Ordinances to annex land, pave way for affordable clinic Annex public hearing set for June 3

At its meeting on May 20, the Arvada council discussed annexing a 56th Avenue property into the city, and the approval of a lease change that would usher in an affordable medical clinic.

The property up for annexation, 6350 and 6360 W. 56th Ave., is part of an Arvada area “that’s kind of a hodgepodge of properties that are and aren’t the city,” said planner Jeremiah Bebo.

Bebo said the owner of the property, turbomachinery company Barber-Nichols, presented to the planning department on May 7. The company hopes to annex the property into the city and build on the property. If within city limits, the building could be powered by city utilities.

request like this,” Bebo said. “There are properties that are in the city but just haven’t been annexed yet.”

Bebo added that the owners plan to re-landscape the property during the construction project.

“The site now has debris on it,” he said. “This development is going to make the property more visually appealing through architecture and landscaping.”

Council has scheduled a public hearing for the annexation at its meeting on June 3, which will start at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 8101 Ralston Road.

Toward the end of the meeting, council also held a public hearing for an ordinance that would amend the leasing agreement between the city and Community Table, formerly the Arvada Community Food Bank.

The ordinance will allow Community Table to open an “affordable healthcare clinic” in partnership with Red Rocks Community College.

At the clinic, doctors will supervise as Red Rocks students provide uninsured patients with low-cost healthcare services. Services may include taking throat cultures or

supplying cold and flu medication, said Sandy Martin, Community Table CEO. The clinic will serve patients 18 years and older, Martin said.

Meanwhile, parents can find similar affordable healthcare services for their children in Arvada at the Carin’ Clinic, 5150 Allison St., she said.

“They’re an excellent program for the kids, and they’ve got that one taken care of,” she said. “We’re filling in the gap that they don’t serve.”

Council unanimously approved the ordinance, as well as a related one allowing for change to the leasing agreement between the city and Red Rocks Community College.

“I think that the partnership between the Community Table and Red Rocks is perfect,” said councilmember David Jones, one of several councilmembers to commend the two organizations.

“What an opportunity for those students to practice their craft of helping people feel better,” he said, “in a place where people really need to feel better, in more than just one way.”

Man sentenced to 10 years probation for soliciting prositution from teen John Yenter will serve one year in jail, avoid prison

An Arvada man was sentenced to 10 years of sex offender intensive supervision May 23, with one year in jail as a condition of probation.

John Yenter, 33, received his sentence after pleading guilty in March to two class 3 felonies, the solicitation of child prostitution and the sexual exploitation of a child.

According to his arrest affidavit , Yenter solicited Yenter a 15-year-old Arvada resident for sex on several occasions. The document stated that the girl had run away from home repeatedly and was involved with “various Arvada-based runaways.”

When interviewed by police, she said that Yenter found her in a home she was staying at after she’d stolen methamphetamines from one of Yenter’s friends. She had passed out from “heavy drug use,” according to the affidavit. When the victim woke up, Yenter had locked himself in the room with her and threatened her, saying he would not harm her if she had sex with him.

“I did it, and he let me go, and we

haven’t talked since then,” she told police.

According to the affidavit, Yenter later asked her for sex on multiple occasions, offering her hundreds of dollars to perform sexual acts or send nude photographs of herself. Yenter was arrested by the Arvada Police Department in September of 2018.

Under Colorado’s Sex Offender Intensive Supervision Program (SOISP), courts can choose to sentence sex offenders to probation rather than prison. For an individual to be eligible for the program, he or she cannot be a habitual sex offender and the crime must be non-violent, in addition to several other requirements.

Sex offenders may receive a minimum sentence of 10 years up to a sentencing for life.

Requirements of those on probation include registering as a sex offender, participating in a sex offender treatment program and ending contact with anyone under 18 years old.

Yenter will serve one year in jail and has been authorized for work release.

Under the Computer Use Agreement for Sex Offenders, he will have limited access to technology, including no access to social media or pornography.

At the end of the sentencing, Judge Randall Arp addressed the victim’s family, stating that he hoped for their success on what he described as a challenging road ahead.

“This will impact your daughter for the rest of her life,” he said.

Finding the Right Senior Living Community Can Be Confusing!

Buying and selling a single family home can be confusing enough, but it pales in comparison to shopping for the best senior living community.

According to Jenn Gomer of CarePartrol (more about her later in this article), there are no fewer than 400 senior communities in the Denver metro area, and the variety of living options and business models can be overwhelming.

There are pure rental facilities and rentals with buy-ins.

The size and terms of those buy-ins can vary greatly, too.

