17 county jails receive funding for opioid treatment Colorado Department of Human Services medicationassisted treatment STAFF REPORT

The Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health has awarded funding to 17 county jails to continue or initiate medication-assisted treatment for people with opioid-use disorder.

According to a news release, the state is awarding nearly $1.9 million to the 17 county sheriff ’s offices that applied for MAT funding through Sept. 29, 2020.

MAT combines medication with behavioral therapy and is considered to be the most effective way to treat opioid-use disorder, the release said.

Up to this point, the Office of Behavioral Health has funded medicationassisted treatment services in five of the 17 county jails: Boulder, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson and Pueblo.

Nearly 500 people received medication-assisted treatment before or upon release from jail through this funding since 2017.

“In Colorado we continue to increase

the availability of MAT services statewide for those who need it, including treatment for people who are incarcerated, in many cases as a result of their addiction,” Robert Werthwein, director of the Office of Behavioral Health, said in the release. “We know that the risk of opioid overdose drastically increases after a period of abstinence such as incarceration, and intervening at this juncture is key to our efforts to reduce overdoses.”

A recent study in North Carolina found that in the first two weeks after being released from prison, former inmates were 40 times more likely to die of an opioid overdose than others, the release said.

When looking at heroin-specific overdoses in the same population, the study found that formerly incarcerated individuals’ likelihood of overdose death increased to 74 times the norm within the first two weeks after release, the release said.

The Office of Behavioral Health is providing the funding through the State Opioid Response Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and thanks to recently passed legislation (SB 19-008), Colorado has ensured this funding can continue even after the grant is over.

Attorney representing I-70 truck driver arrested Robert Corry is accused of criminal mischief, first-degree kidnapping and other charges STAFF REPORT

Robert Corry, the attorney representing the truck driver involved in the fiery Interstate 70 crash that left four people dead, was arrested June

14 on suspicion of criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, motor vehicle theft and first-degree kidnapping, Denver police reported.

According to an affidavit, a woman was picking up Corry from Denver International Airport when he grabbed her and said he was being chased by Arabs. Corry rushed the woman into her vehicle and drove off, the affidavit said. He reportedly drove aggressively as he struck other vehicles and yelled at people. The woman asked to get out of the vehicle, but Corry told her to be quiet or “he would kill her,” the affidavit reads.

As Corry continued to drive, traffic slowed him down and the woman jumped out and called 911. Corry is due back in a Denver District Court on July 1. He remains in jail with no bond.

Corry is representing Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, the truck driver in the April 25 crash, who has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide, six counts of first-degree assault and 24 counts of attempted first-degree assault. Aguilera-Mederos was released May 18 on $400,000 bond. He is expected back in court for a preliminary hearing on July 11.

Renovate Your Home for Your Own Enjoyment, Not to Help It Sell Better

Sellers ask whether they should renovate prior to putting their home on the market. The short answer is “no.” Unless you’re fixing an eyesore, you will be wasting your money.

So, what’s an “eyesore”? I use the term to define something that draws a buyer’s immediate attention in a negative way — a torn carpet, a damaged countertop, a broken window, a weathered and peeling front door, etc.

The closer an eyesore is to the home’s entrance, the more important it will be to fix. If the eyesore is in a far-flung bedroom or the basement, I’m less concerned, so long as the main part of the house is really attractive. By the time a buyer gets to that distant eyesore, they will either have fallen in love with the house or not. If they have fallen in love by then, the buyer’s response will be more forgiving — “Oh, that’s easy to fix.”

Eliminating eyesores is worth every penny. Other improvements, such as updating a bathroom or kitchen that’s not an eyesore, may return some or much of what you spend, but probably not all. On such improvements, consider the condition of the real estate market.

If there’s a shortage of homes like yours — say, a ranch-style home in a desirable neighborhood — then you could probably minimize even the eyesore fixes. If your home will have lots of competition, fixing those eyesores becomes far more important. This is a topic on which you benefit from speaking with a Realtor, given our ready access to such data.

tate are to sustainability, I hate to say it, but installing solar panels produces about the lowest return on investment when it comes to selling your home. You should only invest in solar if you intend to stay in your home for at least five years. You will get your return on investment from the reduced energy bills, not in a higher sale price for your home. In our case, we installed 10 kilowatts of solar at our home, but that was seven years ago, and we don’t plan to sell anytime soon.

If you make the same decision, please buy solar instead of leasing. Selling a home with a leased solar system is not as attractive to buyers.

As stated in the headline, make improvements that you want to live with and enjoy, and make them now, not when you’re about to sell. It matters little to us whether our wonderful new kitchen will return the $40,000 we spent on renovating it, since we will have enjoyed it ourselves for many years. And if you know you’re going to sell eventually, but not soon, spend the money now and enjoy the improvement!

Improved Instructions For Researching Listing Agents

A shortcut that I created, www.Find DenverRealtors.com, takes you to the page on Denver’s MLS for searching agents by name. Note: If you don’t find him/her right away, try entering only their last name, since they may use a nickname or have an initial you didn’t enter. Last names tend not to vary.

Click on the agent’s name to go to another web page where you can read his or her profile (assuming they created one) and see current and sold listings, unless they have none. Click on their listings to see how the agent described the home on the MLS. Did they list all the rooms, not just bedrooms

and bathrooms, providing dimensions, or just enter the mandatory fields? Keep in mind that the best indicator of how listing agents will serve you is how they have served previous sellers.

