What do you do at Inland Island Yeast Laboratories?

We grow yeast and bacterias for the brewing industry. We have customers locally here in the Denver metro area as well as all over the state and nationally.

Some of those include New Image Brewing in Arvada, Ratio and Our Mutual Friend in Denver and Upslope in Boulder. We produce the organism that ferments the sugars in beers. You can’t make beer without yeast. A lot of breweries have the equipment for creating a sugar water called wort. When you add yeast to wart, that produces beer. Without yeast, it would just be sugar water.

I worked in pharmaceuticals and bio fuels for seven years before starting this company. At the bio fuel company, I was in charge of yeast propagation — so I got experience in growing yeast.

SHANNA FORTIER try it was a different game. There were many different strains, rather than focusing on growing one. We formally opened Inland Island Yeast Laboratories in 2014. I don’t think I could have done this in any other city beside Denver metro. The beer world is exploding here. There are 400 breweries in Colorado and around 90 in Denver alone. Having this density of breweries close to us is a big piece of why we’ve been successful.

Can you more talk about the science in beer making?

Our slogan is, “art plus science equals beer.” I feel like brewers are like chefs. They make recipes for different brews and they are very intuitive about what hops are going to taste like and how it’s going to change if they shift the grain bill.

But as far as the science goes, that’s probably the least understood piece even among brewers. Even though it’s arguably the most important part because it’s the only way there is actual alcohol in the beer. Large breweries have a full lab so they can do everything in house. All of these little breweries that are popping up all over the place, they understand that culinary side and the recipe development side, but they don’t really have a grasp, the time or the money to have a full time guy working on the science aspect of things. So that’s where we come in. All of that biology and growing of the yeast, insuring thats it’s clean and getting it ready to produce the beer — they outsource that to us. You can brew beer and treat yeast like it’s just an ingredient, but educating the public, both general and brewers, to the science piece of it is a big reason why we’re here.

CCM journalists shine in multi-state contest Three reporters each won at least two first-place awards in SPJ event STAFF REPORT

Colorado Community Media journalists won 10 awards in a contest for daily and weekly newspapers in a four-state region.

Seven of CCM’s awards were firstplace honors in the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual Top of the Rockies contest. The awards, which recognized work published in 2018,

were presented May 3 at the Denver Press Club.

CCM reporters Alex DeWind, Jessica Gibbs and David Gilbert each won multiple first-place awards.

Entries came from Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming. Weekly and daily publications were grouped together, based on the size of the newspapers’ circulation, meaning the number of papers distributed. CCM’s winning entries were from the Elbert County News, the Golden Transcript, the Littleton Independent — each of which competed in the less-than-10,000 circulation classification — and the Highlands Ranch Herald in the 10,000-29,999 class.

The awards were presented on the heels of CCM’s 50 honors in the Colorado Press Association’s annual contest in April. The family-owned company, which publishes 18 weekly and three monthly newspapers in the Denver metro area, has won more than 150 awards over the past three years.

The Society of Professional Journalists, based in Indianapolis, is a national organization that was founded in 1909. The not-for-profit group works to “improve and protect” journalism and promote “high standards of ethical behavior,” its website states.

Here’s What You Need to Know About Appealing the Assessor’s Valuation of Your Home

By the time this column appears in print, all Colorado homeowners will have received in the mail a letter from their County Assessor declaring the “Actual Value” of their real estate holdings. I own both a commercial property (Golden Real Estate’s office) and my personal residence, so I received two letters — both with big value increases.

The letters give taxpayers until June 3rd to file an appeal of that valuation which, if successful, could lower the “Assessed Value” (explained below) against which taxes will be levied for 2019 and 2020.

Property taxes in Colorado are paid in arrears, which means that the property tax for this year isn’t payable until April 2020, and the property taxes for 2020 will be payable in 2021.

IMPORTANT: The valuation you just received in the mail is not a statement of your home’s current value. Rather, it is a statement of your home’s value as of June 30, 2018, but based on its condition as of January 1, 2019.

In other words, if your house was significantly improved between last June

30th and January 1st, the assigned value should be what your home in its new condition would have been able to sell for on June 30, 2018, based on what comparable homes did sell for prior to that date. (You may want to read these two paragraphs a few times!)

The good news is that even though your home’s value has increased since last June and will probably continue to rise for the next year or two, you will pay property taxes for both this year and next based on what it might have sold for in June 2018.

Nevertheless, many of us will be shocked at how much the assessor claims that our homes have increased in value.

Additional good news for homeowners is that, because of both TABOR and the Gallagher Amendment — too complicated for me to explain here — the percentage of “Actual Value” against which your local mill levy will be applied, keeps going down—from 21% of actual value in 1982 to 7.15% today. That percentage creates the “Assessed Value.”

To keep it simple, here’s an example

using round numbers. If the assessor said the market value of your home back in 2016 was $500,000, your “Assessed Value” was 7.96% of that, which equaled $39,800. If your mill levy was 100, then your tax bill was $3,980 (100 x 39.8).

Let’s say your home’s “Actual Value” as of last June 30 rose to $600,000, a 20% increase. Your new “Assessed Value” is 7.15% of that, or $42,900. Thus, your tax bill, at 100 mills, will be $4,290, a 7.8% increase in your property taxes despite a 20% increase in market value. That’s only $90 more than if your home was worth $200,000 in 1982 when the assessment rate was 21%!

