After nearly a year of work, the city has installed a new lighting system for the Olde Town Water Tower. The lights came back on June 26 after a previous system failure in the fall of 2018, according to the city. The need for a new system provided an opportunity to update the tower’s lighting, including by creating a system that uses less energy than the previous lights did, the city said. The new system also allows for colored lights to shine depending on the occasion. The multicolored lights went up just in time for Independence Day celebrations, shining red, white and blue throughout the week of July 1.

City attorney retiring this month after 24 years in Arvada

Working for the community I am so honored to work for the city. The people who run the city really do believe in the citizens, and we want to make Arvada the best city in the state and in the nation.

It’s kind of neat how you can go into a store or attend a kids’ sports game and you know you have been helping the people you’re seeing, even if they don’t know who you are.

About me I’ve been the Arvada city attorney for the past 24 years. I previously was the attorney in Glenwood Springs, and prior to that I spent about 15 years in the Aurora City Attorney’s Office. I started law working full-time and going to night school, and I fell in love with municipal law. You can serve the public at many different levels of government, but the municipal government is really closest to the people.

It’s very gratifying to serve the individuals in your neighborhood.

Decades of accomplishments As a city attorney, my client is the city council, and it’s the public who chooses who’s going to sit on the council. We’re responsible for handling all of the legal aspects of running a municipality, whether it’s prosecuting misdemeanors or writing the hundreds of contracts that need to be drafted. We defend the city if the city gets sued, and there’s also a lot of this job that’s just man-

Jeffco libraries offer access to genealogy database Use of MyHeritage tool allows county residents to explore their family history STAFF REPORT

Jefferson County Public Library now offers access to MyHeritage, an online database that helps people explore their family’s history.

Jeffco residents can access the database from any district library or from home, and use it to upload family photos, create a family tree, browse through millions of historical photos and search through more than 9 billion historical records, said a news release.

MyHeritage enables users to search birth, death and marriage records from 48 countries, the complete U.S. and U.K. censuses, immigration, military and tombstone records, and other genealogy resources that span the last five centuries. The MyHeritage database includes more than 3 billion family tree profiles, and due to ongoing content contributions by individual users, the database grows at an average pace of nearly 2 million

records every day.

Obstacle challenge open to ages 5-16 Parents can participate along with their kids in the family wave STAFF REPORT

Kids and teens who want to push themselves are invited to participate in the Kids Obstacle Challenge, a race series for ages 5-16.

The 1.5- to 2-mile challenge,

which includes 13-15 obstacles, takes place July 27-28 at the Apex Center, 13150 W. 72nd Ave., Arvada. Parents or legal guardians are allowed to complete the course for free in the family wave, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The competitive wave for ages 10-16 begins at 8:30 a.m., and participants can win Razor scooters and more.

The obstacles include rock walls, army crawling through mud pits, rope swinging over water, scaling

up rugged cargo nets and more.

Registration is required. Cost for the family wave is $52 per person in advance, or $60 on the day of the race, if space is available.

Cost for the competitive wave is $59 per person. Day-of admission is not allowed in the competitive wave.

Participants must arrive an hour before their wave time.

With Veto of HB-1212, Gov. Polis Eliminated Licensing of HOA Managers

Governor Polis surprised everyone with his May 31st veto of House Bill 1212, which would have extended the licensing of Community Association Managers (CAMs).

CAM licensing began in 2015 but was subject to renewal in 2018, under its “sunset” provision. Accordingly, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) conducted a sunset review recommending renewal of CAM licensing. The Democratically controlled House of Representatives passed a 2018 bill renewing CAM licensing, but the Republican controlled Senate killed it, thereby requiring DORA to enter into a yearlong wind-down of the program, with July 1, 2019, as the total ending of CAM licensing.

With the Democrats taking control of both houses of the General Assembly and the governorship this year, it was expected that a bill continuing CAM licensing would be passed by both houses (which it was) and signed by the Governor in time to save the program — but it wasn’t. As a result, when July 1 arrived this month, all CAM licensing ended more abruptly than was anticipated at the end of the legislative session. Gov. Polis’ signature on HB 1212 would have prevented that from happening.

HB 1212 had been weakened somewhat due to aggressive lobbying by the

Community Association Institute (CAI) whose membership consists primarily of HOA management companies. Efforts by Stan Hrincevich, an outspoken homeowner advocate, to include more protections for homeowners were unsuccessful, and that may have been a factor in the Governor’s veto, but Stan (and I) were stunned that the Governor allowed CAM licensing to end, albeit while ordering DORA to gather stakeholder input on the subject in coming months. Sessions for that purpose have been scheduled for Aug. 14 and 29, Sept. 12, and Oct. 8 at DORA’s Denver offices. You can register to attend in person or by webinar. The short-lived licensing of HOA managers provided a channel for homeowners to file complaints when they felt cheated or mistreated by their HOA or their HOA’s management company — and there were plenty of complaints which the CAM office at DORA tracked.

Following the passage of the original CAM licensing law in 2015, managers had to pass background checks, get certified, pay a fee, and pass a state exam in order to be licensed. There were also continuing education requirements.

Starting this month, anyone, including a felon straight out of prison, can be hired as a community manager. HOA management will once again be the only profession in Colorado where unlicensed personnel can function in a fiduciary capacity, managing millions of dollars of other people’s money without oversight.

