G Line ridership builds, but could stall with service cuts Economy, marijuana have led to workforce shortage

Six months after opening, the G Line is still building toward its projected weekday average ridership, which RTD officials had estimated at 9,000.

According to RTD’s latest available numbers, taken in August, the G Line weekday average is “pushing 7,000,” said RTD board member Shelley Cook.

“It’s pretty common that they don’t come in at the projected levels, at least at first,” she said.

In other words, ridership projections are not meant to predict the number of passengers immediately after a line opens; rather, most lines build toward the projection over time until finally settling into the predicted average.

“So far, it’s all good news,” Cook said.

However, at a time when temporary service cuts could be looming — RTD has not yet announced upcoming cuts, but will discuss potential changes at a meeting this November — that build toward 9,000 could be put on hold.

RTD created the line to help guide growth in the area and reduce vehicles on the roads, Cook said — and so far, the line seems to have done just that.

One indicator is the number of cars parked at the Park-n-Ride stations along the line.

Before the G Line’s opening, only two of the stations were open, with hundreds of individuals parking at both each day, presumably to ride RTD buses, Cook said.

the buses and the G Line as opposed to their own vehicles.

August saw a record number of G Line riders, with about 184,000 boardings, as compared to approximately 170,000 during its first full month in May and roughly 164,000 in July.

“It’s always on time, and you don’t have to worry about driving and parking downtown,” said Arvada resident Jeff Coalson, who takes the G Line almost every day to his job in downtown Denver. “It’s nice to just sit on the train and catch up on things.”

Judson Bedin, an Arvada resident who also uses the G Line to commute to work, likewise praised the G Line as a more practical option for commuting.

“It’s definitely more straightforward than taking the bus down to Colfax,” he said.

When it comes to the G Line, he has few complaints, but “scheduling is my main gripe,” he said — referring to the sometimes-extensive layovers between the G Line and connecting lines, and the fact the line stops running around 12:30 each morning.

Bedin and other riders are quick to acknowledge that these scheduling mismatches are going to become more

unavoidable with possible service cutbacks in the months to come.

Why could service be cut?

RTD has been considering service cuts because of a driver and operator shortage, particularly for buses and light rails.

Though RTD attempts to offer driver pay that is on-par, with private sector rates, the competitive economy and several other factors have presented barriers to maintaining and hiring new drivers and operators.

One of the greatest obstacles has been the legalization of marijuana, Cook said, as drivers must be able to pass a drug test at any time.

“The legalization of marijuana has impacted the pool of people willing and able to drive,” she said. “Even if you’re not impaired” while driving, if even trace amounts of the drug are found through a test, “federal law doesn’t recognize a difference.”

The upcoming temporary cuts “may not apply” to the G Line, “but we don’t know that yet,” she said. “I’d be very concerned about seeing cuts this early.

Third Warren Tech center to be built in Littleton STAFF REPORT

After setting its sights on opening a third campus for Warren Tech - Jeffco’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) center that has attracted statewide media attention for its programming — the district has selected a location for the new center.

On Oct. 24, Jeffco Public Schools announced that the third Warren Tech, Warren Tech South, will be built on the Dakota Ridge High School property in Littleton, 13399 W. Coal Mine Ave. In 1973, Pi Warren established the first Warren Tech Center to remove barriers to CTE learning. Decades later, a second campus exists at 11325 Allendale Dr. in Arvada, with an ever-increasing demand spurring the creation of the third campus.

seniors ages 16 and older, with some programming available for graduated students, or individuals 21 and older, through Red Rocks Community College. High school students attend the center while also attending another high school. Warren Tech programs center around trades and technologies such as health sciences, public safety and hospitality.

The new campus location was selected based on the size of the site, its accessibility and its proximity to a high school, Tim Reed said in a press release. Reed is the executive director of facilities and construction management for Jeffco Public Schools.

The center is scheduled to open in fall 2021 and will cost an estimated $10 million from the Jeffco Public Schools Capital Improvement Program.

With investigation closed, fire chief retires, accounting clerk resigns

After placing Fire Chief Jon Greer and accounting clerk Lauri Greer on paid leave in August, the Arvada Fire Protection District has announced that the chief has taken retirement effective Oct. 21. Greer’s wife has also resigned from her position as accounting clerk, said battalion chief Deanna Harrington.

In August, the Arvada Fire Protection District launched an internal investigation of the Greers after allegations were “brought to the attention of the Board,” said a district statement.

Citing policy around confidential

personnel matters, the district did not disclose further information.

“There were no allegations of criminal or suspicious conduct, none of the allegations brought to the Board’s attention were referred to any criminal agency, and the District was never concerned with the financial security of its funds,” said the district’s most recent statement, from board president Bob Loveridge.

The investigation has now been closed, Harrington said.

The Arvada Fire Protection District provides firefighting and emergency medical services to approximately 120,000 people, according to the organization’s website. The district consists of

roughly 200 employees, operating eight fire stations across approximately 41 square miles in Arvada, Wheat Ridge and unincorporated Jefferson County.

Jon Greer joined Arvada Fire in 1979 and was promoted to fire chief in 2007.

Lauri Greer joined the district as an accounting clerk in 2015.

Former president Ed Tomlinson, who served from 1996 to 2004, said that he and two fellow board members had discussed in 2002 demoting Greer, then assistant chief, after the board members approached Tomlinson with the possibility. However, the effort did not garner the necessary support, Tomlinson said.

“With the decisions he made, he

wasn’t the kind of leader we wanted,” Tomlinson said. He called some of Greer’s actions “significant” but said that Greer had done “nothing inappropriate along financial lines.”

Jon and Lauri Greer could not be reached for comment in spite of multiple attempts.

