Arvada-grown food helps low-income families all over Denver Graduated Regis students, professors add Arvada farm to nonprofit

eronica Lewis, Abby Wagner and Cailin Osborne have “been farming together for years,” Lewis said.

But when the women met roughly five years ago, they weren’t farmers — they were students at Regis University, all part of the same cohort program for a farm-based minor and each majoring in something different.

“We all had very different majors.

That was kind of the point,” Lewis said. “We all bring different things to the table.”

In collaboration with founders and Regis professors Fatuma Emmad and Damien Thompson, the three women have helped establish and oversee Frontline Farming, a nonprofit that provides low- and no-cost food and education to the Colorado community.

The organization runs four farm plots, having created its most recent farm in Arvada last January. Located on Garrison Street north of 68th Avenue, the two-acre farm rests among neighborhood homes and the Majestic View Nature Center.

“The first time Abby and I came to this land, we immediately saw how much potential it had,” Lewis said. “There’s so much space, and we didn’t have anything this far north.

It’s really important we reach all corners of Denver.”

The farmers now grow a variety of crops — including corn, peppers, carrots and strawberries — to be used in a variety of programs.

Some crops are sold for reduced prices at the nonprofit’s “pay what you can” farmstands around the Denver metro area. At the stands, which appear semiweekly at Celebration Gardens, 1650 S. Birch St., and weekly near Sister Gardens, 2861 W. 52nd Ave., the farmers are also happy to share their knowledge, Osborne said.

ful of what’s seasonally ready, and working with people to find different recipes,” she said.

The nonprofit also donates produce to individuals with serious illnesses through its weekly Healing Foods program, a partnership with several organizations including Project Angel Heart, SafeHouse Denver and Family Tree.

Additionally, the farm sets up a weekly no-cost grocery store with items donated by Whole Foods, Lewis said. The store rotates from site to site each week.

These programs, as well as the others put on by the nonprofit, rely heavily on the efforts of volunteers, the farmers said.

“We accept everyone,” Lewis said.

“Anyone who comes with any level of ability, we would love their help.”

For Golden resident Mel Kirk, who started volunteering with the farm this summer, the volunteering opportunity has taught him about far more than just farming.

“I love listening to the others and going, `oh, I didn’t know about that music app,’” he said. “What I get out of this is them. It’s like coming home in some ways.”

Kirk helps out with a number of tasks, such as weeding and maintaining the plots, he said.

“It goes beyond me,” he said. “I can’t think of a more important message.”

Lewis encouraged prospective volunteers to contact her at veronica@ frontlinefarming.org. She and the others highlighted how rewarding the work has been, despite the 10-hour-orlonger work days.

“Freshly out of college, turning this into your whole world is different,” Wagner said, “but we’re empowering people to know their food is medicine. We want them to know they deserve this.”

Even when the day is done, Osborne said, the farmers find themselves doing exactly what they do during the day: talking about the farm, and talking to each other.

“It makes work a lot easier when it’s just hanging out with your friends,” she said. “We’re all so closeknit. We support each other in any way we can.”

Amazon’s Deal With Real Estate Franchisor Could Be a Game Changer

Maybe you heard about the recent deal between Amazon and Realogy in which they give buyers $1,000 to $5,000 in smart-home products if you let them assign you an agent.

Unless you’re in real estate, you probably never heard of Realogy. They’re a holding company which owns multiple real estate franchisors that you have heard of—Coldwell Banker, Century 21, Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate, Sotheby’s International Realty and ERA Real Estate.

Denver is one of 15 markets where this program called “Turnkey” is being rolled out, with the intention of making it nationwide.

Being the curious journalist that I am, I pretended to be a home buyer and went to Amazon’s website for this program. I filled in my name, email address (not the one that identifies me as a real estate agent) and cell number, and within a minute received a phone call from a man at a Realogy affiliate, who asked me where I was looking (I said Golden & Arvada), price range (I said $500,000), and whether I owned and would be selling my current home. (I said yes.)

Then he explained (because I asked) that he was sending a text to all the participating “highly screened” agents in my market and would assign me the first agent who responded to the text. I would not be able to select the agent.

The agent who was assigned to me was a newer agent from the Coldwell Banker office in Longmont. I discovered this by Googling her — she didn’t tell me. I said this would not work for me, and we ended the conversation.

I expect to receive a follow-up call from the program’s “concierge” who will likely try to match me up with another agent. I’ll probe for additional details.

Having begun my real estate career at Coldwell Banker, I have some insights on the company and its parent company, Realogy. This program is administered by Realogy’s relocation business called Cartus. I suspect that the “pre-screened” agents are the same ones who get relocation leads, and I half– expected to be connected with an agent from CB’s Lakewood office who does indeed work Golden and Arvada and would recognize me as a fellow Realtor.

One thing I already know: everyone is in it for money. The 2.8% buyer commission will now have to be split between Amazon, Cartus, Ojo Labs (the coordinator) and Coldwell Banker or other partner brokerage, leaving less than ever for the agent who gets the lead.

Experienced agents might not participate given how little is left for the agent.

City to draft ballot question on waste hauling plan Plan to include single hauler, flexible pricing for customers

After collecting community input on a plan that would uniformize city waste hauling last spring, the city plans to ask for additional feedback through an advisory ballot question in the fall.

Since 2018, the city has been exploring options to partner with a single trash hauler to serve the waste hauling, recycling and composting needs of all Arvada households that do not belong to an HOA, or households that belong to an HOA that does not oversee waste hauling services.

The city has received proposals from four potential haulers, director Kate Bailey with consultant Eco-Cycle Solutions said.

During their July 22 meeting, council members debated whether to draft a ballot question before negotiating terms with the bidders.

The results of the advisory ballot question would be non-binding, instead serving as a guide for how council should proceed. Councilmembers John Marriott, Mark McGoff and David Jones supported the inclusion of the question, wanting to procure current

data from residents. Councilmembers Dot Miller, Bob Fifer and Nancy Ford opposed the idea, with Miller arguing “we’re elected by our citizens to make the tough decisions.”

Mayor Marc Williams broke the tie, choosing to move forward with the ballot question, which councilmembers will draft this summer.

However, just preparing to draft the question found councilmembers divided as they discussed the specifics of the trash-hauling offer the city will make to its residents.

Councilmembers debated whether to split the city into districts and assign a

different hauler to each district, or to partner with one hauler citywide. While councilmembers hoped for pricing data to aid their decision, Bailey said that no city has collected adequate data on the subject, leading to some uncertainty of how residents would be affected by a single hauler.

While a shift to a single hauler could see some residents pay less than what they are paying now, others will likely pay more, Bailey said. However, all residents will have access to additional services, such as recycling and composting, she said.

“We’ve heard from other commu-

nities that there’s a little more staff management on (the district method) side of things,” Bailey said, adding that this could make the effort slightly more expensive for the city.

Councilmembers favored the citywide option, despite Marriott and Fifer supporting a districts approach, with Fifer questioning what the city would fall back on if the single hauler went out of business.

The council also approved of a volume-based pricing approach, which would allow residents to choose from a 32-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon trash cart. City staff had recommended this option, with Bailey praising it for being “a proven strategy nationwide to help increase recycling, and it also allows residents to have a little more control over their costs.”

