Adopting budget and pay raises, board calls for changes in negotiation process B

Tentative budget gives 7.07% average raise to district staff

Thursday’s school board meeting found some board members feeling somewhat “backed into a corner,” in the words of board member Brad Rupert, as the board adopted the district budget for 2019-2020 school year.

School board members were presented with two budget options at the June 6 meeting. Each option allocated a different number for the cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to teacher and support staff salaries next year.

While the first option reflected the board’s recommendation from previous meetings — a .67% COLA — the second option reflected a 1.5% increase. The district negotiations team arrived at that number after bargaining sessions with the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) and Jeffco Education Support Professionals Association (JESPA).

For months, members of the unions have held that they would not ratify a contract that gave them only a .67% COLA, with some reit-

erating that point during the board meeting.

“I believe in setting an example for my students that I will no longer sit by silently,” Wheat Ridge High School teacher Lisa Lee said, “whether it’s standing on the side of the road holding a sign or standing at the front of my classroom with my tribe.”

JESPA drafted a tentative agreement with the district on May 30 that would allow for a 1.5% COLA. That adjustment, in addition to funds from the passage of measure 5A and scheduled staff raises would result in an average pay increase of 7.07% for district staff members.

However, the JCEA stuck to its previous stance that a 1.5% COLA did not meet members’ expectation.

The union and district bargaining

teams agreed to hold another bargaining session in August, acknowledging that this meeting would occur after the school board adopted the budget in June.

If a COLA greater than 1.5% were agreed upon by negotiators, the board would be required to revise its budget after approval — a situation that has not occurred since the 2015-2016 school year.

Board members said they were disappointed that the teams had not come to a decision, calling for a change in next year’s negotiations process.

“I heard comments from the association that they intentionally delayed talking about compensation until all of the other issues were resolved,” Rupert said. “That got us into the box we’re in today.”

The board then addressed union members’ suggestion that the district take money from unassigned reserves and put it toward a higher COLA. “That reserve fund is there in case a crisis occurs,” president Ron Mitchell said. “I do believe the economy cycles and sooner or later, we are going to need that reserve fund.”

Even so, under pressure to ratify a contract with JESPA that allowed for a 1.5% COLA and adopt a budget by the state deadline of June 30, the board discussed the second budget option, which would risk pulling from reserves to fund the COLA. SEE BUDGET, P3

Ideally, said CFO Kathleen Askelson, the 1.5% COLA — which would cost $5 million more than the .67% COLA — would be partly funded by revenues the district had not previously assumed. Askelson and her team revised the budget to assume $500,000 in interest revenues and $1 million from vehicle registration.

However, she warned that these solutions would likely only fund the new COLA for one or two years, requiring the district to depend on the state and voters to fund the increases in the future.

Askelson said the district would

look into where the remaining $3.5 million for the COLA would come from. She said she was confident they could find the money in underspent money from the previous year.

If the district were unable to find the $3.5 million in the budget, she said, the money would come from unassigned reserves.

Added Askelson: “These (risks) are small in the big scheme of our budget.”

While board members hesitated to risk utilizing unassigned reserves, they also agreed to support the district negotiations team and its decision to offer a 1.5% COLA. The board unanimously adopted the second budget option along with the JESPA agreement. That agreement states that, should the JCEA negotiate a COLA greater than a

1.5%, support professionals will receive the same COLA. The budget also allows for several additional expenditures the board approved in its May meeting, including more than $600,000 to engage students at risk of dropping out and more than $200,000 to fund campus security positions.

With negotiations between the JCEA and district set for August, board members stressed the importance of completing negotiations and revising the process for future years.

“It’s the responsibility of everybody to get very serious about negotiating an agreement before the school year starts,” Rupert said. “I want to make sure we do not put off negotiating numbers till the end.”

Thoughts From Attending My 50th Class Reunion at MIT Forgive me for straying from my usual topic of real estate — I took some time off with Rita to attend my 50th reunion at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last week, and I was super-inspired by the experience of returning to the Institute for what was more than just a party.

It was an immersion into the continuing impact that MIT is having on the world of science and technology.

Reunions at MIT are probably unlike those at any other college or university. Yes, there is partying, but roughly half the events were educational in nature, updating alums on current research regarding important topics of the day. This year the dominant topic was climate change — something I wrote about, quite coincidentally, in last week’s column.

