Colorado Gives Day a ‘give-where-you-live’ event Sixth annual giving day set for Dec. 8

By Crystal Anderson canderson@coloradocommunitymedia.com In the holiday shopping rush, one Colorado organization is hoping Coloradans will pause to think about spending a little on an extra gift this year for Colorado Gives Day. “Colorado Gives Day is a movement,” said Dana Rinderknecht, director of online giving for Community First Foundation, which founded the charitable day. “It’s really fun to see how excited people get and how personal their involvement is — that’s what it’s all about.”

Colorado Gives Day on Dec. 8 is an annual statewide effort to increase charitable giving. In 2014, it raised

$26.2 million. Now in its sixth year, the 24-hour event encourages residents to donate to one or more of the 1,800 nonprofits listed on the site.

Although an annual event, Rinderknecht wants to remind the community this is a great way to be introduced to nonprofits that you can help year-round.

“It’s truly a give-where-you-live event,” she said. “You can put in your ZIP code and find a nonprofit in your backyard you didn’t know about. It’s bringing the nonprofit and the donor together.”

To participate, donors simply go online to www. coloradogives.org and find the nonprofit they’d like to donate to and select the amount they want to give. Along with the online service, the group also has a free app to schedule donations, use the donation calculator, track donations and see the leaders in the corporate challenge.

“The thing that’s really gratifying is every year we add

hundreds of nonprofits to the site and every year we have record-breaking numbers,” said Kayla Arnesen, the foundation’s director of communications. “To me, that shows there’s still growth out there.”

For 10 years, it’s been a community of giving.

This year, the Arvada Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth (AWRSAY), which has hosted the Santa House donation center to provide low-income families with Christmas presents, is kicking off the event at its new location in the Arvada Marketplace, 7450 W. 52nd Ave., Suite V. “We’ve grown in our relationships with the community and that’s the biggest thing I’m grateful for,” Duane Youse, founder of the Santa House, said of its tenure in the city. “There are a lot of stories and lessons learned here, but the chance to serve these families is very meaningful.”

The program will support 17 schools in Arvada and Wheat Ridge this year and give nearly 2,600 children presents to open on Christmas morning.

“The city council is truly honored to partner with the organizers of Santa House,” Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said. “In addition to assisting with the Santa continues on Page 14

A glimpse of the people in our community

LUCY LEE High school student, chamber intern, helper of people About me I’ve lived in Arvada all my life and, to me, it’s a really great place.

I haven’t really been anywhere yet — by choice — because Arvada is a nice location.

Everything is so close. I attended Webber Elementary, Moore Middle School and now I’m in my final year at Pomona High School, and I couldn’t be happier.

In the past four years, I’ve been involved in various programs at Pomona, including student council, the National Honor Society, the Jeffco Executive Internship program and a business leadership course. I love planning and, through student council, I was able to plan homecoming and prom, which was really exciting. I showed off my school spirit and, well, I have pretty great school spirit.

In my spare time Outside my school activities, I work at Bed Bath and Beyond, and it’s fun. I also intern with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce where I’ve learned a wealth of skills.

I originally thought I would intern with a hotel management organization, but was contacted by the chamber and I’m glad I got placed there. During this semester, I’ve been able to help them with various marketing and event-planning projects, and I helped organize volunteers for Taste of Arvada.

Through this position, I learned a lot about time management and prioritizing. It’s been hard to manage all my after-school programs, work, and that — but I figured it out.

I think that’s very true. It’s not so much about getting money, and it’s nice to give back. I feel that’s where I’m at, and if I do make it big someday, I want to give back.

My dreams In the future, I’d like to work within the business world, perhaps marketing and management. I would love to start my own business, though I’m not sure what yet.

Once that’s started and I’m making a solid income, then I want to use it to give back to students locally through a scholarship fund.

That’s a dream of mine: I want to help make their dreams come true.

Westminster represented in chamber roundtable event

By Crystal Anderson canderson@coloradocommunitymedia.com Mayors from four neighboring cities talked of looking beyond city boundaries to collaboratively solve regional issues during the Arvada Chamber of Commerce’s annual Mayoral Roundtable.

“One of the great things about the Denver metro area is we all think regionally, and we believe in that,” Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said at the beginning of the Nov. 20 event.

The roundable discussion was part of the Arvada Chamber of Commerce’s third Friday Breakfast series. Williams was joined by Wheat Ridge Mayor Joyce Jay, Westminster Mayor Herb Atchison and Golden Mayor Pro Tem Joe Behm. For a little more than an hour, the mayors discussed the major issues facing their communities. They included construction defects legislation, water issues, local environmental concerns, transitoriented development, housing density,

transportation, tax-increment financing, growth and urban renewal.

Community members Berto Aranda and James McLaughlin found the discussion informative not only about their communities, but also about surrounding areas.

“It’s very interesting how all four areas are growing immensely,” said Aranda, a new Arvada resident interested in the state of the city and its development.

“It’s cool to see what is going on in the community,” McLaughlin said. “There wasn’t one discussion that got away from transportation and it will be interesting to see how all that plays out.”

No matter the topic, the mayors kept returning to the central theme of collaboration as something they said not only builds stronger communities, but also helps the area grow.

“It pays to work beyond your borders,” Atchison said, referring to the U.S. Route 36 Expressway Project. “The Denver-metro area has the biggest opportunity to continue to shine, through the Metro Mayors Caucus and the DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Governments) groups. We are there.”

Some Pros & Cons of Buying or Selling a Home During the Holiday Season Frequently I’m asked if this time of year is a good or bad time to put a home on the market or to shop for a new home. Having worked through 13 holiday seasons REAL ESTATE during my real estate TODAY career, I have some pros and cons that I can share with you.

The cons are fairly obvious. The weather alone would be an issue for many, not only in terms of comfort, but because buyers might track mud and snow into sellers’ homes. And

These are some of the reasons that inventory of homes for sale dips in the depth of winter, as shown in the left chart on this page. The dips in those charts are January and the peaks are July. But look at the second chart, with the same pattern of peaks in July and valleys in January. The fact the former chart is falling year-over-year and the latter chart is rising yearover-year tells the story of our “seller’s market.”

There are fewer homes to choose from, but they are selling in greater and greater numbers.

Often I’m asked how I come up with new topics to write about each week. Usually I don’t decide until the week of publication, but it’s typically related to an experience I had during the previous week working with buyers and sellers.

What I want you to notice is that while there are currently fewer than 10,000 active listings — falling to about 6,000 by January — there will be at least 4,000 sales. If you put your home on the market this winter and don’t overprice it, the chances are two out of three that it will sell.

Compare that with the first dip in the charts, January 2011. There were about 32,000 active listings, but only 2,000 sales. Back then, you had only a one in sixteen chance of your home being sold in January.

If you’re willing to list a home at this time of year, your home will have less competition for buyers’ attention. Fewer competing listings is better for sellers. You can also comfort yourself in the fact that only serious buyers will displace you for a showing — no “looky-loos.”