Looking at those listings will answer the most important questions which you’d ask in person, but you won’t have to take their word — the truth is right there in front of you. You’ll learn, for example, whether they did pointand-shoot pictures or had a professional photographer shoot magazine quality photos, and whether they created a real narrated video tour, as we do, or merely a slide show with music.

Reflections on Our 4,800-Mile Tesla Road Trip

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about my 50th reunion at MIT. What I didn’t say in that column was that Rita and I drove there in our Tesla Model X. After the reunion, we drove north to visit my sister Susan in Maine, then into Canada to explore Quebec City. Returning from there, we drove past Toronto the morning after their Stanley Cup victory, noticing many “We the North” banners.

Over a 16-day period, we drove 4,800 miles strictly on battery power, stopping at gas stations only to clean bugs off the windshield.

This was our second cross-country trip in the Model X. The first one was to Seattle a year ago. Four years ago we drove to Connecticut and back in a 2014 Tesla Model S. People ask whether it was hard finding charging stations. No, that’s never an issue in a Tesla, because when you put a destination in the navigation system, it identifies the Super-

charger locations along the route and directs you to them like any other destination and tells you how long to charge to reach the next one. These locations are usually adjacent to the highways you’d travel anyway, so it adds no distance to the trip, and the charging sessions are rarely over 50 minutes. Best of all, since we enjoy lifetime free supercharging, the electricity was free. The only cost of the trip was the wear on the tires, various tolls, food and lodging.

I used the Tesla’s self-driving feature constantly to maintain my desired speed and to stay in my chosen lane. Cruise control is automatic, slowing down based on the vehicle ahead of me and maintaining a safe separation. These features make driving far less tiring and far safer. The car would alert me if it didn’t sense my hand on the steering wheel for 30 seconds, which is a good safety feature.

After struggling with depression, Arvada man tells his story Family speaks up to challenge mental health stigma for men

Twenty-two years after he first started struggling with depression, Geoff Grandi’s symptoms hadn’t gone away. They had only intensified, exacerbated by a number of factors — his job, his mother’s death, an earlier divorce and the stress of being a new dad.

But what bothered him most was the way these stressors made him irritable toward his family. And he found himself constantly worried about his relationship with his second wife, Whitney, and their newborn son, Woods.

“That’s such a fear to say, `I think my depression has pushed me into a violent tendency,’ ” the Arvada resident said. “I would just tell her to leave me. I needed to get away, and I thought everyone else would be better off.”

As he prepared for a friend’s bachelor weekend in Breckenridge last summer, he said he also prepared to take his life, bringing a loaded gun with him.

“But it was a fulfilling weekend. I felt loved,” he said. “I ended up not following through.”

When he returned home, Geoff, now 35, gave his gun to Whitney and visited the ER and was transferred to West Pines Behavioral Health, a psychiatric hospital at 3400 N. Lutheran Parkway in Wheat Ridge. It was the first time he’d sought professional help for his depression.

“As men, we need to be tough. We can’t let our families down, we can’t let our friends down,” he said about why he waited so long. “It’s because of society’s expectations.”

Now in an outpatient program with the hospital, Geoff — with Whitney — has been sharing his story as part of Let’s Talk Colorado, an annual mental health campaign by the TriCounty Health Department. The campaign seeks to raise awareness around mental health with a goal of lessening the stigma associated with it and has focused this year on men in particular, encouraging them to speak up about their struggles.

“Men don’t seek care at the same rate women do,” said John Douglas, executive director of Tri-County Health, “even though numbers show they suffer from depression, anxiety and other obstacles to their well-being the same as everyone else.”

Looking for solutions Those involved with the campaign have pointed to the significant difference between suicide rates for men and women. According to the Colorado Health Institute, in 2017 nearly 900 of Colorado’s 1,175 suicides were committed by men.

we talk about physical health,” said Glenn Most, executive director at West Pines, a campaign partner. “If people in the public eye can talk about it, that certainly helps lift that stigma.”

Experts say that stigma stems from traditional gender roles and societal expectations, which lead many men to avoid talking about psychological or emotional struggles.

The Grandis suggested that new resources for men could contribute to the conversation, including more advertisements and coverage about the topic in the news or in podcasts, which, Geoff and Whitney said, have

made a difference for them.

“We need these things showing what the symptoms look like,” Whitney said, “not just for dads and their families, but for all relationships.”

Phil Stockton agreed. As clinician and program manager at Khesed Wellness in Denver, which provides affordable mental healthcare services, Stockton sees far fewer male patients than female patients, he said.

He suggested city leaders, such as police and fire chiefs, could affect change by encouraging men in the community to talk more about mental health.

This would especially benefit men older than 30 years old, who are the least likely to come to his practice, he said, though he has seen an increasing number of male patients younger than 30.

“There’s this new acceptance

amongst that generation that I find really exciting,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m not seeing anything near that for people who are 30 and up.”

He also believes the stigma may change if more men take up careers in mental health. According to a 2016 report from the American Psychological Association, only 35% of psychologists are male.

“If a male client is reaching out and they’re wanting to see a male clinician, and then you factor in insurance, the choices get narrower,” Stockton said. “It’s important to look at how we can make the field appeal to men.”

Steps in the right direction While those seeking to support men acknowledge there’s plenty of work to do, they also feel the past few years have heralded in progress.

“It may seem small, but even the fact that Geoff is sharing his story and the media is willing to cover this topic is progress,” Most said. “I’m not sure that would have happened years ago.”

The Grandis continue working toward progress.

“It’s something we have to work on every day,” Whitney said. “There are still bad days, but there are also good days.”

Geoff agreed, saying the family makes constant improvement through regular communication, couple’s counseling and the embracing of life’s ups and downs.

