Jeffco leaders campaigning to downgrade TABOR Ballot measure 1A would let county keep more tax revenue

About 100 people attended a campaign kickoff and fundraiser in support Jeffco ballot measure 1A on Aug. 21.

The ballot question will ask voters to decide if the county government should be allowed to keep excess revenue from the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) as a possible solution to the county’s financial challenges. All county residents, including those who live in the county’s municipalities, will be voting on ballot measure 1A this November.

The event was hosted by Jefferson County Commissioners Casey Tighe and Lesley Dahlkemper, and Sheriff Jeff Shrader. Commissioner Libby Szabo had a conflicting meeting with the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), Dahlkemper said at the event.

TRACER, the state’s campaign finance disclosure website, did not list a campaign committee in opposition of Jeffco’s 1A ballot question, as of Aug. 26.

TABOR, in brief, limits the amount of revenue that can be retained in a particular year from sources, such as taxes and fees. The county’s website states that the amount over collected is given back to the tax payers the following year after over collection.

Should Jeffco’s ballot measure pass, there will be a seven-year sunset on the initiative.

The county recently identified that about $16.1 million would need to be trimmed next year for the county to achieve a balanced 2020 budget and maintain an appropriate reserve fund. To accomplish this, the county proposed a 7% budget reduction in 2020 for all county offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund.

The general fund is the county’s principle operating fund that is financed primarily by property taxes.

However, instead of requiring cuts, on July 23, the county commissioners, one Republican and two Democrats, voted unanimously to put a question concerning TABOR on the upcoming ballot. Year SEE TABOR, P3

From 2012 to 2015, I was an instructional coach at North Arvada Middle School and from 2015 to 2016, I held an assistant principal intern position at Green Mountain High School. Then, the assistant principal position opened here at Thomson, and I worked in that position for three years.

Moving to an elementary school In the beginning of my career, I never thought I would step into elementary position, so when I did, I really saw that as a challenge. But when I started at Thomson, I had an 18-month-old, so early education was something I wanted to know more about.

The first couple weeks I was here, I didn’t know what to do with a first-grader or a kindergartener.

I tried to be in those classrooms a lot just to figure out, `what’s going on with these?’ Now people tell me, `you spend more of your time with those little ones than anything.’

They’ve won me over.

Goals as principal We have a saying here: it’s high expectations for you, for me, for all of us. So that’s one of my goals, to keep those high expectations for all of us. Another goal is to really make sure students are getting their needs met academically.

one will only be for the $16.1 million needed to avoid the budget cuts, Tighe said.

The first year will cost the average homeowner of a $400,000 home about $4.50 per month, or about 2.7% of their total average property tax bill, Tighe said.

“For a small investment, the citizens of Jefferson County can provide protection of the quality of life that we all enjoy,” said Rebecca Winning, a Littleton resident who has lived in Jefferson County for 10 years, who is also part of the Yes on 1A campaign team.

One argument against the measure,

however, is that some families may not be able to afford the additional tax burden. Another is that business property owners will see a greater increase and “these additional taxes will likely be passed on to consumers,” according to the county’s website.

Jefferson County is doing the right thing by asking voters for permission to retain the excess revenue, said Amy Oliver Cooke, executive vice president of the Independence Institute and a coalition member for No on Proposition CC, a ballot measure also concerning TABOR that all Colorado voters will be deciding on this November.

“That is the beauty of the Tax Payer’s Bill of Rights,” she said. “We get to decide on the size and scope of government that we want are willing to pay for.”

Still, Jeffco’s 1A ballot question is a

tax increase, she added, because Jefferson County is asking to keep more of the taxpayer’s money.

According to Ballotpedia, if Colorado Proposition CC passes, the state would be allowed to retain excess revenue — currently required to refund under TABOR — to go to transportation and education.

According to the county’s website, if Jeffco’s 1A ballot measure passes, the revenue would be used to fund the cost of county government services, which includes but is not limited to, “fire mitigation efforts, the repair and maintenance of the county’s vital transportation infrastructure, adequate jail beds and patrol personnel.”

The Yes on 1A campaign is being called Keep Jeffco Safe because of the cuts to public safety that would occur if the measure doesn’t pass, said Preston

Gibson, a Jefferson County resident for more than 20 years, and an organizer for the campaign.

Per a press release sent out on April 23, the sheriff ’s office says that in order to achieve a 7% reduction in his department, it would have to cut its budget by $6.7 million. This will mean fewer jail beds for criminals and key law enforcement positions being left unfilled, Shrader said in previous interviews.

But the cuts would affect more than just public safety, Gibson said. Valued services such as those provided by roads and bridges and public health would also be affected.

“All will be impacted if we can’t retain these tax dollars,” Gibson said.

“We’re to the point that severe impacts are going to occur. These services provide the quality of life that people in Jeffco want, expect and deserve.”

All-Electric Homes Are Practical Now, and Can Help Address Climate Change

The typical American home is powered electrically but heated by natural gas, propane or other fossil fuel. We can generate our own electricity with solar panels, but there’s no way for us to generate natural gas or other fossil fuel energy, so the transition to a “net zero energy” lifestyle necessitates scrapping fossil fuels and going all-electric.

Fortunately, technology has advanced — just in the last decade — to the point where going all-electric is totally practical and actually quite affordable.

At Golden Real Estate, our office was heated with natural gas until November 2017, when we installed a heat pump “mini-split” system and had our natural gas meter removed. Since we have 20 kilowatts of solar photovoltaic panels, we were able to eliminate our natural gas bill but not increase our electric bill. We are still paying just $11 per month to be connected to the electric grid (which functions as our “battery” thanks to net metering), but we are generating all the electricity needed to pow-

er, heat and cool our office building. We even have enough electricity from the solar panels to power our four electric cars and still not buy any net electricity from Xcel Energy.

