15-year-old Arvada race car driver raises money for cancer patients Arvada High School student supports foundation and Aurora family

When 15-year-old Cassidy Hinds tells her friends she’s a competitive race car driver, at first they don’t believe her.

“I kind of have to prove it to them,” she said.

So she invites friends to races and brings her race cars to school.

The Arvada High School junior, who competes at the I-76 Speedway and El Paso County Raceway, got started with the sport when she was 3 years old, racing RC cars with her father, a former competitive racer.

This year — her fifth racing season — she’s also launching a philanthropic effort: a fundraiser for nonprofit Friends of Jaclyn, which serves children diagnosed with brain tumors and other forms of cancer.

The organization recently teamed with Race Face Brand Development, the marketing agency Hinds partners with, to pair each of its racers with a family served by the nonprofit.

Hinds held an initial fundraising event June 10 at Texas Roadhouse, 5515 Vance St., parking cars in the restaurant lot, taking photos and signing autographs for those who donated to the cause. Diners could also ask to donate 10% of their bill to the foundation.

Hinds feels strongly connected to the nonprofit and the children it serves.

“I’ve been in a position that was life-threatening,” said Hinds, who was born almost four months premature.

“So I relate to them.”

She feels a particularly strong connection, she said, with the family she has been paired with — Karen Smith and her daughters, A’leyah, 2, and Londyn, 6, who was diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor at two days old.

“They said she wouldn’t walk and talk,” Smith said of her daughter, “but now she’s the sassiest thing.”

Smith and her daughters have driven almost every week from their Aurora home to watch Hinds race.

“It’s nice for the girls to get out and do things that aren’t related to anything medical,” Smith said.

The two families spend time together on and off the race track, with Hinds often showing the two girls what’s behind the scenes of competitive racing.

“They get to see everything other people won’t see,” she said.

Through the first fundraiser, Hinds raised $370 for the foundation, interacting with passersby and those who had come to the restaurant specifically for the event, as was the case with neighbor Pat Horkan.

“I do charity events and, when I saw her supporting this, I had to come,” he said.

Hinds said she plans to keep racing as long as she can, setting her sights on NASCAR, and on getting her driver’s license in the coming year.

“I think driving a race car is easier than just driving,” she said with a laugh.

For Londyn, who is now recovering at home after being hospitalized June 11 from a stroke, what has meant the most has been the relationship Hinds has built with her and A’leyah, Smith said.

“It changes lives, being able to partner with a family that doesn’t deal with the same things you’re dealing with,” she said. “They’re truly amazing people.”

14-year-old injured in hit-and-run on Sheridan Police investigating tips, security footage

Police are investigating a hit-and-run that occurred around 9 p.m. on June 8, when a 14-year-old Arvada boy was hit by a vehicle at Sheridan Boulevard and West 64th Avenue.

The driver, who was in a black Toyota sedan with dark-tinted windows, drove north on Sheridan after hitting the boy. The boy, whose name has not been released, sustained serious injuries, but his injuries

have been improving and are not life-threatening, Arvada Det. David Snelling said.

The department is following several leads to locate the vehicle and driver, including studying security camera footage from nearby parking lots, Snelling said.

The case stands out as slightly unusual, Snelling said, because the public quickly provided a good deal of information to the department.

“We’ve had a lot of leads and tips on this, so that’s been nice,” he said.

Conserving Water Is Likely to Become More Important in Coming Years My understanding as a layman is that although one of the impacts of warmer oceans due to climate change will be increased precipitation over land, it won’t be as predictable and consistent, so we need to include water conservation in any discussion of sustainability.

Or let’s think of it as water management, since we’ll also need to contemplate flooding as much as prolonged droughts.

At the level of water district, we need to be smart about conserving water. It’s a practice we need to implement in times of abundance, because we can’t be sure when the pendulum will swing the other way and we’ll endure periods of water shortage.

