His comedy gives black-and-white conversation a new hue

C

omedian Sam Adams had just finished auditioning for a commercial the afternoon of Aug. 22, 2018, when he saw the text from a friend: “Dude, you are blowing up Facebook.”

A video showcasing a piece of his routine, which Dry Bar Comedy filmed in 2017, was catching fire.

Called “True Color,” it took a humorous look at race by pointing out we aren’t truly white or black, but rather shades of many colors. It had a million views and counting.

He drove to his Parker home, loosened his tie, sat on Ann Macari the couch, stared at his phone, watching Healey the number of views on his Facebook homepage climb.

He switched to his laptop, hitting the refresh button every five minutes: 1.4 million. 2 million. 3 million.

Messages poured in, from Germany, Switzerland, Vietnam, across the U.S. “I’m going to go the hardware store now — I bet I’m Paisley Pink.”

“We are Sahara Sands and Cashmere Pink.”

“We love this.”

Adams was stunned.

“Some people had already gone to the hardware store, sending me pictures of them holding up paint chips,” he remembers. “It was just mesmerizing.”

He stayed up until 4 in the morning, answering every message, saying “thank you, thank you,” posting smiley faces.

Eventually, the video surpassed 29 million views.

And Adams — whose true color, he will tell you, is not black — took a breath.

“I think people are tired of the divisiveness that comes with race,” he says, sitting in a Starbucks recounting the moment, still as awed by it seven months later as he was then. “With race, I can’t solve it. I’m gonna try to make you laugh about it — maybe the humor makes you think about it differently.” ***** In Harrison, Arkansas, a town of

13,000 people in the heart of the Ozark Mountains near the Missouri border, the “True Color” video popped onto Veda Remington’s Facebook feed.

She smiled as she watched, then promptly shared the video with friends — one of them Eric Stefanski, president of the Ozarks Arts Council who also books acts for the local theater.

“I feel like racism is something that people battle against or something they try to hold onto — it depends on which side of the coin they’re on,” says Remington, a mother of two young boys who has lived in Harrison all but a few of her 26 years. “That bit spoke to me in such a way — stop worrying about what you’re not, identify what you are, be OK with that, and move onto something that actually matters.”

Stefanski, 56, also a longtime Lutheran pastor, loved the routine, too, and thought Adams just might be a game-changer for the town.

“We have a reputation we have to live down,” says Stefanski, who moved to Harrison about 19 years ago with his wife and their two young daughters. But “for all the attempts people make to get rid of that reputation,

really the only way to get rid of it is to have someone who understands the problem in the country and who is able to look at it with humor, is not afraid to address it and who can bring people together.”

So, on Aug. 23 at 10:17 p.m., Stefanksi emailed Adams’ agent with an invitation to perform in Harrison’s Lyric Theater in the historic district of a town that has been called the most racist in America. ***** In 2001, Adams, now 59, was a sports writer — he covered the Broncos and other sports teams for The Denver Post and the defunct Rocky Mountain News. He did stand-up comedy at night as a hobby. On Tuesdays, his day off because the Broncos had the day off, he would head to Cherry Creek mall, one of his “think-tank places” for comedy ideas.

On this day, he was standing on the second floor, peering over the railing at the children’s breakfast-themed play area below. Kids were playing on the curvy strip of bacon, the fried egg, the waffle. He didn’t see the little boy,

but his voice carried clearly through the air: “Look at all the pink people.”

The words struck Adams: “There’s a little kid who sees actual color. He’s looking at white people, but he’s not calling them white. He sees the true color.”

That night, he tried out a new routine.

“I don’t know why we say black and white — they’re the blandest colors on the color wheel,” he told the audience.

“This mic stand is black. I’m brown.

White people, you’re not white. Grab a napkin, put it on your hand. You’re pink. It had people laughing, no matter where I did it.”

With some polishing, he thought, that could be his signature bit.

It was in McCook, Nebraska, about six years later, that Adams — by then working full-time at comedy — nailed the home run.

He was wandering around in the small town’s Super Walmart, killing time before his show, when he saw the paint chips in the hardware area. He grabbed some brown ones, noticing the funny names.

“This really old man asks: ‘What are you doing?’ ” “I’m trying to find my true color.” “ ‘Well, you’re black.’ ” “No, I’m not. I’m Hoot Owl. Other shoppers in the area start gathering, thinking maybe I’m confronting him. I say to the old man, ‘Let’s see what color you are.’ I grabbed some pink ones, put it up against his arm. You’re Papaya Smoothie. Now people are laughing — they see what’s happening.”