Making the switch to allelectric at home is still in our future, because — like you, I suspect — we prefer gas cooking, gas grilling, and using our gas fireplace.

If, however, we can get over those preferences, it is possible now to heat our homes and our domestic hot water with heat pump appliances, and to cook our food with electric or induction cooktops and ovens. Electric grilling is also available, although not as attractive from a taste standpoint to most of us.

I’m Thinking I Have Purchased My Last Car—Here’s Why

We all know that a vehicle is “totaled” when the cost of repair is higher than its value after it has been repaired.

With an electric car such as my Tesla Model X, the math changes rather dramatically. Except for collision damage (which is less likely because of the car’s advanced driver assistance features), it’s hard to imagine a repair that would not be worth making.

The typical car with an internal combustion engine, on the other hand, is often “totaled,” because a new motor or new transmission, like many other drivetrain related repairs, can easily cost more than the Blue Book value of the car. Not so with any all-electric car such as my Tesla.

Only 3% of the metal in my Tesla is steel — the body and frame are aluminum — so rust is not an issue. The two electric motors, which are not prone to failure anyway, could be changed in 15 minutes. There is no transmission. In fact there are reportedly fewer than 50 moving parts in the entire car.

The battery, which barely degrades at all, can be changed in 15 minutes, but, like the motors, is warranted for 8 years, unlimited miles. For me, that equates to a 250,000-mile warranty. If, say, the battery needs replacing 10 years from now, the cost will probably be $5,000 or less by then — well worth the cost.

As you have probably heard, the operating system of the car is regularly updated “over the air” for free. The car has many features and functions today that it didn’t have when it was built in 2017, and it will have even more features in 2047, when I turn 100.

So, whereas one can speculate on the lifespan of a traditional gas-powered car with a steel body, you really can’t speculate on the life expectancy of a Tesla.

I think I need to put the car in my will, since it quite possibly will outlive me.

and 30.7 percent passing science.

On the English test, Jeffco boasted a higher percentage of passing students than surrounding districts Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Denver Public Schools and Cherry Creek Public Schools did.

Jeffco had a lower percentage than Douglas County School District and Littleton Public Schools.

On the math and science tests, the district weighed in above Adams County and Denver County, but had a lower percentage than Cherry Creek, Douglas County and Littleton.

The district’s scores varied slightly from its 2018 scores. In English, Jeffco saw a 0.1 percent increase in the number of passing students as compared to the previous year.

For math, that number was a 1.3 percent decrease, with 73 schools seeing a smaller percentage of students pass the test than passed last year.

For science, those numbers were a 1.8 percent decrease across 72 schools.

In all three subjects, Dennison Elementary in Lakewood boasted the highest percentage of passing students for the entire district, with 87 percent passing English, 85.9 percent passing math and 91 percent passing science.

Kullerstrand Elementary, Stott Elementary, Adams Elementary, Kendallvue Elementary, Peak Expeditionary and Rocky Mountain Academy of

Evergreen all saw the highest rates of improvement, with more than 15 percent increase in at least one subject.

Jeffco school’s Chief Academic Officer Matt Flores highlighted additional groups that surpassed state averages, including English as a Second Language (ESL) students and special education students.

He suggested one reason for the success was the support systems Jeffco has put in place, including how the district works to assist special education students in studying alongside their peers, in the same classroom, as opposed to in a separate classroom.

In addition to the above groups, fourth graders saw improvement across the board in Jeffco, in part because the district chose to focus on improving achievement in the fourth grade as one goal for the 2018-2019 school year. From 2017 to 2018, Jeffco had seen a decrease in the number of fourth grade students who passed CMAS, which was one reason for the heightened focus.

“We are going to continue to increase our supports for teacher planning, and ensure we have a balance between student opportunities for application, and tests and quizzes,” Flores said.

For parents and those who want to know more about the district or a specific student’s performance, it’s important to consider a CMAS score as “one data point of hundreds,” he said. “The best way to learn about a student’s academic progress is to have conversations with a teacher or principal.”

Soil sample shows potential plutonium hotspot in Jefferson Parkway path Soil may have five times more contamination than expected

When the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) and other groups launched a soil study this May, with the goal of testing the Rocky Flats area for excess nuclear waste that could be stirred up during construction of the Jefferson Parkway, groups were “not expecting any surprises,” said Roy Laws, an environmental engineer with Jefferson County Public Health, “but you don’t know until you get the samples.”

“No surprises” would would have meant that each sample taken by consulting firm Engineering Analytics would contain no more than 50 picocuries per gram, or pCi/g, of plutonium. This number was the standard set after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and FBI raided and shut down the Rocky Flats facility in 1989 to ensure contamination was disposed of.

Critics of the Jefferson Parkway, a toll road that is slated to partially run along the eastern edge of the

Rocky Flats buffer site, say its construction could stir up buried contaminants, causing harm to anyone who inhales the dust.

The JPPHA helped launched the study to address these concerns and confirm the parkway would not put nearby individuals at risk. But on Aug. 16, JPPHA Executive Director Bill Ray alerted the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) that one sample had registered 264 pCi/g, or five times the cleanup standard, according to a community letter from the CDPHE. The sample was taken from the west side of Indiana Street, 1.3 miles north of 96th Avenue and just south of the Great Western Reservoir.

