Arvada author, OR nurse, new author Getting into writing I like to joke that I’ve always written.

I started in junior high — but that was about the Beetles. I’ve written off-andon my whole life. It has pretty much always been for private stuff. Until May, I worked as an editor for a nursing journal. I’m an operating room nurse by profession. And this was a specialty journal for OR nurses. I did some writing for that, mostly editing.

Inspiration for my first book I actually started writing this story in 1984 when I worked at Children’s Hospital. I helped take care of a young woman who had very puzzling neurological symptoms and it took the doctors and really long time to figure out what was wrong. When they did it was a surprise. And of course if I tell you, you’ll know the ending to the book. I thought at the time that it would make a great story and I started three or four chapters. Then I got a new job with the journal and then I got a husband and then a few years later, a daughter. So the story kind of went on the shelf.

Picking the story back up In 2015, I was moving and in the process of going through stuff I found the story — the first few chapters. I read it and decided I still liked it. That’s when I started working to finish it. It took about a year to get everything written and get it to an editor before it was published. It was published in October last year. “The Mad Hatter’s Son” — it’s the first in the series and the first book I wrote. It was a big switch. Most of my writing has been short stories, commentaries on life. So this is the first full length book.

And she gets very reluctantly dragged into caring for a friend that she’s been estranged from. The friend had a miscarriage and she’s not recovering. She thinks there is something else going on. Her husband and all her doctors think that it’s related to the miscarriage. Which it could be, based on the vague symptoms she had. The two end up arguing and they go their own ways.

Not long after the sick friend supposedly commits suicide. The rest of the book is the main character, Annie, trying to figure out what happened.

Subdivisions With No HOA Can Still Have Covenants, But Who’s to Enforce Them?

Although the often dreaded Homeowners Association (or “HOA”) has been around for a long time, its widespread use goes back only a few decades. Prior to, say, 1980, it was common for new subdivisions to have covenants, but no reasonable way to enforce them. This begs the question; “why have covenants if they can’t be enforced?” Enter the HOA, an entity designed and created to answer that question.

Many early covenants had provisions that after 30 years or so the majority of homeowners would have to petition to renew them.

Some covenants had the opposite provision — i.e., they automatically renewed unless a majority of homeowners agreed to abandon them. All covenants, whether still valid or not, are recorded and thus provided with other title docs.

Let’s say you live in a subdivision with still enforceable covenants but no HOA. The only way to enforce the covenants against a homeowner who is in violation of them would be for one or more homeowners to file a civil suit against the offender. Obviously, that is not practical, which is probably why developers of new subdivisions started including an HOA in their CC&Rs — Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions.

Some older subdivisions such as 6th Avenue West have created “neighborhood associations” with voluntary dues (usually under $100 per year) which are used to create community through various activities, such as picnics and newsletters. That sense of community can in turn contribute to social pressure for members of the community to abide by the provisions set forth in the covenants.

Lakewood Estates, a 1980s subdivision across Jewell Avenue from White Fence Farm, has taken this approach a step further. This voluntary HOA exerts pressure and has even shown a willingness to take legal action against residents who violate provisions of their older, but still existing covenants.

What neighborhood associations can’t do is to levy fines against homeowners. HOA fines can become liens against the property, too, so they always get paid, along with unpaid dues, even if only at closing upon sale.

Arvadans for Progressive Action, a citizen volunteer group, hopes to connect Arvadans struggling with housing to resources available to them at a housing resource fair scheduled for Sept. 29.

A variety of community organizations and government agencies, including the city of Arvada, will be in attendance to answer housing questions regarding topics such as: financial help for essential home repairs; assistance locating affordable rents/ housing assistance; building an accessory dwelling unit; making homes safe and accessible for seniors who wish to age in place; home sharing for seniors who wish to age in place, and financial assistance for qualifying first time homebuyers.

A commonly accepted maxim is that housing is “affordable” if it requires no more than one-third of the household’s income to pay for it. As in many of Colorado’s Front Range municipalities, Arvada’s housing prices are out of reach for many households.

The resource fair is a place to connect those residents with resources that can help them.

“We realized a number of programs were already in place to help people

and very few people knew about them,” said Mindy Mohr, who is leading the event.

One reason why Edward Talbot, executive director of the Arvada Housing Authority said its particularly important to get this information to the public now is the issue of affordability when it relates to home prices and rental costs.

A recent study that focused on work-

force and senior housing in Arvada found that in of April 2017, there were 190 homes currently for sale in Arvada, 22 of which less than $300,000.

That’s less than 12 percent of homes for sale in Arvada.

The study also found that for renters, Arvada is becoming less affordable over time — over the past decade, rent has increased 22 percent. The number of units affordable to poor households also decreased during this time.

Arvada council placed bonding issue on November ballot Measure would maintain current tax rate

Arvada voters will be asked in November to authorize debt for the city in the amount of $79.8 million with a repayment cost of up to $125 million for the completion of two road projects within the city.

The Ralston Road project would focus on the completion of design from Wadsworth Bypass to Kipling Street, which includes widening traffic lanes and adding bike lanes. This project is estimated at $15.3 million with a three year timeline.

It is a five segment project, and is partially completed with two sections remaining: Yukon to Carr and Carr to Garrison.

The Ralston Road project was the number one project listed by the Arvada Citizens’ Capital Improvement Committee in its final report to council in 2016.

