Charter, private schools navigate weeks of online learning Schools maintain their individuality, community despite change in plans

Up until March 2020, Golden-based charter school Golden View Classical Academy relied on a mostly analog approach to education, said principal Robert Garrow.

And when the school decided to transition to remote learning and instruction in response to the spread of COVID-19, that meant taking everything online for the first time.

In a matter of days, the school set up email accounts for every student, set up Google Classroom accounts for every teacher and ensured all students had devices to use at home, with some families donating computers to the cause.

“To move online was a very steep move, and we really turned it around in a weekend,” Garrow said.

As opposed to many of its neighbors, the academy, established through the Barney Charter School Initiative, is not a neighborhood school in a larger school district. While the school has been able to look to nearby districts’ approach to remote learning, the vast majority of the process has fallen on the school’s shoulders.

Other area charter and private schools have found themselves in a similar situation, with each finding a way to tackle the turnaround and see their families through the end of the school year.

At Faith Christian Academy in Arvada, the adaptation has been a process of expanding what the school already has in place. Every year, the private school oversees at least one day of remote learning through which students go online to complete a day of school from home. The school uses the same method whenever it has to make up a snow day or cancellation, said Superintendent Andrew Hasz, and its freedom to do so as a private school has made Faith slightly more prepared to handle the current situation.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MICAH GILBREATH “It’s a lot different for one day versus weeks and months,” he said, however, “we’re coming together and we’ve set up a good system.”

Meredith Meyering, who has a middle schooler and a high schooler at Faith, said the prior online experience made the transition easier for her family.

“They would agree they learn better listening in class, but content-wise, they do feel like they’re covering the same amount they would be,” she said. “And the teachers have been very merciful as we’re figuring things out.”

Additionally, the staff has worked to address the most common issues students and parents are facing.

For families in need of technical help, the school’s technical support team has been making house calls to help resolve issues. For subjects that are particularly difficult for students to understand on their own, like math, Meyering’s daughter’s teacher has been available by text message or video chat to answer questions. For students who are missing the social aspect of school, each class holds a weekly video chat over Zoom to allow students to talk to one another.

“The kids can see how much work the teachers are putting into all of this,” Meyering said. “I think they feel as part of the school as they can as far away as they are.”

its approach based on families’ needs, “we do keep in contact with Jeffco Schools, because everybody’s going through the same things,” Hasz said.

“And we have a lot of talks with other Christian schools so we can all learn from each other.”

Other schools, like Lincoln Academy in Arvada — a charter authorized

by Jeffco Public Schools — have been following the district’s lead more closely as they navigate these remote learning weeks.

“The district gave us a really good framework and we have made it work for our community,” said principal Janelle Johnson. “They’ve done a fabulous job and I know if there’s something we needed, we could reach out and ask.”

At the same time, Johnson and her staff have had the ability to be flexible to help families, whether that means extending attendance deadlines or changing assignment due dates. She also highlighted the school’s many resources available for struggling families, including resources for families in need of food and mental health resources,all listed on the school’s webpage.

As the weeks go on, teachers have also become more committed to posting videos and holding video chats, she said.

It’s activities like that,” Johnson said. “They’re finding multiple ways to teach.”

Parents like Micah Gilbreath, who has sons in first and fifth grade at Lincoln, note that staff has also worked to ensure families feel close together — even though, because the charter is not a neighborhood school, families geographically may be far apart.

“Right now, my boys are doing PE through a Facebook Live chat, and our art teacher has done the same thing.

It’s fun and involved,” she said. “The teachers have just been a lifeline for our kids to know they’re safe. This will be something that sticks with our families and I think it’s going to be for the greater good, in time.”

Many charters and private schools like Faith, Golden View Classical and Lincoln have announced that remote learning will continue for the rest of the school year.

Looking to the coming weeks, the schools are hopeful that they will be able to maintain the unique aspects that draw students to their schools in the first place.

“Classical education really prioritizes conversations, so anything that detracts from that really makes it more difficult,” Garrow said, “but we’re happy to do the best we can, and I think we’re doing well.”

Jeffco high school graduations postponed until August STAFF REPORT

With May graduation ceremonies canceled because of the pandemic, Jeffco high schools are organizing to hold graduations in August instead.

An April 10 announcement from the school district outlined an overall plan for each school to reschedule graduation while also creating a graduation acknowledgment to be shared with their communities at the end of May. “This acknowledgment will take a form determined by each individual school in collaboration with their seniors and staff,” the district announcement said.

The May ceremonies will be postponed to one of four dates, August 7, 8, 14 and 15, assuming that social distancing guidelines and restrictions have been lifted by then. Jeffco may schedule additional dates to accommodate its large number of schools if necessary.

Charter schools also may choose to reschedule or change their graduations and will share this information with their school communities.

If a stay-at-home order is in place on the planned August dates, the high schools will postpone their ceremonies for later dates, the announcement said.

“Specific dates, times and locations

for each school are still being determined,” it said. “Information will be shared with families and graduating seniors as soon as it is known,” with the district planning to finalize details

by April 17 and communicate plans shortly after.

“We know this news is disappointing for our families with graduates, as well as for our high school teachers and staff, and most especially for our graduating seniors,” the announcement said. “We are proud of each of these wonderful students and are committed to recognizing their achievements as we are able in these unusual circumstances.”

The Rule Against Showings & Open Houses Shouldn’t Hamper Your Home-Buying...

… that is, if the listing agent does what Golden Real Estate has done for over 13 years — create a narrated walk-through video of each listing.

Our narrated video tours are just like a showing. They are live action videos which start in front of the house (just like a real showing) and then go through the house and into the back yard, talking all the time.

Check out the video tours for each of the two listings featured on this page to see what I mean. They really are like an in-person showing with the listing agent. For example, the video camera points down to the floor and up to the ceiling as I describe the hardwood floor or the sun tunnels which bring natural light into the home’s interior.

But, you say, you’re not going to buy a home that you can’t see in person.

