Global Goods coffee shop closes doors After six years in Arvada, civic-minded shop is going online

After six years of business, Global Goods and Coffee has closed its location at Olde Wadsworth Boulevard, but not without leaving another globally minded business in its place, and migrating a portion of the coffee business online.

Global Goods and Coffee was a nonprofit Arvada coffee shop staffed by volunteers, where customers could purchase both cups of coffee and artisan handicrafts, created by individuals who have been affected by war.

The shop’s proceeds went to nonprofit Global Refuge International.

The organization provides medical supplies, food and other resources to victims of global crisis, such as war or disease outbreak.

“When we started, we had this grand idea that we could help educate the community on the issues we feel so strongly about,” said Jaden McNeely, executive director of operations at Global Refuge. “Our shop allowed for a tangible way that we could access the population, and they could get great coffee.”

Photos in the upstairs seating area of the coffee shop put faces on the work that Global Refuge International does in Uganda, Syria, Lebanon and many other countries.

On Oct. 19, Global Goods and Coffee held one last day of in-person business before closing up shop and transitioning to an online-only business. The site will continue to sell art created through the nonprofit’s artisan programs in refugee areas.

Additionally, the website will offer a curated coffee service and monthly coffee subscription, McNeely said.

Customers interested in learning more can do so through the website, globalgoodsandcoffee.com.

Meanwhile, the store at 5613 Olde Wadsworth Blvd. will continue to serve Global Refuge and its mission.

On its final day as a coffee shop, the store had more than 200 transactions, a testament to the large number of regulars who have come to know Global Goods as the destination for those looking for their daily cup of coffee and a chance to make a change.

“What I liked was the cause. I’ve really enjoyed that you could buy a cup of coffee for a purpose,” said local Ryan McPherson, who frequently works as a musician in Olde Town and often visited Global Goods while in the area. “I like helping people, and the

coffee shop allowed me to do that.”

And that’s exactly what the goal has been, McNeely said, with the shop accomplishing even more than it set out to do: introducing nearly 100 volunteers to the community each week; raising money for local needs; hosting refugee nights that allowed residents to connect with refugees; and teaching others how to make coffee.

“We feel that our presence has been so impactful to the community,” McNeely said. “Any community that opens their hearts to struggling people ends up being much better for it.”

with council member Mark McGoff questioning whether Colorado prisons have enough beds for the number of inmates coming in.

Polis said the prisons currently have more beds open than was projected for this year. He also highlighted the work the state is doing to alleviate demand in the system, primarily by focusing on prevention and substance abuse.

The state has programs specifi-

cally for individuals who will be released within the next two years, which helps them develop skills, learn about starting their own businesses, connect with nonprofits and make money to have on hand upon release.

“They have to have a plan when they’re released, so that’s what Polis we’re trying to do,” Polis said. “What’s the best way to make sure they’re not going to return to a life of crime?”

portation funding as council members requested more Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) funding for Arvada infrastructure. Council member Nancy Ford highlighted several areas of concern that the city itself doesn’t have the resources to fund.

“We need to fix our infrastructure. I-70 is in horrible shape, and it’d be nice if Indiana could be done by CDOT,” she said. “That’s really the key.”

Polis responded that the state would like to do such infrastructure work, but much of its ability to do so depends on whether

residents vote yes on Proposition CC this November. “If that doesn’t pass, I don’t know where you go,” he said.

Were the legislature to make smaller changes to allow for more infrastructure funding, “you’re not going to see a major difference,” Polis said.

But Mayor Pro Tem John Marriott pushed for the state to explore all possible solutions.

“There’s no time like the present to provide for our long-lasting, into-the-future needs,” he said.

“Let’s not waste this tremendous economic time with inactivity.”

The Crackdown on Hispanic Immigration, Legal & Illegal, Is Hurting Construction Trades Like any homeowner who has lived in Colorado for a long time, I have experienced roof replacements due to a hail storm more than once, and have observed that the roofing industry, like many construction trades, is particularly dependent on Mexicans and other Hispanics for their work force.

So I’ve been wondering how the President’s unrelenting (and increasing) crackdown on immigration from Central American countries has been affecting construction trades, including roofing.

Fortunately, my last big hail storm requiring roof replacement was in May 2017, before the crackdown on such immigrants had matured into what we are seeing today.

Googling the topic and surveying the many roofing companies with which I’ve dealt over the years, I find that what I suspected is indeed the case. Roughly 20% of that industry’s work force has been lost directly or indirectly. It makes me wonder how we will fare in the event of another widespread hail disaster.

The problem is that few non-immigrants jump at the offer of earning minimum or higher wages climbing on roofs in the hot sun and doing the back-breaking work of removing and replacing a

roof. The same is true in the farming industry where migrant labor has been essential to getting seasonal work done.

I remember Elliot Eisenberg, the “Bowtie Economist,” telling Realtors at a 2017 event that immigration is essential to growing the economy, and that we need at least 1 million immigrants every year to achieve the kind of growth which President Trump was promising.

(He also pointed out that cutting taxes while the economy is doing as well as it was in 2017 was not smart and could only have a short-lived effect, which is now shown to be correct.)

I was reminded of all this on Sunday night, watching a 60 Minutes segment on the Japanese economy hurting because of its historic limitation on immigration in addition to its declining birth rate.

Immigration is good, and it’s necessary to maintain and grow our economy.

The effect of restricting immigration and terrorizing immigrants by raiding businesses with immigrant work forces ends up hurting us all.

According to one website I Googled, A U.S. Department of Labor study prepared by the Bush Administration noted that the perception that immigrants take jobs away from American workers is "the most persistent fallacy about immigration in popular thought" because it is based on the mistaken assumption that there is only a fixed number of jobs in the economy. Experts note that immigrants are blamed for unemployment because

Inspection: The Most Important Step in Homebuying

A key element of every contract to buy a home is the inspection contingency, giving the buyer the opportunity to inspect the home for hidden or not-sohidden defects.

First you’ll hire a general inspector, who looks at every component of the house. Expect to pay $300 or so. Note whether the breaker box in Federal Pacific or Zinsco, which lost their UL approval due to fire risk. Determine whether to recommend a secondary inspection for asbestos (such as for popcorn ceiling), mold (if moisture has been detected), sewer scoping (if the home might have clay sewer pipes), or a more thorough electrical or plumbing inspection based on observations made by the inspector. Look the foundation issues/problems. Check all windows and doors for operability and for missing or damaged screens.

Sunset Review Recommends Against Regulating Home Inspectors Home inspectors are the last remaining professional in the real estate transaction process who is not regulated by the State of Colorado. I have long recommended that they be regulated.

