Polaske, Barclay to have preliminary hearing in June Suspects of April 13 homicide remain in jail

The two suspects accused of being involved in an April 13 homicide in Golden remain in the Jefferson County jail on a nobond hold.

At about 4:15 p.m. on April 13, Jefferson County Sheriff ’s deputies responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 800 block of Kilmer Street, which is near the I-70 and West Colfax Avenue interchange. The victim, Kristian Macleod, 44, was Barclay transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. He was pronounced

dead at 4:50 p.m.

For their alleged participation in the murder, Laci Barclay, 24, was arrested on April 14 and Joshua Polaske, 28, was arrested on April 15.

Charges against Polaske were filed on April 22. Those Polaske charges include first degree murder, distribution of a controlled substance,

possession of a weapon by a previous offender — all felonies — and two violent crime counts.

On April 19, two felony charges were filed against Barclay — accessory to murder and distribution of a controlled substance.

However, on May 3, an additional count of first degree murder was added to her charges.

Arrest affidavits remain sealed for both suspects. Polaske and Barclay will return to court for a preliminary hearing at 8 a.m.

What Is Negotiated When Purchasing a Home? More Than You Might Think!

It’s easy to assume that the main (or only) negotiation in the sale or purchase of a home is the contract price, but it turns out that there’s a lot more negotiation — both before and after going under contract.

Most contracts are or should be countered, and not accepted as written. For example, there are 39 different deadlines in the standard contract — everything from when the earnest money check is delivered to when the buyer gets to take possession.

If the seller is given extended possession after closing, will it be free, and who pays the utilities? It’s all negotiated.

If a contract falls, it’s usually because of inspection issues, so the seller will want that inspection deadline to be as early as possible — preferably within 5 to 7 days. And there are other

deadlines which allow a buyer to terminate and get his earnest money back, so a good listing agent will make sure they are reasonable. For example, I have seen contracts in which the deadline for terminating based on the acceptability of insurance costs is a week prior to closing. That’s ridiculous, because it takes only a couple days to get that quote.

The second big negotiation in any transaction is over inspection issues. Some buyers will want to have the seller fix every single problem identified by their inspector. (Once my seller received an inspection objection notice that didn’t even itemize the problems but said, “Seller shall fix everything listed in the attached inspection report.”)

will not fix and what the seller might give as a credit in lieu of certain repairs is different in every transaction, and your agent’s experience in handling that process can be critical in obtaining a favorable outcome, whether you’re the buyer or the seller.

As I have written before, I advise my sellers not to fix many of the known problems prior to putting their house on the market, but to save some of them as bargaining chips during the negotiation over inspection issues. Getting a back-up contract in place also helps with negotiating inspection issues. If the buyer is asking for an unreasonable number of repairs, I’ll provide those demands and the buyer’s inspection report to the backup buyer. Often that back-up buyer will agree not to ask for any of those repairs, giving the seller the ability to tell buyer #1 that he won’t fix anything. This can be an effective technique.

Having multiple offers presents a great opportunity for negotiating matters that are important to the seller. For ex-

ample, a downsizing seller may have lots of furniture he’d like to sell. Rather than have an estate sale, I recommend making a list, with prices, of the items “for sale outside of closing,” and leaving it on the kitchen counter for every visiting buyer to see. Many times I have been able to have the winning bidder include in their contract that they will purchase everything on that list at the prices shown. In a most recent case, the buyer asked that all the purchased furniture be moved to the garage prior to closing — a sure sign that they bought the furniture only so they would win the winning war for the house!

If the home doesn’t appraise for the contract price, the buyer can demand a price reduction on threat of terminating the contract. Since the appraisal deadline is usually very close to the closing date, the seller may feel compelled to accept the price reduction rather than lose the contract. But the same reluctance exists for the buyer, so oftentimes the seller can negotiate little or no price reduction.

Jeffco to make budget cuts in 2020 TABOR limits put strain on budget as county continues to grow

To keep a healthy balance and appropriate reserve fund, Jefferson County is looking at trimming its budget by about $16.1 million in the upcoming year.

This equals roughly a seven percent budget reduction in 2020 for all county “offices, departments and divisions whose budget is impacted by the general fund,” states a press release.

The general fund supports a variety of county offices and departments. For example, in the press release, Libby Szabo, chair of the Board of County Commissioners, breaks

the general fund into three primary areas of expenditures — safety and transportation, including the sheriff ’s department, district attorney, coroner and transportation and engineering; stewardship, which includes the assessor, clerk and recorder and treasurer; and health and well-being, with the departments of public health, human services and parks and recreation.

Szabo notes that about 67 percent of the budget is spent on public safety, 25 percent on the stewardship services and eight percent on health and well-being.