Right? That is still true, because the rules allow for inspection once the home is under contract. Your visit (with an agent) the next day constitutes an inspection. That’s before you even have to deliver your earnest money check.

I’m not being cute or bending the rules. The inspection provision in the standard contract to buy and sell a home makes no mention of having to hire an inspector or how many inspection visits you are entitled to prior to the inspection objection deadline.

So, let’s say you look at the video tour of the patio home below or the ranch-

style luxury home at right. I guarantee you’ll have a pretty good sense of the home from viewing the video. You’ll know the flow from kitchen to dining room, to family room, to back yard, etc., because you are being walked through the home.

It is not a slideshow of different rooms, which gives no indication of flow from one to the other.

Let’s say you call me or your agent to submit a contract. The contract has a 7- to 10-day inspection period. You go under contract and schedule your personal inspection with your agent (or me, if unrepresented) the next day, before delivering your earnest money check. You can terminate immediately if you have buyer’s remorse, and go back to looking at other houses.

If you don’t terminate, you still have a week to hire a professional inspector and submit a detailed inspection objection.

What if you’re a buyer, and there’s no such video for a house that interests you? You’ve got three choices here.

One, your agent (me, for example) could request a narrated video from the listing agent. Second, I could preview the home for you since no mention is made of banning previews, and shoot my own roughcut video tour of the home, post it as an “unlisted” video on YouTube and send you the link. Or, third and perhaps best, we could use Facetime, Zoom, or another app to have you see what I’m seeing as I walk you through the house.

ient not to have an in-person showing of a listed home, there are work-arounds that can make it possible to get under contract and confirm your interest in the property before you are fully committed to it or put down any earnest money.

The only issue that is going to reduce your ability to buy a home under the current situation is if your continued

employment is in doubt. If you have to finance your purchase with a mortgage, just know that the lender will verify your employment immediately prior to closing and could refuse to fund the closing.

Then you not only lose out on your home purchase, but you will likely forfeit your earnest money deposit, since the last deadline to terminate has passed.

Each week I have been checking the MLS to see how many homes are being listed and how many are going under contract as the Covid-19 stay-at-home order remains in place.

For the weeks of March 22nd and March 29th, the market showed surprising resilience, with statistics comparable to prior years. What about last week?

During the 7-day period from Sunday April 5th to Saturday April 11th, a total of 819 homes were entered on Denver’s MLS, REcolorado, within 25 miles of downtown Denver. Of those, 22 had already been sold privately, so there were only 797 new active listings. Of those, 133 were already under contract

by Saturday. A total of 25 were immediately withdrawn or expired, many of

them likely because of the no-showings rule, which was clarified on Monday.

This is a huge drop from the same 7day period in 2019, when there were 1,631 new active listings, 227 of which had gone under contract by the end of the same 7-day period.

In 2018, the numbers were similar, with 1,588 new active listings, 579 of which went under contract within the same 7-day period. (Wow!) In 2017, the numbers were also similar, with 1,633 new active listings, 663 of which were under contract by the end of the same 7-day period. The numbers were equally impressive in 2016.

Bottom line? We are finally seeing about a 50% decline in new listings, but many of them are still selling quickly.

Q&A’s with this year’s Arvada Fire Board candidates Eleven candidates running for three director seats

Three board members will be elected to the Arvada Fire Protection District (AFPD) Board of Directors

May 5. A total of 11 candidates are vying for the three seats.

The district provides emergency services, including firefighting and medical services, to approximately 133,000 residents. Its coverage area includes about 43 square miles in Arvada, parts of Wheat Ridge and unincorporated Jefferson County.

I’m running for a second term on the board of directors. I have two kids in Jeffco Public Schools and I serve on various different boards including the Jeffco PTA and Arvada Historical Society. I’ve worked in school security, addictions counseling and worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Littleton for 25 years. I have a diverse background and I think that’s very important experience for the Arvada community.

What motivated you to run?

My record is very clear on my community involvement. It’s part of my personality. I think the first responsibility of government is public safety. We have to continue to look at contributing factors in terms of mental health; our medical calls include mental health, substance abuse and homelessness and these all tie directly into my experience and background.

What would your priorities be?

One of the things I’d like to see us do is help set a new direction for the department.

We can help improve the operations and increase transparency. I believe all resolutions and contracts should be posted clearly for the public, and we should possibly hold two meetings a month instead of one. We could also be cognizant of making sure when we make decisions, that’s done in the meetings.

There’s some discussion about a merger with West Metro Fire and I’ve consistently maintained we would like to see changes before we consider a feasibility study. We’ve got to give our new chief a fair chance, at least one to two years, to make the changes some of the staff want to see.

Leif Carlson Lead Risk Analyst at PDC Energy, Inc. What is your experience?

Our family moved to Arvada in 2015 before our second child was born. We really sought out Arvada and we couldn’t be happier. We love the area and we love our neighbors.

I have a background in fire. I fought wildlife fires for years, most recently serving on a hotshot crew available for nationwide dispatch. I’ve been on roughly 300 wildfires all over the US. I bring relevant business experience to the board and I also serve on the Jefferson County Wildfire Risk Reduction Task Force, where it’s been an honor to get to know many local fire chiefs and community leaders.

What motivated you to run?

I understand the very real bonds that bring firefighters together and I believe in the power of community; if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that neighbors helping neighbors can make a difference.

What would your priorities be?

The department’s in a really good spot.

There was a lot of pain in terms of how some decisions were made (related to a 2019 investigation of the former chief), and I think we should try to learn from it. We’ve got a new fire chief and one of my goals would be to help him succeed. Another goal is making sure standards of coverage are equitable and ensuring Station 9 (in northwest Arvada) is built on time and on budget. I’m also interested in increasing transparency of board decision making; ensuring a rigorous budget process is in place; and ensuring training opportunities are available for our firefighters.

Jack Doane Retired What is your experience?

I’m a third-generation Arvada native. I did 23 years with the Arvada Fire Protection District before retiring as a battalion chief 16 years ago, and I’ve been an Arvada Elks member for 44 years.

