Mayors discuss building shelters, avoiding growth caps at annual roundtable Five metro area mayors speak during Chamber event

At the annual Mayors Roundtable hosted by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Herb Atchison of Westminster focused his opening remarks on the relationship between metro Denver mayors. His point was best made by listing their recent meetups — he’d seen the Arvada mayor in the past 24 hours, the Lakewood and Denver mayors in the past 48, and he can scarcely go two days without hearing from Wheat Ridge Mayor Bud Starker, he said.

And the roundtable served as the mayors’ latest gathering, when five area mayors — Atchison, Starker, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, Arvada Mayor Marc Williams and Lakewood mayor Adam Paul — joined citizens Nov. 15 at the Arvada Center for a discussion about the issues facing metro Denver today.

The mayors first spoke on homelessness, highlighting some steps in the right direction that the cities have taken over the years.

But for every step forward, the mayors said, there’s also another step to be taken. Multiple panelists said they plan to prioritize the creation of more overnight shelters, particularly for families and particularly in Jefferson County, an area that lacks such facilities.

“You are not going to eliminate homelessness, and we don’t have facilities,” Atchison said. Cities and

District data highlights need for longer lunch times

A Nov. 13 presentation to the Board of Education from leaders with the district’s Food & Nutrition Services sparked some board members to call for a change in how much time students have to eat lunch.

and Nutrition Services Beth Wallace outlining the district’s latest goal, which states that by the 2024-2025 school year, 37% of Jeffco students will participate in school meals. For 2018-2019, about 32% purchased meals, putting the district behind some of its surrounding counterparts.

According to the department’s data, 49% of students in

Denver Public Schools participated in school lunch last year, 34% participated in Cherry Creek School District and 43% participated in Adams 12 Five Star Schools.

However, Jeffco’s participation surpassed that of Boulder Valley School District, which weighed in at 27%.

counties must find a way to create such facilities, as his city and others have seen a “reduction” in churches willing to provide one-night shelter because of “liability issues,” he said.

The conversation moved to the need for affordable housing in the area, with panelists agreeing that a main strategy is to incentivize developers to build affordable units.

Paul and Williams also suggested that cities work together not only to provide affordable renting options, but home-owning options as well.

Williams named a few ongoing ideas to implement such options in

Arvada, such as planned “microhousing” projects, which would be homes of 600 square-feet or less on the north side of 58th Avenue, near the Stenger Sports Complex.

“You are seeing (affordable) townhomes and condos being built” as a result of mayors working with legislators, Williams said. “We’re looking at creating ways of dealing with this issue.”

On the topic of growth, several of the mayors cautioned against a statewide growth cap. With Lakewood voters having passed a growth cap this past summer, Paul said there are “unintentional consequences of growth limits.”

Atchison agreed that a growth cap “would kill businesses” by preventing new customers from moving into the area.

And Williams, when asked what to do about growth, suggested the cities focus primarily on improving transportation systems and garnering support for measures like Proposition CC, intended to see more taxpayer money go to roads, instead of being returned to taxpayers, which Colorado voters did not pass Nov. 5.

“When people are concerned about growth, it’s really traffic,” Williams said. “We’ve got to get our citizens to the point where they say, ‘we’ve got to fund infrastructure.’”

Boulder Valley was also the only surrounding district listed with higher lunch prices than Jeffco, with its lowest-cost option priced at $3.50; Jeffco’s lowest-cost option is $3.25, as is Cherry Creek’s. Denver and Adams 12 offer options for less than $3.

However, Wallace said the answer to increasing participation does not lie in decreasing costs, as can be gleaned from recent data; while Jeffco raised its prices by roughly 40 cents in the past year, participation in school lunch has increased from 30% to 32%.

As for the causes of the increase, “I’m going to compliment Erik (Food

and Nutrition Services Director of Operations Erika Edwards) and her team on some great new menu items and listening to feedback,” Wallace said.

But to get to 37% by 2024, the district still needs to make some changes, she said. Namely, the district would like to address the limited time Jeffco students have to eat lunch.

According to a survey conducted by Food & Nutrition Services, elementary students have an average of 20 minutes to eat lunch; middle school students have an average of 30 to 35 minutes; and high school students have an average of 35 minutes, Wallace said.

Board member Brad Rupert centered his comments and questions on this data.

“We can do all the remodels in the world, we can have the greatest menus

in the world, but if a kid has to spend seven minutes of their fifteen minutes waiting (in line), they have eight minutes to wolf it all down,” he said.

“They’re not going to be able to eat it all, so a lot will go to waste, or they’re going to bring something from home.”

In hopes of finding multiple ways to increase participation, Wallace said her team has focused on “increasing the amount of locally prepared foods available in schools and enhancing the environment in which meals are served.”

The team has incorporated possible strategies to accomplish this in its Food & Nutrition Services Master Plan. The directors aim to present the finalized plan to the board in January 2020.

One main component of the plan is the creation of a “central production

facility,” Wallace said. Ideally, local farmers would bring fresh produce to the facility, where workers could then wash and package the produce to be taken to Jeffco schools.