On the other hand, if your home has been on the market and hasn’t sold, the holidays can be a good excuse for taking a breather. After 31 days, the “days on market” clock resets to zero.

Put it on the market as a “new” listing in 2016.

What about buyers? They, too, will have less competition at this time of year, when families with children want to concentrate on the holidays. The reduced competition may compensate for the reduced selection you will have. What I suggest is to get an agent like me or one of my broker associates at Golden Real Estate to send you listings that match your search criteria, even if you’re not keen on looking at homes now. The house you’ve been waiting for might go on the market and you won’t want to miss it just because it’s Christmas-time. A good agent will make the time to show you homes or has a colleague who can show you. (Agents not in a multiple-agent brokerage don’t have that flexibility.)

The mad turkey day rush Last-minute dash to the grocer as 48-hour countdown to Thanksgiving begins

Cars slowly drive up and down the full lot, searching for the coveted nearby space, but end up parking in the back. Moms and dads walk with their children into the seemingly busiest place in town.

The grocery store.

It’s 4:15 p.m. two days before Thanksgiving and Arvada residents are out in droves to pick up the final ingredients needed for their holiday feasts. With few carts available, the King Soopers Marketplace at 8031 Wadsworth Blvd. is packed. Individuals with written or typed lists in hand zoom through the produce section, picking up vegetables and other ingredients.

“Let’s get two,” a young man says to his wife.

“Wait — are they organic?” A mother asks her teen daughter who throws vegetables into the cart.

“Put these back.”

“We also need Fritos, too!” another teenager tells her dad as they wheel from the produce to the chip aisle with a loaded cart.

People hurry throughout the store.

“Would cranberries be down that aisle?”

“What kind of gravy do we need?”

“Stuffing? Probably StoveTop.” Turkeys, roasting pans, yams, stuffing, almonds, bread crumbs and more fill carts to the brim.

As the mad rush ensues, a few customers pop in for that evening’s dessert or dinner for two. But, on this afternoon, Thanksgiving procrastinators rule — just as surely as their Thanksgiving Day dinners will, too.

Young Entrepreneurs Marketplace Dec. 12 The public is invited to support young business owners at the Young Entrepreneurs Marketplace, which happens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Young Americans Center for Financial Education, 401 S. Pierce St., in Lakewood.

The Graduate Commencement Ceremony, MS and Ph.D. students, will take place at 4 p.m. at the Lockridge Arena.

The Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony, BS students, will take place at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 18 at the Lockridge Arena.

I love the holidays. Starting with the weeks leading up to Halloween, right on through New Year’s Day, the entire season just brings me joy: the lights, the food, the meaning, the food, the parties, the food . . .

The one thing I know some people dread about the holidays is family. I don’t know — that’s never been a problem for me. I love getting together with my family. There are seven of us kids, and most of us are married with kids of our own, so a family gathering for us is a little like a town meeting.

And, in case you’re wondering, the whole family shares my penchant for voicing opinions. Things tend to get a bit lively. One year, I caught my dad giving my mom one of those “Oh, my God, what have we done?” looks.

You can imagine that, as much as I enjoy these, there was a time that meeting the Alcorns ended up being a bit of a crucible for boyfriends and girlfriends. And the actual bringing them over became a bit of a gutcheck. Not in the sense of “what if the family doesn’t like them?” but more of a “what if they run screaming from the asylum that I grew up in?”

My family is awesome, and I wouldn’t want to have grown up in any different environment. But, I can understand how that would seem abnormal to some. The look on my wife’s face when I brought her over

was priceless — she obviously survived the ordeal. Luckily, the experience of the Irish wake came along after we were already married. Even so, all of us have managed to bring people over that survive into marriage.

But among the other families that have Michael Alcorn joined with ours are HITTING single-mom families with two children, HOME families with adopted children, families with multiple divorces and stepparents and siblings. Lots of combinations and permutations.

What I have learned through these different minglings of people and traditions is that there is no such thing as a normal family. Everything becomes normal to the people in the family after a time, as long as there is love. So, as strange as my family seemed to my wife the first few years of our marriage, she has come to appreciate the Alcorn way of doing things, and it seems, if not normal, still good.

I don’t know what kind of family you exist in. There are very few families like the old television families of “Father Knows Best” or

“My Three Sons.” Most families these days are weird amalgams of “What’s Happenin’?”, “One Day at a Time,” and “The Simpsons.”

And it’s understandable that family causes some stress in this season. But try, just as an experiment, to look at family for all the quirky little ways they hold you together and how you hold them together, too. We all have our place, whether we like it or not, and that is part of who we are.

By the way, do you have any idea how hard it was NOT to mention the Huxtables in that last paragraph? Sadly, it would seem, we have an awful lot of families that have a story much like theirs, too, if you know what I mean.

So, I guess, if you’re feeling a little tense over family gatherings this season, I’d like to invite you to come and spend the afternoon with my family. You will develop an appreciation of your own clan and understand that strange and raucous is also, quite possibly, beautiful and wonderful.

But, if you do, don’t reach for the cranberries right after Grace. My brother John can be a little . . . forceful . . . about defending his favorite dish.

Don’t let fear devour your common sense If you are reading this and you have a beard, stop right now and go get yourself registered. Terrorists have beards, and, clearly, if you have a beard, you are a terrorist. Similarly, terrorists have brown eyes, so if you have brown eyes, go get registered as well. If you have brown eyes and a beard, skip the registration and head straight for the internment camp.

If you are a woman wearing a vest — any vest — you must also be a terrorist, so immediately join your brown-eyed bearded counterparts in the camps. Oh, and take your children with you.

Does this sound extreme? I intend it to.

These radical policies are one slippery slope away from Donald Trump’s assertion that Muslims in the U.S. — most of whom are American citizens, by the way — should be registered in a national database where the nebulous “we” can track their very existences.

That this dangerous proposition comes from Trump does not shock me — little from him shocks me anymore. That such a notion, though, has entered the collective consciousness of our country horrifies me.

Some people I’ve talked to are tempted to shrug off this outrageous scheme as just more of Trump’s bombastic threats. From what I’ve seen in the media, though —

which gives Trump a disproportionate platform for doubling down — there are people who believe him and support him, even in this extremist proposal. Now, that does shock me.

Trump is not the only one assuming this fear-mongering Andrea Doray mantle in the guise of national security.

ALCHEMY Both Republicans and Democrats have passed a bill in the House of Representatives requiring a vetting of Syrian refugees that is additional to international and national screenings already in place, which virtually assures that none of them could ever come here. As of this writing, the outcome in the Senate is still in doubt. On the other hand, potential terrorists can enter the U.S. far more easily and quickly on simple tourist or student visas.

Before you call me callous, casually disregarding the security of our homeland and the people here, consider this: Most of the attackers in the recent Paris massacres were Europeans. The mastermind was a citizen

of Belgium. By an extension of flawed logic, will we refuse Europeans coming to the U.S. in a misdirected concern for Americans’ safety?