The Arvada Fire Protection District has posted Loveridge’s statement on Greer’s retirement on the district website, Arvadafire.com.

“The District thanks Chief Greer for his 40 years of service to the District and wishes both Chief Greer and Mrs. Greer the best in their future endeavors,” Loveridge’s statement reads.

Winter Is When Electric Vehicles Really Shine

You may think this claim is counterintuitive, but consider the following.

Electric cars never need to warm up. Get in, put it in drive and go! (In Teslas, there’s not even a “Start” button.) Moreover, your cabin will be warm in less than 1/2 mile, because it doesn't depend on an engine warming up.

You’ll never break down. There is nothing to fail. Remember, it’s just a battery and a motor (or two). You’ll never stall and you’ll never need a boost. There are only 50 moving parts is an electric car. What can fail? I like to tell people that the only time you’ll see an EV on the side of the road is if there’s an accident or a flat tire or the driver needs to duck behind a bush.

With their low center of gravity and 50/50 front-to-back weight distribution, electric cars handle better and more safely on wet or snow-covered roads.

The battery in most EVs is mounted underneath the cabin. My AWD Teslas perform better in snow than my AWD 2009 Lexus RX 240h did.

Imagine the worst winter scenario,

where you get stranded in the snow and need to survive overnight or longer in your car. An EV is perfect for that situation, because you won’t have to stop and start your gas engine to keep warm and worry about carbon monoxide poisoning. The EV will lose less than 5 miles of range per hour to keep you warm.

And it won’t matter if your car is upside down. If you charged your car beforehand, you’ll have long-term warmth.

One of my favorite EV features is the ability to leave the climate system on when I go into a store or meeting on a frigid (or super hot) day. When I return to the car, it will be at 70 degrees. If I’m going to be in a long meeting, I can turn on the heat or A/C using my smartphone app as I’m leaving the meeting room and know that the car will be comfortable by the time I get in it.

As I wrote last month, the best deal in electric cars is a used one. According to Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com), my good-as-new 2015 Tesla Model S 70D has a private resale value of $33,402.

That is crazy. I paid $93,000 for it new.

Office developments headed to Downtown Westminster Plans call for ground-floor retail with seven stories of office space STAFF REPORT

Developers will bring two office projects, totaling 650,000 square feet of space, to Downtown Westminster, the city announced.

The city is partnering with developers Schnitzer West, to develop the two sites in the Downtown.

“With the continued growth of companies along the Denver-Boulder corridor, Downtown Westminster is located directly in the path of progress and is an ideal spot to develop Class A office product with the transit-oriented nature of the site and over 100,000 square feet of walkable amenities,” Schnitzer West’s Doug Zabel said in a written statement.

Design of the first office building is well underway and will include ground floor retail with six to seven stories of office above. The building will be located in the heart of the 105-acre redevelopment site, which is already home to Westminster’s Alamo Drafthouse and 600 residential units that are open or under construction.

“The amenity rich environment plus Class A office product is the perfect formula to meet the needs of today’s growing corporate clients that value the quality of the employees experience which ultimately leads to higher productivity rates.”

Other developments expected in early 2020 include the 125-room boutique Origin Hotel, along with Tattered Cover Bookstore, located at the hotel entrance.

“Adding an office user to Downtown Westminster takes it one step closer to a true, sustainable downtown by ensuring a consistent daytime population of employees,” Mayor Herb Atchison said.

“The addition of office will also attract more amenities for workers, including retail, restaurants and service businesses.”

Downtown Westminster has the capacity to include a total of two to four million square feet of office when it is built out.

“This is just the beginning in the Downtown,” said John Hall, Economic Development Director. “Now that we have key amenities like dining and entertainment in place or opening soon, it’s a major attraction for office.”

Colorado launches digital ID in state’s mobile app Coloradans can now create an electronic version of their driver’s license or state identification card that can be displayed on smartphones for proof of identification, age and address in Colorado.

The launch of the Colorado Digital ID in the myColorado mobile app, the state’s official mobile app, was announced Oct. 30 by Gov. Jared Polis, according to a news release. Colorado Digital ID is a secure, unique visual representation of what has traditionally been the legally accepted official physical format of a person’s identification.

“As technology evolves, I’m excited to make sure that government keeps up with the times. We are rapidly moving to support the use of mobile digital identity solutions that allow any of us to verify our identity and conduct business without the need to carry a plastic identification card,” Polis said in the release. “Colorado continues to be a national leader when it comes to technology.”

Polis also signed an executive order stating that Colorado Digital ID shall be authorized, and may be accepted, as a legal form of personal identification for use in Colorado, the release said. The Colorado business community is highly encouraged to begin accepting the Digital ID, and state agencies are advised to accept it beginning Dec. 1.

Sixty percent have less than $10,000 in savings (including investments and retirement plans), and debt among seniors has never been higher. Nearly half of homeowners ages 65–79 carry a mortgage.

In addition, seniors are living longer than previous generations.

All this adds up to a tough reality: funding longevity is hard.

However, there is a smart way to afford retirement, and live without a monthly mortgage payment: a home equity conversion mortgage, or HECM. To qualify for a government-insured HECM (reverse mortgage), at least one borrower must be 62 or older, the home must be your primary residence, and you should have 40–60% equity. Green Mountain’s Geometry in Construction program being offered at other Jeffco Schools The program sees students apply geometry skills to build a house for a family in need

Traditional math classes in high school typically involve students working on math problems revolving around hypothetical scenarios but when Green Mountain High School’s Scott Burke arrived on the school’s campus last year, things changed for the school’s freshmen and sophomores.

