Meet Marc Williams, candidate for mayor

For attorney and Arvada Mayor Marc Williams, city hall isn’t so different from the courtroom. As mayor, he has drawn on his legal experience to ensure best practices during public meetings, negotiate financial agreements between the city and other parties and, ultimately, “save our taxpayers millions and millions of dollars,” he said.

The overlap between the two positions may come as no surprise; after Williams all, Williams got involved with both for the same reason.

“I believe my role is helping people. I love this city,” he said.

Having served two terms as mayor since winning his first mayoral election in 2011, Williams is now seeking re-election in 2019.

Williams was born in Colorado and was part of the first graduating class of Littleton’s Heritage High School, where he participated as a member of the school’s debate team and editor of the school newspaper.

He attended the University of Colorado Law School and in 1979, he began as a law clerk at Sonheim and Helm, now Helm, Less & Williams, at which he continues to practice law. Through his work with the firm, he has developed a strong sense of the inner workings of the Arvada community, he said.

He soon found himself getting involved with the community in other ways, including as a trustee on the Jefferson County Library Board and as an at-large city council member.

As mayor, he has worked with council members and city staff on issues of safety, transportation and

attainable housing. While he has been in office, the city has built three community police stations, increased funding for roadwork and removed barriers to attainable housing projects, he said.

He has also worked to promote cohesiveness between city council members, he said.

“We’ve done a pretty good job of keeping the politics out of city hall,” he said. “Even when we disagree, we disagree agreeably.”

If re-elected, Williams plans to prioritize reducing traffic congestion on local roads, including through the Jefferson Parkway, a toll road to be built through the northwest portion of Arvada. The project will not go forward without the OK of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Department of Energy, he added. After a soil sample from the proposed parkway route tested for high levels of plutonium, parkway planners are awaiting the organizations’ direction on next steps.

Williams says he also aims to find ways to meet the needs of the community’s growing homeless population and preserve the safe environment of Olde Town.

His eight years of experience as mayor have well equipped him to address the many issues “that are not just Arvada issues,” but areawide issues, he said.

“I’ve developed a terrific relationship with the mayors in the region,” he said. “It takes that level of involvement to really serve Arvada best.”

Dave Palm believes in putting the history of Arvada in residents’ hands.

As a director on the Arvada Historical Society board, Palm has put dozens of hours into digitizing Arvada’s past and putting hard copies of photos and documents online, the medium Arvadans use most, he said.

Now running for mayor in the 2019 election, the long-time Arvada resident’s passion for town history shows in his Palm campaign promises: “The foundation for everything is to preserve the history of the town,” he said.

Dave Palm has lived in Arvada on and off since childhood. He attended Secrest Elementary School, North Arvada Middle School and Arvada High School.

He started his career in the 1970s as a car salesman, which led to a number of finance management positions in the following decades. Palm and his son now own Hackberry Hill Communications, an Arvada-based repair, production and design company.

Through his work with the Arvada Historical Society, on which he is serving his second four-year term, Palm has worked behind the scenes of several city events and initiatives, including the city’s annual Arvada Harvest Festival and Parade.

“redirect the city to the purpose it was created for,” he said, partially by scaling back accelerated growth and city involvement with publicprivate partnerships.

His positions are drawn from decades of different life experiences, he said.

After he and his father worked at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, he seeks to raise public awareness of the potential dangers of the construction of the Jefferson Parkway, a proposed toll road that would run adjacent to the site of the former plant.

After experiencing homelessness for six years, he aims to create new strategies to address Arvada’s number of “career vagrants,” or those who live on the street but could afford a residence, he said.

After watching his parents progress from living in a screened-in porch in Denver to buying an Arvada home, he believes in redirecting tax money that may otherwise go to attainable housing projects.

“My parents didn’t start in Arvada. You grew into these things,” he said. “Every house in Arvada is attainable; you just have to earn it.”

Additionally, as mayor, he said he would advocate for the removal of the city’s ban on retail marijuana sales, that could generate tax revenue to improve local roads.

Currently, he said, Arvadans can purchase recreational marijuana in neighboring cities like Edgewater and Wheat Ridge, leaving other communities with money that could be in Arvada’s pockets.

He would also promote the establishment of a city ombudsman to assist residents with day-to-day disagreements they have with the city.

“I don’t see this as politics. I’m not the guy with all the answers; I’m the guy with all the questions,” he said, “and I want to be the citizens’ representative.”

Nothing Would Spur the Real Estate Market More Than Payoff of Student Debt

A recurring idea among many of the Democratic presidential candidates is the payoff of student debt combined with making public universities and colleges tuition-free.

If that were to be done, I think we’d see an amazing increase in home purchases by those who are currently saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Freeing them from monthly payments of that debt could unleash a lot of buying power, and not just for real estate. Dollar-for-dollar, there is probably no investment the government could make of equal scope that would have as great a stimulating effect on the economy.

According to the Center for Responsible Lending, “Student loan debt has topped $1.5 trillion in recent years, making it the largest type of consumer debt outstanding other than mortgages. The average student loan borrower graduates with nearly $30,000 in debt.”

Moreover, according to the Center, The CFPB estimates that over a quarter of borrowers are delinquent or have defaulted on their student loan debt. Such defaults wreak havoc on the borrower’s credit rating, making home financing impossible rather than just difficult.

It’s hard to imagine the impact of having literally millions of home buyers entering the market if this were to happen. It may, in fact, prove to be too much stimulation of an already tight

housing market. Meanwhile, the rental market could have the depressing impact of so many renters vacating apartments and homes to buy their own condos and single-family homes.

Speaking of the economy, I read an article last week that the RV industry is experiencing a 20% decline in sales, and that it’s considered a leading indicator of recessions. In my Sept. 5th column I wrote about fears of recession stoking a major reduction in home buying activity, although market statistics don’t yet show that happening .

However, the article on RV sales got me thinking. What makes it a leading indicator of a coming recession is that RVs are an extreme example of discretionary spending, the kind that is reduced when consumers fear for their financial future.