The majority of council further approved the city managing the billing process and adding the waste-hauling bill to the water bill residents already receive. Marriott and Williams believed the hauler should be responsible for billing.

“I don’t know why we would want to have the city be the cop for the hauler for no reason,” Marriott said, though he added that tacking the cost onto the water bill would be “quite a good encouragement to pay.”

The city plans to hold a public hearing on the subject at a later date and will draft the advisory ballot question in August.

Some had hoped construction on the Indiana Street and 72nd Avenue intersection had finished when 72nd opened back up near the beginning of 2019. Others looked to May, the construction’s scheduled completion date, for the end of the project and return to normal traffic flow.

But with a subdivision, a water vault and a series of rainstorms shifting the schedule behind the scenes, the city soon found itself pushing back the end of the project — and fielding a good number of questions and comments from residents in the area.

“We did a lot of communication, but what we did not do was talk about the complexities of each of the things that was causing the delays,” said Arvada’s Communications Coordinator Cindy Javelet.

City officials began brainstorming the $7 million intersection project in 2013 to improve certain aspects of the intersection, including safety and capacity. Construction began in 2018.

As part of the Indiana Street and 72nd Avenue intersection project, construction crews work on the bridge over Croke Canal at 72nd Avenue in November 2018. The city chose to demolish the bridge and replace it with a box culvert to improve traffic flow.

“I’ve been here (in Arvada) a long time, and this is one of the most dangerous intersections,” said Cliff Deeds, the city’s assistant to the utilities director.

The project has been funded through

the city’s capital improvement project fund and was originally scheduled to be completed in May, despite misinformation leading some to believe the project was over in the winter, when the city reopened 72nd Avenue.

But months of delays and the need to communicate with more than 20 contractors and stakeholders have shifted the end of the schedule to late August, the project manager Shane Hoerig said.

The first notable obstacle was the need to fit new utility lines, including a new water line, around lines that already exist beneath the intersection.

The city had to adjust its plan for the new water line, which was intended to run near a water vault built more than 50 years ago. Because of a lack of records on the water vault’s size, Hoerig believed the vault was smaller than it actually is.

Ultimately, Hoerig shifted the path of the line to accommodate the vault and a “spaghetti bowl” of utility lines beneath the intersection, Deeds said.

Locals eager to speak out as Jefferson Parkway plans progress On all sides of debate, community members get involved

W

hen Arvada resident Brett Vernon learned the Jefferson Parkway project was moving forward, he began to learn as much as he could about the incoming road. The parkway, a roughly 10-mile toll road that would run southwest to northeast between state highways 93 and 128, will divide Vernon’s neighborhood of Leyden Rock in two.

Map of the proposed highway in hand, Vernon set out to learn just how far the road’s edge would sit from nearby houses. After positioning himself at the center of the road’s 300-footwide right-of-way, Vernon paced his way to what will be the edge of the road, and then to the houses. His findings: many of the houses would be 65 yards away from the road.

“I wanted to have some kind of input into how this parkway was going to go through our neighborhood,” he said.

Vernon, who moved into the small community near Highway 93 west of Arvada in late 2014, became involved with the project as a member of the Jefferson Parkway Advisory Committee (JPAC), a citizen committee to make recommendations for the highway, and a Leyden Rock community group called Neighbors of the Parkway.

The organizations serve as two of many groups that regularly communicate with the Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) and Arvada, Broomfield and Jefferson County leaders, hoping to determine the parkway’s future. From group to group, the answer on what that future should look like varies — with some praising the road’s potential to accelerate development, some criticizing it for safety and financial reasons and some caught in the middle.

“Neighbors of the Parkway wasn’t going to oppose it,” Vernon said. “That doesn’t mean we think it’s a great idea, but opposing it would be muddying our message of ‘we can build this right.’”

Residents make recommendations Vernon, along with Ian Owens, Chris Woodley and other Leyden Rock residents, formed Neighbors of the Parkway to keep residents informed of parkway progress and ensure the community’s voice is heard throughout the project.

Vernon and his fellow members of the JPAC — which was created by the parkway authority to collect community input on the project — say they have made several recommendations about the project’s design.

“I became very much opposed to the concept,” Staniszewski said. “This affects a lot of people, and it’s an action the people will have no choice in.”

Through his group, Stanislavsky keeps people informed about the road as they seek to put a stop to the project. He cited several reasons for his opposition, including concerns the project will stir up carcinogenic waste buried at the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons site, just north of the Candelas and Leyden Rock areas.

Despite the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s statements that construction of projects like the parkway, which will skirt the eastern side of Rocky Flats, will not pose a public health risk, many residents and community organizations, such as the Rocky Flats Downwinders and Rocky Flats Right To Know, share in Staniszewski’s apprehensions that nearby residents will inhale potentially cancerous particles while the project is underway.

“There will be plutonium in that dust, and people will breathe it in,” claims Bonnie Graham-Reed, who has lived in Arvada for 40 years and cofounded Rocky Flats Right To Know.

“This will be the biggest health impact on Arvadans since the plant was in operation. Why can’t we care about the precautionary principle and not build this highway?”

COMMUNITY MEMBER CONCERNS The Movement to Stop Jefferson Parkway, a community group, lists six key reasons that members do not support the parkway.

When Staniszewski moved to his home in 2017, he was told by the homeowners the parkway would not be built, he said. Later learning the project would move forward, he went to a city council meeting to question why more had not been done to ensure incoming homeowners knew about the project. Staniszewski said the city never addressed this complaint.

“Folks will say ‘you should have known better,’” he said, “but it’s not a question of whether you knew or didn’t know. It’s a question of if you would want to be treated that way.”

Despite feeling like the city hasn’t been responsive, Staniszewski said the parkway authority itself has answered the more than 70 questions he has asked.

Debate continues JPPHA chair and Arvada city council member David Jones said the city and the authority have worked to honor the community’s perspectives, including through the authority’s formation of JPAC. “Rightly so, these neighbors are concerned,” he said, “and we have tried to work with them and understand all of those concerns.”

Jones has heard from a good number of citizens who will be affected by the new road, each with their own reasons for support or opposition.

Many supporters look to the economic gains specified in 2017’s Jefferson Parkway Economic Impact Study, produced by the JPPHA and Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation and prepared by independent consultant Development Research Partners.

The study found the road would yield an economic benefit — which includes “construction activity, business, employees, and resident spending at study sites,” it said — of around $8.4 billion between 2018 and 2037. This includes a net fiscal benefit, which measures government revenues after government expenditures, of nearly $138 million.

More detailed parkway plans will

The parkway willl not achieve city and county goals. The road will not complete the Denver Metro Beltway, ending miles away from C-470 on one end and miles from the Northwest Parkway on the other. Further, the road will not improve traffic flow, as it will add a traffic light on Highway 93 and direct traffic onto Highway 128.

The parkway poses a health and safety risk to residents. The road will create noise and light pollution and could pose other eventually be available to the public on jppha.org, said authority communications manager Sheryl Machado.

“We anticipate a release later this summer,” she said.