Typically, home inspectors are given the lockbox code to enter a home, since the buyer’s real estate agent may not be

there to provide access. That alone should justify the regulation, including criminal background check, of inspectors by the Division of Real Estate.

However, Colorado will remain one of the few states that doesn't register or regulate home inspectors, thanks to a report by the agency which studies such things.

Olde Town named APA Colorado’s first ‘Great Place’ Award recognizes ‘thoughtful development,’ historic preservation

This October, the Colorado chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) launched its annual Great Places in Colorado award, naming Olde Town Arvada its first Great Place.

“The program provides an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the residents, leaders, officials and professionals who contribute to great communities through the planning process,” said Robin Becker, Great Places Colorado program chair. “Olde Town Arvada has been awarded due to thoughtful development, smooth transitioning between surrounding areas and the unique preservation and reuse of historic buildings and structures.”

The American Planning Association is an organization that serves as a forum for urban planning professionals. The association has run a Great Places program for 12 years, with some state chapters developing their own programs over time.

The city of Arvada made a concerted effort to earn the inaugural Colorado chapter title, creating and submitting a video along with the application. The video highlighted the historic residential districts that have “retained their character and charm” and the effectiveness of the city’s new G Line.

still, residents and business owners say there are even more things that make Olde Town such a great place to be.

For some, it’s the night scene that seems to grow livelier each year; for others, like Arvada resident Dave Boufferd, it’s the steady stream of

everyday residents stopping by in the daylight.

“It’s regulars that come here. I like that in the day, it’s an older crowd,” Boufferd said.

He, along with family members Kelly and Steve West, highlighted the restaurants and the G Line’s connection to downtown.

“I can go downtown and watch a ballgame — even now, we’re just about to go down there,” he said.

Those who work closely with the city, such as community and economic development director Ryan Stachelski, also can list a number of things to celebrate when it comes to Olde Town.

“It is an honor for the community to have been recognized in this way,” Stachelski said. “The things that make Olde Town and other Arvada neighborhoods truly great are the people and businesses who live and work there.”

Broomfield approves 2020 budget but holds off on decision to fund Jefferson Parkway

The City and County of Broomfield adopted its 2020 budget — which includes some funding proposed to go

to the Jefferson Parkway — with a sixto-three vote on Oct. 22.

However, “the money (for the Jefferson Parkway) is put in the budget as a placeholder,” said Councilmember Mike Shelton. “It doesn’t commit us

Parkway money has placeholder status in the budget to spending it — not a penny. That’s a decision we would make at some other point.”

The Jefferson Parkway is a proposed toll road intended to close the gap between state highways 93 and 128.

The Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) had hoped to break ground on its proposed tollway next year, using a requested $7.5 million total from its three government members to finish the design and contract approval process known as Request for Proposals (RFP).

Jefferson County included its $2.5 million in its 2019 budget, and Arvada approved its $2.5 million in April on a 5-1 vote.

The JPPHA would own the Jefferson Parkway, and the private partner selected would design, build, operate and maintain the parkway.

During discussion on Oct. 22, Shelton added that no matter what happens with the RFP, “it doesn’t guarantee that the project will go forward.

And withholding the money doesn’t mean the project stops, either.”

Aside from the Broomfield funding decision, another issue will further delay the project. Earlier this year, the JPPHA launched a soil study of the portion of the parkway route that will run along the former Rocky Flats site.

Analyzers found a plutonium hotspot in August, which tested for 264 pCi/g of plutonium, as opposed to the state safety limit of 50 pCi/g. 25 samples of the same area came back in October and showed much lower levels around 1.5 pCi/g.

The study will continue through the end of 2019 and will include approximately 250 samples. The JPPHA has said it will not make any decisions about the parkway’s future until all of the results are in and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has given direction on next steps.

Class is in session for Little Elementary parents At RISE nights, parents gain skills to promote learning at home

When Little Elementary School kindergarten teachers talk with parents, they don’t shy away from using words like schema, metacognition and phonemic awareness — and it doesn’t take long for parents to realize elementary school isn’t quite what it used to be.

It’s 2019, and Jeffco educators believe family engagement is more important than ever, serving as a tool to help parents understand how the academic landscape has changed for every student in every grade.

That’s why the schools have launched new strategies, like RISE nights. The events take place in seven Jeffco schools and are somewhat similar to parent-teacher conferences, though schools typically use them in addition to conferences and not as a replacement, said RISE coordinator Susie Kirvin.

Instead of teachers and parents meeting one-on-one, at RISE, all parents from the same grade go to class together, where their students’ teachers provide more information on how students are being taught certain skills. Teachers also give parents

activities or games to play with their child at home to bolster what they’re learning in the classroom.

“In the past, I’ve had a lot of questions (from parents) about math and how we teach it. When it’s one-onone, we’ve got 10 or 15 minutes,” said second grade teacher Nicole Atkins.

“This gives them a chance to see some of that language, and that’s a big part of understanding it.”

Parent Stephanie Bennetts, who has a kindergartener, second-grader and fifth-grader at Little, agreed that RISE has been a great opportunity to learn

new strategies for home.

“My kids are always coming home saying they know things because of the schema they’re learning. Education is more about independent thinking now,” she said. “We’re understanding how our kids are being taught so we can help them more easily.”

Another important piece of RISE is the data analysis portion, in which parents study test scores for their student and compare it to the grade level average.

RISE began at Little in 2018, first brought to the school by principal Julie Waage, who coordinated the event with the help of Kirvin, family liaison Cathy Paxton and many other staff members, she said.

At the Oct. 24 RISE night, an estimated 388 parents and children were in attendance, Waage said.

RISE primarily operates in Title I schools, or schools that have a high percentage of low-income families and therefore receive additional federal funding. Little Elementary was formerly a Title I school but has since had a shift in status.

Even so, when Waage stepped into her role at Little as principal, she could tell RISE was “what’s right for our families,” she said. “They wanted to learn more about the academic piece, and family engagement is a huge part of this community.”

Bennetts also highlighted the family engagement element, not only for the way it connects parents with teachers but also for the way it allows parents to connect with one another.

“We’re interacting with the other parents, and it’s an opportunity to get to know them,” she said. “It’s a great way for families to be welcomed in.”

Council deadlocks on short-term rental decision Widespread rental market largely unregulated by current Arvada laws

Like the residents who spoke, the council found itself at odds after taking several votes on whether to repeal an LDC article and replace it with a new article that would allow STRs. Under the new article, individuals could rent out the primary unit on a property or an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) to one party at a time.

To obtain an STR license, an individual would need to provide at least one additional off-street parking space and a local contact representative for complaints. The local contact would be required to respond within one hour and be located within 30 miles of the STR. HOAs could prohibit or regulate STRs.