“I’ve been taking more time for myself and realizing I, as a person, am important,” Geoff said. “It’s showed me that yes, I can be a good dad.”

Community effort makes schools ‘the best they can be’ Arvada IAF chapter encourages families to enroll in neighborhood schools

It was a Saturday, and Peck Elementary Principal Deborah Pearce was knocking on one door after another alongside dozens of Arvada residents, with the goal of learning more about the community. Specifically, the group asked parents for their opinions on the city and on area schools.

But of all the answers given that day in March 2018, for Pearce, the most surprising was parents’ opinions on Peck Elementary School: Many said they believed it was closing.

“The school board was talking about some potential school closures, and Peck was on that list,” Pearce said.

However, the board ultimately decided not to close the school, having heard from the school’s PTA and other community members at board meetings.

“We could reassure people that the school is staying and honored to be part of the community,” she said.

Addressing this rumor was just the beginning. A year later, the group is still working to bring the community together and has established itself

as a chapter of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF). The IAF is a national community organizing network, primarily made up of local organizations and religious groups.

Arvada’s IAF chapter consists of a number of schools, churches and community members, some of whom became involved after meeting members during that March walk. The group held another walk in the neighborhood near Thomson Elementary,

as well, and has since hosted several meetings to determine its next steps.

Members have focused on encouraging even more involvement throughout the city.

“The only way society really changes is when people get involved,” said chapter member John Anderson, pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church at 7755 Vance Drive. With several others, Anderson led the charge to establish an IAF chapter in Arvada, hoping to

change “a lack of connection among families in neighborhood schools,” he said.

“You don’t have anybody to turn to, to take your children to school if you’re sick,” he said. “Community would be beneficial for the kids.”

For Arvada resident Candy Frie, who has been involved with IAF walks and meetings, the chapter represents one of the largest efforts to build parent and school relationships that she has ever seen in the city.

“To this extent, I would say it’s new to Arvada,” she said. “We’re really helping the schools be the best they can be. That’s how you build community togetherness and pride.”

Shannon Fitzgerald, the district’s enrollment services director, agreed, saying that neighborhood schools provide a number of community and transportation benefits. More than 70% of district students attend their neighborhood school, while for other families, attending a choice enrollment school serves as the better option, she said.

“The family might be looking for different types of programs or the school is closer to their after-school childcare or work,” she said. “We always encourage families to go into a school and get a feel for it.”

Chuck Decino lives in a quiet zone along the G Line, where trains don’t always sound a horn when approaching a crossing. But from his home near the Allison/Zephyr Street crossing, he still hears the four warning bells every time the crossing gates go down.

Decino has lived in his home for 53 years, and since the commuter rail opened in April, he feels the community atmosphere has changed significantly. At a meeting hosted by the Regional Transportation District on June 17, which brought dozens of residents to the Elks Lodge in Olde Town, Decino listened to similar stories from other residents — and shared his own.

After hearing transportation personnel’s responses, he walked out before the meeting was over.

“I can’t sit in my backyard,” he said.

“I have to put earplugs in to be able to sleep. That’s not a quiet zone.”

Those residents — many of whom live just yards away from track crossings, where bells sound daily — stated the noise disrupts their daily lives, despite the fact they are living in desginated quiet zones.

Quiet zones are segments along a freight or commuter track where train operators do not routinely sound their horns when they approach a crossing. The zones must be approved by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

RTD implemented quiet zones when opening the G Line and incorporated them along the A Line on March 1.

Even in quiet zones, operators still must sound horns for a number of reasons, and community members near the tracks hear multiple train horns and warning bells every day.

The noise of these horns can range from 96 to 110 decibels. According to Everyday Hearing, a hearing information site, a concert reaches noise levels from 100 to 120 decibels.

Based on information they received from RTD, community members said

they did not feel prepared for the amount of noise they now hear. Many questioned why the horns sound so frequently.

“Quiet zones are not always quiet,” said Pauletta Tonilas, RTD’s assistant general manager for communications.

“The operator always must use discretion to blow their horns when they deem it necessary. Sometimes, the reasons are invisible.”

Pearce hopes the event will highlight what makes the school stand out, including its partnerships with Arvada West High School and Olde Town and the fact that 14 of its staff members are certified in the Orton-Gillingham learning approach. The approach is known for promoting literacy, especially in students with dyslexia.

“There’s always a lot going on,” she said, “and we’re always accepting new students and happy to have them.”

As the project continues, the IAF will find additional ways to promote neighborhood schools while keeping an eye out for other potential projects.

“What we’re doing is a small example of what goes on in IAF,” Anderson said.

“It all starts with bringing the community together and empowering people to address need.”

For many residents, this means they are hearing multiple horns a day, with some sounding as early as 4 or 5 a.m., they said. Individuals also questioned why crossing gate bells sound at the same time and so often.

“My 5-year-old is now having developmental disabilities because you guys can’t figure out how to run your trains,” said Lee Scott, who also lives near the Allison/Zephyr Street crossing.

He raised concerns that the noise wakes his daughter before 5 a.m. some days, often continuing for minutes at a time. Scott believed this was unnecessary and called on RTD to investigate and eliminate unnecessary noise.

“You need to stop the whole thing until you guys can fix it,” he said.

However, RTD cannot get rid of crossing gate warning bells because they are an FRA requirement, said panelist John Thompson, executive project director at Denver Transit Partners. He added that quiet zones do not make any specifications for warning bells; the zones only regulate train horn activity.

