Jeffco nets $523,030 in GOCO grants Includes projects at North Arvada Middle and Warren Tech

The Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Board recently awarded three grants totaling $523,030 for projects in Jefferson County.

The City of Arvada, in partnership with North Arvada Middle School, received a $110,000 School Yard Initiative grant; the City of Lakewood, in partnership with Warren Technical High School, received a $63,030 School Yard Initiative grant; and Evergreen Park and Recreation District (EPRD) received a $350,000 Local Park and Outdoor Recreation grant to acquire 2.2 acres of property connecting Buchanan and Bergen Parks.

School Yard Initiative grants help schools, which apply in partnership with their local governments, build outdoor spaces where kids enjoy unstructured play and outdoor learning. All school yards must be designed, in part, by students.

Warren Tech will use its grant funding to expand on an existing outdoor education center. Warren Tech provides students with the opportunity to learn trades and earn college credit while still in high school, and many of its programs have an outdoor learning focus. This expansion will give students more opportunities to develop career-building skills outside.

Currently, school grounds offer a farm where students can learn about planting and harvesting crops, and the existing outdoor classroom.

Planned expansions include an outdoor kitchen, walking trail with native plants and educational signage, a chicken coop and a shaded picnic area. Students will use these spaces as part of classroom activities and during recreation time. Members of the public will also have access to certain spaces outside of school hours.

“It’s a community hub,” Liz Hudd, science instructional specialist at Warren Tech, said of the schools outdoor space. “And the GOCO grant is going to be really important in finishing it.”

Hudd said the project is more than just a school yard initiative. It’s a natural playground to learn about the environment, where your food comes from and how to prepare food.

North Arvada Middle Arvada North Middle School will use GOCO funds to build an outdoor obstacle course on school grounds.

Before the recent addition of a com-

munity garden, the only outdoor amenities at the school were a basketball court, gravel track, and two four-square courts. North Arvada offers no school-sponsored sports teams, so the obstacle course will provide needed outdoor play opportunities for students.

The obstacle course will be available to students during recess and before and after school and will be open to the public outside of school hours. According to the school’s application, local Boy Scout troops, church groups, and athletic teams plan to use the course for practices and team-building exercises.

Erika Meyer, program officer for youth initiatives with GOCO, said what’s unique about these projects is that this is the first time since the grant launched in 2013, that a middle school and high school have been awarded funds.

“Initially, it was really geared toward updating elementary playgrounds,” Meyer said. “It’s great to see that these schools that serve older students are recognizing the

importance of outdoor play and learning and prioritize that.”

Connecting parks The GOCO Local Park and Outdoor Recreation grant received by the Evergreen Parks and Recreation District will help purchase 2.2 acres of private residential property in order to connect Buchanan and Bergen Parks and prevent future private development on the land. The property is in the northwest corner of Buchanan Park, with Denver’s 25-acre Bergen Park to its north and Jefferson County’s 1475-acre Elk Meadow Park to its south. It is the last piece of privately owned residential property in 1,540 acres of contiguous parkland in North Evergreen.

To date, GOCO has invested more than $46.4 million in projects in Jefferson County and has conserved more than 6,400 acres of land there.

GOCO funding has supported Staunton State Park, South Table Mountain, the acquisition of Applewood Golf Course and the Peaks to Plains Trail, among other projects.

FirstBank donates to developmental disability org STAFF REPORT

FirstBank has donated $5,000 to the Lakewood-based Developmental Disabilities Resource Center (DDRC) in honor of March Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The $5,000 gift will enable DDRC to help individuals and families address crisis needs through the organization’s “25th Hour Fund.”

The emergency fund has been used to help a disabled man replace his stolen commuter bicycle so he

could keep his job, or helping to pay for the security deposit for a struggling family with a disabled member to make a necessary move.

Barbara Moritzky, The Developmental Disability Foundation board treasurer thanked FirstBank in the groups’ joint statement.

“This generous donation will enable DDRC and the DD Foundation to help many individuals and families who often have nowhere else to turn in an emergency.”

The Federal Reserve Raised Interest Rates, Yet Mortgage Rates Plummeted. Why?

If you follow mortgage interest rate fluctuations, you may wonder how mortgage rates can drop despite the Federal Reserve’s increase in its wellpublicized interest rate several times in the past year or so.

The benchmark 30-year mortgage rate plummeted 27 basis points (over 1/4 percent) last week, the biggest weekly drop in a decade, creating a huge affordability window for home buyers and for homeowners considering a mortgage refinance. The last time the benchmark 30-year rate was below this level was Jan. 3, 2018 when it hit 4.10 percent, according to Bankrate’s historical data.

This can be a teachable moment, so I asked one of my preferred lenders, Scott Lagge of Movement Mortgage to explain.

According to Scott, financial markets are complex and many things can impact interest rates. What we are experiencing currently is based to a large degree on consumer sentiment. As consumers, we can have a huge impact on the market

based on what we “feel” about where the economy is headed. If we “feel” the market is getting worse, we hold onto our money, spend less, buy less, and shift our investments from short term to long term investments. Therefore, worries about slowing economic growth can change our behaviors as consumers and as investors. Investors worried about the economy slowing in the short-term start to shift their money to long-term investments such as bonds, specifically mortgage backed securities (also known as mortgage bonds). This flood of money into mortgage bonds reduces mortgage bond values and rates fall due to an over abundance or supply of bonds. In essence, it’s supply and demand.

