A background in service I was in my freshman year of college when the twin towers went down, and that really shaped my generation.

When I went on to law school, one of my professors spoke about their experience in the JAG Corps (Judge Advocate General’s Corps), and it seemed rather exciting. I joined the military while I was still in law school, in 2008.

In the JAG Corps, we were legal advisors to the command, so we had some functions that are similar to citizens’ lawyers. I now work at a firm based out of Texas in employment law and insurance defense.

Choosing to write I wasn’t intending to become an author. My sister’s an elementary school teacher in North Carolina and she

invited me to her school for Veteran’s Day. The kids wanted to know, when I had been a soldier, what I ate, where I slept, even what a rank is. I was trying to explain what brigade I was with, what division I was with, and I realized I needed to give the kids the language so we could have a conversation about, ‘what does a soldier do in a single day?’

I had no idea how to write a book, but I knew that civilians needed to understand what we’re trying to support, and veterans also needed to engage civilians. The book does that.

A new mission It’s very hard for soldiers to reintegrate after serving. As veterans, we’re not looking for sympathy. We’re looking for understanding. The book actually helps adults as well as kids, because if we don’t have a common language to use, we end up dividing farther and farther apart. We don’t engage. So we can all get behind, `we should communicate.’ I’m a veteran who has been without a mission for a while. This kind of became a mission, and it feels great to have a mission again.

Starting this month, Jefferson County’s Severe Weather Shelter Network opened its doors with plans to continue hosting the homeless throughout the winter.

Formed in 2013, the network is a nonprofit made up of community groups and agencies through which local churches provide overnight shelter from winter conditions.

As the county shifts into its coldest months, the nonprofit encourages those in need to register with the network.

Step 1: Seasonal registration Each winter season, individuals are asked to complete a one-time registration with the Severe Weather Shelter Network. The registration process promotes safety for guests and volunteers, said network executive director Lynn Ann Huizingh.

Registration occurs in-person at the following sites: Giving Heart, 4358 S. Broadway; Mean Street Ministry, 1380 Ammons St.; The Action Center, 8755 W. 14th Ave.; Jeffco Human Services, 900 Jefferson County Pky.; The Rising Church, 7500 W.57th Ave.; Community Table, 8555 W. 57th Ave. Location hours are posted at swshelternetwork.com/homeless.

Those who register will receive the network’s hotline number, which they can call on winter weather nights for more information about specific locations.

Step 2: Nightly roster The network encourages guests to add their name to rosters for specific shelters every night that they would like to stay.

After first-time registration, guests can call the hotline number during the day to put their name on the roster for that night and learn more about warming site locations.

Overnight locations open when the temperature is projected to drop below 32 degrees with wet conditions, or 20 degrees with dry conditions, based on morning forecasts.

“We have a capacity of about 35 at each of our host sites, and we hardly ever go over that,” Huizingh said. “We try not to turn anyone away.”

While the network does not host families with children, the organization can also connect families with other resources, she said.

Volunteers The network is seeking volunteers to assist with tasks such as preparing meals, serving as drivers and supervising the shelters overnight.

The best candidates to volunteer, particularly for overnight shifts, are those who have flexible schedules, such as individuals who are retired or work from home, Huizingh said Additionally, the nonprofit would like to partner with businesses that could provide vans for temporary use on shelter nights. The vans will be used to transport guests from the warming site to the shelter site.

Huizingh encouraged potential volunteers to explore the possibility and do away with preconceived notions.

“The suburban homeless community is different than the downtown culture. It’s also only 35 people, and there’s room for everyone to spread out a bit,” she said. “This is about welcoming people into this space. If people have any interest in volunteering at all, we would love to talk to them.”

Before Putting Your Home on the Market, Take Care of the ‘Little’ (& Low-Cost) Things!

I show a lot of homes to a lot of buyers each week, and I’m shocked at some of the conditions I see, many of which could have been taken care of at little or no cost. Here’s a list of the “Dirty Dozen.” Do any of them ring a bell for you?

1. Unwashed windows. No home should be put on the market without washing the windows inside and out. I’ve seen homes with great views, but the dirty windows make a bigger impression than the views! (I can recommend window washers.)

2. Damaged window screens.

With our strong winds and sun, window screens don’t last forever. As they age, the damage from wind and sun really gets the attention of buyers, even more so than those dirty windows. And replacing screen material is less expensive than you might think. I’ve taken mine to Ace Hardware and had them rescreened for ridiculously little money.

I also tell my sellers to remove their window screens, labeling them with masking tape, and storing them in the basement or garage. (Still repair the badly damaged ones!) Even if screens are not damaged, removing them is itself like washing the windows.

3. Home is cluttered! We all have too much “stuff” in our homes, so selling your home is a great time to thin out your possessions. Rita and I aren’t think-

ing of selling our home, but she’s on a decluttering kick, which I love and support! Most things go to Goodwill or the Christian Action Guild or the Habitat ReStore. Others go on Nextdoor.com as giveaways or “for sale.” (Call or email me if you’d like some great wooden shelves which cost $600 new but which we want to give away now that we have donated most of our books to a book drive!)

Some things, naturally, go in our trash can or get added to our box truck the next time we do a dump run for a client.

5. Yard needs clean-up. We all have bushes that need trimming or seasonal cutting back, or weeds in our gravel areas that need pulling or killing.

This is especially important in the front yard, where they can make a bad first impression. If your yard needs a largescale fall cleanup, I recommend the Vietnamese-American family which performs that service for Rita and me. It costs more, but it’s worth it!

6. Carpet needs stretching. This is a task for which you need to hire a vendor , but nothing generates a bad impression quite like ripples in wall-to-wall carpeting. It will set you back a few hundred dollars, but it's money well spent. If the carpet itself is old and worn and terribly out of style, consider replacing it. The few thousand dollars you

7. Home is dark. A bright, well-lit home sells! I applaud you for replacing your incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, but CFLs are obsolete now that LED bulbs are available and inexpensive. Last week I went to Batteries + Bulbs, and they were having a special on 60-watt equivalent LEDs — I left with 12 LED soft-white bulbs (same shape as traditional bulbs) for $4! Even if you pay more at Lowe’s or Home Depot, go ahead and splurge. I replaced all my home bulbs with LEDs, including the can lights in my vaulted ceilings.

LEDs last forever, so it’s nice to know I won’t have to pull out my 8-foot step ladder again anytime soon! Many LED bulbs are now dimmable, too.

CFLs take a while to reach their full brightness, but LEDs are instant on. In my garage I’m replacing two 8-foot fluorescent fixtures (drawing 300 watts) with a couple 2’ x 2’ flush mount LED fixtures which draw 9.2 watts each and provide equivalent lighting. I splurged on a motion sensor, so every time I enter the garage, the lights turn on until five minutes after I leave. Sweet!

Also, take down or open your drapes and shades to maximize sunlight.

8. Too many personal things. This is rule #1 of staging a home for sale.

Your family pictures, snapshots and refrigerator notes may make your house a home for you, but they create a distraction for visitors. Take them down.

9. Too much furniture. I showed a home last Sunday where the furniture had been thinned — but it was crammed into the garage. We couldn’t even enter the garage. Looking through the door, my buyer muttered “small garage.” In fact it just looked small because it was so full. (This is a basic principle of staging — a full closet, book shelves or whatever conveys a lack of space, whereas a partially full closet, etc., conveys abundant space.) The stuff that you know you’ll take with you could go in a storage unit or into a POD. For the rest, see item #3 above. Note: I know a storage place that gives the first month free without requiring a contract, if they have lots of vacancies in a particular size unit.