For homeowners, the biggest consumption of water can be the irrigation of our lawns and landscaping. Even though Rita and I replaced our Kentucky Bluegrass lawn with Bella Bluegrass, which requires less mowing and watering, we still need to use our sprinklers, although not as much. We would have done better to install buffalo grass, which is not as green, and requires zero irrigation or mowing. (I can provide the address of a home I know in Golden that installed buffalo grass a couple decades ago.)

There are sprinkler systems which adjust the amount of watering that is done based on rainfall and ground moisture, but I haven’t investigated those

devices, since I am usually home and adjusting the watering according to need. For example, this spring I didn’t dewinterize our sprinkler system until June 1st because of our unusually wet May. There are other residential strategies for saving water. I’m fond of taking showers in which I only run the water to get wet and to rinse off, but not running the water while washing.

We also installed 1.2gallon-per-flush toilets, which perform as well as the 1.6 gpf models. We have a sensor faucet on our kitchen sink which operates like those sensors you’re probably used to seeing in public restrooms. The faucet (by Moen) does allow you to turn the water on manually when appropriate.

We also installed a recirculation line on our water heater, which saves a lot of water by producing hot water more quickly in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Think of all the water you run waiting for it to get hot. Not only are you wasting that water, but you paid to heat that water, only to have it cool off sitting in the pipes between your water heater and your sink. You’ll also save energy by installing such a recirc line. Ask your plumber.

We’re glad our front-loading high efficiency washing machine died and had to be replaced!

At the governmental level, I’m surprised that CDOT and other jurisdictions don’t install buffalo grass in the medians and on the shoulders of our highways.

They would not only conserve water but save a lot of money on mowing, which can also endanger workers on highspeed highways.

Recently I saw a report on the blue jean industry, which uses an immense amount of water not just to grow the cotton (1,800 gallons per pair of jeans) but even more water to dye them blue!

With 5A money, district accelerates digital learning plan District seeks to meet state-recommended tech guidelines

In an effort to promote digital learning in all grades throughout Jeffco Public Schools, the district is fast-tracking plans to improve technological tools and capacity in schools.

Sudents are preparing to take on the following tech projects in the coming school year:

From conducting virtual dissections to putting together podcasts, students at Arvada West High School find themselves on their devices “in every single subject for every grade,” said librarian Lindsay Garlow.

While students are online, technology coordinator Leah Lindblom monitors how many more devices the school’s network can support.

And, thanks to the school’s most recent bandwidth update in February, students have seamlessly used their devices during class.

“We aren’t even filling our pipeline more than 50%, on average,” she said. “At most, we’re at 90%, and nobody feels that hit.”

For Arvada West and all Jefferson County schools, this is only the beginning.

The school district will launch its latest digital project this summer, accelerating long-discussed plans with the passage of measure 5A to complete digital improvement efforts by 2023. The approval of 5A awarded

• Arvada’s Ralston Valley High School students will develop broadcasting skills, such as studio lighting, audio and graphic design skills, in a broadcasting technology class.

• Sixth through eighth graders at Dunstan Middle School in Lakewood will program robots through computer app LEGO Mindstorms.

Jefferson County Schools currently ranks fourth among comparable districts in bandwidth per student with an average of .13 Mbps per second. The State Educational Technology Directors Association recommends schools support .25 Mbps per student, and the district aims to support 1 Mbps per student by the end of the project.

Taste of Arvada shows ‘everything the city has to offer’ New outdoor space allows for more vendors, music

his year’s Taste of Arvada saw the event turn from an October tradition to a summer festivity as the annual restaurant competition took place on June 13.

Along with the date change, this year marked a number of firsts for the event, with 16 new restaurants joining in and several booths setting up outside the Apex Center, 13150 W. 72nd Ave. “The outdoor area allows us to have live music and even more vendors,” said Samantha Geerdes, events director for the Arvada Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event. “In the last two years, there were restaurants that wanted to be in the event that we didn’t have space for. It was nice not having to turn anyone away this year.”

Outside, event-goers visited booths and food trucks, determined who to cast their votes for and danced to live music performed on stage.

“The best part is just the community,” said Ziegler, who has participated in the event six times. “We definitely want to make our presence known.”

