Each student received 14 meals (seven breakfasts, seven lunches). The first route covered the Arvada area, making six stops and serving 68 students. A second route delivered in the Bear Creek area, making three stops and serving 32 students, and the third route covered the Eiber Elementary area, making five stops, serving 65 students. The program will expand to a total of seven bus delivery routes on Jan. 7, 2021.

Wallace said partnering with the district’s transportation department and Title I group, allowed her department to pin point the best areas for the routes.

As of now, the District will continue bus meal service on scheduled days of service while in the remote learning model, which is schedule to end on January 19, 2021 for elementary students. The last day of bus distributed food (at this point) is January 14, 2021.

The move by Jeffco is the latest in a string of changes made to try to align the Grab and Go program more closely with the needs of district families. Other recent changes to the program include increasing the number of

Members of the Dr. Susan Anderson Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution held a socially distanced Wreaths Across America remembrance ceremony earlier this month in honor of U.S. veterans and the fallen at Arvada Cemetery.

The chapter, which was formed in 2008, laid wreaths in honor of six military branches — the United States Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Merchant Marine — as well as a wreath for military personnel who are prisoners of war or are missing in action.

Although new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Jeffco were continuing to decrease heading into Christmas, the county’s numbers were not yet where they need to be to move out of Level Red, the second most restrictive level on the state COVID-19 dial.

According to the most recent guidance issued by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, a county qualifies to be moved into Level Orange when it is seeing 175-350 new cases per 100,000 people, its test positivity rate is at 15% or less and its hospitalization rate is either stable or declining over a twoweek period.

A county’s hospitalization rate is defined as stable if it has seen no greater than a 25% increase in the county’s referral hospitals or no more than two new hospital admissions with COVID-19 in the most recent two-week period.

Christine Billings, the COVID-19 Incident Commander with JCPH, said during a telephone town hall on Dec. 17 that some, but not all, of the county’s numbers were currently consistent with the indicators for Level Orange.

However, the county cannot begin the process of consulting with CPDHE about a move to Level Orange until all of the metrics have been met for

at least two weeks, she said.

“We’re watching our numbers closely, as well as the trends and potential spikes around the holidays, and we’ll continue to update our community as the situation progresses,” said Billings.

Still too many new cases for move

As of Dec. 17, the county test positivity rate was 9.7%, which would qualify Jeffco for Level Orange.

However, the county had seen 585.7 new cases per 100,000 residents over the prior two weeks, which is still well above the 350 or fewer cases per two-week number needed to qualify for the improved color

ranking.

Still, the trend is an encouraging one as that twoweek number was down significantly from the 822.8 cases per 100,000 people the county had seen over the two weeks ending on Dec. 16 and nearly half the 1061.2 cases per 100,000 people the county saw for the two weeks ending on Nov. 25, when new cases peaked in Jeffco.

Hospitalizations were also decreasing, with Jeffco hospitals reporting that about 72% of their staff ICU beds were full, as of Dec. 17. That was down from a week earlier, when Jeffco hospitals reported their ICUS were at SEE COVID, P3

90% capacity, but slightly higher than the 70% number across the entire metro area reporting on Dec. 10.

A move to Level Orange would allow restaurants to reopen indoor dining at 25% while gyms and officers would also be able to increase their capacity.

Officials excited about vaccine

During the town hall, JCPH medical director Mark B. Johnson said JCPH officials are “so excited about the arrival of the Pfizer and Mod-

erna COVID-19 vaccines in Jefferson County and very hopeful about what it means both for our response and the recovery from this pandemic.”

However, Johnson said it will likely take several months for the vaccines to be made available to the general public and that it is important that the public continue with social distancing, mask wearing and frequent handwashing until that happens, even once the vaccine is obtained.

“It’s important to continue with these steps because there are some things we do not yet know about the vaccination and one of those is that even though it may protect you if you do get the virus you may still be able to

spread it to others,” Johnson said. “That’s something that’s still being studied.”

Johnson said the public should also know that the FDA has gone through a rigorous approval process to study both vaccines, including trials on both animals and people, and no serious safety concerns have been reported.

“You’ve probably heard that there are some side effects such as mild fever, chills, body aches, pain and redness of the injection site, perhaps some nausea and fatigue,” said Johnson. “Most of those last only one or two days and that is actually a good sign — it shows your body is reacting to the vaccine and actually creating antibodies.”

On Dec. 18, the state debuted a new Five Star program that counties can implement to allow restaurants and other businesses that implement stricter safety measures than currently required by public health guidelines to accelerate their reopening.

