Colorado Brew Plus and Outdoor Lab partner for Colorado Gives Day Half of custom beer sales to benefit outdoor ed program

Jefferson County is a generous community.

“And when you live in Jefferson County,” said Paige Brophy, executive director of the Outdoor Lab Foundation, “you want to give back in any way you can.”

The Outdoor Lab Foundation is the nonprofit fundraising arm for Outdoor Lab, a weeklong outdoor education program offered to sixth-graders in Jefferson County.

“Outdoor Lab is so much more than just a week on the trails. We like to say it’s a lifetime,” Brophy said. “Students return with a sense of stewardship.”

But not just stewardship of the environment, Brophy added. Students also gain a sense of stewardship of self and of others, she said.

This year, the Outdoor Lab Foundation is partnering with Colorado Brew Plus in Wheat Ridge for Colorado Gives Day, which takes place on Dec. 10. The brewery is making a custom beer and 50% of the proceeds from every beer sold on Colorado Gives Day will go to the Outdoor Lab Foundation.

Much of the staff, including Colorado Brew Plus’s owner Eugene Kahng, have gone through the Outdoor Lab program, Coulter added.

“This is a cool opportunity to give back to a local program that many of us have fond memories of,” Coulter said.

The beer will be a tart cherry milkshake IPA, Coulter said. It’s a play off of a traditional IPA with a focus on aromatics and essential oils versus the bitterness of hops, he said. Colorado Brew Plus is making two barrels of it, which will equal roughly 800 glasses,

He added the goal is to sell as much of it as possible on Colorado Gives Day. Outdoor Lab Foundation’s goal for Colorado Gives Day is to raise $35,000, Brophy said. She added that the foundation’s biggest priority overall is to provide student tuition assistance to ensure that every sixth grader can attend the Outdoor Lab program.

The Outdoor Lab Foundation serves 58 Jefferson County schools, Brophy said. On average, about 6,000 sixth-graders — and about 1,000 high school leaders who serve as counsel-

ors — go through the Outdoor Lab program each year. The program is in its 63rd year. It has two school locations — one is Windy Peak near Conifer and the other is Mount Evans near Evergreen. The foundation formed in 2003.

Kathy Weiss is the former principal of the Mount Evans school, and currently serves as the sites and schools liaison as well as sitting on the foundation’s board.

Weiss said she “has a million stories” that people have told her through the years of the difference that the Outdoor Lab experience made in their lives.

“There are so many people who have attended the program,” Weiss said.

“And as adults when they talk about their careers and successes, they cite that the week at Outdoor Lab helped them become the person they are today.”

Thanksgiving’s Here, and We at Golden Real Estate Are Thankful

Some weeks I struggle to come up with a topic for this column, but not so this week. Let me list some of the ways in which my colleagues, my wife and I are thankful.

First, Rita and I are thankful to be Americans. In school I studied many languages — French, Russian, Latin, Greek, German and Japanese — and I have traveled extensively around the world, although not so much recently. I attended my sister’s wedding in Sweden, attended “citizen diplomacy” conferences in the Soviet Union, and visited Beijing right after the 1989 Tiananmen massacre (and twice since). I still have a favorite jacket I purchased for $15 while touring a silk factory in China in 1994.

I have visited and marveled at Japan and its culture more than once. I visited the Russian port of Vladivostok (the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway) on the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific. I remember noting that pay phones there were free because the 5 kopeck coin was essentially worthless due to inflation, and that most of the cars on the road were righthand drive Toyotas and Nissans purchased used from nearby Japan.

Rita and I particularly like France and Italy and long to return there again soon.

We enjoyed a week in London following a two-week Atlantic crossing on Cunard’s Queen Victoria with stops in Bermuda and the Canary Islands. When and if I retire from real estate, we look

forward to more international travel.

Every trip is great, but we are always happy to be back in America and especially in Colorado. We are, as I said, thankful most of all to be Americans — and Coloradans.