The county’s funding comes primarily from property taxes.

One challenge that has prompted the need to cut the budget is the Colorado Tax Payer Bill of Rights (TABOR), which limits the amount of tax revenue that the county can keep.

This money would have otherwise been invested in “public safety, roads, mental healthcare, wildfire protection and other areas,” according to the press release. “The loss of this surplus funding has a direct impact on the

However, population growth in Jeffco lends to the increased demand for services.

Survey on cuts The county has posted a poll on its website that asks residents what services they would be “most willing to reduce” in the case of budget

cuts. Total vote turnout was 233.

Cuts to public health services got the most votes — 83 votes, or, 36 percent.

New road construction for traffic easement returned 57 votes, or, 24 percent. However, road maintenance and snow plowing only got 11 percent of the vote, or, 26 votes to reduce these services.

Fifty-one votes, 22 percent, went to cutting social services for seniors, children and families in need.

Reducing law enforcement services got the smallest number of votes — 16 total votes, or, seven percent.

“Tough decisions are ahead of us,” Szabo said in the press release. “We will rely on the elected officials and directors as the experts in their areas to determine how best to make these reductions, and we will work together with them and our community to prioritize what approaches are in the best interest of Jeffco.”

District and employees need more time to find common ground Groups still haggling over cost of living increases

At their last scheduled bargaining session on May 15, school district leaders and employees continued to negotiate an agreement for their 20192020 contract — and scheduled a new final session for May 29.

The additional session, which will occur between the district and Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) members, will resolve the potential contract changes the group has not yet agreed upon. The list includes setting the cost-of-living adjustment,

or COLA, added to employee salaries.

In previous meetings between the district and the JCEA, as well as the district and the Jeffco Education Support Professionals Association (JESPA), the district proposed a .67 percent COLA to current salaries, said JESPA president Lara Center.

This COLA would add to the raises employees receive based on the steps and levels they’ve reached on the district’s salary schedule.

trict’s chief human resources officer, the average employee on the salary schedule will receive a 2.85 percent raise. Additionally, employees’ salaries will be 2.67 percent higher than their 2018-2019 salaries were, due to the passage of measure 5A. JCEA and JESPA members voiced concerns about the potential .67 percent COLA, stating that their ideal COLA would weigh in at about 10 percent.

Class of 2019 graduates from Ralston Valley High School Graduates receive more than $10 million in scholarships

s Ralston Valley High School’s class of 2019 held its graduation ceremony on May 17, the students celebrated four completed years of high school and the years ahead of them.

“No matter how you define success, never stop working toward it,” faculty speaker Barb Schrader told graduates during the ceremony at the CU Events Center.

Among the students’ celebrated achievements was more than $10 million in college scholarships awarded to 102 of the class’s students.

In her address to the class, senior class president Madelaine Hipp shared quotes she’d received from staff members. In preparation for her speech, Hipp asked Ralston Valley staff how they would describe the class of 2019.

“Our teachers saw us as bold and determined,” she said, “and finally, the word that describes us best is family.”

‘Passion behind what we were singing’ Song written by student performed for the first time to honor shooting victims

ay 10 was a day of firsts for choir teacher Chris Maunu as he directed a piece that was full of challenges, changed at the last minute and unusually captivating for the audience.

“When we performed, the audience was absolutely silent — there was no shuffling around, no checking the program,” said the Arvada West High School choir director. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The piece, “A Hive of Frightened Bees,” focuses on the fear students face as gun violence becomes more prevalent within schools. Arvada West’s Company West choir performed the song for the first time at its concerts on May 10 and 11.

The song’s lyrics come from a poem written last year in an Arvada West class by former student Taylor Huntley.

Huntley wrote her poem, “A Hope for Change,” in response to a violent threat written on one of the school’s bathroom walls. The threat was written just after 17 died in a school shooting in Parkland, Fla. “There was a lot of trauma and frustration that the students had to

He added that the threat took an emotional toll on the community as, after being discovered in the late afternoon, the threat was not fully investigated and dismissed until the next morning.

and share it with her choir class, leading Maunu to post the poem in a Facebook group for choir directors. He was soon approached by Andrea Ramsey, a composer and music educator, who said she wanted to put the words to music.

Maunu agreed, deciding with Ramsey that the Company West choir would be the first group to perform the piece.

The choir performed just days after the May 7 incident at STEM School Highlands Ranch, in which one was killed and eight were injured. The tragedy prompted Maunu and Ramsey to edit the piece at the last minute, adding the name of the STEM School to a list of schools which the choir

Bissell, who has been with the district five years, works four jobs so he can pay his bills, he said. He added that he is unsure how long this will continue.

