Arvada fire chief, accounting clerk under investigation Married couple placed on paid administrative leave

The Arvada Fire Protection District has launched an internal investigation of Fire Chief Jon Greer and his wife, accounting clerk Lauri Greer, placing the couple on paid administrative leave as the district investigates allegations “brought to the attention of the Board,” said a district statement.

“The District has the internal

capacity to maintain all services to its employees and the citizens it serves,” the statement said. “As this is a confidential personnel matter, the District cannot disclose additional information at this time.”

In spite of several attempts, Jon and Lauri Greer could not be reached for comment.

Jon Greer joined Arvada Fire in 1979 and was promoted to fire chief in 2007.

Lauri Greer joined the district as an accounting clerk in 2015.

The Arvada Fire Protection District provides firefighting and emergency medical services to approximately 120,000 people, according to the organization’s website. The district consists

of roughly 200 employees, operating eight fire stations across approximately 41 square miles in Arvada, Wheat Ridge and unincorporated Jefferson County.

As fire chief, Greer has made a number of contributions to the district, including by co-leading efforts to achieve national accreditation for the district from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in 2014.

As of Aug. 27, Arvada Fire Protection District has not contacted the Arvada Police Department to launch a criminal investigation, the police department’s Detective David Snelling said.

Statistics Don’t Yet Support an Impending Recession

We Realtors have noticed a general slowing of the real estate market over these summer months, so I’m a little surprised that the statistics don’t reflect any significant slowing.

The chart at right is an example.

Even while the economy as a whole has shown signs of an impending recession through traditional leading indicators, and while showings are down and we’ve seen more price reductions recently, homes continue to sell, and sold prices are not yet going down significantly.

Median sold prices progressed through the $300,000s starting in May 2015, passing $400,000 in April 2018, fell back into the 300s from September 2018 through February 2019, then peaked at $421,000 this past May. They have stayed around that range since June, falling only to $418,000 in August.

Meanwhile, real estate trade publications and websites have featured numerous articles warning of an impending recession, which is causing buyers to hold off on making offers. Last Thursday, NAR’s chief economist, Lawrence Yun, was quoted as saying, “Super-low mortgage rates have not yet consistently pulled buyers back into the market. Economic uncertainty is no doubt holding back some potential demand, but what is desperately needed is more supply of moderately priced homes.” Yun predicted the low rates to continue through the

end of the year, but also predicted that the sale of existing homes will not increase. He predicts home prices will rise by 3% in 2020.

Also last week, realtor.com released a survey of 755 home buyers, 51% of whom said they expect a recession this year or next year, and 56% of whom said that if a recession does occur they would delay their home search until the economy improves.

Three days earlier, realtor.com quoted its senior economist, George Ratiu, as saying, “This is going to be a much shorter recession than the last one. I don't think the next recession will be a repeat of 2008.... The housing market is in a better position.” The biggest wildcard is probably the President’s back-and-forth on a trade war with China and the rest of the

Hundreds sign petition to save homes, stop Grandview Station Development will create retail space, condominiums but demolish two houses

In the middle of Grandview Avenue sit two houses built in the early 20th century, boarded up and blocked off by a chainlink fence.

Less than a year ago, businessowner Lori Drienka’s mother-in-law was renting out one of those houses, having lived there for years as Drienka ran the Eli Ashby Healing Arts Center right next door at 7401 Grandview Avenue. Drienka’s mother-in-law lived in the home until her passing in November.

Fast-forward to 2019 and Drienka and her daughter, Carly, find themselves opposing plans to demolish the houses and build a development in their place.

“The houses’ placement adds to the character and historic integrity of Olde Town. We would lose part of our history we can’t replace,” Drienka said, referring to how the buildings, in their current location, show what Grandview Avenue looked like in the early 1900s. “It’s difficult to educate people on something that’s not there anymore.”

With hopes of rehabilitating the buildings and running a business out of one of them, Drienka put in an offer on the properties at the same time as developer Keane Palmer, who ultimately bought the properties.

Palmer’s incoming development, Grandview Station, will replace the houses with a three-story development, which will include ground-floor retail spaces and 14 condominiums.

The Drienkas have started a petition on change.org to preserve the historic homes and stop the proposed development, as well as a hard-copy petition inside their store. As of Aug. 29, the two versions of the petition collectively had more than 700 signatures, with a goal of obtaining 1,000.

But Palmer has said he will not save and rehabilitate the houses, because he cannot. At the beginning of the project, he hired forensic engineers to

“They looked like they were rundown but we wanted to understand the condition of the properties,” he said. “We determined we couldn’t rehabilitate them. It’s economically unfeasible, which is unfortunate because at some point, the buildings were historically valuable.”

Development’s design Aiming to build something the whole neighborhood would enjoy, Palmer went to advocacy groups, community members, landowners and the city, gathering input on what they would like to see built, he said.

This feedback informed the design of Grandview Station, which Palmer says will “increase the vibrancy of Olde Town.”

“It will increase pedestrian traffic and interests, and it will bring in new vendors,” he said. “We’ll have 14 new people living there and contributing to Olde Town.”