Not only was climate change the subject of Michael Bloomberg’s commencement address (there’s a video link for it at http://news.mit.edu), but the 3-hour Technology Day symposium the following morning was all about climate change. The 1,200-seat auditorium was filled to capacity with alumni eager to be updated on MIT research about this important topic, and they were fully engaged to the very end.

When I attended MIT 50 years ago, the undergraduate men vastly outnumbered women. Over the past 20 years, women have risen to comprise 46% of the undergraduate student body and 35% of the graduate student body, spanning

every academic discipline. This gender equity was evident in Saturday’s symposium, too. Four of the six presenters, including the moderator, were women.

In his commencement address, the former NYC mayor observed that the technology for successfully addressing climate change is largely in place, and challenged graduates to go out into the world and build the political will to implement it. I was reminded of that call the following day while attending a Class of ‘69 discussion about the antiVietnam war movement during our senior year. A classmate said he had interviewed several undergraduates about political activism, which basically does not currently exist on campus. The impression he got is that they are all “heads down,” concentrating on solving the world’s problems — such as climate change — undistracted by politics that divide those of us beyond the walls of academia. My thoughts about that, as someone who was very active politically as an undergraduate and is still active now, is that the administration of the Institute and the students are on the same page about such issues, sharing the same commitment to addressing commonly accepted world problems.

Climate change, of course, is only one of the “world’s great challenges” which MIT is committed to addressing. We learned in Saturday’s symposium about ground breaking research on mass stor-

A deceased member of the class of ‘69, Bob Swanson, virtually created the field of biotechnology, cofounding Genentech. A tribute to his accomplishments during one of the luncheons was most inspiring.

It was hard not to come away from the reunion weekend without a deep appreciation of what MIT and its graduates can and are accomplishing in addressing the planet’s most important challenges. I consider myself very fortunate to be among those who were given the privilege of being immersed in that environment for four or more years.

A videographer asked members of my class what their biggest learning was from MIT. To answer that question, I related what I learned to the chemical

process of osmosis. Just being in that environment amidst the faculty, administration and fellow students was its own education through osmosis. This may be hard to understand if you weren’t there, but my classmates would probably all nod in agreement.

I return from my reunion, renewed in my appreciation of science, technology and what my alma mater contributes to their positive application to society.

New police station will lower accident response times Station on 89th Drive opens as police department’s fourth

With new residences going up across the city, bringing with them new traffic congestion, the Arvada Police Department had a feeling a new station would be in order.

“If you’re going out to an accident on Highway 93 from headquarters, it’s probably 20 minutes,” said officer Derek Nesladek, “which is unacceptable.”

Determined to cut these response times, the department opened its newest station on May 16 at 14360 W. 89th Drive.

Named the Whisper Creek Community Station, it joins a network of three other stations in the city, including department headquarters on Ralston Road and the Lake Arbor and Westwoods stations.

The new station will have a commander to speak with community members and will provide them with most

department services, such as picking up property or police reports.

For neighborhoods in that area, the location represents a closer alternative to the Westwoods Community Station, which stands four miles away from the new station, said detective David Snelling.

The project cost roughly $5 million which, with increased building and material fees, puts the cost on par with the $4.5 million price tag of the other community stations in Arvada, he said.

He added that the station incorporates several environmental-friendly components,

such as solar panels, and has met gold certification standards in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a green building certification program.

“There will be days we will be at zero energy consumption,” Snelling said.

New Jersey family travels to Denver for race Arvada daughter ran Tenth anniversary of race promotes awareness around ovarian cancer

Every year, runners and walkers from more than 30 states come out to Denver for Jodi’s Race for Awareness, many of them drawn to the race’s status as the second largest ovarian cancer run in the country.

For one New Jersey family, however, the draw of the race also stems from its Colorado setting. That setting stands just miles from the former Arvada home of the family’s daughter, Erica Inerfeld, who previously participated in the race in after creating the team “We Love Eggs.”

“It was close to her,” said Barbara Inerfeld, Erica’s mother. “She felt strongly enough to help others.”

With her husband, son and daughter-in-law, Barbara has traveled to the race every year since losing her daughter in 2014. Erica was diagnosed with stage II ovarian cancer in 2011 after dealing with several symptoms she was unfamiliar with and attributed to her athletic lifestyle.

The family was first motivated to establish their annual tradition when Erica’s friends asked for permission to continue running the race on the team Erica had created.

“We told them, `not only do we feel honored you would do such, but we’ll come out for it,’” Barbara said.