During an Oct. 21 public hearing on whether Arvada should alter its Land Development Code (LDC) to permit short-term rentals, or STRs, councilmembers listened to back-toback citizen stories that portrayed opposite sides of the issue.

Arvada considers an STR as a rental for 30 days or less, often leased through sites like Airbnb.

Those for the issue, like resident Phillip Garnhart, spoke highly of their own experience with STRs. Garnhart inspects homes and said that he finds STR units are often in much better condition than longterm rental units. Further, by allowing STRs, Arvada will generate more tourism revenue, he said.

Those against the issue, like Michael Martinez Schifferl, told stories of neighbors who rent homes out for the weekends, often to groups who are partying and using drugs, he said. “Living next to a short-term rental is like living next to neighbors

Stricter requirements On the first vote, council members also considered an amendment to the new ordinance. The amendment would restrict STR licenses to the primary resident of a property. This would prevent someone from buying a home in Arvada purely to rent it out; individuals running STRs would be more likely to have an investment in the well-being of the house and community, city planners said.

Mayor Marc Williams proposed

adopting the ordinance with the amendment. “I don’t want to see year-round party houses,” he said, and, “I want the non-HOA areas to have the same protection that the HOA areas do.”

The motion failed on a 3-3 vote, with Williams, councilmembers Bob Fifer and Nancy Ford voting yes and others voting no. Councilmember Dot Miller was in excused absence.

“I am afraid we will set up a regulatory environment that is against the realistic environment out there,” said Mayor Pro Tem John Marriott, who voted no on the amendment.

Prohibiting marijuana use The next vote concerned whether to prohibit outdoor marijuana use on STR properties, such as in the backyard or on the front porch.

“The concern I have is the fact that the marijuana travels onto my property, where I’m enjoying the peace and quiet with my family and kids,” Fifer said.

While other activities like drinking are “confined to the backyard,” a regulation on smoking marijuana would make sense because the smoke travels to neighboring properties, he said.

Senior assistant attorney Lori Graham suggested councilmembers carefully consider the vote, saying

that city staff had found no other jurisdictions that have such a regulation, likely for legal reasons. By prohibiting marijuana use, “we could be sued for being in violation of the Colorado constitution,” she said.

The motion failed on a 4-2 vote, with Fifer and Williams voting yes and others voting no.

New council will decide In a third vote, councilmembers considered the new ordinance without any amendments.

“This (STRs) is happening in our community now, and it’s completely unregulated at this point,” Marriott said. “This ordinance allows what’s going to happen anyway, but with a layer of regulation for this to be a useful thing in our community.”

The motion failed on a 3-3, with Marriott and councilmembers David Jones and Mark McGoff voting yes, and other voting no.

City staff plans to bring the ordinance back to council for another public hearing and vote at a later date.

With elections taking place Nov. 5, the second public hearing will occur before a different council, with McGoff stepping down from council and three others — Williams, Fifer and Jones — competing to retain their seats.

City staff chose to update the LDC as part of the adoption of the Arvada Comprehensive Plan back in 2014. While the plan has had some updates over the years, it has not been comprehensively reviewed and adjusted since 2008, said planning manager Rob Smetana.

After presenting a first draft of the new code at an open house Sept. 12, city staff have gathered public feedback on the document, holding office hours for questions and allowing residents to review and comment on the draft through the LDC website at advancearvada. org.

Smetana said the new code will address questions and possibilities sometimes raised by developers, thereby eliminating the need for some meetings. Meanwhile, instead of having to attend these meetings, “the community can have input at the code level,” he said. “Hopefully

this helps streamline the process.”

One of the biggest changes to the code will be the creation of mixed-use zoning districts, which the current code does not specify, he said. An example of a mixed-use building would be a high-density housing building, which may have retail on the first floor and condos on higher floors.

The new code will also lower the height limit for new residential developments from 35 feet to 28 feet.

In commercial areas, height limits will increase up to 120 feet, depending on location and development specifications.

“We don’t have any intent of changing people’s day-to-day,” Smetana said. “Over the next five to 10 years, they might see changes in commercial development.”

The final code will be adopted in the first or second quarter of 2020, Smetana said.

Until then, there will be two public hearings at which community members can give their input, at the Nov. 19 planning commission meeting or the Dec. 9 city council meeting, both to take place at City Hall, 8101 Ralston Rd. For more information on upcoming meetings, visit arvada.org/city-

Priests abused at least 166 Colorado children, report says Roman Catholic dioceses urged to hire investigators ASSOCIATED PRESS

At least 166 Colorado children were sexually abused by 43 Roman Catholic priests over 70 years, and it took the church an average of nearly 20 years to act against clergy credibly accused of abuse, according to a report released Oct. 23 by Colorado’s attorney general.

The findings of the independent investigation show the state’s three Catholic dioceses spent decades attempting to cover up the abuse, Colorado Public Radio reports.

The months-long investigation was led by Bob Troyer, a former U.S. attorney for Colorado, and was released by state Attorney General Phil Weiser, who commissioned the project earlier this year.

The most recent abuse cases involve four children and one Denver priest in 1998. The report says the church continues to receive allegations of abuse by clergy dating back decades.

It says priests abused nine children in the 1980s and at least 11 in the 1990s.

never happens again,” Aquila said.

“My sincere hope is that this report provides some small measure of justice and healing.”

The investigation into the Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo dioceses could not rule out the possibility that clergy currently serving have been accused of sexually abusing children.

“Arguably, the most urgent question asked of our work is this: Are there Colorado priests currently in ministry who have been credibly accused of sexually abusing children?” the report said. “The direct answer is only partially satisfying: We know of none but we also know we cannot be positive there are none.”

Troyer was sharply critical of the church’s response to abuse allegations, finding that the average time it took for a church restriction against a priest credibly accused of abuse was nearly 20 years.

More than half of victims were abused after church officials were made aware that priests involved were abusers.

“Concluding from this report that clergy child sex abuse is `solved’ is inaccurate and will only lead to complacency, which will in turn put more children at risk of sexual abuse,” the report said.

Church officials opened files for the Colorado investigation. It was the latest in numerous investigations

across the U.S. into the institution’s sexual abuse crisis.

Weiser has launched a reparations program that allows child abuse victims to apply for claims. It started accepting applications in October.

The document carries a warning that it “contains graphic and disturbing accounts of the sexual abuse of children.” It names priests responsible, but does not include abuse of children by priests from other religious orders who worked in Catholic parishes.

The report urges the Colorado church to hire independent investigators for abuse complaints; adopt electronic record-keeping and a complaint tracking system; hire an outside auditor to monitor continued church reporting; and hire victims’ advocates.