That night, the mic stand is black.

Adams is Hoot Owl. He pulls out the chip. The place erupts.

“Every time I went someplace, I went to Walmart, got some more paint chips.

They didn’t all have the same ones.

Caramel Nut is my favorite. Sumptuous Spice, this is my all-time favorite.

Chocolate Indulgence. I have four that I like. I just like saying them.” ***** Mike Raftery, Adams’ agent, forwarded him Stefanski’s email. “What are your thoughts on this?” he asked.

CORRECTION Months overdue: 29 Current step: RTD may hear this week from the Federal Railroad Association whether waiver requests to establish ‘quiet zones’ in the residential areas of Wheat Ridge and Arvada can be established — eliminating the need for the trains to sound their horns at each road crossing.

The Way Real Estate Agents Are Compensated Confuses Many Buyers & Sellers

The real estate industry is unlike any other industry in the way its sales personnel are compensated. Since it is a persistent source of confusion for the general public, allow me to explain.

Imagine you went to a Ford dealership and described what you need in a car or truck. The salesman goes to his computer and pulls up his own inventory and the inventory of all the other dealers in the metro area.

It turns out that Chevrolet or Toyota might have a vehicle that better fits your needs, and the salesman knows that he’ll earn just as much by taking you to their lots and selling you one of their vehicles, so you get in his Tesla and go car-hunting. He even takes you for test drives without a salesman from the other dealership being involved at all. You go back to the Ford dealership, where a purchase offer is signed and emailed to the dealership which has that vehicle. The salesman helps you arrange financing with a trusted lender and sends proof of cash or financing with the offer.

Although there are some “auto brokers” who function as I’ve described above (in fact, I bought my Chevy Volt using an auto broker), that’s not how

most car sales transactions work. It is, however, exactly how real estate works.

You’ve probably heard of the MultiList Service (MLS) on which real estate listings are posted.

The central premise of the MLS is “cooperation and compensation.” To be a member of the MLS — essential if you’re in the real estate business — you must agree to cooperate with every other member of the MLS and to offer compensation if another member sells your listing. The percentage commission offered to other members is called the “co-op” commission. In the Denver market, that commission is typically 2.8%. There’s an interesting history of MLS-type “exchanges” dating back as far as the 1880’s, which you can read at www.NAR.realtor or by googling MLS. The listing contract which every agent prepares for a seller specifies the total commission (typically between 5 and 6 percent) and the co-op which he or she is offering to other MLS members. In the “old days,” before Taft-Hartley anti-trust laws were enforced in our industry, the Denver Board of Realtors prescribed a 7% listing commission, and prescribed that 40% of that commission (or 2.8%)

Another Area of Confusion: When Is Your Real Estate Agent a ‘Transaction Broker’ and Not an ‘Agent’?

Although it’s common (including by me) to talk about us as real estate “agents,” the proper term is “brokers,” because the term “agent” has a specific legal meaning which is important to understand.

One reason we don’t use the term “brokers” is that the term is commonly used when referring to the “employing broker” or “managing broker” in a real estate company. As the “broker” of Golden Real Estate, the proper term for my agents is “broker associates,” but I persist in calling them “agents,” because that’s the commonly understood term for them.

So what is an “agent” in the legal sense? An agent is an advocate for his or her client, serving with “utmost good faith, loyalty and fidelity.” An agent will share with his client anything that helps in negotiating the best deal in a transaction. For example, if the broker on the other side of

a transaction revealed that the buyer is living in a hotel and is desperate to buy a home, I can use that information to my seller’s advantage. A good “agent,” by the way, would never let that information slip!

A “transaction broker” has no such responsibility to his or her client and functions only to facilitate a transaction. He shouldn’t disclose any information about either party that would advantage the party on the other side of the transaction.

When a listing agent is approached by an unrepresented buyer for his listing, he may choose to create a client relationship, thereby requiring him to become a transaction broker in the contract he prepares.

However, it is Golden Real Estate’s office policy to treat that buyer as a “customer,” thereby retaining our agency relationship with the seller, unless we had a preexisting relationship with that buyer.

Under that formula, sellers would pay 4.2% commission to the listing agent and 2.8% to the selling agent at closing.