We must learn from the mistakes of our own history. During World War II, more than 7,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned at the Granada Relocation Center here in Colorado. Before this, the U.S. government turned away ships carrying European Jews fleeing for their lives. In a 1939 poll, more than 50 percent of Americans said we should not accept German Jewish orphans.

The world did not know then — or did not believe — what was happening until it was too late. We don’t have that excuse today.

And as much as I ache for the Syrian refugees, I am also fearful for those of Muslim faith who are already U.S. citizens.

When Trump and his ilk — including others in the presidential race — espouse such radical policies in the name of the United States, they are not speaking for me. Will we become no better than the extremists we battle?

Talking about racism: Let’s get uncomfortable

The pain of racism is real and immediate: A young black woman looks toward the sky, tears leaving trails on her cheeks. As she chants, “We have nothing to lose but our chains,” she collapses into the arms of her friends.

Jonathan Butler, a black 25-year-old graduate student, refuses to eat until the University of Missouri system’s president, Tim Wolfe, steps down.

Concerned Student 1950, a group of black rights activists on campus, present to university administration eight Anna demands they believe will Sutterer catalyze action against systematic discrimination at the school.

I watched these scenes at my school gain national attention over the past three weeks. I saw lasting effects of Missouri’s slave state history, and the shooting in Ferguson just two hours east of the Columbia campus, contribute to a tense campus climate. A series of prejudiced acts at the university over recent years exposed holes in administration control and left black students unsure of their position on campus.

Rows of seats in lecture halls sat empty as students supported protests by holding walkouts. I was handed a flier promoting

a student center merchandise boycott; some students did not want to support MU as a business during this time. My Facebook and Instagram feeds filled with inflammatory posts supporting or denouncing the protesters.

At first, I wanted to stay out of the fray.

I am a white, 19-year-old woman from a fairly homogeneous Denver suburb.

How could I understand enough to participate meaningfully? My first reactions were of anxiety and avoidance.

But then I realized, as a Christian, as a journalist, and as a human being, I must be willing to enter into the tension.

I stood in protest crowds and watched people of different races, areas of study and ages embrace one another. I listened to a black student share an instance when strangers made gorilla noises and beat their chests at him. I saw grief on classmates’ faces and imagined their minds reeling with times they’d experienced discrimination or outright hatred — how those past moments must have felt so present.

It took witnessing these events for me to confront my own biases and think critically about race relations, not abstractly this time, but alongside those who experience it every day.

After many conversations with friends and family, I started asking one question: How do we sort through arguments and layered emotions to reach a core where we can unite and make change?

I’ve been part of a deeply distressed community before. The shooting at Arapahoe High School my senior year disrupted our peace and left us with

many questions. But parents, counselors, teachers, friends and other schools in the area responded with strength and cooperation.

Protests, walkouts and media attention interrupted the university and overshadowed conversations about practically anything else. Violent threats on social media threw students into confusion and fear, and I found myself saying similar prayers to those I had said two years ago.

The issues and circumstances are different; however, seeing Arapahoe redeemed gives me a sustained hope for community revival.

Discussions in classes, at my campus ministry and at church have taught me my experiences and perspectives are not the whole truth. I have some listening to do. I must acknowledge what I don’t know, and understand that sometimes I’ll have to ask awkward questions to combat my ignorance.

I am challenged to see beneath the surface.

The young man from the gorilla story said racism dehumanizes everyone involved and degrades people to one dimension. My subconscious biases sometimes prevent me from looking at people and understanding their lives hold as many intricacies as my own.

Moving to Missouri’s diversity has shown me how challenging this can be.

I must continuously check my thoughts and fight off immediate judgments. It can be an exhausting daily exercise, but growth is worth it.

The university has made administrative changes and created positions

focused on inclusion. I am hopeful for any move toward reconciliation, but we will have to wait and see how these will directly affect individual temperaments.

I am most optimistic about a diversitytraining program required of all faculty, staff and incoming students beginning in January. They will be informed about campus racism issues, diverse organizations and resources, and personal responsibilities toward inclusivity.

I’ve received emails from the university sharing plans, promising we will get to a better place eventually. I’ve read columns and reflections and social media posts expressing analogous calls to action.

What sticks out to me most is the role of the Christian Gospel, and how these events challenge my faith to walk the walk.

Colossians 3 says we are to “bear with one another” despite our grievances. My pastor at The Crossing Church in Columbia said love and humility are attractive to all people — that’s how to approach these difficult topics.

Racism is a real and immediate problem: We must be willing to stick around and listen to those voices that erupt out of frustration, examine our own hearts, and then share our experiences with others who have not been exposed directly to ongoing prejudice and discrimination.

That would be a start to healing the pain.

I’m thankful that the next generation of our family is well on their way in the world. We have two great-nephews, ages two years and two months. And recently found out that another nephew and his wife also have a child on the way.

I’m thankful for all the new friends I’ve met since early retirement has given me the opportunity to get more involved in my community.

I’m thankful that the 2015 local election season is over and thankful I was able to exercise my right as an American to participate in the process.

Most of all, I’m thankful for life’s most difficult challenges because they have taught me so much about myself and the kind of person I want to strive to be.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Doubtful of union fairness Michael Alcorn’s Nov. 12 column expresses the wish that “IF” the compensation system for teachers in Jeffco would permit Pattie Nelson to receive the desired compensation level that the free market system would, it would be great. I happen to agree with this wish. I submit, however, that as long as the newly elected Jeffco school board is dominated by the teachers’ union, as it now is, it will never be possible that the Pattie Nelsons will ever be so treated.

Harold Hein, Arvada Violence begets violence Once again, the horrific results of militarism and war are being used to justify more militarism and war. Omitting the violence of the attacks by NATO, the U.S. and our allies in the Middle East from much of the discussion on the terrorist attacks in Turkey, Paris, Lebanon, and other parts of the world it is implied that terrorism is unconnected. It portrays these attacks as simply the work of bad people that can be stopped with more bombs, more resolve and less freedom. In reality, suicide terrorist attacks are motivated by an occupation of land the terrorists care about. The terrorists “from” Europe and the U.S. are recruited with pictures of the victims of NATO and U.S. violence.

Before we sacrifice more soldiers, resources or freedoms, we need to stop doing what is increasing the power of ISIS. This means no more drone attacks, no more bombings, no more dumping arms into the region that end up in the hands of ISIS. Then we need to demand that our wealthy “friends” in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar stop funding Sunni terrorism and Turkey close its borders to fighters going into Syria. We need to lead an arms embargo and negotiations with all parties.

If we do not begin to play a less violent role in the Middle East, it is naive to believe we can stop all terrorist attacks that our violence inspires.

Jerry D. Means, Sr., born January 3, 1940 in Charleston, West Virginia to Guy and Clara Means passed away at 75 years of age on November 20, 2015 in Lake Havasu City, AZ. After High School he joined the U.S. Air Force. He married Karolyn Goldman, moved to Chicago, Illinois and started their family; Cindy Means of Holcomb, KS, Voni McDonald of Arvada, CO, Suzy Bennett of Gilbertville, Iowa and Jerry

Means of Westminster, CO. He was “Papa” and “Great Papa” to many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first grandson, Jesse McDonald.