A second test run on a different portion of the same gram of soil — the first tested just a portion of the sample — showed only 1.5 pCi/g, said CDPHE Environmental Protection Specialist Lindsay Masters.

Analyzers are now completing the study to help JPPHA and CDPHE determine what the elevated levels mean for area risk, with the authority planning to “follow (the CDPHE’s) lead on next steps,” Ray said. “Public safety is the number one priority for the Jefferson Parkway.”

Delays aplenty as Jefferson Parkway debate continues Toll road near construction but faces obstacles before private partner is chosen

T

he Jefferson Parkway is no stranger to delays and setbacks, having been part of a Denver-metro beltway vision that originated in the 1960s.

Construction of the final segment — a toll road intended to close the gap between state highways 93 and 128 known as the Jefferson Parkway — is finally on the horizon.

But nearing the fall of 2019, two issues must be resolved before the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) can proceed forward: Broomfield, one of the three partners behind the parkway, may pull out. And a soil sample taken from the proposed right of way near Rocky Flats has revealed there may be too much contamination in the ground to construct a highway.

“Given that this is a complex project more than 50 years in the making, it is not surprising that parts of the puzzle have moved over time, creating dialogue and sometimes delay,” said Bill Ray, executive director of the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA).

These delays, and the ones that have come before them, reflect the ongoing community conversations revolving around the perceived benefits and drawbacks of the road.

Supporters advocate for the parkway because they feel it is an infrastructure project necessary in a time when public funds for transportation are little to none. Advocates say the parkway will promote economic growth in the communities on its proposed route.

Opposers fear the parkway’s negative environmental side effects, such as potential public health risks posed by the project’s proximity to Rocky Flats. Some claim that construction will stir up dirt contaminated with plutonium at the site, which has been shown to cause cancer.

The Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation continues to advocate for the completion of the Jefferson Parkway, said Leigh Seeger, Jeffco EDC’s vice president of economic development.

“As an organization that focuses on the retention, expansion and attraction of primary employers, we know how critical an efficient and accessible regional transportation system is for the business community,” Seeger said.

“The current transportation congestion along this corridor is becoming increasingly dangerous, negatively impacting quality of life and jeopardizing the region’s economic vitality.”

With Broomfield’s decision tentatively scheduled for September, those who will be affected by the parkway continue to weigh the pros and cons the road will have in their everyday lives.

“While it (the Jefferson Parkway) will not really have an impact on our business, we expect that it will be of great benefit to our employees,” said Tom Aniello, VP of marketing for Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd., “as it will make commuting to and from work much easier.”

Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd. is a subsidiary of the namesake Swiss company that manages sales and service of Pilatus business jets and turboprops. At its Broomfield location at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport

(RMMA), Pilatus employs about 110 people, Aniello said.

He added that the high cost of housing in the northwest Denver/Boulder corridor has caused many of Pilatus’ employees to have to commute long distances to work.

“Anything that can be done to make their commute easier will help our recruiting and retention efforts,” Aniello said.

To the southwest of the airport, the Woman Creek Reservoir sits adjacent to the proposed parkway’s path, just west of Standley Lake. The reservoir ensures runoff from the Rocky Flats site does not enter Standley Lake, storing the water until it can be tested for contamination and confirmed clean.

Tamara Moon of the Woman Creek Reservoir Authority (WCRA) said because the site is not intended for visitors, and the highway will not impact the function of the reservoir, the authority is neutral on the parkway itself.

However, Moon and the WCRA believe the parkway’s construction could pose a safety threat because of its route along the edge of the Rocky Flats buffer zone, where plutonium, a type of nuclear waste, has contaminated the soil.

To evaluate the project’s safety risk, the JPPHA has helped oversee a soil test that took hundreds of samples from the soil in the parkway right of way. Some samples have yet to be analyzed, but on Aug. 16, Ray reported to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) that one sample showed more than five times the amount of plutonium deemed safe by authorities — 264 pCi/g instead of 50.

The sample was tested a second time and showed 1.5 pCi/g.

Analyzers are now running more tests to determine which result is more accurate, with Ray saying the JPPHA “will follow (CDPHE’s) lead on next steps.”

However, for those who oppose the parkway for safety reasons, the sample represents one of several indicators that the project could cause health problems for the community members living near the road — and, Moon said, for everyone else.

“Some of us on the WCRA are also active with the Rocky Flats Stewardship Council because (nuclear waste) is a global issue,” she said.

“We’re going to keep our eyes and ears open (to) make sure the process is done in a safe way.”

Weekday traffic starts to build near the 4 p.m. hour on Highway 93 near West 82nd Avenue, which is the Leyden Rock exit. This intersection is just north of where the parkway will end at its southwest point.

Trail stewardship, bikes and community celebrated Annual Golden Giddyup takes place Sept. 15

Across its entire trail network, Jefferson County Open Space attracts about seven million people annually.

This can take a toll on the trails, said Jeff Watrobka, executive director of the Golden Giddyup.

“Giving back to our trails is something everyone — not just mountain bikers — can get into,” Watrobka said.

So, to celebrate trail stewardship, mountain bikes and outdoor recreation and community, the annual Golden Giddyup race/ride and expo takes place on Sept. 15.

The Golden Giddyup Trails Team got its start in 2014. Following the September 2013 floods, a small group of volunteers got together to figure out a way to reopen Apex Park’s trails. Apex Park is located in Golden with trailheads off Highway 93 and Lookout Mountain Road. The floods forced the entire park to close — all 700 acres, including its nearly 10 miles of trails.