For a more technical explanation, Scott cited this statement from Greg McBride, CFA, Bankrate’s chief financial analyst: “Worries about slowing economic growth — both domestically and abroad — and the inversion of the Treasury yield curve put investors into

Changes in mortgage rates can affect home prices. To the extend that buyers use mortgage financing, what they can afford to purchase goes up or down. As

mortgage rates flirted with 5%, we saw a definite softening of the long-running seller’s market. If these low rates last into the coming weeks, we may see more buyers wanting to resume house hunting and lock in a low mortgage rate.

Answering a Reader’s Question Q. I want to get above my listing price. If I get a full-price offer, do I have to accept it?

A. My sellers occasionally ask this question because my listing strategy involves pricing a home at or near current, real-world market value, as opposed to some hoped-for higher price. Sometimes a seller says they don’t want to sell for any amount that’s not above the listing price and asks if they’re required to accept a full-price (or any) offer.

The answer is “no.” Sellers cannot be compelled to accept an offer, irrespective of the offered price. I always explain this up front to prospective buyers (through their agent, if represented) who

submit a full-price offer. The Colorado real estate contract states that if the listing agent produces an offer that matches the terms specified, the seller owes the commission to the agent. To better serve my clients’ interests I insert an additional provision stating that the seller, will not owe me a commission on any rejected offer.

At the same time, however, I point out that if the only offer we receive is for full-price (or less), then we didn’t underprice the home, did we?

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) announce April 1 that the grand opening for the G Line, which will run through Denver, Adams County, Arvada and Wheat Ridge, will be on Friday, April 26.

On opening weekend, RTD will offer free rides along the line.

Though the announcement came on April Fools’ Day, RTD General Manager and CEO Dave Genova said the opening date was no joke.

“Thank you for your patience, thank you for your understanding and thank you to our partners,” Genova said. “I know it’s been a rough road and this process has had its challenges.”

The 11.2-mile electric commuter rail line will connect passengers from the westernmost station, at Wheat Ridge and Ward, to Union Station in downtown Denver in 25 minutes.

The project is part of RTD’s 2004 voter-approved FasTracks program to expand transit across the Denver metro region. The G Line will be operated by RTD concessionaire Denver Transit Partners (DTP), which also manages operation of the University of Colorado A Line to Denver International Airport and the B Line to Westminster under a federally funded public-private partnership.

who was involved in making this happen.”

The G line was supposed to open in the fall of 2016, but has been in limbo working out the kinks of its wireless positive train control (PTC) technology, a complex system that reduces the risk of catastrophic train accidents. RTD is the first transit agency in the United States to build PTC technology into a new rail system from the ground up, which has required extensive testing and modification of the system.

“As RTD marks its 50th anniversary of people moving people, I am thrilled that this line will soon provide another excellent option to get riders where they need to go,” Genova said.

“Many people have worked hard to make this project a reality, and I cannot underscore how grateful we are for the continued patience the public has displayed during this process.

“It is of utmost importance to me that this line, like all of our projects, is safe and reliable for our passengers.

I am confident that we have done this.

We are ready.”

According to RTD, ridership on the G Line has been forecast at 9,000 passenger trips per day during the first year, and at 12,900 daily trips in 2035.

The G Line will open with quiet zones in place along the entirety of the line. Quiet zones — railroad segments where train operators don’t have to sound their horns on a routine basis — are established once all regulatory approvals have been processed.

RTD assisted Arvada, Wheat Ridge and Adams County in the application process to secure these approvals.

Horns can continue to be used in emergency situations; if maintenance workers, pedestrians or vehicles are on or near the tracks; if there are issues with gate timing at any of the G Line’s 16 crossings; or if a train must use automatic train control (ATC) instead of PTC. areas, and space for skis and bikes.

Trains are designed to travel faster than light rail trains over longer distances, with fewer stops. Passengers board at the same level as station platforms. Commuter rail service debuted in the Denver metro area in April 2016, with the introduction of the University of Colorado A Line.

‘My natural tendency is to be an encourager’ Meet Patsy Pfaff: 2019 Arvada Chamber Woman of the Year

Patsy Pfaff is known to many in Arvada as the cookie lady.

Whether she’s going to the car mechanic, the bank, the doctor her signature baked-from-scratch snicker doodles usually accompany her.

“I feel like have the opportunity to brighten someones day, to make life a little bit better and it took me nothing to offer them that gift,” Pfaff said.

“I strive to do the right thing every day and I feel like I am. I don’t have the stress or the crunch of the work world in my life, so my gift in life is baking.”

Pfaff, 66, started volunteering in Arvada when her children were young.

When her son was born in 1985, she became one of the first 25 donors at the Mothers’ Milk Bank, a nonprofit program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation that collects, processes, tests and provides donor human milk to babies in need. She was heavily involved in her church, First United Church of Arvada and at local schools.

Pfaff started a group at Campbell Elementary reading to lower elementary classes and focused on making staff feel

appreciated and noticed while on the Ralston Valley High PTA. Her biggie right now is that she is extremely active in the ET Chapter of PEO, a group that provides educational opportunities for women through scholarships. She has held most of the officer positions locally and statewide for PEO. These are just some of the reasons, Pfaff has been named the 2019 Woman of the Year by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce.

