Parkway plans at standstill until end of 2019 Broomfield says it will postpone decision scheduled for September

An update on the City and County of Broomfield’s website on Sept. 1 indicated that the construction of the Jefferson Parkway — which earlier this year seemed to be on the horizon — is farther away than anticipated.

The post went up days after the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) alerted the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to its findings that some soil in the parkway’s planned route tested for elevated levels of plutonium.

“Given the recent test results and the (Broomfield) Council’s feedback, the Parkway is not moving forward at this time,” the statement reads.

The finding was part of a soil study the JPPHA launched in May, which was driven by several factors, including community member concerns about the road’s proposed path near the former Rocky Flats site. Community groups Rocky Flats Right to Know, the Rocky Flats Downwinders and others have worried that the toll road’s construction will stir up

plutonium buried near the site, putting nearby citizens at higher risk of developing cancer.

Because of these health concerns, Broomfield City Council members planned to hold a discussion and vote on whether to continue the city’s membership in the JPPHA and fund roughly $2 million extra requested for the project this year. Broomfield is one of three JPPHA members, along with the City of Arvada and Jefferson County.

Broomfield had tentatively scheduled its decision for September. However, plans changed after the discovery of a potential plutonium hotspot along Indiana Street.

“The soil sample was no surprise to me. Plutonium doesn’t go away,” said Bonnie Graham-Reed with Rocky Flats Right to Know. Areas surrounding Rocky Flats, like Indiana Street, were “never `cleaned up’ - there was no cleanup, except at the actual plant site.”

In its update, Broomfield said the discussion will not occur this month as the city awaits more information about plutonium levels in the area.

“There are no on-going activities to further the selection of a private partner for the Jefferson Parkway,” the statement said, which goes on to say that the city has no scheduled ordinances nor resolutions regarding the parkway, aside from possible financial support for more testing.

Looming city election The delay represents just one link in a chain reaction of setbacks: though the JPPHA had aimed to select a private partner to run the road this summer, the authority has waited on Broomfield’s decision; and though Broomfield had wanted to make its decision in September, the council has postponed discussion until the JPPHA’s soil sampling test is complete.

Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens holds the decision “was directly related to wanting to get better data” on the soil samples, disputing the claim that the delay had anything to do with the upcoming election.

But some opponents, such as Jeff Staniszewski and those in his group, the Movement to Stop Jefferson Parkway, question the timing of the Broomfield delay.

“We believe the Broomfield City Council would have voted down the appropriation (of the additional $2 million),” he said. “The mayor has pulled the proposal for the time being knowing the November elections might result in a Jefferson-Parkwayfriendly city council.”

Mayor Ahrens disputes such a motivation.

“I’ve heard that a few times and find the claim nonsensical,” Ahrens said.

“Now that we have experienced an anomaly, we are looking for guidance from the CDHPE after the test results

are presented.”

As for when that might be, the analysis of every sample — there are more than 200 — “will not be completed until late this year,” said Bill Ray, the executive director of the JPPHA. “The lab can only process 40 samples at a time and the analysis takes at least three weeks.”

In a public statement, Ray said that, even with recent events, “the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority Board of Directors has taken no action to change its approach to next steps with the Parkway. After the Board has the results of all samples and received appropriate direction from CDPHE, it will determine next steps for the highway and its process of selecting a contractor.”

Brett Vernon, founder of community group Neighbors of the Parkway, said that many may find the situation and plutonium discovery troubling, himself and his fellow group members included.

However, to him, time will ultimately tell whether the plans are safe or not, he said.

“The JPPHA has stated that the health of the community is paramount, and so far their actions are fully supportive of that statement,” he said. “Utilization of independent experts will be important to (ensure) that environmental concerns related to Rocky Flats are understood.”

Teacher contract, test results prompt budget changes Extra $9.5 million will fund salaries, planning for standardized tests

5, at which board members pressed for answers on how the district would improve for 2020.

in the CMAS, PSAT and SAT were slightly higher than state averages, overall student improvement from 2018 to 2019 fell short as compared to previous years, said Chief Academic Officer Matt Flores. The district does not take the figures lightly, as boosting improvement rates has always been a major goal, he said.

That priority was reflected when district representatives brought a budget update to the board. Though the board already adopted the 2019-2020 budget in June, district executives have recommended the board approve several changes to that budget that would increase the budget by about $9.5 million.

Additionally, the new budget recommends reallocating $3.5 million back to unassigned reserves and utilizing new funding from retirement turnover in its place.

Planning time One change came with an estimated $500,000 price tag and would implement a district-wide increase in teacher planning time, which district leaders expect will have a positive impact on test results. With the change, schools would build at least 45 minutes of collaborative planning time into the student contact day for every teacher.

Currently, some teachers already have 45 minutes or more, while some have less. The policy would standardize the minimum across the board.

Teachers need more planning time to better understand how to “transform the task,” or offer alternative forms of learning and testing, Flores said.

While the majority of Jeffco teachers believe the strategy will help students improve, according to data collected by the district, many feel unequipped to effectively employ the new methods, Director of Assessment and Research Heather MacGillivary said.

What Is a ‘Variable Commission’ and Why Is It Important to Sellers?

This week’s column is intended to help those who might benefit from a better understanding of how real estate brokers are paid. If you’re already well versed in this, please bear with me while I share some information with those who aren’t.

Before I explain what a variable commission is, let me explain who pays — and who receives— what in the typical real estate transaction.

Typically, the seller pays the full commission to the listing agent, who then pays the agent representing the buyer their portion. How commissions are paid and shared is one of the primary functions of the Multi-List Service, or “MLS” — to provide a system of “cooperation and compensation.” If you’re a member of an MLS (a must if you want to do more than just word-of-mouth real estate), you commit to putting all your listings on it so that other MLS members can show and sell them. MLS listings disclose what the listing agent will pay other MLS members if they procure a buyer.

Real estate firms may not dictate, share or discuss the commission rates that their agents charge (the average is about 5.5% according to published surveys).

That would be considered price fixing, a federal offense under the Sherman AntiTrust Act of 1890. Brokerages may, however, dictate the amount each agent offers to other agents who sell their listings. At Golden Real Estate, we, like most brokerages, require that our broker associates

offer a minimum 2.8% “co-op” commission, as it is known. To offer less could potentially discourage MLS members from showing our listings.

There’s some history behind that 2.8% co-op commission. Before the Justice Department forbade the real estate industry from engaging in the fixing of real estate commission, the Denver Board of Realtors fixed the rate at 7% and dictated that the co-op commission should be 40% of that, which is 2.8%. Listing commissions began falling due to competition once Realtors could no longer tell sellers there was a “standard” commission, but the coop commission remained at 2.8% for the reason I explained above. As a result, it’s common nowadays for listing agents to receive less than buyers’ agents, even though they absorb all the listing expenses — signs, advertising, photographs, video tours, showing service, staging consultations, etc.

Perhaps you’ve seen advertisements offering to list homes for 1% commission. However, such ads conceal (except in fine print) the fact that sellers will also need to pay an additional 2.8% to compensate the buyer’s agent. Because, as noted above, the listing commission includes what the listing agent will pay the buyer’s agent, advertising a 1% commission is clearly intended to deceive the home-selling public.

With that in mind, I will explain what a “variable commission” is and why it

A variable commission is one which is reduced when the listing agent does not have to share his commission with a buyer’s agent — in other words, when an unrepresented buyer is part of the transaction. Naturally, listing agents relish the opportunity to “double-end” a listing, as doing so significantly increases their own commission on the sale.

If a listing agent sells his own listing, he certainly deserves to earn additional commission, but should he keep the entire commission?

It is my practice to reduce the listing commission by 1% when no commission is owed to a buyer’s agent. In a typical scenario, where I list a home for 5.6% and offer 2.8% to the buyer’s agent, the result is that I earn 4.6% when I sell the home myself. I earn more, yet my seller pays less. I consider that a win/win.

