Making preparations for the G Line opening Ridership service starts April 26

The long-awaited G Line will open to passengers April 26.

“We’re truly pleased to be at this day — it’s been a long road,” said Laurie Huff, spokesperson for the Regional Transportation District.

On April 1, RTD announced the grand opening for the G Line, more than two years after its original opening date.

The G Line is an 11.2-mile electric commuter rail transit line that will connect Denver Union Station to Wheat Ridge, passing through northwest Denver, Adams County and Arvada. There are eight stations: Denver Union Station, 41st/ Fox, Pecos, Federal, Gold Strike, Olde Town Arvada, Arvada Ridge and Ward Road. It is part of RTD’s 2004 voter-approved FasTracks plan to expand transit across the Denver metro region.

Ridership on the G Line has been forecast at 9,000 passenger trips per day during the first year, and at 12,900 daily trips by 2035.

the corner of Grandview and Olde Wadsworth will begin opening at 5:30 a.m. to accommodate early morning G Line riders.

Quiet zones and safety The commuter rail will open with quiet zones in place along the entirety of the line, although horns will continue to be used in emergency situations; if maintenance workers, pedestrians or vehicles are on or near the tracks; if there are issues with gate timing at any of the G Line’s 16 crossings; or if a train must use automatic train control.

“It’s important that people understand for reasons of safety that the operator reserves the right to sound the horn,” Huff said.

Because the train horn won’t be soundingly regularly, Huff said it’s important to note other safety

measure in place such as the crossing gates, red flashing lights, signage and fencing. On occasion, there may also be flaggers present. Huff said the flaggers are there out of precaution and their presence doesn’t signify something is wrong.

Riding the train Local fare of $3 will be required to ride the G Line, which will operate between 4 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., with 15-minute frequency from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and every 30 minutes during off-peak hours. mean riders from throughout the corridor will not have to go all the way to Union Station to change to the other line.

The two-car commuter rail trains on the G Line include 91 seats in each car, two ADA-compliant seating areas, luggage racks, overhead carry-on storage areas, and space for skis and bikes. Trains are designed to travel faster than light rail trains over longer distances, with fewer stops.

Bus changes affected by G Line opening will be implemented in August 2019.

More than a thousand students from Columbine High School will embark on service projects throughout the community on April 20 for the third annual Day of Service.

“We wanted to take such a tragic day and try to turn it into something positive,” Scott Christy, Columbine’s principal, said. “It’s a great way to honor the day, honor the victims.”

In the aftermath of the April 20, 1999 tragedy, community members leaned on one another for hope and strength and were overwhelmed with an outpouring of kindness and support from people across the world.

“It’s hard to articulate in words,” Christy said.

“You kind of have to feel it. A lot of schools or organizations will say they’re a family, but I think at Columbine, it means something different. There is a bond that we have with each other and with our school.

I think there is a pride, a love for

school that I think is very difficult to replicate anywhere else.”

Christy calls it the “Columbine Spirit” — something that bonds the school together.

Currently Columbine High has 13 teachers who were on staff in 1999 and five teachers who were students at Columbine that year. Several long-standing teachers recently retired.

Christy said educators like Frank DeAngelis, former principal, and the teachers who stuck with the school after the tragedy went through difficult times and should be recognized for their heroic actions.

“To stick with something like this and make it into what it is today is truly heroic,” he said. “It’s a model of resiliency.”

Although current students were not yet born when the tragedy struck, it is something that lingers within the culture of the school.

“The kids are aware,” Christy said.

“But they don’t come here thinking this horrible thing happened. This is their home.”

Christy said the story of Columbine High is one of strength, resilience, community and family.

Christy said he hopes other schools

and organizations who have experienced mass shootings and tragedy can look at Columbine and see that they can come back strong if they work as a community.

The Day of Service is one way Columbine High is continuing that strength.

For the first 17 years after the tragedy, school was not held on April 20.

Classes are still not held on that day, but for the past two years, the Day of Service has been.

Service projects vary from sprucing up the garden at the local elementary school to cleaning up nearby Clement Park and local trails. The day is centered on remembering the lives lost, reflecting on the lives forever changed and recommitting to the power of service in the community.

While projects are limited to Columbine High students and teachers, the school encourages the community and people across the world to participate in their own service projects on April 20.

It’s a challenge to make a recommitment — to kindness, to community, to serving others.

“Columbine is a symbol of resiliency,” Christy said.

Tragedy has changed the way area school districts assess and approach threats.

As the home district of Columbine High, the site of what was once the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, Jefferson County Public Schools feels a duty to lead the way in school safety and security, according to John McDonald, executive director of security and emergency management for the distrcit.

“I never, ever forget those that we’ve lost. They’re always in my mind,” McDonald said. “We’ve seen too much tragedy in the district. So, security is a 24-7, 365 operation.”

When reflecting back on Columbine, McDonald said, it “changed the world.”

“Columbine redefined for people what school safety meant and it was the very first time tragedy had ever played out live on TV,” McDonald said.

“So people around the world saw it and they felt connected to it. They watched the tragedy unfold and they could see the anguish. They felt what we had gone though.”

This year will mark 20 years since two teenagers killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High.

It was an event that shook the nation.

“It was a moment where I think the world realized that our kids might not come home,” McDonald said.

Looking for correct protocols After the shock of the tragedy wore off, the school district struggled for years trying to figure out the right approach to school safety and security.

Before McDonald took his post in 2008, six other people held the position.

Approaches ranged from no-tolerance policies to locks, cameras and armed security. Over time, Jeffco learned that threat assessment is an absolute requirement in the approach.