Potential solutions Thompson and his fellow panelists promised residents they would look into the minimum noise levels for bells and horns. If the noises sound at the higher end of the required decibel range, RTD could lower their volume.

Tonilas said the communications team would better inform citizens on upcoming software updates. She encouraged residents to sign up for rider alerts at www3.rtd-denver.com/elbert/RiderAlerts/ index.cfm.

RTD will will hold an informational session and pancake breakfast on June 29 to answer further questions on why horns sound in quiet zones. The event will take place at Arvada Ridge Station, 10189 W. 53rd Ave., from 9 to 11 a.m.

“We’re not some organization that just doesn’t care about the people,” Tonilas said. “We understand your frustration.”

Despite meetings to get the word out, however, some still feel more must be done to make quiet zones quieter.

“I accept the fact that we need this train,” Decino said, “but one bell would suffice.”

Former Faith Christian Academy teacher sues school for wrongful termination Teacher claims he was fired for organizing meeting to combat racism in school

A former teacher at Arvada’s Faith Christian Academy filed a lawsuit against the school on June 7, alleging the school wrongfully terminated him when he organized a symposium to address what he identified as issues of racism in the school.

Gregg Tucker was a teacher and chapel director at the school from 2000 until February 2018. The K-12 academy, which is at 12189 W. 64th Ave., has a student body of roughly 1,000 students.

Tucker filed the suit against Faith Christian Academy and three of its employees — Chief Operating Officer Douglas Newcomb, Superintendent Andrew Hasz and Principal Michael Cook.

Administrators at Faith Christian Academy did not return multiple requests for comment last week.

The school has a nondiscrimnation policy on its website that reads, “Faith Christian Academy, admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to its students.”

In an email to the school community, written weeks after Tucker was fired to address rumors that individuals planned to protest a schoolboard meeting, Hasz said “the perception that a recent personnel change was linked to bringing up the topic of racism is simply untrue.”

Faith Christian Academy terminated Tucker’s employment on Feb. 26, 2018, according to the lawsuit.

In a blog post he wrote at tuckers4. blogpost.com, Tucker said the decision was a response to the chapel meeting he organized on Jan. 12.

The meetings are held during the school day and open to students, teachers and parents.

That meeting addressed what Tucker called “a number of disturbing incidents of racism” in an open letter he wrote on Feb. 6, before his termination. Tucker felt compelled to cover the topic of racism after

witnessing certain behavior by some students, including students using racial slurs against AfricanAmerican and Hispanic students, wearing KKK hoods and circulating offensive and racist memes online, according to the lawsuit.

Tucker said students also taunted him with racial slurs after he adopted his daughter, who is Haitian and of African descent.

After obtaining Cook’s approval, Tucker invited speakers to address racial issues during one of the school’s regular chapel meetings, the lawsuit said. Tucker said he later received texts from Hasz and Cook praising the meeting for tackling a difficult topic.

Soon after, however, the school received parent complaints that their children had felt targeted by the meeting. According to the lawsuit, some parents “asked the school to fire (Tucker)” for his role in the chapel meeting.

Former student Ramya Sinha said her mother attended one such meeting, and afterward, the student “begged Mr. Cook repeatedly not to fire Mr. Tucker.”

“The parents expressed they would stop at nothing until he was

fired,” she said, but, “Tucker was the only faculty member at that school who really had my back and the backs of many other struggling students.”

Tucker’s employment ended that February, with Hasz sending a letter to families that stated Tucker had voluntarily resigned and the decision was unrelated to the chapel meeting, the lawsuit said.

However, Tucker said he did not voluntarily resign and was told he was being terminated because of the meeting he had organized, the lawsuit states.

Tucker referred Colorado Community Media to his attorneys for comment.

In response to Tucker’s termination, some community members have created a Facebook page called “Truthatfca” that has opposed the school’s decision to fire Tucker, posting statements from student and alumni about racism they experienced at the school.

Sinha likewise experienced racism, she said, starting the year she enrolled.

Anderson Park to reopen this Saturday Event was delayed a week due to weather

Anderson Park on W. 44th Ave. in Wheat Ridge is scheduled to reopen beginning with a celebration hosted by Mayor Bud Starker on June 29 at 10:30 a.m. The plan to renovate and improve Anderson Park is the first project to be completed of the four Investing 4 the Future projects being funded by ballot initiative 2E, which was passed by voters in 2016, approving a ½ cent temporary sales tax increase.

“Construction on this extensive project has been underway since September of last year, and City staff are thrilled to unveil the changes,” stated Joyce Manwaring, director of parks and recreation for Wheat Ridge. “The plan included a great deal of input from the community, and we think everyone who uses the park to swim, listen to music, partici-

Other improvements include new playground features, and a complete renovation of the Anderson Building. A new original piece of art will be installed later this year. New ballfield lighting, roof replacements, and sidewalks are also part of the completed improvements, and were designed to help keep the park safe and accessible. Originally built by the Wheat Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, the Anderson building once served as the city’s council chambers and a recreation center.

“I am a student of color and as a second grader, I had to face racism at the school,” she said. “I actually did leave the school at one point, but I decided to come back because I wanted to be there for the academics.”

Sinha and others like her, including 2015 graduate Neal Spadafora, have held that Tucker’s termination is a result of the school’s refusal to address racism in the school.

“I heard of Mr. Tucker’s firing shortly after it occurred. I was incredibly frustrated and angered,” Spadafora said. “Faith has had continued opportunities to denounce and turn from racist manifestations, yet chosen not to do so. “ Tucker now seeks compensation from the school, the amount of which “we’re still counting,” said Peter Friesen, one of Tucker’s attorneys.