“Food waste occurs because we don’t buy things that are packaged the size that we need here in Jeffco,” she said, but with the facility, employees could “package them (produce) into sizes that would work in our schools.”

While board members Susan Harmon, Ali Lasell and Rupert commended the team for its work on these endeavors, Rupert suggested putting an even greater focus on lengthening lunch times for students.

“It is a problem that we don’t give more time to eat,” he said. “We can’t really fix all of the other things unless we can fix that.”

National Association of Realtors Outlaws the Practice of Having Pocket Listings

During its annual convention earlier this month, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) voted to ban the practice of pocket listings. Pocket listings are listings which are withheld from the MLS, thereby denying other Realtors (and non-Realtor agents) from showing and selling the listings. The rule goes into effect on January 1, 2020, but NAR is giving MLSs until May 1st to fully implement it.

Regular readers of this column know that I have long decried the practice of selling listings without putting them on the MLS. Doing so increases the chances of the listing agent “doubleending” the sale, resulting in twice the commission, but it also runs the risk of netting less money for the seller, thereby violating the ethical and legal requirement that listing agents work in the best interest of their sellers instead of themselves.

Perhaps you saw me quoted on page 10A of last Thursday’s Denver Post as welcoming this new rule. As I stated to reporter Aldo Svaldi, the only way to guarantee the highest price for our sellers is to expose their listings to the full market of potential buyers. When the listing agent convinces a seller to accept an offer before their home is put on the MLS, there is no way of knowing how much money the seller will “leave on the table.”

The purpose of an MLS is to provide “cooperation and compensation.” Mem-

bers of an MLS must allow any other member of the MLS to sell their listing and makes it known how they’ll be compensated — in our market, typically 2.8% of the sale price.

The new policy, called “clear cooperation,” is spelled out in the following motion passed by a 91% to 9% vote of the NAR board of directors: “Within one business day of marketing a property to the public, the listing broker must submit the listing to the MLS for cooperation with other MLS participants. Public marketing includes, but is not limited to, flyers displayed in windows, yard signs, digital marketing on publicfacing websites, brokerage website displays, digital communications marketing (email blasts), multi-brokerage listing sharing networks, and applications available to the general public.”

I can provide an example from my own practice. In November 2018 I listed a home for $1.1 million. Even before I put it on the MLS, a close friend of the seller said he would pay full price. My advice in such a situation is to consider such an offer “the opening bid” and to proceed with exposing the home to other buyers by putting it on the MLS. Five days after putting the home on the MLS, bidding had driven up the price significantly and it sold (to the same friend) for $75,000 above full price. The seller was delighted, and so was the buyer.

I could easily have saved myself the chore and expense of marketing the home and managing competing offers, but I would have been violating my duty to the seller and, it turns out, cost my seller a lot of money. I particularly like that the seller netted the full listing price, even after deducting commissions and the other costs of selling!

It will be interesting to see how this rule is implemented by MLSs and how effective it will be. One work-around we can expect is that listings will go on the MLS with the notation that “showings begin on such-and-such a (later) date.”

One of our broker associates, Chuck Brown, attended the NAR convention, including a panel of the titans of real estate — from Realogy, RE/MAX International, Zillow, Opendoor, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, and others — and they, unlike the board of directors, were mostly against the new policy on pocket listings. Zillow and Opendoor in particular, say they’ll continue to list properties as coming soon.

Clearly the new rule will restrict but probably not eliminate the practice. REcolorado’s Rules & Regulations Committee, on which I have sat for over a decade, will discuss it on Dec. 10th.

TV Viewing Recommendations

As a follow-up to last week’s item about our “Post-Factual Era” coming to an end, I have two cable viewing recommendations for readers wanting to understand current political events.

Family Leadership Training Institute accepting applications The program is designed to build community leaders

Denver residents Julie and Catalina Kerwin have spent plenty of time together wandering around Sloan’s Lake. The mother, daughter pair saw the wildlife like birds and geese living in an area that was polluted with trash. They thought a cleanup of the park would be beneficial — but the only problem was they didn’t know how to go about organizing one.

After the two went through the Family Leadership Training Institute 20week program last year, they gained the tools they needed to organize and complete their cleanup of the lake.

“My mom and I wouldn’t have done it without the Family Leadership Training Institute. It gave us the tools and confidence to complete the project, and we’ve seen the impact in our community,” said Catalina. Her and Julie plan to bring an education component of their cleanup effort to schools to teach children about the environmental impact trash has on the lake.

The Kerwins’ project was developed through the Family Leadership Training Institute, a program that gives adults and teens an opportunity

to develop into civic leaders. Coordinated by Colorado State University Extension, participants in the Family Leadership Training Institute learn how to engage with local, regional, state and federal elected officials, how to advocate for issues, learn public speaking skills, how to work with the media and more.

Although the program is 20 weeks long, participants receive a free dinner when they meet for four hours each Wednesday night. The first 10 weeks of the program revolve around personal development and personal awareness. The last 10 weeks center around how to impact the community.