Since then, the Golden Giddyup Trails Team formally organized, formed a partnership with Jefferson

15. The ride/race will be followed by a free community event with live music, vendors and family friendly activities in Lion’s Park. To date, the Golden Giddyup Trails Team can boast more than 11,450 volunteer

The is the fourth year for the Golden Giddyup ride/race and expo.

“The event started because of bikes and the partnership with Jefferson County Open Space,” Watrobka said, “but it continues because of the community it creates.”

Golden resident Jesse Swift will be racing the Giddyup for the fourth time. Swift has been a competitive mountain biker since the mid-1990s and during his days as a pro, he would have to travel to various locations in Colorado, as well as out-of-state, to compete.

But “everyone in the Front Range has always known how great the trails are in Jefferson County,” Swift said.

“It’s great to have a race on the trails we use for training.”

Swift still competes and serves as an assistant coach for the Golden High School Mountain Bike Team. The youths volunteer with the Golden Giddyup Trails Team to do trail work at least twice during the summer, Swift

said.

“It helps the students become responsible to their community,” Swift said, and it “gets them involved with the trails they really care about.”

With all its components — trail stewardship and the annual race and celebratory event — the Golden Giddyup is starting a new chapter for the mountain biking community in Golden and Jefferson County, Swift said.

Golden resident Susan Weiler agreed.

“So many of us love the trails in Golden,” she said. And “the Giddyup provides a way for any of us to go out and make a difference.”

Weiler has ridden in the Golden Giddyup twice and has volunteered at the event twice. She is planning on volunteering again this year.

The Golden Giddyup “is a one-ofa-kind race for the Front Range,” Weiler said. But “at the heart of it, (the event) is a celebration of the trail teams’ accomplishments. To me, that’s what it’s all about.”

Registration to race or ride in the Golden Giddyup closes at midnight on Sept. 4. It takes place on Sept. 15.

There are three courses to choose from, which vary by length: the Classic Course, which costs $120 for adults and $50 for juniors; the Chimpex Course, which costs $95 for adults and $30 for juniors; and the Lite Course, which costs $80 for adults and $30 for juniors.

All courses begin and end at Lions Park, 1300 10th St., in Golden.

Racers will be grouped, and start times will be in waves. The first wave of racers will start at 8 a.m.

Timing chip and race plate pick-up takes place from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 14 at New Terrain Brewing Company, 16401 Table Mountain Parkway in Golden.

The Giddyup Get Down is a familyfriendly community event put on by Yeti Cycles that takes place during race day to celebrate trail work, stewardship, bikes and cycling and community partnerships.

The event gets going at about noon, and will feature live bluegrass music by Rapidgrass, Heavy Diamond Ring and the Golden Giddyup House Jam organized by Mark Morris; family-friendly activities provided by Avid4Adventure, as well as face painting and bike decorating and bounce houses; bike and outdoor industry vendors; and food vendors, including breakfast and ice cream. Nonalcoholic beverages will be available, and those age 21 and over can sample whiskey from LAWS Whiskey House and enjoy New Terrain Brewing’s GiddyHop special brew. Proceeds from the sales of the GiddyHop go back to the trails.

The Giddyup Get Down is free and the entire community is invited. It takes place at Lions Park.

Five things to know for the Arvada Harvest Festival Thousands to come together for 94th annual event

Arvada has a western weekend in store as the town prepares for the 94th annual Arvada Harvest Festival and Parade, which will take place in Olde Town Arvada on Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

The nearly-century-old tradition will have a western theme this year and will begin at 5 p.m. Friday night, wrapping up with a family movie at McIlvoy Park on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Vendors, parade entrants, those competing in festival contests and individuals interested in attending should regularly check both pages for new information and changes.

Additionally, here are five things for Arvadans to keep in mind as the yearly tradition approaches:

Parade location Because of ongoing construction, the parade will start at a different location this year with the festivities beginning at Allison Street and Ralston Road.

Parade entrants will receive their number in the lineup by email no later than Aug. 30.

Before the parade As per tradition, community members are invited to decorate the parade route with sidewalk chalk prior to the parade, which begins at 9 a.m. Before the parade, individuals can pick up chalk from the announcer’s tables, which will be stationed along the parade route.

Become a volunteer The festival is still seeking volunteers to assist with a number of tasks, including checking in vendors and parade entrants, driving golf cart shuttles and emptying on-site trash bins. Volunteers can sign up for shifts on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and will receive a t-shirt the day of their shift at the information booth, located at Grandview Avenue and Upham Street.

Prospective volunteers can sign up for a shift online under the Volunteers tab. The festival will accept volunteer applications through Sept. 4.

The spelling bee competition The festival’s annual spelling bee will return this year, with an entry form available on the festival website homepage.

Want to be a mermaid? Fin, have it your way

I

just heard about something called “mermaiding.”

It’s been around for a while, but I do my best to stay out of touch, partly because some of these things come and go almost overnight.

The first professional mermaids appeared around 2004.

Nonprofessional mermaids swim in local pools, lakes, river, and oceans.

Some don’t even swim. They just pose.

I watched a video that described the appeal of mermaiding. It didn’t sound any different than swimming without a tail.

Speaking of tails, you can order them online, and they come in all sizes and colors. Matching tops can be purchased.

They are mostly marketed for girls, young women, and women. Some are marketed for boys.

There are high-end prosthetic tails that cost thousands.

I grew up with crayons. Later I was given a bicycle. After that, I was handed a baseball glove.

Johns was a shapely woman with a distinctive, husky voice. Modern audiences have forgotten about her.

But not me.