As the process continues, all sides said they planned to keep working toward their very different goals.

For the Movement to Stop Jefferson Parkway group, this means volunteering with city council campaigns for those opposed to the parkway, Staniszewski said. The group is also considering taking legal action, especially surrounding the potential danger of Rocky Flats waste, to stop the construction, he said.

“We speak out,” he said. “As long as there’s someone speaking out, the opposition will continue.”

First JeffCo homeless count to inform services, policy County seeks volunteers to conduct survey of homeless this August STAFF REPORT

With plans to oversee its first Comprehensive Homeless Count in August, Jefferson County is seeking volunteers to conduct surveys at different locations throughout the county.

The count will survey for a broader number of homeless or low-income

experiences than the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 24-hour Point-in-Time count does, the county said. The HUD count occurs every year in January and requires communities to determine the number of individuals living shelters in the area.

The August count, run by Jefferson County in partnership with several municipalities, will “paint the full picture of what homelessness looks like in a suburban community where services are scattered and sometimes nonexistent,” the county webpage said.

The results will inform future county decisions around services and policies to prevent homelessness.

Volunteers will visit specified areas in the county to conduct five-minute surveys with individuals experiencing homelessness. Surveying will run from Aug. 19 through 23, with individuals traveling in groups of other volunteers and law enforcement personnel, the webpage said.

A restored Apollo 16 test capsule was unveiled by Special Aerospace Services LLC in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing.

The restored spacecraft will be displayed permanently at the company’s

Flight Factory in Arvada, where engineering design work for future lunar missions is now underway.

“The Apollo program endures as a milestone in engineering achievement,” Heather Bulk, Special Aerospace Services CEO and co-founder, said in a news release. “Putting this historic capsule on display in Arvada spotlights Colorado’s vibrant aerospace ecosystem which is playing critical roles in new space programs destined to take us to the Moon and beyond.”

“SAS is a great corporate citizen that has not only brought jobs and economic development to Arvada but has now brought this historic Apollo artifact to our community,” Williams said in the release.

NASA built the Apollo 16 test capsule to train U.S. Navy personnel tasked with recovering the command module and its astronaut crew after splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Launched on April 16, 1972, Apollo 16 was the fifth, and penultimate, U.S. mission to reach the lunar surface.

hen Chopin — one of my favorites — died, he began to decompose.

No one is born with a sense of humor, and you can’t order one online. Some people are funny and some people aren’t.

Some people who think they are funny, aren’t.

One of my sister’s husbands thought he was funny. Being around him was painful. I had to bite my tongue.

His jokes about German sausages were the wurst.

He said he worked at a bakery because he “kneaded the dough.”

This isn’t going to get any better. My friend Barb Dwyer sent me a bunch of puns, and now that I am through groaning, I thought I would pass them

on to you.

There is no such thing as a “funny bone.” Your upper arm bone, however, is called the “humerus,” a homophone of “humorous.”

But tibia honest with you, I know a skeleton who can predict bad weather.

He can feel it in his bones.

I wrote something for the stage about puns. It’s a play on words.

I just found out I’m colorblind. The news came out of the purple.

I went to see the doctor because I thought I was invisible. The nurse came out and told me, “The doctor can’t see you know.”

On the way out of the clinic, I heard two doctors joking about sutures.

They had each other in stitches.

I know sign language. Sometimes it comes in pretty handy.

Some perspective on all this Advanced Placement

A LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Incivility all over Dear editor, as I wrote you on the 11th to Mr. Alcorn’s civility editorial and as Mr. Cox’s accusatory letter printed on the 25th point out.Our community’s incivility and hatred actions have a history here in Jefferson County. Also as I wrote, I didn’t say Mr. Alcorn was making “excuses” for our country’s elected leader but it was this community and those like it that teach public incivility to all our children and adults in what is said and done.The world of U.S .politics and mass media are other worthy contributors to present unsocial actions and behaviors.

I would like to thank you both for making it clear that incivility in dialogues, especially name calling without “guilty convictions” or in blaming others we don’t like or approve of has become the norm and excepted. I believe our “community standards,”

all we say and do, shouldn’t be a call for more emboldened or aggressive actions and behaviors. Approaches to our governing and to those who chose to serve us all should be appreciative or respectful. Representative words, behaviors and actions illustrated in civility today for others, could be repeated in public by others to follow as good examples. Instead of the uncivil racial hatred based messages both the mass progressive media and current Democrat Party promote.

Please all keep in mind some of our greatest presidents were thought by popular people in USA society to be ruinous for our country; i.e., Martha Washington’s public spoken hatred for Thomas Jefferson.

h, August 1st. That little turn of the calendar brings out so many emotions.

Sports fans recognize the dawning of a new football season, and the (in some places far from here) pennant chase part of the baseball season. Outdoorsy people recognize the HITTING shortening of the days as the beauti- HOME ful season of autumn approaches.

Car people can’t wait for the new model year to show itself. All the teachers in the community are just opening up their “welcome back” letters, as parents Michael Alcorn are preparing their end-of-summer celebrations and children are starting to work out their early excuses to be sick.

But, somewhere in this mix, are also students furiously digging through their homework packets from last May, trying to figure out what they should have been doing to prepare for their Advanced Placement (AP) courses for this year.

Why? Because they’ve been told and

sold the belief that AP classes will get them into the best schools and get them college credits and make them stand out from their peers.

And then I see this: a parent in North Carolina is taking her child on a tour of Duke University, widely considered a “Top School,” perhaps just below the Ivy League. The presentation starts with an admissions director, who tells the parent group, “Please don’t take every AP class your school offers. That won’t help you get in Duke. Make sure you participate in music at your school, or play a sport, or show leadership. We want wellrounded human beings here.”

This seems like it should be a nobrainer, but we’ve lost it along the way somewhere. I took AP classes — two of them. I even earned partial college credit, which, it turns out, made exactly zero difference in my college career. C And, there are cases where taking AP seems obvious: if you want to be in APp Calculus as a senior, you pretty much r have to be in the advanced placement t classes all along the way in math. But, n there are now schools who offer more g than 20 AP classes for their students to take, starting as early as the freshman n s year.

Marketing fruits and veggies to kids

um. Here are some fruits and vegetables,” says adult to child.

Young child’s mouth is sealed shut. “Let’s eat some salsa you helped chop up! Yummy!” Magically the mouth may open up with a smile. Not convinced? Give salsa a whirl.

Sometimes when families are encouraging small children to eat fruits and vegetables amiably we need a new approach. There are three nutritionists’ suggestions to follow: make the pieces small, thick salsa style; include children in the preparation; omit the spice or onions in the salsa.

Versatile Salsa Salsa is sauce in Spanish which means it can go on something to add interest and flavor, but young children like it as a stand- alone, as well as, on top of something.

Fruit salsa is generally an easy choice for young children. Make sure the children are standing on a sturdy surface and LIFELONG use plastic or table knives for chopping.

Instead, encourage them to sing, or act, or play sports, or do student government. They’ll learn more about themselves there, so they’ll make smarter choices as an 18-year old, and — at the same time — make themselves more attractive to great schools, if that’s the direction they go in.