People like mayors, school board members and county commissioners have gone to speak to program participants in the past.

Throughout the program, participants work on their own community project, similar to what the Kerwins did with the Sloan’s Lake cleanup.

Santa House gift drive seeking donations for families in need Drive runs Dec. 11-19

When Duane Youse and Joel Folk first launched the Santa House, a gift drive for low-income families in Arvada and Wheat Ridge, the project wasn’t without its challenges. The first year, organizers ran out of toys to give to families, and a snow storm hurt participation, Youse said.

But what wasn’t an issue was the passion of the community to help others, which over time, built the Santa House into an endeavor that has served nearly 30,000 children in its 13 years.

“Arvada has always been a community that has stepped forward for causes, particularly surrounding families and kids, so it’s always been easy to get help,” Youse said. “They’re just a different type of people out here than I think anywhere else.”

Having spent more than a decade fine-tuning the drive, Youse and Folk have passed the torch to residents Cheryl and Henry Norton, who have volunteered with the drive for two years.

“It’s a great opportunity to serve the community. I think it’s important to spread holiday cheer,” Cheryl said.

“The more we pass forward our good fortune to others, hopefully, the more

contagious giving can be.”

The 14th annual Santa House will take place on the first floor of Arvada Presbyterian Church, 5592 Independence St., Dec. 11-19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The drive will be closed on Dec. 15.

The drive will hold extended hours, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Dec. 13 and 18.

Families whose children attend one of 17 specified Jeffco schools will receive a voucher through the school, likely before Thanksgiving, Norton said. Families must bring their voucher with them to be eligible to participate in the Santa House.

For each student, parents can pick up two toys; a book; a coloring book; crayons; a hat and a pair of mittens.

The drive also provides gift wrapping materials.

The program runs in collaboration with community group AWRSAY (Arvada Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth), which includes more than a dozen participating partner groups, including Jeffco Public Schools and the cities of Arvada and Wheat Ridge.

Santa House began accepting donations Nov. 1, asking for new, unwrapped toys for children up to 12 years old, or monetary donations.

Those contributing should bring donations to any Apex Park and Recreation District facility, which are listed at apexprd.org. They can also give a

The Apex district will accept donations through Dec. 8, while Arvada Presbyterian Church will accept donations on-site on Dec. 9 and 10.

Norton and her fellow organizers also seek volunteers to run the event and guide families through the Santa House. For each day of operation, the

drive will need about 50 volunteers, she said. Prospective volunteers can get involved by reaching out to volunteer coordinators with any AWRSAYaffiliated group, she said.

Further, the event is already looking ahead to next year, with Youse asking community or faith-based groups with available space for the 2020 drive to reach out.

Jefferson County commissioners approve 2020 budget Budget includes $16.1 million in cuts to general fund

Jefferson County Commissioner Libby Szabo on Nov. 12 pointed out that Jefferson County is not the first jurisdiction to face budget cuts.

“And it won’t be the last,” she said.

“But I think we’re up to the task. We heard the voters loud and clear. They want us to go back and sharpen our pencils and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

The county lacks about $16.1 million for a balanced 2020 budget and to maintain an appropriate reserve fund. To achieve that amount, the county proposed a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund. There are 15 departments funded by the general fund and it is the county’s principle operating fund.

As a possible solution to the financial challenges — one that would avoid budget cuts — on July 23, the Jefferson County commissioners unanimously approved putting the Jeffco 1A question on the November 2019 ballot. Jeffco 1A asked to allow

the county government to keep excess tax revenue from TABOR. However, on Nov. 5, Jefferson County voters decided not to pass ballot measure Jeffco 1A. The Jefferson County Board of Jefferson County Commissioners approved the 2020 budget on Nov. 12, with the forecasted $16.1 million in cuts to all departments affected by the county’s general fund.

The 2020 budget totals about $605.3 million, and the general fund represents $217.4 million of that, which reflects the $16.1 million in cuts.

According to the budget presentation, these cuts are $5.4 million in public safety, which includes the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office and the First Judicial District’s District Attorney’s Office; $10.1 million from

stewardship, which includes elections and technologies; and $626,000 from health and wellbeing programming such as Jefferson County Public Health’s home visitation programs and CSU Extension services.

Thirteen people addressed the county commissioners about the budget on Nov. 12. Their comments included issues concerning veterans, affordable housing, people with mental illnesses, addressing bond for jail inmates and the Jefferson Parkway.

The Jefferson Parkway is a proposed toll road intended to close the gap between state highways 93 and 128. The Jefferson Parkway will be owned as a public entity by the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA), but privately financed through a private partner also responsible for designing, building, operating and maintaining the parkway, according to Bill Ray, executive director of the JPPHA. Jefferson County is one of three government members in contractual agreement that is funding the JPPHA. The funds have been used for the JPPHA’s initial startup costs, right of way purchases, various impact studies and legal fees over environmental concerns. The private partner will be reimbursing the governmental agencies’ advances, Ray said in a previous interview.