Well, real estate purchases are often discretionary, too. People don’t always have to sell their current home or leave their rental to purchase a home. If they

are in fear of economic pain, it’s understandable that they would postpone such a purchase.

So, although the statistics don’t yet reflect such a slowdown in real estate activity, I think the prospect of that

slowdown is quite real, and I’ll be watching for statistical evidence of it.

Now, if we could get 10 or 20 million graduates relieved of their student debt, that could be a strong countervailing influence on the real estate market.

Some Takeaways from Last Saturday’s Electric Car Event This was the sixth year that Golden Real Estate has hosted a local “Drive Electric Week” event. As you’d expect, it has grown each year.

This year we got our first glimpse of EVs built to compete with Tesla’s highend electric cars. I got to drive the new Jaguar I-Pace and ride in Audi’s eTron, and they are certainly worthy competition for Tesla in the luxury EV field.

The Jaguar has four electric motors — one in each wheel hub — which is a step above Tesla’s two motors and is likely to become a favored design for high-end EVs. The difference in performance and handling is perceptible.

The Audi eTron has dual electric motors, like Tesla, centered between the front and rear wheels.

While these are worthy competitors to Tesla in the luxury market, and we can expect other such competitors, I don’t think Tesla has anything to worry about.

Tesla’s “ace-in-the-hole” is its Supercharger network, making interstate travel through the US & Canada easy. No other manufacturer can or will match it.

Celebrating 50 years of the Action Center Block party honors 50th anniversary

he Action Center reflected on 50 years of service to Jeffco residents and looked ahead to its next 50 years at its block party on Sept. 14. The party was held at the resource center’s headquarters, located at 8755 W. 14 Ave in honor of its 50th anniversary.

9/11 remembered at Colorado Memorial Stair Climb Thousands gathered on Sept. 11 for Red Rocks event

When the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York happened on Sept. 11, 2001, West Metro Fire firefighter Brad Harmon was sitting in a classroom for paramedics school. He was sent home from class, but his day was far from over.

Harmon served in the U.S. Air Force at the time, and he was sent to the Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, where he stayed the night.

“Life stops. I remember the surrealness of it,” Harmon said. “I remember how scary that night was.

Everybody thought the next attack was coming to that base that night.

We were on full alert.”

Harmon joined 2,500 others at Red Rocks the morning of Sept. 11 to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 people — including 343 New York City firefighters — who were killed in the World Trade Center attacks.

Harmon, other firefighters from multiple departments and area residents climbed the equivalent of the 110 stories of the WTC. Before the climb ensued, recordings from New York news stations from when the attacks occurred were

“I still see those buildings being hit by a plane. Can you imagine (the firefighters) going up into those buildings, and what it took,” said Durant Carpenter, of Centennial.

It was the 11th year the climb at Red Rocks took place. The event benefits the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the programs provided by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support the families

“It not only took so many lives, but it took a symbol of who we were in our way of life. You can’t forget that

sort of thing,” said Michelle Malin, executive director of the Honor Bell Foundation who brought the Honor Bell to Red Rocks. “If you forget, then we lose our reason to fight for the way of life we have.”

NREL gets its first autonomous shuttle Driverless vehicle to transport employees around the Golden campus

From wireless charging for electric vehicles to vehicles that run on hydrogen fuel, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden has been doing research on transportation for a long time.

“Pushing the boundaries of science,” said Johney Green, associate laboratory director in NREL’s mechanical and thermal engineering services, the latest in transportation research to come to NREL is an electric-powered autonomous shuttle.

“We want to be on the ground floor” with transportation technologies,” Green said. “This gives us an opportunity to take a peek into the future.”

Called the EZ10, the autonomous shuttle made its NREL debut on Sept. 9.

EZ10 coming to NREL was made possible by EasyMile, a company that specializes in “autonomous vehicle technology and smart mobility solutions,” according to its website.

Headquartered in France, EasyMile established a regional office in Denver two years ago. EasyMile first introduced its EZ10 at the 2019 Global Public Transport Summit on June 10

How it works is “real-time data processing allows the driverless vehicle system to decide how to behave as it progresses safely along the road,” states a press release.

At NREL, the EZ10 will be used to transport employees to and from the campus’ parking garage during peak hours. It can comfortably carry 12 passengers at a time, and can make about five trips of its 1.1-mile preprogrammed route per hour.

Though the autonomous shuttle is “equipped with a full range of sensors and an intelligent vehicle system to detect obstacles and avoid collisions,” states a press release, for EZ10’s first year of operation, MV Transportation will have a person onboard to monitor operations and to ensure safety.

“Everybody’s talking about ACES,” said Kevin Walkowicz, manager of NREL’s Advanced Vehicles and Fueling Infrastructure Group.

ACES, he added, stands for Automated, Connected, Electric and

Shared transportation. The EZ10 is for passenger transport, Walkowicz said, but there is also research going on in the world for autonomous freight transport and multimodal.

“It’s a really exciting time in transportation,” added Jeffrey Gonder, manager of NREL’s Mobility, Behavior and Advanced Powertrains Group.

Aside from eventually becoming operated completely on its own, the future for EZ10 at NREL will be for data collecting. This includes “associated energy use, charging and energy storage needs, and autonomous systems operation and control,” states a press release.

The NREL “campus is a living laboratory,” Green said. “We’re excited to be able to do this here.”

Jeffco Sheriff and partner organizations solve 38-year-old cold case 18-year-old Jeannie Moore was found dead in August 1981

Thanks to advancements in technology in genealogical DNA matching, the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office has solved a cold case that was nearly four decades old.

At a press conference on Sept. 10, Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader announced that Donald Steven Perea had kidnapped, sexually assaulted Perea and killed Jeannie Moore in August 1981.

Perea died on May 28, 2012, from health issues. He was 54.