The other road project focuses on 72nd Avenue and would complete the expansion and railroad grade separation from Kipling to Indiana. It is estimated at $97.5 million over more than five years and is split into four segments: Kipling to Oak; Oak to Simms; Simms to Ward; and Ward to Indiana. Each segments presents its own set of challenges, including right of way acquisitions.

Property owners will most significantly be affected along the Kipling to Oak segment, which would require full and partial property acquisitions in order to complete the project. City staff has met with those property owners.

Arvada City Council voted unanimously Aug. 27 to pose the question to voters to allow the city to seek a bond to finance the two projects.

“This is the least expensive way to do these projects,” said councilman John Marriott. “We really have two choices — to borrow money and do it all at once and pay the interest it costs to borrow money; or two would be to save up money to do it as

we have enough money to do it. And the difference is the inflation in the cost of building roads is higher than the interest rate we would be paying.”

Marriott continued saying that he is usually very skeptical of borrowing money, but he believes this is the best way to go about complete the much needed road projects.

The bond reauthorization will not impose any new tax or increase any tax rate.

Councilman David Jones said the next step is for the community to continue the conversation.

“I’m hoping that over the next several months, collectively and a citizenry we can do our part to ensure that we help people understand why this is important,” Jones said.

This ballot issue adds to the growing list of asks from local and state-wide entities. But Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said, “there’s always going to be competing issues.” He reminded residents to vote their ballots from “the bottom up” focusing on the local issues that impact them T:9.625” the most.

The Essential Home Repairs Program is designed to assist eligible Arvada homeowners with repairs and energy saving improvements to their home. It provides loans as well as supervision to assure the work is performed to specified standards by qualified contractors.

For Talbot, two major things came out of the collaborative study with the University of Colorado. The first was that seniors want to age in place. The second was that there were major barriers for people who work in Arvada to live there.

“When you match the average income for people like teachers, police officers, bank tellers — people trying to work here in Arvada — there is a larger disparity now,” Talbot said.

Arvadans for Progressive Action has partnered with the city of Arvada to put on the housing fair and continue to bring awareness to the need for attainable housing within the city.

“To me part of being a progressive is working for those who are most marginalized or vulnerable,” said Rachael Smallwood, leader of Arvadans for Progressive Action. “We see it as an injustice that people who are contributing to our community can’t afford to live here, so we want to work on spreading the word of what people can do to get access to affordable places to live right here in Arvada.”

Seasoned Professionals take down AYP in kickball game

t was Wednesday night, Aug. 29, and the Arvada Young Professionals were looking for a victory. They had challenged a team of other Arvada Chamber members to a kickball game for the fall quarterly social.

The kickball concept had been on the groups radar for a couple years now and AYP social committee chair Megan Thompson was excited it was finally happening.

“I think it’s an interactive way

to connect and competition is always fun,” she said.

The friendly competition was a way for the Young Professionals — a group in the chamber that consists of professionals under the age of 40 — to connect with other chamber members.

But a victory was not in the cards for the young professionals that night. After six innings of play, the Seasoned Professionals team edged them out for a win.

Thompson said she hopes this game becomes a tradition.

“It’s just a great way to bring people together and have a good time,” she said.

Eight indicted for operating metro area ID theft ring Jefferson County grand jury returned a 68-count indictment on Aug. 21

Seven of eight people have been arrested for their involvement in an identification (ID) theft ring that reached nine counties and victimized 26 merchants and 14 individual people.

“Unfortunately, ID theft is very common,” said Pam Russell, the communications director for the First Judicial District Attorney. “We hope that (this) investigation, arrest and prosecution will help serve as a deterrent to others who might consider this illegal activity.”

The Jefferson County grand jury returned a 68-count indictment on Aug. 21 that included charges of ID theft, theft, conspiracy to commit theft, forgery, criminal impersonation, false information to a pawnbroker, aggravated motor vehicle theft and attempted theft. The defendants will each be charged according to their alleged participation in the crime ring.

Four men and four women are named in the indictment. They are Michael John Mancuso, III, 28; Jacob Wyatt Westfall, 20; Matthew Paul Lane, 42; Dwone Daunte Extor, 22; Texie Shannon Lane, 35; Chelsea Juanita Dix, 24; Kristina Julie Babe, 40; and Faith Marie Knight, 26.

Mancuso is also charged with violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act for engaging in

a pattern of racketeering, which is obtaining money by way of an illegal enterprise.

All but Knight are in the custody of law enforcement. An arrest warrant has been issued for her.

The indictment cites that the crimes occurred between December 2017 and April 2018. The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office says the defendants illegally obtained financial and personal information of real people and used it to purchase goods and services.

Most of the credit card information they used was from Chase VISA credit cards, although it is unknown how the defendants gained access to the information — name, address, credit card number, security code and expiration date — on the VISA cards. Most of the victims are Colorado residents.

“Often, a member of the enterprise would contact a business by telephone and tell them they wanted to purchase an item for a relative.

They would then provide the credit card information over the phone.

Another member of the group would pick up the pre-paid item.

They would then sell the items to pawn shops or second-hand stores.

Members would be paid or promised a fee for each item they sold,” according to the press release from the DA’s office.

Some of the merchandise mentioned in the indictment includes new bicycles, jewelry, clothing, motor vehicles, archery equipment, gift cards, mountain cabin rental and musical instruments.

The indictment states a there is a transaction total of over $20,000.