The development plans comply with city guidelines and design requirements specific to Olde Town, said Palmer and the city’s director of community and economic development, Ryan Stachelski.

But Drienka and other opposers question waivers the city’s board of adjustments made for the property,

which will allow the building to stand at 33.5 feet, as opposed to the 32-foot height limit set by the city.

The building will be divided into sections: the first section, nearest to the sidewalk, will only stand at 12 feet, with a second section rising higher and the section at the back of the building rising to 33.5 feet.

Additionally, the city has allowed for the building to include three stories within the 33.5 feet. Current guidelines allow for two stories within 32 feet.

The city has approved the plans, even with these exceptions, as compliant with design guidelines – a decision which Drienka plans to appeal, believing the design is not compliant and that the public should have had greater opportunity to weigh in.

Stachelski said there were a handful of such opportunities, including a public meeting held by the Design Review Advisory Committee. He added that plans have had to meet requirements decided upon by city council, informed by community member input.

For Stachelski and his colleagues, the focus has been interpreting what the community has said it wants, based not only on “anecdotal voices” but on community members’ previous actions, he said.

regulations and codes?’” he said.

But Drienka takes issue with such an argument, pointing to the fact that the waivers made for the building, such as the height and number of stories, were never approved by city council.

The property’s future As the develpment appears to move forward, the city has required several measures to preserve the buildings before demolition. First, the historical society will walk through the houses and document their history. Second, there will be a 30-day window in which individuals can volunteer to move the building to another property.

For Drienka, these solutions “miss the point” – much of the houses’ historical significance stems from their location and the way they represent a historic Grandview Avenue, she said.

She and other opponents plan to continue their efforts through several means: the petition; letters written to the developer and city staff, signed by approximately 20 citizens and property-owners in the area; and the appeal.

“I would like to see the city preserve these houses,” she said, “or, at the very least, require the developer to follow the same rules all property owners here have followed, and show some regard for Olde Town’s historical integrity.”

District’s fourth grade initiative boosts student test scores After a 2018 decrease, fourth graders’ 2019 CMAS scores improve

After seeing a decrease in the percentage of fourth graders who passed the standardized test CMAS in 2018, district executives felt compelled to make a change.

“We targeted support specifically for fourth grade” as one of several district goals, Chief Academic Officer Matt Flores said. “Fourth grade is always interesting because the learning becomes a little more complex,” including that, as opposed to learning general concepts, “they’re required to compare and contrast.”

When 2019 CMAS results came in on Aug. 15, the district saw the results of its efforts: a 4.8% increase in the percentage of fourth graders who passed English and a 0.5% increase in math. The percentage of students who met or exceeded standards in fourth grade English (56%) was the highest passing percentage out of any subject at any grade level in the district.

However, the third, fifth, sixth and seventh grades saw slight decreases in the percentages of students who passed both subjects, as opposed to the increases seen by a number of surrounding districts, including Douglas County, which saw improvement in every subject for every grade.

Jeffco exceeded the state average changes for fourth graders, which weighed in at a 1.9% increase in English and a 0.3% decrease in math. For other grades, the district’s change was lower than the state average changes, except for in eighth grade math.

How fourth grade improved To improve the fourth grade scores specifically, one of the main strategies the district employed was to collaborate with teachers in some schools during the planning process, Flores said. The change encouraged teachers to “take into

consideration Colorado Department of Education (standards) and creating relevant and engaging opportunities,” he said.

Representatives from the district also provided help with interpreting test scores, said Principal Karla Hankins of Mortensen Elementary in Ken Caryl. During the school’s fourth-grade-level meetings, teachers learned how to study the previous year’s CMAS scores, as well as 2018-2019 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test scores, to determine which concepts students struggled with.

One other change was the introduction of one-to-one devices – laptops or tablets issued to students for school use – for Mortensen students in the 2018-2019 school year.

“CMAS is totally online, but students did not always have access to technology in years past,” she said.

As a result, some students struggled with “using the scrollbar, clicking and dragging – all those computer skills.”

The dedication and new techniques showed in the school’s scores: Mortensen saw an increase in the percentage of fourth graders who passed English and math, which achieved higher rates of improvement than any other grade at the school.

likewise saw its highest increases with fourth graders. Though the charter school does not participate in district-wide trainings, the school takes advantage of “many of the resources available to us as a mechanism for assuring our ends align” with the district’s, said Principal Kresta Vuolo.

Determined to improve test scores alongside the district, Free Horizon Montessori also put a special emphasis on preparing students for the online aspect of the test.

“Our teachers (took) online sample tests so they could better understand the expectations of students, specifically related to navigating the online system,” Vuolo said. “From there, teachers provided students the opportunity to take a portion of the practice tests where they were able to ask questions about navigation.”

In addition to preparing students for the online aspects of the test, the district also advised focusing on and the application aspect, which asks students not only to recall general formulas, but to understand how to approach word problems.

Orozco Later that morning, Lakewood Police were called back to the park where they found 61-year-old Stevan Sandvick dead and with multiple stab wounds.