“As a young educator, I see the longtime educators and I think, `is that going to be my story, too?’” he said.

Bell reported that the average 2017-2018 teacher salary in Jeffco was $57,154, ranking the district fifth out of seven comparable districts. According to Bell, Jeffco also ranks fifth among districts for available funding.

During the session, JCEA members suggested the district allocate unspent money from the previous year toward compensation. However, district representatives stressed the importance of utilizing that money to build reserves, adding that some of that money has already been earmarked for specific purposes.

“We have a large amount of dollars

He added that he allocated about 60 percent of the class’s daily rehearsal time to the piece, finding that the technical and emotional aspects of the song warranted extra rehearsal time.

“It was more difficult than what we usually do,” he said. “The vocal parts are more complex, and we spent a lot of time in discussion about the topic.”

Kaylee Nguyen, a senior at Arvada West, said the emotional nature of the piece played a role not only in rehearsals but also in the performances.

“There were moments on stage when I had to bring myself back and not let the emotions weigh me down,” she said, “but I think the emotions helped, because there was passion behind what we were singing.”

She added that she and her peers had been looking forward to sharing the song with the community.

“I think over the entire choir, even though it was something new and scary, we were definitely willing to try it,” she said.

“Choir is so connective by its nature.

It’s one of the best places to approach different topics,” Maunu said. “The kids have had some really healing conversations.”

Maunu said he may assign the piece to other choirs in the future and that any choir director in the country can now use the piece.

As for the first performance, he felt the long hours of rehearsal paid off in the moments at the end of the concert.

“There was an epic standing ovation that seemed to last several minutes,” he said. “I think this can get people thinking and talking about the topic in a responsible way.”

“Where is the time to decompress and take care of ourselves when we can’t even pay our bills?” she said.

Arvada businesswoman opens new early education academy Center addresses need in city of ‘childcare deserts’

When Olivia Zhou moved to Arvada in 2017, one of her first priorities was to find a preschool for her five-year-old daughter. Faced with what she described as unreasonable waitlists and outdated curriculum, she took matters into her own hands.

“I’ve always had a passion for children and education,” she said. “I just said, `there’s a need for preschools, so I am going to start one on my own.’”

After two years of research and preparation, Zhou opened Arvada West’s location of The Learning Experience Academy of Early Education, a franchise with 10 locations in Colorado.

Opened at 14815 W. 64th Ave. in midApril, the year-round childcare center offers programs for children ages six weeks to six years old, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays.

By adding a new childcare center to the area, Zhou hopes to address the lack of childcare availability she faced two years ago in Arvada, which continues today.

According to 2017 data from the Center for American Progress, five census districts within Arvada qualify as “childcare deserts.” The report defines these deserts as areas in which

there are three or more times as many children under age five as there are available spots in childcare facilities.

“We have new neighborhoods being built with young families moving into those locations,” Zhou said, “so we’re fulfilling that need.”

She also aims to provide an option for parents seeking preschools with a 21st century curriculum.

“Childcare is evolving as technology and research are evolving,” she said. “A lot of centers are still using paper while we have age-appropriate technology.”

The academy incorporates technology in several ways, including iPads that teachers use to keep parents updated on classes and computers on which preschoolers complete the online portion of their curriculum.

“If the parents allow the screen time, which is about 15 minutes per child per day, the children can work on their computer skills at the preschool level,” she said.

Currently, 40 children are enrolled at the center, Zhou said, leaving room for about 130 additional students to enroll.

Zhou said she plans to franchise a second location within the next five years. She also has plans to give back to the community, dedicating a playground to the city and joining or starting a nonprofit.

“I’m very passionate about empowering women and children, including through our women-majority workforce,” she said. “That’s one of my biggest goals.”

Legislators forming committee to focus on school safety Panel to be named

by June 1 in response to attack at STEM School STAFF REPORT

Legislators are prioritizing school safety following the May 7 shootings at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

On May 17, members of the state House and Senate announced the pending formation of an interim

committee focused on studying school safety in Colorado, according to a news release. The committee will look at issues related to school safety, mental health and the prevention of threats to students, staff and volunteers statewide.

Supporters of the committee include House GOP Leader Patrick Neville, of Castle Rock, and Senate Minority Leader Chris Holbert, R-Parker.

In the release, Holbert pointed out that 178 school districts in Colorado operate under local control, per state constitution.

“We also have voluminous state

statute already on the books regarding emergency response planning and armed security in our public schools,” Holbert said. “This interim committee will begin its work by reviewing those statutes, the division of constitutional authority between school districts and state government, and then they will move forward on proposing solutions to better protect students.”

Neville pointed out what has been done.