Jeffco test scores exceed state, gaps persist in low-income test scores The most significant gain was in seventh-grade math

Jefferson County Public Schools’ Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) and college entrance test results for the 2017-18 school year outpace the state of Colorado for achievement and growth data on CMAS and PSAT/ SAT assessments, even as the district’s achievement gap remains.

One of the school success stories in Jeffco includes Green Gables Elementary in Lakewood, celebrating English language arts growth results that increased from the 37th percentile in 2016 to 56th in 2018.

CMAS mathematics growth showed even larger gains, from the 28th percentile to the 58th percentile over three years. Achievement scores also steadily improved.

“Over the last two years, we pulled together as a highly-collaborative school community with a laser-like focus on the student experience, professional learning, and fostering strong relationships through a commitment to restorative practices,” said Green Gables Principal Suanne Hawley. “Thanks to the hard work of our staff, student self-direction, and support

The businesses and pawn shops where transactions took place are located primarily in Jefferson County, but also across the metro area — Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Broomfield counties — in addition to Boulder, Clear Creek, El Paso and Logan counties.

The suspects involved in these incidents were caught, but that isn’t always the outcome in ID theft cases, Russell said.

ID thieves use a variety of approaches, she said — everything

from stealing mail from mailboxes to the IRS Imposter scam. With the latter, Russell explained, most often, a scammer pretends to be an IRS official and frightens/threatens people into sending money. Or, they demand or extort your information which they in turn use to steal your identity. Scams like these generally originate outside the US, Russell said, making apprehension impossible.

“We must remain vigilant. Considering the range of ID theft scams and schemes, often ID thieves are not caught,” Russell said. “We hope to educate consumers about the best ways to protect themselves from becoming victims. Education and public awareness are our best tools.”

Jeffco health brings awareness to opioid addiction Event features education, remembrance opportunities

Jefferson County Public Health hosted an End Overdose Jeffco event on Aug. 29.

The event featured keynote speakers, resources, the Office of Behavioral Health’s Opioid Memorial Wall and a presentation by a public health nurse, Chris Hammond, on overdose response and prevention training.

Fast facts on the opioid crisis As defined by Lift The Label, a public awareness campaign on opioid addiction developed by the Colorado Department of Human Services’ Office of Behavioral Health, “opioids are natural or synthetic chemicals that interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain, and reduce the intensity of pain signals and feelings of pain.”

Prescription opioids can be prescribed by a doctor to treat or relieve pain following an injury or surgery, or for certain chronic health conditions. However, they are highly

addictive and “someone can become dependent on opioids within seven days of use,” states Lift The Label.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment states that nearly 224,000 Coloradans misuse prescription drugs each year.

Treatment for opioid addiction is available. Medicationassisted treatment has a success rate of 60-to-90 percent, according to Lift The Label.

Known by the acronym MAT, it combines long-term behavioral therapy and counseling with FDA- approved medications “to provide a `whole-patient’ approach to the treatment of substance use disorders.”

There are 22 opioid treatment programs that offer MAT in Colorado.

People dependent on opioids can overdose, which can be fatal. According to the World Health Organization, about 45 percent of drug users experience a nonfatal overdose and about 70 percent of people who are dependent on opioids, or knows someone who is, witnesses an overdose in their

Thomas the Tank Engine returns to Colorado Railroad Museum for three weekends in September

hen Thomas comes back to the Colorado Railroad Museum this year, it’s likely that grandparents who read the book as a child will bring their children, who watched the show on television growing up.

“And now their kids are getting to ride on a real train pulled by Thomas,” said Danielle Ghear, the event and volunteer manager at the Colorado Railroad Museum. A Day Out With Thomas “really brings Thomas to life for kids and families.”

After visiting Golden in the middle of summer last year, Thomas the Tank Engine is back to his regular fall visit this year — The A Day Out With Thomas event returns to the Colorado Railroad Museum for three weekends in September — Sept. 8 and 9, 15 and 16, and 22 and 23.

POLAR EXPRESS SELLS OUT IN 23 DAYS

The Polar Express, a theatrical re-creation of the 1985 book by Chris Van Allsburg put on by the Colorado Railroad Museum, is a magical experience for families.

It has become a holiday tradition for many and tickets sold out in record time this year — 23 days in August, three months before the first performance. Only a few are remaining, and all are single-passenger tickets. These may be good for a person wanting to join a group that already has tickets, or for one parent or guardian to bring one child under two years of age who can sit on the adult ticket holder’s lap.

“Thomas’ stories have a timeless quality to them,” said the museum’s director Donald Tallman. “He’s a hero to these little kids.”

This year, a diesel locomotive will help Thomas pull the train around the 15-acre railyard, encircling the A Day Out With Thomas festival taking place on the grounds.

Festival activities include visiting with the character Sir Topham Hatt and photo ops with an inflatable Toby, also a character in the stories. More activities include the Imagination Station

A train ride lasts 20 minutes, and rides depart about every 45 minutes.

Attendees should arrive at least an hour prior to their train’s departure.

Tickets cost $20 each during off-peak ride times, 8:30-9:15 a.m. and 1:45-4:45 p.m. Tickets for peak ride times, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., cost $25 each.

A train ride ticket is required for all attendees age 2 and older. General admission is not available during A Day Out With Thomas dates. Tickets are available online or can be purchased as walk up onsite.

A ticket also includes access to the museum’s exhibits and model trains, Tallman said.

