zine in September and November. And I was part of the opening night for Denver Fashion Weekend on Nov. 9. I collaborated with Sara Brentano, who did the models’ makeup, and Charlie Price on their clothing and hair pieces.

That was my first fashion show. I had seen my work on display on mannequins, but this was the first time I got to see it move. It was a really wonderful event. It was great to see all the local talent as well as the worldrenowned designers that were a part of the event.

I also do pieces made out of woven metal and small silver jewelry for everyday wear. You can see all my work on my website, www.jessemathes. com, and the silver jewelry is at the Foothills Art Center in Golden for its Holiday Art Market.

A metalsmith and stay-at-home mom About me I’m from Denver, originally, and have lived in Arvada since 2012.

In 1995, I moved to San Diego for my undergraduate degree then I went to Indiana University for my graduate degree. Both of them are in metalsmithing.

Then, my husband and I moved to Chicago just for fun in 2005. We were there for six years. Chicago is a cool city, but we missed Colorado, and when we decided to start a family, we wanted to come home.

I met my husband, Nathan Richie, through a friend in 1999, and we got married in 2008 when we were living in Chicago.

I like Arvada. We live in a very friendly community, and we have really wonderful neighbors. Plus, it’s close to my husband’s job with the Golden History Museums, and it’s easy to get to both the mountains and downtown Denver.

defensive about their personal space at some point in their life, so I feel that most people can relate to the idea. I began to imagine ways a woman could establish personal boundaries, and I got inspired by Queen Elizabeth I of England while studying abroad in

Scotland in 1999. She chose to adorn herself in clothing that made her the visual center of a crowd — her prodigious gowns and jewelry enlarged her presence physically and asserted her dominance over her subjects.

New Denver Water rates start March 1 STAFF REPORT

Essential upgrades and new projects to keep Denver Water’s system running smoothly will be paid for with rate changes adopted Nov. 15 by the Denver Board of Water Commissioners.

The new rates take effect March 1, and most Denver residents will see increases of about $2.25 or less if they use water the same as they did in 2017, according to the board.

The multi-year projects driving the rate increase include construction of a water treatment plant, installation of an 8.5-mile water pipeline to replace two pipelines built in the

1930s and 1950s, expansion of Gross Reservoir to provide a more reliable future water supply, construction of a water quality lab, and replacement or repairs on water pipes. Denver Water’s five-year, $125 billion capital plan identifies 143 major projects.

Residents who use 84,000 gallons of water a year can expect to see an annual increase of about $14, which averages to $1.17 per month. Denver customers generally use less than 84,000 gallons per year, while suburban customers tend to use more; 84,000 gallons represents the median water use for all residential customers.

Customers’ water bills include a fixed charge, which helps ensure more

stable revenue for Denver Water, along with a volume rate. The fixed charge is tied to meter size and will increase in 2018 by about $3.50 for most residential customers. To help offset the fixed monthly charge, the charge per 1,000 gallons for many customers will see a small decrease.

Denver Water’s rate structure includes a three-tiered charge for water use (called the volume rate). To keep water affordable, indoor water use — such as bathing, cooking and flushing toilets — is charged at the lowest rate.

Essential indoor water use is determined by averaging the customer’s monthly water use on bills dated from January through March each year.

This is called average winter consumption. Water use above the average winter consumption — typically for outdoor watering — is charged at a higher price.

Individual water bills will depend on how much water a customer uses and whether the customer lives in Denver or is served by one of 66 suburban distributors under contract with Denver Water. The Denver City Charter requires that suburban customers pay the full cost of service, plus an additional amount.

If You’re a Veteran, You Owe It to Yourself to Consider Using a VA Loan As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a mortgage broker — frankly, I don’t think real estate agents should be in that business — but I know enough about VA loans to say that any veteran purchasing a home with a mortgage should ask their lender whether a VA loan might be right for them.

This is particularly true for veterans with a 10% or greater disability, because for them the VA funding fee is waived, making a VA loan an easy choice over a conventional, FHA or even a jumbo loan.

A VA jumbo loan is one that is in excess of the conforming limit, which varies by county (the limit in Jeffco, for example is $493,350). You may think that the VA loan limit is that amount, but that’s merely the limit for 100% financing. You can borrow much more than that amount — up to $1.5 million — as long as you put down at least 25% of the difference between the purchase price and the VA limit.

The following useful information about VA loans was gleaned from the VA’s website: VA home loans are provided by private lenders, such as banks and mortgage companies. VA guarantees a portion of the loan, enabling your lender to provide you with

more favorable terms, including: No down payment as long as the sales price doesn't exceed the appraised value. No private mortgage insurance premium requirement. VA rules limit the amount you can be charged for closing costs. Closing costs may be paid by the seller. The lender can't charge you a penalty fee if you pay the loan off early. VA may be able to provide you some assistance if you run into difficulty making payments.

You should also know that: You don't have to be a first-time homebuyer. You can reuse the benefit. VA-backed loans are assumable, as long as the person assuming the loan qualifies.

Santa House readies for another year of helping families Now in its 12th year, Santa House has provided gifts to 9,337 families and 26,432 children

Over the past 12 years, the Santa House in Arvada has provided gifts to 9,337 families and 26,432 children and its volunteers are getting ready to open for another season.

“It’s really incredible what they do there,” said Lorraine Spears, who has been a volunteer at the Santa House for the past nine years.

