Developer, citizens lay claim to same stretch of property Neighbors say plan for incoming Kimbrough Heights violates rights

A property line dispute around what could be as little as one and a half feet may have large implications for the city.

The dispute was one of several matters that took center stage at the Arvada City Council’s Aug. 5 meeting, when the city held a public hearing on the proposed development of townhome community Kimbrough Heights.

The applicant, Prominent Residential Properties, has worked with KT Engineering to draft a plan for a 14unit duplex community on a 1.29-acre plot bordered by West 62nd Avenue, Dover Street and Carr Street.

The plans have sparked conflict with neighbors in two houses directly north of the plot, who claim the development will negatively impact their

properties.

John Hawley believes the developer’s plans “include land that I own,” he said, with the plan showing Hawley’s property line roughly two feet north of where he claims the line lies.

As a result, the developer plans to build a fence “in my yard and through my buildings,” he said. “Why is my family’s home less important than this development’s profits?”

Hawley’s conclusions stem from a 1993 land survey conducted by Kurt Linn; however, Prominent Residential Properties claims the survey is inaccurate, relying instead on surveyor Christopher Mcelvain’s land survey, which identified the property line at the more northerly location.

Asked to vote on three items related to the plot, including the developer’s preliminary development plan (PDP) and an ordinance to rezone the space for residential use, councilmembers questioned what the differing survey results meant for the city’s decision.

Attorney Lori Graham said council could move forward with approval because the developer will be required to submit a more comprehensive land

survey with the final development plan.

Regardless of that survey’s findings, said Steve Lindsey with Prominent Residential Properties, there should be “no impact on the way development will be done.”

If Linn’s survey and Hawley are correct, plans will essentially stay the same, with potential for the developer to alter fencing or work with Hawley on another solution, he said.

If Mcelvain’s survey and Lindsey are correct, Prominent Residential Properties will either build the fence as planned or replace Hawley’s fence with his permission, eliminating the need for two fences.

“Our intent is not to go in there and start tearing fences down and tearing buildings down,” Lindsey said.

Hawley did not have an opportunity to address these comments during the meeting but previously said that, should the development move forward, he plans to take legal action.

Neighbor John Moore likewise raised concerns, critiquing the townhomes’ closeness to his property.

Moore’s property will have a 9-foot1-inch setback and a rooftop deck elevated about 30 feet and overlooking Moore’s property, “my clients will have very little privacy in their home,” said Dennis Green, Moore’s attorney.

“We would like to see at least 10 feet (for the setback),” he said.

City staff said the proposed building in question likely cannot be moved because of factors like drainage and utilities.

But Lindsey said he would pursue putting screens in place on the north edges of the decks and attempt to build the decks on the southern portions of the rooftops to ensure privacy.

After the addition of a friendly amendment to reflect this offer, and a second to prevent the removal of Hawley’s structures in case of dispute, council voted to approve the PDP 6-0. Councilmember Nancy Ford was absent.

“After the discussion, I feel a little bit more comfortable with the criteria being met,” said Councilmember Bob Fifer. “This area has needed some revitalization.”

4-H youths shine at Jeffco Fair & Festival Event highlights entertainment, exhibits, food, fun

From cake decorating to raising chickens, Jefferson County’s 4-H youths work hard on their projects all year to showcase them an-

nually at the Jeffco Fair & Festival.

The 2019 fair was Aug. 9 to 11 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Golden. The weekend featured a variety of shows and entertainment, including a Colorado Professional Rodeo Association rodeo, live music on two stages, food and arts-and-crafts vendors, children’s activities, and, of course, the 4-H youth projects.

LED Lighting Has Some Health & Vision Side Effects Worth Considering

By JIM SMITH, Realtor® In my July 18th column, online at www.JimSmithColumns.com, I wrote about my favorite home improvements, including the adoption of LED lighting, which I prefer to CFL lighting and is far more energy efficient than incandescent lighting. In particular, I wrote glowingly, so to speak, about “daylight” LEDs — the whitest light available, so wellnamed for matching the color of bright sunlight.

In our office, I replaced all our “soft white” LED light bulbs with “daylight” bulbs to match the color of sunlight coming through our four Velux sun tunnels.

A reader of this column alerted me to some recent research which shows “daylight” LEDs to be harmful to vision, exacerbating macular degeneration, and disruptive of our circadian rhythm (important for good sleep) specifically be-

cause it simulates full natural sunlight.