Burke, who teaches math and the program, helped start the Geometry in Construction program over ten years ago at Loveland High School and brought the program to Green Mountain High School last year. Now, other schools are starting to follow.

Some Jeffco Public Schools like Columbine High School, Chatfield High School, Golden High School, Jefferson County Open School and McLain Community High School are now offering Burke’s Geometry in Construction program this school year. Half of the program teaches students basic geometry skills, and the other half requires students to apply geometry to constructing a house that is donated to Habitat for Humanity — a nonprofit organization that works to provide residents in need with a home.

“I hated math in middle school, and once I got to this, it became my favorite subject. I really enjoy doing all the math on the inside, and the construction on the outside,” said Green Mountain High School sophomore Olivia Graves, a student in the program.

“It gives me a hands-on activity and a way to understand what we’re doing in math and how to put it together outside. It’s a good life experience.”

Andrea Sardoni, who runs the Geometry in Construction program at Columbine High School, said the telling point for her on the program’s impact came during parent-teacher conferences. One of her students in the class is doing extremely well in it, she says. The student’s mother asked if her son should be moved into a higher math class, but he said no _ because of how much he enjoys the class.

“I think this is the best course I’ve ever taught. It’s a super exciting opportunity for these kids to be able to learn the math, use it, learn marketable skills, and beyond that, to serve in the community,” said Sardoni.

“There’s so many wonderful aspects of this program.”

At McLain Community High School, students in the Geometry in Construction program have already started using geometry skills learned in class to build two chicken coops to get used to using power tools. In a couple of weeks, McLain Community High School will merge with Green Mountain High School to build a house.

“(Students in the program) get to see something that is bigger than themselves. They’re really excited to be able to give back while still earning high school credit,” said Melodiegh Christiansen, who teaches the Geometry in Construction program at McLain Community High School. “I think the math is challenging for our students, which is good. Once they see where it’s used, you see the light bulb go off, and it kind of just clicks for them.”

Two years ago, Arvada residents Autumn and Steve Guzman drove down to a congregate care facility in Adams County, on their way to pick up the 12-year-old girl who the couple was mentoring through the Adoption Exchange’s CHOICE program. The program connects foster children with members of the community, who participate in monthly outings and provide guidance in areas such as schoolwork and life skills.

As the Guzmans prepared to pick up their mentee for a program picnic, they questioned whether they had the right address. They had been expecting a home, but instead found themselves at the residential facility — which, rectangular and colorless, made the couple think they’d arrived at a warehouse or prison, Autumn said.

“It’s where she lived, but it wasn’t a home,” Steve said. “That’s not a good environment for a kid to be in.”

As they came to know the girl better, the Guzmans would learn what life at the facility was like. Though children

Though the facility had many security measures in place, incidents often brought police to the scene.

And from their first visit, the Guzmans were determined to become certified as foster parents, hoping to

one day foster and adopt the girl.

A statewide shortage From year to year, one fact generally stays the same: Colorado needs more parents to adopt children out of foster care, and it needs more foster parents to house children until adoption or adulthood, said Minna Castillo Cohen, director of the Office of Children, Youth and Families at the Colorado Department of Human Services

HUD to help Jeffco foster kids get started

County organizations receive funding for housing program

Housing costs in the Denver metro area are hard enough, but imagine trying to get your first place without a parent’s help, or a childhood home to fall back to.

“Trying to make it, with no home support, trying to go to school full time, or even working full time without any higher education, it’s really unfair,” is how Lori Rosendahl. CEO of the Jefferson Housing Authority.

That is exactly the situation many of the young adults leaving the Jefferson County foster system encounter. But a new pilot program, which just got five times as large thanks to a grant announcement by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, aims to help with that.

The Jefferson County Housing Authority is seeking landlords willing to participate in the program.

The CDHS is always looking to get this message out, and that’s especially true in November, which marks National Adoption Month. The month’s purpose: to encourage families to consider adoption, foster care or simply starting with programs like CHOICE, while raising awareness around the stories of local adoptive families, Cohen said.

To kick off National Adoption Month 2019, on Nov. 2, the State of Colorado recognized five families for their perseverance and commitment to adoption, including the Guzmans.

On Dec. 22, 2017, the family began fostering their CHOICE mentee, and on Aug. 23 this year, they adopted her into their family. The Guzmans have requested their daughter stay anonymous for privacy reasons.

Looking back on the road they took to get here, the family notes the challenges they met at every turn. They’ve reworked scheduling conflicts to become foster-carecertified as quickly as they could. They’ve fought to keep their daughter with them, instead of being transferred to another foster home, during the multiple surgeries Autumn underwent after a breast cancer diagnosis last year. And they’ve had countless conversations with their daughter to make their situation work, no matter what difficulties they face.

“Whenever it got hard, we had to remember why we were doing it,” said Autumn, who has since recovered from her illness.

She added that everything was worth it when “we got to tell her she could come live with us. Having her be a part of our family has been a breath of fresh air, and it feels so good to hear her be able to talk about the future.” `Worth it every day’ The Guzmans now share their story, hoping it will inspire others to get involved, whether by fostering themselves, adopting or starting smaller with a program like CHOICE. “It is a commitment and you have to be willing to get ready for that,” Steve said.

“And there really is just such a need. There are a lot of kids who fall through the cracks.”

“You could be single or you could be married, and you don’t need an abundance of cash resources,” she said, adding that for every family, agencies and counties provide all necessary training and preparation. “We’re looking for adults interested in providing that strong, secure place.”

As for the Guzmans, while every day brings new difficulties, looking back, the entire family is emboldened by everything they’ve already overcome, they said.

And, after spending 2,340 days in foster care and staying in 10 different homes, their daughter’s outlook on life has changed after the adoption, they said — and so has theirs.

