title over the past three years, Tims was the runner-up in the all-around and Newson finished fifth.

Pomona had a narrow one-point lead over Overland heading into the final rotation. The Panthers were solid on the floor with Berens and Tims both finishing in the top-7 to hold off the Trailblazers.

“We all know how to pull together when it’s needed,” Berens said.

It was a bounce back state meet for Berens, a senior at Wheat Ridge High School. She wasn’t able to defend her all-around title she claimed as a sophomore because of injury.

“I had a lot better of a year,” Berens said looking back at her injuryplagued junior season. “I took precautions to not have those same injuries.

Berens was rock solid during the first night of the three-day meet. She had the top scores on the vault and beam, along with placing third on the floor and second on the bars.

“I love doing gymnastics so much,” Berens said. “I just so much fun being out here. Doing it for the team and yourself, it’s unbelievable.”

Boychuk was the last to talk to Berens before she took to the floor for her final event on Thursday night.

“I told her (Berens) to just go out there and have fun,” Boychuk said.

“It’s her last high school meet. It’s not hard for her to have fun at all.”

Berens wasn’t too concerned with winning the all-around title again.

Her main focus was that fifth team title.

“We had a lot of seniors with 10, so we had a lot of leaders,” Berens said.

“I think I did have to step in and help bring the team up. When the year started no one thought this would be possible. I tried really hard to bring hope in everyone. To light a fire to let them know we could do it again.”

Boychuk said Berens winning the all-around title was the “icing on the cake”. Pomona gymnasts — Kelsey Boychuk (2014 and 2015), Brooke Weins (2016) and Berens (2017 and 2019) — have won the 5A all-around title five of the last six years. Lakewood’s Amber Boll claimed the allaround in 2018.

ARVADA — Rocky Mountain senior Mike Madden’s goal in the 98th minute allowed the Lobos to escape the freezing drizzle … and more importantly punch the Lobos’ ticket to the Class 5A boys soccer state quarterfinals.

“I’m just happy to get out of here. It’s cold,” Madden said after knocking home a rebound off a direct free kick taken by Rocky Mountain junior Riley Keeler just outside the goal box early in the second-overtime period. “We are going back to FoCo (Fort Collins). It feels good.”

The goal gave the No. 13 seed

“I was on the left side of the wall because I knew there would be some sort of a deflection,” Madden said of the game-winning goal. “The ball just happened to land right there and I put it in.”

Rocky Mountain eventually had its season end in the quarterfinals. The Lobos lost 4-0 to No. 5 Boulder on Saturday, Nov. 9.

A busy post-season weekend of action for Faith Christian

Faith Christian has had a very successful Fall Sports season in 2019 and they looked to add to that success on Nov. 9. Faith Christian had three teams competing in the state playoffs, Boys Soccer against Salida in the 3A State Quarterfinals, Girls Volleyball hosting a 3A Volleyball Regional and Football hosting Elizabeth in the 1st round of the 2A State playoffs.

Faith Soccer squared off with the #1 seeded Salida High School on the road on Saturday. Faith was coming off impressive wins over Eagle Ridge Academy (5-0) and Arrupe Jesuit (3-1). The Eagles were in for a fight but a tough conference schedule had prepared them for it. Faith Christian was able to strike first with four minutes left in the first half off a goal by Senior Micah Allan. The Eagles and Spartans continued to battle through a tense second half with several close calls for both teams. A controversial missed hand ball call led to a Salida score with only four minutes left in the game. Two fifteen-minute sudden death overtimes came and went and still the score remained tied at 1-1.

The game went to penalty shots, and Faith’s first two shots were blocked

by Salida. Salida would go on and win the penalty shot shootout 4-2 and end the Eagles season with a record 13-4-1.

Faith Christian welcomed in #29 seed DSST-College View and #21 seeded Centauri High School, the Eagles would need two wins to advance to the Denver Coliseum. Faith Christian started out hot and quickly knocked out DSST-College View in three straight sets. Centauri would then face off with DSST-College View and Centauri would also win in three straight sets. That would set

up the match up of Faith and Centauri with the winner advancing as region champion. Coach Chris Powers and his team showed great focus and again took the match in three straight sets. The win over Centauri would secure the Eagles 20th win on the season and yet again move them into state competition. The Eagles will look to make a deep run as they did in 2017 when they advanced to the final four. The state tourney bracket, which should contain a first-round

bye for the Eagles, will come out this week.

Faith Football started their playoff journey with face off with Elizabeth High School. A beautiful sunny afternoon provided a clean field for both teams to show off their running attacks. Faith Christian was able to take their opening drive of the game down the field and Isaiah Kroll turned a short run into a long run for a 38 yard touchdown. Erick Granados was able to run for a 2-point conversion and the Eagles were off to 8-0 lead over the Cardinals. Many times in sports it is the offense that receives the highlights but as they say defense wins championships.

Faith Christian’s defense would be the winners of the day as the continually stifled the Elizabeth offense. A sound interior defensive line lead by Garrett Everitt, Aaron Finch, Landon Hunstad and Quincy Hansen all but silenced the Cardinals ground game.