I have a pet peeve that I need to get off my chest. Former Girl Scout seeks successor to plan run New organizer would plan local 5K, which provides kids with birthday cake

irthdays are a big deal at Wheat Ridge’s Kullerstrand Elementary School, where every morning, students are invited over the intercom system to the front office for their birthdays.

The students celebrate by visiting the principal, taking a photo and receiving a gift bag of birthday cake ingredients, including cake mix, frosting and candles.

Those gift bags come courtesy of the Run for Cake, an annual fun run launched five years ago by then eighth-grader Maria Curtis.

Curtis, 18, organized the Run for Cake to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award, a community service award.

The Girl Scout with her troop and the Arvada Community Food Bank — now Community Table — to get the project off the ground.

Leaders at the food bank suggested the project fund birthday cake gift bags for Kullerstrand students, Curtis said.

The elementary school receives Title I funding, which the government allocates for low-income students, and those working on the project hoped to make a positive impact on the school.

Curtis brainstormed ways in which to raise the funds. A runner herself — she participated on Faith Christian Academy’s track and cross-country teams — Curtis decided on a fun run.

“It’s really a huge blessing,” said Tim Weaver, Kullerstrand’s family engagement liaison. “It’s just a nice way for the kids to be recognized that we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.”

Having graduated from high school this May, Curtis is seeking a successor to take over the fun run.

“Whether it’s this summer or next summer, we just want it to continue,” said Judy Curtis, Maria’s mother, who was one of two leaders of Maria’s Girl Scout troop.

Ideally, another Girl Scout will take over the operation, the Curtises said.

They added that an entire troop or service unit, which is a local group of Girl Scout troops, could also take over the project and divide responsibilities between group members.

Maria encouraged middle-schoolaged Girl Scouts to consider taking over the project.

“I know it sounds young, but that’s the best age to start something like this,” she said.

The Run for Cake typically occurs in July, bringing in up to 100 runners in a given year, she said.

To participate, runners pay a registration fee of $5, a box of cake mix, a pack of candles and a container of frosting.

“We try to do marketing in person,” Maria said. “I reached out to high

“In the future, we know she’ll be a success because of her generous heart,” Weaver said.

Curtis hopes to find a successor during June so she can meet with the new organizer over the summer.

“You don’t have to be super organized, and you don’t even have to like running,” Maria said.

“You just have to want to help people,” Judy said.

When local employers came to the Chamber of Commerce, president Kami Welch noticed that, for years, many of them were saying the same thing.

“They were concerned about the quantity of prospective employees,” Welch said, “and that employees didn’t have the skills to be successful when they arrived.”

Sally Morris, who owns commercial roofing company Turner Morris with her husband, Tim, agreed with the assessment. She said her company has been understaffed for some time.

“Roofing is hard physical labor, and it’s hard to get workers who want to work that hard,” she said. “We really need more employees. Everyone does.”

Determined to promote a flourishing workforce in Arvada, the chamber launched the Arvada Works Talent Pipeline Program, which got off the ground last summer, Welch said.

“This is not a chamber initiative; it’s a community initiative,” Welch said.

“We’ve seen everything from bakeries to engineering companies participate.”

Arvada Works can help anybody in the community who is looking for employment, she said, whether that person is a high school student, a college graduate or a worker interested in finding a new career path.

Throughout the past year, the program has engaged 80 local businesses and organized more than 200 meetings. Welch said it has also put a special emphasis on reaching students, including through job fairs and events in which a panel of students can speak to business-owners.

Arvada Works also partners with specific school programs, such as the Career Explore Program at Arvada

High School. In that yearlong program, students spend a portion of the school day learning career-readiness skills and completing training at job sites, many of which connected with the high school through Arvada Works.

“Arvada Works has helped us with a lot of our trips and tours,” said Tamra Lowe, Career Explore director. “We can’t do it without them.”

Lowe said students selected to enroll in the Career Explore Program qualify as at-risk students, meaning they meet at least one at-risk criterion, such as having a health or family concern.

“Almost every student said, `I don’t want to go to college,’” she said, referring to those who enrolled in the program during the 2018-2019 school year.

“Yet by the end of the year, we had students with scholarships and most students looking at post-secondary edu-

“We want the employers sharing information in schools,” Welch said.

“It’s really creating that connection between industry and suppliers of the workforce.”

Morris said word of Turner Morris has reached a broader audience as the company has engaged in Arvada Works’s student-focused events.

“It’s really not possible to get in schools ourselves as an employer,” she said, “so I really appreciate Arvada Works for providing that pathway. This gets the word out.”

Lowe said she looks forward to working closely with the Arvada Works program during the years to come.

“I anticipate that we’re on a pretty steep trajectory of growth with them,” she said. “At this point, the sky’s the limit.”

