Floor of Jeffco jail reopened to house inmates exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms 36 inmates are being housed in isolated cells

The Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office has reopened a portion of the seventh floor of the county jail and is using it to house inmates that are showing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

JCSO Public Information Officer Michael Taplin said the jail has reopened two modules on the seventh floor — one for men and one for women — after the floor was closed at the start of the year as a result of county budget cuts.

As of March 30, 31 inmates are being housed in isolation at the jail related to COVID-19. However, Taplin said just two of those inmates are showing a symptom of the disease while the rest are being held there because of inmates with either inmates or people in the community who have showed symptoms.

That number of inmates in isolation related to COVID-19 is up from three on March 16 but down from 36 on March 24. Unlike in the rest of the jail, all inmates being housed on the seventh floor are isolated in individual cells.

Taplin said inmates are being moved to the seventh floor if they exhibit any of the identified symptoms of COVID-19, which include coughing, a fever and respiratory issues. They are recommended for a test if they exhibit more than one

of the symptoms. So far, one JCSO inmate has been tested for the virus but results have not been received back due to a testing backlog. However, that inmate has since bonded out of jail.

In an effort to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading within the jail, the Sheriff ’s Office also announced on March 19 that it would release all inmates who have served a minimum of 50 percent of their sentence for non-violent crimes that do not involve the Victim’s Rights Act. 36 inmates were released under the order, a number which Taplin said helped to bring the jail to “well under” its current operating capacity.

As of March 31, the population of the jail was at right around 775. That number was also down from just under 900 on March 24, Taplin said.

“Being law enforcement, the last thing we want to do is let someone go early who has violated a law after we have put all the work in to investigating and going through a court process and then the judge sentencing said person to a certain amount of time in jail,” said Taplin. “But it’s what we are doing to help with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The sheriff ’s office has released inmates from the jail on several occasions in accordance with those criteria when the jail was close to reaching its operational capacity following the closure of the seventh floor.

about the risk posed by COVID-19 and the need to wash hands regularly and perform other preventative measures.

However, Taplin said jail staff does not have the ability to require inmates to take any precautions.

Inmates generally have the ability to maintain six feet of distance while they are awake. However, the jail is not able to ensure six feet of distance between beds.

District Attorney’s Office The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which handles prosecution in Jefferson and Gilpin counties,

has also announced that it is taking steps to help reduce the number of inmates in the jail. Those steps include actively reviewing files to identify those offenders who may be of least risk to the community and offering them a personal recognizance bond and a continued court date. Emergency hearings were also held by judges to move that process forward.

“This process is not as simple as it may sound,” wrote Pam Russell, the Public Information Officer for the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. “It is not possible in every case to systematically reschedule a hearing; there may be legal issues such as the right to speedy trial and the constitutional rights of crime victims.”

The DA’s office also has announced that it is working with Jeffrey Pilk-

ington, the chief judge of the First Judicial District, to comply with an order from the Colorado Supreme Court that all criminal and civil trials be rescheduled. The order also recommends that all other hearings be rescheduled whenever, possible.

“This is a tremendous undertaking,” said First Judicial District Attorney Pete Weir in a statement.

“The courts in Jefferson and Gilpin counties are working hard to try to resolve the issue of reducing the risk of exposure for everyone involved and at the same time ensuring the safety of our community.”

Despite the changes, the District Attorney’s office continues to operate and remain open to law enforcement and officers of the court. It’s offices are not currently open to the public.

The Real Estate Market Is Still Active, Meeting Needs of Both Buyers and Sellers

The Denver real estate market, as reflected in the Denver MLS, showed continued activity this past week, despite the imposition of a statewide stay-athome order by Gov. Polis on Tuesday.

To my surprise, despite the growing COVID-19 threat with all its likely economic impacts, a total of 1,799 listings went “active” on REcolorado last week — that is, between Sunday the 22nd and Saturday the 28th.

Although 53 of those new listings were taken off the market the same week — probably because of the virus — and 24 of them were sold off the MLS before being entered, that left 1,722 new listings on the market by the end of the week, and 387 or 22.5% of them were under contract the same week.

That does not sound to me like a real estate market that is stalling because of the COVID-19 virus. It makes me wonder about those 53 listings that were pulled off the MLS. How many of them would have been under contract by now had the sellers and their listing agents not been overly cautious?

The homes that went under contract within their first week on the MLS ranged from a 2-bedroom, 1-bath condo for $100,000 in the Windsor Gardens senior community south of Lowry to a 4bedroom, 4-bath home for $1.3 million in the foothills northwest of Boulder.

The median price of those quick-selling

homes was $425,000.

To see how last week compared to “normal,” I researched the listings that went active on REcolorado during the same seven days in 2019, and here’s what I found: Surprisingly, slightly fewer homes went active on Denver’s MLS during the same 7 days a year ago — 1,727. Of those, only 12 of them were taken off the MLS that same week. Another 73 listings were entered as “sold” that week. Of the remaining 1,642 listings, 670 or 40.8% went under contract within a week. That’s much higher than the 22.5% this year, but consistent with the slowing of the market which we saw before the advent of the virus. The listings that went under contract within 7 days last year ranged from a $95,000 condo in Aurora to a $1.5 million dollar 6-bedroom home in South Boulder. The median listing price was $395,000.

As you might guess, I was concerned about whether the new Lakewood ranch featured in last week’s ad would get any showings, since showings didn’t begin until Friday, three days after Gov. Polis instituted the stay-at-home order. I needn’t have worried. We had five showings

by Sunday, with one agent calling to ask if we had any offers yet because his buyer was interested in it.

Inspectors are still inspecting, but they don’t want buyers or agents in the house with them. Title companies are still doing their title searches and conducting closings, albeit with attention to sanitizing rooms and some physical distancing.

Mortgage companies are still doing their jobs, as are the appraisers they hire.