And it gets even better, thanks to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR). Unless your tax district voted to “de-Bruce,” it must lower its mill levy as much as necessary to keep its revenue from increasing beyond TABOR limits which are based on population growth plus any increase in the cost of living.

Since your property taxes are the sum of many different mill levies from many jurisdictions, only some of which may have de-Bruced, that hypothetical rate of 100 mills that I used above might actually be lower this year, further reducing your property tax bill.

To guide Jeffco homeowners through the appeal process, I created a website which I hope you will find helpful, www.

HowtoAppealValuations.info. For now, let me offer you some basic advice.

1) You can appeal the assessor’s valuation only by citing eligible sales of comparable homes during the 24 months prior to June 30, 2018. Unless your home was mischaracterized (such as wrong neighborhood or style), all eligible comps are listed under the “Sales” tab on the assessor’s web page for your home, so don’t bother looking on the MLS or elsewhere.

2) You can’t use the actual sale price of a comp, because it must be “aged” based on inflation to what it would have sold for on June 30, 2018. This year, for the first time, the assessor’s website provides that calculation for every eligible sale.

To find your home on the assessor’s website, visit http://assessor.jeffco.us and click on “Property Records Search” in the lower middle of the screen, then click on “Address” on the left of the screen. “Sales” is on the top center. This is all explained on that website that I created (HowtoAppealValuations.info).

More than just limbs given at annual prosthetic clinic

Donna Thornburg has one goal.

“I want to run more than anything in my life,” Donna Thornburg said as she completed an agility drill.

She was among more than a dozen people at Stermole Track & Field Complex on Sunday working on regaining functional movement during the seventh annual Colorado Adaptive Mobility Clinic. They moved laterally, crossing one foot in front of the other.

They pushed their knees up high as they moved forward. They also skipped.

“Skipping just a minute ago was the closest I’ve come to running and I can’t tell you how that felt — it almost made me cry,” Thornburg said.

Thornburg who lives in Westminster, was parked at a car wash repositioning some tables that had slid in the back while driving before having her vehicle cleaned when another car slammed into hers — pinning her between them. Both knees were crushed, her left against the bumper and her right against the tow hitch.

That was 14 years ago. Two years ago, after about 20 surgeries including five knee replacements, she told doctors to take the leg off. Then she got cancer.

This past Sunday, May 5, was part of her first-time physical therapy.

She wasn’t alone.

About two and a half years ago he got a blood clot behind his knee. Then another. Then another. Each time with more complications.

“That totally knocked me down for quite some time,” Holzer said.

His leg was removed last October.

Sunday’s clinic was hosted by Hanger Clinic and UC Health, where Hanger Clinic collaborates with doctors and nurses.

Jill Shragal, who works with amputees at the Anschutz campus, said it’s a multidisciplinary one-stop shop.

“It allows the patient to be seen in a team environment instead of going to this doctor, then going to that doctor and different appointments at different times,” said Brad Intrus, prosthetist for Hanger.

Shragal added, “Lots of ideas bouncing off and problem solving.”

She said they will see five to seven patients per week.

Common causes for amputation are traumatic event, vascular disease, cancer and diabetes, according to Shragal.

Traci Miller of Littleton had a rare vascular disorder that began affecting her at age 10. In 1986, after two dozen surgeries, she had her leg amputated at the age of 21. Saying she had been active in the past tense would be inaccurate. Miller runs, skis and wakesurfs among other athletic activities.

She’s excited about her waterproof prosthetic to use it while jet skiing and windsurfing. She said the clinic is helpful.

“They teach the skills that really are normal because it’s not normal running skills, so learning how to bound off the thigh and what your other leg has to do to follow through,” Miller said.

At the end of the day, Thornburg and Holzer got fitted with running blades -- a prosthetic much more conducive to running than a traditional foot.

“I like the spring in my step,” Holzer said after his first run on the blade.

“That was the first time I ran in two years. That felt excellent. I struggled, but it still felt excellent.”

Thornburg was also excited to get a feel for the blade and hopes it’s move in the right direction. She recalled teaching her dogs to pull wagons with her children in them -- before jogging strollers were commonplace. Memories of running are vivid.

“I dream about it,” Thornburg said.

“I can run in my dreams.”

Trading in her longboard for a Lumina Young Mom given car by Arvada mechanic shop, Hope House

A young Arvada mom will find caring for her son and getting to school and work easier, thanks to a car donated by Westminster’s Lake Arbor Auto.

This is the third year the shop has donated a used car to a select young mother through Hope House, a charity that helps young mothers get an education, find work and be better parents.

“We recognize that the teen moms at Hope House need help in establishing their self-sufficiency, and a dependable vehicle is a solid component of that self-sufficiency,” said Dana TePoel, owner of Lake Arbor Auto. “We see this kind of donation as a recipe for success when it’s in the hands of a responsible young woman.”

TePoel and his company donated a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina with 75,000 to Lexus Flanery, 20, and her three-yearold son Nathaniel outside the shop May 2.

TePoel said the car was donated to the shop by a customer that had already made more than $4,000 in

Lake Arbor Auto also plans to provide a year’s worth of preventative maintenance service at no charge. It’s the third year the shop has donated a car to Hope House mom, in honor of Mothers Day. Hope House Family Advocate Kelsey Shelander said the group selected Flanery because of her hard work.

Three-year-old Nathanial and his mom Lexus Flanery get familiar with their new car, a 1999 Chevy Lumina that was donated by Westminster’s Lake Arbor Automotive May 2. Flanery, who is working with Hope House to continue her education and become a better parent, was given the car as a reward for hard work.