However, the Jefferson Parkway is on hold currently. Additional testing is being done to soil samples taken

from the proposed right of way near Rocky Flats, a former nuclear weapons plant.

Concerning funding the JPPHA, in Jefferson County, rather than providing the money up front, the county reviews the documentation and invoices that the JPPHA provides, prior to paying its portion.

In July this year, a $1 million placeholder was budgeted for the JPPHA in 2020. On Nov. 12, county commissioners decided to reduce that amount by $600,000 to go back into the general fund balance, leaving $400,000 as the placeholder amount for the JPPHA. “Even though you have a set amount budgeted” for the Jefferson Parkway, Deputy County Manager Kate Newman told the county commissioners on Nov. 12, “you still have to approve each allocation, and that would happen in 2020.”

The Jefferson County commissioners had to make “very difficult decisions” on important issues that are taken seriously, Jefferson County Commissioner Leslie Dahlkemper said.

But “one of the areas that’s so strong, and is important for us to point to, is that we’re all in this together and we’re thinking about this together,” Dahlkemper said. “When we think about our quality of life in Jeffco, that’s something we want to preserve. And it’s important that we work together to do that.”

Leafing a good impression Arvada High students volunteer in community neighborhoods

Every couple of weeks or so, Arvada High athletes psyche themselves up for a different type of competition, with each of them picking up a rake and preparing to clear the most leaves from nearby neighborhoods.

The athletes are part of the athletic leadership team at Arvada High, which organizes times for the group to rake leaves in the community as a volunteer service. Most recently, five team members who play girls’ basketball school crossed 65th Avenue and set to work Nov. 13, raking for an hour before practice began.

To start their hour of giving back, students and athletic director Dan Quaratino knock on neighbors’ doors, asking if they would like some help clearing their yards. Even when neighbors don’t answer, the students waste no time getting to work, finishing the yard within minutes and leaving a note in the mailbox to inform residents they’ve been there.

“It’s important because it gets a good face for our student body out there, and it helps us bond and give back to other people,” said junior Rayanne Gronquist, 16.

Quaratino agreed, highlighting that, in a community that is so supportive of its local high school, the students feel compelled to give back.

“People ask, ‘why are you doing this?’ Really, it’s just because we care,” he said. “Our core beliefs are service, community and love, so it’s our way to give that love to the community.”

After 70 plus years, Rockley Music Center to say goodbye to Lakewood Instruments will be sold for ”once in a generation” prices

During the Rockley family’s 70 plus years of operating the Rockley Music Center on West Colfax, adapting to the needs of the community has been vital. When Melvin and Mildred Rockley opened the store’s original location at Colfax and Wadsworth in 1946, the family sold washers, dryers, print music, record players and band and orchestral instruments.

Once 1955 hit, the couple moved their business to its current location at 8555 W. Colfax Ave. where they designed and helped to build the location. The washers and dryers were replaced with music records, a guitar department and a teaching studio where residents could learn instruments. Eventually, a piano department was created along with a piano showroom.

But all good things must come to an end, and the Rockley Music Center is planning on closing its Lakewood location, hopefully by the end of the year.

The instruments like violins, violas, cellos, basses, grand pianos, keyboards and more will be sold for what the store is calling “once in a generation” prices starting Nov. 19.

“Any kid who played in band or orchestra (in the Lakewood area) went through the Rockley music store,” said Alcorn.

“There’s not that many music stores in the Denver area, and they’ll be remembered for serving a population that is very energetic and (didn’t) have that many options. Rockley has done a good job of providing resources for people who wanted to get started (in music),” Alcorn said.

One of those resources included the Rockley Music Center’s teaching studio, a place that served students like Carl Eager. Eager, a junior at Lakewood High School, has aspirations to be a jazz musician. He went to the Rockley Music Center for three years where he took trombone lessons.

“The people there are great, and I think it helped me going there. I have a lot of good memories there,” said Engur.

Although Rockley Music Center is shutting down its Lakewood location, it’s not going away entirely. The business will say goodbye to retail life and will turn its attention to its nonprofit — the Rockley Family Foundation.

It works to bring music education to schools and students in need by raising money for music scholarships, donating music instruments to under privileged communities and more.

Once the Rockley Music Center closes, the business will move to a warehouse location where it will offer piano moving, storage, tuning and limited sales.

“We’re looking forward to going into the next location, and we’re excited to bring music in a tangible way. It’s what the community needs us to do,” said Tobin Rockley, owner of the Rockley Music Center, and the grandson of Melvin and Mildred Rockley. “We’re looking forward to getting to serve musicians into the next generation.”

In Colorado, 24 high-hazard dams are seen as problematic Jeffco, Denver structures among those with risk of deadly failure

Two dozen aging dams in Colorado were in unsatisfactory condition and are located in places where their failure would likely kill at least one person, according to an Associated Press investigation that found at least 1,688 such dams nationwide.

The 24 Colorado dams range in age from 41 to 127 years old and are used for irrigation, recreation and drinking water supply, according to public records obtained by the AP during the more than two-year investigation.