City lights fireworks on rainy Fourth of July

oloradans from around the area came together at the Stenger Sports Complex, 11200 W. 58th Ave., to celebrate the Fourth of July with the city of Arvada. The city held a firework show beginning at nine p.m., with many gathering at the complex hours before.

Although the stormy weather caused technical difficulties, prompting the city to end the show early, the city said, a good portion of the fireworks were launched. The city hoped residents would attend the show instead of lighting their own fireworks, which is illegal in Arvada.

Police asked neighbors to report any illegal fireworks.

“Thanks to everyone who helped celebrate July Fourth,” the city said on Twitter. “We’ll hope for better conditions next year.”

Free lunch program at library creates ‘little community’ Weekday program that hands out lunches serves nearly 50 families a day

Every day at noon, dozens of families go out to one of Olde Town’s most popular summer lunch spots: the Arvada Library.

As part of a program by Jewish Family Service called Lunchbox Express, the library is handing out free lunches for children every weekday from noon to 1:30 p.m. The program runs in 21 locations throughout the Denver metro area, including other county libraries such as Wheat Ridge Library, Lakewood Library and Edgewater Library.

The Arvada location has taken part in the program for three years, chosen

“It’s an amazing program that allows us to feed kids, some of whom may not otherwise have access to healthy meals,” she said. “For us as a library, it’s about serving the whole individual.”

In previous years, the Arvada Library distributed lunches from a bus that parked outside the library.

The lunches are available to any child who comes in and includes a fruit, a vegetable and a sandwich or wrap, Reading said.

She added that nearly 50 families come in for the program every day, some of them regulars and some of them brand new.

Many make a day of the library outing, enjoying the library’s story times and crafts alongside the meal.

For Shawna Cordova, who runs local business Shawna’s Home Day Care, the lunch makes the perfect fieldtrip for the children she supervises.

“We come once a week,” she said.

“They get the lunch and the story time, and they enjoy that a lot. This encourages people to come to the library.”

Nancy Rubio shared the sentiment, saying she often brings her two-yearold daughter, Nia, to the library for the lunch and the activities.

“It’s great just to teach the kids about nutrition,” she said. “It’s a wonderful program. I hope they have it every year.”

The Arvada program began on May 28 and will continue through Aug. 10, aiming to serve children during the time they are not in school.

“We don’t really know what situations kids come from, so just being a friendly place is important,” said Elise

Nancy Rubio and her two-year-old granddaughter, Nia, enjoy a free lunch and story time at the library. “There’s a lot of kids who need the lunch and just the love,” Rubio said.

“I like seeing all the kids come up to get food and to just become friends,” she said.

Those who the program serves said that, for the kids they care for, Lunchbox Express holds countless benefits.

“There are a lot of kids who need the lunch and just the love,” Rubio said. “This is a little tiny community for them.”

District considers weekly late start or early release for all schools Changes considered to allow for regular teacher planning time

TWO PROPOSALS Jeffco Public Schools is considering incorporating weekly collaborative planning time, known as PLCs, into all school schedules.

The district intends to seek community feedback on two proposals.

After a March survey and June school board meeting, Jeffco Public Schools is considering its next steps for a plan that could set a weekly late start or early release for all of its schools.

The discussion coincides with a change to the 2019-2020 calendar, which will not include the handful of early release days that are usually listed. These days — when students leave school early while staff members stay for planning and training — have been included in previous districtwide school calendars. But in 2019-2020 the individual schools may choose to hold early release days, and there will be five to seven full non-student days districtwide, depending on how many snow days are taken during the school year.

A significant change to this scheduling plan could go into effect in the 2020-2021 school year, designating a weekly time for teacher planning known as Professional Learning Committees (PLCs), or collaborative

“Teachers are overwhelmingly begging for this time period,” Jeffco PTA president Shawna Fritzler said.

While almost all district high schools already include PLC time in their weekly schedules through a late start or early release, most elementary and middle schools do not, said Todd Engels, executive director of school leadership with the district.

Members of the Jefferson County Educators Association (JCEA) asked the district to create PLC time for all schools during their negotiations process in the spring of 2018.

The teachers’ union and district signed a memorandum of understanding that led to the formation of the Late Start/Early Release Taskforce, with the goal of finding the best strategy to implement PLC

time.

“We’ve got knowledge of better instructional strategies to make learning engaging for kids, but the reality is, that takes more (planning) time,” said Karen Quanbeck, who was elementary chief of schools before moving to another district July 1. “This is not work teachers can do in isolation or at home.”

The taskforce is currently debating when the PLC period should occur, or how long it should be.

At the board’s June 12 study session, Quanbeck and her colleagues presented two proposals for how the district could implement the change, should it choose to do so.

School finance employees have estimated the supervision will cost $225,000, Quanbeck said.

The estimation is based on the assumption that roughly half of parents will need supervision for their children during the PLC time, “which is what other districts who have done this have seen happen,” she said.

Presenters suggested either all schools would use the same PLC time, or have high schools keep their current PLC times, but have all elementary and middle schools would use a uniform time. That second option would cost the district an estimated additional $335,000 because of the bus schedule, putting the total cost at $560,000.

The second option may also pose a problem for bigger families who depend on older students to look after younger students while parents are at work, Fritzler said.

“When we change just high school or just middle school, we create other impacts to families,” she said.

A second proposal would allow high schools to keep current PLC times while asking each middle and elementary schools to individually schedule a weekly PLC time. That time could occur at any point during the student contact day.

