Wheat Ridge STEM ‘class functions like a company would’

MY NAME IS

KEVIN MIKULICH

Senior at Pomona High School and future audio engineer for the Army I love to cook and bake. Traveling is also something that gives me joy. I’m getting ready to head out to Europe once I wrap up my last year here at Pomona High School.

Growing up, my house was filled with music. My dad has been a drummer all my life, and I used to make a lot of my own music. I made pretty much any type of music. At Pomona, I play bass in the school’s jazz band.

My friends, and I went through the Rolling Stones top 500 albums, and we listened to them all. I listen to pretty much any type of genre. Being an audio engineer, it’s something that I have to do.

Life after high school I’m an audio production student at Warren Tech. Not too long ago, I flew out to Virginia to audition to be one of the U.S. Army’s touring live sound engineers. I got the position, and I’m the youngest person ever to be offered the position.

In October, I’ll head out for the Army. There are a lot of different bands in the military. I will be in charge of a unit of about 40 people.

The thing I’m most excited for is to work with really, really talented people. It was just fantastic to walk by practice rooms in Virginia and hear the music these people were making.

Students talk about building hydrogen vehicles for national competition

Wheat Ridge High School’s STEM engineering program operates more like a business than a class. Walk to the lower level of the high school, and you’ll find three classrooms dedicated to the program — a computer lab, a manufacturing lab and a conference room. Students aren’t in those rooms doing homework, or writing papers — they’re designing some of the nation’s best hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Wheat Ridge High School’s STEM engineering program competed in the Shell Eco-Marathon, a challenge to see which team can create the most efficient car that runs on hydrogen, in Sonoma, California last month against high schools and universities from North America and South America. The school came to the challenge with two hydrogen fuel cell vehicles — an urban concept vehicle complete with blinkers, headlights, windshield wipers and turn signals, as well as a prototype vehicle designed for efficiency. The prototype did well, passing all of its engineering inspections, and finishing in second place, ahead of schools like Queens University and Duke University.

The STEM aspect of the program is vital, but there’s more to it. Students were responsible for reaching out to companies for sponsorship, and a social media team operates the pro-

“This class functions like a company would. We have our bosses who we go to and report, but we are all selfmotivated,” said Ali Helton, a junior who is part of the program. “It’s all student driven. It’s our motivation, not the teachers. It’s the talking to companies, learning how to communicate with our community, things that happen in the outside world. This class prepares us for that.”

One of those “bosses” who Helton referred to is Charles Sprague, the STEM and engineering-Shell instructor. Sprague founded the program five years ago, and he’s watched it grow from 16 to over 100 students.

“There’s an awful lot of the higher end soft skills that are needed in the real world to be successful. (Students) get to do that all down here, and they’ve done a good job,” said Sprague.

Wheat Ridge High School has taken home first place awards from the Shell Eco-Marathon twice in the past.

“When you’re in a core class, you do the homework, you hand it in, then you do the test. It’s a cycle,” said Caleb Coyne, a senior in the program.

“When you take STEM, it’s that matter of meeting deadlines, and it’s trial and error. This class has built me to be more prepared for the future.”

Snowpack bonanza has water districts feeling safe North communities should avoid water restrictions for summer 2019

Metro Denver may escape water rationing and lawn irrigation restrictions again this summer, thanks to well-above average snow pack in the mountains.

Thornton Water Resource Manager Emily Hunt said the snow in

the mountains and wetter March in the Denver metro area have rescued Colorado’s potential water stores after a dry summer 2018 pushed conditions towards restrictions.

“We were on drought watch as we headed out of the summer last year,” Hunt said. “Luckily, with lower customer use and above-normal snow pack we are off of drought watch and we are not anticipating any water use restrictions this year.”

Snow pack in the northern Rockies, which feeds water to much of the Denver metro area via the South Platte River, is well above normal,

according to the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service. Snow pack feeding the South Platte is at 108 percent of the river’s annual average and 121 percent of where it was in 2018.

According to the Conservation Service, Colorado’s snow pack reached its peak on April 26.

“So it’s great that we are above average right at the time we are at our peak,” Hunt said. “We expect spring runoff to start here right at the end of April and into early May.” Thornton’s reservoirs are slightly below average for this time of year, all the better to capture that bounty

of spring runoff.

“It’s a good thing to have a big enough hole to fill,” she said. “Because the snow pack looks good, we are very confident we’ll be able to fill up our storage pretty well.”

Many Renters Are Unaware of Programs That Make Homeownership a Real Possibility Last week I wrote about the challenges facing buyers who must sell their current home in order to buy a new home and aren’t sure how to accomplish that without risking homelessness.

This week, I’m going to address the different challenges facing renters, including firsttime home buyers.

There are many programs for first-time home buyers, but many renters aren’t aware that they qualify as a first-time home buyer if they haven’t owned a home for three years. You could have owned several homes in your life, but if you haven’t owned one in the past three years, take advantage of these special programs.

