On the morning the train horns silenced, Arvada Mayor Marc Williams stood at the podium to give the annual State of the City address.

The long-awaited quiet zone in Arvada along the Regional Transportation District’s G Line went into effect April 19.

The line will go into service April 26 and will be free to ride for the first two weeks. The opening of the longawaited commuter rail was one of the highlights celebrated April 19 at the State of the City breakfast hosted by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce.

Other celebrations include the additions of trail segments and neighborhood park renovations completed in 2018. The renovations of West Woods Golf Club and the Fitzmorris Recreation Center — a join project with Apex Parks and Recreation District and Jeffco schools — were also highlighted.

In 2019, the city will continue its mission to improve neighborhoods with the renovation of Rainbow East Park and by replacing Meyers Pool — another partnership with Apex and the school district.

On May 4 the city will celebrate the hundred anniversary of McIlvoy Park.

This year, the city will also embark of road projects that were approved by voters with the bond extension last November. Projects include the widening of Ralston Road and improvements to W. 72nd Ave. The regional Jefferson Parkway project is also of importance to the city, Williams said.

“It’s important to our community to be able to get that regional traffic off our local streets,” Williams said of the parkway project. “We look forward to getting that moving forward.”

This year, the city will also take on the contentious issues of homelessness, waste hauling and housing.

Homelessness has become and issue talked about frequently in the city of Arvada. Williams said that in 2005, the Arvada Police department received

118 calls related to homelessness. By 2017 that number increased to 1,132. In 2018, it almost doubled with 2,037 calls to the police on this topic.

“It’s a significant challenge,” Williams said. “We are certainly not alone. We see it throughout the metro area in fact, we see it throughout the country.”

Williams said that solving the issue of homelessness is a priority.

“We have all put too much time energy and resources into our neighborhoods, our parks, our trails, our entrance ways and even Olde Town Arvada to have certain individuals make it an unpleasant place to visit,” Williams said. “I want Arvada to be safe and inviting for individuals and families.”

When it comes to safety, Williams said while Arvada continues to have one of the lowest crime rates for a city of its size — 4,200 made by the Arvada Police Department in 2018 — crime is an issue that can’t be ignored. In this,

he referenced recent events including a threat against metro area schools, and a chemical bomb attack against a police officer.

“Those kinds of dangers are out here, even in Arvada,” Williams said.

Next month, the Whisper Creek Community Police Station is scheduled to open serving northwest Arvada, also known as the Delta sector.

When it comes to housing, Williams acknowledged a need to improve access to quality housing which is affordable to a broad range of income levels. He said future work force, senior living and micro housing projects may be happening in the near future.

The issue of waste hauling has become a hot topic with some residents calling for a single hauler option in hopes of reducing costs, wear and tear on the roads and provide more options for recycling.

Williams said council will be making a decision on trash hauling in 2019. Options include council deciding

to mandate single hauling; keep it the same; or put it out to the community as a vote.

“We recognize that there are challenges ahead to achieving our shared vision for Arvada,” Williams said in closing. “We have to work collaboratively. We want to address the challenges of homelessness in our community. We want to continue to smartly manage growth so it enhances the quality of life. And we have to continually monitor and watch what’s going on with the economy locally, regionally and nationally so we can be nimble and maintain the financial situation we’re in.

“I hope that you can see — and I do — that we’re continuing to move forward with the city’s mission to dream big and deliver because it is so very important. We want to continue to listen to all of you. We want your input. We want to be able to keep Arvada the special place it is and make it even better.”

Timing the Sale of Your Current Home and Purchase of New Home Can Be Challenging

Have you faced this dilemma? You want to buy a home that better fits your family’s needs, but you are stymied by the need to sell your current home to pay for the next one.

So you stay put in a home that doesn’t quite meet your needs.

(I’ll write about the challenges facing renters who want to become home owners in next week’s column.)

There are several ways to tackle the challenge of buying a home when it depends on selling your current home. Let’s look at different scenarios based, first of all, on the amount of equity you have in your current home.

If you own your home “free and clear” and are downsizing to a lesser priced home, the easiest path is to take out a home equity line of credit (or HELOC) on your current home. This kind of loan is easier to obtain than a standard mortgage, especially when done through a credit union. Note: You must do this before going on the market.

When I obtained a HELOC from a credit union, they didn’t even charge for title insurance and did only a “drive-by” appraisal, and the closing took place at the loan officer’s desk with no closing fee. It couldn’t have been easier.

If you have a mortgage on your home but still have substantial equity, a HELOC can provide the cash you need for a 20% down payment, which is what’s required to get the most favorable interest rate on the mortgage for the home you’re

buying. You would no longer be a cash buyer for your new home, and the mortgage lender for your home purchase may make the sale of your current home a condition for approving the loan on your new home, depending on the size of your income and the ratio of your debts to your income. But that doesn’t mean you can’t succeed in buying the new home.