Part of being an American is the opportunity to participate in our free enterprise system. I’ve always been an entrepreneur. I like to say that, except for my stints at the Washington Post and the New York Post, every paycheck I’ve ever received was signed by me. I remember when I first visited the Soviet Union in 1978, that one could be self employed but only the state could have employees. I realized then that the freedom of enterprise was the core freedom I appreciated most.

Nearly every real estate agent is selfemployed, even if they work for a brokerage. I suspect that 95% or more of all Realtors are independent contractors (1099 workers) responsible for their own taxes and expenses (cell phones, computers, software, etc.) and receive no benefits of any kind. The dropout rate among new agents is as high as 90% and those who make it five or more years have demonstrated a fortitude that deserves respect. Not every licensed real estate agent is a Realtor — that is, a member of the Realtor association. Everyone who joins a Realtor brokerage like ours must join the Realtor association and pay Realtor dues, which run about $500 per year.

But there are non-Realtor brokerages such as Trelora, Opendoor and Redefy, where licensees don’t have to pay Realtor dues and don’t have to abide by the Realtor Code of Ethics, so I’m thankful for all those companies which choose to join the Realtor association.

It’s the National Association of Realtors which lobbies not just for our protection as Realtors but also for your property rights. For example, when the Trump administration wanted to dilute the capital gains exemption for home owners ($250,000 single and $500,000 married), it was the National Association of Realtors which lobbied successfully against that change. There are countless other examples I could cite where our Realtor dues have benefited home buyers and sellers and all those non-Realtor licensees, and I consider it our responsibility to support NAR with our dues. So, yes, I am thankful for NAR, even though I gripe about dues increases!

Like everyone in our profession, I have individual clients — buyers and sellers — for whose friendship and patronage I am grateful. You know who you are! You have not only granted me the opportunity to be of service, but you have allowed me to learn new things from every transaction. Perhaps you have introduced me to a new service

provider such as an estate sales company, a roofer or plumber, or just a great new restaurant! As I have said many times, judge us not by our years in the business but by the number of transactions we have completed, because that’s our primary “continuing education” program.

I’m also thankful for my colleagues from other brokerages. Real estate is different from many other professions because of the tradition of “cooperation and compensation” embodied in our shared multi-list service, aka “MLS.” Some people compare us to car salesmen, but consider the following scenario: You go to a Ford dealership and describe what you’re looking for. The salesman realizes that the right vehicle for you is a Chevrolet or Toyota, so he shows you those cars on his computer and then takes you to those dealerships for a test drive, knowing that he can write the purchase contract and get paid for selling you another dealer’s car just as he can get paid for selling a car from his own dealership. That’s how real estate works, made possible by the MLS. Moreover, individual agents will even share their “trade secrets” to agents from other brokerages. I recall once when I made a presentation at a Realtor meeting on how to shoot and edit video tours of listings, happy to have others do videos for their listings, even though video tours are a point of differentiation for us at Golden Real Estate.

So I’m thankful for how the real estate business works and for the many Realtors whom I consider friends, not just competitors. If I’m not the perfect agent for a given buyer or seller, I don’t hesitate to recommend one of them.

Last but definitely not least, I’m thankful for this and other newspapers for publishing this weekly column!

The West Metro Fire Rescue Training Center hosted a competition on Nov. 5 during which four teams of developers competed with their hightech prototypes to improve public safety operations.

One area of focus, said Dereck Orr, a division chief for the Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Division, is how to advance technologies in the future.

“The whole purpose (of the competition) is to generate new technologies and ideas to help public safety’s use of new communications technologies,” Orr said.

The four teams consisted of developers/innovators and providers/manufacturers ranging in numbers from a couple of people to an entire company.

Residents call for city intervention in ‘forgotten part of Arvada’ Meeting scheduled to discuss alleys in disrepair

Getting to the garage isn’t easy for Christie Burton’s tenants, who live in a fourplex on W. 59th Avenue.

The garage sits in the middle of a dirt alley that stretches past more than a dozen buildings, behind each of which sit miscellaneous debris, streetlights that never turn on and “potholes that cars can practically drown in,” Burton said.