A common misconception among people wanting to buy a home is that they have to save up for a 20% down payment, but that is simply not true. Another misconception is that if you put down less than 20%, you’ll be required to pay for mortgage insurance. There are conventional loans available with as little as 3% down that don’t require mortgage insurance. That contrasts with the 3.5% minimum down payment for FHA loans which do require mortgage insurance that

doesn’t go away for the life of the loan.

One of our preferred lenders, Scott Lagge of Movement Mortgage, compares the low costs of available programs to what renters pay when they lease a condo or home. Typically, renters need to come up with first and last month’s rent and a damage deposit. Some firsttime home buyer programs have out-of-pocket costs as low as $500-$1,000. Moreover, monthly mortgage payments are often on par with monthly rent payments.

When I bought my first home in Golden in 1997, I was single but I had a good friend (also renting) who agreed to rent a room with me if I found a suitable home. I found a ranch with walk-out basement that worked perfectly. He lived in the basement, I had a main-floor master suite, and he had access to my kitchen. We both saved money over renting, and I was building equity in my home. This is a formula that can work for anyone – if they have someone they’d like to have living in their basement!

(Colorado Housing & Finance Authority) that grant up to a 3% down payment through a “silent” second mortgage that accrues no interest and requires no payment and is forgiven if you keep the loan to maturity. The out-of-pocket is typically around 1% to the buyer. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have first-time homebuyer programs that provide a lower rate, lower mortgage insurance and among the lowest payments of all such programs. This does require closer to a 4% down payment from the buyer.

Scott claims that the best firsttime homebuyer program is his company’s Dream to Own Loan. This loan gives a silent second of 4% of the purchase price to be used for down payment and closing costs.

Another great option for renters is a rent-with-option-to-buy program

HomePartners.com. The way it works is that you only have to qualify to rent a home which that company then purchases so you can rent it.

They’ll pay up to $500,000 for almost any home (except a condo) that’s on the MLS once you agree to rent it at a pre-determined rental amount based on the purchase price.

You can rent the home for up to five years, knowing in advance what your rent will be for all five years, but at any time you can buy that home at a price agreed to in advance. Call us to apply for this program.

It’s also a good option when your credit isn’t good enough to buy right away but you know it will be better within five years. You can also use the program for the peace of mind that comes with knowing what you'll pay in rent for five years and that you won’t have to move.

Four killed in I-70 semi crash 28 vehicles involved in collision and ensuing fire

A major vehicle crash on eastbound I-70 near the Denver West exit resulted in multiple deaths and caused a fire that closed the freeway in both directions the afternoon of April 25 at about 4:50 p.m.

The Lakewood Police Department reported 28 vehicles, including four semi trucks, were involved in the crash, resulting in four fatalities and six injuries.

The morning of April 26, the police department said the driver of a semi that was involved in the crash, Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, 23, had been taken into Lazaro custody on suspicion of Aguilera four counts of vehicular homicide. Days later, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office named Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 24, of Denver; Doyle Harrison, 61, of Denver; Stanley Politano, 69, of Arvada; and William Bailey, 67, of Arvada, as the four people

As of the morning of April 29, Aguilera-Mederos was in the county jail with a $400,000 bond, awaiting formal charges, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

“The number one focus of the investigation is to fully investigate this crash and bring justice to these families,” said Lakewood Police Department Investigator John Romero.

chain reaction.”

An earlier traffic accident farther to the east had backed up traffic and may have contributed to the crash, according to Countryman.

The DA’s office says AguileraMederos holds a commercial driver’s license from Texas.

Countryman added that investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Mechanical issues with the truck are still being investigated as a potential cause.

“For truckers, keep control of your vehicles,” Countryman said.

“Without control it doesn’t matter if it’s a fully loaded vehicle or a hatchback, you’re still responsible.”

After the vehicles collided, fire broke out, fed by wood logs carried by one of the semi trucks, sending a dark column of smoke into the sky.

Eyewitnesses said the semi barreled down the right shoulder of the freeway to avoid some vehicles, before the crash.

West Metro Fire was one of the agencies that responded to the scene. Spokesperson Ronda Sholting said that one West Metro firefighter sustained a minor injury after a tire exploded near him. Sholting said the firefighter was at back home and recuperating the following day.

I-70 remained closed in both directions until the afternoon of April 26, when CDOT opened the westbound lanes. The eastbound lanes reopened April 27 after crews finished repaving the section of roadway most damaged by the crash and fire.

Finally, all aboard the G Line!

After three years of delays, light rail line from Wheat Ridge to Denver opens

onnie Burg has been dealing with the loud train horns from the G Line and her landscaping, she said, has been destroyed multiple times when construction vehicles rolled through her neighborhood.

But she was excited April 26 as the long-awaited 11-mile commuter rail line finally opened to the public.

“It’s a big deal,” said Burg, who lives minutes away from the Wheat Ridge Ward Station, the last stop on the route that runs from there through Arvada, Adams County and into Denver’s Union Station. “We’ve been waiting for a long time. We’ve been living with the construction for a long time. We’re excited about being able to get downtown and get to the airport.”