Under the right circumstances, a seller and his/her listing agent will consider an offer that is contingent on the sale of the buyer’s current home. I have succeeded in this process as a buyer’s agent by showing that the buyer’s home is ready to be listed immediately and will be priced to sell quickly based on a market analysis.

Don’t expect, however, to win a bidding war against non-contingent buyers.

You can avoid bidding wars and succeed with a contingent offer by looking only at homes that have been on the market over two weeks. Your agent can set up an email alert with that being one of the search criteria. Then be sure to include in the contract the price that you are going to list your home and submit with it a market analysis demonstrating that it is priced to sell quickly. That market analysis should include a spreadsheet of comparable homes sold in the last six months,

Your agent could even enter the home on the MLS as an “incoming” (not yet active) listing, complete with high quality photos, showing that you’re ready to “pull the trigger” immediately after your contract is accepted on the new home.

The contract to purchase your new home could have a closing date of 45 to 60 days, and if you have priced your current home correctly, you should get multiple offers and be under contract within, say, four days with a buyer who has agreed to match the closing date on your new home.

after which you would lose your earnest money if you fail to close on your purchase. That date should not be the day of closing but maybe a week earlier. If the contract to purchase your current home has the same date for that last opportunity for the buyer to terminate and get their earnest money back, you can have some peace of mind about everything working out well.

When I write a contingent contract, I like to add a provision that the seller can terminate if my buyer’s home is not under contract within, say, a week or 10 days after going under contract. That increases the likelihood of acceptance.

‘Not a single one of us walked out the same’ Survivors and loved ones gather to remember 13 killed in 1999 at Columbine

Twenty years since the day hell opened beneath Columbine High School. Since students streamed out of the south Jefferson County school, their hands over their heads, fleeing two classmates turned murderers.

Twenty years since families learned their loved ones had been taken. Since the community suffered a wound that may never completely heal.

On April 20, 20 years since the darkest day many will ever know, hundreds gathered in Clement Park, just around the corner from the school, to remember, and to share the pain and love that followed that day in 1999.

“Not all scars are visible on the skin,” Sean Graves, who was shot in the attack’s first moments, told the crowd. “On that day, there were 2,000 people inside… Not a single one of us walked out the same.”

But the mood in the park was not despair or misery, but hope and appreciation that after two decades,

loved ones was crucial in the months and years following the attack, said Patrick Ireland, who to many was once known as “the boy in the window.” The world watched live in 1999 as two SWAT officers pulled Ireland, who had been shot multiple times, through a broken window of the school onto the roof of an armored vehicle.

“The amount of loving, healing energy was incredible,” Ireland said of the aftermath.

Throughout the memorial event, babies cooed in strollers, toddlers scribbled in coloring books and kids scampered among the crowd — new, young lives, for whom the tragedy at Columbine is something vague that

happened long before their birth.

The pain may never fully subside, said Dawn Anna, whose daughter Lauren Townsend was killed in the attack.

“Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through this day,” Anna said. “Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to get through any day. But I think of Lauren, and I hear her say: ‘Do it for me. Do something wonderful for me today.’”

Toward the end of the ceremony, former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis read the names of those killed by the attackers.

Woman who spurred school shutdowns found dead Sol Pais, 18, died by suicide in Mount Evans area, police say

A Florida woman whose behavior spurred a massive shutdown of Denver-area schools died by suicide near Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, officials said on April 17.

Sol Pais, 18, traveled from Florida to Colorado on April 15, FBI Special Agent Dean Phillips said in a news conference.

Phillips described Pais as obsessed with the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

Authorities were not aware that Pais planned to target any specific school for an attack, but said they grew concerned based on a combination of actions, comments to acquaintances and online postings, and the timing with the 20th anniversary of the shooting drawing near, Phillips said.

Pais bought three one-way tickets to Denver, Phillips said, for April 15, 16 and 17, and took the first of the three flights.

Though officials did not name the gun store, a Facebook post by Colorado Gun Broker on West Bowles Avenue in south Jefferson County said Pais purchased a shotgun there.

“We had no reason to suspect she was a threat to either herself or anyone else,” according to the post, which is attributed to store owner Josh

Rayburn.

The store is less than two miles from Columbine High School.

From there, Pais was dropped off in the Mount Evans area by a driver in a “for-rent vehicle,” Phillips said.

“We don’t know why that was the location of her choosing,” Phillips said.

The driver told agents she might be in the area, Phillips said, but

were waiting for daybreak to begin a search.

FBI agents and Clear Creek County Sheriff ’s deputies discovered Pais’s body in the Mount Evans area about 10:30 a.m. on April 17, Phillips said.

She appears to have died by a selfinflicted gunshot wound, he said.

Colorado authorities were first alerted to Pais’ actions by FBI agents in Miami on April 16, Phillips said.