10. Toilet lids open. Closing your toilet lids is easy! Good Feng Shui, too.

11. Plug-in odor devices in use. Every time I see one of these, it makes me wonder what the seller is covering up.

Smoke? Cat smell? The “pleasant” smell is also unpleasant to many, myself included, so why use them?

12. Alarm system is armed. Some showing instructions include disarming and re-arming an alarm system. Do you want buyers to think your street has a burglary problem? In most cases, it doesn’t, so why raise the question?

Sunset Review Recommends Adding Dispute Resolution to HOA Office Advocates of homeowner rights (like myself) were disappointed when Gov. Polis vetoed the bill that would have retained licensing of Community Association Managers. Now, the Colorado Office of Policy, Research and Regulatory Reform (COPRRR) has released its 2019 Sunset Review Report concerning the

HOA Information and Resource Center.

COPRRR recommended continuing the HOA Information and Resource Center through 2025 and directing the Center to implement a dispute resolution process for HOA complaints, which it lacks now.

A bill to that effect would have to be passed in 2020 and signed by Gov. Polis.

Crosswalk projects would promote safety but alter aesthetics Council gives feedback on W. 57th Ave., Grandview plans

Crosswalks near the G Line and Arvada K-8 could become safer, and look much different, under a new Arvada pilot program.

Arvada transportation planning engineer John Firouzi and pedestrian coordinator Adam Lind presented the traffic division’s two Pedestrian Safety Pilot Projects to city council on Oct. 14. The division was seeking council’s feedback on the plan, with hopes of finalizing the project in November, Lind said.

The pilot project, called “Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper,” will transform crosswalks at two locations to test if the new updates might be effective at other Arvada crosswalks.

If those crosswalks were updated in the traditional, less-cost-effective way, “you could be waiting three, four years,” Lind said. But through the project, update costs would be reduced so the city could afford to redo crosswalks more quickly, without having to postpone other projects.

The traffic division chose W. 57th Avenue between Balsam Street and Glen Ellen Drive, at which pedestrians

At the Arvada K-8 location, the plan proposes restriping the crosswalk, extending the curbs and lining them with flexible delineator tubes. The new design would reduce crossing distance by approximately 16 feet, improve pedestrian visibility and prevent unlawful street-parking, Lind said.

The renovation would cost an estimated $8,000, as opposed to traditional

curb extensions, which would cost around $117,000, he said.

At the G Line location, the plan calls for updates to crosswalks at the Grandview/Webster intersection, as they are currently “not the most visible,” Lind said.

The crosswalks, made of brick and concrete, would be replaced by artificial brick crosswalks. The new crosswalks would be lined with white paint, and planters would be added to the medians to “bring attention to drivers,” he said.

To accomplish this, designers plan to eliminate some of the drop-off/pick-up space for G Line riders, including two of eight short-term parking spaces at the intersection.

The estimated cost is $25,000, with planners saying they have yet to calculate how much more a traditional option would cost.

Mayor Pro Tem John Marriott questioned whether the artificial brick would fit in with the Olde Town aesthetic, especially after the crosswalk has experienced wear and tear. “We want to protect the quality,” he said.

Firouzi responded that many other cities, including Denver, have artificial brick crosswalks. He added that using alternate materials or methods would not only be more expensive initially, but would be much more expensive to

replace if damaged.

During the pilot period, the team will monitor “how much of that wear and tear is going to impact the aesthetic, and then what the cost would be” to keep the crosswalks looking as intended, he said.

Should council approve the final plan next month, the new crosswalks would be installed in early 2020. The program will then run for six months, with the city gathering feedback on how the new crosswalks are performing. At the end of the pilot period, city council will decide if it would like to install similar projects at other sites.

City staff members plan to solicit public feedback through several methods, they said, including an online survey. Project planners will also use pedestrian counts and video footage to decide if the changes are an improvement.

Council member David Jones said he admired the effort to promote safety, but he requested more qualitative measures to determine success. The team agreed to brainstorm additional ways to gauge effectiveness.

“We’re very aware that this is something new and different for the community,” Lind said. “If we see that a lot more vehicles are yielding to pedestrians than before, we would consider this a success.”

Applications for $1 million innovation fund now open to students Jeffco staff and high schoolers can submit ideas through Oct. 28

For two years now the Jeffco Innovation Acceleration Fund has invited school district staff to apply for a portion of a $1 million fund to support creative ideas. And this year, thanks to some consideration and “a little nudge from our student intern,” district leaders have decided to open up the contest to high school students, too, said chief strategy officer Tom McDermott.

Through Oct. 28, students in grades nine through 11 and any Jeffco staff member can apply for the Innovation Acceleration Fund. The district will accept up to 1,000 student applications and an unlimited number of staff applications.

The annual $1 million Innovation Acceleration Fund is funded annually

by Jefferson County Public Schools.

The ongoing funding was first set aside by Superintendent Jason Glass and the Board of Education, who wanted “to encourage the solutions that we know exist within our incredible staff,” McDermott said.

Applicants can submit a `Small Idea,’ with an estimated budget of $5,000 or less; a `Medium Idea,’ with a

“We have not said that X amount will go to students and X to staff.

We want to see what kind of ideas come out,” McDermott said. “The requirement we have is that the idea is something that will improve student learning experiences. We were intentionally vague in not wanting to squash any innovation that exists out there.”

The best ideas will align with Jeffco Generations, the district’s strategic plan, he said. The plan emphasizes

authentic learning experiences and encourages teachers to find creative, perhaps-nontraditional ways to communicate course material.

Previous winners have included a program to reengage teenagers who have dropped out of Jeffco schools; support for South Jeffco Children’s Theatre; and training and equipment to several robotics clubs, McDermott said.

After all ideas are submitted on Oct. 28, the first round of community voting will open Oct. 29. Round 1 runs through Nov. 8 and invites any school community member to login to the voting platform with his or her Jeffco Public Schools email.

During the voting process, ideas are paired up, with voters asked to

District leaders will choose ideas with the highest votes from each articulation area and collaborate with the innovators to create a more specific budget and plan. Once the plans are finalized, a second round of community voting will take place Jan. 10-24, after which district leaders will make their final decisions.

“I don’t know of anywhere else in the country that is willing to fund student ideas to improve student experiences,” McDermott said. “We’re in the vanguard of school districts leading this, so I’m really excited about that.”

Student-run clinic offers primary care to the uninsured Grand opening to be held Oct. 30

When most health clinics are closing for the day, at 6 p.m., the physicians at the student-run Community Table Health Clinic begin filling out charts and looking over appointment lists, prepared to complete a variety of tasks: suturing minor injuries, running blood tests or prescribing antibiotics for an ear infection.

But what’s most notable about the clinic isn’t its nighttime hours; it’s the fact that the clinic, located at Arvada’s Community Table, serves those who do not have health insurance.

Community Table executive director Sandy Martin brainstormed the idea of an on-site clinic. The clinic would serve the uninsured individuals living in the organization’s service area and could complement the services already available at Community Table, such as the food bank.

“I had seen a need in assisting our clients with basic healthcare because they didn’t have access. They end up in emergency rooms, which is just not financially effective,” she said. “The seed of the idea came from me, and then others really expanded the effort.”