“It’s a recognition that when a student makes a threat, you have to act,” McDonald said. “It’s thinking how can you do an intervention that hopefully allows that child that just made the threat to succeed. We have to protect everyone immediately. And those are real challenges.”

A week after her daughter Lauren Townsend was killed at Columbine, Dawn Anna stood at a memorial event beside her husband, Bruce Beck.

While the speaker said to bow their heads in prayer, Anna said something told her to look up.

She saw a red-tailed hawk circling above, its head cocked, with one eye on the crowd.

“Lauren was there letting us know it was OK,” said Beck, Lauren’s stepfather.

“It was a sign: Keep looking up,” Anna said. “Keep moving ahead.”

In the 20 years since Columbine, Anna and Beck have donated more than $300,000 to animal-related causes through Lauren’s Wildlife Fund, in honor of their daughter who felt a pow-

erful connection to animals.

“Lauren worked at a small animal hospital, and every week she’d come home saying we needed to adopt this dog or that dog,” Beck said.

The fund has given grants to the Keenesburg Wild Animal Sanctuary, the Wildlife Experience and groups that save wolves in Fort Collins, apes in Hawaii, and even raccoons in Minnesota.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the difference she’s made in animals’ lives,” Beck said.

Moving forward hasn’t been easy.

“With Lauren’s loss came a huge hole in my heart,” Anna said. “That hole doesn’t get any smaller, and I don’t expect it to. But my goal is to make my heart bigger, so the hole won’t seem so big. Since losing her I’ve tried to do good deeds, to reach out to others in tragedy. Maybe it’s a little selfish, because I know the more you

give, the more you help yourself.”

Anna said she tries to reach out to others going through trauma and tragedy, but she’s learned there are no words to be said.

After the tragedy at Columbine, Anna said her first visitor was a friend who was known for being a motormouth.

“I thought, ‘please just go away.’ I wasn’t sleeping or eating. Sometimes I’d forget to breathe. If Lauren wasn’t doing it, I didn’t want to do it. But my friend sat next to me. She didn’t say a word. Every now and then, she’d get me a glass of water.”

Anna said it was a great lesson.

“To help others, just sit with them.

There’s not a word you can say that will mean a thing.”

Rick Townsend’s daughter Lauren has been gone for 20 years, and the thoughts still cross his mind.

“I wonder what she’d be like today,” Townsend said. “We lost graduation.

A wedding. Grandkids. Sometimes I just sit and think about it.”

Townsend has devoted himself to keeping the memories of Lauren and the others who died with her in 1999 alive. He’s president of the Columbine Memorial Foundation, which maintains the memorial to the Columbine victims in Clement Park, adjacent to the high school.

“We’re here to remember those that died, support those who were injured, and honor those affected by the shooting,” Townsend said.

The school and the memorial are places of great Townsend importance to Townsend — the memorial as a place of remembrance, but the school as a place of life.

“The school is a vital part of the community,” Townsend said. “It was before this happened, and it still is today. Getting rid of the old library, where so many died, and building the new one made it so the school could

be a valid, highly functioning high school, and not a monument to death and tragedy.”

Townsend said he still struggles to understand.

“I don’t know why these shootings are still happening,” he said. “People think because I lost a child to one I must know something others don’t, but I don’t know any more than they do. There’s the availability of guns, but it’s a multifaceted thing. There’s mental health issues. You can’t solve it by doing any one thing. I don’t have the answers.”

But Townsend does know that he’d like to see a more loving world.

“There’s a need to connect to people.

We can commit to being more kind and accepting and considerate of others. Try to pass that along to others.”

Sean Graves will always carry some of Columbine with him.

Shot several times in the massacre’s first moments, Graves spent three years after the tragedy in a wheelchair.

In 2002, he rolled onto the graduation stage, stood up, took his diploma and walked away.

Graves still struggles to run or climb a ladder without strain.

“I was 15 when I was shot,” Graves said.

“That was 20 years ago.

I’ve lived with these injuries longer than I lived without them.”

Graves still struggles Graves with flashbacks and post-traumatic stress, he said. To this day, he analyzes any room he’s in for exits and people who could be threats.

The years after the tragedy brought darkness and anger, Graves said.

“I couldn’t tell you why it happened,” Graves said. “I wasn’t in the killers’ shoes. But for me, the only way I could move forward without being angry at life or my situation was to forgive them.”

“It was relieving, to be honest.

Once I realized I didn’t have to spend the rest of my life angry at this pair of people, a weight was taken off my chest. I stepped out of the darkness.”

Graves’ wife, Kara, said she is grateful for her husband’s personal growth.

“Without forgiving them, it’s like they won,” Kara said. “They still control your life. We’ve been together 16 years, so I’ve seen him before and after he came to terms with it. It’s definitely improved our quality of life.”

Among the more profound impacts, Kara said, is how they raise their 3-year-old daughter.

“I think 20 years ago this wasn’t at the forefront of anybody’s mind,” Kara said. “Today it’s a way of life.

As kids we did tornado drills. Our daughter will do shooter drills. It’s taken our innocence away.”

Graves said if there’s a silver lining, it’s that his daughter will grow up more aware.

“I kept telling myself it wasn’t real,” he said. “I hope my daughter is smarter. I’ll tell her: If this happens, you have to survive.”

‘Every morning, I wake up and recite their names’ Former Columbine Principal Frank DeAngelis

Frank DeAngelis stuck it out.

DeAngelis was principal of Columbine High School the day of the tragedy in 1999. He stayed in that role until 2014.

“When I retired, I’d been here through the graduation of all the kids who were in elementary school during the tragedy,” DeAngelis said.

Today, DeAngelis is a consultant for Jefferson County Public Schools and a national speaker on recovering from tragedy. He’s thankful his work puts him back in touch with young people.