The group is currently helping more than 200 young mothers find better circumstances.

“She has been busting her butt, getting her GED, riding a longboard to classes because she didn’t have a car,” Shelander said. “She longboards to work and maintained her job the

entire time. She’s extremely respectful and hard working for as young as she is.”

Flanery just completed her GED and hopes to continue her education, ultimately working in the health field, as a veterinarian technician or in make up fields.

Each year, the club takes nominations from the community, with the requirement being that the organization operates or serves Jefferson County.

The nominees are then contacted and asked to submit an essay that highlights its ethical practices. Colorado School of Mines ethics students evaluate the submissions and follow a criterion for the final selection of the winner.

As the end of the school year quickly approaches, some families face the fear of how they will feed their children. Often times, children receive two meals a day from school, but once the school year ends so too do those meals.

Enter Jeffco Eats, a nonprofit organization that feeds 400 children a week. It also won a Lakewood Mayor’s Inspiration Award for the work it has done in the community. The nonprofit organization, which serves Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Edgewater and Arvada, is participating in Jeffco Public School’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a program that provides free nutritious meals to children 18 years and younger during the summer.

Trucker faces 40 charges in deadly I-70 crash Four deaths, multiple injuries lead to dozens of counts

There will be other means by which hopefully we can determine whether or not the brakes were the cause of the accident,” said Weir.

Safety records also revealed that the trucking company has had two driver violations for not being able to read or speak English enough to respond to official inquires and for not being able to understand highway traffic signs and signals.

The trucking company did not respond to numerous requests for comment.

It is uncertain whether AguileraMederos was one of the drivers cited for not knowing English well enough to read highway signs, or if his truck had been one of those with a recent brake problem.

Weir confirmed that a translator was present during interviews with Aguilera-Mederos. A translator was also sitting with Aguilera-Mederos while he was being advised of his charges.

Jeffco honors 10 unsung heroes Good News Breakfast highlights those that make a positive impact

Jefferson County sought out the unsung heroes that don’t wear capes for this year’s Good News Breakfast.

This year, there were 42 nominations and 10 honorees that were recognized at the 29th annual Good News Breakfast, which took place on April 30 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The Good News Breakfast got its start back in 1989 to highlight the do-gooders in the community during a time when too much negative news took over the headlines. Since then, the annual breakfast event honors those who make a positive impact on the greater Jefferson County community.

Entering the Good News Breakfast Hall of Fame this year is Felix Cook.

Following a career as director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Technical Service Center, the now retired Cook has served on numerous state boards and currently serves on the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Advisory Board, as well as other community organizations.

Graduating seniors in the Colorado Community Media coverage area are among those named 2019 Boettcher Foundation Scholars, according to a news release from the foundation.

“The Boettcher Foundation invests in the promise of Colorado and the potential of Coloradans, and these students represent the very best of our state,” Katie Kramer, president and CEO of the Boettcher Foundation, said in the release. “We are delighted that they have committed to attending Colorado universities.”

Established in 1952, the Boettcher Scholarship program annually awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Colorado. The four-year scholarship includes virtually all expenses to attend the Colorado school of the recipient’s choice: full tuition, fees, a book allowance and an annual stipend for living expenses.

The scholarship also includes programming and support to ensure

that students reach their full leadership potential. Scholars are selected based on academics, service, leadership and character, and the Boettcher Scholar network includes more than 2,500 leaders who have gone on to make their marks in business, government, nonprofits, academia and other endeavors.

Riot at youth detention facility in Golden Four youths and 10 staff injured

Golden Police continues its investigation into the riot that broke out at the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center in Golden on May 1.

Police were dispatched to the facility just before 6 p.m. on reports of a riot.

Golden’s Deputy Chief Joe Harvey said police are still not sure why the riot started, but added that initial reports indicate that one of the juveniles “chest-bumped” a guard, who attempted to control the juvenile “and it quickly grew” from that.

The incident occurred in the housing unit called Cedar Lodge. All other housing units in the facility were put on lockdown. Harvey’s best guess is that the riot itself lasted a few minutes and it took an additional few minutes for the facility to go on lockdown.

“They did a good job, under the circumstances, with getting it under control quickly,” Harvey said.

According to the Golden Police Department, eight juveniles — all 17 years old — and 19 staff members were involved in the riot. Four juveniles and 10 staff members were injured. Of the staffers, none of the

He has the word “King” tattooed on his right hand, and on his right arm he has a tattoo of roses and his last name “Dominguez.” He is a violent sex offender with gang affiliations, and is also charged with witness victim intimidation. He has relatives in Denver.

A riot at the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center, 2901 Ford St. in Golden, on May 1 involved eight juveniles and 19 staff members.

Three of them were released by midnight, Harvey said.

The two juveniles believed to have been the instigators of the riot had not cooperated with police questioning as of about noon on May 2. Police have not yet received permission to interview the other juveniles involved.

Names of the juveniles likely will

not be released, Harvey said, because they are minors and are in custody.

However, criminal charges could potentially be filed, should probable cause be found, Harvey said.

Golden Police are receiving assistance from investigators with the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office for the investigation. Additional interviews with the facility’s staff mem-

Changes to proposed budget will promote teacher training, campus safety School district to alter budget before June 6 adoption

On May 2, district leaders presented an overview of the proposed budget to the Board of Education, recommending revisions that prompted a nearly two-hour discussion among board members.