Jerry retired after 40 years to Lake Havasu City, AZ where he and Karolyn spent 16 happy years.

There will be a celebration of life after holidays in Kansas and Summer at Steamboat Cove with special friends.

Past board actions were misrepresented at this meeting and the public commentsbefore-agenda-action rule was immediately broken.

Grassroot’s parent initiative? JCEA’s recall and election campaign (nom-de-plume: Jeffco United for Action) was aided by the AFL-CIO/ NEA and misrepresented petition and ballot language.

We’re thrilled to now have this connection to our schools: AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, who took the fifth before Congress.

New board members, you must be so proud.

Tom Graham, Arvada Parent concerned about new board As a parent of three Jeffco students, I am concerned after attending the first board meeting with the new “Clean Slate” school

board members. I had hoped that after the swearing-in ceremony, and as the new board presented ideas for how to improve education in Jefferson County, that I would have heard something, anything, about student achievement. Instead, I heard many board members talk about going back to the “traditions of excellence” that Jefferson county public education used to represent.

When was that time period exactly? Was it under the purview of former superintendent, Cindy Stevenson, when we had a high school where 95 percent of 10th graders did not test proficient in math? Was it when there were 1,200 students every year that didn’t graduate on time? While it is true that there will no longer be acrimony and dissent within the board, how does this help our children?

This board needs to be talking strategies for developing and inspiring excellence in our schools, in curriculum, in the teachers of Jeffco. That means ensuring new teachers are encouraged and financially rewarded.

It means making sure current teachers are highly-effective and held accountable — just like we are in our own jobs. It means taking a hard look at what types of teaching methods

and curriculum are working in traditional, option and charter schools, and what isn’t.

It means engaging students, inspiring them, and not simply teaching to the test. It means not giving the teachers’ unions everything they want, but what is in the best interest of our children. I implore these board members to always have improving student achievement in the forefront of their minds.

That is what our children deserve, and what they must have in order to succeed in life.

Kim Gilmartin, Littleton More than just parents behind recall Judy Denison of Golden insisted in her letter that only parents were responsible for the recall. If that’s really true, then the parents of Jefferson County should be embarrassed. To begin with, do responsible parents call in sick from their jobs when they are not sick? And what kind of example does that send to their children? Do responsible parents allow their children to stand on street corners and wave signs in protest based on faulty information? Do responsible parents purposely tell lies?

Let’s take my questions one at a time.

Were the parents behind the sick-out? I doubt it. But I have no doubt that the union was behind it. Second, why didn’t anyone, including parents, try to find the truth about what Julie Williams said about curriculum?

How does a suggestion to look at the AP curriculum become offensive unless you are trying to be offended? That also smells of union influence. Lastly, many lies were told about the recalled board. As a parent, I would be sure of what I’m saying in front of my children. One of the often repeated lies concerned the board meetings. It was claimed that there was too much secrecy.

The truth is that the recalled board was more, not less, open than the previous board. The recalled board wanted open meetings with the teachers’ union, something previous boards never did. That’s a good thing, but parents being led around by the union never considered that.

Judy Denison got the board she wanted.

But she should not fool herself into thinking the teachers’ union had nothing to do with the course of events.

Speak up: Local voices matter Leadership Arvada explores role of government from council and citizen viewpoints

As I walked up to the microphone, I thought I was ready.

I had practiced my one-minute speech about a construction defects ordinance for hours throughout the week leading up to the meeting, and felt prepared. But as I began to speak, my voice trembled, my hands started to lightly shake and I found myself wanting more time.

At 25 years old, I’ve been covering Arvada and its city council for nearly 2 1/2

years as a reporter for The Arvada Press.

On most Monday nights, you can find me sitting in the left corner of the council chambers with my laptop ready, listening to proceedings, taking notes and observing those in the room.

From local Boy Scout troops leading the Pledge of Allegiance to concerned citizens weighing in on the night’s topic, I’ve seen and heard just about everything.

But what I hadn’t noAnderson ticed was the courage it takes to ask something from your city government. And how importance that task is.

I’m a part of this year’s Arvada Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Arvada class. This is a nine-month course designed to take Arvada leaders on an exclusive tour of the city, learning the ins and outs of how it operates, who and

what make up the community, and how to lead — personally, as part of a team and in the workplace.

In our third class, we had the opportunity to experience from a variety of viewpoints what it’s like to be on city council or be part of the proceedings. We role-played the positions of nine councilmembers, including the mayor, and a large handful of concerned citizens. Our task: Should the Township of Carlyle pass a construction defects ordinance. If so, how would it look?

As a millennial, I took to this position with passion as it has the possibility to directly affect me and where I choose to live. I favored an ordinance of some kind.

I wanted to see more condominiums and townhomes built so those like me — young, professional, with a small income — could afford to purchase a home in the city in which we live, work and play.

olunteering helps the community, but it can also help the volunteer.

Countless opportunities exist throughout the year for people to assist those in need. But there’s something about the holidays that inspires many to share their abundance even more.

And that helping hand is good not only for the recipient, but also for the giver.

Kruger started Project Helping as a way to connect people with organizations in need of volunteers. According to the organization’s research, volunteering increases happiness by

“We support events to maximize the benefits for all involved,” Kruger said. “That means a focus on hands-on, interactive events. There’s a great ripple effect created in the community that starts by helping others out.”

The Project Healing website is constantly updated with new opportunities in the metro area, and the organization puts a lot of effort into making sure the sign-up process is as straightforward as possible.

“One of the biggest complaints we hear from people is that oftentimes the registration process to participate in an event is cumbersome,” Kruger said. “We do all the back-end work for people, so it’s out of the way.”

One of the most popular ways to volunteer this time of year is by donating food and goods. Churches and nonprofits annually hold drives that focus on everything from food to warm clothing to toys.

Golden’s Christian Action Guild provides gift cards to its clients for Thanksgiving, but its Santa Shop needs toy donations.

“We have a small group of volunteers who help us run the shop,” said Joyce Sutton, president of the guild. “What we always need is the

gift for the children in need.”

The Action Center collects toy donations throughout the year for its five-day Santa Shop in December, which requires about 600 volunteers.

According to Penning, the need for volunteers never stops.

A key to making volunteering fun is embracing the social aspect, and Kruger and Penning said groups of all ages — from Boy and Girl Scouts to family teams — get together to share in sharing.

“We need around 10 volunteers a day just to keep our food pantry and other operations running,” Penning said. “Sometimes, people don’t know the best way to get involved, but every contribution matters.”

Stephanie “Steve” Longsdorf has been volunteering with the Action Center for a decade.

She loves the program and its local aspect.

“I’ve always been really happy to do this, because there’s always something you can do for your neighbor,” she said. “I always feel really good about helping people, and all it is is a matter of opening the door and reaching out.”