“We began the process last year by providing financial assistance to schools to secure their facilities and fund trained personnel to enhance

physical protection,” he said in the release. “We’ve also provided funding to enable professionals to come alongside students to assist with their personal needs should tragedy strike.

We will do more.”

Two members from each caucus in both chambers will serve on the bipartisan committee, which will have the opportunity “to seek testimony from a wide range of experts to aid in their mission.” Members of the committee — who will be appointed by June 1 — will meet three times during the interim session and have the ability to recommend legislation.

Citizens rally at Capitol for gun rights Rally for Our Rights urges people push back against red flag law

Dennis Gatchalian has lived in the Unites States since 1984, the year he left his home in the Philippines. He’s resided in Denver for 35 years.

On May 18, he stood in front of the state Capitol listening to speakers at the pro-gun event, Rally for Our Rights, which drew more than 100 people. His experiences growing up under a regime that instated martial law in the 1970s, and watching his brother arrested, jailed and sentenced to hard labor for possessing a leaflet, brought him to the steps of the Capitol that day.

“I know what oppression is and I can see the parallels here,” he said.

Throughout the day, a common theme emerged. Gun rights proponents believe the right to bear arms protects all

other rights, and they worry issues including Colorado’s red flag law are one more step toward their biggest fear — a total disarming of the public.

Gatchalian was one of several attendees who spoke with Colorado Community Media or held signs stating their fear the nation is on a path toward

disarming citizens.

The rally opened with a speech from Robert Wareham, the attorney leading recall efforts against Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock. Wareham maintained Colorado’s new red flag law is unconstitutional and gun grab legislation.

“This is going to be abused,” he said from the podium.

Wareham spoke to a crowd that booed Spurlock’s name and cheered at the mention of recalling him. Spurlock had violated their trust, they believed, by backing the law.

Booths offered information on recall efforts against Spurlock and Gov. Jared Polis.

Judith Cody drove from her home in Colorado Springs to participate. Cody feels pro-gun citizens have compromised with gun control advocates on numerous issues, naming bump stock bans as one example, but that further gun restrictions like the red flag law, also called an Extreme Risk Protection Order, keep coming.

“We give and we give but it’s not enough,” she said.

Cody attended with her 20-year-old son, Thomas, who also dislikes ERPO and called it “the most relevant issue right now” in Colorado related to gun debates.

“I’m concerned that it takes due process out of the equation,” he said. “It puts you in a he said, she said situation.”

Thomas said his interest in guns is first because owning them is a constitutional right,

second because they provide a method of self-defense and lastly because he enjoys sports shooting.

Throughout the day, Tony Genella of Centennial held a sign on one side reading “97.8% of mass shootings are in gun-free zones.” He’d like for teachers to carry weapons on school grounds if they want to and if they have undergone conceal carry classes.

“I strictly oppose gun-free zones,” he said. “I believe that our schools are the most vulnerable areas.”

The event took place 11 days after Colorado’s most recent school shooting, which left an 18-year-old senior at STEM School Highland Ranch, Kendrick Castillo, dead and eight others injured.

Speakers at the event urged citizens to support recalls of Spurlock, Polis and state Rep. Tom Sullivan and to push back against gun control measures like the red flag bill.

Cody listened, and like Gatchalian, worried the government would succeed a disarming people completely if people don’t protest.

“I know people say, `Oh, it never will,’” she said.

“They’re trying.”

y the time you read this, we’ll know if James Holzhaur is still the reigning champion of Jeopardy! And although I don’t wish his opponents ill, I do hope he continues his record-busting performances.

On the other hand, some other people just love to hate on James.

Although James is sometimes referred to as a Goliath, he is a mortal human being just like the rest of us. Most contestants don’t come close, true, but that happens in any runaway game. James has had some close ones, victorious by only $18 recently but, through careful wager-

available to any contestants willing to employ them. James, on the other hand, also has the remarkable ability to rapidly access the motherlode of information in his brain.

As you might guess, James is a topic of discussion across the media spectrum, in analyses of his strategy, his possible vulnerabilities, and his life as a professional sports gambler. Here is where the conversation turns ugly.

In a New York Times article last week, James outlined his path to victory in the context of his childhood and young adult life. It’s probably not surprising to learn that James is

That growth is reflected in the event’s name, now Denver Pop Culture Con instead of Denver Comic Con.

onspiracy theories used to be something the American people might laugh about or just write off, but increasingly they’ve become a disturbing facet of modern discourse. The roots of conspiracy theories go way back in our country’s history, but mass COMING ATTRACTIONS communication like radio made it easier to spread the message.

An early adopter was California resident Mae Brussell, who had a popular radio show in the 1970s and 1980s. She used her platform to make spurious Clarke Reader claims such as linking the two Kennedy assassinations with the Watergate scandal. And people listened.