The overview showed a change in total state revenue compared to previous assumptions, which reflected policy changes made at the state level. The state will provide an additional $2 million to support Tier B students, who are students with a range of disabilities, and $15.2 million to fund full day attendance for kindergarten students.

These revisions adjusted additional state revenue assumptions to $32.8 million and total expenditures to $41.2 million.

Not reflected in the total revenues are funds received in 2019 due to the passage of Measure 5A, a mill levy override, said chief financial officer Kathleen Askelson.

Those funds were expressed as revenue in a previous budget, but a portion of the sum has been saved to go toward expenses in the 2019-

Pending negotiations In the coming weeks, the board will decide how much money to utilize for compensation, Askelson said, and in which ways to allocate those funds. She added that the board has made an effort to compensate district staff members every year to recognize those employees’ value to the district.

In the time preceding the board’s discussion, teachers, staff members and parents showed up to speak to the board regarding compensation.

“You tell me that you value your employees, but your budget doesn’t reflect that,” said Nancy McCanless, a member of the Jeffco Education Support Professionals Association (JESPA).

She explained her concerns that, for employees who are not new to the district, salaries will not increase comparably to the increase in the cost of living.

“You have just told long-term employees that we are not worth a raise,” she said.

Because negotiations between the board and the union are ongoing, the board did not discuss specifics around compensation during the May 2 meeting.

Final additions The board expressed approval for several other changes to the budget, which will program previously unassigned revenues of roughly $4 million toward different action items.

Included on this list was an additional $1.6 million toward the district’s insurance premiums, which have been on the rise, Askelson said.

The board also approved the allocation of about $660,000 to continue programs geared toward students who are at risk for dropping out.

Additional funds will be used to hire transition coordinators to work with at-risk transfer students.

The budget will also designate thousands for professional development; $30,000 will go to providing guidance for low-performing employees and another $30,000 will go to professional training for promoting family engagement in the district.

Though board member Brad Rupert initially expressed doubts about funding this training, he ultimately decided to side with the majority of his colleagues and approve the request.

“I’d like to have more confidence in the likely effectiveness of it,” he said, however, “it is about making [family engagement] consistent across the system. I’m hard-pressed to allow myself to complain about the lack of consistency if I’m not willing to invest a few dollars.”

“I also think we could fund it and say ‘come back to us next year and convince us of its worth,’” board member Amanda Stevens said.

The board went on to approve a $309,232 allocation toward what is known as Educator Pathways to Transform the Task.

The plan will provide professional support and education for staff, especially for first-year teachers. District staff reported that this group feels under-supported in terms of learning how to promote the success of their students.

The money would partially fund opportunities for teachers to learn from their coworkers and incorporate their learnings into the classroom. The district aims to use the plan to enhance student performance throughout the district, especially in middle schools.

“This is not the first year that we have known that there’s a need to improve student growth in middle school,” Stevens said.

Further discussion was prompted by a $236,626 allocation that would preserve full-time equivalent campus security positions, which schools would likely be unable to fund through their individual budgets, Askelson said.

Stevens stressed that, while funding the request would mean allocating less funds toward other priorities than she would prefer, “that is not important enough for me to say no to a safety and security request,” she said.

“I don’t want to see cuts to the current services that exist in our schools,” she said.

The board unanimously approved the request.

District leaders will present a final proposed budget to the board for adoption at its June 6 meeting.

Coinciding with its 25th anniversary, D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School has been ranked the best high school in the state of Colorado

by U.S. News and World Report. It was ranked the third best in the state in 2018.

The publication puts out state and national rankings every year. Nationwide, D’Evelyn was ranked 131st.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by the US News & World Report as the top high school in Colorado,” said Josh Griffin, D’Evelyn’s principal in a statement. “This distinction is a great reflection of the timeless value of a liberal arts education, and speaks very highly

of the hard work and dedication of the D’Evelyn students, the skill and commitment of D’Evelyn teachers, and the great support of the D’Evelyn families.”

The annual rankings, which include charter and traditional institutions, ranked 475 schools across the state, using six categories for comparison, including graduation rates, college readiness and state assessment test scores.

All 33 of Jefferson County Public School District’s 33 high schools were evaluated. District schools Lakewood High school (29), Ralston Valley (30), Green Mountain(51), Golden (55) and Arvada West (76) were among the best ranked in the area.

This year, kindergarten through eighth graders wrote about their ideas for inventions, combining STEM and literary skills; and high schoolers wrote about the concept of crossing borders — social, economic, political, geographical, philosophical or metaphysical.

Real-life wisdom from fantastic sources

I

find that there are two kinds of people in the world…

Doesn’t it seem like that’s always a prelude to some smarmy theory some person who has a very high opinion of their own intellect wants to put HITTING forward?

HOME That said, I don’t think it’s a big stretch to say there are people in the world who hold a deep dislike — even contempt — for fantasy and science fiction. You know the type: they’re the ones who joyfully post on Facebook that Michael Alcorn they’ve never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones.

And there’s really nothing wrong or

unusual about those people; in fact, I’m married to one of them. Me? I share C.S. Lewis’ opinion that the realm of fantasy is the perfect venue to examine the wonders and foibles of humanity.

To that end, I’m going to use this week’s column to share my 10 favorite pieces of wisdom that come from science fiction and fantasy.

10. Black Widow: “You better sit this one out, Captain. These guys come from legend. They’re basically gods.”

Captain America: “There’s only one God, ma’am. And I’m pretty sure he doesn’t dress like that.” From ‘The Avengers.’

