School board candidates on budget, programming priorities B Jeffco PTA hosts forum for four candidates in two races

Sept. 25 saw school board candidates take to the stage in Lakewood High School’s auditorium as the Jeffco PTA hosted its candidate forum for the 2019 election.

The forum followed Superintendent Jason Glass’ State of the District address, in which he outlined reasons to celebrate — the district has seen increased funding and support from the community — and also goals for the new candidates to keep in mind, such as boosting overall enrollment and student performance on standardized tests.

Two of five seats on the district’s Board of Education are open this year, and two candidates have entered each race.

With all four candidates having never served on the board before, the Q&A forum represented an opportunity for residents to hear what each will prioritize if elected.

When asked about the budget, candidates agreed that the district should increase teacher compensation. Schooley added that she would oppose a shift to a pay-for-performance model, in which teacher salaries would depend on student test performance and other such factors.

To encourage further public funding, which could help increase teacher salaries, the candidates

proposed different approaches.

“The district does a very good job of showing what money is spent on,” Applegate said, however, “the Board needs to show the money is being effectively used.” The board should provide the public with proof that programs have a direct impact on student success, he said.

Schooley suggested increasing communication around what students are doing with what they’ve learned. “We need to share the narrative of what well-educated children do for the community when they walk out of our schools,” she said.

Both candidates said they support the district’s current policy to allow families to choice-enroll students into schools that are not the family’s neighborhood school. For Applegate, this also means creating programs to ensure all families, particularly low-income families and those living in rural areas, have access to the same amount of choices.

The discussion then moved to how the district can better prepare Jeffco students who will not graduate college — roughly 75% of students, according to the Jeffco PTA — so that they can still pursue careers.

Applegate said he would advocate for programming that sees schools “team up with other industries in Colorado” — for example, an airline may send personnel to speak about

a career in aviation, as United Airlines did in his son’s preschool class, Applegate said.

Schooley recommended connecting students with opportunities in the nonprofit community. She also suggested further applying Jeffco Generations, the district’s strategic plan, which aims to teach children key skills that could apply to any career.

When students have succeeded with these skills, especially the non-traditional skills, it’s “changed their thoughts about themselves as students,” she said.

The candidates agreed that the district should not arm teachers.

Currently, Jeffco does not arm educators with concealed weapons, nor does it have plans to do so, Glass said.

District 4 In District 4, it’s a race between Joan Chávez-Lee, a former Jeffco teacher and principal, and Susan Miller, who has served on district committees and as president of the Wheat Ridge High School PTSA. Alongside the District 3 candidates, Chávez-Lee and Miller oppose arming educators, they said.

District 4 candidates also discussed the budget, with Chávez-Lee suggesting school communities would have more faith in the district, and be more inclined to approve public funding, if the schools themselves knew exactly how budget decisions impact them.

Many principals are not ever told what district decisions mean for them, she said; she advocated for heightened communication on the topic.

For Miller, the answer is in expanding the flexibility of the budget.

While the district has approximately a $1 billion budget, the majority is not discussed by the board, instead allocated to the same thing annually, she said.

“We need to look at a $1 billion budget every year,” she said. She also suggested allowing more decisions to be made at the local level by relying more heavily on Student-Based BudSEE BOARD, P3

geting (SBB), which lets individual schools make more funding choices.

While both support increasing teacher compensation, they gave different answers on whether the district should use pay-for-performance.

Chávez-Lee said the method “can be time-consuming and expensive to develop,” and “counter-intuitive,” as pay cuts can decrease teacher motivation instead of increase it.

But Miller said she could see pros and cons; she would like to explore how “some pool of money (could) be available for those teachers” who promote performance in their

schools, she said. However, she opposed cutting teacher pay based on performance.

On equity, the candidates suggested new programming to ensure families have access to both the opportunities and resources they need.

Miller said she plans to research successful examples of such programs across the country, then develop a similar model that could be feasible for Jeffco.

Chávez-Lee suggested the district focus more on supporting parents as well as children, potentially by providing resources, such as food, on-site at schools.

“At Molholm,” where Chávez-Lee was principal, she said, “we had a food bank on site. The school itself became a community hub and a safe place.”

Meet Ethan Lutz, council candidate for District 2

Arvada resident Ethan Lutz didn’t always see himself following in the footsteps of his mother and father, who are both involved in the local government of their Alaska town.

But after Lutz and his family moved to Arvada three years ago, he quickly realized his neighbors were looking for change — and he wanted to be a part of it, he said.

“I’ve heard about a lot of things from the different neighborhoods, from affordable childcare to the Jefferson Parkway, and they’re all important to me,” he said. “I’m interested in Lutz the things people actually talk about on a day-to-day basis with their neighbors.”

Lutz is running for the District 2 seat on city council in the 2019 election. He currently works as a service leader for an oil and gas service company, where he has been employed for eight years. Lutz moved to Arvada three years ago, drawn to the city for the many friendly-family activities it has to offer, he said.

While he hopes to see city council address large-scale issues in the community, he also believes council members and staff can do a better job listening when citizens bring smaller issues to the table, such as requests to update infrastructure at individual intersections.

