Lee and his team have already gathered some feedback online and through previous events.

Community members will have additional opportunities to give their input on June 8 at the Second Saturdays Concert in Olde Town and on June 26 at Gold Strike Park.

Lee said the city will likely plan another opportunity for August.

City employees will also gather feedback through an online survey posted on the Current Projects page of speakup.arvada.org. The survey will be open through June 30.

“Clear Creek exists as a jewel in the metro area,” Lee said. “People are excited.

They know how important it is for us to do some preservations efforts and some enhancement.”

Lee said the city and its partners aim to complete the planning stage by the fall of 2019, after which they will apply for grants to fund upcoming projects.

“A lot of master plans are completed, and then they go on the shelf and nothing tangible ever happens,” Lee said. “I wanted to do these opportunity sites because those

This month, city personnel will seek community input on Arvada’s Clear Creek Corridor Master Plan, which aims to enhance the environmental and recreational experiences for residents along the Clear Creek Corridor.

Since planning began in November 2018, the city has collaborated with the City of Denver, Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District and other partners to conduct a study and draft a plan.

“We all got together and walked the whole corridor,” said senior landscape architect Mike Lee. “We looked at some of these specific sites where we could do something more.”

Through the study, the planning team has identified three opportunity sites for environmental and recreational changes, Lee said.

The first is located at the trail network at 52nd Avenue and Marshall Street. The city would work with Denver to reroute the Clear Creek Trail so that walkers can get closer to the water.

“Right now, it goes through a neighborhood,” Lee said, “so we want to move it along the Clear Creek and do some stream crossings.”

Lee said grant money for this site could also go toward preserving the blue bedrock formation found along the creek in that area.

Lee and his team are also considering plans for their second opportunity site at Gold Strike Park, 5500 W.

Three plead not guilty to gruesome murder Victim Cymone Duran’s body was found burned in field near Golden STAFF REPORT

Abel Gallegos, 35, Alonso Quintana, 27, and Rene Rosales, 35, the three men accused of murdering 27-yearold Cymone Reyna Duran, pleaded not guilty at an arraignment hearing on May 31 before a

Jefferson County judge.

At arraignment hearings, criminal defendants are formally advised of their charges and are asked to enter a plea. The men entered the courtroom in orange jumpsuits, shackled. The family of Duran was in attendance.

Duran’s body was found in Golden on Nov. Quintana 5, last year. The 28-yearold was the mother of two, and she had been shot multiple times before being set ablaze. Investigators believe her death was the

result of someone who was seeking revenge. Duran was working with law enforcement as a witness to an attempted murder case in Adams County.

Gallegos and Rosales face charges of first-degree murder, tampering with a deceased human body, second-degree arson and tampering with evidence. Quintana faces charges of Rosales first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, aggravated intimidation of a witness and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Questions All Sellers Should Ask When Selecting Their Listing Agent

Do you know what to look for in a listing agent, and the questions to ask during a listing presentation?

You’ll probably want to know their level of experience, competence and success in selling similar properties, hopefully within your city or neighborhood.

Like you, I monitor the real estate activity where I live, and I’m astonished how many homes are listed by agents I’ve never heard of. As I write this on Monday, there are 50 active or pending listings in my area, represented by 40 different agents!

No agent has more than three listings. And despite practicing real estate here for 17 years, I only recognize the names of 11 of them.

This is typical of every city. Where

did the sellers find all those different agents to list their homes? Many, I suspect are friends and family — every agent’s biggest “competitor.”

In some cases, the seller had just bought their replacement home elsewhere and was convinced by that listing agent to list their current home — not the best decision if that agent is unfamiliar with your neighborhood, lives far away, and is unable to show the home on short notice, answer questions from buyers, or keep your brochure box well stocked.

Or perhaps the agent sent a letter or taped a note to your door claiming to have a buyer for your home. That earned him or her an interview, in which the agent said that

his buyer found another home but convinced you to list with them.

Let’s say, however, that you want to interview listing agents and make a rational hiring decision.

First, choose the agents to interview based on their location and experience in your neighborhood or city. Second, study their active/sold listings to see (1) their geographic distribution and (2) how well they are presented on the MLS. For this you can use a shortcut I created, www.FindDenverRealtors.com, which takes you to the page on Denver’s MLS for searching agents by name. In my case, you’d see a profile and my active, pending and sold listings. Search for the agent(s) you’re considering. Read their profile, if they created one. Look at their current and sold listings. Click on one or more of them to see how they described

Let’s Hear About Climate Change, Our Planet’s Most Pressing Issue Colorado has been blessed with probably the least impact of climate change, but eventually it will catch up with us. Meanwhile, we watch, stunned, not only by the tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and flooding in other sections of the country, but also by the failure of the major networks to mention climate change as the culprit and to point out that it will only get worse over time.

Over 5 years ago, in 2014, the headline on my column was “We May Have Already Passed the Tipping Point on Climate Change.” Here’s what I wrote then: Each January, political leaders shower us with speeches on the State of the Union, the State, the City and other jurisdictions.

No one presents a State of the Planet speech, but if someone did, I suspect climate change would be topic #1 — and for good reason.

My friend and mentor, Steve Stevens, forwarded the chart at right showing the decline in late summer Arctic sea ice. If it isn’t a wake-up call regarding climate change, I don’t know what is.

I don’t have a degree in science, but I do understand science enough to know this chart’s significance.

If you studied any science — or own an automobile — you know that white surfaces reflect

solar heat, whereas dark surfaces (open ocean, for example) absorb it. The loss of sea ice does not just indicate global warming, it accelerates it, which makes one worry whether it’s already too late to reverse the effects of human-caused global warming.