Sexual abuse by Harold Robert White, a defrocked priest, has been known since shortly before his death in 2006. But the new report clarifies that White likely sexually abused at least 63 children throughout a 33-year career beginning in the 1960s.

White took a “healing” sabbatical in 1981 before returning to work in at least seven more Colorado parishes.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests issued a statement saying that it believes the numbers of Colorado abusers and victims are underreported — a possibility readily acknowledged by Troyer.

Contractors cited for not following lead-safe requirements EPA enforcement helps resolve alleged violations on home renovation projects in area STAFF REPORT

Some Denver-area contractors have been found in violation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s lead-based paint Renovation, Repair and Painting rule.

According to a news release, the rule protects the public from toxic lead hazards created by renovation activities involving lead-based paint and requires the certification of individuals and firms involved in these activities.

Contractors working on homes built before 1978 must test for lead in paint, or presume lead is present, and apply applicable lead-safe work practices to minimize the risk of toxic lead exposure.

According to the release, the EPA has reached agreements with five Denver-area contractors in the last year to settle violations of the rule: Metro Construction Inc., Colorado

Western Construction, Pappas Painting & Repair Inc., Kelly Custom Painting LLC, and Coggeshall Construction Inc. These cases resulted in more than $17,000 in penalties.

Violations included failure to obtain EPA lead-safe firm certification, failure to maintain records documenting compliance, and failure to employ lead-safe work practices when conducting renovations on pre-1978 homes, the release said.

In cases where violations resulted in contamination at a jobsite, EPA staff worked with contractors, and state and local environmental agencies, to facilitate cleanup measures to protect the public from lead exposure, the release said.

“Infants and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of lead, and the disturbance of lead-based paint in older homes and buildings is one of the most common exposure pathways,” Suzanne Bohan, director of EPA’s regional enforcement program, said in the release. “EPA is taking a close look at neighborhoods where lead-based paint is present by providing residents with information on managing risks and making sure contractors follow the requirements SEE CONTRACTORS, P10

New statewide panel tackles wildfire issues

The new Colorado Fire Commission is a “roll-up-your-sleeves” type of group.

“It’s clear to me this is a group focused on getting work done on behalf of Colorado,” said Jefferson County Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper, who is serving on the commission representing Colorado counties located on the eastern slope. “Colorado’s fire risk continues to escalate. This issue is a critical one for Colorado.”

In early June, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill, Senate Bill 19-040, establishing the Colorado Fire Commission.

The overall goal of the commission is to “bring together stakeholders from across Colorado to come up with innovative solutions to our growing fire problem,” said Lisa Pine, the Colorado Fire Commission’s administrator.

Pine added that while wildland fires are a big part of the commission’s focus, it will be also be looking at other related issues that affect residents, such as insurance rates, for one example.

The commission will “help inform how the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control grows in the future,” Pine said.

The commission consists of 32

appointed members. Six are voting members, including the director of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control and the director of the Colorado State Forest Service. Eight are non-voting ex officio members, such as someone representing real estate brokers and another representing the insurance industry. The last 24 are the appointed voting members, who represent a variety of groups including fire chiefs, volunteer and career firefighters, county sheriffs, and municipalities and special districts.

“This is an inclusive group that knows how important it is to hear different voices,” Dahlkemper said, as well as “the importance of being actionoriented.”

Senate Bill 19-040 directs the commission to look at 10 fire-related issues.

These range, for example, from “developing an accurate understanding of Colorado’s fire problems, including the number of injuries and fatalities, overall fire losses and the causes and origins of structural and wildland fires” and “assessing the capacity of the state to provide emergency fire support and technical expertise to local communities,” according to the bill’s language.

objectives.” But he added that all the members of the commission are leaders in public safety, bringing with them different areas of expertise.

The group is “looking forward to producing something that’s actionable,” Baker said, and “initiatives that will move Colorado forward.”

The commission started tackling some of the tasks during its first meeting on Oct. 9 in Glenwood Springs.

Members formed three subcommittees: statewide and regional coordination and mutual aid, funding mechanisms for large wildland fires; and improving fire data collection.

Within these subcommittees, the members will identify research that needs to be done and start working toward problem-solving, Pine said.

The subcommittees will come up with

recommendations to take to meetings of the full commission, which will take place about every three months in different locations across Colorado, for discussion and action, Pine added.

And then the commission will report its findings to the state legislature — the Wildfire Matters Review Committee, which is tasked with studying wildfire prevention and mitigation; the House’s Rural Affairs and Agriculture committee; and the Senate’s Agriculture and Natural Resources committee.

“We’re looking at Colorado as a whole,” Pine said. “It’s important that we sit in front of the legislature to show that the commission was a good idea, and that (its members) came up with real solutions to some of the fire issues we’re facing.”

Find your Ballmer Peak in Lakewood Lakewood’s own distillery to open in November

The “Ballmer Peak,” named after Steve Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft, claims there is a relationship between blood-alcohol levels and the improvement of cognitive ability.

In Lakewood, the term “Ballmer Peak” also happens to be the name of a distillery that is opening up in the city.

“The Ballmer Peak is essentially a graph when your productivity goes down when you’re drinking, and then it spikes, and then goes back down to nothing. That little spike is known as the Ballmer Peak,” said Eric Strom, a former web developer and co-owner of the upcoming Ballmer Peak Distillery. “If you get the joke, you get it. If not, it sounds like a really Colorado-y thing.”

Strom and his best friend Austin Adamson went through middle school and high school together in Arizona.

Now, the two are preparing to open up the Ballmer Peak Distillery in Lakewood. The distillery will rest at 12347 W. Alameda Parkway, and the two hope to open up sometime in November.

“We realized what an opportunity it is to provide this type of experience to this surrounding neighborhood.

We want this to be a place where someone can say `this is made in my neighborhood’,” said Adamson.

“Hopefully we can bring in the local working crowd for happy hour where (spirits) are made in their backyard.”

Strom and Adamson have had an appreciation for whiskey for quite some time, but the idea to open up a distillery didn’t hit the two until they ended up at a distillery after a brewery crawl around Golden. After back and forth talks, Strom and Adamson drilled out a business plan for their dream distillery.

“As we looked at how things are produced, we just fell in love with the industry and the creativeness around it,” said Strom.

When it comes time to open, Ballmer Peak Distillery will have five different spirits to choose from, including three rums, a white whiskey and an Australian inspired gin. Adamson has lived in Australia before, and he wants to use botanicals that are native to the country for the Australian gin.