“Patsy succeeds in pulling together a community the size of Arvada by using an ethos which represents small town friendship and love,” said Kim Smagala, who met Pfaff playing racketball in 1981. “The city of Arvada is fortunate to have her infectious energy and activism in its midst.”

Pfaff is frequently seen on the Ralston Creek Trail where she is an avid walker, having completed in 77 half marathons in the last 10 years. She serves on the advisory board for All Out Multisport, a race company, and as an encourager for her friends to get out walking.

“Patsy is one of those people that’s there for you when you need them,” said Kathi Likes, adding that after her husband died, Pfaff got her out walking again.

Now Likes is part of Pfaff walking group, Team Altitude. Their shirts read, “13.1 miles, not a walk in the park.”

“My natural tendency is to be an encourager,” Pfaff said. “To make life a little bit brighter for someone else.”

These and similar tasks may seem small to someone, but they can be a big deal to the recipient, said Jessica Wall, operations and administrative assistant at A Little Help.

“It’s the idea of connecting with your neighbors,” Wall said. “It feels good to be able to help in your community.”

A Little Help is a volunteer-driven nonprofit that connects neighbors to offer assistance for small household tasks and to build community connections that help seniors age in place.

“Volunteers are the vital heart of the organization,” Wall said. “We’re always looking for folks who can give their time and skills to help (seniors) thrive in their own home.”

A Little Help is one of more than 15 local organizations participating in Leadership Jefferson County Class of 2019’s Volunteer Drive on April 6.

The Volunteer Drive is this year’s Leadership Jefferson County’s class project, said Sara Spaulding, the public information officer for the city of Wheat Ridge who is a participant in this year’s class. Leadership Jefferson County is a program that offers participants the opportunity to network with other professionals and community members, as well as learn about all aspects of county government, services and quality of life for people who work and live in the area, “Giving back to the community is rewarding because of the difference you’re able to make in peoples lives,” Spaulding said, and “making a contribution in your own community is particularly special.”

“Our volunteers feel like they play a vital role in improving their community,” Gould said.

Kathy Smith of Golden, a retired research scientist, has been volunteering with Communities That Care for about two years.

When she was a working professional raising a child, Smith didn’t have a lot of time to volunteer, she said. So, after she retired, she sought various ways to give back to the community.

Smith chose Communities That Care because it presented her with a longerterm commitment, she said.

Volunteering gives people the opportunity to meet others, as well as become more engaged and knowledgeable about what’s going on in the community, Smith said.

“Volunteering is rewarding because you’re making a difference in your community. And,” Smith said, “it’s nice to get to get out of the house and do something.”

Of the 880 emergency medical service calls Arvada Fire responded to in February, 124 were for falls, making them the number one most common such call for the department. Similarly, in 2017, falls accounted for the third most common reason someone visited the emergency room at Lutheran Medical Center.

Because of the increasing number of individuals age 65 and older experiencing falls that could be prevented, Lutheran and Arvada Fire have teamed up to offer a new kind of fall prevention class.

The class was born out of an innovation contest with staff at Lutheran.

After looking at data, Chuck Ault, regional director of community health improvement at Lutheran, and his team found the 80004 and 80002 zip codes in Arvada had the highest admittance rate for falls. The program focuses on obstacle avoidance and teaching people to fall in a way that doesn’t lead to injury, Ault said.

“The biggest thing that we’ve seen is that obstacle-course performance gets amazingly more proficient among the three sessions,” Ault said. “It starts with a lot of hesitation and fear, but the more participants practice in different situations, the more confident they become.”

As the course progresses, participants are given increased distractions such as low lights, music and duel tasks.

“Walking with all those variations results in increased confidence and reduced mistakes,” Ault said. “Fear of falling is a big risk factor. So if you can move the needle on someone’s fear and increase their confidence you also increase the likelihood that they stay upright.”

Amber Jones with Arvada Fire said the new course is great because it gets participants out of their seats and into a hands-on learning experience.

“Partnershipwise, it’s fantastic,” Jones said, adding that both entities have a common interest in helping this population.

It also gives participants tools to actively prevent a fall that could result in injury, which Ault said is often the beginning of terminal decline.

“Older adults would like to age in place and we would like to see them do that,” Ault said. “One of the serious threats to that is a fall.”

10 area Target stores to undergo remodeling this year Company to spend $150 million over two years to upgrade Denver area shops STAFF REPORT

Target is planning to invest about $150 million over two years to remodel a number of its stores in the Denver metro area, according to a news release.

In 2019, 10 stores will be remodeled, and a handful more will get upgrades in 2020, the release said.

The stores are part of Target’s broader investment to remodel more than 1,000 stores around the country by the end of 2020, the release said.

Renovations for each location will range in scope and be tailored to the needs of local guests, according to the news release. Shoppers can expect to see: • Upgraded merchandising displays and additional mannequins that showcase how different products work together.

• Specialty lighting and modern décor and colors with increased sight lines so guests can explore even more as they walk through

City council rezones districts to account for growth Candidates filing for city elections

Arvada City Council voted March 18 to change the council district boundries due to growth in the northwest area of Council District 4.

