Priest waits out injury to resume walk across country

For roughly six weeks, he walked along Kansas roads as a sore on his toe worsened from a pesky blister to a painful infection. Still, the former Episcopal priest who lives in Colorado kept going.

On Aug. 10 Peter Munson, still traveling by foot, passed into Colorado and continued until he reached Colorado Springs. The 61-year-old had walked roughly 2,100 miles by then, more than half as far as he planned to go. But the pain in his toe had grown to the point that wearing a shoe felt excruciating.

Finally, he called it quits. At least for the time being.

Munson, who’s walking from South Carolina to California to raise money for charity, canceled a planned Aug. 13 appearance in Castle Rock and paused his walking mission because of the foot injury, which required that he seek medical attention.

“Saturday it was causing me to limp,” he said on Tuesday, Aug. 12, before a doctor visit in his hometown of Arvada. “Taking this week off to see if I can get well.”

The former priest began his journey on March 4 in Charleston, South Carolina. He estimated then it would take 6 million steps to reach his final destination of San Francisco. He now believes, with 1,600 miles to go, the journey will take 7.5 million steps.

Munson hopes to raise money for each mile he walks to benefit four charities — The REMAR Children’s Home and School in El Salvador, the Denver-based Street Fraternity, Episcopal Relief and Development and lastly the Episcopal Church in Colorado. He’s raised approximately $4,300 to date.

Joe Kissell, a four-year member of Christ’s Episcopal Church in Castle Rock, where Munson’s appearance was scheduled, said he was eager to hear the traveling priest Munson speak.

“I’m kind of amazed,” he said of Munson’s mission. “I guess more than anything I’m just glad that there is someone like the former reverend here that’s so willing to do something like that, because that’s a tremendous effort.”

Munson said the idea for his crosscountry journey sparked more than 10 years ago.

“I actually heard a calling when I was finishing up a hike,” he said.

“It wasn’t audible words, but it was a really clear message about walking across the country, speaking and writing and raising money for people in need.”

Munson is an avid hiker who’s tackled most Colorado’s fourteeners. He felt prepared for the physical feat of walking across the U.S. But the timing

wasn’t right in 2008. Instead he spent three summers training by backpacking between Denver and Durango.

This year was right year for him, Munson said, so he quit his job, closing nearly three decades as a priest, and started walking.

“Part of the reason I’m walking is there’s a lot of people in the world who still walk to get water, go to school, to go in the field to work, who even walk sometimes great distances to go to a medical clinic,” he said.

His method of fundraising is meant to be in solidary with people who have no other means of traveling, he said. He blogs about his experiences, dubbed 6 Million Steps for Kids, at 6millionstepsforkids.org.

Despite being physically fit, Munson knew there would be challenges. In Tennessee he was nearly attacked by loose dogs, which he fended off using pepper spray. Near Pueblo, he walked through a lightning storm.

“There’s a lot of people in the world that have tougher odds from an early age,” he said. “I try to take in that perspective when my toe hurts or when I’m having a scary day.”

Father Brian Winter of Christ’s Episcopal Church said when church leadership learned Munson’s route passed through the area, they wanted him to share his story with people in Castle Rock.

Winter has also followed Munson’s progress on Facebook, first learning about the project at a clergy conven-

tion. When Munson passed through Missouri, Winter connected him with a local friend who found Munson a place to stay.

Munson said he was surprised by the hospitality in each of the nine states he’s walked through to date.

The trip has taken 160 days so far.

Munson ended nearly all by staying in churches or homes of local families who opened their doors to him. He’s needed to camp only four nights.

Winter wished Munson’s Castle Rock visit could be rescheduled.

There are life lessons parishioners could learn from his project, Winter said.

“If you’re passionate about something, follow that,” he said.

After his doctor visit, Munson wasn’t letting the troublesome blister, officially diagnosed as a pressure ulcer, dampen his spirits. He hoped to be back on the road by Aug. 19 with the help of antibiotics.

He planned to restart his walk in Boulder, where he’d expected to be by that date. He’ll spend several weeks walking through Colorado before continuing through Utah and Nevada before ending in California.

“A part of me doesn’t really believe I’m doing this,” he said. “It seems a little surreal to have walked 2,100 miles. Wow, really, how have I done this? But I try to remember the children and why I’m doing it and what I’m walking for.”

Bus routes change in response to G Line

RTD’s Aug. 25 service change includes adjustments that could affect day-to-day commuting for Arvada bus riders. The changes will better compliment service provided by the G Line, RTD’s senior service planner, David Menter said.

To avoid duplicating services provided by the G Line, Routes 31L and 51L will be discontinued, he said.

RTD said several routes have been

newly established or altered “to increase speed and efficiency” for Arvada users.

Arvada has worked closely with RTD to create these opportunities, including new Route 55, said City Communications Manager Ben Irwin.

“The city supports service changes that better align bus and rail services,” a statement from the city said. “Staff is hopeful that frequency of bus service on major roadways will increase and that Route 55 will prove to be a successful circulator service to con-

In May I got a call from a couple who were under contract with OpenDoor for an attractive price, but at a 7% commission and over $20,000 in fees. They were able to terminate and listed with me.

