We have group classes and we teach all levels, from foundational all the way up to Masters. When I met my husband, we both had rescue dogs — and every pet we’ve had since has been a rescue except for Sascha, one of our German Shepherds. About 18 years ago, we saw our very first dog agility competition and thought it would be a lot of fun. We took a class at the facility (we now own), and we got hooked.

Video Is Finding Its Way Into Buyer Inspection Reports to Illustrate Issues

Video has been a great listing tool at Golden Real Estate for a decade, but it is finding its way into other aspects of real estate, too. For example, we will often shoot a roughcut video tour of a listing for an out-of-town buyer who has asked us to preview a property for them.

At a closing last Wednesday, the wife of the out-ofstate buyer told me that she saw the listing for the first time in person during the final walk-through. The husband had seen it in person, but she said our narrated video tour was enough for her to agree with her husband’s decision to buy it.

So, yes, narrated videos like ours are a great listing and selling tool.

But last week, a home inspector came to our office seeking our patronage and said he includes videos in his inspection reports. What a great idea!

I had been so used to getting printed inspection reports (PDFs) that it hadn’t occurred to me that reports could in-

clude video. But an increasingly common delivery method for inspection reports is to have the report “in the cloud” and provide a link to it. That approach opens up the possibility of having video clips and not just still photos. I will recommend that inspector to a future buyer, but you can be sure that I also got on the phone and shared that idea with the inspectors I’ve been referring heretofore, some of them for over a decade.

I’ve received inspection reports that were in the cloud before, but none of them contained links to video clips, which could really help to illustrate some of the defects which inspectors uncover.

I hope this idea takes off and becomes a standard in the inspection industry. Now that every cell phone and every digital camera has video capability, it would require no additional hardware for an inspector to shoot video instead of still photos when a video would do a better job of illustrating the

One of the advantages of videos is that they include sound. It’s a great way, for example, to illustrate an overly noisy fan motor or garage door opener or the sound as well as the motion of water under a plastic vapor barrier.

With narration by the inspector, a video can also provide more context to a problem, such as its location.

Season 3 airs of show that’s ‘putting Arvada on the map’ TV show documents family’s renovation of farmhouse at 74th and Kipling

When Rodman Schley first set out to reduce his carbon footprint, he never expected that his quest to learn more about activities like green building and beekeeping would turn into a public television show.

But the more he learned, the more he wanted to share his newfound knowledge with as many people as possible.

“I didn’t know what I was doing,” he said. “It was mostly me going out and fumbling around. And I thought, `why not teach people the same thing?’”

More than six years later, Rodman and his wife, Gina, are releasing the third season of Urban Conversion.

Centered around living an environmentally-conscious life in an urban location, new episodes will run on Colorado Public Television, a PBS channel, with the season premiere running at 12:30 p.m. on June 29.

The Arvada couple said the new season will tie together lessons learned in seasons one and two as the couple renovates a farmhouse near 74th Avenue and Kipling Street. For the past year

and a half, the Schleys have worked toward platinum certification for the house on the LEED environmental impact scale. Buildings that qualify for platinum certification, which is the highest level on the scale, must earn 80 out of 100 points after being judged on five categories, including sustainability and water efficiency.

The house is “about 98% finished,” Rodman said, and the family looks forward to sharing every step of the process in the upcoming season — which was full of new excursions, to sand dunes and hot air balloons, and unexpected challenges, such as waking up before the sunrise and tracking down a lost drone.

The Schleys said they are unsure whether they will create a season four or what their next project would be for that season. Rodman added that, depending on the reception of season three, the family would be more than happy to continue the show.

“I thought it was going to be a lot simpler along the way, and it was a lot of work,” he said — but, he joked, “We’re still married, which is awesome.”

For both Rodman and Gina, the response the show has drawn from all over the country has been incredibly rewarding.

“People reach out from all over asking, `how do I do it?’” she said. “Those are the types of emails that really make me feel like, `yes, I’m glad we did

this.’”

The show has also given the family an opportunity to travel around the state, with season three the first of the show to be exclusively filmed in Colorado. In seasons one and two, the family also traveled around the country, including to Washington, D.C. and Detroit.

“When I look at everything we’re doing here (in Colorado), I feel like we rock,” she said. “It makes me really proud to live here.”