Climate change deniers may celebrate the fact that the Arctic Ocean is becoming increasingly navigable in the summer, but they need to connect the dots between global warming and the whipsawing we now see in our day-to-day weather.

I’d be curious to see the statistics on how many times the network news programs featured severe weather reports in 2013 versus previous years. I can’t re-

member an evening in which weather wasn’t a major or lead story.

Our earth’s climate has been destabilized. Had you heard of the polar vortex before this year? I hadn’t. The uninformed will say that our cold weather proves that the earth is not warming, but how naïve is that? It’s global warming that is causing extremes, both of temperature and precipitation — which is caused by warming. I don’t hear them questioning El Nino, in which natural changes in ocean temperature affect climate.

Is there time to reverse this situation?

Maybe not. But we certainly don’t have time to debate its existence with climate change deniers. [End of my 2014 column] Night after night, we see reports of unprecedented “severe weather” around the country. I’m waiting for the networks to connect the dots for viewers and show how this is the result of human-caused climate change.

the home on the MLS. Did they list all the rooms, not just bedrooms and bathrooms, providing dimensions and descriptions, or just enter the mandatory fields? Keep in mind that, the best indicator of how they will serve you is how they have served previous sellers.

Looking at those listings will answer the most important questions which you’d ask in person, but you won’t have to take their word — the truth is there in front of you. You’ll learn, for example, whether they did point-and-shoot pictures or had a professional photographer shoot HDR (magazine quality) photos, and whether they created a narrated video tour or just a slide show with music.

Having chosen who to interview that way, ask these questions of those you invite into your home for an interview: What commission percentage do you charge? Keep in mind, there is no standard commission. It’s totally negotiable, and the industry average is in the mid5’s, not 6%.

See whether the agent volunteers that they reduce their commission when they don’t have to pay 2.8% to a buyer’s agent. If you have to ask them, consider it a red flag. They hoped you wouldn’t.

Ask the agent whether he or she will discount their commission if you hire them to represent you in the purchase of your replacement home.

Hopefully the candidate will have researched the market and make a sound recommendation of listing price. Beware of agents who inflate their suggested listing price so you will list with them.

When setting the appointment, ask the agent to bring a spreadsheet of their sold listings with dates, days on market, listing price and sold price.

Lastly, how will they promote your listing? Measure it against what we do at www.HowWeMarketListings.info.

Mines students connect science with social studies for seventh-grade project Drake Middle Schoolers learn about the science of the atom bomb

A group of seventh graders learned something last school year that they found quite interesting: the difference between fusion and fission in an atom bomb.

“It’s interesting how you can either put together (fusion) or break apart (fission) a small, little atom,” said seventh-grader Evangelene Jones, “and it can make a big explosion.”

For about two weeks, the students studied the A-bomb as part of their honors social studies class at Drake Middle School in Arvada. The applied learning tied into the curriculum for the students to have an understanding of how countries interact with each other.

The students were simultaneously learning about the holocaust in their language arts class, so Carine Lockwood, the sixth- and seventh-grade honors social studies teacher, wanted to combine those studies with science and apply it to their social studies lessons.

CHRISTY STEADMAN tions between subject areas,” Lockwood said. But, she added, “the best part was their excitement — even up through the last week of school.”

The 27 students brainstormed a variety of questions they wanted answered — which countries have nukes, how does the radiation affect the land, why did the U.S. drop the bombs, for example; and were tasked with others — describe reasons for global interdependence, for example.

The students also wanted to learn about the science of the atom bomb, Lockwood said.

“I served as the facilitator of their questions,” she said, so for the difficult science-based questions, Lockwood called in a couple of experts — two PhD students from the Colorado School of Mines.

Erin Bertelsen and Kevin Pastoor are working toward their PhDs in radiochemistry. The two came in and

taught an entire class about plutonium, the different types of nuclear weapons and explained how splitting atoms works.

“We are especially excited about how much they (the seventh graders) learned and retained with this not being a science class,” Bertelsen said.

“Being able to share our knowledge of science with interested young students gives me hope they’ll continue exploring all of the questions they have.”

After the initial brainstorming, the students were divided into five groups to each tackle a broader topic in which all of their questions — with some additional questions added by Lockwood — were answered.

The project’s cumulation was each of the five groups presenting on their various topics — the history of the A-bomb dropping and the makeup of an atom bomb, for example, Lockwood said.

Before the project, Matteo Bashford and his fellow students in the honors social studies class didn’t know much about the science or the politics behind the A-bomb, he said.

But it helped to learn about all of that to apply it to how countries interact today, Bashford said.

His classmate Griffin Leapley agreed.

“It’s always good to have a better understanding about what’s going on in our world,” Leapley said.

A tip for spelling bee success: ‘Focus on your word’ Arvada resident among 15 Coloradans participating in national bee

The week of May 26 saw 562 students travel to Maryland for the Scripps National Spelling Bee — but for second-time national competitor Lauren Guo, 13, the trip was becoming a tradition.

“I’ve just always been good at spelling,” said the Arvada resident, who represented Wayne Carle Middle School in the bee. “I study during as much spare time as I have, usually every day.”

Guo and her competitors qualified for the bee by placing in a regional competition. The national competition consisted of a preliminary test and 20 rounds of on-stage spelling, breaking a record when eight champions were crowned after the competitors advanced through the entirety of the list prepared for the competition.

“I’m so shocked about that,” Guo said. “This year was so competitive.”

Fifteen of this year’s spellers came from Colorado schools, correctly spelling words including executrix, proclitic and labradoodle as the rounds continued.

Likewise, principal John McCluskey of Centennial Middle School praised the school’s representative, sixth-grader Bella Brown, for her accomplishments in the bee.