“It hurts to be fired that way,” he said, “and they said he resigned, which is false.”

Should Tucker win the suit, the amount he’d receive would be based upon the wages he has lost from the termination and from the damage to his reputation, said Elisabeth Owen, another of Tucker’s attorneys. “The jury will decide an amount from the evidence.”

County considers sale of New York Building in Lakewood B Sale could save the county millions in capital funds

The county could save about $7 million in capital funding over the next few years should it go forward with selling the New York Building in Lakewood to its current tenants.

The building, which houses Intervention Community Corrections Services (ICCS) “is nearly 100 years old now,” said Deputy County Manager Kate Newman. Continuing to reinvest in the “old building is not cost effective.”

The sale would free up capital funds that were to be allocated to the building’s maintenance, Newman said.

The Board of Jefferson County Commissioners is scheduled to vote June 25 on whether to approve the sale for $350,000 to ICCS, after the Golden Transcript has gone to press.

Built in 1922, the New York Building, 1651 Kendall St., has been county-owned since 1993. In 2002, the county and Intervention Inc. entered into a lease agreement to manage work release and community corrections programs out of the building.

But the county’s facilities management department oversees the building and pays for its maintenance.

Intervention Inc. has offered to purchase the building and its nearly 3 acres of property for $350,000.

Company representatives could not be reached for comment.

The building is structurally sound, but the inside needs an overhaul, Newman said. The plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems all need work.

County documents state about $4 million has been appropriated in 2019 for high priority repairs and renovation of the New York Building. Another $3 million was requested over three years for smaller maintenance projects that are not safety related, such as the parking lot, Newman said.

To date in 2019, the county has spent $86,000 on the building’s maintenance, according to county documents. That money will not be reimbursed in the event of a sale.

Intervention Inc. pays $141,658

annually to rent the building, states county documents say. According to Newman, that money is used by the county to offset the basic, ongoing upkeep of the building and its property, such as snowplowing.

The county wouldn’t lose that rental income, Newman said, because it spends even more annually on the building’s regular maintenance.

For cost effectiveness, the county originally had wanted to relocate the community corrections services and build a new, more efficient building to house it. Dating back nearly a decade, various companies and organizations — including the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, located across the street from the New York Building in what is known as the 40 West Arts District — had shown considerable interest in purchasing the property. However, any sale was contingent on the county securing a replacement site or facility for the community corrections services.

In 2015, the county looked into a proposed location near West 8th Avenue and Quail Street in Lakewood.

This location would have required a special use permit from the city of Lakewood, but moreover, the relocation of the community corrections services to the proposed location was met with much community opposition.

Intervention Inc. only recently approached the county about buying the New York Building, according to county documents.

Concentrated innuendo brings about maximum effectiveness

ix words may not seem like a lot, but think of the evocations of “I love you. Or do I?” You have a story, complete with conflict.

Entries in the six-word story contest came from California, Illinois, Ohio, and Colorado. From a well-known, local radio voice. From an 80-year old, former high school English teacher, and from a 17-year-old aspiring writer.

I received entries from two notable Colorado artists, and one each from a husband and wife.

Many of the stories were straightforward, a few were oblique, some were witty.

Here are the best ones.

Gretchen Goetz (Santa Monica), submitted, “We have five. Will bring them.”

There was no explanation.

It reminded me of the cryptic title of a Jack Nicholson film. If you have ever wondered what “Five Easy Pieces”

means, it refers to the title on a piano recital program that appeared in a scene that was cut.

My high school English teacher, Sharene Schmalz (Cincinnati) sent, “Bunnies lost to the cat today.”

I replied, “After 80 glorious years of Chaucer, Dostoevsky, Craig Marshall Faulkner, and Shirley Smith MacLaine, you send a story about tiny field animals being confronted and consumed by a feral cat?”

“Yes.” Anne McWhite (Arvada) wrote, “Climate change solutions: do or die.”

Art McWhite (Arvada) wrote, “Big bang collapse: all’s said done.”

QUIET DESPERATION

One of my favorites brought a smile with it: “Why do I read your column!” was written by Parker’s Pete Miller. It wasn’t a question, exactly. It seemed like an exasperation.

Painter Amy Metier (Boulder) wrote a six-word mystery: “If your evil twin wants to.”

You might recognize the name Scott Arbough (Castle Rock), who entered a bit of existentialism: “Where you are, there you are.”

Stanley Gould (Castle Rock) took the opportunity to pitch his new “platform for finding and building local communities.”

After “Knowledge Power. Get Knowledge. Get Power,” he added a few hundred additional words about his project.

The most unusual entry was submitted by Ken Faig Jr. (Glenview, Illinois).

It consisted of six mathematical symbols that translate to, “Not no one equals some one.”

Kendle Frank (Parker), 17, “Be brave.

Some of the companies I’m happy to keep You will be known by the company you keep. y Dad used to preach that line to us, as both encouragement to surround ourselves with good people, and a warning that you can’t hang out in the wrong crowds for long and not expect wrong things to happen. Your company helps form you, guides your actions — if not your values — and serves as a signal of what matters.

But, sometimes, you end up in “companies” that are formed by accident, and you just deal with it. For instance, the first company any of us keeps is family. In my case, this was a great blessing, as my family taught the values of industry, accomplishment, Faith, and support. In the case of, say, the Gotti Family, that’s probably not quite such an unqualified blessing.

So, headed into the heart of summer, one half way through the year, I’d like to take a moment to recognize some of the accidental companies that I’ve had the honor and pleasure to be a part of.