They are spread among 16 counties, with El Paso having four, Jefferson three and Mesa and Park counties having two each.

Records show the dams are upto-date with their inspections, and all have emergency action plans in case of a failure. In addition, work is underway or planned for some of the dams, and at least one in El Paso County, South Lake Dam, has been repaired, said Bill McCormick, chief of Colorado Dam Safety at the state Division of Water Resources.

Twenty-one of the 24 Colorado dams are privately owned or owned by local governments, and the decision to fix a dam is the owner’s, McCormick said.

State regulators can order a reservoir’s water level lowered to a safe level if a dam is in unsatisfactory condition or drain the reservoir if there is no safe level.

“If owners can live with less than full storage, they may not have the incentive to fix their dam,” he said in an email to the AP. “We try to incentivize owners to fix their dams, but the decision is theirs. “ One of the 24 dams is at Smith Reservoir in Lakewood. Officials are restricting the amount of water in the reservoir because of high seepage when the water level is within 2 feet of the spillway, according to a 2018 inspection report.

Engineers’ models show that if the privately owned dam failed, water from the Smith Reservoir would flow east seven miles through residential and industrial areas until it reached the South Platte River, according to a 2017 emergency action plan.

It is considered a high-hazard dam in unsatisfactory condition. It was constructed in 1900, and was last inspected in February 2018.

Upper Long Lake Dam is located near Highway 93, north of Golden and just west of the Ralston Water Treatment Plant that serves Arvada. It is rated as a high-hazard dam in unsatisfactory condition. It was constructed in 1939, and was last inspected in May 2018.

In September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded Colorado more than $260,000 to conduct risk assessments and repair high-hazard dams, the term used to describe a structure whose failure would likely result in at least one death.

Officials plan to put part of that money toward designing a fix for the leaking area at the Smith Reservoir Dam, McCormick said.

With Colorado’s growing population, more people moving into downstream communities will be exposed to potential dam failure. State officials said in the hazard mitigation plan that El Paso and Larimer’s exposure will be

considered “extreme “ with projected population increases of 36% and 42%, respectively, between 2010 and 2030.

State officials have identified 24 high-hazard dams in El Paso County, and those that the AP investigation found are in unsatisfactory condition are the South Lake, Teller, Valley No. 1 and Valley No. 2 dams.

There are 54 high-hazard dams in Larimer County, but none were listed in unsatisfactory condition as of 2018, according to the AP investigation.

The 24 Colorado dams were identified in a two-year investigation by the AP in which it found at least 1,680 dams nationwide rated as high-hazard and considered to be in poor or unsatisfactory condition.

Emergency plans obtained by the AP indicate that thousands of people living and working downstream could be at risk if those dams were to catastrophically fail, while separate inspection reports cite a variety of problems. Those include leaks that can indicate a dam is failing internally, unrepaired erosion, holes from burrowing animals and extensive tree growth, which can destabilize earthen dams. In some cases, inspectors also flagged spillways that are too small to handle the amount of water that could result from increasingly intense rainstorms due to a changing climate.

The AP’s investigation covers the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico but excludes five states that did not fully comply with records requests.

Observing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women A news article from San Diego popped up in my email this weekend: “Man Kills Estranged Wife and 3 Sons.”

ALCHEMY The subhead – the woman had obtained a restraining order fewer than 24 hours before the shooting – sickened me, even as I prepare to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Andrea Doray Women Day on Nov. 25.

The police believe her estranged husband knew about the restraining order. And now she’s dead. And three of her (their) children are dead. And

gunman kills at least four people, one of the victims is a partner, former partner, or family member.

This column is not about guns, by the way. I’m writing about intimate partner violence, a subject currently playing out in Colorado to national attention in the death of Kelsey Berreth. Kelsey’s former finance has been convicted of killing her with a baseball bat. And, according to a 2018 Washington Post analysis, such deaths of intimate partners often are especially brutal encounters that include stabbings, strangulation and beatings.

Twenty-five years ago, the Violence Against Women Act was signed into U.S. law to help protect victims of domestic violence. The VAWA must be

Tragic, senseless, horrifying? Yes. Frightening and intimidating for potential victims? Definitely. Preventable? I don’t know the answer to that one.

I do know data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that one in four women and one in 10 men in this country have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. The New York Times reports CDC data that nearly half of all the women killed in U.S. are killed by a current or former male partner.

This is ridiculous. Protecting people – men and women – from intimate partner violence should be a nobrainer bipartisan effort and a topic of national concern.

Happy little holiday outing ideas

went for a little run the other night, and, as usual, I tracked it with Endomondo.

No, I’m not going to tell you my time, my distance, my average speed ... Nothing. Not your business. And it’s embarrassing.

But a thing came up on the program which reminded me that I did HITTING a similar run last HOME year, on almost this exact date. Except that, last year, I did this run on a Sunday night. Why would I do a run on a Sunday night? That’s unusual. And then I remembered that last year, Thanksgiving was a week Michael Alcorn earlier. In effect, you’re reading this column on the day of Thanksgiving last year. We’re all thrown off this year, because Thanksgiving is, literally, as late as it can possibly be, which means we get a truncated Christmas season this year.