Though this proposal gives schools more scheduling freedom, it could create a burden for families with multiple children. Proposal two would also be more costly than both versions of proposal one.

Because PLC times could happen at any time of day, the district would need to fund supervision for all students, instead of half of K-5 students. This would increase supervision costs from $225,000 to between $2 million and $3.2 million, Quanbeck said.

What’s next The district plans to send out a strategic survey to parents and teachers to determine which proposal would most benefit families and staff, or if the community would like to see other options. Future survey feedback will also help determine the day PLC time falls on, as well as whether the time occurs during a late start or an early release.

Fritzler added that the district will increase communication with the community, potentially through social media and a presentation at Back to School Night.

The board hopes to make a final decision no later than mid-November this year.

“What we need to commit to is finding a quality solution and then seeing if we could afford it,” said board president Ron Mitchell. “This is an issue that we need to find a way to deal with.”

Ashley Sever and her husband recently married and set their eyes on purchasing their first home together.

The two looked to make Lakewood their home, and they accomplished that, but it didn’t come without having to overcome a few obstacles.

Sever learned that her newly purchased house had a high amount of radon — a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in water, rock and soil. The couple installed a radon regulation system in their home, but they encountered another problem — their property’s wiring was a fire hazard.

“The main thing we decided was that it is more important to focus on health and safety things before we got into the cosmetic upgrades,” said Sever.

Jeffco County Public Health (JCPH) wants to make sure that residents consider health and safety when moving into a new home. The health department is encouraging people to

“If you think about the average 24hour day, most people spend at least half of the day at home,” said James Rada in a statement. He is the environmental health services director for JCPH. “There is a strong connection between our health and where we live, and there are some important things people can do to make sure their house or apartment — and their neighborhood — is as safe as possible.”

Around 50 percent of homes in Colorado have high levels of radon, according to JCPH. Radon can cause health issues like cancer, and it’s invisible and doesn’t have a smell. Lead in paint

“Rightfully so, it has its health risks that are very much real, but lead is really a danger if it’s ingested,” said Andrew Sams, a professional home inspector and founder of Alpine Building Performance, a home inspection business. He said lead can reach a

Sams said most health risks with homes he inspects revolve around air quality, but there are other factors he looks for like if a deck is properly connected to a house.

“We want to get a good, wellrounded idea of the condition of a property. There are plenty of things that we report on that are not health and safety related, but might have big ticket implications as far as repair cost,” said Sams.

It’s no wonder, then, that she says residents have flooded into Resolute Brewing Tap & Cellar, 18148 W. 92nd Lane, every night since its opening in May. “Everybody is incredibly excited about having more options out here,” Rieter said. “This is a really cool spot.”

Resolute Brewing Tap & Cellar serves as a sister location to Resolute Brewing Company in Centennial, which provides beer to the Arvada location, said community and sales manager Andrew Duvall.

The company chose to put its second location in Arvada to connect with the “very underserved market” in northwest Arvada, he said.

“There’s a lot of people building homes here and moving into the area,” he said. “This neighborhood really needed a watering hole.”

Duvall highlighted the taproom’s barrel-aging program, with dozens of barrels of beer aging right on site at the new location. The program is the biggest in the area, excluding those in Denver and Boulder, he said.

He also encouraged customers to take part in the company’s Mug Club, which will launch when the business holds its ribbon cutting on Aug. 19 at 4:15 p.m. to celebrate its partnership with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce.

“You’ll get your own special glass and T-shirt,” he said. “We’re calling it the Beeramid Scheme. Hopefully, we get another great group of regulars out of this.”

For Duvall, one of the best parts of working for the company is that “I truly believe we have something for everyone,” he said.

Shades of gray look a lot less shady

S

top me if you’ve heard this one. The day I found my first gray hairs, I thought I’d dye.

Today’s essay is about gray hair. I like gray hair.

Americans are not allowed to grow older gracefully. We are reminded at every turn that youth will be noticed and served. And that trying to stay forever young, while an impossibility, can be achieved with dyes and injections.

I don’t always know who has had injections, but I (almost) always know who has dyed their hair.

Somewhere along the line, gray hair got a bad reputation, and it continues to this day.

There is absolutely nothing wrong

with gray hair, and most of the time it looks far better than the opaque alternative.

Our skin and our hair age together.

Jet black hair and 60-70-80-year-old skin is an incongruity.

Some of us, obviously, prefer the Craig Marshall incongruity.

Smith I began to have gray hair when I was in my early 20s. I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t happy about it. And then I saw someone my age who had

a full head of gray hair.

It was a comedian named Steve Martin. When I realized that having gray hair didn’t seem to bother him, it no longer bothered me that I had gray hair.

Actors and actresses have their hair dyed for various roles all the time. Martin’s hair was dyed black for his roles in “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” and “My Blue Heaven.”

He looked completely different, but it was right for those two performances.

However, some dye jobs don’t work out so well. The next time you watch “You’ve Got Mail,” take a close look at Tom Hanks’ hair. It’s so unnaturally black that it be-

comes a distraction.

I have sometimes wondered what it would be like to be a celebrity.

I have sometimes wondered what it would be like to be celebrity, whose looks are pre-eminent.

We have all seen plastic surgery gone wrong. In some cases, very wrong.

Some actors and actresses have grown old in front of our eyes without exaggerated attempts to preserve a memory.