Activities will shut down at 5 p.m. and the grounds will close by 6 p.m. Riders should plan on arriving at least one hour before their train departs, as it is sometimes difficult to reschedule a missed train ride.

Families may stay afterward for as long as they would like to enjoy the activities.

Food: A variety of food vendors will be available for lunch, snack or dessert purchases.

Families may also bring a picnic lunch but there are no lockers or storage facilities on-site. Both alcohol and cooking are prohibited.

Parking: Free parking is available off-site at two locations where a shuttle bus will transport event goers. One lot is located one half-mile east of the Colorado Railroad Museum, just off 44th Avenue at Table Mountain Parkway. Handicap parking is available in this lot.

Additional free parking is located two miles west of the museum, just off West 44th Avenue — which changes to 10th Street in downtown Golden — just north of the main Coors building.

For those who prefer not to use the shuttle service, new this year, valet parking will be available for $20. Vehicles will be parked in the south lot across the street from the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Families enjoy the railroad museum in general, Ghear said, but at A Day Out With Thomas, kids can barely control their excitement because they can’t wait to experience all of the additional fun stuff going on.

“Be prepared to have a whole day of fun hanging out with your kiddos,” Ghear said, “just watching them have a blast.”

Third annual Toby’s Pet Parade & Fair takes place Sept. 8

If you think there isn’t anything much cuter than seeing a dog dressed up in a creative costume, then imagine about a hundred making their way along Washington Avenue in downtown Golden.

“It seems like people are getting more and more creative with the costumes every year,” said Liz Maddy, Foothills Animal Shelter’s marketing and community engagement manager.

“Everyone has so much love for their pets. This is a fun way to show off your pet and support Foothills Animal Shelter.”

The third annual Toby’s Pet Parade & Fair, a fundraiser for Foothills Animal Shelter, takes place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 8.

Golden residents Jason and Marlo Quade have been involved with Foothills Animal Shelter for a number of years. Jason is currently the president of the Friends of Foothills Animal Shelter Board of Directors and the two have attended the event as spectators before.

But this year, the Quades are excited to participate in the parade for the first time. They have three dogs, but will be bringing Alee, a female English cocker spaniel, dressed as a ladybug.

“It’s fun to see all the pups dressed up,” Marlo Quade said. But moreover, she added, it’s important to support the local animal shelter. “It’s a community-centric shelter. They do more than just house homeless pets.”

She points to microchipping, vaccines, spay/neuter and other low-cost services the shelter offers to the community.

The staff and volunteers “give so much time, energy and love to the animals,” Jason Quade said. “And when the community reciprocates, it pumps them up to want to give even more to the community’s pets.”

Meet Miss Layla Mae, the 2018 Toby’s Pet Parade grand marshal When Brooke Dahlinger of Superior had to put her dog to sleep last November after being together for 13 years, she visited all the local shelters in search for a new four-legged companion.

After a few months, on a Saturday night in February, Dahlinger found herself browsing Foothills Animal Shelter’s website when a picture of Layla’s face came up.

“I went in to go see her first thing in the morning the next day,” Dahlinger said, who was familiar with the shelter because of her volunteer work in 2009. She knew at first sight that Layla was the one for her.

Layla is an American bully, a new breed that came about circa 2013. She is what Dahlinger calls a “throw away

Because of continual breeding every time they go into heat, which is about every six months, Dahlinger said, the dogs eventually become too sick to reproduce. Or, they no longer produce quality puppies to sell, she said.

This is when they are discarded, Dahlinger said.

A good Samaritan found Layla in a park, tied up with a male dog of unknown relation to her, and took her to Foothills Animal Shelter. She was extremely underweight and suffered from a lot of hair loss. A veterinarian determined she was about three years old and had already had up to six litters of puppies — one being quite recent to the time she was discovered.

“I rescue to save,” Dahlinger said.

“Once I saw how bad of shape she was in, I wanted her even more.”

Dahlinger adopted Layla on Feb. 4.

Layla will be this year’s grand marshal in the third annual Toby’s Pet Parade & Fair and will be participating in meet-and-greets during the entire event.

VOICES Taking a leave of absence to be more present

A

bsent (def): not present in a place, at an occasion, or as part of something.

Leave of absence (def): time when one has permission to be absent.

I have been absent … over the summer, primarily, and with permission, mostly. Although I needed to step away from what was too onerous or too demanding at the time, I’ve also been absent from aspects of my life that are enjoyable, exciting and satisfying … such as writing to you regularly in this column. Fortunately, though, I was able to take the time I needed, and now I’m back.

Earlier this year, I reported on a short sabbatical I had taken during which I didn’t open my computer, turn on the TV or the radio, check emails

or texts, or take calls for about 10 days.

I emerged with the strength and fortitude to make some tough decisions, as well as to take some leaps of faith.

ALCHEMY Maybe that abbreviated event encouraged me to seek permission for my more extended leave of absence the past few months.

And now that Labor Day has come and gone – that harbinger of football (finally!), back to school, Andrea Doray and the change in seasons precipitating all that fall in Colorado has to offer – I’m prompted

to reflect on this experience.

What did it mean to be “absent,” to be “not present”? I realized that, for me, being absent has actually meant that I was more present in many cases. Being absent from social obligations (some) and business obligations (a few) gave me breathing room to be present for two bittersweet celebration-of-life memorials, a joyous family wedding, numerous events out of town, and the leap-of-faith move that I mentioned above.