Spears shops with clients when they come to the Santa House, which will be open this year Tuesdays through Saturdays for two weeks starting Dec. 5.

“It’s very heartwarming,” she said.

“It’s really fun to go with the clients and know that their kids are going to have a great Christmas.”

The 12th annual Santa House is organized by the Arvada-Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth, an affiliation of Arvada and Wheat Ridge service clubs, and Red Rocks Community College. It was started by Duane Youse and Bill Johnson in 2006 when Youse, who interacted daily with

clients as the director of the Arvada Community Food Bank, saw an unmet need in the Arvada community.

Bringing the Santa House to fruition took a lot of teamwork. Youse, Johnson and members of the ArvadaWheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth took on the job of finding a home for the Santa House, gathering donations, stocking/organizing and helping Santa House visitors.

In the first two years, Arvada Community Food bank clients were referred to the Santa House. After that, organizers focused more on local families by working with economically challenged Arvada and Wheat Ridge elementary schools and enlisted the schools’ help in identifying needy families and children. This year, 17 schools are in the program: Allendale, Arvada K-8, Arvada Head Start, Campbell, Fitzmorris, Foster, Fremont, Kullerstrand, Lawrence, Little, Parr, Peck, Pennington, Secrest, Swanson, Thomson and Vanderhoof.

“We would like to think that families maybe don’t have need anymore, but on the other hand the numbers continue to grow at the food bank,” Youse said. “The number of students in the backpack program indicate that the need is still there, so we’ll be there to help them.”

Since 2006, the Santa House locations have changed, and each year has brought slightly different challenges and rewards. This year, the Santa

With a little more than 4,000 square feet for the Santa House this year, Youse hopes to serve 1,000 local families.

Youse and Joel Folk shared leadership responsibilities at the Santa House for the first 11 years. In 2017, they are passing the torch to longtime Santa House volunteer coordinator Lila Nigh, whose enthusiasm and organizational skills they say will carry the project forward.

All Apex facilities are accepting donations of new and unwrapped toys and clothes for infants through age 12 as well as monetary donations.

Colorado Mills reopens: ‘It feels like being home’ Reconstruction from devastating hailstorm will continue into 2018

For Jim Hildenbrandt and Buck Harris, members of the former Mills Walkers, a group of senior citizens who walked the nearly mile-long paths of the mall since it opened in November 2002, the reopening of most of the mall last week felt like coming home.

“We’ve walked this mall since it was first constructed, and we missed it,” Hildenbrandt said amid the mall’s partial reopening on Nov. 21. “We missed meeting the people that we’d see while we’re walking.”

About 100 of the mall’s 160 stores opened to customers during Thanksgiving week, six months after a devastating May 8 hailstorm ripped open roofs and flooded stores, leaving millions of dollars in damages and lost livelihoods in its wake and siphoning nearly $3 million in sales tax revenue from Lakewood city coffers.

During the months of reconstruction, Hildenbrandt and Harris walked in the Super Target, which reopened shortly after the storm. But it wasn’t the same. Now, both men are looking forward to the group starting back up again.

As the pair left Kataluma Chai, a tea and coffee cafe near Dick’s Sporting Goods, Harris stopped and added: “It feels like being home.”

Significant damage Colorado Mills Mall, 14500 W. Colfax Ave., was far from the only Lakewood business affected by the sudden hailstorm, but it received some of the most significant and costly damage.

The storm battered and breached the roof, and shattered skylights. Rain poured into the mall, causing considerable water damage to common areas, retailers and their stocks.

“People always ask what it was like that day, and for me, it was the sound,” said Kimra Perkins, the mall’s general manager. “It was especially deafening.

And the water damage was immediate.”

In the following weeks and months, some tenants with exterior entrances, including the Yard House restaurant, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Yoga Pad, Super Target, JumpStreet and UA Colorado Mills Stadium 16, reopened.

Simon Property Group, owner of Colorado Mills, said it could not release a cost for reconstruction because the process is still ongoing, but estimates it will be in the “multimillions.”

The mall closure has cost the city about $300,000 to $350,000 a month in tax revenue, said Larry Dorr, Lakewood’s finance director. During Lakewood’s budget process in September and October, Dorr spoke about the closure’s effect on the city’s finances.

“We wouldn’t be fiscally responsible if we weren’t mindful of the mall’s closure,” he told the city council. “We’re forecasting a $2.7 million reduction in 2017 because of the Mills closure.”

For years, Lakewood has been careful about its reserves, which Dorr noted will help with the loss of income from the Mills. By using money from the city’s reserves, the loss will not affect any programs in the city.

“It’s been a long and painful process getting the mall back,” Mayor Adam Paul said. “It’s so important that it was able to be reopened during the holiday season, since this is such a tough time for brick-and-mortar businesses with all the ways to shop online. The timing is crucial.”

At 1.1 million square feet, Colorado Mills is the largest outlet retail center in the state, with 119 outlet and value retail stores. More than 100 of these businesses and restaurants will be open in November and December, including J. Crew Factory, LEGO, Burlington and Victoria’s Secret.

“We wanted to focus on getting people back to work,” Perkins said.

“That’s why we’re opening at this early date, with the support of the city, fire department and so many others.”

TEA AND COFFEE SHOP ‘READY TO SERVE CUSTOMERS AGAIN’ Mailie Medina, owner of Kataluma Chai, wasn’t at Colorado Mills when the May 8 storm happened. But when she received a call from her manager that night, she couldn’t have known how long the road to reopening would take.