Advanced Placement is good; too much of it is nothing more than an ego thing — for students, for parents, and you better believe also for schools.

And that’s not a good place to be making decisions from.

Think about that: you’re a 14-year old taking a class that has implications for the rest of your life. Sometimes, two or three such classes. At some schools, the Freshman level AP classes are considered the hardest classes in the school.

Hey, I think I have an idea why so many kids have clinical anxiety!

And, even if you do great as a freshman, get a good score on the test, have it count in whatever way it counts towards college credits … will it really help you in college? Will *anything* you did as a 14-year old stay in your brain long enough to be useful in college? Or, God forbid, the “real world?”

Parents, relax. In the next few days, you will be registering your kids for high school, and there’s going to be a temptation to “track” them right away into as much Advanced work as you can. Stop it. High school is a huge adjustment, and we don’t need to com-

Older children or adults can cut the larger fruit into peeled pieces and younger children, the ones we want to convince, can cut the larger pieces into small ½ inch squares.

Mix the juice of half or less of a lemon and 1 Tablespoon of strawberry jam together and stir into the fruit.

The salsa can be served with buttered toast or an English muffin or a side of Cheerios.

If you have time, make some cinnamon tortilla chips in the oven. Set the oven at 375 degrees. Butter the tortillas and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon and sugar. Place on a cookie sheet and use a pizza cutter to cut into triangles or squares. Bake in the oven for about 8 minutes or until they are light brown. When cooled, children can spoon salsa onto the chips.

the salsa making into a cooking show by recording on your phone.

Not So Spicy Vegetable salsa is a little trickier because young children may not like the texture or taste of vegetables yet, but it is worth a try. Start with very small tender zucchini, black beans, cooked corn, shaved carrots cut into tiny squares, and tiny pieces of chopped lettuce. Add a little salt and eat with toast or homemade tortillas with no cinnamon. If the vegetables need to be a bit softer sprinkle with water and put the mixture in the microwave for a few seconds. Tomatoes, onions, and peppers are often a problem so that probably knocks out tomato salsa for a while.

Preparing for a fall and winter on the stage

Hit the trails Beyond the back yard, Colorado provides all sorts of edible goodies, said Blake Burger, a horticulturist with the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Spruce tree tips are high in vitamin C, Burger said, and make a tasty tea, or an addition to herb butters or marinades for fish and chicken.

Currant berries are plentiful in the region, Burger said, and make delicious syrups and jams.

Rose hips, the pink or red seedpods left behind after the flower dies, are also high in vitamin C and make a distinctive sour, floral tea.

With all these cultural institutions rolling out their line-ups, metro area audiences are going to be swimming in high quality ways to spend an evening.

For music lovers there are options in all manner of genres - the Lone Tree Arts Center will be hosting “Night in Memphis: Presley, Perkins, Lewis, and Cash” in October, while jazz fans will find a bevy of choices, including The Lao Tizer Quartet featuring Nelson Rangell in April at the Lakewood Cultural Center. And well-known pop performers like Melissa Etheridge and Jackie Evancho will be swinging by Parker.

A quick glance at the line-ups of local stages reveal a treasuretrove of classic and contemporary works.

For example, Miners Alley will stage a production of Arthur Miller’s masterwork, “The Crucible” in June, the Town Hall Arts Center will be hosting “Little Shop of Horrors” and the Arvada Center will be producing the Bard’s “A Midsummer’s Nights Dream.”

ost people would look at a backyard filled with weeds and see a problem. Kate Armstrong sees a feast.

Armstrong is an urban forager — someone versed in wild edible and medicinal plants of the urban environment. She leads nature walks and seminars that teach people a new way to look at the plants in their midst.

“People are astonished when they find out how much food is all around us,” Armstrong said. “Nature isn’t here to hurt us, it’s here to give us everything we need.”

Indeed, in the course of a short stroll through a Lakewood back yard, Armstrong pointed out dozens of plants growing in sidewalk cracks or along fences with uses ranging from salad greens to treating toothache.

There are very few toxic plants in our region, Armstrong said. Most plants are technically edible, it’s just that most don’t taste very good.

For novice foragers, though, Armstrong recommends a few highly common — and highly tasty — plants that abound throughout the

There’s purslane, a low-growing weed with thick leaves and meaty stems, which can be eaten raw in a salad, fried in stir-fry, used as a soup thickener, or pickled.

Also abundant is mallow, a roundleafed weed that also makes a good snack when eaten raw, but also provides chewy seedpods that Armstrong calls “cheeses.” The stems can be roasted and eaten like pretzel sticks, she said, and the bigger leaves can be used as mini-serving trays for hors d’oeuvres.

Lamb’s quarter grows in moist, disturbed soil, and produces leaves with a mild, lettuce-like taste. A single lamb’s quarter plant can provide months of salad greens by snipping off tender young leaves, Armstrong said.

Dandelion greens are best eaten raw, Armstrong said, and are excellent for detoxing the body.

Even bindweed, the bane of so many gardeners and lawn lovers, produces tiny white flowers with a delicate, floral taste that make an elegant garnish in a salad, Armstrong said.

strong said. One is hemlock, which grows in moist soil and produces spindly, wispy leaves that are hard to tell apart from carrot tops. The other is death camas, which looks similar to wild onion or wild garlic, but doesn’t have their characteristic savory odor.

A more common problem, Armstrong said, is herbicides and pesticides. Urban foragers should try to ensure that the place they’re gathering from hasn’t been sprayed to keep weeds and bugs down, she said.

That’s easy in your own back yard, but when foraging along roadsides or other wilder places, a key is to watch out for areas with monocultures — where only one type of plant is abundant. That’s often a sign that sprays are in use.

The safest bet, Armstrong said, is to let your own yard go wild, which will also help it become a haven for pollinators and other wildlife.

“This can be a really fun hobby, and a great way to reconnect with nature,” Armstrong said. “And, who knows? If push comes to shove, it’s knowledge that could come in handy.”

By Sally Griffin In its founding years, the Wheat Ridge area was known locally for, of course, ridges of wheat. The wheat farms supplied grain to the many mining camps located just west of us. Later, Wheat Ridge became known nationally as the “Carnation City.” Carnations need ample sunlight in order to grow well. Wheat Ridge supplied that in abundance and became the chosen location for the greenhouses growing the flowers.

In the 1960s the city had 32 different carnation growers and sent flowers to the White House every Monday morning. The bouquet was then displayed in the front foyer with card a indicating it was a gift from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, the Carnation City. As a child, I remember the wonderful cinnamon scent of some of the carnations grown in Wheat Ridge.

The city of Wheat Ridge was incorporated officially in 1969. On the first anniversary of that incorporation, the designation as Carnation City encouraged local groups to organize a celebration, which was intended to honor the agricultural aspects of the city’s history, highlighting the growing of carnations. Thus, the yearly event, the Carnation Festival, was born. The parade associated with the festival once featured floats decorated almost entirely with carnations from local growers. The greenhouses are now gone, (The last carnation grower phased out their operation in 2008), but this connection to the past remains.