People in Florida contacted local police after noticing Pais had disappeared, Phillips said. Local police in turn notified the FBI’s Miami field office, who notified Denver agents.

Denver FBI officials didn’t become aware of Pais until after she had procured the shotgun, Phillips said.

Pais’ presence kicked off a massive manhunt on April 16 and 17, prompting most of the Denver metro area’s school districts to cancel classes on April 17. Most schools were expected to resume classes as normal on April 18.

Phillips declined to comment on Pais’ mental health or social media activity. The investigation into Pais’s death is ongoing, Phillips said, and will examine whether she acted alone.

Asked by a reporter what he would say to parents who called the school shutdowns an overreaction, Phillips said, “As a parent, I would say thank you to the school system for protecting my child.”

Jeffco officials, former Columbine principal reflect on Pais situation FBI warning of threatening individual leads to lockouts and school closures

After two days of disrupted schools, and a statewide hunt by law enforcement, Jefferson County Public Schools will be heading back to something closer to normal Thursday.

Multiple Jeffco schools — including Columbine High School, all other schools in the Columbine High School area, and all schools in the mountain areas of the county — were placed on lockout around noon on April 16.

Lockouts involve limiting all access in or out of area schools, but allows teachers and students to maintain most school-day activities inside.

Those schools dismissed students at the normal time, albeit with additional security from the district and county sheriff ’s deputies.

The reason for the lockout, along with similar precautions taken by districts across the Denver metro area, was 18-year-old Florida resident Sol Pais. The FBI described Pais as being “extremely dangerous” and “infatuated” with the 1999 Columbine High School shooting that left 13 victims dead. Her presence in Colorado led to a statewide hunt for her.

The Jeffco school district held a press conference April 17 with Sheriff Jeff Shrader, shortly after Pais’ body was found.

“Every report that we get as a threat, law enforcement works it, the school works it, and my team works it, and it all comes together — that trifecta of responding. My biggest fear is not being there,” John McDonald, director of safety and security for Jeffco Schools, said at the press conference. “That would be devastating to me. I struggle taking vacations.

District officials said that school and special activities, including Columbine anniversary events, would continue as normal for the rest of the week.

McDonald said that, sadly, Columbine in particular was no stranger to threats over the years, though he wished that was not the case.

“We are not a tourist attraction, and we are not a place for you to gain inspiration,” he said.

The incident opened up old wounds for Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal of Columbine High School at the time of the 1999 shooting. DeAngelis also spoke at the press conference. He was at the school on April 16 when the lockout was announced, and said he felt the same anxiety as that day in 1999.

Every year, during the week of April 20, the day the 1999 Columbine shooting occurred, DeAngelis is at the school to offer support.

“When I started teaching back in 1979, and even when I was principal, the only drills we did were fire drills.

People ask why we have to do it? Our society has changed from 20 years ago. There’s been so many lessons learned.”

Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Jason Glass also spoke a the district press conference. He has two children who are in kindergarten and first grade. He told his children that there was someone who wanted to harm students at school, and that he was keeping them home so tto be safe while the search for Pais continued.

His children asked why Pais would do that, and what she was thinking, questions that he said are tough for adults to answer.

“I think when it comes to those questions that come up with children, we have to let them ask, and we have to be as honest as we can and know that neither the adults nor children fully understand what’s happening,” said Glass.

In a news release about the events of the last few days, the Jefferson County Education Association called for an end to school violence.

“We demand that this not be the norm of our community. We demand more mental health supports for our students and educators. It is time to have hard conversations about meaningful gun reform and demand that our legislators pass those laws,” the statement reads in part.

Drake seventh graders share ideas through editorial cartoons Topics range from politics, to environmental issues and bullying

Topics from political controversies to environmental issues and bullying were chosen by seventh-grade students at Drake Middle School in Arvada as they learned to express themselves through the art of editorial cartoons.

After learning about the different elements of an editorial cartoon in social studies, they set out to make their own.

“I keep looking for ways to do authentic learning — make it interesting,” said Carine Lockwood, seventhgrade teacher at Drake. “Learning should be interesting and fun. When it’s fun and interesting, sometimes they don’t know they’re learning.”

For student Madison Morgan, the hardest part of the project was coming up with the overall idea.

“I didn’t want to do something too political,” she said.

Eventually, she settled on an image of a donkey kicking down a brick wall while an elephant stands by with the caption, “Will they ever agree?”

“I’ve never really paid too much attention to politics,” Morgan said.

Through the project, Rhiannon Danborn, learned how bias can affect the perception of the person viewing an editorial. When creating her own cartoon she used that bias to create a statement on environmental issues and climate change deniers.

“One of the things I’m very passionate about is the environment and specifically climate change,” Danborn said. “One of the things that struck me as ironic was the statements of our own president, the person in that position of power that can really change things and help us move forward.”