“I was a teacher, coach and principal for 35 years,” he said. “I missed the kids.”

DeAngelis rejects the accusation that swirled in the aftermath of the attack that Columbine’s culture pushed the killers to violence.

“Was there bullying?

Yes,” he said.

But DeAngelis was one of a select few who viewed the “basement tapes,” lengthy video diaries made by the killers, before they were DeAngelis destroyed.

“In those tapes, they don’t talk about bullying. They talk about feeling godlike. Agents of natural selection. People who will be remembered forever.”

Instead, DeAngelis focuses his heart

on the 13 victims killed in 1999.

“Every morning, I wake up and recite their names,” he said. “I’ll do that until the day I die.”

After 20 years, DeAngelis said, he hopes Columbine serves as a lesson that communities can heal after mass trauma.

“We’ll always remember that horrific day, but Columbine represents hope,” he said. “It’s not an easy road.

There was a phrase that became popular after the tragedy: ‘We Are Columbine.’ And it’s true — we became one.”

‘We see a thousand minds transformed’ Darrell and Sandy Scott, parents of victim Rachel Scott

Rachel Scott’s life ended in 1999, but her spirit of compassion continues to save the lives of others around the world.

Rachel’s parents, Darrell and Sandy Scott, run Rachel’s Challenge, a program that spreads their daughter’s principles of love and understanding far and wide.

“We always miss her, but we get to celebrate her life every day,” Sandy said. “She could’ve lived to be 90 years old and she might not have had this kind of impact. And this is what she wanted: to make a difference in the world. And she’s doing it.”

Rachel’s Challenge had its origins in testimony Darrell gave before Congress a month after Columbine, with a powerful speech that remains popular today.

“By the time I got home, I was invited to 40 major events,” Darrell said. “For two years I traveled to football stadiums, hockey arenas — I spoke in front of tens of thousands of people. We began to realize the impact of Rachel’s story on young lives. We met with educators and began to form

the program.”

The program includes a series of challenges, drawn from Rachel’s diaries, that push kids to rid themselves of prejudice and find compassion for each other.

Today, Rachel’s Challenge has 50 presenters who travel the world speaking to students. Darrell estimates they’ve been in front of 28 million kids.

The numbers may be big, but the effects are personal and intimate.

“We hear from more than 150 kids a year who planned to commit suicide, but changed their minds after our programming,” Darrell said.

Spreading love is a great privilege, Darrell said, though he wishes it drew wider attention from the media.

“We see a thousand minds transformed in one school,” Darrell said.

“Bullies are crying, kids are helping one another, and it gets maybe a blip in the news. Then, somebody says something nasty to someone else, and they’ll get 30 minutes.”

Darell said he takes to heart something Rachel wrote just a month before she died: “Compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer.”

They never stop.

Coni Sanders’ father Dave Sanders was the only teacher killed at Columbine.

To this day, Sanders still gets bombarded with messages from what she calls “Columbiners,” people obsessed with every last detail of the massacre that took her father.

“There are hundreds of social media accounts claiming to be the killers,” Sanders said. “Worse, some claim to be my dad.”

The most disturbing thing, Sanders said, is how many mass shooters turn out to be “Columbiners” themselves.

For Sanders, it’s a clarion call to rethink how our culture, and mass media, approach mass shooters.

“Making them famous is like wrapping up a present and giving it to them,” she said.

Sanders is under no delusion that eliminating notoriety will stop mass shootings.

“Anybody with half a brain knows we’ll never be able to stop this,” she said. “It’s about reducing it, and there’s no one answer… It’s like a thousandpiece puzzle, but if we start putting it together we’ll see better results.”

Sanders said she’s frustrated by what she calls a lack of action on gun violence.

“It’s unbelievable to me that people’s

beliefs outweigh their loved one’s lives.”

After her father’s death, Sanders became a forensic therapist, working with people released from prison for violent crimes, to help them chart a safer path in life.

“Right after it happened, I wondered: What happened to those two boys? I found out they did get mental health treatment. They were in a diversion program. And now I work with that program.”

Sanders said she’s not sure her work gives her any insight into Columbine specifically, but said we can all help make the world safer.

“Violence prevention is smiling at someone you normally wouldn’t,” she said. “Saying hi to someone. Striking up a conversation. The people I work with, when they’re violent, it’s when they feel left out, alone or wronged.”

Sanders said she doesn’t hold ill will over her father’s death, though she spent years angry at him for repeatedly running back into the school, braving gunfire to secure classrooms full of panicked students.

“But if he could come back, I think he’d tell us he’d do it again,” she said.

After 20 years, Sanders said, it’s high time we shift our thinking.

“This is no longer about what happened on April 20,” she said. “This is about how we have fewer April 20ths.

We’re all in danger, but we have love and hope we can focus on.”

Spreading love, support in tragedy Sandy Austin, Jeffco Public Schools school counselor

Sandy Austin was a school counselor at Jefferson High in 1999. A few years before, she completed her student teaching across the district at Columbine High. So when the call came on April 20 asking for mental health professionals throughout Jeffco schools to respond, she jumped.

“My heart was there,” Austin said. “Even if I wasn’t anymore.”

She remembers the chaos surrounding the school.

“It was like there was Austin an atmosphere hanging over that area,” she recalled.

Austin was one of many mental health professionals to provide counseling to families of Columbine High students and families in the hours

after the tragedy unfolded.

She remembers two families who had to go home that night without being reunited with their children.

“They had to go home that night wondering if their children were shot,” she said.

In the days, weeks and months that followed, Austin spent hours upon hours at various community sites and schools counseling people who had been impacted by the events.