The couple also filmed a good deal in Arvada specifically, interviewing different city departments and engaging with businesses in Olde Town.

“The entrepreneurial spirit is a great reflection of Arvadans here,” said council member Nancy Ford, who spoke at a preview event held at The Arvada Tavern on June 26. “I just want to thank (them) for putting Arvada on the map.”

The show will run on Colorado Public Television channel every Tuesday at 9 p.m. and will also show on the Create TV channel. Episodes from the first two seasons are available on the online streaming service Amazon Prime.

“This season was very special for us,” Rodman said. “It was my favorite season yet.”

The Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its two Leadership Arvada programs, Leadership Bootcamp and Community Immersion, which will begin in September and run through May 2020.

Started by the chamber to promote involvement and business skills in the community, the programs allow participants to learn about the city, develop new skills and establish connections with important city figures.

“Arvada is such a unique place to be,” said chamber events director Samantha Geerdes. “The people here just want to see the community thrive.”

Leadership Bootcamp and Community Immersion will each accept 25 applicant who will come together once a month for program meetings.

Leadership Bootcamp will meet on the second Wednesday every month and Community Immersion will meet on the third Friday.

The two programs are open to anyone who has not participated before, Geerdes said. She added that a resident who has graduated from

“Both of them have different goals in mind, but both are just so valuable,” said Gillian McCarron, vice president of Lakeside Insurance Center and former participant in both programs.

“You learn that you don’t need to be on city council to be involved in the community; there’s so many ways to do it,” she said.

Leadership Bootcamp Leadership Bootcamp, which ran for the first time in 2018, focuses on community business owners, managers and others “who are growing in their roles,” Geerdes said. Participants will develop catalytic leadership skills, such as public speaking, human resources practices and brand development, she said.

For former participant Kyle van Zyl, developing those skills was important after he worked his way from an interning position at AlphaGraphics to facility and operations manager.

“With the new position came new challenges and more things to learn,” said van Zyl, who now helps plan the programs. “From day one, I was able to go back and apply these things in my job.”

Especially helpful to him was a personality assessment that everybody in the program took, he said.

“It identifies your management style, and you’re able to adjust,” he said. “If you’re a manager, young or old, this is really useful for everyone.”

In addition to the advice given from professional speakers, he learned a number of lessons from fellow participants, he said.

“You realize people from a wide variety of organizations have the same struggles,” he said. “We were able to come together and help each other.”

Once construction personnel have the materials, the projects take roughly three days to complete, depending on the size of the school, he said.

The projects are in response to a number of factors, said bond construction communications specialist Maureen Wolsborn.

For dozens of district schools, the summer will usher in important security improvements, with 37 schools receiving new security cameras and nine scheduled to have front doors outfitted with laminated security glass.

The district has utilized bond money, borrowed after voters approved ballot measure 5B in November, to begin construction in all schools that are not up-to-date on school safety measures.

“Every school is getting these really critical updates,” said project manager Troy Antill.

The district chose to use the new glass, which consists of two pieces of glass connected by an inner layer, after testing how the glass handled different types of force, he said.

“Typically, you’re going to have tempered glass in schools, which breaks into tiny pieces,” he said. “If you try to break through laminated glass, you can’t get through.”

New cameras will also promote school safety. While the current number of cameras varies from school to school, some elementary schools have just one camera on site.

Citizens, district dispute amount of bond money charters receive Some residents say charters will be cheated of more than $2 million

Hundreds of construction projects will be underway at district schools this summer, funded by the $567 million in bond money approved by voters in November.

The district previously outlined how that money would be divided between schools, drawing attention from some community members when the share for charter schools was worked into the budget. While the district says it has stuck to one plan to determine charter share, several community members say the district changed its mind during the drafting process, switching calculation formulas to give more money to non-charter schools.

“To me, they made an error,” said Lakewood resident Bob Greenawalt, whose children previously attended school in the district. “The calculation they used made it appear there are more students in the district than there actually are. It diluted the charter share.”

The district said it is calculating the bond share for charter schools

based on how many students attended each type of school. Based on data from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), district personnel found non-charter schools serve 72,726.8 funded students while charters serve 7,452.

Based on these numbers, the district plans to allocate about 9.29% of the new bond money to charter schools.