Located at 8555 W. 57th Ave., the clinic partners with Red Rocks Community College to provide care.

The clinic sees patients ages 18 and older. Parents with children under 18 that need care are recommended to go to the Carin’ Clinic at 5150 Allison St., which provides similar care for those under 18.

Medical students in Red Rocks’ physician assistant program see clinic patients under the supervision of practicing physicians.

The clinic offers general primary care services for those who have a medical concern that is not an emergency and not life-threatening. Those who are unsure whether they can be treated by the clinic can call and schedule an appointment, and will be referred out to another provider if necessary.

The unique opportunity for community members also offers a chance for students to get invaluable hands-on experience, said second-year student Will Tschannen.

When he started at the clinic, “I was diving into our book learning, and the professor allowed me to go in and get a history and physical on the patient,” he said. “Our supervisors allow us to form our own diagnoses. There’s a lot of autonomy they allow but at the same time, there’s a safety net.”

As valuable as refining his skills has been the chance to use what he’s learned to help those in need, he’s said.

The opportunity highlights the reason that he and his peers got into their profession in the first place: “Every human should have basic medical rights,” he said.

The clinic opens on the first and third Wednesday of the month, running from 6 p.m. to about 9:30 p.m., with physicians seeing about five patients each night, Martin said. Patients have been asked to make an appointment prior to arriving at the clinic by calling (720) 437-6389.

Having held a soft opening on Sept. 2, Community Table and Red Rocks invite the public to a grand opening on Oct. 30 at 5 p.m., where visitors can receive free health screenings, massages, eyeglass adjustments and more. Those who are uninsured can also schedule flu shots for this time by calling the clinic.

With the site finally up and running, those involved are already looking for ways to provide even more services, such as nutrition consulting or mental health assistance, Martin said. Already, Community Table has partnered with LOMA Eye Care and Martinez Dental to expand its services.

Martin said she is open to working with any other community partners that would like to get involved.

“This is to try to treat the whole person,” she said. “If we can get people healthy and keep them healthy, that’s going to be good for everyone in the community.”

A GOLDEN LIFE Lois Cunniff Lindstrom Kennedy 1922-2019

T

he Arvadans who knew Lois Cunniff Lindstrom Kennedy know how she changed the city.

Those who work at the Arvada Center know Lindstrom as a community leader who advocated for the bond issue that ultimately established the center.

Members of the Arvada Historical Society knew her as the group’s founder and detailed keeper of the city’s history.

Those who had her as an elementary school teacher know her for the plays she wrote, which included a speaking part for every child in the class to encourage a love for the arts.

And most of the time, for those who knew Lindstrom, the strongest memories and most poignant stories don’t only revolve around how she changed the city; they center on the ways she changed the lives of individuals.

“When I think of those years growing up,” said daughter Linnea Soderstrom, “I think of how she had an old typewriter and the constant, constant clacking of the keys, and the meetings and the PTA and the flurry of activity,

‘We were some of the first classes that would walk up to the Arvada Center, and she would educate us about Arvada history. I remember her kindness, her penmanship and that she supported all of us as if we were her own kids.’

LINDSTROM’S LEGACY For decades, Lois Cunniff Lindstrom Kennedy researched and wrote on the history of Arvada and its schools, churches and people. The following is a list of some of Lindstrom’s best-known publications: 1973: Contributor to Waters of Gold 1980: The Old Mill 1986: Footprints on the Way, History of Arvada Presbyterian Church 1987: Asher H. Patten, His Life and Times 1990: History of Helen E. Lawrence Elementary School 1992: First Gold: Lewis Ralston and Arvada, June 22, 1850 2011: Ralston’s Gold Lindstrom, and Linnea. After the passing of her first husband in 1984, she married Patrick Kennedy in 1997.

A lover of history, Lindstrom didn’t need much time to realize that her fellow Arvadans hadn’t uncovered much of the city’s history; the realization set off decades of research, the formation of the Arvada Historical Society and the writing of several historical books and plays authored

by Lindstrom. She received a number of awards and was named the Arvada Woman of the Year in 1972.

Those who knew her say she was “the force” behind numerous changes, said Vesta Miller, former Arvada mayor who once lived on the same street as Lindstrom did. Miller especially

remembers Lindstrom’s forcefulness in establishing the Arvada Center and the historical museum within.

“It’s been nothing but a huge success, and it never would have happened if Lois hadn’t been the force,” she said. Without her, she said, “the whole city would have been totally different. When Lois believed in something, she pushed for it, and the impact was on all age-groups in the city.”

Adam Stolte, production manager at the Arvada Center, likewise credits Lindstrom with the center’s creation and success. His first experience with the center was when his class went

by Kathy Muni Some people are convinced that a reverse mortgage is a trick—at first. And there are some historical reasons for that belief.

Reverse mortgages have been around since the 1980s. Years ago, some questionable lenders failed to disclose that you are required to pay homeowners insurance and property taxes (which are paid through an escrow account with a traditional forward mortgage). This led to sensational headlines blaming reverse mortgages for foreclosures.

Why are you seeking this office?

Because I want to bring fresh perspective to City Council, and use this to address the issues facing Arvada now and in the future. I want to help Arvada grow responsibly, provide quality services and a high quality of life for its residents, but also keep the charm and atmosphere that so many people love about Arvada.

What makes you the best person for the job?

I think my youth, and practical, pragmatic approach to issues is well-suited for City Council. I think one refreshing thing about me is that I don’t consider myself an expert in politics, or a politician.

While highly attuned to both national and local politics, in the end I am what elected officials should be: representatives of our communities, with no strong affiliation or connection to politicians or special interests.

What are your top three priorities if elected?

First, Jefferson Parkway: Assuring the project is handled appropriately. Second, increasing community involvement and enhancing transparency in Council matters. Third, effectively managing affordable housing projects, while protecting current residents from tax increases.

Section 8 funding has not kept pace with demand in Arvada, should other resources be used to create more affordable housing? What, and why?

Currently I believe the resources Arvada affords to housing projects are adequate for the city’s current growth rate. As leaders and a community we need to measure the pace of developments against current budgets and infrastructure. If Arvada grows too fast too quick, it could come at the expense of current residents who may not look favorable upon some affordable housing decisions.

Are there still blighted areas in Arvada in need of attention from the Urban Renewal Authority? Why, or why not, does the city need these renewal efforts?

I believe in general the city has done a good job of restoring blighted areas in Arvada. That being said, I also believe the definition of “blight” may need to be revisited, and in the same note I don’t believe AURA is as necessary for such projects. I believe local regulations as well as traditional conversations with communities and developers are adequate for any more renewal efforts within the city.

I am running for city council in Arvada to continue the work I have been doing for our community for the last 15 years. I love contributing to parks, recreation, work spaces, shopping, and schools and by being elected to the Arvada city council I will continue to contribute to all of those areas.

What makes you the best person for the job?

There is no other candidate in the District 2 race that can match my history of contributing to our community. I have worked on parks including Britton and Griffith Station, recreation at Fitzmorris Recreation Center, development by leading the Arvada Planning Commission, traffic by leading the campaign to widen 72nd Ave and Ralston Road, schools by leading Jeffco’s Technology and Data Privacy Advisory Committee. These experiences have prepared me.

What are your top three priorities if elected?

My top priorities are traffic, development, and affordable housing.