My grandfather, father and uncle were firefighters in Arvada. It’s just something I really have in my blood. I remember being up there washing fire trucks when I was a kid and it just seemed like the right thing to do. Since retiring, I’m still involved and often go to the retired members meetings.

What motivated you to run?

I still have a lot of good friends in the fire department. I hear from them how things are going and it’s mostly positive, and I’m very proud of the way the department has been moving forward since I left. I want to help them stay on track and keep doing a good job.

What would your priorities be?

I’ve been around other departments and I feel we are a very fortunate city to have the equipment and firefighters we do. I’m seeing all the planning we did decades ago coming back around — our equipment is good, our stations are good and I know our guys are content. The department does a good job communicating (with the public).

They’ve always been quick to give answers and explain what their projects are. I think we’re lucky here and I just want to see it continue.

Jim Gagliano Firefighter with Westminster Fire Department

What is your experience?

I moved to Colorado in 1996 from New Jersey. I’ve lived in Wheat Ridge and Golden, and I’ve lived in Arvada for 13 years. My wife is a native of Colorado and her and her family have lived in Arvada since she was a kid.

The city’s growing, so the board needs to plan. I understand budgeting, fiscal responsibility, future growth and planning. I’m also a professional firefighter and I understand the needs of first responders.

What is your experience?

I served on the Arvada City Council for 12 years and became very familiar with the issues of service and public safety in the community. I spent 25 years working in the government prison system, I have attended the National Fire Academy in Maryland and I have a certificate in emergency management for public officials. I’ve also served as chair on the Arvada Center Arts Council and Arvada Historical Society, as president of the ArvadaJefferson Kiwanis Club, and on the Arvada Charter Commission.

What motivated you to run?

As a supportive candidate of Arvada Fire, I would ask for your vote May 5. In Westminster, we work together with Arvada. I’m supported by Arvada’s front line members and I’d like to share my experience as an Arvada Fire board member. I live in the city so I would like to be part of helping deliver the best fire and EMS to the citizens of Arvada while being fiscally responsible and operating within the budget.

What would your priorities be?

The city is growing and the Arvada Fire Protection District will need to grow with it. We need to look at future planning and plan for future rises or falls in property values to be able to sustain operations. One priority I would have is to look at station locations and growth areas, for instance, the north and northwest area.

We also need to have open and honest communication from the board to front line responders, and from front line responders to the board, so we can work together on issues. I would work on having avenues for that communication to happen.

Caitlin Reusch Geographic Information Specialist

What motivated you to run?

When I was on council, I took special interest in the workings of the Arvada Police Department and served on the coordinating committee for four years between the fire department and the city council. We worked very closely coordinating the public safety of the city and the fire district.

I’ve been in the public policy arena for many years, and I think I can contribute more to the community.

What would your priorities be?

I’m interested in making sure that our personnel have the personal protective equipment they need and that training programs continue. I want us to continue to be an excellent fire department in maintaining our (national) accreditation. I’d also like to ensure we have the appropriate services for the northwest quadrant of the city. There are plans for the building of Station 9 and I’d like to monitor that our services are sufficient for that.

I’ll make a commitment that I’ll be thorough in the study of all the issues that come before the board. As I did when I was on council, I will communicate actively with citizens about concerns.

Ted Terranova Retired

What is your experience?

I’ve lived in Arvada my entire life and my parents have lived in Arvada since the 1960s.

I have spent the last five years as a Geographic Information Specialist in federal and local governments. GIS is a technical discipline that helps other disciplines. Most recently, I worked for the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, working with the senior GIS analyst on building fire models and predicting what areas were most at-risk for wildfires.

What is your experience?

I’ve lived in Arvada for close to 50 years. I’ve served on the Arvada City Council, Arvada Planning Commission, Arvada Urban Renewal Board and Arvada Variance Board and I previously served on the AFPD board from 2008 to 2016.

In 2010, I convinced the AFPD board we should do our major mil levy request and that we needed to go through the national accreditation process. I played a role in moving our ambulance service in-house and discovering how to consolidate the money needed to build Station 2.

What motivated you to run?

Fiscal transparency and issues of favoritism concern me. One of my priorities is finding what is best for firefighters and personnel while balancing that with the concerns of the people. I also believe I’m probably the youngest person running, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s an opportunity for fresh eyes.

What motivated you to run?

When I left the department, it was a great department and I believe it still is. However, there are some morale issues going on and a loss of trust between the union and the board. In 2008, there were a lot of problems that needed to be knocked down and we did it together — as a board and a union.

What would your priorities be?

Residents should not have to go through avenues like records requests to be able to obtain information that should be public anyway. A vast majority of people are online now, so there could be improvements like recording the meetings and posting them online.

I know there has been a lot of talk about a merger with West Metro Fire. If elected, I would like to see a report on the costs and benefits of that. I know for the newer firefighters, there’s concerns that if we make that move to the larger district, there may be some layoffs. I’d like to explore for our firefighters and emergency personnel how this might affect them.

What would your priorities be?

There are retirees who were volunteer firefighters only, and they have a pension plan now that is run by the district. The plan never considered inflation raises. While I was on the board, I was able to get the retirees two small raises, but I hope to get a policy in place to allow for yearly raises.

Second, we need to get those stations up in Candelas. They’re owed the level of protection the rest of the city is enjoying.

On the merger, if I get elected, I’m going to be pressing for a feasibility study. My feeling is that at the very least, we owe it to the firefighters to find out what it is.

Dave Chandler Retired What is your experience?

We’ve lived here for about 27 years; this is our home. I have two grown children both who graduated from Arvada high schools and my wife works for Jefferson County Public Libraries. I’ve run for city council and mayor in the past and I’m well acquainted with a lot of issues in Arvada. My focus has always been good government, openness and transparency.

What motivated you to run?

I’ve paid attention to the fire district over these years and because of the scandal with the previous chief, I felt like I wanted to do more. We shouldn’t have found about that from Channel 31.