However, as three community members protested at a March school board meeting, there’s a dispute about how that allocation was calculated.

Two different enrollment numbers Greenawalt first started examining the numbers when he learned the district would not allocate a round 10% of the bond money to charter schools, as had been stated in board presentations by chief financial officer Kathleen Askelson leading up to the board’s budget hearing this year.

In the past, it has been understood that early budget presentations contain estimated numbers, Askelson said. As such, she did not mention the number was an estimate during the presentation.

“All our schools knew that, but I think some took the 10% literally when they saw it,” she said. “We’ve gotten a little more thoughtful about saying these are estimates, and I’ve

Using the funded pupil count number that the district used, charter schools will be awarded roughly $52.5 million to be dispersed evenly among 17 charter school buildings.

Had the October Full-time Enrollment (FTE) number been used — which does not factor in other elements such as a five-year average or full-day kindergarten — charter schools would instead be awarded nearly $55 million. This would result in an average of $145,000 more for each charter. started to do that as an ongoing thing.”

Protesting community members also questioned why the district used funded pupil count to determine the percentages, instead of full-time enrollment (FTE).

FTE expresses the number of funded students in a district. The measure counts students taking more than 360 class hours in one semester as 1 student and students taking between 90 and 360 hours as .5 students, with all other students ineligible for funding, said Jennifer Okes, the CDE’s chief operating officer.

Meanwhile, funded pupil count considers additional factors, including a five-year average of a district’s FTEs, Okes said.

When districts have a drop in enrollment, they may use funded pupil count instead of FTE for funding purposes, she said. This way, district schools do not experience a drastic drop in funding from year to year.

Funded pupil count is also “a valid number” for a district to use when determining charter share, she said.

“If you’re using funded pupil count for both charter and noncharter schools, that’s reasonable,” she said.

However, Greenawalt said he and others like him had expected the district to use the 2019 FTE number to make its decision. He pointed to a resolution passed by the school board on Oct. 4, 2018 which says, “the Board of Education will allocate a percentage of the bond proceeds equal to the percentage of full-time district students enrolled in districtauthorized charter schools.”

Should the district have used the 2019 FTE, non-charter students would have made up 69,129.6 out of the 76,581.6 being served by the bond money.

Choosing to use funded pupil count Askelson said the district often refers to funded pupil count as FTE or enrollment. “Enrollment is heads in the room that are getting funding,” she said.

Funded pupil count was also used to calculate bond shares in 2004, and there is no statue mandating how the district must calculate charter share, she said.

“Enrollment is a pretty static number we use,” she said. “Charter school principals were very familiar with the formula, and we got no calls from school principals.”

She added that she and her colleagues met with the principals before deciding how to allocate bond money. Ultimately, district leaders chose to use funded pupil count based on principal’s feedback, she said.

But despite state law, not all agree that funded pupil count should be used for its current purposes, Okes said. For those like Greenawalt, the issue might not be with the districts that use these calculations, but with the state, which has allowed these calculations to be used for bond shares, she said.

“There have been concerns from legislators that we’re funding ‘phantom students,’” she said. “Some districts are being funded for students who aren’t there. I think that’s a valid concern.”

To Greenawalt, the answer lies in recalculating charter share and awarding charters the bond money they would have received under the alternative calculation.

“I’m for transparency,” he said.

“Even with this mistake, it’s not a problem for the district to find this money.”

Getting Out Of School Debt Free I had a client call me recently letting me know his daughter had been accepted into Yale this fall. You could hear the pride in his voice. He’s not alone. When it comes to love stories, bibliophilia is one for the books QUIET DESPERATION

have books on shelves in two rooms that I will never read from cover to cover again. I keep them because they are some of my dearest friends.

What’s on someone’s bookshelves tells a lot about them, unless they’ve gone out and bought best sellers just to look good; but I guess that tells something about them too.

This is a tribute to books. Hardcovers and paperbacks only.

I have mentioned my childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It’s where a lot of things happened for the first time, including books.

In the summer when I was between third grade and fourth grade, a little bookmobile came to Burns Park every two weeks, parked in the street, and opened its doors.

I don’t know how many books were in it;

maybe fewer than what I have on my shelves right now.

I was issued my first identification card ever, and then I looked at all of the covers, and tried my best to make the big decision.