• Musicians. Of course, being a musician is not an accident (though, there are certainly days that I sound like an amplified train wreck), but

New trash collection system a no-brainer for Arvada I hate thinking about trash. I don’t particularly appreciate calling my trash hauler occasionally to ensure I have the best deal. I prefer to spend my time with my family, outside hiking or working in my garden. Also, I wouldn’t say I like hearing a truck a day go up and down my block. They are loud, and I don’t appreciate the smog emitted. These are among a few of the reasons I’m excited that Arvada City Council is looking at adopting an organized waste collection (OWC) system.

An OWC system would ensure my block would be on the same service provider reducing the amount of truck traffic each week. The hauler provides service on the same day, so instead of a truck a day, it’s a truck or two a week.

That’s a significant reduction in heavy vehicles and would reduce wear and tear on Arvada’s roads. Anyone who travels on Arvada city streets knows we need to improve our road infrastructure, and any reduction in truck traffic helps.

I also believe that having one service provider per block would reduce the cost per household. In my neighborhood, we have seven service providers covering 22 houses. Assuming an even split, each provider has three homes. For the service provider to be profitable, each must cover the cost to travel the block, and the more households who contribute, the less each pay. An OWC system would be convenient and save money, a no-brainer for Arvada.

But, for me, from worship teams to community band to various jobs I’ve had, and even people in the industry I’ve encountered, the group of people in my world who I call Michael Alcorn “musician friends” are funny, passionate, smart people who — when not being the neurotic artists we all know and love—are really a joy to be around.

• Church People. This, too, is not entirely an accident, of course.

And I know there are people whose interactions with the church has been anything from disappointing to tragic. But, for me, I’ve always enjoyed welcoming, warm, accountable company that’s made me want to be a better person.

Whether that’s from men’s groups, the music ministries, or the pastorates, I’ve been blessed in that company.

Courage and conviction when faced with conflict

here is no avoiding it, there will come a time when we will all face some type of conflict in our lives. We can could find ourselves in a conflict over opinions, we may have disagreements at work or at home, and we may even be conflicted in our own heart and mind about doing something or making a difficult decision of some kind.

For some of us, conflicts are no issue at all. We take them on and deal with whatever it is so we can get past it and move on. For others, conflict is really hard. For those of us who have wrestled with conflict, over time we tend to become conflict avoidant. We will do anything to try and avoid a conflict or we will prolong it until it becomes so bad, we are finally forced to face it. And that never ends well.

Another strategy for those of us who hate conflict is to wish it away or hope that it will just go away. This strategy typically never works — as a matter of fact, the longer we wait, the worse things usually become.

Some of the best coaching I ever received around this came many years ago. I was encouraged to do the hardest thing first. On any given day,

• Teachers. This particular company gets a bad rap, I think. You always hear about the bad ones, because, as public employees, it’s the media’s job to let everybody know when one of them uses public funding for bad purpose. And, in a political sense, “teachers” has come to be shorthand for an intransigent self-interest group that puts their concerns above those of students and families. But, in 28 years of teaching and another 17 of studenting, I’ve never been a part of a company that is more intelligent, more giving, more encouraging and more selfless than teachers.

• Soccer Families. I know this is a weird one. But, when your child plays competitive soccer (or any sport, really), you end up spending an awful lot of time with the other people who are there supporting their children. This has the potential for disaster written all over it — just look at the ridiculous case of that brawl that started at a 7-year-old baseball game last week

If we are stressed or unhappy about the way certain things are happening, and if we have been trying to avoid a conflict that has been brewing,

in Lakewood. But, for me, whether that’s been at the YMCA or with the Edge, the company of soccer families has been a surprise joy to be a part of. Many of these people who were thrown together haphazardly because the kids enjoy chasing a ball around a big grassy area have become friends, and we have enjoyed an almost partylike atmosphere around the events that our kids’ games became.

It’s always worth the time to take inventory of certain parts of your life, and find reasons to be grateful. And, to the extent that the company you keep influences your days, it’s always important to take stock of those groups.

So, maybe just as an exercise in clearing your mind a little bit this summer, consider the companies in your life, and realize the role they play in your happiness and success.

Although there are a few people who thrive on conflict and like to even stir the pot a little to create conflict, most of us would prefer to avoid conflict and create harmony wherever we can. We each have a unique personality style and for some, dealing with conflict is easy, for other personality styles, it is much harder. And regardless of our personality style, the best way to deal with conflict is to have the courage and conviction to do what we know is right, rip the Band-Aid off, and deal with the hardest things first.

ise you, something great will come of it.” And that “something great” could be just the thing we need to get past and through any conflict we are facing. That “something great” could be the freedom that we will enjoy from finally doing or saying what we know is true and right.

Phyllis Leah Ashton

October 18, 1933 - June 17, 2019 Phyllis Leah Ashton died surrounded by family on Monday, June 17, 2019, in Arvada, Colorado. She was born in Haxtun, Colorado, on October 18, 1933.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph William “Bill” Ashton, parents, Richard and Lillian Salvador, and brother, Richard Salvador.

Phyllis is survived by daughters, Tammy Yonkie (Dave) and Vicki Wolf (Eric), and grandchildren Dawn Yonkie, Ashton, Eric, and Tori Wolf, sister, Leona Hunt, brother, Paul Salvador (Joan) and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis met her late husband, Bill, while working at the Haxtun bank in 1956. The two were married in Haxtun on November 18, 1956, a marriage that lasted 61 years until Bill’s passing in April of last year.