MLS rules requires each listing to disclose whether there is a variable commission in effect, but it is only visible to MLS members, not to the general public. Knowing there’s a variable commission is important in the event an MLS member’s buyer will be competing with an unrepresented buyer.

Especially with new listings, a buyer’s agent will ask the listing agent if there are other offers in hand. If the MLS indicates that there is a variable commission, the buyer’s agent will want to know whether any of the offers are from unrepresented buyers and, if so, the amount of the variable commission. Thus, if the differential (as with my listings) is 1%, then the buyer’s agent knows that his client’s offer will have to be 1% higher than the unrepresented buyer’s offer in order to be of equal monetary value to the seller.

The listing agent can advise an unrepresented buyer that the variable commission makes their offer worth more if it is

the listing agent who writes the contract, versus hiring a buyer’s agent to represent them. At Golden Real Estate, some buyers are also incentivized to remain unrepresented because we offer free use of our moving vans (within the metro area), free moving labor, gas and packing materials if they choose to remain unrepresented.

As a matter of principle, I believe that a variable commission should be part of every listing agreement. However, in a data search of 811 Jefferson County sold listings on the MLS, I found that less than 20% of them have “Yes” entered in the Variable Commission field. In other words, more than 80% of sellers signed a listing agreement that allows their agent to keep 100% of their commission if they double-end the sale.

Overall, about 7% of all real estate sales, by my own analysis, are doubleended. Thus about 7% of that 80% will not enjoy a multi-thousand-dollar discount in their real estate commission that they might have enjoyed by listing with a Golden Real Estate agent.

When a home is sold without being entered on the MLS, it is typically double-ended. Sales showing zero Days on Market (DOM) are a very good indicator of when that has occurred. Not surprisingly, I found that 31.8% of such sales did not have a variable commission. Remember, these homes were sold during a seller’s market, so it’s completely reasonable to think that these sellers would have netted considerably more at closing had their agent exposed their homes to the market by entering their listing on the MLS. Meanwhile, the seller netting more would have resulted in the listing agent earning less. By the way, the standard listing contract has no place to enter variable commission information. You may have to ask your listing agent to enter it under “additional provisions.”

his year’s Arvada Harvest Parade took a new route, with the parade beginning at the intersection of Allison Street and Ralston Road on Saturday, Sept. 6.

The Western-themed parade continued down Ralston Road, with a wide array of participants — schools, city safety personnel, businesses, the mayor and others — interacting with spectators.

The 94th annual festival and parade was expected to bring in more than 35,000 attendees, organizers said.

Safety advocates seek to stop bicycle fatality trend Concerns focus on ways to protect vulnerable road users

On the north side of the street where South Marion Parkway curves into East Bayaud Avenue in Denver, stands a bicycle painted completely white. The bike is under a tree, with stacks of bouquets piled next to it and a circle of electric votive candles around it.

The ghost bike stands at the intersection where Alexis Bounds was killed on July 24 while riding in a designated bike lane. In the street, someone has written “another slain cyclist” in green paint.

During July, Colorado added several of these memorial ghost bikes to its streets. Like crosses, or the blue city signs that read “Please drive safely,” followed by a victim’s name, they are a physical memorial — a testament to the lives lost on Colorado roadways.

For Brad K. Evans, the founder of Denver Cruisers, a monthly bike event organization, and former candidate for a seat on the Regional Transportation District’s board of directors, the ghost bikes are a stark symbol.

“We need a better conversation about the safety of our streets,” he said. “It’s essentially a gravestone.”

In the metro area including Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties, 35 pedestrians and cyclists have died so far this year, according to data from the Colorado Department of Transportation as of Aug. 20. A majority of those fatalities happened in Denver where 10 pedestrians and two cyclists were killed. On Aug. 9, Denver also reported its first electric scooter death when Cameron Hagan died as the result of an accident earlier this month.

But it’s not just a problem in Denver, or even Colorado, said Megan Hottman, a lawyer who focuses on personal injury cases for cyclists as well as safety laws for bikes and pedestrians nationwide. This upward trend in deaths is happening across the country, Hottman said. In 2017, 52 bicyclists and pedestrians were killed in the metro area. That number rose to 60 in 2018, according to data from CDOT. Colorado officials and cycling advocates are exploring the need for new and harsher laws to prevent deaths of both pedestrians and cyclists on the road. More people are moving to the metro area, and as a result, more people are on the increasingly crowded roads.

In May, Gov. Jared Polis signed SB 19-175, a bill that deals with penalties given to drivers who seriously injure a vulnerable road user. The World Health Organization defines vulnerable road users as anyone who does not have an external shield. The bill made accidents resulting in serious injury a Class 1 traffic misdemeanor, in which the minimum penalty is 10 days in jail and/or a $300 fine.

As for cycling, Hottman also said that while car drivers bear a lot of the responsibility on the road, cyclists can be more aware as well. She said that cyclist advocates also need to be advocates for safety on the road, making sure cyclists are not using their phones while biking and otherwise setting a positive example. Most cyclists, she said are also motorists, and should operate their bikes with the same precaution as they would driving a car. With congested streets, Hottman also said that people are stressed because they’re running late, which can lead to speeding. If people gave themselves more time to get places, it could help decrease traffic accidents.

“Frankly, we all just need to slow down a little bit,” she said.

The ‘most vulnerable’ Jack Todd, the communications and policy manager with Bicycle Colo-

rado, a statewide advocacy group for cyclists’ rights, said the increase in cyclist deaths has been going on for a number of years.

In 2014, CDOT reported 10 bicycle deaths statewide, a decline from 12 the year before. But in 2015, 14 deaths were reported. In 2016 and 2017, there were 16 deaths reported each year.

Numbers from 2018 are still being finalized, but preliminary data shows that 22 cyclists died last year in traffic accidents. Eleven of those deaths last year happened in the metro area.

Pedestrian traffic deaths have seen similar increases over time. In 2015, 64 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in Colorado. That number jumped to 84 in 2016, and jumped again to 92 in 2017. Last year there was a slight decrease with 90 reported deaths, with 49 in the metro area.

Although the organization has “bicycle” in the name, Todd says Bicycle Colorado is working to create protective laws for all vulnerable road users — bicyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and now the new group of electric scooter users.

In 2018, pedestrians represented about 14% of traffic deaths statewide, said Samual Cole, the traffic safety communications manager with CDOT. The state’s transportation organization has adopted its own safety goals, and will be launching an education campaign specifically geared toward pedestrian safety in September, he said.

“Paying attention to our most vulnerable roadway users is critical to getting to zero,” he said.

Because vulnerable road users don’t have protection, it makes it more likely they will get hurt in the case of an accident, Todd added.

“They make up a smaller percentage of traffic crashes, but a much higher percentage of serious injuries or fatalities,” he said. “Ultimately, what it comes down to is nobody should fear for their lives or die on our roadways.”

At a memorial event in Parker for bicyclist Edward “Chuck” Vogel on Aug. 9, Pete Piccolo, the CEO of Bicycle Colorado, spoke to dozens of mourners, saying that too often, the deaths of cyclists or pedestrians become a statistic, just another number in the group of people killed on the road.

He added that he fears that his own wife and daughter will become part of those statistics.

“I’ve had close calls that have taken my breath away,” he said.

Vogel was hit on July 4 near the intersection of Pine and Centennial drives in Douglas County, near Parker, and died of his injuries. The driver fled the scene and a suspect was later arrested.

Fears for safety The increase in deaths is causing more people to hang up their bikes for good, said Hottman.

She believes there is safety in numbers. When there are more cyclists, it becomes more normal for cars to drive alongside them. But that can be a hard sell for people not used to biking on the road.