Civility seems to be sorely lacking

LETTER TO THE EDITOR A+ for Arvada community Last Friday, early evening, I took my 3-year-old grandson over to Ralston Central Park to perhaps cool off and have some play time. The splash pad was a bit much for him, so he headed over to the playgrounds, starting with the smaller one in the middle.

It was very busy, crowded with an assortment of children ranging in age from 2 up to 10 or so. I stayed pretty close; he is small for his age and not aggressive. I would like to describe what I saw over the course of an hour or so there.

saw children enjoying themselves, but treating each other and the equipment with respect. I saw EVERYONE taking turns. I saw cooperation, and sharing among strangers. In particular, I was deeply impressed with the older children present; they were protective and helpful towards the young ones. I saw young men and women who stepped in if it appeared advantage was being taken. I saw a young man mediate fair use and respectful discourse with others he obviously did not know well.

Once upon a time, I thought it would be a really great thing to be on the national news. It seemed like, you know, that meant you were famous and good things would come your way if you were on the news. Even if it were just something nearby, you could bask in the vicarious glow. And then, HITTING I turned, like, 14, and actually HOME started watching the national news.

Being on the news is generally not a good thing.

Somehow, the 13-year old umpire is the only person in the room with both the good sense and the courage to ask those spectators to watch their language. And THAT is what touches off a stands-clearing brawl. Among the brilliant scenes that were to follow was a woman walking onto the field — of 7-yearolds — wielding an aluminum

baseball bat as a weapon, and one brave young man sucker-punching another man into unconsciousness.

So proud.

If you were inclined to dismiss the general coarsening of American life here in the 21st century, this should quickly disabuse you of that notion. We have lost our collective minds. And don’t come at me with “It’s Trump’s fault.” This long predates the Presidency of Donald Trump; an argument could be made that “The Apprentice” played a role, but I’m afraid that’s a bit too subtle and nuanced an argument to fit our current national mood.

And it’s not Donald Trump supporters who are running through the streets of a major American city wearing masks, clubbing retirees over the head with tire irons, and throwing “milkshakes” mixed with caustic substances on people they disagree with. The tolerance of Antifa from the political Left (have you heard any of the 65 candidates decry their actions?) is just as bad as the President’s indulgence of the idiots down in Charlottesville.

But, as the poet said, “they didn’t start the fire.”

We have always been a passionate people, and our disagreements

um. Here are some fruits and vegetables,” says adult to child.

Young child’s mouth is sealed shut. “Let’s eat some salsa you helped chop up! Yummy!” Magically the mouth may open up with a smile.

Not convinced? Give salsa a whirl.

Sometimes when families are encouraging small children to eat fruits LIFELONG and vegetables amiLEARNING ably we need a new Esther Macalady approach. There are three nutritionists’ suggestions to follow: make the pieces small, thick salsa style; include children in the preparation; omit the spice or onions in the salsa.

Versatile Salsa Salsa is sauce in Spanish which means it can go on something to add interest and flavor, but young children like it as a stand- alone, as well as, on top of something.

Fruit salsa is generally an easy choice for young children. Make sure the children are standing on a sturdy surface and use plastic or table knives for chopping. Here are some possibilities: strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, pitted Bing cherries, mangoes, peeled apples, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, peeled peaches, whatever is in season. The salsa should store for a day. Add fresh banana pieces before serving.

And not that long ago, looking down from 10,000 feet, it was wildly controversial that Clark Gable got to declare on screen, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” But now Hollywood makes no pretense of holding up standards, our politicians make no effort to elevate anything except themselves, and our culture wallows and sinks deeper into the muddy swamp of debasement.

Except for 13-year old umpires who have the temerity to ask for it to stop.

I have to wonder if the death of civility won’t lead, ultimately, to the death of civilization. *** I made a list a few weeks back of

Mix the juice of half or less of a lemon and 1 Tablespoon of strawberry jam together and stir into the fruit.

The salsa can be served with buttered toast or an English muffin or a side of Cheerios.

If you have time, make some cinnamon tortilla chips in the oven. Set the oven at 375 degrees. Butter the tortillas and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon and sugar. Place on a cookie sheet and use a pizza cutter to cut into triangles or squares. Bake in the oven for about 8 minutes or until they are light brown. When cooled, children can spoon salsa onto the chips.

Not So Spicy Vegetable salsa is a little trickier because young children may not like the texture or taste of vegetables yet, but it is worth a try. Start with very small tender zucchini, black beans, cooked corn, shaved carrots cut into tiny squares, and tiny pieces of chopped lettuce. Add a little salt and eat with toast or homemade tortillas with no cinnamon. If the vegetables need to be a bit softer sprinkle with water and put the mixture in the microwave for a few seconds. Tomatoes, onions, and peppers are often a problem so that probably knocks out tomato salsa for a while.

Good intentions go bad in ‘Fairfield’

‘More than just food’ Popularized by former Colorado State University professor Loren Cordain’s 2010 book “The Paleo Diet,” the whole-food-based diet encourages mimicry of a human diet thousands of years ago — “the evolutionary way to look at nutrition,” Gerber said.

Gerber — who was certified in family medicine in 1991 and has been a healthcare provider in the area since 1993 — and those in his support group focus on a low-carb version of the diet. Strict followers do not eat sugar, grains, margarine, some dairy products and processed food. Instead, they eat natural foods, including meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and fruit.