“What was so fascinating and a little scary was how relevant some of the predictions she was making are to today,” said Josh Hartwell, who wrote a play about Brussell. “She had this dedication, maybe even obsession, with research and connecting all these dots she saw.”

“Queen of Conspiracy” makes its world premiere through June 23 at Miners Alley Playhouse, 1224 Washington Ave. in Golden. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Directed by Len Matheo, the show features Abby Apple Boes as Brussell, as well as Chloe McLeod, Sinjin Jones, Bill Hahn, Erica Borrillo and Damon Guerrasio. It is set in presentday Denver and imagines the family that inherits Brussell’s legacy. It also takes audiences on a historical trip to Brussell’s heyday to see how conspiracy theories have changed over the years.

“She did hundreds of hours on her radio program, and I was able to listen to some,” Hartwell said. “The tapes were the most helpful for me in writing the piece.”

Hartwell said he wrote the play in about two weeks in January and has remained a part of the process as it’s come to life on the stage.

“I helped Len cast the play and have been to a handful of rehearsals.

Denver Pop Culture Con honors comic roots while appealing to all generations

lot can change in eight years — something Littleton residents Kendra, Jason and Ash Alder can readily attest to when it comes to how Denver Pop Culture Con has evolved since its first iteration in 2012.

“When we first started going, it wasn’t nearly as big as it has become,” Kendra said. “When I was growing up, nerd culture was very taboo, but it’s done a complete 180.

When I would mention a lot of this stuff, people had never heard of it.

Now everyone knows.”

This year’s event returns to the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th St., from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, and 10 a.m. to

The newer name reflects a wider swath of mediums and influences than comics alone.

“Since inception, our event has been about inclusivity and bringing different fandoms together for a weekend-long celebration; comics culture has always been a key component but not the entire focus,” Angel wrote. “While it’s true that ‘comic con’ is often synonymous with pop culture conventions, we didn’t feel that it told the whole story.”

The worlds created in comics from Marvel, DC and countless other studios remain the wellspring for many films and television shows that have made nerd culture everyone’s culture — and the con is a great way to bridge the gap between these fans.

“At our store, that’s one of the things we talk about the most — how to connect people who see all the movies with the stories we have at our store,” said Jonthan Garnett, owner of Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles in Parker, which has had a booth at the con for about the past five years. “If you’re a fan of something you’ve seen onscreen, there’s a good chance we have something that will scratch that itch.”

Kendra and Jason, who used to own a comic book store, said the con works hard to balance a celebration of all mediums while acknowledging that comics are the source and are constantly evolving.

“I’ve also done a couple rewrites during the process,” he said. “It’s been exciting and intimidating, especially since I happen to be really judgmental of my own stuff.”

The show delves deep into the murky world of conspiracy theories, and Hartwell hopes audiences are willing to listen.

“I hope people come with an open mind, watch it and leave with an open mind as well,” he said. “Hopefully, afterwards, people will be more open to asking questions and not just thinking one thing is the answer.”

“They want all kinds of people to keep coming back, and that’s why they do,” Kendra said. “You can do what you want, be free, and not be ashamed of what you like.”

Another way the con works to keep bringing people back is by fostering the next generation of nerds. The

event is a program of the Pop Culture Classroom, a nonprofit focused on youth literacy, Angel said. The work the group does all year is supported by the con. As for the actual event, all kinds of options exist beyond shopping and getting a photo with a favorite celebrity.

“Programming also includes exciting kid- and teen-focused activities and events in The Lab, which is a large space on the show floor dedicated to young folks,” Angel wrote.

“The lab activities can include anything from learning to draw a famous character, to presentations and workshops, to finding out how to one day work for NASA or become an actor.”

For Garnett and many other attendees and exhibitors, the con is a chance for real connection with fans of all ages.

“We get to talk to consumers and fans, not just from the area, but all over the country,” he said.

Kendra said Ash particularly enjoys the con’s cosplaying aspect. But

Colorado Railroad Museum turns 60 Golden’s Colorado Railroad Museum turns 60 years old this July, and the museum is marking the occasion with a look back at the past six decades of exhibits, events and adventure.

The 60th anniversary exhibit will be on display at the museum, 17155 W. 44th Ave., through October. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit makes use of archival materials from the museum’s permanent collection and takes visitors on a trip through the past, not only of the museum, but of the railroads.

she loves immersing him in comic culture because of the positive way it affects him and other children.

“We take our niece as well, and their favorite part is taking pictures with as many cosplayers as possible,” she said. “I think it’s all a great influence on kids, and especially is great for reading. I always see it like going to Disneyland — you’re meeting the characters you’ve seen on the big screen, right there.”