Above right is one of 3 charts in the report. The analysis is from Phoenix, where OpenDoor began buying homes in 2016. They didn’t come to Denver until 2018.

I’ve written before about companies which offer to buy your home “as is” for cash without you putting it on the market. The only reason they do it is that they can flip the property to a new buyer for a profit — profit that you gave up by doing business with them. The same is obviously true with iBuyers.

Morning celebration welcomes Thomson Tigers back to school Lively tradition ‘embraces a new chapter’

Beth and Matt House didn’t know everything to expect for their oldest daughter’s first day of kindergarten at Thomson Elementary School.

But as the couple stood in front of the school with their three children and more than 100 parents, teachers and students, one thing became clear: Thomson’s back-to-school traditions have a way of relieving first-day anxieties, they said.

“It embraces that it’s a new day and a new chapter,” Beth said. “It was nothing like this when we were kids.

It’s a lot bigger than we were expecting.”

The back-to-school festivities brought every student to the school’s front lawn, where they said goodbye to their parents, lined up with their new classmates and reunited with old friends.

“It’s exciting. You get to see kids you haven’t seen over the summer,” said fifth-grader William Wilber, who will complete his last year at Thomson this year before moving on to middle school.

The tradition has become something the students can look forward to, said Thomson parent Matthew Archuleta, whose first-grade daughter, Elena, “was very excited when she woke up this morning,” he said.

“It’s not like just dropping your kid off. This creates a sense of community,” he said.

As the students filed into their first classes, Archuleta joined several other parents in the library for the school’s First Day Family Tea, which gave parents more information about the school and how they can get involved.

The tradition provides a great help to parents who are brand new to the school because “they can network with parents who have done this before,” he said.

With the entire year ahead of them, the students listed a variety of things they’re looking forward to most: the friends, the teachers, the playground.

With so much to celebrate, most could agree with Wilber: “I like everything,” he said.

“I’m not sure which one to pick.”

Jeffco teachers to be paid back for 2010 pay freeze Final bargaining session yields results in JCEA-district negotiations

For many Jeffco teachers, the final bell on the first day of school didn’t quite signal the end of the day; rather, it signaled a shift to an impassioned discussion as teachers continued to negotiate with the district over the size of teacher raises.

After school on Aug. 14, members of the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) met with district representatives for their final bargaining session where, following months of disagreement on teacher compensation, the groups drafted a tentative agreement for their contract.

The compromise came after spring negotiations ended on an inconclusive note. While the support professionals union, JESPA, drafted an agreement on May 30 that included a 1.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA) to support their salaries, JCEA did not draft an agreement.

JCEA members have maintained a 1.5% COLA would not satisfy Jeffco teachers, many of whom struggle to afford Jeffco rents and some of whom feel they have yet to receive promised reparations after taking pay freezes in the 2010-2011 school year, said JCEA Bargaining Chair Christy Yacano. The freezes were part of a district effort

Negotiations were tabled until August, with both groups hoping to reach an agreement prior to the first 2019-2020 paychecks in September.

Upon returning in August, teachers held they would like to see a 3.5% COLA instead of the 1.5% offered to JESPA. The group also requested longevity payment for educators who took pay freezes and still work in the district today — some 2,577 individuals by the JCEA’s calculations and just under

3,000 by the district’s most recent estimate.

By compensating those who stuck out the pay freezes and giving them further incentive to stay in the district, Jeffco Public Schools would be “investing in our students’ futures,” Yacano said.

However, Chief Human Resources Officer David Bell said that because the district completely changed its salary schedule following the pay freeze, “about half of those folks make more now than they would have if we had just matured them on the prior salary schedule” — inciting a number of oppositional comments from those in the bargaining session audience.

Standing by his calculation, Bell questioned whether it would be more beneficial to adjust payment only for those who earn less today than they would if the pay freeze had not occurred. To advance each of those individuals a step on the salary schedule would cost the district just under $3 million, he said.

If the district were to advance all 3,000 or so pay freeze teachers, the cost would increase to more than $5 million, which the district cannot afford, he said.

“We are still waiting for dollars from the recession, dollars lost, to move back to the district,” he said. “We’re struggling with that as we go forward every day.”

But JCEA bargaining members continued to stress the importance of increasing pay for all such teachers,

regardless of their current salaries.

“We can’t deny the sacrifices that were made back when (pay was) frozen,” Yacano said.

At the end of the session, the two sides compromised on an annual increase for employees who took pay freezes, which will see about $3 million distributed between the 2,500 to 3,000 employees — with groups estimating each employee’s raise will be “higher than $600,” Yacano said.

The groups also agreed on a 2.5% COLA instead of a 1.5%.

Additionally, because of language in the district’s contract with JESPA, support professionals will receive a 2.5% COLA. The educators’ tentative agreement also paved the way for changes to the educator evaluation process, altered distribution of teacher sick days and lowered the maximum of students in an art, music or PE class from 32 to 30 students, among other changes.

The contract is expected to be ratified

by Aug. 21, according to the JCEA. While JCEA members celebrated the compromise, teachers like Wheat Ridge High social studies teacher Stephanie Rossi emphasized that she still sees room for eventual improvement.