“It’s hard to ask people to get on their bikes when all they see is death and destruction associated with it,” Hottman said.

Evans agreed, saying that even as someone who rides his bike frequently, he no longer feels safe on city streets.

City, cyclists work together to stay safe Bike plan calls for improvements on roads, trails

It’s been more than eight years since Paul Rodriguez got a flat tire while biking and, hoping to find a solution, walked into The Bicycle Shack — the cycling shop he now co-owns after he accepted a job there fresh out of high school.

The Lakewood resident now bikes to his Arvada shop nearly every day, sticking mostly to Arvada’s trail network, including Ralston Creek Trail, when he’s in the city.

Where the trail represents an efficient route to his shop, some cyclists ride by at dangerously high speeds, creating danger for dog-walkers and other trail-users, he said.

Meanwhile, where the road avoids these conflicts and provides bike lanes on many major streets, “at the end of the day, a little strip of paint may not be enough protection.”

Mainly, it’s important to be aware of the dangers, he said, and to find ways to promote safety for cyclists.

Lately, the city’s had the same idea.

Starting in 2016, city planners began drafting the Arvada Bicycle Master Plan — released in 2017 — as part of an ongoing effort to improve safety and efficiency for Arvada cyclists.

“The big idea was to find ways to connect bicycle facilities already on the streets. There are a lot of places where one piece of the street has a bike lane on it, and the next one doesn’t,” said Wesley Dismore, former

Joanne Cdebaca, who lives down the street on West Bayaud Avenue from where cyclist Scott Hendrickson was hit on July 12, said that she won’t let her children walk in the neighborhood without an adult present. She and her father, who lives next door, frequently see drivers speed on the roadway. This concerns Cdebaca, because not only are there a lot of children in the neighborhood, they live near West-Bar-Val-Wood Park. Hendrickson was hit in the intersection at South Tejon Street and West Bayaud Avenue, adjacent to the park.

He later died of his injuries.

“They don’t want to wait for you,” Cdebaca said of drivers near the park.

Part of the reason Hottman believes the number of vulnerable-user deaths are on the rise is because of a lack of laws, but also because more people are driving on Colorado roads. As people have been moving to the state by the thousands, the infrastructure of the roadways has not been able to keep up, she said. It “screams for the additional need for us to have infrastructure.”

city traffic engineer who helped draft the plan. “The vision was for everyone to have the option to get around by bike.”

Arvada offers about 125 miles of offstreet trails and 56 miles of on-street bike lanes by the city’s most recent count, said the city’s bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, Adam Lind.

The master plan identified several of the more dangerous areas for cyclists, many of them roads on which cycling accidents have occurred within the past few years. Most recent of these accidents was a fatal crash that occurred just outside of city limits on

Changing behavior In Fort Collins, Todd said, the city is changing the way local governments deal with bicycle infrastructure. Tessa Greegor, the active modes manager with FC Moves in Fort Collins, said the city has seen a 22% decline in accidents overall in the last five years. FC Moves is the transportation planning department for the city. As the active modes manager, Greegor helps with planning for all types of traffic, including pedestrians and bicyclists.

She added that city government there has been very supportive of bicycle infrastructure going as far back as the 1980s. Before that, Greegor said she found archive articles of The Coloradoan newspaper from the 1960s that talked about bicycle advocacy groups fighting for safer streets.

“That’s really been growing for several decades,” she said. “Not a lot has really changed as far as what we’re working to advance.”

Fort Collins now has a “dedicated bike culture,” she said, adding that you can go almost anywhere in the city on your bike. Businesses, advocates, residents and city government all support the bicycle network.

Aug. 18 when a 77-year-old man was hit by an SUV while riding his bike on Indiana Street, near the intersection with W. 77th Avenue.

From the beginning of 2017 to Aug. 8, 2019, 54 cycling accidents occurred in Arvada, according to data from the Arvada Police Department.

Seven of the accidents took place on or at an intersection with W. 64th Avenue, making it the street most commonly involved in cycling accidents.

Ward Road and Carr Street were the next most common streets for accidents, with three accidents occurring on each street.

The city has been planning to bolster safety on the three roads, naming each of them in the plan’s top 20 bicycle projects list. The list consists of projects planners recommended the city prioritize, especially when future grants and funding come in.

Some projects to improve the network have already gotten underway, Lind said, with the city undertaking two projects to expand or create new bike lanes on Carr Street and Yank Way this year.

Additionally, after gathering community feedback on cycling, planners decided not only to focus on bike lanes but also the city’s trail network, on which many cyclists said they like to travel.

“For them, being able to get to the trails was as or more important than the bike lanes,” Dismore said, “so a lot of the plan has to do with Ralston Creek Trail and how (cyclists) can travel from there to Olde Town.”

Rodriguez agreed, saying he’s noticed more and more are choosing Ralston Creek Trail over the road, with both casual and serious cyclists finding their way onto the trail — and into his shop, located right next to the trail at 16255 W. 64th Ave. “You’ll get somebody coming in who has a $10,000-bike and you’ll have somebody who hasn’t ridden their bike in 30 years,” he said. “It’s a lot of young families, too.”

With such a range of individuals on their bikes, he emphasized the importance of safety, saying cyclists can take several precautions to keep themselves and others safe.

“Always wear a helmet, even if you’re going 10 minutes down the street, and use some kind of flashing lights,” he said. “Outside of that, it’s just knowing the rules of the road.”

Hope House center for teen moms sets Arvada apart City celebrates grand opening of 15,000-square-foot facility

Six years ago, 6475 Benton St., on the corner of Benton and 64th Avenue, was empty.

But come Sept. 5, the location flooded with a bigger crowd than ever before as the community came together to celebrate the grand opening of the newly built Hope House of Colorado Resource Center, the 15,000-square-foot-facility that now stands on the property.

Approximately 350 community members attended the event to take a tour and learn more about the center and Hope House, which supports teen moms by providing baby supplies, educational and self-improvement classes, a residential program and other resources.

The nonprofit consists of a residential home on Benton Street and the new center. The building includes childcare space, classroom space, a workout room, a laundry room, a dining room and the “Mama Bear Cave” — named by Hope House participants — where the moms can spend time with one another. It will allow Hope House to provide its community programming to 450 moms per year,

“When I first heard about Hope House, I didn’t even think it was real, and I think a lot of moms still have that first thought,” said Hope House mom Diana Reyes, 21.

Because of that, it’s important to get the word out, she said, and the new center will do just that.

“It’s bigger and now that it’s more central, it’s a lot closer to everybody,” she said — and fellow moms, such as Denver resident Alixandria Jones, agreed.

“All of Colorado should know what they do,” she said. “There are a lot of teen moms who need to know life will

go on. Hopefully one day, it could go nationwide.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, there were 3,104 births among women under age 20 in Colorado in 2016.

The nonprofit is growing in its ability to serve more of these women, said Executive Director Lisa Steven, attributing the success to a number of groups, including Fellowship Covenant Church, HomeAid and Meritage Homes, who sponsored the project, and the city of Arvada.

The centralization of both Hope House facilities on Benton Street has made Arvada the only city in the area to offer such comprehensive services to teen moms — a byproduct of city council’s determination to collaborate with nonprofits, Mayor Marc Williams said at the event.

To be sure, Hope House expects women from all over the area to come to Arvada for the center, with many already traveling in from other cities: Lakewood, Parker, Aurora and Denver,

to name a few.

Some commute more than an hour each day to get to Hope House, a testament to the uniqueness and necessity of the nonprofit, said Hope House graduate Janelle Markel.

“It’s important for Hope House to be here because there are so many teen moms out there who feel helpless,” she said. “They have a kid and think they have to stay home,” but Hope House teaches the girls that they can do anything with support, she said.

Williams, who cut the ribbon alongside Markel, said the city particularly supports the nonprofit because “it’s not a hand-out; it’s a hand up.”