She added that she will walk the race this year instead of running it.

“I feel like Erica is laughing at us,” she said, “because my idea of a triatholon is sleeping, eating and shopping.”

This year, Jodi’s Race for Awareness will celebrate its tenth anniversary on June 8 at City Park in Denver, 2001 Colorado Blvd. Started by Coloradan Jodi Brammeier, who passed away from the disease in 2010, the race seeks to raise awareness about signs of ovarian cancer to encourage earlier diagnosis and treatment.

Stressed out? Your dog may feel it too

When dog owners go through a stressful period, they’re not alone in feeling the pressure — their dogs feel it too, a new study suggests.

Dog owners experiencing long bouts of stress can transfer it to their dogs, scientists report in a study published June 6 in Scientific Reports.

The Swedish researchers focused on 58 people who own border collies or Shetland sheepdogs. They examined hair from the dog owners and their dogs, looking at the concentrations of a hormone called cortisol, a chemical released into the bloodstream and absorbed by hair follicles in response to stress.

Depression, excessive physical exercise and unemployment are just a few examples of stress that can influence the amount of cortisol found in your hair, said Lina Roth of Linkoping University in Sweden.

Roth and her team found that the patterns of cortisol levels in the hair of dog owners closely matched that found in their dogs in both winter and summer months, indicating their stress levels were in sync. She thinks the owners are influencing the dogs rather than the other way around because several human personality traits appear to affect canine cortisol levels.

what causes the synchronization in cortisol levels between humans and their pups. But a hint might lie in the fact that the link is stronger with competitive dogs than in pet pooches. The bond formed between owner and competitive dogs during training may increase the canines’ emotional reliance on their owners, she said. That in turn could increase the degree of synchronization.

But why do people influence their dogs rather than vice versa?

Perhaps people are “a more cen-

tral part of the dog’s life, whereas we humans also have other social networks,’’ Roth said in an email.

The study results are no surprise, said Alicia Buttner, director of animal behavior with the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha.

“New evidence is continually emerging, showing that people and their dogs have incredibly close bonds that resemble the ones that parents share with their children,’’ she said in an email.

But she said there isn’t enough evidence to assume that the influence goes only one way; it may go both ways.

“It’s not just as simple as owner gets stressed, dog gets stressed,’’ she said.

Many other factors could affect a person or dog’s stress levels and possibly even dampen them, she said. Buttner said cortisol levels don’t necessarily indicate “bad’’ stress. They instead can indicate a good experience like getting ready to go for a walk, she said.

Roth and her team plan to investigate whether other dog breeds will react to their owners the same way.

In the meantime, she offered advice to minimize how much stress dog owners may be causing their pets.

Dogs that play more show fewer signs of being stressed, she said.

Without low-cost adult ed classes, ‘I couldn’t have gone on in school’ Pre-college skills taught in classes create new path to college

It had been 29 years since Aimee Diehl had last taken a math class.

Having struggled with math in high school, the Lakewood resident believed the subject would stand in the way of her going to college.

But she was determined.

“I was working a job I didn’t enjoy, and I just wasn’t making enough money,” she said. “I’d been stuck for years.”

Diehl had worked as a dental assistant and orthodontic lab technician for decades. But she dreamed of enrolling in a dental hygiene program.

Encouraged by her family to look into school, she found herself walking into a math class on the Red Rocks Community College campus this January.

That math class, which covers various concepts from addition to order of operations, runs through The Learning Collaborative. The program is put on by the college and the Learning Source, an organization that offers adult education opportunities such as GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.

‘A safe place’ for pre-college students The Learning Collaborative runs every semester and in the summer.

While some students enroll in the class based on scores from the ACCUPLACER, a college placement test, some enroll or transfer in during the semester to refresh their skills.

Some, like Diehl, take traditional Red Rocks classes in addition to the math and English classes offered by the collaborative.

For math teacher Musette Sieminski, the program represents more than just a chance to teach academics.

“The students learn how to relax with math,” she said. “We want them F to know if they’re struggling, they can ask questions. It’s teaching them how to be a successful college student.”

Volunteer tutors join the classes to check in with students and answer questions one-on-one.

“I love seeing people work toward their goals,” said Bob Steger, math tutor and retired engineer. “They aren’t there for a grade. We’re working with people who want to be there.”

The Learning Collaborative has grown considerably since its first year, bringing in about 60 students each term from all over the state, said Sara Molden, the program’s coordinator.