The distillery’s menu will have a variety of drinks to choose from like “Rum-DMC,” a drink made with silver and gold rum, pineapple juice, miso syrup and a splash of Austra-

In addition to the five cases settled this year, EPA also issued 27 Notices of Noncompliance to contractors and provided educational materials to many others to promote compliance with the RRP Rule in the Denver area, the release said. These notices identify specific actions that contractors must take to ensure future compliance.

The agency will continue to assess compliance associated with recent inspections and pursue enforcement action when appropriate.

Flaws are found when you forget fundamentals

T

here is nothing new under the sun.

Have you, too, been frustrated watching the Denver Broncos’ futility over the last four years?

New coaches. New quarterbacks. New offensive coordinators. They try and they try to do new things, and nothing seems to work.

Leaving aside for a moment the fact that every time you change coaches and systems, you have to re-teach everything. It takes time and familiarity for players to get adept at systems, and each system requires a different type of player. But the simpler fact is that football, at its most basic, is warfare.

Trench warfare, to be specific. To win, you have to control the line of scrimmage. The most brilliant route combination, which puts the defenders in an impossible situation, doesn’t make any difference if your quarterback is on his backside by time the play develops. The trickiest reverse motion won’t accomplish anything if, as my buddy Matt says, your guys can’t move the other guy from point A to point B

against their will.

Sustained success is a matter of winning at the most HITTING basic part of the game.

HOME Now, in case you were wondering, I’m not a part of the sports writing staff.

There’s a point to all this, one that the Denver Broncos have been making most eloquently for the last several years: Michael Alcorn there is nothing new under the sun.

Success comes from being good at the basics.

I was recently helping my son do his math homework, and I finally understand what they’re trying to teach with the new math. It’s not new, actually — it’s about 17 extra steps to get the kids to do smaller, easier calculations and add them all together.

Instead of teaching actual calculations, we’re trying to teach students to

use the distributive property to arrive at an answer. And, it (probably) works, if the kids follow all the steps right.

AND, assuming they have the ability to do the smaller calculations right, also. Lots of different places to make a mistake. And, even doing everything right, a problem that should take 30 seconds takes four minutes. It is, in effect, teaching every single kid to use a process that the really smart do by instinct, or that the really slow have to do to get anywhere. And it still skips, or glosses over, a very basic thing: learning how to calculate.

The same can be said of one of the trends in teaching reading. The New York Times published an interesting article a year ago about the use of “Whole Language” to teach reading.

This strategy uses, well, guesswork on the part of the students, trying to piece together clues based on pictures and context, and largely ignores a great deal of the actual science behind language acquisition. And, guess where this strategy took hold and gained traction — that’s right. Col-

leges. Teacher Prep programs. The article says it’s a strategy the worst readers use to learn how to fake it.

And we’re teaching every student to use it.

Get back to the basics. I know they’re not sexy or flashy. Drilling phonics and doing math flashcards (there’s an app for that) isn’t going to get you a speaking gig or a book deal.

But it works.

These battleground states are those for which the party getting the electoral votes is uncertain. The other 38 reliably “blue” or “red” states (large or small) sit on the sidelines, relegated to spectator status — as there is no incentive for campaigns to reach out to those voters.

The National Popular Vote interstate compact changes that by guaranteeing that the winner of the popular vote across 50 states and the District of Columbia will always be awarded 270 electoral votes, and the presidency.

When every vote becomes important and counts equally, the entire country will be “battleground.” Presidential candidates will be compelled to fight as hard for votes in Colorado as they do for votes in Florida, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania — which are currently “battleground” states.

She has spent her career working with municipal and county governments, and understands how to serve Arvada. She will put residents and local businesses ahead of developers and huge companies.

Harriet opposes giving developers $30 land deals and would have developers pay for infrastructure. I urge readers to learn about Harriet Hall, to think about our city’s recent actions, and to vote by November 5 for Harriet Hall.

We can do it with no new taxes and annual, independent audits, so Coloradans can verify how the money is spent.

Deceptive CC and 1A When you look at your ballot ... don’t believe your eyes.

If the government keeps more of your tax money next year than it did this year, that’s a tax increase!

So don’t believe your eyes when you read the deceptively worded ballot descriptions that state: “without raising taxes (CC)” and “without creating any new tax (1A).” Keeping more of our tax money is a tax increase — whether the tax rate changes or not.

Now if Jeffco was seeing stellar student achievement results, high growth rates and low college remedial rates, I would say it was money well spent. Unfortunately, none of that is happening. For the second year in a row, Jeffco’s students have learned less than their peers around the state.

Most Jeffco students aren’t learning a year’s worth of information. In fact, 75% of Jeffco’s third graders who qualify for free and reduced lunch did not meet expectations in English.

As her campaign manager, I want to tell people a little about Harriet that they won’t hear from anywhere else.

Harriet has incredible stamina and commitment that puts me to shame.

She is smart, thoughtful and kind.

Harriet does nothing halfway. She commits herself to knowing the details of every issue, but is not afraid to ask if there is something she doesn’t know.

During the campaign there have been a few people attempt to discredit her on social media. Their comments have all been 100% untrue and some were very hurtful and hateful. When the rest of the team wants to fight back and respond in kind, Harriet just waves it off and moves on. I am proud and honored to be a member of Hall for City Hall team.

Wings of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Research had its most successful event yet, raising more than $80,000 for ongoing research at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.

“This was our biggest and most successful benefit to date and we are enormously grateful to everyone who not only attended but gave so generously to fund the pancreatic cancer research at the University of Colorado Cancer Center,” Maureen Shul, executive director of Wings of Hope, said in a news release.

This year’s seventh annual Evening of Hope, the signature fundraiser for the growing foundation, was Sept. 28 at the Glenmoor Country Club in Cherry Hills Village. More than 300 people, the largest crowd to attend An Eve-

ning of Hope, filled the courtyard on a fall evening for drinks and appetizers before enjoying an evening of survival and medical breakthrough.

“This was such a special evening with three courageous survivors sharing their stories and four of the most renowned physicians when it comes to pancreatic cancer sharing the research and treatment progress being made at the CU Cancer Center, Anschutz Medical Campus,” Shul said in the release.

Speakers included renowned physicians and grant recipients Dr. Wells Messersmith, Dr. Marco Del Chiaro, Dr. Sana Karam and Dr. Richard Schulick, director of the CU Cancer Center, whose ongoing and critical cutting-edge work is funded in large part by the yearround efforts of Wings of Hope.

“It was incredibly moving for me to see so many wonderful people come together to support this effort,” said Shul, who founded Wings of Hope in 2012 after losing two of her family members to the disease.