Jenelle Yarrish, who graduated from Hope House, likewise praised the nonprofit: “it’s this space to be able to grow,” she said.

“It’s so hard to adjust to being a mom after coming out of your teen years. It’s nice there’s a place to teach you,” she said. “My quality of life has improved because Hope House inspired me to be a better person.”

Many people see bicycle infrastructure, such as protected bike lanes, as something that only benefits cyclists, said Wesley Marshall, an associate professor in the department of civil engineering at the University of Colorado at Denver.

Marshall has been doing research and data studies of cities with and without bicycle infrastructure. Narrower roads mean slower speeds, he said.

“Cities with a ton of bicycling are some of the safest in the world,” he said of his research. “The gist of it is about slowing cars down and building a bigger network.”

Fort Collins is currently working to update its bicycle and pedestrian master plans, Greegor said. Projects include improving street crossing areas on major streets. Greegor said that if people don’t feel safe crossing a street, they often won’t ride their bikes or walk places.

The plans are also looking at places where the city can slow traffic. One thing that the data and all parties can agree on is that speed plays a large role in fatal accidents. The faster you go, the more likely it is that someone will not walk away from that accident, said Jill Locantore, the executive director of Walk Denver. Walk Denver is a pedestrian advocacy group.

On Aug. 7, Mayor Michael B. Hancock of Denver announced that the city would lower the speed limits on five arterial streets as a result of recent bicycle deaths. For Locantore, this is a good first step. Arterials are where most of the traffic happens.

Because they are usually more complicated streets, they also need more complicated solutions when it comes to the safety of road users.

“We’re definitely glad to see them focusing on specifically arterials,” Locantore said.

Many of those arterials also make up what is called the High Injury Network in Denver. That’s where 5% of the streets account for 50% of the fatalities. Some of those roads include Colfax Avenue, as well as Federal and Sheridan boulevards.

Several of those roads stretch into other cities in the metro area, such as Englewood and Lakewood. Sheridan in particular is dangerous for pedes-

KAILYN LAMB trians, Locantore said, because there’s little-to-no sidewalk to speak of. It’s also a major transit street.

“The farther away you get from Denver, the more highway-like those arterials become,” she added.

For CDOT, safety is the number one concern when building roadways, Cole said. The department uses an engineering team on new projects, as well as improvement projects to make sure that streets are designed to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe. Slower speeds, improved lighting and raised medians are some of the ways of handling that.

CDOT also has education campaigns on pedestrian safety, he said, adding “we’re not just building roads and leave it at that.”

Building a network Bicycle infrastructure can be frustrating for people trying to get from one place to another. Lanes in Denver are not well connected right now, Evans said, adding that “we haven’t really invested in creating a safe network.”

Historically, street planning has all been car-first, leaving pedestrians and bicyclists to navigate their way around that.

From city to city, this is also a problem. Those bike networks don’t translate as the street flows from Denver into other metro area cities.

“There’s no program for Englewood to draw off what Denver has,” he said as an example.

Englewood recently added a painted bike lane to Dartmouth Avenue. The lane goes from Inca Street to South University Boulevard. University is on the border of Denver and Englewood.

Evans added that in Denver, there is no advocate group specifically for cyclists. BikeDenver recently merged with Bicycle Colorado in May. When that happened, Evans said it created a vacuum, and Denver lost a voice working for change.

For Evans, it doesn’t do people on either side any good to “demonize” drivers, cyclists or pedestrians. Their efforts would be better spent focusing on getting cities to make changes in how they build roadways.

Taking action One of the keys to success in Fort Collins has been having funding specifically for these bike projects, Greegor said.

The city passed a sales tax initiative that pays for projects. Through grants, the city is also able to have dedicated

staff on its bicycle program.

The city also created a complete street standard that requires new streets or upgrade projects to consider the safety of all modes of transportation. “(New projects) have to meet these standards in order to build those developments,” Greegor said.

For a long time, Evans said he had been avoiding the ghost bike memorials. But when Scott Hendrickson, an avid cyclist and friend, was killed, Evans stepped in to help, painting an old bike of Hendrickson’s for the memorial placed in West-Bar-Val-Wood Park.

“This one kind of hit home when it was with Scott. It was one of his first road bikes,” he said of the bike he and Scott’s daughter Madison painted.

While Evans believes that the plans created for Vision Zero Denver are a great in theory, he feels that the city has been slow to implement it. He also added that 2011 plans from Denver Moves have also not been implemented quickly.

Locantore agrees.

She also added that although lowering speeds is a good first step, it is just that: a step. Roads like Colfax may have a posted speed limit of 35 mph, but they are designed so that drivers can go 10 or even 20 miles over that.

Wider streets also make it hard for pedestrians to safely cross. These designs, Locantore said, often “put people in conflict with each other.”

“It’s the environment itself that’s causing those unsafe behaviors. We fundamentally need to redesign our streets,” she said. “There’s only so much you can do to protect yourself as an individual.”

Election Day 2019 is coming What you need to know about voting in Jefferson County

Election Day falls on Nov. 5 this year.

In Jefferson County, voters have a few options on how to register and vote.

Register The first step to voting is to make sure you’re registered and that your registration is up-to-date with your current address. This can be checked and updated online on the Colorado Secretary of State’s website.

New voters with a Colorado driver’s license or ID card may register online.

Those who don’t have a driver’s license or Colorado ID, or for those who prefer to fill out a paper form, a printable version can be found on the Colorado Secretary of State’s website.

Once the form is completed and signed, it needs to be submitted to the Jefferson County’s Clerk and Recorder. Voter registrations are also accepted at driver’s license offices in Jeffco and the Jefferson County Elections Division.

Or, it can be mailed to Colorado Department of State Elections Division, 1700 Broadway, Suite 200, Denver, CO 80290.

Vote There are a couple of ways that Jeffco residents can cast their vote this election — by mail, drop off or in-person.

Those who are up-to-date with their registration will receive a ballot in the mail, some may arrive as early as mid-October.

The most important thing to remember is to get your ballot turned in on time. All ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5.

Mail — Make sure to include adequate first-class postage. It is recomended to mail your ballot at least seven days prior to Election Day to ensure that it reaches the polls in time.

Drop off — There are a number of drop off locations throughout Jefferson County. These can be accessed 24 hours a day from Oct. 14 to Nov. 5, but polls close at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.

Other than the Jeffco courts and admin building, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, these include city halls in

Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Edgewater. Some public places such as libraries, Department of Motor Vehicle locations and rec centers also have drop off boxes. Find a complete list and an interactive map at www.votejeffco.com.

In person — There are many Voter Service & Polling Centers located throughout the county. They can also be found on the abovementioned website.

There are also a number of locations throughout the county where you can vote in-person on Election Day. Hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For voters in the Jefferson County School District, Nov. 5 will see them select two representatives to sit on the school board, which is made up of five seats total.

The representatives will serve a four-year term, with one elected to the Director District 3 position and one to the Director District 4 position.

Currently, those positions are held by Ali Lasell and Amanda Stevens. Both those incumbents are choosing not to run for reelection.

Two contenders have declared their candidacy for each position: Director District 3 Stephanie Schooley is an Applewood

resident and has worked with Denver Public Schools, the Colorado Department of Education and education nonprofit Campus Compact of the Mountain West.

Robert Applegate is a research analyst who serves as the secretary and treasurer for the Colorado Military Academy Board of Directors. Applegate was a member of the Board of Golden Schools Foundation and the Advisory Board for the Colorado Commission of Higher Education.

Four positions, 10 candidates in Arvada elections

The 2019 Arvada elections will see more than half its city council seats up for reelection, with at least two contenders running for each seat.

Four positions — for mayor and three city council seats — are open this year. In total, the council consists of seven members, including the mayor, four district members and two at-large members.