“She represents the school really

well academically and as a whole person,” he said. “She’s very humble and hardworking.”

Two Colorado students — Guo and Cameron Keith from Boulder Valley School District — joined 48 others in the finals of the bee, which began in round 4. Both students advanced to round 5, where Guo was eliminated on the word “lychnoscope” and Keith was eliminated on “eschalot.”

For Guo, the trip to Maryland allowed not only for a chance to show her spelling skills, but also a chance to make memories with her mother and father.

“It’s a lot of fun to be here,” she said. “There’s plenty of extra time to do things.”

Without agreement on salary, union and district must meet in August Cost-of-living increase at core of disagreement

With the Board of Education adopting its budget on June 6, district leaders and members of district unions — the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) and Jeffco Educational Support Professionals Association (JESPA) — have put in hours of discussion around school staff members’ contract for the coming school year.

However, by the end of the six-hour May 29 bargaining session between the district and the JCEA, the groups had not come to an agreement on the costof-living adjustment, or COLA, that will be added to staff member salaries.

A COLA would combine with the raises staff members receive for advancing along the district’s salary schedule, as well as raises associated

with the passage of measure 5A, to make up each staff member’s total raise for the 2019-2020 school year.

While the district has held that the budget only allows for a .67 or 1.5% COLA, JCEA members feel a 5% COLA would be more reasonable, said Christy Yacano, JCEA bargaining chair.

“Part of investing in our students’ futures is keeping experienced teachers who understand our communities,” Yacano said. “Looking around at other districts and the COLAs they’re getting, we need to be more competitive.”

Members on both JCEA and JESPA bargaining teams have suggested that the district should consider taking money from its reserves to fund a higher COLA. JESPA bargaining team members agreed to have a 1.5% COLA drafted into their negotiated agreement, meaning the group will not have to bargain again after the summer.

“The district agreed to language that they would honor a higher COLA if another employee group agrees on a higher percentage,” said Sharleen Farmer, JESPA executive director.

She added that JESPA members are excited about other agreements the groups reached, including the decision to increase the starting salary for support professionals.

“We think it will help with employee shortages,” she said. “Since we had our whole contract up for negotiation here, we felt we would be at a good place with this.”

In the meantime, the JCEA will continue to bargain for a COLA greater than 1.5%, Yacano said — an increase that, if agreed upon, would be reflected for all district employees in the district’s revised budget.

similar reasons in previous years, Yacano said, this is the first time the situation has occurred in her four years on the bargaining team.

“It’s not necessarily unusual, but we’re getting dangerously close to the end of the contract year in August,” she said.

If the groups cannot come to a decision by the time staff members receive their first paychecks at the end of September, those employees will receive the same amount they received in the 2018-2019 school year, she said.

She added that the district and union could opt to go to an impasse, which would allow a mediator to help make the decision. In this case, the bargaining team would be asked to prove that the district has the money to fund their requests; the district would be asked to prove that it does not have the money.

“We’re determined not to go to impasse,” Yacano said. “Either the money’s there or it’s not. We think we can get this resolved.”

Paulina Erices started working for Jefferson County Public Health a few years ago as a maternal child health specialist. Erices began to hear a common pattern with some of the Spanish speaking families she worked with — they had difficulties finding services in their language.

Some families have to drive far outside of Jefferson County to receive certain services, and many families take the bus, making their commute a day long trip.

“Who are we kidding that we are a white county? Communities are disconnected, and the isolation their families are experiencing is huge,” said Erices. According to the United States Census Bureau, 15.4 percent of Jefferson County residents are Hispanic, or Latino.

Erices works with Adelante Jeffco, a network of community members and organizations like Jeffco Public

Schools, Jeffco Public Health, Jeffco Public Libraries and the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition. The network aims to identify opportunities and strategies to offer services to Latino families.

Adelante Jeffco envisions amplifying the capacity of Jeffco Latinos to build and lead solutions and promoting strategies to add cultural relevant services in organizations to provide better services to the community.

Before Lakewood’s Earth Day celebration in April, Adelante Jeffco gathered Spanish speakers to attend a nature walk before going to the event together.

“Adelante Jeffco gives me the opportunity to grow internally, and the opportunity to grow as a person. To be part of Adelante Jeffco provides me with the tools to have confidence in myself and impact my community,” said Cynthia Zapata, the coordinator for Adelante Jeffco.

The network was named a public health champion by Jeffco Public Health in April for working to improve the health of Jefferson County residents.

“I feel very proud to be part of (Adelante Jeffco). I feel it is necessary for our community, and it is accessible to all,” said Esther Caldera, an Adelante Jeffco member.

Jeffco families welcome shift to free full-day kindergarten Fees no longer apply for kindergarten students

In the week from May 21 to May 28, enrollment in Arvada’s Weber Elementary’s half-day kindergarten program dropped to zero — with each of the six families who had enrolled their children in half-day kindergarten reenrolling their children in the full-day program.

The change resulted when Gov. Jared Polis signed legislation on May 21 that will utilize state finances to fund tuition for full-day kindergarten students.

“Everyone jumped at the opportunity, and that was really exciting,” said principal Lisa Malloy.

Schools across Jeffco are seeing similar reenrollments, such as Golden’s Mitchell Elementary, where principal Samantha Hollman said the legislative change has made a huge difference for families.

“We have a handful of families who were going to wait a year that can start now,’” she said. “And we’ve had about ten students switch over from half-day to full-day.”

Funds from the legislation will go to all district schools, including charter schools, covering the costs of kindergarten programs and eliminating enrollment fees for families. Previously, half-day kindergarten in Jefferson County was free for families while full-day kindergarten was associated with a monthly fee of $300.