Going into the 2019 Arvada City Council election this November, city council districts will be slightly different.

Arvada City Council voted unanimously March 18 to rezone council district boundaries to account for significant growth in District 4, which encompasses the northwest portion of Arvada.

Since city council last changed council district boundaries in March 2013, there has been significant growth in the northwest area of Council District 4, with 34.26 percent of the city’s registered voters living in that district.

“We could have waited until the next census, but that data won’t be available until 2021 or 2022,” City Manager Mark Devon explained to council. “With elections coming up, we felt we needed to put this in front of council now.”.

The new boundaries extend District 1 and District 3 west and extend District 2 northeast. City staff will send a postcard to every registered voter whose council district will change.

council seats — District 2, District 4 and at-large.

District 2 is represented by Mark McGoff, who is wrapping up his third fouryear term. As of March 29, two candidates had turned in their paperwork to run for the seat – Harriet Hall and Virge Owens. McGoff is term-limited and cannot run again.

District 4 is represented by David Jones, who was first elected in 2015. He has not yet filed to run for re-election.

Belmar chef shares secrets to baking a great cake

he Village at Belmar periodically holds cooking classes for its residents, taught by Dave Bolden, the community’s executive chef. On March 26, Bolden demonstrated how to bake a flourless chocolate cake. Check out the recipe if you want to try to make it yourself !

HOW TO MAKE A FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE

Ingredients: Four ounces of fine-quality semisweet chocolate, 1/2 a cup of unsalted butter, ¾ a cup of sugar, three large eggs and ½ a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder Preparation: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter an eight-inch round baking pan. Line bottom with a round of wax paper, and butter the paper.

Chop the chocolate into small pieces. In a double boiler, or metal bowl, set over a saucepan of barely simmered water. Then, melt the chocolate with butter and stir until smooth. Remove the top of the double boiler, or bowl from heat and whisk sugar into the chocolate mixture. Add eggs and whisk well. Sift ½ a cup of coca powder over the chocolate mixture and whisk. Pour batter into pan and bake in the middle of an oven for 25 minutes, or until the top has formed a thin crust. Cook the cake in a pan on a rack for five minutes.

Tailoring your resume to fit your sector Don’t stray from the job description: While it’s important to get the personal summary right, provide experience, education and knowledge - it’s still important to align the resume to the job description.

Whether it’s someone skimming or computer software – you want the keywords of your resume, cover letter and personal summary to align with those specified in the job description.

Depending on the industry in which you are aiming to get hired, your resume could be the key to your success. Whether it be a position in the public sector, a technology job or in education – your resume is going to be key to getting your foot in the door.

Government Work There are perks to getting a job in the public sector. A lot of it centers on benefits, security and good hours. But, you have to get the job first. Even if you have all the experience for the job, applying for a public-sector job is completely different than applying with a private company.

When applying for a public position, it’s important to remember that keywords matter less, given a robot isn’t going to be reading it. In fact, your resume should be as humanized as possible given it will be read by actual people, even a group on a hiring committee from multiple departments.

Some tips to remember in applying for a public job include: Keep it traditional: Stick to the look in resume and cover letter that stays professional and doesn’t get too fancy. Use conservative font to

outline your experience, education and achievements.

Follow the steps: Procedures have to be followed in public-sector positions. Deviating from steps outlines in the job description and post could mean you missing the finalist list of candidates for interviews.

Be specific and thorough: While traditionally its been said to keep your resume short and to only one page. However, for a public position, it’s important to provide details.

Share as much pertinent information as possible to state your case for the position.

Be personable: As stated above, there is not a robot or quick resume skimmer that decides the best possible candidates to interview. Instead, it is a real person who understands what it takes to work a government job where you likely will deal with the public. They are looking for a true person and not just keywords.

Use clear and concise statements.

Technology Jobs Unlike a government job, unless you are applying for a job in the public sector, getting a tech job requires clear, concise information on your experience, certifications and education.

Personal summary: The first step in creating a resume for a tech job is to knock the personal summary out of the park. With the right wording, expressions and information the personal summary can get you a step forward with the application. However, worded incorrectly, especially when it’s a tech department sifting through the material, you may lose consideration before they even start skimming further down the page.

In a summary paragraph, including the title of the job for which you are seeking, experience and a quick rundown of qualifications.

Skill set: It’s important to really list and be thorough in supplying your qualifications that proves you meet the skill set required for the job in which you are applying. While some outside the tech industry may think they are reading a foreign language, tech industry professionals understand and want to know.

Explain areas in which you are an expert, explain areas you are knowledgable and clearly list areas in which you have experience.

What to leave in, what to leave out: Remember to include the parts of your work history that are relevant to the position. Leave out the rest.

Also, include personal details fitting to the position. Include all information regarding your achievements in the field.

A position in Education Education is one of those fields where you can be hired in either the public or private sector. It’s an area where you have stability in hours worked, and it is also increasingly demanding as much as positions in the education field are in demand.

Getting a job in education requires specific skills as much as it requires experiences and credentials. Some of those skills include adaptability, dedication, creativity and the ability to be an effective communicator.

In creating a good resume and building a career in education, some tips to keep in mind include: Gaining experience: The more experience you have, the more willing institutions are to hire you.