“Members of JCEA are committed to advocating for a long-term funding fix across the state of Colorado,” Rossi said, “but Jeffco also needs to examine its priorities and invest in the hardworking professionals in our district that are dedicated to our students.”

New Hope House center will support 450 teen moms Grand opening to be held Sept. 5

It doesn’t take long for the moms served by Hope House — a nonprofit that supports teen moms in the Denver area — to start spreading the word.

Madison Sullivan, 21, heard about it from one former teen mom, and went on to tell others.

Several former Hope House women said recommending the place to other young mothers to help them through some of the struggles they face, seemed like a natural next-step.

“There’s just such a need for it. It’s great to have,” Sullivan said. “I’ve grown so much as a person since I joined that I don’t even know who I would be if I hadn’t joined.”

Starting Sept. 5, Hope House’s capacity will nearly double as its new resource center opens up at 6475 Benton St. While the old facility in Westminster allowed Hope House to serve about 250 moms per year, the new building will serve 450 moms and offer quadruple the amount of available childcare spots, said Founder and Executive Director Lisa Steven.

The new building includes childcare space, classroom space, a workout room, a laundry room, a dining room

and the “Mama Bear Cave” — named

by Hope House participants — where the moms can spend time with one another.

For 19-year-old Yvette Martinez Madera, who first came to the nonprofit in September 2018, she said it was just a matter of months before she was recommending the nonprofit to friends struggling to find housing and finish high school.

Jade Arledge, 22, likewise shared the news about Hope House with a number of other teen moms, including Sullivan.

Hope House has served young moms up to age 25 since its establishment in 2003. The nonprofit offers a residential program and a community program, which provides resources such as free childcare, hygienic supplies for children and GED, personal growth and financial classes.

“In the other building, we have no space for community — we do breakfasts on Thursdays for half an hour,” Steven said. “But in this building, we’ll have them sitting in that dining room three times a day, eating as a family and having food available. That will be my moment of, ‘look what God did.’”

‘Another step closer’ to self-sufficiency The six-year, $5 million building project has come together because of a number of entities, Steven said.

VOICES Views from an expert in the laughingstock market

I

could give a two-day seminar on the No. 2 pencil, but I couldn’t have an intelligent two-minute conversation about the stock market.

Those words — “stock market” — have intimidated me since the first time I heard them. I don’t remember when that was, but it might have been in an American history class.

Perhaps when I first heard about the Stock Market Crash of 1929. I still don’t understand why that happened.

I have the facts right in front of me: it lasted four days, it was the worst ever, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 25%, and it lost $30 billion in market value.

Now: What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average?

See what I mean? And it’s hopeless.

“Arbitrage,” “averaging down,” and “day trading” mean nothing to me.

The consolation is — or might be — that I know how to talk about abstract art with the best of them. Leftbrained people often are just as inept when it comes to a conversation about abstract art as I am when it comes to talking about Dow Jones.

I guess insiders call it “The Dow.” I can’t do that, because I’m on the outside.

I wondered if there was a man named Dow Jones who was responsible for all of this, and I discovered it was two men: one named Dow and one named Jones.

Then why isn’t it the “Dow & Jones Industrial Average”?

Charles Dow was a 19th-century Wall Street journal editor.

I have no plans to educate myself.

I am, primarily, right-brained, and there are some things QUIET that my mind resists.

DESPERATION The stock market is one of them.

I was reminded of this when I read “Dow closes higher after China blinks.”

Should I sigh with relief ? Gather with friends and celebrate? Order Chinese take-out?

Craig Marshall I have skipped past the business section Smith in the newspaper for decades. There are no pictures, just numbers, and a language foreign to me.

(I know how Wall Street got its name, by the way.)

Whenever they show the stock market in action in real life or films, it looks like total chaos, with men and women shouting and running around with little pieces of paper in their hands.

I cannot comprehend how and why stock market fluctuations impact my life.

You may be wondering if I own any stocks. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I am sure I would have invested in New Coke.

nce upon a time, in another lifetime, I helped my friend Matt coach a high school baseball team. And, at one point a little way into the season, we were in the middle of a game, and Matt called for a sacrifice bunt.

It was a good call at the time — it’s always a good call when it works — but, our player didn’t get his hands in the right position, and he popped the ball up. The pitcher caught it, whirled to first base, and threw out our baserunner. Double play, end of inning.

Weirdly, even though we’d only played a few games at that point, this was the fourth or fifth time that had happened to us. And, appropriately, Matt let his frustration show. He took his cap off, rubbed his head, kicked at the dirt a little and exclaimed, “Dammit! How many times is that gonna happen to us this year?”

The entire dugout was silent, as we absorbed what had just happened and the coach’s reaction. And then, quietly, out of nowhere, one of our catchers, a big, strong Hispanic kid named Mark, deadpanned in his best Pete Puma (of Looney Tunes fame) voice “Oh . . . tree or four.”

You think the dugout was silent

after the failed bunt? The entire field was dead silent, watching, waiting for Matt’s reaction. Had Matt HITTING reacted like most HOME high school teachers dealing with a smart aleck kid, it would have been just another frustrating moment in a long season.