“She’s ready for an adventure all the time, and to be part of that is what makes it worth it every day,” Steve said. “This is one of the most tangible differences you can make.”

In 2015 my industry was put on notice that the landscape was changing by way of the Fiduciary Rule proposed by the Obama administration. The rule was born out of the simple principal: You want to give financial advice, you’ve got to

put your client’s interests first. Makes sense, right? Seems like a no-brainer? But through many appeals, hearings, and delays, the fiduciary rule has yet to become law.

Even though not required, we choose to practice a fiduciary standard in our office which means we are morally obligated to put our clients’ best interest first. The investment advice you receive must be made using accurate and complete information.

We must disclose any conflicts of interest and use a “best execution” standard when trading your money.

This high standard also requires meeting with our clients at least once per year to review their portfolio and plan.

It is a high standard, but essential for anyone handling your money. If

Molson Coors Brewing Co. is laying off 500 workers worldwide and restructuring its operations as it faces declining beer sales.

The company expects to save $150 million by closing offices in Denver and elsewhere and simplifying its structure. Its four business units — U.S., Canada, Europe and International —will be consolidated into North America and Europe, with other regions reporting to those two.

Chicago will be its North American headquarters. Support functions like finance and human resources that are scattered around the U.S. will now be based in Milwaukee.

Molson Coors says it will save approximately $150 million with the new structure. It will use those savings to improve its digital marketing capabilities and introduce new products more quickly, like the canned wine and hard coffee it unveiled this year. Molson Coors says it has been working on reducing the time it takes to bring new products to market from 18 months to as little as four months

Overall Molson Coors reported a third-quarter loss of $402.8 million on Oct. 30. On a per-share basis, the company lost $1.86. Earnings, adjusted for asset impairment costs and non-recurring costs, were $1.48 per share.

That exceeded Wall Street’s expectations, according to Zacks Investment Research. But the company’s adjusted revenue of $2.84 billion which fell short of analysts’ forecasts.

Blaming one bad call is ... a bad call

ou may already know that I’m a bit of a sports fanatic, so fall is full of abundance for me – football, hockey, and more than a passing interest in the World Series this ALCHEMY year … I actually attended the Nationals’ first ever home opener in Washington, D.C. What I’ve learned from years of watching sports is that no matter how tempting it is to blame baffling officiating, Andrea Doray one bad call doesn’t determine the outcome of the entire

game … too much has happened up to that point.

Although I know this intellectually, I’m still unhappy about two earlyseason Broncos’ defeats with questionable roughing-the-passer penalties late in each game that might – might – have cost us these games.

If you watched Monday Night Football on Oct. 14, you probably heard the booth announcers go absolutely nuts about penalties called against the Detroit Lions’ Trey Flowers for illegal hands to the face. Television replays (not official reviews) showed that Flowers didn’t actually commit the fouls and it’s possible – possible – that Detroit would have gotten the ball back after the ensuing Green

Bay field goal. There – might – might have been enough time for the Lions to score in the final seconds of the game. Unexpected outcomes happen all the time.

And, of course, the controversial interference call against the Nationals in the 6th game of their series with the Houston Astros could – could – have changed the entire championship, ending Washington’s season and handing the World Series title to the Astros before a Game 7.

In sports, we have often-dubious technology such as instant replay, which can sometimes result in a do-over. But replay rules don’t apply to all situations and even if calls are eligible for official review, there’s

usually not conclusive evidence to overturn the call.

Even as incensed as I have been, however, with egregious officiating errors – missed as well as misapplied like the roughing-the passer calls against Denver – I truly do recognize that a) people make mistakes, b) technology can’t fix ’em all, and c) one call does not make or break the entire game. Yes, the timing of these calls can affect the rest of the game but – and this is a tough one for me to admit much of the time – the whole of the game, or the season, prior to that point is what makes that particular moment so, well, SEE DORAY, P13

ust so you know where I’m coming from as I direct my ire at some of the people in this community, let me give you a little background on things that matter in the last few weeks: Our local secondary schools has had three students attempt suicide. Three. In the last two weeks.

There is a family in our community, a sweet family with great kids, whose world HITTING has been thrown upside-down by HOME the sudden death of the father.

And these are just a couple things that I, in my professional role as busybody, happen to have heard about. But, events like these serve a wonderful, Michael Alcorn if terrible purpose: they provide perspective.

Now, I know there’s no way most of you reading this can possibly know of these events, they are isolated, and, thankfully, relatively private occurrences.

But for those of us who know of these sad events, the juxtaposition of those with the reaction of some in the community to the choice by Jefferson County Schools not to have a snow day last Wednesday could not be more jarring.

First of all, let me say this: Jeffco Schools made the right call.

The two-hour delay schedule was designed to allow the district to maximize instructional time in the event of a passing weather phenomenon. By 10 o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the snow had been finished for the better part of three hours, the trucks had been busy on the streets for most of the previous 24 hours, and the sun was fighting to peek out. Road conditions — which had been dicey at six in the morning — were quite passable at the time that most students were headed for school.

And, yet, the phone lines at Jeffco headquarters were lit up with complaints (and, apparently, neighboring Boulder Schools was even worse). And we’re not just talking your garden variety community member gripes. No, these included some extremely colorful language, if you know what I mean. There were crude and very personal ad hominem insults.

And there were even threats for district administrators. It was bad enough that the Superintendent, Dr. Jason Glass, felt the need to send out an email that night reminding the community of what we should expect from each other in terms of civil discourse. And, if

you’re tempted to think that maybe it wasn’t that bad, that we overreacted as a community to these attacks, consider that the Boulder version of events earned a segment on the evening news.