“I’m so excited to welcome customers and shoppers back again,” she said. “These past six months have been a long time to wait.”

Kataluma, a tea and coffee cafe located near Dick’s Sporting Goods, has been in the mall since it opened in 2002, and has built up a loyal base of customers who like the taste of chai and who also like supporting a local business. The cafe sells coffee and some baked goods, but the chai is where it shines.

It features hundreds of chai flavors made by staff, and can prepare it anyway the customer wants — hot, iced, blended and even as milkshakes Medina started out as a barista at Kataluma, working there for 12 years before taking over

ownership two years ago.

The storm caused severe water damage to the store, which also lost much of its wooden furniture.

As the mall is 15 years old, part of the reconstruction process has been to update some of the infrastructure to the newest materials and technologies, said Kimra Perkins, the mall’s general manager. This includes LED lights, more sustainable technologies in the bathrooms, and stronger roofing, should another storm roll in.

Which is good news for business owners like Medina.

“I had six employees before the storm and, luckily, they’re all coming back,” she said.

“We’ve been working all night, but we’re ready to serve our customers again.”

Local charities gear up for Colorado Gives Day Participating Jeffco nonprofits number more than 1,660

An old saying goes: A rising tide lifts all boats.

And such is true on Colorado Gives Day. “We always say giving to your local community is best because you’re helping your neighbors,” said Randy Weinert, development manager for Arvada Community Food Bank. “And if we’re helping the people in our community, we’re helping all of the community.”

Colorado Gives Day — Dec. 5 this year — is an annual, statewide event that dedicates one day to increasing philanthropy through online giving.

“On this one day, every year, all of Colorado gets to help Colorado,” said Karen Allen, executive director of Colorado Homeless Families.

More than 2,300 nonprofits and charities from across the state are participating, and more than 1,660 of them are based in or have reach in Jefferson County.

A number of those work hard to help Jeffco’s homeless population.

“Affordable housing for our homeless families is crucial,” Allen said.

“Colorado Gives Day is a great opportunity to help.”

is headquartered in Arvada but serves the greater seven-county metro area, helps provide transitional housing and supportive services to families in need.

“All of them are working families,” Allen said, “they just can’t afford housing in this housing crisis.”

Colorado Homeless Families’ goal is to target the root cause of homelessness by equipping families with the tools and opportunities they need to achieve self-sufficiency.

In fact, in the 30 years the nonprofit has been in existence, 167 people went from homelessness to home ownership, Allen said.

Family Tree, based in Wheat Ridge, is another organization working to support individuals and families who are struggling for a variety of reasons.

Eighty-two percent of every dollar that Family Tree receives goes towards the nonprofit’s programs and services, said Carrie Zwanzig, Family Tree’s director of grants and communications.

That means the percentage of its $40,000 goal to be donated on Colorado Gives Day will go a long way, Zwanzig added.

Family Tree’s programs and services help individuals, families and communities overcome and end child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness. It runs one homeless shelter in Arapahoe County that serves all of the Denver-metro area and operates

Apex launches updates to system, logo, website Improvements are meant to streamline services for customers

The 122,090 people who live in the Apex Park and Recreation District can expect several changes next week, including a new registration platform, an updated website and logo, and an additional activity guide each year.

The new registration system launches Dec. 4, and the activity guide will go into the mail that week, too.

“We have a lot of change coming, but we are ready and so excited about the new Apex,” said Lauri Dannemiller, executive director of Apex Park and Recreation District. “We’ve spent years planning in an effort to enhance the customer experience at the Apex Park and Recreation District.”

Apex encompasses northeastern Jefferson County from approximately 52nd Avenue to the south, Highway 93 to the west, Sheridan Boulevard to the east, and the Boulder/Broomfield county line to the north. Founded in 1956, the Apex district supports adult fitness and kids health by providing fitness and activity facilities and instruction.

The new software allows the district to make a full schedule of activities available online and for participants to synchronize them to their calendar.

It also provides pre-registration for drop-in classes and an improved web portal with a search function.

After 17 years with its existing website provider, Apex leadership decided it was time to take the next steps to build a new system.

The improvements are part of the annual capital maintenance around the district.

“As part of our longterm planning we knew we needed an updated registration system to improve our customers’ experience,” said Katie Groke Ellis, marketing, community outreach and communications director for Apex. “Through extensive research and several years of planning, we selected MaxGalaxy as the provider

Because the project came in under budget, the district was able to move more quickly on two other projects that were on its longterm improvements plan — a refreshed logo and website.

The changes were paid for from Apex’s capital maintenance budget, which contains a certain amount of money each year for capital improvements on buildings and systems.

The evolving needs and expectations of the district were the drivers for the changes, but Groke Ellis said each change had its own reasoning.

“The registration system change was long in the works, with extensive

West Chamber celebrates women leaders Nine women honored by peers and residents

Jefferson County leaders gathered to honor nine of their peers who have worked passionately in a variety of fields to make Jefferson County a better place at the West Chamber’s 16th annual Celebrate Women of Jefferson County.

The chamber inducted Mary Ann Barwick, Mary Anne Fleet, Julia HillNichols, Joyce Jay, Tracy Kraft-Tharp, Cherri Parks, Jennifer Ryan, Kami Welch and Christine White on Nov. 17 in a breakfast at Denver Marriott West.