“While her family is pleased the suspect has been identified, they’re still struggling with the memories and pain this discovery has brought back,” Shrader said. In a press release he added, “we would

have preferred to place handcuffs on the suspect (but) we hope knowing who and where he is brings them some degree of closure.”

On Aug. 25, 1981, at about 7 a.m., Moore, who was 18 at the time, was hitchhiking from her residence near West 48th Avenue and Depew Street in Lakeside to her place of employment near West 13th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood.

It was common for Moore to hitchhike to work, said Elias Alberti, a cold case investigator with the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office. On Aug. 25, 1981, she walked to a gas station near I-70 and Harlan Street, and in the vicinity of that area, witnesses saw her get into a red car, Alberti said.

About 30 minutes later when Moore did not show up for her shift that morning, Moore’s manager called her mother to find out why.

The mother expressed concern, and this kicked off the investigation into Moore’s whereabouts, Alberti said.

Five days later, picnickers found Moore’s body in Genesee Park, which is located in the Jefferson County foothills.

County Sheriff ’s Office got involved with the investigation, Alberti said.

“Over this many years, there’s been thousands and thousands of hours dedicated to Jeannie Moore’s case, as well as the other cold cases that we have,” Alberti said.

Perea was 23 when he kidnapped and murdered Moore.

He was out of jail on bond or awaiting court proceedings, Alberti said, for an arrest in Westminster on April 3, 1981, on a different case for which he was later convicted of rape

and assault with a deadly weapon. He was in prison from 1982 to 1985. He had minimal criminal history after he got out of prison — traffic offenses and misdemeanor assault cases, Alberti said.

“When we solve cases like these,” said Mitch Morrissey, owner of United Data Connect, “I really believe that it has an impact on our community.”

Three organizations can be credited for solving Moore’s case — the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office a for profit company called United Data Connect and Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, a local nonprofit organization.

In 2008, the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office re-examined the evidence in Moore’s case collected in 1981 with new technology specific to DNA, Alberti said. In 2011, the evidence was submitted to CBI and a DNA profile for the suspect was developed. It was uploaded into the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) but had “no successful hits,” Alberti said.

In May this year, the sheriff ’s office looked into the case again because of recent advancements in forensic genetic genealogy, Alberti said.

Once learning that the DNA evidence in Moore’s case could be reanalyzed, Alberti said, the sheriff ’s office reached out to United Data Connect for the analysis, and Denver Metro Crime Stoppers for funding assistance.

United Data Connect used the DNA profile of the unknown suspect to look for ancestry matches through public databases, and found potential family members of the unknown suspect.

This is what led investigators to determine that Perea was the suspect, but because he was deceased, they had to collect DNA from his biological daughter and perform a reverse paternity test.

Perea “was 3.3 trillion times more likely than anybody else to be the suspect, and now the perpetrator, in this case,” Shrader said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office is pleased this case has been solved, Shrader said.

He added that the department is committed to solving its other cold cases — 38 homicides, seven missing persons and two unidentified remains.

“Our commitment is bringing closure for all of those families,” Shrader said.

Parents appeal decision not to designate feeder for option school Request, if granted, could spur similar requests from Golden, Wheat Ridge schools

Neighboring schools Maple Grove Elementary for kindergarteners through fifth graders and the Manning School of Academics and Arts for sixth through eighth graders are at odds over a decision on school enrollment from Superintendent Jason Glass.

The schools, located in Golden, sit next door to one another on Alkire Street; however, Maple Grove does not feed directly into Manning, an option school.

With some believing the neighborhood elementary school should be a feeder for Manning, community members and Manning’s Parent Partnership Committee met back in 2018 to discuss the enrollment pattern, which is based on a lottery system.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, Glass made a decision to change the system, by extending priority to siblings not only of seventh and sixth graders at Manning, as in previous years, but also of outgoing eighth graders.

However, the change still did not prioritize acceptance of Maple Grove students, who will continue to have an equal chance of getting into Manning as other district students do.

Maple Grove parents came to the school board’s Sept. 5 meeting to request an appeal of Glass’s decision, as Maple Grove children “are disproportionately affected” by rejection from Manning as compared to other students, according to former Maple Grove principal Ian Stone.

The parents said that because the majority of Maple Grove students matriculate to Manning, students who are not accepted become separated from their peer group and face a greater emotional impact than other students do.

According to data from the Manning School, 88%, or just over 40 of Maple Grove’s fifth graders, applied to Manning for the 2019-2020 school year.

Kyffin, Prospect Valley and Ralston elementary schools saw similar numbers of Manning applicants. However, at each school less than 70% of fifth graders applied to Manning.

Parents also presented data from the “2019 Survey of 5th Grade Parents for Continuation.” According to the data, every Jeffco middle school will have five or fewer sixth graders from Maple Grove this year, as opposed to the 34 at Manning.

“We are only talking about a small

number of children,” said Danielle Piper, chairperson of Maple Grove’s school accountability committee.

The accommodation for Maple Grove students “will have very little impact on the enrollment process but a comparatively large impact” on Maple Grove students who would otherwise be rejected from Manning, she said.

She and her fellow parents pointed to other district examples of schools feeding into option schools, such as Dennison Elementary, which feeds into D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High.

But Glass and board members said that, though there may be some similarities between the two situations, no situation quite like this one exists in Jeffco.

“The difference is that those schools wanted that connection,” Glass said of D’Evelyn and Dennison.

But “in this case, we’re seeking an imposition to Manning, (which) does not wish to have that preference.”

Further, board member Amanda Stevens suggested that, if the board were to overturn the decision and make an accommodation for Maple Grove students, it would create “a situation in which we may overstep our role as a governing body.”

She suggested the district instead look into writing a district-wide policy to address this issue and any similar ones in the future.

The board has yet to decide whether

to hold a formal vote on overturning Glass’s decision. Should the board choose not to vote, Glass’s decision would not be overturned, but that does not “mean we have not heard” the parents, said board president Ron Mitchell.