Meanwhile, real estate brokers like us are still showing homes, writing contracts, negotiating inspection issues just as we always have — that is, by phone and email — and going to closings, al-

though even that could be more virtual, now that Gov. Polis has issued an executive order saying that Notaries can work virtually.

What’s different is the cancelation of all kinds of meetings, open houses, and in-person continuing education classes (which are still available online).

That keeps us all at home, which is where most brokers work anyway, but with fewer reasons to leave. I’m walking the dog more than ever. My Apple watch tells me that I completed all three activity rings last week. Woohoo!

Bottom line: I’m sort of liking this, although I do look forward to getting back to normal — whatever that means!

How We Are Coping With COVID-19 Guidelines

All in all, then, this market continues to surprise me. Yes, it is slower in terms of activity, but there are still a lot of serious buyers willing and able to make offers on new listings. Those buyers who are unable or afraid to make an offer,

whether for economic or health reasons, are not calling us. Agents might appreciate the fact that only serious and qualified buyers are going to call about seeing homes for sale.

Meanwhile, sellers who want to sell should recognize that there are serious and qualified buyers out there and consider putting their home on the market.

The practice of real estate has come a long way from the days when homes were only listed in books the size of a big-city telephone directory. (You do remember telephone directories, don’t you?)

Back then life was simpler, but that depends on how you define “simpler.”

Purchase contracts were one or two pages instead of 20 pages, but they had to be hand delivered, as did subsequent documents such as inspection and appraisal objections. Mortgage applications and information was all faxed, if not delivered in person.

Actually, life is simpler today. All documents are typically emailed back and forth and signed electronically, except for closing (which has to be done in front of a Notary).

As you know, homes for sale can now be searched and viewed online. An inperson showing or two is common before submitting an offer, but not always necessary. Because our narrated video tours are just like an in-person showing, led by the listing agent, I’ve had out-ofstate or even out-of-country buyers ask me to create a purchase contract, knowing that they can always terminate (which they haven’t) when they fly in for the home inspection.

Facetime is also a great tool for showing homes. When one of our own buyers

from out of state expresses interest in a home which they learned about from an MLS email alert — another new technology tool — our agent will use Facetime or take our video camera and do a narrated walk through of that listing (because the listing agent did not create such a tour), and post it on YouTube as a private or unlisted video, and send a link for it to the buyer.

Zoom came along just in time for COVID-19, replacing GoToMeeting as the “go to” software for virtual meetings. A classmate from long ago sent me a link for a virtual 6-person band performance of an adaptation of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” cut, with COVID19 lyrics. What a hoot!

Even this column is made possible by technology that wasn’t available when I was a newspaper publisher. I create it on my laptop using MS Publisher, create a PDF of it, and send it to the newspaper on deadline, which is two days before you see it in print. Then I post it on our blog, www.GoldenREblog.com, which has hundreds of subscribers, and email it to 900 people who have chosen to receive it that way because they no longer subscribe to a printed newspaper.

Of course, this newspaper, like most, is also available in a “digital replica edition” on its website, which reaches even more readers. I love technology!

Bike businesses booming during COVID-19 crisis Owners cite increase in outdoor recreation, public support

Every year, March marks the month when business picks up for Nate Glore, owner of Colorado Cycle Dynamics in Arvada. And in the midst of this year’s COVID-19 pandemic, he was relieved when sales not only increased as usual — they climbed higher than expected.

For March 2020, the shop at 5545 Olde Wadsworth Blvd. was on track to make at least 1.5 times as many sales, and potentially double the sales, that it made in March 2019.

Across town, The Bicycle Shack, 16255 W. 64th Ave., has seen a similar amount of growth in the past month.

Where the shop typically has about 10-15 customers a day, since the pandemic started sparking shutdowns of schools and businesses across the state, anywhere from 30 to 50 customers have been visiting the store

each day, said co-owner Paul Rodriguez.

“People have great support for small businesses here,” he said. “And everybody loves the outdoors. Nobody wants to be stuck inside, especially with this beautiful weather.”

As workout options have continued to become limited and more residents have turned to outdoor recreation, the bike shops, which are considered essential under current stay-at-home orders, represent two local businesses that have seen a rare increase in business over the past few weeks.

“I’d say across the board, everybody’s coming in, whether that’s our mountain bike customers or a mom or dad,” Glore said. “We’re seeing people get the bikes out of the shed that they haven’t ridden in years and dust them off.”

The uptick in bicyclists can be seen across local trails, where regular cyclists like Ed Rothschild, a member of local group Bike Friendly Arvada, says he has noticed a significant change in the number of people out enjoying a bike ride each day.

“There are a lot of bikes

out there. I rode to work yesterday and the trails were so busy on my ride home, I went back to the streets,” Rothschild said. “I think it is a function of more people home, more people needing to get out and exercise and some, like my business — where we are opening later and closing earlier — making it easier to bike.”

Rothschild said he expects a good turnout at the group’s first scheduled community bike ride of the year, which will take place April 18.

In the meantime, as Glore and Rodriguez continue to make sales, they’re also prepared to make adjustments if the public health crisis grows worse, such as by relying more on pickup or by-appointment services.

For now, the shops are focusing on smaller adjustments, like frequently disinfecting surfaces and ensuring customers practice social distancing, as residents continue to show up in support of the local businesses.

“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from our customers,” Rodriguez said.

“At the end of the day, we’ve got to stay open for them.”

State issues stay-at-home order State announces order to last through at least April 11

After about two weeks of escalating orders and guidance from the state, and more Colorado counties issuing their own stay-at-home orders, Gov. Jared Polis invoked Americans’ sacrifice in World War II as he announced a statewide stay-at-home order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Referencing how Americans gave up normal life to support that war effort, Polis framed the spread of coronavirus in dire, historical terms.

“Americans have been called on to serve our country time and time again,” Polis said at a March 25 news conference. “You have the chance to be a hero and save thousands of lives by staying home.”