A married doctor goes on a fishing trip, and catches Miranda, who pulls the doctor into the water, and keeps him in her underwater home until he agrees to show her around London.

Spoiler: The final scene shows Miranda on a rock, holding a merbaby.

Jennifer frequently attends yoga classes. Without a goat. She tells me stories about some of the other students.

When companies choose to invest in the continuous learning of their people, through both formal and informal education, they will also experience greater engagement, which in turn, creates greater productivity.

There is a lot of wisdom to be found in Dr. Denis Waitley’s amazingly profound words, “Never become so much of an expert that you stop gaining expertise. View life as a continuous

learning experience.” Just when we think we have mastered something, that something changes, technology changes, and we are no longer seen as the expert. Just ask anyone who is forced to listen to us tell them how we “used to do” something when we were their age. It used to be we could have comfort knowing that we were experts in something 10 years or more ago, then it was five years ago, and then maybe two years ago. Now, unless we keep up with our own continuous improvement, six months ago no longer qualifies us as experts.

I acknowledge that I am a dullard. I don’t need a tail, or a goat, and I don’t need to immerse like a tea bag.

I’m not sure what I would do if I came home and found Jennifer in the tub wearing a tail.

I tried to find some good mermaid jokes, but there aren’t any. The punch line of one of them is “algebra.” You can probably figure it out for yourself.

In 1984, Ron Howard directed “Splash.” It stars Tom Hanks, who falls in love with a mermaid played by Daryl Hannah. He names her “Madison” after Madison Avenue.

Ironically, Hannah had been swimming with her legs bound together

since she was a little girl, after reading Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid.”

(Disney’s film “Ariel” was based on Anderson’s story.)

He is survived by his parents Norman and Jeanette Neuhalfen of Keenesburg, CO and siblings Larie Bratcher (Terry) of Las Vegas, NV; Michelle Greenwald (Greg) of Westminster, CO; Teri Spinuzzi (Bill) of Broomfield, CO; Doug Neuhalfen of Arvada, CO; Jon Neuhalfen of Johnstown, CO; Dennis Neuhalfen (Kris) of Loveland, CO; Mike Neuhalfen of Limon, CO; and Jeff Neuhalfen (Ronnie) of Denver, CO. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Kevin will also be sadly missed by the incredible caregivers, medical staff, administrative staff and Sunada Learning Center (day programming) staff at the Wheat Ridge Regional Center (WRRC) who became family to him.

Kevin grew up in Arvada and his early school years were spent at Fletcher Miller in Lakewood, CO and Margaret Walters in Arvada, CO. Over the years Kevin participated in swim-

ming and wheelchair events sponsored by Special Olympics. He was an avid bowler at the original Arvada Lanes.

We will celebrate Kevin’s life on Friday, September 6, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church (969 Ulysses St, Golden, CO) beginning with a Rosary at 9:30am followed by Mass from 10:00am to 11:00am. A reception will follow Mass in the Education Center at the Church. After the reception, at approximately 1:15pm, a vehicle procession from the Church to Fort Logan National Cemetery (4400 W. Kenyon Ave. Denver, CO) will take place arriving at staging area ‘B’ for a 2:30pm burial ceremony. Kevin’s parents will eventually join him in his resting place since his Dad is a Veteran of the Korean War. Mary Carolyn Lawson, age 85, passed away August 16, 2019. She was born June 27, 1934 in Denver, Colorado to Wes and Mary Hamilton and joyfully married her true love, Richard Lee Lawson, in October of 1952 who has since preceded her in death in 1987.

Mary graduated from Lakewood High School in 1952. She was a devoted wife and mother and was deeply loved by her family. She especially enjoyed her role as Grandma/Poppy/Pa. Mary was witty and had a contagious sense of humor. She was humble and kind, always making people around her feel appreciated and valued. She loved to travel, bake pumpkin bread, crochet, read and hike. She loved sharing “HIS PLACE” mountain house in Dillon with friends and family so they could enjoy the beauty of Colorado. Her generosity was abundant.

Mary loved God and serving. She was a missionary in China, volunteered with Samaritans Purse; cleaning up after Katrina and feeding the homeless in Denver. Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 - “And be

kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”

Mary will be greatly missed by her four children and their spouses, Sherri and Lennie Moore, Carol and Wayne Dennis, Steve and Chrisann Lawson and Maryann and Eric Peratt; grandchildren, Heather (Bret), Carrie (Steve), Beth (Bryan), Jared (Taniel), Brandon (Charissa), Kaylor (Marie), Tanner, Cade, Ambria; plus 11 great grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her brother, Bill (Bonnie) Hamilton and sister, Jeanne (Bob) Henderson. Her granddaughter, Bridgett Lawson and grandson, Brad Moore, proceeded her in death. All of whom she loved and touched deeply.

We will all cherish every moment we were able to spend with her.

37th annual food and music fest will take over Civic Center Park for Labor Day weekend

Taste of Colorado returns to Civic Center Park in downtown Denver for another Labor Day weekend, bringing with it 48 different food trucks and vendors and thousands of hungry mouths.

The annual food festival begins Aug. 31 and finishes Sept. 2 The festival is free to enter and open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, and from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m on Sept. 2. This will be the 37th annual A Taste of Colorado festival.

More than 500,000 people turned out throughout the long weekend last year. It is the largest food festival with free admission in the state.

In addition to the 48 food vendors will be almost 200 retail vendors, a Kids Zone with arts, crafts and a children’s entertainment stage.

The event began in 1983 to bring people together through food and music. Now, the festival is bigger than ever. USA Today ranked A Taste of Colorado No. 4 on its 2019 list of Best General Food Festivals.