Arvada should work with any developer that is bringing resources to build affordable housing. We should look at zoning and make reasonable allowances that will help those developers complete affordable housing projects while not infringing on existing neighborhoods.

Are there still blighted areas in Arvada in need of attention from the Urban Renewal Authority? Why, or why not, does the city need these renewal efforts?

There are still active urban renewal areas and will be for at least 10 years. AURA needs to finish the job it has started and complete the work it has done.

Lauren Simpson A foreign policy and diplomatic officer for the Canadian Consulate, Lauren Simpson lives in the Lamar Heights neighborhood of Arvada. She’s a 2017 graduate of the Colorado Chamber’s program for “Rising Leaders.” This is her first foray into city politics.

You have to be the change that you want to see in the world. Politics today have become toxic, with many of us finding validation in echo chambers and fault with those that may disagree with us. That needs to change, and I Simpson believe I have the skills, attitude and fresh ideas necessary to serve this city well—now and into the future.

What makes you the best person for the job?

My background is in international diplomacy, working at all levels from federal leaders to city councils. It had given me the balance, skills and knowledge-base necessary to take on this role. I know how to build bridges and work with individuals of all backgrounds and beliefs. I know how to serve, how to listen and how to work hard (and be nice!) while also embracing bold ideas that will position this city for success in the future.

What are your top three priorities if elected?

1) A diverse housing stock that includes options that are affordable and attainable for workers; 2) Supporting small businesses in our community and helping them stay competitive; and 3) Investing in “placemaking” — creation of dynamic spaces that are safe and fun for all of our residents. This goes beyond parks and rec centers (though those are certainly a part of it), and into bold ideas like the creation of an Arts District and walkable attractions across our city.

Section 8 funding has not kept pace with demand in Arvada, should other resources be used to create more affordable housing? What, and why?

Yes. We should use zoning to allow development of density housing that includes units that are priced obtainably. We should also closely look at other creative solutions — such as tiny home or “dorm-style” communities — as well as what we can do locally to reduce barriers to condominium development, which is often the entry point for young professionals into homeownership.

Are there still blighted areas in Arvada in need of attention from the Urban Renewal Authority? Why, or why not, does the city need these renewal efforts?

Yes, there are, but they’re not in Olde Town.

They’re in areas like southeast Arvada, which has not seen the same attention and investment as other parts of the city. I want that to change, and I support Council assuming an increased oversight role of AURA to ensure: 1) projects remain focused on this core mandate of removing blight, 2) serve the public interest (for instance, utilizing TIF to help build a hospital), and 3) support our local businesses.

there on a field trip, under the supervision of Lindstrom, who was his first-grade teacher at Secrest Elementary School.

“We were some of the first classes that would walk up to the Arvada Center, and she would educate us about Arvada history. I remember her kindness, her penmanship and that she supported all of us as if we were her own kids,” he said. “I work in theater now, and the first play I was ever in was in Lois’s class. I still have the script.”

During her decades-long career as a teacher in Jefferson County, Lindstrom and a fellow teacher earned their master’s degrees together, with the two traveling up to the University of Colorado in the summers.

“Ever since she was a little girl, teaching was what she wanted to do. She put herself through school because she wanted it that badly,” Soderstrom said. “She was a role model for hard work and doing the right thing.”

Lindstrom is also known for advocating for recognition of the first documented instance that gold was found in Colorado, by Lewis Ralston in Arvada, 1850; for playing an integral role in the designation of Arvada’s Gold Strike Park; and

working to have the Arvada Flour Mill added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Soderstrom remembers her childhood visits to that mill where, alongside her parents and Arvada Historical Society members, she would help with the efforts to restore the 1925 mill and transform it into a museum, which opened in 1980.

“She didn’t stop until she got what she thought was right. It was about knowing where you came from and the history of where you are,” Soderstrom said. “I have a love of history as well, and I know where that comes from.”

Most recently, Lindstrom brainstormed and advocated for the rail line through Olde Town to be named the Gold Line, or G Line — a suggestion that RTD planners accepted.

The people who knew Lindstrom have different stories to tell and accomplishments to highlight, but all of them are sure to mention the same aspects of her character which, just as her contributions, made her famous among Arvadans.

“One of the reasons why Arvada is a quaint town in the middle of the metro area is because of people like Lois, who felt history and art and expression are important,” Stolte said. “Her thirst for history helped form Arvada. She was a walking history book for her 97 years.”

For Richard and Suzanne Zernow of Lakewood, the fun begins weeks before the actual event, when you’re planning out your outfit for the theme of the evening.

“And when you arrive that evening,” Richard Zernow said, “you get to interact with wonderful people who are all there for a common purpose — to have fun, enjoy wonderful food, see and hear outstanding talent perform … and, above all, see everyone else show love and support for Miners Alley Playhouse.”

Miners Alley Playhouse’s annual fundraiser takes place 6-11 p.m., Oct. 25, at the Buffalo Rose. This year’s event is themed A Night at the Old West Saloon, and costumes are encouraged.

“Western is fun,” said Len Matheo the executive/artistic director at Miners Alley Playhouse, “especially in a town like Golden.”

This year, the playhouse will be using a good portion of the funds raised from its annual fundraiser to

build up its children’s programming, Matheo said.

“The current programming for kids is super popular,” said Aimee Valdez who is a season ticketholder and serves on the playhouse’s board of directors, “but it’s limited to the resources available.”

With more resources, more children can get involved, Valdez said.

And when children are involved in theater, they benefit in a number of ways, she added. These include the opportunity to explore creativity in a safe place, broadening their sense of humanity, education and learning new skills and building self-confidence.

Theater in general builds community, the Zernows said, and it’s important to support local theater.

The couple are Miners Alley Playhouse season ticketholders and have attended the playhouse’s annual fundraiser for the past four years.

Often, you’ll meet someone new at the fundraiser, and then run into each other at a play, the Zernows said. Or, in the lobby of Miner’s Alley Playhouse, it’s not uncommon for complete strangers to start up conversations with each other to share thoughts about the evening’s performance, the Zernows added.

“Miners Alley Playhouse takes their role in the community, and their responsibility to the community, seriously,” Richard Zernow said, “and makes every effort to pay it forward to the community by providing the best plays with the best cast at the best price.”

Suzanne Zernow agreed.

“I think if more people attended live theater, their lives would be so much more enriched,” Suzanne Zernow said. And “the more people who attend local plays, the more people who will understand and appreciate the importance of the arts and humanities in the world.”

VOICES A switch in time ain’t kind

on’t forget to fall back. I would rather not fall back or spring forward, and every year others express the same thing at the time, and then we forget about it until it comes around again.

It’s not as much of a nuisance as it once was, because many of our clocks do it on their own, even inexpensive ones, like my clock radio.

It’s all an entomologist’s fault. I’ll get to him.

Wikipedia says, “(Daylight saving time) clock shifts sometimes complicate timekeeping and can disrupt travel, billing, record keeping, medical devices, heavy equipment, and sleep patterns.”

Clocks are everywhere, and it’s why I don’t own a watch. A watch is one way to let others know what kind of watch you have.

Like that football player who wears a $191,000 watch. While he is playing. It’s another professional athlete absurdity.

I am never late.

“It will be.”

Arizona and Hawaii don’t observe Daylight Savings Time, although Arizona Navajo observe it on tribal lands.