Conversely, if board members decide it is necessary to vote on the decision, the vote would take place at the regular meeting on Oct. 10.

Meanwhile, Manning principal Jeena Templeton urged the board not to overturn Glass’s decision, as it reflects the input of the entire community, she said.

“We understand the desire to have (students) ride their bikes to school and matriculate from elementary school to middle school with their friends,” she said. But with an equal lottery, Manning “does not have to choose one family’s reason for choosing Manning as more important than another.”

She added that other nearby schools, such as Prospect Valley located less than two miles from Manning, have said they would attempt to make similar requests should Maple Grove’s be granted.

“It threatens our status as a true option,” she said. And should the board overturn the decision, “I believe it would be very difficult for the relationship between the Maple Grove community and the larger Manning community to heal.”

District talks tactics to engage ‘kids on the outer circle’ Survey finds more than 16% of middle, high school students feel unsafe

Since 2018-2019 data came back for the Jefferson County school district’s Make Your Voice Heard Survey — with 20.4% of middle schoolers and 16.3% of high schoolers saying they do not feel safe at school — district staff have aimed to continue bolstering school safety.

“The events occurring around this country are having an impact on how our kids and staff are feeling,” said John McDonald, executive director of Safety Security and Emergency Management. As a result, “it’s going to be a big lift to keep” even the percentages the district saw this year, he said.

At the Sept. 5 school board meeting, McDonald and his colleagues provided an update on school safety goals, which state the district not only seeks to maintain the above percentages, but increase them. By 2022, the district aims for at least 90% of all students to say they feel safe on the Make Your Voice Heard Survey.

Additionally, the district has set a goal for 95% of educators to feel their school is safe on the Teaching & Learning Conditions Colorado (TLCC) survey. For 2019, that number was 90.3%.

Safety strategies To meet its goals, the district has been using recommendations of the School Safety Task Force.

One notable recommendation has been the Middle School Campus Security Program, McDonald said.

Through the program, both Carmody and Creighton middle schools

have received additional campus supervisors to engage with students on a regular basis.

The district would like to implement the program in every Jeffco middle school within the next two years, said Jeff Pierson, director of Safe School Environments.

The team highlighted several other successes during its presentation, including improved preparation of administrators. This year, safety specialists provided the district’s yearly safety information to groups of about 30 administrators at a time, instead of the bigger groups of previous years, to make safety presentations more engagement-based as opposed to lecture-based.

“The feedback we got was great,” Pierson said, with administrators saying they felt “better prepared with the right information.”

McDonald and Pierson also highlighted the district’s School Nurse Response Team, through which 33 school nurses have learned safety tactics from first responders — a program which McDonald says has attracted national recognition as other districts call to do the same.

CALLS FOR HELP Colorado’s Safe2Tell tip line, encourages students to anonymously text or call in to report “anything that concerns or threatens you, your friends, your family or your community.”

Statewide, Safe2Tell saw a 75% increase in tips this August, when compared to August 2018, according to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

Tips to Safe2Tell can be given by calling 1-877-542-7233 (SAFE), going to the website Safetotell.org, or by downloading the SafeToTell Colorado app for Apple or Google devices. school safety, and it’s showed in the year’s Safe2Tell data. Safe2Tell is a website and tip line through which students can anonymously report safety concerns, which are then addressed by both the school and law enforcement.

There were 2,396 Safe2Tell reports in Jeffco last year, as opposed to five years ago, when there were less than 800 reports, McDonald said.

For 2018-2019, the most common type of Safe2Tell submission were student reports that they or a classmate was at risk for suicide, with 388 reports in the suicide threat category.

While personnel believe these increases partially stem from new programming, the gains also reflect statewide trends. August 2019 marked a new record for total Safe2Tell reports, with 1,503 tips coming in statewide, which is a 75% increase from August 2018, according to the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.

“These growth statistics are a testament to the effectiveness of statewide training and awareness efforts as well as the support Safe2Tell receives from our school, law enforcement, and mental health partners,” said Safe2Tell program director Essi Ellis.

But even amidst a celebration that students are relying more on school officials and law enforcement, board member Susan Harmon called on the district to address the “upsetting” number of suicide threats in the district.

The team said that a more indepth presentation on the socialemotional health of students, and tactics to improve school cultures, will occur at a future meeting.

In the meantime, Pierson said he and his colleagues have been meeting with student groups to hear more about what would make them feel safe at school.

Additionally, they have met individually with school principals to strategize on engaging students who feel they do not belong in the school, he said.

“The number one (contributor to students’ safety) is having a trusting, caring adult in those schools,” Pierson said. “We’ve pushed (principals) to rethink how you teach teachers to engage. Rethink how you engage kids on the outer circle.”

There seem to be a lot of “I’s” in these teams

I write this as I’m watching the first of five football games I’ll take in during the next 36 ALCHEMY hours or so, now that Monday Night Football is a double header. The Broncos, of course, are the pivotal game for me, but, overall, I just can’t seem to get enough football.

What I have had my Andrea Doray fill of, already, is the “adore me” attitude of some – too many – players.

You’ve seen it – a player makes a

tackle or a catch or a sack or a first down, he celebrates with a fist pump or something similar, and the crowd cheers for his accomplishment. After all, that’s his job and the stadium, his office (albeit a loud and raucous one).

But sometimes somehow this just isn’t enough. The player holds his arms up in the air and waggles his hands and fingers: “C’mon, more, more, more for me!”

Yawn.

Imagine such big-headed behavior – from an adult – at your place of work, your kid’s school, your dentist’s office, or, perhaps most importantly, in your own kitchen as your emergency afterhours plumber stops the spraying leak under your sink.

Any of these settings – especially your kitchen – are great places for

celebrating a job well done. But I hope the image of any of these job-doers leaping around, taking a sweeping bow, throwing up his or her hands and begging for additional adulation is as hilarious to you as it is to me.