I urge you to Google “daylight LEDs and health,” as I did, and you’ll find that one of the top links is for a June 2016 American Medical Association policy statement (adopted unanimously at their annual meeting) warning about health and safety problems associated with white LED lighting, so common now in the lighting of American streets.

The reader who alerted me to this topic suffers from early stage macular degeneration. He said he has replaced all

The day started with a series of lines for Loretta Ornelas and her three grandchildren: a line to get around the parking lot of Wheat Ridge’s Stevens Elementary, where cars had begun piling up along the front curb; a line to get inside the school; a line to get to the auditorium; and a line to get through the auditorium, where school supplies were being distributed.

But for Ornelas, falling into line with hundreds of other families was well worth it if it meant setting up her grandchildren for success.

In fact, the lines were no hassle at all.

“The organization’s been amazing.

We haven’t been waiting an hour,” she said. “The Action Center has the best people.”

On Monday, Aug. 5, 988 students showed up to Stevens Elementary for the Action Center’s annual school supply distribution, which invited families to the school from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that Monday through Friday to pick up supplies, many of which were donated by Cardel Homes.

Each year, the event is open to county residents, district families and “anybody who feels they’re in need,” Action Center communications coordinator Tawney Eisenbraun said.

helps them succeed in school, and they have the supplies to feel good and feel like they’re a part of the class,” she said.

Having brought her grandchildren to the event the previous year, Ornelas had been looking forward to the event’s return, she said. She and her family walked through the distribution with Superintendent Jason Glass, who kept up a Jeffco Public Schools tradition by showing his support at the event on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

“This is one way I can say ‘thank you’ on behalf of Jeffco Public Schools, to the Action Center and all of the volunteers and donors who have made this day happen,” he said.

“Kids in Jeffco come from all kinds of backgrounds. It’s so helpful to have an agency like the Action Center supporting families.”

Volunteer Programs Director Barbara Penning of the Action Center agreed, saying that with many in the county struggling to afford increasing rents and other expenses, the event represents a step toward easing families’ financial burden.

“We want to support all people, and to make sure people feel respected,” she said.

In addition to providing a practical resource for parents, the distribution put smiles on students’ faces as they picked out their favorite colored backpacks, binders and “bonus” school supply items in the auditorium.

“We’re just here to hopefully get the best school supplies,” said seventhgrader James Basinger, a Ken Caryl Middle School student. “School supplies are kind of expensive, and this makes sure it’s not as hard for

families.”

Deer Creek Middle School and Ken Caryl Middle School students Sam Lyall and Sam Allin, who showed up to the event as volunteers, also praised the distribution for its fun energy and important contributions.

For them, those elements have brought them back to volunteer year after year, Allin said. “It was a great experience, and I’m excited to do it again.”

Lyall agreed.

“It’s really cool to be able to do this and interact with the kids,” he said.

The Action Center estimated the event would serve 5,000 students over the course of the week, making it the largest and widest-reaching school supply distribution in the county, Penning said.

But with roughly 25,000 other low-income district students still in need of supplies by her estimate, she praised schools, churches and the entire community for putting on similar events for their neighborhoods.

She likewise celebrated parents for reorganizing their work schedules and commuting to Wheat Ridge to ensure their children’s success this school year.

“We’ve had so many parents coming in on their lunch breaks saying, ‘I’ve got to do this for my kid,’” she said. “We’re working together to change the framework of our community.”

Police, residents forge bonds on National Night Out Law enforcement visits 19 neighborhoods for annual celebration

In keeping with Arvada’s new National Night Out protocol established in 2018 — when the centralized Olde Town celebration was replaced with a number of neighborhood block parties scattered throughout the city — 19 communities registered with the city to throw their own celebrations the night of Aug. 6.

Despite the citywide practice starting just last year, several Arvada neighborhoods have been throwing their own events on National Night Out, which encourages neighbors and law enforcement personnel to get to know one another, for more than a decade.

Club Crest South in north Arvada is one of those neighborhoods, where Jan Boespflug and the Neighbors Connected group have thrown the celebration every year since 2008.

“This is a community that always gets together, and every year, we want to be a part of it,” said Arvada Police Cmdr. Bob Vander Veen, who attended

the block party along with a number of other law enforcement officials.

Over the years, the Neighbors Connected group has worked to build such gatherings from a handful of people to roughly 100 attendees.

“Our neighborhood is one of the most fantastic neighborhoods you could live in, because everyone participates,” Boespflug said. “It’s been pretty exciting to watch this grow every year.”