Orozco, 19, was arrested by Lake-

wood Police on Aug. 21, and charged on suspicion of killing Sandvick.

He now faces two counts of aggravated robbery, 11 violent crime counts, one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of first-degree felony murder and two counts of firstdegree murder after deliberation after being named the suspect in Rivera’s death as well.

He is being held without bound at the Jefferson County jail and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 27.

The arrest affidavit regarding Orozco is currently sealed by authorities.

“We’ve been asking, ‘what is that different way we can teach material to our kiddos who didn’t grasp it the first time?’ Looking at that very quickly made a big difference,” she said. “The lab lets our kids see how all subjects come together for a common purpose. It’s got our kids excited to learn, and it’s got our teachers excited to teach.”

While the district has not announced whether it will continue to target the fourth grade or focus on another group this year, principals

have been told the new goals will be announced soon, she said.

As new strategies emerge to promote learning, fourth grade teachers have become “very eager to continue” their progress, Hankins said.

“We got really clear on what the state standards mean,” Hankins said. “We’re (figuring out) what our children need to learn, how we’ll know they’ve learned it and what we’ll do to intervene if we see somebody’s struggling.”

Colorado Railroad Museum welcomes back Thomas the Tank Engine A Day Out With Thomas takes place the first three weekends in September

Thomas the Tank Engine is making his annual trip to Golden this September.

Families tend to love this event because it offers something for everyone, across the generations, said Danielle Riebau, the museum’s event and volunteer manager.

“It’s a good family outing,” she added.

The event offers adults an opportunity to explore the museum’s grounds and exhibits, to learn about Colorado’s railroad history, Riebau said, and the children are entertained by the event’s main attraction — Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends.

Thomas “provides the Colorado Railroad Museum with a way to reach out and attract new audiences to the magic of railroading,” said Paul Hammond, executive director of the museum. And “the magic of Thomas is awaiting everyone who makes a trip out to the museum.”

Hammond recently assumed the role of the museum’s director after Donald Tallman retired from the position at the end of August.

Hammond is no stranger to Thomas the Tank Engine, however, as he has hosted a variety of Thomas-related events during his time at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

“Thomas is a train that is accessible to young children, and children are naturally drawn to trains,” Hammond said. A Day Out With Thomas “is a good, oldfashioned way to enjoy something together as a family.”

Now in its 18th year at the Colorado Railroad Museum, A Day Out With Thomas draws a crowd of about 15,000-20,000 visitors throughout the three weekends, annually, Riebau said.

A Day Out With Thomas, along with The Polar Express Train Ride, are the museum’s biggest events, Riebau said. Attending these events helps secure the museum’s Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) funding, she added.

“These are staple events for the museum. They help us keep our doors open,” Riebau said. “Buying a ticket (to these events) supports this local, nonprofit cultural organization.”

Senior community ‘not just a place to live’ New regulations, competitive market bring changes to assisted living

For new employees at MorningStar of Arvada, a senior living community, one day of employee training doesn’t cut it — the new hires quickly become experts after a weeklong process of training sessions, informational classes on dementia and at least three days of shadowing another employee.

Such an extensive process may come as no surprise, given how much the process is required to cover as per the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Standards for Hospitals and Health Facilities, which were updated roughly a year ago. All staff members and volunteers must take courses, “at a minimum,” on residents’ rights, staff hygiene, emergency response, personcentered care and incident reporting — to name a few of more than 20 courses.

The update was the first of its kind since the 1980s, Shannon Gimbel said.

Gimbel is the Ombudsman Manager with the Denver Regional Council of Government’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA), which serves to provide information to prospective residents and advocate for residents when issues

arise. Gimbel was also on the board that wrote the new regulations.

“The regulations hadn’t been touched since a time when assisted living was just helping with showering and meals,” she said. “The landscape really shifted, and the regulations were far behind.”

The extensive training MorningStar has in place, have impressed residents so much that some have gotten involved and attended training sessions themselves, said Executive Director Cheryl Davis.

“We really attempt to get to know our residents well. They have been very impressed with our hospitality and customer service,” she said.

Residents Bill and Kay Hemingway, who moved into MorningStar in February, likewise praised the facility’s hos-

pitality and “outstanding” employee training.

“They make residents feel important,” Kay Hemingway said.

Developed by MorningStar Senior Living and Confluent Senior Living, MorningStar of Arvada opened in February at 17351 W. 64th Ave. The 160,000-square-foot community boasts 141 suites, with 29 designated as Memory Care suites, and a number of amenities such as a fitness center, theater, massage and therapy rooms and an art studio.

The community joins approximately 34 other senior living centers in Arvada, Gimbel said, with many centers moving into Arvada and Jefferson County over the past decade or so. The increase in supply has prompted the communities to boost their competi-

tiveness in the marketplace, both by advertising more affordable pricing and more amenities.

With so many choices, she said, it’s important for families to research facilities and to call resources like the AAA to find those that best fit residents’ needs, and go above and beyond what regulations mandate.

To be sure, there are a number of communities that do so, she said.