Degrees and certifications: Any time you are teaching, or participating in educating any age group, it’s important to have the degrees required by the schools and institutions. However, it’s just as important to show in a resume that you’ve kept up and evolved. Times change, which requires more certifications, updated practices and proof that you stay with the times.

Appearance matters: We aren’t talking about the clothing you choose or how you sit and carry yourself during an interview – we are talking about the resume. Your resume must have a professional look, be well organized. Remember, even in education, a resume may only be skimmed for up to 30 seconds.

VOICES Some tips about how to stay afloat in a sea of fraud

N

ot too long ago, one of our newspaper employees received what looked like an urgent email from the company publisher. He needed some prepaid gift cards, totaling hundreds of dollars, and needed them quick.

The employee jumped across the street and bought the prepaid cards, eager to help out the boss.

Luckily, that’s as far as things went.

The email had been a sham, faked by a computer-savvy scammer.

By now, we’re all aware of the scam in which a supposed Nigerian prince is quite eager to share his great wealth with you, if only you’d give him a down payment, or at least your bank account

OUR VIEW number and a few personal details.

But those easy-to-spot scams are old news. Nowadays, there are countless newer and more complex con jobs out there, looking to snag even the smartest of us. Email scams look more and more legit, just asking us to click one innocuous link. Sneaky hidden devices are attached to neighborhood ATMs and gas pumps, attempting to skim credit card information.

Fraudsters can be downright brazen.

Recently, Jefferson County investigators found that scammers were making it look as if their calls were originating

from the sheriff ’s department, and used names of real deputies to try to appear legitimate.

The scary truth is that scammers don’t even have to trick you directly any more.

On Jan. 4, thieves broke into a storage facility and stole personal information of more than 500 people, including addresses, dates of birth and medication lists from the CVS pharmacy inside Target at 5071 Kipling in Wheat Ridge.

That data breach, of course, is dwarfed by the constant stream of data-hacking scandals we hear about constantly. Just last month news broke that your Facebook password is likely compromised.

Go change it now, if you haven’t.

Automation also has created much more scamming.

Unfortunately for us, Colorado seems to be a popular hunting ground for the current crop of crooks. The state ranks second, just slightly behind Nevada, in terms of total complaints about fraudulent robocalls, according to the Federal Trade Commission. In fact, Colorado’s attorney general recently identified spam and fraud calls as the number one source of consumer complaint in 2018.

This being tax season, the number of fraud calls we’re all receiving is only going to be increasing.

The mountains are gorgeous, as are the colorful skies we get to see. So it makes me so sad to know what we are doing to our beautiful state and the world. It terrifies me to know that someday, when I have my own family, I may not be able to live here and show them this beauty. And the damage will be irreversible by 2030 if we don’t act now.

significant action right now, it will be too late. Our citizens are already feeling the effects of poor air quality and pollution.

Colorado has always been a leader, so we as a state need to set the example for other states by reducing our carbon pollution. So I call on our state legislator: cut pollution and keep our Colorful Colorado clean by supporting bill 1261. We need action now, before it’s too late.

everal years back, I wrote about how sometimes the style with which you approach something is so damaging to your credibility that it no longer matters what you are trying to say—your message is lost in the sewage of your delivery. The context for that was the Jeffco School Board: whatever reforms they were hoping to bring forward got swallowed up in the dreck of their mistakes, both actual and merely public relations. They were … removed.

I’ve been watching this legislative session with a “dark-mirror” sense of déjà vu.

For the first time in a while, one party has control of all Colorado government, but, it was close: in spite of outspending his opponent by 700 percent, the Governor only won by 6 percent; the State Senate flipped hands by just a two-seat margin; and several House races were so close they didn’t get called the night of the election, including the one in Arvada held by Brianna Titone. You might have thought the narrowness of the election would inspire a moderate, measured approach to governance.

But that’s just not their style, I guess.

Exhibit A: the so-called “Red Flag Bill,” which allows law enforcement to confiscate a person’s possessions — firearms — based on suspicions and evidence given by third parties with no due process granted the “accused.” It passed the Senate this week, even with the Senate President voting against it.

Never mind that almost every law enforcement body in the state has come out against it, it could fall on both Second and Fifth Amendment grounds. But, they have the

Think back with me to all the times Colorado has hosted Presidential candidates, their surrogates, and, even, debates.

Those events guaranteed that Presidential candidates at least know where Colorado is on a map, and, maybe, even understand Michael Alcorn important Colorado issues like water rights and grazing territories.

By signing on to the N.P.V., not only is this legislature saying that they are smarter than the U.S. Constitution, but they are saying that Colorado’s critical nine electoral votes will now be decided by Los Angeles and New York, thereby relegating Colorado to second class status in Presidential elections.

Exhibit C: SB-19-181. If the Red Flag Bill could be written off (with effort) as a policy difference, and N.P.V. as a state asserting its rights under the Constitution to correct a quirk of the Constitutional design, then we’re still within the bounds of normal legislation.

But just five months ago, Jeffco voters — you — defeated Prop 112 by more than 43,000 votes, a 14 percent margin. SB 181 is the legislative version of what you killed in November. But, they have the power, they disagree with you, and they want what they want…

State Senator pleased with work on Colorado’s budget

A

s I have worked on the Joint Budget Committee in the Colorado State Legislature these last several months, I have seen the best of what our deliberative body can and should aspire to be.