The G Line’s opening has been delayed since October 2016 because of problems with the timing of crossing gates, which have been solved to federal regulators’ satisfaction. The Regional Transportation District, which operates the light rail and commuter rail lines in the Denver metro area, anticipates about 9,000 passenger trips per day during the first year.

That number is expected to rise to 12,900 daily trips by 2035.

“It’s been a long time coming, but I think it’s really worth it to have (the G Line) running safely and for it to have all the checks on it,” Wheat Ridge Mayor Bud Starker said to Colorado Community Media. “It’s a great way for our citizens to not only get downtown, but go anywhere in the world.”

The commuter rail line, coated in yellow with the words “Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Downtown” on it, will give free rides until May 12. Quiet zones, sections of the railroad where trains don’t have to blare their horns, will be implemented along the entire line.

“This is so exciting to finally have this train open and having folks to be able to get around our community,” Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said. “Our visitor center is going to be working with folks so that we can get the word out in downtown Denver, at the Colorado Convention Center and elsewhere to come out to Arvada and to check out all the great things that Olde Town Arvada has to offer.”

The G Line will run from 4 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., arriving every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and every 30 minutes during off-peak hours.

The fare is $3 to ride from the Wheat Ridge station to the Union station stop.

On April 26, the official line-cutting ceremony at the Wheat Ridge station drew people decked out in shirts with the words “nothin’ but a G thing” to listen to a series of city and RTD officials.

“It’s tremendously meaningful for this to open — not just for we on the board or the staff, but for the people who have waited for it, or moved here, or started a business because of (the G Line),” said Shelley Cook, RTD board member for District L, which represents most of Arvada and the North Washington and Welby neighborhoods.

“We feel like they’re co-investors in this.”

Next school year, Arvada High is making a shift so that every classroom will be solely focused on project- or problem-based learning (PBL).

PBL is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem or challenge.

Arvada High began embracing this model of teaching in fall 2017. The method involves collaborative skills, creativity, problem solving and encourages students to take the lead.

“Instead of teachers standing up on a stage as the holder of all the information and knowledge, the teacher will be guiding and facilitating the students through hands-on learning,” said Mark Abling, assistant principal at Arvada High.

English teacher Sky Hand has been using this method in his classroom for the past two years having his students solve the question of how to colonize Mars.

“That particular problem is massive,” Hand said. “When they jump in initially, they think they have the

entire problem solved. But then questions lead to more questions.”

Hand said through this PBL it’s been interesting to see students grapple with failure and realize how hard realworld problems are. He said it also helps answer the age-old question, “Why do we learn this stuff ?”

“There’s a version of English class that’s so fixed in their brain,” Hand said. “What book are we reading?

What essay are we writing? I think taking away the boundary of a subject and putting an emphasis on skills is the way to see the task transformed.”

Arvada is able to make the schoolwide shift through a partnership with New Tech Network, an organization dedicated to transforming teaching and learning around the country through a PBL platform and professional development for teachers.

New Tech Network works with more than 200 schools throughout the country. Arvada High will be the first in Colorado.

“New Tech Network puts a modern look on how we teach kids,” Abling said. “In the real world, none of us take tests in our jobs. Everything is

The sports business pathway — the first of its kind at a high school — will include classes in sports journalism and broadcasting, sports management, sports marketing, sports medicine and coaching. The STEM pathway will include health science, computer science, engineering and STEM lab; and the arts and humanities pathway will include culinary arts, visual arts and design, pathways to teaching, journalism and performing arts.

“Learning 20 or 30 years ago does not look the same as what it looks like today because of the technology in our society,” Abling said. “Yet we still teach the same way we did 20 or 30 years ago. So we’re changing the task so our students can perform in the real world.”

Outdoor Lab Foundation donates to Jeffco schools More than $60,000 in tuition assistance given last month STAFF REPORT

For generations of sixth graders growing up in Jefferson County, the annual Outdoor Lab trip experience has become a rite of passage.

To ensure that the experience remains available to all children, no matter what their household financial situation might look like, the nonprofit Outdoor Lab Foundation has been available to offer tuition support. This year, the foundation says it gave out more than $60,000 in tuition support last month alone.

The mission of the Outdoor Lab Foundation is to inspire community support and advocate for the Outdoor Lab program. Advocating at the program’s heart includes supporting Jefferson County local schools. This year, the foundation says it sought student tuition support from outside funders, and garnered donations at “an inspiring pace.”

This year was an especially important year for the foundation to provide support — it’s the first full year that

many sixth-grade students in Jefferson County were housed in middle schools instead of elementary schools.

This challenged the middle schools to support some students’ Outdoor Lab tuition for the first time.