Since its opening, MorningStar of Arvada has strived to be one of those high-caliber facilities, said John Reinsma, managing director of Confluent Senior Living.

C-470 construction far behind schedule CDOT says contractor was misleading about progress of express lanes project

It’s like the sign says: construction ahead, expect delays.

The C-470 Express Lanes project, which will add two tolled express lanes along the busy highway, was supposed to be done this summer.

The Colorado Department of Transportation, however, recently placed the project’s contractor in default after what it calls repeated delays, misleading timelines and insufficient resources to finish the work on time.

At this point, CDOT says the work could stretch into next summer.

“We certainly understand the frustration drivers feel,” CDOT spokesman Matt Inzeo said. “We’re taking every action to make sure this project is done as quickly as possible while making sure safety and quality standards are met.”

The $276 million project, which kicked off in 2016, is about 83% complete, Inzeo said.

The project includes adding toll lanes to the highway between I-25 and Wadsworth Boulevard, as well as adding noise walls, realigning curves and widening overpasses.

The project is expected to save commuters up to 18 minutes during a rush hour trip along the 12-mile stretch between I-25 and Wadsworth once it’s completed, according to CDOT. SEE C-470, P18

With the space opening up just as the couple was looking for a place to move, they were drawn to MorningStar, eager to get involved in a brand-new community.

“One of the appeals was that all of the people would be moving in at about the same time,” Bill said. “There’s a wonderful group of people here who come from all over the country.”

The couple bonded quickly with other residents, they said, while also getting outside of MorningStar too.

“We do a lot outside, and there are outings to lunches and dinners,” Kay said. “And when we’re here, there are games and programs. You can be as active as you wish, or you can stay in your apartment.”

MorningStar offers a specialized program for residents with dementia or other memory impairment, providing “a structured day and a secured environment” either with a staff member or in a group, Kay said.

The community has been the perfect place for their family members to visit, the Hemingways said, with their three children coming by often and their granddaughter working a summer job as a member of the center’s wait-staff.

“All three of our children have said, `Mom, how can we move in here?’’”

Kay said. “We plan to stay here as long as we can.”

Welcome (everyone) to Colorful Colorado

A

fter a long weekend in New Mexico, we were greeted on our state’s southern border by my favorite sign: “Welcome to Colorful Colorado!”

Growing up in the San Luis Valley of southern ALCHEMY Colorado, I have always found that these long-familiar words – crisp white painted script emblazoned on dark brown wooden planks – fill me with pride.

Lately, though, I’m left wondering Andrea Doray about the “welcome” part.

Earlier this summer I spent a few

days in Estes Park with my sister and her husband at their cabin. I was steps away from deer and wild turkeys and bull elk with velveted antlers that settled in the front yard of the cabin for a late afternoon snooze. On another visit, a bald eagle had cruised overhead.

Coming home via the southern canyon through Lyons, I continued to be awed by the wondrous rock formations, the towering ponderosas, the tumbling rivers and streams, the expanses of meadows, so green so early this year.

My wish at that moment was that everyone, at some time, could enjoy such an experience.

And then I saw it … a sticker slapped on an otherwise innocuous road sign, which said: “Texas driv-

ers suck.” I was immediately irked, offended, and not just a little bit outraged.

Only the week before I had followed a car on I-25 sporting a bumper sticker that was a replica of our iconic Colorado green-and-whitemountains license plate. This one said, “No Vacancy.”

C’mon, man … why the rude exclusivity and sense of superiority?

Everyone got here somehow, many from other states or other countries.

Even if we were born in Colorado, as I was, most of us aren’t the first people to occupy our state, not by a long shot.

Generations ago, families from Mexico settled what would later become southern Colorado – where I grew up – in towns that are now

Earlier this year micro plastics were discovered in our rainwater. We have a duty and responsibility to pick up the mess we have made or suffer long-term consequences of our actions. Micro-plastics are not only dangerous for us, but to the 18 states and 40 million Americans that use our water in their dayto-day lives. Thus, we need real action to stop plastic pollution. This is not something we can pass down the line, we either take quick decisive action to protect our planet or we drop the ball in a major way.

A public interest group that is raising

awareness and working towards legislative action that will protect our communities. We need to protect our communities, protect them from powerful interests that have time and time again ignored the clear and present danger we are facing because of plastic pollution. That is why I have been spending the summer raising support for a ban on plastic grocery bags and polystyrene. These single use plastic are a danger to our health and happiness.

This is not something that only affects certain demographics, hundreds of miles away. This is happening in our backyard, on our watch. Everybody needs clean air, clean water, and clean earth.

n Tuesday and Wednesday last week, I had a couple nighttime events that, really, I have no way to explain. I think the closest analogy to them is, maybe, the Moscow Circus.

Without a ringleader. Or, HITTING well, rings.

Seriously, over the course of two nights, my teaching partner and I meet with about 300 kids and their families, explain to them what we Michael Alcorn do, and then provide them with the opportunity to try out all of the musical instruments that we teach to see if they find something that they enjoy and think they’ll be good at.

Yep. 300 kids, all playing different musical instruments. That they don’t know how to play.