As of March 25, Colorado’s tally of COVID-19 cases rose to nearly 1,100 across 36 counties, with more than 8,000 people tested and 19 deaths.

Earlier on March 25, three Denver metro area public health departments issued stay-at-home orders, covering Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Jefferson and Boulder counties.

With the state order in place, the health departments covering Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson counties rescinded their stay-at-home orders on March 26.

What the order says Under the order, Coloradans must stay home except to leave for certain necessities, such as shopping for groceries or seeking medical care.

Caring for a family member or pet in another household, or for livestock at a location other than a person’s home, are allowed.

Caring for a vulnerable person — anyone who is older than 60, has a disability or has a serious underlying health condition — at another household is also permitted.

On March 25, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued a statewide stay-at-home order.

The statewide order prohibits all public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside of a “residence,” except for during “essential” activities. Gatherings of members living in the same residence are allowed.

Other allowed actions include obtaining medication or medical supplies, collecting supplies needed to work from home, The order also permits walking, biking or other outdoor activity. People must remain at least 6 feet apart from others.

State parks will remain open, but all playgrounds, picnic areas and “other similar areas conducive to public gathering” will be closed.

People at high risk of severe illness from COVID-19 — adults 60 or older and people with serious underlying conditions — and those who are sick must not leave home except to receive medical care. Those with symptoms of COVID-19 must self-isolate until their symptoms cease or until they have a negative test result.

People also may travel to collect materials for online class or other remote learning, or to receive meals or any related services from educational institutions. Travel to provide or access “necessary” activities or “critical businesses” is permitted.

Employees in “critical businesses” may still go to work, but those businesses must comply with social distancing requirements, which generally means staying 6 feet apart from others.

Stay-at-home violations could result in jail, but officials hope to avoid that

Violating Colorado’s statewide stay-at-home order could result in a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment in a county jail for up to one year.

But Coloradans likely won’t see law enforcement conduct road checkpoints or pull over drivers or pedestrians to enforce the state’s stay-at-home order.

When asked about such measures, Mike Willis, the State Emergency Operations Center’s director, said the state encourages voluntary compliance.

“I think (the) big thing here is for all of us to do our part and encourage our neighbors to do their part, not ask our law enforcement to do

George Brauchler, district attorney for Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties, echoed that sentiment in a news release.

“These rules and laws need to be complied with, but the fear should not be that you will be (dragged) into court to face criminal charges,” Brauchler said. “That is a matter of last, last, last resort.”

To make online learning work, teachers get creative Jeffco elective, elementary teachers brainstorm activities during remote learning period

Every year at Arvada’s Drake Middle School, students taking family and consumer science look forward to the cooking unit above all. So, when teacher Kristina Herrin learned that the unit would coincide with Jeffco’s weeks-long period of remote learning, during which school is taking place completely online, she began to brainstorm alternatives to keep the kids from missing out.

Already, the list of potential projects is extensive. During week one, students created videos and digital books about kitchen safety and in the weeks to come, may create videos showcasing their kitchen knife skills using home utensils and Play-Doh, Herrin said.

If the teacher can coordinate with families and the principal, students may also be able to submit a video of their home-cooking — “At the very least, I’m going to make them do dishes,” Herrin said.

As Jeffco Public Schools has adjusted to the ongoing public health crisis created by COVID-19, which has forced widespread closures across the state and country, including closures of Jeffco’s school buildings, teachers and administrators have spent hours to take school online.

For all teachers, and especially for those who rely heavily on an in-person environment — like Herrin and other elective teachers, elementary school educators and after-school club sponsors — the transition has required some outside-the-box thinking.

“It’s pretty amazing. We all had to completely alter how we deliver our instructions overnight, and we just did it,” Herrin said. “I didn’t hear from any teacher `I can’t and I won’t do it.’ We’re making the most of it.”

Based on the state’s direction, remote learning could potentially extend throughout the remainder of the school year.

Upon learning that the new system would last through April 17 or longer — the district had originally prepared for just one remote learning week — many Jeffco teachers, like Sarah Lundie at Lasley Elementary in Lakewood, sprang into action to reevaluate their plans.

“We had thought this one week was going to be the only week, so we just did a review with the kids,” she said.

“Now we’re starting to teach new content because we realize this is not a short-term thing. We’re using our standards we normally would.”

With a focus on keeping her secondgraders engaged enough to master new content, Lundie has been finding ways to keep the learning exciting, she said.

One strategy that worked well the first week was a `virtual field trip’ to the San Diego Zoo, through which students could explore the zoo through videos on the zoo’s website.

“Some of them got really creative and dressed up. I’m trying to keep it interesting and different for them,”

Lundie said.

At Weber Elementary in Arvada, some of the biggest challenges have faced the school’s specials teachers, who teach classes like art, music and PE. However, the teachers have more than risen to the task, said parent Janesa Lockhart, whose daughter Bella is a Weber fifth-grader.

“For PE, she’s doing Zumba videos.

For music, they’ve been talking about doing a song parody (video), and they’ve been researching a song for that,” she said.

Staying social Meanwhile, Bella’s classroom teacher has focused on making sure students get into the swing of learning new material and don’t feel as though they’ve lost a connection with their teacher. To help, the fifth-grade teacher uploads daily 20-minute videos of herself reading a book aloud.

“She gets to watch her teacher read and she loves it. I know the biggest thing she misses is socializing,” Lockhart said.

Similarly, Lundie has worked to stay in touch with her students in a number of ways, such as by providing feedback on students’ work through audio recordings, as opposed to simply writing her comments out.

At the high school level, students are

also feeling the social impact — and it’s more than just their in-person classes that have moved into the digital world. After-school clubs have also had to figure out whether, and how, to continue, said science teacher Sam Long, a sponsor of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Westminster’s Standley Lake High School.