Once the Department of Justice said that anti-trust laws apply to the real estate industry, the Board of Realtors and the MLS could no longer dictate commission rates, and listing rates began their inevitable decline as agents competed with each other for listings. This is a good thing for sellers, but it has no real meaning for buyers. Indeed, when listing agents have tried to pay less than 2.8% co-op commission, they have found that buyers’ agents are less likely to show and sell their listings. As a result, listing agents now earn less than buyers’ agents in a given transaction, even though they are the ones laying out money for photographs, brochures, staging consultations, advertising and other expenses associated with maximizing their listings’ exposure to potential buyers.

Now and then, this commission model — wherein the entire commission is paid by the seller — is challenged, but it endures almost universally, if for no other reason than “it works.”

Where this business model causes confusion is when a broker or brokerage advertises a 1% or 2% “listing fee” in order to get a listing appointment, at which time the seller learns that this does not include the requisite (or at least recommended) 2.8% commission to the buyer’s agent.. These brokers and brokerages know that advertising a 3.8% or 4.8% listing fee would garner them far fewer listing appointments.

Another source of confusion is what’s known as the variable commission. This term applies to a commission that is reduced if the listing agent doesn’t have to pay a co-op commission because the buyer has no agent of his own. However,

most listing agents — 85% by my calculation — don’t mention reducing their commission in their listing presentations and hope that the seller won’t ask them about reducing their commission if they don’t have to pay a co-op commission.

At Golden Real Estate, it is office policy to offer a variable commission.

As real estate values continue to increase, it’s reasonable to ask whether the commission rates — which I’ve said is typically between 5 and 6 percent) should be reduced on the theory that it takes little more money and work to market a million-dollar home than it does to market a $400,000 or $500,000 home.

The extent to which listing agents can reduce their commission, however, is limited by that 2.8% co-op commission that we feel obligated to offer. After all, if, for example, we reduced our commission to 4%, we’d only earn 1.2% after giving away 2.8% to the buyer’s agent.

Where we can be more accommodating on those higher priced homes is in agreeing to a lower variable commission. My practice is to reduce my 5.6% commission to 4.6% when I don’t have to pay 2.8% to a buyer’s agent, but I’m willing to adjust both those numbers on a higher-priced listing. By the way, that appears to be the practice of most broker associates at Golden Real Estate. Because of Taft-Hartley, I can’t dictate what they offer.

How often do agents double-end their listings? I’ve calculated that it happens in about 5% of transactions, although that percentage is much higher at Golden Real Estate because of our more extensive marketing of listings (including in this ad) and the fact that we offer Totally Free Moving to Colorado buyers of our listings when they aren’t represented by an agent.

‘My natural tendency is to be an encourager’ Meet Patsy Pfaff: 2019 Arvada Chamber Woman of the Year

Patsy Pfaff is known to many in Arvada as the cookie lady.

Whether she’s going to the car mechanic, the bank, the doctor her signature baked-from-scratch snicker doodles usually accompany her.

“I feel like have the opportunity to brighten someones day, to make life a little bit better and it took me nothing to offer them that gift,” Pfaff said. “I strive to do the right thing every day and I feel like I am. I don’t have the stress or the crunch of the work world in my life, so my gift in life is baking.”

Pfaff, 66, started volunteering in Arvada when her children were hung.

When her son was born in 1985, she became one of the first 25 donors at the Mothers’ Milk Bank, a nonprofit program of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation that collects, processes, tests and provides donor human milk to babies in need. She was heavily involved in her church, First United Church of Arvada and at local schools.

The committee will be giving out two image awards at this year’s Arvada Chamber Awards Lunch to Karen Cowling and Michael Sudak.

Cowling works with Dental At Your Door to help those experiencing homelessness in Arvada with dental care. She also works with Benefits in Action to assist people in need with court hearings, hospital visits and mental health services.

Sudak owns and operates an Arvada-based business to employ local residents at above minimum wage and provide local children with healthy and nutritious school lunches.

Many of the schools served by Sudak’s company have high free and reduced lunch participants. feel appreciated and noticed while on the Ralston Valley High PTA. Her biggie right now is that she is extremely active in the ET Chapter of PEO, a group that provides educational opportunities for women through scholarships. She has held most of the officer positions locally and statewide for PEO.