Despite struggling to keep up with an ever-increasing demand for services because of population growth, Jefferson County has been able to avoid budget cuts for the past few years, said Libby Szabo, chair of the Board of County Commissioners.

“But that is no longer an option,” Szabo said. “The bottom line is that we have to trim our budgets for 2020.”

The county recently proposed a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund. The General Fund is the county’s principle operating fund that is financed primarily by property taxes.

However, Jefferson County Commissioner Casey Tighe points out that the Colorado Tax Payer Bill of Rights (TABOR) puts an additional strain on the county’s financial struggles.

“Even though property values may increase, the amount of property tax revenue the county is allowed to

collect is limited by the state constitution,” Tighe said. “This limit on the growth of revenue has resulted in the county spending into reserves, which is no longer sustainable.”

The county’s 2019 budget documents state that two principles are to be used to develop the budget for the general fund — one is to have “two months of operating expenses be maintained as a reserve in the general fund” and the second “requires that all ongoing operating expenses be covered by revenue and not fund balance.”

At the same time, the county is working on developing its strategic plan, called Jeffco 2050 Strategy. This will put focus on three main efforts — safety, health and well-being, and stewardship.

This strategic plan, once its closer to finalization, will help the county’s various departments with prioritizing their services as they make cuts, said Ashley Sever, the public affairs manager for Jefferson County Public Health.

“Jefferson County is one of the healthiest counties in Colorado, and that’s partly due to our commitment to strong public health services,” said Dr. Mark B. Johnson, executive director of Jefferson County Public Health. “While budget cuts are always challenging, we will work with Jefferson County and the local public health system to minimize the impact and identify ways to continue to keep

Per a press release sent out on April 23, the sheriff ’s office notes that in order to achieve a seven percent reduction, it would have to cut its budget by $6.7 million.

This would best be achieved by eliminating employees, but Sheriff Jeff Shrader is “very against making employee cuts,” said the sheriff ’s office’s public information officer Mike Taplin. Therefore, hiring for a position that opens — such as after a person retires — would not happen and that position would remain vacant.

Currently, the Jeffco jail can house 1,400 inmates. But should jail positions become vacant, in order to keep the current guard-to-inmate ratio balanced for safety reasons, the jail capacity may have to be cut by 400-600 beds.

a contract with the U.S. Marshal to house some of its prisoners, and this provides an additional $1.8 million of revenue to the sheriff ’s office, according to the April 23 press release. If the jail’s capacity has to be cut back, the sheriff would rather end the contract with the U.S. Marshal, resulting in a revenue loss, than not have the beds available when needed by the county’s local, municipal police agencies, Taplin said.

The county will continue to look for greater efficiencies on how business is done, said Jeffco Commissioner Lesley Dahlkemper.

Some of these efforts have already proven to be successful, Dahlkemper added. For example, she said, the county’s Road & Bridge Division — which takes care of road, sidewalk and signage maintenance, replacement and repair; street sweeping; snow plowing; and other services vital to transportation — saves the county about $350,000 each year by recycling 100 percent of its used asphalt.

Likewise, the “facilities team has increased energy efficiency, resulting in a savings of nearly $480,000 annually,” she added.

“We take our job as stewards of taxpayer dollars very seriously,” Dahlkemper said of the county commissioners. And even when faced with a need to make budget cuts, “we’re always searching for innovative ways to save taxpayer dollars.”

Vegans “party” at new Arvada restaurant School House owner opens So Radish in Olde Town

As he prepared to open a fifth business in Arvada, Scott Spears set his sights on trying something new.

Having been an on-and-off vegan for years, Spears decided to create a restaurant that primarily served vegan meals — but he was determined to make it completely different than similar restaurants.

“A lot of vegan places, they have flowers on the table and they feel very natural,” he said. “This is a place where vegans can be normal and party.”

Spears, who owns School House Kitchen and the Scrumptious ice cream shop, opened his newest restaurant, So Radish, on April 25. Located at 5711 Olde Wadsworth Blvd., the restaurant is a family operation, he said.

“My wife and I own it, my mom owns the building, my dad helps out,” he said. “It’s all taken a couple years.”

Spears said his employees spent around nine months developing items for the menu, comprised entirely of vegan meals. The selection includes black bean burgers, mushroom cheese steaks and cauliflower tacos, as well as a number of vegan beverages.

In addition to the detailed vegan menu, customers said they appreciated the `80s-inspired atmosphere of the restaurant.

“It’s very colorful,” Montgomery said. “It’s different and unique.”