City council members are elected to four-year terms, with the ability to serve up to three terms in a single seat.

Ten individuals have declared their candidacy for this year’s election, with three running for mayor, three for district 2, two for district 4 and two for the atlarge seat: Mayor Marc Williams, the current mayor of Arvada first elected in 2011, is running for re-election this year after serving two terms as mayor. Williams also served three terms as a council mem-

ber at-large, elected in 1999.

Dave Palm is a small business owner in Arvada and serves on the Arvada Historical Society.

Palm ran for the at-large seat in 2017.

Harriet Hall acted as chief executive officer and president at the Jefferson Center for Mental Health for 34 years. She is a member of the Arvada Sustainability Advisory Committee and the Community Table Board of Directors.

Police search for suspect after 90 vehicles damaged

The Arvada Police Department is investigating a series of incidents that have damaged roughly 90 Arvada vehicles and a handful of houses.

The incidents began Aug. 25, when an unknown suspect damaged 30 car windows, possibly with a BB gun, said the department’s Detective Dave Snelling. On Aug. 27, 10 more vehicles were damaged, and Sept. 6, approximately 90 had been damaged.

The shootings have mostly occurred in areas north of 58th Avenue and west of Simms Street, Snelling said, with incidents taking place inside and outside city limits.

The lead investigator on the case, Detective R. Hille, is looking into a Nissan SUV of unknown color that appears to be associated with the crimes.

The department requests that those near the incidents check any footage they have available, such as that recorded by a doorbell camera.

“If we connect these cases, we’re looking at felony criminal mischief,” Snelling said. “It’s very frustrating to be these victims and have to take a day off of work and pay for repairs. This is costing people a lot of money and headache.”

people. I needed to mourn, to grieve in solidarity.

The leadership of the organization where I worked understood this. Everyone was allowed, encouraged even, to cluster, in our confusion and shock, around a television in the cafeteria.

Pizza was delivered, for the entire office. And, perhaps most importantly, any of us who wanted to go home – to families, to loved ones, to mourn on our own – were urged to do so.

I stayed at the office. My own support system was there, my work – even with the little attention I gave it – was a comfort. When I did go home, I ran to my neighbor’s house and pounded on the door, unwilling to be alone with the unfolding events.

The following year, on the first anniversary of September 11, 2001, I happened to be in Paris, where we as

As the years have passed, I to believe that we continue to honor the victims, the survivors, the first responders, and the families when we acknowledge their sacrifices and still confidently live our lives.

I’m sure most of us remember exactly where we were when we first received the news. I was driving to work when I heard that a small plane had careened into the Twin Towers, apparently by accident.

By the time I reached my office, however, it was clear that the unbelievable, the unthinkable, the impossible had happened: two airliners had been crashed – apparently on purpose – into the World Trade Center. Chaos, destruction and death ensued.

I couldn’t get inside my office fast enough. I needed to be with other

Multiple conference calls throughout the day will connect me with people around the country. September 12 is a dear friend’s birthday, and I’ll be starting the celebration early.

How many times could you hear “Place the item in the bag” before losing your mind?

This is an ode to the 21st-century American grocery QUIET store.

Before there were DESPERATION the grocery stores we are familiar with today, there were general stores and “mom and pop” stores.

General stores might sell bulk foods, like soda crackers, and feature only two or three flavors of ice Craig Marshall cream that had to be hand-packed.

Smith I shopped at a mom and pop grocery store at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Sawtelle Boulevard in West Los Angeles when I was in college.

The owners were always there, stocking shelves, sweeping, or working the register. I got to know them by name during my freshman year, but a year later, I moved and began my lifelong

relationship with major chain stores.

The closest I have come lately to a mom and pop is in my favorite Colorado town, La Veta.

Charlie’s Market has been family owned and operated since 1937. You can get anything you need, and there’s even an old-fashioned ice cream counter.

I should probably move to La Veta and get this over with.

This rat race. This Interstate 25.

This madding crowd.

The population of La Veta is around 800, and about half of them are artists.

I am close enough to walk to two major chain stores. There are a few convenience stores nearby too.

And they are always populated with a wide variety of characters that could fill a Fellini movie.

I see families. Four, five, six, seven, eight. I guess it’s an education. (It’s an education for those of us who have to shop around them.)

I see high school kids, usually clusters of girls or clusters of boys, generally giggling, buying junk food, and giggling.

Grocery shopping now comes in many forms.

Back to school also means elections around the corner

ith Labor Day behind us, the days are getting shorter which means summer is winding down and fall is just ahead. This also means we are coming up on the scariest time of year. That’s right, folks – I mean election season!

Two of the five seats for the Jeffco Public Schools Board of Education are up for election this year. We thank Ali Lasell and Amanda Stevens for their four years of service on the board, navigating the district through a politically contentious and difficult period of change.

One more thing: If there’s a firetruck parked out front, it means firemen are shopping, and that means there are appreciative women who are “shopping.”

And that’s always fun to watch.

The races are nonpartisan, meaning the candidates do not declare their party affiliations as part of the election process. These provisions are intended to keep public school boards focused on what is in the best interest of students and our community’s schools in effort to keep partisan politics out of boardroom decisions. I have had the chance to meet with all the candidates and look forward to attending events during the campaign to hear their perspectives and ideas. Candidate forums are presently scheduled on Sept. 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lakewood High School (sponsored by the Jeffco PTA) and on Oct. 10 from 7-9 p.m. at the Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church (sponsored by the

Lakewood American Association of University Women).

As a public servant, I am prohibited in my professional role from encouraging any vote for or against any issue or person on the ballot.

Similarly, I remind Jeffco Public Schools employees not to engage in election activities while at work, though they are free to exercise their civic rights on their own time.

I encourage everyone to learn about the candidates and make an informed choice this November. Ballots will be in the mail in October, so be sure and exercise your right to vote!

Robert Joseph (Bob with one O) Anthony passed away August 26, 2019 at the age of 79 at his home in Arvada, Colorado. Bob was born in Denver, Colorado, January 19, 1940.

Bob is survived by his wife, Deanna Anthony and children, Jim (wife - Diane) Anthony, Mike (wife -Jayme) Anthony and Kathy Pennell and 5 grandchildren, Katie, Madison, Marcus, Colin and Mason and his 5 great grandchildren, Joe, Ana, Teddy, Clara and Genevieve.

Bob worked 35 years at Adolph Coors company as a maintenance supervisor.

He was highly respected and well liked throughout his career.

He was loving husband, father, poppy and grand poppy. Always willing to help

with anything (cars, school projects, scouting). Bob loved to camp, and take his family on many trips and outdoor excursions. Bob was brilliant person with a quirky sense of humor. He had a passion for the metaphysical and paranormal. His grandchildren still treasure the crystals he gave them. Bob even slept under a suspended pyramid for a period of time. Even his water and beverages, were put under the pyramid for energy and purification.

As a celebration of Bob’s life, his family will hold a private gathering.

Local ranges offer opportunity to socialize, challenge oneself

rchery is challenging, but can also be a way to relax.

It’s a social sport, as well as a way for an individual to strive to achieve a personal best.

“It gets in your blood,” said Jim Murrow of Morrison. “Over all the years, I’m still learning. It seems like every year I learn something new from somebody.”

Murrow, 63, has been practicing archery since he was a little kid, he said. It all started when his mother found a bow leaning against a tree somewhere in Colorado’s mountains sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, Murrow said. Through the years, he started receiving bows and arrows as Christmas and birthday gifts.

“As I got older, I developed the interest,” Murrow said. “And it stayed with me through adulthood.”

Murrow currently serves the vice president of Golden High Country Archers and enjoys the sport for hunting and competitions.

“For me, it’s a constant learning process,” Murrow said. “You’re always trying to get better.”