Before you say it, yes, I know … this is football, and most fans willingly comply with such requests for fullthroated awe. Some people I know find even these self-aggrandizing performances amusing and regard them as entertainment – in an industry that makes its money from fans’ investment in the entertainers.

Football is a physical sport and outsized egos are part of the game. Last I heard, though, football is also a team sport. Play together, win together, celebrate together … with the operative

word being “together.”

Oh, I’m not talking about spiking the ball after a touchdown, serving up the Mile High Salute (which was once deemed as “excessive celebration” by the often-unfathomable NFL) or the elaborate meme-worthy dances in the end zone.

Yet I do long for the poise of Eddie McCaffery who simply dropped the ball to the turf after he scored, and I appreciate the focus of Phillip Lindsay who – rather than spending time applauding his own achievements – bounces back up for the next play with his team.

By the way, have you ever noticed a field goal kicker egg the crowd on? No, me either.

Getting together on trash My husband and I have lived on Simms Street for 42 years. We have seen it deteriorate for the past 10 for sure. We have trash trucks on our street five days a week, sometimes more than one hauler per day. We don’t have the benefit of an HOA so it is constantly in a state of trash cans out or tipped over due to wildlife.

I have talked to many neighbors and we would love to have one truck one day a week. Also, to have recycling as an option would be great. I believe the proposal is also to have the trash company have a large item pick up a few times a year like they do in Denver.

business, but the city could be divided into sections and have just one company work that section. If you have an HOA trash that you are happy with, keep it. But if the city could negotiate a better deal, I don’t see why they might want to change.

Can we all work together for a better Arvada? I know our street need help for sure.

Have you ever thought about some of the simple things that make life immeasurably easier and better? Like HITTING the sticky note — before those came HOME along, what did people do to leave positive messages to themselves or their family on the mirror in the morning? Write in lipstick? Savages.

And, for the insight of putting tiny pieces Michael Alcorn of paper together with bits of re-usable glue, surely the inventor of the sticky note is in retirement on a beach front somewhere, putting notes in bottles and tossing them into the sea with howls of ironic laughter. A well-earned retreat into oblivion.

Well, dangit, somebody else beat me to another of these simple inventions. Actually, it’s not simple, and isn’t an every day sort of innovation, but it’s insightful, and it’s bril-

liant, and I’m sure the person who thought of it is sitting on a beach somewhere, counting their residuals, and laughing at their ability to take advantage of peoples’ addictions.

That’s right. I am talking about Top Golf, of course.

What madman would invent a place where people will go, with their friends and family, and pay to hit a golf ball around? And, even more brilliant, there’s no putting involved. No scoring involved. No five-hour commitments in the heat and sun. No walking and searching and knowing the arcane rules of a game that — not coincidentally — was invented in the same century as Scotch whiskey.

Golf is supposed to be miserable … and I absolutely love the game.

It’s supposed to be frustrating and confusing — golf is a test of character. And then, right when every golfer is ready to toss their clubs in the lake so they can be reunited with the golf balls you just put in there, it gives you one, glorious, awesome shot. So that you come back next week.

I’m just over it, the persistent “me, me, me first, and all me” arrogance of some players (Antonio Brown, anyone?). I am aware that the nature of the game today does favor the super-talented, the larger-than-life stars whose celebrity can define, if not dominate, the team’s personality … which is not always a bad thing. Patrick Mahomes comes to mind.

I suppose, however, that when even Mahomes begs for such attention, I might have to give up my objection to these exhibitions. Until then, perhaps, football players, you could do your best, and celebrate with your team when you add your individual accomplishments.

After all, that’s your job.

handling of the property on the corner of 60th and Pierce.This once beautiful property is more than an eyesore, it not only looks like a dump but people are now treating it as a dump.It truly is astonishing that the city has allowed this to happen. I spoke with my city council representative, the planning office, and code enforcers over the last two years. In March, my city councilor said he thought it would be cleaned up this spring.

In June, the planning department told me that the property would be cleaned up by August. It is now September. I contacted my city councilor again and he told me that the “wheels of justice move slowly.” This obviously is not a priority for them, but it is for the residents of this part of Arvada.

As I mentioned, people have now

started dumping their trash on the property, including mattresses.It may look like a dump, but is not a dump. I know the former property owner is responsible for the initial destruction of this land, but why can’t the city do something. Why do we have code enforcement? At the very least, the city needs to have the property owner trim the 5-foot tall weeds.

Do you really want to take your life in your hands by mixing your cycle with automobiles? Our son witnessed a cyclists’ death here in Arvada, because the cyclist violated the rules of the road. Cycling is a great sport, but is it wise to mix with heavy traffic, whatever your reason?

This dilemma has arisen due to a larger problem. We have not

yet addressed mass transit in a meaningful way. State funds that were supposed to be directed toward this problem have been wasted, or worse, not spent on the problem. I don’t believe there is even one route that is profitable for our transit system, and this true all over the country. Getting to the bus or train is not always easy. Then when you arrive, you may not be close to your destination. We have created a transit system that is not user friendly and which gives little incentive to use the system rather than drive, or perhaps take your bicycle. I have visited other cities, such as Washington, DC, that have a usable transportation system. It is unforgivable that our metro area is not even close to a solution. Even back in the 1950’s Walter Winchell (you need to be my age to remember him), made public notice that Denver was not solving its problems.

Mary Carolyn Lawson, age 85, passed away August 16, 2019. She was born June 27, 1934 in Denver, Colorado to Wes and Mary Hamilton and joyfully married her true love, Richard Lee Lawson, in October of 1952 who has since preceded her in death in 1987.

Mary graduated from Lakewood High School in 1952. She was a devoted wife and mother and was deeply loved by her family. She especially enjoyed her role as Grandma/Poppy/Pa. Mary was witty and had a contagious sense of humor. She was humble and kind, always making people around her feel appreciated and valued. She loved to travel, bake pumpkin bread, crochet, read and hike. She loved sharing “HIS PLACE” mountain house in Dillon with friends and family so they could enjoy the beauty of Colorado. Her generosity was abundant.