Every few weeks, dumped mattresses and other pieces of furniture pile up next to the dumpster behind Burton’s building, further obstructing the alley and leaving Burton to organize removal of the furniture. About 10 such instances have occurred since the beginning of 2019, said the 75-yearold Arvada resident, “and if I move the mattresses, there will be six more tomorrow.”

The neglected alleyway is one of two around the Ralston Valley Garden Apartments.

CASEY VAN DIVIER The more northerly alley, behind Burton’s building, is located between W. 59th Place and W. 59th Avenue. A similar alley is located between W. 59th Avenue and W. 58th Place.

According to city planning manager Rob Smetana, since 1959, the alleys have been private property divided among the building owners. A portion of the southern alley is zoned for public access.

As such, it falls to the residents to maintain the alley.

Through communication with the Arvada Police Department (APD), Burton has received a list of ways the residents can improve their situation, such as creating an HOA to fund maintenance or enlisting residents to take down license plate numbers and report those dumping mattresses on the property.

Attempts to improve But Burton takes issue with such solutions. Namely, with dozens of residents and owners living along the alley, she feels that convincing everyone to get on board for an HOA would be impossible, she said.

Ideally, the city would rezone the alleys and fund repairs, said Mike Fredricey. Fredricey owns a unit in a fourplex on W. 59th Avenue, where his

22-year-old daughter lives.

“I guarantee you won’t see alleyways like this in Five Parks or Candelas. This is a forgotten part of Arvada,” he said. “The idea that the owners are going to be able to clean that alley up is really preposterous. There’s some owners that are not very active, and I don’t think they’d put money forward to repair that alley.”

Ideally, the alleyways would be rezoned, he said, but “I really don’t know the zoning issues behind it. It would be a big financial undertaking (for the city) as well.”

City planning manager Rob Smetana echoed the sentiment, saying the responsibility for the alleys is something “we probably wouldn’t want to take on.”

“We typically don’t have public alleys in the city, except in Olde Town,” he said.

Alternative solution In an effort to help the residents coordinate a plan of their own, the city of Arvada and APD are organizing a community meeting. The date has not yet been set, but all SEE ALLEYS, P7

She pointed to fixes residents have already tried to put in place on their own, such as a neighbor who filled the pothole behind his building with fragments of stone - which, Burton said, shows that rezoning is the only “permanent solution.”

“I really feel part of my job is to protect my tenants and give them a decent place to live,” she said, “and I want the city to be responsible for these alleys.”

New strategies to answer Arvada’s rising crime rate Police presentation highlights DUI enforcement, homeless programs

Officer assaults and motor vehicle thefts are down in Arvada this year, but keeping with statewide trends, crime is on the rise, as shown in the annual State of the Police Department presentation at the Nov. 18 city council meeting.

According to third quarter data presented by the Arvada Police Department (APD), in 2019, Arvada has seen 39% more “person crimes,” those involving the threatening or injuring of a person, than average.

Violent crimes, which encompass murder and assault, have also been on the uptick throughout Colorado. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program, from 2017 to 2018, the violent crime rate per 100,000 people increased about 6.7%; in Arvada that year, the rate increased about Strate 41.2%.

COMPARING CRIME RATES Arvada has the fourth lowest crime rate — calculated based on population and total number of crimes — compared to similarly sized cities in the area, according to data presented to city council by the Arvada Police Department. The five comporable cities with the lowest rates were: #1 Centennial: 19.3 #2 Fort Collins: 24.3 #3 Greeley: 29.5 #4 Arvada: 31.6 #5 Westminster: 35.1 changed in 2018, which partially accounted for the increase, he said.

The property crime rate, including larceny, robbery and burglary rose about 6.1% in Arvada from 2017 to 2018.

Conversely, the property crime rate decreased statewide by about 1.3%.

With the Arvada increases, “there is some temptation when looking at numbers to initially be alarmed,” Arvada Deputy Chief Ed Brady said. He offered other data points to offset that alarm: Out of 11 similarly sized cities in the area, Arvada has the fourth lowest crime rate at 31.6. The rate is calculated by dividing reported crimes by total population, then multiplying the result by 100.