Rock out with fellow Denverites Denver doesn’t have much in the way of music festivals these days, but Denver Day of Rock brings a bevy of artists to one of the city’s busiest stretches of real estate.

The one-day music festival that supports the work of Amp the Cause, a nonprofit that improves the livelihood of children by bringing communities to work together for their betterment.

Westminster honors those who serve Annual Armed Forces Day event adds bricks to tribute garden

Westminster added bricks honoring 157 current and former members of the U.S. armed forces to its tribute garden May 18 during its annual celebration of Armed Forces Day. The city also announced that several new sculptures are in the works and will be added to the garden, each highlighting one of the U.S. branches — Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, the Coast Guard and the U.S. Merchant Marines.

“Today, here, we honor the men and women who represent our country all over the world, serving this country in the field of experience,” Speaker Anthony Abeyta, a retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and member of the local American Legion. “Everyone here today, we will never forget our loved ones who served or are currently serving to keep America united and to promote freedom.”

Armed Forces Day is one of three annual military commemorations in the U.S. While Memorial Day — the fourth Monday each May — honors veterans who died in service and Veterans Day honors all who have served annually on Nov. 11, Armed Forces Day honors everyone who has served, is serving or plans to serve. It was first marked in 1950 and occurs annually on the third Saturday each May. “I think we are on our 11th year doing this celebration,” said Westminster Marketing Coordinator Leah Krumpholz. “It’s open to any one who has served. Last year, we inducted our first military canine.”

Westminster’s Armed Forces Tribute Garden is located on 104th Avenue, just east of U.S. 36 and along the city’s Recreation Center parks and Christopher Fields. Anyone can purchase a brick honoring anyone serving in a branch of the U.S. military and have it placed each May after the Armed Forces Day ceremony.

“The Tribute Garden recognizes more than 1,500 members of military, past and present,” Mayor Herb Atchison said. “We give thanks to those who currently serve, those who served in the past, those who lost their lives in service and those who will serve in the future.”

The tribute garden features a central sculpture surrounded by six pillars marking each of the branches of the military. The areas around the pillars are filled with the bricks honoring those who have served.

The 2019 ceremony featured the

city’s Fire and Police Honor Guard, the El Jebel Shrine Pipe and Drum Corps and member of two American Legion Posts, Post 11-11 and 22. It included a 21 gun salute and concluded with the release of 22 doves.

Nearly 100 attended the ceremony, many of them families who had placed bricks in the garden previously.

Many marked the bricks belonging to their family members with small flags.

Atchison said noted that this year’s ceremony featured several graduating seniors from Westminster-area high

schools who are beginning their military service. That included graduating seniors from Standley Lake High School, Westminster High School, Hidden Lake and Jefferson Academy.

Proceeds from the sales of the bricks are used to maintain the garden but also to purchase the new sculptures that have been commissioned for the garden.

“This garden is not finished,” Atchison said. “With the help of the volunteers, from corporations and many individuals, we are raising the final funds for the last six statues.”

Fort Logan bore witness to Western history Beyond veterans’ cemetery is old Army post dating to 1880s

A growing nation By the 1880s, with the Transcontinental Railroad nearly 20 years old and the West’s indigenous people forced onto reservations, the Army was looking to close and consolidate its far-reaching network of pioneer-era forts, said Dr. Jack Ballard, a retired Air Force Academy history professor whose book “Images of America: Fort Logan” is one of the few sources that deals at length with the fort’s history.

Denver, by then a rapidly growing metropolis, seemed a natural location for a new urban-type fort, Ballard

Mention Fort Logan to most people in the Denver area, and they’ll picture Fort Logan National Cemetery, where thousands of America’s veterans lay beneath rows of precisely-laid headstones.

But just up the hill from the solemn silence of the cemetery is the old Army fort itself, now hosting an array of mental health facilities, where much of the stately 19th-century architecture still stands.

Tucked away in far-south Denver near Sheridan Boulevard and Quincy Avenue, Fort Logan is “a place where you can step out of your car, take a moment to reflect, and envision the contributions of men who helped make Colorado,” said Bart Berger, whose great-grandfather Col. Henry Merriam once commanded the fort.

Visitors today can wander the fort, taking in the grand Victorian buildings of Officers’ Row, or pay a visit to the fort museum to gain a better sense of a place that played a role in pivotal moments of the American saga.

The first troops at what would become Fort Logan arrived from Kansas in October 1887. Named for Civil War general Alexander Logan, the fort soon began taking in soldiers from around the West. Col. Merriam, who would be the fort’s longest-serving commander, arrived with troops from Wyoming’s Fort Laramie in 1889, Ballard said.