“We have students who want to be in school because they don’t have positive experiences at home. This situation doesn’t change existing family dynamics,” he said. “For those students, it may be an entirely different life at school and at home.”

Hoping to continue to give students an outlet, the club has organized for two weekly video chats over online platform Zoom so students can stay connected, Long said. “This is a way to check in and share stories.”

He added that the club and the school at large are prepared to adapt and add new digital tools when necessary, particularly now that they have a week of remote learning under their belts to help them evaluate what’s worked well and what could be done differently.

And Herrin agreed: “Teachers are very innovative and adaptable. We’re just going to continue to be creative,” she said. “We’ll figure it out day by day.”

In addition to taking more than 150 schools, all operating as normal the week of March 9, and transferring them online for the district’s first day of remote learning March 17, Jeffco Public Schools also found itself balancing the nutritional needs of families amid the COVID-19 crisis.

In the same timeframe that the district transitioned to remote learning, it also organized an operation to serve low-income families in the community, some of whom rely on schools to serve their children through the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.

By March 16, Jeffco’s Grab and Go meal sites were up and running, serving breakfast and lunch to any and all community members in need. The program will run through the duration of remote learning.

After the first two weeks of the new approach to school food service, Erika Edwards, director of operations for Jeffco’s Food and Nutrition Services, outlines the details of the operation and who it has helped:

During this time of school building closure, this need does not disappear and actually, the need for healthy meals will likely increase. With this service, we’re able to provide a bit of stability for our families during this uncertain time.

Have you heard back from families taking part?

The sentiment I hear most from the families is that they are grateful for the meals, especially at a time when they aren’t sure of so many other things. It was reassuring for them to know they could go to a familiar and comfortable place to pick up a meal.

With sports seasons cut short, Faith Christian school community among those deeply affected

I

f one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.

— Henry David Thoreau This quote may never be more true than in the last few weeks for high school athletics in Colorado. The normal ebbs and flows of a school year and sports season have given way to the unexpected shut down of school and Nathan Mauldin sports. No school in Colorado is immune to what has happened these last few weeks or the uncertainty of what is to come in the days ahead. Let me start by saying that I can’t argue with decisions made by the powers that be in our amazing state and with the Colorado High School Athletics Association (CHSAA). There were and are no easy decisions and whatever direction is chosen is open to criticism and scrutiny.

Faith Christian boys basketball was two steps away from their seventh state basketball championship but on March 12 the season was cancelled. Faith had just defeated Alamosa High School 55-40 in the

quarterfinals in front of a near empty gym at Denver University.

Spirits were obviously high and the boys knew they were going to get a rematch with Sterling for the right to advance to a championship game.

The next morning all that was gone, Without a loss, the season was over.

I felt the worst for the players, coaches and parents of the 2020 seniors. You quickly realize as a senior that every game in the state tournament could be your last, that you only have today. So I can imagine after winning on Thursday they breathed a sigh of relief to fight another day never expecting the season would end so abruptly. It took a few days to wrap their minds around it, but kids are resilient and will move on. Coaches and parents will always have the “what if ’s” of the 2020 season. That is a fair emotion and one, leading to conversations around the dinner table for years to come. A Final Four finish is nothing to be sad about, winning 21 games is something to be proud of, and not losing your last game was their goal from the beginning of the season. As hard it was, they accomplished pretty much all of their goals, and the one they didn’t no one in the state did either. It is turning lemons into lemonade that can make times like these a little easier to swallow.

So what about Spring sports?

CHSAA ruled that all Spring High School sports (baseball, club volley-

ball, girls soccer, track and field and trap shooting) were to go on hiatus until at least April 18. Spring sports has always been a volatile time with weather in Colorado but this is another natural occurrence we have no control over.

What some people fail to realize is that today sports and preparation for sports almost never stop. The basketball team had been playing as a group since last spring. So when their season ended, that ended an 11 month journey as a group. Baseball for example at Faith has been throwing and hitting since September, and so the excitement to get outside and finally play was palpable. The Eagles were even able to play a regular season game on March 11, defeated The Academy 7-0.

Track and Field and Girls Soccer put in the work but were unable to even have one game or meet before their season was pushed back.

Coaches and players realize that April 18 is a date that has no certainty, no guarantees and that the season hangs in the balance.

So what now? That is the question for more than sports. We all need to have the perspective that there are so many greater issues to worry about than a game but for kids sports are a big part of their life.

Sports supply an outlet for all athletes to use skills and accumulate life experiences outside of the classroom. Sports are a way to express abilities and talents that many have

worked on since they were little boys and girls. Sports provide an avenue for possible collegiate and professional jobs that one day will allow them to make a living. The rules CHSAA laid down prohibit coach-led practices and so whatever preparation can be done is going to be done by the players themselves.

Players have to take the reins, and prepare as though the season will happen, without the guarantee that it will. This is another life lesson these kids didn’t realize they would learn this year. Preparing for something that may never happen but hoping that it will — what a skill.

Our hope as coaches is that these spring athletes get some kind of season, even if it is just a few weeks.

They want just a chance to compete together, a chance to apply their hard work in a game situation.

Seniors I feel your anxiousness but I want you to know that you can still leave a legacy at your school.

Show everyone that hard work never goes to waste and that doing something because you love it is very rewarding. I hope that very soon I will be able to publish an article reporting on the fantastic achievements of Faith Christian athletes on the field.

If I don’t get that chance I pray the lessons we all will learn this spring will make us better equipped for success in the future.

Remembering Clive Cussler STAFF REPORT

New York Times best-selling author, underwater explorer and the man who established the automobile collection on display at Arvada’s Cussler Museum, Clive Cussler, passed away at age 88 on Feb. 24, 2020.

The adventure novelist published more than six dozen books over the course of his literary career and sold more than 100 million copies of his books, Cussler’s obituary says. His books have been named to the New York Times best-seller list more than 20 times.

