I-70 truck driver case sent to district court Criminal case stems from deadly crash that killed four people

Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, the truck driver accused of causing the deadly April crash at I-70, will stand trial after a Jefferson County judge determined that prosecutors provided a probable cause to send the case to district court.

Aguilera-Mederos is facing 41 charges, including attempted first-degree assault and four counts of vehicular homicide. The incident left Stanley Politano, 69, Doyle Rogel Lazaro Harrison, 61, William Bailey, 67, and Miguel AguileraAngel Lamas Arrellano, 24, dead. Six others Mederos were also left with serious injuries.

The case stems from a fiery, multiple car crash in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at Denver West Parkway on April 25. An affidavit reads that 28 cars were engulfed by a large fire. Aguilera-Mederos, 23, is accused of losing control of a semi-tractor he was driving. Police say he was driving 85 mph when he crashed into stopped vehicles near Colorado Mills Parkway after passing “runaway truck ramp” signs.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 3.

Preliminary hearing waived, arraignment scheduled in ‘chemical bomb’ incident Case in which explosive injured Arvada officer, civilian moves forward

Four defendants in this year’s so-called “chemical bomb” case, in which five suspects allegedly injured an officer with a homemade explosive, waived their preliminary hearing on July 12.

The suspects, an unidentified juvenile and four 19-year-olds — Gavin Dawson, Braiden Ulmer, Isaac Koch and Maxwell McCann — were arrested April 6 and 7 for their suspected involvement in the attack. They face several charges, including assault and Dawson possession of an explosive.

On the morning of April 6, at roughly 12:30 a.m., police received a call about a traffic obstruction where W. 68th Avenue turns into Beech Street.

Officer T. Grahn went to the scene, where he was joined by an individual who had called the department, according to the arrest affidavit. Grahn found Ulmer several traffic signs in a pile on

As Grahn attempted to remove the signs from the road, an individual in a nearby field threw a plastic bottle at Grahn, which was later found to contain brake fluid and pool cleaner, the affidavit said.

The plastic bottle began to release white smoke, and Grahn fainted minutes later. Grahn was taken to a hospital and “diagnosed with sustaining a chlorine gas exposure,” the affidavit said.

Detectives searched the field the next morning, finding a Walmart receipt listing saran wrap, brake fluid and pool cleaner, the affidavit said. Police checked security footage from the nearby Walmart and made the five arrests after the footage showed the suspects purchasing the items.

In interviews with police, Dawson said the group had “set Koch the smoke bombs off in `random places,’” the affidavit said.

Detectives said that when they interviewed McCann, he told them that “from his reading on the internet he felt the gas from the bombs was not very toxic or harmful,” according to the affidavit.

The arraignment for the four adult suspects will be Sept. 16 at McCann 8:30 a.m.

The proposed Colorado Coalition for the Homeless project to develop 59 acres of land near the Federal Center in Lakewood into a facility to assist homeless people was swatted down by U.S. District Judge William Martinez on July 1.

Last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied sale of the land to the coalition, located south of West Sixth Avenue and east of Union Boulevard — a move Martinez backed in his July 1 ruling.

Cathy Alderman, a spokesperson for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, said the organization has no plans to appeal the ruling and that it did as much advocacy as it could for the homeless project.

“We are very disappointed in the ruling because it means hundreds of families and individuals in the Lakewood area are no closer to accessing safe shelter space or affordable housing and the numbers of people experi-

Due to the Mckinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a law that requires federal agencies to identify and make federal property available to local governments, states and nonprofits to aid homeless people, the coalition had the first shot at purchasing the land.

But last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services denied the coalition’s $120 million project, saying it had not explained thoroughly enough how it would finance it. Martinez agreed with the department’s decision last year. “(The court) finds that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not act arbitrarily, capriciously, or contrary to law when it denied the coalition’s application,” Martinez wrote in his ruling.

Richard Stebbins, public affairs officer of the U.S. General Services Administration, the agency that carried out the process of auctioning the land, said the area will be up for grabs again — but he doesn’t know when.