If you were dancing back and forth across time zones in a Navajo dance hall that straddled tribal land and the rest of Arizona, wouldn’t it ruin your moves? It would ruin mine.

If you leave tribal lands at 7 a.m. for a flight that leaves Sky Harbor Airport at 9 a.m., how many Advil would you need?

That entomologist I mentioned was a man named George Vernon Hudson, who moved from England to New Zealand to study insects. He wanted an extra hour of sunlight in the summer to analyze gnats, and it’s because of him I have to get on a ladder twice a year.

If I could impose anything on the rest of the world, it wouldn’t have anything to do with what time it was.

I’d start with baseball. One game each season would have the complete prohibition of cellphones. “Non licit.”

Someone said, “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.”

However, Evelyn Waugh said, “Punctu- QUIET ality is the virtue of DESPERATION the bored.”

I think punctuality is very erotic, is what I think.

I have never been on an airplane at 2 a.m. when we are supposed to fall back or spring forward, but I have often wondered what Craig Marshall happens.

I think if you are Smith flying from the East Coast to the West Coast, you arrive before you left. Do your whiskers know that? Of course not, they keep growing as if it’s business as usual.

There’s one clock I never change. It’s the one in my car.

Jennifer says, “Your clock isn’t right.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mayors for Marc As former mayors of Arvada, we support Mayor Marc Williams’ re-election. Marc has a record of serving the best interests of all Arvadans and staying above partisan politics. We all should agree that there’s no such thing as a Democratic pothole or a Republican city park.

Seeking elected municipal office is something a handful of people are brave enough to do. The willingness of citizens to take the leap and throw their hats into the ring for elected office in Arvada may diminish if our elections become partisan popularity contests. That is why Colorado has a long tradition of nonpartisan municipal elections.

We are proud of our city, our history and traditions, and the bright future ahead. Marc has demonstrated his leadership by working collaboratively to address traffic and other regional issues, such as homelessness, and bringing more jobs to Arvada.

housing, shops, restaurants and parks. He has made Arvada safer through community policing. Marc has led efforts to add more pedestrian friendly sidewalks, bike lanes and multi-use trails. He helped expand opportunities for higher education by bringing a Red Rocks Community College campus to Arvada.

Those who know Marc understand how hard he works to ensure Arvada remains a great place to live, work and enjoy life. With Marc’s continued leadership, we know that Arvada will move forward.

The song is an example of what’s called “cheerful fatalism.”

y senior year of college, as part of completing my requirements of my music degree, I performed a recital. HITTING This is, for those who have never been HOME through one, a terrifying event. It was me ... with a piano accompanist. For an hour.

Yes, musicians do some pretty nervewracking stuff.

At any rate, I performed five pieces Michael Alcorn of music that night: a Baroque Concerto (think Bach and Vivaldi and ancient churches), a 20th-century Concerto (think major orchestra stuff), a contemporary thing (think weird coffee houses and Beatnik poetry) and two

jazz pieces (think … uh, jazz). It was a variety, it was challenging, I spent six months preparing for it, and I was incredibly happy with it. When it was over.

I can tell you, all these years later, I remember almost nothing of any of the pieces, except the 20th century Concerto. That one has stuck with me for almost 30 years, because of one thing: beauty. Don’t get me wrong — the Baroque piece has its own beauty, in a mathematical and predictable way. And the jazz pieces, if I was lucky that day, probably had moments or elements of beauty. uses an altered (muted) sound, and has a main theme that is intense, exciting, and memorable. It is the sort of thing that even the most wooden ears would absorb and leave in the brain to emerge, unbidden, in a whistle or a hum.

I tell you all of this to reveal one of my biases. There are several different schools of thought with regard to the purpose of art. One school, the one prevalent during Bach and Vivaldi’s time, was that art exists to glorify God and draw man’s thoughts and feelings towards the Divine. Another school holds that art, as a shortening of the word “artifice,” is that art is artificial — i.e., fake — and exists to put a glossy veneer on reality. Kind of like Facebook. In other words, art is to create beauty, to raise us above our mundane existence and contemplate things better than our current state of affairs. Another school of thought holds that art exists to express emotion and experience, sometimes in its most raw and unrefined form.

They are all perfectly valid schools of thought, each with their strengths and major supporters. You probably know, now, what school I most closely identify with. My daughter the dancer disagrees: she is more in line with the third school of thought. And the performances of her dance companies reflect that — raw, athletic, visceral,

If Jon is reinstated, great. If his services are no longer appropriate in the eyes of the board, great, but there should be no “golden parachute” if he is let go. He was paid his salary and his retirement contributions.

Especially if he is leaving under a cloud, there should be no additional compensation and full transparency of the issues should not be hidden from the public or swept under the rug. He has hurt fellow fire fighters, the board, the staff and the community.

I do what I do 40 hours a week in the hope that, someday, in some small way, the children I teach to make music might have a moment, a fleeting glimpse, of how much power they possess to bring beauty into the world. I have no illusions that the performances these kids give under my tutelage will bring tears of joy to anybody’s eyes (except for their grandparents); but, these small steps now might lead someday to soaring melodies, interesting countermelodies, and spine-chilling moments of sublime artistry.

And, in this day and age, is there anything the world needs more than a generation of students who believe they can create beauty?

There are lyrics in one of Phil Collins’ songs: “You have one voice ... Come on and dance into the light.”

Every child has their own voice, and every child has the power to use it to create light. Give effort to helping kids find their voice and teaching them to create beauty and light. Otherwise, they’ll just fall into a dark abyss of impotent emotion. Kind of like Twitter.

And, by the way — not just true for students.

Christian Redman Christian Redman (C Troop, 1986-1989) passed away on October 5, 2019 after a three year fight with cancer.

He served in the Border Legion as a 19D Scout, first in C Troop and then at Border Operations.

Chris was an accomplished Bradley crewman and gunner, and he was known for his natural ability in the field, whether at the Border, maneuvering through the German countryside, or during gunnery training and certifications at Wildflecken and Grafenwoehr. Chris fondly spoke of his days in the Cold Steel, especially as the driver for thenFirst Sergeant (now SGM, Ret.) Roy Sampson.

An avid motorcyclist, Chris enjoyed riding all over the US; he was especially happy when he shared adventures with his Army buddies from the Blackhorse. He also loved to meet friends and spend time in Key West, FL, especially while under the “supervision” of former Cold Steel Troopers such as retired CSM Curtis “CC” Brown and MSG Jim Oldenburg.

After service in the Army, Chris chose a career in Law Enforcement, eventually rising to be Chief of the City of Hurstbourne Acres Police Department in Jefferson County, KY. He then retired to be with his family in Parker, CO for the past 5 years, where he started and ran a construction company until his illness forced him

to stop working.

Christian was very active in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment’s Blackhorse Association, where he helped build the Gold Vault Chapter, and he was a key contributor to the 2013 Regimental Reunion in Louisville, KY. Christian was also one of the founders of the Cold Steel Scholarship, which is a part of the Blackhorse Association Scholarship program.

Chris is survived by his father, Command Master Chief David Redman (USN, Ret.) and mother Jacquelyn; sisters Jennifer Redman Campbell and Susan Jeanette Redman; and his beloved daughter Alexis Rae Redman.

Services were held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 Kenyon Ave., in Denver, on October 17, 2019, after an escorted procession from the Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 5303 East County Line Rd., in Centennial.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that any remembrances be donated to the Cold Steel Scholarship Fund of the Blackhorse Association, in memory of Christian Redman.