Apparently, a good chunk of the offending comments have been traced back to high school age kids in the community. But, that still leaves a significant number of vile comments attributable to “adults” — and I use that term advisedly.

How in the world are we supposed to teach our students how to behave civilly, to manage to disagree civilly, and to co-exist with other people in their classrooms and in their worlds, when adults around us feel so empowered by their online anonymity that they choose to use it to amplify their worst, most base instincts?

Many of us acknowledge that, from time to time, we make bad calls in our own lives and, sometimes, other people make mistakes that affect us. There’s no instant replay and usually no do-overs.

Such a fishery habitat project was accomplished this past summer.

More specifically a major fish habitat enhancement was undertaken in the Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) Kemp-Breeze State Wildlife Area positively impacting the Williams Fork River that enters the Colorado (Fraser) River flows near the town of Parshall.

We who fly fish are drawn to this stretch of the Colorado River as a challenging and beautiful run of mountain river water that supports colorful brown and rainbow trout. The river is a mix of deep runs, feeding pools, healthy population of growing trout and a fish-

ing environment that completes a setting of one of Colorado’s prime fly fishing experiences. But over time the Denver Water flows from the Williams Fork River have compromised the trout habitat.

Denver Water stepped-up with CPW to restore the river bed for improved trout health and spawning cycles. “This project will turn a very good trout fishery into a great one, so we asked anglers for a little patience during the stream bed work,” Jon Ewert, area aquatic biologist with CPW” reflected.

The improvements included reshaping the channel to enhance habitat diversity for all life-stages of trout. The river flow over time had created an overabundance of long riffles. In addition, pools that

provided excellent trout holding areas had fill-in with sediment, further diminishing trout holding pools and spawning.

The Williams Fork Dam completed in 1959 with a power plant feature releases water and electricity to the west slope when Denver Water diverts Fraser River water to the east slope Front Range area. The dam holds 97,000 acre-feet of water, which is the second largest water body in Grand County.

This type of public agency cooperation happens frequently and gives promise of continued quality fly fishing in Colorado.

If you really must find an outlet for your anger, how about you start to transfer all that excess energy into the community, now that the Holiday season is fully on us. Frustrated at the election? Go work at a food bank. Angry about the Broncos? Go take a few old blankets to a homeless shelter. Having a tough time digesting the evening news? Go outside and throw the ball with the neighborhood kids.

Figure out how to cope with disappointment. Because our kids are in pain — and we’re all too angry to notice.

hile watching the snowfall can be relaxing and playing in it can be a lot of fun, driving in Colorado’s snowstorms can be less than desirable.

“We know it’s going to happen,” said Andrew Hogle, a public information officer with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the organization’s Winter Wise campaign. “We’re going to get a snow event.”

There are two new laws Colorado drivers should be aware of when driving in snowy weather. One is the snowplow law, which affects all motorists statewide. It requires that drivers not pass working snowplows. The second is the passenger vehicle traction law, which primarily affects I-70 drivers — including ski resort destinations — west of the metro area.

Colorado’s traction law If winter weather driving conditions are bad enough, CDOT can implement an active traction law on any state highway. When active, there will be highway signage, or motorists can receive an alert by signing up through CDOT’s www.

When the traction law is active, it requires that all vehicles on state highways fit one of these categories: four-wheel/all-wheel drive; equipped with a traction device

such as chains; or have snow tires or tires with mud and snow designation.

In addition, all tire tread must be at least 3/16 of an inch in depth.

“The deeper the tread, the better the snow traction,” said John Tracey, owner of South Park Tire and Automotive Center in Littleton.

But that doesn’t mean everyone needs to replace their current snow tires to be able to get around this winter, Tracey said.

“Many tires are being thrown away before their lifespan,” Tracey added.

To make sure your tires aren’t being discarded before they’re worn, have them checked first to ensure they’re adequate for winter weather, Tracey said. Tires have a small notch, known as a wear bar, built in for self-checking, Tracey said. But any tire shop can also measure the tread for those who are unfamiliar with doing it themselves and/or want an expert’s accuracy.

Tracey also recommends that everyone consult with a tire dealer to discuss what type of tire would meet their specific winter driving needs. For example, Tracey services a lot of seniors who are retired, he said. They may only need a frontwheel-drive car with all-season tires, Tracey said, because they might be able to avoid driving in the snow and ice altogether by staying home during a storm and waiting until after the streets are plowed.

But on the other hand, there are ski-and-snowboard enthusiasts who need to travel safely in the mountains every weekend.

The event starts off with Street Fashion x Art, which debuted last spring to a sold-out show.

This show pairs some of Denver’s youngest and most vibrant designers with talented artists to create a completely unique collection. Another highlight will be the Avant-garde Show, which groups designers, hairstylists and makeup artists together to create styles and designs that push the boundaries of its makers.

The focus on local talent is the keystone of the event, and that’s what has kept it vital for so many years.

“Every city should do this, and more and more cities all over the world are beginning to have their own fashion week,” Price said.

“I wish and hope that people knew… how much we love it and how much we care about representing Denver as respectfully and affectionately as possible. It is a passion project for all of us because we are deeply proud of our city.”

Additional precautions on I-70 CDOT states that “the I-70 mountain corridor is one of Colorado’s most highly traveled corridors … and the corridor is also frequently subject to dangerous winter weather driving conditions.”

This is why I-70 is being targeted for the newest rules of Colorado’s traction law, Hogle said.

Beginning on Sept. 1 this year and continuing to May 31, 2020, the traction law will be active for all motorists traveling I-70 from Morrison to Dotsero.

stretch all winter, every vehicle must be traction law compliant as explained above, or be carrying chains, cables or an alternative traction device at all times.