The following organizations supported the Outdoor Lab Foundation for 2018-2019 Outdoor Lab student tuition funding, totaling over $75,000 given out this year to local Jefferson County schools.  City of Golden, Citizens Assistance Fund: $5,000  City of Lakewood, Lakewood Legacy Foundation: $10,000  City of Wheat Ridge: $18,500  Community First Foundation: $25,000  Golden Civic Foundation: $2,250  Westminster Legacy Foundation: $5,000  Virginia W. Bag-Off competition kicks off Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive Drive will benefit four local food banks

A little-known fact about the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office is that its captains are excellent grocery baggers.

In fact, they’re good enough to have won this year’s Bag-Off competition on April 24.

The competition “is a lot of fun,” said Capt. Jimmy Lucas. But the reason the sheriff ’s office competes, he added, is because “it’s for such a worthy cause.”

The Bag-Off, in its fourth annual year, is a friendly competition among county employees, elected and appointed officials and others in county leadership roles to see who can bag groceries the fastest. The Bag-Off competition is a fun way to raise awareness of the need for food donations in Jeffco, and it serves as a kickoff event for the Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive.

“They take the competition seriously and have a lot of fun with it,” said Mallory Albi, the public affairs coordinator for Jefferson County Human Services. “But it’s really about how much we can give to the community’s families in need.”

Now in its 25th annual year, the Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive is a county-wide effort that each county office participates in to benefit local food banks. It takes place May 1-17 this year. Four local food banks will benefit from the efforts — Community Table, the Evergreen Christian Outreach, Light of the World and The Action Center.

Last year, Jeffco employees collected nearly $6,000 in monetary donations for the food banks. As for food donations, this year’s goal is to generate at least 6,000 pounds of food — an increase of 500 pounds from last year’s amount donated.

“We have so many children in Jefferson County who are on free-andreduced lunch,” said Lynnae Flora,

deputy director of Jefferson County Human Services.

Jeffco Public Schools reports that the number of students on free-andreduced lunch varies greatly by area, but the district-wide average during the 2018-19 school year was 31.2 percent of Jeffco students were on free-and-reduced lunch.

The summer months, when school is not in session, are particularly hard on these families, Flora said. The Jeffco Employee Food & Cash Drive helps the food banks provide adequate, nutritious food to Jeffco families and community members who need it most throughout the summer.

This is the first year for the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office to win the Bag-Off competition. They took

canals that feed municipal water treatment plants.

Westminster’s reservoirs were at about 83 percent capacity as April ended, according to Sarah Borgers, Westminster’s water resources and quality manager. The city entered summer 2018 with completely full reservoirs.

“That helped us out quite a lot, because it helped us get through the summer and the winter,” she said.

“Although, right now we are a little lower than we like to be. But we are confident about the snow pack and the spring runoff.”

Borges said she doesn’t expect Westminster will need water restrictions either.

“We are always cautiously optimistic, based on what we see in the mountains,” she said. “You never do know exactly what you get.”

Dry soil can soak up water before it hits the river and wind can evaporate water before it runs off, Borgers said.

“We think we’ll see plenty of water in rivers,” she said, “but don’t know exactly how weather is going to impact and if that’s going to turn into wet-water in the reservoir.”

Much of the state is enjoying similar conditions. The basin feed-

ing southeastern Colorado’s Arkansas River is currently listed at 127 percent of average and 226 percent of last year’s snow pack peak. The snow pack that will feed the San Miguel, Dolores and San Juan River basins in southern Colorado are 160 percent of average and a whopping 551 percent compared to last year.

Drought categories Hunt said she had some concerns last summer after months of warm weather and little rain pushed the city into a “moderate drought” category, formerly called a drought watch.

“We were in pretty good shape last spring but then we had a pretty good dry spell and customer usage started slipping upwards and we started forecasting what we would have in July 2019, “ she said. “And that convinced us to go on drought watch to finish the summer.”

The city asked residents to voluntarily limit outside watering and irrigation to three days per week.

Customer water use dropped in the fall, like it normally does.

Late summer conditions could still push the area into moderate drought, despite the good early spring conditions.

“But so far this April, our temperatures have been cooler and water demands have been lower,” Hunt said, “and that really helps keep our reservoirs full.”

No spoilers — but Avengers movie highlights some learned wisdom

I

had an old friend, Jim, whom I taught with for several years, who had two children—one, an older boy from his first marriage, and the second, a girl, many years later. And Jim would often joke that when all he had was the boy, nothing would make him cry; but then the girl arrived, and he would find himself in tears at “Die Hard” and “Terminator.”

I had a similar experience. When my girls arrived on the scene, it changed me. I became much more familiar with things like compassion and empathy. And not that I didn’t know those emotions before, but the visceral reality of them never struck

me. It’s never quite HITTING the same thing to HOME project emotionally into somebody else’s life as it is to project their life into your own when you are responsible for tiny humans that are like crystal shards of your own existence.

It changes you.

For instance — no spoilers! — watching Michael Alcorn the final chapter of The Avengers story arc is an extraordinary experience through the eyes of a parent. The battle scenes are

epic, as they always have been, and the movie has a great sense of humor about both itself and the whole Marvel Universe. But I was not prepared for the very strong emotional center of the movie, the heart of it all. For 10 years, Captain America has been strong, Iron Man has been brilliant, Thor has been noble, and Hawkeye has been glib and skilled.