Airport hotel is key piece of old vision More than 20 years after visionary planners conceived of a modern, globally connected airport with an on-site hotel and rail service to downtown Denver, the Nov. 19 opening of the Westin Denver International Airport completed that decades-old vision.

Denver International Airport joined with Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock and Westin Hotels and Resorts in celebrating the opening of the Westin Denver International Airport hotel and conference center and its adjoining openair plaza, which sit upon the airport’s new transit center that is set to open in April 2016. Together, these projects make up the DEN Hotel and Transit Center.

The glass and steel structure comprises more than 433,000 square feet.

The modern hotel and conference center offers 519 guest rooms, 35 spacious suites and a 37,500-square-foot conference center. The conference center includes two ballrooms and 15 additional meeting rooms and boardrooms of varying sizes. The largest ballroom encompasses 7,500 square feet, accommodating up to 750 people. The meeting space’s most dramatic feature is a 10,000-square-foot pre-function area showcasing a panoramic, three-story, floor-to-ceiling glass wall that is approximately 100 feet wide.

Guests of the Westin Denver International Airport can take advantage of RTD’s new University of Colorado A Line on April 22. The new light-rail service will take passengers from DIA to Den-

ver Union Station in about 37 minutes.

Airport CEO Kim Day added: “(The) opening of the Westin Denver International Airport marks the achievement of a major milestone toward our goal of solidifying DEN’s place on the world map, expanding economic growth in our region and elevating the overall travel experience in and through the Mile High City.”

GVR’s Thomas feted I’ve said it before, but when you Google “customer service,” Steve Thomas’ picture pops up.

Thomas, a 14-year assistant golf pro at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, was roasted and toasted recently at the historic Cherry Creek North home of the golf course owner and head of Oakwood Homes Pat Hamill.

He is leaving the golf club, where he’s worked since it opened, to work with at his brother’s trucking business as well as trying his hand at day trading.

Hamill, who spoke during the festivities, warned Thomas the testimonials would be a combination of “honoring and roasting.”

“This occasion gives me a heavy heart,” Hamill said. “You will always be a part of the family.”

GVR President Kevin Laura called Thomas “the king of guest service.” He said, “You are the ambassador of GVR.” To honor Thomas’ 14 years, Laura presented the man of the hour with the first Steven Mark Thomas Certificate of Merit, an award that the golf club plans to award annually to an employee who exhibits outstanding hospitality. Laura also awarded Thomas a lifetime honorary membership to the golf course — including a golf cart — the highest level of membership.

Thomas, who seemed a bit overwhelmed by the attention, said, “I’m fighting back tears. Every last one of you guys are family to me. We were there, and we did that.”

Ice rink opens downtown The Downtown Denver Partnership

and Southwest Airlines kicked off the sixth consecutive year of the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park at 16th and Arapahoe on Nov. 24.

Southwest Airlines and the Downtown Denver Partnership invited families from Children’s Hospital Colorado to the Southwest Rink to be among the first to skate on the freshly frozen ice.

Rink season runs through Feb. 15. The Southwest Rink offers free ice skating seven days a week. Skaters are welcome to bring their own skates or rent a pair for $2.

Arvada’ Center’s ‘White Christmas’ a wonderful production “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” is “must-see” theater at The Arvada Center.

Based on the full house on the evening my daughter, son-in-law and I saw it, that was a very wise choice. And it wasn’t even opening night.

Fast forward again, and we find all four performers at the Vermont inn where they are greeted at the desk by Martha Watson (Sharon Kay White). They soon learn that the inn is owned by retired Gen. Waverly, who is about to lose the inn because of lack of business.

In true musical theater tradition, the four singers decide to put on a show and invite all their old Army buddies and their families to come to the show and save the inn for the general whom they all love. Of course, after overcoming many challenges, it works beautifully, the two couples fall in love, etc.

It’s a wonderful production, as I’ve come to expect at the Arvada Center. The

strong and talented cast performs without a hitch. Tunes include “Blue Skies,” “Sisters,” “Happy Holidays” and “White Christmas.” Little Susan Waverly, the general’s granddaughter (Darcey Keating/ Darrow Klein), steals the show with her reprise of Martha’s (also show-stopping) “Let Me Sing And I’m Happy.” And Page is stellar in his performance as General Waverly.

Senate District 19 candidates rev up for 2016 Sen. Laura Woods and opponent Rachel Zenzinger face off again

By Crystal Anderson canderson@coloradocommunitymedia.com A little truth is what Senator Laura Woods (R-19) and her Democratic opponent, Rachel Zenzinger, said they’d like to see this election season.

What that truth is, however, varies.

“I want to shed light on the differences in my voting record and her voting record,” Zenzinger said. “My overarching goal is to really listen to the citizens and work to find good compromises that will really work well for the district.”

“The goal of my campaign is to get the true message out about who I am and what I stand for — a lot is being said that

is untrue,” Woods said. “The goal will be to reach the voters, to knock on their doors and introduce myself, and to give them another version of the story they’ve heard in the media.”

The duo is heading back to the campaign trail leading up to their 2016 matchup for the Senate District 19 seat, currently held by Woods. The dis- Woods trict represents Arvada and Westminster.

In 2014, the pair ran a tight campaign through election season, with Woods winning the seat by 1.05 percent or 663 votes.

Over the past year, Zenzinger, who briefly held the seat in 2014, said she saw decisions being made with extreme poli-

tics in mind, something she wishes to eradicate. Policies on veterans, women equality and tuition were opposed by Woods in favor of federal policies and politics, said Zenzinger, who plans to focus on middle-class families, small businesses and children.

“I was really disappointed by the incumbent’s record — she did Zenzinger not represent the city of Arvada very well,” Zenzinger said. “I feel like our district deserves somebody who’s going to work for them and put the extreme politics aside.”

Woods said she’s running not only to shed light on her reputation, but also to get more work done at the state level and hear the opinions of citizens.

“We have just begun to make the positive changes in Colorado that our citizens demanded from us,” she said. “There is still much work to be done to put education back in the hands of parents, back in the hands of teachers; to lessen the regulatory burdens on Colorado businesses, as well as relieve the tax burdens they face; and to educate the public about Proposition 20 (self-pay health care bill).”

Over the next year, the two will be knocking on doors, hosting town halls and meetings, and seeking citizen input on issues important to them.

“We have a do-nothing Congress and I don’t want a do-nothing state legislature,” Zenzinger said. “We need to find solutions that work.”

To qualify for Santa House, families must bring their school’s voucher (given to students in November), a current form of identification and a piece of mail to verify their financial status. Families will be walked through the house by an elf, who will be their personal shopper helping them choose gifts from among books, gloves and hats, games, toys, Christmas

decorations and more.

“We all live in Arvada and think things are good for everybody,” said Joel Folk, a volunteer with the organization. “This is another example that not everyone has it as good as somebody else.”

Organizations from across the city have offered tables, wrapping paper, toy drives, volunteers and more, something both Folk and Youse said they couldn’t do without.