“This is our first time here,” Bear

said, “and getting to chat people up has been pretty fun.”

With more than 100 businesses participating, Geerdes said she expected those in attendance would get a good sense of what Arvada is all about.

“Arvada is becoming a pretty popular place and has a ton of great restaurants,” she said, “so we’re excited for people to see everything the city has to offer.”

‘There’s so much good in the world’ Neighbors, friends support Arvada family, raise thousands of dollars, after husband’s aneurysm

“I feel like there’s something unique about this neighborhood,” Julie said.

“There’s such a sense of bond and community with helping one another.”

While neighbors led the charge, word of the fundraising efforts also spread outside of the neighborhood. Many of those close to Sean, a system administrator at blood and cellular tech company Terumo BCT, spread the word to their workplaces and shared the GoFundMe page on social networking sites.

Individuals have donated an average of $114 per person to the campaign, with 207 donating so far.

“That’s a lot of people who said, `I want to try to make a difference,’ ” Paul said.

hen Paul Marinello saw an ambulance outside the Smiths’ house on April 18, he assumed the ambulance had come for 2-yearold Austin. Austin had been born with an interstitial lung disease, the diagnosis occurring just years after his mother, former Alameda International High School teacher Crystal Smith, was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease.

“I thought, `It’s got to be their son,’ ” Marinello said.

“But then I saw the full-size gurney.”

Marinello would soon learn the ambulance had been called for Crystal’s husband, Sean, after he suffered a brain aneurysm.

Sean had a seizure while getting ready for work that morning; a second seizure left him unresponsive shortly after Crystal called paramedics.

The 38-year-old was admitted to Swedish Medical Center’s neurological intensive care unit and has since been transferred to a number of hospitals and undergone 14 surgeries.

“They told me he had about a 5% chance of living,” Crystal said, “and I put my faith in God. I knew that Sean would fight to come back to his family.”

Healing through ‘the strength of others’ The day after Sean’s hospitalization, neighbor Julie Porter was standing on her back patio with her husband, Matt, talking on the phone with Marinello’s wife, Nina.

“At the same time, Nina and Matt said, `What if we start a GoFundMe page?’ ” Julie said. “So we went over and put it together that night.”

The campaign started by the two couples has since spread to hundreds within the community, receiving 516 Facebook shares and

“There have been people donating $500 or $1,000,” Nina said. “This support can help Crystal focus more on Sean’s care and on the family.”

The four set the fundraiser’s goal at $250,000 to help the Smiths cover Sean’s medical bills and pay for a

home. The family had been preparing to move to a new house when Sean was first hospitalized and will now move in with family members for financial reasons.

“We just wanted to help them get through this huge bump and execute the plan they’d had in place,” Paul said.

Just after the campaign was posted, neighbors also raised more than $2,000 for the Smiths through the family’s garage sale. Friends and family members finished the packing job the Smiths hadn’t yet completed and held the sale, with many selling their own belongings and donating the proceeds

A ‘humbling’ feeling Sean is now recovering in the hospital and participating in a rehabilitation program. The family hopes he will return home in early July, Crystal said, after which he will begin an outpatient rehab program.

For Sean — who underwent his most recent brain surgery on June 3 — the efforts of friends, family and strangers have “been very humbling.”

“I was actually quite surprised that this was happening,” he said from his hospital room. “It’s awesome to have the positivity come through and see people coming together to help others.”

The support, Crystal said, has provided far more than money.

“What helped get us through was the kindness from others,” she said.

“We’ve been opening up to the strength of others who reached out to help us.”

That strength made a list that Crystal recited every day as, each time she drove home from the hospital, she named everything and everyone she was grateful for.

“There’re so many names on the GoFundMe of people I don’t even know. I don’t even know how to reach out to them or tell them thank you,” she said. “They’re showing that there’s so much good in the world.”

A

s a veteran of the Vietnam War, Jim Topkoff has met many who, after serving in the war, “don’t want anything to do with it.”