Robert E. “Bob” Wilson May 4, 1946 – October 13, 2019

Bob died suddenly and unexpectedly of natural causes at home in Arvada. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Harold and Betty June Wilson, he graduated from Omaha Technical High School and then went on to study electrical engineering.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska, master’s degrees from the Universities of Arizona and Idaho, and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho. Bob retired as an energy systems engineer from Western Area Power Administration, U.S. Department of Energy. During his career he also held a visiting faculty position at the University of Wyoming.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife Susan of Arvada; son Jeremy (Stacy) of Colorado Springs; three much-adored

grandsons, Jacob, Nate, and Sam; and brother Jim of Houston.

Bob was known in Arvada and the metro area as a tireless, passionate transit advocate. Among his many volunteer activities, he served on the City of Arvada Gold Line Advisory Committee and RTD’s FasTracks Sustainability Committee. He was a dedicated member and past president of the Arvada Jefferson Kiwanis. His inquisitive mind led to wide-ranging interests: travel, railroad history and model trains, science, astronomy, music, hiking and jeeping in the Colorado mountains.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2, at 11:00 am, at Jefferson Unitarian Church, 14350 W. 32nd Ave.

They are falling behind other metro area students and will be affected for life. On 2019 statewide tests, only 51.7% of students met or exceeded standards in English, only 39.8% met or exceeded standards in math and only 37.3% met or exceeded standards in science. They were submitted by campaigners for its approval, which would allow Jeffco to keep, rather than return, overpayment of your taxes. “We know better than you how to spend it.”

In the past there have been such ruses. Campaigners for the FasTracks Yes! made out-of-context remarks about opposition statements exposing the misrepresentations in ballot language. A judge found that this was reprehensible and unethical, but probably legal.

Several years ago the Jeffco School District was forced by Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) constitutional regulations to publish a mockery of positive statements in the FOR statement, regarding a large bond issue. This may have caused the voter rejection.

Today’s crude misrepresentation by advocates of the TABOR by-pass, aimed at perceived voter ignorance, should be ignored. Very little common sense is needed for a “no” vote.

Looking at the world in a new way

Every person has a different tolerance for scary, but the core themes of what scares us is relatively unanimous: Failure, the unknown, death. You know when you’re scared when your heart races, your breath shortens and the hair stands up on your neck. And we seek out this feeling, whether it be from a horror film, a roller coaster ride or bungee jumping.

verybody sees the world in their own way, and communicating that perspective is one of the many things that has kept art growing and connecting with people for centuries.

Some artists just see the world differently than most of us.

In 2009, Michael Paglia and Mary Voelz Chandler chronicled some of those very artists in their seminal work, “Colorado Abstract: Paintings and Sculpture.” The book explored the history of abstract art in the state and looked at contemporary COMING artists who were ATTRACTIONS making a name for themselves in the field.

To mark the tenth anniversary of the book’s publication, the Arvada Center and Kirkland Museum of Fine & DecoraClarke Reader tive Art are hosting a joint exhibition, titled Colorado Abstract +10: A History & A Survey. The History portion is on display at Kirkland, ADDRESS, through Jan. 12, and the Survey is at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through Nov. 17.

Kirkland’s exhibit focuses on two and three-dimensional artworks created by the artists featured in the historical section of the book, which provides visitors a visual history of the style in the state.

“The history of abstraction in Colorado is important because our state has made major contributions to this international movement, and is still making them” said Hugh Grant, founding director and curator at Kirkland Museum, in a statement.

At the Arvada Center, the exhibit is split into two parts — in the Main Gallery there is a contemporary survey of works by artists originally included in the book. In their Upper and Theatre Galleries, additional Colorado artists working in abstraction are displayed.

“We wanted to showcase some of the work that the contemporary artists featured in the book have done in the last decade,” explained Collin Parson, the Arvada Center’s exhibition manager and curator.

“We reached out to Paglia and had him select some artists that weren’t able to be featured in the book or are making a name for themselves now.”

Why people seek to be scared and what they’re really afraid of

reg Reinke is in the business of scary, but he doesn’t always want to make you afraid.

Clad in a black leather jacket on Oct. 11 at his Littleton costume shop, Reinke Bros., he divulged his secrets for being scary without scaring people away.

“We use our minds,” Reinke said.

Scary is feeling your heart stop at the unexpected clash of plates shattering on the floor, the skincrawling sensation of being followed or the panicked feeling of losing your balance in a dark hallway. Each year, Reinke sets out to find new ways of prodding that part in a person’s brain — finding what scares people.

“If you make an experience where people come through and have a great time, listen to them as they come out,” Reinke said. “I’m here to entertain you.”

Reinke draws a line at displaying overwhelming images of blood and guts because, to him, that’s not scary. It’s just disturbing. He

toes this line occasionally, but even the edible, fake human limbs sitting in a deli refrigerator provokes smacking lips as much as a shivering spine.

Reinke wants to show people the fun side of scary. For small children, he’ll turn all the lights on in his haunted house tour, allow them to touch the walls and see that everything is fake.

DeCarvalho said what scares people can often be attributed to real-life anxieties people feel, like losing cell phone service or being stalked. These are newer feelings, specifically in American culture, that trigger that sense of fear. Gone are the days of werewolves and vampires scaring us, here are the days of “real-life” horrors. “(Scary) tends to fit with a lot of cognitive interests,” DeCarvalho said. “You can kind of think of it as watching a train wreck. You’re kind of repulsed, but you want to keep watching.”

How we find our scares boils down to what actually scares us, DeCarvalho said. “Paranormal Activity,” released in 2008, commented on the Great Recession. Classic 1950s alien and sci-fi movies metaphorized the Red Scare, while ghosts often symbolize the unknown or death, DeCarvalho said.

“To me, abstract art helps people see the world differently,” Parson said.

“Abstract art is going strong and not going anywhere.”

Most people ceremoniously celebrate these fears around Halloween and those who are particularly festive go out of their way to incite the feeling. Some are scared more easily than others.

A skeleton may be an unsettling symbol of death, but a person skipping around in a smiling skeleton jumpsuit doesn’t make us feel afraid.

Embracing something that scares us automatically reduces the scary value of it and gives us a glimpse into our greatest fears and how we would react in the face of danger. At Halloween, we laugh and giggle, collect candy and bob for apples in the face of everything that scares us so it no longer does.

“We all need that outlet and some way to get that extra little kick you wouldn’t be able to get otherwise,” said Bryan Bonner, co-founder of Rocky Mountain Paranormal.

Bonner said the feeling can be addictive, but, “just like a drug,” he said, “it takes differently” for different people.

“The spooky side of (scary) is the safe side of it, but the initial reaction is the same thing,” Bonner said.

“That initial reaction is nearly identical, which is why I think people are addicted to that.”

‘The culmination of a journey’ Christian Redman remembered by family, brothers in arms

Christian Redman was known as a man who brought people together.

His band of brothers knew him as a man who would offer his right arm if needed, a man who would give you the shirt off his back without question.

“You grow real close when you face what we were facing every day,” said former Capt. Dan Schultz, of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Blackhorse Regiment, who commanded C Troop when Redman left in 1989, but served in the same unit as Redman at the same time.

Redman, 51, of Parker, died Oct. 5 of complications from the colon cancer he fiercely fought for three years. His friends say he was always a fighter — a trait instilled in him from a young age by his father, Command Master Chief David Redman, now retired from the Navy.