Or do we?

That certainly hasn’t been the case for Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, et al.

KOSI even started their Christmas music two weeks ago.

So, it must be vacation time, right?

Of course, a lot of people see this season through stress-colored glasses.

The shopping, the money, the decora-

tions, the family … So, please allow me to point out a few little hidden gems around the area. These are, in my opinion, small venues and events that might make a nice little excursion for the family — a chance to put aside some of the stress and remember to enjoy the season.

Candlelight Dinner Theater This is a beautiful little venue about 45 minutes up the road near Johnson’s Corner. My daughter and I saw a production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” there this weekend, and it was really excellent! The performers are very high quality, and the production team makes great use of the space they have to work with.

Plus, you get dinner! And this whole season, they are performing Irving Berlin’s “Holiday Inn.” Arvada Center Theater Of course, if you don’t want to make such a long trip, we have our own high-quality musical theater right here in Arvada, and the ACPA will be performing “A Christmas Carol—The Musical” this whole season.

United Nations General Assembly launched Spotlight, an initiative to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. And women’s rights advocates around the world have observed November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, for 19 years.

Further, earlier this year, France reaffirmed its “commitment and determination to ensure that the international community combats and eliminates all forms of violence carried out against women,” reiterating its call to end impunity for

perpetrators.

Here in the U.S., we can – we must – provide better support of and protection for victims. Education, training and family programs can just do so much. And, clearly, a restraining order is only as worthwhile as the intent of the person it’s supposed to restrain.

Until bipartisan legislation, including the Violence Against Women Act, holds perpetrators accountable and protects intimate partners from violence, these victims will continue to become grim statistics … and even more horrific headlines.

Take the recently failed Prop CC or Jeffco’s 1A with all their claims, partial truths and discussion we all had to decipher these for our votes on them. Ads about restrains or specific accounting do little good when other tax monies are withdrawn from these intentions as these funds are added in their budgets. Why do Colorado governments always seem to ask for periods of timeouts or stopping refunds from the “Tax Payers Bill of Rights,” instead of just calling for tax votes on the specific services or projects as this voter-passed law requires them to do?

It is difficult to understand all the work, jobs or expenditures done when you aren’t personally involved.

Also why do we need to be that mixed up in them? Trusting any organization private or public is complicated since so little faith in how we all vote is given. Do we really “know what we’re paying for” as last week’s letter writer insinuated?

illennial parents who haven’t visited a playground in a decade or two are in for a surprise: The new era of playgrounds is a heck of a lot more fun than the safetyobsessed playscapes of the 1990s and 2000s.

Designers and park planners from a new generation are building kid-driven play structures that are bigger, more interactive and more accessible to people with disabilities than the splintery wood and plastic fantastic playgrounds of yore.

Features that had fallen by the wayside — like merry-go-rounds, see-saws and towering slides — are back, as designers look for ways to get kids out of the house and playing the way kids are meant to play.

Though much of the Paco project is still under construction, the park’s playground opened last year, topped by a 30-foot tower designed to look like a 1950s-era microphone, in honor of Paco Sanchez, a former state representative and radio station owner.

“I throw adults out of the visioning process,” Kitners said. “Secondgraders through fourth-graders are great. There are safety guidelines we have to follow, but the kids aren’t bound by that in their imagination.”

One of Kitners’ crowning achievements is the brand-new playground at Clement Park at Bowles Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, which includes built-in musical instruments, a wheelchair-accessible merry-goround, and a conveyor-belt-like roller slide that sees kids line up for rides.

The new era of playgrounds represent huge leaps in the science of play, Kitners said.

“We’re incorporating a lot of elements that provide different biomechanical stimuli,” Kitners said.

t’s common knowledge how important vehicle maintenance is to having a safe driving experience, but there’s one thing many don’t consider until there’s a problem — tire condition.

Diana Hubner understands the importance of tire condition better than anyone. In 2012 her husband was killed in a car accident caused by the vehicle’s tires being too old.

“It rocked my world,” she said.

“Six years after his death I decided I needed to do something. I was COMING through ATTRACTIONS working my grief and wanted to give it a voice.”

Hubner found her voice in the creation of Tire Mom LLC, which allows her to educate the public about tire safety through her blog, Clarke Reader country-wide tours and publication of her new book, “Tire Mom: A Journey of Hurting, Helping and Healing.”

I spoke to Hubner — who grew up in Littleton — about her book, giving a set of tires away in each state and knowing what’s in your tire halo: Tell me how Tire Mom started: My husband was on a 10-day, cross-country road trip, and while the tread on the tires he was driving was good, we didn’t know to look at the age. We were supposed to have a family reunion at the end, and instead we had a memorial service.

I’m not an expert on this, so I started learning from the experts and really became a mom on a mission. I want other people to be safe, so they don’t have to suffer the pain and heartbreak I went through.

How did you go about raising awareness?

I decided to go to all 50 states give a set of tires to one person or family, and that’s what I did. On July 20, 2018, I walked out my door and said I wasn’t returning until I visited 49 states.