“Dave Sanders, I had student taught with him,” Austin said. “Dave was such a caring person. So I thought, whatever I can do to help out, I will.”

Sanders, a teacher and coach at Columbine, died in the shooting.

One of the most powerful things Austin remembers from counseling that summer was four posters hanging in the cafeteria at Ken Caryl Middle School. One was from an elementary school in Japan. Kids had traced around their hands and written their

“The more and more tragedies we’ve had have really provided a laser focus,” McDonald said. “The work that I do is really about preparedness and response.”

Following the deadly shooting at Columbine, Safe2Tell, an anonymous way for students, parents, school staff and community members to report concerns regarding their safety or the safety of others, emerged as a needed resource. Safe2Tell went live in 2004 following the passing of a new information sharing law and an investment by The Colorado Trust, a nonprofit assisting other programs.

The statewide program is founded on the idea that prevention and early intervention are key to preventing violence and saving lives.

Research from the U.S. Secret Service and U.S. Department of Education shows that in 81 percent of violent incidents in U.S. schools, someone other than the attacker knew it was going to happen but failed to report it.

During the 2017-18 school year Safe2Tell received a total of 16,000 tips throughout Colorado. In comparison to the 2016-2017 school year, there was a 74 percent increase in the overall number of tips received. Since 20122013, Safe2Tell consistently receives suicide threats as the highest concern reported, followed by drugs and bullying each month.

“It’s remarkable the increase we’re seeing,” McDonald said, adding that the program, which started as a way to call in threats of harm to someone else has evolved.

“We’ve saved lives many times over with that program.”

McDonald said the district’s partnership with local law enforcement agencies is crucial to the success of safety and security in schools. Jeffco schools partners with eight different law enforcement agencies.

“The stuff we’re doing together, I’m incredibly proud of it,” McDonald said. “I wish there was a way to articulate to the community how big of a deal it is and how much constant effort everybody puts into it.”

Constantly preparing McDonald said that as a district, one of the reasons they are successful in the school security realm now is because they aren’t afraid to talk about their failure.

“What I see happening around the country is schools start looking inward instead of outward and they don’t share their failures,” McDonald

names in the middle of their palm and sent it to the students of Columbine.

She asked one student what the posters meant to her. The response stuck with Austin.

“She said they appreciate what the community has done, but the posters mean more than anything because it’s people their age, students that are reaching out saying, `we care,’” Austin recalled. “She said it’s like a huge hug that’s coming around us during this time.”

The hug in those posters is something Austin replicates 20 years later with her B.I.O.N.I.C. team, which stands for Believe It Or Not I Care.

Austin launched the group in 2002 following four student suicides at Green Mountain High in Lakewood, where she was working at the time. The school club expanded throughout the district and is now its own nonprofit.

B.I.O.N.I.C. has a school tragedy team that sends posters to schools experiencing tragedy to spread love.

“Whenever we hear of a tragedy in another school, we will do a big poster

like that,” Austin said. “The stories we’ve heard from those posters are powerful.”

Now a counselor at Pomona High in Arvada, Austin said she sees students are both callous and hyper-aware when in comes to school shootings.

“These kids in school now have only known school shootings,” Austin said, “That’s what they’ve known all their lives. It’s sad the innocence is gone.”

As an adult in a school setting, Austin said she is constantly looking for warning signs.

“When I’m walking into a room, I’m looking around to see if anyone looks strange,” Austin said. “I’m always paying attention to see if anyone doesn’t seem to fit, always looking for kids that are down. It’s being aware of surroundings.”

Austin said it’s important to know the signs of post-traumatic stress and when to ask for help.

“You have to deal with the tragedy, that trauma,” Austin said. “Even if you think you’re strong, you have to deal with it.”

McDonald said following 1999, Columbine became the “poster child” for school shootings and while law enforcement agencies quickly changed how they respond to an active threat worldwide, school districts “had to be dragged kicking and screaming.”

“More shootings were happening before people really started paying attention,” McDonald said. “The problem is educators think the best of everyone — they are non-confrontational and they want to see all students succeed.

But in law enforcement, we look at attack behavior all day long.”

One way Jeffco schools is correcting that is by bringing a principal onto their safety and security team.

By doing this, they are hoping to cross-educate — bringing the education lens into security and the security vision to educators.

“There’s an expectation and people expect that we’re doing it bigger and better because of what we’ve gone through,” McDonald said of safety and security in Jeffco schools. “I think for us, at least for me, I feel a duty to protect our kids and our staff.”

One way Jeffco is doing this is through the Frank DeAngelis Center for Community Safety — named after former Columbine High School Principal Frank DeAngelis — which opened in the Martensen Elementary School building in Wheat Ridge in April 2017.

The facility closed to students in 2011 and now serves school districts and law enforcement agencies throughout the country as a training center to prepare for active-shooter situations, learn crisis-prevention techniques in a real-school environment and use a simulator that offers interactive training for a variety of school threat scenarios.

A way to give back The center was the brainchild of McDonald, and last year, almost 60 agencies and more than 6,000 officers trained there. It is currently booked through February 2020. For McDonald, not only is this a way to share knowledge, but it’s also a way to give back to local law enforcement.

“I wanted a place for law enforcement and school safety to train,” McDonald said. “I wanted a way for them to be better at responding. But I didn’t expect what happened to happen.”

Now, thanks to various grants, the center will be adding more technology to better aid those training there.

A virtual shoot house, additional video screens and a video system will allow agencies to look back and replay their actions. A new audio system will recreate sounds of guns firing, kids screaming and crying, suspects yelling and alarms going off. A scent machine will expel smells of gunpowder and other explosives, urine and additional odors founds in an active shooter environment.

“We want a realistic environment for our first responders so that when they come in, they know who they’re fighting for,” McDonald said. “They know who they’re training to fight for.”