“I would be looking forward to the phone ringing and people calling me with smaller things,” he said. “And some of those things are things I notice — I have a keen attentional to detail.”

If elected, he hopes to quickly address these smaller concerns by in-

He aims to ensure housing development does not outpace the city’s need for housing; to promote commercial development, especially in areas such as west Arvada; and to verify that, should the city choose to contract a single waste hauler, the hauler chosen provides the best possible pricing and customer service.

He would also look into improving transportation and reducing traffic congestion, he said. He suggested the city collaborate with RTD to create additional, and more wide-reaching, Arvada bus routes.

The Jefferson Parkway, a toll road that planners aim to build through northwest Arvada, might also help solve the city’s traffic problem, he said.

However, the plan “is one of those things that constantly needs to be evolved,” he said, referring to potential safety concerns. A portion of the parkway site recently tested for elevated levels of plutonium waste from former nuclear weapons plant Rocky Flats. Analyzers are working to confirm the test results’ validity.

Council should collaborate with parkway planners to address citizen concerns, perhaps by realigning part of the parkway, Lutz said, even as some planners have said they are against the idea.

“You can’t just say that’s absolutely out. Plans always need to be adjusted,” he said. “We need to look at the next steps and make sure we are taking the right steps.”

Meet T.O. Owens, council candidate for District 2

When T.O. Owens drives around Arvada, he sees the Fitzmorris Recreation Center, Griffith Station Park, Ralston-Central Park — one project after another that makes the city a great place to live, he said.

Those projects are also ventures that he himself worked on over the years.

“One of the things that gives me the most joy is when I see all these projects. They’re really making people’s lives better,” he said.

After working on a variety of such projects and serving on several community committees, Owens is running for the District 2 seat on city council.

An Arvada resident for about 20 years, Owens serves as chairman for the city planning commission.

He became involved in the city after following the advice of his wife, who suggested he work to improve the community, and following his “need to serve,” which he says he developed while attending the Air Force Academy.

As chairman of the planning commission, Owens says he emphasized organization, and streamlining processes by making sure each team member “has an area of focus” for every project.

If elected, Owens said he would use that organizational experience to address several key issues in Arvada, including transportation. He would like to work with city engineers to identify two or three of the city’s most impactful transportation projects to potentially be funded by bond money.

Owens also approves of the Jeffer-

son Parkway, a planned toll road that would run through northwest Arvada, near the Rocky Flats site. However, he would not approve of the parkway if testing shows the route is unsafe. Testers are currently working to verify previous test results that showed elevated plutonium levels in the parkway’s path.

Hoping to create more attainable housing opportunities, he would adOwens vocate for the relaxation of certain restrictions, like parking or building height requirements, for developers who would bring attainable units to the city. Owens would only favor high-density housing in neighborhoods that can accommodate the number of people who would move in, he said.

He would also like to create better access to recreation for residents in neighborhoods like Columbine and Tennyson Knolls.

His organizational skills would again be useful as the city’s homeless population increases, he said.

To promote safety in Arvada, “when we see people law-breaking, we need to fairly enforce the laws,” he said, including by continuing current efforts to keep areas like Olde Town safe.

He would also prioritize connecting homeless individuals with organizations that provide resources, such as meals and job openings, and encourage closer collaboration among those organizations.

“One way would be to offer a monthly meeting place (for the groups),” he said. “Incidentally homeless families can almost always benefit from a hand up. I would help to organize that.”

Meet Lauren Simpson, council candidate for District 2

When Lauren Simpson decided to run for city council, her friends and family weren’t surprised. The Arvada resident has always been interested in politics and currently works as a public affairs officer for the Canadian Consulate, handling media relations, speech-writing and collaboration with national groups to “advance United States-Canada relations at the state level,” she said.

But Simpson said she surprised herself. She’d never wanted to run for office, but when she was looking over Arvada’s 2019 city council candidates, “the first thing that struck me was that we didn’t have that voice for young families.”

Determined to be that voice, Simpson joined the race and is now one of three candidates for the District 2 seat.

If elected, one of her priorities would be to provide support to the city’s increasing homeless population, she said.

Her perspective on the issue was shaped by her teenage years. When Simpson was in high school, her father, who had been diagnosed with mental illness, left their family home and lived in homelessness for three years.

During that time, Simpson developed a strong compassion for the homeless and a better understanding for what support they may need, she said.

“I don’t believe you have a right to commit crimes. I am for ensuring that public safety comes first,” she said. “However, we need to have compassion and work with our state and county partners, as well as our

partners in the faith-based community, to ensure people are connected with services.”

She would also like to work with the city to create density housing and bring more affordable units to Arvada. She added that she would only be in favor of building such housing in neighborhoods where high-density developments would fit in Simpson aesthetically.

Simpson would also work to reduce traffic, partially by advocating for new strategies, like a circulator bus to stop at major destinations in Arvada.

In addition, she would like to bring many possibilities to the table that, currently, may not be on residents’ radars. For instance, she would like to work with the city to create an arts district in Arvada, most likely by rehabilitating an area that already needs to be updated, she said.

As a council member, she would advocate for the establishment of at least one hospital within city limits. For Arvada residents, the nearest hospital is in Denver or Wheat Ridge; years ago, she herself went to a hospital in downtown Denver to have her daughter.