Spears designed the interior of the restaurant with a “rad-ish” vibe in mind, he said. Hoping to make the restaurant stand out from others in Olde Town, he installed neon lights, hired artists to cover the walls in street art and created a “hole in the wall” through which customers order their food, he said.

The staff also encourages customers to access a digital menu on their cell phones to save paper.

“We maybe did too many weird things here,” Spears joked.

With the restaurant up and running, he invited anyone in the community to drop by.

“You can bring your family who isn’t vegan and have them enjoy everything, too,” Spears said. “This is 100 percent the place for you to go to.”

“Having that background, I knew the tricks for how to accomplish things without using dairy,” she said.

“A lot of it was a matter of what I would want to eat at home and what I would put on it.”

“I’m really excited to have a healthconscious restaurant that caters to people with food sensitivities,” said Golden resident Sare Merrigan, who visited the restaurant for the first time with her friend, Tiffany Montgomery.

“I’ve been wanting to come here for like a month,” Merrigan said.

Spears said he wanted to open So Radish because he felt there were few other options where vegans could eat a meal out in Arvada.

Dinosaur fossils found in Highlands Ranch Bones beneath construction site appear to be triceratops, researchers say

A dinosaur that once roamed what is now Highlands Ranch met the open air for the first time in more than 66 million years, after a construction crew discovered its bones at a construction site in mid-May. A crew from Brinkmann Constructors building an expansion onto the Wind Crest retirement community near C-470 and Santa Fe Drive happened upon the fossilized bones, said Salvador Bastien, a fossil preparator with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

“We’re really excited they realized they were hitting bones,” Bastien said. “Lots of times, people don’t notice, or if they do, they just keep going.”

Though it’s a little early to say for sure, Bastien said the fossils appear to be from a triceratops, a three-horned herbivore that often grew to be 30 feet long and 10 feet tall. The fossils are from the late Cretaceous era, and are likely 66 million to 68 million years old. Dinosaurs

went extinct about 65 million years ago.

Triceratops are among the more common dinosaurs found in what’s called the Denver Formation, Bastien said. The formation was once a broad, forested river system, and triceratops appear to have been plentiful.

“Think of them like bison roaming the landscape,” Bastien said.

How the find will contribute to the scientific record depends on what researchers uncover, Bastien said.

“We don’t have X-ray vision, so we don’t know what else is lying in that hillside,” he said. So far, crews have found arm bones, ribs, and what may be skull bones.

Colorado’s Front Range is rich with fossils, Bastien said, because the geologic uplift that pushed the Rocky Mountains above ground cracked open layers of sedimentary rock that once sat over them, providing remarkable cross-sections of geologic history.

“It’s a really exciting place to be if you’re a paleontologist,” Bastien said.

The find is exciting for Wind Crest as well.

“On behalf of the residents

and employees of Wind Crest, we are thrilled to be part of such an incredible scientific discovery,” Craig Erickson, Wind Crest’s executive director, said in a news release. “We appreciate the invaluable expertise of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and our partners at Erickson Living and Brinkmann Constructors as we work together on this exciting opportunity for all of us to learn more about our earth’s rich history.”

Brinkmann Construction also thanked Wind Crest and the museum in the news release.

“This is a remarkable discovery that our team takes great pride in unearthing,” said David Rahm, a Brinkmann project director.

Bastien said he’s excited to get the fossils back to the museum’s lab, where volunteers will slowly clean them for addition to the museum’s collection.

In the meantime, Bastien encouraged locals to take a close look at their surroundings.

“This is such a wonderful area to find fossils,” Bastien said, “so keep your eyes peeled.”

will say it from the start: I know how unfair this is to you. I know it’s unfair to you because you’re different.

You’re not like everyone else, and neither is your dog “Rex.” Your dog is better than my dog, that’s all there is to it. Rules shouldn’t apply to you, but I am going to have to tell you, well, they do.

Those signs about every 100 yards that say, “Dogs must be on a leash,” they apply to your dog too. I know, I know. You’re special, and something like this cramps

We have something else in this neighborhood. It’s near a high school. That means we experience a lot of drivers who have had their licenses for about two weeks, and the speed limit? Well, it’s just a suggestion.

The residents (all senior citizens) were not just mad, but extremely upset about this behavior and want others to know about it. Not only is it unfortunate that there are people who steal, it is even worse that they are teaching their children this behavior.

Not Jeffco’s money Please tell the Jefferson County Commissioners they can’t lose something they never had! Your May 23 article quotes the commissioners news release saying “the loss of this surplus funding has a direct impact on the level and quality of services the county can provide.”

The Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR) has been the law of the land since 1992 when voters approved the measure that requires state and local government to seek voter approval before raising taxes. The measure also limits growth in some state spending to population growth, plus inflation. If the state takes in more than it is allowed to spend, the state must return the surplus to taxpayers.