McDonald said the shootings at Columbine and Deer Creek Middle along with the kidnapping and murder of Jessica Ridgeway in 2012, and Vince Nett, who set himself on fire at Standley Lake High in 2014, are always with him.

“These tragedies, they are always in the back of our mind,” McDonald said. “It’s a constant reminder.

We’re always working to look at our response and how do we get better at preventing it. There is not a single piece of this whole department that doesn’t have some significant piece of it created because of a tragedy.”

Arvada supporting tollway to the tune of $2 million More funds for Jefferson Parkway approved 5-1

The proposed Jefferson Parkway is proceeding towards becoming a reality, and one Jeffco municipality just provided significant funding to help it along.

At an April 1 Arvada City Council meeting, a vote to provide $2 million of funding for the proposed parkway passed 5-to-1. Councilmember Nancy Ford voted no and Councilmember Mark McGoff was absent.

The Jefferson Parkway “is going to happen,” said Councilmember Bob Fifer. “It’s just (a matter of) how do we shape it and how do we evolve it into something that doesn’t divide a community but hopefully builds a community.”

The Jefferson Parkway is a proposed toll road intended to stretch from State Highway 128 in Broomfield and State Highway 93 near West 58th Avenue, north of Golden.

The Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority (JPPHA) is made up of representatives from Jefferson County, the city and county of Broomfield and

the city of Arvada. The JPPHA board also has two non-voting members — representatives from the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and the Regional Air Quality Council.

The JPPHA or its members control all but about a 1/2 acre of the property needed for the right of ways, said Bill Ray, executive director of the JPPHA. He added that negotiations are currently taking place with the owner of the property needed.

When the JPPHA formed in May 2008, the voting member governments each gave $100,000 for initial startup funding. In 2016, each governmental agency agreed to contribute a reimbursable $400,00 each — a total of $1.2 million — in both 2017 and 2018, Ray said.

The authority’s earlier timelines have construction of the parkway starting as early as 2020. Once the toll road is open, Ray said that the authority members like Arvada will begin to see some of the road revenue.

“There are intergovernmental agreements between the authority and each of its members documenting the funds, staff time and value of land being advanced to the authority,” Ray said, “which will be reimbursed over SEE TOLLWAY, P22

Others, such as masonry work or auto mechanics need only to go through a trade school that caters to the specific field. This turns into a certification of completion rather than an expensive degree at a university. The costs difference in education is huge.

Job satisfaction: There is a certain sense of pride in getting your hands dirty and building, creating or maintaining something.

According to a 2018 Harris Poll, which surveyed blue-collar workers across the nation, 86 percent said they are satisfied/happy with their jobs.

Of Jeopardy, life lessons and ringing in

here are numerous idioms about being present in life, that the secret to success, to happiness, to lifelong bliss is to just show up. There is wisdom is this, I suppose, because we can certainly snooze our way through the years. But that what we really need to aim for is stepping up and ringing in.

I’m taking this lesson from Jeopardy, of course.

I missed my chance to be on Jeopardy again this month, though. Between work and writing commitments, I wasn’t able to take the online test. In a bit of optimism, I did register, but when the online test was available, I just couldn’t make it. I never even found time for the practice test.

Mind you, I’m not saying, even if I somehow squeaked by with an acceptable score on the test, that I would ever advance in the process. Of the people who do score well

enough, only those selected in a random lottery – which would take about a year – are ever contacted. From these, even fewer are invited to audition, which still doesn’t mean you get on the show, after about another year.

Of course, it does happen, and Colorado and the Denver metro area have been well represented recently. A friend of mine also competed a year or so ago, and she was well positioned going into the final round. Although she didn’t win that day, she was pretty darn impressive and I am pretty darn proud of her.

Many of us have probably – many times, probably – thought, “Hey, maybe I could do that,” whether it’s conquering a tricky face on a rock climb, or placing those last stitches in an intricate quilt pattern, or achieving a diploma or an assignment or an accomplishment of any kind that at one time had seemed just out of reach.

Important climate details I’d like to respond to the Letter to the Editor from the March 28th issue regarding climate change. As a community member who has a master’s degree in atmospheric science and spent nearly a decade studying weather and climate, I feel an obligation to inform the readers of some important details that were missing from the previous letter. While it is true that climate change has a natural, albeit slow-moving, variable, the writer failed to mention anthropogenic (humancaused) influences, such as the increase in greenhouse gases following the industrial revolution. The American Meteorological Society’s report on climate change concludes, “It is clear from extensive scientific evidence that the dominant cause of the rapid change in climate of the past half century is human-induced

increases in the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, CFCs, methane, and nitrous oxides.”

However, my question to the readers is this – when a dentist informs a patient of a cavity, why do we believe them? Because they went to dental school and have years of training. Why do we trust teachers to teach our children? Because they received an education specifically for this task. So why is it when 97% of actively published climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are “extremely likely due to human activity,” people don’t believe them?

I beg the readers to trust the experts trained in this field and to realize that “all the hullabaloo about climate change” is warranted.

That’s sort of how I feel about Jeopardy.

Yes, I can shout out answers in my living room with the best of ’em (not in question format, however), likely because I can read the clues really fast and – this is key – I don’t have to beat anybody to the buzzer. In other words, I don’t have to ring in.

In the actual on-the-set TV game, knowledge (deep and wide and specific knowledge) is only one part of three needed to succeed.

To me, wagering and ringing in are as important as the right answers.

Strategic maneuvering is also a part of wagering, and has been on exquisite display in the last week or so. James – who has all that knowledge I mentioned, and more – is still on the show as of this writing, and is the largest single-day dollar-value winner in Jeopardy history.