“I think it’s great, because the families who can’t afford the fee don’t have to have that worry,” said Tina Steinbach, school secretary at Belmar School of Integrated Arts in Lakewood.

“They were very excited about that.”

All students are guaranteed a full-day kindergarten placement in their neighborhood school. Families who have already enrolled in a half-day program can reenroll in a full-day kindergarten program in their neighborhood school

She added that full-day kindergarten has many benefits, as well, providing students with opportunities they do not have in half-day programs.

“They can fully participate in all the goodies, like specials and the afternoon fieldtrips,” she said. “They get more of the school experience.”

“We get to know the students and learn about who they are earlier, because we have them for the whole day,” Hollman said. “Exciting times are coming for us next year.”

As an employee of the Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation, data manager Choni Cooper knew that the organization had help available for moms who had questions about nursing their children.

However, she didn’t look into it right away.

The mother of two had previously nursed her daughter for eight months, moving on when she felt she had no other choice.

“I didn’t have the support necessary to continue, or so I thought at the time,” she said. “But I wanted to be the mom who had an outstanding amount of milk to donate.”

After her second child was born in 2018, Cooper considered going to the Baby Café — a location for new moms created by the Mothers’ Milk Bank, a nonprofit program

“I was hesitant because at that time, my son was three months old,” Cooper said, adding that she expected other parents to have two- and threeweek old babies with them.

Eventually, she said, she decided to give it a try.

“And I am so grateful I went in,” she said. “It was the safe space I needed to be in. The other moms and I could relate on so many levels.”

The Mothers’ Milk Bank Baby Café, 5394 Marshall St.,

provides a weekly learning and social opportunity for moms who are currently breastfeeding their babies or would like to start doing so. Parents can attend the café for free to speak with certified consultants and meet other moms.

“We have lactation specialists, we have a scale that weighs how much milk the baby is getting,” said donor relations manager Abby Case. “We really help each family meet their own personal goals.”

The Baby Café was opened a year ago by the Mothers’ Milk Bank. Through that program,

mothers who meet health and safety guidelines donate their milk, which is distributed to infants in NICUs across the country. A hospital’s NICU treats newborns who need emergency medical attention.

“The moms of those babies will often go on to give back to the milk bank,” Case said.

“It comes full circle, which is really cool.”

In 2018, the Milk Bank received 1,200 donations and dispensed 750,000 ounces of milk — enough to feed more than 25,000 babies for a day, Case said.

“We have hospitals calling us every day to put orders in,” she said.

in exchange for a processing fee. In an effort to help those families further, Case said, the bank opened the Baby Café in May 2018. The café recently invited families in to celebrate its anniversary with snacks, cake and demonstrations by consultants on different baby carriers the moms could use.

“I feel very fortunate to have found the Baby Café,” said Broomfield mom Kajsa Rossetto, who has been bringing her daughter Nora to the café for the past year.

“You’re able to get out of the house and express yourself,” she said. “It’s a great way to get support.”

Families can drop in every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with anywhere from six to 13 families in the café at a given time, Case said.

“If you’re coming in for the first time, it’s a little easier to navigate because it’s a smaller group,” she said. “It just provides a space for moms to come meet other moms — and dads are welcome, too.”

Cooper encouraged families in the area to visit the café.

“The worst that can happen is that the information doesn’t apply to you,” she said. “So take that step and try it out.”

Treasure hunting for great reading Spring Whale of a Used Book Sale kicks off summer with thousands of bargain books

ll the smiles are wonderful.

Whether it be an adult who found a book that completes a his or her collection by a certain author, or a little kid who can’t wait to take home their bag full books and start reading.

“This is a great way to kick off summer,” said Kate Borgelt of Golden who was shopping for children’s books with Stone Gillaspie, 5, and Mica Gillaspie, 9.

The Spring Whale of a Used Book Sale took place May 31-June 2 with a Friends Only Preview Night on May 30. The sale is a biannual event put on by the Jefferson County Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides funding for the Jefferson County Public Library’s various programs, events and activities that are not covered by taxpayer dollars.

The whale sales are also a “wonderful way to repurpose good books back into the community,” said Jo Schantz, executive director of the Jefferson County Library Foundation.

Though it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact year the whale sales began, Schantz said, they’ve been going for at least 20 years. This year’s spring sale featured 80,000 books, comics, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records spanning 37

different categories to hunt through.

“It’s a treasure hunt here,” said Linda Larson, a member of the Jefferson County Library Foundation who has been volunteering at the whale book sales since 2003.

The entire Logue Family loves to read, said Christine Logue of Aurora, and between all of them, the family ended up purchasing 210 books from the sale on May 31.

Logue is a teacher and next year, she is moving from kindergarten to second grade.

“I’m filling my classroom library,” she said, adding she was also shopping for her twin daughters who will be entering the first grade next year.

Logue’s son Carter, 11, enjoys reading war books and novels about dogs, he said, and that’s what he was seeking out. He has dyslexia, but has been making a lot of progress with his reading, he said.

“Big chapter books are still a struggle,” Carter Logue said, “but I get through it (because) I like reading.”

Greg Morrison of Fort Collins is a math teacher in school in Loveland, but he was shopping for himself on May 31, primarily for science fiction books and movies.

“But there’s a lot of everything (and) great prices,” Morrison said. “This is a great place to find books in good

There are more books than ever this year, said Deborah Deal, a trustee for the Jeffco library’s board, and it’s exciting to be able to keep them out of the landfill and into the hands of readers.

“We’re enabling people to have great books on everything you can imagine,” Deal said. But not only that, she added, “this is an amazing example of Jeffco citizen volunteerism. The people that work this sale come back sale after sale. They’re the most dedicated individuals you can find.”