“It’s a little less carbs and a little more protein and fat,” he said. “A lowfat diet is the old school.”

Gerber often recommends whole food diets like paleo and keto to his patients, reminding them that choosing what to eat is just one part of the equation.

“There is something useful in people on stage making the mistakes as a way to have the audience identify,” explained Jada Suzanne Dixon.

“I’m intrigued by the deliberate provocativeness COMING of the show as a ATTRACTIONS potential mirror to examine ourselves and maybe spark a conversation that needs to happen.”

Directed by Dixon, “Fairfield” is making its regional premiere at Miners Alley Playhouse, 1224 Clarke Reader Washington Ave. in Golden, from July 12 through Aug. 18. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The show is about Fairfield Elementary, a public school located in a diverse and liberal district. When a teacher’s attempt to celebrate Black History Month go awry, everything erupts into chaos in the school and community. The show raises questions about what society determines what is appropriate and inappropriate.

This is Dixon’s directorial debut at the theater, and she said the intimacy of the space allows audiences to really immerse themselves in the story being told.

“It generates this feeling of the audience being a part of the action, being a participant, versus, sitting back,” she said. “That is what I am hoping we accomplish. That even when the audience feels uncomfortable, and they will feel uncomfortable, that they lean in even further.

That they are able to see themselves or see others in their life as the characters. That they can identify with the moments in the play where the characters crash into the irrational decisions over and over.”

Cast members include Sheryl McCallum, Adeline Mann, Brian Landis Folkins and Sinjin Jones. As they developed the show, Dixon said the cast and crew had some insightful conversations about the show and what the characters are experiencing.

Proponents say eating healthy is easier than ever as diets gain popularity

or the past four years, Littleton resident Kimberly Spomer has attended a support group. The group of roughly 25 people consists of like-minded individuals seeking community and advice as they follow the paleolithic or “paleo” diet and other low-carb diets.

“You go out to eat, and it can be difficult feeling like you’re the only one,” she said. “The group is this really strong community. We know each other, we watch each other’s progress, we share tips and books that we’ve read.”

Known as the Low-Carb and Paleo Support Group, the monthly meeting is run by Denver’s Diet Doctor at 7720 S. Broadway and facilitated by health care professionals Dr. Jeff Gerber, Erynn Kay and Jennifer Hooker. Members give each other cooking and shopping tips and encouragement after days gone wrong, Spomer said.

The group showcases just one way low-carb dieters have come together as the trend establishes itself in the mainstream. Though some point to a falling number of Google searches for the term “paleo,” Spomer and Gerber hold that low-carb diets are hardly fading away — especially in Colorado,

POSSIBLE RISKS OF DIETS While experts praise low-carb, high-fat diets like paleo and keto for their prioritization of natural foods and potential to instigate weight loss, the diets also present some possible health challenges, according to Mayo Clinic.

Because those on the paleo diet cut out whole grains and legumes, the dieters may be deficient in fiber, vitamins and some micronutrients, Mayo Clinic said. The diet also places restrictions on dairy products, which could lead to a calcium or protein deficiency.

Dieters should be mindful of what types of fats, proteins and vitamins they are consuming. High-fat diets also put individuals at greater risk for kidney disease, heart disease and some cancers, according to University of California at Davis Health. which ranks as the number one state for Google searches of the terms “paleo” and “keto.”

The keto diet — on which dieters sharply restrict carb intake to put the body into ketosis, a metabolic state in which stored body fat is used to produce energy — has particularly gained popularity. In January 2019, 11 times more users searched the term than in January 2017.

Spomer said the trend shows through attendance at Low Carb Denver, a March conference she volunteers with. The conference drew more than 800 individuals in 2019, as opposed to the roughly 300 who attended in 2016, she said.

altering conditions — as was the case for Spomer, who has an autoimmune disease that left her with “no energy,” she said. “I would consume half as much as my family and gain half a pound a week.”

After trying different autoimmune protocol diets, Spomer landed on a low-carb paleo diet two years ago. She said she hasn’t experienced any of her symptoms since.

“Things got a lot better. People are shocked how much it helps,” she said.

“It changes everything.”

“Paleo is more than just food; it’s a way of life,” she said. “It’s taking care of yourself, getting exercise and having time to relax.”

Fynboh has followed the paleo diet for eight years, with Derek joining in a year after her, the day they signed the lease for their paleo restaurant, she said.

Throughout years of businesses, she has watched customers develop a better understanding of the diet as all types of people give the lifestyle a try.

“We’ve had people who literally got off the plane at DIA and drove to us first,” she said. “They’re from all over.

People just want to take their power back and their health back.”

A variety of options While following the paleo diet can initially be difficult and requires some online research, she said, “it’s very easy once you know what you’re doing.”

Boldly go to the future with Sci-Fi Film Festival The Denver Film Society and Denver Museum of Nature & Science have once again teamed-up to celebrate some of the classics of the genre in film while giving fans a chance to escape the summer heat. Spomer and those in the support group have put these tips to the test many times, often going out to Red Robin after group meetings, she said.

She added that with group members from Boulder to Colorado Springs, who range in age from students to retirees, there’s no shortage of advice to be had in the group.

“It’s huge for new people, because low-carb is a learning curve,” she said. “You have to be patient with yourself. Anyone can do it if they want to, and they can do it in all different ways.”