The Wheat Ridge Carnival Festival is nearing the halfcentury mark. The event has changed and grown but remains volunteer-based and family-friendly. The festival is a long-time supporter of local nonprofits, service clubs, and student and senior organizations. After the costs of the festival are paid, monies go to these local entities.

One of the longest running festivals in Colorado, the Wheat Ridge Carnival Festival is a wonderful mix of traditional county fair and modern beer and music festivals delivered over three days to as many as 30,000 visitors. According to organizers, “Every August in Wheat Ridge, there is a community shindig for a few thousand of the city’s closest friends.” The festival was previously held at a several different sites until finding its present home at Anderson Park. 4355 Field St. The first Carnation Festival was held on the grounds of Wheat Ridge Junior High School (now Stevens Elementary).

The school and the nearby Grange Hall were the location of the Flower Show, the Hobby Show, vendor booths, and the Pancake Supper. Events on Thursday night included the Talent Show, Square Dancing and the crowning of Carnation Queen. Friday had events like the Pet Show, the Kiddie & Pet Parade, and the Afghan Hound Racing demonstration.

Friday night ended with a concert and dancing. Saturday morning opened with the parade and its carnation floats.

The day continued with a Westernaires Show, Firemen’s Competition, Pancake Supper and awards presentation.

It ended with music and other entertainment lasting until midnight.

Over the last 49 years, there have been many changes: from the types of events, the variety of entertainment, the parade participants, and the various locations in the city.

It has featured lots of dancing, including the Red Boots Folk Ensemble, Fiesta Alegre Spanish and Mexican Dancers, Polish Youth Club Dancers and the Bailesartes Mexican Dancers among others. The festival has gone from a threeday event to a two-day event and back to a three-day event.

At one point, they even tried calling it by a different name but the intent remains: to be a family-friendly celebration that brings the community together.

One thing has stayed the same every year: kids and their parents eagerly gather around 38th Avenue looking for their favorite spot to see the parade. (The parade remains on 38th Avenue, after a short hiatus on 44th Avenue.) From 9 a.m. to noon parade entries come from community groups, service groups, community-building organizations, local Boy and Girl Scout troops, Wheat Ridge-based businesses, churches, special-interest groups and others wanting to celebrate their hometown: Wheat Ridge.

Individuals who have made significant contributions or had an impact in Wheat Ridge are recognized as the Carnation Festival Grand Marshal, Count, and Countess. These three individuals lead the parade, then decide the parade winners for each category. The first Carnation Queen was Jacque Ferguson. The first Count and Countess were Gary Wardle and Barbara Davis.

The directors of the first festival were Zebulon M. Pike Jr., William R. Cornelison, Frank Stites, Marie Engelman, and John Harper. For a few years, the Festival was run by the Wheat Ridge Chamber of Commerce, then turned over to an all-volunteer board. Today the Wheat Ridge Carnation operates as a 501(c)(3) with a non-profit board of directors.

The current board includes Festival Chair Joe Demott, ViceChair Walt Petit, Dave Petit, Chris Miller, Ruth Baranowski, Cyndy Beal, Rob Benson, Tim Berland, Dominick Breton, Leah Dozeman, Theresa Joyce, Joe Seehusen, Emily Smith and Renee Schreiner.

According to the Carnation Festival website, “Like the City, the Festival has seen its fair share of hiccups, disasters, rain-outs and tragedy, but it has never stopped growing. It has never stopped trying to be the best it can possibly be and it has never stopped being what it is – The Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival.”

What a fitting celebration of the city and the lovely flower that was immortalized in a charming poem by Theodore Roethke. This is an excerpt from the poem, “Carnations”: Pale blossoms, each balanced on a single jointed stem, The leaves curled back in elaborate Corinthian scrolls…

Car Show Comes Roaring Back, August 11, 9am-3pm

Classic car owners and enthusiasts are tuning up for the 2019 Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival because this year the Wheat Ridge High School Farmers Football program and the WR Quarterback Club are partnering with the Carnation Festival for the second time to present the “Big Wheels on the Farm” car show fundraiser.

The beautiful vehicles will roll in (loudly) on Sunday, August 11th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Anderson Park (44th and Field St.). The display will showcase decades worth of American muscle, hotrods, exotics, classics and vintage vehicles--all parked in the grassy area in the heart of festivities, surrounded by food trucks, vendors, the main stage and more. It’s a perfect combination for a day of family fun, while helping raise money for the high school football team. (Registration fees support the program.)

There will be plenty to gawk over during contests among the different car classifications. To maintain the festival’s community spirit, the judging will be done by Wheat Ridge Community Service members. Custom-made trophies will be awarded in multiple categories including one for each car class, and a Best of Show award.

There are 10 blood relatives of the ,Zoppé family among the 54 individuals who make up the company coming lto Wheat Ridge. , “We are the classic circus in America today,” said Giovanni Zoppé, who runs the thrilling show. “We’re a complete circus, but we are what a circus was in the 1800s. That includes the costumes, music, and style of show. rEverything we do takes you back to the 1800s.”

- Zoppé likens the circus to Christmas. Just as Christmas comes every year, with different presents under the tree, the Zoppé Circus also comes every eyear and brings different acts. Zoppé says this will be the freshest show sthey’ve performed in the past 10 years.

Among the new acts is a bareback-riding performance by Zoppé’s sister Tosca, who has been an amazing bareback rider since she was young. ,She will re-create their father’s classic bareback riding act. Another new act dfeatures four-to-five horses abreast, with a human pyramid of six-to-eight people atop them. o The circus will also introduce an act this year that features a bicyclist riding naround a large bowl-shaped apparatus. The equipment is 15 feet at the top .and 10 feet at the bottom. As the bicyclist rides, the bowl goes up about 35 feet and continues to move. The “bowl” has a large hole in the middle of the ,bottom. Zoppé explains that this riveting act, which is 120 years old, has not ,been performed in at least 65 years. He felt it was time to introduce the act hto modern-day circus-goers.

Admission to the general Carnation Festival is free, as is entry to a variety ,of concerts. Tickets for each circus performance are $18 for general admis,sion (bleacher seating), $30 for VIP (chair seating) and free for children two tand under. The shows sell out quickly, so it’s a good idea to purchase your tickets before August 8.

A traditional Spaghetti Dinner will be served both nights, August 9th and 10th. The dinner is the longest-lived event of the festival and is so big that it has its own tent. It will be served 4–8 pm in the food court area, which is near the Beer Garden, so the two most popular food treats will be next to each other. (If you have any German heritage, you know that beer is considered a food for adults and is almost as necessary as bread.) The dinner benefits the Colorado Professional Firefighters Foundation, and two dozen volunteers from West Metro Fire Rescue will work in shifts to feed the crowds.

The Beer Garden, despite the name, will not be limited to beer and will offer a wide variety of beverages for the entire family. There are two locations: one near the Main Stage and one in the center of the Food Court. Beer (aka liquid bread) and wine will be available. The Wheat Ridge Rotary Club has teamed up with Budweiser and Breckenridge Brewery to offer a great selection. Craft beers and wine will be available for $6 each, with Bud and Bud Lite for $5. Water and soft drinks will be available for $1 each. This is the only major fundraising event for the Rotary Club each year. Funds raised at the festival will remain in the community by way of scholarships and funds for local non-profit organizations.