“We’re just trying to work out the mechanics of it so that it’s fair for everybody,” said Stebbins.

My Favorite Home Improvements When Purchasing a New-to-Me Home

Who doesn’t want to make some improvements on a home they have just purchased? Here are my top favorites.

Energy efficiency is very important to Rita and me, so the first thing we do is pay for an energy audit by someone like Andrew Sams of Alpine Building Performance to identify opportunities for making the home more air-tight. This would likely include blowing more insulation into walls or ceilings and caulking around windows. It might also include installing an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) to bring fresh air into the home using a heat exchanger that warms cold outside air in the winter and cools hot outside air in the summer.

I love bringing sunlight into a home,

not with traditional skylights but with sun tunnels. Solatube is a well-known brand but I prefer the Velux brand. I had Mark Lundquist of Design Skylights install a 22-inch Velux sun tunnel in my windowless garage and a 14-inch one in my windowless laundry room — and four large Velux sun tunnels in the Golden Real Estate office. We love them!

Since you will be driving an electric car someday, install as much as Xcel Energy allows to cover that future load. If you have just purchased an EV, Xcel will allow you to install more panels based on future use rather than just the last 12 months’ usage.

Don’t you hate climbing a curb to enter your driveway? Developers install those mountable curbs the entire length of the streets in new subdivisions, not knowing exactly where each driveway will be. One of the first things I would do (and have done) is to hire a concrete company to replace the mountable curb with a smooth entrance. It cost over $2,000 for my 3-car-wide driveway, but I love it every time I enter from the street! Caution: the sidewalk will now be sloped slightly and pedestrians could more easily slip on ice, so be prepared to salt your sidewalk to eliminate icing!

When your gas forced air furnace needs replacing, consider replacing it

with a heat-pump furnace. And when your gas water heater needs replacing, I recommend buying a heat-pump water heater. Once you’ve replaced both, you will have also eliminated the most common sources of carbon monoxide poisoning in your home.

Other improvements I’d consider include: Replacing carpeting with ceramic or porcelain tile in bathrooms; replacing regular glass with Low-E glass on southfacing windows; replacing fluorescent fixtures (such as in garage) with those great 2x2, inch-thick LED panels sold at Home Depot for under $100. Love ’em!

After seasons full of surprise indoor training days, when Arvada High School athletes trained in the hallways to avoid a muddy track, the school is celebrating the construction of its new track and field.

Arvada High School will be one of eight Jeffco schools receiving a new track and turf field this summer, with more field replacements planned in

the coming years.

“Almost all of the high schools are going to get a track and field this year or next year, or the track has already been replaced recently,” said project manager Ed Huszcza.

The construction crew broke ground on Arvada High’s all-weather track in July with plans to finish the project by Oct. 10, Huszcza said. In total, the Arvada High’s new field will cost roughly $2.3 million, which is comparable to the project budgets for other district high school tracks, he said.

During the first weeks of the school year, the football team will practice elsewhere on campus and may play more away games than in previous seasons, Arvada High Athletic Direc-

tor Dan Quaratino said.

Come October, the crew will have completed the turf field and replaced the dirt track with a concrete track overlaid with rubber.

“The concrete lasts a lot longer, and it’s more enjoyable for runners,” Huszcza said. He added the district chose to renovate school tracks and fields because of the wear and tear the facilities have sustained over the years.

“The tracks were in bad shape and the turf fields were at the end of their life,” he said. “They become a liability for the athletes, so this will make sure our athletes are playing on a safe field.”

Jeffco Public Schools’s construction plans will put Arvada High’s facilities

on par with those in other districts, many of which already have all-weather facilities, Quaratino said.

“You want to practice on what you play on. It’s hard for our kids to be practicing on dirt and then go onto an all-weather track to compete,” he said. “Creating first class facilities is important to our district.”

In addition to improving the students’ athletic capabilities, he hoped the new track would provide the athletes an even more memorable high school experience.