Instead, three eternal seconds later, Matt dropped his hat, and doubled over. Laughing. The Michael Alcorn rest of the team quickly followed suit.

I have no idea if we won that particular game or not, but I do know that that moment sticks out as the moment we became a team. Chemistry is an unbelievably important — and completely unmeasurable — component of successful teams.

The team we had that summer had 4-15 talent, but Matt squeezed ten wins out of them. They played for each other, they played for us, and they had fun doing it. It was a great

We are perhaps the only state in the Union where we have some control over our tax system. Are you willing to give this up? An effort by the state is being made to pass Proposition CC, which will have the potential to permanently eliminate TABOR at the state level. An attempt is being made to avoid even mentioning any reference to TABOR in the blue book which we receive prior to all state ballots (a grey book for local issues). I don’t want to give up the little control I have over my state taxes, nor do I wish to be

The hard part is that there is no formula for chemistry — you can’t manufacture it, and you can’t command it. It happens all on its own, organically, or it doesn’t. And you sure know when it’s not there.

Ask the Colorado Rockies.

First, let it be said, the largest part of the Rockies’ struggle this season is bad pitching. But there have been any number of games where the pitching was good enough to win if the offense had lived up to the hype.

But, instead, they’ve been tight. And losing. A lot.

What’s missing? Well, the Rockies let four players leave in free agency last winter: A veteran 1st baseman/ outfielder whose replacement has put up better numbers this season; a long-time veteran outfielder whose replacement was voted to the All-Star game by his peers; a 2nd baseman who is having an MVP season for the Yankees, but whose replacement is playing really well; and a relief

Parkway problems It is troubling that a project of this magnitude could be approved, funded, and begun without detailed planning on the routing, scheduling, costs, and citizen disruptions of the final two Extensions. On the north, how will they satisfy FAA concerns and rules? How will they route through Flatirons and I-36 and SH128? The south extension through Golden has been adamantly opposed by the city. Even if supported, it would be a major, complicated project through the city. The current 10 mile Parkway is the simplest of the three components when considering the entire project. JPPHA’s lack of detail on the two extensions makes me think they would prefer that we

In sum, the Rockies are two up and two down on their replacements from last year, but are 20 games worse in the win-loss record. How to explain it? The first three players I named were the most popular players in the locker room, and two of them were famous for their ability to make people laugh and keep the mood light.

You think that matters when a team is in the midst of a six-game losing streak? You bet it does. Sometimes, it’s the difference between a six-game losing streak and a six win, nineteen loss month.

Every organization is dependent on chemistry for success, whether it’s a sports team, a faculty, a restaurant, or even a church. And it’s something that leaders should always give thought to. Even when the numbers don’t quite add up.

Richard Lavender, Arvada Trail jam I’ve been walking my dogs on the Ralston Creek Trail for about 30 years.

I start near the playground at Coors and walk west o the West Woods Golf Course and then back.

Aug. 10 there was an 811 Xcel Energy Race on my path. It was very crowded with runners, kids, bikes, strollers and dogs. West of Indiana the path is not very wide and there is not a lot of room to get off the path if you need to. Right after an underpass they set up a ‘watering station’ with cones on the sidewalk to show runners where to turn around. This area in particular became very congested

and dangerous.

Often there were runners, bikes and strollers taking up all of the sidewalk and no room for me and my dog. I kept pulling my dog over to let people get by while watching out for dogs, bikes and runners behind. I saw a child fall and people were jumping over him before his mother could get to him.

This is a public safety issue that is easily resolved. Race organizers should post the dates and times of their race on the trail ahead of time and should monitor the traffic. Safety/ courtesy issues could be given to race participants. Dogs should all be leashed and the leashes in the hands of the runner (not tied to a belt or backpack). A turn-around right after an underpass blocking part of the sidewalk was a very bad idea.

Orval Reid Gylling, Jr. 6/9/1932 - 8/16/2019

Longtime Alamosa resident Orval Reid Gylling, Jr., 87, passed away on August 16, 2019. He was born in Alamosa, Colorado on June 9, 1932 to Orval Reid Sr. and Carrie Alice (Motz) Gylling. Orval loved to farm and took a lot of pride in working the land and he had a great career with Coors Containers, where he retired from after 30 years of service. He enjoyed bowling, watching the Colorado Rockies, farming, horseshoes, eating food; especially pie, music, playing the piano and singing as well as his deep love for the musical stylings of Elvis’s gospel music.

Orval is survived by his children, Edward D. Gylling of Alamosa, Byron Leroy Gylling of Penrose, Colorado, Kalyn Joan Gylling, and William Reid Gylling, both of Aurora, Colorado as well as five grandchildren and six

great grandchildren as well as numerous extended loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lenora Joan Gylling and his brother Robert Gylling.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday August 26, 2019 at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the funeral home.