Just as her experiences have heightened her awareness of certain issues, she believes other council members can each bring new possibilities to the forefront. Simpson looks forward to encouraging such discussion and promoting strong collaboration, as exists within the current council, she said.

“I would like to continue that tradition and raise the bar,” she said, “and to complement the other voices that are there.”

ent community as a grandparent herself, and through her work as president of the Jeffco Action Center, she said.

Hoping to find a similar conference in Arvada and the Denver area, Whiteley soon realized there wasn’t one — so she took it upon herself to change that. Her goal: to get out the message that grandparents can, and should, have a bigger influence in their grandchildren’s lives.

“It’s a different world these days than it was even 50 years ago,” she said. “A lot of grandparents have said they thought they were doing a good job, and what they’ve found is, there’s a whole lot more they could be doing.”

This year’s conference will include 18 sessions for attendees to choose from and a Q&A segment with event speakers, Whiteley said.

The sessions cover a variety of topics, from learning to connect to younger generations to planning for retirement.

The conference aims to provide grandparents with the “new tools” they need to be a positive influence on their family’s lives in the modern age, said keynote speaker Brenda Snailum, professor at Denver Seminary.

“There’s a growing population of grandparents who really need some extra support,” she said. “I love

the (conference’s) vision on being intentional grandparents. I really don’t know of any other organizations that have that same vision.”

Additionally, the conference is part of a growing movement for “the recognition for grand-families,” or grandparents raising their grandchildren, said conference speaker Rachel Mahnke. Mahnke will be leading sessions on raising grandchildren and on connecting with family members through art therapy.

She began her work reaching out to grandparents after she and her husband adopted two grandchildren of their own, she said.

“After what we’ve went through, we can hopefully make others’ journey a little easier,” she said.

Whiteley added that, with 18 sessions, the conference is sure to have something for grandparents of any age in any situation.

efferson County voters will have to make a couple of decisions concerning the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) this November.

One is Colorado Proposition CC. This ballot question will ask if the state should be allowed to retain excess revenue, which it is currently required to refund under TABOR, to go to transportation and education.

Specific to Jefferson County, all of the county’s voters will be deciding on ballot measure 1A. Here are the details on Jeffco 1A.

Why are we being asked to vote on this now?

Earlier this year, the county identified that it was facing a financial challenge for the year 2020, attributing it to the need to keep up with an increasing demand for services because of population growth.

About $16.1 million is the amount the county identified that it lacked for balanced 2020 budget and to maintain an appropriate reserve fund next year.

To achieve that amount, the county proposed a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund.

The general fund is the county’s principle operating fund that is financed primarily by property taxes. There are 15 departments funded by the general fund.

Rather than budget cuts, de-brucing the county’s TABOR limits came up as a possible solution to the county’s financial challenges. On July 23 the Jefferson County commissioners — Casey Tighe, Leslie Dahlkemper and Libby Szabo — unanimously approved putting the Jeffco 1A question on the November 2019 ballot.

What does the county’s mill levy have to do with Jeffco 1A? The mill levy is the tax rate applied to the assessed value of a property. One mill equals one dollar per $1,000 dollars of assessed property value.

Jefferson County is currently authorized to collect a maximum mill levy of 21.478.

If Jeffco 1A passes, the measure’s ballot language states that $16.1 million above the current TABOR cap will be collected the first year. This is the amount that the county identified it needs to avoid budget cuts in 2020.

In the years 2020-2026, Jeffco 1A would allow the county to collect the full amount of its authorized county mill levy.

Argument for a yes vote on Jeffco 1A: Beginning in 2016, the county starting hitting the TABOR cap each year, said Mary O’Neil, the county’s director of strategy, planning and analysis. But for the 15 years prior, the county made voluntary mill levy reductions, O’Neil added, as a sign of fiscal stewardship.

A yes vote would not give the county the ability to raise taxes, so much as just keep the revenue that has already been approved.

Argument for a no vote on Jeffco 1A: The ballot language does not clearly state that Jeffco 1A will let the county raise the tax bills of its residents, said Natalie Menten, volunteer coordinator for the grassroots organization, No Jeffco Tax Hike.

Affordable housing is already a challenge, Menten said, and Jeffco 1A would make housing more expensive. She added that businesses that have to pay more taxes on their property will reflect onto consumers, contributing to a higher cost of living.

How will the money be spent if Jeffco 1A passes?

Should Jeffco 1A pass, the money would be used to fund the cost of county government and to maintain the county services currently provided. According to the ballot measure’s language, all spending would be reviewed and decided on by the Board of County Commissioners as part of the annual budget process.

The services bullet pointed in Jeffco 1A’s language are as follows: Providing for the safety of the public including maintaining adequate jail beds, staffing the District Attorney’s Office, adequate patrol personnel, and wildfire mitigation; Maintaining roads, bridges and other new transportation improvements; Preserving public facilities and infrastructure including building security and maintenance; and Providing services traditionally offered by Jefferson County and other Colorado county governments and statutorily required services.