Archery is the sport of using a bow to shoot arrows at a target. It dates back thousands of years — perhaps as long ago as the Stone Age — and evidence of humans using bows and arrows for hunting and warfare can be found around the world.

Today, people practice archery for leisure, hunting and competition.

“Archery is growing in popularity,” said Mark Giebel, director of Highlands Ranch’s Backcountry Wilderness Area.

But despite that, there is a lack of outdoor archery ranges, particularly 3D ranges, in the Denver metro area, Giebel said.

ver the years, Broadway shows have come to embrace all kinds of musical styles, but there are some that show up far less frequently than others.

And among the rarest to make an appearance has to be bluegrass.

Which is just one of the things that makes Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s musical “Bright Star” a unique theater-going experience.

“The show has the pace and quickness of Steve’s comedy style, but it also has the emotional depth of richness of his fiction,” said actor Merideth Kaye Clark.

“The music he and COMING did together is ATTRACTIONS Edie fantastic, with all these great hooks.”

Audiences will get to see what makes “Bright Star” so special as the first entry in the new season at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd.

The show runs at the Clarke Reader center through Sept.

29, with performances at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The show takes place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and is inspired by a true story. Told in the 1940s, with flashbacks throughout, the story focuses on newspaper editor Alice Murphy (Clark) as she searches for her lost child. The location is reflected in the music and features an on-stage band playing the Americana and bluegrass-driven score.

A mother of two herself, Clark said she was really raw to the losses and triumphs Alice experiences throughout the story’s duration but was particularly drawn to her strength.

“She really exists at the center of the story, and there aren’t many shows where a woman plays that strong of a protagonist,” Clark, who plays Alice at ages 16 to her late 30s, explained. “I get to be a woman who is very knowing and sage to her younger self, who has a lot more naïve hope.”

Audiences might be surprised at the pathos and depth that a comedian like Martin brings to the show, but that is also what makes “Bright Star” such a powerful experience.

“Audiences should open their hearts to the twists and turns of the show,” Clark said. “It’s the kind of show where you’ll both laugh and cry.”

Ridgefest brings together Wheat Ridge community Still to come: Trunk or Treat and Holiday Celebration

luegrass music, classic cars and art were just the beginning of the fun at Ridgefest, an annual festival held in Wheat Ridge Sept. 7.

“It’s really about bringing the community together,” said Ashley Holland, of Localworks, the nonprofit that organizes the event.

The event, held in the heart of the Ridge at 38 district, is a free, all-ages opportunity for the community to celebrate the local heritage, highlighting the unique character and culture of Wheat Ridge. The goal is to satisfy enthusiasts of all kinds through diverse offerings like a classic car show, an artisan marketplace, a chalk art festival, live bluegrass music and ample kids’ activities.

“This really builds community,” said Wheat Ridge Mayor Bud Starker. “A community that’s able to get together and socialize together is able to address a lot of the issues and common problems they have. A lot of times you focus on differences in the public arena, so this is an opportunity to get everybody on the same page, feeling good and showing we can play together and we can work together.”

Throughout the year, Localworks puts on a variety of events in Wheat Ridge. Still to come this year is Trunk or Treat scheduled for Oct. 26 and the Holiday Celebration scheduled for Dec. 7. Both events are free and family friendly.

Holland said Localworks welcomes volunteers year round as well as suggestions for future community gatherings.

Ali Stofflet, marketing manager for Truly BoHotique, remembers last year’s Dress for Success event: a young woman studying at the Colorado School of Mines walked into the clothing store, nearly in tears, Stofflet said.

“I know nothing about fashion,” the Mines student told Stofflet, she said.

Stofflet reply to the student was, “I know nothing about math. So we’re a perfect fit,” she said.

Now in its second year, Dress for Success is put on in partnership by Truly BoHotique, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Women of Mines Interest Group. What it does is provide two gently-used professional outfits, for free, to women studying at Mines. One outfit is for the women to wear to the campus’ upcoming Career Day, and the other is to wear on their first job interview.

“These are women in STEM,” said Nadine Wilson, co-owner and cofounder of Truly BoHotique. “They are already a minority in their fields.

We want to give them every opportunity to excel and bridge the gender gap.”

Dress for Success got its start last year after Wilson was approached by representatives of SWE and Women of Mines who told her that female students at Mines get job interviews at a rate far less than male students.

As the conversation continued, Wilson learned that one reason for that is because the women students are less likely to go to the campus’ Career Day because they don’t have anything to wear. Or, if they do go, they are often not dressed appropriately.

“We thought: we can help with this,” Wilson said.

Truly BoHotique is a women’s apparel and accessories store in downtown Golden. All of the clothing provided to the Mines students was

donated by Truly BoHotique’s customers and Golden community members, women involved with the Golden Women in Business (GWiB) group and Mines alumni — some in Colorado and others who shipped a box of clothing from out-of-state.

The shop started accepting the gently-used business attire in July, and received an “incredible outpouring of donations this year,” Wilson said. All clothing left over from the event will go to a local women’s shelter, Wilson said.

“Men’s outfits are straightforward,” said Charisma Bartlett, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering.

“Women have a lot of options for what to wear, but a lot of us don’t know would be considered professional.”

For example, Bartlett added, women can wear skirts and dresses, but it’s important to know what the appropriate length would be for a job interview. And, women can wear jewelry, but must know how much jewelry is too much for a professional setting, Bartlett said.

“It’s important for them to be selective with their clothing for Career Day because often, first impressions last,” said Kelly Knechtel, Mines’ faculty adviser for SWE. “They need appropriate attire for their industry so that their appearance doesn’t overshadow the skills and intelligence they bring to the table.”

Mines students attending the event on Sept. 5 agreed.

“It’s good to be able to get advice from other women on how to look professional,” said Breanna Moak, a junior studying environmental engineering.

Her friend Shona Hansen, a senior studying mechanical engineering, added that college students have a limited budget, and an event like Dress for Success helps because business attire is generally quite expensive.

“This event gives them an opportunity to put their best foot forward as they launch their careers,” Wilson said. “Our hope is that years down the road, when they’re settled in their careers, they’ll remember today and want to help the next generation of women pursuing STEM professions.”

It’s not uncommon for 10-year-old Amy Watson of Broomfield to get goofy and dance around the house.

Watson, who is autistic and deaf, has been dancing nearly every week for the past three years at Feel the Beat in Wheat Ridge.

“She’s learning to dance, but the focus is more on having fun,” said Amy Watson’s mother Jenny. “Kids just want to have fun (and) I love seeing her have a great time.”

At Feel the Beat, it’s all about overall acceptance, said Jari Majewski, owner and co-founder of the dance studio.

“This is a place where they can feel that belonging and sense of community,” Majewski said.

Feel the Beat, 5451 W. 32nd Ave. in Wheat Ridge, is a dance studio that specializes in providing dance and music accessibility to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and with special needs. The studio is equipped with flooring that has specialized technology to combine vibrations from transducers and pliable material that reverberates with the beat.

“The sounds and music are felt,” Majewski said, “and therefore experienced.”

Feel the Beat received its nonprofit status in May 2017, and in October that year, the studio opened its doors.

Since, partnerships with teachers and other academic professionals across the Front Range have formed.

The studio currently has six teachers. All have experience in dance and/ or yoga, know sign language and have

Feel the Beat offers eight categories of dance classes, ranging from children’s yoga to ballet.

Amy Watson likes the hip-hop classes because they’re high-energy.

Her favorite dance to do is the lawn mower, Jenny Watson said, who was translating her daughter’s answers from sign language as Amy Watson demonstrated the dance during a FaceTime interview with the Golden Transcript. But Amy Watson also enjoys the animal dance, when all the students get to choose the animal they want to portray, her mom added.

“It’s more than just creating an accessible program,” Majewski said.

“It’s about providing them with an experience they might otherwise never have.”