William G. (Bill) Scott, of Arvada, Colorado passed away quietly on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the age of 86 in the comfort of his own home with his loving wife of over 50 years at his side. Bill is survived by his wife Joyce, son Mark Scott (Pam Scott), granddaughters Kate Aschwege (Grant Aschwege), Margaret Peine, great grandson Grayson William Aschwege, sister Sara Scott (Jack Scott) and preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Peine and sister Sandra Reynolds. As a professional engineer in

Colorado, Bill was actively involved for many years in the expansion of Colorado’s growing ski industry and later become a principal and owner of one of the most respected engineering firms in Boulder Colorado. Bill was a loving husband, supportive father, and the best grandfather ever. He will be missed by all but not forgotten. n esports or competitive video game player is like a Formula 1 driver, says James Love. He says every reaction in the two sports demands intense, unbroken focus, and adds that esports athletes incorporate multiple gym workouts into their training schedule.

“The notion that esports players aren’t athletic is ignorant and outdated, to be blunt. Serious players put in six to 10 hours of gaming per day in order to hone their skills, and even though it looks like they’re sitting still, they’re exerting a lot of effort,” said Love, a communications director for the Philadelphia-based esports network N3rd Street Gamers, in an email.

The esports network opened up the Lakewood-based Localhost esports arena last year, an 18,000-square-foot facility that offers 120 custom-built gaming PCs and video game consoles like Xbox Ones and PlayStation 4s

and a 60-foot stage for events and tournaments. Love says business has been well, noting that the esports arena has put on “huge” three-day championship events with combined prizes of $25,000.

It’s expected that global esports revenue will exceed $1 billion this year, according to a report by esports analytics firm Newzoo. The esports industry has seen names like former MLB player Alex Rodriguez, NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal and celebrities like Jennifer Lopez investing in esports companies and teams.

“While gaming has always been a form of entertainment, three factors contributed to it becoming a sport: competition, tournaments and spectators. The number of people who count video games as a primary source of entertainment and leisure has been growing steadily since the invention of the joystick, plus more and more video games are being designed with the core goal to be played competitively against others,” said Love. “On top of that, you have an increasing amount of brands and products that consider esports the best way to reach their target demographic.”

Competition through video games Ryan Barr started running esports tournaments in Colorado before he

took his line of work to a national level. In that role, he’s traveled around the country, including to New York, Illinois, California and Pennsylvania.

Now he is focused on providing a platform for any esports player through The National Championship Series. The league gives esports players an opportunity to compete in video games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite and others. Competitors earn points based on participation and placement in games. In turn, those points can get esports players to national competitions.

“Everyone is a gamer, that’s the reality. Some people are not accepting to the fact that they are a game, because they might be more on the casual side,” said Barr who is commissioner of The National Championship Series.

“You can be competitive and still have fun.”

Scholarships through video games One of the focuses of the National Championship Series is to not only give esports players a platform to get recognized by professional esports teams — it also aims to help esports players show their skills to colleges.

or 100 years, Colorado has honored the power and connective potential of poetry, beginning when Gov. Oliver Shoup appointed Alice Polk Hill to the role of poet laureate in 1919. In that century there has never been a person of color in that role.

That changed with the July 23 announcement of Bobby LeFebre, who was selected by Gov. Jared Polis to take over for Joseph Hutchison. LeFebre will serve a four-year term as the state’s ninth laureate.

“Bobby LeFebre has an amazing ability to empower and connect communities COMING through the ATTRACTIONS wisdom of his words; that is why we are confident he will make a fantastic poet laureate,” said Governor Jared Polis in his announcement. “He embodies the spirit Clarke Reader of a ‘Colorado for All’ where everyone is included. I know he will be a strong advocate for the arts and art education as a way to bring us together.”

I spoke to LeFebre about the power of the form, what it meant to be chosen as laureate and more: Tell me about your background I’ve been writing poetry for a long, long time — at least since my mid-teens, and I’m 37 now, which makes me the youngest laureate we’ve had.

I came into poetry through hiphop culture, and in college started reading more poetry and learning about the American canon. I started competing in poetry slams, which took me all over country, and started performing at colleges and universities all over the country.

What keeps poetry a vital medium?

We’re seeing more poetry used in pop culture. Performance poetry really took off and is bringing it to a new generation of people who are digesting the form differently.

People on Instagram can use it and get thousands of followers, and though some people really scoff at that, I think we can have an ivory tower and also have this new form of engagement.

The poet laureate serves as an ambassador for poetry across the state, so I’ll be traveling to places for readings and workshops. I’m looking to get to places other laureates haven’t visited. I want to center and amplify marginalized voices and introduce, or reintroduce, poetry as something that’s accessible to all, can be woven into daily life, and find connections to people through it.

Tallman: ‘It’s been a great ride’ Donald Tallman retires as first non-rail fan to serve as railroad museum’s executive director

In the nearly 13 years he spent as executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum, Donald Tallman gained a deep appreciation for the role that railroads played in the growth and development of Colorado and the United States, he said.

“The history of railroading has a lot of stories to tell us,” Tallman said.

“The Colorado Railroad Museum is a place where you can step 140 years back in time. We use our collection to tell those stories.”

Tallman is retiring from the museum at the end of August. Replacing him is Paul Hammond of Southern California, a lifelong rail fan who has an extensive background of holding leadership roles with railroad and other transportation museums, as well as holding editor positions for locomotive and railway publications.

“He helped make it more visible and accessible to the public,” said Sharon McGee, one of the museum’s trustees.