Argument for a yes vote on Jeffco 1A: The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office notes that in order to achieve a seven percent reduction to its 2020 budget, it would have to cut its budget by $6.7 million. This means, Sheriff Jeff Shrader said, an entire floor of the jail would have to be shut down which would lead to jail beds being reduced, thus limiting the amount of offenders the jail would be able to house.

“The sheriff is not the only public safety official impacted by this,” Shrader said to Golden City Council during the general public comment period on Sept. 12. “My concern is that (the proposed budget cuts) will affect the entirety of Jefferson County, in terms of the quality of life that we have.”

Argument for a no vote on Jeffco 1A: Menten argues that some of the language in the ballot measure is misleading.

“The county implies it (the money) will go to specific areas,” Menten said. “But the last bullet point in the language leaves it open for the county to spend it anywhere.”

Are there expiration dates for Jeffco 1A? Jefferson County commissioners discussed in length an expiration — or sunset — on the initiative but settled on a sunset after seven years.

This means, should Jeffco 1A pass, the county could keep and spend or reserve all revenue, regardless of revenue type, that it collects in the years 2020 to 2026.

A second portion of Jeffco 1A says that beginning in 2027, only property taxes would be subject to the TABOR cap. The county could keep revenue from grants, fines, interest and fees, up to the Excess Local Revenue Cap.

Hunter Klein is looking forward to the day that he doesn’t have to play what he calls “the parking game” when he visits Jefferson County Open Space parks.

Klein of Golden enjoys climbing and caving, and, for Klein, usually those excursions include meeting up with a group of friends at a preplanned spot.

However, the parking for those spots are often full by the time everyone in the group gets there, Klein said.

The app “will help us plan better,” Klein said.

The app that Klein refers to is newly offered by Jeffco Open Space through a partnership with Colorado Springs’ Lot Spot. What the Lot Spot app does is provide real-time information to Jeffco Open Space park visitors. The app is available for free for both Android and Apple.

“We understand that we may be parking challenged at a few of our trailheads,” said Mary Ann Bonnell, manager of visitor services for Jeffco Open Space, during her presentation to the Jefferson County Commissioners during a staff briefings meeting on Sept. 24. “We can’t make more

However, in time, Open Space plans on expanding the technology to its other parks.

“We’ll continue to listen to feedback,” Robbins said, “and make sure it’s working properly.”

The equipment that sends the information is a solar-powered camera mounted on a pole that counts the number of vehicles that enter and leave the park’s lot.

In addition to providing real-time information on the availability of parking spaces, the app also allows park visitors to report a variety of errors, Robbins said. For example, if a person arrives to an Open Space park, and the app had inaccurately counted the number of spaces available, a person can report the wrong information and the app will autocorrect. There are also options to report illegal parking, a vehicle break-in and even heavy traffic or an accident on the commute to the park, Robbins said.

On the staff side, the app will help Open Space with gathering long-term analytics, Bonnell said.

“It helps us understand, do we need a bigger lot,” she said, “or do we need to just encourage people to spread out their visiting hours. If this lot stays busy all the time, it may mean we need more spaces overall.”

The app can also help staff with enforcement in the parks, Robbins said. Most of the parks open one hour before sunrise and close one hour after sunset. So, for example, perhaps the camera detects a car parked in the lot in the middle of the night, Robbins said. The app would help staff become aware that there is vehicle in the lot afterhours, and staff could respond appropriately, such as sending a ranger out to investigate.

And it doesn’t necessarily always mean the car is parked there because of illegal activity, Robbins added. It could be an emergency and the person found themselves in an area that had no cell service to make a 911 call.

“This is great information — not just for our visitors but also for us,” Bonnell said. “Nobody else is doing this in their parks. We’re the first ones to try it. (And) we’re very excited about this innovation and trying this technology out.”

jaywalk. I return shopping carts to the store. I speed. I stop for stop signs on my bike. I wear white after Labor Day. I call – or at least text – people ALCHEMY on their birthdays (sometimes belated).

This is part of the authentic me, part of my personal code of values and morals.

And as I contemplate my own birthday this week, I’m reflecting on recent discussions that came about Andrea Doray because of a TV commercial for an auto maker.

Perhaps you’ve seen it … a young

The most probable scenario for me, though, is the one that played out in the ad. Just as I am ready to make my break, the green light flashes and solves my dilemma.

In our conversations, however, I’m affectionately challenged for this straight-arrow stance. What if the law – or the rule or the social convention – doesn’t make sense in a given situation, they ask … would I then break the law?

Okay, here I must admit that my likely wait at this stoplight is based more on the possibility that I might get caught, than on any reverence for the law itself … which, by the way, is also foremost in my mind when I jaywalk and, especially, when I speed.

On one hand, I am pretty much law abiding – jaywalking and speeding notwithstanding. On the other hand, at a red light on a deserted road in the dead of night, I might go through the light.

conversation and would support the consensus of the group when it was clear that what the group wanted was what was best for the city. We did not always see eye-toeye, but what I appreciated was his openness to listen to other perspectives. In fact, when I lived in Colorado Springs and the rest of my family was here, I blasted north multiple times a month that once in a while did result in a roadside chat and a subsequent exchange with a judge.