“Women in Jefferson County make such outstanding contributions to our county,” said Pam Bales, chamber president and CEO. “Their commitment to work, charity, and to making a difference, is remarkable.”

who have a different life than mine.

And different doesn’t mean worse. In this day and age, it’s amazing to see people who are willing to assist others and get out of their comfort zone.”

Mary Anne Fleet Who she is: Fleet received her bachelor’s degree in music education from Temple University in Pennsylvania, where she studied bassoon with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

She worked as develop- Fleet ment director for Hear Now and as executive director for Caring Connection. She has been a member of the bassoon section of the Lakewood Symphony for the past 21 years, and in 2010 she became the symphony’s first executive director. She has guided the orchestra into becoming a major component of Lakewood’s performing arts community.

She also maintains an active woodwind teaching studio at Music and Arts in Littleton. She has been a president of the South Lakewood Business Association, is a member of and past president of the Rotary Club of Lakewood and is a member of All Comforting Things, which provides hand-crafted items to people in need.

Rosier hopes to leave ‘good legacy’ as he moves on County GOP to appoint new commissioner when resignation takes effect

Jefferson County Commissioner Donald Rosier believes it is important for individuals to be engaged with the community in which they live.

So even after he assumes his role as general manager of the Sterling Ranch Community Authority Board and leaves his Jeffco post, Rosier will continue to be involved.

He will stay in his Littleton-area home in south Jefferson County, and he will continue to coach lacrosse, teach Sunday school and volunteer on community efforts such as park building.

But Rosier, 51, is looking forward to his new professional venture.

“It’s going to be brand-new — a learning experience,” Rosier said. “It will be a great opportunity for me to use both my experience in government and as a professional engineer.”

Rosier, a Republican, was elected to the county commissioner seat in 2010 when he ran against incumbent Kathy Hartman, a Democrat. He was re-elected to serve an additional four years in 2014, defeating Democrat John Flerlage and independent candidate

Greg Standley. He would have been term-limited next year.

Rosier represents District 3 — the southern part of Jefferson County.

Sterling Ranch is a 3,400-acre community under construction in northwest Douglas County. At completion in 20 years, it is expected to have 33,000 people and 12,000 homes. The Sterling Ranch Community Authority Board offered Rosier the position in early November, and Rosier gave notice in mid-November of his intent to vacate the Jeffco commissioner seat.

Rosier said said his formal resignation will occur after the Sterling Ranch Community Authority Board officially appoints him to the position. He expects that to happen by the first part of December, with another person taking over the county commissioner role in January.

The Vacancy Committee of the Jefferson County Republican Party will choose someone to fill the seat.

The committee has set a deadline of 6 p.m. Dec. 12 for applicants to submit applications, said Steve Dorman, vicechairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party.

“From the received applications,” he said, “we will select best qualified people for face-to-face interviews.”

The vacancy committee hopes to have somebody named before Rosier’s official departure date, Dorman said.

That person will serve the county alongside Republican Libby Szabo, who is chair of the Board of County

It invests heavily in renewable energy and brings Colorado on track to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The plan proposes retiring two coal plants in Pueblo and replacing them with wind and solar. Although 90 Pueblo coal plant workers would need to be retrained, the renewable energy industry in Colorado employees 62,000 workers today and could surely employ 90 more. Under this plan, our power

bills will stay the same or even decrease. This is clearly a win-win, since we are getting cheaper energy, higher employment and fighting climate change.

Xcel needs 2/3 of the PUC commissioners to vote in favor of the the plan in order to move forward. I’m hopeful these commissioners will do the right thing and approve Xcel’s plan.

On to the next big adventure, friend

mitty looked over his shoulder as he was carried away, and said, “Where am I going now, Dad?” I said, “I’ve heard it’s a very big adventure.”

I knew why he was asking that question: Before we made eye contact at the MaxFund Animal Adoption Center in 2008, he was frequently moved from place to place and person to person.

And for the first three months, QUIET he spent as much time at the Doggie Dude Ranch in Watkins as he DESPERATION did with me, because my father and mother decided they wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the looking glass.

So I went back and forth to Michigan — for their funerals and then to settle their estates.

That summer, I reintroduced myself to Smitty, a smooth-coated, red dachshund, and we became best Craig Marshall friends.

I have written about him for years, Smith so I won’t go into his attributes all over again. Whenever Smitty is mentioned, I receive more messages than for anything else I write about.

I wanted to let you know I am working on a novella about Smitty.

(I got serious about this, and took an online novel writing class through the UCLA Extension School.)

There are cute and clever books about dogs all over the place. Mine won’t be either. At least it won’t be cute.

Smitty never sat on the top of his doghouse and philosophized.

dealt with a couple of crushing disappointments — things that she wanted very badly, and actually put a lot of time and effort into, have just not gone her way. And, as a parent, it’s really hard to know just how to help our kids process that stuff. To a kid, the old “in the big picture” thing doesn’t really mean that much. It’s all big in their world. But, once she goes through her visceral reaction, nothing stops her from getting up the next day, squaring her shoulders to the world, and facing it head-on.

And I am SO THANKFUL for that spiritual resilience, I can barely express it.

Do people change?

The case of Roy Moore brings to our attention a much bigger problem and puzzle for humanity. Do people change? Repent?