I don’t think I owned a single book until I was in the fifth grade. Whenever I was asked what I wanted for my birthday, I said gloves and bats and balls, not books.

The bookmobile had a couple of books about a detective that a brainy kid named Charles Waldrop told me about. Thanks, Charles.

The detective’s name was Sherlock Holmes.

The first book I checked out was “The Hound of the Baskervilles.”

Since then, I have read all of the books

and short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, and I own nine of the 14 Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes films that were made between 1939 and 1946.

Obviously, that was more than one a year.

The quality of the writing and filming, however, is high, and Rathbone’s Holmes has never been surpassed.

My favorite Holmes short story is “The Red-Headed League,” and my favorite Holmes book is my first, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” partly, I’m sure, because it was my first.

I have all of my nonfiction here in my office, and all of my fiction on shelves in the guest room.

Some people have called me unpleasant names and some have supported my perspectives.

We live in widely diverse society where, ostensibly, we are all free to disagree in this way. And so we celebrate the birth of our country, and the freedoms that are supposed to allow us to speak without fear of government reprisal, to worship without fear of governmental oppression, to benefit from a free and open press.

It’s worth noting not only this vision of our founders, but also the courage of those who have fought for their ideals. My parents were among these. Both enlisted in the Army to serve in World War II. Both left their homes to help protect people they didn’t know. Both risked their lives for a cause greater than themselves.

I write at this time each year to honor Eva Levine, born on July 6, 1916. Eva was rounded up and transported from Poland, her homeland, to Bergen-Belsen, for no other reason than that she was Jewish. She lost her health, her husband and the rest of her family in the brutality of the Nazi death camps.

According to United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. – where I received Eva’s information on ID card #2633 – after she was liberated by the British in 1945, Eva emigrated to the U.S. in 1950 and nothing more is known of her.

Yet I will continue to commemorate her, and the millions who suffered with her. I will also continue to stand up for victims who suffer today … because of their faith, their heritage, their gender, because of where they were born, how they were born, or who they love.

In these times of polarized, normalized and codified hatred, at home and abroad, I believe it’s more im-

Their decision doesn’t just impact individual families, it also threatens Colorado’s potential for economic growth.

A “child care desert” exists when there are more than three children for every single licensed child care slot. Nearly 30 percent of Colorado residents live in a child care desert.

That number jumps to 38 percent for Colorado’s Latino population.

The Child Care Workforce and Facilities Act, bipartisan legislation presently before Congress, would provide competitive grants to states like Colorado to support the training and retention of the child care workforce.

It will also help to build and expand child care facilities in areas with child care shortages.

As a kindergarten paraprofessional in Golden, I see each day how children who have received quality child care and early learning instruction do better both socially and academically. I encourage Colorado Senators Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet to co-sponsor this legislation and help expand access to quality child care.

If parents are able to remain in the workforce, and can feel confident their children are receiving adequate and safe child care, Colorado will thrive.

I’ve seen libraries in homes in magazines and movies that I envy, and I’m not even close to those. But when I walk into my small office, and see all of my “friends,” I am in a very special part of the house.

Perhaps my favorites in this room are the biographies and autobiographies. In the guest room, I have a row of Dickens and a row of Doyle, and many of the books I was assigned in college that might have contributed to my disposition. It doesn’t take long to read “The Stranger” by Camus, but it has lasted a lifetime.

I thank Sen. Michael Bennet for cosponsoring S. 1039, the Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act. I urge Sen. Cory Gardner to do the same, and Rep. Ed Perlmutter to cosponsor the parallel bill, HR 2354.

They should work to pass this legislation immediately to bar the president from starting another war that will not make us any safer and which we cannot afford, either in human or financial terms.

Celeste Avalon, Arvada First Amendment should protect Phillips The time has come to end the insanity of vindictively persecuting Jack Phillips because of his religious beliefs. Is there no area of compromise? Jack Phillips will provide his basic wares to anyone. However, his artistic skills are a separate matter. No artist of any type should be compelled to provide their art for any reason whatsoever. If he was a painter, I doubt he could be compelled to provide transgender art. There are other cake shops that would provide the requested items, so why pick on Mr. Phillips because of his religion? This is vindictive. No one should be able to force their beliefs on another.