Grandbear to be honored at July 13 storytelling event Lev Ropes, more commonly known as Grandbear the Storyteller, tells a story to children in earlier years.

Ropes spent about 16 years telling stories to children in local schools with Jeffco Spellbinders, but recently retired for health reasons.

He will be honored at an event co-sponsored

by Rocky Mountain Storytelling and Miner’s Alley Playhouse on July 13.

About once a month, the entire third grade class at Shelton Elementary School used to gather into a classroom to hear a story by Grandbear the Storyteller.

“Everybody cheered when Grandbear walked in,” said Ella Matheo, now 12 who was one of the third graders. “Even though the kids were rowdy third graders, we always sat quietly through Grandbear’s stories, wondering what would happen next.”

Lev Ropes, also known as Grandbear the Storyteller, will be honored at a storytelling event that is a joint effort between Rocky Mountain Storytelling and Miner’s Alley Playhouse. This partnership’s first event takes place on July 13.

The event is being put on to provide everyone with more access to storytelling, said Kate Lutz, president of Rocky Mountain Storytelling, a nonprofit organization that puts on annual and ongoing storytelling events, including performances, workshops and other gatherings.

“Grandbear has been such a storytelling force in the community,” Lutz said.

“He’s Golden’s storyteller and everybody knows him — whether it’s a kid or their parent. And sometimes both.”

Ropes, 84, spent about 16 years telling stories to children in local schools with Jeffco Spellbinders, a nonprofit

organization that provides trained volunteers to tell oral stories in school classrooms.

Ropes said he loves everything about storytelling and that it’s the best thing he’s ever done.

“People really relate to stories. The relationship between the teller and the listener is really special,” Ropes said.

And “the reaction you get from your audience is wonderful. They perk up and you know they’re there with you.

And you’re there with them.”

Ropes recently retired from storytelling for health reasons, but is still involved in the art through coaching and mentoring others.

Target audience for the July 13 event are children and families. All of

the storytellers will be telling Ropes’ stories from his CD and book titled, “Tales of Tails from the Blue Heron Ranch.” Matheo will be one of the storytellers, and will be telling Grandbear’s “Martha and the Grasshopper.”

“It was truly an exciting and amazing experience to listen to his stories,” Matheo said. “I’m excited to tell this story because I’ve always been so happy to hear Grandbear’s stories, and I can’t wait to make others feel happy hearing it, too. I just hope I can tell it as well as Grandbear.”

The other performers who will be telling stories on July 13 are Lutz of Denver and Robbie Knight of Wheat Ridge, both from Rocky Mountain Storytelling; and Rory Pierce, director

“It’s going to be wonderful to see Grandbear’s legacy shining forth in the program,” Lutz said. “This is a chance to highlight someone who has had a powerful (role) in making storytelling alive in the community.”

Westminster’s Latino Festival returns to Westminster Station July 20, with plenty of food, live music and dance.

This is the fourth year for the event and the second located at the Westminster Station, the park and plaza area that marks the last stop of RTD’s B-Line from Denver’s Union Station.

The festival takes place at the amphitheater that frames the station and extends through the surrounding streets.

The festival kicks off at 11 a.m. with a concert by the Denver Municipal Band, the oldest continuous professional concert band in the U.S. The band’s special repertoire for the Latino Festival features Latin beats with arrangements of signature pieces from the whole continent. That performance will be followed by folkloric dances from Mexico and other countries, salsa demos, and a variety of live bands featuring salsa, cumbia, R&B and Latin Jazz, amongst others.

The second stage will feature karaoke, games and more fun. Elsewhere in the plaza, Longmont-based Suave Car Club will bring an exhibition of lowriders for everyone’s enjoyment.

Children and adults will have the opportunity to watch the “luchadores” perform their stunts and from time to time, they will be available for photo ops and selfies. And for the bravest ones, the mechanical bull will be ready to test your abilities and bravery.

Alamo opens Downtown Westminster cinema New theater offers recliners, Southwest food in an art deco setting movies will be shown, and especially the menu.

T

here are movie buffs.

And then, there are Alamo Drafthouse Cinema movie buffs.

That’s a distinction Westminster residents should get quite familiar with this summer as the newest version of the San Antonio-based chain opens in Downtown Westminster.

The new theater, featuring reclining seats, gourmet meals, adult beverages and a strict no talking policy, opened its doors for its first showings June 30.

Alamo managers and staff opened their doors June 25 to the media as well as members of their “Top Brass” — their biggest fans from Alamo’s two other Colorado locations in Littleton and Sloans Lake.

Those fans drove to the preview from all over the metro area — and beyond.

“It took me an hour to get here, but I don’t care,” said Ian Howard of Pine.

“It’s worth it.”

And while reporters took notes and pictures, the Top Brass fans conducted the interviews, peppering managers about the drink options in Pandora’s Box — the cinema’s attached bar — Alamo watch parties, what kind of

Thomas Dunlap, of Westminster, said he’s one of those Top Brass fans.

A native of San Antonio, Dunlap said he’s eager to see more southwest fare in Alamo’s Colorado offerings, especially for breakfast. Schulenberg said he’s ready to oblige.