Not only did she answer my initial question in a timely way, but she called me — unsolicited — a couple days later to give me a heads up about a special opportunity. And then, when Bomb Cyclone 2.0 reared its ugly head, she called me again to make sure that I had seen an email that the Rapids sent out to make sure that the opportunity was still available. Through it all, she was pleas-

ant and professional. And, most importantly, she made my son’s day when I was able to show him the tickets I scored for the RapidsArsenal friendly this July. Hats off, Sarah!

Maxine Lee Henderson Brown, a retired teacher, died Saturday morning in Arvada at age 97.

Maxine was the youngest of the seven children of Burr Henderson and Harriette Williams.

She graduated from the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Music and Butler University and was inducted into the Mu Phi Epsilon honor society. Maxine married Cleo Brown in 1944 and they reared four sons. Brown taught school in Indiana, Texas, Idaho, and Colorado before retiring from the Westminster Public Schools. Mrs. Brown is fondly remem-

bered by many of her former students who now range from 36 to 94 years in age. An early feminist and advocate for civil rights and social justice, Maxine was a compassionate, brilliant, determined, and fiercely independent woman. She survived her husband, sons Joseph and David, and granddaughter Avis. Brown is survived by her sons Stephen of Arvada and Douglas of Houston, eleven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Westminster Public Schools Foundation.

Richard Clare (Ricky) Mote Ricky Mote, 65, the great grandson of an early Arvada Settler, died Friday, March 22, at his home in Arvada, Colorado. His great grandfather, John Waters Hooper, arrived in the Ralston area in 1885.

Ricky was born June 15, 1953, in Denver, Colorado, to Richard and JoAnne (Simpson) Mote. He graduated from Arvada High School in 1971, he was Valedictorian, Class President, and Band Chair.

His employment included Construction, Heavy Equipment Operation,

City of Arvada and Rocky Flats until his retirement. He was a good friend to many and very proud of his family.

Surviving are his wife Jenelle Mote; his five sons Chris Rabe and his wife, Becky Rabe, Michael Mote and his wife, Jessica Mote, James Mote, Drew Mote, and Jack Mote; a sister Kerry Mote and a brother Steve Mote; five grandchildren Bailey Rabe, Heidi Rabe, Chloe Rabe, August Rabe, and Kaden Mote.

At his request, no funeral services were held. He was buried in the Arvada Cemetery.

s the tide of bland, boxy apartment complexes rolls through metro Denver amid its housing boom, sightseers looking for a respite need not roam far.

Historic buildings offer a change of pace from “empty architecture,” said Stephen Leonard, a history professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

“We get a lot of variety from historical architecture that we have,” said Leonard, a widely known voice on Colorado history who has taught at MSU for five decades. “I think our sensibility, our ability to appreciate differences and to understand beauty would be considerably lessened if we didn’t have the variety of some very fine architecture we have in Denver.”

Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, Leonard said, “We shape our buildings, and then our buildings shape us.”

“I think they tell us a lot about the tastes of the period. You look at the flamboyance of Victorian architecture, which is really sort of a grabbag term for the 1860s-90s,” Leonard said. “Those buildings combine different styles. They sort of reflect the exuberance of a nouveau riche class.

There’s not much restraint in them.”

Curious eyes can find styles from that era and beyond around the Denver region. Here’s a look at a few buildings still standing.

Westminster Bell Tower In 1986, the City of Westminster wanted to celebrate its 75th birthday with a “grand public monument,” according to city spokeswoman Jodie Carroll.

The city decided to incorporate it into the design of the new city hall, which was set to open in 1988.

The tower’s design, including the pyramid at the top, were taken from Big Ben. The city wasn’t named for the area in London, though: The area’s original name, Harris Park, was changed in the early 1900s to honor Westminster University, which was where the Belleview Christian School building now stands, Carroll said. That’s just a few minutes southeast of the bell tower.

The tower stands at 4800 W. 92nd Ave. in Westminster.

he Denver Art Museum has been growing in scope and national recognition at rapid pace, especially in recent years. But there’s one area in which the museum hasn’t changed in more than half a century - its collection of European old masters.

That all changed with the recently unveiled Treasures of British Art: The Berger Collection, an exhibition showcasing about 60 paintings that were gifted to the museum by the Berger Collection Educational COMING in 2018.

ATTRACTIONS Trust “This is the largest collection of old master paintings we’ve received in the 1950s,” said Christoph Heinrich, Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the DAM. “It’s an important moment for the Clarke Reader museum that the trust decided to give these paintings a permanent home here. This will allow us to work with, research and learn more about these paintings and the artists.”

Exhibition curator and scholar Kathleen Stuart has been working with the paintings for about 12 years and described the collection as a journey through 500 years of British history.

The collection goes as far back as the 1400s through the late 1800s and includes a variety of subjects, styles and artists. There is just one female painter in the collection (Royal Academy founder Angelica Kauffman) and several works painted by non-British artists who spent significant time in Britain.

There are a few survivors from Britain’s Catholic age, before Henry VIII broke with the Roman Church. England’s most famous king is also represented with a rare portrait from 1513 that remain in its original wooden frame. There are also portraits of the elite and middle class, the genesis of landscape painting and reflections of the island nation’s ever-expanding empire.

According to information provided the museum, the Treasures of British Art exhibit is the first time since 1999 so many works from the Berger Collection are on view.

“This exhibit provides a view into the British culture these artists created and who owned their work,” Stuart said. “This gift really enhances the DAM enormously.

Highlands Ranch Mansion A small farmhouse built in 1891 eventually became the Highlands Ranch Mansion, a public property surrounded by historic barns, ranch houses, corrals and pastures.