On my blog I share the state-bystate chronicle of my trips, and the book is my journey of healing and heart through gifting the tires, as well as safety information.

What should people know about their tires?

The new Clement Park playground is better in part because it’s a bit riskier, said Sara Baskin, a mom of two toddlers.

“You can fall off this one, but that’s OK,” Baskin said. “Kids learn their limits by pushing them.”

Learning how to deal The new approach is welcome news to Lenore Skenazy, the president of the nonprofit group Let Grow and founder of the Free-Range Kids movement, which advocates for childhood independence and resilience.

“Playgrounds were getting so safe and dull that two things were happening: either kids didn’t want to come, or when they did, they created their own risks,” Skenazy said.

Skenazy recounted horror stories from around the country, like day cares that cut down trees to keep kids from climbing them, schools that got rid of swingsets, and playgrounds declared off-limits because they were built over grass, which was considered a dangerous surface.

“I think there’s a lot of recognition growing that we’ve gone too far,” Skenazy said. “We’re starting to recognize that play isn’t irrelevant. It’s a building

Access for all Park planners are also building with a greater emphasis on access for people with disabilities, said Amber Wesner, the public engagement and operations manager for the City of Lakewood.

Lakewood recently completed a new playground at Carmody Park, on Kipling Street just south of Jewell Avenue, with disability access as a central focus, Wesner said.

“Kids of all abilities can play together there,” Wesner said. “It’s really the vanguard in bigger cities to have at least one universally accessible playground. It helps reduce stigma,

It’s a trend that can’t evolve soon enough for parents like Stacy Warden of Westminster, whose son Noah, 10, has a severe case of cerebral palsy that renders him unable to use his limbs. Warden said that even as many neighborhood playgrounds retrofit existing structures to add amenities like swings for people with disabilities, many are poorly planned.

“Adapted swings are a nice touch, but many of them still lack wheelchair-accessible pathways,” Warden said.

Another problem, Warden said, is that even at parks with accessible structures, parents and children without disabilities sometimes monopolize the equipment.

“Parents turn a blind eye to us, or they’re just oblivious,” Warden said.

The district, which covers a vast swath of the south metro area, is in the process of developing a slew of “nature play” parks, which utilize natural elements like logs and boulders.

Two nature parks are already complete: Creekside Experience at Santa Fe Drive just north of Belleview Avenue, and Lee Gulch a couple miles south on Santa Fe beside Breckenridge Brewery. Others, like Progress Park at Belleview Avenue just east of Windermere Street, have seen a first round of development.

All three are built beside watercourses, and encourage kids to incorporate the riparian area into their play, White said.

“Our communities are growing and getting denser, and anytime you can get kids — or adults — out in a natural environment, the better,” White said.

“It helps instill a sense of environmental stewardship, and it helps build connections to wildlife.”

Developing bigger and better playscapes will be key to addressing the ills of 21st-century life, White said.

“There’s a lot of talk about how sedentary we’re getting,” White said.

Denver Film Festival encourages wide-eyed viewing Five films not to be missed

“In almost no other environment today can you see a movie without knowing anything about it,” said director Rian Johnson, recipient of the 2019 John Cassavetes Award. “There’s something wonderful about that.”

During the 42nd annual Denver Film Festival, I saw 15 films over 11 days — films that challenged me, perplexed me, and one that even sent shivers up my spine. Of those 15, here’s five that I highly recommend you seek out in the coming months: ‘The Human Factor’ Release date: Early 2020 Director Dror Moreh’s “The Human Factor,” takes audiences behind the scenes of the 1990s efforts by the United States to broker peace between Israel and its neighbors by interviewing the six American diplomats who worked tirelessly on the project. It plays out like a thriller, but a heartbreaking one, because you know how it ends.

The film is a fascinating explora-

tion of the peace process and how culture and history make that process difficult. As one negotiator says, “The Middle East is about history. That’s its curse.”

Nearly 100 Marines, veterans and community members gathered at the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Memorial to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 10. For 25 years, Bessie’s Hope supporters have gone bowling to raise money and awareness for the organization’s intergenerational programs that pair nursing home elders with at-risk youths.

Ralston Valley football grinds out victory over Arapahoe

ARVADA — Ralston Valley quarterback Walker Brickle even got into the running game for the Mustangs’ late Nov. 15 at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Brickle’s 10-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter typified Ralston Valley’s 42-21 victory over No. 15-seeded Arapahoe in the Class 5A football second-round state playoff game. Brickle muscled his way in for the touchdown behind his offensive line as the No. 2 Mustangs went to their ground game to advance to host No. 10 Eaglecrest at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, back at the NAAC in the state quarterfinals.

“We are trying to take what teams will give us,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said of going to the ground game. “We were able to move the ball and we stayed with it.”

Senior Chase Wilson and junior Tyler Roybal carried the load on the ground. Wilson was the workhorse and had a key 6-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that pushed the Ralston Valley lead to 28-14.