Along the way, some of these temporary absences have turned into permanent decisions not to continue at all, which have made me wonder: what else can I truly jettison from the precious hours of each day to make more room for being present?

Where can I find the time – as well as

the physical and emotional energy – to work out and continue rehabbing from the car accident last year? To practice the piano? To explore the bike paths of my new neighborhood? To spend more time with the people I care about?

And, perhaps most importantly, how will I give my own self permission to let go of obligations that previously have been so closely held?

The answer, I’m finding, is right here … within my own self. Of course, I’m concerned about the impacts of my absences on others; these are always part of the equation. What I didn’t count on, though, were the impacts on me.

Did we hear that the Jeffco school district is requesting $567 million for bonds? Did we hear that they are also asking for a $33 million mill levy override? Half-a-billion here, half-a-billion there, first thing you know they’ll be asking for more than pocket change. For the economics illiterate, every dollar in local taxes takes money out of the local economy, whether the expenditure is for something worthwhile or not.

The million dollar superintendent with the billion dollar budget has neither shown a worthwhile need, nor a past performance record to justify this jolt to our economy.

However, since the advent of teachers unions, the educational infrastructure in America has become highly politicized, where the unions have flexed their power, infiltrating district boards with their sympathizers, and as a result, have leveraged their needs and priorities against school budgets, leaving taxpayers having virtually little or no say so in this process. During this time, the collective bargaining process has consumed a largess of educational resources that could have otherwise been directed to the brick and mortar and capital maintenance needs of districts.

Jeffco residents are aware of their school district’s legacy with taxpayer dollars and are circumspect of the board’s ability to be effective stewards of the funds they are requesting now.

And fill it, I did – thoughtfully, and with intention.

Essentially, I was getting – and giving myself – permission not to be absent, but to be more present, where and when it mattered.

There is a quote – attributed to everyone from Socrates to J.M. Barrie of Peter Pan fame – that goes something like this: “Be kinder than necessary, because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.” My own battles this summer – albeit minor in the context of world events – required my presence.

And using the so-called “eye test,” you would say the same thing: the other two seem to make defenders miss to make big plays, while Booker tends to run into the rear ends of his own blockers to lose yards. But, for some reason, the powers that be around the Broncos seem dead-set on making Booker the man. They seem to have some affinity for his game that never makes itself obvious to the fans. You saw a similar bias for the longest time at the quarterback position: for some reason, the Broncos just never seemed to believe their own eyes with regards to Paxton Lynch.

And you know what? We all have the capacity to act out of our own confirmation bias. You think you’re above it? Quick—what’s your go-to

news and information site? And, generally speaking, does that news site tend to lean to one side or the other politically? And how does that lean align with your own beliefs? More than that, how often do you seek out information from the other side of the spectrum?

See, we’re now officially in the silly season, and we’re all going to start getting inundated with advertising, and social media feeds, and polling numbers, and all manner of information that we’ll have to sift through as we’re trying to decide how to vote in November. And it becomes very easy to fall back into our comfort zones and only accept information that confirms our own biases.

But, this time around, I challenge you to seek out, and truly understand the arguments of the other side. Who knows? You might learn something. At the very least, think how much fun it could be to anticipate an opponent’s ar-

gument, and beat them to it, and then refute it.

This time of year, it’s pretty easy to suggest where to find beauty. For my money, there are two “can’t miss” scenic drives.

The first is Guanella Pass between Georgetown and Grant.

The colors are spectacular, and, if that disappoints, there’s beautiful views of a number of 14-ers. The second drive is down Highway 285 to Trout Creek Pass. The pass itself is not terribly interesting— Wiki describes it as “mild”—but the peak of the pass overlooks the town of Buena Vista, and provides a breathtaking view of the Collegiate Peaks Range and its eight 14-ers.

Easy Chia Jam Children can make this strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, or plum jam in 20 minutes with chia seeds. The Aztec seeds have omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and protein. No pectin or huge amounts of sugar are needed.

Children will need 2 cups chopped fresh or frozen thawed fruit,1 tablespoon lemon juice,1 tablespoon honey, or maple syrup and 2 tablespoons chia seeds.

They can be ground in a coffee grinder and will still work. Dark fruits are preferred.

Remove fruit stems, etc. and chop into small pieces, if needed.

Cook on medium- low heat in saucepan until fruit starts to break down about 5-10 minutes.

Remove from heat and mix.

Stir in honey and lemon juice.

Adjust to taste. Stir in chia seeds and let stand for 5 minutes. If too runny add a little more seeds.

The jam will continue to thicken somewhat while in the refrigerator. Transfer to a glass jar and keep refrigerated. It is good in the refrigerator for two weeks and can be frozen for three months.

Children can also skip the cooking, if desired.

There are scandals all over sports, college and professional, and if I had become a sports writer, I’d have to write about many things I would rather not.

Sanders said, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” It’s a quote often attributed to Vince Lombardi, but Sanders said it first.

And he was correct.

It drives everything and we all benefit or suffer because of it.

The local National Football League team is an opiate for the region.

I understand it. I have my own team: It just doesn’t happen to be this one.

When my team wins, my day is better. When

my team loses, I am downcast.

In order to win, college and professional teams will stoop, cheat, lie, mislead, and cover for athletes and coaches who have misbehaved.

One college football player said he took a pay cut when he signed his pro contract.

What would Murray have done with Reggie Bush?

Or Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, or Barry Bonds? I’m glad I will never know.