A similar program has already been operating in Mesa County.

However, county manager Don Davis said the most recent report card the county received from CDPHE showed the county is not currently qualified to implement the program based on the criteria laid out by

the state.

“We’ve also received the requirements and guidance for how we can implement it once we are qualified,” said Davis.

“In the meantime, we are going to be working with our Jeffco business partners and municipalities to examine this program and its feasibility.”

According to the CDPHE website, a county in Level Red is eligible to implement the program “only if a county has had a two-week sustained decline in incidence, hospitalizations, and a percent positivity under 10% or improving over the last 2 weeks.”

National Association of Realtors Promotes “Pathways to Professionalism”

As you are probably aware, members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) are sworn to abide by the Realtor Code of Ethics. It’s what separates them from the men and women who are licensed to practice real estate but choose not to pay roughly $500 in annual dues to be a member of the local, state and national Realtor association.

Golden Real Estate requires all its broker associates to join the local Realtor association, which automatically enrolls them in the Colorado Association of Realtors and NAR. Most of us are members of the Denver Metro Association of Realtors, although agents have the choice of which local Realtor association to join.

In additional to the Code of Ethics, is the voluntary and lesser known “Pathways to Professionalism.” It is a collection of recommended courtesies which all Realtors should embrace, as we certainly do at Golden Real Estate. Here are those courtesies, broken down into three categories. It should be noted that failure to practice these courtesies cannot form

the basis of a complaint by fellow Realtors or members of the public. Here they are, highlighting ones I particularly like: Respect for the Public 1) Follow the "Golden Rule”: Do unto other as you would have them do unto you.

2) Respond promptly to inquiries and requests for information.

3) Schedule appointments and showings as far in advance as possible.

4) Call if you are delayed or must cancel an appointment or showing.

5) If a prospective buyer decides not to view an occupied home, promptly explain the situation to the listing broker or the occupant.

6) Communicate with all parties in a timely fashion.

7) When entering a property ensure that unexpected situations, such as pets, are handled appropriately.

8) Leave your business card if not prohibited by local rules.

Fewer Sellers Are Attempting For Sale by Owner There will always be people who are comfortable with selling their home without the assistance of a real estate professional. In 2019, 8% of sellers chose the For Sale By Owner (FSBO) approach, down from 2018’s record low of 7%.

Here are some of the things with which you need to be comfortable if you choose the FSBO approach for selling your home.

Commissions: Yes, you will save on commissions, but not as much as you probably think. The average listing commission is lower than the 6% you may have been told, and that listing commission includes the “co-op” commission paid to the buyer’s agent. In our market, that co-op commission is typically 2.8%.

Since most buyers choose to have an agent who will expect that 2.8%, you can expect that you won’t be able to save more than 3% on commission expense.

You need to calculate whether selling without professional representation of your own is worth that reduced savings.

Net proceeds: It’s possible that you won’t get as high a price for your home without the marketing advantage of being listed on the MLS, which could attract multiple offers and even a bidding war.

Having made that bottom-line calculation, here are some other matters to be considered by the unrepresented seller.

Showings: How will you handle showings, including screening those who will be walking through your home? This is handled by ShowingTime, the service utilized by virtually all agents in the Denver market. They make sure that only licensed agents are approved for showings. All licensed agents have been fingerprinted and passed a background check. In two decades of listing homes, I’ve never had an incident of theft or other crime associated with an agent showing of my listings.

Your time: Another consideration is the convenience of showings. Yes, you could purchase a lockbox and allow agent showings you trust to show your home, but you’ll need to be home to accommodate buyers who don’t have an agent.

21) Do not tell people what you think— tell them what you know.

Respect for Property 1) Be responsible for everyone you allow to enter listed property.

2) Never allow buyers to enter listed property unaccompanied.

3) When showing property, keep all members of the group together.

4) Never allow unaccompanied access to property without permission.

5) Enter property only with permission even if you have a lockbox key or combination.

6) When the occupant is absent, leave the property as you found it (lights, heating, cooling, drapes, etc.) If you think something is amiss (e.g. van-

dalism), contact the listing broker immediately.

7) Be considerate of the seller's property. Do not allow anyone to eat, drink, smoke, dispose of trash, use bathing or sleeping facilities, or bring pets. Leave the house as you found it unless instructed otherwise.

8) Use sidewalks; if weather is bad, take off shoes and boots inside property.

9) Respect sellers’ instructions about photographing or videographing their properties’ interiors or exteriors.

Respect for Peers 1) Identify your REALTOR® and professional status in all contacts with other REALTORS®.