Further, the increase in numbers doesn’t necesarily point to an increase in crime; there has also been a bolstering of the city’s ability to enforce the law, specifically when it comes to DUIs.

Increase in DUI enforcement DUI-related enforcements have gone up in Arvada since July, the first month the department has had two full-time officers dedicated to DUI incidents, Deputy Chief AJ DeAndrea said.

The change in staffing comes at a time when statistics from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation show a decrease in DUI arrests; from 2017 to 2018, the number of DUIs in Colorado dropped by about 2.2%; in Arvada, by about 12%.

But councilmember Bob Fifer said that, in his experience, those driving under the influence on Arvada streets seem to be as prevalent as ever.

“I rarely go out past 9 or 9:30 (p.m.) because of that,” he said. “There’s been many situations where we’ve heard lives have been taken because someone decided to get behind the wheel. We’ve got to make sure our streets are safe.”

From July 1 to Nov. 18, DUI arrests in Arvada had increased by about 25%, DeAndrea said.

“The focus has really assisted in our DUI enforcement and education,” he said.

Making progress The presenters highlighted some other strides the department has made in recent months, with Strate celebrating the fact that the department has filled 12 positions that were vacant in the beginning of 2019, as well as refilled the positions of 11 members who left the department throughout 2019.

The department now has 190 on staff for 187 positions — an “over hire” strategy “to maintain police department staffing models,” he said. “If we were to wait for an opening, recruitment, academy training and field training takes up to a year, so we would never catch up.”

Thirteen of the 190 are in academy training, and 12 just completed training. While in training, recruits are paid at a lower rate than those at the officer level; further, because there were open positions during the beginning of 2019, the department saved some funds then that has allowed it to stay on budget, even with the three extra recruits, Strate said.

The team also emphasized the department’s Community Outreach Resource and Enforcement team, or CORE team, which has been an ongoing APD project to support homeless individuals in Arvada. The team has been reaching out to the homeless and referring them to resources, as well as enforcing restrictions when necessary.

The department is working now on developing ways to measure the success of the program, including by tracking the number of referrals utilized by individuals, Strate said.

He also stressed that the team doesn’t only work in Olde Town, but in Arvada parks and trails.

“Most people don’t realize the homeless encampments throughout the city,” he said. “We want to make sure we get them out of those conditions.”

keep things. I frame things, I hang things on hooks and doorknobs, I collect things in mugs and baskets and wooden boxes. I shove things into drawers marked “important stuff.”

I keep things in physical files and electronic folders. I surround myself with things in every room of my home.

I’m thankful for my things.

In this age of Marie Kondo and Marsha Ramsland, and of divesting, diminishing and de-cluttering, the value of “things” has taken a beating.

I LETTER TO THE EDITOR Hidden ingredients in lunch debate An old Wendy’s commercial from the 19080s featured a woman eating a sandwich and crying out, “Where’s the beef ?” In its story headlined “District data highlights needful longer lunch times,” this newspaper gives readers a story without the meat.

The story presents the school district’s meticulous calculation of the amount of time elementary, middle and high school students have for lunch. The story omits any meticulous calculation of what costs might be associated with longer lunch times.

And, since the district does not do anything without bowing to the teachers’ union...I expect the union would be screaming for

Good advice … but so much of my stuff, so many of my things speak to my heart and spark my joy. The vintage book table I bought for $10 at a Goodwill store for my first college apartment. The assortment of pins and buttons I’ve persuaded the people wearing them to give to me. The art I’ve acquired from my various adventures around the world.

I collect sunglasses and key chains and pencils with whistles and snow globes and mini-fans on top of them. I collect comic strips and inspirational quotes and books and books and books.

And then there are the things, as Mr. Rogers says, that remind us of people.

If more students eating a school lunch creates a bigger problem getting them fed in the allotted time, perhaps it’s better to be content with the number of students currently eating school lunches. As a taxpayer, it’s fine with me if more students bring a sack lunch to school.

Finding thankfulness in the struggle

I know. Big surprise for everybody who knows me.

Anyway, this friend of mine is having a difficult time right now HITTING in his life. Or, to be more specific, in his marriage.