“We are changing our breakfast tacos from the other locations, going with a bacon-egg-cheese green chili, instead of sausage,” Schulenberg said. “I will say, the french toast is one of my favorite things on the menu. It was developed, like, seven years ago and it’s the one

But Dunlap said it’s the cinema’s zero-tolerance policy for distractions and interruptions that keeps him coming back. Cell phones must be turned off in the theater and movie-goers are warned not to talk during the show. They’ll get one warning if there are complaints and will be ejected without a refund if the problem continues.

“The fact that I know I can reserve a seat weeks in advance for a showing and I know that if somebody disturbs my experience, they will be ejected. That’s huge,” Dunlap said. “I was at a Drafthouse two days where that happened, and not only did they eject the people, they follow up with you afterward.”

Pickleball offers more than recreation, socialization

ames Pinkel, 69, of Centennial, plays pickleball three or four days a week against a variety of players at the Lone Tree Recreation Center.

“There are some who show up to really play the game,” Pinkel said.

“Some people are here to say ‘hi’ and if they play a game and lose, no big deal.

The sport is getting more competitive and we do have much younger people coming in that can just beat the pants off me.”

The sport with a curious name has exploded in popularity. In addition to be considered a fun, recreational game, pickleball has grown into a seriously competitive outlet for many. Today, the sport even has professional players.

“No question, there is competition — and at all ages,” said Don Siegel, director for two tournaments at the Apex Center in Arvada.

There has been a 650% increase in players over the past six years, according to the USA Pickleball Association.

There were 3.1 million players in 2018, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association.

Numerous tournaments are scheduled in Colorado this summer, including competitions in Englewood and Arvada.

Donnie Gallegos and his wife Patty are mixed-doubles players who compete in many of the local and regional pickleball tournaments. Donnie said pickleball can be competitive. “You have beginners and then you get super-serious and supercompetitive players like any other sport,” he said.

The sport includes elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s played with paddles and a plastic ball with holes in it on a 20-foot by 44-foot badminton-size court. It can be played indoors or outdoors, doubles or singles.

Siegel believes pickleball gives former athletes another chance to compete later in life, but it is also drawing interest from younger generations.

“Commonly, people looked at it as a senior sport, but you are seeing some of

the younger tennis players come over and literally change the sport.

“Anybody that is truly an ambassador for the sport is happy that the younger generation is acknowledging that this is a fast-paced, aggressive game. It’s like any sport, it can be played aggressively, and very competitively … We’ve got some really competitive 70 (year-old) plus players and others that are here to have a good time, smile and laugh. That’s one of the many beauties of the sport.”

The men were looking for a way to help their families combat boredom, and they developed a game on a badminton court, using table tennis paddles and a plastic ball.

One possible reason it became known as pickleball was because the Pritchards had a dog named Pickles that liked to chase the ball used in the new game, according to the association.

Another theory: “According to Joel Pritchard’s wife (Joan), she started calling the game pickleball because ‘the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats,’” the association’s website states.

Caddies earn Evans Scholarship STAFF REPORT

Thirteen Colorado students were awarded the Evans Scholarship, a full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies, following a final selection interview at Lakewood Country Club in Lakewood.

Each caddie has a story to tell, reflecting the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record; excellent academics; demonstrated financial need; and outstanding character. They will begin college in fall 2019 as Evans Scholars, with recipients awarded to the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Evans Scholarship has an estimated value of $120,000 over four years.

“Each of these deserving Evans Scholars epitomizes what our program has been

about since its creation in 1930,” WGA Chairman Frank Morley said in a news release.

“Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is humbling, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams.”

The selection meeting at Lakewood Country Club was one of more than 20 such meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation across the country through the spring.

When the 2018-19 selection meeting process is completed, an estimated 280 caddies are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship.

The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Golf, Illinois, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. One of golf ’s favorite charities, it is the nation’s

largest scholarship program for caddies.

A record 985 caddies are enrolled in 18 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 10,830 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. “We were fortunate to have 13 awesome candidates from all over the state of Colorado, and it was the first year we had more women than men,” Geoff Solich, lead WGA Director in Colorado, said in the release. “The Evans Scholars Program will forever change the lives of these young men and women and I am honored to be a part of it.”

Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 32,000 golfers across the country, who are members of

the Evans Scholars Par Club program.

Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $10 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA Tour Playoff events in the PGA Tour’s FedExCup competition, are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Jeffco, Boulder school districts prepare for the new school year

school year. Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder Valley School District stretches from the peaks of the Continental Divide to the suburbs of Denver.

ith the new school year just around the corner, two districts currently hiring include the Boulder Valley School District and Jefferson County School District.

With nearly 90,000 students across 155 schools, the Jefferson County School District continues to grow. Educating about 9 percent of students in all of Colorado, the district continues to prepare for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.

With 56 schools stretching more than 500 miles and more than 30,000 students, the district currently has more than 400 employees. The District covers Boulder, Gold Hill, Jamestown, Lafayette, Louisville, Nederland, Superior, Ward and set areas in Broomfield and Erie.

On any given day, job seekers can check out the Jefferson County School District job board by visiting the website at www.jeffcopublicschools.org. There are a variety of positions in all levels currently open in the district. To apply for a position, applicants are required to create a profile.

As with many school districts, Boulder Valley is currently in need of bus drivers, offering more than $18 an hour for qualified drivers.

Summit hopes to change mental health approaches Experts aim for integrated model that focuses on whole person STAFF REPORT

A two-day summit aims to disrupt outdated approaches to mental health by bringing in experts to produce an integrated mental health model that focuses on the whole person.