To the southwest of Club Crest, Meadowlake neighbors gathered for their 10th annual National Night Out, held at Meadowlake Park on Zinnia Street.

“We enjoy it because we get to meet all the new neighbors, and lately, we’ve had a lot of houses for sale,” said Don Antill, who helped organize the party with his wife. “This is the time of year we get to reacquaint with our old neighbors, too. It’s a great reason to get the community together.”

Vice president of the Arvada Professional Fire Fighters Association Dan Knoebel agreed. He added that, with so many Arvada communities throwing their own parties, anyone has the chance to get involved in the celebration.

“It allows for more people to participate,” he said. “It’s nice to see all the neighbors getting together like this.”

Environment, safety at center of toll road debate Jefferson Parkway agency says proposed route is sound choice

I

n September 2017, Randy Stafford walked into a public forum of the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA), prepared to ask several questions about the public safety and environmental impacts of the future Jefferson Parkway, a toll road that will run through northwest Arvada.

Those questions would lead him to months of presentations, discussions and plans — and, naturally, more questions — after that first meeting prompted Stafford to apply for the Jefferson Parkway Advisory Committee (JPAC).

“I decided on the spur of the moment, ‘I’m going to be on this committee,’” he said.

“And the reason I was applying was public safety.”

JPAC was a committee of community members, formed by the JPPHA, to give feedback on parkway plans.

JPAC’s work culminated with official recommendations made to the JPPHA board in November 2018.

Stafford’s concerns — which include environmental changes and plutonium contamination along the portion of the parkway next to Rocky Flats — echo the concerns of some in the Jefferson County community. Those community members question what the coming construction and permanent parkway will mean for nearby citizens, wildlife and future generations.

Effects of a roadway For Colorado State University Professor Emeritus David Hendricks, who lives near 80th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, the Jefferson Parkway represents “an irreversible change in the environment,” he said.

“The freeway will permanently mar the present incomparable scenic vistas, as seen, for example, while driving C-93,” he said. “Such mountain views are unique to Colorado and a major reason that people are attracted to our environment.”

To be sure, views in Arvada will change near the highway, which will be four lanes wide and roughly 10 miles long.

Next week, reporters Christy Steadman and Van Divier wrap up the series by talking to those who do, and do not, want the road the most, and explain what’s next. planners behind the parkway have stood by its location, saying a purpose of the road is to fill in the last remaining gap of the beltway that loops around the Denver area.

One parkway planner, David Jones, an Arvada city councilmember and chairman of the JPPHA board, acknowledged the potential landscape changes the parkway will bring — he’ll be able to see the parkway from his backyard in Leyden Rock, he said. But for him, the benefits of the location warrant the change.

“It will help to move traffic around the city, and it’s a piece of the puzzle that needs to be completed,” he said.

He added that the board has taken JPAC recommendations, including requiring sound and light mitigation along the part of the road near Leyden Rock, to address citizens’ concerns.

Jones’ neighbors will likewise find themselves living on the edge of the parkway, with some of their houses less than 200 feet from the road, according to a calculation by Leyden Rock resident Brett Vernon based on a map of the proposed parkway.

tain parts of Leyden Rock, including the cul-de-sac and path near W. 87th Avenue, will sit 160 feet and 180 feet from the road, respectively.

Those neighbors find themselves concerned not only with a changing landscape, but with potential pollution-related health complications the road could bring. A number of studies have found that women and children in particular are at a greater risk of developing respiratory or pulmonary conditions if they live in a community with a major freeway.

“We (in Leyden Rock) will be much closer to the road than almost anyone else on this beltway,” Vernon said.

“Our community needs to weigh in.”

Hendricks also questioned how the road will impact animals’ safety, as have others, especially regarding animals that are a part of the newly created Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge.

According to the refuge’s conservation plan and environmental impact statement, “new increased noise along any of the adjacent corridors (to the refuge) could alter the behavior and productivity of some wildlife species on the refuge,” as could artificial lighting.

However, the impacts of the Jefferson Parkway will likely be “limited,” said Michael D’agostino, the refuge’s public affairs specialist. The portion

Cancer concerns discussed In addition to addressing the

roadway’s proximity to houses, JPAC spent a good deal of time discussing the parkway’s proximity to former nuclear weapons plant Rocky Flats, Stafford said.

Located just north of the Candelas neighborhood, west of Indiana Street, the Rocky Flats weapons plant complex was established in 1952 and closed in 1989 after federal agents found carcinogenic particles had contaminated its soil, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).