HOME That’s nothing new or unique. Marriage is hard. I have a theory that most people, truth be told, have a difficult time living with themselves.

I mean, honestly, how many times do you look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and say “nailed it!” I don’t Michael Alcorn think that happens all that often for most people. I think most people look at themselves in the mirror at the end of the day and say some variant of “I’ll do better tomorrow.”

So, if we each have such a hard time living with ourselves on a daily basis, how much harder is it to live with another person on a daily basis? To have all your hopes and expectations tied up with another person? Marriage is hard.

Anyway, so this friend is really at a place where he’s struggling. And, the last time I talked to him about this, I really only had one piece of advice for him: imagine everything you love . . . without your wife.

He has two kids who are accomplished and that he’s very proud of. Without his wife? Nope. He lives in a beautiful house with an incredible view. Without his wife?

Nope. He has a ridiculously large collec-

tion of very cool toys. Without his wife?

Well, maybe. Maybe even more so. Perhaps we should ask his wife how she feels about the toys.

But, my point is this: all of the great things in life tend to be the result of struggles. Of battles won, or, at least, survived. And the point is this: what they have built, they have built *together* — the good, the great, the hard — all of it has come together. And, so, it’s important to be loyal to that struggle, because without the struggle, most of what is truly valuable doesn’t come to exist.

We’ve already started in on another really ugly election season — aren’t they all? This, at the end of a three-year span in which all of our politics became degraded and cheap. But, you know what? We just went through a significant realignment of power in this country . . . without violence, without death, without destruction. Sure, there was plenty of corruption and graft, but that’s to be expected in a human institution. We are still able to have a complete revolution every two years in this country without violence. The struggle is worth the blessings of freedom.

I know this is the week of Thanksgiving, in which we all contemplate all of the blessings in our lives. But, this week, in a bit of counter-programming, I would encourage you to embrace and, yes, be Thankful, for all of the hard. All of the struggle.

All of the difficult.

And, maybe, just maybe, it would be nice

Marijuana impairs driving. It affects skills required for safe driving — alertness, concentration, coordination, and reaction time, judging distance, and reaction to signs. It’s not safe to drive high or to ride with someone using. High school seniors who use marijuana are twice as likely to receive a traffic ticket and 65% more likely to get into an accident.

Marijuana potency, measured by the percentage of THC found in confiscated samples, has risen from an average of 3.8% in the 90’s to more than 50% to 80% and greater THC content today. For every tax dollar taken in, taxpayers spend $4.50 on consequences.

occur in the body when substances, like THC are introduced. It can affect decision making, concentration, and memory for days after use, especially in people who use marijuana regularly.

Some impacts include: Reduced school performance. Students who use marijuana tend to get lower grades and are more likely to drop out of school than non- using peers.

Usage affects attention, memory, and learning lasting for days or weeks. Children who start young are 4-7 times more likely to develop dependency. They are significantly less likely than non-using peers to finish high school or a degree.

Research suggests that people who use marijuana regularly for a long time are less satisfied with their lives and have more problems with friends and family compared to people who do not use marijuana.

T Daylight-saving time shift, dwindling sunlight put mind, body though changes

bout one in every three American adults already doesn’t get enough sleep, and the end of daylight-saving time can throw another wrench into the equation — even though the day “gains” an hour in the fall rather than losing one toward the spring.

“Either way, biologically, you’re changing your circadian rhythm, the biological clock we live by,” said Danielle Hicks, a psychology instructor at Front Range Community College in Westminster.

The ensuing sleep disruption can come with a host of hurdles: mood problems, struggles with focusing, less precise control of movements and, of course, throwing off the sleep-wake cycle.

People also may be more emotional or may not receive information as well as usual, Hicks said.

“It feels as if you’re jetlagged,” Hicks said. “I would ask yourself, if you’re jet-lagged, are you going to work on heavy machinery? Are you going to lead a major meeting? Are you going to make major decisions?”

Daylight-saving time ended in the wee morning hours Nov. 3, but the days are still approaching the “shortest day of the year” in late December — when

daytime is shortest and night is longest — at the winter solstice, marking the start of that season.