There were corruptions when he was writing, but not like there are now. And I know they would have had an impact on him.

I am sure he could have been just as eloquent in denunciation, but I preferred it the other way: when he was praising a player or a team or a coach.

Arvada can do better on recycling

A

rvada is falling behind on Recycling, we can do better!

Did you know that Arvada’s recycling rate is a mere 13 percent? It’s embarrassing.

The majority of our waste stream is recyclable or compostable. Very little should be thrown in the trash.

But did you know that over half of the Arvada doesn’t have a curbside recycling option unless they pay more? Not fair to have to pay more for doing the right thing especially when many of our citizens are on fixed incomes.

Very few apartment complex residents are even offered a recycling option. And the city-run recycling facility at old Wadsworth and 60th was shut down due to the high cost.

But now, SustainAbility is open at Marshall/54th and recycles just about everything! But what about those citizens that do not have a car, that rely on public transit, or are elderly and cannot drive, that do not have the time or resources to drive their recyclables to SustainAbility?

They rely on curbside pickup, and hopefully, at no extra charge.

Other businesses such as Momentum Recycling, Rocky Mountain Bottling Company, and MillerCoors rely on these recycled items to continue their own production at lower costs,

Longtime readers know that I can be cranky. I write in a reflection of the world I live in, and I wish - sometimes - it didn’t seem necessary.

That’s when you hear about my dachshund, or Jennifer, or coffee additives, or some obscure song or film.

If I had stayed with sports alone, it’s likely there would have been

I’ve heard of some Arvada residents that are paying up to $30 a month for trash and recycling which does not include bulky waste or organics.

Wow. So far, having lots of haulers is not creating competitive rates for residents. They are seeing rate hikes quarterly or yearly with little increase in reliable service.

Are you sick and tired of seeing six to eight different trash trucks on your street every week? (I only have 12 houses on my dead end street but see at least six trash and recycling trucks driving the road each week.

Each truck causes extra road damage. That’s road damage paid for by you and me, not the hauler!

I see a lot of concern and frustration on NextDoor regarding our waste/recycling companies in Arvada. I’m in favor of an organized collection system for our city — I’m not necessarily advocating a single hauler but one hauler per neighborhood or “district” — then we all get great service at a low price with minimal truck disturbance. Similar to what’s already being done in areas with HOAs. They have a single hauler for their neighborhood with a fixed, competitive rate.

I would like to have my hauler provide seasonal woody and organic debris curbside pick-up. How about e-cycling? Want curbside electronics picked up yearly? How about bulky waste pickup? The city used to do that, now it doesn’t. With a more organized collection system, we could have all of this and more!

Nine other Front Range cities have moved to a more organized curbside collection system including Golden, Lafayette, Lone Tree, Louisville, Sheridan, Edgewater, Fredrick, Commerce City, and Dacono. Other cities are trying including Westminster and Lakewood. Some cities have a city-run collection system like Longmont, this is a substantial cost and management issue for some cities.

I’m advocating for an organized collection system, not necessarily city-run.

I know that many residents would like to have their choice of haulers, but when does your choice trump our community’s safety, lower taxes, and health? We live in a community, we need to work together for the good of the group, that’s what communities do.

Exuberant show sets tone for Arvada Center season

The café in northern Denver’s Five Points, a neighborhood with deep musical history, boasts one of the metro area’s best-known open mics, but out in the suburbs, newer venues also see strong turnout — and for 38 State Brewing Company in Littleton, that includes newcomers.

“I’ve definitely seen a whole lot of out-of-towners saying, ‘I just moved here,’” said Angie Boyle, head bartender at the brewery at 8071 S. Broadway. Amid metro-area population growth, some in 38 State’s openmic crowd say they’re new to the area, checking out the scene and trying to get booked to play shows, Boyle said.

A few miles east in Lone Tree, Patrick DiBartolomeo sees performances from all ages at Lincoln Station Coffee/Pizza/Music, located just south of Interstate 25 and C-470 along the light-rail line.

“In any given week, you may see as young as 8 or 9 years old all the way up to performers in their 70s,” said DiBartolomeo, owner of the business. “We frequently see highschoolers working on their craft up to seasoned performers doing what they have been doing for decades.”

And it’s not just a fleeting hobby, as Boyle sees at 38 State.

he first show in a theater’s season sets the tone for the rest of the year, and by opening its 2018-19 season with “Mamma Mia!” the Arvada Center’s message is clear — this year is going to be bigger than ever.

“This show is really just the best time,” said actress Shannan Steele, who plays Donna Sheridan in the production. “Audiences are in for a party and they’re going to relish every bit of the music.”

“Mamma Mia!” runs at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., Sept. 7-30. Performances are at 7:30 COMING Tuesdays ATTRACTIONS p.m. through Saturdays, matinees are at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Directed by Rod A. Lansberry, the show is based on the music of Swedish pop icons ABBA. Donna lives on a Clarke Reader Greek island with her daughter, Sophie (Mariah MacFarlane). Donna is a hotel owner, and between that and Sophie she seems to be perfectly content. But when Sophie goes in search of her father so he can be a part of her wedding, Donna’s world gets turned upside down.

“I love Donna because she’s so independent and is really a rock star in her own right,” Shannan said. “As a mother myself I understand trying to maintain that balance of independence and the love she has in her heart.

Donna really explores the vast depths that come with being a mother.”