“There are thousands who just felt so neglected and unappreciated when they came back,” said Topkoff, who served in the Navy from 1962 to 1966.

That’s why, for him, the Wall that Heals is so important: “It’s an opportunity to be a part of the wall and start to heal those wounds.”

The Wall that Heals — a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. — will come to Arvada’s Faith Bible Chapel from June 20-23.

Effort seeks civic discourse, civility among different views Better Arguments Project tackles the tech boom at metro-area workshop

When Coloradans hear news reports that Amazon or any national tech giant is coming to to the state, Sam Bailey figures they imagine an invasion.

“When you saw something on the news, like Amazon’s (HQ2 expansion proposal) the assumption we hear, in letters, emails and phone calls, is that 50,000 new people are going to land at Denver International Airport, come on down Peña Boulevard and ruin our lives,” said Bailey, economic development vice president for the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation.

On the contrary, he said: Most hightech companies starting up or moving to Denver hire locally, creating a multitude of new jobs for Colorado residents and boosting the quality of life.

“These are good growing pains,” he said. “They come with challenges, just as anything does. But I’ll say, though, it beats an out-migration from the state.”

Offering a counterpoint was former Denver mayoral candidate and Regis University lecturer Lisa Calderon.

The state’s economic expansion largely ignores much of the population, especially women of color, she said.

“The real issue is how do we manage the transitions as we go through growth and what are the unintended — or even the intended consequences — of this growth,” Calderon said.

Calderon said she saw how stagnant growth and economic decline affected the state during the last recession.

“But back then, we also had choices about what we were going to do and those were made to the detriment of some people and helped others in

their goal of wealth building,” she said. “So I want us to be honest about all that — about what are the costs.”

That disagreement was the point of a workshop June 13 at Anythink Library’s Wright Farms branch in Thornton — “Better Arguments: Tech boom tensions in Denver.”

Civic discourse The workshop was part of the national Better Arguments Project spearheaded by the Aspen Institute, the Allstate insurance corporation and global educational organization Facing History and Ourselves. The goal is to promote better arguments among people who disagree, especially in today’s divisive political climate.

“Everyone’s views are legitimate; people have their views,” said Allstate’s Tara Leweling, vice president of corporate relations. “But at the same time, people are just going to war and not talking to each other. We wondered if there was something we could to help bridge the divide and help people come together in a constructive way.”

The workshop was the second event the Better Arguments Project has hosted, after a March meeting in Detroit, Michigan, that drew an estimated 300 people.

Roger Brooks, president of Facing History and Ourselves, said organizers were paying attention to how the attendees spoke to each other and argued and would use those discussions to help frame future workshops.

Filmmakers from the Aspen Institute recorded many of the discussions and planned to release a series of fiveto 10-minute videos on the group’s website.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis opened the workshop. Divisions in society — along economic, political or religious lines — are nothing new, he said.

“There are all sorts of different ways that make people feel different,” Polis said. “And yet through our civil society, we have to come together and have these authentic discussions that SEE ARGUMENTS, P31

Family Tree asks the community to count its comforts Nonprofit seeks donations through its #CountYourComforts challenge

Rich Karlis had just wrapped up his second season as a kicker for the Denver Broncos, and he was trying to figure out what to do with his free time. When he learned about Family Tree — a nonprofit headquartered in Jefferson County that works with people affected by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness — he had his answer.

“I was fortunate enough to meet some really special people at Family Tree and quickly discovered where I can use the visibility of the Denver Broncos to raise awareness around domestic violence and child abuse,” said Karlis, who played for the Broncos for seven years until after the 1988 season.

During his 1984 season, Karlis’s field goals meant more than just points for his team: For every successsful field goal, he made a donation to Family Tree.

Now, Karlis and Family Tree are asking the community to support the nonprofit through the #CountYour-

Family Tree is challenging the community to recognize comforts through the hashtag, make a small donation and challenge five others to do the same. Comforts can be little things from being able to turn on a light to having a vehicle to drive — things that some of Family Tree’s clients can’t do.

was standing at the crossroads a few years ago. Along came a fellow with a guitar.