Are you the same person now you were 30 or 40 years ago? If we assume people do not change, why bother with prison or rehabilitation. We must believe people can change, or there would be no need for prison, rehab or the like.

At this point we do not know if Mr. Moore is guilty or innocent, or perhaps it’s mixed bag of truth and untruth. Even if someone was guilty of something many years ago, and has since changed and lead an exemplary life, or after paying a price in prison or rehab, do we continue to hold this against

them? In the case of Bill Clinton and others I have seen no remorse or change of character, so why do so many people want to forgive him and not Moore, who apparently has no transgressions in the last 30 years, if at all? Are the Democrats now going to find an excuse for Al Frankin and others? Why are we not seeing a consistency of thought? Why are we seeing so much pre-judgement?

None of us are the person we were 40 years ago. The world was a different place back then. Do you want to continue to be judged for something stupid done when much younger? I think not. That does not make those things right, but hopefully people can change. However, if you are among the people who have not changed their ways, we do not forgive you.

As a teacher, who has literally dealt with thousands of students over the years, I am shockingly aware of how easy it is to say one stupid thing, or allow one bad facial expression to find its way out, or, even, sometimes, how I just don’t see what a kid needs me to see. And all you have to do is watch 10 minutes of the 5 o’clock news to see three new stories of the horrors we visit

upon our children.

Fortunately for all of us, children are resilient. Children prove time and time again that they have an amazing ability to overcome a lot of what we adults do to them.

So this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for children — both mine and yours — and the superpower that they possess to take what we do to them keep moving forward. They give me hope.

Dr. Eldon L. Laidig Dr. Eldon L. Laidig passed away on Nov.18 at his home in Arvada. He was born and raised in Oberlin, Kansas. He is survived by his wife Lynn, son Larry Laidig, and his sister Ruth Smith. He was pre-deceased by wives, Mary Jane Urban, Lois Cameron, and Gayle Middleton.

He has ten step-children, and 13 grandchildren.

After graduating from Ft. Hayes College in 1954, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the Reserves for 27 years. He attended the University of Texas, earning a master’s degree and a PhD. He moved to Colorado and worked for Jefferson County Public Schools for 27 years, 25 of which were spent as a middle school principal. In 1990 he became an associate with Personal Benefit Services where he served as a Certified Financial Planner for another 27 years.

Dr. Laidig’s involvement in the Arvada community is unparalleled. As an active civic leader, he promoted the Arvada Center, the Arvada Historical Society, the Arvada Council for the Arts and Humanities, Sister Cities, Arvada Vitality Alliance, Friendship Force of Greater Denver, and Friendship Force International. He supported and volunteered for numerous non-profits

including Bessie’s Hope and the Colorado Cowboy Gathering.

His avocations were gardening, travelling and reading.

An active Rotarian, he served on the Board of Directors and as president of the Arvada Chapter. He was honored as the Arvada Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1990, and PBS was voted Business of the Year in 2007. He also received the West Chamber’s 2016 Jefferson County Hall of Fame Award. Following this honor, Dr. Laidig’s five decades of accomplishments were entered into the Congressional Record of the 114th U.S. Congress

by Representative Ed Perlmutter.

Dr. Laidig also recently received the prestigious Pioneer Award from the Arvada Chamber, and was listed in the 2004 Arvada Sentinal’s “Arvada Profiles” publication called Stories of the People Who Most Influenced Our First 100 Years.

Dr. Laidig was a member of Arvada Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. A Witness to the Resurrection service was held at his church on Nov. 27th.

He never rescued anyone. Except me.

He came along after I retired and before Jennifer. It was a sketchy time in my life.

I guess I was meant to have it: Single men who retire often head south, for a number of reasons.

I was heading in that direction, and then a friend sent a photograph of Smitty she had seen on MaxFund’s web site.

I called to find out if Smitty was still available.

“Let me go see.”

A woman put the phone down, and walked away. I could hear her footsteps. Then I could hear her coming back.

“He’s here.”

His name wasn’t Smitty at the time. I thought he needed a new one, to go with his new life.

Displayed near me right now is my father’s World War II flight jacket. In script, on the front right side, it says “Smitty.”

Later on, I called him every name imagin-

able — names of endearment — even after he was completely deaf.

Is your dog, like mine, a good excuse to stay home?

Would you rather meet the Gundersons for lunch, or stay at home with your dog and watch Hitchcock?

I never put a hat on Smitty. People do things like that, I’ve heard. Dress up their dogs like dolls.

People make jokes about dachshunds all the time, but my friends know better than to try that around me. I make an exception when it comes to cartoonist Gary Larson.

“Give me a hand here, Etta. I got into a nest of wiener dogs over on Fifth and Maple.”

When he was younger, Smitty crawled into sweatshirt sleeves, and fell asleep. Later on, he could sleep anywhere at any time, and napping became one of our favorite things to do together.

If I said, “Let’s nap,” he just looked at me — and smiled.

A few days ago, Smitty went on life’s final big adventure.

According to records on the Colorado secretary of state’s website, two people have registered to run for the seat in November. They are Lesley Dahlkemper, a Democrat who served four years on the Jefferson County Board of Education, and Tina Francone, a Republican who is the Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) director for District N, which includes Jefferson County.

Dahlkemper does not believe Rosier’s resignation will affect her race at all, and his decision to step down had nothing to do with her decision to run, she said.