As long as the commissioners are going to shed tears about what they say is a lost $111 million between the years 2015-2015, they might as well lament all the money returned to taxpayers since inception of the law 27 years ago. It’s fraudulent for commissioners to pretend the money has been lost. Voters knew where the money was all along ... and they voted to limit the amount the government could spend. If Jeffco needs more money, they need only ask the voters. Time for commissioners to cut the budget!

Feeling good and feeling melancholy can both feel so good. And just staying in touch with what brings about those feelings is even better than good.

eather observation helps children be alert for changes in their environment and their need to prepare. Sometimes we underestimate what we can teach young chilLIFELONG dren. Weather affects their safety, activities, and clothing choices for the day and family outings.

To get up close and personal they can stick a leg out the door, or observe weather through the window. Start asking questions. Is it sunny or cloudy?

Will we need to wear sunglasses and hat today? Is the sky really cloudy, partly cloudy, or clear? Are there clouds coming in?

They can observe the kinds of clouds. If the clouds are thick like a blanket and it’s rather gray, these stratus clouds are holding lots of possible raindrops or snow. It could be a wet or dreary day.

If there is a blue sky with some big white cotton ball cumulus clouds it could be a nice day to play outside. If these clouds are gray or black (cumulonimbus) we could have a storm. If the sky is clear with just a few high wispy feather cirrus clouds, we probably us, no one can stop us from feeling a certain way, but they sure can have an impact on how they make us feel. For me, some of the songs, sounds, and movies are powerful reminders of people who were and are extremely important to me in my life.

semedia.org also interests kids. Newspapers and television also have great information and get children accustomed to reading maps and forecasting.

Children can take turns giving a weather report for the family and reading maps to learn cities and states.

They can compare their own observations and predictions with professionals’ forecasts. These activities make them more aware of their surroundings. Children enjoy taking photographs of different kinds of clouds and approaching storms or changing weather on lakes. They make excellent subjects for marker, crayon, or watercolor drawings.

All of these activities help children become sharper, observant, and able to take part in adult conversations.

Egypt trip builds bridges in event shared on film

In Lakewood, there are 60 trucks licensed to operate, according to city spokeswoman Stacie Oulton.

Officials there believe the trend is partially driven by diners who want customizable food choices.

Meridith Hatterman, food program coordinator for the TriCounty Health Department, said there were 258 licensed food trucks in Tri-County’s jurisdiction of Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties as of early May. That’s an approximate 35 percent increase over the last five years.

So, he decided to send people who were afraid of Muslims and “the Islamic threat” on an all-expensespaid trip to Egypt.

“I saw a lot of polarity and fear when I Clarke Reader watched the news — all this hostility between groups and mistrust,” Mounib explained on a phone interview from Zurich. “It weighed on me, like a lot of people. I wanted to see if there was a way instead of getting angry and afraid. A different approach. So, I thought I’d offer a nice holiday and a way to connect.”

The resulting documentary, “Free Trip to Egypt,” will be screened June 12 at movie theaters across the country, including theaters in the metro area. It is also available on Cinema on Demand.

Mounib explained that he initially tried to find people to take to Egypt online, but was mainly met with hate and disbelief.

Instead, he took a more personal approach, going to events like a rally for President Donald Trump in Union Square in New York City.

Eventually he convinced seven people, including a former corporal in the Marine Corps and a former Miss Kentucky, to go the ancient country and be hosted by a variety of residents.

“My hope was that all of them would drop their preconceived notions and make some connections, but I never expected the degree of connection that was formed,” he said. “And there were my own judgments. Once I dropped those, I was able to connect with the attendees, even if I didn’t agree with their views.”

The June 12 screening is part of the #PledgeToListen Day of Unity. Following the screening, a 30-minute panel discussion will be broadcast into theaters. The aim is start a discussion about how to listen and bring more kindness to the world and encourage people to take the online #PledgeToListen.

“I want people to feel really inspired and hopeful, because there is a way we can all get along. Things don’t have to be so polarizing and dire,” Mounib said. “We’re not trying to educate, we just want to show audiences the wonderful experience the people who went on this journey had. And maybe we can touch their hearts and make them feel better about world they live in.”

or Andrea Rayford and her husband, a food truck was the best means to reach their overall goal of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant.

“It was basically a lot cheaper to start a food truck,” she said.

Traditional restaurants often come “with a pretty hefty lease,” she said. So, when her chef husband, Jessie, wanted to open his own place, the Parker couple found a food truck on Craigslist, spent six months fixing it up and started working at the local farmers market.