It’s not that it’s necessarily Solomonesque, but it’s funny, and I appreciate anything that comes from Hollywood these days that has a character with a fairly clear idea about the world.

O LETTER TO THE EDITOR Taking some of the scare out of med bills Halloween 2017 was a scary time for me and not just for the usual spooky reasons. I went to the ER with an ovarian cyst 5cm wide. The cyst had me writhing in pain that was only mildly dulled by painkillers, and--after multiple ultrasounds and a battery of tests-I was told there was nothing more they could do for me. It is only now, 18 months later, that this costly hospital visit is paid off.

My state senator, Jessie Danielson, co-sponsored HB 19-1001, which makes hospital pricing more transparent to patients seeking to make informed choices about their healthcare. Had I known the pricing of each procedure upfront, I might have made different decisions. Thankfully, this bill passed with bi-partisan support, and Governor Polis signed it into law in March, ensuring others like me will have more choice and information.

The biggest killer of success is complacency

ver the next three weeks we will cover three topics of things we do, intentionally or unintentionally, that create barriers to our success or kill the success we have already achieved. Complacency. There is a huge difference between being comfortable and in cruise-control mode versus being stuck in our comfort zones and becoming complacent. Complacency rarely if ever leads to success; as a matter of fact, complacency has been identified as an absolute killer of success.

A variously attributed quote says

it best: “Even if we are on the right track, we will eventually get run over if we just stand there.”

When I speak with others about complacency, I hear words like “settled,” “tolerant” and “tired.”

Complacency has crept in because they feel like they have given up the fight or have lost their passion, settling for where they are and what they have instead of pushing through and pursuing their dreams.

Complacency grabs hold of us as we become tolerant of the unacceptable actions and the underachievement of ourselves and others around us.

When we tolerate mediocrity in others, pretty soon we begin to tolerate our own mediocrity. And lastly, as we fight the good fight, do everything right, getting caught up in the rush and crush of life, we get tired, lose our energy, and our passions and zest for life are replaced with complacent behaviors, or actually non-behaviors.

So, what’s the fix? How do we break through our comfort zones to get back in the game?

New laws affect voting in Jeffco

hen I was sworn in as Jefferson County’s Clerk and Recorder four months ago, I outlined a vision of a 21st century office that delivers accessible, efficient, and transparent service for you – our constituents. We’ve been working every day across all of our divisions – from the DMV to real estate filings – to deliver on that promise, and we’ll be sharing updates in the coming months. But in the meantime, since Colorado’s legislative session wrapped up last Friday, I want to highlight several bills that are about to become laws, and that I am very excited about because they will help us achieve our ambitious vision in the elections division of our office.

First up is the Colorado Votes Act. I am proud to have worked with the sponsors and proponents of Colorado’s House Bill 1278 to help shape

First, we always need to keep our goals and dreams right in front of us and review them often. Create vision boards and visual reminds of what we are most passionate about directly in our line of sight. Second, follow the advice we see on T-shirts, coffee mugs, and plastered all over social media, “Never Settle.” We need to know what it is we want and why we want it. And then never ever settle for less.

Then its time to become intolerant of being tolerant. We need to define and establish our boundaries of what we will continue to tolerate in our lives that might be leading to our complacency and away from our biggest goals and dreams. We can make a list of the things we realize we are tolerating and then make a conscious decision to just stop. We can make the choice to not accept anything less than we expect of ourselves, and we will not make, accept, or tolerate excuses.

If the biggest contributor to our complacency is just being flat-out tired and exhausted, we need to do what is in

a measure that will enhance election accessibility and efficiency statewide, while benefiting Jeffco more than any other county in Colorado. In addition to several other improvements, the bill provides funding for us to expand George Stern the use of Voter Service and Polling Centers (VSPCs) and 24-hour drop boxes. Our team has rigorously analyzed elections data to determine where additional voting sites and drop boxes are needed, and thanks to this bill, we will be able to add six new VSPCs and 16 new drop boxes by next year’s presidential election.

That last change will more than double the number of 24-hour loca-

tions where Jeffco voters can drop off their ballots during the threeweek election period.

Another victory for accessibility and efficiency is Senate Bill 235 – Automatic Voter Registration. This bill automatically registers to vote every eligible citizen when they interact with a number of different government offices. Say you move to Lakewood, you’ve worried about finding a home, unpacking, registering the kids for school, figuring out where the closest grocery store is, and you even made it to the driver’s license office to get a new ID. You might have assumed – as many do – that that last step would also register you to vote so you wouldn’t have to reach out to yet another government entity to make sure your ballot arrives where it’s supposed to – and on time. Unfortunately, that wasn’t true before. But it is now: No need

to stress about another item; you’ll be registered automatically, and your ballot will show up in the mail!

There are two other bills that will improve accessibility for specific populations in our county. Senate Bill 202, which was sponsored by my fellow Jeffco elected officials state Senators Jessie Danielson and Rachel Zenzinger, uses technology to improve the voting process for people with disabilities. It passed both legislative chambers unanimously. House Bill 1266, which also passed with bi-partisan support in both chambers, restores the right to vote for citizens who are on parole, re-enfranchising thousands of Jeffco voters.

our own best interest and get the rest we need. Proper rest and proper sleep can immediately reignite our fire and desire as we feel better and healthier.

When we feel tired, we need to eliminate or minimize all the things we are doing that drain us of energy and focus our time on the tasks and projects and people that light us up, fire us up, and give us energy.