It would have been more responsible if the board was talking to the taxpayers about what was going on. I’m not one to sit on the sidelines if there’s a position that needs to be articulated, so that’s what motivated me.

What would your priorities be?

I really think there needs to be someone on the board who is going to be very meticulous and ask the hard questions on how the money is being spent. The district has done a good job but I think it’s always good to have fresh eyes on these things.

The governance of the district could definitely use some improvement and I believe all of the resolutions should be available on the website for the public.

I’m not in favor of a merger with West Metro Fire. Arvada would simply be swallowed up. If we could implement some of the goals I’ve mentioned, I think that would take care of the concerns of those pushing for a merger.

I’m very familiar with the politics of the community and Arvada as a whole. I’ve been an Arvada resident for 16 years. I’m the president of Foothills Credit Union in Lakewood, and I’ve served on three different boards of credit-union related entities. The president of the CPFF (Colorado Professional Fire Fighters) is a good friend of mine; I have a heart for the foundation and I’ve been able to utilize the resources of the credit union I work with to support the organization.

What motivated you to run?

At my credit union, we’ve served West Metro Fire and City of Lakewood employees, so first responders have been a big part of my life for the past 24 years. I know what these individual men and women go through. With the experiences I have, I think I can really make a difference in a board meeting.

What would your priorities be?

My first priority would be to dive into the ways and means to utilize the income of the department. That’s not to say that isn’t being done now, but I want to figure out if we can use those in the most fiscally sound manner.

Number two, what do our men and women on the street need? Let’s listen to the firefighters and find out if there’s anything missing. One of my big thoughts is, how does the community perceive the firefighters? There could be a little more done in the community showing a firefighter perspective.

I have lived in Arvada almost 20 years now and we love it. I bought my office building in Olde Town and I’ve been involved with the Arvada Chamber of Commerce for 14 years. As a small business owner, I believe it’s important to get embedded with your community.

I was appointed to the Arvada Fire Board of Directors last fall — I think my involvement with the community as a small business leader is why they sought me out. In my insurance and financial business, I work with a lot of firefighters, and I bring a strong financial background to the board.

What motivated you to run?

When you’re a small business owner in your community, it’s also nice to give back to your citizens. Community involvement is important. I live in Arvada, I work in Arvada and I want to give back.

As the only current female board member, I bring some diversity to the board. I was excited to be appointed and I feel like my work isn’t done yet.

What would your priorities be?

Since I’ve been on the board, our big agenda item was the national search to hire a new fire chief and it was an honor to be involved in that. I want to stay involved in the projects we’re working on, including opening two new fire stations. We have to have good response times on calls, so we need to be making sure we put fire stations where they’re needed.

Protecting the citizens is the main goal. We want to be fiscally responsible and making sure we’re taking care of our firefighters.

Candice Rosenberger Tax examiner for the State of Colorado What is your experience?

I have been a resident of Arvada since 2015. I grew up in Littleton and my aunt and uncle lived in Arvada, so I grew up spending my summers in high school with them. I’ve been an EMT and paramedic for 20 years. I now work as a paramedic on a part-time basis and work full-time for the Department of Revenue.

What motivated you to run?

My aunt was married to Jim Schaeffer, who was a firefighter in Arvada who passed away a few years ago (after a cancer diagnosis). I believe the number one priority of the district should be that the men and women serving are safe and go home every night.

What would your priorities be?

In the last few years, there have been financial moves and real estate transactions made by the department that I didn’t agree with. As far as the new stations, I believe one of the properties acquired for that was acquired over market value, and some of the things I feel would be the highest priority for spending, I’ve seen go by the wayside.

Employees’ welfare needs to be at the forefront of what we’re doing. It needs to be a continual process of improving everything — for example, maybe they (the firefighters) need to be transitioning out of gear a little bit quicker. There are a lot of things we could be doing.

We need to be making sure our employees have all the tools to serve the public as effectively as they possibly can.

At a virtual meeting held April 6, Arvada’s city council was focused on ensuring the city can respond to issues as quickly as possible as news continues to suggest the impacts of COVID-19 are far from over.

In a unanimous decision, the council voted to pass a resolution authorizing the extension of city manager Mark Deven’s emergency declaration. Deven first declared an emergency in Arvada March 13. On March 23, council approved a first extension through April 6.

Since March 13, Deven and the city have executed a number of actions that, without an emergency declaration, would require a longer process of approval: Closing city facilities,

working with the business community to address concerns and authorizing leave policies for employees who cannot work remotely or cannot work because of illness or an ill family member.

“We believe there will be additional issues along these lines that we’ll have to react to and therefore make some quick decisions on,” Deven said.

Under speedy trial guidelines, “typically, a defendant must be tried within about 90 days of being arraigned or entering a plea,” Morris said. In some cases, the court can extend the trial deadline by 28 days, but the city believes this extension will not be enough to account for the duration of the health crisis.

But with the emergency ordinance, judges can issue special orders related to court procedures, hearing locations and timeframes of judicial proceedings. These orders remain in effect for 90 days or less, though if the emergency continues longer than 90 days, the judge can extend the order another 90 days.

The ordinance is only valid during a declared emergency and will be repealed when the COVID-19 emergency ends. All orders issued prior to the end of the emergency will remain valid.

Movies make sense in a world that doesn’t QUIET DESPERATION

uring these strange days and nights, many of you are watching films to pass time. So am I: mostly comedies, mysteries, and, believe it or not, love stories.

Yes, I am a bread crumb-encrusted old frog, but deep down (very deep) I am a romantic, bread crumb-encrusted old frog, with some love story suggestions.

I can’t, however, recommend “Love Story,” the 1970 movie based on Erich Segal’s book.

Segal was a Harvard, Yale, and Princeton professor who should have known better. I hope he grimaced all the way to the bank.

Everyone knows about “Casablanca,” so I will skip it. The same goes for “When Harry Met Sally” and “Titanic.”

How are we responding to the moment

S

o, where do we stand?