I don’t speed like that now … I’m much more wary of both the financial and points consequences. But I do follow the flow of traffic, which means that, yes, on occasion I do exceed the speed limit.

Something Trump knows that the Broncos have yet to master

was listening to a little sports talk radio last week, as I am wont to do, and something struck me. One of the things the fellas — three of them — were talking about was the imperative for a football team to create chaos in their opponents. Unless you’re the Broncos of the late 90’s, who HITTING could line up, tell the HOME other team “here’s what’s coming,” and then beat them anyway, you have to do something to cause your opponent confusion. Then operate in the spaces left by the confusion.

That’s how winning football is played.

Obviously, not Michael Alcorn something the Broncos have mastered yet.

It’s something we used to try to coach into our baseball teams, too.

You put a runner in motion, you lay down a bunt at a weird time, you do a delayed steal … sometimes you can force the other team into a mistake. Of course, these days, nobody does any of that — they’re all just swinging as hard as they can trying to hit out of the ballpark. But, once upon a time,

the game was played with that sort of strategy in mind.

Of course, this is nothing new. Like much of sports strategy, all this is simply borrowed from the military.

Clausewitz preached overwhelming force — that’s what the Broncos of the late 90’s had going for them. But, not too many teams bring General Patton’s Army to the field on a weekly basis, so they have to depend on speed and guile.

Unless you’re Jacksonville in the second half on Sunday. Then you can just push your opponents around the field however you want to.

But most teams have to put the pieces in place, do something, and, before the opponent has the opportunity to figure out what you’ve done, do your next thing. Your opponents will always be caught on their heels, reacting to what you’re doing and chasing you. It’s known as mastering the OODA Loop. It’s how U.S. Special Forces accomplish unbelievable objectives around the world in teams of 5, 10 or 20 men and women, and it’s a beautiful thing to behold when it’s executed according to the design.

new ideas to come to light. I have been impressed with what T.O. has learned from walking neighborhoods, and how he has kept himself open to new perspectives, while staying true to his values. I truly believe T.O. Owens would be an asset to the Arvada City Council.

have things happen on something resembling a schedule, with fairly predictable ranges of outcomes that they can manipulate through talent or industry. It’s a rare person who thrives in unstable conditions. For instance, did you know that, adjusted for inflation and on a per-capita basis, more millionaires were created during the Great Depression than at any other time period in American history? The people who recognized the collapse of certain structures as an opportunity thrived; the rest, not so much.

And it’s even playing out that way in politics. I have a difficult time believing our President is truly the undisciplined, angry 12-year old he so often comes across as. His entire life, he has embraced a certain element of chaos, and thrived within it. That’s why the multiple bankruptcies, the multiple marriages, the subsequent multiple grand achievements … It’s almost as if he manipulates his world to fall into a state of chaos, because

Then please cast your mayoral vote for Harriet Hall, who has demonstrated a commitment to smart growth. And let’s not discount the possibility that he — and the rest of us along with him — are dupes in a classic Russian counter-intelligence operation. Play both sides (WikiLeaks and Trump), make both sides mistrust the other (election tampering), and sit back and laugh as your enemy tears itself apart trying to neutralize “the other side.”

Now, the important question: how can we get Vladimir Putin to start calling plays for the Broncos?

Isn’t keeping your money a tax increase by default?

Proposition CC will keep your tax refunds “forever”, so this becomes a permanent tax increase. The Jefferson County question will be for seven (7) years. These tax increases will be passed on to you directly and indirectly by businesses and landlords. They will grow as the years go by. Are you willing to allow this increase, and enable government to defang TABOR, the only defense we have against government tax grabs? I am not. Will the next effort eliminate TABOR altogether?

Do we have any guarantees as to how this money will be spent? We are perhaps the only state in the nation that has some control over government tax increases, are you willing to give this up. Please read about these issues which will be on your November 5 ballot. It’s your choice.

‘Cathartic’ rage rooms welcome customers to break objects, relieve stress

At the pair’s rage room in southwest Denver, customers can take a crowbar, baseball bat, sledgehammer and other intense tools to lay waste to objects provided for them, such as a car hood.

The business — which just opened near the start of September — sees upbeat events such as bachelorette parties, birthdays, corporate events and couples’ date nights, but it’s often a way

illiam Shakespeare once wisely observed that the course of true love never did run smooth, but legendary playwright Neil Simon knew that didn’t mean the bumpy road couldn’t be filled with laughs. Case in point, his 1968 trilogy of love stories — “Plaza Suite.”

The show provides a glimpse at three different couples, each with their own stories, who all stay at the same suite at New York’s Plaza Hotel at different times. Some of the couples are funny, others bittersweet, but all human in the way only Simon can create.

COMING “All three have ATTRACTIONS their own style, but they’re all quintessentially Simon,” said actor Kate Gleason.

“You can laugh and be moved in his shows, because Simon is a master of dramedy.”

Clarke Reader Gleason is joined by Gareth Saxe in playing all three couples in “Plaza Suite” at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. in Arvada, from Oct. 4 through Nov. 10. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 1 p.m. on Wednesday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Each of the three acts is essentially its own mini-play. The first features Sam and Karen Nash, a married couple returning to their honeymoon suite to try and bring a little romance back to the relationship. The second act is about movie producer Jesse and his high school love, Muriel. In the final act, married couple Roy and Norma are at the Plaza to celebrate their daughter’s wedding.