2) Respond to other agents' calls, faxes, and e-mails promptly and courteously.

3) Be aware that large electronic files with attachments or lengthy faxes may be a burden on recipients.

4) Notify the listing broker if there appears to be inaccurate information on the listing.

5) Share important information about a property, including the presence of pets, security systems, and whether sellers will be present during the showing.

6) Show courtesy, trust, and respect to other real estate professionals.

7) Avoid the inappropriate use of endearments or other denigrating language.

8) Do not prospect at other REALTORS®' open houses or similar events.

9) Return keys promptly.

10) Carefully replace keys in the lockbox after showings.

11) To be successful in the business, mutual respect is essential.

Parkway hits more speed bumps

evolve in other ways too. The presidential campaign and competing street protests literally split right down the middle of Wadsworth.

From environmental arguments around controversial changes to trash hauling, to street protests demanding racial justice around issues of law enforcement, challenges were everywhere.

But here we are, on the other side of many of those challenges, even as more appear. Here is a look back at some of the stories that stuck out in 2020.

Lake Arbor assist

A project that has taken over the entire sixth grade class at Moore Middle School — and will soon find its way into Arvada City Hall — started with one 11-year-old, Zach Ford, while he was on a walk with his dad John this summer.

The two were passing by Lake Arbor when Zach asked his dad why they couldn’t see any fish in the lake. John suggested that Zach pose the question to his sixth-grade science teacher, Alicia Asmus at Moore Middle School.

What followed was a real-life lesson in civics and science for area students. After several water tests, the students identified that algae blooms were turning the lake toxic, killing fish and turning it into a public health hazard for Arvada residents. The students proposed an ecological fix, which they can hopefully implement, to improve

For backers of the Jefferson Parkway — a proposed 10-mile long toll road thought the northwest portion of Arvada, connecting state highways 93 and 128 — the year did not start well.

On Dec. 23, 2019, word came down that one of the three construction/ management firms that had been vying for the Jefferson Parkway project was bowing out. The reason? “The project’s anticipated revenue potential does not adequately support the project’s costs by a sizable gap.”

Then city council of Broomfield — one of three entities who formed the original Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) more than a decade ago — unanimously voted to withdraw from JPPHA on Feb. 25.

The news got a little better as the year went on. Two other construction and management firms are still in the running. Arvada and Jefferson County have maintained their commitments to the JPPHA, and health officials officially declared that radiation dangers along the Rocky Flats-adjacent portions of the planned roadway are low enough to not scrap the project.

Still, the road ahead remains bumpy.

and financial support of the Jefferson Parkway would keep most city council’s on their toes, but this was also the year that the council passed a vote to establish single-hauler trash service in the city, 4-3. The move, long-debated, was supported by a city commission tasked with looking into the option, and by a majority of the city council. However, not everyone was pleased with the city’s move, taking the choice out of the hands of citizens, and charging those who did not want to use the city-sanctioned company.

A recall effort was immediately launched, targeting Bob Fifer, Nancy Ford, Lauren Simpson and Mayor Pro Tem Dot Miller. The effort floundered, due to a lack of supporting signatures, but as the city’s new trash hauling contract takes effect, July 2021, it remains to be seen how well this new arrangement will work, and if the supporting councilmembers will face repercussions in the next regular election.

From fires to tornadoes, Golden man embraces pursuit of extreme weather ‘It’s the thrill of the chase’ STAFF REPORT

Many people prefer to avoid severe weather when they can.

Then there’s Cody Cooper.

“I love going after the highest wind that I can get recorded,” said Cooper. “I love snow and snow squalls and stuff like that and, of course, summertime thunderstorms which are another one of my favorite things to go chase.”

Cooper, who is a lifelong Golden resident, said his interest in extreme weather was sparked early when his grandfather showed him the blockbuster movie “Twister” when he was five years old.

It wasn’t long after that Cooper began heading up to the tallest hill in his Golden neighborhood, which he dubbed Stormchaser Hill, to watch the clouds roll through.

“I ended up making my own anemometers as a kid out of coffee cans and Dixie cups,” he said. When Cooper turned 16, he began driving farther afield in search of interesting weather.

He’s been chasing weather and storms in Colorado and western Kansas and Nebraska ever since, and now does so inside a minivan that has been outfitted with a weather station that includes tools to measure humidity, temperature and UV level as an anemometer, which measures the speed and direction of

the wind.

“It’s the thrill of the chase,” said Cooper of his enduring attraction to storm chasing. “There’s just nothing cooler than seeing a wall cloud out east or when you’re standing in a 90-mile-an-hour wind gust and you’re getting blown over but you’re trying to stand up. It’s the adrenaline that kicks in.”