The National Summit for Mental Health and Mental Fitness: Practical Solutions for Creating a Culture of Peace, hosted by The International Association of Human Values and America Meditates, is July 23-24 at East High School in Denver. The event concludes with a meditation session at City Park.

More than 46 million Americans experience mental illness every given year. If left untreated, those illnesses can cause tremendous suffering to those impacted and their families and cost the U.S. almost $200 billion a year, the news release said.

The summit brings together experts from diverse fields to build a holistic approach for faster interventions, lower-cost treatments and efficient ways to curb violence and crimes through mental health prevention.

Experts will discuss and present integrated strategies that enhance positive emotions, life satisfaction and spirituality while addressing biological, cultural and economic approaches to treating mental health.

“We’re bringing together incredible thought leaders, change makers and influencers to share their gifts, their ideas, their innovation,” Katherine Winter-Sellery, chairwoman of America Meditates and the summit,

said in the release. “Never has there been a better time to open the dialogue about critical issues in mental health and collaborate across silos, to build innovative solutions, and to address mental illness and its impact in all sections of society.”

Attendees will hail from multiple professions, backgrounds and parts of the world, providing networking opportunities to contribute to a movement that changes the way we think about and manage mental health in our communities.

Barbara Van Dahlen, founder and president of Give an Hour Psychologist, will open the conference. Van Dahlen is executive director of the task force PREVENTS (President’s Roadmap to Empower Veterans and End a National Tragedy of Suicide) and has been ranked one of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to a news release.

Closing the conference is Marianne Wiliamson, an American author, writer and activist. She also is a presidential candidate for 2020.

Speakers will include Colorado’s own U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, co-chair of the Gun Violence Task Force in Congress.

“This is our opportunity as a community to lead the way for us to be able to model what we can do as a collective to collaboratively support the change that we want and get way upstream on this social situation creating a new social construct — compassion, belonging, and kindness,” Winter-Sellery said in the release.

Main feature The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be the first new destination in Downtown Westminster, the city’s multi-year effort to replace the old Westminster Mall since it was demolished in 2011. The city has been working to redevelop the 10- acre site since, leaving the JC Penney’s, Olive Garden restaurant, a bowling alley and dental offices. Construction on a parking garage and a park are complete, but work continues on two apartment buildings and a new hotel.

Work on the cinema kicked off in Aug. 2018.

“We are all here at the groundbreaking, and this was just a pile of dirt,” General Manager Patrick Russell said.

The cinema features nine theaters of varying sizes — ranging from 69 seat theaters to the special 245 seat Big Show at the front of the building.

Every seat in the cinema features the Alamo’s thickly-padded recliners facing a massive 4K Digital-powered. The big show includes a 3D capable projector and special Dolby Atmos audio system. That’s a special system where the audio comes

not just from the right, the left and the back and front of the theater but from the ceiling as well.

“We sat in a screening and it felt like I was being swooped down upon by everything in the film,” Russell said. “It’s coming from a fifth dimension, if you will — all the sides and the top.”

The smaller theaters all feature 4K Digital projection and Dolby 7.1 surround sound.

Every seat in the theater comes with the seat side-service with a full food and drink menu — appetizers, entrees and desserts as well as wine, beer and cocktails. All patron has to do during a movie is raise a ticket in front of their seat for a server to collect and bring the food back when it’s ready.

With nine screens, its bigger than the eight-screen Sloans Lake cinema, which was larger than the seven-screen Littleton cinema. The lobby has been designed around the 1926 Fritz Lang science fiction classic “Metropolis”. A life-sized version of the film’s iconic android “Maria” hovers over the entrance lobby while the entrance to the Big Show is the mouth of the film’s demonic, worker-gobbling machine Moloch.

The entire cinema is decorated in an art deco style and the hallway is lined with movie posters dating back to the 1920-1950 period.

Pandoras Box The cinema’s standalone bar is also decorated an art deco style theme around the women of the early movie industry.

The tables are all decorated with lobby cards celebrating female actors. “It’s the first concept bar in Alamo Drafthouse history,” Bar Manager Brittney Metheny said.

“The menu was created by an allfemale team, the training team is all female, so that’s really exciting. Of the 32 taps, about half of them will be constantly rotating changing and about 95 percent of what we serve will be Colorado beers.”

Although the bar opens with 32 beers on taps, there is room for up to 48, she said.

The theater officially opened June 30, with special screenings through July 4 while the staff gets trained.

Russell said they’ll continue Alamo brand of hosting special showings — old movies, special creations, children’s matinee programs and different programs like a late night cereal party.

“What we do is up to this community at large as well,” Russell said.

“Part of our job is to listen to people because every day I see things people are trying in different markets.

Part of the fun is to design a menu around a movie, but it’s really up to feedback from the community and what people want up here.”

Julie Quisenberry, 76, says the older generation enjoys the competition as much as younger players.

“It can get competitive,” said Quisenberry, who recently was playing at the Goodson Recreation Center in Centennial. “We like to keep score. We sort it out among ourselves. There are all kinds of players. One night I played against a 23-yearold kid.

“I like the socializing. You meet new people. I started playing five years ago for exercise but it was so much fun. I was teaching as a substitute but I quit to play pickleball.”

Littleton couple Patty Gallegos, 54, and Donnie Gallegos, 52, play singles and doubles.

“You can play for fun or also get into the side of it that is very competitive,” Patty Gallegos said.