There are other professions where We have also learned that to be silent is to become complicit … Albert Einstein, Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel and countless others have warned that when we are neutral in situations of injustice, we have, in essence, chosen the side of the oppressor.

If this means, then, that we are not apolitical, so be it. Perhaps, as Mother Teresa said, “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

Religious beliefs can be accommodated as well with carefully constructed laws. No one should ever be refused the basic necessities of life, but providing creative art is another area completely. Colorado’s courts and legislators need to put this on hold and produce a logical solution for all parties.

William F Hineser, Arvada Keep TABOR and the school As homeowner since 1960 we have paid for many bonds in Jefferson County for schools which were really needed since this was a new area being built and there were no schools. However, over the years, we have paid for many schools in our area. We did not have any other avenues to tap for help except what we earned and paid thru our taxes.

But to burden us once again for a school that is standing and in good

shape and was not the cause but the effect of bad people who had issues that ultimately led to others dying.

Rebuilding and destroying the good is not the answer.

Now since Tabor was enacted it is like the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden ripe and ready to eat. It seems that whenever our constituents get together they see Tabor as their own piggy bank. Not giving any credence to homeowners, other property owners who would be strapped with the mill levy increase for tearing down and rebuilding a school that is firmly planted in our area due to the worse case scenario that any school has unfortunately been the target of too many school hazards.

We in Colorado know only too well what sadness and loss occurred. Tearing down the school is not going to make this tragic event go away. It will be a distant memory in many years from now and why blame the school for this tragedy. The school was and is innocent in this disaster.

CBD unregulated, but vendors undaunted Business grows for sellers of cannabis extract

Colorado has been a leader in the CBD industry for a few years, but it wasn’t until the beginning of this year that CBD became more easily transported throughout the United States.

In June 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a prescription CBD solution used for the treatment of seizures.

hen many people think of art, they might picture something that just hangs on a wall or sits in a display case. But as Collin Parson, the Arvada Center’s exhibition manager and curator, sees it - there are all kinds of possibilities in the spaces where art and function meet and diverge.

“Our job at the Arvada Center is to educate patrons, visitors and art lovers about the range of art,” Parson said. “The world is very grey and so is the art world.”

COMING The center’s, ATTRACTIONS 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., summer exhibition Blurring the Line: Form, Function, and Design, is aimed at exploring the creative and playful ways that artists and designers, Clarke Reader well, blur the line between use and aesthetics. The show runs through Aug. 25.

“We could’ve done a show that just focused on well-crafted work, but we wanted to also play with form,” Parson said. “Our show features people who not only have these concepts by the craftmanship to bring them to life.”

Finding the right creators for the show proved to be a bit tricky at first, but Parson said he was able to approach artists and invite them to share their most utilitarian works and designers and craftspeople to display their most creative.

The resulting exhibition - split into creations for spaces in the Main Gallery and creations for bodies in the Upper and Theatre galleries - includes dynamic and unusual takes on everything from lights, desks, jewelry and cutlery to headdresses and a 34-foot couch that spells out the word “lies.”

Participating artists include the Michael Beitz, Donald Fodness, the collaborative duo known as Knomad Colab and the center’s own Bebe Alexander. From 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, there will be a free Thirsty Thursday event at the center, where attendees can meet the artists, join in on activities and enjoy a complimentary drink.

“I hope everyone who comes to see the show will look at function differently than they did before,” Parson said.

he sign in front of his business is subtle, yet Todd Muck said it can scare people off who are wary of the three-letter abbreviation and its association to the newest extension of the cannabis industry: CBD. Muck is the CEO of Cannabis Bioscience Development in Franktown, a small, second-floor office selling products containing various combinations of cannabinoids purported to have medicinal properties. Cannabinoids are one class of chemical compounds in cells that alter neurotransmitter release in the brain.

Cannabidiol, known better by its abbreviated name CBD — not to be confused with the name of Muck’s storefront — is the most present of the 113 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Combined with different concentrations of cannabinoids, the oil can be an ingredient for lotion, tincture, body wash, bath bombs, candy, dog treats and numerous other products — all with the claim it can help stop muscle and joint pain, promote muscle relaxation and relieve anxiety, among other things.

Muck, a Nebraska transplant, has bull-riding friends who swear by the oil’s ability to relax years-old pains.