No, this is not going to be a medical/epidemiological/economic briefing. I’m not qualified to do any of that, and, HITTING frankly, if you wanted that, there’s only about HOME 73 other outlets you could go to for much better information than you’ll get from me.

Though, I do want to take this opportunity to point out that there was a limited study that came out from Germany last Michael Alcorn week that indicates that seven TIMES as many people seem to be getting exposed to the Wuhan coronavirus and fight it off before they become symptomatic or have a chance to get tested for it than are actually contracting SARS-CoViD 19. So there’s that.

But, no — I’m more interested in how we are responding to it.

For instance, the Kia Motor Corporation has pledged a donation of $1 million dollars through its Accelerate the Good program specifically targeted to help homeless youth during the CoViD-19 crisis. As they say in their ad, how can you shelter in place when you live on the streets?

Kia is not alone in its good corporate citizenship. Simple gestures matter:

King Soopers dedicates the first hour of business two days a week specifically to serve the most vulnerable population during this pandemic, the elderly. Dow Chemical has tasked five of its production sites with producing over 200 metric tons of hand sanitizer for donation to local health systems and government agencies.

Lowe’s, the home repair company, donated $10 million worth of personal protective gear to help protect healthcare workers on the front lines of the crisis; Target and UPS have followed suit with their own donations of P.P.E. The Hilton Corporation has partnered up with American Express to donate 1 million hotel rooms for nurses, doctors, EMTs, paramedics and others who need a night (or an afternoon) of peace and quiet in isolation from their families, before jumping back in to the battle.

Daniel Murphy, the first baseman for the Colorado Rockies, has personally donated $100k to a foundation helping keep paychecks flowing to the minor league players who are still working their way up. In other words, he and his family just gave a big chunk of money to help people who are trying to replace him.

The quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, Drew Brees, announced a couple weeks ago that he and his family are donating $5 million to the state of Louisiana, through a number of charities, to guarantee that ten thousand meals a day can be delivered to children on meal plans, seniors and families that require them.

All of these are impressive, and wonderful, and indicative of the big hearts and generous spirits of Americans and companies all over. But, frankly, what I’ve been most impressed by are smaller acts of dedication and service. Tens of thousands of teachers all over the metro area going through crash courses on technology so that they can reinvent the education system in a matter of weeks.

The lady I saw in the store last week, rushing to the paper products aisle to grab a pack of toilet paper so that she could hand it to the elderly woman who couldn’t quite move quickly enough to get to that aisle before it was all gone.

One church in Arvada, hastily erecting a drive-in theater setup in their parking lot — the day before it snowed — so that they could hold an Easter Service for people who came up in their cars.

And let’s not forget the howl. That nightly display of respect and support for the healthcare workers in our neighborhoods by — I’m sure no metaphor was intended — howling at the moon (or the night sky) at 8 p.m.

In other words, our best selves are looking pretty good right now. Keep it up, folks. We can do this!

I want to thank city staff for working hard on creating an organized waste system that incorporates payas-you-throw, reduced truck traffic, and increased services, which are essential points for our community, as evident in the annual surveys conducted by Arvada. I also want to thank city staff for negotiating a fantastic contract. When comparing similar services, I believe these prices will be a reduction in cost for most of Arvada residents. I also want to congratulate staff on the success of receiving a $500,000 grant to help pay for the costs of trash carts. I believe that winning this grant shows how important this issue is to the community.

Finally, thank you, City Council.

Your thoughtful work on this issue is very much appreciated. Council has steered staff through tough decisions, guiding the proposed ‘One Street, One Truck’ idea to an organized waste collection system, and for that, I thank you. I believe the proposed organized waste system is a better system than the current system in use today, and I encourage City Council to adopt the program.

Keegan Conley, Arvada Trashing the idea Does anyone really believe that if Arvada has only one trash hauling company that anything will be improved? If we have one trash company in Arvada, the prices will eventually go up, the service go down, and new rules will follow. Mandatory recycling anyone.

If competition is gone, we pay the price. We pay the price with a loss of freedom of choice. We lose the ability to change companies if we are unhappy with the service. Some companies do “a little extra” to keep our business, must we say goodbye to this as well?

I first became acquainted with Ted while he served as a City of Arvada Council member years ago. Ted always performed his homework for the good of Arvada. I then served with him on the City’s “Board of Adjustments” on which he performed excellently. He also has previously served two terms on the A.F.P.D. district board as a Director for which he contributed his services for the department in an outstanding, progressive manner. A man who knows where he’s going to make things happen.

So let’s “move it on ova,” and Vote For Ted Terranova!

“A Star is Born”? Not for me but for many others. Every era has its own, going back to Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, up to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.

How about some offbeat love stories? Top of my list is “Harold and Maude,” starring Bud Cort, Ruth Gordon, and Cat Stevens’ songs.

At the time of filming, Gordon was 51 years older than Cort.

Cat Stevens appears in a funeral scene; look closely.

The strangest love story? “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” It starred Peter Sellers who

portrayed Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, United States President Merkin Muffley, and Dr. Strangelove.

Strongly recommended: “Roman Holiday.” If you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil the ending. Audrey Hepburn co-starred with a man her own age, unlike “Love in the Afternoon” with Gary Cooper (Cooper was 28 years older than Hepburn), or “Sabrina” with Humphrey Bogart (Bogart was 30 years older than Hepburn).

Hepburn, by the way, was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston.

There’s “Say Anything,” starring Ione Skye and Jon Cusack.

Skye is Scottish singer Donovan’s daughter. Donovan had hits with “Catch the Wind,” “Mellow Yellow” and “Jennifer Juniper.”

Finally, Charlie Chaplin’s love for the blind girl in “City Lights” is incomparable.

Ethel M. Parker

November 22, 1922 – April 1, 2020 Parker, Ethel M. passed away peacefully on April 1 in Lakewood, CO. She was born in Wadena, MN on November 22, 1922 to Ivan and Florence McGarry. She was married to Karl (“Jack”) Parker on June 28, 1947. In 1955, Ethel and Karl relocated to Arvada, CO where they raised their family.