“There are people who drive a long way to be here,” she said. “It’s just a safe place if you have math phobia.”

Without the program, college president Michele Haney added, Red Rocks would have to turn away those who did not meet prerequisites — which, she said, is no small portion of the population.

According to data from educational campaign Educate and Elevate, 321,055 working-aged adults in Colorado do not have a high school education, and more than 20,000 of those individuals are unemployed.

Hoping to create new opportunities for these populations, as well as those who do not speak fluent English, The Learning Source partnered with Red Rocks.

Haney felt the program fit the college’s and the organization’s community mission.

Said Josh Evans, CEO of The Learning Source: “We wanted to partner to create an equitable solution.”

He added that, since the program moved onto the college campus four years ago —it previously was held at The Learning Source in Belmar — the sense of community between program students and Red Rocks students has grown.

The woman flew to Denver and purchased a shotgun and shell ammunition at a store in south Jefferson County, less than two miles from Columbine.

Schools across the metro area were canceled the day after law enforcement publicized the potential danger to area students. It was later discovered the woman had instead died by suicide near Mount Evans.

“There’s an increasing number of trespassings in the school and individuals who are obsessed with the school,” Glass said. “All of that is trending up, not down, and here we are two decades later.”

For Aurora resident Jennifer Witkowski and many like her, Columbine High School will always be connected with April 20, 1999. Witkowski still remembers sitting at an Old Chicago that afternoon with her former husband, an officer who was paged while they were eating and called to the Columbine campus.

“I was absolutely devastated,” Witkowski recalled. “It was horrifying.”

But that day isn’t the only connection she has to the school. Witkowski graduated from Columbine High School in 1988 and watched her son, Cory, graduate from there in 2011, before he passed away in 2016.

And on June 6, when Witkowski heard the news about the potential demolition of the high school, “it angered me,” she said.

In a letter put out the afternoon of June 6, the superintendent of Jeffco Public Schools announced the district is considering the drastic step of tearing down Columbine High School. The district

hopes to reduce the school’s status as “a macabre source of inspiration and motivation” for school shootings, it said.

Jefferson County Schools has considered the possibility since the 2001 incident, said Superintendent Jason Glass.

While previously deciding to keep the current building in place, recent events have

brought the option back to the forefront of public conversation.

Namely, he said, the district is responding to the 20th anniversary of the original incident and last April’s threat, in which an 18-year-old from Florida expressed a “fascination” with the 1999 school shooting, according to the FBI.

A community decision The district will spend the next few weeks seeking the community’s input on the plan through an online survey.

District leaders will then hold in-person community conversations in June, July and August, with the school board making its decision based on those conversations.

Peak experience is a case of aiming way too high

T

he greatest risk I am willing to take is grocery shopping in Douglas County on a Saturday afternoon.

It is an electrifying episode of “Supermarket Sweep” conjoined with a dress rehearsal for “Lord of the Flies.”

Get ready for some alliteration: It is carts and kids and confusion. Grandparents and grandchildren. Half are leaning over a phone, and the other half are looking in one direction and walking in another.

I go as punishment. If I have done something wrong, impermissible to my code, during the week, I feel a need to be punished.

It is not Catholic. It is Harry and Shirley, who instilled values in me I can’t shake.

QUIET DESPERATION

I have no sense of adventure, and I never have had a sense of adventure.

Combining risk with adventure is the last thing I would do.

And combining risk with adventure at 29,000 feet isn’t even a moment’s contemplation.

Mount Everest was Craig Marshall once thought to be an Smith unobtainable goal.

Then Edmund Hillary and what’s-his name (answer below) reached the summit on May 23, 1953. It was a big deal. It was international news. And Edmund became Sir Edmund because of it.

Now? Mount Everest has a daily queue of climbers in colorful parkas headed up.

So far this year: 11 bodies.

I have tried my best to figure out why this doesn’t appeal to me, any more than being an astronaut, or someone who interviews sharks in person.

Roller coasters and race cars. Neither. Interstate 25 is enough.

Being a schoolteacher was plenty risky, let me tell you. And it is a much greater risk now to tend a classroom in America.

If you would have asked me 20 years ago if I could ever imagine spending the kind of money it took to get tickets, so HITTING I could see somebody perform a HOME whole bunch of songs everybody already knows with 84,000 of my closest friends, I would have said “no” before you were done asking the question. But, there we were.