Tornados and gusts

Although Cooper has been in all kinds of weather, he says few experiences have matched driving straight into a tornado near Colby, Kansas two years ago.

Cooper said he and a companion were chasing a severe thunderstorm as it moved east when they broke out of the clouds to find “two little gust up tornadoes spinning on either side of us, about a football field away.”

“We outran (the storm) and got in front of it and ended up getting some just incredible pictures of when the sky turns a dark green and you can just feel the energy in the air from the storm,” said Cooper.

take a weather shot. That’s when an 82-mile-per-hour wind gust came through and nearly knocked him over.

“That was one of the coolest things because you can’t predict when a wind gust is coming through,” he said. “You can just hope it comes through while you are doing a live video and it did. So that was pretty cool.”

For Cooper, the adrenaline of the chase outweighs any anxiety he might ever feel about his chases.

However, his girlfriend, Willow Ball, admits to feeling nervous sometimes.

“I am sometimes,” she said. “But

for the most part I know he’s happy and I don’t want to interfere.”

The video of the gust and several others Cooper has captured are posted at his Golden Colorado weather updates Facebook page, which he started about a year ago to show people what he loves to do.

The page, which features frequent updates about Golden weather in addition to videos and photos from his chases, has 669 followers and was recently featured on CBS4 News.

Recently, Jeffco’s program has been under fire from leaders in the faith, nonprofit, service and education communities.A virtual forum was held Dec. 9, 2020, hosted by the group, Coloradans for the Common Good (formerly Colorado IAF). Pastor Reagan Humber, House for All Sinners and Saints, led the meeting. Taking the District to task for what he considered inadequate access to the program for families in need, Humber called on Interim Superintendent Kristopher Schuh to meet with representatives from the group to discuss changes. In a separate interview, he said the CCG coalition’s main concern was what they perceived to be deficiencies in Jeffco’s program in comparison to similar programs.

“Denver and Cherry Creek are open every day for kids to be able to get hot lunch,” Humber said.

While he agrees the recent expansion of hours and locations is a step in the right direction, his group is still concerned about distances between pickup points creating long walks for kids who have no other transportation options to pick up meals.

Regarding the newly launched bus delivery routes, Humber said his group is thrilled the District has begun this pilot program, and

delighted to know their efforts in highlighting the issue paid off.

He also sees issues with meals the district provides that require reheating, pointing out the need for ready to eat options for families who are homeless or living in cars.

In Denver, there are 35 school sites for daily pickup between 11 am and 1:30 pm, and two schools with pickup only on Wednesdays. In addition, DPS delivers food to 16 sites, mostly at apartment complexes Monday through Friday.

Wallace, however, thinks a direct comparison to the DPS program doesn’t take into account that Denver Public Schools has roughly double the amount of free/reduced lunch eligible students that Jeffco has.

Demand has been tricky to predict, she said, noting that in pickup sites at some Title 1 schools, there has been considerably less participation than expected.

“On the other hand,” she said, “at Columbine, it’s going gangbusters.”

Wallace said the District has been flexible in trying to determine the amount of need and is willing to change and adapt as they see what’s working and what isn’t. She said no system is perfect, but the criticism the District has faced isn’t rooted in data.

“We’ve been serving school lunches for a long time and we’re learning every single day,” she said.

“We’re always open to any pointed, specific need that someone brings to our attention.”

As for the meeting between Schuh and the CCG folks, Humber said the Interim Superintendent has tentatively agreed, but no date has been set.

also begun using the page to document local wildfires, including the East Troublesome fire that became one of the most destructive in Colorado history. Cooper drove up to Estes Park to document the fire and its aftermath last month.

“It’s just indescribable both seeing the flames and the plumes of smoke just shooting up into the air during the fire,” said Cooper. “And after the fire when you’re driving through neighborhoods where people have lost everything it is a pretty humbling experience.”

Reality-based greetings as another year begins QUIET DESPERATION

ir Walter Scott said a new year is “The fittest time for festal cheer.”

I wish I had it in me.

Flipping a calendar page isn’t enough. There’s too much weight and I’m too realistic to believe in the illusion of a fresh start.

My wet blanket is, however, only half full.

T.S. Eliot, more tempered than Scott, said, “Last year’s words belong to last year’s voice, and next year’s words await another voice.”

Trouble is, “last year’s voice” will yet be heard, loud and vulgar and dispiriting, and the impact will linger, perhaps for years to come.