“My biggest take-away is what a process it is to do this and what it takes,” Folk said. “It takes terrific community involvement and effort by our volunteers … It’s a good feeling to have the community support.”

Santa House is open for donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through Dec. 19. Money, toys, clothing and books are welcome.

I wrote my speech and practiced over and over until it was right. But at the microphone, I failed. It was all I could do to hit the highlights and make them laugh.

As a journalist, I attend these meetings regularly. I watch as ordinances are turned into law, individuals and businesses are recognized for their work, businesses submit proposals to open a new store, inter-governmental agreements are formed, and developers try to convince the council why their development will benefit the city.

But having never spoken for or against an item, I underestimated what impact that has on council decisions.

Honestly, if not for my job, I most likely wouldn’t be a regular at council meetings.

But the reality is: Local voices matter.

By attending council, community members show their support or concern for not only an issue, but also for the city. They become aware of the issues, they provide input, and things change. If no one showed up, the seven-member council would make

Recently, Arvada dealt with two major issues of legislation where community opinion changed the game: The ban on e-cigarettes and the passing of a construction defects ordinance.

In both of these examples, citizens took the time to write out their thoughts and present them to council. In the case of e-cigarettes, a ban was passed but with an amendment to allow tasting in vapor shops so these businesses wouldn’t lose clientele.

With construction defects, several

individuals spoke for the ordinance, citing market trends, needs and personal experiences. The result: Council passed an ordinance that places a plat note on the property that requires all construction defects issues go to mandatory arbitration, rather than court.

These are just two of many issues that come before council each week.

And after experiencing the proceedings from a different perspective, I can tell you it takes courage, conviction — and a little light-heartedness — but your voice matters.

Many who gain weight from now until Jan. 1 never actually lose those extra pounds, according to Colorado State University’s Kendall Anderson Nutrition Center.

But don’t fear — simple tips and tricks abound to avoid the seemingly inevitable holiday pounds.

Interviews with area residents and fitness experts combined with research from health websites offer the following mix of personal experience and professional advice.

Foremost, start your day with exercise, whether it’s 15 minutes of jump rope or an hour walk around the block. It’s a natural energy booster and ensures better behavior throughout the day, according to health.com.

“I have to work out first thing in the day,” Golden resident Kallie Leyba said. “If I ‘schedule’ it later in the day, I will always have a reason not to do it.”

She also uses an app to track her daily activities. Smartphone apps, such as MyFitnessPal, Lose It and SparkPeople, log food consumption, caloric intake and exercise. To top it off, they’re free.

Local documentary spotlights women in politics ‘Strong Sisters’ film set to premiere before 2016 presidential election

By Alex DeWind adewind@coloradocommunitymedia.com Meg Froelich and Laura Hoeppner spent the past three years making a documentary about a unique and powerful group in Colorado — women in politics.

And, after 75 interviews and endless hours putting the pieces together of a historical film titled, “Strong Sisters: Elected Women in Colorado,” it is now in its final editing stage. Set to finish early next year before the 2016 presidential elections, it will premiere at local venues and film festivals.

“We want people to learn about the history of women in legislature,” Froelich said. “And not base their decisions off the perspective of one woman running for president.”

Froelich and Hoeppner met in graduate school at the University of Michigan.

They shared a passion for history. Froelich moved to New York City where she produced documentaries, and Hoeppner relocated to Centennial and served as executive director of the Colorado Legislative Women’s Caucus.

The lifelong friends remained in touch and, one day over lunch, Froelich suggested they make a movie. She had background in video production and Hoeppner had met dozens of women in the legislature. Their strengths, they believed, complemented each other.

So they began the quest to dig up individual and overarching stories of powerful women in Colorado.

“We want to find out if something different occurs when there are women in legislature,” Froelich said.

Historically, the state has significant political milestones.

Women in Colorado won the right to vote in an 1893 referendum. The follow-

The state legislature today is comprised of 42 percent

women, the highest in the nation, according to strongsisters.org.

“We feel after talking to these folks,” Froelich said, “having women in legislature makes all the difference in the world.”

Teeth may be added to winter driving rules

Be careful — it’s getting slick out there.

Almost every Colorado driver has either heard these words or spoken them at some point during the winter months.

Law enforcement agencies across the state and the Colorado Department of Transportation are raising awareness about the importance of taking certain precautions when driving in inclement weather conditions.

“Ultimately, it comes down to safety,” said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis. “Be prepared ahead of time. We would rather educate than enforce.”

Lately, CDOT has noted that some

motorists aren’t taking proper safety precautions before heading out in inclement weather, said agency spokesman Bob Wilson. So, implementation of two laws — which have been in effect for the past 20 years, but rarely enforced — may occur if weather conditions are severe enough.

“It’s always prudent to have the proper equipment,” Wilson said. “It’s not something we take lightly — it’s for the safety of the traveling public.”

The Traction Law requires that vehicles are either four-wheel drive or have snow tires or tires with a mud/snow designation installed. The law also requires that all tires have a one-eighth-inch tread. The Passenger Vehicle Chain Law requires that every vehicle on the roadway have chains

or an alternative traction device, such as AutoSock, installed.

The laws will be activated only when weather conditions require it. When the laws are in effect, motorists will be alerted by highway signage. Alerts also will be posted online at www.COtrip.org, or people can sign up for GovDelivery emails and/or text notifications.

When the laws are in effect, a motorist without the proper equipment can be cited and fined $130. If the vehicle blocks the roadway or causes an accident, the motorist could be fined more than $650.

Both laws can be implemented throughout the entire state. However, this winter, the main focus is on mountain driving, and motorists will most likely

only see the laws in effect along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor and connecting highways.

The Traction and Passenger Vehicle Chain laws are to “help people get from point A to point B,” Wilson said. Even in inclement weather conditions, people still need to get to work, school, activities or other places, he said.

The laws will require all motorists, not just semi-trucks and other similar vehicles that have had to abide by these rules for years, to be properly equipped when the weather is bad, Wilson said.

Accidents can occur when equipment is not adequate, he said. “All it takes is one vehicle to cause a lot of havoc.”

Green Mountain goalie going for gold Nicole Hensley, a Green Mountain graduate, is a goalie on the Lindenwood University women’s hockey team.

As a youth, she competed in the Foothills Hockey Association and is hoping to play for the United States in the 2018 Olympics.

Hensley’s Lindenwood team in Saint Charles, Missouri, isn’t strong, but she headed into her senior season with 1,147 saves, a .920 saves percentage and a 2258-8 record.

During her freshman year, she made 90 saves in a loss to Robert Morris.

Lindwood is 3-9-2 so for this season and Hensley has gone 2-6-2 with a 2.77 goals against average with 322 saves.

For the seventh time in her career she was named College Hockey America Goalie of the Week for Oct. 26-Nov.1 after leading the Lady Lions to a 1-0-1 record against Ohio State. She made 64 saves in the two games against the Buckeyes.

There’s a new team in town Castle View will have a hockey team that will compete in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Peak Conference.