Said his name was Robert Johnson and that he had something to sell, but not to me.

I told him, “Me too.”

He gave me a smile and then he played a tune. I found out later it was a song called “Dust My Broom,” which makes no sense grammatically, but it sure sounded good.

After he was through playing, he said, “What are you asking for in exchange?”

I told him I had a strange request.

I said I wanted resistance.

“Resistance to what?”

“Excessive social media usage.”

He said, “Man, what are you talking about?’

I told him I wanted mental health.

He said, “You know what that means, don’t you?

You’ll have to give up your phone.”

I told him, “I can do it.”

New research shows that “phones raise student anxiety,” according to Craig Marshall an Associated Press Smith article written by Carolyn Thompson.

She cites a National Education Association newsletter that labeled the anxiety a “mental health tsunami.”

She said, “Research now points to smartphone-driven social media as

one of the biggest drivers of (student) stress.”

She referred to a South Carolina high school teacher’s classroom experiment that had each student document every smartphone notification they received for one hour.

“One girl got close to 150 Snapchat notifications,” the teacher reported.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State, said, “What a lot of teens told me is that social media and their phones feel mandatory.”

An editorial in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ journal stated, “Aberrant and/or excessive social media usage” could contribute to teenage “feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms, and anxiety.”

r. Stewart went to Washington. Once as an actor 70 years ago, and Tuesday as a real-life citizen fighting for fellow Americans. Both Mr. Stewarts made history by advocating justice.

The 1939 Hollywood blockbuster “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” made a legend of James “Jimmy” Stewart, who portrayed Jefferson Smith.

The character, a political neophyte appointed to the Senate, crusaded against corruption and found himself facing expulsion.

“I’m going to stay right here and fight for this lost cause, even if this room gets filled with lies like these,” he said during a 25-hour filibuster. “When the Taylors and all their armies come marching into this place, somebody’ll listen to me!

new high-density housing project just a mile up the road from there, at the corner of 80th and Indiana. Ever go through that particular intersection within 10 minutes of the start or end of the school day at nearby Ralston Valley High School? That intersection is already massively overtaxed, and a railway bridge makes it all but impossible to widen Indiana enough to accommodate all the new traffic from Candelas. And, as of March 2018, the city had been denied federal funding to widen the road and replace the bridge.

I’ve written before that major projects require major consideration—that infrastructure must be put in place before huge changes can be properly enacted. When I wrote that, it was in the context of a middle school, re-engineered to accommodate 1,000 students, in front of a road built to accommodate about 40 cars per hour. This proposed project would

He excoriated members who missed the hearing, calling them an “embarrassment.” They should be “ashamed,” Stewart said. He criticized Congress for failing to better support the Victim Compensation Fund. The fund has shorted about 800 claims. It

will run out of money soon if Congress does not pass the Never Forget the Heroes Act. When Stewart spoke about decency and justice, everyone listened. Not just Congress, but much of the country.

His speech went viral on major social media platforms.

The victims’ fund is not a partisan concern. We treasured our first responders in 2001, and we should treasure them for the rest of their lives.

Wednesday, the day after Stewart’s admonition, the full Judiciary Committee quickly voted to move the bill to the full House. The measure proposes funding through 2090.

Jon Stewart spoke truth to power.

He reminded the country we can agree without concern for party affiliation or political ideology. In doing so, Stewart changed our world for the better with one powerful tirade the country needed to hear.

he day before the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife on July 3, 1776 about how he hoped succeeding generations would celebrate Independence Day. “It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty,” the letter, on the Massachusetts Historical Society’s website, reads.

“It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Adams might be proud to see how the Denver metro area is following through on his exhortation, with fireworks lighting up the sky, sporting events, kid festivities and more.

New museum exhibits are well worth dawdling over Summertime offers opportunity to absorb intriguing shows

The Denver Art Museum has opened two recent exhibits that offer another way to spend summer hours, when one can enjoy an up-close experience of color and light, in contrast to the truly exceptional vistas and outdoor experiences that we enjoy close to home or within a few hours’ drive.