Eventually, the couple started getting requests from breweries or corporate locations for their truck, Jessie’s Smokin’ NOLA, to come to them. They dish up Cajun food inspired by Jessie’s upbringing in New Orleans.

As business grew, they expanded their coverage area north, got licensed in Denver and began participating at Civic Center Eats.

A booming industry Once branching into Denver, Jessie’s Smokin’ NOLA joined the epicenter of the local food truck scene.

In the last six years the number of food trucks operating in the city has grown by 369 percent.

Excise and Licenses Director Ashley Kilroy, with the City and County of Denver, said approximately 700 food trucks were licensed in the city as of late May and they expected to reach 750 by the end of the summer.

While Denver’s food truck industry explodes, suburbs are taking note of that and the broader trend.

Managing growth in Denver Lawrence Bowdish is the director of research and issue networks for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Corporate Citizen Center.

Bowdish said the food truck trend’s origin is often traced to 2008 and attributed to Los Angeles-based food truck Kogi Korean BBQ. The truck put Korean-style meat in Mexican tacos, parked outside a nightclub at night, tweeted its daytime locations and took home $2 million in sales it first year in operation.

“I think that kind of encouraged a lot of other food trucks to be in the space and do it in a way that was different than a rolling white cafeteria,” Bowdish said.

Immigrant groups seized food trucks as an opportunity to serve cuisines that “they knew, to an audience that maybe has never seen it before,” Bowdish said.

Greg Pixley, spokesperson for the Denver Fire Department, said by email the department conducted 467 inspections during the one-stop-shop events at the Denver Animal Shelter in 2016.

That number nearly doubled by 2019. So far, Pixley said, the department has kept up with administrative demands, but they expect the industry will continue growing.

“DFD will need to expand its staffing to accommodate growth of the mobile food industry in the kiosk, standalone and truck areas across the metro area,” he said.

Hatterman said Tri-County has so far kept up with additional workloads that resulted from the food truck trend.

As to whether the trend will keep up or put more pressure on regulatory agencies, she’s not sure.

“It’s really hard without a crystal ball,” she said. “Sometimes there are trends that come and go, but when you look at the trucks and their ability to be mobile and go to different events, take advantage of different sites, I think it may be beneficial for some of those operators versus a brick and mortar.”

Bowdish said Denver is not threatened with a food truck overcrowding issue more than other cities, and of the two dozen Denver owners the chamber surveyed, only one felt there were too many trucks in the city.

“You used to think food trucks were a fad, but they’re not,” said Kelli Narde, Littleton’s director of communications. “I think they’re here to stay.”

Food trucks must receive health inspections and be licensed to operate in the areas they go to. In places like the Denver metro area, where trucks can move from one community to the next with ease, it’s ideal for jurisdictions to work together to streamline the regulatory process, Bowdish said.

That way truck owners aren’t visiting numerous offices and filling out a large number of forms for each community.

“The chamber understands that it’s difficult to have multiple municipalities come together and come up with a joint system,” Bowdish said.

Eric Escudero, spokesman for Denver’s Excise and Licenses department, said Denver regularly gets calls from other jurisdictions and about the city’s regulations, and they hope to serve as a model for neighbors.

In Littleton, the city sees food trucks most often at local breweries or distilleries, places that don’t have kitchens. Littleton has about five city events that include food trucks.

Economic Development Director Denise Stephens said with food trucks’ popularity growing, the city is working across departments to form a pilot program that brings consistency in Littleton food truck policies.

“We are going to probably create a special food truck application and have them register with the city, and then we’re going to ask them to show us proof that they’re licensed with Tri-County (Health Department),” she said. “We want to attract the really good food purveyors and so we

like Rayford’s are “quite common,” Bowdish said, where entrepreneurs use them as a stepping stone toward opening a permanent restaurant.

The U.S. Chamber’s 2018 study, Food Truck Nation, surveyed food truck owners across the country and evaluated regulatory burdens on the industry. The study’s Food Truck Nation index ranks cities on their friendliness toward food trucks.

Denver ranked No. 1 nationally for its ease of obtaining permits and licenses and No. 2, behind Portland, for its overall friendliness toward the industry. Bowdish said a more recent study has not been done.

“In Denver we’re proud of having had such a significant increase and that we’ve managed that growth,” Kilroy said. “We’re trying to be as business-friendly as we can.”

Kilroy said a work group comprising her department, the Denver Fire Department, Denver Department of Public Health and Environment, and Denver Department Public Works, among others, regularly reviews if city regulations are efficient.

The group holds a weekly, one-stopshop at the Denver Animal Shelter, where trucks can receive an inspection and get licensed “on the spot.”