“A single car spinout can cause a holdup for a couple hundred vehicles,” Hogle said. “We see accidents that could’ve been avoided happen all the time.”

If not compliant with the law, fines can range from $130 for just not being compliant — inadequate tread on snow tires and no alternate traction device, for example — to $650 if the non-compliancy caused a traffic event such as a crash.

Colorado State Patrol will be enforcing the law, Hogle said. For the first year, it will be a secondary offense, Hogle said, such as if you were pulled over for speeding and the state trooper found that the vehicle was additionally not in compliance with

the law.

‘Bow to the Plow’ No matter what street you’re driving on, all motorists need to understand the new snowplow law. Being dubbed “Bow to the Plow,” it means simply: Don’t pass a working snowplow.

“If they’re out there doing their work,” Hogle said, “it means there’s icy and snowy conditions. A little patience goes a long way.”

If snowplows are not working, they’re just like any other vehicle, Hogle said, and it’s OK to pass them on the left. Drivers can recognize a working snowplow because its blue lights will be flashing, and often there will be two of them in tandem, Hogle said.

“It may be an inconvenience” driving behind a slow-moving snowplow, Hogle said, “but a crash is a much worse inconvenience.”

Be smart: Plan ahead Other than knowing the laws, it’s “important to plan ahead and make sure your vehicle is ready for winter,” Hogle said.

CDOT has vehicle and safety checklists available for winter driving preparedness on its website.

A few of these include making sure windshield wipers, headlights and brakes are working properly, as well as having a flashlight and extra batteries; an extra set of warm clothes such as a coat, hat and mittens; water and non-perishable food; a first-aid kit; and jumper cables in case of an emergency.

“Hopefully you’ll never need them, but it’s better to be prepared,” Hogle said. “It’s not just mountain driving that can be hazardous. Be smart about being on the road.”

Even the most cursory look at Disney Pixar Animation Studios’ creative output makes one thing abundantly clear — the studio is responsible for the most astounding creative output of this century. In terms of technical achievement and creative storytelling, nothing comes close.

It’s the partnership between the technical and creative that gets explored in the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s new exhibit “The Science Behind Pixar.”

“The exhibit follows the entire process of how these films and stories are created,” said Greg Koronowicz, the museum’s senior producer of digital media. “It covers everything, from what it takes to animate the 3D characters to lighting and beyond.”

Each section in the exhibit focuses on a step in the filmmaking process — modeling, rigging, surfaces, sets and cameras, animation, simulation, lighting, and rendering — with more than 50 interactive elements along the way.

Visitors can build robots like those in “WALL•E,” create a virtual 3D shape and play it in a 360-degree view and make their own stop-motion animations.

Some of the most fascinating parts of the exhibit pull back the layers on elements of filmmaking that audiences may not even consider, like lighting.

Visitors can see the lengths to which animators went to get light just right underwater for “Finding Nemo” and “Finding Dory,” the challenges of capturing the way light reflects off of shiny surface for the “Cars” trilogy, and the emotional lifting lighting choices can do in “Up.” As with every temporary exhibit, museum educators worked hard to add a touch of the museum’s style and expertise to the proceedings. This includes an exhibit guide specifically created for young children, with highlights that will appeal to them,

“Setting up these temporary exhibits and adding our own elements is something we take very seriously and do very well,” added Jennifer Moss Logan, content specialist at the museum. “We try to pinpoint what will be meaningful and special to our guests and add that.”

If you’ve been moved by the stories Pixar brings to the screen and want to know how they do it, or want to get a taste of the careers available to those who study STEM fields, there is truly something everyone can learn at the exhibit.

“The exhibit expands everyone’s horizons, especially kids who will be coming out of high school and college having studied science, technology, engineering and math,” said Koronowicz.

Día de los Muertos in Lakewood

he spirit of Día de los Muertos came to life in the 40 West Arts District on Nov. 1. The arts district celebrated the holiday as it coincided with first Fridays, an event where galleries and creative businesses are open to the public every first Friday of the month. Día de los Muertos is held in indigenous cultures in Mexico to celebrate life after death. The 40 West Arts District’s celebration had art honoring the holiday, performances, food and more.

Mental health classes offer help for veterans First Aid module gives vets the tools to help others, themselves

The overall goal for veterans that take Community Reach’s Mental Health First Aid classes is to give them ways to help other veterans that are suffering.

“It’s being able to recognize signs and symptoms and behaviors associated with a variety of different mental health challenges,” said Lindy Lewis, communications manager at Community Reach. “And then, through the training where they’ve had the opportunity to practice, we are raising their confidence so when they encounter somebody in crisis, they feel more confident to engage with that person.”

But a side benefit of the program, especially for veterans, is that it helps individuals recognize when they need help.”

“It’s trying to give them information from a non-threatening perspective,” said Jim Kuemmerle, a Community Reach Center senior services program manager and a veteran himself. “They can recognize it in someone else, or in themselves really, first off all. And the next step is to figure out what to do.”

Their course teaches how to respond to signs of mental health and addiction challenges with a specific focus on cultural factors related to military life and to locate mental health resources in Colorado that support veterans, military members and their families.

“We talk about the impact of compound stressers — traumatic event on top of traumatic event, one after another,” Lewis said. “That takes a toll on your mental wellness and here’s things to look for if it’s having an impact. Are you missing work? Are you not producing like you used to? Has it impacted your sleeping habits? Are you starting to self-medicate?”

It’s one of several modules on Mental Health First Aid Community Reach offers throughout the year, each tuned to specific audiences like youth or first responders. They offer the training at their locations,

through employers or through community groups like Rotary clubs or Kiwanis.