“They have this thing in them that they’re all fighters,” said Ron Meier, a close friend who, with Schultz and a crowd of family and friends, attended the Oct. 17 honor-guard ceremony for Redman at Fort Logan National

Among those at the service were members of the Blackhorse Association, a tightly-knit group organized for veterans in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Ray Simpson, a Blackhorse veteran from Colorado Springs, first met Redman in March after offering to drive him to Key West as part of the association’s inaugural make-a-wish last ride.

Simpson didn’t know Redman, “but I didn’t have to,” he said. “I knew his brothers.”

ride his Harley in Florida during Bike Week and put his toes in the sand — although an ambitious last wish — was rewarding and humbling,” Rocky Cuda, a retired sergeant and president of the Florida chapter of the Blackhorse Regiment Cavalry Motorcycles, wrote in an email.

Cuda, Simpson and Redman connected on the Blackhorse Association Facebook page as Redman shared his battle with cancer. Cuda’s idea for a Blackhorse last ride became “Maverick’s Last Ride,” after Redman’s call sign from his Army days. Although it didn’t materialize as a cross-country caravan because of Redman’s medical condition, he was able to visit his daughter in Kentucky and get to Key West, Redman’s all-time happy place, accompanied by various Blackhorse veteran troopers along the way.

Meier and a number of Redman’s Parker friends, including Bob Nobles of Takoda Tavern, held a fundraiser and started a GoFundMe to help pay for expenses of the trip and Redman’s medical bills. People from across the Denver metro area and country contributed.

“It’s the culmination of a journey,” Meier said at Fort Logan. “It wasn’t a fun journey for him or his friends because he was a very proud man. He was a vivacious guy, the life-of-theparty guy, and to see that deteriorate was heartbreaking.”

For Redman, who was accustomed to being the problem-solver, the one

organizing help and fundraisers for others, the reversal of roles was humbling. The generosity of strangers and friends touched him deeply.

“I am very blessed,” he said after a fundraiser in 2017 to help with his medical expenses.

Redman served in the Border Legion as 19D Scout of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. He arrived in Fulda, Germany, as a Private First Class, where he met his commanding officer, Schulz, serving from 1986-89. The 11th Armored Cavalry was stationed at the front step of the Soviet Union and stood guard as the Berlin Wall fell in 1989.

After four years in the Army, he began a career in law enforcement, eventually becoming chief of the City of Hurstbourne Acres Police Department in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

He semi-retired to be with his family in Parker in 2014. There, he started and ran a construction company until his illness kept him from working.

Redman is survived by his father, his mother Jacquelyn, sisters Jennifer Redman Campbell and Susan Jeanette Redman, and his beloved daughter, Alexis Rae Redman.

“I’ve lived three lifetimes in one — I’ve stuffed everything in it,” Redman said during an interview in February. “The most important thing is my daughter is taken care of.”

Teen suicide PSAs released by coalition of state offices, parents, teens Youths speak out about mental health following stories of south metro suicides

When the impact of a suicide started to take a toll on Jim Janicek’s kids, he knew he had to do something.

“My kids go to Arapahoe High School,” Janicek told a crowd at the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center near downtown Denver.

When Arapahoe student Nick Bales died by suicide last fall, it sent Janicek’s kids into a spiral, he said.

That was just a few days before another Arapahoe student took her life.

“My kids literally came home saying, `I’m so scared because I don’t know who’s going to be next,’ ” Janicek said.

Janicek, the president of a TV production and marketing company, approached the Colorado Office of Film, Television and Media, later talking to the state Attorney General’s Office.

Eventually, he met Rick Padilla, the father of Jack Padilla, a freshman at Cherry Creek High School who died by suicide in February. Friends of Jack Padilla, who assembled into a group called “Jackstrong” to raise

It all led up to an Oct. 8 ceremony at the judicial center, where state officials, teens and mental health leaders launched public service announcement-style videos with a concerted message: “You’re not alone.”

The videos feature young people opening up about their own struggles with mental health and suicide attempts, sharing information about resources and giving advice to parents on how to help kids who may be having suicidal thoughts.

“I truly believe we can live in a world without suicide,” said Zoe Royer, one of five young people who spoke at the event. “The first step is right here. Talking, listening, building meaningful relationships.”

Film fest takes audiences to new places Denver event also honors late artistic director

At its core, film is an expression of people’s lives, and as such, it stands to reason film festivals would mirror this fact. And for more than two decades, the Denver Film Festival was at least partly an expression of Denver Film’s artistic director, Michael Brittin “Brit” Withey.

The 50-year-old was killed in a one-car accident on March 31 and so it’s fitting that the 42nd Denver Film Festival begins with a tribute to the man and just some of the movies he loved.

“Brit was a mentor to me, so I’ve been working with others in his stead on this year’s festival,” said Matthew Campbell, interim artistic director. “We spent the last year trying to put together something really special. Something to honor Brit’s legacy and something for everyone, regardless of what their tastes are.”

The festival kicks off on Wednesday, Oct. 30 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, 14th and Curtis Street, UA Denver Pavilions, 500 16th St.

and SIE Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Ave. The Festival Annex will again be set up at the McNichols Civic Center Building, 144 W. Colfax Ave. During the festival’s run more than 250 films will be screened, including local, national and international works. There will also be industry panels, achievement awards, tributes, as well as an International Focus on Brazilian Cinema.

“We have some great red carpets with some movies that will be discussed well into award season,” said Festival Director and Interim Executive Director Britta Erickson.

“The body of program is super strong, with films from more than 40 countries.”

Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out,” featuring a knock-out cast that includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield and Jamie Lee Curtis, is one of four red carpet special events, with Johnson in attendance to receive the 2019 John Cassavetes Award on Thursday, Oct. 31.

As in previous years, the Festival Annex has become the place to be for people who want a more interactive experience. The annex will play host to panel discussions; virtual reality, interactive and immersive experiences; High School Day; community engagement; and a Festival Lounge for the public.

A popular returning feature is the 60-minute “Fire Escape,” which can include up to 15 people at a time.

In the experience, eight building tenants are entangled in a murder and participants need to solve the case. And then there is “Arden’s

Wake: Tide’s Fall,” a virtual reality experience that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a young woman lives with her father in a lighthouse at the edge of an endless sea.

“Creatives are doing some really exciting things with VR experiences,” said Campbell. “We’re bringing these different types of storytelling and new technological forms to Denver audience. A lot of them are brand new, and there’s no other way to experience them.”

Creating an experience is really what makes attending a film festival a unique experience. For many of these films, particularly shorts and international films, this may be the only chance to see them on a big screen. Both Campbell and Erickson encourage attendees to be bold and adventurous when selecting films or themes to explore and then attend a panel or discuss the films you check out.

“What’s important in experiencing a film festival is taking chances.

Read through the guide, pick things that feel heartfelt to you and things that connect with you,” Erickson said. “You may not love everything you see, but you have to dive in. We want you to have a dialogue about what you see, because you get more out of the experience when you interact with your fellow audience members.”

Ralston Valley knocks off top-ranked Columbine in thriller

LAKEWOOD — Ralston Valley versus Columbine lived up to all the hype Oct. 18 at Jeffco Stadium.

A 60-yard touchdown pass from Ralston Valley senior quarterback Walker Brickle to senior JJ Galbreath with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter pulled the No. 4 ranked Mustangs to within 23-22 against No. 1 Columbine.