It will be a co-op squad with players coming from Castle View, Douglas County, Ponderosa, Legend and Chaparral. Al Quintana is the coach.

Quintana was head coach at Bishop Machebeuf from 2003-12 and made the state playoffs eight of nine seasons, won two conference titles and was the state runner-up in 2005.

He also coached at St. Mary’s in Colorado Springs between 1987-93 and made two final four appearances. His overall coaching record is 185-98-3.

Castle View’s team will practice and play games at Colorado Sports Center in Monument.

A snowstorm made it difficult for players, officials, spectators and those trying to remove accumulating snow from the fields.

At Valor Stadium in Highlands Ranch prior to the Eagles’ game against Ralston Valley, a truck with a blade plowed the field prior to the teams coming onto the field. Men with snow shovels kept scooping snow off the line markers and sidelines while the teams were warming up. At halftime, the field was plowed again.

Neither snow, wind nor cold kept the teams from playing.

Phase two of Diamond Project Phase Two of Emily Moore’s Diamond Project stepped into the batter’s box for eight days surrounding Thanksgiving.

Moore, the Chaparral High School senior, started the first stage of the project over a year ago by gathering donated softball equipment for girls that was sent

to the Dominican Republic.

Moore, 11 other softball players, six baseball players, a few parents, Wolverines softball and baseball coach Alan DiGiosio plus Angie Bennett of Community Connection International left for the Dominican Republic on Nov. 21 to see the rewards of the donations and get a taste of the Dominican culture.

The players were scheduled to compete in a softball tournament, put on a clinic and perform a service project.

Venue change The boys and girls 3A state basketball tournament will not be played at Colorado School of Mines this season, according to CHSAA. The tournaments have been moved to the Denver Coliseum from March 10-12 because of a scheduling conflict at Mines.

Class 5A boys and girls Great 8 tournaments are scheduled at the Coliseum the weekend prior to the 3A state tournament.

ThunderRidge girls ranked No. 1 CHSAANow.com has released the boys and girls preseason basketball rankings.

ThunderRidge is top-ranked in the Class 5A girls poll, with Highlands Ranch third, Lakewood fifth, Cherry Creek sixth and Ralston Valley seventh.

Matt Asik, a ThunderRidge assistant for the past 11 years, is the Grizzlies new head coach and takes over a team that features standout players Taylor Rusk, Alyssia Martinez and Jaz’myne Snipes.

fifth. Valor’s Jessika Caldwell made her Eagles’ coaching debut last season and won a state title.

Lutheran is fifth in the 3A girls poll.

In the 5A boys basketball rankings, Legend is second and ThunderRidge third while Valor Christian is second in the 4A boys poll, with Golden fifth. Lutheran starts the season as the eighth-ranked team in the boys 3A rankings.

Ralston Valley is third in the preseason hockey rankings with defending state champion Cherry Creek fourth and Mountain Vista sixth.

More proposed football conference alignments Proposed football conference alignments for Class 4A, 3A and 2A have been announced by CHSAA. The Class 5A alignments were previously announced and all the proposed placements must be approved by the CHSAA Legislative Council in January.

Golden and Heritage, dropping down from 5A, will be in the six-team Class 4 Central league. Central 2 will include Standley Lake, Thornton and Wheat Ridge. Littleton will be in Southern 2 and Ponderosa in the Southern 3.

Lutheran will play in the Class 3A Metro I conference.

Conference A in the Class 2A Conference alignment included Elizabeth and Englewood.

‘What a feeling:’ Panthers head to 5A state championship Pomona defeats Columbine to face Valor for the trophy

But a missed extra point and the Pomona defense’s knock-down of a Hail Mary pass as time ran out resulted in the Panthers’ 21-20 win in the state Class 5A football semifinal game at Jeffco’s Northern Area Athletic Complex.

“It feels great to go back to state, and it has been a long time coming,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said after the game.

“This group of kids deserves to go to state.

They played hard all year. We played the toughest schedule we could find, and they responded every time.”

Key moments: Sunshine peeked through briefly but did nothing to dispel the freezing temperatures or deflect the icy wind as the two teams slugged it out through a scoreless first quarter. Columbine standout Mikey Griebel scored a Rebel touchdown in the second quarter, but the Panthers responded with a pair of TDs to lead 14-7 at halftime. Each team scored a second-half touchdown and Columbine lined up for the extra-point try with 1:06 left on the clock to tie the score.

The ball sailed less than a foot wide of the right upright so Pomona led 21-20.

The Rebels tried an onside kick — the ball squirted away on the ground from the first Panther and a teammate dove for it.

It seemed all 22 players ended up in the pile, but the wall went to Pomona.

Pomona went to victory snaps but Columbine recovered on a fumble for a final opportunity to win the game. With the final seconds ticking, Rebels quarterback Jake Lowry threw a Hail Mary pass.

But three Pomona defenders closed in and knocked the ball to the ground to seal

the win.

Key players/statistics: Pomona gained most of the yardage on the ground and, unofficially, running back Cameron Gonzales, a junior, carried 17 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Ryan Marquez carried eight times for 47 yards. The weather didn’t favor the passing game, but Marquez completed six of 10 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Max Borghi, a sophomore, gained about 30 yards rushing, but also caught a touchdown pass. Cornerback Tyler Thimsen, a junior, kicked all three extra points.

They said it: Coach Madden said it had to be heartbreaking for Columbine to miss the extra point that decided the game.

“We had our own heartbreaks over the years. But we knew we would face adversity and challenges because Columbine is a great football team,” he said. “We told the kids at halftime to just keep playing and doing what we do. I think we had too much stuff going on in the first half. I told the kids we were just going back to being Pomona. We did and it worked.”

Marquez, a sophomore, said it was difficult to express his feeling about heading for state.

“This is an amazing feeling as we came together as a team to win this game,” said Marquez, who completed two key long passes, one for a touchdown and the other to set up what proved to be the winning touchdown.

“Our coaches called the right play at the right time,” he said. “We got ahead and during that final minute or so, each second felt like 10 minutes, and you kept telling the clock to move faster until it finally went to zero and we won the game.

What a feeling.”

Going forward: Pomona will play Valor for the state Class 5A football championship at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Valor comes into the game with an

11-2 record. The Eagles run a balanced attack, gaining 2,829 yards passing and 1,801 yards rushing. Dylan McCaffrey is the quarterback. He has completed 187 of

292 passes for 2,606 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has carried the ball 114 times for 540 yards and has 83 yards as a pass receiver.

‘It was a good year for us.

But they’re a good team’

By Brent New Special to Colorado Community Media Wheat Ridge quarterback Gino Tate finally got a running lane late in the fourth quarter, swiftly outrunning the defense for a 38-yard touchdown.

Before that, he spent most of the time going backward.

Tate was knocked to the ground on most of his pass attempts, forcing him into three interceptions. And the No. 8 Farmers didn’t cross midfield until the fourth quarter as they lost to top-seeded Pine Creek 43-8 in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs on Nov. 21 at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs.