Show me a settled person, a person who has accepts and tolerates mediocrity, and a tired person and I will show you someone who is allowing complacency to kill their desire to succeed instead of working on their dreams.

Jackie Greene balances creative impulses at Denver shows

yard may not be easy or inexpensive. Using a phased-in approach, Denwood said, is the easiest way to work toward a waterwise yard. That begins by replacing certain plants with water-conserving ones, identifying which spots of the yard rarely get foot traffic and developing a plan for what you want your lawn to look like.

“It can be costly, but it depends on how you go about and do it,” Denwood said. “I recommend folks start with a plan and then they can implement their plan in phases over several years and that works really well for folks who are unable to make that upfront cost for the whole thing.”

To many new Front Range residents coming from places with more average rainfall than Colorado, having anything but a green lawn can seem strange. In Denver, the average rainfall is about 15.4 inches, which is almost half the national average.

Ruth Quade, a water conservation coordinator in Greeley, said Kentucky bluegrass is a common choice for contractors because it is droughtresilient and easy to put down and maintain. Water, meanwhile, is used in excess to keep it green.

Quade said one square foot of turf requires about 18 to 20 gallons of water per year. Xeriscaping yards, Quade said, can reduce that by almost half.

“Adapting your landscape to mimic more of nature, you’re going to use less water and you’re not going to have to supply from above,” Quade said.

here’s no exact science to making a live show or album great. But as California’s Jackie Greene has been performing a blend of folk, rock and Americana since he was a teenager, he’s figured out the answer for himself.

“Spirit and intensity — that’s what I like,” Greene explained over the phone from a studio in Oakland. “They COMING be abstract ATTRACTIONS might ideas, but people can feel them. It’s not about the notes, it’s never about the notes.”

Greene has been crafting that very spirit and intensity on countless stages with musicians ranging from the Clarke Reader Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh and Bob Weir to the Black Crowes and more over the years. He recently released his first proper live album, “Live from Town Hall,” after nine studio releases and will be stopping at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox, 1215 20th St. in Denver, at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11. He’ll also be opening for Blues Traveler at their annual Fourth of July show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 18300 W. Alameda Parkway.

The Ophelia’s performances will be an acoustic outing with guitarist Nathan Dale, providing a needed balance to the full band shows he’s done during his most recent tour.

“These are a different kind of show — almost like VH1 Storytellers. It’s more laid back and provides me an opportunity to dig deep … it’s almost a campfire vibe,” Green said. “It’s about finding a healthy balance of being a sideman versus being an acoustic singer/songwriter. I don’t think I could be happy if I could only do one.”

A lot has changed for Greene, both musically and as a songwriter, since he released his first album in 2002. Recording at home and on the road has become easier and technology has drastically altered the way music is shared and distributed. Most importantly, he’s now the father of a 14-month-old daughter, and that’s changed the way he sees, well, everything.

“If that’s not a miracle, I don’t know what is. My entire perspective is different now,” Greene said.

Why xeriscaping is crucial to Coloradans, and how to start

ndie Wommack, a horticulture agent for the Colorado State University Extension office in Douglas County, said the most fundamental misconception people have with waterconserving landscaping is in the wording.

“Xeriscaping does not mean ‘zeroscaping.’ There’s a misconception or tag with xeriscaping that it needs to be all rocks and cactus,” Wommack said, “and that’s not really what xeriscaping is.”

For a word coined in Colorado, many residents are still unclear what it means to xeriscape (ze-ri-scape) a yard.

Dianna Denwood, a senior water conservation specialist with Colorado WaterWise, a water conservation resource group, said the state introduced the term “waterwise” to rethink what it means to be conscientious about water use in a landscape.

According to Colorado WaterWise, 50 percent of a Western United States residents’ water usage goes toward landscaping. Xeriscaping a yard, Colorado WaterWise reported, can reduce water usage by up to 60 percent and, if done right, increase home values by up to 15 percent.

“I basically am asking folks to change their understanding of what their yard should look like and put

aside their current notions of what xeriscaping is. A lot of people have this misconception that it is rocks and cactus, but it doesn’t have to be,” Denwood said. “You can have a green, lush landscape with not a single blade of Kentucky bluegrass. It’s changing the mindset and knowing what’s possible.”

Xeriscaping is a style of landscaping that significantly reduces water usage. The style is popular in particularly dry regions, like Colorado, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. Some xeriscaped yards go all the way to zero water usage, while others limit the amount of water needed. Common features of xeriscaped yards include native plants or plants that require little water, various rock formations and creative use of space to eliminate the need for a costly, green yard.

Kentucky bluegrass, the most commonly used grass in Colorado lawns, has one of the lowest water-needs of any grass. It’s managing the irrigation based on location, timing and use that can make all the difference.

“We never want to tell someone they can’t have Kentucky bluegrass.

We do encourage them to think about keeping their bluegrass only where they really need it,” Denwood said.

“We love Kentucky bluegrass because it’s green most of the year and it can handle high foot traffic … If there’s an area you’re not using grass that heavily, that’s the perfect area to transition to waterwise landscaping.”

Wommack said you can have plants that require high water use in a xeriscaped yard, so long as they’re close together to conserve water. Grouping native plants and low-water-use plants together can help, but managing the irrigation system, Wommack said, is also key.

“The goal of xeriscaping is to group plants together in ‘hydro zones’ — plants with the same water needs in the same areas,” Wommack said. “That way you’re watering each area appropriately.”