In groups of 15 or 20. All at the same time.

First of all, it needs to be said that these events are a collaborative effort; the two of us guide the thing, but without the cooperation and help of the other six teachers in our area, and a couple dozen high school students, these could not happen.

The explanation part of these meetings is the part we have the most control over, because we have microphones. And, there are a million things we want to tell the kids and the families. (I know—it’s hard for long-time readers to imagine I might have a tendency to get verbose when somebody hands me a microphone, but, well, there you have it.)

But, I’ve learned over the years to keep it simple, keep it short, hit the high points, and then shut up. Let the kids do what they’re there to do, and just get out of the way. A full 29 years it took me to learn this.

Because sometimes, the very best thing you can do is get out of the way.

Geezer candidates on Vacation DORAY

A

s a geezer candidate, I find traveling has become a challenge. I discovered this when my husband Dick and I recently took a vacation in Steamboat Springs.

The first day we lugged in a trunkful of stuff packed for every weather possibility. Since we had never stayed in this hotel, our room was unfamiliar.

Where would we stash our belongings packed in grocery bags?

Dick: Have you seen my cell phone?

Me: No have you seen mine?

Me: “Let’s check the car,” No phones there.

Dick: Call mine on the house phone.

Me: I can’t remember your phone number.”

Dick I can’t remember yours either.

After we solved the phone fiasco, later that afternoon the sun shined in my eyes.

Me: Where are my new dark glasses? I must have laid them down in the thrift store when I bought the lamp.

No luck there.

At the café where we had eaten lunch, the dork guarding the entry way stared at me.

Me: I left my Ray Ban sunglasses here at lunch. It could have been our table or in the women’s room.

Dork: Sorry lady, no dark glasses here.

Me: I’ll bet! You probably kept them for yourself to give to your girlfriend.

Dork: How dare you!

My hubby waited outside. I hugged him.

Me: It must be the stress of traveling.

My left brain is not connected to my hands! I need a mind-body connection!

Dick: Yoga might help.

The next day Yoga at the Botanic Park began at 9 a.m. The weather was glorious. Fifty people spread out in a large circle around the yoga teacher.

Like everyone else, Dick and I sat in lotus positions on our mats. I took my hat off and laid it in the grass.

Just an hour after yoga, I couldn’t understand my hubby’s words.

Me: Dick, what did you say?

They complain of trucks in the neighborhood. Many kinds of trucks use the street, including city trucks, and heavy equipment, UPS, FedEx, a mail truck, ambulance and fire trucks, cement trucks, plumbers, tree trimmers, a bus for medical needs, street cleaners and the occasional moving van. Our neighbors have trucks, large campers and boats. Are these the next target?

As far as waste-collection trucks — there are only two days , about 15 minutes each day, that their trucks are on our street. That’s much less than

I felt in my ears.

My right hearing aid was missing. I panicked. It was worth over a thousand dollars. We checked the car around the seats.

Then like a bolt of lightning I remembered I had taken my hat off during the yoga class.

Me: My hearing aid is in the grass where

we went to yoga.

Dick: I never wear my hearing aids to exercise!

Me: But I have to wear them to yoga so I can hear the teacher say “down dog” instead of ‘downy the dork boom boom.”

After an hour of crawling on our hands and knees, and feeling the grass, all we found were grasshoppers.

I prayed to St. Anthony, the finder of lost things.

Me: Dear St. Anthony, please. Moments later I spotted my hearing aid in the grass.

Me: I found it! I found it!

I did a happy dance around the park.

Thank you St. Anthony. I’ll make a donation to your church!

Our vacation improved after that. We didn’t lose anything except our room key cards and cribbage pins.

As we prepared to leave the last morning, we piled our bags on the luggage cart. The maid came into our room. Dick talked with her.

Dick: If you find a pair of my reader glasses, call me. They only cost a dollar, but still I want them.

Maid: OK sir. No problem.

She probably thought we were geezers. Maybe not total geezers, but geezer candidates.

Consider what happens in New York when the only waste collection company goes on strike and trash piles up for weeks!

‘Once’ is more than might be expected

Huffer helps oversee the department’s Adaptive Recreation division, which runs a host of recreational and cultural programs for individuals with disabilities — martial arts, cycling, camping and water-skiing, to name just a few.

The division also works with individuals to provide necessary preparations, such as strength training and adaptive equipment, for classes that run through the general Denver recreation department.

Throughout the metro area, cities and communities put on similar programs, including Lakewood Therapeutic Recreation, Aurora Therapeutic Recreation and South Suburban Therapeutic Adaptive Recreation (STAR).

Centennial resident Rick Lorie, who has cerebral palsy, became involved with STAR three years ago. Since then, the 31-year-old has spent almost every Saturday morning bowling with the STAR group, which invites those with intellectual and physical disabilities to participate.

“I love to bowl, and I’ve got a lot of friends here,” said Lorie, who often attends the weekly event with his roommate, Tommy, and Lorie’s girlfriend,

And its coming to life at Golden’s Miners Alley Playhouse.