“A lot of our kids are not going to play college ball, so you have to ask, `what experience are you giving them?’” he said. “We want to provide the best opportunities and experiences for our kids.”

Contest asks residents to identify heroes next door

This summer, neighborhood block parties will double as a chance for residents to reveal their hidden talents — all in the name of emergency preparedness.

The city has launched the Neighborhood Challenge contest to encourage community members to get to know more about their neighbors and the resources that may be available right next door.

“Your neighbors are heroes, even though they aren’t wearing capes,” said community resilience coordinator Enessa Janes. “They all have talents that really can be helpful in emergencies — or every day.”

To enter the contest, residents can pick up a neighborhood talent bank from the third floor of City Hall,

8101 Ralston Rd., or download the document from the city’s Resilient Neighborhoods page. The bank asks for a short profile on each family in the community, including resources the family could share with neighbors, needs the family has and skills and hobbies the family members possess.

Janes collaborated with neighborhood engagement coordinator Charise Canales to incorporate emergency preparedness into the neighborhood challenge, which ran in a similar form last year. By strengthening bonds within the community, Canales said, the city aims to promote preparedness.

“For a long time, many had done that in a scare tactics way,” she said.

“But what’s most effective is getting people to want to build relationships with their neighbors.”

She encouraged residents to fill out the form during a block party or neighborhood event.

After completing the form, neighbors should take a picture of the finished talent bank and email it to neighborhoods@arvada.org. The city asks that residents include the number of households that participated, the most interesting thing the residents learned and the name of their neighborhood in the email.

One winner will be chosen each month for June, July, August and September. The city will announce the June winner sometime in July,

Canales added that the contest coincides not only with block party season, but also with National Preparedness Month in September and National Good Neighbor Day on Sept. 28.

“We’re trying to get people to think about National Preparedness Month in a positive way,” she said.

“This is all about celebrating your neighbors.”

When Maureen Sotoohi and her daughter, Ana, decided they wanted to take a fitness class, the next step was easy. By Saturday morning, the two found themselves standing in Olde Town Square, prepared to take an Apex Center class outdoors and free of charge as part of this month’s Fitness in the Square program.

“It’s a great workout — this is the most working out we’ve done all summer,” Ana Sotoohi said.

For the remainder of July, Apex will host its Fitness in the Square classes every Saturday morning in Olde Town Square, adjacent to the Arvada Library at 7525 W. 57th Ave. “It’s convenient, and it’s so nice to be outside,” Maureen Sotoohi said.

The classes began with a boot camp on July 13 led by Apex instructor Alexi Robinson, who led participants through “a little bit of everything,” she said, from strength moves to cardio.

Apex plans to hold a Zumba class in the square at nine a.m. on Saturday, July 20 and a pound class at nine a.m.

Global glove company relocates US HQ to Arvada Relocation brings new jobs, international presence to town

For Drew Eakins, glove company Hestra’s decision to relocate to Arvada couldn’t have been better news.

Not only had Eakins been keeping an eye on the Sweden-based company, he said, the new headquarters also went up less than three miles from the outdoor enthusiast’s home.

“It was really exciting just to have everything I wanted to do right here in Arvada,” said Eakins, who started working as the company’s marketing manager after the headquarters’s

relocation. “I’m lucky to work in this industry, and in my own town.”

Eakins wasn’t the only one to benefit from the change, with a handful of his fellow Arvada residents and Hestra employees also moving into the company’s new U.S. headquarters this summer.

Located at 12425 W. 54th Dr., the newly constructed building is almost twice the size of the company’s previous national headquarters in Golden.

The Arvada building offers more than 5,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of warehouse space, said Hestra U.S. president Dino Dardano.

Selling in 26 countries and more than 6,000 retailers, the global company has left no angle of the glove market unexplored, specializing in winter sports gloves, work industrial gloves and high fashion gloves, he said.