Additionally, Cussler himself was an adventurer who led underwater expeditions, including an expedition that discovered the remains of a Confederate Civil War ship in the Mississippi River, the obituary states.

Cussler’s collection of more than 100 cars, from a time period between 1906 and 1965, is on display at the Cussler Museum, 14959 W. 69th Ave. The museum is open May through September.

“Clive’s memory will live on through his captivating adventure novels,” said a statement from the museum, “and the astonishing collection of classic cars displayed here at the Cussler Museum.”

Wheat Ridge drive-thru COVID-19 testing STAFF REPORT

In coordination with state efforts, STRIDE Community Health Center expanded its drive-thru COVID-19 testing to a Wheat Ridge March 31-April 4.

The testing will be done at the STRIDE Community Health Clinic Jeffco Family Health Services Center.

Before proceeding through the drivethru test, patients will be asked if they are showing symptoms such as fever, chills, cough or shortness of breath.

Only those with likely symptoms will

be tested.

Visitors are asked to drive in from the center’s northern entrance along Wadesworth Boulevard. The center is located at 7495 W 29th Ave., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.

The drive-thru will be open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. during the week, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the last day of service on Saturday, April 4.

Drive-thru testing is available to the general public. The testing is offered regardless of insurance, and there is no co-pay collected at the time of the test.

Q&A with Centura Health about preparing for a COVID-19 surge Centura Health owns St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood

As cases of COVID-19 continue to surge each day, St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood is preparing for a possible influx of more patients.

There have been 97 confirmed cases of the virus in Jefferson County as of March 26, and to help combat the spread, St. Anthony Hospital is not allowing any visitors for patients who have COVID-19. All other hospital visitors are required to get their temperature checked, be screened using standardized questions and must check in at the front desk. If visitors are healthy, they receive a sticker that is dated.

The hospital can hold 237 people and is owned by Centura Health, a health care provider that owns 17 hospitals in Colorado and Kansas.

Centura Health Denver Metro Group Vice President and Physician Executive Steve Cobb said the organization is working hard on advising people to stay home Cobb and to practice social distancing in an effort to flatten the curve — the idea that reducing social gatherings and closing businesses and schools can slow down the spread of COVID-19.

Elective surgeries, like getting a hip replacement, are postponed in Colorado until April 14 to give hospitals additional resources. Cobb said St.

Anthony Hospital is in a position to be used to take an overflow of patients that have COVID-19 or other illnesses.

Centura Health is working with its physician partners, administrators and leaders at every one of its hospitals to have a surge plan.

Cobb fielded questions on March 25 from the Lakewood Sentinel about Centura Health’s access to supplies, staff and other questions. Here is what Cobb had to say.

What does the outlook on equipment and supplies look like?

We have the capacity to do all the work we need to do, but we need to expand it. We need more ventilators, and we are acquiring those. We’ve acquired more hospital beds, although we have a lot more in reserve that we can deploy. Personal protective equipment, as you’ve seen nationally remains an issue, so we have plans following U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on how to reuse personal protective equipment if we start running low. And all of those plans are in place, but boy we would love to see what the plan is for distributing the Strategic National Stockpile in each county, and I haven’t heard anything about that.

I’m interested to see what happens with the auto industry and their pledge to produce more ventilators.

Those are not easy machines to make, and I expect there are upstream supply issues in getting what is needed to make ventilators. I don’t have a direct line of site into that, but in all of our communities, we need to be prepared to do more.

And then there is the issue of testing. We have to increase our testing capacity and our turnaround times. We are still seeing very long turnaround

times from commercial labs and the state. That has got to get better.

How do you think your staff are holding up?

I think they are amazing. More so than workload, we just have a lot of fear out there. There is a lot that is not known about this virus; it is new. None of us have ever been in a pandemic before, and so even in spite of that fear, the majority of our physicians, clinicians, nurses, respiratory therapists — they are just showing up to work every day and being heroes.

They are doing a great job in keeping each other encouraged, and the thing we are managing more so than folks being overworked, although that day is coming too, is just being afraid.

We’re helping them understand the facts, how to protect themselves and how to take care of patients in a great way. In general, people are really pulling together.

Do you expect St. Anthony to reach full capacity?

It is really difficult to predict when we are going to see a big surge in patients, and so much of that depends on how well we have mitigated the spread of the virus. Hopefully we can suppress it with pretty extreme social distancing measures, county by county.

I think what we are imagining though is sometime in the next week we will see a pretty big increase in volume, and St. Anthony is such an important hospital to Lakewood.

We’ll expand its capacity for caring as best as we can. We’ll even do creative things like using OrthoColorado (a Lakewood hospital that is designed for orthopedic patients), our sister SEE HOSPITAL, P10

Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge turning to community for supply donations SLC Health has also launched a medical mask production effort STAFF REPORT

As Wheat Ridge’s Lutheran Medical Center continues to prep for an influx of COVID-19 patients and an accompanying shortage of the essential supplies necessary to treat them, it is turning to the community for help.

SLC Health, which operates Lutheran Medical Center and three other hospitals on the Front Range, is now engaged in several ongoing efforts to support its health care pro-

viders with equipment and supplies, including community drives and other efforts put together by associates.

AS SLC aims to ensure it has enough hospital masks, it has launched “Operation We Can Sew It,” an effort to enlist members of the greater Denver community in the production of surgical masks that can be used in hospitals. Those looking to help sew masks can sign up on the Operation We Can Sew It website, they will be sent a pattern and instructions for how to begin sewing a mask. According to the website, the masks are approved for hospital use.

According to Liz Baker, the marketing manager at Lutheran, the hospital is also currently producing both sterile wrap and masks at Lutheran.

In addition, Lutheran is also accepting donations of new, unused and unopened medical supplies.