Michael Alcorn For the record, the concert was everything you would expect from a giant spectacle like this. All the songs you know, back to back to back, for over two hours (which, by the way, should not be discounted — Garth is not a young man and he does not live at altitude, so…). Some groups, when you hear them live, are a bit of a disappointment; they have, how shall we say this ... pitch variances from what you’ve come to expect. As such, groups like this tend to have giant circus shows, to distract you. Not Garth. The music

was front and center, and it was really, really good. And, then on top of that, there was some very cool lighting and crowd effects.

The concert was fully recorded, and he will be releasing a “Live” album soon—in the Fall, I think he said, and Garth spoke at one point about why he wanted to do this particular concert, in this particular location. He said part of it was his loyalty to the city of Denver, because the Grizzly Rose was one of the first places that “let” him play, back before he was an overnight success.

Think about that for a second.

It’s almost impossible to imagine a time that the name “Garth Brooks” wasn’t synonymous with country music, and trying to picture him having to, basically, beg a small venue in Denver for the chance to play there live is inconceivable. And it got me thinking.

We all know the songs — even if you’re not a country music fan, “Friends in Low Places” is practically mandatory music at parties and weddings. And, I can tell you this: I don’t think anybody in the world has quite as much fun at their job as Garth Brooks. And what’s not

Looks like a fun family fishing season

A

fishing guide I enjoy time with on the upper South Platte River waters gave me a “wake up call” this week.

He reported he was not taking any reservations between the last week in May and July 1 due to an aboveaverage runoff anticipated during June. The high mountain ranges that feed the South Platte River tributaries are holding a significant snow pack and that means a longer than normal snow melt and run off timeline.

That got me to thinking that can be an excellent period of time to keep the fly rod in the case and to plan some relaxed family fishing trips to some of the lakes, reservoirs and ponds along the Front Range. Maybe even add some new spice and flare for the kids to minimize those inescapable boring moments, by focusing on where and how to give the kids an exciting and fun day fishing.

We’re not the easiest bunch to work with, let me tell you.

I don’t begrudge a penny of what I spent for that concert, and let me tell you why. Those two hours of fun and play represent thousands upon thousands of hours of work. For every four minutes of actual song, the words that get in to your soul and the music that shapes them, there are

Provide or rent a canoe or kayak to get them off the heavily used pond banks and out into the more secluded fishing water. Moving about on the lake or pond in itself adds a good change of pace for kids will generate an enthusiasm for their fishing day and very likely invite more catches. You can look beyond the smaller canoes and kayaks and consider renting a boat with small trolling out board motor. This will take their fishing experience to yet another level by introducing them to trolling.

For the diehard angling family, the higher altitude headwater streams such as South Park area streams will offer some good clear water fishing. US Highway 285 off C-470 will lead to South Park via Bailey, over Kenosha Pass into a

number of high elevation tributary streams. The series of small waters all lead to and create the South Fork of the South Platte River. Jefferson, Michigan, Tarryall, Ten Mile, middle fork and the south fork of south Platte offer small streams, with small but eager trout and for the most part clear, fishable water.

Another suggestion by Take Me Fishing is to extend the fishing day to an overnight camping event. The family will enjoy the relaxation and close family time that overnight camping offers by not having to pick up and head home early evening the same day.

If the family is into mountain biking, take the bikes to add yet another twist to the fishing trip.

ummer is here, which typically means teenagers have more free time on their hands. And their hands may often be even more busy with their smartphones as they try to stay in touch with friends and fill the void normally occupied by school.

But while popular apps like Snapchat and Instagram have some benefit, mental health experts agree that in most cases human-to-human interaction is far more beneficial.

Finding a healthy balance of time spent on and off social media can be a challenge. According to 2018 study by Pew Research, 95% of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online “almost constantly.” Roughly one-third of participants said they visited Snapchat or YouTube most often.

Mental health experts recommend one to two hours of screen time a day and no more than 10 hours per week. Too much time spent on devices can take away from positive face-to-face activities, disrupt sleep and in turn disrupt mental health, and potentially hurt self-esteem.

• Listen to music. Or put your headphones in and head outside for a walk.

• Do a puzzle with family or friends.

• Play an old-fashioned board game: Monopoly, Scrabble, Clue or Candy Land, to name a few.