Audiences will almost certainly recognize ABBA standards like “Dancing Queen” and “Take A Chance on Me,” and it’s the kind of show where people have to actively stop themselves from dancing. There’s not a lot of dialogue in the show, Shannan said, so not only is music the main communication tool, but it also illuminates and deepens the relationships between the characters.

“The ensemble in this show is so strong and that just adds to the overall experience,” she added. “This is the kind of show where the audience is going to feel like a part of the show experience.”

S

teve Smulian, 71, plucked and sang on a small stage in Littleton for an audience that barely included more people than the bartender and the host.

But even after playing guitar for 56 years — including about 10 as a professional musician — Smulian still loves playing open-mic nights because, for him, it’s about the people, whether he’s playing for a small group or a large crowd.

“Most good musicians are welcoming,” Smulian said. “It’s art, and art is not a contest.”

That’s the sentiment that aspiring musicians, comedians or writers — or casual performers looking for an outlet — will find at open-mic nights in the Denver metro area, events that offer a place to hone skills, build networks and, above all, be yourself.

“The thing I like the most about the Mercury is it’s a welcoming place,” said Thompson, 30, who delivered a Rolling Stones cover along with original music. “It’s a good beginner

“The Denver area has a pretty good circuit of people,” Boyle said, who network and play in venues all over the region. People even come down from Boulder to perform, she added.

‘Do your thing’ On any night, an open-mic event is likely happening somewhere in the metro area, with the middle of the week — Tuesday through Thursday — especially rife with options, according to internet listings.

Across many venues, the audiences and performers alike offer a supportive environment, staff say.

“Everybody just sits and listens to the music,” said Tim Ferry, manager at The Toad Tavern near the LittletonEnglewood border.

He emphasized the lack of judgment, adding, “Go up there and do your thing.”

After artists perform, they make good audience members, which helps them support each other and the venues themselves, DiBartolomeo said.

“We have seen many new relationships and musical collaborations formed as the musicians get to know one another,” DiBartolomeo said. Arriving early to meet people and get the “lay of the land” is a good way to ease in for first-timers, he said.

Some venues feature booked music performances, too, and for Ferry, open mic is an opportunity for artists to show their skills and potentially get invited to play a scheduled show. Boyle echoed that.

“We’ve pulled a couple good bands straight from open mic” for live-music shows, Boyle said.

Comedy and poetry, too Open mics aren’t just for music —

many venues welcome comedy and poetry, too. Mercury Café has its own open-poetry night on Fridays.

Ben Duncan, a 25-year-old from Indiana, performs at local comedy openmic nights. But, he said, sometimes it’s useful to come to a music-heavy open mic because their audiences likely haven’t heard the jokes before.

He encouraged first-time comedians to give open mics a try.

“You’re going to know right away whether (comedy) is something you want to do,” said Duncan, who moved to Denver recently to get more serious about pursuing comedy. And “get ready for a lot of late nights and beating yourself up in your car” if it turns out that you do, he laughed.

Stop on larger journeys For Smulian, who methodically finger-picked at 38 State brewery, stopping by open mics is a pleasure he slips in after decades of playing music.

The very next night, he played at the Mercury Café, where Thompson reflected after his own set. \The more people get involved in the Denver music scene, the more it can establish its musical identity like other big cities, he said.

Thompson, who has played in a band and currently records music on his own, said the best way for beginners to approach open mics is to lay their emotions out.

“Open up yourself,” Thompson said.

“And do it again and again and again.”

Sara will be reading her poetry at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, followed by the film at 9:30.

“Legend” was one of the first of many movies featuring Tom Cruise as the lead. Cruise plays Jack, a young man who finds himself in a battle against the Lord of Darkness to save daylight and steal Sara’s Lili.

Twenty-five professional artists will paint from dawn to dusk at one Jeffco Open Space location each day from Sept. 10-15 as part of In Plein Sight, a week-long live painting event.

PLAN Jeffco, a nonprofit volunteer-led organization of open space advocates based in Jefferson County, is the organizer of the event, which also includes a gallery exhibit Sept.

12-16 at the Golden Community Center, 1470 10th St., Golden.

Freshly painted works will be added to the gallery each day as the artists continue to produce new pieces during the week, and all artwork will be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will benefit PLAN Jeffco’s educational outreach.

In Plein Sight launched as the largest, first-of-its-kind plein air painting event in Jeffco’s Open Space in October 2016. The launch event was wildly successful with more than $35,000 of artwork sold. Literally meaning “open air,” plein air was developed in the mid-19th century

by French impressionists including Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir.

“We are very excited to bring In Plein Sight back to Jefferson County this year,” In Plein Sight event chair and longtime PLAN Jeffco board member John Litz said in a news release. “It has become more important than ever to preserve our open space as the Colorado population continues to boom. We feel this event is the perfect way to celebrate our parks and inspire a new generation to learn how to both conserve and enjoy the gorgeous landscape that draws so many to our beautiful state.”

“Our volunteer-led board works closely with Jeffco Open Space to advocate for the conservation of key lands,” PLAN Jeffco Co-President Michelle Poolet said. “We are dedicated to the preservation of our green spaces and we feel that now more than ever, education is a necessity to ensure our open space parks and trails are properly maintained so they can continue to be enjoyed for generations to come. 3rd-generation football player is a big deal for area family

ARVADA — The defending Class 5A state football champions looked impressive, but did have some issues in their home opener Thursday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

Pomona defeated old Jeffco rival Bear Creek 49-6 despite turning the ball over four times.