“We persevered really well,” Wilson said. “I got some great blocks up front.

Our tight ends played great. (Arapahoe) did take away our passing game.

We changed it really quick and went to the run.”

Arapahoe (7-5 record) made a game of it in the fourth quarter. A 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Cole Hansen after a trick play put the Warriors just 1-score down at 28-21 with 10:47 left in the fourth

However, Ralston Valley had an impressive 80-yard drive that included a 13-yard run by Wilson on a fourthand-1 play to wrap up the victory.

Brickle hit senior Caleb Rillos with a 14-yard touchdown with 4:27 left to play to push the lead to 35-21.

“It was definitely a relief,” Brickle said of the touchdown pass to Rillos that pretty much sealed the victory.

A fumble recovery by Ralston Valley junior Will Lester allowed Ralston Val-

ley (11-0) to put in another late score on the second touchdown run of the night by Roybal.

“We are happy that we survived to the next round, but we know there is a lot we need to clean up after this week,” Wilson said. “Eaglecrest has a really great team with a lot of good athletes. We’ll get back at it tomorrow.”

Ralston Valley got out to a 21-7 lead at halftime. Brickle connected with junior Devin McNearny for a quick

scoring strike to start the game. The Mustangs grabbed a 7-0 lead 90 seconds into the game.

However, Arapahoe answered with a long touchdown strike on midway through the first quarter. Hansen hit senior Adam Bakke with a 61-yard touchdown pass to tie things up at 7-7 The Mustangs really got their ground game going in the second quarter. Roybal had a 33-yard touchdown run with 5:09 left before halftime. A fumble recovery by Ralston Valley sophomore Zach Friedman set up the Mustangs’ on Arapahoe’s 14yard line.

“Our defense gives us turnovers every single game,” Brickle said. “I know they were coming.”

Two plays later, Brickle muscled into the end zone from 10 yards out to push the Mustangs’ lead to 21-7 at halftime. Arapahoe had a big 95-yard scoring drive in the third quarter that took up nearly half of the quarter to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 21-14.

“We had a little rust coming off the bye,” Brickle said. “It was more of a wake-up call game. We’ll be good next week. We just need to be more focused through the week.”

Loyd was pleased with how his team handled the win.

“We are advancing and happy about that, but the kids weren’t celebrating,” Loyd said. “The kids were already like, ‘We are going to be better.’ That is great as a coach. They weren’t satisfied.”

Pomona football hits its stride in playoff win over Legend

ARVADA — Pomona offense came alive in the second quarter Nov. 15 at the North Area Athletic Complex.

No. 12-seed Legend held a 7-0 lead on No. 5 Pomona in the second round of the Class 5A football playoff game, but the Panthers proceeded to score 36 unanswered points on the way to a 36-7 victory.

“We just need to start games like that and finish games like that,” Pomona senior linebacker Sanjay Strickland said. “We need to play smash-mouth football.”

Pomona (7-4 record) had a 21-point second quarter to take a 21-7 lead at halftime. Senior Chase Lopez had a pair of short touchdown runs from the Wildcat formation. Junior Jack Pospisil snagged a crossing route pass from quarterback Brady Ritzmann and raced into the end zone for a 38yard touchdown.

“We are dropping like flies. We are really beat up,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said of the Panthers’ injuries. “We have to find a way to piece it together.”

The Panthers’ stellar defense got into the scoring action with a safety

“Our front seven is still really, really good,” Madden said of the Panthers’ defense. “We’ll have to rely on them.

Pomona’s offense cashed in the ensuing free kick with a drive dominated by Cruz. The junior had seven carries for 38 yards, finishing off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 30-7 midway through the third quarter.

“I feel healthy,” said Cruz, who has battled injuries himself this season.

“It feels great to be back running the ball. Everything feels great.”

There isn’t a question which 5A team had the toughest schedule during the regular season. Pomona played the No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 seeded teams — Cherry Creek, Ralston Valley, Valor Christian, Regis Jesuit and Columbine.

“We just need to be us, play football and play smart,” Strickland said.

The Panthers closed out their regular season winning five of six, but losing to rival Ralston Valley two weeks ago before entering the postseason. It was a tough 17-0 shutout loss against the Mustangs in what determined the 5A Metro West League champion.

Pomona will likely be without Lopez for the state quarterfinal game. Lopez received an unsportsmanlike penalty and ejected from the game with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter. A 1-game suspension comes with the ejection.

“I definitely need to step up,” Cruz said moving forward into the playoffs.

We work with more than 440 Agency Partners throughout eight Denver Metro counties including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Weld to identify children and families in the most need of our services.

Need: Volunteers are needed in all departments throughout A Precious Child and we offer an array of volunteer opportunities to choose from for individuals (flexible and consistent scheduling available), corporate groups and community organizations. We accept groups of up to 60 attendees. We are in highest need of group volunteers and individual volunteers for our store, receptionist and donation center volunteer positions. More positions also available.

Requirement: Minimum age to volunteers is 5 years of age, 5-12 must attend with a parent/guardian, 13 and older can volunteer on their own.