Well, as it turns out, there is an ‘I’ in team

T

here’s only one of me (you’ll be happy to know), but from now on I want to be thought of as Team Craig.

Calling yourself or yourselves a team is the latest and the greatest, and I don’t want to be left out.

My dentist and her hygienists are a team.

My car is repaired by a team.

A team made my pizza last week, and a team will check my eyesight when I have my annual exam.

There’s a home improvements and repairs outfit that calls itself a team.

When a word becomes a movement, I want to ride it until I get saddle sores.

If I had to stretch things, I could say my echo and my shadow are Team Craig teammates.

Maybe you remember the Ink Spots and their great song, “We Three.”

This (for once) is a true story. When I gave my students a QUIET weekend ink drawing DESPERATION project, I told them to listen to the Ink Spots.

One kid thought I meant I wanted them to listen to the ink spots, and he was serious.

There are, in fact, teams. Every high school and college in Craig Marshall the State of Colorado has a number Smith of teams, and they compete against teams from other schools and states.

I have a harder time thinking of a guy wearing grease for an aftershave and leaning into the engine of my car to adjust the carburetor as a member of a team. But it sounds good.

I know some writers have ghost writers and editors and research people, but at Team Craig it’s really just Craig.

Unless you count Harry.

And why not? He inspires a number of columns each year, and he’s practically a dependent.

If you are a dog owner, you know what I mean. His veterinarian bills alone? Get out of here.

In her own way (discretion will limit details), Jennifer plays for Team Craig too.

Skaggs story teaches us that tomorrow is not promised

n July 1st, just over two weeks ago, a young man by the name of Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in Dallas. This was very unexpected — Tyler was just weeks shy of his 28th birthday, and a professional athlete. He was a pitcher for the Anaheim HITTING Angels.

Boy, that’s a HOME downer lede.

Tyler wore number 45, and, in his honor, last Friday night, every player for the Angels wore number 45. And that wasn’t all. Tyler’s mom threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the game; Michael Alcorn the best player on the planet, Mike Trout, one of Tyler’s teammates, hit the first pitch he saw 454 feet; the two pitchers for the Angels that night combined to throw a no-hitter, the first combined no-hitter in major league baseball since July 13, 1991, which happens to be . . . wait for it ... Tyler Skaggs’ birthday.

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Of course, all of the very cool numerological occurrences surrounding Tyler Skaggs’ death don’t, in any way, diminish the tragedy of his untimely death, or, I’m sure, the pain his loved ones feel. Perhaps, the only good that could come out of it is to bring more attention to his death, to make people more aware of one, simple thing: Tomorrow is not promised.

In 2010, the Washington Nationals brought a promising young pitcher up to the major leagues named Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg was a freak of nature — big, strong kid who could throw the ball 100 mph and drop a wicked curve ball off the kitchen table. However, in 2011, that young man developed elbow pain, and had to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair it. He was out for that year, and only came back partway into the 2012 season, with the team and his agent putting him on a strict limit as far as innings he could pitch. The problem was, the Nationals played phenomenal baseball that summer, and looked like the favorites to win the World Series.

They’re too talented not to.” Except they haven’t. They made another playoff run in 2014, which also ended in the first round, and the Nationals haven’t been back to the playoffs since. For Strasburg, that’s been okay — he is still one of the best pitchers in baseball, and it can be argued that the shutdown extended his career. But, for the Nationals…

Tomorrow is not promised.

I would never advocate living just for today. Obviously, as a teacher, a lot of what we work for is tomorrow, and in my particular job, almost

everything I do only pays off in the future. Tomorrow is something you work towards, you plan for, and you prepare for.

But it is not a good place to live.

People who live in the future are either incorrigible worriers or hopeless dreamers.

Today has a special wonder to it that deserves your full attention. Especially during these hot, lazy days of summer. Every day is an opportunity to do something special, to get better at something, to invest in yourself or somebody else. And, as soon as the sun sets, this day is over — it’s never coming back. Kristy Kay Mestdagh On Saturday, June 22, 2019, Kristy Kay Mestdagh, loving wife, mother, “grammy,” sister, and friend passed away at the age of 62 of complications due to uterine cancer.