Ethel was a dedicated employee of the Jefferson County School District for over 20 years. She had her mother’s talent for cooking and served up

the best home cooked meals especially at holidays. Ethel was an avid card player and golfer. Most of all, Ethel enjoyed time spent with her family who she loved beyond measure.

She is survived by her three daughters, Karla Flora (James); Debra Schartz (Donald); Diane Hise (Daryl) as well as her four grandchildren, Lindsay; Janet; Matthew; Katelin and seven great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed, but always loved.

Cerf was the official trainer for Fitbit in Colorado for four years, hosting special exercise events around the area.

“Every workout I did for that was 100 percent body weight-based,” Cerf said.

That means lots of push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and squats, but Cerf said there are plenty of ways to vary the routine.

“We never did the same exercise twice in four years,” Cerf said.

“And people were surprised. If you have equipment, great. But, as one client and I have joked, your body is heavier than any equipment you’d lift in the gym anyways.”

The most visible way the symphony is keeping its work alive is through its #PlayOn series, which lets people enjoy different kinds of performances until at least May 11. About three weeks ago the symphony shared a digital version of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” on YouTube, which quickly gained traction on social media, earning about 500,000 views. To make the concert even more special, they feature conductor and musician introductions and concert activities.

“We are also in the process of developing educational content for children and parents for use while we shelter in place,” Kern noted.

On the financial side of things, staff has been working to get a handle on what the future will look like with concerts being postponed and an uncertain timeframe as to when things will reopen.

s challenging as it may be to keep up your fitness regimen while stuck in home quarantine, one thing is almost necessary — an internet connection.

As people across the country fondly recall their gyms stocked with rows of elliptical machines, racks of weights and a schedule full of Zumba classes, their trainers are busy uploading content for their clients at home, all designed to help them whip their bodies back into shape — or at least stop them from losing the physical gains they’ve made.

“I guess we are making the best of a bad situation and have kind of pivoted at this point,” said Jon Cerf, owner of fitness chain Core Progression. “We’ve pivoted to running all of our facilities virtually for now and doing the quarantine.”

Cerf operates four Core Progression gyms in the Denver Metro area — in Arvada, Lakewood, Northglenn and downtown Denver — with more planned as franchises are slated to open in Florida, North Carolina, California and Nevada.

All the classes Cerf and his team have run in the past few weeks have been virtual.

“Anybody that was doing our small group offerings, we have livestreams through Zoom and Google Hangouts daily,” he said.

“Clients that were doing private or semi-private sessions, we can do Facetime and Skype for a more private kind of workout.”

“Each studio has a different calendar, so if they wanted to work with the people in our Boulder location they can sign up there,” Cerf said. “Or if they don’t know which location, we can pair them with the person that’s the best fit during this time.”

Core Progression’s sessions range from $20 to $50 depending on the number of spaces and the duration of each workout. The private videos go both ways, with coaches watching the people training as much as the people training watch them.

Proper technique is key, he said: “It’s all kinesiology, physics and understanding anatomy and how to put people in the right position to get the most benefit. A lot of what we do is individual, and we like to tailor it to our clients. It’s not the same as being there in person, but we can offer tips: Drop your hips, rotate left, bring your knee up.

You are still getting that personal coaching as opposed to passively watching a workout.”

Lindsay Gablehouse, the fitness manager for the Chuze Fitness location at 120th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, said her company is loading up videos on the internet, too. She runs the team training program and also leads cycling, body pump and yoga classes.

Chuze does not offer one-on-one training with their coaches, either online or at the gym. Instead, they focus on training in a group setting. During normal times, the gym hosts seven training sessions throughout the day beginning at 5 a.m. with room for up to 39 people.

“We had to close off, generally, on March 16,” she said. “That was on Monday, and on Wednesday the 18th we had our first live Chuze class.

We had three instructors who went into the gym and did a live session.

TIPS FOR EXERCISING AT HOME Body weight is king. Standard calisthenics that rely on gravity and body weight are still the best ways to get a workout.

Change the exercises to fit you. If doing a push-up is too hard, trying pushing up from the knees instead of your feet. Too easy? Try to clap in between push-ups.

Get creative. Plumb the depths of the storage closet, the kids’ toy box and the garage for equipment that can be lifted, pulled, pushed or stretched to work out your muscles.

Weight doesn’t matter. Fit by Hyland Hills’ David Wagner posted a how-to video showing a vigorous workout using a roll of toilet paper.

Get outside. As long as walks in the park are acceptable, and keeping physical distance rules in mind, get out and walk.

Some fresh air and the sun can brighten your mood while you get your heart rate up.

Enlist the kids. Roll around with them, wrestle in the back yard, play catch with a ball or a Frisbee. Chuze Fitness trainer Lindsay Gablehouse said she was surprised how much of a workout she got just kicking a soccer ball in the backyard with her sons.

Turn your garden into a thriving success with help from the master gardeners at CSU Extension

n Colorado, there’s a program comprised of 2,500 master gardeners across all 64 counties that develop science-based research and information, making it where you don’t have to spend hours upon hours researching how to develop and be successful at growing a garden.

Through the Colorado State University (CSU) Extension program, certified experts do the research, planting and studies to help you be successful in growing any kind of plant no matter where you live in the state. The master gardeners are available by phone, email and in person (when home-based orders are not in place). These gardeners can diagnose problem soils, identify viruses and insect issues through photos and lab testing.

“When it comes to the Extension program, we like to say why Google it?” said John Murgel, the CSU extension program associate for horticulture in Douglas County. “A Google search provides crazy results that takes you all over the map.

With Extension, you get one-on-one interaction, fact sheets on everything local. It’s an awesome resource.”

All of the master gardeners with the Extension program are certified horticulturist. Through a variety of outlets, including blogs, they provide help to gardeners with watering, planting guidelines, understanding sunlight, Colorado’s crazy weather patterns and explain what the elevation here means to seeds you put into the soil.