For her cartoon, Danborn included things President Donald Trump has said in relation to climate change, including his tweets and swirled them around a melting earth.

“I feel that the issue of climate change will fall to my generation,” Danborn said. “My children and grandchildren will really feel the effects of this.”

In her cartoon Madison Young focused on the effects of bullying.

“I think that bullying and suicide is starting to become more and more of a problem,” Young said. “So I wanted to show the perspective that a bully, they might not think they are doing that much, but if they cause someone to do something like commit suicide, they’re really regretting it.”

Young’s editorial shows a student being bullies and then his absence a year later with the bully asking, “Is there an undo button?”

All seventh grade students at Drake participated in this curriculum of learning about and creating their own editorials.

Lockwood said one of the most interesting aspects of the project was to see students share their drawings and ideas with others.

“A lot of the editorials were against Trump, but I have a few students who are very pro-Trump,” Lockwood said. “So it was interesting to see the students share their ideas without arguing.”

You can’t write about the human condition and be apolitical

A

pril is National Poetry Month. As a poet myself, I believe that poetry can be accessible, can speak with and for many voices, and can – and does – make a difference for the world we live in.

Many of us probably have a favorite poem or two, perhaps even from our childhood days. Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, A Child’s Garden of Verses, is a treasure trove of memories. I learned Christina Rosetti’s poem “Who has seen the wind?” early in life, which I recall on almost any Colorado Day: “Who has seen the wind? / Neither you nor I: / But when the trees bow down their heads / The wind is passing by.”

I also revel in work that goes back centuries – John Donne from the

early 1600s, William Blake – “Tyger Tyger, burning bright / in the forests of the night” – from the late 1700s, as well as in more contemporary writing, such as that of Wisława Szymborska In fact, it was probably in discovering Szymborska, who Andrea Doray received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996, that I truly entered a world of activist poetry.

Szymborska’s themes of struggle and resistance stem from her years in Poland during World War II. In 1865, Walt Whitman published poems of his own experiences in

the Civil War, such as “Beat! Beat!

Drums!” One poem that haunts me is Sarah Cleghorn’s “The Golf Links” from the 1910s: “The golf links lie so near the mill / that almost every day / the laboring children can look out / and see the men at play.”

In Maya Angelou’s 1983 poem, “[I Know Why the] Caged Bird [Sings],” the poet writes of a caged bird that “… can seldom see through his bars of rage …” but that “…sings of freedom.”

Nikki Giovanni wrote about “Rosa Parks” in 2002, and Emmy Perez wrote in 2016 “Not One More Refugee Death.”

Consider the words on Bob Dylan, poet of the 1960s (and, yes, a musician), also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, “for having created new poetic expressions within the

great American song tradition.”

And what about the song “Four Dead in Ohio” by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in reaction to the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970? Or the unforgettable (if you’re in my generation) “Blowin’ in the Wind,” famously performed by Peter, Paul and Mary, and also written by Bob Dylan?

Although some of today’s poetry (and especially lyrics) does refer to – or actually incite – violence, that’s not the peaceful activism of which I write here.

The world lost a peaceful activist poet in the last year when poet Sam Hamill died, who had organized the movement, Poets Against the War, in protest of the Iraq war.

creased wildfires, droughts and disease we’ll see with climate change but not everyone is aware of the impacts to air pollution. Ozone pollution forms in the presence of heat. More hot days can lead to more ozone pollution which means more harm to those that are most vulnerable to air pollution – our children. Our kids count on us to protect them.

For their sake, I hope Senator Zenzinger takes swift action to approve HB19-1261.

Across cities and college campuses in the United States, these tend to be the staples of Cinco de Mayo. Popular Mexican American restaurants and rooftop bars in the Denver metro area typically overflow on this party holiday.

This year Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, falls on a Sunday. Aside from the fun it brings, the holiday is rich with history, a celebration of triumph and culture.

For Andrea Barela — who heads the largest two-day Cinco de Mayo celebration in the state, held May 4 and 5 this year — it’s a weekend for cultures to blend. In today’s political climate, she explains, that can otherwise be a challenge.

“With the turmoil and racism our country is experiencing, this is the

weekend we forget all of that and come together as a community to celebrate,” said Barela, the president of NEWSED Community Development, which promotes economic success of underserved populations in the Denver metro area. “These are cultural events, they are significant and they should be maintained.”

History Cinco de Mayo — sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day — is celebrated by a population of residents in the Mexican state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City.

The day honors May 5, 1862, when the Mexican Army defeated European invaders at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph was unexpected — Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza led the outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans, according to the History Channel. Nonetheless they triumphed and maintained their land.

But it was a lot of fun to feature something we’re kind of well known for,” said Jennifer Garner, exhibits curator at the airport. “Sometimes people think about all the crazy stuff that goes with Colfax, and they don’t realize the really rich history there and what’s happening now.”