The course is designed to counter stigma and teach skills to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health problems to assist those who experience depression, trauma or consider suicide. The course has increasingly becoming a part of law enforcement training in the United States.

As of September, Mental Health First Aid USA reported that more than 1 million people across the United States have been trained in Mental Health First Aid with a base of more than 12,000 Instructors.

Community Reach Center in Adams County reports more than 2,200 people have been trained since it began offering the course about seven years ago.

“It’s modeled on CPR training,” Lewis said. “CPR was developed to educate non-medical people to be able to provide a basic level of first aid.

That’s the exact same intention of this, although it’s exclusively focused on psychological crisis. Just like most of us don’t have the good sense to have F a heart attack in the emergency room, most people don’t reach the critical M point in terms of suicidal thoughts sitting in a therapist’ office.” v The overall goal is same in all p modules — teaching those with no t background in mental health how l to recognize issues. “The youth module is targeted for c adults that have young people in their fi lives,” Lewis said. “So we get a lot of s foster parents.”

The modules for veterans and first a h responders have one big difference from the others, she said. Both groups b think externally, about how they can fi help others.

“So much of their attention is out- fi ward facing,” she said. “They are all tough guys, they can handle all this. c But the curriculum brings up the fact h that the jobs they do exposes them to a i level of trauma that human brains are not meant experience. So here’s what burnout is going to look like and here is what is needed, for you or someone else, needs to do to treat it.”

Mental support for veterans Kuemmerle said he knows the issues veterans face, both as a mental health profession and as a veteran. He served two stints in the military, first in a helicopter battalion in the first Gulf War and later as National Guard medical mobile unit’s behavioral health officer.

In between, he worked as a licensed clinical social worker and a volunteer fire fighter.

“I blended the two together, the social worker and the first responder, and helped out my fellow responders,” he said. “That gave me the itch to get back in the military.”

He began focusing on mental for first responders early in his volunteer firefighting career.

“I experienced my first fatal fire call and I can remember it like it happened yesterday,” he said. “It was in a neighboring town and it was a

fully involved multi-story apartment building. We pulled up, and there were people jumping.”

Later, during an incident debriefing, he called upon his mental health training.

“Things started clicking for me that maybe I need to be a better resource for my fellow first responders,” he said. “And I continued to do that from time to time, and I’d joke with my wife that if she ever saw an incident on the nightly news, she shouldn’t expect me for dinner. I didn’t even have call her, we both new that I was going to get called in.”

That led him to get back into the military.

“There are people that resist help,” he said. “They say, ‘The only way your are going to get me into a VA clinic is when I’m dead.’ So an important part of it all, if you are going to have conversation with someone, is knowing where the resources and help are. And then, you need to know the next step of how to get that person to the help.”

Undefeated Ralston Valley football wins 5A Metro West title

ARVADA — Ralston Valley senior JJ Galbreath appeared to be everywhere on the field Nov. 1 at the North Area Athletic complex.

Galbreath seemed to be in on every other play defensively. On the offensive side of the ball, the senior had a pair of touchdowns catches as No. 2 ranked Ralston Valley shutout rival and No. 5 Pomona by a score of 17-0.

“You can never really tell,” Galbreath said when asked if he thought he would have such a huge game in the regular-season finale. “You just have to come out fighting 100 percent every play and you can’t let up. That’s what we did tonight. We didn’t let up.”

The victory wrapped up an undefeated regular season for the Mustangs (10-0, 5-0 in Class 5A Metro West League) and gave Ralston Valley the conference title.

“It’s a great feeling,” Galbreath said of winning the conference title.

“It’s been a couple of years here since we’ve done that.”

The shutout loss for Pomona was the first time the Panthers haven’t scored in a game since being blanked by Valor Christian back in 2011.

“It’s awesome,” Galbreath said of the shutout. “I think right now with the intensity we come out with our defense it’s awesome. We all fight to the whistle.”

It was a defensive tussle in the first half with Ralston Valley managing the lone big offensive scoring play before halftime. Senior quarterback Walker Brickle hooked up with Galbreath for a 55-yard catch and run with 9:56 left in the second quarter.

Galbreath was able to duck under a would-be tackler and sprint into the end zone to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

game. We really needed that to get going,” Ralston Valley senior Chase Wilson said of the first touchdown catch by Galbreath. “It was a dogfight at first. We needed a big play like that.”

Ralston Valley’s stellar defense got the ball right back to the Mustangs’ offense following the first score. A sack and fumble recovery by Ralston Valley junior Parks Jones. Ralston Valley took over on Pomona’s 28-yard line, but would have to settle for a 40-yard field goal by Jones to extend the lead to 10-0 at halftime.

Pomona (6-4, 4-1) just couldn’t get much going offensively. Ralston Valley’s pressure on Pomona junior quarterback Brady Ritzmann kept the Panthers from mounting much offensively the whole night.

“Our defense has been terrific all year. It’s just another game of playing awesome,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said. “My defensive coordinator Greg Francis is awesome. He gets guys set up and in different looks. It looks like we are bring a lot of guys, but actually we aren’t. We just bring guys from different places.”

Ralston Valley put the game on ice with a 21-yard touchdown from Brickle to Galbreath with three minutes to play to extend the lead to 17-0.

Pomona and Ralston Valley found out Sunday, Nov. 3, that they both received a bye in the first round of the 32-team state tournament. Pomona grabbed the No. 5 seed and hosts the winner of No. 21 Rocky Mountain and No. 12 Legend in the second round Nov. 14-16 at the NAAC. Ralston Valley earned the No. 2 seed and hosts the winner of No. 18 Castle View and No. 15 Arapahoe at the NAAC in the second round the following week. Loyd said the week off will be a benefit to his team that has had some costly injuries this season.