Mary loved God and serving. She was a missionary in China, volunteered with Samaritans Purse; cleaning up after Katrina and feeding the homeless in Denver. Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 - “And be

kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”

Mary will be greatly missed by her four children and their spouses, Sherri and Lennie Moore, Carol and Wayne Dennis, Steve and Chrisann Lawson and Maryann and Eric Peratt; grandchildren, Heather (Bret), Carrie (Steve), Beth (Bryan), Jared (Taniel), Brandon (Charissa), Kaylor (Marie), Tanner, Cade, Ambria; plus 11 great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her brother, Bill (Bonnie) Hamilton and sister, Jeanne (Bob) Henderson. Her granddaughter, Bridgett Lawson and grandson, Brad Moore, proceeded her in death. All of whom she loved and touched deeply.

We will all cherish every moment we were able to spend with her.

NORMAN JAMES NEUHALFEN, 86, Keenesburg, Colorado After battling Dementia/Alzheimer’s, Norman passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2019 in Fort Lupton, Colorado.

Norman was born July 12, 1933 in Coleridge, Nebraska. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanette Neuhalfen of Keenesburg, CO and his eight children Larie Bratcher (Terry) of Las Vegas, NV; Michelle Greenwald (Greg) of Westminster, CO; Teri Spinuzzi (Bill) of Broomfield, CO; Doug Neuhalfen of Arvada, CO; Jon Neuhalfen of Johnstown, CO; Dennis Neuhalfen (Kris) of Loveland, CO; Mike Neuhalfen of Limon, CO; and Jeff Neuhalfen (Ronnie) of Denver, CO. He is also survived by his brothers Carroll (Shirley) Neuhalfen of Hartington, NE and Gary Neuhalfen of Coleridge, NE, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death, very recently, by his eldest son Kevin. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Duane and 3 brothers and 2 sisters who died in infancy, two nephews (Dwayne and Kyle), a granddaughter (Donia) and a great grandson (Benjamin) along with many other relatives. What a beautiful thought of their reunion in heaven!!

Norman grew up in the country in Coleridge, Nebraska.

He joined the Army in 1953 and served in the Korean War. With a dream of flying a plane, he talked about training as a pilot even though he was a bank officer. He helped the director of a flight school with a loan to buy her first plane so she could open the school and in turn she taught him to fly.

In his free time on the weekends it was always flea markets, garage sales and farm sales looking for collectibles, oddities, antique cars and machinery. Over the years, he also owned car lots and a small restaurant, The Dog House, in West Arvada.

Norman’s life was celebrated on Friday, September 6, 2019 in conjunction with the Memorial Mass at St. Joseph Parish in Golden which was already planned for his recently deceased son Kevin. A very touching procession of vehicles moved from the Church to Fort Logan National Cemetery where military honors took place at the burial ceremony. He is now laid to rest with his son Kevin.

Archtop guitars bring beauty, music to festival

That’s a lot of people to fit in a relatively confined area, McEldowney said.

Total, the county manages 90 miles of open space trails and another 63 miles in Douglas County parks. That’s not counting municipalities, state parks or federal forest land in the area.

In the north metro, Westminster offers 150 miles of trail surface, most of which is multimodal, Reichgelt said.

People can walk, run, bike or ride

or many people, there are just two kinds of guitars — acoustic and electric. But those in search of some of the clearest notes the instrument is capable of know there’s another kind — the archtop.

The go-to choice for jazz and rockabilly guitarists, archtops are among the most difficult to build.

Unlike the most common acoustic and electric guitars that have flat tops where the strings are, archtops are curved outward. The end result is as often a piece of sculpture as a COMING functional ATTRACTIONS fully instrument. And that’s something luthier Greg German knows all about.

“I used to do medical illustrations, which is an art and a science, and guitar making appeals to art Clarke Reader and science as well,” German said. “There’s an attention to detail in both, and while artistic expression is important, you can’t let it wreck the show. In the end, the product has a job to do.”

Musicians, guitar fans and art aficionados will all find something to wow them at the 2019 Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival, held at various locations in Olde Town Arvada from Friday, Sept.

20 through Sunday, Sept. 22. Locations are Silver Vines Winery, 7509 Grandview Ave., No. 2511, La Dolce Vita coffee shop, 5756 Olde Wadsworth Blvd., the Hilton Garden Inn, 5455 Olde Wadsworth Blvd., and the Olde Town Pickin Parlour, 7515 Grandview Ave. As part of the festival, luthiers (custom guitar makers) like German and others will be performing and demonstrating their craft.

There will be performances held throughout the weekend and workshops and presentations on a variety of topics, including the past, present and future of archtop guitar building, melodic guitar playing and more.

“These kinds of shows get loads of professional musicians and amazing instruments in same the room,” German said. “I get to talk to people about design and see them play my instruments. It’s great to watch someone else enjoy the instrument I made and make it talk.”

hen a bicyclist encounters a horseback rider on the trail, do they know what to do? When hikers walk their dogs through local open spaces, do they know the dos and don’ts of taking pets along for the adventure?

Denver metro area open space officials and volunteers who spoke to Colorado Community Media said the majority of people are considerate and follow trails rules. But they’ve also seen an influx of people hitting the trails as the Front Range’s population booms. That heightens the need for trail etiquette education, they said.

“You’ve got experienced people who don’t think twice about (etiquette) and your inexperienced people who just aren’t used to it yet,” said Open Space Specialist Hans Reichgelt with the City of Westminster.

In general, trail etiquette stipulates that cyclists yield to hikers and horseback riders, while hikers yield to horses. Yielding means moving off the trail until a user with the right-of-way has passed.

People should also stay to the right and keep pets on the right as well.

Part of trail etiquette means staying to the right and allowing oncoming trail users space to pass, not taking up the width of the trail like these pedestrians at Bingham Lake Park in The Pinery, near Parker.