That’s important for sleep because when the day gets dim, the body increases its amount of a hormone called melatonin, which helps induce sleep. After the fall time change, light in the morning — earlier than the biological clock expects it — can put a damper on that extra hour of sleep because it reduces melatonin, according to Hicks.

But the natural change in light as seasons change is more subtle than the human-made daylight-saving time, said Kristy Dykema, a psychology professor at Front Range.

“Daylight-saving time, that’s a more acute shift. Smaller, but more drastic in terms of how much time we have to prepare for it and adjust to it,” Dykema said.

Deeper effects As some adjust to the time change, they may not be out of

the woods just yet. They may still be feeling the effects of seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression.

“For people (for) whom the adjustment in the first couple weeks is not sufficient to alleviate the symptoms, the symptoms can continue to be a challenge as the sunlight continues to decrease,” said Allison Hagood, a psychology professor at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton.

The disorder can include loss of interest in things a person used to enjoy, boredom, apathy and sadness, according to Hagood. Feeling sluggish, social withdrawal and even having thoughts of death or suicide also could be symptoms.

“People who don’t have a diagnosis can experience those symptoms to a lesser extent,” Hagood said. “Not across the board, but there is an increased likelihood. Most people who SEE FALLING, P21

he term “Scrooge” has come to describe one who is miserly, cheap and uncaring, but that’s not who Ebenezer Scrooge really is, according to actor Larry Cahn. And he should know — he’s taking on the role.

“Who Scrooge is is who you see at the end, not COMING the beginning,” ATTRACTIONS Cahn said. “Who he is when we first see him is an aberration, a bitter, lonely old soul that has experienced loss after loss.”

Cahn is bringing his take on the character Clarke Reader to the Arvada Center’s stage in “A Christmas Carol — The Musical.” The show runs at the center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through Dec. 22., at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Broadway musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic story features a score by legend Alan Menken and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. All the well-known characters make an appearance in the show: Bob Cratchit (Aaron Vega), Jacob Marley (Wayne Kennedy), the Ghost of Christmas Past (Megan Van De Hey), and of course, the effervescent Tiny Tim (Kieran O’Brien).

“Tiny Tim is the kid everyone loves because he’s the nicest character on earth, and is never really sad,” explained the 9-year-old O’Brien. “Tim is open to everything and blocks out the bad.”

Directed by Gavin Mayer, Cahn describes the show as “being shot out of a cannon and going through every aspect of show business” — tap, ballet, song and dance numbers, comedy and even a little bit of horror. But throughout the different styles, the themes remain true throughout the show — forgiveness and family.

hile indicators point to a strong economy with unemployment rates low and spending high, local experts warn that 2019 might be the year to exercise caution in holiday spending.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) expects holiday retail sales during November and December to increase between 3.8 percent and 4.2 percent from last year. Spending is expected to be between $727.9 billion and $730.7 billion.

According to the NRF, the average Ameri-

can will spend $700 on gifts in 2019, totaling more than $465 billion nationally.

However, local economist Meredith Moon, of the state’s Legislative Council, said despite national predictions, it is possible that retail sales decline slightly this holiday season, citing trade tensions with China as a factor to consider in consumer confidence.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report for September 2019 was just published, and U.S. retail sales decreased 0.3 percent in September monthover-month.

“This this is the first month retail sales

have fallen since February,” Moon said.

“However, this data is subject to revisions that may reverse this fall in sales. The tariffs scheduled to go into effect on Dec.15, which cover mainly consumer goods, should not significantly affect holiday shopping prices, since retailers typically increase their inventories months in advance of the holiday season.”

Some advice for sending holiday greetings

It’s that holiday-card time of year again.

But before you open up the address book or spreadsheet, read up on some modern etiquette for addressing those to whom you’re sending your jolly good tidings.

Holiday cards, particularly Christmas cards, are big business. Leading greeting-card maker Hallmark estimates 1.3 billion Christmas cards are sent annually in the United States.

Every holiday season, I receive a handful of cards addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Mark Peacock’’ — my husband’s name. And every year I’m flummoxed that some in our circle haven’t noticed that Mark and I have never shared a last name.