There is also an annual symposium each spring, before the food truck industry’s busy season, to educate truck owners on the inspection and licensing process.

Reflections on the meaning of love

L

ove involves looking at someone subjectively instead of objectively. It asks of me to give my heart to another regardless of whether that person has earned it. In fact, I become willing to overlook the negatives about someone in order to be smitten. I give my heart because I want to be attached to that person. I want to belong to (and with) SOUND that individual, and ADVICE I want that individual to belong to (and with) me.

This love could be romantic and passionate (such as between spouses and lovers). It could be that I have your best interests at heart, treat you lovingly, Neil Rosenthal help you learn and grow, and I protect you to the best of my ability (such as with a child). It could be that I take a great interest and pleasure in nurturing and caring for you, and being good to you (such as with a pet or a friend).

If I say I love you, you can assume that I am saying that I will be attentive to you, interested in how you feel, and that your happiness is important to me. If I say I love you, that implies that I will care for you, treat you well, listen to you and think highly of you. If I say I love you, I might

occasionally create surprises or special experiences that are meant to enrich or delight you, and I will feel a deep affection toward you. Words that are readily associated with love are: warmth, tenderness, fondness, attachment, devotion, compassion, caring and endearing.

So if I treat you as if I’m indifferent to how you feel, or if I’m critical and I communicate that I do not think highly of you; if I don’t consistently treat you as if I value you, or if I focus more on your negative than your positive qualities; if I lose affection for you, or I don’t treat you as a high priority in my life, you could reasonably conclude that I no longer love you. I might communicate all of this even though I still may love you, because I am no longer infatuated with you. This is what often happens to couples who start out deeply in love.

You get disappointed; you see behaviors that were once hidden from you; what you once thought interesting or exciting you now think of as lame or boring, and you fall out of love — and quit giving your heart to the other person.

Another factor has to do with what happens to love over time. Couples that have been together for many years report that it is hard to sustain passion and eroticism over the years, and some conclude that the passion is therefore gone, so it’s time to move on to someone else. But passion wanes

in every relationship given time, and that means you will forever be ending your relationships and searching for another. It therefore becomes important for every one of us to actively put effort into keeping romance and passion alive, because the wild passionate feelings often morph into such things as friendship, companionship, shared identity, family and a shared vision for the future.

What does all of this say about you?

What does this imply regarding how well you give love, and how open you are to receiving love? How well do you communicate that you love someone? Do you love, but are afraid to show it? Do you not let yourself love for very long before you turn judgmental, critical, busy, preoccupied or aloof ? Do you allow yourself to love freely, or are you quick to put your guard up? Who do you love, and how well are you showing it? Do you think those that you love feel loved by you?

We’ve all heard the expression “Once burned, twice shy.” It refers to getting hurt in love, and vowing to never let yourself get that hurt again.

Almost every adult has had some experience with getting hurt in love, and many us have been hurt many times. Does this interfere with your ability or willingness to love freely and uninhibitedly? If so, what would you like to do about this? Do you love the way you are wanting to love? Do you consistently show love the way

SPORTS Young Farmers and Demons baseball squads get valuable state experience

COLORADO SPRINGS — The bright side of Wheat Ridge and Golden going 0-2 at the Class 4A baseball state tournament May 24 and 25 was the experience both Jeffco squads gained for the future.

“We are going to have a chance again. We are going to reload,” Wheat Ridge coach Adam Miller said after a 3-0 loss to Cheyenne Mountain on May 25 at Vibes Stadium in Colorado Springs. “It’s a bad feeling right now, but hopefully nine months from now we’ll be right back at it.”

The 4A Jeffco League champions were in position to avoid dropping down to the loser’s bracket in a firstround game against Silver Creek on May 24 at Mountain Lion Park on the UCCS campus in Colorado Springs.

The Farmers and Raptors played the closest game in the opening round of the eight-team, double-elimination state tournament.

Silver Creek escaped with a 5-4 victory in eight innings. Wheat Ridge ace Aaron Arcilise was brilliant before hitting his pitch-count limit in the eighth inning. The Raptors had a game-winning inside-the-park home run after Arcilise exited the game on a ball misplayed in the outfield.

“Ultimately yesterday really hurt us.

It put us behind the eight-ball,” Coach Miller said, referring to the 5-4 loss to Silver Creek in extra innings. “Credit to these kids. They continued to compete. We had chances. We just couldn’t get the big hit.”

Wheat Ridge (19-8 record) headed over to Vibes Stadium on the morning of May 25 for an elimination game against Cheyenne Mountain (22-6).

Junior Kyle Radi got the start on the hill for the Farmers.