“Audiences will enjoy the musiClarke Reader cianship and enjoy the story and its humanness,” said Carmen Shedd, who plays Girl in the production. “The piece is really easy to open your heart to.

It’s very raw and very simple.”

Directed by Len Matheo, “Once” runs at Miners Alley, 1224 Washington Ave., from Sept. 6 through Oct. 13. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The only show to have music that won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award, the show takes place on the streets of Dublin, where street musician Guy (John Hauser) meets Girl, a Czech immigrant who share a musical language. Their collaboration turns into a deeper connection and a not-so-typical love story. Songs like “Gold” and “Falling Slowly” achingly capture the beauty and melancholy of two people who find joy in each other.

“I think we all have stories about lost loves and relationships that have soured,” Hauser said. “The way that these characters interact is so real that it almost feels like you’re just sitting in on a very personal conversation between two people rather than a production.”

One of the many things that makes the show special is that it calls for more than acting and singing — practically everyone on stage also plays an instrument as part of the story. Which means most have to be a quadruple threat — actor, dancer, singer and musician.

Adaptive recreation offers options for wide range of participants

ust about five years ago, Dan Boozan, killing time after his shift, struck up a conversation with a bartender who encouraged him to take up rock climbing.

Boozan’s response was automatic: “I can’t go climbing, I have a disability.”

Several years earlier, in 2011, a bicycling accident left a 29-year-old Boozan with a brain injury and nerve damage in his right shoulder. The injury restricted his ability to move his arm apart from limited movement of his hand and bicep.

But the bartender insisted that Boozan, who’d formerly been active outdoors, look into Paradox Sports.

The nonprofit offers adaptive climbing classes and opportunities, which make climbing accessible for individuals with physical disabilities.

Boozan, who is now 37 and lives near Boulder, still had his doubts. After all, “disabled climbing seems kind of oxymoronic,” he said, laughing.

But he decided to give the sport a try and realized that wasn’t the case: “You can choose to embrace your disability and, really, you can still do everything you want to do.”

Soon, Boozan was climbing three to four days a week, going on weeks-long climbing trips alone and with friends, and becoming an ambassador for the

For the group of friends, the Denver area has provided countless opportunities, he said, with the bowling club as one of his favorites. “Anybody who wants to come would love all of this,” he said.

Other recreational opportunities exist through organizations like Paradox Sports, which provides climbing adaptations such as seated harnesses or ropes for climbers to grab onto instead of the wall, local program manager Amy Bannon said.

“Any person of any ability is invited,” she said. “Even if you’ve never tried rock-climbing, it’s still an option.

You take away a hobby that provides confidence, and the community is like glue.”

Golden resident and Paradox Ambassador Jess Sporte agreed.

Sporte, 32, competed in wheelchair tennis in the area before finding Paradox in 2015. Shortly after, she began climbing competitively.

But for her, the highlight is the community around the sport: “My main reason to climb is the social aspect. Being able to help others into the world of climbing — no matter the

An engrossing story of a sisterly spat

’m sorry.

Two words that you’ve heard all your life, say reflexively a dozen times a day, but don’t always believe.

“I’m sorry, so sorry, I apologize,” whatever, what does it mean? Is saying it or hearing it helpful? As in the new novel “Mrs. Everything” by Jennifer Weiner, is being sorry ever enough?

BOOKWORM Jo Kaufman knew that the news wouldn’t be good.

The second she picked up the call and heard her doctor’s voice, heard Terri the news, she Schlichenmeyer was afraid but not because she was going to die. Jo was afraid that there wouldn’t be enough time left for her to fix her family.

Ever since her sister, Bethie, was born, Jo had felt that Bethie was perfect. Bethie was cute and pert, their mother’s favorite, while Jo spent her childhood feeling awkward, sure that their mother hated her, blaming Bethie for it. It

didn’t help that Jo was lanky and athletic at a time when that wasn’t acceptable.

The fact that she liked girls didn’t help, either.

And so, Jo was always her family’s wild child, until Bethie started college and, through action or accident, outdid everything Jo ever did.

As the oldest, Jo had to come to the rescue at least once in a big manner, and it changed her life in ways that she felt she had to accept because not accepting them was too hard.

And eventually, that led to a wilder Bethie, which led to a sister-fight and an estrangement that lasted too long.

They had patched things up, though, carefully and fragilely.

Jo got married and had three children. Bethie dived into Summers of Love and joined a commune. Their mother was not pleased about that, or about the rift, but things had somehow gotten better over time between Bethie and Jo. As for Jo’s daughters, though, well, that was a different matter, as though family fights were a poisonous legacy she’d unwittingly passed down.

Was there still time left to make things right?

Yes, you know how this novel ends, but you don’t, really, because its 60-year journey is a lot like real-life’s unfolding.

CDOT formally notified the contractor, a joint entity made up of Flatiron Construction and AECOM, called F|A, that it was in breach of contract in a letter to project manager Dustin Williams on Aug. 2.

F|A failed to inform CDOT of repeated delays in a timely fashion, the letter says, and misled officials about the project’s progress.