Muck has arthritis, which he said has improved since applying a CBD salve to his hands daily.

Skeptics often point to the possibility of a placebo effect. Muck will then talk about his 14-year-old border collie, which after a regular dosage of CBD, Muck said, “acts like a puppy again.”

“All he knows,” Muck said, “is it’s a treat that makes him feel better.”

CBD is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the FDA has taken notice of its surge in popularity and its alleged health benefits. Now through July 16, the FDA is requesting comment through a public docket to answer questions people have so far. On May 31 the FDA held a hearing to discuss the product.

Most of Muck’s customers are specifically looking for an alternative to marijuana. Though Muck’s products contain, by law, less than 0.3% THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, the relation and confusion between CBD and THC is enough to keep skittish potential consumers at bay.

Many of Muck’s customers, he said, come to him having been burned before by some products, while others have worked. This dilemma is commonplace for CBD retailers.

Muck can only provide anecdotal evidence on whether his products work. He said he provides test results from each of his products from a

WHAT THE FDA IS DOING On its website, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which does not regulate CBD, recently posted an overview of its approach to the substance. It can be found at https:// bit.ly/2JfrPAT, and the page has a link to an area where consumers or potential consumers can offer comment.

The recent post explains the FDA is looking into the safety of CBD and CBD products.

That includes: • “The effects CBD could cause in the body, such as toxicity to the liver, when someone ingests CBD regularly over a long period of time.”

The webpage also notes that some vendors make misleading or unproven claims about CBD’s effectiveness.

“Unlike drug products approved by the FDA, unapproved CBD drug products have not been subject to FDA review as part of the drug approval process, and there has been no FDA evaluation regarding whether they are safe and effective to treat a particular disease, what the proper dosage is, how they could interact with other drugs or foods, or whether they have dangerous side effects or other safety concerns.”

third party, which he believes adds credibility.

But that’s not the case for every vendor. From consumers’ perspective, there’s no telling what is legitimate.

The FDA says that should it decide to regulate the product, it will likely be easier to differentiate between real and scam products, and the medicinal value of each product.

As an unregulated industry, there is no formal testing required or benchmark to determine one CBD product from another. Some shop owners will have their products tested by a third party, but scientific proof of the product’s contents is not required.

Given that CBD science is limited, those who sell it must be careful not to allude to it having proven health benefits.

“That’s the one thing we’re careful of, is we’re not telling people ‘this is going to work for you,’” said Rick Morgan, president and manager of Total Beverage, a liquor store in Thornton and Westminster that

recently began selling CBD products.

“For the most part, our staff just says: ‘This is what we carry. We don’t know anything about what it can and can’t do. There aren’t studies. If you need more information, the internet is your best spot.’ We’re not pushing people on it. We’re more just trying to answer questions.”

In December, Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill, legalizing the extraction of CBD oil from hemp products federally. King Soopers recently announced it would be carrying CBD products in some of its stores.

According to Statista, a consumer data website, the CBD industry generated $512.7 million in nationwide revenue last year. It is projected to generate $813.2 million in 2019 and $1.8 billion by 2022.

Morgan said he had considered putting the product on his company’s shelves for at least two years before deciding to give CBD its own shelf, in place of where the sake and vermouth used to be.

“We kind of like to be the person pushing the line,” Morgan said. “It kind of seems like right after we got into that I’ve heard of more and more places that are carrying it.”

There are a myriad of ways to get CBD, including a number of add-ons some stores provide in their products. You can choose to have a spritz of CBD with your latte or mixed into a superfood smoothie. On certain shelves you can buy CBD popcorn, chewing gum, vape oil and CBDinfused water.

“Most people seem to like it so far.

They’re already here buying other stuff so it’s one more thing we can offer them,” Morgan said. “It’s still a really small piece of our business, but it’s definitely growing.”

Does it work?

CBD is legal to sell in all but five states in the nation if it contains less than 0.3% THC. There are different spectrums of CBD found in a product that is used for different purposes.

Emory Wilder, a medical doctor and a faculty member with Metropolitan State University of Denver, is scheduled to teach a course on medical cannabis at the school this fall and has taught two similar classes at Red Rocks Community College in the past.

He said CBD can be an effective treatment for a variety of ailments.