This column was debated. Ultimately, I decided against more hope-filled thoughts.

There will be plenty of those coming at us from other sources.

Like it or not, Americans want “to have their cake and eat it too.”

Just across the page from the letter you published by Tom Sabel on December 17, I read this rule for letters to the editor: Keep it polite: No name-calling or mud-slinging.

How on earth did Tom’s vicious letter get published, I wonder? Here are some of the pejorative, inflammatory words and phrases he used about Trump: pathetic, supine, cowardly, without an ounce of empathy, insane, nonsense, con, fleecing, frivolous.

Please allow your rules to apply both to those who support Trump and to those who oppose him. Going forward, please allow your rules to apply both to those who support Biden and to those who oppose him. Please allow principles to determine the expression of personal opinions.

Thank you for your efforts to keep this newspaper relevant and responsible.

Why the resistance?

To the Trump haters who decry the ongoing investigations into voter fraud, what are you afraid of ?

There has been enough evidence of fraud to generate more than 50 lawsuits across multiple states, though the liberal media isn’t telling you much about it.

I would think that everyone on both sides of the aisle would like to be sure that our elections are conducted freely and fairly.

Perhaps those who want the investigations halted are simply afraid of what might be found.

Growing up, I never understood what that meant. I do now.

We want to have all of our freedoms and liberties, and not be encumbered by common sense and responsibilities.

Like what?

Masks, social distancing, limited occupancy in restaurants and serving hours.

A New York City bar owner ran over a cop after police tried (again) to close his business down.

Men (as it were) in Michigan wanted to kidnap the governor.

Men in Michigan planned to kidnap the governor.

My Michigan-born shoulders slump every time I read something or hear something that comes out of Lansing and Detroit.

It’s going to be a while — never? — before I forgive 74 million for voting for a liar.

And we have yet to reconcile the reasons for the protests all across the country.

Over all of that, smothering everything else, there has been a pandemic, deadly and destructive, poisoning our mental health as well as our physical health.

There have been heartwarming and heartbreaking stories.

And inexplicable behavior.

This is not the space or the publication to attempt to explain human conduct during a crisis.

G.K. Chesterton wrote, “The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes.”

It makes enjoyable reading, doesn’t it?

Like a lot of year-ending, year-beginning philosophical aphorisms.

Let us resolve to leave the worst bits of 2020 behind

O

kay, so, I suppose, if I have a 2020 Christmas List last week, I should have a few New Years’ resolutions this week.

HITTING I know, I know — I’ve said HOME before that I don’t believe in New Years’ Resolutions. But, if there’s anything 2020 has taught us, it may be that we just can’t count on things being the way we think they should Michael Alcorn be. So, maybe a departure from my norm is worth considering.

First of all, I resolve not be afraid. Fear is the little death… I will wear my mask and socially distance when I go out in public — but I will go out in public. I will teach the students who come to school and bring their instruments come Jan. 19. I will get the vaccine when it is made available to me. And then I will take off my mask and smile at the world and breathe the free air.

I think high on my list of resolutions this will be to not want, hope for or spend money on *things*. I haven’t missed things this year — I’ve missed people and experiences. So, 2021 will be a year for going out to dinner a little more, for taking the family to the movies, for having back yard barbecues every weekend and block parties

all summer.

Something that 2020 taught me, and which I think would be wise for everybody to note, was that the first story is not always right.

How many times this year did we see a news story that seemed like earth-shattering, huge news? And then how many times, come day two or day three, did we learn that the story wasn’t exactly what we thought it was? Or was even remotely close to what we were told it was on day one? So, this year, I’m going to wait until day two or three before I really believe what I’m told.

Related to that, I will reserve all outrage about anything I see on social media until I have seen it confirmed and explained by a source that generally disagrees with my world view.

In other words, let 2021 be the year we kick the trolls to the curb.

Another resolution I want to work on is one that one of my bosses has stressed this year: understand what you have control over, what you have influence over, and what is beyond your reach. Because, if you’re spending too much time and energy on that which is beyond your reach (politics, etc…) then you are allowing something else to have control over you. Marshal your energies smarter.

I’d love to break 90 this summer.

That’s, obviously, trivial in the big picture, but… Sure would be an indicator of a summer well spent!

I’ve done it a few times in my life,

but it’s been a while, and I’d like to get back to having good, restful summers.

2020 has put extra strains on many systems and relationships this year. And, while it is true that adversity reveals character, rather than building it, I think it would be wise for all of us to take what happened in 2020 with an extra dose of understanding.