Fort Logan’s soldiers soon found themselves part of history. In 1890, Merriam and six companies deployed

Fort Logan’s “salute gun,” which dates to the Civil War, sits in front of the Field Officer’s Quarters, which today houses the fort museum. by train to South Dakota, where they joined hundreds of troops encircling fleeing Lakota after soldiers killed Chief Sitting Bull, Ballard said.

Merriam’s troops were nearby on Dec. 29, 1890, when American troops massacred upward of 300 Lakota men, women and children at Wounded Knee, though Ballard said Fort Logan troops did not take part in the killing.

Fort Logan’s troops served as strikebreakers during several labor conflict in the 1890s, including during the

nationwide Pullman railroad strike of 1894, according to historian Almont Lindsey. Troops from the fort traveled to Trinidad in southern Colorado, where they protected deputy marshals as they arrested dozens of union leaders. They would be put to use amid other labor strife in northern New Mexico.

Baldwin and the balloon — dubbed the General Myer — deployed with troops from the fort to Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, though the balloon was soon shot down by Spanish artillery.

A new century As America’s military priorities increasingly shifted overseas in the 20th century, Fort Logan took on new life as a recruitment depot, Ballard said.

“By the time of the First World War, the countryside was starting to fill in, and there wasn’t enough room to maneuver,” Ballard said, but the fort proved invaluable as the country mobilized for the war.

Thousands of recruits and draftees mustered at Fort Logan, filling rows of tents stretching across the grounds before heading out to coastal military bases to be shipped overseas.

New Deal-era work programs shored up and expanded Fort Logan’s facilities during the period between the World Wars, Ballard said, before reaching a new fever pitch as American involvement in World War II loomed.

The fort became a subpost of the Army Air Corp’s Lowry Field on the east side of Denver, according to Ballard, and later added a convalescent hospital. As many as 5,500 men were

Many temporary buildings were added to the fort grounds during the war — mostly temporary wooden structures, of which few remain.

After the war, the fort was declared military surplus, and used for a time as a Veterans Administration hospital, before eventually being handed over to the State of Colorado in 1960 to become a mental health hospital.

Place of healing Today, the fort’s idyllic grounds make for a therapeutic environment for patients dealing with mental illness, said David Polunas, the director of the Colorado Mental Health Insti-

tute at Fort Logan.

“Having dozens of acres with mature trees and big grassy areas is a calming, healing environment for our patients that you might not easily find elsewhere in the Denver suburbs,” Polunas said. “It’s quiet and spread out in a way few other facilities are.”

The hospital currently has 94 beds for persistently mentally ill patients, Polunas said, down from about 400 beds when the facility opened — part of a nationwide effort toward moving mentally ill patients out of inpatient facilities.

The hospital itself has its own significant history, Polunas said, as a forerunner in what were in the 1960s new concepts in mental health treatment, focused on quality of life.

“It was a response to the dungeonlike atmosphere of earlier institutions,” Polunas said. “We have a deep respect for the history of this place, and are proud to shepherd it into the future.”

The sale, which has a more than 20-year history in the community, offers more than 80,000 books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and more with prices starting at 50 cents.

“This event is always popular with book lovers from throughout Jefferson County and beyond,” Jo Schantz, executive director of the Jefferson County Library Foundation, said in a news release. “Each year, our Whale of a Used Book Sales help us raise tens of thousands of dollars which in turn benefit the programs of Jefferson County Public Library.”

LAKEWOOD — Sarah Piper admitted she got a little lucky May 15 at Lakewood Memorial Field.

“Sometimes you get a little lucky,” Piper said about scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory for No. 14-seeded Ralston Valley over No. 11 Columbine in a Class 5A girls soccer state quarterfinal. “Today we got a little lucky and sometimes you need that.”

The Ralston Valley senior midfielder took a direct-free kick in the final seconds of the first half. Piper faced a three-person wall, but before taking the kick saw a bit of any opening.

“It’s funny I’m not a free-kick taker, but anytime I shoot it’s normally with my left foot,” Piper said. “I knew I could probably bend it and I saw the keeper move toward the far post. I figured I could bend it over the wall and see what happens. I got a little lucky.”

Piper’s shot bent over the wall and toward the near post. Columbine junior goalie Elizabeth Michael was in position to make the save moving toward the post, but the ball slipped through her and into the net.

“The game of soccer is you work hard and sometimes you get lucky,” Ralston Valley coach Kamee Morwood said of the goal with eight seconds left in the first half. “It was a great shot and we got a little lucky on it, but we continued to play well to finish out the game.”

Ralston Valley (13-3-2 record) ended up being the lone Jeffco team to make the 5A semifinals May 18 at Echo Park in Parker.