The cleanup was completed by the early 2000s with the old buildings and contaminated waste removed or buried. The buffer zone around the core of the old facility has been designated a wildlife refuge, but with traces of certain elements, including plutonium, still found in the area’s soil, many believe the site remains dangerous.

And many believe they have seen the effects of this firsthand, such as Bonnie Graham-Reed, who helped found the community group Rocky Flats Right To Know. Graham-Reed, who lives in the Lake Arbor neighborhood, says she has seen “incredibly high levels of cancer” in her neighborhood — and she suspects Rocky Flats is to blame.

She believes construction of the parkway will dig up contaminated dirt and cause nearby individuals to inhale the cancerous particles — and Stafford agrees.

“It’s immoral for the government to exacerbate the problem with construction projects that will suspend

dust into the air,” he said.

But the JPPHA holds that the project will pose no public health risk.

“The Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment all have declared that the proposed alignment of the Jefferson Parkway near Rocky Flats is safe for unlimited use,” said authority spokesperson Sheryl Machado.

A 2016 CDPHE study found that communities near Rocky Flats have not seen higher incidences of 10 different cancers as compared to other areas.

Critics denounced the study for excluding those who have moved away from the analyzed communities. Stafford and others still call any construction near the plant “irresponsible.”

“It basically comes down to a question of economic development versus public health,” Stafford said.

Graham-Reed believes there are several options to prevent the construction of the parkway — including legal action related to Rocky Flats — that would spare the community potential safety hazards.

But should the parkway move forward as planned, she said, her daily plans may change.

“We’re just outside the work area.

My family is going to have a serious discussion if we should go somewhere while they’re building it,” she said. “I haven’t moved; this is my home. And I want to stop this parkway.”

The last, final diatribe on an unneeded, unnecessary word

I

, like, give up.

Once a year for the past eight years, I have written a column about the extra-grammatical use of the word “like” and its part in the ruination of the English language.

Each column has included the disclaimer that I am an imperfect grammarian myself, and I am not the ultimate arbiter of what is and is not good English.

But I know what I like, as it were.

I thought by now “like” would have gone away, but I see and hear that it hasn’t and now consider it a lost cause.

Therefore, this will be my final diatribe.

I refer anyone who cares about language to John McWhorter. McWhorter

verbal laziness.

There’s a title of a chapter in one of McWhorter’s books — “Words on the Move” — that summarizes the problem: “When Words Stop Being Words.”

It’s natural to hem and haw, and stumble a bit in casual conversations.

Everyone at a dinner table doesn’t speak in concise sentences, like they often do in films.

We stop, we start over, change in mid-word to something else.

McWhorter calls that “easing” language.

But for some, that eased language is all the time.

I have decided to concede to it after a recent experience in a dentist’s chair, which, for many, would be torture enough.

Back-to-school time calls for health checklist

A

ugust marks back-to-school season, an ideal time for parents in Colorado to help improve their children’s health.

Before schedules become packed with classes, homework and extracurricular activities, here’s a back-to-school health checklist to help give children a better chance to succeed inside and outside the classroom: Get a comprehensive eye exam About 80% of what children learn is through their eyes. With that in mind, a child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur before age 1, again at age 3 and before entering school. If no vision issues are detected, school-aged children should have an exam at least once every two years. Also, a school’s vision screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam, as screenings can miss conditions such as poor eye alignment, focusing issues and farsightedness.

The inability to see clearly can affect a child’s physical, emotional and social development, which in turn can affect academic and athletic performance.

Children often don’t complain if their vision isn’t normal, so it’s important to look for possible signs such as squinting while reading or watching television, difficulty hitting or catching a ball, or headaches when watching 3D movies.

This is especially true for children, as untreated dental problems may diminish attention, decrease self-esteem and limit a child’s ability to learn at school.

Tooth decay is largely preventable, yet it ranks as the most common chronic disease among children.

About 33% of young kids (ages 2 to 8) have cavities in their baby teeth, and 20% of kids in the same age group have cavities in their adult teeth. With that in mind, parents should schedule regular dental exams every six months, especially at schools that require a back-to-school dental checkup.

Children’s vaccines are 90% to 99% effective and may help protect kids from diseases such as mumps, tetanus and chicken pox. By helping reduce the risk of contracting potentially preventable diseases such as the flu, children may have fewer school absences.