Dahlkemper announced her run for the seat in early September and has “hit the ground running,” she said. She has already been out talking with voters and meeting one-on-one with residents.

Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Faye Griffin served as county commissioner for six years of the

two four-year terms that she was elected for the seat. She left the county commissioner seat early to run for the clerk and recorder position — a role had previously held from 1999 to 2006.

“I wanted to continue serving Jeffco citizens, and due to the timing of the terms, it was the right decision,” Griffin said. “I grew up in the Clerk and Recorder Department where I was a staff member long before I was an elected official. This department is my true joy. I love serving Jeffco citizens is this capacity.”

Griffin, a Republican, was elected in November 2014 to serve a four-year term that began in January 2015.

Since Rosier is term limited, Griffin said she wasn’t sure if leaving the commissioner seat early would affect the election.

“What I do know,” Griffin said, “is that the county will be losing a great leader. His experience, dedication, commitment and enthusiasm will be missed.”

‘Hopefully, I left a good legacy’ Rosier is a fifth-generation Coloradoan who grew up in Arvada. He and his wife, GeriAnn, have lived in the south Jefferson County area since 1992 and raised three children there.

Rosier worked in the private sector as a professional engineer for 25 years. Before becoming a county commissioner, Rosier chaired the Community Development Advisory Board for eight years.

During his time as a county commissioner, he has served on 15 different boards and coalitions in various capacities. His committee assignments will be filled by whoever replaces him.

When citing some of his accomplishments as a county commissioner, Rosier notes his work on economic development, his fiscal management during a recession, his tenure with the Jefferson Parkway and being a part of the formation of the WestConnect Coalition.

He will miss being a part of the important discussions and policy-making that affect Jefferson County, he said. He admitted he would have liked to have served the county longer, and is considering serving on a community-related board or commission in Jeffco.

Being a county commissioner has required more dedication and hard work than any other job he’s had, Rosier said.

“But it’s been great,” he said. “Hopefully, I left a good legacy here in Jefferson County.”

When it comes to holiday shopping, chain stores and online outlets will try to pull in customers with quantity of items and deals.

But to find that unique gift — one specially and limitedly created by local artisans, bakers and craftsman — you have to look locally. And that’s where the multitude of holiday markets in communities around the Denver metro area come in.

“We’re a place where you can shop and savor the season,” said Natalia Wobst, executive director of the Colorado Chamber of the German American Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the annual Christkindl Market in Denver’s Skyline Park. “There’s a real feeling of community effort at this market, and vendors really get to know the customers. And customers know we’re a reliable place for good Christmas finds.”

There are dozens of markets to choose from heading into the holiday season, so we picked a handful from our coverage areas to highlight.

Adams County Holiday Bazaar WHERE: Adams County Fairgrounds, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton HOURS: Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 a.m. to

4 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The bazaar features more than 300 booths in two buildings, all focused on handmade crafts. Corporate vendors and homebased franchises are not allowed.

The event also doubles as a benefit fundraiser for the Adams County Historical Society and Museum.

WHAT MAKES THE MARKET SPECIAL: “What makes a good market is new inventory and a variety of merchandise, and our vendors are personable and lovely to talk with,” said Marilyn Fingerlin, one of three co-organizers of the Adams County Historical Society bazaars. “They are always looking for new crafts to make to sell, and you will find quality handcrafted items for your home and all-occasion gifts.”

WHAT YOU’LL FIND: The guild is composed of people who are students or former students in Arapahoe Community College’s ceramics program.

Items on sale include functional and decorative pieces made by all skill levels. There are limited amounts of each piece, which means shoppers will see a rotating stock of new pieces, said Melanie Unruh, the guild’s vice president.

he way Denver musician Barry Shapiro sees it, people don’t find themselves in Colorado by accident.

“Denver is the kind of place where people move here because they want to be here,” he said. “Denver draws people here for the right reason, and that openness extends to the music scene as well.”

Shapiro knows what he’s talking about — he was born in Brooklyn, and lived in Boston before coming to Colorado 27 years ago, when he was 18. He was inspired to start in music thanks to the inspiration of his mother and grandmother, who played piano. In high school, he got inspired by the work of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Shapiro recorded his full-length debut album called “In Remission “ in 2000 about the healing power of music, followed it up in 2005 with “Beacon Street,” inspired by life in New England, and his most recent release is called “Boardwalk Rain.” His music is largely inspired by places he visits, and that includes Colorado.

“The Colorado music scene is a scene of nooks and crannies, and great little rooms that people don’t know about, and those are some of my favorite rooms to play,” Shapiro said. “My favorite thing about playing is when my creativity inspires somebody else to create something else.”

Author thrills readers with visit to Denver Dan Brown promotes most recent thriller at gathering in DTC

More than 1,000 excited readers arrived at the Denver Marriott Tech Center on Nov. 15 for “An Evening with Dan Brown,” jointly presented by Douglas County Libraries and Tattered Cover Book Store. Despite publication of millions of his books in multiple languages (more than 52 million), the mild-mannered Brown reminds one of his globe-trotting college-professor/ protagonist, Robert Langdon — bright, articulate, humorous — and certainly confident, but not ostentatious at all ... This is a guy one would love to chat with over coffee or a beer.

only a ticket, but a shiny blue copy of the new book, which will require some late nights of reading as Langdon travels in and out of trouble — mostly in Spain this trip. (He commented that the cover design is inspired by his experience looking down from the top of a steep spiral staircase at the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona — Antonio Gaudi’s Brown ongoing masterpiece.)