The Mustangs’ season came to an

end with a 1-0 loss to Grandview. The Mustangs came up one-game short of advancing to the championship game for the first time in five years.

Ralston Valley was in the 5A title game against Columbine back in 2014, losing to the Rebels 3-1.

The first meeting between Columbine and Ralston Valley this season ended with the Rebels scoring two second-half goals at Lakewood Memorial for a 2-0 victory.

Freshman Riley Kaali-Nagy and junior Peyton Weber had a goal and assist each to account for Columbine’s scoring.

“There were both really close games,” Piper said comparing the two meeting. “I think both games could have gone either way.”

Since the loss, Ralston Valley went 6-0-1 coming into the quarterfinal. The Mustangs knocked off No. 3 Fruita Monument in the second round out on the Western Slope with a 1-0 win.

“It’s so fun. These girls have worked so hard, as have (Columbine). We knew it was going to be an emotional battle between teams,” Morwood said.

“It’s always hard when you go in and play a rival in this kind of a game.”

Columbine (15-5-1) also needed a road victory to advance to the quarterfinals. The Rebels upset No. 6 Regis Jesuit in the second round to set up the all-Jeffco quarterfinal.

The game saw the end of a brilliant prep soccer career of Columbine senior Tessa Barton, who will play for the University of Colorado next school year. Barton had 24 goals on the season and finished her career with 57 tallies.

Ralston Valley senior defender Sophie Moran was up to the task of keeping Barton from getting on the scoresheet.

“It was hard, but I’ve been up against her (Barton) before and I know how to do it,” Moran said of marking one of the elite goal scorers

‘When I think of Kendrick, I think of love’ Thousands gather to honor Kendrick Castillo at celebration of life

That was the overarching message at a May 15 celebration of life service at Cherry Hills Community Church.

More than 3,500 people gathered at the church to honor Castillo, the sole fatality in the May 7 school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch that left eight other students injured. Less than two weeks away from graduating, the 18-year-old charged one of the two suspects to save other students.

The crowd — a mix of STEM students and families, law enforcement, politicians, Douglas County School District leaders and local residents — filled the sanctuary of the Highlands Ranch church to celebrate Castillo, a young man who, by most accounts, lived and learned more in his 18 years than most do in a lifetime.

“Kendrick just seemed to be happiest when he was serving others, but he did this humbly,” Charlene Molis, Kendrick’s principal at Notre Dame School from kindergarten through eighth grade, said to the crowd. “We are all better people for having known

Kendrick, and now he is our guardian angel.”

A group of young men, friends of Kendrick, carried a gray casket, adorned with bouqets of bright yellow roses down an aisle to the front of the sanctuary. On the stage were a kayak, black and red dress jackets hanging from the ceiling and an elaborate robot, all pieces of Castillo’s life. He wore the red jacket when he ushered at his church. He was on two robotics teams at STEM. And he loved to adventure outdoors.

Friends, family and teachers who spoke at the service painted a picture of Castillo and the impact he had on others.

Molis remembers Kendrick’s first

day of kindergarten. He saw a kid crying across the room, so he walked over, put his arm around the child and told him it was going to be OK. He gave 110 percent in everything, Molis said. When he dressed up as a cowboy, he was the best-dressed cowboy in the room.

“When he went to Mass, he wore his signature, three-piece suit,” Molis said. Guests in the audience chuckled.

Castillo was a friend to many.

He met Jordon Monk in an engineering class. The two had a lot in common — detailing cars, tinkering with electronics, the movie “Wayne’s World,” the song “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

had the time of our lives doing it,” Monk said.

Two pastors and a reverend, who each represented a different church in the Denver metro area, encouraged hope, love and healing in the community. A member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization to which Castillo belonged, along with a few of Castillo’s teachers, reflected on the difference Castillo made in the world.

Mike Shallenberger, Castillo’s engineering teacher for four years, laid over Castillo’s casket an honor cord for his involvement in STEM’s Technology Student Association.

“When I think of Kendrick,” Shallenberger said, “I think of love.”

In his father’s eyes, Castillo was a “gift” and a “hero.”

He was a man of faith, John Castillo told the audience. He knew right from wrong. He cared deeply about his family and friends.

“To carry on his life’s message, we need to be more like him,” said John.

His wife, Maria, was seated behind him. “When somebody is struggling and moving into darkness, you need to sit down with them and figure it out.”

John emphasized the importance of making time for one another, of being present. He wants to do just that for the friends Kendrick left behind. His door is open, he said. He’s a phone call away. He wants to hear the stories of his son.

“Love is simple,” John said. “I didn’t teach him that, he taught me.”