Exhibits are in the Hamilton Building, while the Gio Ponti building to the north is closed for renovation.

“Way cool,” one might observe!

“Serious Play: Design in Midcentury America” opened on the second floor early in May, running through Aug. 25, and might be of special interest to residents of Arapahoe Acres in Englewood and Arapahoe Hills in Littleton, who live in midcentury communities. Many other homes in our south area carry similar architectural design, and midcentury furnishings find their way into buildings of every style in the area. It’s said to be a first with its strong emphasis on play, as well as design. Playful objects for adults are multiple, as well as child-sized furniture and playthings.

Darrin Alfred and Monicka Obniski, curator of 20th and 21st century design at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where it debuted, the exhibition includes over 200 items in a variety of mediums: paper, textile, metal and wood furniture, toys, clocks and many other accessories. Items on exhibit are designed, among others, by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller Furniture Company, Irving Harper, Alexander Girard, Anne Tyng, Henry P. Glass, Estelle and Erwin Laverne and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, whose

curvy, sculptural red playground piece is so inviting. Stop by the table full of tops you can spin.

Playful related films show in several locations, recognizing the need to escape Cold War anxieties that were in and on the air daily … New manufacturing techniques made ownership of many items affordable — and a different attitude on child-rearing reflected the inclination to interact with good design.

One finds a choice of sets of “House of Cards” available in the special gift shop where one exits, as well as handsome design books and assorted toys for kids and grown-ups. A related project is “Make a Card, Build a House,” where visitors will decorate Eames cards for a giant house of cards.

Also at the DAM is the just-opened “The Light Show,” co-curated by modern and contemporary art curator Rebecca Hart and Spanish colonial art curator Jorge Rivas Perez. It will run through May 3, 2020 and warrants more than one visit to let your mind play with a variety of experiences.

It illustrates how artists have used light (and shadow) over time to present symbols, images of physical light in the natural world as well as metaphorical, spiritual and divine representations of light. The museums’ vast collection was the source for objects in this exhibit. One has to reset the brain a bit to process the works in perhaps a different perspective from simply looking at a series of items in a row on a wall.

Rivas said: “The exhibition will explore and raise meanings about the emblematic meanings of light and darkness, including a section about the underworld.” Altars and deities appear as well as abstract patterns and the installation, “Corridor #2” by Lucas Samaris, last seen in 2003. (Take time to walk through this tunnel and experience it.)

A major recent acquisition (2017) by sculptor Fred Wilson: “The Way the Moon’s Afraid of the Dark,” is a good place to begin one’s visit on the fourth floor. Next to Wilson’s work — and illuminated by it — is the massive and elegant “Rain Has No Father?” by African artist El Anatsui, with glitter reflecting light — and incorporating found materials: bottle tops and copper wire. (153 by 239 inches.) It was included in and purchased from an exhibit of his work at the museum in 2008 and we were so pleased to see it again.

Absorb works on the fourth floor, then descend to the third floor for more images of light and dark, ranging from Tres Birds Workshop’s “Infinity Screen Prototype for Lumina, Denver CO, 2014,” created with anodized aluminum and lighted dramatically. (Figuring out the display logistics for this one piece took several days, Rebecca Hart said.) It’s a model for a panel that decorates a Denver building.

Walls also hold traditional religious paintings — many with reflective gold paint, that speak to a different sort of illumination. Or, enjoy a Japanese lantern, a contemporary “Ashoka Lamp,” 1981, by Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsas and a gilded traditional Mexican altar (1958 — “an important conservation project” per Perez), as well as a handsome — and unexpected — contemporary altarpiece by American pop artist Keith Haring. A glance in any direction yields a new discovery.

Jack Phillips, Lakewood baker, being sued again Autumn Scardina files a complaint in Denver District Court

Arvada attorney Autumn Scardina is not ready to walk away from her case against Jack Phillips, the embattled owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood.