“I felt a little bit of pressure today, but just had to get through it,” Radi said starting on the mound in an elimination game. “I just wanted to help our team get to the next round. Unfortunately it didn’t go our way.”

Radi had just one bad inning against Cheyenne Mountain. The Indians’ lone offensive damage was a two-out, three-run double by senior Aaron Berkhoff in the bottom of the second inning.

“I missed a pitch right down the middle and he (Berkhoff) took advantage of it,” Radi said of the bases-loaded hit by the Indians’ leadoff hitter. “I walked a few guys that inning too. It’s tough, but it happens to everyone.”

Golden junior Ben McLaughlin will again lead the charge for the Demons during the spring of 2020. Golden finished off this season with an 18-8 record after suffering back-to-back losses to Fort Morgan and Erie in the Class 4A baseball state tournament in Colorado Springs on May 24 and 25. popped up to third base with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to end the game.

“This is a tough one to soak in, especially after yesterday where we overall felt like we were the better team,” said Wes Miller, the coach’s son who along with junior Sam Stahl were the only Farmers to have a multiple-hit day against Cheyenne Mountain. “It didn’t go our way today. We couldn’t swing the bat very well. We had chances. We just didn’t execute.”

The Farmers graduate five seniors.

The biggest losses will be Arcilise — 4A Jeffco MVP — and Tate.

“Arcilise had as good of a year we’ve had maybe since Adam Doyle (Wheat Ridge pitcher who graduated in 2007).

He was huge,” Coach Miller said. “Anthony (Tate) kind of anchored us on the backside (closing games) and was a great centerfield for us and is such a great leader.”

Wheat Ridge does return a big part of its core that won the 4A Jeffco League going 11-1 in conference play.

“We are pretty much juniors and sophomores, so you are hoping those kids can build on it,” Coach Miller said. “Hopefully we can get the same opportunity or chance next year being a year wiser, stronger and improve.

That is the whole goal.”

Coach Miller hopes to have lefty pitcher Cael Yenzer back in the mix next year. Surgery before the season prevented Yenzer from playing this

spring.

“He should be,” Miller said of having Yenzer back. “That was a big loss for us this year, but credit to these guys. We lost probably our second best (pitcher), one of our best outfielders and hitters, but it didn’t talk about it much. We just pushed forward.”

Also pushing forward will be the Farmers’ chief rivals — Golden Demons. Golden also went 0-2 in Colorado Springs at the state tournament.

The Demons suffered a 6-1 loss to Fort Morgan at Vibes Stadium on May 24 and were eliminated with a 11-6 loss to Erie on May 25 at Mountain Lions Park on May 25.

Golden is in a similar position with a lot of returning talent after a solid 18-8 season while handing Wheat Ridge its lone conference loss, a 1-0 extra-inning thriller right before the postseason.

“It’s always fun playing Golden,” Coach Miller said. “They are a lot like us. They have a lot of young guys like us. Jackie (Golden coach Jackie McBroom) does a good job. I’m sure it will be a race to the finish again.”

The Demons only graduate a handful of seniors and return one of the best all-around players in 4A in junior Ben McLaughlin. The postseason experience will motivate and inspire the Demons just as it has with the Farmers.

“We’ll take this as a learning experience and move forward,” said Wes Miller before the Farmers left Vibes Stadium. “We’ll get ready for next year.”

t was a long road to graduation, but it was travelled quickly, said Benjamin Berube in his senior address.

“This may be the last time we sit together,” he said.

But “high school is just the beginning of us.”

Golden High School’s Class of 2019 celebrated its commencement on May 24 at Marv Kay Stadium on the Colorado School of Mines campus.

“High school gives us the tasting menu for the rest of our lives,” said Cheyenne Knapp during her senior address.

Even with all these lasts, this is by no means the end.”

NOTICE OF HEARING UPON APPLICATION FOR A NEW BREW PUB LICENSE OF 5280 BEER COMPANY, LLC D/B/A ELEVATED SELTZER 5610 YUKON STREET Notice is hereby given that an application has been presented to the City of Arvada Local Liquor Licensing Authority for a Brew Pub License from 5280 Beer Company, LLC, d/b/a Elevated Seltzer, 5610 Yukon Street, Arvada, Colorado, whose Member is Hunter Wood, 100% owner and managing member, of 5610 Yukon Street, Arvada, CO. The license would allow sales of malt, vinous and spirituous liquor by the drink for consumption on the premises at 5610 Yukon Street, Arvada, Colorado.

Said application will be heard and considered by the City of Arvada Liquor Licensing Authority at a meeting to be held in the Arvada Municipal Complex Council Chambers, 8101 Ralston Road at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019.