Feel the Beat currently has about

350 students. Most of them are children, but the studio offers classes for any age, infant to seniors, and Majewski said. In addition, some of the students do not have a disability — its common for siblings or another family member of the person who is deaf with special needs to join him or her in a class, Majewski said.

“It’s so cool to see the different students helping each other,” Majewski said. New relationships and special

bonds form among the students themselves, as well as their parents. “It’s beautiful that community has developed out of this.”

A season goes from September to December, and from January to May. Students perform a holiday show at the end of the first season, and a spring recital at the end of the second season.

Registration can be done per month or per season. However, no student will be turned away, regardless of when they register, Majewski said.

Majewski, 33, has been dancing her whole life and has more than a decade of experience working with children who are deaf and with special needs.

“For me, it’s all about the smiles,” Majewski said. “They (the students) become so proud of themselves and leave with a sense of accomplishment and pride.”

A 3D range is one where participants walk along a course, targeting threedimensional foam models of animals.

To help fill that need, the Highlands Ranch Community Association opened its 3D archery range in the Backcountry Wilderness Area in June 2018. The range is a mile-and-a-half loop on a natural surface trail with 28 separate shooting stations, equipped with lifelike animals as targets.

“The Backcountry range is awesome,” said Josh Bednorz of Highlands Ranch. “It’s a place where my 4-year-old son and myself can spend time together shooting and hiking the trails.”

Being a family-friendly sport is certainly one reason people get into archery, said Mike Schultz, co-owner and general manager of Empty Quiver Archery. But along with that, there are a number of other reasons people enjoy the sport, he added.

The skill-building challenge is one thing people enjoy about it, Schultz said. Anybody can go out and shoot and have fun, he added, “but it’s really hard to get good at it.”

Some people enjoy the Zen aspect of it, Schultz said, and others like the social aspect.

“It offers a getaway from whatever’s going on at home or at work,” he said,

Schultz has been shooting nearly his whole life — his dad got him into archery about 35 years ago — and he personally enjoys competing and the

technical aspect of the sport, including how the equipment functions. But his favorite part is seeing the progress of archery students and those new to the sport.

Empty Quiver Archery in Broomfield is a 20-yard, indoor archery range with 38 lanes that focuses on recreational archery and training for competitive tournaments, from beginners to state and national champion archers. It offers classes and private instruction, as well as opportunities for people to join a variety of leagues including Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) and Black Light Archery.

“We help people get started,” Schultz said of Empty Quiver Archery. “It’s common for someone to come and not hit a target their first time, but then

Golden High Country Archers club is one that offers local archery tournaments on its outdoor, 13-acre range in Golden. Some of the tournaments are just for fun and competition, such as the club’s Buckle Series, and others benefit a charity, said Morgan Whitelock, public relations director for Golden High Country Archers.

The tournaments are a great way for everybody to experience the range, Whitelock said, because they are open to anybody. Normally, only club members have access to the range, she added, and there is currently a waitlist for membership.

Whitelock, 28, of Centennial got into archery because she was seeking an activity that would provide her with a sense of community after her husband passed away.

“I was welcomed with open arms,” Whitelock said, adding she has now been practicing archery for about five years. A student studying petroleum engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, Whitelock said archery has given her strength that she did not realize she had — physically, academically and professionally.

“I go to the range to keep my head screwed on straight, whether to catch up with friends or relax alone,” Whitelock said. “There’s nothing more relaxing than being outside. And as long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right.”

In addition to Kendrick’s presentation, attendees can check out the They Were All Stars exhibit, which was developed by the museum in conjunction with Kansas City’s hosting of Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in 2012. The exhibit chronicles players from the Negro Leagues who became Major League All-Stars, like Jackie Robinson.

CMAS strategies This year, Jeffco students will also have more opportunities built into each in-class exam to practice what are known as constructed response questions. The questions make up about 40% of the CMAS exam and require students to provide a written response that pulls evidence from several documents or artifacts, Flores said.

The district hopes to better prepare students for such questions by asking teachers to build more reflection time, in which students can speak one-onone with each other, into the curriculum.

For schools that already implement such time, including charter school Doral Academy of Colorado, the reflection time has been a great help, said activities director Emily Hoch.

As opposed to the district, constructed response questions represented one of the strongest areas overall for Doral students, she said.

Doral students “share with their peers, and students can give feedback to one another,” she said. She added that, because the school is an arts integration school — meaning content for subjects like English and math is taught partially through the arts — students experience more of the alternate types of testing and learning encouraged by the district.

“Kids who might not normally feel very successful might feel very successful doing something like that,” she said. “Now that the data is coming

The district proposed increased planning time as one method to solve the problem. Because the planning time would occur during the school day, schools would need to hire additional staff to engage with students while their primary teachers are planning, which will cost an estimated $500,000, said Chief Financial Officer Kathleen Askelson.

Askelson recommended the district redirect $132,000 currently earmarked for educator pathway programming, and use $368,000 of unassigned reserves to cover the planning costs.

The $368,000 reduction would leave reserves “around 13%, which is around the safety net,” Askelson said.

But board member Susan Harmon questioned whether assigning the $500,000 to planning time would be more worthwhile than spending that money on items the district had assumed it could not afford during the previous budget discussion.

“I don’t know if there’s a $50,000 item there that rises above this,” she said.

Even so, Superintendent Jason Glass highlighted the importance of the district’s efforts to improve test scores.

Board members had all agreed that the district spent the 2018-2019 year putting much of its effort toward other initiatives, such as getting ballot measures 5A and 5B passed to increase district funds. They therefore

As the district works in its new strategies, executives are currently brainstorming a way to monitor their success, said Kristopher Schuh, chief of secondary schools.

Teacher compensation Alongside the $500,000 for test scores, Askelson’s team built an additional $9 million for teacher compensation. In August, the district met with teacher union Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) to adjust teacher salaries for 2019-2020, with the expectation that the district would need to revise its budget after the bargaining session.

The new budget will reflect a 2.5% cost of living adjustment to staff member salaries and $3 million in longevity pay to be distributed among thousands of educators who took a pay freeze in 2010. These terms, included in the educator’s contract, were approved by the board in August.

Askelson and budget director Nicole Stewart balanced the budget by assuming an additional $8 million in Specific Ownership Tax and $1 million in interest, which, though somewhat high-risk, are assumptions the team can monitor closely, Askelson said.

The board will decide whether to approve these changes at its Oct. 10 meeting.

“They (community members) really need to see us making progress and making changes” in test improvement, board member Brad Rupert said. “We need to demonstrate we’re getting the ship back on course.”

More than 80,000 used books, DVDs, CDs, children’s books and more will be for sale at the annual Whale of a Used Book Sale, which returns Oct. 17-20 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 15200 W. 6th Ave., Golden.

The sale is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20.

Admission is free every day.

Early birds can start shopping at 8 a.m. Oct. 18 for a $10 fee. On Oct. 19, teachers, Friends of Jefferson Public Libraries members and Jefferson County employees receive half off on all purchase; ID is required. Oct, 20 is bag day, with a bag of books starting at $6.

lovers from throughout Jefferson County and beyond,” Jo Schantz, executive director of the Jefferson County Library Foundation, said in a news release. “Each year, our (sale) helps raise tens of thousands of dollars, which in turn benefit the programs of Jefferson County Public Library that are offered free to the public.”

Volunteers will help set up books in the children’s department, work in the children’s department, work as cashiers and work in the ‘save’ section, among other jobs. Volunteers will get free lunch and snacks, and for every four-hour shift, volunteers may take two free books.

Community walk draws attention to suicide prevention STAFF REPORT

Volunteers from communities in the Denver metro area are joining a nationwide effort to draw attention to suicide prevention.

According to a news release, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24 in Colorado.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and National Suicide Prevention Week runs from Sept. 8-14.