When I accepted this role on the JBC, I knew there was a lot at stake.

A budget is not just a financial outline — it is a statement of priorities and principles. It is a dialogue that reflects our values. And after months of blood, sweat and tears (metaphorically, of course), countless JBC meetings, input from the public and discussion of amendments, our budget has passed the Senate with bipartisan support.

The current version of the state budget — the process starts over again in the House — contains the shared values of many distinct viewpoints from every corner of our state. It is not the exact plan that any one of us would have arrived at

In the aggregate, I would describe the style of this legislature in two words: “breathtaking,” and “contemptuous.”

As a student of government, I am forced to admire the efficiency with which they are getting their agenda done, and the discipline of the majority in enforcing its groupthink. Unfortunately, what they want are extreme positions brought by people who know better than you, and your disagreement with them is only worthy of their contempt.

And lastly, get informed. The FTC has a complaint-assistance website to help identify and report scams.

It looks doubtful that the sheer amount of fraud out there is going away any time soon. And so all of us should do what we can to keep ourselves, and our loved ones safe and fraud free.

I am grateful for the work of my colleagues on the panel and for the dedication of the people in the state departments with which we worked. of the committee chamber and let in the voices of the public to share their stories and their vision for our state.

There is still more work to be done now that the budget (known as the Long Bill) has passed the Senate. It must be approved in the House, will likely be amended and will return to the JBC for further deliberation and review before being sent to the Governor for final approval. But if the process of negotiation, accommodation and collaboration continues as it has in the Senate, I am confident that we will deliver a final budget that sets a prudent foundation for Colorado’s prosperity and reflects the vision we have for a prosperous and thriving future.

“I was getting frustrated because I would want a nice glass of wine with dinner, but I was certain to waste Clarke Reader it because I’d only want one glass,” Spaulding explained.

“My husband, Gus, asked me if I was going to waste another bottle of wine and that started me thinking about alternatives.”

Spaulding started exploring the single serve options in the market but couldn’t find something she really enjoyed. She wanted a more premium package and product for the casual drinker and so Wander + Ivy, which offers four wines — rosé, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and a red blend — in 6.3-ounce wine bottles was born.

The October launch was the result of more than a year of research and preparation, which included getting her sommelier certification, branding groundwork and finding vineyards that can offer organic products.

“I was looking for natural and organic ingredients in my wine, and I couldn’t find that in most single-serve options,” Spaulding explained. “I found it really interesting to explore what the organic ingredient movement means for wine. The same reasons people eat organically, they should also drink.”

In the handful of months since she launched Wander + Ivy, Spaulding has already found a home for her wines in about 60 liquor stores in the state, including Littleton, Denver and Wheat Ridge. Her dedication to the local community extends to the company’s standing as an One Percent For the Planet member. This means Wander + Ivy donates 1 percent of gross profits to Colorado charities.

here’s a common theme on listings for Easter egg hunts in the Denver Metro area.

Don’t be late. The events begin precisely on time — and they’re over in a flash.

Cynthia Bauman knows exactly why. When the Golden Kiwanis Club holds its annual Easter egg hunt at Parfet Park, it’s a sight to behold, she said. Volunteers disperse roughly 6,000 colored eggs “scattered like gum drops all over the park.” They divide kids into three age groups, and at 10 a.m. sharp, volunteers ring the bell.

Then chaos, albeit adorable chaos, unfolds.

“At 10:03 it’s over. The eggs are like vacuumed off the lawn. It’s amazing,” Bauman said.

“We have lots of visitors on Easter,” Winter said. “There is no judgment as you come in. Whether you’re here every Sunday or just Easter and Christmas, all are welcome.”

Also in Castle Rock is the annual “Special Egg Hunt” hosted by Front Range Church at Douglas County High School. Organizer Jenifer Prosser says the public event caters to children young and old but also to families with special needs. They hold it on April 13, starting at 11 a.m., so families aren’t overwhelmed with too many events on Easter weekend.

They have traditional egg hunts but also ones designed for mobilityimpaired children, egg hunts that use beepers for visually impaired children, and a sensory-friendly hunt.

They expect about 2,000 people this year. Prosser said they get emails after each event from families whose child was able to attend an egg hunt for the first time because of the inclusive activities.

“We just want to bridge that gap and meet families where they are,” Prosser said.

There are also those who show up on Easter Sunday and show up hungry.

For those families, Donna Charbonnier of Ciancio’s Restaurant in Westminster is ready to take care of them. The eatery located at the Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills is a family operation run by Charbonnier and her brother. For nearly 10 years they

Bauman said they are looking forward to this year’s egg hunt, which takes place on April 20, and are welcoming volunteers. Those who want to help set up can arrive at 8:30 that morning before watching little egg hunters descend on the park.

“Kids are just scooping them into their baskets. They’re so joyful,” she said. “It’s so cute.”

Denver honoring Cesar Chavez People gathered in Denver to remember the late civil rights leader

Snowy conditions halted Denver’s 18th annual Cesar Chavez Day March, but not the celebration.

Politicians, leaders and residents packed into Su Teatro on March 30 in Denver to honor Chavez, a civil rights leader who worked to improve working conditions and wages for workers. On March 25, Denver recognized Cesar Chavez Day — a day that is observed on the last Monday of March every year. Denver City Council approved the holiday in 2001.