Those people who snapped at you at the grocery store? They may have just found out that their business was being forced to close. That family that couldn’t quite get their act together about online schooling? Well, they may have been fighting to keep a suicidal sibling alive all year.

That friend who you thought you could count on but came up short this year? Maybe they ended up on the front lines of this struggle and had nothing left to give. So, maybe the strains of 2020 were an admission of an already weak system; or maybe those systems and relationships became collateral damage of COVID. Let 2021 be a year of fresh starts and new beginnings. No reason to bring the angst of 2020 forward with us. Happy New Year!

Proposed agreement would have Mines agree to a new review process Deal would set building height limits on school, but still no veto power for city

The city of Golden has released a draft of an intergovernmental agreement between it and Colorado School of Mines that outlines processes and regulations both parties would voluntarily adhere to when it comes to planning future Mines development and expansion into Golden.

The city is now seeking public comment on the contents of that agreement, which would need to be approved by both the Golden city council and Mines to take effect.

During a virtual public meeting held on Dec. 17, Golden City Manager Jason Slowinski introduced the IGA as the product of long simmering discussions about how the city can best assert its interests when it comes to new development in the city by Mines.

The ability of Golden to regulate and control land use matters involving Mines has long been contested, with Mines asserting that it has a legal right as a state college to engage in activities to provide education that trumps Golden’s right to regulate and control land use within the city.

Slowinski said that while the city is confident in its legal position that its right to regulation overrides those of Mines, City Attorney Dave Williamson has concluded that a legal battle would be extraordinarily expensive and a court would most likely order the two parties to work out land use disagreements among themselves, rather than ruling in one party’s favor.

As a result, Golden and Mines have been operating under what Slowinski described as informal understanding in which Mines goes through the motions of the city’s review process when a new project comes up “but at the same time maintains that they are not subject to our regulations.”

“It really has presented strange conflicts between the city and the university,” Slowinski said. “And it’s never been satisfactory, not for the city, not for the university and certainly not for folks who live near

Slowinski said the proposed IGA attempts to address that by providing residents with more certainty and predictability when it comes to addressing concerns related to campus expansion and the issues it can create.

New review and comment process

Among the key tenants of the proposed IGA is a new process it outlines for the city of Golden to review and comment on any proposed construction of new Mines buildings or work on existing ones that would impact their exterior.

That process will begin with a community informational meeting organized by Mines where the community can provide input. Mines is then obligated to hold a second public meeting to explain what project changes have been made and/or rejected. The Golden City Council then has the option of providing a written set of comments, which Mines is then required to respond to after giving them “good faith consideration.”

Golden Community and Economic Development Director Steve Glueck said one potential shortcoming of the agreement is that it does not give the city the power to actually veto projects. That’s because Mines would not agree to giving the city that authority.

“We would most likely need to rely on leverage and political pressure if they are not agreeing to some of the things that are most important to the community,” he said.

Councilmembers Casey Brown and Bill Fisher, however, argued that even without veto power, the agreement does represents a step forward from the city over the status quo.

The proposed agreement also outlines limits for building heights in certain sections of the city. It would limit buildings facing Washington Street to 35 feet or less, buildings facing Jackson Street to 50 feet or less and those east of the alley separating Jackson and Ford streets to 35 feet or less. The agreement would last for five years, with the city hoping to extend it beyond that, but could be severed by either side with 90-days notice.

Public feedback at the meeting was mixed with some hailing the agreement as a step forward while others said it did not address many turning them inside out.”

I am old, tired, anxious and restless. You? Chesterton said, “The old man is always wrong; and the young people are always wrong about what is wrong with him. The practical form it takes is this: that, while the old man might stand by some stupid custom, the young man always attacks it with some theory that turns out to be equally stupid.”

What it comes down to, at least for me, is something Warren Zevon said, “Enjoy every sandwich.”

The digital exhibition of the 2020 Y/OUR Denver Photography Competition is available for viewing through March 1.

‘Hard to put into words’ Volunteers remember veterans at Fort Logan for Wreaths Across America

The hallowed marble rows of headstones at Fort Logan National Cemetery were brightened the week before Christmas, as volunteers with Wreaths Across America honored the dead with bow-festooned balsam pine wreaths.

“It’s a patriotic opportunity to come give thanks,” said Troy Nevergall, one of dozens of volunteers who helped lay more than 11,000 wreaths at the cemetery over the course of three days.

Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit that seeks to show admiration for veterans, began at Arlington National Cemetery, and this year had 2,557 participating locations.

Two of Nevergall’s grandparents lay beneath headstones at Fort Logan.