Wilder said a high dose of CBD can counteract feelings of being “too high” off THC and is often administered for people who ingest too much THC through overconsumption of marijuana edibles.

“It’s not necessarily that more is better. There’s a balance about it,” Wilder said about CBD. “If you use it at low doses, the body tends to make more receptors for it so it has more of an effect, and you can do that in an ongoing

Muck answers questions from his most skeptical customers with stories of friends whose vision had improved or had pain controlled using CBD. Prepared with test results of his product’s contents, Muck is confident it works.

Morgan is too, though he doesn’t use it himself. His wife does, and it’s enough to make a believer out of him.

Taylor Hecker, executive assistant for Nature’s Best CBD in Littleton, said the product speaks for itself.

“I’m blessed to be in this industry.

It’s an awesome plant,” Hecker said.

“I’ve had customers come to me crying because they’re in so much pain.

Then they call us a week later crying because they feel better.”

Too often, Muck said, people will come back reporting mixed results from trying CBD. A lot of people can get duped into buying coconut oil or vegetable oil instead from other stores, he said.

“There need to be a lot more studies done,” he said. “But the studies so far have shown overwhelmingly positive effects.”

Julie Nen, who visited Nature’s Best June 24, peppered the sales representative with questions. She had back pain and mixed experiences with using CBD in the past. Yet, here she was again, testing out the powers of the oil. Following one lengthy explanation after another, Nen, palms on the edge of the glass, sighed and said, “Maybe I should just smoke some weed.”

are advertised to not cause any side effects either, other than some nausea if overconsumed, by just about every CBD retailer.

The FDA has said it needs to look at the side effects of the chemical, using Epidiolex as a yardstick for which to measure the chemical’s potential for regulation. One of those side effects the FDA is exploring is whether CBD can have a potentially harmful effect on the liver.

What’s next?

Muck tends to use the future tense to describe the CBD industry’s promise. It’s going to be big; It’s going to be popular. That’s all contingent, of course, on a widely hoped-for step for the industry: being regulated by the FDA. Wilder agrees there’s a “growing momentum.”

“The issue that raises in turn is the capitalization of cannabis … putting cannabis into a capitalist marketplace so that the processes of industrialization are applied to it, with both the positive and negative effects,” Wilder said.

For now, CBD store owners rely on consumer feedback. Many stores provide no way of knowing how much CBD — if any — a consumer is buying. Salespeople can’t legally make claims about the medicinal properties of the product, but that doesn’t keep some from telling inspirational stories of friends who replaced all their pain medication with CBD products.

“It’s hard to change basic world views,” Wilder said. “It takes time.”

Community Immersion Community Immersion is open to anybody who lives or works in the community and has an interest in learning more about the city.

The program will give participants the chance to meet city officials and connect with nonprofits in the area.

Additionally, they will learn about the city’s history and culture through several events, such as a mock city council.

“The mock city council event truly felt like an adult field trip. Actually, each program day did in its own way,”

said Realtor Kathryn Tighe, who participated in both programs. “I just loved learning about the inner workings of our community.”

Geerdes said participants particularly appreciate touring different town buildings and getting to know the city.

“It’s not just sitting in a classroom.

It’s really hands-on,” Geerdes said.

“They’ll get to make really great connections they can use later on.”

McCarron agreed, saying she not only has stayed in touch with leaders she met in the programs, but the chamber members who worked to put the programs together, and the other participants.

“We still meet for lunch and connect on a pretty regular basis,” she said.

“It’s a great way to get to know people you wouldn’t meet otherwise.”

Apollopalooza celebrates 50th anniversary of moon landing One small step for man, one giant leap for Wings Over the Rockies

For those who weren’t alive on the night of July 20 a half-century ago, it’s difficult to imagine what it must’ve been like to see men land on the moon for the first time. For the millions watching, it was an event

that will never be forgotten.

Metro resident Stephen Kelly certainly didn’t. And when a little over a year-and-a-half ago he realized the landing’s 50th anniversary was nearing, he thought it was an occasion worth celebrating.

“I went to the management at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum, where I had volunteered for a long time, and mentioned to them this was coming,” Kelly said. “I thought it would be great if the museum could commemorate the event. Originally, I was thinking of a one-day event to celebrate. It’s really expand-

Apollopalooza will be held at the air and space museum, 7711 E. Academy Blvd. in Denver, from July 13 through 20. The event will feature everything from film screenings and Apollo veterans panels to a STEAM festival and career mingle.