“Patsy succeeds in pulling together a community the size of Arvada by using an ethos which represents

small town friendship and love,” said Kim Smagala, who met Pfaff playing racketball in 1981. “The city of Arvada is fortunate to have her infectious energy and activism in its midst.”

Pfaff is frequently seen on the Ralston Creek Trail where she is an avid walker, having completed in 77 half marathons in the last 10 years.

She serves on the advisory board for All Out Multisport, a race company, and as an encourager for her friends to get out walking.

“Patsy is one of those people that’s there for you when you need them,” said Kathi Likes, adding that after her husband died, Pfaff got her out walking again.

Now Likes is part of Pfaff walking group, Team Altitude. Their shirts read, “13.1 miles, not a walk in the park.”

“My natural tendency is to be an encourager,” Pfaff said. “To make life a little bit brighter for someone else.”

Two words often used to describe Jerry Marks are “caring” and “kindhearted.”

Marks, 58, is a native of Arvada and has served the community as a volunteer firefighter, board members of the Arvada Chamber of Commerce, Arvada Vitality Alliance and Arvada Economic Development Association.

Marks also served on Arvada City Council filling a vacancy form 20132015.

“I’ve always felt like giving back is part of doing things,” Marks said.

“I’m happy to give back and get involved. Growing up in Arvada, you want to see the community succeed.”

During his time volunteering with Arvada Fire, Marks studied hazmat situations, which led to him founding his business, Custom Environmental Services in 1998. The business focuses on hazmat cleanup. His business was names Outstanding Arvada Business by AEDA in 2004 and Arvada Chamber Business of the Year in 2011.

For his continued involvement in the community, Marks has been named the 2019 Man of the Year by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce.

“I think it’s overdue,” said Arvada Fire Chief Jon Greer, about the award. “When you look at Jerry’s body of work, it’s as long as anybody who has dedicated time to Arvada. I think this is a lifetime award for him that he’s earned.”

Our beloved member, Edna Miklos passed away on February 12, 2019 from complications from heart surgery. Edna owned The Hair Place on 20th & Youngfield for over 30 years. One of the charter members of the Applewood Business Association, she loved Applewood and the people in it. Edna served as President, Vice President, and Secretary over the years for the association. She also headed up our Annual Golf Tournament for years, as well as organizing the Flag Day celebration where we fly American Flags between Flag Day and Independence Day every year along Youngfield and 32nd Avenue.

Edna had a vested interest in the Applewood Community. She actively participated in many local projects like the Youngfield widening project, Clear Creek Crossing development (formerly known as Cabela’s project) and Save Applewood Golf Course. She was also active in Clear Creek Valley Neighborhood Council. She was our friend and colleague and she knew so many people and what went on in the area – many of us called her “The Unofficial Mayor of Applewood”, and it was so appropriate!

She left us so suddenly, we didn’t have a chance to say goodbye. The ABA and Edna’s family, together with The Vista at Applewood Golf Course, where Edna played every Monday night at Ladies’ Night during summer, would love to invite you to join us for a Celebration of Edna’s Life.

City wins lawsuit over Olde Town development approval Arvada for All the People filed a complaint that says city council violated its own rules

The court has ruled in favor of the city of Arvada in a suit filed by citizen group Arvada for All the People last April.

The suit asked that the city of Arvada be found in violation of its own laws and procedures, and that the council’s approval of the Preliminary Development Plan for Olde Town Residences be deemed invalid. Defendants listed in the complaint are the city of Arvada, Arvada Urban Renewal Authority, Trammell Crow Co. and TC Denver Development Inc. On March 19, 2018 Arvada City Council passed a motion to rehear the Preliminary Development Plan (PDP) for the Olde Town Residences, which had been rejected 55 days earlier. The project plan passed by the council 6-1 at that same meeting.

Arvada for All the People contended that the council motion was based on a wrong interpretation of the City’s Land Development Code 3.1.17, which mandates a previously defeated PDP must wait a year before being reconsidered if it is substantially the same — unless the council explicitly agrees to hear it sooner.

At the March 2018 meeting, City Attorney Chris Daly said that “while the applicant’s present proposal is substantially the same with respect to height,

building footprint, number of floors, and architecture, several notable revisions have been incorporated to meet the concerns expressed at the January

hearing.”

The project, a multistory, multifamily housing complex located new W. 56th Avenue and Wadsworth Bypass in Arvada, is part of the city’s transitoriented development plan new the commuter rail station.