Survivalists offers range of options for uncertain future

astle Rock resident Kiki Bandilla wanted to live a selfreliant life — the kind of life, as she describes it, in which she could sustain herself without depending on “institutions or grocery stores or medical facilities.”

“We get really upset if our internet is down. We don’t know what to do if we don’t have our car,” she said. “I like knowing how to make these things work. You have to deal with your own emergencies.”

The pursuit brought her to the Self Reliance Expo in Denver about five years ago, and she found herself, reluctantly, walking into unknown territory.

“I was thinking: ‘What is this going to be?’ I had placed a label that ‘self-reliant’ meant conspiracy theorist,” she said. “And I got there and thought it was the coolest thing in the world. At that point, I developed my own definition of self-reliance.”

Fast-forward to 2019, and Bandilla is a well-known figure in the Colorado survivalist community, having purchased the expo in 2017 and transformed it into the National Self-Reliance Project.

Through the project, Bandilla encourages thousands to learn more about emergency preparedness, survival skills and living a simpler lifestyle.

LIFE

That lifestyle has attracted all kinds of people, Bandilla said, but it’s also been known to attract a good deal of negative attention.

“People who don’t understand think these are the crazies stockpiling for the end of the world,” she said. “We need to throw away the labels. The people in this world are smart, normal people who have just taken different steps to protect themselves.”

Ready for ‘the bad times’ Survivalists and preppers are ready for everyday emergencies: blizzards, fires or even just a wrong turn on a hiking trip.

But make no mistake — many of them are also ready for a solar flare that takes out the electrical grid or a bioterrorism attack resulting in a nationwide pandemic.

“There could be all kinds of disasters: a meteor hit, a super volcano, a massive earthquake,” said Drew Miller, a prepper from the Denver area. “What you really need is a group. You’ve got to be able to protect yourself.”

Miller owns Fortitude Ranch, a survival community at which members can vacation during what he calls “the good times” and go for protection in “the bad times,” when a crisis hits. The ranch has locations in both West Virginia and Colorado, the latter of which opened six years ago.

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS When an emergency hits, everyone should have some level of prepper knowledge to see them through, said Kiki Bandilla with the National Self-Reliance Project.

Here are some of the top tips from preppers and survivalists: “The first rule of prepping is: don’t tell anyone you’re a prepper. The most important thing is that, whatever supplies you have, they’re no good if you can’t protect yourself.” — Drew Miller, Fortitude Ranch “Our bodies are comprised of 50-70% water; one simply cannot survive without it. Learn how to build a charcoal filtering system, and purchase a variety of filtration straws and purification pills in advance.”

— Linda Cearley, Mile High Prepper “You can’t do this overnight; it’s a process. There’s so much information out there and great how-to videos, and there’s no better learning than doing a hands-on training. When we have the next self-reliance expo, come to our expo.”

f you were raised Catholic or have ever been to the any of the historic cathedrals all over the world, you know that altars to saints were and are a part of life for the faithful.

However, it’s safe to say that subjects of local artist Shirlee Miyake’s new exhibit on display at the Thornton Arts COMING and Culture Center ATTRACTIONS won’t be added to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica anytime soon. Entitled Sinners and Recovering Catholics, the exhibit features altars to 17 figures, both historic and contemporary.

“I wanted someClarke Reader thing less gory than zombies walking around. Something family friendly, like the movie “Coco,” Miyake explained. “I tried to find iconic figures that people would recognize.

I wanted diverse people and cultures represented.”

Figures who received an altar vary from Sacagawea and Elvis Presley to Aretha Franklin and Anthony Bourdain.

“We thought this body of work would be a great one to have in correlation with our Dia de Los Muertos event,” said Jesse Jimenez, arts and culture coordinator with the city. “The day is a whole celebration around people coming together to honor and remember our loved ones. And like the exhibit, the holiday has undertones of Catholicism to it.”

The city’s Dia de Los Muertos exhibit will go from 4 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the center and will feature food vendors, interactive arts activities and Miyake will be on hand as well.

“There’s been a resurgence of interest in the holiday and our event has grown over the last three years,” Jimenez said. “At our first event we had only 20 people and last year we had about 250.”

Each altar Miyake made is incredibly detailed, featuring a variety of elements from the person’s lives, in addition to a drawing of the figure by the artist. For example, Bourdain’s altar includes a motorcycle, cigars, beer and coins from countries he visited as part of his travels. The details of each altar not only reflect Miyake’s dedication to the craft, but also reflect the humanity of the icons.

“I wanted people with flaws, because we all have flaws. We all want to be better, but that doesn’t always happen because life happens,” she said.

Bandilla likewise sees a range of people attracted to the project and expo, especially baby boomers and millennials, with young people accounting for her fastest-growing demographic.

“They’re born into this world where everything is so fast. It’s finding that balance,” she said.

How to get started It’s easy for those in the Denver area to learn more, Bandilla said, with the expo planning a date for 2020 and no shortage of resources available online, from full-blown websites to Facebook groups and pages.

Meeker, Colorado, resident Linda Cearley runs one of those Facebook pages, @milehighprepper, having been inspired to share tips and news with anyone looking to bolster his or her survival skills, she said.

“Most of my followers come from both cities and rural areas,” she said.

A life-sized photo of a pleasantlooking man surrounded by flowers welcomes the visitor at the entrance to Denver Art Museum’s “Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature,” the major exhibit of more than 100 paintings by the French impressionist that opened Oct. 21 and will remain through the holidays until Feb. 2.

Clearly a don’t-miss for art lovers, this is an exhibit with works painted in many locations (Monet loved to travel) and in a palette that is bright and light — even in a snowy scene in wintry Norway. It speaks to anyone who can see it.

Monet loved any and all flowers and eventually designed and planted his own extensive garden at Giverny in northern France, the locale for many of those lovely paintings of water lilies we associate with him.

But this exhibit, organized with the new Museum Barberini, in Potsdam, Germany, also includes glimpses of the countryside, as well as towns, across Europe, such as “The Strada Romana at Bordighera,” 1884.

by Maruma Art Park in Japan, which urged that a work by his mentor, Boudin, also be shown. Loans from many sources include “Haystacks, Snow Effect” from the Shelburn Museum; “House Seen Through the Roses,” from the collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (“House of the Customs Officer” 1882) and “Path in the Wheat Fields,” 1882, from the Denver Arts Museum’s treasured half-dozen Monet paintings, bequeathed by Frederic C. Hamilton.

This will be the only showing in the United States.

As the exhibit’s title suggests, Monet, throughout his life, was tuned into the many moods and versions of nature and constantly sought out new experiences — in the garden, at the seaside, on country roads and in small towns and larger cities. How does the sunlight frame that old homestead today? Or that grove of trees or expanse of lilies? How does light filter through leaves — or reflect off surf at the sea’s edge?

color and texture, the blending of brushstrokes, rendering of light and shadow … One can almost summon up sounds and scents with a focus on a given scene.