More than 200 volunteers contributed to the success of this year’s Spring Whale of Used Book Sale. One of them was Tyrenny Hidy, who is in her fourth year of volunteering at both the spring and fall whale book sales.

“I like the customers and I like the diversity of books, Hidy said.

Though she’s been volunteering for four years, Hidy has been a patron of the sales for many years prior — she shopped for books at the whale book sales while attending college at the Colorado School of Mines, and soon after she graduated, she started volunteering.

“I love all the rest of the volunteers,” Hidy said. “It’s like a little Whale Sale family.”

Middle school teacher lives ‘childhood dream’ as pro gamer

Three and a half years ago, Arvada resident Josh Shoeman entered and won his first gaming tournament, also winning his first prize: a sandwich from Cheba Hut. The tournament saw players go head-to-head in Super Smash Bros., a video game series in which opponents fight one another as characters from Nintendo games. Shoeman, who has played the games since the first title’s release in 1999, entered the Cheba Hut competition after a friend urged him to do so.

Years later, the 24-year-old math teacher from Rodger Quist Middle School in Thornton is known as the top Super Smash Bros. player in the state and has won thousands of dollars from tournaments.

“It’s like a childhood dream I’m going through,” he said.

In the past three months, Shoeman has placed third or higher in each of the dozens of competitions he’s entered.

Now, the gamer seeks first place in his latest endeavor, GameWorks Showdown — a national tournament put on

by GameWorks, a chain of entertainment centers. The chain recently incorporated

GameWorks Showdown represents the chain’s first national tournament and has already attracted hundreds of online viewers, who stream matches through livestreaming platform Twitch.

Sadowski said he expects to see even greater numbers tuning in for the regional and national rounds, with big names competing and the community larger than ever before.

According to Newzoo’s eSports Market Report, the

eSports market generated more than $900 million in revenue and reached 165 million regular viewers in 2018. In 2016, those numbers amounted to $350 million and 121 million viewers.

“Players want to test their skills,” Sadowski said, “and while you can do that virtually, there’s something really special about sitting right next to the person you’re competing against.”

The road to nationals GameWorks Showdown began May 12 with local competitions at venues across the country. Competitors have

played the latest title in the series, Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate, and earned points to secure a spot in one of seven regional competitions.

Shoeman will compete in regionals on June 9 at the Denver GameWorks, 7950 Northfield Blvd. The winners of each regional competition, as well as the winner of a last chance qualifying round, will compete in Las Vegas on June 28 for a share of the final cash pool, which amounts to approximately $10,000.

For Shoeman, who often plays as the character Zero Suit Samus, the trick to winning is figuring out what his opponents will do before they do it.

“While most people are focused on what they’re doing, I can read people’s habits,” he said.

He added that he often talks with competitors after each match and gives them advice.

In the meantime, he also finds himself giving advice to the students in his math classes, who typically find out about his professional gaming status without him having to tell them.

“Kids always seem to want to search their teachers’ names online,” he said. “They’ll bring it up, and we’ll talk about what they’re doing and what characters they’ve been using.”

Occasionally, Shoeman will spend lunch hours playing matches against his students.

“Mostly, I try to make things look cool,” he said. “Anything that creates flashiness.”

What’s next After the June competition, Shoeman hopes to travel abroad for tournaments in countries around the world, including in Canada and England. He plans to continue competing for at least four years, after which he may retire as a competitor and host tournaments instead.

Sadowski encourages new gamers to get involved.

“We want casual gamers who are trying to learn to come in and see things for themselves,” Sadowski said.

ome jokes about oil are too crude for my taste.

But seriously. While I was waiting for my prescription to be filled by the pharmacist, I waited in a small area that was shelf after shelf of remedies, ointments, potions, lotions, candles, salts and emollients.

One display had a palette of what are called “essential oils.”

The word “essential” intrigued me, because it means “absolutely necessary,” and I realized at that moment I might have been neglecting my essentials.

Harry and Jennifer are my primary essentials. After that come music, painting and black-and-white films, like “The 39 Steps.”

My car considers oil an essential.

When I got home, I looked up “essential oils” and saw the word “aromatherapy,” and held on to the armrests of my chair.

Others have books everywhere, stacks of vinyl records, or figurines.

When I read about a town that was wiped out by a tornado, and see a couple crying next to their chimney and nothing else, I wonder how they’re going to make it without their “essentials.” It must be a test to find out what you really, truly need.

the unofficial start of summer, in October and November, depending on snowfall, we get excited over the unofficial start to winter as the first lifts open and we get back on the hill.

It’s fun, its energizing, the “starts” in life motivate us and inspire us as we look forward with great anticipation to what is coming next.

What about the unofficial stops in life? The soft stops? Those pauses where we say or believe that we just need to take a short break from our goals or projects?

In most cases we know what happens don’t we? Those unofficial stops and soft stops turn in to official stops and hard stops.

We never intend for this to happen, we just seem to run out of gas, or our interest fades, or we move on to the next new thing in our path or life.

In the last six months, my mother has moved out of the house that she and my Dad shared for a couple decades. I never think of that particular house as “home,” because that’s not the house that I grew up in, but they were actually in that house longer than they lived at “home.” But, that’s one of those other cycles that life brings in your direction, eventually, when the space you need for your life isn’t what it once was. Thankfully, at 83 years old, she is still perfectly happy and capable living on her own.

Who am I kidding? She’s going to outlive me, I’m certain.

Which is still different than the life I was talking about with a good friend of mine today. She has been taking care of her elderly mother, while her father slips through the “long goodbye” of Alzheimer’s. I’m sure nobody who is any part of that situation imagined that this would be the way the seasons would come back

I am in between, and I am grateful to be there.