“We have to recognize him every day, not just once a year. He really led a movement that brought dignity to workers,” said Lorena Garcia. Garcia is the executive director for Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition, an organization that provides advocacy and training for parents, and a candidate for the U.S. Senate. “That’s why workers have things to fight for and something to fight with that way people aren’t taking advantage of them.”

In the early 1960s, Chavez created the National Farm Workers Association which would become the United

It’s time for teens to start applying for summer jobs It’s the time of year where the school year is wrapping up and teenagers may start thinking about what to do this summer. Instead of just sitting at home and scrolling the iPhone screen, one option is to take advantage of the many job opportunities available today.

Take Pirates Cove for instance. The Englewood water park is currently seeking lifeguards for the summer with plans to open on May 25. Area teenagers have an opportunity to gain valuable experience, and make up to $12.30 an hour.

Brad Anderson, senior facilities supervisor of aquatics for the Town of Englewood, said getting a summer job as a life guard or with their summer services gives teenagers a great sense of team work.

Anderson said the starting age for hiring lifeguards is 15 as long as they can pass certification requirements.

Other summer programs are also in search of summer help, it just takes some searching on metro government websites in communities such as Castle Rock, Parker, Lakewood, Golden and others.

Let’s go fly a kite at annual festival Arvada event celebrates 17 years of outdoor fun

When the Kite Festival in Arvada started in 2002, it provided a way for families to enjoy the outdoors. Today, it is one of the metro area’s biggest celebrations of spring.

“It’s all about families having fun outside,” said Brenda Berg, special events coordinator for the city of Arvada. “It’s not to be a financial burden on anyone. Everyone can get out and enjoy the day.”

The free event, which takes place during National Kite Month, returns to Stenger Soccer Complex Sunday, April 7.

Attendees will have the option to bring their own kites or buy them at the event. Kids can also get in on the fun in the days leading up to the event by attending a kite-making class at Majestic View Nature Center, 7030 Garrison St, Arvada.

“It’s a chance for kids to make their own kite and learn why it’s that shape,” said Mike Dempsey, educator at Majestic View. “It’s getting them a little more involved in the festival when they do their own kite-making.”

Water World puts out call for 2019 staff District looking for 1,000, ages 14 and up STAFF REPORT

Hyland Hills Water World has kicked off its search for more than 1,000 lifeguards, attendants and other summer employees.

Positions are available for the 2019 season for people 14-years-old and older. Jobs include guest services, food services, gift and photo shop attendants, grounds and landscaping teams and lifeguards.

“The Water World job experience is the first job for many kids and we are dedicated to providing a meaningful work experience for everyone that makes the team,” said Water World spokesperson Joann Cortéz.

Water World lifeguards must be certified through Ellis and Associates.

Classes are held on site for those who are not yet certified.

In addition to an hourly wage, benefits include a free season pass, and reward points redeemable for free food, free tickets for friends, free gear and more. Detailed information on available positions, rates of pay, age minimums and job applications are on the Water World website, www.waterworldcolorado.com.

Interviews began in March, with hiring usually completed in April.

Hyland Hills Water World is one of the nation’s largest family water parks and it boasts more than attractions covering 70 acres. The communityowned amusement park is now in its 38th season and it has hosted more than 12 million guests over the years.

Water World has been named one of the best water parks in the world by the Travel Channel and the World Waterpark Association.

Ralston Valley boys lacrosse rewriting program’s history books

ARVADA — Ralston Valley’s boys lacrosse program in no longer in its infant stages.

The Mustangs are in their third season fielding a varsity program.

Ralston Valley made a bit of history March 25 at the North Area Athletic Complex. A 10-8 victory over Legend marked the fourth win of the season for the Mustangs, breaking a previous season-high win total of three.

Ralston Valley went 3-12 last year and 1-14 in its inaugural season in 2017.

“This year is a lot different,” said Ralston Valley junior Ben Takata, a three-year varsity player for the Mustangs. “To have already won more games than last year already is big. We have a lot of freshmen helping out this year, stepping up in leadership roles and playing well for us.”

Takata and freshman Nick Gates led the Mustangs (4-1 record) offensively with three goals each on the Monday night at NAAC. Senior Tanner Spirek, junior Jack Spurlock and freshman Lane Kellogg added a goal each in the victory.

Sophomore goalie Calvin Doucette picked up the victory between the pipes for Ralston Valley against the Titans (2-3).

“It’s nice to get off to a good start and we’re excited about the potential,” Ralston Valley’s second-year coach Nick Lewis said. “(Legend) was a play-

Legend held a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, but Ralston Valley went on a 4-0 run over the span of 10 minutes during the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.

The Titans crept within 7-5 to start the final quarter, but Spurlock, Gates and Takata scored three straight goals in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Legend got a pair of goals by senior Jack Freeman and a score by Caden Meis in the final minutes, but it was too little too late for the Titans.

“We did a good job tonight of keep

fighting and not getting down,” Takata said.

Ralston Valley took a bit of a hiatus during spring break before diving into Class 5A Jeffco League action in early April.