Growing up on a farm in the middle of the Great Depression fostered the hardworking, independent, and pioneering spirit Phyllis carried with her for the duration of her life. That farm upbringing showed in the thousands of hours she spent fostering her immaculate home garden, of which she was most proud. Over the past 26 years, Phyllis volunteered as a bookkeeper for the Lutheran Hospital gift shop logging 5,800 hours while meeting some of her closest friends.

Above all, Phyllis will be forever known for her role as a mother and grandmother. She was the core of the family and the glue that held them together. Her love and devotion will forever live on in the memory of those closest to her.

A memorial service was held on Monday, June 24th, at 2:00 PM at Arvada United Methodist Church located at 6750 Carr Street, Arvada, Colorado.

Keith Brindley Ketner 1921 - 2019

Keith Brindley Ketner, longtime resident of Arvada, passed away peacefully on June 18 surrounded in love by his three daughters Mary Gladstone, Jacqui Ketner and Paula Zavitz. Keith was predeceased by the love of his life, Donna Mulder Ketner. Born in 1921 in rural Boscobel Wisconsin, Keith fully lived the major transitions of 20th century. He lived in a home without running water until he was ten years old and experienced the challenges of the great depression. He was a pilot in World War 2 and worked as a research geologist through a period that his field of science was going through profound changes. Keith never stopped learning or adventuring in life. He kept

going to his lab every day until his late 80s and publishing his research in leading geological journals well into his 90s. He loved skiing, hiking through the Nevada wilderness to collect rock specimens, riding his bicycle and watching birds. Keith and Donna traveled extensively across the world.

Keith often described himself as the luckiest man alive. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will dearly miss him, but always remember his inspiration. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to The Nature Conservancy or help maintain the many bird boxes that Keith installed in the parks and nature areas around Arvada.

One of the most exciting parts of SeriesFest is attending the Block events (which focus on genres or mediums, like comedy, drama or digital) to see what new Clarke Reader and exciting voices are rising. That’s where you’ll come across gems like Par Parekh’s “The Happy,” a comedy about an Indian-American in Los Angeles who gets constantly mistaken as a New Age guru.

“By the end of this weekend, we will have screened over 270 independent series, held 4t special events with premieres from two dozen different networks, hosted by 52 panels,” said Kleiner. “We also created more connections, job opportunities and success stories than we can keep count of.”

Here are some of the best things I saw as part of the 2019 SeriesFest: Screening of STARZ’s new supernatural thriller, ‘The Rook’ We live in paranoid times, with very real fears about over-surveillance, privacy loss and bad faith governments flexing their muscles worldwide. Which, according to Stephen Garrett, executive producer of STARZ’s new series “The Rook,” is what makes a spy story such a good reflection for our times.

Based on the book by Daniel O’Malley, the show follows Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell,) an employee at Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities. When she wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is, she has to follow a trail of clues and figure out who wiped her memory. Olivia Munn and Joely Richardson also star as agents that might be Myfanwy’s best hope or enemy in disguise.

‘He meant so much to this community’ Denver Broncos honor late owner Pat Bowlen

n Jan. 25, 1998, Littleton residents Sandy and David Alexander were sitting at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego as they witnessed the Denver Broncos win the franchise’s first Super Bowl. Following the game, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen handed over the Lombardi Trophy, awarded to Super Bowl winners, to quarterback John Elway, saying “This one is for John.”

Following the Broncos’ Super Bowl victory in 2016, Elway, now general manager and president of football operations for the team, held the Lombardi Trophy and said, “This one is for Pat.” Bowlen, who had been fighting Alzheimer’s disease, died on June 13 at the age of 75. On June 18, there was a free, open-house tribute at Broncos Stadium at Mile High.

More than 5,000 people came to the tribute to honor the life of Bowlen.

The team had artifacts on display, including Bowlen’s fur coat, the team’s Lombardi trophies, game balls and more.

“He gave us a winning team that we didn’t have before. He put together some of the best teams we’ve ever had,” said David Alexander, who has had season tickets for Broncos games for 45 years with Sandy.

Outside of football, Bowlen made significant contributions to the Denver Boys & Girls Club and donated more than $35 million to charitable organizations in Denver since 1993.

“He was a real gentleman to everyone,” Sandy Alexander said. “We’ve been around the Broncos for years and he was just an upstanding man, and it was hard to see what happened to him.”

Bowlen will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 3 along with former Denver Broncos player Champ Bailey.

“It feels like someone I had met died,” Denver resident Hugo Ramirez said. “He meant so much to this community and to this city.”

‘To give back,’ bank in Olde Town opens parking lot to public Lot at 7510 Grandview Ave. will provide free parking outside business hours

After the G Line opening last April, senior vice president Larry Costello and his coworkers at Community Banks of Colorado noticed more visitors were frequenting Olde Town than ever before — and filling parking spaces in the process.

Hoping to ease the burden on visitors, the bank announced it has opened its parking lot to the public.

Starting this month, visitors to Olde Town can park their cars in the lot at 7510 Grandview Ave. outside of the bank’s operating hours.

“The fact that they’ve opened it up is definitely a benefit for the visitors, especially because the location is so central to the heart of Olde Town,” said Joe Hengstler, executive director of the Business Improvement District.

The shift makes the lot the second privately owned lot in Olde Town to provide free public parking, he said.

The first one is at Olde Wadsworth Boulevard and Ralston Road.

“There are about 15 to 20 spaces in our lot,” Costello said. “We’ll be updating the signage that’s there now within the next month.”

‘Living history’ locomotive returns home after 12 years And just in time for Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary

Rail fans from across the country are excited that an iconic Rio Grande Southern locomotive will soon be in operation again.