If I were to cook an oil for the purpose of balancing my life, I think I would come to the conclusion that I had finally tipped over the edge.

We know that we want to write a book, create music, or start a busi-

ness. We have an unofficial start as we brainstorm ideas, get energized, and just become completely consumed with our passion and our ideas.

It’s awesome because we started, we took the first steps, our adrenaline is pumping and we can’t wait to keep going.

And this is when we really have to keep our guard up, because here is where negative thinking or negative people will talk us out of fulfilling our dream.

And if we allow this to happen, our energy and passion train gets Zig Ziglar slows down, and our soft stop eventually becomes a hard stop leaving our dreams unfulfilled.

I think God brings us the smaller cycles of life to help prepare us for the bigger ones. And, also, so that we can start to recognize and appreciate each season for its unique opportunities and beauty, no matter how challenging. What were the words of The Bard? “There is a tide in the affairs of man…” All that’s left to us, ultimately, is to decide whether to shout at the waves from the shore…

or adventurers, Colorado offers fourteeners, national forests and famous sand dunes, but if you live in the Denver metro area and aren’t fond of hours-long drives, the state is still home to many places where you can escape city life.

“It depends on what you’re looking for,” said Lauren Truitt, Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman, about state parks. “With Cherry Creek, you forget there’s city all around you. Roxborough has that stunning, vista-style view that looks over Denver and south to Castle Rock.”

And Barr Lake, up north near Brighton, is still less than an hour away from much of the rest of the metro area — out on the eastern plains but still boasting a “phenomenal view of the whole northern mountain range,” Truitt said.

More getaways sit in your backyard. Here’s a look at nearby state, federal and local stops and the kinds of eclectic activities they offer.

Cherry Creek State Park The massive park located between Aurora, Denver and the Centennial area isn’t just about its reservoir.

The park also allows camping, a shooting range and even rides on horses that parkgoers can rent, Truitt said. Enthusiasts can also fly model airplanes there, and, of course, the reservoir is open for fishing, she added.

Cherry Creek State Park is located along Interstate 225 and along South Parker Road.

Chatfield State Park South of Littleton along C-470 and South Santa Fe Drive, Chatfield also offers fishing, model-airplane flying and camping.

Horses are available for rent, and riding lessons and hayrides are also part of the fun, Truitt said.

Barr Lake State Park Northeast near Interstate 76 and E-470 sits Barr Lake State Park, where you can try your hand at archery.

“Barr Lake is fantastic for bird watching,” Truitt said. “They have a concessionaire that can rent canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

TIPS FOR PARENTS AND KIDS The basics of enjoying Colorado’s parks include bringing sunscreen, layers, water, snacks and good closed-toe shoes.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen kiddos wearing flip-flips on hikes,” said Lauren Truitt, Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman.

But make sure they’re still comfortable, Truitt said, especially for small kids.

“As long as they’re comfy, they’re usually happy to keep going.”

It’s important not to take young kids on outings that are too grueling, Truitt said.

“Take your time, have fun and enjoy the time,” Truitt said.

Many items from Generation Wild’s List of 100 Things to Do outside could be knocked out at parks in the metro area, according to Great Outdoors Colorado, a state organization that created the program.

he dining scene in Denver is in a constant state of exciting evolution, as new chefs and restaurants find unique ways to cater to the city’s burgeoning population. And while that statement is especially true now, it could easily apply at any time during the Mile High City’s history.

Denver-based commercial photographer and travel writer Chad Chisholm wanted to explore the city’s culinary history as part of the Reedy Press series on dining in cities around the country. “Unique Eats and Eateries of Denver” is the result COMING of that work.

ATTRACTIONS “I feel like Denver has a unique atmosphere in that teamwork and ‘playing well in the sandbox’ together is an important aspect of success here,” Chisholm explained.

“I also believe that’s an important Clarke Reader aspect of translating restaurants or celebrity chefs from other markets to find success in Denver, adopting the Denver friendly approach and sense of community.”

We asked Chisholm some questions about the process, dining in Denver and more: What kind of research went into writing the book?

Growing up in Colorado gave me unique insight to the local scene; I try to go to as many restaurants as possible when they open and had my upbringing in Colorado to draw upon for local knowledge. I curated a list of Denver restaurants I knew to have a unique story or background as well as unique spaces they inhabit.

What do you think would surprise people most about Denver’s culinary scene?

It’s not surprising for Denverites, but the friendly demeanor found here is impressive. The dedication to community and giving back is noteworthy and chefs often are found front of house as much as back of house.

What do you hope people who read your book come away with?

Some of the stories and saga of the Denver dining scene; whether a tidbit of history or heartwarming story that they hadn’t heard before. I hope readers have a deeper love of everything Denver has to offer and continues to nurture unique eats and eateries.

“I just discovered Cherry Knolls park,” said Dempsey, whose organization oversees a state trust fund to protect Colorado’s natural areas. “It’s got a trail going through it, but the most awesome thing is the creek with plenty of sandbars for the kids to splash around in.”

Cherry Knolls is located in west Centennial near South University Boulevard. And in the middle of Denver proper, City Park — not far outside downtown — offers views of the mountains and city buildings, Dempsey said.

The park includes trails for horses, but visitors must bring their own, Truitt said.

Fishing is also allowed.

Roxborough State Park Located a few minutes south of Chatfield, Roxborough offers trails for every level of hiker, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s website.

“It’s got that beautiful red-rock formation that goes straight through the park,” Truitt said. Distinct plant life, as well as wildlife ranging from black bears to mule deer, add to the atmosphere.