KC and the Sunshine Band will headline the festival’s first night Aug. 31, along with Kool and The Gang and Grand Funk Railroad.

Then Sept. 1 will be a day for country fans with Dwight Yoakam and Remus Tucker headlining. Monday will have a host of contemporary music from Toad the Wet Sprocket, American Idiot, Scott Stapp Voice of Creed and more. A total of 32 live bands and artists will perform.

This year’s festival will have a larger main stage.

Cuisines at A Taste of Colorado range in style and flavors, including specialty foods inspired from Mexico, Jamaica, New Orleans and some familiar Colorado signatures.

Reggae fusion tacos, Marcia and Joe’s Kitchen This Jamaican specialty food truck will be serving its famous reggae fusion tacos at A Taste of Colorado — a Jamaican take on the Mexican staple. A choice of jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry shrimp, jerk pork, carne asada or al pastor is served on a flour or corn tortilla.

The tacos come in three and are served with a side of cabbage to garnish.

Marcia and Joe’s Kitchen is located in Steamboat Springs and serves braised oxtail, curry goat and chicken, and jerk pork and chicken.

Kalahari chicken wings, A Taste of Soweto Mpho MaPoulo, of Colorado Springs, wants to introduce the taste of his home country South Africa to Americans with his start-up food business A Taste of Soweto. MaPoulo and his wife, Ocean, hope to have their own food truck come October. Ocean is the chef who makes the specialty stews and kota chicken and rice bowls — “kota” refers to the quarter loaf of bread used as a bowl, traditionally.

The MaPoulos offer it over rice as well.

A Taste of Soweto only has five menu items, but, Mpho MaPoulo said, they have adapted over the months to fuse South African tastes with American ones.

One of the five items A Taste of Soweto will be serving up is Kalahari chicken wings — a South African twist on the Buffalo pub classic. The wings are tossed in a coriander-based Kalahari sauce, named after the Kalahari Desert in South Africa.

This year’s CRUSH runs all over RiNo from Monday, Sept. 2 through Sunday, Sept. 8.

Sharing stories at Vail Film Festival Four independent films to keep an eye out for

There’s something counterintuitive about being in a place as gorgeous as Vail in the late summer and spending most of it inside dark rooms. But the films I watched over the weekend of Aug. 15-18 as part of the 16th annual Vail Film Festival revealed a different kind of beauty. That special beauty that comes with sharing your story with other people.

There are large, celebrity-speckled festivals like Telluride, Sundance and Cannes that are launching grounds for award campaigns and best-of lists, but Vail prioritizes intimacy and personality. Most screenings don’t have more than 50 people in the audience, and the filmmakers are almost all on hand afterward to discuss their project and how it can be supported.

The festival also focuses on women filmmakers, which is always encouraging to see in an industry that has been so male-dominated for decades.

Some of the best moments of the festival are when the minds behind the movies offer advice and wisdom to those looking to get tell their own stories.

said Kerry David, director of “Breaking Their Silence,” during a panel discussion. “It’s awesome because you don’t know what you don’t know, and its how you learn tenacity and passion are what gets films made.”

In a little over two days, I was able to check out nine movies - “Banana

Split,” “Being Frank,” “Bring Me an Avocado,” “Burning Kentucky,” “Don’t Be Nice,” “Hiro’s Table,” “Once Upon a River,” “Stalag Luft III” and “Standing Up, Falling Down” - and there was nary a dud among them. All are worth your time and support, and I selected four from new filmmakers to highlight.

“Bring Me an Avocado” Grief is a strange and unpredictable thing that every person experiences differently. For the family and friends at the center of writer/director Maria Mealla’s “Bring Me an Avocado,” grief is a special kind of hell when a violent incident leads to a mother, wife and friend being in a coma. Bernardo Peña gives a slyly funny performance as a man trying to hold it together, and Candace Roberts is utterly relatable in her performance as family friend, Jada. Like real life, it leaves plenty unanswered, but there’s hope for the future.

Mealla began working on the film when her mother was diagnosed with dementia and provided her with a creative outlet to explore the issues this brought up.

“It’s more an exploration of death and how we deal with it before we have to deal with it,” she explained.

“Burning Kentucky” Addiction, whether it’s to drugs (prescriptions or otherwise), alcohol or any other behaviors, doesn’t simply affect the person dealing with the disease. Set in writer/director Bethany Brooke Anderson’s home state, “Burning Kentucky” is a searing examination of addiction, family bonds and the limits of forgiveness, which has echoes of Shakespeare and Faulkner. In her first role, Emilie Dhir is all quiet strength and frayed nerves as Aria, the beating heart of the film.

“Addiction is the great equalizer,

and everyone has or knows someone who has struggled with it,” Anderson said in a post-screening Q&A. “The ending changed maybe 20 times. The story could change by the characters’ cores had to remain intact.”

“Hiro’s Table” The fact that as soon as director Lynn Hamrick’s documentary “Hiro’s Table” ended, I had an immediate craving for sushi should be proof enough that the film makes every dish master chef Hiroji Obayashi prepares look vibrant and delicious. But what caught me off guard was how human and wise the movie ends up being.

Shot over a 16-year span, the film follows the famous Los Angeles chef and his wife Yasuyo as they open the Hirozen Gourmet restaurant, which goes from a little hole in the wall joint to one of the most beloved restaurants in the city.

There’s a kinetic energy to Hamrick’s filmmaking and also a deep warmth for her subject. As the man himself says in the film, “Food is not cooking. Food is heart.” So is this movie.