Douglas County recently produced informational materials concerning trail etiquette in light of the county’s population growth and increase in trail use, said Assistant Director of Open Space Scott McEldowney.

“We anticipate roughly 600,000 users on open space this year,” McEldowney said. “I believe this year we will be about 5% over last year. The previous few years, we have seen a 15% to 20% increase.”

horses. In 2017, Westminster saw just shy of 550,000 trail users and nearly 554,000 in 2018.

Reichgelt said the city expects to surpass last year’s count “very soon for 2019.” He cautioned the city does not have counters on all trails, so the true numbers could be higher.

Open space officials aren’t the only ones advocating for responsible trail use and etiquette.

Throughout Jefferson County, the nonprofit Golden Giddyup Trail Team partners with Jefferson County Open Space to maintain trails. The organization began in 2013 after floods devastated the local trail system.

This summer, members surpassed 10,000 hours of volunteer work. Those hours have included pop-up events where they encourage people to follow open space rules and regulations.

“Working with open space and staff, we’ve specifically targeted mountain bikers at some of the most heavily used parks,” said Executive Director Jeff Watrobka.

The group is mostly comprised of mountain bikers. Watrobka himself averages 40 to 50 miles a week. He believes an important part of trail etiquette is understanding a trail’s dif-

and guitars since he was a child and built electric guitar amplifiers when he was younger. From there, it wasn’t a far leap to building guitars. He apprenticed at the Olde Town Pickin Parlour and worked there until 2008, before going off to do work out of his own shop.

“I’ve been to shows where some people in crowd have no experience at all with the musical instrument, instead they see the guitars as sculptures,” German said. “Every guitar you see are going to be one-of-a-kind objects that are tools to make music but are also art objects. It could be an eye-opening experience.”

Then, he said, check the weather. It’s important for trail users to pay attention to recent weather events. Different trails are comprised of different soil types, he said.

Some lend themselves well to biking or horseback riding when wet, but others do not. Those with heavy clay content can be damaged if used too soon after rain or snow, he said.

If he could grade Douglas County trail users, McEldowney said he’d give them a B-plus. There’s a low frequency

of accidents, which can partially be attributed to how the system was planned, he said, but also to educated users.

When it comes to areas of improvement, Reichgelt, McEldowney and Watrobka all urged trails user to remain aware of their surroundings.

Ditch the headphones. Be on the lookout for wildlife, and other trail users. Lastly, leash the family dog, and keep it close.

When people make complaints, it’s frequently about unleashed dogs,

McEldowney said. Similarly, Reichgelt said allowing dogs to extend their leash across the trail is a common mistake people make.

“That’s just a clothesline for anyone coming through on a bike,” he said.

Mostly, the men encouraged people to follow the golden rule and take care of the trail as though it were their home.

“Just be nice,” Reichgelt said.

“Everyone is trying to do the same thing — just get out there and enjoy the outdoors.”

And here’s how I know: that video spawned a 45-minute conversation in our living room about good and evil, religion, geopolitics, World War II, America’s place in the world, and asymmetrical warfare, even reaching back to the American Revolution. It was a GREAT conversation! And if anything stuck with my

son, I certainly hope it was that the world is complicated, that nothing happens in a vacuum, and that events from 50 years ago do still have an effect on our lives today.

Quality of Life Plus joins River Deep Alliance Groups combine strengths to provide more efficient, effective programming STAFF REPORT

The River Deep Foundation has joined forces with Quality of Life Plus, an organization that challenges university students to create novel solutions to improve the lives of injured veterans, first responders, and service members by designing and developing adaptive equipment.

In 2018, River Deep Foundation launched an initiative, made possible

by QL+, with engineering students from Colorado School of Mines. The students were challenged to design user-controlled adaptive equipment providing individuals with disabilities the chance to participate in archery, fishing and recreational shooting.

This collaboration has allowed the students to work closely with these individuals at River Deep outings, developing real-world solutions to their needs. As the project evolved and the value of this relationship became clear, River Deep Foundation invited QL+ to join the River Deep Foundation Alliance, a collaboration of aligned nonprofit organizations that share resources, knowledge and ideas with the goal of providing more

The alliance now includes eight agencies working to eliminate redundancy, combine strengths, streamline services and significantly fortify the safety net. River Deep Alliance members are Anglers of Honor, Craig Hospital, Operation TBI Freedom, Safari Club International—Denver Humanitarian Outreach Program (SCI HOP), Task Force: ISO, Victory Service Dogs, Quality of Life Plus and

River Deep Foundation.

As the newest alliance member, QL+ will be able to reach more individuals who can benefit from the innovations made by engineering students.

River Deep Foundation, based in Denver, provides opportunities for recreational outings and activities to veterans and other individuals who have suffered a life-changing catastrophic spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder or other physical, psychological or

emotional trauma. The goal is to help them heal and re-acclimate and reengage in life.

These activities include fishing, archery, hunting, camping, ballooning, photography, fencing, horseback riding, cooking, art and other collaborative therapeutic recreational outings. Each outing also provides participants and their families with the opportunity to relax and enjoy the outdoors, network and engage with others, experience camaraderie and learn about other resources in a supportive environment.

River Deep Foundation is planning a golf tournament fundraiser on Monday, Oct. 7 at Meridian Golf Club.

Money raised will help fund planning and logistics for the recreational outings. Meridian is a private club featuring a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. 500+ people seek to clean up trash in Clear Creek Canyon Jeffco Open Space hosts large volunteer event in celebration of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 28

Allan Reid, who has lived in Jefferson County for about 50 years, identifies with the saying that goes like this: If not me, who? And if not now, when?

“I’m retired,” said the 74-year-old volunteer with Jefferson County Open Space. “But National Public Lands Day is an opportunity for everybody to give back.”

Jefferson County Open Space will be hosting a large-scale volunteer cleanup opportunity on Sept. 28 in Clear Creek Canyon Park in celebration of National Public Lands Day. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be closing U.S. 6, the road that runs through Clear Creek Canyon, so that more than 500 volunteers can participate in stream bank and roadside trash collection, habitat restoration and erosion control through a 13-mile section of the canyon.