Patti O’Neil, horticulturist and urban food systems coordinator for CSU Extension in Jefferson County, said they want gardens to thrive and want residents to know they are here to help at every stage of gardening from planning, planting, growing to tips on how to store food after the harvest.

“One of our biggest fears is that a resident starts a garden without assistance, they fail and never come back to it again,” she said. “We want gardeners to plant vegetables, flowers and everything. We are here to make any garden, whether it’s here on the front range or up in the mountains, succeed.”

O’Neil said when home-based rules are not in

place, the Jefferson County offices can provide inperson diagnosis of plant problems and test soil in the lab. Classes are also offered in most counties.

With soil, we stress that it’s the most important aspect of getting started,” O’Neil said. “You can’t always just dig in some dirt and be successful.

We test soil in labs and can provide guidance on nutrients needed to get you started.”

O’Neil said with 155 master gardeners available in Jefferson County alone, they are always on hand to answer questions, help diagnose and solve problems and provide information.

“Call us with any questions,” O’Neil said. “Don’t be afraid to asks a lot of questions. We want to help with all of it.”

Murgel said when it comes to weather and landscape, Colorado is diverse. The master gardeners with CSU Extension take into account all Colorado landscapes and provide fact sheets on what to plant and when to avoid frost, weather issues or what to consider in regards to altitude.

“We understand that now isn’t a good time to plant tomatoes or squash, you want to wait for the heat,” Murgel said. “But radish doesn’t always do as well when it’s overheated, which means now is the time to plant some of your vegetables. Our websites and master gardeners can provide all of that information that is local to the area residents live.”

The CSU Extension program was established

by Congress in 1914, authorizing land-grant universities to get research-based information out to the public. Besides landscape and gardening the certified experts provide free information in agriculture, 4-H development, animal health, drought conditions, renewable energy, natural resources and food safety and health.

The value of gardening goes beyond what grows in the ground

ardening is a great way to improve the community, beautify a yard or provide great-tasting fruits and vegetables. However, going beyond the roots, gardening has proven to be beneficial both mentally and physically.

Studies continue to show that gardening goes beyond the plants and provides true physical and mental health benefits.

John Murgel, a horticulturist with the Colorado State University Extension program in Douglas County, said for him, gardening provides connection to human history and human life.

“Gardening connects me to the outdoors, to the plants and wild birds and native bees that live in my neighborhood,” he said. “Depending on which plants I’m using at the moment, (gardening) can be everything from childhood memories from family heirloom plants or veggies to people in other ages and in other continents going back centuries or further. They give me deep perspective.”

On the physical side, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) says gardening is a great way to get exercise.

Gardening can decrease risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke,

depression, colon cancer and premature death.

Some of the top benefits of gardening include: A natural source of Vitamin D: Vitamin D increases calcium levels, which provides support for bones and the immune system. For older adults, increased Vitamin D can help improve serum levels.

Reducing stress: Gardening has proven to be a calming activity for those suffering from anxiety. Whether gardening alone, or with a group, digging in the dirt, planting, growing and harvesting can help create a calm.

Good exercise: Gardening is a good way to increase physical activity without feeling the pain of a full workout. The CDC recommends being active for at least 2.5 hours a week to strengthen muscles and improve bone health and circulation.

A good after-retirement activity: For many aging adults, retirement can become lonely. Gardening has served as a good hobby and way to engage with neighbors and feel a sense of accomplishment as the garden grows.

Decrease in dementia risk: A variety of studies have found that gardening helps the mind, decreasing the risk of dementia through physical activity.

Creates a healthier diet: By growing your own food, which means vegetables, gardeners tend to have better diets, which improves weight, diabetes risk, and lower blood pressure.

Fighting revenue loss, city puts millions into small business loan fund Arvada, AEDA and AURA bringing $2.5 million in support

As the City of Arvada looks back on weeks of revenue loss — with a state order closing dine-in services March 17 and an order asking residents to stay home starting March 26 — the city’s finance team is working to project what the loss means for Arvada’s future.

In the best-case scenario, in which business activity begins to re-normalize in May, that loss could be around $4.5 million, said Bryan Archer, Arvada’s finance director. This includes an estimated drop in auto use tax, ranging from $700,000 to $1 million, and an estimated drop in sales tax, ranging from $1.8 to $3.5 million.

Arvada typically receives about $58 million in sales tax annually.

“We’re look at having to change our budget,” Archer said. “What we’re trying to figure out is how much.”

However, a number of saving graces should help the city weather the storm, he said.

The city works off of a 10-year financial plan, allowing it to spread reductions over the next 10 years. It also has a larger reserve fund than

years,” he said.

“The city tries to look at things like hiring freezes and adjustments to pay before saying we won’t plow as often or pave your streets as often,” he said.

Small businesses are also feeling the impacts at an individual level.

Through the CARES Act, the federal government has committed to providing almost $350 billion in forgivable loans for small businesses’ employment expenses.

However, the funding could take more than a month to reach small

businesses, Archer estimated, leaving many in need of a way to bridge the gap from now to then.

To help, Arvada plans to offer local loan options that could be turned around in a matter of days. One is an approximate $2.5 million loan fund, which will be made up of funding from the city, the Arvada Economic Development Association (AEDA) and the Arvada Urban Renewal Authority (AURA).

The organizations have withdrawn money from their reserve funds to support the project, Archer said. The city council, AEDA and AURA boards unanimously supported the fund’s establishment.

“The city is in partnership with the business community, and this is a time where we as the city need to step up to be the good partner to our businesses,” Mayor Marc Williams said.

Beginning April 13, small businesses can access the application by visiting the city’s website, arvada.org. Applicants must be local businesses in good standing; have less than 50 employees; and have experienced financial impacts due to the novel coronavirus spread.

Small businesses can apply for a no-interest loan up to $10,000, meaning the funds could assist at least an approximate 250 businesses. Applications will be considered on a first come, first served basis.