“Through the years, each owner expanded the residence, adding their own style,” said Sherry Eppers, spokeswoman for the Highlands Ranch Metro District. “The unique details from different architectural periods can be found on both the exterior and interior of the building.”

The mansion was a residence until the late 1970s, and many Denver-area socialites called it home, Eppers said. Today, it’s a gathering place for ycelebrations, weddings and private events. The property was conveyed to the metro district in 2010.

“The mansion is a link to Colorado’s rich history,” Eppers said. “Residents enjoy learning about the history of the mansion’s families and the tradition of ranching in the area.”

The 70-acre campus at 3001 S. Federal Blvd. was once a Catholic college. First named Loretto Heights Academy, it grew out of an effort by the Sisters of Loretto dating back to the late 1800s. Its reddish-brown administration building with a tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The campus became Teikyo Loretto Heights University in 1989 and Colorado Heights University in 2009. Concerned about the historical value of the campus and its future, several local residents held meetings throughout 2017, and meetings were also held in 2018 and this January.

The developer who bought the property from the university, Westside Investment Partners, has announced it will renovate Pancratia Hall on the campus — once home to a dormitory — into affordable housing units, according to a January news release.

Westside has also said it is committed to preserving the administration building, the adjoining chapel and the cemetery, where dozens of nuns were interred.

Jefferson County government building First called “a veritable Taj Mahal” by detractors who opposed the county’s spending on the expensive

building, the Jefferson County Administration and Courts Facility is now known lovingly by county employees as “the Taj,” according to Ronda Frazier, county archivist.

The county needed a new building amid population growth. Between 1972 and 1990, the courts’ caseload increased by almost 500 percent, and services had to be scattered throughout the county, Frazier said.

“The new building provided space for almost all of the county’s operations and was designed to provide services to citizens all in one location,” Frazier said.

The large, dome-anchored building at 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden opened in 1993, with architecture meant to mesh with the surrounding landscape. The wheat-colored brick matches the clay in nearby terrain, and the maroon granite used was inspired by the soil and indigenous sandstone, Frazier said.

“It was designed to reflect the life and architecture of the county’s namesake, Thomas Jefferson,” Frazier said. “The central atrium of the building was styled after the rotunda Jefferson designed for the University of Virginia and also the Jefferson Memorial rotunda in Washington, D.C.” But its most interesting aspect for Frazier is its butterfly-like shape when viewed from above, and its curved “wings” makes it appear smaller than it is.

The building “was designed by the architects to create a focal point,” Frazier said, “for what is a big, diverse governmental organization.”

Founded in 2013, the group raises money to benefit nonprofits which are doing good things for the people who live in Arvada. Since then, AVA has awarded $123,000 to 34 organization including local schools, Epic Experience, Ralston House, Bessie’s Hope and one public art project.

For the third year, AVA will gather bring together nonprofits and community members at its annual Celebrating Community event April 27. Six nonprofits have been selected to pitch to event attendees, who will select winners of grant money. Each nonprofit featured is guaranteed $1,000.

“It is so exciting to see how the Arvada Vitality Alliance is creatively and successfully connecting members of the community with local nonprofits,” said Lisa Steven, founder and executive director of Hope House of Colorado, one of the featured nonprofits.

With grant funds, the gardeners hope to create a more effective and efficient compost.

AWRSAY is a program that recognizes students in middle and high

school that have overcome significant challenges. High school seniors receive a scholarship to Red Rocks Community College.

“It’s a program that has been a favorite of ours because it addresses the economic disparity in our community,” Dyer said.

AWRSAY has participated in the event since it began. So has Family Tree, which provides services designed to end child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness.

Colorado Homeless Families will be participating in the event for the first time this year. The organization served

ccording to a study recently released by Fannie Mae, more baby boomer retirees have mortgage debt than those retirees who were born between 1931 and 1935.

With less outgo comes a sigh of relief, as retirees may be able to delay taking social security until age 70, pay off high interest credit card debt, allow time for the retirement portfolio to grow, and find a myriad of other

uses for tax-free proceeds of a reverse mortgage.

by HUD have reduced the amount of mortgage insurance paid annually from 1.25% to .5%.

TOLLWAY Arvada opposition Not all Arvada residents are happy with the parkway’s progress.

About 140 homes in the Leyden Rock community of Arvada will be immediately adjacent to the proposed tollway’s right of way, only about 60-to-140 feet distance from it, said Jeffrey Staniszewski, group leader for the neighborhood group, Movement To Stop Jefferson Parkway.

Staniszewski has lived in Leyden Rock for about two years. He said loss of home value because of the tollway is the least serious concern for most of the residents in the Leyden Rock community.

“There are no definitive plans for emergency services (access) or how children would be protected” from playing

too close to the highway, Staniszewski said.

Others oppose the construction of the Jefferson Parkway because of its proximity to Rocky Flats. The roadway cuts along the eastern edge of the old Cold War weapons site, raising concerns about plutonium particles being stirred up into the dust during construction work.

“The danger is when you breathe it in,” said Bonnie Graham-Reed, referring to plutonium, who has lived in Arvada for 40 years. The Jefferson Parkway “will most certainly stir up dust that has plutonium particles in it.”

Supporters of the new tollway say the area’s growth around Leyden Rock and Candelas is one of the things making the new road a necessity.

“It would do all of the citizens a dis-service if we didn’t follow through with it because the roads are not going to get fixed — Indiana, 64, Highway 72, Highway 93,” Fifer said at the April 1 meeting. “We cannot depend on CDOT or the state to come and save the day for these issues” of transportation funding.

WHEAT RIDGE — It’s pretty clear every time senior pitcher Aaron Arcilise takes the hill for Wheat Ridge’s baseball team he gives the Farmers a great chance of grabbing a victory.