“Hopefully this is the year that we finally turn some heads,” Takata said of the 5A Jeffco League play that begins April 3 against Lakewood. “Hopefully we can catch some people off-guard early this season because some people think we are still a growing program.”

Lewis is pleased with how his team is playing with a style he call ‘we ball’ and not ‘me ball’ with the Mustangs sharing the ball offensively. He is also encouraged with his young talent.

“We’ve got plug and play guys who are impact players,” Lewis said of his young core. “We are playing five to seven freshmen every game.”

Ralston Valley played in the 5A Front Range League last season. Lewis is thrilled to be in the 5A Jeffco with the likes of Columbine, Chatfield, Dakota Ridge, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Bear Creek and Valor Christian.

“We feel like we can compete in that league,” Lewis said. “We know we have our work cut out for us and we have to get a lot better, but we are excited about being in the Jeffco League. Every game is going to be a test.”

Twin sisters Eliza and Nicole Hill, however, have been on two state championship teams in the last 12 months.

Eliza won the state’s No. 2 singles tennis OVERTIME championship for Cherry Creek last spring at the state tennis tournament.

Nicole captured the No. 3 singles title and helped the Bruins win the state team Jim Benton title.

Then, last month the sisters were on the Bruins’ Class 5A state championship girls basketball team.

“It felt amazing, it was so different in basketball,” said Eliza. “For Creek, that was the first state basketball championship. It was such an amazing feeling and my teammates were incredible. For tennis, it was really exciting too, but we’ve been doing that for 35 years.”

According to Nicole, the team aspect of basketball is a big difference from tennis.

“Basketball was really, really fun,” she said. “It was more special to win it in basketball, because in tennis it was really special for me to win an individual title and a team title, but it is so much harder in basketball and there were so many good teams this year.

“Highlands Ranch, Grandview, Valor Christian and Regis were really strong. It was special because Cherry Creek has never won a girls state basketball title.

In tennis we’ve won 35 state titles.

Just to make history in basketball was pretty special. I couldn’t stop smiling for two weeks after winning the basketball state championship.”

Eliza played in 22 games for the basketball team, averaging 1.5 points and 2.4 rebounds. Nicole suffered a concussion in practice and played in just 16 games while averaging 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Nicole hopes to be cleared to play tennis later this spring.

“I have to be honest with you,” said Nicole. “Eliza and I were very, very proud benchwarmers this season. I would say I am better at tennis than basketball but I really love both sports.

“Both are so different but each of them have such amazing qualities that helps the other. Like footwork in basketball helps me stay in shape for tennis and be able to handle all that.

And the mental game in tennis is super helpful for basketball.”

Eliza and Nicole, the 6-foot-1 sophomores, started playing tennis when they were young but it took some prodding to play organized basketball since the Hill family lived in Madrid, Spain for over a decade.

“My whole family are tennis players so I started playing ever since I could hold a racket,” explained Eliza.

“We grew up in Spain. And in Spain it is a little bit different. Not many people are student athletes. You are either going to become an athlete and go pro or maybe get a scholarship and go play Division I tennis in the U.S. or you are going to be a really good student.

“My parents didn’t want that. They grew up in the U.S. and they wanted us to play sports as well as be athletes. There wasn’t a basketball team but Mom went around talking to every single girl and parent that we knew asking them if they would play basketball. We started a girls basketball team. That was in third grade

Faith Christian’s renowned basketball coach steps down to assistant coach Andrew Hasz, also the school’s superintendent, welcomes former alum as head coach

After 20 years of leading a highly successful Faith Christian boys basketball program, Coach Andrew Hasz is stepping down to assistant coach, citing increasingly challenging responsibiliites as the school’s superintendent, a position he assumed in 2017.

Faith alum Abram Ziemer, who played for Hasz from 2003-2007, will take over as head coach.

“I’m grateful to be able to turn the program over to a former player,” Hasz said, “but also one who is willing to let me stick around a bit.”

Ziemer said he is looking forward to the head-coaching opportunity, but also to having “one of the best assistant coaches in the state.”

Hasz began head coaching in 1999, and by 2002 he had secured his first of six 3A boys basketball championships (2002, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012).

During his tenure, the Eagles appeared in seven state title games and racked up 421 career victories. Faith Christian made it to the State Eight 18 times in 20 years, the Final Four 13

The Colorado High School Sports Association named Hasz the 3A Coach of the Year in 2002. He also was inducted in the Metropolitan District Hall of Fame.

“A bittersweet part of this season is thinking back over the 20 years,” Hasz said. “There’s some amazing kids that we’ve coached. And we’re so proud of them.”

For Hasz, coaching was so much more than what happened on the court. His favorite part was the relationships with players.

“He was pretty influential, not only as a coach, but he helped me become the man I am today,” said Jordan Stone, a 2009 Faith graduate. “He goes above and beyond what a coach’s duties are. I knew I could contact him at any time and he was willing to be open

and honest with anything in my life, even beyond basketball. That’s what made him such a great coach.”

When Hasz became superintendent of Faith Christian Academy in 2017, his schedule became increasingly challenging. These increased responsibilities influenced his decision to step down as head basketball coach, he said.

Ziemer, 30, played basketball at Colorado Christian University and worked as assistant basketball coach at Jefferson Academy for the past six years.

He found a spot on staff at Faith this school year as the high school dean of students and the assistant athletic director.