COVID and crime: Jeffco sees overall drop but domestic violence calls up Mental health experts say stress and confinement are reasons to worry

From work practices to eating and drinking habits, the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be impacting nearly every aspect of current life. In Jefferson County, that also seems to include lowering crime levels — at least as far as Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office calls for service and arrest numbers.

Last month, the sheriff ’s office received 9,979 calls for service. That’s down just under nine percent from the March 2019 total of 10,760. Arrests are down even more. In March of 2020, the Sheriff ’s Office made 247 arrests, which is down about 25 percent from the March 2019 total of 320.

Those numbers do not represent a decrease stemming from Sheriff Jeff Shrader’s directive to start using enhanced arrest standards — being much more selective about whom to arrest — as those standards only went into effect on April 1. However, the sheriff had already asked deputies to use discretion in making arrests in an effort to manage the jail population due to the pandemic weeks earlier.

Domestic Violence As stay-at-home orders have gone in

Jeffco and counties throughout the nation, mental health experts have also expressed concern about the possibility that the anxiety, distress, confinement and other concerns that have come with COVID-19 would lead to large increases in domestic violence.

But the domestic violence numbers for March 2019 and 2020 provided by the sheriff ’s office paint a less clear picture as calls for service have risen while arrests have actually fallen.

In March of 2020, 83 domestic violence-related criminal justice reports were generated in the county.

That number was up from 71 in March 2019. But the 33 domestic violence arrests the department made is actually two down from the 35 such arrests the department made in March of 2019.

But while those numbers do not paint a clear picture, Amy Miller, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at the Jefferson Center, said the conditions

are still right from a mental health perspective for an increase in domestic violence.

“I think the combination of the stress from the uncertainty and some of the financial strain people are experiencing can certainly heighten anyone’s level of irritability or tension or frustration and then you add that to the being cooped up with same people day in and day out and that’s a concern,” said Miller. “And if there’s been abusive tendencies in the past it would definitely increase the risk of that happening again.”

The pandemic situation also creates another concern in that victims and potential victims have fewer chances to escape a potential abuse situation by going somewhere else. Mandated reporters and others who might be able to interact with a victim and learn about any abuse that has taken place and the need to report it also now have fewer opportunities to do so, she said.

That latter issue means sheriff ’s office data may be a less reliable indicator of the amount of such violence taking place in the county, even as deputies continue to respond to reports.

“Our team training sessions run on Instagram, we run two, one at 1 a.m. and at 1 p.m.,” Gablehouse said.

“All of our family workouts are on Facebook. Our group fitness sessions go back and forth, between the two platforms.”

She said she understands needing equipment upon occasion. She suggests using regular household items, like bottles of laundry detergent, to add resistance.

“We have to get creative,” she said.

“At this point we’ve all been told to just pick up some soup cans or the laundry detergent, and I think a lot of people just dismiss that idea. But at the end of the day we need something to pick up, something to push, we need something to pull, to rotate

Stairs are a good thing, too, and combining them with something heavy makes for a good workout.

Wagner said some equipment is small and inexpensive and easy to get — even in quarantine. He recommends going online to find elastic bands, wide strips of material that provide resistance and make anything, from a leg lift to an arm curl, more difficult.

Chuze’s Gablehouse said there is plenty of room for creativity, even in body weight exercises.

“We might all know the traditional moves, but for each one there are variations they can do to make those traditional moves different,” she said. “You can do push-ups from the knee, or from the toes. But you can also do them with one leg lifted.

Those are not the same moves and the intensity differences you create there are dramatic.”

She found her children’s sled in her garage and gave herself a workout one day pushing it around the backyard. She said getting outside, whether it’s on neighborhood sidewalks or just in the back yard, is very important.

“With everybody stuck in their homes, we need to play,” she said. “As

the house feels smaller and smaller every day, the mental benefit of laughing and getting those natural endorphins running in your body is important. We need to take a couple breaks everyday to just feel good in our bodies and connect with our families.”

Hyland Hills’ Wagner agrees: Just about any movement is good movement.

“Constantly, constantly move. You want to make sure you get up and get some movement during the day,” Wagner said. “Just walk around your house, go on outside and go in the sun in your front yard. Movement is key. You do not want to be sedentary, and the more you sit down, the more the quarantine gets in your way.”

That does not have to be limited to time spent working out.

“Do what you can to stay busy around the house,” Wagner said. “Do projects you’d normally be putting off. Clean out the garage, or something. There are all kinds of things you can do to keep active.”

“I looked at March 2019 as opposed to March 2020 for domestic violence reports which I think is the number everyone has been looking at and I was actually pretty surprised to see there was a decrease,” Romero said.

“In March 2019 we had 207 and in March 2020 we had 200.”

Golden Police Public Information Officer Joe Harvey said overall crime also seems to have been fairly steady.

However, he did say his department was starting to see what he described as a “slight uptick in what we would describe as family disagreements and family violence.”

“At this point, it’s been nothing really too significant but we are anticipating that number may go higher as we go along in this process,” Harvey said.

Among the other issues the department has seen that Harvey said are obviously attributed to COVID-19 is a “handful of altercations in front of some of the grocery stores.”

As a result, Golden police are now regularly sending officers to patrol

grocery stores, particularly during morning hours reserved for seniors as Harvey said some of those altercations had taken place then. Still, Harvey said he felt good overall about how the city was handling social distancing and the challenges that come with it.

“From what I’m seeing under the circumstances we are all facing think it’s been as good as possible and I don’t think we’ve had anybody that’s gotten really out of control,” he said. “I do think we’ve had some instances where we’ve had some people that were feeling distressed and overreacted in some scenarios that caused us some issues but I think those have been few and far between right now.”

Still, Harvey said he and other officers remain uneasy about the situation, particularly given the uncertainty about how long it could last.

“I think for the most part people are trying to do their best,” he said. But I’m not going to lie, I think all of law enforcement is a bit nervous about what this may look like in two, three and maybe four weeks, especially if pools aren’t being opened and the normal places that people are able to take kids.”