“Once Upon a River” Haroula Rose’s feature directorial debut, “Once Upon a River,” is so assured that you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the work of someone who has sat in the chair for numerous films. It’s even more astounding when you consider that the movie is lead actor Kenadi Delacerna’s first feature as well.

Based on the novel by Bonnie Jo Campbell, Delacerna gives a hypnotic and riveting performance as Margo Crane, a young woman in the late 1970s Michigan grappling with who she is and where she fits in a world that doesn’t seem to care. If you’ve ever felt hopelessly at odds with everyone just because of who you are, you’ll see yourself in the film.

“I loved how free she (Margo) is in the story,” Delacerna said. “She finds this great heart within herself.”

‘I’m going to fully recover’: Local author writes, publishes husband’s story Book highlights the power of positivity

Brenda Bott didn’t always plan on writing a “real book,” she said.

Originally, the Arvada author hoped to write a book just for friends and family that would detail her and her husband Glenn’s story after he was nearly killed in a cycling crash.

However, after Bott’s editor convinced her to broaden the book’s reach, Bott’s first book, The Cocoon Chronicles, hit the shelves this summer with a launch party on Aug. 23 and is now being sold by Barnes & Noble, Target and Amazon.

The book draws from Bott’s writings directly after her husband’s bike crash with an SUV, which occurred in June 2004 and left him with a serious brain injury.

Brenda Bott was told he would likely not survive. However, she was confident he’d pull through from the first time she saw him after the accident, she said.

“I held his hand and said, `if you want to stay, I know you can do it,’” she said. “He squeezed me hand and from that point I knew: `he’s going to be OK.’” Weeks after the crash, Glenn Bott

As for the book’s main message, the story has the same theme as each of Glenn Bott’s speeches: a positive spirit can change anything, the couple said, adding that they learned this lesson from a former mentor.

“The takeaway has been that what you focus on expands,” he said.

Brenda Bott agreed.

“Glenn wasn’t supposed to live through this, but he’s got such a powerful mind and spirit,” she said. “The message of the book is: don’t listen to prognoses or statistics. It’s an inspirational love story.”

Mines students to compete in Solar Decathlon AFRICA Competition takes place in Morocco in September

It’s not an African safari, but Colorado School of Mines students are participating in quite an adventure in Morocco this September.

A group from Mines is competing in Solar Decathlon AFRICA — an international collegiate competition that challenges student teams to design, build and operate a full-sized, solarpowered home in a five-week time period.

This “is a large event for our school,” said Katie Schneider, a graduate student studying mechanical engineering. “We are excited to represent Colorado as one of only three U.S. teams competing in this competition.”

Mines was accepted to compete in the Solar Decathlon AFRICA in March 2018, and since, about 20-to-30 Mines students have been working on the planning and design of the home.

They are partnering with about 20 students from two different universities in Morocco.

Six of the Mines students traveled to Morocco near the end of August to begin construction of the home. They have three weeks to build it, prior to the two weeks of competition on Sept.

13-27.

“I have loved getting to know the people we work with,” said Lucy Davis, a senior studying civil engineering at Mines. She added Mines students have spent hours in the past year-and-a-half video chatting with each other and their partners in Morocco. “To me, learning about the completely different, but surprisingly similar, lives that each of us lead has been the most incredible part.”

The team name is InterHouse and they are competing against 19 other teams made up of university students from around the world. Judging will be in 10 separate events — assessing the home’s architecture, engineering and construction, market appeal, social awareness, appliances, livability, sustainability, health and comfort, energy balance and innovation.

This year is the first for Africa to put on a solar decathlon, and it is the first time for Mines students to compete in any solar decathlon. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon got its start in 2002 and has taken place biennially in various U.S. cities. It took place in Denver in 2017.

“The tiny home helped train us for this one,” Schneider said of the Solar Decathlon AFRICA. Schneider has been involved with the tiny home since her freshman year at Mines.

The house the Mines students and their Moroccan partners are building will be about 1,000 square feet with two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living space. It will feature Moroccan-style architecture, U-shaped with a courtyard.

It will be net zero and powered by solar energy — using second-life batteries from a Nissan Leaf, an electric car, to build the home’s battery unit to store its solar power. This, and the home’s custom HVAC system, have been shipped to Morocco. Other build-

It has been “quite the undertaking,” but rewarding, Schneider said.

“This project is giving students a chance to develop leadership and problem-solving skills that the classroom can’t teach you,” Davis added.

“There’s no better learning opportunity than actually getting to use what you learn in school on your own.”

Banana Mash Bananas are a staple. Children have difficulty peeling though. Show them how gorillas peel bananas. Instead of peeling from the stem, peel it from the opposite end by making a small cut on that end using the fingernail or table knife.

Mash one peeled banana, one teaspoon honey, one teaspoon nut butter, if desired on a flat plate. Use a table fork with supervision. Spread on a piece of fruit or toast.

Split Banana You’ll need one peeled banana, strawberry or vanilla yogurt, nutritious cereal, sliced grapes, strawberries or other berries. Use a table knife to cut peeled banana lengthwise.

Spoon desired amount of yogurt over the banana and sprinkle cereal on top and add pieces of fruit.

You can keep after school snack recipes next to the refrigerator and help children get in the habit of checking out the list when they are hungry.

Children can go through the list before going grocery shopping with you.

A Precious Child assists children and families facing difficult life challenges such as abuse and neglect, crisis situations and poverty. We work with more than 440 Agency Partners throughout eight Denver Metro counties including Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Weld to identify children and families in the most need of our services.