On August 10th the 10th annual Chili Cook-off will be held in the spaghetti din-

ner tent from 12-3pm. If you have never been to a chili cook-off, you are in for a tasty and heated treat. There will be trophies and prizes for the top three cooks in both the red and the green categories, with one overall People’s Choice prize.

Public tasting is five dollars ($5). Children younger than six are free. This charity event is sponsored by Wheat Ridge Poultry and tasting fees will benefit the Wheat Ridge Community Foundation.

Another great Wheat Ridge tradition is the Pancake Breakfast held on Saturday morning before the Carnation Festival parade. The breakfast, 7-9 am, includes ham, eggs, pancakes, coffee and juice. There is no cost but a $6 donation per person is always welcome and greatly appreciated. The breakfast is a chance to meet and greet neighbors at the Wheat Ridge Grange Hall. It is also the perfect time to view a fine historical building while filling up on carbs that will sustain you throughout the parade. Funds raised from the breakfast will help the Wheat Ridge Grange continue the exceptional work that it does with youth in the community.

To polish off the day, check out the 2nd annual Pie Contest. Last year, competitors ranged from 16 to 90 years of age and all the pies were sweet/fruit pies. This year, there will be two categories: sweet and savory, and extra judges have been invited to participate. Bring pies to the food court main tent on Friday, August 9th from 3-4 pm. The public is invited to bid on the pies after the judging is complete.

Carnival and Fireworks Bigger and Better for 50th Anniversary This year’s Carnation Festival carnival, August 9-11, will spread across the south side of newly renovated Anderson Park, 4355 Field St., and will have more carnival games and rides than ever. Of course, there will be endless concessions, with funnel cakes, corn dogs, cotton candy and other classic carnival foods.

Carnival rides vary from $1 to $5, but an unlimited daily pass is available for $20. Parents always enjoy watching children rush onto a ride and climb off laughing. If the next words they hear are “Can we go again? Please, please?”, purchasing a wristband allowing a day of endless rides might be a great choice.

A variety of new carnival rides will be offered this year. Volunteers from Family Tree and board members of the Lutheran Hospital & Foundation will provide and run free bouncy castles. (Donations gladly accepted!) Local food vendors – many repeat favor-

ites – will return.

The fireworks show will be bigger and better in celebration of the 50th anniversary. On both Friday and Saturday night at 9:15 p.m., two graduates of Wheat Ridge High School will orchestrate the amazing show. Two days before the festival, Steve Shriber

and Jeff Hendricks of Firestorm Pyrotechnics will bring the fireworks over Loveland Pass. (because a semi-truck full of fireworks isn’t allowed through the tunnel.) When Shriber was growing up in Wheat Ridge, he loved every fireworks show. Eventually, he began saving his money and driving to Wyoming to buy fireworks – a lot of fireworks. He then returned to Wheat Ridge and sold fireworks to his friends.

After years in school and in the aerospace industry, Shriber and Hendricks began Firestorm Pyrotechnics in Springville, Utah. Firestorm Pyrotechnics produces choreographed shows combining music and fireworks. The timing and matching of music and multifaceted fireworks displays are what draws the ooohs and aaahs at every show.

Carnation Festival Royalty 2019

By Cyndy Beal Every summer the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival chooses a royal court of three to honor those in the community who have made a positive contribution through their participation or service in the city.

Courtly duties include riding in the parade on Saturday morning, festival award presentations Saturday evening, and wearing a sash with personal pizzazz, among others.

The 2019 Royal Court (drum roll): Countess – Diane Robb Count – Jeff Gomez Grand Marshal – Joe DeMott

Countess – Diane Robb

Diane Robb is the Wheat Ridge Cultural Commission chairwoman.

The cultural commission promotes arts in many areas through education, events and programs in Wheat Ridge.

She has led and been the face of the cultural commission for nine years.

Robb is an active member in the community and in her church. She is the chair of the annual gala for the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic STEM School.

She grew up in Colorado after her family moved to Boulder from Minnesota when she was a small child. She graduated from Boulder High School, where she met her husband, Kevin.

They have been married 44 years and have one daughter.

She is the co-managing partner for Kevin Robb Studios.

Kevin’s contemporary metal sculpture is nationally and internationally recognized.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Business from Regis University and a Masters of Healthcare Systems from the University of Denver.

“I am extremely honored,” she said.

Count – Jeff Gomez

Jeff Gomez, former principal of Everitt Middle School, retired this year after eight years of service.

He worked in the Jefferson County School District for 31 years as a teacher, a principal in Wheat Ridge, and in the district’s human resources department. He is a North Denver native and graduated from North High School.

He entered college as a working student, with a family to support. After graduating from Metropolitan State College with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education, his first teaching job in 1988 was at Stevens Elementary, teaching fifth and six grades.

He has a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado and has been the principal at Peak (formerly Pennington) and Wilmore-Davis Elementary Schools.

He has three daughters and two grandsons.

“I want to thank everyone in Wheat Ridge for the opportunities I’ve been given, and the experiences in Wheat Ridge schools,” he said.

Local Artists will Shine at the Art League Fine Art Show The Wheat Ridge Art League Fine Art Show will be on display during the Carnation Festival in the newly remodeled Anderson Building at Anderson Park, 4355 Field St. Friday, Aug. 9, 4-9 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 10, noon-9 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 11, noon-4 p.m.

Thirty-three members of the Wheat Ridge Art League will be exhibiting their best pieces. It’s all there this year-watercolors, oils, pastels, charcoal and pencil--and many, though not all, works of art will be for sale at affordable prices that make it easy for a beginning collector to acquire their first piece, and hard for a seasoned connoisseur to resist another purchase.

“The show this year will be bigger than ever--a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Festival!,” said Theresa Joyce, Chairwoman of the Art Show.

The art show is not a juried event but rather a membersonly show. The Art League, organized in 1974 and now in its 45th year, has more than 40 members, most hailing from Jefferson County. Artists pay a nominal $30 annual membership fee and together contribute to fulfilling the purpose of the league, “To pursue the study of the arts, to encourage originality, and to provide members with the opportunity to obtain public recognition.”

The league offers its members a visiting artist demonstration during monthly meetings, in addition to other work-

shops and, of course, the Carnation exhibition.

The Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival serves as the league’s exclusive art show. Throughout the year, member artists may be on exhibit at any one of the seven regular exhibit spaces around Wheat Ridge, Arvada, and the Highlands, including the Arvada Motor Vehicle Department at 6510 Wadsworth and the Wheat Ridge Municipal Building, 7500 W. 29th Ave. The league has commissioned local artist Doug Dawson to judge and present awards to members for their show submissions, from Best in Show to Honorable Mentions, fulfilling the league’s mission to offer its artists, from amateur to professional, the opportunity to earn recognition for their creativity. The public is invited to vote for the “People’s Choice Award” by filling out a ballot after viewing the exhibition.