For help to start xeriscaping your yard, the experts recommend people reach out to local water utility groups or conservation offices.

Colorado’s water problem Despite one of Colorado’s snowiest winters in recent memory, Wommack said it’s still not enough to pull almost half the state from severe or exceptional draught come the summer months.

“We have had some pretty bad droughts here in the last couple of years, which is hard for people to

More trucks, more beer, more food at Northglenn carnival Food trucks return for fourth annual festival of food

“Last year we did a brew festival on Saturday and it was very successful — but just for a few hours,” said Steven Stokes, event supervisor for the city of Northglenn. “People clearly wanted those microbrews, so we have seven brewers coming this year and a distillery pouring all of our mixed drinks throughout the whole weekend.

So that’s significantly more than we offered last year.”

The Food Truck Carnival, Northglenn’s signature spring event, returns May 10 through 12 to Northglenn City Hall, featuring more trucks than ever, more varieties of food, music and carnival rides.

This year’s event features 91 food trucks confirmed, with fare ranging from asian fare to barbecue and seafood and from desserts to pizza, burgers and breakfast foods.

“There’s more of everything, more trucks, more food, and different rides,” Stokes said.

Organizers of Northglenn’s Food Truck Carnival, set for May 10-12, say the event should be bigger in 2019, with more than 91 different food vendors coming over the weekend.

“It’s super fun, a good way to relieve a little stress,” Stokes said.

The event is free to attend but food is purchased from the vendors. Carnival rides cost between $3 and $6 each but carnival wristbands cost $30 per day — $25 with a coupon printed from the festival’s website, www.foodtruckcarnival.com.

This year’s festival will also feature an ice carving contest at 4 p.m. Sat-

urday in honor of Northglenn’s 50th anniversary.

“Two carvers will go head-to-head,” Stokes said. “One is carving a trout, the other a swan. Both are things you can see find on Webster Lake at certain times of the year.”

Parking Organizers suggest carnival attendees park on the east side of I-25 and south of 120th Avenue at the Wagon Road Park-n-Ride. A pedestrian underpass connects to the Northglenn city complex and the park, with an eight minute walk.

Super summer outdoor activities for children abound

ith the public school year winding down you may be one of those parents searching for summer activities and educational opportunities for their kids? It’s a good time to look outdoors! Along Front Range Colorado, the summer season is the outdoors season. And the pathway to youth and family outdoors adventures is limitless, readily close to all of us right here in the greater Denver Metro region.

There are a number of convenient, natural environments welcoming you a reasonably close drive from our nearby cities. One is the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (RMANWR), near Commerce City; the other is the Barr Lake State Park and Nature center (BLSP), east of Brighton. Both are professionally staffed and provide exciting and unique nature tours, outdoors classes, learning experiences and wildlife and bird observation viewing for all ages, family members and community organizations.

A few suggested RMANWR summer activities would include morning wildlife viewing tours May 11 and June 22. Participants will enjoy the comfort of the Refuge bus with an onboard biologist guide. The number of mammals and birds visible on the tour are amazing on this 17,000 acre Refuge and the spring season is their best viewing time.

Another popular event is the Kids Fishing Clinic set for June 15, which is hosted by experienced anglers from other outdoors organizations. Kids 6-12 will come away with basic skills to enjoy fishing in other Colorado waters. This Refuge is proud of its research and success in the recovery of the black-foot-

ed ferrets. Both May 18 and June 1 a Refuge naturalist will explain what caused the disappearance of this colorful little critter and how the refuge staff attends to its basic, daily needs while supporting the animal’s self-reliance and population growth. Other learning classes include The Incredible Insects that exposes kids to the smallest of life forms and how they serve the natural world. There are more than 20 additional programs available and many at differing date and times.

The RMANWR staff manages the new Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge located west of Standley Lake in Jefferson County.

The newest of Colorado Refuges has 10.3 miles of trail open for hiking, biking and horseback riding on its 5,000 acres of rolling hills and stream basins. Mule deer and elk, plus coyotes and other small mammals occupy this Refuge as well. For people or close to Arvada, Two Ponds NWR is a natural beauty of land, water and trails. Visitors can see 120 species of birds on its 72 acres of close in urban land.

The Barr Lake complex, BLSP and Nature Center is a busy exploratory ground during the summer months. A very popular event, not to miss is the Eagle Express van which explores the bald eagle nests, cormorant Rookery and miles of natural habitat that houses a vast assortment of other ground animals and bird species. A very unique and intriguing evening event is the Full Moon Hikes that will put kids and families in the midst of nature’s evening hours to hear and witness nocturnal animal and bird activity.

Another interesting event and one unique to Barr Lake is an on lake tour of the Park on

the Sunset Pontoon Boat Tours. A Park naturalist will share the history of Barr Lake, the surrounding agriculture operations, boat safety, evening fish habits and maybe even catch a view an owl, hawk or eagle dipping to lakes surface in pursuit of a fish dinner meal.

Birders will find a unique opportunity to meet other bird enthusiast as the new Barr Lake Birders Club discusses the growing list of local bird species and identify new species as they take flight after sunset. Friday Night Campfire Tales grasps the attention of kids and families as good stories are shared, sing-a-longs and marshmallows are roasted around the campfires. Young toddlers and parents will enjoy Toddler Story Time in June as stores about nature and wildlife are shared by Rangers on the first Thursday of every month. July 20th is the popular Go to kids’ night out at the Drive in Movie for kids.

Everyone is encouraged to bring make-shift box cars to the park to watch the hilarious kid’s movie Lilo and Stitch.