“Partly this is about coming here to be part of this beautiful place,” he said of the cemetery. “The solace and reverence you experience here are hard to put into words.”

Some have tried. As the volunteers combed the grounds, snow crunching underfoot, the final stanza of Theodore O’Hara’s poem “Bivouac of the Dead” came to mind: “Nor wreck, nor change, nor winter’s blight, Nor Time’s remorseless doom, Shall dim one ray of glory’s light That gilds your deathless tomb.”

Jeffco prep sports 2020 year in review

Though the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the sports schedule in 2020 — in particular — the high school sports calendar, there were still some memorable moments. From Pomona winning another state wrestling championship to Ralston Valley’s golfers placing fourth and a number of teams enjoying success on the hardwood, there were plenty of things to celebrate in the sports world this year as far as Jefferson County high schools are concerned.

COVID-19 turns CHSAA seasons upside down

The Colorado High School Activities Association canceled the conclusion of its 2020 state basketball tournaments and the spring sports season due to state protocols put in place to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most Jefferson County high schools, but not all of them had completed their winter sports season for the 2019-20 campaign. Then they missed out on a spring sports campaign because of the virus.

The 2020-21 fall season was postponed to Season C - or next spring - because of the pandemic.

Jeffco schools, however, played multiple sports, including football, which had the option to stay in Season C or rejoin Season A after CHSAA and the state was able to work out variances to allow teams to play. Jeffco schools played in Season A. CHSAA recently announced the 2020-21 winter sports campaign, which had been delayed to the start of January, will now start no sooner than early February after the state announced that it wouldn’t offer variances to allow for indoor high school athletics during an uptick in COVID-19 cases in late November.

Pomona nabs fourth state wrestling title in five years

Just call it a dynasty.

Pomona won its fourth 5A state wrestling championship in the past five years in February, dominating the competition. The Panthers scored 198.5 points, easily outdistancing runnerup Rocky Mountain, which came in second with 110.5 points.

The Panthers sent four wrestlers to the state finals — Jakob Romero (126 pounds), Daniel Cardenas (138), Gage Bernall (160) and Franklin Cruz (195) — with the latter three securing championships. In all, Pomona had 10 wrestlers place at the Pepsi Center.

Pandemic denies Faith Christian shot at seventh state title

Faith Christian will never know if it would’ve won a seventh 3A state boys basketball title in 2020, but the Eagles were among the favorites for sure.

Paced by a pair of double-figure scorers in Caleb Ruter (15.3 points per game) and Caleb Clark (11.0), Faith Christian went 21-4 and finished second to Lutheran in the 3A Metro League.

Coach Abram Ziemer’s squad was dominant in the state tournament, winning its first three games by an average of 18.7 points per game before CHSAA officials were forced to shut down the tournament in the semifinals because of state protocols involving the COVID-19 pandemic.

No. 3 seeded Faith Christian, which won five straight state titles from 2008-12, was to have played 10th-seeded Sterling in the semifinals for a spot in the finals.

Pomona wins league title, reaches semifinals

The fall football season may have been shorter than usual, but the Pomona Panthers made the most of the opportunity.

Led by senior quarterback Jack Pospisil, Pomona (7-1) opened the season with back-to-back shutouts over Chaparral and Lakewood on its way to beating Columbine 14-11 in the regularseason finale to capture the 5A Jeffco League title.

After the season, head coach Jay Madden - a 1986 Pomona graduate himself - stepped down from the helm he’s held for 18 seasons. Madden coached the Panthers to four state championship contests, including an exhilarating 56-49 win over Eaglecrest in the 2017 title games.

RV golfers place fourth at state

Led by Trey Krischner, who carded a two-day total 5-over 147 to tie for second place, the Ralston Valley Mustangs took fourth place in an extremely tight battle for the 5A state boys golf championship.

Just six strokes separated team champion Valor Christian and fourth-place Ralston Valley at The Club at Rolling Hills in October. Arapahoe was two shots back of the state champions, while Regis Jesuit was five strokes back. Jeffco rival Lakewood came in eighth place.

Dominant season for Tuohy-Gaydos ends in heartbreak

Green Mountain cross country runner Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos was as dominant as anyone could be on the cross country course in 2020.

He won a third straight 4A Jeffco League title this year, winning in a time of 15 minutes, 59.7 seconds. He followed that up with a regional title in almost the exact same time, finishing in 15:59.2.

He was on his way to a 4A state title in Colorado Springs on Oct. 17 when he got tangled up with Niwot’s Zane Bergen mere feet from the finish line. Tuohy-Gaydos was disqualified for impeding a runner, costing him that elusive state title.