Brighton softball rallies late to edge Ralston Valley

ARVADA — Brighton senior Angel Mollel celebrating at second base after her RBI double signaled the final swing of momentum in a wild final few innings on the softball field Thursday, Aug. 22.

Mollel’s double drove in senior Sarah Tiffany in the top of the seventh inning to tie things up 6-6 on Ralston Valley’s home field. A deep fly ball by senior Alexia Apodaca moments later scored Mollel from third base for the eventual game-winning run in a 7-6 win for the Bulldogs (3-0 record).

“A win like this early in the season is huge. To go through a little adversity there in the middle, but see the bats wake-up in the seventh inning,” Brighton coach Marty Stricklett said.

“To watch Angel jump up and down at second base was pure joy for herself and teammates. That’s what this is about. Kids having fun and playing the game right.”

Mollel reached base on all four atbats, scoring three times. Her double was the lone hit Ralston Valley sophomore Ashley West gave up during her four innings on the mound.

“I was kind of expecting a changeup,” Mollel said. “I just timed it.”

Brighton led for most of the game until the Mustangs (0-2) put on four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie things up 5-5. West ripped an inside-the-park, three-run home run to highlight the inning.

Ralston Valley grabbed a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI triple by junior Jaiden Geist.

However, Brighton’s two-run top of the seventh inning gave the lead back to the Bulldogs and senior pitcher Tori Haug retired the Mustangs in

order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

“We have a lot of things to work on,” Ralston Valley coach Wendy Davies said. “I did tell them we had some good hits, but we needed more timely hits. We needed to execute.”

A glaring issue Ralston Valley had came on the defensive side. The Mustangs committed seven errors in the loss. West and Ralston Valley starting pitcher Maya Bachman combined to give up just five hits, but the errors were costly.

“Probably a few defensive changes, but it’s a good group of girls,” Davies said after the Mustangs’ second game of the season. “They work hard, but as far as coaching goes, I’ve got some things to look at and change to make us better.”

It didn’t help Ralston Valley that it lost Class 5A Jeffco League first-team all-conference selection and starting shortstop Jordan West — Ashley’s older sister — before the season even started.

“That is a huge loss,” Davies said of losing starting Jordan due to knee surgery she had over the off-season.

“She is an amazing kid. By far the best leader that we have vocally and physically. It was a horrible loss for us.”

Jordan batted .365 with 24 RBIs and six home runs during her sophomore campaign. Davies said she is still a tremendous leader in the dugout despite not being able to take the field this fall while recovering from surgery.

“I feel super confident with her (Jordan) behind me, but we just have to move on and come together as a team,” Ashley said of playing without her sister on the field. “We need to play for her and play for ourselves.”

leave the game Thursday with an injury to her non-throwing shoulder.

Ashley struggled with her control at times last season during her 56 innings pitched, but has been solid in the circle for the Mustangs through two games.

“I’ve been proud of her (Ashley).

Even over the summer she struggled I think. We talked at the beginning of the year,” Davies said. “She is an amazing athlete at 6-foot-2 on the mound. Everyone, including her, thinks she should be striking every-

one out and she has to get out of the mindset. She just needs to throw strikes and get ahead of the batters.

She has been amazing so far.”

Ralston Valley and Brighton will actually see each other again just before regionals in early October.

“We are going to focus on the positive and we’ll see (Brighton) again in a couple of weeks,” Ashley said.

A 7:30 a.m. shotgun start for the second boys golf Jeffco League tournament Tuesday, Aug. 20, allow golfers to avoid temperatures the 90s at Deer Creek Golf Club.

The defending Class 5A Jeffco League medalist — Lakewood junior Ryan Liao — actually wasn’t at the second conference tournament of the season. Liao was in New Jersey playing in the KJ Choi Foundation Junior Championship.

Lakewood is primed to be in contention for high individual and team accolades this fall. Liao is back after placing fourth at state last season.

The Tigers finished second at state in the team standings, five shots behind Fossil Ridge.

Lakewood coach Alan Gonzales has guided the most constant boys golf program in Jeffco for the past several years. The Tigers placed second in the 5A state tournament in 2014, 2015 and 2018 to go along with a third-place finish in 2016.

Lakewood sophomore Max Lange won the first medalist title in the opening Jeffco League tournament Aug. 12 at Applewood Golf Course. Lange shot a round of 65 for a five-shot victory.

“My team has really stepped up their game. It relieves a lot of pressure

on my part,” Liao said. “Of course I want to go for the (5A Jeffco League individual medalist) again, but the main thing is the team.”

Ralston Valley and Valor Christian will likely be right on the Tigers’ heels in the race for the conference title that concludes with the final league tournament Sept. 17 at the Broadlands.

On the 4A side, Evergreen will be the favorite with senior Clayton Whitton leading the way for the Cougars.

Jake Dekoker and Jack Mitchell gives Evergreen not only a chance for another conference team title, but a chance to be in the mix for the 4A state title.

Conifer junior Dakota Dolph and Green Mountain sophomore Ollie Gibbons — both finished in the top-10 at the 4A state tournament last season — look to break into the top-10 in 2019.

The Colorado Classic bike race, a four-day racing event, aiming to be the premier U.S. pro racing event, looped through Golden on Saturday, Aug. 24, for the third of those stages, featuring a variety of iconic scenes, but a quite singular winner.

Chloe Dygert-Owen continued her domination of the competition, winning her third straight stage.

“Today was the biggest crowd and it means a lot,” she said during the post-race press conference. “Golden is an awesome town. Tons of cheering kept us going. The fans bring this racing to life.”