“I haven’t seen all of 4A, but the way we can play (defense) and the way he pitches, I’d put him up against anybody,” Wheat Ridge coach Adam Miller said of the Farmers’ ace. “He can throw any pitch in the count. He strikes out a bunch and we play good defense. That is the right formula.”

Wheat Ridge (4-3 record) used those right ingredients April 9 to take a 5-1 home victory over Arvada West. The Farmers manufactured a single run in the first and third innings using a pair of sacrifice bunts by sophomore Wes Miller, followed by RBI singles by junior Dominic Bronk to take a 2-0 lead.

Arcilise was nearly unhittable through seven innings. He finished with 10 strikeouts, while giving up just two hits to grab his fourth victory on the hill. The hard-throwing righty has given up just two runs and six hits while striking out 48 batters in 26 innings so far this season.

“They give me the confidence to throw any pitch in any count,” Arcilise said of the Farmers’ defense.

“I know these guys have my back 100 percent.”

A-West (5-7) scored its lone run with an RBI double by senior Liam Spaw in the top of the fourth inning that trimmed the Farmers’ lead to 2-1.

of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 5-1. Junior Kyle Radi’s RBI single drove in senior Anthony Tate, who doubled to lead off the inning.

A pick-off attempt of junior Sammy Stahl at first base sailed wild. Stahl was off and running on the error. He eventually scored when a throw to third base got away.

“We aren’t the Wheat Ridge team of 2007,” Coach Miller said of the Farmers having to utilize ‘small ball’ to produce runs. “But we are as good a defensive team as we have ever had and Arcilise is as good as anyone we’ve had on the bump.”

The Farmers have a handful of basketball players that helped Wheat Ridge to its first conference hoops title since 2007.

“After coming off basketball (4A Jeffco League title) the school is running with the mojo,” Bronk said. “We are looking good.”

Wheat Ridge was scheduled to start conference play Saturday, April 13, at Littleton, but weather and field conditions postponed the game. The Farmers could play five games in six days this week, including four league games — two each against Littleton and D’Evelyn. The league formate is a little different with home-and-away games against the same team two days apart in 4A Jeffco.

“Expectations are definitely high for us,” Arcilise said about 4A Jeffco play.

“We expect to win every single game.

We expect to be the league champs, but that doesn’t come without hard work and putting in the time to be good enough to beat all those teams.”

One downer for the Farmers is

“We do have some depth pitching, but we are young,” Coach Miller said.

“We are going to have to see how things shake out.”

Workers compare old wounds of the Cold War Former Rocky Flats workers gather for breakfast event

HEALTH IMPACTED BY WORKING AT ROCKY FLATS? The Energy Employee Occupational Illness Program Act (EEOICPA) came into fruition in 2001. It provides benefits to employees of the Department of Energy and its contractors and subcontractors who are sick from radiation exposure, or exposure to other toxins. Nuclear Care Partners guides former atomic workers through EEOICPA benefits, and it offers no-cost in home care.

Former employees of the Rocky Flats Plant gathered together on April 10 in Denver, for the Building Trades Unions Breakfast. Put on by Nuclear Care Partners, an organization that provides Energy Employee Occupational Illness Program Act (EEOICPA) benefits guidance and no-cost in home care to former atomic workers, the event gave former Rocky Flats workers a chance to learn about benefits and to meet with other workers.

Rocky Flats, which is located 16 miles northwest of downtown Denver, produced nuclear weapons parts for nearly 40 years. According to the state of Colorado, over 8,000 chemicals were used as well as radioactive materials. Weapon production stopped in 1989.

Here is what some former employees of Rocky Flats had to say about working at the plant.

Glenn Link Glenn Link worked as a pipe fitter apprentice for Dow Chemical, one of Rocky Flats’ plant operators, from 1968 to 1972. When he reflects on his time at the site, Link says it was a good job. His father worked there his whole life and never got sick from exposure to chemicals and radiation, but Link did.

Glenn Link worked at Rocky Flats from 1968 to 1972. Link has skin cancer, something he says was caused from radiation exposure at the plant.

that he had an “enormous” amount of skin cancer — something he says was a direct result from radiation exposure out on Rocky Flats. Employees would wear dosimeter badges, a material used to record the amount of radiation exposure a person has over a period of time.

“At that time every month, they would take your old (dosimeter) badge, read it and give you a new badge and tell you everything is fine.

They went back and read the badges from that era, and the exposure was 10 times what it should’ve been,” said Link, who also has been exposed to asbestos.“When they gave me the

Clyde Christman Clyde Christman worked at Rocky Flats for 21 years where he worked different jobs, including as a radiological control technician. His job required him to make sure people didn’t get exposed to elevated levels of radiation and to monitor for contamination.

He said enjoyed his job, and if he could still work there, he would.

Christman says he would catch some Rocky Flats employees walking in areas without their respirator mask.

When he reminded some of them to wear their masks, they would hold their nose, violating safety rules.

“I saw that a number of times.

People can become complacent,” said

Christman. He is 66, and he considers himself to be healthy. “You can’t see the contamination, or smell it, so you develop a sense of complacency.”

Rod Williams “It was one of the safest places to work, but they didn’t know what we were working with,” said Rod Williams, a pipe fitter at Rocky Flats. In some instances, when some of the employees would get rid of waste, they didn’t know what they were working with, because the instruments they used couldn’t detect the radioactive waste.

Williams went back and forth working at the site for years, and today says he deals with health issues as a result of his job. He declined to discuss specifics.

“I felt if you followed the precautions, you were good — but any job has its point where precautions are good to take, but things happen,” said Williams.