She added the museum celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. “It’s difficult for any museum to make it that long.

But we continue to reach more people.”

Tallman, 63, was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan-Flint, and began his working career as a supervisor at a Buick manufacturing plant.

He later decided he wanted to pursue a different career path, and eventually earned a master’s degree from the University of Chicago Graduate Library School. Tallman worked for the Newberry Library in Chicago for several years before he was hired by an international consulting firm and relocated to San Francisco.

Tallman met his wife, Robin, in San Francisco when they were employed together in the same office. The two married in 1987 and in 1989, their daughter Danielle was born.

Tallman had become a strategic planner for Wells Fargo by this time, but then embarked on a new endeavor.

“We decided one of us should stay home, and we thought that I would do a good job as a full-time dad,” Tallman said. He stayed home with Danielle for six years, he said, and added during that time, “I had a blast. I absolutely loved it.”

Being a stay-at-home dad gave him an opportunity to lead in a different way than his career had permitted, Tallman said, and pursue his passion for music.

Though he sang through high school and college, Tallman became a professional singer in San Francisco — staff tenor for Saint Mary’s Cathedral and staff singer for Temple Sherith Israel, as well as singing with a professional chamber choir and performing as a soloist for a number of performing arts organizations.

“Music is such a powerful medium,” Tallman said. “You can connect with audiences on so many different levels.”

Tallman continues to sing the National Anthem at local events such as the Jefferson County Good News Breakfast and Buffalo Bill Days, as well as major sporting events such as for the Colorado Rockies baseball games and Denver Nuggets basketball games, and the upcoming Colorado Classic pro cycling bike race.

It was Robin Tallman’s job as the director of finance for a large telecommunications company that brought the two of them to Colorado when her office relocated. The family settled on Green Mountain in Lakewood in 1996.

“We love Colorado,” Robin Tallman said. She retired at the end of last year, and she added that now that they’re both retired, she’s “looking forward to having more adventures, both big and small. Retirement gives you more freedom.”

Donald Tallman expects the two of them will do some travelling, which includes visiting their daughter and son-and-law in Illinois more often, and trips to go hiking and alpine climbing in Colorado’s mountains.

In 1997, Tallman and Michael Shasberger cofound Augustana Arts, a nonprofit with a mission “to create opportunities to inspire and educate through music,” states its website.

Tallman served as the organization’s executive director for 10 years, until a friend told him about the position at the Colorado Railroad Museum.

“It was going to have to be something really special to get me to leave Augustana Arts,” Tallman said.

But he submitted his resume, got an interview, and in October 2006, Tallman became the first non-rail fan to assume the role of executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Al Blount, president of the museum’s board of trustees, agreed.

“He (Tallman) came in at the right time,” Blount said. “We’re preserving Colorado railroad history. Many kids don’t even know what a steam engine is until they visit the museum. We needed somebody who understood business and museums.”

Russ Powers, who has been a volunteer researcher in the railroad museum’s library for 16 years, said Tallman was instrumental in implementing outreach to a younger generation of rail fans.

“He has taken it from being a static museum,” Powers said, “to a place that features exciting and interesting exhibits as well as fun, family events.”

Tallman enjoys being involved in the community and serves on several local boards and commissions — the Budget and Audit Board for the city of Lakewood, the membership and media relations committees for the National Western Stock Show Association, the board for the Golden Visitor’s Center and the board of the Heritage Rail Alliance.

He was inducted into the Jefferson County Hall of Fame in 2018.

About 250 people, ranging from Tallman’s “gym buddies” to representatives of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), attended Tallman’s retirement party on Aug. 14 at the railroad museum.

“One of the most important things is the strength of relationships. It’s all about the people,” Tallman said. “I’ve met and developed relationships with hundreds in the community. It’s been a great ride.”

Golden ready with fanfare for the Colorado Classic Fans, spectators, community invited to participate in bike race events

Golden is getting amped-up for the Colorado Classic bike race. And there are number of ways for the community to get involved, whether it be cheering on the cyclists from the sideline or watching the race from a jumbo screen at a community viewing party at Parfet Park. Here is the needto-know information about the women’s pro cycling event during the Golden stage.

What is the Colorado Classic?

The Colorado Classic is a pro cycling road race. This is the third year for the race to take place, and this year, it is foregoing the men’s race and featuring women only. In fact, because of this, it will become the only women’s stand-alone stage race in the Western Hemisphere on the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)

calendar and USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour, states a press release.

The race takes place Aug. 22-25 and there are four stages in different Colorado locations. They are: Stage 1 — Steamboat Springs, Aug. 22 Stage 2 —Avon, Aug. 23 Stage 3 — Golden, Aug. 24 Stage 4 — Denver, Aug. 25 It is expected that about 100 women cyclists from around the world will be competing in the Colorado Classic this year. These athletes include Olympians, world champion cyclists and collegiate AllStars, among others.

The course in Golden The women cyclists will be in Golden for Stage 3 of the Colorado Classic. They will be doing a circuit race that starts and finishes under the Welcome Arch in downtown Golden, located on Washington Avenue at approximately 12th Street.