“Simon creates these very different characters, but doesn’t lose the humans in the process,” Saxe said. “The show is a great offering because it showcases all of Simon’s gifts and what he is able to do as a dramatist.”

Having to play three distinct characters in the same show can certainly be a challenge, but both Gleason and Saxe say they have thoroughly enjoyed getting to find the life in the characters. And while Simon is rightly recognized for his comedic chops, there are certainly moments of real humanity to be found.

“There’s romance in all three, but there is some real bite (to the writing), and broken people, especially in the first act,” Gleason said.

“People will experience humor and love and bittersweet relationships.”

It’s a phenomenon that may have become popular in Japan in 2008, according to national news outlets.

Since then, rage rooms have spread to countries worldwide, including to many cities in the United States.

Drew Neilson, an owner and founder of Smash It Breakroom, went to a rage room in Australia. As he waited for one to come to Denver, he and co-founder Dustin Gagne decided to make it themselves.

that Shawn Worthy, a professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver, echoed.

General frustration arising from lack of upward economic mobility in the country could play into that, said Worthy, a professor of human services with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.

“I think particularly our youth, young people, don’t have a lot of outlets,” said Worthy, adding that traditional outlets for emotions from generations past may be less common. “They spend lots of time on video games and technology, where maybe past generations might have been playing sports outdoors, where you would have been able to demonstrate those urges in an acceptable way.”

Taking out frustration by breaking objects can be viewed as an example of a coping mechanism called sublimation, Worthy said.

“Sublimation means taking a socially unacceptable impulse and using that impulse in a more socially acceptable way,” Worthy said. It’s similar to “someone going to a boxing

“My wife’s a teacher, and some of our friends are teachers,” said Malache, who lives in Castle Rock. “They have stressful jobs, and they don’t always get the recognition.”

At another establishment with a rage room — Axe Whooping, an axthrowing location — stressors take a front seat, too. People can write out their frustrations in chalk on the wall before letting them out, said Curtis Roundtree, the business’s owner and co-founder.

“A lot of people have said it’s really cathartic,” Roundtree said of the rage room. His business at 437 N. Broadway has been open for axthrowing for about two months, and its rage room has been open for a month.

Smash It Breakroom, at 790 W. Evans Ave., offers a one-person session of 20 minutes for $45 and a twoperson session for 20 minutes for $86.

Other times, and group outings, are available at other prices.

For Malache, rage rooms — much like Denver’s “cat cafe” — are another out-of-the-box attraction.

“I like seeking out these weird things to do, especially in Denver because there are these unorthodox things you can do,” Malache said.

“I think that’s what makes the city special.”

Emerald pest continues march south Ash Borers found in trees at 128th and Zuni

Westminster City Forester John Kasza said he was instantly worried about the city’s trees when he learned that the Emerald Ash Borer had slipped past a six year quarantine last month.

“They found it Broomfield, pretty much right across the street,” Kasza said. “That’s why we began looking, even more closely than we normally do.”

Sure enough, Kasza said, inspections and later testing proved his concern: the green pests, responsible for killing Ash trees in cities across the eastern United States, had spread to Westminster.

“It wasn’t bad enough to kill all the trees there, but it will shortly,” he said.

Kasza said he and his crews inspected the trees in the Willow Run Shopping Center parking lot, pulling back bark from trunks and cutting sample branches for laboratory testing.

On Aug. 29, they confirmed that the shopping center’s trees were infested with Ash Borers.

“We did one inspection closer up in two trees and found it,” he said.

No predators

The Emerald Ash Borer is a non-native wood-boring beetle responsible for the death and decline of tens of millions of ash trees in the United States and Canada. As a non-native insect, it lacks predators to keep it in check.

Westminster has about 69,000 ash trees in the city limits — about 15 percent of the city’s total tree population.

“It’s like saying one out of every seven trees in Westminster is an ash tree,” he said. “There are a lot of them out there and we know that not ever ash tree is going to die.”

He recommended homeowners remove small, younger ash trees or old and diseased trees.

“But if you have good healthy tree, it’s much less expensive to treat the tree instead of replacing it,” Kasza said.

He recommended homeowners apply emamectin benzoate, an insecticide that was invented in 2001.

“It’s the most effective, up to 99 percent, and has the fewest environmental risks,” he said. “It’s too late in the year to do it now, but next summer they should have their ash trees treated.”

He said it’s best to apply the insecticide once the trees have leafed out.

“There are other insects, like the lilac ash borer that doesn’t kill the tree outright but causes some dead branches and most ash trees in Westminster have that,” Kasza said.

“And there are other issues, with the

Yarn group collecting warm items for Family Tree Hats, scarves and gloves are especially needed, as are baby blankets STAFF REPORT

The yarn and needle group from Standley Lake Library is collecting items for those in need of warm items this winter.

Residents can make or donate completed, handmade items such as knitted, crocheted or sewn mittens, hats, scarves, small animals and blankets to assist Family Tree. The library has patterns available for people to take, or they are welcome to use their own. New purchased items also are welcome.