The exhibit will be on display through June, located on Ansbacher Hall in the Jeppesen Terminal, Level 6 North, before A Bridge Security.

To put the exhibit together, Garner worked with a variety of organizations, including the 40 West Arts District, The Colfax Museum, the Denver Film Society and Historic Denver.

These organizations donated modern and historic artifacts to help give a glimpse of Colfax’s story.

“We all know Colfax has its own legend and lore, so we were very selective about the artifacts we donated for inclusion,” said Bill Marino, 40 West board chair of and executive director for the Lakewood West Colfax Business Improvement District. “We included a hubcap that has been turned into a piece of art, magazines that tell our story, sculptures from local artists and more.”

For Garner, the best part about organizing the exhibit was the lesserknown facts she learned about the exhibit. For example, there used to be many country-western bars on East Colfax, so many that it was known as the Nashville of the West.

“I recommend visitors pay attention to all the details included in the exhibit,” said Alex Renteria, public information officer at the airport. “It’s like coming home for people returning to Denver, and it’s a chance to experience our home’s history for everyone else.”

Providing the Jurassic experience Friends of Dinosaur Ridge celebrates 30th anniversary

T

here’s something mystical about dinosaurs.

It could be the sheer size of them, said Jeff Lamontagne, executive director of Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, or because they’re no longer here and that “there’s nothing quite like them roaming the earth today.”

No matter where peoples’ fascination with dinosaurs derives from, one thing that’s certain is Dinosaur Ridge is the place to visit to learn about the massive creatures that lived in Colorado about 150 million years ago.

“Because Dinosaur Ridge is globally recognized as an important paleontology site,” Lamontagne said, “there’s a lot of pride in the community for Dinosaur Ridge.”

Dinosaur Ridge is a designated National Natural Landmark in Morrison, world-famous for its dinosaur tracks and fossils that can be viewed on the ridge’s four sites — Bones Quarry, Crocodile Creek, Dinosaur Tracksite and Brontosaur Bulges — as well as a secondary site in Golden called Triceratops Trail.

According to a paper authored by five paleontologists that was published in the 2016 book, “Dinosaur Tracks: The Next Steps,” Dinosaur Ridge is ranked number one and Triceratops Trail is ranked number three for track

There are 16 different criteria that determine this ranking, said Kermit Shields, a retired geologist and current Friends of Dinosaur Ridge board member. In brief, Shields said, it has to with site size and preservation, number of tracks and different species represented, and geologic and historic features of the site; as well as its visitation and educational value.

“Dinosaur Ridge has something for people of all different ages and

interests,” Shields said. “Talking about dinosaurs is a great hook to get anyone excited about science.”

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, a nonprofit, operates Dinosaur Ridge in partnership with Jefferson County Open Space. A small staff and volunteers run the day-to-day operations of

the site, its educational programming and visitor facilities.

Hosting more than 235,000 visitors in 2018, Friends of Dinosaur Ridge’s mission is twofold — to ensure preservation of the site’s natural and historic discoveries, and provide education to the public.

Circa 1988, Joe Tempel, who was employed as the Denver area environmental manager for CDOT at the time, heard that dinosaur tracks were being chiseled out of Dinosaur Ridge and stolen. So, he got together with Dick Scott, a local paleontologist, and John Dolson, a local geologist, to figure out how best to preserve Dinosaur Ridge.

About a year later, a chain link fence was installed, Friends of Dinosaur Ridge was formed “and the rest is history,” Tempel said, who became the organization’s first executive director and served from 2001-2016. Tempel and his wife Holly now reside in South Carolina.

Since the formation of Friends of Dinosaur Ridge, there has not been any major vandalism at Dinosaur Ridge, Tempel said. And from the previous thefts, some of the tracks were recovered, but not all of them. Oddly enough, Tempel said, about 10 years ago, a man returned a fossil to Dinosaur Ridge, stating that his son found it on his college campus, Tempel said.

Jeffco students speak in threat aftermath

As the threat of violence kept students across Colorado from attending school on April 17, Colorado Community Media reached out to students in Jefferson County, ground zero for one of the most infamous of school shootings. Here are some of their thoughts and feelings about school security on on the 20th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting.

“You just kind of grow up with it” Charles Wiebeck, a junior at Arvada West High School, says it was through other students he knows at Evergreen High School that he first heard about the school lockouts on April 16. Later in the day he learned more about the woman behind the threats — identified by law enforcement as 18-year-old Sol Pais — and her motivations.

“It’s really sad that people take too much of a deep look at the original Columbine shooting, and idolize Eric and Dylan,” said Wiebeck. “It’s like a shadow that will stick with the state forever.”

Wiebeck, like every public school student of his generation, has spent his whole childhood in the shadow of Columbine. He says school security features are just a way of life, as are live shooter drills.

On one hand, Wiebeck says most of his classmates have become desensitized to school shootings, and the word Columbine used almost as a joke. Even recent shootings do not seem to make as big an impact as they might have.