Suddenly, at the end of it all, every one of these characters is given a story that resonates on an emotional level, and compels a father to look inward at things like pain and grief and loss.

And I am quite certain that none of that emotion would have worked,

at least not with me, 24 years ago.

Just like I’m quite certain that 24 years ago I wouldn’t have ever stopped to wonder about the driver of the semi that careened down I-70 last week and ignited the worst traffic accident the city has ever seen.

I don’t really know what happened; I imagine we’ll all find out soon enough. And I believe it likely that the driver is guilty of, at the very least, errors in judgment which led to the deaths of four people. The ripple effects of those errors in judgment will be felt for a long time and in many families.

spent on this ill-conceived project. In addition to the negative impacts on their community is the fact that none of the planned exits from the highway provide convenient access to their community.

That fact contradicts the claim that the highway is needed to serve growing Leyden Rock.

The Parkway will provide access only to the residential area of Candelas at the east end of that development.

There’s no humor in the Second Amendment.

It causes automatic responses and involuntary impulses — on both sides.

Now: Along comes the “red flag” bill.

Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said, “We cannot and will not stand by idly as your freedoms and liberties are threatened.”

Were any of our freedoms and liberties threatened when an 18-year-old from Florida flew to Colorado, took a ride from the airport directly to a Littletonarea gun shop, purchased a gun and was identified as a “credible threat” who closed schools and consequently impacted thousands of students and their parents?

Still not enough.

It’s possible — it’s probable — that the 18-year-old, who was infatuated with Columbine, had mental health issues.

How many of us have mental health issues?

It will not provide access to the commercial/business area at the west end near SH-93. To get to the commercial/business part of Candelas travelers from east or west will use SH-72 while those from north or south will use SH-93. The claim that the millions of taxpayer dollars spent to plan, build, operate and maintain the Parkway will be “reimbursed” from profits from toll revenue is not realistic, as the proposal is to build 10 miles of the highway, only half of what it will take to complete the connection with the NW parkway.

The “red flag” bill may not be perfect. But here’s a bulletin: Neither is the Second Amendment.

But it is viewed by many as if it were, and incontrovertible, even though practically every other longheld view, law, regulation and ardently held belief is periodically revisited, and often amended.

I am resigned to just about all of this by now. But I watch faces, and I see eyes widen whenever there’s an incident, and someone suggests that we do something about it, or, as Colorado legislator Lois Court said, “I am sick and tired of inaction when we see tragedies caused by gun violence.”

Court, in some parts of the state, would lose her job over those words.

And, 24 years ago, I’m pretty sure my first reaction to this horrific accident would have been anger and, well, judgment against the driver.

But, something stopped me last week to wonder this: imagine, for a moment, that it is possible the driver did not deliberately do anything wrong. What if he really believed there was time and space to bring his truck to a safe stop, only to be proved horribly wrong? Can you imagine what would have been going through his mind as he cleared past the Morrison exit and realized that death was shadowing his vehicle?

I had a similar experience a couple months ago when I saw a Ferrari parked, shall we say, very badly on Ward Road. Turned out, the car was stolen, and the driver was killed

Reply to a climate scientist I appreciate your comments on climate change, but you missed my main point, that we are often we are being frightened over climate change with bogus information. The left uses climate change as a political weapon for control and the right is in a bit of denial trying to fight the misinformation. Some teachers are telling only one side of the issue.

Students are often not informed about natural causes of climate change, over which we have no control. At times in history CO2 concentrations have been much larger, and other gasses may be more dangerous.

I personally debate that 97 percent of climate scientists agree on man’s contribution. Some papers challenge man’s contribution level. I think scientists who disagree are often not published.

Recently I looked up Polar Bears

and found conflicting sources as to their decline versus abundance.

Human activity contributes to climate change, as do volcanoes, melting permafrost, depletion of our rain forests, etc. US pollution is less than China and Africa. The little we do at enormous cost is political control for minimal benefit.

I reject those who do not look at the entire picture. We have seen many false prophets over the years.

Sources minimize man’s contribution as well as the reverse. I have been in medicine for over 45 years I can attest to the manipulation of data in all aspects of science.

William Hineser, Arvada Educator loan forgiveness I was thrilled to see the Educator Loan Forgiveness bill from my state Senator, Rachel Zenzinger, this ses-

sion. Colorado has a severe shortage of teachers, especially in rural areas and in certain hard-to-fill positions.

Young teachers coming out of college often cannot afford to live on a Colorado teacher’s salary, especially when they have student loan payments to make. This bill will pay up to $5,000 per year for up to five years as an incentive for teachers to serve in our schools. The Republicans killed a similar bill last year when they held the majority in the state Senate, but the bill passed this year under the Democratic majority. The importance of filling the educator pipeline with young, energetic, and qualified teachers for our state’s children cannot be overestimated.

I’m grateful that Senator Zenzinger introduced this bill and encourage you to thank her for it.