“As kids spend more time on (social media), there is a much higher likelihood that it is going to become more detrimental than beneficial because teens are very comparative with one another,” said Dr. Sarah Davidon, research director at Mental Health Colorado, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the treatment and prevention of mental health and substance-use disorders. “It starts getting really hard on teens, who, even without social media, are not as confident with

themselves at different ages in their lives.”

The good news is that summer doesn’t have to be spent in the pervasive world of technology. Balance is possible with the help of some good old-fashioned fun.

Get outside Dr. Bruno Anthony, who specializes in psychology at Children’s Hospital Colorado, stresses the importance of putting down the phone and engaging in physical activity, whether that be hiking, playing a sport or taking a walk with friends.

“We know that there is a strong relation between obesity and screen time,” Anthony said.

ne of the best parts of summer are the warm evenings, which allow for all kinds of fun activities without the sweltering summer sun. And some great activities are only available during the evening hours — like checking out the stars in the summer sky.

Thanks to the University of Colorado-Boulder and Denver Astronomical Society, those interCOMING ested in a slightly ATTRACTIONS closer view of celestial bodies can spend summer evenings getting just that at local observatories.

“I love the questions I get from people, both young and old,” said Dr. Seth Hornstein, observatory and Clarke Reader education director at the SommersBausch Observatory on the Boulder campus. “There is no limit to the types of questions we get. It’s inspiring inquisitively and curiosity, which is great.”

During the summer months, starseekers can head to the SommersBausch Observatory, 2475 Kittredge Loop Drive, at 9 p.m. on Fridays. The rest of the year, the free public open houses start at 8 p.m. People can even reserve the observatory for special events, or if you’re looking for something romantic.

Primarily run by graduate students, these open houses feature two state-ofthe-art 20-inch telescopes.

“There’s a whole hodgepodge of things to look at, depending on the night, including star clusters, galaxies and nebulae,” Hornstein said. “The grad students can answer any questions and explain what everyone is looking at, and if we have faculty on hand, they’re great for color commentary.”

Founded in 1949, the Denver Astronomical Society hosts more than 145 outreach activities every year. The most frequent are held at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the University of Denver’s historic Chamberlin Observatory, 2930 E. Warren Ave. in Denver.

The society has been hosting these events for more than 60 years, and each one begins with a multi-media presentation from a society lecturer.

Following that, if the weather is clear, attendees can stargaze courtesy of Chamberlin’s 28-foot long, 20-inch aperture Alvan Clark-Saegmuller refracting telescope. These events cost $4 for adults and $3 for children.

Anthony encourages teens to get out of the house and go to the movies or the mall with others. “You want to limit as much as you can those kinds of sedentary activities and encourage interactions,” he said.

Davidon, too, emphasized the link between brain and body. Physical health and activity leads to positive mental health, she said. She recommends even the simplest of outdoor activities: coloring with chalk on the sidewalk or getting a snow cone and taking a walk as a family.

“If our bodies are healthy, if we are keeping our bodies fit and well maintained through exercise, what we eat and how we sleep, then our brains are much more likely to be healthier,” Davidon said.

Research shows that being outdoors also allows kids to get a healthy dose of vitamin D from the sun, develop an appreciation for nature and learn to take risks, like climb a tree. If young people are kept in a bubble, Harvard Medical School reports, they “may not have the confidence and bravery to face life’s inevitable risks.”

Try socializing in person Mental health experts agree that social media benefits teens by helping them connect and make plans with one another, reducing loneliness. But social media can’t replace all face-toface interaction.

“She was getting too anxious about keeping the artificial thing going,” Vanderkolk said, adding that when she stopped using the app, some peers stopped talking to her.

Davidon reminds those parents that it’s OK for children and teens to be bored, with no activity or screen.

“It’s great to spend time with your kids but that doesn’t mean you have to plan something every moment of the day,” Davidon said. “It can mean you just take a walk or go catch butterflies.”

Boredom is healthy, Davidon said, as it is a chance for young people to be “inventive.”

Cycling championships combine with community for Wheat Ridge Criterium

Professional cyclists from across the state of Colorado, spectators, and beer lovers gathered on June 9, for the sixth annual Wheat Ridge Criterium and Brewfest. The event featured several state champion criterium races, as well as a community criterium ride and brewfest.

A criterium race means that riders race around a closed circuit loop — in this case a one-mile route starting and ending in front of Wheat Ridge Cyclery on 38th Street.

The length of the race ranges from 40 to 60 minutes, and riders must try to complete as many laps as possible within the designated time period.