While the cross country season didn’t end as he would’ve hoped, the future is still quite bright for the male Heisman High School Scholarship winner. Tuohy-Gaydos will run collegiately for Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

Seeded No. 1 and 2 in the state, they appeared headed on a collision course to all-Jeffco state final before being upset in the semifinals — Wheat Ridge by No. 4 Mead 15-9 and D’Evelyn by No. 3 and eventual state champion Holy Family 12-7.

Still, Wheat Ridge, D’Evelyn and Conifer — Jeffco’s third-place team — proved the conference more than held its own on the softball diamond in 2020.

Green Mountain girls hoops wins Jeffco title

A picture of balance across the team, the Green Mountain Rams girls’ basketball team ascended to the top of the mountain in the 4A Jeffco League in 2020.

Led by junior Courtney Hank and her 10.1 points per game, the Rams ran the table to a 12-0 record against conference opposition en route to a 24-3 overall mark.

The Rams, who had six players average five or more points per game, were the No. 3 seed in the 4A state tournament and the top remaining seed when they were upset by No. 7 Holy Family in the state semifinals in March.

Mustangs win 5A Jeffco boys hoops crown

Two points. That’s what separated Ralston Valley and Valor Christian on Jan. 29. That 60-58 victory on Jan. 29, however, is what helped propel the Mustangs to the 5A Jeffco League boys basketball championship in 2020.

Ralston Valley went 21-4 overall, including 7-1 in 5A Jeffco.

Led by seniors Caleb Rillos (18.5 points per game) and Caden Gigstad (15.1), the Mustangs earned the No. 3 seed in the 5A state tournament. They were headed toward a rematch with Valor Christian in the quarterfinals when No. 19 George Washington, fresh off an upset over Horizon in the second round, upended Ralston Valley 6252 in the Sweet 16.

Demons flex muscles in 4A Jeffco

There was Golden and then there was everybody else in the boys basketball 4A Jeffco League a season ago.

The Demons boys’ team dominated the field en route to the conference title in 2020, winning the league championship by three games over Green Mountain and Wheat Ridge.

Golden (18-7 overall, 11-1 league) was led by the three-headed monster of seniors Kevin Mulligan (11.8 points per game), Ben McLaughlin (11.7) and freshman Alan Acevedo (10.6).

After avoiding an upset from Discovery Canyon in the second round, Golden was bounced in the Sweet 16 by No. 13 Pueblo East 65-62.

Icing on the lake

Veterans, novices take to Evergreen Lake for winter fishing

It’s 12 degrees as the sun rises on Dec. 14, as about a dozen ice-fishers make their way onto Evergreen Lake.

Armed with gear, provisions and equipment, the men and women are ready to brave the cold, hoping to catch a few trout. For some, ice-fishing is a new experience, while others are veterans of the winter activity.

Some bring popup tents to keep out the winter weather, and on weekends, Evergreen Lake looks like a tent city thanks to all of the icefishers.

Friends Ray Trujillo and Michael Romero set up their ice-fishing spot, choosing not to bring too much gear.

Romero calls himself a fishing addict, though he’s new to ice-fishing.

“I’m not going to let the ice stop me,” he said.

Trujillo and Romero like coming to Evergreen to icefish because it’s a beautiful spot and the ice freezes sooner here than down the hill.

Nearby, Dennis Jones of Westminster and his family set up their spot. Dennis was practically born ice-fishing.

A native of Madison, Wisconsin, he joined family members in the sport often in his youth.

While he’s lived in Colorado 40 years, Dec. 14 was only his second time on Evergreen Lake, bringing his wife Carol and son and daughter-in-law Corey and Vanessa along, and all were part of the action.

Carol Jones said the secret to weathering the cold was dressing in layers, and masks helped a lot to keep out the cold. She explained that her husband was a great fishing guide and patient as he taught his family about the sport.

The Joneses had a popup tent with a small space heater, and the women settled in there with their poles.

Vanessa Napier Jones added: “He is very prepared. We brought a lot of stuff with us,” including plenty of hot coffee, soup and sandwiches to get them through the morning. Dennis planned to stay in one spot for about 30 minutes, and if they weren’t having much luck, they would move on to another spot.

Jones barked orders, getting everyone and everything situated, teaching along the way. It wasn’t long before they saw the fruits of their labors: a 12-inch rainbow trout.

“This guy knows his stuff,” Corey Jones said of his dad, while Dennis noted, “It’s a great way to start the day.”