Those supplies include gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, hand sanitizer and disposable gowns. A full list of supplies can be found at slchealth.org/donate-supplies/. The hospital has set up a donation spot where supplies can be dropped off with no personal contact. Donations are currently being accepted on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Our health care workers, like many other first responders, are on the front lines every day,” Baker said in an email. “The Lutheran team is putting every effort into caring for their patients and each other during this time, and they are grateful for the support they are receiving.”

RTD approves plan to reduce services starting April 19 Changes include package originally scheduled for May, plus weekend service levels in response to COVID-19 STAFF REPORT

Service changes originally planned for May, along with a service-reduction plan to address COVID-19, were approved March 24 by the Regional Transportation District’s Board of Directors.

According to a news release, the approved changes will reduce the agency’s bus, light rail and special services starting April 19.

The extensive package of May service changes would originally have taken effect May 17, the release said.

However, a special board meeting was called to address COVID-19 by moving to the weekend service outlined in the May service changes. The COVID-19

hospital to St. Anthony, which isn’t going to be doing a lot of elective surgery. We’ll repurpose that hospital, and we’ll use staff to get it open to take care of overflow.

Do you have the staff needed for a possible surge?

Yeah, I think we have a lot of folks who have been in health care who are committed to see patients that we can redeploy. Some nurses who work in orthopedics have the capacity to work in intensive care units. We have gathered a list of who those people are so we can redeploy them. There are a lot of health care workers who

The initial changes shift most bus service to a Saturday schedule and light rail service to a Sunday schedule as outlined in the May service change plan. This is in response to a 70% decrease in ridership resulting from the spread of COVID-19, the release said. The weekend levels of service that were approved reduce service by about 40 percent from current levels.

“The current decrease in RTD ridership is unrivaled in the agency’s hisare not working right now because of the restriction on elective surgeries. That is a good blatant work force to use.

I think beyond that, we have a lot of people who were traditional health care workers that got out of health care because they can make more money in business or as an entrepreneur. And now with everything closed down, we’re bringing those people back to the workforce and making sure they have the correct credentials and capacities to take care of patients. We’re working with all sorts of community organizations to try to get those folks back in, including physicians. We have a lot of plans.

tory, and by taking this action, we exercise responsibility and care for our employees and our customers,” RTD Interim General Manager and CEO Paul J. Ballard said in the release.

“This also allows us to continue to serve those who rely on us, including health care and food service workers and others who are critical to fighting this crisis, while also giving us flexibility to restore service as ridership returns.”

Ballard said the reduced service levels will remain in effect through Sept.

RTD’s commuter rail lines — University of Colorado A Line, B Line and G Line — will continue to run at current service levels, because they are operated by Denver Transit Partners, a private concessionaire, according to the news release.

The governor acknowledged on March 22 that it’s unrealistic for law enforcement to ensure people are complying with a stay-at-home order, but he hopes that Coloradans’ concern for their lives and their loved ones will lead them to comply with the public health order.

Preparing for a surge The stay-at-home order is intended to buy the state more time to increase its health care capacity before an inevitable surge in patients due to COVID-19, Polis said. Adding more ventilators and health care professionals to the workforce who aren’t currently working in the field takes time, he said.

On the question of whether the peak of the virus’ spread would come before April 11, when the stay-at-home order ends, Polis said it’s possible that the order could last longer and that the state will make that call based on data it continues to gather about the virus’ spread.

Polis again mentioned his goal of mass testing much larger numbers of Coloradans to more accurately quarantine — rather than shutting down large sections of society — again referencing South Korea and Taiwan.

Such an effort could take weeks or perhaps months to be ready, he has said.

n Feb. 14, I posted the following to Facebook: “Hi Friends! I have decided to take a hiatus from Facebook, for a variety of reasons ... weariness chief among them. I’ll be deactivating my account this weekend. Sorry to miss your updates and messages. If you’d like to keep in touch via email, text, etc., and you don’t have that info, please private message me soon.

Ciao!”

Reactions to this announcement were gratifying and supportive … we’ll miss you but we get it. Some suggested I block notifications but not go complete deactivation mode.

As it turns out, I got distracted that par-

ticular weekend and never got around to deactivating my account. I also neglected to block notifications so Facebook emails and texts kept buzzing with updates. (I don’t remember granting permission to receive texts … probably an opt-out thing vs. saying, yes, I want my phone to blow up.)

I ignored those notifications, even the birthday reminders, which – aside from sharing these columns – are my favorite feature of Facebook. I let notifications glide by, out of sight, even those in which I was tagged … kind of like putting myself on permanent “away” status.

My decision to leave Facebook was indeed weariness, weariness driven primarily by politics. I found that being outraged and

obsessively passionate about events out of my control – such as the impeachment proceedings – were particularly toxic to my well-being.

Add in the primary race. The surge in racial violence. The grotesque Weinstein trial. The continuing debacle on the border.

Lies, lies, lies, and more lies.

I was done. I stopped clicking on New York Times headlines and eschewed the local and national news. I issued my Facebook declaration.

Going to one trash hauler is a decision that should be made by Arvada citizens and not the city council alone.

Day Nine (2): My sister called. She was looking for some ideas about things to do during lockdown. Apparently, she watched Netflix. All of it.

Day Ten: Look, if we all have to be in social isolation, why doesn’t Congress? Phase one relief gets held up because some Republicans have to have a moment to grandstand; 72 hours of negotiations get wasted because the Democrats filibuster so they can grandstand; 48 hours later the Democrats hop off their grandstand, apparently after seeing a poll or two; two days later, a Republican forces Representatives to race back to Washington so he can grandstand a little, too.

Is it just me, or should Congress be forced to work from home? I’m betting those grandstands get a lot less comfortable when the people whose lives you’re messing with see you at the grocery store.

Also, Day Ten: boredom must be setting in. I’m actually paying close attention to Congress.

Day Eleven: just received the news that a friend of mine is in the I.C.U. with complications from the Wuhan coronavirus.