“There are a lot of milestones that can be celebrated: Yuri Gagarin’s flight as the first human in space, Alan Shepard as the first American in space and Apollo 8. However, the Apollo 11 moon landing has the feel of a triumph that can be touched,” wrote Jessica Castellano, Wings Over the Rockies’ chief development officer, in an email interview. “We not only went to space, we touched it, walked on it, and came home. Nothing has been the same since that day, for our aerospace heroes and for our global citizens.”

One of the main goals was to offer an event of substance and without fluff, said Kelly, who chaired the committee that organized Apollopalooza.

Fortunately, education is a key part of Wings’ mission statement, and Denver is home to a burgeoning aerospace industry. National titans like Ball Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Sierra Nevada Corp. all call the state home.

these fields – they’re involved in current programs working to get people back on the moon,” Kelly explained.

“We have a number of folks that were actually veterans of the Apollo program in one aspect or another, and these guys have some stories to tell.”

Some of the marquee names include Gene Kranz, NASA flight director for all Project Gemini missions, as well as Apollo 11. He also was the leader of the Apollo 13 “Tiger Team” (actor Ed Harris played him in Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13” film).

Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt, an Apollo 17 astronaut and moonwalker, and Joe Engle, astronaut and X-15 pilot from Colorado Springs, are just a few other people who will be on hand.

But on June 29 on a cloudy day in Golden, a form of women’s professional sport was on display that some may not know about — football.

The Women’s National Football Conference hosted an all-star event, along with the league’s championship game in which the Texas Elite Spartans won the championship at the Colorado School of Mines. The league started up this year, and it hopes to take the sport to a level similar to that of the WNBA. There are currently 15 teams in the league, including the Denver Bandits.

“I’m excited for what the league is doing to advance the game,” said Denver Bandits running back Britney Derhak, a Wheat Ridge resident. Derhak added that all of the players in the league have jobs and some work up to two jobs while keeping up on the field.

It doesn’t matter what sport it is,” said Leeza Hartzog, a player on the North Florida Pumas. “It’s important to showcase the women that play football, as well as any other sport.

12 arrested for youth baseball fight The Lakewood baseball brawl made waves across social and national media

It was an ugly scene that made waves across the country, including on the Today Show, but Lakewood Police have cited 12 people in connection to a brawl at a youth baseball fight. The ages of those who were cited range between 16 and 55-years-old.

On June 15, police were called to Westgate Elementary School at 8550 W. Vassar Drive as a large fight broke out between adults during a youth baseball game. There were around 15 to

20 people on the field when police arrived. The department’s Twitter page tweeted a video of the fight, asking the public for help to identify those who were involved. The video has 2,918 retweets as of June 30.

Police gave out citations for disorderly conduct, and those who were cited will appear in Lakewood Municipal Court. Two of those who were involved in the brawl are from Lakewood.

A slice of good news Josh Cordova, a 13-year-old who was an umpire at the game where the brawl occurred, was invited to Coors Field by Chris Guccione, an MLB umpire, during the Rockies game against the Dodgers on June 30. According to Sports Illustrated, Guccione wanted to show support to Cordova.

There’s a lot of interactive and social events to be excited about, including a Launch Day Breakfast with Kranz on July 16, and a Moon Landing Viewing Party on July 20 that features a live band, dancers, barbecue dinner and themed costumes for the night, capped with a screening of the moon landing timed to the minute it happened 50 years ago.

Apollopalooza is an all-ages event, but students and millennials are being particularly catered to with events that exhibit education and career opportunities in related fields.

The STEAM For All Festival on July 14 is focused on community accessibility to aerospace and will feature workshops, activities and more. Because the event isn’t just about the past – it’s also a look to the future.

“After attending a full day, a lecture or just stopping by to see what all the fuss is about, we hope visitors come away with an amazing appreciation for the thousands of men and women who helped put the first men on the moon 50 years ago,” wrote Ben Theune, Wings’ director of marketing, in an email. “We hope guests leave with an excitement about the future of the space industry as a whole and a desire to follow our progress back to the moon in 2024 — and maybe to even get involved.”