Scardina’s attorneys formally filed a complaint in Denver District Court against Phillips on June 5 over an incident that stems from June 2017 when she asked Masterpiece Cakeshop to make a cake that was pink on the inside and blue on the outside to celebrate her transition from male to female. Phillips denied her request, citing his religious beliefs, and Scardina filed a complaint through the Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

In March, the commission agreed to drop the case against Phillips and, in exchange, he agreed to drop a complaint against the state regarding discrimination against his faith. Despite the commission’s decision to drop the case, Scardina still had the right to

pursue a claim on her own.

Phillips is most known for the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in his favor for refusing to bake a cake for a Colorado gay couple in 2012, also because of his religious beliefs. The court’s decision last June did not address the issue of discrimination but concluded the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had been biased against Phillips’ religious beliefs.

“What has never been resolved is the core claim that his religion excludes him from Colorado law. We think that is an issue that needs to be resolved,” said John McHugh, an attorney representing Scardina, in a statement to Colorado Community Media. “We have nothing but the upmost respect for religions, but we live in a nation of laws.”

Scardina’s lawsuit states Phillips discriminated against Scardina and used unfair trade practices.

Alliance Defending Freedom, a nonprofit Christian legal organization representing Phillips, called the lawsuit an attempt “to largely rehash old claims.”

“The state of Colorado abandoned similar ones just a few months ago,” senior counsel Jim Campbell said in a statement. “So this latest attack by Scardina looks like yet another desperate attempt to harass (Phillips).”

A $20,000 grant from Robbie’s Hope Foundation will help Second Wind Fund provide mental health services and suicide prevention resources for at-risk teens and youth.

Denver-based Second Wind Fund was chosen as the recipient of the foundation’s first grant because of its focus on local youth under the age of 19 and its emphasis on treatment and suicide prevention, Kari Eckert, executive director of Robbie’s Hope Foundation, said in a news release.

“Teens don’t always know how or where to go to ask for help,” Eckert said in the release. “This is why the work being done by Second Wind Fund is so important. Having access to mental health resources is critical.

Through the services they offer, Second Wind is providing a literal lifeline to those who have lost hope.”

Second Wind Fund provides up to 12 sessions of therapy from a specialized network of providers.

“This grant will allow Second Wind Fund to continue its vital work of providing treatment services to our youth in our community who are at risk of suicide,” Maureen Johnson, executive director for Second Wind Fund, said in the release. “This generous dona-

tion from Robbie’s Hope will have a direct impact on the number of young people we are able to reach.”

Robbie’s Hope Foundation is dedicated to saving lives by cutting teen suicide rates in half by 2028, Eckert said in the release.

“We hope to accomplish this aggressive vision by helping to destigmatize depression and anxiety, while we empower teens with the tools and resources they need to recognize warning signs and exercise early intervention strategies,” Eckert said in the release. “We seek to do this through teen-developed, teen-led structured programming, legislative reform and the support of local resources that specialize in teen therapy, such as the services provided by the Second Wind Fund.”

Robbie’s Hope was formed in early 2019 after 15-year-old Robbie Eckert, a sophomore at Lakewood High School, took his own life on Oct. 11, 2018. The Wheat Ridge-based foundation works to remove the stigma surrounding teen depression, teen anxiety and teen suicide. Walmart, Sam’s stores kick off fundraising STAFF REPORT

All Denver Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs have kicked off their Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraising campaign to help treat local children who are sick or injured.

All money raised during the Denver campaign directly benefits Children’s Hospital Colorado to fund critical treatments, pediatric medical equipment, research and charitable care.

The Walmart and Sam’s Club campaign runs through July 7.

“Our associates take so much pride in raising money for this cause. Each year we sincerely enjoy assisting with this effort,” Lakewood store manager William Roberts said in a news release.

To date, Walmart and Sam’s Club

associates, members and customers in Denver have raised $15.1 million for Children’s Hospital Colorado, most of it one dollar at a time. On a national level, Walmart and Sam’s Club have raised more than $1 billion for CMN Hospitals, the largest cash amount ever raised by one company for a nonprofit in North America, according to the news release.