And while the park is “extremely well-visited,” it’s one of the few state parks in the nation that has a gold standard recognition by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, Truitt said.

That organization encourages visitors to leave natural areas “as good or better” than they found them, according to its website.

“The park feels remote,” Truitt said.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Sporting a strange name for a wildlife region, Rocky Mountain Arsenal is larger than many cities in the metro area.

Following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army converted the land into a chemical weapons manufacturing facility to support World War II, according to the refuge’s website. Congress designated the site as a national wildlife refuge in the early 1990s.

he name might have changed this year, but Denver Pop Culture Con was as brash and big as ever. Taking place at the Convention Center from May 31 through June 2, thousands of geeks, nerds, collectors and fans turned out to honor the writers, artists, actors and creators who have brought geek culture into the mainstream.

Famous onscreen performers from Doctor Who, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Magicians” and “Back to the Future” were on hand to take photos and sign autographs, and hundreds of booths allowed for shopping, collecting and connection

with fellow fans.

As is always the case, one of the main draws was cosplayers, who impressed with tributes to expected characters and series - plenty of Doctor Who, Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Marvel - as well as some delightful surprises like some choice “Big Lebowski” characters, several different species of dinosaurs and Barf from “Spaceballs.”

Dusty and Shaun Pack and Katrina Kendall came all the way from Wyoming to enjoy the con and showed off some seriously impressive Dragonball Super cosplay.

“Last year was around Father’s Day and this year’s con is right at the end of the school year,” Dusty said. “It’s a great way to celebrate.”

Three-yearold Greyson Cabrera from Aurora had his first cosplayer experience at Denver Pop Culture Con on June 1. He also had the chance to meet some of his favorite heroes, like Spider-Man. Entire groups of family and friends get in on the cosplay act at Denver Pop Culture Con on June 1.

Escapes, violence among incidents occurring over the past few months at youth detention center in Golden

The latest in a series of incidents at the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center ended in three guards being transported to the hospital on May 28.

One of the guards suffered a concussion and the other two were treated for minor injuries.

Medical personnel and the Golden Police Department were dispatched to the youth facility in Golden at about 6 p.m. According to police, guards were attempting to break up a fight that happened between several youths belonging to different gang affiliations.

“It does not appear that the staff members were the intended target,” said Golden Police Deputy Chief Joe Harvey, adding, “it’s not uncommon for them to need to break up fights.”

Early investigation into the incident indicates that the fight was likely instigated by some sort of signal between some of the youths involved to go into the hallway from facility’s dining area, Harvey said. It then quickly turned into an assault, Harvey said.

The investigation is ongoing, and appropriate charges, if any, Harvey said, will be determined as police learn more about the incident.

The Lookout Mountain facility “is an intensive secure treatment program for 140 male juvenile offenders,” states its website, and serves high risk youth who were committed to the facility through the district court sys-

tem. The facility is operated by Colorado Department of Human Services’ (CDHS) Division of Youth Services and accepts youth from anywhere in the state.

The May 28 fight is the second violent incident to occur at the facility in May. On May 1, Golden Police were dispatched to the Lookout Mountain facility on reports of a riot in a housing unit called Cedar Lodge. Eight juveniles — all 17 years old — and 19 staff members were involved in the riot. Four juveniles and 10 staff members were injured. Of the staffers, none of the injuries were serious, but four people were transported to a nearby hospital.

Initial reports indicate that the riot started after one of the juveniles “chest-bumped” a guard, Harvey said during a previous interview for the incident. The guard attempted to control the juvenile, Harvey said, “and it quickly grew” from that.

The riot itself probably lasted only a few minutes, Harvey said at the time, and it took an additional few minutes for the facility to go on lockdown.

In addition to the May 1 riot and May 28 fight disturbances, inmates have escaped from the Lookout Mountain facility on two separate occasions within the past two months.

The Golden Police Department says Devon Brock, 15, escaped from custody at about 10:15 a.m., April 11, as staff was escorting him to the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles, 16950 W. Colfax Ave., in Golden. Brock was obtaining necessary documents in preparation for a transition to a stepdown facility this July, according to the press release.

Littleton Police Department located Brock in Littleton the next day and he was back in police custody by about 11 a.m.

Elephant Rock: ‘It’s all about community’

One by one or in groups, cyclists coasted down a hill on Highway 83 and descended into Castle Rock and the finish line June 2 during the annual Elephant Rock Ride. The easy ride into Franktown was a chance for the cyclists to catch their breath and enjoy the view of Pike’s Peak on a cloudless morning. About eight more miles along 86 and they would finish before some rolled out of bed on the Sunday morning.

“The best part of this are the views you get,” said Jack Cyrus, a 63-yearold from Castle Rock.

From Elephant Rock in Monument to the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock, cyclists took over the roads throughout El Paso, Douglas and Elbert counties.

The 30-year-old event drew more than 5,000 riders for one of the biggest cycling events of the year in Colorado.

Participants could choose to ride from three road courses of 40, 58 and 100 miles, two gravel routes of 27 and 60 miles and an 8-mile family ride.

As riders finished at the fairgrounds, they enjoyed beer, food and music at the riders-dream expo.

“It’s all about community,” said Rodger Hauch, 27, of Centennial. “It’s a chance for riders to celebrate the season with each other.”

It’s Criterium time again in Wheat Ridge High-speed cycling event offers family fun and beer

Cyclists from across the state will compete on June 9 at the Criterium and Brewfest in downtown Wheat Ridge.

During each of the day’s races, participants ride as many laps of the 1-mile circuit as possible within the time limit. This ensures a lot of action and excitement for spectators and athletes. This year, Wheat Ridge’s Criterium will once again act as the Colorado Criterium State Championships.