The installation of the Claude Monet paintings is greatly enhanced, I think, by the choice of deep, intense colors for the gallery walls: burgundy, deep blue, intense green …

The background color makes even a small, subtle painting pop! The viewer should understand how daring his approach to painting was in 19th-century Europe.

“Throughout his career, Monet was

indefatigable in his exploration of the different moods of nature, seeking to capture the spirit of a certain place and translating its truth onto the canvas,” Daneo commented.

The exhibit shows Monet’s eventual focus on certain subjects, such as haystacks, water lilies, bridges — as well as the eventual lack of humans in the scenes.

Through intense planning and precise choice of planting materials, Monet, an expert gardener, created the surroundings he wanted at Giverny and translated them to canvas in his later years, working

Monet often painted the same subject at different times of day or in different lighting conditions in order to capture its essence. with as many as seven gardeners at one point.

The exhibit fills three large galleries — about 20,000 square feet — and invites leisurely strolling and turns for repeat visits to some works where a connection seems apparent. A visitor should allow time to stop, sit, stare and return to that garden again … which may be difficult, because tickets are selling out and there will be more people than would be ideal for a relaxed visit. Be sure to line up a ticket before you go — it’s sold out for the next few weeks!

In the spring, the exhibit will travel to the Museum Barberini. A large, colorful catalogue is available at the Denver Art Museum shop.

What is El Día de los Muertos?

El Día de los Muertos — or Day of the Dead — is an ancient tradition with roots belonging to the indigenous cultures in Mexico who observed harvest season with rituals that embraced mortality and celebrated life after death.

Spanish conquistadors eventually arrived, and in attempts to convert the indigenous peoples to Catholicism, they moved the dates of the celebration to coincide with the Christian beliefs of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 1 and 2, respectively, when it is believed the spirits of the dead visit their families.

Today, El Día de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico and parts of the south and central Americas, as well as in the U.S.

Baile folklórico — traditional Mexican folkloric dances — performed to live mariachi music is one of the highlights of Olinger Crown Hill’s Día de los Muertos Celebration, which takes place on Nov. 2.

Altars are built to honor and remember a person who has passed away. Altars are personalized, but generally include photos of the loved one, candles, fresh

marigolds and usually some sort of personalized item the person enjoyed when he or she was alive. Sometimes, washcloth and water will be placed on an altar so the ancestors can clean up after their long journey back.

Pan de muerto is a type of bread made once a year specifically for Día de los Muertos and it is usually placed on the altar as an offering to their ancestors.

Sugar skulls are a pre-Columbian presence on the altars and their purpose is to represent duality of life and death.

Olinger Crown Hill will be building a traditional altar, and there will be a person explaining what the altar is and its different elements. Pan de muerto will be available for sampling.

The main entertainment will be live mariachi music and baile folklórico performances, which is traditional Mexican folklore dancing. Sol De Mi Tierra Mariachi will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The mariachi band will be accompanied by Colorado Fiesta Dancers from noon to 1 p.m.

Additional festivities include a bounce house and children’s activities, food trucks and artesian vendors.

Pomona football wins 5A top-10 match-up against Columbine

ARVADA — It wasn’t easy, but Pomona set up a winner-take-all situation next week for the Class 5A Metro West League title.

The Panthers — No. 7 in the CHSAANow.com 5A football rankings — withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by No. 4 Columbine on Oct. 24 at the North Area Athletic Complex. A 47-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds was missed allowing Pomona to take a 34-33 victory over the Rebels.

“Our kids fought and fought. We are still making mistakes, but when you start eight sophomores you are going to make some mistakes,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said of his young squad. “We are going to keep getting better. That’s all we’ve been talking about.”

Pomona (6-3, 4-0 in 5A Metro West League) faces rival Ralston Valley (9-0, 4-0) with the conference title on the line next week. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, for what will be in essence a league championship game.

“It feels great. It’s the way it should be,” Madden said facing Ralston Valley in the league finale next week with a ton at stake. “A rivalry game with the league title on the line, state seeding on the line and bragging rights for a long time. We are looking forward to it.”

sion of the fourth quarter a comeback seemed to be out of reach.

However, Columbine had a 24-yard touchdown pass from Holliday to senior Tanner Hollens on a fourth-down play with 5:18 left to make the score 34-27. Pomona was forced to punt with just over three minutes to play and the Rebels found the end zone again.

“Columbine put up a heck of a fight,” said Pomona junior receiver Jack Pospisil, who had a 36-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

“It was a fun game.”

Columbine senior Braeden Hogan scored on a bizarre play where it was ruled that Holliday fumbled the ball backward from the 1-yard line and Hogan picked it to score with 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Madden said he was surprised that the Rebels decided to kick the extrapoint instead of going for a 2-point conversion. However, the PAT sailed wide to keep the Panthers in the lead 34-33.

Still, Columbine recovered the ensuing onside kick. The Rebels got down to Pomona’s 32-yard line, but the lastsecond field goal attempt was wide.

“It just feels so good,” Moretti said after the Panthers’ fifth straight win.

“We struggled early in the season, but we’ve gotten better each week and we believe in each other. We beat a really good Columbine team. We know we are taking the right steps.”

It was a seesaw first half in the top10 match-up.

Ralston Valley has remarkable postseason softball run

AURORA — A postseason berth, let alone a run into the Class 5A softball state semifinals looked nearly impossible for Ralston Valley a month before the state tournament.

Starting shortstop Jordan West was lost before the start of the season due to knee surgery. Ralston Valley was on a six-game losing streak before entering 5A Jeffco League play and then lost its opener to Pomona, giving the Mustangs a 3-12 record on Sept. 17.

“It was a little rocky, but once league came we started coming on really strong,” Ralston Valley coach Wendy Davies said. “It’s just a team that works so hard. It’s a team that keeps fighting.”

Ralston Valley fought to an eventual 5-3 league record to finish tied for second and clawed into the 32-team regional playoffs as the No. 31 seed.

A successful trip to Grand Junction snagged Ralston Valley a secondplace finish in its regional tournament to punch the Mustangs’ ticket to the 16-team state tournament Oct. 25 and 26.

“There was just a point in our sea-

son where we knew something had to change,” Ralston Valley junior Laney Clark said. “We needed to work harder, come together and turn our season around. We did that and I’m proud of where we started. It was pretty amazing that we came this far.”