“We are always in need of hats, scarves and gloves, especially for men and teen males,” Family Tree Development Coordinator Tami Mawhir said in a news release. “There is also a need for baby blankets.”

Very soft and warm yarn or fleece and flannel are suggested for baby and children items.

Items for the caring community challenge should be placed in a plastic bag labeled with the appropriate target age and dropped off at the library until Nov. 7. Family Tree will do a ceremonial pickup of collected items during the yarn and needle group’s monthly meeting Nov. 7 at the Standley Lake Library.

“I have known about Family Tree and the good work they do for years,” Neila Achter, the yarn and needle group’s arts coordinator, said in a news release. “I know that Family Tree has

a good reputation and will use the items where most needed.”

Family Tree is a Wheat Ridge-based nonprofit incorporated in 1976 that provides innovative and life-changing services designed to end homelessness, domestic violence and child abuse.

“The library’s yarn and needle art’s group is so happy to be partnering with Family Tree,” Achter said in the release. “We look forward to promoting and fulfilling this community need.

We appreciate the library for being a vehicle to make it happen, and we appreciate the members of the public who join us in this effort.

This is something our group really enjoys and finds rewarding so we hope other groups might join us in this effort.”

Standley Lake Library’s Yarn and Needle Arts group began in 2014 and meets from 5:30-8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The informal group is comprised of all skill levels and works under the guidance of Achter.

This is the group’s third year of completing community challenge events. In 2018, together with the public, the group created 1,275 items for the Arvada Fire District. In 2017, group members knit baby items for Warm Hearts, Warm Babies, an Arvada-based charity. And in 2016, they contributed 175 chemo caps to the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center.

Three-time summer reading champion shares secrets to success Library program sees increased participation in fifth annual contest

Jefferson County Public Library’s Summer Reading program is nothing new.

But every year, there’s something different to look forward to, said marketing manager Cindy Matthews - whether it’s more participants, livelier competition or the endless opportunities for residents to log reading minutes.

“We include audio books, Facebook, Twitter, fan fiction,” she said. “We’re raising awareness of how much you read.”

In keeping with its tradition started in 2015, the program included a reading competition between schools.

The contest measures the percentage of a school’s students who meet the reading-minute goal for their age group.

This year’s winning schools were Adams Elementary Preschool with a 93% finisher rate; Glennon Heights Elementary with a 76% rate; Bell Middle School with a 17% rate; Arvada High School with a 13% rate; and Addenbrooke Classical Academy

with a 38% rate. Bell and Addenbrooke were both repeat champions, having won the competition three times each.

Ask Bell’s digital teacher librarian Julie Schlosser and principal Michele DeAndrea, and they’ll say the frequent victories stem from a variety of tactics and technologies.

Schlosser joined the school’s staff in 2018 and was determined to keep up the school’s strong summer reading streak, she said. As the summer drew closer, she created a Google Classroom page for the contest and promoted the competition during the school’s morning announcements.

Additionally, the school brought in teen services librarian Brittany Dolezal from the Golden Library to speak on the program, and providing Chromebooks to help students register.

All this has been to help students combat the so-called summer slide — where children lose reading proficiency when they do not read over summer. Bell staff has always been avid about helping their students avoid that setback, DeAndrea said.

But, she added, it’s not just about promoting what’s good for kids. It’s also about promoting what’s fun.

“There’s a world in books that kids can escape to,” she said. “Summer can get very long, but reading can shorten those summers.”

miles were contagious at Trailblazer Stadium on Sept. 24 for Jefferson County students as they gathered to play soccer. The day was part of Jeffco Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jeffco Adapted Athletics program. The program gives Jeffco students with disabilities a chance to learn to play and compete in sports. Jeffco Adapted Athletics holds an event each month that focuses on particular sport.

Green Mountain football gets bounce-back win over

LAKEWOOD — It took a less than 30 seconds to turn a one-score game into a 17-point lead for the Green Mountain football team Sept. 27 at Trailblazer Stadium.

A late first-half field goal by junior Nathan Hunsinger and a 40-yard touchdown run by Green Mountain senior quarterback Trey Towndrown on the opening play from scrimmage in the third quarter gave the Rams all the push they needed.

“We always try to focus on getting points at the end of the half and then getting the ball back. Bill Belichick calls it the magic eight minutes,” Green Mountain coach Jesse German said after the Rams’ 36-13 victory over Standley Lake. “That was huge momentum deal for us.”

An interception in the final minute of the first half by junior Allen Ortiz set up the big 33-yard field goal by Hunsinger in the final seconds before halftime to put Green Mountain — ranked No. 6 in the Class 3A CHSAANow.com football poll — ahead 10-0 going into the locker room.

“I was just reading my keys,” Ortiz said of the interception with less than a minute to play in the first half. “I saw the receiver go out. It was an easy pick.

We had run that a thousand times in practice. It was awesome.”

A nice kickoff return by senior Trey Corkin put the Rams into Standley Lake territory to start the second half.

Towndrow ran in the first of three second-half touchdown runs to put Green Mountain ahead 17-0 … 20 seconds into the third quarter.