Susan Elizabeth Kumpf (Alexander) April 30, 1941 - March 21, 2020

Susan Elizabeth Kumpf, Age 78, passed on Saturday March 21st in her home in Lakewood, surrounded by her family, and beloved dogs. Susan was born to the late Robert Alexander and Vivian (Pleydell Pearce) Alexander in Cleveland, Ohio. She is survived by her partner Larry Dodson, her children; Lisa Kumpf and her partner Yvonne Tafoya, Kari (Kumpf) Ross, Rob and Mandy (Cunningham) Kumpf; her grandchildren, Luke and Adam Murphy, Alex and Zachary Ross and Will and Cole Kumpf; her great grandchildren Jax, Marvel, Cadence and Tristen Murphy.

Susan was raised in North Olmsted, Ohio, and attended Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.

Susan went on to be an elementary school teacher after college, following the footsteps of her mother. During her time in college, she met her children’s father, Howard Kumpf. The two were wed in 1964, and began a family in Bay Village, Ohio. The family moved to

Lakewood, Colorado in the fall of 1973, and purchased the house that Susan called home until the time of her passing.

Susan transitioned from being a stay home mom, and taking classes at Red Rocks Community College, to being an administrative assistant and eventually working as the Student Records Coordinator. When she retired, she had served continuously at RRCC for 35 years. (She loved her job, and was well respected by students and staff alike.) In retirement Susan enjoyed time in her many gardens, walking her dogs (Ralph and Addie) and spending time with Larry and the rest of her family.

A private memorial will be held for the family at a later date.

A donation to local blood banks in honor of Susan are appreciated. For those who are unable to donate blood, please consider a donation to the Action Center (8755 W. 14th Ave. Lakewood, CO 80215, theactioncenter.org), for which Susan volunteered.

Maxine Hoffman Maxine Dale Hoffman, nee Eyestone, 99, passed away January 27, 2020. Born in Wray, Colorado, to Howard and Blanche Eyestone (nee, Boughman) on August 20, 1920, she married Myron P. Hoffman in 1943.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years and is survived by her children, Marian Alder, Ann Hoffman and Carol Hoffman, her sister Janet Hamilton of Brighton, CO and many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Maxine will be interred in a private ceremony at Fort Logan National Cemetery where her husband was buried in 2005.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Arvada in June.

First responders, community members turning to alternative source

round the time a national increase in COVID-19 cases began leading to product shortages, Spring44 Distilling in Loveland planned to make one highly demanded product — hand sanitizer — on-site. The distillery started making a handful of calls to gauge interest from those who might need the sanitizer most, like first responders.

Within a matter of days, the distillery was receiving call after call from police departments — not only in nearby northern Colorado cities but also from departments throughout Jefferson County and the broader Denver area.

“It just snowballed. The requests are coming fast and furious,” said Spring44 chief financial officer Robin Marisco. She added that the

distillery has distributed more than 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to police organizations and others so far.

“Booze is not usually the answer in a crisis, but distilleries are now able to help in a super positive way,” she said. “It’s a way for us to give back.”

As the impact of COVID-19 has escalated, numerous distilleries throughout the metro area have also launched hand sanitizer operations, producing and distributing to first responders and the wider community.

Where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) would normally prohibit this, the two government agencies have amended their regulations in recent weeks as distilleries across the country have requested permission to enact their hand sanitizer plans.

As of March 26, the TTB’s latest statement said the organization

is providing authorizations and exemptions for distilleries producing hand sanitizer, such as by waiving the need for additional permits. In turn, distilleries must keep detailed records of operations and follow a specific formula.

The FDA likewise has posted a statement saying it will not take action against distilleries, provided they meet certain requirements.

Those include following the approved formula, preparing products under sanitary conditions and registering products with the FDA. With the relaxed regulations, more and more distilleries have jumped on board to address the needs of local organizations like the Westminster Police Department — which, on average, uses about three gallons of hand sanitizer per day, said investigator Cheri Spottke.

Another option is a series called “Sie For Yourself,” where staff will be recommending a film a day that is easily streamable via a variety of services across many devices.

“When we return from this intermission, we will be looking at an unknown future in the movie industry and a new landscape for sure, but it is paramount that we continue to engage you with the biggest tool that we have to connect us: cinema,” Garcia wrote.

“When we reopen you have our promise that we will engage our physical theater screens like never before, with a newfound appreciation for sitting together in the dark and keeping our heads held upwards, watching movies.”

So far, the department has received sanitizer from almost 10 distilleries, she said.

“At this point, all of it has been donated. Moving forward, we will be working with these distilleries to purchase hand sanitizer,” Spottke said. “We cannot express our gratitude enough to these distilleries for their generosity.”

However, Marisco said, as more distilleries work to meet the growing demand, “there are certain components that are harder and harder to get.”

The lack of supply has been a barrier for Devil’s Head Distillery in Englewood, said owner Ryan White. The distillery has the equipment necessary to make hand sanitizer but has had trouble sourcing some of the necessary ingredients, such as ethanol.

Some distilleries have been able to obtain ingredients through existing connections with plants or by producing the components on-site. But for White, while his distillery produces ethanol, the cost of producing the amount necessary for hand sanitizer isn’t attainable, and many of the suppliers he’s reached out to don’t have ethanol available to provide to

new accounts.

“I’ve got about 30 emails out to some of the smaller plants so we can help our community,” White said. “We’ve been getting multiple inquiries for hand sanitizer. The shortages nationwide have people looking at all sources, and we really want to participate and help with the relief effort.”

If the distillery is able to secure the necessary ingredients, it could be distributing sanitizer three or four days later, White said.

“My intention would be to make it as long as there’s a need for it,” he said. “The big piece of the puzzle is being able to have an uninterrupted supply.”

When the operation is up and running, White hopes to assist the entities that have reached out, which includes nursing homes, police departments and health care organizations.