On the other hand, Wiebeck says, the awareness that a shooting could happen anywhere is something his classmates know well. He said that the metro area school districts closing schools on April 17 was “very necessary,” while there was still a chance of school violence.

“I would have felt on edge,” if school had still been held. “And I think I can say that for a lot of students.”

Wiebeck said that had the source of the threats, Sol Pais, not been found, that anxiety would have only gotten worse the closer it got to the April 20 anniversary of the Columbine shooting.

Intellectually, Wiebeck knows that the chance of being in a school shooting is very low, but he also knows that if it did happen all those precautions and security measures are not likely to save him if the shooter is determined, and knows how the school operates.

“Honestly,” he sighs, “I don’t know how you’d make schools safer.”

Columbine and Golden have a lot of similarities with their school spirit and sense of community, Babitz said. She serves as the Golden High School Student Body President and noted that she sees Columbine students regularly at student council events, as well as sporting events when the two schools play each other.

Babitz believes her fellow students at Golden likely used April 17 as a day to reflect on why all the schools closed that day.

Colorado playwright’s work takes the stage ‘Sin Street Social Club’ is farce set in New Orleans

Two weathered facades with shutters are set side by side at the back of a busy New Orleans square — one is the (Ba)sin Street Social Club and the other, we soon learn, houses the notorious Angie B. A (reluctant) young novice, Helen (Jessica Robblee), wanders onto the scene, saying she is to take her vows soon — and looking sad and uncertain about it.

The club had been built by her daddy, and her sister, Florie Mae (Emily Van Fleet) is a singer there, while protective manager/brother Pete (Zachary Andrews) lets us know that he needs for the sisters to be married or otherwise securely set in place, for the club to remain in family hands … he is overly bossy and protective as he tries to herd a pair of feisty young women. (Perhaps some modulation in his presentation might make him more effective?? Lots of yelling.) A deadline looms.

Florie Mae is all excited over a guy named Belville (Lance Rasmussen) she recently met on the street — sure he’s the one she’ll soon marry, while her brother thinks perhaps it should be his friend, local politician Tony Trudeau (a sleazy character played by Larry Cahn). Bellville is an awkward string bean of a guy — geeky is the word I want here — played with skill

by Lance Rasmussen. This cast of real pros avoids over-playing the comedy stuff, so it remains comedic throughout — much harder to do than it probably appears.

As mentioned above, the club had been built by their daddy, with some restrictions on the heirs: The women must be married — or settled (therefore the nunnery) — for the club to remain in family hands. And a deadline looms.

This new play by Colorado playwright Jessica Austgen, directed by Lynne Collins, “Sin Street Social Club,” was commissioned by the Arvada Center. It proceeds with wonderful ongoing backup music by our local favorite, Queen City Jazz Band, featuring Hank Troy’s deft fingers bouncing across the piano keyboard. It’s almost like having a QCJB concert as well as a play for an evening’s entertainment.

The play is based on “The Rover”

by English Restoration writer Aphra Behn, said to be the first woman to earn a living as a writer. All three of the Black Box Repertory plays are by women this year.

In this performance, understudy Zayaz Da Camara played the part of unsophisticated doofus Blunt, and we also soon meet swaggering man-abouttown Wilmore (Geoffrey Kent), who has

a twinkle in his eyes, his own agenda — and is like catnip for Helen, who has by now cast aside her religious avocation and is looking for a man to marry.

Action soon moves into traditional farce mode — silliness and rapid motion that looks disorganized, but takes very careful planning to avoid accidents, as character rush in and out, around each other, all the while talking to each other at a fast clip. Studied, cleverly managed physical comedy abounds under Lynne Collins’ deft direction.

Dialect coach Gabriella Cavallero’s steady touch is behind the dialogue as Southern accents are ever-present, but not overdone—the sort of professionalism we have come to expect at Arvada Center. Jason Ducat’s sound design with the ongoing Dixieland jazz background is another illustration of balance in this really delightful production.

Cinco De Mayo — or the fifth of May — is an annual celebration honoring the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Traditions in the state of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, include military parades, recreations of the battle and other festive events.

Cinco De Mayo is not a federal holiday, so for many Mexicans it’s just like any other day.

But because it isn’t a federal holiday, Cinco de Mayo is just like any other day for many Mexicans.

“Puebla is actually the only place in Mexico that celebrates this day,” said Highlands Ranch resident Lola Wiarco Dweck, who is of Mexican heritage, adding, “and in the U.S., it’s a holiday that’s observed more by Mexican-Americans and Americans than Mexicans.”

Dweck was raised in California.

Growing up, her family didn’t celebrate the holiday but she did perform ballet folklórico at some Cinco de Mayo festivals in Los Angeles, she said.