“CDOT repeatedly provided comments and expressed concerns regarding F|A’s

ability to achieve the required Project Completion Deadlines,” the letter reads in part.

“F|A failed to adequately address CDOT’s comments and concerns and continually misrepresented in the Contract Schedules that they were able to meet the required Project Completion Deadlines.”

Williams, who works for Flatiron, declined to comment on the matter when reached by phone, and directed questions to a company spokeswoman.

That spokeswoman initially directed questions back to CDOT, but when asked for Flatiron’s reaction, directed questions to another spokes-

I was thinking about that in relation to public policy and public relations the other day. When the director of some dumb agency you’ve never heard of put out a public announcement that the policy regarding the citizenship of children of U.S. military members stationed overseas was going to change, it became a textbook example of what happens when you don’t get out of your own way. The statement (not the policy) was written in a way that made it sound like automatic citizenship for children of service members

was a thing of the past.

Trouble is, that’s not what the policy said. it turns out the policy is much more narrowly tailored, and only applies to a very small number of parents in overseas service and to overseas adoptions. For the vast majority of service members and children, nothing changed.

Two lessons here. One, confirmation of Twain’s old adage that a lie/ misinformation circles the globe twice before the truth gets its boots on. Social media blew up with this story, before anyone bothered to actually understand the policy.

The story did indeed circle the globe twice before the responsible corrections followed up. Not really their fault— they just ran with the

memo. Had “they” simply put out the policy without trying to be a part of the story, the media would have likely just overlooked the whole thing.

But secondly, every single member of the current government should understand the sort of scrutiny they’re under, the kind of environment they’re operating in, and that’s especially true in regards to immigration and citizenship. To be oblivious to that reality is to court disaster.

Enter dumb agency you’ve never heard of.

It is inconceivable that the public information officer of the agency ran this memo out without putting it past a public relations professional.

They could have saved themselves days’ worth of grief over this whole affair if they’d written the memo better. Or not written a memo at all.

Let the whole affair be a bit of a cautionary tale, my friends. You don’t always have to control things — try to recognize those moments that take care of themselves and just be smart about letting some things happen naturally.

Five things to know for the Arvada Harvest Festival Thousands to come together for 94th annual event

Arvada has a western weekend in store as the town prepares for the 94th annual Arvada Harvest Festival and Parade, which will take place in Olde Town Arvada on Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

The nearly-century-old tradition will have a western theme this year and will begin at 5 p.m. Friday night, wrapping up with a family movie at McIlvoy Park on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Vendors, parade entrants, those competing in festival contests and individuals interested in attending should regularly check both pages for new information and changes.

Additionally, here are five things for Arvadans to keep in mind as the yearly tradition approaches: Parade location Because of ongoing construction, the parade will start at a different location this year with the festivities beginning at Allison Street and Ralston Road.

Parade entrants will receive their number in the lineup by email no later than Aug. 30.

Before the parade As per tradition, community members are invited to decorate the parade route with sidewalk chalk prior to the parade, which begins at 9 a.m.

Prospective volunteers can sign up for a shift online under the Volunteers tab. The festival will accept volunteer applications through Sept. 4.

The spelling bee competition The festival’s annual spelling bee will return this year, with an entry form available on the festival website homepage.

Open to students in the third through eighth grades, the competition begins with a written test at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 at the cafeteria in the Shrine of St. Anne Catholic School, 7320 Grant Pl. On Sept. 8, Spectators can swing by School House Kitchen and Libations, 5660 Olde Wadsworth Blvd., for the final round of the competition at 4 p.m.

7 at the pavilion in McIlvoy Park.

Planners have encouraged those decorating parade floats to match the theme to earn extra points in the contest.

A representative from the float must be present to claim the award. Unclaimed awards will be moved to the information booth on Upham Street, where a representative can claim them until 4 p.m. on Sept. 8.

FC Eagles hoping to reach even greater heights Football team looks to improve on state semi-final performance

Falling short can be painful but it can also be motivating if you allow it. Faith Christian Football fell one step short in 2018 and the hope it that failure will serve as a motivator in 2019.

Coach Vince Siravo in his first year reached the 2A State Semi-Finals and now looks to take his team to the state title game in late November. As with all teams the replacement of graduating seniors is always a challenge. For Faith Christian, graduation has meant losing two All-State players in Jacob Thielen (DE/OL) and David Nagy (Running Back). The Eagles also lost eight other all conference players and their steady leadership.

But enough with the negatives, now about the positives. Faith also returns a large now-senior class full of experience and talent and with the advantage of already knowing the offensive and defensive systems of Coach Siravo.

Offensively the Eagles will rely heavily on starting QB Isaiah Kroll. He has started every game of his high school career since he was a freshman. Kroll now has over 30 games under his belt including three straight years in the SEE FOOTBALL, P23

No. 7 Arvada West boys ready to kick off season

ARVADA — Arvada West senior Judah Johnston is going to be a marked player on the soccer pitch this season.

Johnston returns as one of the top goal scorers in Class 5A. He found of the back of the net 17 times last season on the way to being named the MVP of the 5A Jeffco League.