Brown is touring to introduce his latest thriller, published in October — “Origin” — and his publicists have provided a preliminary short background film that allowed this highly imaginative author to quickly get to the story at hand when he bounds to the platform. Like previous books, it deals with his ongoing interest in the juxtaposition of science and religion in our world today: “Will God survive science? Where did we come from?

Where are we going?”

Research for “Origin” began with a visit to the famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, designed by Frank Gehry — Brown wished to be brought somewhat up to speed on modern art, which was not familiar territory.

And that’s where “Origin” begins its convoluted tale. “It was fun to throw Langdon into that scene,” he said with a grin.

Brown is the son of a math teacher and a devout church organist and was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Amherst College and the University of Seville. He said he published his first book at age 5, dictated to his father and “tied together with red string: `Giraffe, Pig and Pants on Fire.’”

He recalled asking a priest which creation story is true and being told, “Nice boys don’t ask!” He graduated from Amherst College and taught at his alma mater until he could devote his attention to writing. He gets up at 4 a.m., faced with an empty page and

produces yet another exciting chapter.

But, when asked “What’s next?” he gently reminded the questioner that “Origin” has just been out three weeks. “You’re a mother, aren’t you?

What if someone talked about the next baby three weeks after you’d given birth?” Asia, Africa and Latin America would all like to be settings for a Langdon visit — Brown said he’d spent time in India, but wasn’t yet familiar enough “because it’s not in my tradition. Would you be interested in setting big questions in the developing world?”

Several questions about his personal beliefs were parried. He sees “The Divine in interactions of people — I sense in moments like this love between you and me …” With a strong mother and a strong wife, he would never write about a “woman tied to the railroad tracks,” he added.

One participant probably spoke for all present: “Thank you for making us think!” she said.

Soon, Tchaikovsky’s beloved music will be playing wherever one goes, and dancers—both professional and younger — will become snowflakes, Clara, party guests, military mice, princes and that Sugar Plum Fairy.

Dancers in the Littleton Youth Ballet will present their annual production of “The Nutcracker” on Dec. 1-3 in the beautifully renovated Joanna Ramsey Theatre at Westminster High School.

(Ramsey was Littleton Youth Ballet director Allison Jaramillo’s teacher in high school, we are told.)

The company had long performed at the Loretto Heights Theatre, and with the sale of that property, it was not available this year. By the time Jaramillo and her co-director/mother, Bobbie Jaramillo learned about Loretto Heights’ unavailability, finding another stage that offered adequate fly space for set pieces was difficult — some book three years ahead.

A friend had a suggestion and Allison is most pleased with the comfort and sound qualities in the Ramsey Theatre, she writes — and invites Littleton audiences to experience it, hoping they will “fall in love with it,” as the Jaramillos did.

The production features two casts of over 170: children, pre-professional dancers in the Littleton Youth Ballet and guest artists, as well as lovely sets and costumes that suggest Littleton in the early 1900s.

Academy dancers progress to more complex parts each year as their skills increase: first wee mice and angels, then clowns and candy canes, then snowflakes and flowers and finally leading roles … Some dancers in this year’s program have performed since Littleton Ballet started presenting “The Nutcracker.” Each year features some subtle changes in choreography,

Other details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language. Most participants are homebound women and small children, adults who are disabled, and senior citizens. Many are not literate in their first language, and remain isolated from American culture.

McHenry is head strength coach and physical education teacher at Castle View High School. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association Board of Directors and co-chair of the NSCA Secondary School Coaches Working Group.

He isn’t a technology expert but admits some weight training Jim Benton methods are outdated and progress is being made to change those old-fashioned training procedures. It has taken time to convince trainers that overwork can cause injuries.

Integrated and not isolated training is the new way of training.

“Integrated means you are going to add components in,” explained McHenry. “Now we are isolated. Kids grow up and play one sport, never learning to move in other patterns.

“To help avoid getting knee injuries, one of the first things we look at is if they are squatting properly. Sometimes when a person hurts their ACL, it’s t because they have weak glutes which are causing t a their legs to move wrong. It’s often a non-contact s injury.”

Growth spurts in teenagers should not be ignored.s e “I must pay close attention to whether they are getting taller because growing adds something to e the mix,” said McHenry. “A freshman may come into the high school at 5-foot-5. Then he starts grow- t n ing, which changes his center of gravity. He may have to back off the weights and re-learn the move- s ment patterns.”

McHenry still endorses strength training.

“Strength training is safe, but it’s important that it’s taught by someone who understands pediatric and adolescent exercise physiology,” he said.

“That’s a relatively new science.”

Specific sport training where athletes focus on individualized weight training and specific approach is helpful.

“With cross country, for example, I’ll work on stabilizing muscles so they can perform better later in the race,” added McHenry. “Golfers tend to do all their rotations on one side, so I help them work both sides equally.

“Tennis players have to be explosive. I help them work on that. Cheerleading is a sport with a notoriously high number of injuries. Can the base people handle the pressure of catching someone thrown high in the air? They may need the weight room more than most.

“The sport coach can be focused on strategy while the strength coach is focused on strength, recovery and nutrition. It frees up sport coaches to do their sport.”