“We think that Clear Creek Canyon Park offers a unique challenge for the county,” Matt Robbins, Open Space’s community connections manager, said in a press release. “As we continue to make improvements to the Peaks to Plains Trail, it has become apparent that it needs some love.”

Reid has been volunteering with Open Space since 2014 and currently volunteers as a park patrol and on trail building and maintenance about twice a week. This is in addition to all the time he spends recreating — hiking, mostly — and enjoying the trails, he said.

“People have to recreate and get away from the city. It’s critical to have that environment,” Reid said. But “the trails and parks don’t magically maintain themselves. Weekend projects are ideal for people who work fulltime.”

According to CDOT, about 10,000 vehicles travel though Clear Creek Canyon daily, Robbins said. So lots of debris and trash ends up making its way into the river, and eventually into Golden and beyond, Robbins said.

He added that a lot of people will likely be surprised how much trash is collected during the few hours of cleanup on National Public Lands Day. But, Robbins said, “everyone will benefit.”

“We only have a finite amount of (open space) land,” Williams said. “We need to take care of what we have.”

The main part of the event is a volunteer cleanup effort in Clear Creek Canyon Park, which is located off U.S. 6, west of Golden. This part will start in the morning and last about three or four hours. Families are welcome, and there will be work appropriate available for children as young as age 6.

Following the volunteer cleanup of the canyon, everybody is invited to reconvene at about noon to 2 p.m. for a celebration on the lawn of the Jeffco human services building, 900 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden.

The celebration is free to attend and will include food and drink, including beer for volunteers who are age 21+; live music; and an expo featuring local businesses and nonprofits, and education booths.

Registration for the cleanup effort in Clear Creek Canyon Park is open now.

It is recommended to register early, as there is a cap of 550 volunteers. To register, visit offero.jeffco.us.

ARVADA — Three-sport athlete Caleb Rillos knows how to turn a negative into the positive.

Rillos suffered a broken wrist during basketball season last winter. Besides missing the remainder of the hoops season, Rillos was out the entire spring lacrosse season.

“During the off-season I worked on getting my basketball shot better with my right hand, dribbling with my right hand and catching footballs one-handed,” Rillos said after catching two third-quarter touchdowns in Ralston Valley’s

Ralston Valley — No. 5 in the latest CHSAANow.com Class 5A football rankings — is definitely in a good situation with an impressive 3-0 start to the season.

The Mustangs have outscored their three opponents — Mountain Vista, Fairview and Poudre — by a score of 132-40.

“We did really good, but we definitely have to fix somethings for sure,” Ralston Valley senior linebacker Braden Siders said.

“There is always room for improvement.”

The Mustangs got to a 40-0 lead to induce a running clock midway through the third quarter after back-to-back touchdown catches by Rillos. Senior quarterback Walker Brickle tossed three touchdowns.

Seniors Ben Takata and Kaleb Tischler each had a touchdown catch to add to Rillos’s pair of touchdowns.

The last touchdown catch by Rillos came from sophomore back-up quarterback Zach Friedman. Junior Tyler Roybal had a 5-yard touchdown run.

Ralston Valley’s defense also got involved with the scoring.

Valor defeats Pomona in top-10 5A football battle

ARVADA — Big football games call for big plays … and Valor running back Gavin Sawchuk delivered Friday, Sept. 13, at the North Area Athletic Complex.

In a marquee early-season match-up between Class 5A powerhouses Valor Christian and Pomona, Sawchuk scored on a 21-yard screen pass and 64yard touchdown run in the first half.

The No. 3-ranked Eagles took a twoscore lead before halftime and held on for a 17-13 victory over No. 8 Pomona.

“Those were huge plays and sometimes that is the difference in a game,” Valor coach Ed McCaffrey said. “One team makes one more big play and I think that is what happened tonight.”

Valor (2-1) answered with a 53-yard scoring drive. Sawchuk bowled over a Pomona defender as he barreled into

the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.

The sophomore’s long touchdown run opened up the second quarter to give the Eagles their first lead at 14-7.

“The line were able to make blocks

and open the hole,” Sawchuk said of his 64-yard touchdown run. “The fullback led and took out the linebacker.

It was wide-open. All I had to do was run.”

Valor senior Brian Borgan kicked a 37-yard field goal to cap the scoring in the first half and give Valor a twoscore lead at 17-7 at the break.

Sawchuk finished with 29 carries for 174 yards on the night. Senior quarterback Cole Bott was 9-for-15 passing for 142 yards.

Bott helped seal the victory after Pomona cut the lead to 17-13 with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter. Junior Jack Pospisil grabbed an 8-yard catch from Ritzmann for the lone score in the second half.

However, Bott converted on a pair of third-down plays late to allow Valor to keep the ball away from the Panthers in the final minutes and run out the clock.

“I think the defense has gotten better each week,” Ralston Valley coach Matt Loyd said. “We played hard Week 1, but had too many mistakes. We’ve eliminated those mistakes, but we need to keep getting better.”

With Brickle — second-year starting quarterback — back behind center, along with the running back tandem of Roybal and Chase Wilson returning, the Mustangs have plenty of experience at their skilled positions.

“We have a lot of threats,” Rillos said of the offense. “There are a lot of threats to guard.”

Rillos had monster games receiving in the first two weeks. The senior had 13 catches for 231 yards and three touchdowns coming into Friday’s game.

“I came back with so much more fight in me,” Rillos said. “It’s so hard to sit out when you are hurt and can’t do anything. I was ready to come back and get after it.”

The Mustangs are back at NAAC on Thursday, Sept. 19. Ralston Valley squares off against Loveland. The Indians — No. 7 in the 4A rankings — defeated the Mustangs up north last season.

“We are trying to play every game as hard as we can,” Siders said. “We try not to worry as much about the competition as much as playing as hard as we can.”