The project was first considered on January 22, 2018 with a proposal of 256 units and 350 parking spaces. The second application showed 252 units and an additional 15 parking spaces.

“It is not the court’s job to dictate when and how City Council can effectuate the waiver,” the court decision reads.

Further, the court found that the city’s interpretation of the statute does not constitute an abuse of discretion and that authority was not exceeded when the council decided to waive the one-year restriction to rehear the PDP from Trammell Crow.

“We’re pleased with the outcome,” said Arvada Mayor Marc Williams.

“It’s what we expected, but it’s always good to have validation from the district court.”

Williams said city council took this project and reconsideration of the project “very seriously” and wanted to make sure they followed the proper steps.

“We relayed on the advice of our legal team, and the court agreed that we followed our procedures correctly,” Williams said.

Volunteers of America opens senior dining site STAFF REPORT

A new Volunteers of America dining site has opened in the Arvada area.

The organization wanted to ensure that the seniors of the Arvada area have easy access to healthy and nutritious meals, according to a news release, so it partnered with New Apostolic Church on Vance Street, where anyone aged 60 or older can get a hot, nutritious, and healthy meal.

Volunteers of America has provided meals to eligible seniors in the Denver area for 45 years through the Meals on Wheels and Congregate meal programs originating from the Older Americans Act and Colorado State Funds for Senior Services.

New Apostolic Church is at 5290 Vance St. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

“We knew it was an uphill climb form the beginning,” said group spokesman Dave Chandler. “It always is when average citizens have to take the extra step to hold their government accountable.”

Chandler said that even though the ruling is a step back, he wouldn’t discourage people from getting involved.

“We still think it’s a bad projects,” Chandler said of the Olde Town Residences. “We think it’s not compatible with Olde Town and it’s much too high density. It’s the beginning of many traffic and parking problems in that area.”

But Adams took a long look at the offer. He researched the town, read the stories about its past — and its present.

White race riots in the early 1900s drove out all but one of the 115 black residents, who although poor were a vibrant community with deep roots, according to The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture. Today, the head of the Ku Klux Klan, designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, lives 15 miles from town.

News photos show the driveway to his compound lined with Confederate and KKK flags. Harrison is the organization’s postal address, and white-pride billboards sometimes appear along roadways, news reports say.

The 2010 U.S. Census put the town’s population as 96 percent white and 0.3 percent black — who are generally students at the junior college or employees at the FedEx freight carrier company, Stefanski says.

The Community Task Force on Race Relations, founded in 2003, openly acknowledges on its mission statement the town’s ugly history and racial challenges, and emphasizes its commitment to promoting diversity and an inclusive environment. A victory: In 2016, the town won the Dream Keeper Award, given by the state’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission for noteworthy efforts to improve race relations, specifically among young people.

With some resident-organized peace rallies and town-sponsored diversity

marches, as reported in local news accounts, Harrison is working toward rebranding its image.

But the past lingers. The reputation still makes African-Americans reluctant to live there, Stefanski says. And there are still people in the community who display prejudice and hate toward others different from them, Remington says. Her late grandmother was one.

But, she says, “The majority are not that way.”

She credits her father — whom she describes as a man with a heart open to all kinds of differences — for instilling in her the creed “that people are people, that women and men need to be respected equally, that color doesn’t define a person.”

“We have some really truly wonderful people that live here,” Remington says of the town she learned to love in recent years, when she started looking for the good.

In the end, the astonishing reaction that “True Color” had inspired in so many people around the world persuaded Adams to accept Stefanski’s invitation.

“Race stimulates conversation, positive and negative, like no other topic,” Adams says. “It’s really just a comedy bit, not intended to stoke political fires.

But the people, in their comments, were finding a message they deemed positive in that conversation about race. For me it’s a funny-yet-true look at skin tones. Nothing more. But if

people believe the bit can be a positive in the conversation, then I will deliver it. To do it in place where the reputation is stained with racism, I wanted the challenge.” ***** Adams knows racism. He heard it, saw it, felt it. He attended, he says, one of the most racist high schools in America in the 1960s and ‘70s in Cleveland. But his first experiences with discrimination started earlier.

“We would get off the city bus for junior high school, walk down the street.

It was eerily quiet, sun’s out, too silent.

Then white kids would pop out from behind the trees, throwing rocks.”