McHenry, who has been at Castle View for 11 years, also has thoughts on burnout and creating well-rounded athletes.

AURORA — Pomona is heading back to familiar territory.

The No. 4-seeded Panthers defeated No. 8 Grandview 42-20 on Nov. 25 at Legacy Stadium in the Class 5A football state semifinal. The victory punched Pomona’s ticket to a third straight trip to the championship game.

“With them (Grandview) just beating No. 1 Valor we knew they would come out firing,” said Pomona senior running back Max Borghi, who had 18 carries for 211 yards and three touchdowns (46, 19 and 56 yards) in the semifinal victory. “We did our jobs. We executed to get those big plays offensively and defensively.”

Pomona faces undefeated Eaglecrest in the title game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Mile High Stadium. The Raptors (13-0 record) defeated Columbine in a 32-31 double-overtime game in the first 5A semifinal played at Legacy Stadium on Saturday.

“Eaglecrest is tough up front,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said looking ahead to the Raptors.

“They showed that against Columbine. We are excited, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Pomona has one football state championship title in the school’s trophy case. The Panthers defeated Montbello 24-21 in the 4A title game in 1988. While that win was decades ago, Pomona has plenty of recent championship game experience.

Pomona were the 5A state runner-up the previous two seasons to Valor Christian.

The Panthers (11-2) enter the title game this year with an 8-game winning streak.

“I can’t tell you how much fire I have in my chest and our whole team,” Borghi said of Pomona getting another chance at that elusive 5A state championship trophy.

junior Colten Muller for a 98-yard touchdown catch and run to give Pomona a 14-0 lead with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

“We are all playmakers,” said Marquez, who also gave a ton of credit to the Panthers’ offensive line to help Pomona put up 42 points on Grandview. “Colten and David made those plays tonight.”

Muller actually was Pomona’s quarterback for four games after Marquez broke his left arm. Marquez suffered the break in his nonthrowing arm in Pomona’s conference opener Oct. 7.

Marquez returned for the playoffs and has been impressive. The senior was 19-for-29 for 549 yards and eight touchdowns through the air in blowout wins over Poudre and Fairview leading up to the semifinals. The three-year starting quarterback was 9-for-15 for 295 yards and the two touchdown passes against the Wolves.

“That is the kind of offense we have right now,” Madden said of the two big pass plays that went the distance in the first quarter. “We are an explosive team and we try to get our guys in space. I think our offensive line was the key tonight.”

The offensive line provided plenty of running room for Borghi. His 46-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter pushed the lead to 21-0. Borghi had another pair of touchdown runs called back because of penalties.

“Overall, this was one of our best games of the season,” said Borghi, who is nearly the 1,500-yard mark on the ground this season and averag-

ing more than 10 yards per carry. “I feel like I had one of the best games I’ve ever had tonight.”

Borghi — a Washington State commit — tore his ACL in the state quarterfinals last season. The electric playmaker is making the most of his final prep postseason. Borghi had 30 carries for 427 yards and six touchdowns in wins over Poudre and Fairview.

Grandview did prevent getting shut out in the first half with a big run by senior quarterback Kyle Smith of 49 yards. Junior Jordan Billingsley scored on a short touchdown run to bring the score to 21-7 at halftime.

Billingsley ended with all three of the Wolves touchdowns. The stellar junior tailback finished the season with more than 1,800 yards on the ground and 21 touchdowns.

However, Saturday night belonged

to the Panthers, who didn’t let up in the second half. Borghi scored on a 19-yard run on the Panthers’ opening drive of the second half to open up a 28-7 lead.

Borghi ran in his third touchdown run with 4:23 left in the third quarter to give Pomona a comfortable 35-7 lead. The icing on the cake for the Panthers was an interception senior Riley Welsch snagged in the fourth quarter and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

“Our offensive line and our defense was great,” Madden said. “With our offensive line and defense growing up and doing that tonight ... that’s what we need to win next week.”

New business that will open during the process will bring the total to about 160 businesses.

Because of the closure, about 3,000 mall employees found themselves without work. To help the unemployed, Jefferson County’s American Job Center, Target and other companies stepped up to provide temporary job options to those in need.

“We have locations in Conifer and Cañon City, which is where we directed a lot of our customers and staff, as well as our artisans,” said Pennie Gaudi, owner of A Borgata, which specializes in products and crafts from local artisans — from candles to clothing and artwork to Colorado-themed gifts.

“Luckily, we have a lot of our artisans who are coming back, and it’s looking like we’ll have more than we did before.”

Thanksgiving gratitude Perkins, the mall’s general manager, called it fitting that the mall reopened during Thanksgiving week. “We’re so grateful for the thousands of people who worked to make this possible.”

Local businesses such as Cleveland Creek Lodge and Log Furniture, located inside the mall, must find time to return and restock during the all-important holiday shopping season. Cleveland Creek moved to the FlatIron Crossing mall in Broomfield while repairs were made.

“Every day we’re not open in the Mills we’re losing money, and it’s been difficult to find time to build furniture and set up shop back there,” said Geoff Cleveland, owner of Cleveland Creek. “We’re going to stay at FlatIron and Colorado Mills, but we don’t have a date when we’ll be back at the Mills.”

Mayor Paul urged shoppers to shop local and support the mall and its tenants as they get back on their feet. On Nov. 21, shoppers were eager to return to a kind of normalcy — and to see how the mall looked after months of closure.