That forced Elizabeth into passing and the back end of the defense was equal to the challenge including two interceptions from Joel Burck. The Eagles pitched their fourth shut out of the season and advance to the Quarterfinals against Delta High School next Saturday. Westminster congregation installs new Rabbi Boaz Heilman hopes to make ancient sources and resources relevant to 21st century Colorado

For Rabbi Boaz Heilman, Judaism is a 3,000 year old religion, but it’s also relevant to modern concerns - and he’s eager to show how.

Heilman took over leadership of the Westminster’s Congregation B’Nai Torah in August, replacing former Rabbi Anat Moskowitz. He was officially installed as the congregation’s rabbi at a ceremony on Nov. 9.

“I’m here to be a guide in tradition as well as in adapting our ancient traditions to modern times and life in Colorado in 2019,” Heilman said.

“I’m here to teach them about our sources and resources and celebrate and help them during times of sorrow.

Those are basic tenets as my calling as rabbi.”

There’s a lot for Colorado’s Jews to think about, he said.

“We have a very ancient tradition, at least three millennia, and some of the laws and commandments go back that far,” he said. “But people need to adapt and change to modern times.”

teaching and rules relevant to today.

“Teaching the Torah is one of my favorite things to do, and that’s what I’ll be doing a lot of,” he said. “I want to bring our resources and sources into our daily lives so they inform our lives as Jews in America. We are both Jews and Americans and we need to learn how live as Jews in America in the 21st century.”

Heilman was born in Israel and

moved to the United States with his family in 1961. Heilman trained in classical music and piano and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1971 and an Artist Diploma in piano performance 1973, both from Southern Methodist University.

After graduating, he returned to Israel to pursue a career in music. He performed around Israel and elsewhere and made several recordings

for the Israel Broadcasting Authority while also serving as a medic in the Israel Defense Force.

He returned to the U.S. in 1977 to continue his musical studies, earning a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1979.

He’s served as leader at two congregations before moving to Westminster.

He served as Rabbi at another Congregation B’nai Torah in Sudbury, Mass. from 1995 to 2015.

“I served there for 20 years, retired and finally decided that retirement wasn’t for me,” he said, He took on a part-time rabbi position in Laconia, N.H.’s Temple B’nai Israel until 2019.

He’s married, with two grown children, Hannah and Jonathan. His son, who lives in the area, asked for his parents to relocate out west.

“By providence, my wife found her calling here and I found mine,” he said. “It all seemed to line up pretty well.”

His wife, Rabbi Sally Finestone, is serving as the rabbi at Fort Collins Temple Har Shalom. They currently live in Fort Collins.

In addition to his music, Heilman also said he enjoys photography and hiking. He’s already explored some trails in the area and I looking forward to exploring more.

A-West was also the lone 5A Jeffco team to advance past the first round of the playoff the last two years.

“For me I’m just really thankful to have had the opportunity to do this,” said Johnston, who took back-to-back 5A Jeffco League MVP honors his junior and senior champaign. “I know I can look back at my teammates knowing that they will live out the legacy myself and my fellow seniors have built.”

“It was kind of what we expected,” Gette said. “We just couldn’t get the lead.”

Rocky Mountain (11-6-1 record) took the lead again in the 64th minute on the second goal of the night by Gonzales on a great assist by senior Hadrood Webster.

Again, A-West knotted things up at 3-3 with eight minutes to play in regulation time. Senior Judah Johnston hammered home the Wildcats’ second penalty kick goal to send the game into overtime.

“It’s tough,” Johnston said after his final game played at NAAC. “I think they (Rocky Mountain) came out with a fire that I didn’t feel like we had.

They kept on pressuring us and pressuring us. We couldn’t get a break and that is what I thought was the deciding factor in the game.”

Learning Before Conversing And then comes the kicker. Your fifth grader is using marijuana THC and it is not like the any marijuana before. Families can go to government sites like drugabuse.gov, learnaboutsam.org, and ccu.edu for trusted information to be knowledgeable before these new conversations.

Here is a sample of information: A child’s brain, including middle school, high school and beyond is still developing and highly susceptible to the chemical changes that occur in the

body when substances, like THC are introduced. It can affect decision making, concentration, and memory for days after use, especially in people who use marijuana regularly.

Some impacts include: Reduced school performance. Students who use marijuana tend to get lower grades and are more likely to drop out of school than nonusing peers.

Usage affects attention, memory, and learning lasting for days or weeks. Children who start young are 4-7 times more likely to develop dependency. They are significantly less likely than nonusing peers to finish high school or a degree.

Research suggests that people who use marijuana regularly for a long time are less satisfied with their lives and have more problems with friends and family compared to people who do not use marijuana.

Marijuana impairs driving. It affects skills required for safe driving — alertness, concentration, coordination, and reaction time, judging distance, and reaction to signs. It’s not safe to drive high or to ride with someone using. High school seniors who use marijuana are twice as likely to receive a traffic ticket and 65% more likely to get into an accident.

Marijuana potency, measured by the percentage of THC found in confiscated samples, has risen from an average of 3.8% in the 90’s to more than 50% to 80% and greater THC content today. For every tax dollar taken in, taxpayers spend $4.50 on consequences.