During a drive to visit family in Georgia one July, a 9-year-old Adams and his family stopped at a restaurant.

They ordered waters and soda. A little boy in a nearby booth asked for a soda, too. His father said no. The boy noted Adams’ sister, then 3, had one, but referred to her by the N word. It was the first time Adams had felt the word directly aimed at him or his family. It made him feel small. He and his family walked out.

“I knew a lot of white kids were sort of hiding behind this thing that’s been passed down ... the cloak of racism” as he calls it. But “in class we would see how people really are. I was in band — the same kid who played trombone in the brass section, laughing and joking with me, was the same kid who would pop from behind the tree and throw rocks.”

And Adams thought: “ ‘I know who you really are — you’re the trombone player, you’re not the rock thrower.…

Eventually that’s how we worked it…

I’m just going to be me — when everybody started being themselves, things started getting better.”

He looks back on that time and wishes he’d displayed more leadership, more willingness to try to defuse situations, to find a way to connect.

Humor, he thinks, could have been a good tool. ***** On Dec. 6, Adams flew into Little

Rock, Arkansas, then drove to Fayetteville, about 75 miles from Harrison.

He wasn’t afraid. He was concerned, as he would tell his audience the next night.

He had prepared, trained, for months. “Like a boxer getting ready for a big fight. . . . I let myself believe I was going to fight racism.”

He studied the town’s everyday life to find ways to connect. He knew the high school football team was on a winning streak and congratulated it in promotional videos for the show. He found the diversity task force’s Facebook page and contacted it to gauge interest in his show. He knew about the town’s annual hot air balloon race.

He envisioned every possible scenario — from no one showing up to the performance to being the target of heckling or violence — and how he would respond.

As Adams left for the drive to Harrison, he made sure his gas tank was full.

He bought plenty of water and snacks so he wouldn’t have to stop along the way.

In Harrison, he parked by the town gazebo. The night was cold, quiet.

Whatever happens, happens, Adams thought, as he got out of the car.

He looked up and saw the Lyric Theater across the street, its neon sign announcing: “Comedian Sam Adams Dec. 7 @7:00.”

He met Stefanski inside. They exchanged pleasantries, talked about how to introduce him. Make your announcements and I’ll just walk on, Adams said.

As he did, a loud roar swelled through the hall, where almost all 350 seats were filled. Adams’ knees slightly buckled. The cheering seemed to go on and on.

He hadn’t envisioned that scenario: “What if you go out there and they give you this great ovation? I didn’t know what it meant to them.”

Sitting in the audience for her first comedy show ever, Remington felt her heart fill.

“It just validated for me that the town is what I like to believe it is, and that we have people here that are supportive and find good humor, and they’re not what our reputation says we are. . . . Just to hear the entire place light up like that — it was incredible.”

A few seconds of silence passed as Adams composed himself.

Stefanski finds it difficult to capture the moment in words. “It was a matter of him being honored and us being honored. It’s hard to describe apart from being there — it’s kind of one of these awesome moments.”

Time flew. Adams’ 45-minute show stretched into 90 minutes. He emptied his bag of fun. At the end, he invited people to shake his hand or have a picture taken with him for $5 — to raise money for the local food bank, which Adams had read was in need of donations.

A line formed down the aisle.

There was the 13-year-old girl with the pink-and-white “I (heart) comedy” sweatshirt who wants to be a comedian.

And the woman who told Adams he would never know how much this meant to the town, because by showing up he had helped dissolve some of the reputation they were working so hard to erase.

“It was my pleasure to perform for them,” says Adams, who was deeply moved by the warm reception. “They were genuinely nice to me … I saw that they weren’t what the internet por-

The crowd that night was mostly white, with a few Hispanic women, Remington says. But a cross-section of the town had shown up, Stefanski says — politicians, businesspeople, everyday residents, young and old.

And after the show, many lingered in conversation.

“I would have never seen them talking to one another,” Stefanski says.

“That dialogue is exactly the sort of thing we have to have going on here.

That’s where a lot of things are going to get repaired.” ***** That his “True Color” bit has

touched so many still amazes Adams.

At the end of the day, he says, his job is to make people laugh, not to make a political statement.

But, he reflects, we’re conditioned to see what’s different from the time we’re little. If you’re given three triangles and a circle, we’re always told to pick out the one that’s different, not the ones that are alike.