Today Dweck, a professional chef, celebrates by making foods that commemorate the colors of the Mexican flag: red, white and green, and cooking mole poblano, one of Puebla’s best-known dishes.

“It’s definitely become more mainstream, although I don’t think many Americans know the significance of the holiday,” Dweck said of Cinco de Mayo. “To those who celebrate, it’s a reason to get together, eat Mexican food, and drink beer and tequila.”

In 1987, Denver’s first Cinco de Mayo festival took place in the La Alma-Lincoln Park neighborhood, off Santa Fe Drive. Until recently, nearly 90 percent of the neighborhood’s population was Hispanic, according to Barela, whose mother helped start

the festival.

“It really started as a street event made to highlight the Santa Fe corridor and the west Denver neighborhood, to boost economic development,” Barela said. “It became very popular very quickly.”

It became so popular that it outgrew its original location and moved to Civic Center Park, near the Colorado Capitol in downtown Denver.

Using the arts to explore the idea of a homeland There’s been a lot of heated debate recently about borders and what it means to belong to one country or another. The Colorado History Center, in collaboration with the Northern Río Grande National Heritage Area, offers a unique artistic perspective with its new pop-up exhibit, “Without Borders.”

The exhibit features artists from southern Colorado, northern New Mexico and beyond who, according to information from the museum, “explore the concept of Borderlands and what homelands are today.”

Curated by Leland Chapin, the exhibit showcases diverse art media — including photography, jewelry, ceramics and more — as a way to foster introspection and conversation about where we all belong.

I like to give a nickname to my cars. My new one is a sedan. At least two people made up the words to appear next to the speedometer. The car communication techies said “How can we make this car more confusing for geezers?” Another computer geek said: “We’ll use different kinds of language — bossy statements and kind statements in the same car.

The more we confuse geezers trying to nickname their cars the better.”

When I park my car, it has a commanding personality like the Godfather Vito Corleone.

“Turn off your lights! (you dummy — or I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse. Don’t even leave them on for a second, or I’ll stand by your door with a gun.”

Another engineer wrote, “Key not detected in the vehicle.” This is more polite like Paddington Bear. It’s giving me the option of sitting in my car for hours without going anywhere.

I can get out of the car and find my keys or not.

Friends of Dinosaur Ridge is funded through the revenue generated from the public, guided bus tours; its two gift shops; various programming, including summer camps; donations; and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD).

“As a nonprofit, it depends on community support,” said Holly Tempel, a Colorado native who volunteered at Dinosaur Ridge and helped with fundraising efforts. “That’s how Dinosaur Ridge stays alive.”

For Marsha Barber, a former science teacher and currently the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge’s board chair, the best part is watching the excitement on the

children’s faces when they see a real dinosaur track for the first time.

Most kids enjoy reading books about dinosaurs, Barber said. So most of the students, specifically the kindergarteners through third graders, already know how to pronounce the names of their favorite dinosaur — stegosaurus, T-rex, brontosaurus, etc. But, Barber added, only a few of them know what a fossil is until their first visit to Dinosaur Ridge.

“This is where they can look at a real fossil inside the rock where it was found,” Barber said.

In addition, Lamontagne added, the tracks at Dinosaur Ridge are some of the most well-preserved tracks found anywhere on earth.

“Being able to put your hand in a real dinosaur track,” Lamontagne said, “is an experience unlike anything else you can do.”

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

While property taxes and homeowners insurance must continue to be paid, the removal of an oftensubstantial mortgage payment allows homeowners to ease the pressure of stretched financial obligations.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

Recent changes to the government insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (Reverse Mortgage) program

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

Another group of seniors that are benefiting from a reverse mortgage are those who own their homes free-andclear. The equity, or housing wealth, available to such homeowners is often substantial, and access to a portion of those funds can be life changing!

Pomona comes up just short on the baseball diamond

LAKEWOOD — Dakota Ridge baseball has found a flair for the dramatics earlier during Class 5A Jeffco League play.

In less than 48 hours, the Eagles (8-7, 2-0 in 5A Jeffco) scored in the final inning twice to pull off back-to-back conference victories. The latest escape act came Saturday, April 20, at Keli McGregor Field at All Star Park in a wild 12-10 win over Pomona (3-11, 0-2).

“Hopefully we don’t have any more of these during league, but if we do we know what to do to get the win,” said Dakota Ridge senior Ben Biffinger.

Dakota Ridge got an RBI single by Biffinger in the top of the seventh inning to break at 10-10 tie. Pomona intentionally walked senior Ryan Stohr after senior Jake Sansburn doubled with one out in the seventh.

“That is something we’ve talked about with Ben all year long,” Dakota Ridge coach Jeff Legault said of Pomona giving the free pass to Stohr to face Biffinger. “It’s going to happen in the future. They are going to come after (Biffinger) and he has to be ready to swing it.”

Biffinger finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two walks and a pair of runs scored.