How far did Ralston Valley go? The No. 16 seed in the state tournament made it all the way to the 5A state semifinals. The Mustangs’ remarkable postseason run ended with a 13-4 loss to eventual state runner-up Fossil Ridge on Oct. 26 at Aurora Sports Park.

The Mustangs were the story Day 1 of the 5A state tournament. Ralston Valley upset No. 1 seed Rock Canyon 6-3 in the opening round and kept it going by knocking off No. 9 Loveland 4-1 in the state quarterfinals.

“Coming in as the No. 16 seed and having to play the No. 1 seed in Rock Canyon it was obviously really intimidating,” Clark admitted. “We knew we had to work really, really hard to win and that is what we did. It was super awesome we were able to do it. Nobody really expected that from us.”

Ralston Valley football remains undefeated with shutout versus Lakewood

ARVADA — It took awhile for Ralston Valley football to warm up in the 30-degree weather Oct. 24 at the North Area Athletic Complex.

However, a 28-point second quarter by the Mustangs — No. 2 in the CHSAANow.com Class 5A football rankings — heated up Ralston Valley enough to stay undefeated on the season. Ralston Valley took a 42-0 victory over Lakewood.

“We needed to pick it up. We needed more energy,” Ralston Valley senior linebacker Braden Siders said about the Mustangs’ slow start. “Once we got that we were good.”

Lakewood had a solid opening drive, but the Mustangs’ defense eventually stiffened. The Tigers missed a 44-yard field goal. Ralston Valley’s opening drive went 13-plays, but a pair of holding penalties and a missed 40-yard field goal kept the game scoreless.

“We stopped ourselves on that first drive,” Ralston Valley senior quarterback Walker Brickle said. “We tightened ourselves up and kind of went rolling from there.”

Brickle stayed hot after throwing for nearly 300 yards against then top-ranked Columbine last week in a 24-23 victory for the Mustangs. Brickle tossed three touchdown passes in the span of six minutes in the second quarter after the scoreless first

Brickle used a lot of his deep receiving core hitting four different players on his four touchdown passes on the night. JJ Galbreath, Jack Hestera and Devin McNearny had touchdown catches from Brickle on three straight touchdown drives in the second quarter.

“It helps us when it comes to teams scouting us to show that we have multiple weapons,” Brickle said of the

variety of offensive options. “Everyone really showed up today and the line gave me time to throw.”

Ralston Valley senior running back Chase Wilson closed out the first half with a 1-yard touchdown run and successful 2-point conversion run with 11 seconds before halftime to give the Mustangs a 28-0 lead at halftime.

The formula Ralston Valley (9-0, 4-0 in 5A Metro West League) has been using all season continued to

work against Lakewood (5-4, 1-3). The Mustangs’ stellar defense forced three straight 3-and-outs by the Tigers to give Ralston Valley great field position in Lakewood territory.

“The defense is really playing great.

I’m so proud of them,” Brickle said.

The Mustangs’s defense is allowing just over 10 points per game and has two shutout victories.

Ralston Valley kept it going in the second half with a spectacular touchdown catch by Wilson for 32-yards.

A 10-yard touchdown run by Tyler Roybal with 8 minutes left in the third quarter induced a running clock for the remainder of the game.

The Mustangs close out the regular season next week against rival Pomona (6-3, 4-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at NAAC. The game will decide the conference title.

“The job is not done,” Wilson said.

“We’ve got to lock in next week and get in the film room tomorrow. Pomona is a great team. It’s going to be a dogfight. We can’t come out flat.”

Lakewood wraps up its regular season next Friday night at Mullen.

The Tigers were No. 20 in RPI before the loss to Ralston Valley, so Lakewood is still in good position to make the 32team state tournament field.

It was the deepest playoff run for Ralston Valley since back-to-back 5A state runner-ups in 2008 and 2009.

“I think this was one of the toughest years coaching wise and the girls really had to fight hard from where they came,” said Davies the only softball coach Ralston Valley has ever had since the school opened its doors in 2000. “To come this far was huge. It was a great year for them.”

Ralston Valley graduates just two seniors from this year’s squad that finished the season with a 12-17 record.

With ultra talented pitcher Ashley West back for her junior campaign, along with her older sister back from injury the Mustangs has a chance to make another title run.

“It will make a big difference for us,” Davies said of having Jordan West return from her knee injury.

“She was a very strong leader on the bench. She was at every practice. It will be really nice to have her back on the field.”

LAKEWOOD Lakewood’s softball team made its first return to the 5A state tournament in more than a decade. The Tigers’ state playoff run ended Oct. 25 with a first-round loss to eventual state runner-up Fossil Ridge.

“We haven’t been here in a while. It was great when we punched our ticket at regionals to get here and for the girls to get some exposure,” Lakewood coach Dannielle Engler said following the Tigers’ 9-5 season-ending loss. “It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but it’s great for our program. This will help for next year and years to come.”

The Tigers finished with a 19-8 record with a young squad that featured sophomore pitcher Destiny Martinez and a young core of power-hitters led by junior Abigail Swartz and sophomore Reagan Medina.

“They gelled really well this year,” Engler said. “We are young, so just improving over the off-season and playing more together.”

It was his 18th touchdown run of the season. Hollens actually threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Holliday in the second quarter that tied things up 14-14.

However, Pomona sophomore running back Dominick Nichols found the end zone for the second time in the first half to give the Panthers a 21-14 lead at halftime. The budding star running back had a trio of touchdown runs in the win.

“He (Nichols) is getting better and better,” Madden said. “The o-line is getting better and better. That combination is getting us better.”

Coach Brenna Millikan’s squad finished the season with a 13-14 record.

The Wildcats battled after a 5-game losing streak early in the season. AWest had a 5-game winning streak before eventually upsetting Castle View twice in the regional tournament to grab a ticket to the state tournament for the third straight year.

D’EVELYN D’Evelyn had a similar state experience as Wheat Ridge. The Jaguars rolled to an easy 16-1 win over No. 6 seed Mead. D’Evelyn belted four home runs and put in a 9-run fourth inning.

The Jaguars couldn’t match the offensive output of eventual state champion Erie in the quarterfinals.

The Tigers score multiple runs in the first, third, fourth and seventh inning on the way to a 10-4 victory.

The loss was the end of one of the best softball players to come out of D’Evelyn Senior Peyton Balbin was the Jaguars starting catcher for four season and finished with a .451 career batting average with 114 RBIs and 139 career hits.

Columbine has lost back-to-back 1-point games in heartbreaking fashion. The Rebels got edged by No. 2 Ralston Valley last week 24-23 on a last-minute touchdown and 2-point conversion. Columbine is back at NAAC next week. The Rebels finish off its regular season against Arvada West on Halloween night Thursday.