The need is staggering — 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network hospital for treatment every minute, the release said.

To participate, shoppers can donate $1 or more at the checkout lane or selfcheckout of any Colorado Walmart store or Sam’s Club and spread the word about the campaign via social media with the hashtag #HelpKidsLiveBetter.

his June, during Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association is hoping to raise awareness of this devastating disease by sharing 10 ways to love your brain.

Nearly 6 million people in the United States, including 73,000 Coloradans, are living with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a news release.

The sixth-leading cause of death and the only leading disease without a prevention, treatment or cure, Alzheimer’s kills more Americans every year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

“Research is still evolving, but evidence is strong that people can reduce their risk of cognitive decline by making key lifestyle changes,” Amelia Schafer, executive director of the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, said in the release. “Based on this research, we have developed ‘10 Ways to Love Your Brain,’ a collection of tips that can reduce the risk of cognitive decline.”

According to the release, these habits will help achieve maximum benefits for the brain and body:

Catch some ZZZs: Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea may result in problems with memory and thinking.

Stump yourself: Challenge and activate your mind. Build a piece of furniture. Complete a jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic. Play games, such as bridge, that make you think strategically. Challenging your mind may have shortand long-term benefits for your brain.

Buddy up: Staying socially engaged may support brain health. Pursue social activities that are meaningful. Find ways to be part of your community.

If you love animals, consider volunteering at a local shelter. If you enjoy singing, join a local choir. Or share activities with friends and family.

While some activities require a higher bandwidth capacity than others, the Federal Communications Commission recommends that consumers purchase a 1 Mbps capacity for adequate performance during internet browsing and emailing. For districts with 10,000 students or more, the State Educational Technology Directors Association only recommends .2 Mbps per student for online learning.

As part of the district’s plan to get to reach these benchmarks, the district has switched internet providers.

“We needed more bandwidth than we could afford on the current model,” Miller said. “This is one piece that will help improve student achievement.”

Jefferson County ranks fourth among comparable districts for bandwidth per student, weighing in at an average of .13 megabits per second (Mbps) per student. Westminster Public Schools ranks first at .22 Mbps.

Arvada West, which Miller says sees a large volume of internet use because of the number of students and amount of online learning in classrooms, supports a bandwidth of .232 Mbps per student.

While this bandwidth allows school technology to run smoothly, the district plans to implement further changes in case of growth or new tech-

The Better Arguments Project is a joint effort by the Aspen Institute, Allstate insurance and educational organization Facing History and Ourselves. It encourages thorough, reasonable debates on divisive topics.

lead to a better outcome. And it’s easier to reach a broad consensus when you are not being pulled into different directions by narrowly focused special interests, and keep a focus on the big picture.”

That fed into a panel discussion featuring Calderon, Bailey and Colorado Sun tech reporter Tamara Chuang.

For Calderon, Denver’s tech boom provides jobs but not for the lower economic rungs who could most benefit.

That’s because many of their schools don’t have the resources to train them for tech jobs.

“They also face other challenges outside the classroom,” she said. “Outside the classroom, we see that twothirds of white students have access to a computer at home, but only about 50 percent of students of color do.”

But Bailey said the state does try to use new tax revenues from new businesses to help all levels, with investments in education and transportation.

“We never want to set a tone and appear desperate and say anything to get you here,” Bailey said. “We’ll show how you can come here, how you can grow here and how you can get engaged in the community.”

But Calderon said those discussions don’t include everyone.

“Sam, when you say `We’ are having these discussions’, who is the we?” she said. “Because those of us who are on the ground dealing with issues of displacement, your `we’ does not include `us.’ ” Respect and honesty Finally, organizers turned the discussions over to attendees, who talked about the impact of Denver’s budding tech economy with their tablemates.

Organizers have five principles they promote for having a better argument.

1. Take winning off the table. Frame an argument as a way to understand a different point of view rather than winning or even resolving differences.

“A better argument is about a whole bunch of things,” he said. “At every table is a diversity of opinion. We’ve