In addition to distributing to these operations, many local distilleries have also been selling or donating bottles to individual community members.

At Ballmer Peak Distillery in Lakewood, hundreds of area residents have come by to receive a four-ounce bottle of hand sanitizer, with the distillery having already produced more than 2,700 ounces, said Austin Adamson, co-owner and distiller.

Ballmer Peak has provided the sanitizer to community members for free, finding that many donate to help the distillery cover costs.

Others in the area have found different ways to ensure the sanitizer gets into customers’ hands. For instance, Golden Moon Distillery, located in Golden, cannot distribute sanitizer for free because of its licensing regulations, but it has given sanitizer out along with the purchase of any bottle.

As the distilleries remain open under current stay-at-home orders, they’re also taking the chance to encourage customers to support their businesses after stocking up on sanitizer.

“When our tasting room closed, we were worried we couldn’t stay open. We had to switch to only bottle sales to go,” Adamson said. Now, as residents line up by the dozens, the distillery has seen some buy a bottle of spirits to show their support.

And, while the distillery is thanking customers for continuing to support them, residents are returning the favor.

“We get people just thanking us, saying they’ve searched grocery stores and pharmacies and couldn’t find any hand sanitizer,” Adamson said. “They’re just so happy there’s someone doing something like this.”

In response to those citizen voices, over the past two years the Arvada Sustainability Committee (ASAC) investigated options, conducted outreach and reviewed other municipal programs. Our research led to our recommendation to City Council of ‘One Street, One Truck’, a system similar to 70% of other US cities.

ASAC has heard from many residents that they pay a high cost for trash and recycling service. The organized waste system represents a reduction in price for most residents.

Many non-HOA residents pay close to $30 a month for trash and recycling services. The proposed organized system will reduce the cost of service to between $11.50 - $19.90 per month even with added services.

Having more vehicles than we need to travel up and down our streets is inefficient and costly to our community; a 2015 road study determined that about 40% of Arvada roads are in poor quality or worse and trash trucks are the heaviest vehicles. For example, moving to an organized waste collection system on just one block could be equivalent to removing more than 4000 passenger vehicles per week, reducing the need for road repair and replacement and saving tax dollars.

In response to Arvada citizens’ request for lower waste costs, and improved community quality of life, ASAC recommends and encourages Arvada City Council to adopt the Organized Waste System proposal without further delay.

Keith Emery, On behalf of the ASAC A senior suggestion I went early to King Soopers this morning to see if I could take advantage of that 7-8 a.m. senior hour. I am not a senior, but I do have chronic health issues, and a live-at-home family member with a compromised immune system, so I thought it might be allowed. However, they were carding people at the door, but what made me decide to wait till later was the line.

The line is what made me mad. Not standing in line myself, but because I guesstimate at least forty elderly people were standing in a long line outside of Kings’ door. The line was not moving. It was 38 degrees out.

Dear Kings, making old folks stand in line outside the grocery store in that temperature is doing nothing to stop the virus, but it is increasing those people’s chances of catching ordinary colds, compromising their health, and becoming a mitigating factor in their deaths if they do catch

COVID-19. Baring even those minor inconveniences, at the very least it is a blatant denial of the whole “no crowds” thing we’re trying to do these days, and that crowd wasn’t even having fun but freezing.

That crowd is older than the King Soopers business. That crowd fought our wars, endured our depressions, and lived through several plagues similar to this one.

Standing in line in miserable cold to get into a store is something I am sure more than a few of them are familiar with, but they shouldn’t have to do it when they’re old, and there’s a new plague in town that specifically targets the elderly.

At least give them a cup of coffee, or something!

Let’s all be better Michael Alcorn believes the COVID-19 pandemic is the time for our better angels to fly. I absolutely agree.

So why did he open his column with “We are, my friends, living in a Chinese curse. Actually, given the origin of this pandemic, you could say the Chinese have cursed us to live inside a Chinese curse”? Does Alcorn truly believe those loaded words came from his better angel? Does he not understand Asian people are being verbally attacked and blamed for the pandemic? I’m quite sure Alcorn’s better angel doesn’t want him stoking the flames of racism and prejudice in this horrible time. We are all people and no matter where we live on this planet, we are more alike than different.

There’s absolutely no need to make an already horrific situation more painful for anyone.

Falser than false A recent poll shows 60% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shocking given how Trump has lied to, misinformed, and confused us, and shifted responsibility for fighting the virus to the states. “I’m not responsible for any of this,” he declared when asked about testing. He told us the virus was like the flu and would miraculously disappear. False. He told us anyone who needs a test could get one, and the infection rate was on its way to zero.

False and false. In his address to the nation, he said insurance companies agreed to pay for treatment and we weren’t in a financial crisis. False and false, again. He declared the virus was under control. Pitiably false. A vaccine, he assured us, would be available “relatively soon.” Also pitiably false. He lied when he said he’d always known this was a pandemic as he repeatedly downplayed the seriousness of the virus. The stock market has crashed.

Over 3 million have lost their jobs.

Hospitals are desperate for safety items and ventilators. Infection and death rates are rising. We’re now the world’s hotspot. And Trump has left it all up to the states to make the hard decisions because he’s not responsible at all. And a majority of Americans approve of this! Our fake leader has corrupted us.

We no longer see the truth.

Secretary of State Jena Griswold cautions Coloradans about charity scams during public health crisis STAFF REPORT

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold is warning Coloradans to beware of possible charity scams during the COVID-19 public health crisis and is offering guidance for safe giving to those impacted by the pandemic.

“The COVID-19 public health crisis is tremendously impacting all of Colorado,” Griswold said in a news release. “Unfortunately, in times of crisis like this, we’ve seen scams looking to exploit Coloradans’ generosity. I encourage Coloradans to continue to give to those in need but do so wisely by making sure their donations are going to the right place.”