“Their defense was really fast and made plays,” Tate said. “We weren’t used to that kind of speed.”

Wheat Ridge shaped its identity this season by knocking off red-hot teams one by one. In the regular season it snapped George Washington’s and Denver South’s winning streaks at five games. And last week it beat Fort Collins in the first round of the postseason to end its streak at seven games.

But the two-time defending champion Eagles were a different beast altogether.

Linebacker Kacin Nowlin had a pick-six and recovered a fumble near the goal line to help push the Eagles to 36-0 at the half.

Pine Creek then went up 43-0 on a 13-yard jump ball from Brock Domann to brother JoJo early in the third quarter. That started the running clock — a familiar sight for Pine Creek, which won its 37th consecutive game.

“We stopped a lot of streaks this year and were hoping to do the same today,” said coach Stacy Coryell, the Farmers third coach in four years. “But you can’t when you’re turning the ball over and making mistakes.”

Tate threw picks on the Farmers first two drives. His second came after he was hit in the pocket and his attempt went end over end into the arms of Nowlin, who then returned it 32 yards to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Later in the half, the Farmers had a mishap on a long snap that led to a safety. And then a fumble on a punt return was recovered at their 4-yard line.

“You go out and work hard and try to make things happen,” Nowlin said. “When you work hard, sometimes you get lucky and good things happen.”

Tate’s 38-yard rushing TD ended the shutout bid with 5:58 remaining.

“It was a good year for us,” Tate said. “But they’re a good team. They deserve to win.”

Mines runners bring home first national championship title Men’s team wins NCAA Division II cross-country meet

By Christy Steadman csteadman@coloradocommunitymedia.com Between school and training, the athletes on the Colorado School of Mines men’s cross-country team hadn’t had a day off since June.

But the hard work paid off: On Nov. 21 in Joplin, Missouri, the men won the first national championship title in Oredigger history.

“It’s a really cool feeling,” said Marty Andrie, a senior studying mechanical engineering at School of Mines who holds the school’s all-time record for running a 5K at 13:57. This is the last year he will compete on the cross-country team. “It’s exciting to go out on a high note.”

Seven of the team’s 28 athletes competed against 32 schools at the NCAA Division II national cross-country meet.

The victory was unexpected, said runner Nathanael Williams, a junior studying metallurgical and materials engineering.

Runners were just hoping to come home with a trophy.

The Orediggers were ranked fourth by the coaches’ association, Williams said.

Based on performance, “we thought it was appropriate.”

But at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Association Cross Country Championships on Oct. 24 in Alamosa, the team finished second, coming in 16 points behind three-time national champs, Adams State University. And on Nov. 7, at the South Central Regionals hosted by West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, the Orediggers again came in second to Adams State.

The disappointment motivated the team, head coach Chris Siemers said.

“The team stayed strong and kept believing in each other,” he said. “That’s how

they came out on top. They didn’t give up on each other.”

Mines is academically tough, said cross-country athlete Dan Mahoney, a junior studying geophysical engineering.

And participating in sports is an additional two-to-three-hour-a-day commitment, he added.

“You don’t understand what it means to be an athlete at Mines until you are one,” Mahoney said. “Everybody is really happy.”

Mines alumni, family, friends and teammates traveled to Joplin to cheer on the Orediggers at the national meet. And when they arrived home, at least 50 to 60 students greeted them at Marv Kaye Stadium in Golden singing the fight song.

The women’s team also deserves some recognition, Siemers said. This is the second year it has qualified for nationals and finished 19th out of 32 schools.

“They gave it their all, too. We’re all one big team here at Mines,” Siemers said, thanking assistant coaches Alexa Rogers and Andrew Epperson for the “good dynamic” they brought to the team.

The title the men’s cross-country team brought home is something not only Mines athletics can be proud of, Siemers said. It also belongs to the greater Golden community.

“The community as a whole should know what these student athletes can do,” he said. “We run the streets in Golden. If you live here, you’ve seen the cross-country team training.”

Mines athletic director David Hansburg said it is an unbelievable feeling to have reached his goal of bringing home the first team national championship.

“This is Mines history,” Hansburg said. “They are the first to do it. They will always be the first, and I hope they carry that pride with them for the rest of their lives.”

Ralston Valley loses to Valor in snow-blown quarterfinal Loss disappoints, but team is proud of season: ‘We have treated each other like brothers’

Ralston Valley’s loss to home-standing Valor Christian in last Friday’s Class 5A state quarterfinal football game was windblown in more ways than one.

Ralston Valley, coached by Matt Loyd, was defeated by Valor, 42-16, in a snowstorm that didn’t slow down Valor at all.

In fact, it seemed Valor made good use of the blowing wind and snow as the Eagles improved to 10-2, ending the season for the Mustangs, 9-3.

The loss was heartbreaking for Ralston Valley quarterback Ethan Vowles and running back Kyle Rush. And, of course, for Loyd.

“This certainly was a test from a very good opponent,” said Vowles. “It was a snow bowl out there tonight, but we fought hard under the circumstances.

They came out against us and our first half was not good.

“Defensively, we didn’t cover who we needed to cover,” continued Vowles. “But this has been a fun year and we have treated each other like brothers. I’m so proud of our team and my teammates.”

“We had a tough opponent and it took everything we had to put up a good fight,” said Rush. “It’s been a good season and I wouldn’t want to play with anyone else.

We just didn’t execute with our ball handling, blocking and tackles tonight. It has been a tremendous season and these guys have come together as family. There’s no other way I would have wanted it.”

Loyd said the two blocked punts allowed Valor to step up against the Mustangs.

“Our kids were in the game the whole way, despite the score,” Loyd said. “It was a tough night in the weather, for sure.”

But he was not disappointed by the team and the season.

“There were just three teams better than us when the season is considered,”

Loyd said. “I’m pleased with the season and the efforts that the boys put though.

We can look forward to a fine year next season. There was the good and the bad, but these boys put up such fine efforts though the year.”

Valor scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, taking advantage of Ralston Valley mistakes. The first touchdown was the result of a blocked punt by the Eagles’ Jacob Hibben, giving the Eagles the ball at the Ralston 17-yard line. Quarterback Dylan McCaffrey scored first for the Eagles on a 1-yard run.

Valor scored its second touchdown on its next position, a 13-yard run by Tanner Tadra. Tadra scored the eventual game winner early in the second quarter, giving the Eagles a 21-0 lead. They scored two more touchdowns with passes from McCaffrey to Ben Waters for a 35-0 halftime lead.

Under the conditions, this one was over for Ralston Valley early. McCaffrey ended the night completing six-for-six, passing for 108 yards and rushing for 89 yards.

With 9:58 left in the third quarter, McCaffrey scored on a 45-yard run, pushing the Eagles to a 42-0 lead.

Ralston Valley scored the final two touchdowns of the game on a 45-yard run by Vowles, the first play of the fourth quarter, and on a 7-yard run by Rush with 5:40 remaining. The Mustangs were successful on a pair of two-point conversions, as well.