“We were slow, but we knew we would blow up soon,” Towndrow said of the

Towndrow had touchdown runs of 40, 3 and 19 yards after halftime. He also had a 44-yard scoring pass to junior Austin Peterson for the lone touchdown in the first half.

“He (Towndrow) can score from anywhere,” German said of his talented quarterback. “The linemen did a good job getting hats-on-hats for him. He is that game-changer. We are blessed to have them.”

Senior Jacob Chavez also had a 19yard touchdown run late in the third

quarter to help the Rams amass a 36-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.

German also pointed out the key goal-line stand his defense had in the first half. Standley Lake had a long 12-play drive and had third-down and goal at about the 1-foot line. However, a penalty and then a failed field goal attempt that turned into a pass attempt on fourth down kept the Gators off the scoreboard.

Standley Lake (1-3 record) did prevent the shutout with a defensive touchdown on a pick-6 by junior Pete Biller midway through the fourth quarter. The Gators also added a late touchdown run, but

Green Mountain (3-1) came away with the win over the Class 4A squad from Westminster.

“We definitely came into this game with a different mindset from last week,” Ortiz said referring to the 19-15 road loss to No. 8 Lutheran last week.

“We had that bitter taste in our mouths.

We want to come out and show where we are at. We had one of our best weeks of practice.”

GOLDEN — It’s a bad idea to hit the ball in the area of Golden senior centerfielder Mackenzie Middleton.

A little advice to Class 4A softball after Middleton threw out runners at second, third and home plate the the top-4 Class 4A CHSAANow. com rankings showdown Sept. 27 at Golden High School.

“I’ve been there (centerfield) for four years now. I’ve played there every game,” Makenzie said after the Demons (17-1, 4-1 in 4A Jeffco League) edged Wheat Ridge 9-8 in an absolute thriller. “I just go out there

and play. I’m just throwing the ball.”

No. 4 Wheat Ridge (14-4, 4-2) grabbed an early 2-0 lead with RBI singles by Lee and Izzie Quezada in the top of the second inning, but Makenzie threw out Lee at second base and Izzie at third base to prevent more damage.

The Demons answered offensively scoring six unanswered runs through the bottom of the third to the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Makenzie and her twin sister Makayla Middleton both belted 2-run home runs.

Golden also won the two teams’ Sept. 24 game, 8-2.

“It hurts that Golden got us twice,” Wheat Ridge coach Jamie Heflin said. “It’s tough playing against the Middletons because you have to choose what you want to do.”

The Middletons combined to go 4-for-5 from the plate with four RBIs

and four runs scored. Sophomore Caitlyn Stevens helped out with a solo home run and senior pitcher Emma Graham helped herself out with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

However, Wheat Ridge responded with a four-run sixth inning to tie the game 6-6. Junior Jalesa Lujan had a huge 2-run double and junior Aliyah Rothstein had an RBI single to tie things up 6-6.

It looked like the Farmers would grab the lead with Lee Quezada ripped an RBI single up the middle, but Makenzie threw out Lujan at the plate to end the inning.

“It’s been the mainstay of what we try to do here,” Herbers said of the Demons’ defense. “Emma struggled a little bit today and she knew it, but this is that situation where she had SEE SOFTBALL, P23

Golden’s offense stepped up again with a 3-run inning thanks to backto-back doubles by Makayla and senior Molly Hord. A throwing error by the Farmers allowed two runs to score to make it a 9-6 game.

Wheat Ridge sophomore Aaliyah Arellano belted a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, but a line drive by junior Carly Storrer was caught by Makayla to end the game.

“That was insane,” Makenzie said.

“We had to make so many good plays.

Wheat Ridge hit the ball and we had to make the plays.”

The Demons and Farmers were back in action Saturday. Golden defeated Green Mountain and Wheat Ridge took care of business against

Standley Lake.

“Our team isn’t going to respond negatively to this,” Heflin said. “They know they competed and the game could have gone either way. I don’t think we’ll have a letdown at all.”

Herbers believes playing after such an emotional game will be a benefit.

“If they want to go deep this is one of those postseason type of situations,” Herbers said. “You have to play a hard team on Friday, figure out a way to get to bed, re-energize and play again the next morning.”

A third go-around between Golden and Wheat Ridge wouldn’t be surprising.

“Wheat Ridge is a top-5 (4A) team in the state. They’ll be there in the end,” Herbers said. “If we want to make a run we have to beat the best.”

rom a cell phone to an 8-track — not to mention lots of flip flops, sunglasses and athletic balls — those who worked on the efforts of cleaning up Clear Creek on Sept. 26 found a lot of random objects. In total, about 150 people volunteered for MolsonCoors’ annual river cleanup.

Downtown Golden gets about 350 thousand visitors each year, and that includes people who come for Coors Brewery tours, said Theresa Worsham, Golden’s

sustainability director.

“This event every fall helps us catch up with the impacts of tourism and keep our city clean,” Worsham said.

And for Coors, it’s about being a part of the community, said Craig Poupore, the Coors Brewery’s vice president of Golden valley operations.

“It involves water, which is critical to our business as well as the greater Colorado community as a whole,” Poupore said. “Anything we can do to help improve the future for both the community and the company is beneficial for all.”