The Carnation Festival Art League Fine Art Show offers the public the opportunity to experience art and interact with local artists on an intimate level, underscoring the value to the public in obtaining their own original artwork. The League meets at the Wheat Ridge Grange, 3850 High Court on the second Tuesday of each month, lower level, 6:45pm.

Potential new members are encouraged to attend.

Student Garden Bench auction will benefit Wheat Ridge Art Programs The Student Garden Art Bench auction will again be part of the The Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival, August 9-11 in the newly renovated Anderson Park, 4355 Field St. The benches were built and designed by the Career Explore Construction Pathways class at Wheat Ridge High School under the instruction of Jane Johnson. The benches are special in their own right, but Wheat Ridge schools notch them up to the next level. After being coated with a layer of protective paint, the benches are painted by art department students in the Wheat Ridge area.

Volunteers will transport the benches to the festival grounds on Thursday afternoon, arrange them for display and set up bidding sheets. The benches will be displayed in the large tent to the west of the circus tent.

The silent auction bidding will be open on Friday, August 9, 5-8 p.m, and continue Saturday, August 10, noon-11pm.

Winners will be notified on Sunday morning and can pick up their benches any time that day. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the art programs in Wheat Ridge schools.

Grand Marshal – Joseph DeMott

Joe DeMott is a Wheat Ridge native.

He has spent nearly all of his life dedicated to serving the community. Be it either through the city’s needs for pizza at Pietra’s or as a City Council member and hard-working volunteer, he has dished and delivered, serving the small Denver suburb.

DeMott is a Wheat Ridge High School graduate. While in high school, his work career started at 15, working in the family business, Pietra’s Pizza. His community involvement also began as a teenager.

He was a City Council member from 2009 to 2013.

He has chaired the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival Board for six years. Under his leadership the festival has kept its traditions alive and expanded.

He is president of the Wheat Ridge Business District and chair of the Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Bernadette and their son and daughter call Wheat Ridge home.

“I’m just very grateful to be the Grand Marshal for the 50th anniversary. It is quite the honor,” he said.

Grand Parade Celebrates The 50th Anniversary of the Wheat Ridge and the Carnation Festival “Everybody loves a parade” and there have been many beloved and famous parades to celebrate in U.S. history. The top four include the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1762, the first Mardi Gras Parade in 1856, the first Tournament of Roses Parade in 1890 and the inaugural Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924.

First held in 1969 to commemorate the year of our city’s founding, the theme for this year is both the 50th anniversary of the City of Wheat Ridge and the 50th Carnation Festival.

Chaired by District IV City Councilmember Leah Dozeman, the parade functions as one of the most visible ways the city honors service groups; local schools and businesses; the fire and police departments; state and national politicians and political candidates; church groups, and hobby clubs, including those focused on autos, horseback riding, biking, walking, martial arts, cheerleading and dance.

New this year, Wheat Ridge’s first police cruiser, recently restored by Seyfer Automotive, and “Goats on a Float,” courtesy of Five Fridges Farm--sure to be a crowd pleaser.

The parade also honors distinguished residents by selecting a Grand Marshal, Count and Countess, who serve as royalty and ride in the parade. (See Royalty article to read about this year’s court.) Guy Nahmiach and Optimist Ron Benson will be the parade announcers.

Engaging residents in all aspects of the parade is a main goal every year. Community groups and individuals who want to secure one of the 80 maximum spots, need to register at thecarnationfestival.com by Friday, July 26th.

Parade application fees are: $50 for businesses and $150 for politicians and political candidates. A late fee will be charged for applications received after Monday, July 22nd.

On the day of the parade two resident judges will randomly select three attendees from the crowd to help judge the winning entries in the categories of Best Marching Band, Marching Unit, Musical Group, Business, Vehicle and Float, as well as Most Creative and a Community Award.

Commemorative plates, featuring a local artist’s design, will be given to the parade category winners. Parade winners, royalty, the city and the Carnation Festival board will be honored at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday, August 10th.

The parade runs Saturday morning, 9:30-11:30 am and will include fan favorites the Westernaires and the El Jebel Shriners. With staging from Ames to Depew Streets, the parade route continues to Upham Street along West 38th Avenue. Dominick Breton and the Grange board will serve a $7-donation Pancake Breakfast at The Grange, 7-9 am.

Parking is available in front of Wheat Ridge Cyclery, at Stevens Elementary and along the side streets of the parade route. The Festival Board welcomes everyone in the community and surrounding neighborhoods to join in the celebration of Wheat Ridge.

It’s important to harvest wild edibles ethically and consciously, Burger said. As a rule of thumb, try not to gather more than 10% from a single plant, or from a patch of plants.

Interest in wild edible plants is growing, Burger said. He leads the Denver Botanic Gardens’ new herbalism certificate program, which covers how to use a variety of wild and cultivated plants for health and medicine.

Burger, like Armstrong, is tied into the flourishing community of urban foragers in the Denver area. There’s a lot of activity in the subculture these days, Burger said, with classes around the metro area filling up quickly.

“I think people are starting to experience a shift in their vision, and are realizing natural is the way to go,” Burger said.

“We’re starting to move past our diets of overly processed foods. It’s empowering to feed yourself or heal yourself from things in your landscape. These are things our ancestors knew, and they still work today.”

Do it right While Burger and Armstrong said the best place to forage is on land you or someone you know owns, so you can be sure

of herbicide use, it’s possible to forage in other environs.

There’s no specific rule against gathering wild edibles in most of the parks in the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District, said Skot Latona, who manages South Platte Park in Littleton. It’s against the rules to gather in South Platte Park itself, though.

While gathering a few berries or leaves isn’t going to get you busted, Latona said, “the behavior would be judged on observed damage to park property. Don’t go digging up roots, disturbing soil or removing entire species.”

Wild edibles are everywhere in South Suburban properties, said Victoria Sutton, an interpreter at South Platte Park, including wild asparagus, chokecherries and wild plums.

But, she said, consider your impact on your fellow animals when you forage, Sutton said.

“It’s fun to take a nibble here and there, but those plants can be a matter of life and death for wildlife in our area,” Sutton said. “Don’t go hauling basketfuls of material out of parks.”

Even for those not hitting the trails, there should be lots to munch on this year in back yards alone, Burger said.

“It was a wet spring, and plants are delayed in their growth, but strong” Burger said. “If you’re going to get into urban foraging, this is a good year for it.”

Jeffco Schools announces decision not to reconstruct Columbine Building could remain for ‘20 years or more’

When Principal Scott Christy learned the school district was considering the demolition and reconstruction of Columbine High School, “I was emotionally torn,” he said.

“I don’t think there’s any other principal in the world who would say, ‘no, I don’t want a new building.’ But this is a place our community is very protective of,” he said.

Having chosen to preserve the building, the district has plans to improve school safety in addition to the current security improvements being funded by bond money.

Jeffco Public Schools and its design team are planning for a perimeter to be built around the campus to lower the number of trespassing incidents, Glass said. He added that the perimeter will aesthetically match the neighborhood architecture.

The district has yet to determine the cost of the project but “it will be more expensive than a lot of fences we build around other schools,” he said.

Finances for the project will be diverted from the district’s capital fund, he said. “This project now rises to the top of our list.”