Eighteen years into her marriage, Karen Greco, a publicist and writer who lives in Rhode Island and New York City, says friends and family are finally starting to use her surname.

“I just kept using my own name when sending thank you cards or other correspondence,’’ she says.

“Sometimes I made a point to say, `I kept my name,’ like, to my dad.’’

Are they married with separate or hyphenated names? Was a new, blended name created? Do their children have different surnames?

“If you ever have a question, just send the person a text or email and ask,” says Jodi R.R. Smith, owner of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting in Marblehead, Massachusetts. “You should know if a name is hyphenated, and which name comes first, which comes second.’’

You can use a less formal approach by writing one family member’s last name, usually the person you know best, and addressing the card to the “family’’: “The Jones family,’’ for instance, or “Ralph Jones and family.’’

A new courtesy title, Mx. (pronounced “Mix’’), has been embraced by some transgender, nonbinary or gender-neutral people as an alternative to Mr. or Ms. It was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2015, but the etiquette is evolving, and Smith recommends tailoring “Mx.’’ to the

“But I think he was also happy about it,’’ she says. “He totally got it, and he never even asked why. Just said OK and addressed me correctly.’’

Etiquette is based on historical precedent, but also follows cultural shifts, of which there have been many in recent decades. In other words, “Mr. and Mrs. Husband’s Name’’ doesn’t cut it anymore for a lot of people.

“To address people that way is pretty outdated,’’ says Arden Clise, who owns Seattle-based Clise Eti-

“I actually recommend contacting them individually and asking how they prefer to be addressed formally,’’ she says.

Traditionally, the man’s name came first in addressing a married couple, but now the opposite is proper, Smith says. Address a card with the woman’s name first. And for any married couple, she says, etiquette requires an “and’’ between the two names.

Cut senders some slack There are lots of new rules; understand when it is and isn’t appropriate to be an etiquette cop.

“Don’t bother trying to change your elderly relative,’’ Smith says. “But if your cousin doesn’t know your name, send him a gentle email after the holidays are over and suggest he make the change in his master list.’’ Close the email with a positive note or two, she says, something like “Can’t wait to see you at the family reunion next fall!’’

And don’t let address worries scare you off from sending these annual greetings. People love getting cards in the mail.

Hallmark’s website says nearly 75 percent of consumers who send holiday cards do so because they know it feels good to receive them.

“When in doubt, always send the card,’’ Smith says. “This is such a wonderful way to keep in touch with family and friends.’’

The prototypes are high-tech communications devices placed in a firefighter’s gear — gloves or helmet, for example. Using haptic technology, which, in its simplest definition, means touch-based signal, the devices are meant to help a firefighter or first responder navigate a dangerous situation, such as a smoke-filled building, through sensory such as vibrations.

These aren’t technologies that are going to be available tomorrow, Orr said, but quite possibly in the next five-to-10 years.

“First responders are a small demographic compared to the general public,” said Scott Ledgerwood, the user interface and user experience lead for PSCR. “It’s important to get this type of technology in the hands of the public safety community to show the potential impact these types of interfaces could have on their operations.”

The competition was put on by PSCR, federal laboratory that “conducts research, development, testing and evaluation for public safety com-

munications technologies,” according to its website. It is housed in a Boulder’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) facility, which is a unit of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Ryan Poltermann, who was part of Team DSGN, enjoys working with first responders to try to help solve some of the issues they face, they said. Team DSGN implemented haptic technology into a firefighter’s gloves.

One of Poltermann’s teammates, Kurt Anderson, added that a competition is the “right way to encourage creativity.”

“You have the freedom to explore a number of different ideas,” Anderson said.

Three West Metro firefighters participated in the competition by wearing the prototypes and testing their performance to locate a victim — in this case a dummy — in a smoke-filled structure.

“West Metro values being innovative and relevant,” said Capt. Todd Heinl.

“Collaborating with these innovators allows us to improve our ability to do our job, which is to save lives. Anything we can do to help the community, we’re gonna do it.”