“We’ve got to quit making mistakes,” Pomona coach Jay Madden said bluntly.

“We had 378 yards of offense in the first half and you only have 28 points, that’s not good.”

The Panthers opened their season last week with a 32-14 victory over Oak Ridge (FL) in Orlando, but had turnover problems there too. Pomona senior quarterback Colten Muller finished 13-for-16 passing for 268 yards and three touchdowns, but he also was intercepted twice.

Pomona senior receivers Dominic Bettini and Billy Pospisil both were stripped of the ball on long catches to account for the other two Panther turnovers.

“It’s all about effort and control what you can control,” Pospisil said. “I think there are a lot of little things we can fix.”

Pospisil had six catches for 144 yards and a touchdown. He also had the

longest play of the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score that put the Panthers up 42-6 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. The big special teams play came 13 seconds after the Bears’ lone points off a 1-yard touchdown catch by senior George Martinez from quarterback Isaiah Romero.

Bear Creek senior Nate Madrid picked off Muller and returned to the 1-yard line to set up the Bears’ lone touchdown.

“I was just going to go out there and do the best I could,” Pospisil said of his 95-yard kickoff return. “Thankfully the blocks made a humongous hole and I just ran right through it.”

Senior David Ross had three catches for 79 yards. Two of the grabs going for touchdowns in the first half.

“Coach Madden talked about it all week,” Ross said of the Panthers going to the air. “We knew if the safeties were going to play up we were going to go over the top on them.”

Muller was solid on the ground with eight carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Therious Robison added a dozen carries for 132 yards and put in the Panthers’ final touchdown to close out the third quarter with Pomona leading 49-6.

Zachary’s dad, Darrell, was a 168-pound guard who graduated from Mullen in 1987.

OVERTIME Dave Gonzales, Zachary’s grandfather, was a 160-pound guard for Adams City in the late 1950s and graduated from the school in what was then called the Town of ComJim Benton merce in 1960.

“Being the third generation to play football is cool no doubt,” said Zachary, who is also a standout rugby player on the Arapahoe club team. “My grandfather is not a big sports guy like my dad. But he fondly remembers being a guard and picking up a fumble that he scored on. Grandpa is always more rewarding when report cards come home and I show him my A’s and B’s.

“My dad has the same mantra as grandpa and he has never missed a game. He rearranges his schedule to make sure he is there for me. He prepares me a pregame meal the night before games, a game-day breakfast and gets me a nice steak for lunch, and he is big on me eating healthy.”

Darrell and Dave Gonzales both point out that football and the culture surrounding sports is different than it was, especially when the 77-year-old Dave played.

“You just went out there rolled up your sleeves, put your hands in the dirt and played,” said Darrell.

“Back then was a lot different. Going to work was more important than the game. When I played, whether you knew what the snap count was or not, you just went on movement.

“My biggest plus was that I was smart enough to see the ball move and what they now call eye discipline. I would have one eye on the ball and move based on the ball and the players’ movement. Back then being 160 to 180 pounds was a big man. Nowadays that is the average for a wide receiver.”

Defensively, the Panthers were impressive. Pomona’s defense didn’t allow the Bears’ offense to get much going. Senior Trent Padia intercepted a pass to put an end to Bear Creek’s longest drive of the first half. Seniors MJ Allen Luke Rowheder both had firsthalf sacks on Romero.

Bear Creek has a pair of tough non-league challenges against Rampart and Windsor — both ranked in the top-10 in 4A — before starting conference play in the 4A Jeffco League against Dakota Ridge on Oct. 4.

The non-league schedule really heats up for Pomona starting this week. The Panthers have a threeweek stretch of No. 2 Valor Christian, No. 1 Cherry Creek and Highlands Ranch.

“This is going to be an interesting stretch,” Madden said of the next three games. “We’ll see what we are made of. We’ve just got to say healthy and get better these next two weeks. Obviously, you would love to win, but the key is to find out what you are made of so coming into league you are ready to go.”

Arvada West softball out slugs Golden A fierce fourth inning gives the Wildcats the lead and the win

ARVADA — Hitting was contagious Tuesday afternoon at Arvada West High School.

A-West and Golden softball teams combined for 29 hits to score 22 runs in the non-league game between the Class 5A Jeffco and 4A Jeffco squads.

When the dust settled, the Wildcats came away with a 15-7 victory in AWest’s home opener.

“We started off maybe a little slow, but once the girls settled in and were a little more selective with the pitches they were attacking, they were able to string things together,” A-West coach Brenna Millikan said. “The top part of our line-up kind of sets the tone, but when we are successful its when that bottom half is really coming through.”

Golden (2-5 record) actually held a 5-4 lead through two innings. Senior Cassidy Paulson had an RBI single and Golden’s twin sisters Makayla and Makenzie Middleton highlighted a 4-run top of the second inning for the Demons with an RBI single by Makayla and a 2-run triple by Makenzie off A-West starting junior pitcher Isabelle Schwien.

The Demons extended their lead to 7-4 with Katherine Dunson and Kaela Fajardo scoring in the top of the third inning, but it was all A-West from there on out. The Wildcats (6-2) scored 11 unanswered runs, all coming in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.

“Our start of the line-up got us going and the bottom half fed off of that,” said A-West senior Christaana Angelopulos, who went 4-for-5 with three RBIs. “Once we get one through