Other details: Tutors do not need to speak the student’s language. Most participants are homebound women and small children, adults who are disabled, and senior citizens.

Many are not literate in their first language, and remain isolated from American culture.

JEFFERSON COUNTY — The latest National Letter of Intent signing period has pushed the number of Jeffco student-athletes continuing at the next level to well over 200.

Several Jeffco high schools across the district has had signing celebrations since the final signing date period of the coming 2019-2020 academic school year began on April 17.

The final signing date for Division I basketball programs wraps up May 15 and the last signing day for Division II football programs is August 1.

LITTLETON — Ralston Valley senior Calvin Hunt was a one-man wrecking crew on the baseball diamond May 2 at Dakota Ridge High School.

Hunt pitched six innings, giving up just two runs on three hits. He also helped himself out at the plate with a solo home run in the second inning and capped off Ralston Valley’s 8-2 win over Dakota Ridge with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

“I could always hit for power, but I couldn’t hit it consistently,” said Hunt, who had just five plate appearances last season. “Lately I’ve been working on seeing it and putting a good swing on it.

Otto Jones has really helped me out a lot with getting my hands through the baseball.

Coach (Terry) Hensley is a great hitting coach. They have really progressed me to be a pretty good hitter.”

Hunt finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate with a

hit-by-pitch and walk to go along with the two home runs.

Ralston Valley coach Brad Madden also liked what he saw from the mound from the Mustangs’ ace. Hunt im-

proved his pitching record to 4-1 on the season and holds a 3.17 ERA. “He (Hunt) did a great job,” Madden said. “He was around the zone all day and throwing

both pitches for strikes. When he does that he is tough to beat.”

Dakota Ridge senior Zach Parker doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. The only other run came when Stohr walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.

“He (Hunt) did a great job with all of his pitches,” said Jones, the Mustangs’ catcher.

“Then he swung the bat great too.”

Ralston Valley’s offense really got it going in the fourth inning putting up four runs.

Seniors Jude Martinez, Jones and Trey Adams all drove in runs to give Hunt a five-run cushion.

Martinez relieved Hunt on the mound in the bottom of the seventh inning after Hunt extended the lead to 8-2 with his two-run blast. After a leadoff single by Parker, Martinez got a fly out and line-drive back to the pitcher turned into a double-play to end the game.

“This was a good show of who they are,” Madden said.

Ralston Valley suffered a 7-4 loss to the Chargers on May 1. Heading into May 2 games Chatfield, Columbine, Dakota Ridge and Ralston Valley were all tied atop the conference with 4-1 league records.

Columbine (9-9, 6-2 in 5A Jeffco) won its sixth straight game May 2 with a dominating 12-1 win over rival Chatfield. Ralston Valley (12-7, 6-1) held a one-game heading into the final week of the regular season.

“It’s just a sprint with only eight (league) games in a good league,” Madden said. “We just want to keep getting better. If we do that things will fall like they should.”

Conference play wraps up Tuesday, May 7, to determine the league champ

and lone automatic bid to the 5A postseason. The eight league champions in 5A are protected and the remainder of the 32-team field is determined

by RPI standings.

The 5A Jeffco League will have round-robin games Saturday, May 11, to fill out their regular-season schedule. The teams 1-3, 4-6 and 7-9 will play at the highest seed site on May 11 with each team getting in two games that will be non-league games.

“The most important games of the year are doubleheaders in the regionals and we don’t play doubleheaders all year long,” Madden said of the round-robin formate to close the regular season on May 11. “It will give everyone the feel of playing two games in one day and how to prepare your body. Creating paper glass Chihuly art

W

henever it is too a cold, too wet to play outside or children are sick, grandparents can take out a few art supplies and try a new easy craft. It’s always good to be prepared. This craft is based on the famous contemporary glass lamps and sculptures of Dale Chihuly found in beautiful buildings around the world.

You will need some coffee filters, nonpermanent markers, spray starch, a yogurt container or plastic cup about the size of the middle of a coffee filter and battery-operated tea lights.

The spotted glass they will make can be used for dishes or a candle holder with a little nonflammable light in the middle.

Paper glass To make the paper glass, cut around a coffee filter edge to make it scalloped or slightly uneven in no particular pattern. Flatten out the filter and make a series of rows of scribbles like short, tightly-closed tents with different colors. Children should make each color about half-an-inch-wide before starting another color around the filter. They can also make different colored dots. Looking at the images of the Chilhuly glass will help get

across the idea that one color is going to bleed into the other. Blue next to yellow will bleed into green. Red next to blue will bleed into purple. If children want to stick to primary colors, leave a large space between them. Children can make each filter different or make a set that look the same.

Once children have made jagged lines, spots and blobs, drape the coffee filter over an upside down plastic cup or individual yogurt container. Place some newspapers under the containers. Apply spray starch to the filter until the marker colors blend and the coffee filter is completely wet. Allow the filters to dry and do not touch them.

Once dry they will be translucent and mimic the look of Chihuly glass. They will be as delicate as glass but will not break. If they are gifts, place them in a box with tissue paper tucked around them. They will keep their shape if not handled too roughly. There is also a short film on Vimeo at bit.ly/chihulyvideo.

Flower bouquet Coffee filters come in handy for a variety of children’s art projects. Sprayed with starch or not they can be painted with water colors and attached with pipe cleaners for a floral bouquet. They can be flattened and placed in a window to add a stained-glass look to a child’s room.