Caring for our Community by I am a naive misfit, something I have known for a long time. I don’t believe in fireworks on the Fourth of July. I don’t believe in Mother’s Day or Father’s Day or Valentine’s Day. And I don’t believe that the Second Amendment is untouchable.

A Boulder woman, Lindasue Smollen, and I are in agreement that something should be done, but she is more committed to it than I am. She paid for advertising on six billboards in Weld County. They read: “More Americans have died of gun violence since 1970, including murders, suicides, and accidents (1.4 million) than in all the wars in American history (1.3 million). Thoughts and prayers are not enough.”

I am trying my best to co-exist in a gun country and in a gun state. Daily, I hope none of my friends is hurt or killed by someone who might have had his or her gun sensibly taken away.

Nancy L. Zessin, 83, went home to her heavenly father April 25th 2019 after battling MS for over 40 years.

She is a proud longtime Olde Town Arvada resident.

Beloved Mother of 5 children, survived by Scott Zessin, Sheri Goddard, Stephen Zessin Goodrich, and Sarah Hogue, 11 grandchildren, Great Grandmother to 11 and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. Preceded in death by husband Earl Zessin, daughter, Susan Ternus, and granddaughter, Faith Goddard.

DIRNBERGER in the accident. I think a lot of us greeted that news with a little bit of dismissive snark. I did. Until two days later, I saw a young man walking across Ward Road to lay a bouquet of flowers at the site of the crash. Classmate? Best friend? Brother?

I don’t know. And I never will. But his life was changed forever.

The point of all these wanderings is this: the world is training us to make more snap judgments, but compassion takes time (like a good scotch).

And life changes in the blink of an eye. Cultivate the things of value that take time, even if those happen to be movies.

Joseph “Leo” Dirnberger was born in Underwood TWP, MN on July 19, 1926.

In 1944, he joined the Navy.

He was a proud WWII Navy veteran serving aboard the battleship USS Mississippi.

He attended NMSU in Las Cruces. Leo moved the family to Arvada, CO in 1966.

He retired from USDA and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Presbyterian Mission, traveling JACKSON

to Alaska and Kentucky.

Returning to Wheat Ridge CO he worked for Wheat Ridge Parks and Recreation, Coors Field and volunteered at the Senior Center. He moved to Brighton, CO his home was at Inglenook Retirement Home and passed away March 31.

Mountain biking sparks enthusiasm among participants in popular activity

efore she became executive director of the Colorado High School Cycling League, a nonprofit youth development organization that produces mountain bike race series, Kate Rau worked in the intervention field.

Rau worked for Singletrack Mountain Bike Adventures, a youth race development program that offers summer camps and team programs during the spring, summer and fall.

She witnessed firsthand the impact that mountain biking can have on people, including children who found themselves in trouble.

“It strengthens family bonds, and it connects people to their community.

Those are elements that are proven to reduce the need for intervention — whether it’s mental health, substance abuse, feeling isolated, or being addicted to screen time,” said Rau. “I think we’re all, including kids, under a tremendous amount of stress.

Biking is pretty much year-round in Colorado, and it’s something you can do with your family.”

The problem isn’t necessarily finding a trail, it’s finding the wherewithal to strap on a helmet and jump on a mountain bike.

Once that wherewithal is found, the benefits can be tremendous — just ask Gary Harty.

Harty lives in Lakewood, and he has been a strong advocate for getting people on bikes. He brought Cycling Without Age to Lakewood over a year ago, a program that provides three-wheeled bikes, called trishaws, to people who cannot ride a bike by themselves. The trishaws have a couchlike seat big enough for

two people to sit on, while volunteers power it for senior communities all throughout Lakewood. The longtime cyclist also founded the Lakewood Bicycle Advisory Team, a group that advocates for better infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.

Harty and his wife got into mountain biking six years ago. Bear Creek Lake Park is close to his home, and it is one of the many places where he and his wife enjoy spending a sunny day.

“Psychologists have known for a long time that exercise creates endorphins. I think to a certain extent, that becomes addictive,” said Harty.

he Kentucky Derby is an American tradition that goes all the way back to 1875 and has become an event that not only celebrates horse racing, but spring style and quality libations.

And though Denver is more than a thousand miles from Louisville’s Churchill Downs, the Denver metro area has fully embraced the race and its culture.

“We’re the largest Derby party outside of Louisville,” said Drake Harris, board member of the Sean “Ranch” COMING FoundaATTRACTIONS Lough tion, which hosts the Denver Derby Party at the Denver Performing Arts Complex’s Sculpture Park. “This year we’ll host up to 5,500 guests. We’ve turned the Derby into an occasion rather than an Clarke Reader event.”

This year’s Derby falls on May 4, and there’s a bevy of options to select from. Numerous bars all over the metro area will be screening the race and offering specials, but some places go above and beyond. Just some examples include a Mini Derby at The North Green, Derby Day at Union Station and Jockeys, Juleps and Jazz and a Pool Terrace viewing party at Denver’s Four Seasons Hotel.