“It’s an important piece of railroad history, and to actually be able to operate it is really cool,” said Donald Tallman, executive director of the Colorado Railroad Museum. “It’s truly living history.”

Tallman is referring to the Rio Grande Southern Locomotive No. 20, which arrived home June 4 to the museum in Golden after undergoing restoration in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, for the past 12 years.

“It’s been a long time,” said Jeff Taylor, the museum’s curator of rolling stock and equipment. “There’s been a lot of hype about it coming home.”

Having Locomotive No. 20 is exciting enough on its own, Tallman said, but even more so because it arrived just in time for the Colorado Railroad Museum’s 60th anniversary celebration that runs July 12-14.

Rio Grande Southern Locomotive No. 20 pulls into its home at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden after undergoing restoration for 12 years at the Strasburg Rail Road in Pennsylvania to get it operational again. It returned to Golden on June 4 and the museum expects it to be fully operational sometime in 2020.

A narrow-gauge engine built in 1899 for the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad, it was originally used by the mining industry and built to climb and navigate the winding and steep Phantom Canyon to and from Cripple Creek.

There were only five of its kind, Taylor said, and Locomotive No. 20 is the only one left — all the others have been scrapped for parts.

“The railroad was good at recycling,” Taylor said, adding that Locomotive No. 20 has parts that were original to the other four locomotives.

While there’s a significant supernatural aspect to the show, keeping it grounded in science and physics was important for the showrunners, as was developing real relationships.

“We looked for abilities inspired by science instead the way the powers are approached in the book,” Zwerling said.

“So many shows are addressing political paranoia in different ways, but what sets ours apart is the way we develop these real relationships between human beings,” Usher added.

Shondaland 2.0 Panel There’s almost no way to be a fan of television in 2019 and not have reckoned with the enormous talent and influence of Shonda Rhimes’ work. She has created genuine cultural moments in shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With a Murder.”

Through her production company, Shondaland, Rhimes has used all her clout to offer storytelling opportunities to more diverse voices.

Alison Eakle, Anna Deavere Smith, Katie Lowes and Akua Murphy gathered for the Shondaland 2.0 Panel on June 23, moderated by Buzzfeed’s Ashley Ford, to discuss the power of women storytellers and how the production company is highlighting these stories.

One of the best things about Shondaland, the panelists explained, is the company’s willingness to fully develop not only projects but creatives and staff.

Everyone had stage had started with Rhimes in one facet and grown into others as time progressed.

“That’s really baked into the process for us,” said Eakle, head of fiction and non-fiction at Shondaland. “We especially believe it’s worth spending the time now to get our interns thoughts on the books, movies and shows they’re watching.”

Deavere Smith, who has been working in the entertainment world and as an activist for years, is currently adapting Isabel Wilkerson’s book, The Warmth of Other Suns,” and spoke about the power of story to unite in a divided time.

“There are so many stories to be told, and so many people who want to tell them,” she said. “Right now, we’re walking on a mountain with this woman in a moment in history – anything can happen.”

Power, Influence, and Hip-Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def Screening “If you look in the history books, you don’t see enough me.”

If that sounds like a line from a rap song, you’re not too far off. The line came at a panel with Jermaine Dupri on June 23, following the premiere of “Power, Influence, and Hip-Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def,” a documentary about the rise of Dupri’s record label.

Dupri’s not wrong in his aforementioned assertion, especially given the fact he was really responsible for bringing the Atlanta sound to the culture, when hip-hop was dominated by New York and Los Angeles. He’s responsible for hits like Kris Kross’ “Jump,” and Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” and Usher’s “Confessions” albums.

The music and industry has changed in innumerable ways since Durpi first hit the scene, but he’s stayed in the game for 25 years. Along with Jay-Z and Missy Elliot, he’s been inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. And after all that, he’s still in search of his masterpiece.

“We just keep moving forward, and I keep thinking about what my system wants and what my system needs,” Dupri said. “Quincy Jones produced ‘Thriller” when he was 50 years old, so I’ve got five years.”

Taylor and a team of about 15 will complete the rest of the work at the Colorado Railroad Museum. What is left is mostly cosmetic and “fine detail work,” Taylor said.

He expects Locomotive No. 20 to be operational sometime in 2020, but museum visitors are able to view it now as it’s being worked on in the museum’s shop, Taylor said.

Tallman noted that unlike many other railroad museums’ exhibits, which include artifacts from all over the country, the Colorado Railroad Museum is especially “unique because everything is focused on Colorado.

“The entire collection either ran within or through Colorado,” Tallman said. “That’s really special.”

of Locomotives. Attendees will ride on a train pulled by coal-fired Denver & Rio Grande K-37 Steam Locomotive No. 491 and will get to explore new exhibits, open rail cars and experience the Turntable Demonstration.

Also offered will be a ride in the Uintah Combine Car. Tickets for this are not included in admission and additionally cost $25 per person. One free ride is offered to VIP guests but additional rides can be purchased for $10 each.

By the late 1930s, Locomotive No. 20 was serving tourists. But in 1949, it became a movie star and played the role of Emma Sweeny, a locomotive in the film “A Ticket to Tomahawk.”

The last time Locomotive No. 20 ran was in November 1951, and it was sold at auction to the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club in 1952. The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club transferred ownership of the train to the Colorado Railroad Museum in 2006, and that year, an anonymous donor gave a donation to get it back to operational condition. The stipulation for the donation was that Locomotive No. 20 be rebuilt by the Strasburg Rail Road.