From the welcome arch, the racers will climb Washington Avenue to 18th Street, which they will take to Ford Street.

They will stay on Ford Street for about five blocks and will get off on 13th Street, which turns into West 32nd Avenue. They will race along West 32nd Avenue until they reach McIntire Street, where they will head north to Table Mountain Parkway. They will take Table Mountain Parkway to West 44th Avenue and will race along that until it turns into 10th Street, where they will connect onto Washington Avenue for the next lap.

The race will start at 11:30 a.m. and will finish at about 2 p.m.

Along their route in Golden, the women cyclists will see iconic Golden landmarks such as the buffalo statue outside of the Buffalo Rose, Foothills Art Center, Coors Brewery, Colorado Railroad Museum and, of course, views of the Table Mountains and Clear Creek.

Stage 3 fun facts ~ In Golden, the women cyclists will be racing a total of 63.7 miles. ~ The race will be a circuit consisting of seven laps that are about nine miles each. ~ Laps 2, 4 and 5 will be a sprint. ~ Lap 7 will be Queen of the Mountain.

Road closures in Golden and parking on race day Golden road closures Road closures in Golden will be extensive to ensure a safe route for the cycling competitors. Plan on closures throughout Golden on both Aug. 23 and Aug. 24.

1 p.m. Aug. 23: Washington Avenue from 11th to 13th streets.

12th Street from Prospector Alley to Miners Alley.

7 a.m. Aug. 24: Washington Avenue from 10th to 14th streets.

Jackson Street from 10th to Water streets.

11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 24: The entire race route will be closed, including streets, driveways and roadway access points.

CDOT will maintain northbound traffic on McIntyre Street from Highway 58, but McIntyre Street southbound from Highway 58 will be closed to traffic.

Parking in Golden on race day Though some parking will be available in downtown Golden, away from the race route and prior to the street closures, spectators are encouraged to park in the outskirts of downtown Golden and walk, bike or scooter in.

Free bike corrals will be available at Parfet Park and next to the tennis courts on 10th and Illinois streets.

For the spectators Watch it from on the sidelines Race fans are encouraged to line the streets of Golden to cheer on the women cyclists as they compete in the Colorado Classic. Being a circuit race, the cyclists will pass through downtown Golden seven times during the

race. Anywhere along the route will offer great viewing for spectators, and cowbells and other similar noisemakers are OK. Golden will host three Fan Zones for Stage 3.

Fan Zone 1: The race’s start and finish point under the Welcome Arch in downtown Golden, located on Washington Avenue at approximately 12th Street. This location will feature a sign-in ceremony at about 10:30 a.m. before the race starts, and the Podium Award Ceremony and press conference immediately following the race at about 2 p.m.

Fan Zone 2: 15th Street and Washington Avenue. This location will be great for watching the Queen of the Mountain on lap 7.

Fan Zone 3: The expo at Parfet Park.

There will be a jumbo screen airing a live feed of the race, and live entertainment on the VF Corporation stage.

For those who prefer to watch the race in-person just outside of the downtown area, New Terrain Brewing Company, 16401 Table Mountain Parkway in Golden, can offer a front seat to the race. Because the brewery is located on the race route, spectators should plan to ride their bike there, or arrive prior to the road closure at 11 a.m.

Stream it The Colorado Classic website will provide live stream video coverage from start-to-finish of each of the race’s four stages. Live streaming will begin on Aug. 22. Visit www.coloradoclassic.com/watch-now to learn more about viewing the race via the live streaming option.

Even more fun for the fans Golden Community Bike Ride Golden will be celebrating women cyclists with a Golden Community Bike Ride. This will be followed by the Movies and Music in the Park.

The Golden Community Bike Ride begins at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 23 under the Welcome Arch in downtown Golden.

Riders will proceed to the Lions Park Ballfields for pre-Colorado Classic activities, entertainment by special guests and race updates.

Movies and Music in the Park will begin at 7 p.m. in the ballfields with a musical performance by the Sweet Lillies. The movie will be Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Altra 5k The entire community is invited to

participate in the Colorado Classic Altra 5k — a free fun run for all ages and levels.

The Altra 5k begins at 9 a.m. on Aug. 24 under the Welcome Arch in downtown Golden.

The route will take participants northeast along the Clear Creek Trail and eventually double back to end at Parfet Park at about 10:30 a.m.

The Hope House participants are all looking forward to the bigger space, having seen what the nonprofit has done in their lives, said the moms — including Martinez Madera, who will attend Front Range Community College this fall to become a high school teacher; Arledge, who recently graduated from Hope House and plans to become a medical aesthetician; and Sullivan, who will graduate from Hope House this summer with plans to attend nursing school.

For Martinez Madera, the expansion means more women can experience the benefits she has, she said. She highlighted several major contributors in her journey toward self-sufficiency, including financial literacy classes and a car she received after it was donated to Hope House.

Because of these resources, “I don’t spend as much as I used to, and I dedicate that money to rent or expenses,” she said. “I’m going for a career for myself, which is another step closer to getting out of poverty.”

Chris Ball is a Grammy-nominated songwriter who has composed music for many television shows and toured for seven years as a musician with the rock band Firefall.