Criterium races provide an opportunity for viewers to see the riders numerous times as they complete laps. The race course was updated this year to eliminate a challenging and often dangerous corner at the end of the ride.

“We changed the course for a couple reasons. One was that we had a little bit more room for a final sprint and also we were having a little trouble with this last corner for safety. So there’s a lot that goes into that,” said race director Paul Balaguer.

While Balaguer works more on the logistics of the race itself, Wheat

Swift water is safety focus as snowpack melts Rescuers offer words of caution to Coloradans in search of recreation

Rachel Kohler loves rivers.

“Playing in rivers can be a ton of fun,” she said, “as long as you’re doing it with full knowledge of the risks — and you have a safety plan in place.”

For her profession, Kohler is an engineer with West Metro Fire Rescue. But for recreation, she is a river fishing guide. Though experienced in river activities and knowledgeable about safety precautions, Kohler joined many other professional firefighters across the state this year in earning a swift water rescue certification.

“Each year, we have more and more people recreating in our rivers and lakes,” said Chris Dinges, a fire engineer with the Westminster Fire Department. “It’s imperative to keep our skills sharp so that we’re capable of responding when needed.”

Rescue crews are especially concerned with water safety this year because heavier-than-average snowfall last winter means more runoff is expected.

Rachel Kohler, an engineer with West Metro Fire Rescue, in the back of the raft, performs a mock swift water rescue on May 31 as part of the training to earn a swift water rescue technician certification. Kohler is one of 15 firefighters who earned the certification following this training.

“There’s a natural allure to moving water,” said Jeff Steinhoff, operations captain and wildland coordinator for the Golden Fire Department. He is a hobbyist kayaker and has about 17 years’ experience with the department’s swift water rescue team. “It can look pretty inviting (and) it’s refreshing. But it’s dangerous. Swift water rescue is the most dangerous thing I do as a

Although usually associated with rivers, swift water can be any form of moving water. This includes lakes, reservoirs and flooded areas.

“Even slow-moving water can cause a fatality,” said Robert Baker, a firefighter with South Metro Fire Rescue who is an instructor for the department’s Dive Team, which includes swift water rescue.

Use a personal flotation device, also known as a life jacket or vest, anytime you’re going to be near the water, Baker said. Especially children, he added.

“They’re not going to like it at first,” Baker said, “but it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

People often don’t realize how cold Colorado’s natural bodies of water are, Steinhoff said. When a person is cold, movements can be slowed and immediate reactions delayed, making self-rescue even more difficult, he added.

“Shivering is the first sign of hypothermia,” Steinhoff said. “Make sure to get out of the water every once in a while, to let your body warm up. Wrap up in a dry towel or put dry clothes on. The key is to dry off.”

Thermo-protection, also known as a wet suit, is recommended for anyone expecting to participate in water activities for a prolonged period of time, Steinhoff added.

Another hazard not often associated with swift water are floods, said Dave Dame, a firefighter with West Metro Fire Rescue and a swift water rescue instructor.

As part of a training to earn a swift water rescue technician certification, two firefighters perform a mock rescue in Clear Creek while another spots from the bank. Fifteen firefighters participated in the training, who came from West Metro Fire Rescue, South Metro Fire Rescue, Arvada Fire Department and Westminster Fire Department.

Swift water rescue crews are also trained to handle flood situations, he said.

“Water is powerful and relentless, and not to mention freezing cold.

All this was snow a couple of days ago,” Dame said. “I’m all for heading out to the river for a picnic. Just don’t get in the water unless you’re properly trained and have the appropriate equipment.”

Baby goats to provide one-of-a-kind experience for yoga class Class at Mount Vernon features ‘cuddlers by instinct’

There’s something about being around silly baby goats that brings a smile to people’s faces.

“It makes people happy,” said Lili Shelton, the wellness and fitness director at Mount Vernon Canyon Club in Golden. “And the goal is to make people feel good.”

The club will be hosting its first goat yoga event on June 22.

“Goat yoga is a trend right now, at least in Colorado,” Shelton said. “It’s got a one-of-a-kind appeal to it.”

Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga, a locally owned and operated small business that got its start in 2017, will be supplying the baby goats and yoga instructor. There will be eight Nigerian Dwarf goats that are about eight months old, which come from Skål Farm in Golden.

From birth, baby goats instinctively cuddle with their mother, said Jim Naron, owner of Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga.

“They’re trained snugglers,” he said. “They’ll come and interact with anybody.”