No matter which party you attend, there are certain things they’re going to have in common: there will be mint juleps as far as the eye can see, you’re going to hear a lot of big band and Dixieland jazz and you better bring your A-game when it comes to clothing.

“Part of the success of the event is that it’s kind of the opening of spring, so people get to go out in their fancy clothes,” Harris said. “Both guys and gals take their outfits very seriously.”

Another commonality is many of the derby parties raise money for charity. The Mini Derby collects for Minds Matter of Denver and Next Step Horse Rescue, while for the past 18 years, the Denver Derby Party has been 100 percent for the Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation, which provides full-ride scholarships to Colorado State University to inner-city youths.

“This is an event with a cause, and we take that very seriously. We tell our recipients they’re getting the same kind of scholarship as a star quarterback,” Harris said.

“I think bicycling in general does that, and mountain biking does that even more, because you don’t have the stress of dealing automobiles. Mountain biking covers so many categories from tracks that are technical that demand a high level of skill, downhill racing and endurance racing. Mountain biking gets the average cyclist more into nature. Just that combo of exercise and being in tune with nature is good.”

Hitting trails for the first time Paul Rodriguez has been mountain biking for nine years. When he has the time, Rodriguez tries to get out on the trails at least three days a week. He is the co-owner of the Bicycle Shack in Arvada, a store that offers new and used bikes, custom builds, repair services and frame painting.

“If you’ve never (gone mountain biking) before, you should. It’s a good way to get outside and get some sunshine, of course, but one of the most important things that I like is it’s a lot less dangerous than road biking, because you’re not competing with cars” said Rodriguez. “You feel a therapeutic sense of feeling, because mountain biking clears your mind.

The only thing that you’re thinking about is what is in front of you.”

mountain biking before, Rodriguez recommends hitting the trails at Green Mountain in Lakewood, North Table Mountain in Golden and Marshall Mesa Trailhead in Boulder.

Those trails aren’t difficult, or technical, and they’re great for getting the blood pumping, according to Rodriguez.

One of his favorite apps to use when mountain biking is the MTB Project app. The app, available for Android and iPhone, provides a GPS

on trails, mirroring a guidebook for Colorado trails. It also offers a feature that lets you download trail maps for when cell-phone service isn’t available.

“You can scope out your route, which is good, especially for new riders. The difference between a left and a right on a trail can be heading back to the car, or another five-mile loop,” said Rodriguez.

For those who are looking to purchase a mountain bike for the

first time, Rodriguez recommends Jamis Bikes. He says the brand offers everything from mountain bikes for small children to more upscale mountain bikes. Rodriguez’s mountain biking survival kit that he carries with him includes tire levers, an extra tube, a patch kit and a hand pump.

“It’s nice, just in case you find yourself in a tough spot when you’re on the trail. You don’t want to have to hike out of a trail and have to carry your bike,” said Rodriguez. “We’re lucky enough to live in Colorado, and I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the trails that our state has to offer.”

Arvada Center announces 2019-2020 theater season Shows will include regional premieres, tellings of classic stories STAFF REPORT

The Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities begins its 2019-20 theatre season in the Main Stage Theatre with the regional premiere of “Bright Star” — a dramatic story of love, loss and regret set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the 1940s.

Breaking outside of his usual comedic style, Steve Martin, along with Edie Brickell, wrote the story, book and music for this sentimental story told through the sounds of American bluegrass.

The season continues in the Black Box Theatre with a production of “Plaza Suite,” by Neil Simon. Taking place in one suite of the Plaza Hotel in New York, three separate couples navigate the tensions of their romantic lives. Performed in three acts, this production will feature the same actors in each story, creating a repertory theatre in miniature.

Repertory Company will perform three plays in repertory beginning in 2020.

The repertory season kicks off

with a regional premiere adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express.” This new version of the classic murder mystery by Ken Ludwig promises a fun, fastpaced thrill ride. The second play to be performed in repertory is an innovative reframing of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Created with a company of eight actors, the tale comes to life with the help of music, magic and a little mayhem.

The repertory company ends its run with “Small Mouth Sounds,” by Bess Wohl. Another regional premiere, the play takes place in a yoga retreat in which the participants have taken a vow of silence. The heartfelt story unfolds as the characters attempt to connect — without saying a single word.

The Arvada Center Theatre ends its season with an irreverent look at Shakespeare through the lens of classic musical comedy: “Something Rotten!” This regional premiere paints Shakespeare as a rock star of his time and follows two brothers attempting to topple him with their own writing.

Wheat Ridge baseball stays undefeated in 4A Jeffco

WHEAT RIDGE — Wheat Ridge baseball coach Adam Miller would love to have newly named Chuck Griffith Jr. Field be the location for a Class 4A regional tournament May 18.

“We kind of control our own destiny which is where we want to be,” Miller said after the Farmers’ 6-1 victory over Evergreen improved Wheat Ridge to 5-0 in 4A Jeffco League play. “I’ve always said anytime we have one the league championship that usually leads to a state-bound team because you get to host and we’d get to play here. League championship is very important.”