Wilson agreed.

“Coach Madden has a great team.

After this win it’s kind of nice to get heathy again heading into playoffs,” Wilson said.

ARVADA — Arvada West’s boys soccer team is back in familiar territory.

A 3-1 victory over Gateway on a bitterly cold late Friday afternoon at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada sent the No. 4-seeded Wildcats into the second round of the Class 5A state tournament for the second straight season.

It’s also the second year in a row that A-West is the lone 5A Jeffco squad to advance past the first-round. Valor Christian, Bear Creek and Chatfield all lost their first-round playoff games last week.

Last season, A-West defeated Poudre 2-1 in overtime in its playoff opener. The Wildcats’ season came to an end with a 1-0 second-round loss

to eventual state champion Arapahoe.

“I’m very excited,” Johnston said of getting to host No. 13 Rocky Mountain back at NAAC on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

“I know a lot of teams have struggled with them. It will be a very good game for sure.”

The Lobos defeated No. 20 Aurora Central in overtime with a 2-1 victory late Friday afternoon in Fort Collins.

A-West and Rocky Mountain actually faced each other in an early season non-league game. The Wildcats took a 4-1 victory.

“We played them earlier this season, but both of our teams are different at this point in the season,” A-West coach Troy Gette said. “I think we’re all right.”

Faith Christian (8-1) capped off their regular season with a solid victory over D’Evelyn (5-4) 43-31. The Eagles also accumulated their 4th straight Flatirons Conference Championship in the process, going undefeated in conference play. The 16 seniors of Faith can feel proud that they have claimed the conference crown every season during their time at Faith Christian, but what they really want is a state championship. Coach Siravo and his crew can be pleased with eight wins but they really need four more in the month of November to fulfill tthat final goal.

The Nov. 1 matchup with league rival D’Evelyn has been for the conference crown for the last three years and this game was no different. The two teams featured differing styles of play as the Jaguars love to throw the ball and feature wideouts coming from all over the field. Faith loves the ground-and-pound style of offense and methodical running attack.

The Eagles enjoyed ground domination, rushing for more than 400 yards, including 225 yards and three touchdowns from senior running back Erick Granados.

down by returning a kickoff —his fifth special teams score on the year. D’Evelyn added points in the second half but got no closer than 10 during the game. The Eagles defensive effort was not to be forgotten as they intercepted the Jaguars four times, including two snags by Seth Sperger. The Eagles defense has been consistent all season allowing the fewest points in 2A Football coming into the game.

The playoffs now await the Eagles where 16 teams will make the 2A state playoffs. The Eagles will learn their opponent on Sunday, November 3rd and will know their road ahead. The playoffs will start Nov. 9, and continue every Saturday until the championship game at CSU-Pueblo on the Nov. 30.

Arvada West’s leading scorer — Johnston — was key in the Wildcats advancing to the second round. He scored his 16th and 17th goals on the season in the opening half against No. 29 Gateway.

Johnston fired a shot past Gateway goalie Jesus Ascencio with an Olympian defender hanging on him in the 7th minute.

A-West (14-2 record) extended its lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute after a centering pass from senior Zack Marcolina found Johnston in front of the net for an easy tap-in goal.

Things did get a little dicey in the final 10 minutes of the first half. First, Johnston went down with an injury in the 31st minute of the first half.

“A kid kicked my foot just before I was about to plant,” Johnston said of the injury that had him miss the final minutes of the first half. “I pretty much stepped on the side of my foot and rolled my ankle. At first I had a little doubt if I would come back in, but after getting it taped up and the trainer clearing me after seeing me run. It felt pretty good running on it.

in the 34th minute to make it a 2-1 game at halftime.

A-West had several scoring opportunities in the second half, but couldn’t find the back of the net until the 76th minute.

Sophomore Caleb Patterson’s goal sealed the victory.

“Of course it was good,” Gette said of Patterson’s late goal. “In a cold and sloppy game with a bad bounce anything can happen. I did feel pretty comfortable the whole game.”

Junior goalie Jacoby Landskov was sold in net for the final 40 minutes to preserve the victory and shut out Gateway in the second half.

“He (Landskov) has grown into the roll very well,” Gette said of the first-year starting goalie for the Wildcats. “I think he gets better every game. I think the boys and coaching staff has a ton of confidence in him.”

Gette added that he felt A-West could have put several more into the back of the net. Johnston agreed.

“No excuses,” Johnston said about miss firing on a few scoring chances himself that prevented him from getting his first hat-trick of the season. “It was disappointing, but in the end we won. That’s all that matters.”

Denver chef to give away Kindle copies of cookbook

A Denver-based chef will give away free Kindle versions of his award-winning cookbook to help showcase cancer awareness through November.

Chef Dan Witherspoon’s “Mix Match Make Take” has won the Colorado Independent Publishers Award two times. Chef Dan’s Big Amazon Giveaway will take place Nov. 12.

Witherspoon, who owns and runs The Seasoned Chef Cooking School, was diagnosed in 2016 with multiple myeloma. He immediately modified his diet to one of only fresh, whole foods. His eating plan, now featured in “Mix Match Make Take,” supported his complete remission, according to a news release.

“Everyone can have access to better food and proper cooking techniques,” Witherspoon said in the release.

“Writing ‘Mix Match Make Take’ gave me purpose and made me feel whole during and after my cancer treatment. Along with suburb medical treatment, medication and martial arts practice, I am now in remission.”

Witherspoon also has partnered with Make-A-Wish Colorado, and 10 percent of all “Mix Match Make Take” book sales through December will be donated to Make-AWish Colorado.