Parents should check with their

doctor to determine what immunizations are appropriate based on age.

Most shots are given by the time children are 2 years old, but some are administered into the teen years. If your child runs a low-grade fever or has swelling in the shot location after the immunization, these minor side effects typically last a couple days.

Apply a cool, wet washcloth on the sore area to help ease discomfort, but check with your doctor about the appropriateness of over-the-counter pain medications.

Back-to-school season is an exciting time for many children and their parents. Consider these guidelines to help encourage your child’s health and success throughout the school year.

Meat alternatives grow in popularity National Thrift Store Day — save the date (and money)

Restaurant owners, health expert weigh in on benefits, challenges

one are the days when vegans and vegetarians couldn’t order a hamburger on the menu.

Alternative meat brands such as Impossible Foods and Beyond Burger are popping up in not only sit-down restaurants and grocery stores, but also fast food joints across the country.

They call it the future of protein: the Beyond Burger uses a mix of legumes, oils, rice protein, potato starch and other vegan-friendly ingredients, whereas the Impossible Burger is made from mostly soy.

Both substances are processed into a patty or sausage, or ground up into crumbles for recipes such as tacos.

According to Forbes.com, the plantbased craze is on the rise, with 95% of U.S. grocery stores selling plantbased meat products and an increasing number of restaurants adding similar options to their menus.

Wes Moralez, who owns the Brutal Poodle on South Broadway in Denver, decided to start serving the Beyond Burger in his heavy-metalthemed restaurant earlier this year.

The plant-based alternative looks and tastes like beef, he said, adding that the product fits his clientele.

“Here we have a niche concept that revolves around heavymetal punk rock,” Moralez said. “In that scene, there are a ton of vegans and vegetarians.”

But the growing popularity and limited supply of the products has presented challenges for some restaurants.

That was the case for Curtis Baca, manager of Steuben’s in Arvada.

“We would never be able to get them,” he said of the Impossible Burger. “So we couldn’t keep it on the menu.”

Instead his restaurant serves a plant-based veggie burger that is made in-house. While he doesn’t see

Jerry Casados, a plant-based nutritionist from Parker, switched his diet 12 years ago after several scares with heart disease, high blood pressure and weight gain.

Rather than moving forward with more medical tests, he decided to try a strict plant-based diet, combined with medication, for 30 days.

“My cholesterol dropped about 30 points,” Casados said. “My doctor said, ‘What did you do?’ I said, ‘I changed my diet,’ and that’s the last time I saw him.”

Casados, who worked in information technology, went back to school to become a nutritionist and is now off all medication. He and his wife host a yearly summit to inform others on the benefits of plant-based eating.

The approach, he said, is more holistic.

The nonprofit provides services designed to end child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness. “This is our first year celebrating the day, and it’s a great way to support the work we do in a lighthearted way.”

In addition to sales, there will also be a door prize, games like tag the treasure (where participants guess the price of items), and frequent shoppers can bring a friend and receive an extra stamp on their shopper card. Plus, 90 Degrees Chocolate food truck will be on hand as well serving sweet treats.

Perhaps the best part of the event is 100% of dollars spent go to fund Family Tree’s work. The children and families the organization has worked with have been in horrendous situations and need the support of the community. They benefit from Treasure Trunk in another way — they receive vouchers to shop there for things like interview outfits and other necessities.

“It’s going to be a fun event and a chance for people to get to know us,” Bolliger said. “There’s still a lot of people in our community who don’t know about us but being hyper local like we are is really important.”

In the past, Arvada Days has been about embracing the old ways and “taking a walk back in time,” Nina Piccinini of the Arvada Festivals Commission said.

But with its third annual celebration on the horizon, the city plans to spice things up by embracing the old and the new, throwing different ideas that could become traditions into the mix.

“We love the concept of good oldfashioned family fun, so now it’s really about evolving the event,” she said.

“We’ve made some changes this year.”

The free festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 24 at Clear Creek Valley Park, 5900 N. Tennyson St. For the first time, the event will include a Dutch Oven Cook-Off in which participants may cook or bake any dish in a Dutch oven. Teams of up to five people may participate together, and the competition is open to both children and adults.

Registration for the cook-off was still open as of Aug. 8. Piccinini encouraged those interested to register

Meanwhile, with the establishment of another new event, guests can sample beers from Boulder’s Avery Brewing at the Arvada Days Beer Garden. All proceeds from beverage

sales will go to Hope House, an Arvada nonprofit dedicated to providing housing, education and other services to teenaged and young adult mothers.