The 53-year-old Highlands Ranch resident still found time to become a competitive amateur disc golfer.

“When I traveled with Firefall, I brought my discs with me sometimes and I would go play,” Ball said. “I would do a lot more at home. It is just so easy to get out for an hour at a park near my house or to a field just to go practice and hone the same shot over and over again.

“Going back to my teenage years, I loved to play freestyle Frisbee, just playing in a park. I just thought disc golf was a lot of fun at first. It was just kind of fun to mix Frisbee and golf, throwing at a basket. We’ve come a long way from throwing ultimate discs at trees in a park and calling it ‘golf ’ `or ‘frolf ’ ‘’ Disc golf can be hard to play.

Throwing a small disc a long way takes skill, practice and can be challenging to master. The sport is played like traditional golf, except that flying discs are used instead of a golf ball.

The sport was created in the early 1970s with the object of completing each hole with the fewest strokes, or throws, in this case. The discs are thrown at metal baskets.

There are four types of discs used in disc golf. There are distance drivers, which are thin, sharp-edged, dense and require speed when throwing. Drives can go up to 400 feet if thrown properly.

Fairway drivers are easier to control and usually have more glide time.

Midrange discs are bulkier and less aerodynamic with a more rounded outside lip. Putters are shaped more like traditional Frisbees and are heavier.

“Disc golf, I would have to say over the past 10 years, is a growing sport here in Colorado and across the country,” said Ray Woodruff, the Colorado Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) coordinator and Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc Golf Championship tournament director.

“I was first introduced to the game in 1996 and enjoyed several years of recreational play until joining the tournament scene in 2007. I have been on the board of directors for the Mile High Disc Golf Club since 2011.”

In a 2019 PDGA demographics report, the association reported it has 120,000 lifetime members and 46,00 active players. Colorado has 1,195 PDGA participants.

Association helps grow the game

olorado High School Activities Association commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green called it a very bold stance.

The CHSAA Board of Directors in June approved a Mental Health Initiative that mandates all coaches take a course on mental health and suicide prevention. It could be a class set up by the various school districts or one offered by the NHFS Learning Center.

Colorado and the CHSAA has been recognized nationally for the valiant effort to try to help troubled teenagers.

“We were inundated not only statewide but from national media for the steps that we took,” said BlanfordGreen. “Everything that we have heard OVERTIME has been positive.

When the CHSAA mandates things, sometimes we get pushback, but this probably is the first thing we’ve put out in a long time that 100% of the people say it was the right Jim Benton thing to do.

“We’re not doing it because we want any accolades. We’re doing it because we have kids in crises. It opened the door for us being elevated as a state looking for the best interest for our kids socially, emotionally as well as physically.”

CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Jenn Roberts-Uhlig is the head of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, which spearheaded the creation of the initiative.

“Everyone in this state is trying to wrap their heads and arms around kiddos to see what we can do to support them and see if we can make this go away,” said Roberts-Uhlig. “If we can hit it from all angles, that’s our goal.”

CHSAA tries to minimize the amount of mandates placed on coaches but national data reveals that steps need to be taken.

In the most recent 2017 data available, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control reported that for youngsters of all races and sexes between the ages of 10 and 19, there were 3,008 suicides in the United States for a population of 41,910,114, which works out to a crude rate of 7.18. Crude rate is the number of deaths occurring in a specified population per year, usually expressed as the number of cases per 100,000.

In Colorado, there were 99 deaths for a 719,586 population, a rate almost double the national average.

The PDGA points out that as many as 500,000 people play the sport regularly. The 2019 PDGA course directory lists 6,316 courses in the United States.

There are more than 100 courses listed in Colorado. Some courses are private and many were created by homeowners associations.

“Practicing in a field is the key to what it takes to be a decent player,” Ball said. “The sport is fun, there are hundreds of free courses nationwide and you don’t have to be a great athlete to enjoy getting out in the fresh air and playing. But to become really good, just like anything, you have to practice.

“Now, I play for the love of the game, being outdoors and in Colorado, where we have incredible courses up in the mountains. We have great courses in and around Denver, and it is free. That’s a big part of it. The only thing that costs you is if you lose a disc.”

According to PDGA demographics, only 8% of its membership is female, but there were 134 women who played in the Rocky Mountain Women’s Disc

Erika Weir, a PDGA member since 2014 who resides in Denver, was one of the entrants in the Open division. She finished fifth. “What makes a good disc golfer to me is the first thing you have to do is be patient and be willing to learn,” Weir said. “A lot of times, you have discs that may or may not work for you and you need to work through them or be willing to switch to another disc. Obviously being passionate and having a good work ethic about it is super helpful. If you have any background in throwing it’s helpful. Maybe you throw a football or maybe you were a former softball or baseball player.

Those skills translate, too.”

Brandon Nelson, of Littleton, has been playing disc golf for 10 years.

The president of Dragon Disc Golf Club — which on its website lists “home courses” in Aurora, Littleton and Greenwood Village — is the director for six local tournaments this year.

“The sport is growing worldwide,” Nelson said. “I know the Denver area has a huge disc golf following.

It’s going to continue to grow. It’s growing every year and it’s not on a downward trend, either.”