“I feel like when they walk some intentionally that it’s my job to show them that they should have intentionally walked me,” Biffinger said. “I need to prove them wrong and I did that today.”

A fly ball to right field by junior Mason Sauter scored another running in the seventh to give Dakota Ridge an insurance run heading to the final half of the seventh with a two-run advantage.

Still, things got interesting when Pomona loaded the bases with one out and sophomore Brady Ritzman coming to the plate in the seventh. Ritzman belted a grand slam during the Panthers’ seven-run sixth inning, but the sophomore grounded out in a game-ending 6-43 double play.

“I think you have to give a lot of credit to Dakota,” Pomona coach EJ Mapps said. “After what we did in the sixth, a lot of high school teams would really let that affect them. Dakota Ridge isn’t like that. That’s due to Jeff and their other coaches.”

LAKEWOOD — Columbine’s girls soccer team didn’t mind having a game not decided by a single goal Monday, April 15.

The Rebels — No. 6 in the latest CHSAANow.com Class 5A girls soccer rankings — cruised to an 8-1 victory over Lakewood.

“This game really helped us find our touches and work well together to get a win out of it,” Columbine senior Libby Spangler said after the biggest margin of victory for the Rebels this season with the 7-goal victory at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Columbine racked up a 7-0 lead at halftime. Peyton Weber, Riley KaaliNagy, Evelyn Hammer, Annabelle Young and Spangler each had a goal for the Rebels before halftime. Senior Tessa Barton tacked on a pair of goals to add to her team-leading 12 goals on the season for Columbine (6-3-1, 3-0 in 5A Jeffco League).

“We got to play some good soccer,” Columbine coach Brian Todd said after the win. “We scored some good goals and got everyone in the game.

“We are playing a great schedule,” Todd said. “I’m proud of our girls so far through that. We’ve played some really good opponents. I think we are slowly getting to where we need to be.”

Colorado Community Media wins big at annual press convention STAFF REPORT

Colorado Community Media received 50 awards in the annual state press competition held April 10, including the prestigious public service award for a year-long series on the state of mental health in Douglas County.

The awards were spread among many of the 18 weeklies and two monthlies that CCM publishes in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Douglas, Elbert and Jefferson counties. They cover work done between Nov. 1, 2017 and Oct. 31, 2018.

“Being recognized by our peers is validation of the quality work of our staff,” Publisher Jerry Healey said.

“I am proud to be associated with the team here, and our readers can expect more good things to come.”

CCM’s papers won awards in all five weekly classifications, which were divided up based on size of circulation.

Class 1, for weeklies with a circulation of up to 1,000, was the smallest, and Class 5, for weeklies with a circulation greater than 7,000, was the largest.

Monthlies are in a separate class.

Among Class 2 weeklies, journalist Christy Steadman received first place for an in-depth look at gender in engineering fields and the top public service award for a story on a troublesome intersection in Golden. Steadman, with colleagues Shanna Fortier, Clarke Reader and editor Glenn Wallace also received first place for their ongoing series, “Homeless in Jeffco,” which explored the challenges facing

CCM reporters attended the shelter that night as part of the Denver metro area-wide annual effort to survey the homeless community. Also in that category, photographer Stefan Brodsky took first for a photo essay on a Memorial Day celebration in the Northglenn/Thornton Sentinel and Westminster Window. Metro North editor Scott Taylor, Fortier and Brodsky took second in deadline reporting for their coverage of the memorial service for a slain Adams County deputy.

Among Class 4 weeklies, journalists Alex DeWind, Jessica Gibbs and Nick

Puckett took top honors in public service and series for their “Time to Talk” project, which explored all facets of mental health in Douglas County. First-place awards also were given to DeWind and Gibbs for education, news and health enterprise stories, respectively, that looked at the effects of technology and social media on young people’s emotional intelligence, the growing mental health crisis in jails, and how addiction and mental health are connected.

In the Class 3 weekly category, journalist Ellis Arnold won first place for best series for “No Place to Call Home,” which looked at how Englewood is facing challenges of an increasing homeless population, and first in best health enterprise for a story on the opioid epidemic.

Among Class 1 weeklies, journalist David Gilbert won first place in the series, news story and sustained coverage categories for his exploration of the life and death of a Kiowa man and the complicated legal case of the man arrested in connection with his murder.

Fortier received first-place honors for her photography portfolio among Class 5 weeklies.

Kailyn Lamb, editor for the Denver monthlies Washington Park Profile and Life on Capitol Hill, won first place in sports column writing along with second-place honors for environmental and business reporting.

Karen Earhart, Erin Franks, Tina Meltzer and Lisa Allison won first place for Best Classified Pages or Sections, in addition to several other advertising awards.

In all, CCM garnered 23 first-place and 27 second-place awards in categories that also included headline, design and editorial writing; and business, photography, feature, deadline, environmental, agricultural and sports reporting.