The classes are 65 minutes long, and include a 45-minute yoga workout and 20 minutes of cuddle time with the goats, accompanied by live fiddle music.

Interaction with the goats will be happening the entire time, Naron said, but during the yoga class, people are focusing on the poses. The cuddle time is offered so people can spend time petting the goats and taking pictures with them, Naron added.

Because goats are intelligent creatures, people tend to relate to their behavior as they do with dogs, Naron said.

“They’re silly,” he said, “and they cultivate smiles and happiness.”

Naron was inspired to start Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga after reading an article about a woman in Oregon who was doing animal assisted therapy with goats. A former teacher who was hosting a variety of events for supplemental income at the time, reached out to a farmer to rent five goats for a yoga class he was hosting.

Today, Naron works with four different farms that provide the goats, and Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga travels across Colorado to provide the service for large and private events.

Jeffco Athletics inducts four new members into Hall of Fame coach for four years and four more years as the head girls basketball coach.

ARVADA — Jeffco Public Schools held is 33rd annual Hall of Fame banquet Thursday, June 6, at the Arvada Center.

Mary Anderson, Ron Castagna, Sue Ellis and Rudy Martin joined the Jeffco Athletic Hall of Fame that now numbers 208 members. The hall of fame started in 1986 with the charter class of Darrel Hafling, Tom Hancock, Vernon Heaston, Bill Lewis and Mel Schwartz.

This year’s class includes several groundbreaking athletics, coaches and administers who have helped shape the long and rich athletic tradition in Jeffco.

MARY ANDERSON Anderson was a physical education teacher at Wheat Ridge High School and North Arvada Middle School from 1983 to 2005. She was the Farmers’ varsity volleyball coach from 1983 to 1989.

In 1987, Anderson coached Wheat Ridge to the Class 4A state champion.

Wheat Ridge was ranked 13th nationally by Volleyball Magazine. Anderson was named the Jeffco Volleyball Coach of the Year, Colorado High School Volleyball Coach of the Year and was the Volleyball All-State Coach in 1987.

In 2005, the new secondary gymnasium at Wheat Ridge High School was named the “Anderson Gymnasium”.

RON CASTAGNA Castagna was the principal at Lakewood High School from 1996 to 2014.

During his tenure at Lakewood there was tremendous growth in enrollment and the creation of the International Baccalaureate program.

SUE ELLIS Ellis was a trailblazer for female high school student-athletics in the 1970s when Title IX went into effect.

The Golden High School graduate excelled in volleyball and basketball where she was a two-time all-state player in both sports.

During the 1975-76 basketball season, Ellis led the Demons to the AAA state championship title. It was the first year that girls basketball was a sanctioned sport by the Colorado High School Activities Association.

Ellis went on to play basketball at Colorado State University where she was a four-year starter and three-time

captain. She also went on to coach in Jeffco for several years.

RUDY MARTIN Martin first made a name for himself at Lakewood High School on the baseball field as an all-state catcher on the Tigers’ AAA state championship team in 1970.

He then went on to the University of Northern Colorado where he went into education with a focus on special education and physical education.

Martin had a long coaching career that spans more than 40 years.

Martin coached Columbine High School’s boys basketball team to the Class 5A state title in 1997. He racked up 226 wins during his head coaching stint with the Rebels. Martin spent time at Green Mountain High School where he was the head boys basketball

Summer is a prime time for educators seeking new positions

While students across the nation are celebrating the completion of another school year and getting into summer fun, teachers and educations professionals may only be taking a short break as they prepare for a new position.

When it comes to searching for a new job, most industries are essentially stagnant during the summer months. CEOs taking vacations, budgets looking thin for a new fiscal year, and many plan on waiting until the New Year. However, that’s opposite for schools and colleges.

Schools have just under three months to make sure staffing levels are where they need them to be, which means they will be updating the “help wanted” section of their websites

and going out searching.

For the educator, that means updating resumes with current information, looking in districts near your home, and researching each district and what they have to offer. Start submitting for the open positions that fit your goals of advancement or change.

Districts aim to get new stuff under contract quickly, which means your window for finding the new position is only open for so long. Most schools conduct job interviews throughout the month of June and in early July before administrators take a short break themselves.

If you want to wait a bit longer to see what happens with your current position, late July and early August are also big interview months in education. Administrators are returning from a short break and reviewing positions that are still open and assessing the school’s needs.