Kristy was born on May 28, 1957, in Davenport, Iowa to Amos and Patricia Claybaugh. She was raised in Greeley, Colorado where she attended University High School. She then attended University of Northern Colorado and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1979. On October 25th, 1986 Kristy married Steven Alan Mestdagh. Together, they raised two sons, Ian and Sean.

Kristy was preceded in death by her parents, Amos and Patricia Claybaugh. She is survived by her husband Steven, her two sons Ian and Sean, Ian’s wife Katrina, her siblings Donna and Norm, her nieces Erin and Courtney and their families, and will be missed most of all by her granddaughter Makaylee.

Kay had an unwavering faith in God and was very involved with supporting St. Anne’s Catholic Church. She served as the principal’s secretary at St. Anne’s school for many years and worked at the St. Anne’s Credit Union.

Kay was a long-time resident of Arvada before retiring to Sun City West, AZ. Kay was appreciated for her Italian cooking and quick wit. She loved watching all kinds of sports, especially when her children or grandchildren were participating. Kay worked for the Arizona Diamondbacks and saw them win the World Series against her beloved New York Yankees. Most importantly Kay will be remembered for her love for her family and friends.

Opportunities abound to enjoy the great outdoors off the ground

oloradans are known for their love of outdoor adventures.

Traditionally, these activities take place on solid ground.

However, the Denver metro area also offers plenty of high-adrenaline experiences that get participants off the ground and into the air.

Soaring above Golden Paragliding is kind of like sitting in a lawn chair in the sky, said David Hach, co-owner of Paraglide Tandem, a Golden-based company that serves Colorado residents and tourists.

“It really feels like we’re flying like a bird,” Hach said. “And the views are amazing.”

Paraglide Tandem started in 2013 and today, the Paraglide Tandem team is made up of eight instructors, all certified by the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association as tandem pilots.

The experience lasts about two hours, Hach said. The instructor will meet the client at about 10 a.m.

Hach said — in the parking area at the base of Mount Zion, which is near the Chimney Gulch Trailhead off U.S. 6 in Golden. From the parking lot, the two take a five-to-10-minute walk to the launch site, which is near the Colorado School of Mines’ M on Mount Zion.

“Then we sit back, relax and watch the weather for a bit,” Hach said.

The instructor will then get the client geared up and they’ll do a practice launch. Then, the two step into the 42-square-meter glider — the guest in front and the pilot in the back.

“We wait for a nice gust of wind, and then we launch,” Hach said, adding there’s no free-fall involved. “We’ll soar around for as long as we can.

And if they want, we’ll do tricks.”

Generally, a flight will last about five to 15 minutes, depending on conditions, Hach said.

“I love the reaction that everybody has,” he said. “They’re always surprised how smooth and mellow it is.”

Paragliding is a “risky sport,” Hach said, but Paraglide Tandem instructors are well-versed in the sport and they will only take people out “when conditions are perfect for a safe flight.”

Hach went paragliding for the first time on his fifth birthday in 1993.

“I’ve been hooked ever since,” he said. “It’s my passion and it’s fun to be able to share it with people.”

Cultural fun under the summer sun

atino culture is a vibrant and dynamic one that defies stereotypes and easy categorization, and with the Latino population in the state and country steadily growing, exploring it can be both illuminating and fun.

For the past four years, the Westminster Latino Festival has aimed to do just that — celebrate the traditions and contemporary experiences of the Latino community, not only for its members, but everyone who wants to enjoy it.

“The focus is for first, second, third and the COMING `everybody else’ ATTRACTIONS generation,” explained Manuel Tejada, founder and president of the festival. “The idea behind the festival is its an event of diversity for everybody to enjoy.”

Held from 11 Clarke Reader a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at the RTD Westminster Station, 6995 Grove St., and its surrounding streets, the festival brings a little of something for everyone.