The most important hit Tuesday, April 23, was a two-run home run by Wheat Ridge junior Dominic Brock that began a five-run bottom of the sixth inning by the Farmers.

“I ran into it at the right time to help out the team,” Bronk said of his tworun home run. “It was perfect timing and got the mojo going.”

Evergreen senior pitcher Paul Schreffler had given up just one run on three hits coming to the sixth inning. A leadoff single by sophomore Wes Miller, followed by the home run by Bronk, gave the Farmers their first lead of the game.

“We just couldn’t get a big shot,” Coach Miller said of the Farmers scoring just one run through the first five innings. “Wes came through and got on base for us. Dominic is as good as a hitter we’ve had in a long time.”

Wheat Ridge tacked on three more runs while sending 11 batters to the plate. After a pair of bunt singles, sophomore Scott Kingman delivered with a two-run single off Evergreen sophomore Nick Villims after Schreffler came out of the game.

Sophomore Rocco Tate pushed the lead to 6-1 with a long fly ball to centerfield scored the Farmers’ fifth run of the frame.

“That is as good of a game we’ve played in league in a while,” Coach Miller said. “That was good. It’s a good win for us.”

Wheat Ridge senior pitcher Aaron Arcilise was masterful again to pick up his sixth victory on the hill. Arcilise threw a complete game while striking out nine and walking just one.

“I just wanted to keep pounding the

zone and not walking anybody, get the outs you can get,” Arcilise said. We didn’t want to give them scoring opportunities with free baserunners.”

Arcilise was touched up for three hits in the first inning, but limited the damage to just a single run on an RBI hit by Evergreen senior Bryce Pearson. It was the first loss for Schreffler, who had a 5-1 record last season with a 2.62 ERA for the Cougars during their run to the state tournament.

“He (Schreffler) is a great pitcher. He hits all his locations,” Bronk said. “We saw him enough times where everyone started picking him up and we executed perfectly.”

Evergreen (10-8, 4-4 in 4A Jeffco) suffered an 11-10 loss to the Farmers (12-4, 7-0) on Thursday, April 25. It’s looking like the 4A Jeffco League title will come down to rivals Golden (12-5, 6-1) and Wheat Ridge. The Demons and Farmers are scheduled to face eachother in back-to-back home-and-away games on May 7 and 9.

Book’s live-or-die story proves impossible to ignore

Y

ou’ve been told it’s impossible.

No one can do it. You may as well not even try because it’s never been done before. Not possible — except when it is, because there’s no other way. It’s a live-or-die matter, as in the new book “I Had to Survive”

by Dr. Roberto Canessa and Pablo Vierci.

Growing up in BOOKWORM Uruguay, the privileged eldest son of two professionals, Canessa was highspirited, spoiled and a little wild. A group of Irish Christian brothers finally tamed him, proving to him he was a leader Terri At 16, Canessa was Schlichenmeyer a rugby star; at 18, he was a member of the Uruguayan national rugby team, though his passion was medicine. He was, in fact, a 19-year-old second-year medical student on the afternoon of Oct. 13, 1972, when the plane in which he was riding crashed into a remote part of the Andes.

Of the 40-odd passengers and crew aboard, many were killed instantly or died soon after the crash. The cold was relentless and, because they figured someone would be looking for them, those that remained

“began to transform into a single organism” as they worked together to stay warm and hydrated. Survivors devised ways to keep one another alive through clever inventions, repairs of damaged equipment and adaptations of the meager items not destroyed in the crash. Canessa became the group’s doctor. Three cousins took unofficial leadership roles.

But as days turned to weeks and supplies slowly disappeared, weaker individuals died, one by one, of starva-

tion. Canessa only hints about who first suggested they “nourish ourselves with the bodies” of those who died, but it was a “simple and audacious” idea that sustained the remaining survivors until they were rescued.

Indeed, audacity was mandatory: More than two months after the crash, Canessa and his friend, Nando, undertook a daring trek that took them across sheer ice, on tiny ledges above crevasses, and down avalanche-prone snow to a valley of flowers.

It was there where, weak and barely alive, they found the man who rescued them.

Today, Canessa is a renowned pediatric cardiologist in Montevideo,

which may seem like a tenuous tie to his early story. Part of the explanation for that incongruity comes in chapters written by patients and thankful parents of children he’s saved – chapters that might be more compelling, were they not so repetitive or frequent. As it is, because they’re too similar and too many, those outside testimonials lose their effect.

Instead, what moves this book along is the re-telling of the tragedy, woven between intimate chapters on how it deeply affected the way Canessa lives his life. That almost-44-yearold endurance tale is a nail-biter which, paired with insight from Canessa, his father and other rescuers, offers up the best part of this book, bringing the grueling story to a new generation unfamiliar with the Andes crash and updating it for those who remember it well.

And if you fall into either category, ignoring “I Had to Survive” could be impossible.