“JJ ran a great route and the line gave me enough time to throw it,” Brickle said of the touchdown pass.

“We delivered. It was a big play.”

Ralston Valley went for the gamewinning 2-point conversion. Senior Chase Wilson just crossed the goalline to give the Mustangs the 24-23 upset victory.

“I was pumped. Coach (Matt Loyd) wouldn’t have made that call if he didn’t know we could get it,” Wilson said about going for the 2-point conversion. “I got some good blocks from my fullbacks and just put my head down to get across the plane.”

Brickle’s second touchdown pass of the night to Galbreath is one that is going to be remembered for a long time. It’s a play that Columbine senior Tanner Hollens knew was coming sooner or later.

“He (Galbreath) did a double-move.

They had been setting it up all game,” Hollens said of what he saw on the final touchdown from his defensive back position. “They were going hitch, hitch, hitch and then they hit us with the double-move … touchdown.”

took a couple of knees before the Mustangs (8-0, 3-0) could officially celebrate Ralston Valley’s first victory over Columbine since 2014.

“I’m just happy for these kids. The senior class had never beaten Columbine,” Loyd said. “That’s what I’m happy for. I’m just glad our senior class can say they beat them once.”

Loyd gambled a few times in the victory. The biggest was going for it on fourth-down from the Rebels’ 8-yard-

line in the third quarter. The gamble paid off with Brickle escaping Columbine’s rush and scrambling in for an 8-yard touchdown run to put Ralston Valley up 16-13 midway through the third quarter.

“In a game like this you have to gamble and take sacrifices,” said Galbreath, who had a 5-yard touchdown catch in the first half. “Tonight, Coach did it and he had faith in us.”

“He (Brickle) is very, very tough. He is very competitive and he knew he was going to have to hang in there,” said Loyd, of facing the great pass rush of the Rebels led by senior Justin Lohrenz, who sacked Brickle twice.

“He did so and made some plays to allow us to win the game.”

Faith Christian’s football team sees the playoffs are coming but still has business to take care of in the regular season. As it has been in the previous three seasons, the final games of Flatirons Conference play will determine the playoff fate of the Eagles.

The home stretch has been Bennett, Middle Park and D’Evelyn and those games have always determined the winner of the league. Oct. 18 Faith Christian embarked on that stretch with a home game against the 4-2 Bennett Tigers.

Bennett presents an interesting challenge with their single wing offense, something you don’t see as often in high school play. The Tigers rely heavily on a run game and it takes

The Tigers unable to move the ball gave it back to Faith and the Eagles marched down the field and Erick Granados scored his first of three touchdowns on the night to make the score 10-0. The Tigers however forced a fumble and then drove the field and found the end zone to make the score 10-6 late in the first half. With under a minute to play in the half the Eagles quickly moved down the field to the Bennett 33 yard line. With one second on the clock Jon Randall booted a 50-yard field goal as the clock expired to give Faith a 13-6 lead at the half. The field goal would be a school record and show the awesome power of Randall.

The Eagles received the second half kickoff but a third down interception would be returned for a touchdown.

GOLDEN, Colo. — Colorado School of Mines’ defense thoroughly dominated as it shut out Fort Lewis, 42-0, for the Orediggers’ homecoming game at Marv Kay Stadium.

Mines (7-0, 7-0 RMAC) produced backto-back shutouts for the first time since 1958, with an overall great defensive performance yet this season, holding Fort Lewis to just 78 total yards, one first down in the first half and four total, and 37 yards rushing. Fort Lewis (3-4, 3-4 RMAC) did not cross midfield until the team’s final drive of the game.

Against the RMAC’s #2-rated defense, quarterback John Matocha literally did it all, passing for a career-high 339 yards and four touchdowns, while also running for a score and catching the game’s opening touchdown on a trick play from running back Michael Zeman. Zeman rushed for a game-high 76 yards and also caught a touchdown.

Matocha hit four different receivers for touchdowns including Zeman, Sean O’Dell, John Johnston, and Mason Karp. Johnston led all receivers with 86 yards while Karp had a game-high six catches. FLC quarterback Eric Ornduff was held to 10-of-22 passing for 41 yards as he was sacked three times.

Is Jeffco Generations the Right Program for Jeffco?

As a concerned Jeffco citizen I find the academic growth scores decreasing for the 2nd year in a row concerning. Our Superintendent (Dr. Glass) was from Eagle and he implemented “Eagle Generations”. Dr. Glass then implemented a very similar program “Jeffco Generations” in our school district. Under “Eagle Generations” achievement decreased and his implementation of “Jeffco Generations” achievement has also decreased. Listening to the school board candidates backed by the status quo, they want to give Jeffco Generations more time. They both say “we need to give it time to prove itself ”. Well I think 4 years of declining achievement scores (2 in Eagle and 2 in Jeffco) is enough for

our students!

I am not saying scrap Jeffco Generations, I’m saying we need a board that will require a focus on improving achievement. If a student has two years of not learning the grade level content, it is very hard to catch up. I don’t want that for our children and I am sure you don’t want that for your children, grandchildren or your neighborhood children.

Two candidates for Jeffco School Board, Susan Miller and Rob Applegate will focus on improving student achievement.

Both will set goals and ensure our tax dollars are spent on programs that work for students. Our kids don’t have time to fall behind or spend extra money for tutors. It is time to add independent opinions to the school board. Our children’s future is at stake. Please vote for Susan Miller and Rob Applegate!

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN pursuant to Section 32-1-808, C.R.S., that vacancies currently exist on the board of directors of the Jefferson Metropolitan District No. 2 (the “District”). Any qualified, eligible elector of the District interested in filling such vacancy and serving on the board of directors should file a Letter of Interest with the Board on or before Sunday, November 3, 2019.

The Service Plan is on file and open for inspection in the office of the City Clerk, City Hall, 8101 Ralston Road, Arvada, Colorado 80002.

A public hearing on the Service Plan will be held by the City Council of the City of Arvada (the “City Council”) on November 18, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., at City Hall, 8101 Ralston Road, Arvada, Colorado 80002, or as soon thereafter as the City Council may hear such matter (the “Public Hearing”).

The purpose of the hearing is to consider the Service Plan and to form a basis for adopting a resolution approving, conditionally approving, or disapproving the Service Plan.

Metropolitan Districts

The purpose of the hearing is to consider the Service Plan and to form a basis for adopting a resolution approving, conditionally approving, or disapproving the Service Plan.

A general description of the land contained within the boundaries of the District is as follows: approximately 21 acres of residential land generally located on the southeast corner of West 58th Avenue and Ward Road in the City of Arvada, Jefferson County, State of Colorado.

The District is a metropolitan district.

The maximum mill levy for the District for debt shall be forty (50) mills subject to certain adjustment and release provisions as contemplated and described in the Service Plan. The maximum period of time which such levy shall be collected is forty (40) years after the initial imposition of such levy.

Pursuant to § 32-1-203(3.5), C.R.S. and Section 91-15(e) of the City Code, any person owning property in the District may request that such property be excluded from the District by submitting such request to the City Clerk no later than ten days prior to the Public Hearing.

All protests and objections must be submitted in writing to the City Council at or prior to the Public Hearing or any continuance or postponement thereof in order to be considered. All protests and objections to the District not presented in this manner shall be deemed to be waived.