“I think he (Johnston) is even better,” A-West coach Troy Gette said of the Wildcats’ leading scorer from the previous two seasons. “He also has a better supporting cast around him this year. I think he set the expectation bar high after what he and the team achieved last year.”

Johnston has racked up 37 goals and 16 assists in his first three seasons at A-West. His goal is to play college soccer and has had talks with the University of Portland, University of Denver, Regis University and Colorado School of Mines.

A-West — ranked No. 7 in the CHSAANow.com 5A boys soccer preseason poll — went on a eightgame winning streak toward the end of the season to reclaim the conference title from rival Ralston

Valley. That included a five-goal game by Johnston in a 6-1 victory over Dakota Ridge in October.

The Wildcats and rival Mustangs have dominated 5A Jeffco over the past decade.

“I thought we took big steps forward last year,” Gette said reflecting on the Wildcats finishing with a 13-4 record and being the lone 5A Jeffco team to advance to the second round of the state tournament.

The Wildcats’ season ended with a close 1-0 loss in the second round to eventual 5A state champion Arapahoe.

A-West has plenty of returning talent on its roster that is senior and junior dominated heading into its 2019 campaign.

“The heart and soul of this team is returning,” Gette said. “We lost some keep pieces, but hopefully some young kids can step up and help fill some pretty important roles.”

The biggest loss on paper is the graduation of starting goalie Latham Kleckner, who allowed just 15 goals last season in 16 games.

Kleckner also record 10 shutout victories in net.

“Of course it’s a concern. Last year, Latham Kleckner was just phenomenal,” Gette said. “I do

think the defense will be even better up front.”

Junior Jacoby Landskov will take over in net. Landskov is making the step up from starting JV goalie last season.

“Jacoby stepping up from JV, after a couple of games and practicing he’ll get into the swing of things,” Johnston said.

A-West began its season Aug. 26 at the North Area Athletic Complex. The Wildcats beat Standley Lake (1-1 record) by a convincing 5-1. The team also beat Mountain Range by a score of 2-1 on Aug. 28.

“The opener is definitely important. It gets the season rolling,” Arvada West junior Kyler Tate said of the Wildcats opening up the season at the NAAC against area-rival Standley Lake. “We have to go hard every game and play our best.”

Tate, a first-team all-conference selection as a sophomore, will be one of the keys to A-West making another strong run in the conference to get the highest seed possible for the state tournament.

“We are just trying to get Jeffco recognized. We aren’t going to take it for granted,” Tate said. “We are still going to try hard to win the league and make it further in the playoffs this year.”

playoffs. He’s got a strong passing arm and enough mobility to get himself out of the pocket and cause damage. The Eagles will also feature a new starting running back in Erik Grandados (600 rushing yards last season). Granados has great speed as well as power and should be an excellent starter. Three seniors are featured on the offensive line — Aaron Finch, Collin Dunn and Will Bradley.

These three will anchor the two tackle and center positions and will try to pave the path for the running game and protect the quarterback in the passing game. Faith last season dominated on the ground and was effective in the air and that strategy will likely try to be repeated this season.

Defensively the Eagles return most of the starting unit from last season.

The defensive line took the great-

est hit in losing three key graduates (Thielen, Rodi Pankratov and Caleb Mauldin). However their backups played most of the last year and are more than ready to assume the starting roles. The linebackers are all returning starters from last year and all we All-Conference performers: Aron Buchmann, Joel Burck, Graham Kroll and Micheal Osgood. Faith had a top-10 defense last year and stayed consistent in their stinginess last season.

Faith will play its usual tough non-conference schedule by opening at home against #4 Resurrection Christian, 7 p.m., on Sept. 6. The other three teams in the non-conference are Kent Denver, Manitou Springs and University (Homecoming, Sept. 27).

Faith will likely have to defeat Bennett and D’Evelyn to win the Flatirons Conference, but will face both those opponents at home.

The Eagles hope to play deep into those playoffs again which conclude on Nov. 30 at Colorado State University at Pueblo.

How companies are creating healthier worksites (BPT) - Worksite hurdles are the issues or hassles that prevent employees from being engaged, successful and happy at their jobs. To help overcome these hurdles, and for more satisfied, productive employees, an increasing number of employers are looking to their employee well-being programs for answers.

According to a survey from Fidelity Investments and the National Business Group on Health, more than two-thirds (67 percent) of companies plan to expand their well-being programs over the next few years. Also, UnitedHealthcare’s 2019 Wellness Check Up Survey revealed that more than half (57 percent) of employees with access to an employer-sponsored well-being program say the initiative has had a positive effect on their health.

Creating a culture of well-being in the workplace can be challenging for employers, but it doesn’t have to be. Ann Marie O’Brien, R.N., national director of health strategies, UnitedHealthcare, shares the following tips to help employers align their worksites with a focus on employee engagement, health and well-being.

Encourage staying active

Having a meeting? Put your walking shoes on and talk on the go by having a “walk-and-talk” meeting.

Employees whose jobs require them to sit at a desk all day may appreciate the change, and it may be good for their health.