The annual Denver Metro Out of the Darkness Community Walk, hosted by the AFSP Colorado Chapter, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept.

21 at Coors Field. The walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by the year 2025.

The Denver Metro Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness overnight, community and campus walks taking place nationwide this year.

The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.

Last year, these walks raised more than $21 million for suicide prevention. Last year the Denver Metro Walk, raised more than $294,000 and had more than 4,600 participants.

“These walks are about turning hope into action,” AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia said in a news release. “The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight, the science is only going to get better and our culture will get smarter

about mental health. With the efforts of our courageous volunteers, and a real investment from our nation’s leaders, we hope to significantly reduce the suicide rate in the United States.”

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP has local chapters in all 50 states with programs and events nationwide.

Pomona football electric in win over Bear Creek

LAKEWOOD — Pomona wasted no time getting its season back on track after a Week 1 loss.

Junior Jack Pospisil took the opening kickoff 98 yards to the end zone Friday, Sept. 6, at Jeffco Stadium to begin an impressive 49-6 victory over old Jeffco rival Bear Creek.

“We worked on it a lot in practice this last week,” Pospisil said of the special team touchdown. “It was a whole kickoff team effort. It wasn’t just me. Everyone made their blocks and I made one guy miss.”

Pospisil has the challenge of filling the shoes of his older brother, Billy Pospisil, who is playing at Washington State University with another former Pomona standout in running back Max Borghi.

“They blocked it so well and Jack read it perfectly,” Pomona coach Jay Madden of the opening kickoff return. “I thought the kicker was going to get him, but Jack is so strong he ran right through him.”

Pospisil found the end zone three times in the first half. Following the kickoff return, the junior receiver had touchdown catches of 36 and 27 yards to help the Panthers take a 42-6 lead at halftime.

Junior quarterback Brady Ritzmann threw four first-half touchdowns. Two Pospisil hauled in and another pair caught by senior Chase Lopez.

“He (Ritzmann) did really well today.

I’m really proud of him,” Pospisil said. “He had a great week of practice and had a great game.”

The game — which started late due to a 45-minute lightning delay and had another weather delay in the first quarter — went to a running clock early in the third quarter when senior Dominic Orona gave Pomona a 49-6 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Now, Pomona heads into a back-toback weeks against the top ranked teams in 5A. The Panthers have their home opener at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada next Friday night against No. 1 and defending 5A state champion Valor Christian.

Madden then takes his squad to Stutler Bowl the following week to face No. 2 Cherry Creek.

“The key is we need to get better and stay healthy. We can’t afford to get banged up in those two games,” Madden said. “Those (Valor and Cherry Creek) are two great programs. It’s fun and that what we’ve always wanted to do. We’ll enjoy next week. Get as prepared as possible and let it rip.”

The 5A Metro West League looks to be one of the deepest conferences in 5A once again. No. 3 Columbine, No. 8 Ralston Valley, Lakewood and Mullen are already hold 2-0 records through the first two weeks of action.

Columbine and Ralston Valley have outscored their first two opponents a combined 183-36.

Northglenn soccer takes victory in offensive shootout

Northglenn soccer showcased their offensive firepower when it was needed Sept. 3. Holding off Arvada 6-5 at the North Area Athletic Conference field, the Norsemen earned their second victory in their second try of 2019.

It all started with complete ball domination on the Arvada side of the field, taking six shots to the Bulldogs’ zero the first 11 minutes. Finally breaking through after multiple close scoring opportunities, junior Luis Ramirez gave the Norse the 1-0 lead with 27:05 left in the first half. And he wasn’t done.

After Arvada’s tying score less than five minutes later from sophomore David Ngewasi, Ramirez tallied his second and third goals with 8:19 and 19 seconds left in the first. Earning the

hat-trick the veteran gave his team a 3-2 lead going to intermission.

“He is a deadly weapon,” Northglenn soccer coach Paul Skattum said of Ramirez after the game. “He is a great ball-handler with four goals this year. He is also a great distributor with two assists on the season. He really gives us a lot of options.”

With 12 more shots than Arvada going to halftime, a 3-2 lead didn’t display the separation between the two teams in the first 40 minutes. However, in the second half, Arvada stepped their play up, and Northglenn had to counter with three more goals to steal a road win.

At 5-2, things looked well in hand for the Norsemen until a goal from Ngewasi again 14 seconds later put the margin once again at two. He also wasn’t done.

With a hat-trick of his own, Ngewasi put another in the net less than three minutes later before a game-tying score from sophomore Geovanny Reveles had the Norse in a shock with 11:50 remaining.

The road team, despite losing a three-goal lead, didn’t panic. Knocking-in the game-winner with seven minutes left, senior Elias Hashem converted to keep Northglenn unbeaten.

“Luis Ramirez really just stepped up early, and we really got things going from there. It’s a lot of fun to have a game like this where they just keep building and going back and forth.

It was really exciting for the coaches on the sideline, fans, the players. You could see everyone thriving in a game like this,” Skattum said.

With the win, will come lessons for Skattum and his young team that has only four seniors. Six goals allowed in their first two affairs is something that will need to improve for a successful season to be obtained in Northglenn.

“I think the biggest thing for us is to really stabilize our defense. They played well against Kennedy last week, and tonight they were just out of sync. We had a couple of sick midfielders tonight, so we were doing a lot of substitutions we normally don’t do.

So, hopefully, we will get them back on track.”

60 YEARS OF JEFFCO STADIUM The stadium kicked off its 60th year when Lakewood High School and Bear Creek High School faced off

effco Stadium will hold a special place in Lakewood High School’s Dylan Ladd’s memories when he looks back on his high school days. Ladd, a senior running back and kicker for the LHS football team, has played on the field with his older brother Noah Ladd and his younger brother Connor Ladd as teammates for the school. It’s also the place where Ladd first started on the school’s varsity football team two years ago against Bear Creek High School.

“I remember all the lights, how it’s super bright, everyone in the stands — and all the energy coming from (the stadium). It’s awesome having all my teammates out there, and they’re sharing all the energy there,” said Ladd.

Ladd joined his teammates on Aug. 30 at Jeffco Stadium to face off against Bear Creek High School, a game that ended in a 35-27 victory for Lakewood. While the game marked the start of the season for both teams, it also was an important milestone for Jeffco Stadium — its 60th anniversary.

On Sept. 5, 1959, Cheyenne High School from Wyoming played against Lakewood High School in the first ever football game at Jeffco Stadium, located at 500 Kipling St. in Lakewood. Fast forward 60 years later, and the stadium is still hosting a variety of events including football games, track & field competitions, marching band events, Lakewood’s Fourth of July celebration and other events.

“I’ve been going there since I was young. It’s always been a place that I call home,” said Josh Ramos, a senior linebacker and tight end for Bear Creek High School. “I love the atmosphere, and it’s one of the better stadiums in Colorado. I never thought it was 60, because it looks like a brand-new stadium.”

In 2013, a new and improved track was placed inside the stadium. At the 50-yard line on the stadium’s field sits an emblem commemorating Jeffco Stadium’s 60th anniversary.

It’s been home to high school football playoff and championship games including the 1999 Class 4A state championship football game when

Green Mountain High School defeated Skyline High School 42-6. The stadium also appeared in the 1992 “Ladybugs” movie, a sports-comedy film that starred Rodney Dangerfield.

Jeffco Public Schools Sports Information Director Dennis Pleuss has covered events at the stadium since 1997. He says what makes Jeffco Stadium so special is how generations of family members have competed at the stadium. Grandparents come to watch their grandchildren compete at the same space where they competed at back in their high school days.

“It is a sentimental place. Besides the press box, everything else looks the same as it did in the early 1980s when I started going to games,” said Pleuss. “It’s a great facility with a lot of memories.”