Construction of the perimeter will likely be incorporated into the schedule for other Columbine renovations, which will begin in the fall and take about 18 months to complete, Glass said.

Christy believes in the upcoming changes to accomplish the community’s original goal of protecting students and staff, he said — not only as a principal, but as a parent, with his son planning to attend the school in 2020.

“I can’t imagine a school being more secure than Columbine. I wouldn’t want him to go anywhere else,” he said.

“It’s a special place.”

Governor names new Colorado Poet Laureate STAFF REPORT

Colorado’s new poet laureate said he plans to widen poetry’s reach by visiting every corner of the state and connecting with people through poetry.

“I believe that my ability to impact and/or shape culture lives most-authentically in my connection to people through art,” Bobby LeFebre said in a news release. “I am invested in cultural change. Poets are always at the forefront of influencing and changing culture, and before we see large-scale social or political change, it is the heart and soul of issues that change first.”

LeFebre was named by Gov. Jared Polis as the new Colorado poet laureate, succeeding Joseph Hutchison.

“Bobby LeFebre has an amazing ability to empower and connect communities through the wisdom of his words; that is why we are confident he will make a fantastic Poet Laureate,” Polis said in the news release. “He embodies the spirit of a ‘Colorado for All’ where everyone is included. I know he will be a strong advocate for the arts and art education as a way to bring us together.”

LeFebre is an award-winning writer, performer, and cultural and social worker with “indigenous roots in the San Luis Valley that predate statehood.”

LeFebre serves as a commissioner for the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs, fellow of the Intercultural

Leadership Institute, and an advisory board member of the Latino Cultural Arts Center and many other cultural organizations, including the Clyfford Still Museum and La Raza.

As a co-founder of Cafe Cultura, he also produces Interfest, an arts and ideas festival “for liberationists to radically engage, boldly express and joyously unify as a community.”

The poet laureate position was created to promote an appreciation of poetry in Colorado and to honor outstanding Colorado poets, the news release said.

The poet laureate serves as an active advocate for poetry, literacy, and literature by participating in readings and other events at schools, libraries, literary festivals and the state Capitol.

The poet laureate will also provide the governor with an annual account of the impact and success of the Colorado poet laureate program and prepare a poem for the opening of the legislative session upon request.

Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book and Colorado Creative Industries jointly support the honorary position, providing a $2,000 honoraria and up to $2,000 in travel expenses related to public presentations for each of the four years of the term.

Two people with ties to the Holocaust will share their experiences in the Littleton area in the first week of August in unrelated events.

On Aug. 6, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at the Aspen Grove shopping center will host a screening of “Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz,” a documentary about the life of the last surviving prosecutor from the Nuremberg Trials, where dozens of Nazi war criminals were tried after World War II. “Ferencz went on to advocate for restitution for Jewish victims of the Holocaust and later for the establishment of the International Criminal Court,” according to a news release.

“His fight for justice for victims of atrocity crimes continues today.”

A post-film discussion will feature Sara Moses, a survivor of Nazi concentration camps who now lives in Denver. Moses will speak about “the importance of speaking out against hatred and bigotry in the world today,” according to the release.

The same week, Holocaust-era survivor Dirk Van Leenen will give a series of talks in the Denver and Littleton areas.

Van Leenen is the author of three books about his family’s experience during World War II, when his parents were members of the Dutch Resistance. Van Leenen helped his father smuggle forged IDs to help Jews es-

Three suspects found guilty in murder of 27-year-old D’Evelyn grad Third suspect’s July trial comes to a close

A Jefferson County jury has found Alicia Elena Valdez guilty of firstdegree murder in the shooting of 27-year-old Andrew Jenicek, a graduate of D’Evelyn Senior High School.

The shooting occurred in April 2018 in Edgewater when Jenicek, on his way to pick up dinner, was shot in the parking lot at 20th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, according to the district attorney’s press release.

Valdez, 21, who was found guilty on July 18, was one of three codefendants in the case, along with 20-year-old Caleb Joseph Vigil and 21-year-old Devon

“It’s no longer as designed, but it will stand the test of time,” he said. “We didn’t sacrifice one drop of quality on the water line, no pun intended.”

The series of snow and rainstorms that hit the area during construction further complicated the project, bringing more moisture than Hoerig and crew members expected.

Drittz Howard. Juries found both men guilty in April. Witnesses gave testimony that the three “acquired a gun (used in the shooting) and planned to use it to make money,” the release said.

Both Vigil and Howard had prior felony convictions according to the Jefferson County DA’s office.

Vigil shot Jenicek while Valdez attempting to rob him, then fled the scene with Howard and Valdez in Valdez’s car, the release said. Jenicek died at the scene.

Two days later, Vigil and Valdez were pulled over. The two were arrested when police Howard found the weapon in

Valdez’s vehicle.

Valdez told officers she had not known the gun was in her car, claiming Vigil and Howard hid the gun from her because her father died to gun violence when she was a teenager.

During Valdez’s trial, the jury watched footage of her interrogation, in which police said her Vigil car had been recorded by surveillance cameras at the scene of Jenicek’s murder. Throughout the interrogation, Valdez repeatedly told officers she didn’t recall the events of the crime and that she and Howard, her boyfriend of one month, were not involved in the incident.

On April 30, a jury found Howard guilty of 18 counts and Vigil guilty of 16 counts related to three incidents:

Jenicek’s murder, an Arvada drive-by shooting and the robbery of a Lakewood cell phone store that occurred after the murder, the release said. The counts included first degree murder and aggravated robbery.

Vigil received a sentence of life in prison plus 118 years and Howard received life in prison plus 279 years.

Howard was sentenced as a habitual criminal.

After a six-day trial and daylong deliberation, Valdez was acquitted of counts related to the Arvada shooting and Lakewood robbery. Valdez’s sentencing has been scheduled for Aug. 23.

Jenicek’s family and D’Evelyn have established a memorial award in Jenicek’s honor to be awarded yearly to a “unique individual who, like Andrew, never fails to fully express themselves.”

As the crew worked on removing the bridge that crosses Croke Canal near the intersection, planning to eventually replace the bridge with a box culvert, the ground below “became very saturated, so it took an extra amount of work and time,” Deeds said.

Yet another roadblock emerged in relation to the incoming Ralston Ridge subdivision located adjacent to the intersection.

The new subdivision has been “something we wanted to work with,” Hoerig said, especially with the subdivision running its sewage system

through the intersection.

The city has waited for the work to be finished before construction crews complete the road so crews will not have to dig up the new road and put the system in underneath, Hoerig said.

When the subdivision had to extend its own timeline because of complications, the city likewise extended its timeline.

To mitigate the effects of these challenges, Deeds said, the city has employed several strategies to try and accelerate the project, such as scheduling to minimize the amount

of time spent waiting on contractors to be available.

From now through August, crews will construct medians, sidewalks and the portion of Indiana Street south of 72nd, according to the city’s webpage. Additionally, crews will install a guardrail and traffic signs and will pave the road, among other tasks, the page said.

“We certainly understand this has had an impact on folks,” Communications Manager Ben Irwin said. “The city’s been able to keep the project moving forward, even when we’ve hit an obstacle.”