“Hope House was a nonprofit we helped a couple years ago, and they helped tremendously with volunteers

and logistics,” said Brenda Hergenreder, special events coordinator with the city. “We really wanted to push this event and get more people out, and we felt they would be a good fit.”

Lisa Steven, executive director of Hope House, said the event showcases just one way the Arvada community has shown support for the nonprofit.

“Community support makes all the difference for our teen moms, who are working hard to break the cycle of poverty and give their children a bright future,” she said.

Piccinini invited the entire community out for the beer garden, train rides, competitions, petting zoo and a “time of simplicity and coming together.”

“Kids are getting back to school, and it’s one of the last events of the summer,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to enjoy some sun and get out with the community.”

Faith Christian trap team takes aim at national championship

When Coach Mark Passamaneck started the trap shooting team at Faith Christian High School in 2018, he had no way of knowing that his athletes — some of whom had no shooting experience, some of whom had no sports experience and one of whom had expected the team to be a pottery club because of a flyer typo — would go to the championships just a year later.

But after one season as a school club and another as a letter sport, the team “swept the podium at State for team, varsity and junior varsity” back in June, Passamaneck said.

By July, the team found itself taking 22nd place at the 2019 National Championships after securing one of 80 spots in the final round.

The team is one of nine Colorado schools in the USA High School Clay Target League, which requires students to earn safety certification before they can participate, according to the league’s website.

As coach, Passamaneck said he oversees this process to ensure the safety of his athletes.

“The safety aspect is stressed significantly more than the competition aspect for new students,” he said.

If you look at the shotgun more as a tool, like a golf club, you can get past that initial fear of firearms.”

Faith Christian senior Aviana Large agreed. Large joined the team as a junior and plans to participate again in the spring 2020 season.

“It’s more about learning about gun safety and keeping people safe, which is something everyone should know,” she said. “My favorite part was watching everyone — no matter where they started, they improved.”

Passamaneck agreed, saying that each of last season’s 30 athletes came into their own with the sport, regardless of where they came from.

“We have the widest mix of backgrounds and personalities of any club in the school,” he said. “The valedictorian was on the team, we have varsity athletes. It’s pretty amazing.”

For Passamaneck’s son, senior Blake Passamaneck, that diversity allowed him to compete with students he otherwise wouldn’t have, he said — as well as some he’s competed with before on other sports teams.

Having played baseball for the high school throughout the past three years, Blake said trap adds a new twist into competition.

“Baseball is very competitive, but when I went to State for trap, I felt relaxed,” Blake said. “Just shooting is probably the most fun part about it.”

The sport has gained momentum both within the school and nationwide, Mark said. He suggested the reason could be the “visual feedback and instant gratification” of the sport, and that more students and parents have developed an understanding of the sport’s purpose.

“There comes a time when we can no longer play soccer or football or baseball,” he said, “but with a shoot-

ing sport, as long as you can see and move your hands, you can shoot.”

As the sport grows in popularity, a number of parents from nearby schools have asked him if their children can shoot on the Faith Christian team, he said, with the next closest team to Arvada located about 60 miles away at Platte Valley High School in Kersey, Colo.

“The sport has been growing.

There’s something that happens to teens when you treat them like adults and put a firearm in their hands; it’s a significant step,” he said. “As a coach, I’m investing in making better citizens.”

Likewise praising the numerous benefits of the sport, Large encouraged nearby schools to establish trap teams of their own.

“I hope more schools consider offering this as a sport, and I hope this could become a CHSAA-sanctioned sport,” she said. “This is a sport anyone could get involved in.”

Millie Mayo Only a few days after the Jeffco Fair & Festival wraps up, Millie Mayo will be heading off to Texas A&M University to study animal science and pursue her path of becoming a veterinarian.

Mayo, 18, of Arvada participated in her final 4-H livestock competition this year because she is aging out of 4-H. She showed a llama and two pigs.

Llamas are different and unique, Mayo said, “and I’ve always enjoyed the bond between the llama and the handler.”

Mayo was involved with 4-H for six years, but has been showing llamas since she was 5. For the past four years, Mayo showed her llama Humphrey, but this summer, Humphrey died unexpectedly.

But the llama community stepped up and she was provided Blue, a 12-year-old heavy wool male, to work with for the summer.

“4-H provides you with a community that’s hard to find these days,” Mayo said.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to become involved in your community and make a bigger impact on those around you.”