The event begins with a concert by the Denver Municipal Band, playing a special repertoire featuring Latin beats with arrangements of signature pieces from the whole continent. Music is an integral part of the event, and throughout the day there will be folkloric dances from Mexico and other countries, salsa demos, and a variety of live bands featuring salsa, cumbia, R&B and Latin Jazz.

There will be an exhibition of lowriders, courtesy of Longmontbased Suave Car Club, as well as “luchadores” performing their stunts taking photos. New this year is a second stage that will feature karaoke, games and more fun.

“We’re ways trying to make it better, and you can see the growth every year,” Tejada said. “We used to host this at the library, but we had such great acceptance from the community and neighbors, we had move it to a bigger place.”

Tapping into the creative side of the community, the festival is launching “Color Westminster”, an opportunity for local artists to create their art on a series of blank canvas that will be placed at the festival.

Food and drink haven’t been forgotten - a variety of food trucks and vendors will be on hand providing delicious Mexican and South American food, shaved ice, ice cream, churros, and fresh squeezed lemonades. There will also be a beer garden.

The ropes course was originally at the former Heritage Square site — a tourist attraction near Golden that has since closed — and was installed at Adventure Golf & Raceway in 2016.

All sorts of people have enjoyed it since then, Brown said, including individuals who want to challenge themselves, families who want bonding time and groups for team building.

“The ropes course (and its challenges) pushes people to do things they’re not comfortable with at first,” Brown said. But in the end, “they enjoy trying something they haven’t done before.”

Go on an adventure Located within Philip S. Miller Park, Castle Rock Adventure Park offers three main activities — a zipline tour, the Epic Adventure Tower and the Sky Trek.

Each has a different draw, said Adam White, general manager of Castle Rock Adventure Park, but all of them will get your heart pumping.

“They’re different than anything else you can find,” White said. “And you get great views, with essentially no obstructions because you’re so high up.”

The Sky Trek is Castle Rock Adventure Park’s newest attraction. It

features four levels — the top is 50 feet off the ground — and 120 different obstacles. The Sky Trek’s Ninja Warrior Experience features a course similar to NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” TV series, White said.

The Epic Adventure Tower is “the destination for your adrenaline junkie,” White said.

Among other features, it includes a 42-foot climbing wall, four rappelling stations and three different platforms, including the 75-foot Eagles Nest, which offers a harnessed freefall.

The Castle Rock Adventure Park opened in 2015 with the zipline tour.

The zipline tour provides an adrenaline experience that’s not too overwhelming, White said, but “it’s still a lot of fun flying through the air.”

The zipline tour takes about two to three hours to complete. There’s about a mile of hiking, which is split up among the 10 ziplines. Along the route, each line gets longer and faster. People take the tour in small groups accompanied by a guide certified by the Association for Challenge Course Technology.

Get a rush on ropes course Compared to other experiences that get people off the ground, the ropes course at Adventure Golf & Raceway in Westminster is a safe way to challenge your physical abilities, while still getting that adrenaline rush.

“People enjoy the controlled environment,” said Allen Brown, the managing director of Adventure Golf & Raceway.

The ropes course “gives them a way to get that rush without the potential to get hurt.”

The Adventure Ropes Course is a two-level course that offers 25 different challenges with varying degrees of difficulty. Perched above a giant maze made of constructed walls, the first level of the ropes course is about 10 or 12 feet off the ground, Brown said, and the second level is about 20 feet off the ground.

Challenges range from walking across tires to navigating a slackline. People are harnessed in, and once on the course, they choose their own path, Brown said.

“People tend to be really nervous when they first try it,” Brown said.

“But then, we see that they gain confidence and start to enjoy the interaction with the device. And then there’s some people who don’t want to come down.”

The show features alt-rock legend Beck co-headlining with newer alt-pop standard bearers Cage the Elephant. Which is all well and good, but the third (and lower) group on the bill is Texas’ Spoon, a group responsible for some of the best indie rock of this century.