The course begins and ends on 38th Avenue in front of Wheat Ridge Cyclery, the event’s Presenting Race Sponsor. Riders, both elite and amateur, will race with staggered start times beginning at 9 a.m., continuing till 5 p.m.

Each race takes about 40 to 60 minutes. Prizes range from gift cards and merchandise to cash. This year’s updated race course will end in a sprint to the finish along 38th Avenue.

Back this year is the accompanying brewfest. Eleven Colorado microbreweries will offer 8-ounce tasters

Brock’s original offense was not known at press time, but he “is considered a violent offender” by law enforcement and his escape caused local schools to go on lock-out for about two hours during search efforts.

Brock lived in El Paso County prior to his detention and was committed to the Division of Youth Corrections in June 2018 according to Golden Police.

Brock was transferred to the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center in October 2018 and had a mandatory release date scheduled for June 2020.

Two sex offenders with gang affiliations — roommates at the Lookout Mountain facility — escaped from the facility on May 6.

During a routine perimeter check at 5:20 a.m., a Golden police officer noticed a broken window with sheets hanging from the second floor and a dumpster turned on its side on the northwest side of the building, triggering a search for Javier Madera, 19, and Emilio Dominguez, 17, began.

At about 3:30 p.m. May 7, members of a fugitive unit from Denver Police and Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force spotted the suspects in a vehicle near Sixth Avenue and Simms Street in Lakewood. They eventually made their way up Lookout Mountain Road, but turned around and were intercepted by Golden Police. A short vehicle pursuit ended when the suspects’ vehicle crashed near I-70 and US 40.

Both of the youths tried to flee on foot but were captured by officers.

For the attempted escape from the Lookout Mountain facility, Madera faces criminal mischief and escape charges. He is being charged as an adult offender and is being held in the Jefferson County jail in Golden.

Dominguez was booked into Mount View Youth Services Center, 7862 W. Mansfield Parkway in Denver, which, like the Lookout Mountain facility, is operated by the CDHS Division of Youth Services. Mount View, however, is “a secure, co-ed multi-purpose facility” that serves “youth who have returned to secure committed care due to unsafe behaviors and increased risk while in the community either in a non-secure placement or on juvenile parole.”

Dominguez faces new charges of reckless driving, felony eluding, criminal mischief and escape.

Following the May 6 escape, Mark Techmeyer, communications director for the CDHS, issued a press release that outlined some of the protocols at the Lookout Mountain facility.

“Staffing levels are challenging and constantly being monitored,” a statement in the press release said. “However, staffing was at required levels during the escape.”

The press release stated that the director of the Division of Youth Services had been assigned to direct oversight of the Lookout Mountain facility.

Internal reviews and security protocols will continue to be examined, and changes will be implemented where necessary.

“Through the process of the internal reviews,” the press release states, “CDHS is looking at both this incident and also examining opportunities for larger systemic improvements.”

A resource for Spanish speakers in Jefferson County

Paulina Erices started working for Jefferson County Public Health a few years ago as a maternal child health specialist. Erices began to hear a common pattern with some of the Spanish speaking families she worked with — they had difficulties finding services in their language. Some families have to drive far outside of Jefferson County to receive certain services, and many families take the bus, making their commute a day long trip.

“Who are we kidding that we are a white county? Communities are disconnected, and the isolation their families are experiencing is huge,” said Erices.

According to the United States Census Bureau, 15.4 percent of Jefferson County residents are Hispanic, or Latino.

Erices works with Adelante Jeffco, a network of community members and organizations like Jeffco Public Schools, Jeffco Public Health, Jeffco Public Libraries and the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition. The network aims to identify opportunities and

strategies to offer services to Latino families.

Adelante Jeffco envisions amplifying the capacity of Jeffco Latinos to build and lead solutions and promoting strategies to add cultural relevant services in organizations to provide better services to the community.

Before Lakewood’s Earth Day celebration in April, Adelante Jeffco gathered Spanish speakers to attend a nature

walk before going to the event together.

“Adelante Jeffco gives me the opportunity to grow internally, and the opportunity to grow as a person. To be part of Adelante Jeffco provides me with the tools to have confidence in myself and impact my community,” said Cynthia Zapata, the coordinator for Adelante Jeffco.

The network was named a public health champion by Jeffco Public Health in April for working to improve the health of Jefferson County residents.

“I feel very proud to be part of (Adelante Jeffco). I feel it is necessary for our community, and it is accessible to all,” said Esther Caldera, an Adelante Jeffco member.

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has named West Metro Fire Rescue as a 2019 winner of the association’s most prestigious award. West Metro is a recipient of the Excellence in Government Finance- Exceptionally Well Implemented Best Practices Award, one of just eight government agencies to be recognized, and the only fire district.“Part of our commitment to our community is sound financial

management that guarantees we will have the resources we need to keep our firefighters well trained and well equipped,” said West Metro Fire Chief Don Lombardi. “We’re honored to be recognized by the GFOA for our dedication to the people we serve.”

The GFOA Awards for Excellence in Government Finance recognize innovative programs that contribute to the practice of government finance that exemplify outstanding financial management. The awards stress practical,

documented work that offers leadership to the profession and promotes improved public finance.

West Metro’s Finance Division researched, developed and implemented an innovative plan to ensure the district’s financial sustainability, by revising the comprehensive fund balance policy and the approach to analyzing reserves, based on risk factors that are specific to the district’s economic and financial situation.

Through the process, the district gained a new knowledge base and

established a strong foundation for future obligations.

West Metro’s Finance Division has also been honored by the GFOA the past three years with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, and West Metro has earned 18 Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Awards.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 20,000 government financial professionals in the United States and Canada.