“Maybe,” he says, “if we stop seeing black and white, stop looking at color, we’ll get on to more important things.”

Adams, who is most likely returning to Harrison for a fall show this year, still has his original paint chips — Hoot Owl, Caramel Nut, Sumptuous Spice, Chocolate Indulgence. He also

has the paint chip a woman in Harrison handed him that night. On it, she signed her name, circled the Peach Medley shade and wrote “We love you.

You are great!”

The paint chip sits on his desk, in the “me” room, alongside the trophies and photos with famous people — a reminder of an unforgettable night in which hundreds of true colors swirled into a tapestry of humanity at its joyful best.

Little Elementary celebrates the arts

ittle Elementary was transformed into an artistic space March 22 for Art Day, a partnership with the Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities designed to bring educational art experiences to students. Throughout the day, 35 workshops in both visual and performing arts were taught to students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

“We’re really trying to bring authentic learning to the kids and expose them to more of the arts,” said Principal Julie Waage. “Bringing our community in together and giving kids the opportunity to play and to learn with community partners was really important to us.”

The day of creative fun was made possible through fundraising from the school’s PTSA and a grant from the Arvada Center.

Storytelling: The original world wide web Annual Story Seeds Conference and Concert features local and international storytellers

There are about 15 storytellers involved with the Rocky Mountain Storytelling’s 2019 Story Seeds Conference and Concert.

Here is a spotlight of a few of them:

Laura Deal Storytelling has been a means of communication for thousands of years, said Laura Deal.

It was a way for traditions to be passed down from generation to generation and to share wisdom with

one and other, Deal said. This was especially so before humans had a lot of literacy skills, she added.

“There’s something hardwired in our brains, because of our use of language, to enjoy stories,” Deal said.

Deal of Boulder is a storyteller, freelance writer and dream interpreter. She always had an interest in storytelling, but started storytelling for a public audience about two-and-ahalf years ago after receiving training to volunteer with Spellbinders, an organization of volunteer storytellers that visit public schools.

This will be the third year that Deal has attended the Rocky Mountain Storytelling’s Story Seeds Conference and Concert. Like the prior two years, Deal is again looking forward to hearing other people’s stories and learning more about the craft, as well as telling her own story. Deal expects to tell an original story that’s in the style of a traditional folktale.

“I love the immediate connection with the audience,” Deal said of storytelling. “We’re all experiencing the story together.”

Liz Weir When Liz Weir comes to America, her audience generally wants to hear Irish stories.

But the art of storytelling is not purely performing, she said.

“Part of it is to encourage people to tell their own stories and to value those stories,” Weir said. “There’s

so many wonderful stories in the world.”

After all, as a means for people to share stories with each other, storytelling can be thought of as the original world wide web, Weir said.

Weir has been telling stories for 46 years. She began at age 22 when employed as a public children’s librarian.

In 1990, she decided to start storytelling as a freelance professional.

Weir lives in Northern Ireland and travels internationally for storytelling. She has been coming to the U.S. for more than 20 years, and although this will be her first time performing at the Rocky Mountain Storytelling’s Story Seeds Conference and Concert, she’s been to Colorado many times for vacations and visits with friends.

“The scenery is fantastic and the people are great,” Weir said. “There’s a very strong community of storytellers.”

John Stansfield During his days as an elementary school teacher, John Stansfield loved reading stories aloud to the children.

The school district he taught in was one of the first to do an outdoor education program and when that began, he discovered a knack for telling campfire stories.

Then, in 1979, Stansfield of Larkspur decided to pursue a making a living of storytelling.

“Narrative is a very special thing to humanity — we all love to share,” Stansfield said. “The storyteller guides you, but the audience gets to create the story in their individual imaginations.”

Stansfield has participated in the Rocky Mountain Storytelling’s Story Seeds Conference and Concert probably 25 times or more, he said.

What’s in a (nick)name? What’s yours?

N

icknames are common in my family, often more common that our given names, from both my mom’s and my dad’s sides. My mother Rosemary was always known as Mimi to her RomaALCHEMY nian relatives, and my father was simply The Popper (as in pop, or papa).

My father was the great nicknamer himself though, and he seldom called anyone by their given names, because he had – often appropriately and always affectionately Andrea Doray – bestowed them with monikers of his own making … Barry Lou, Janey Bug, John Boy.

When I was little and was asked my name, I would rattle off a string of them, beginning with my actual first and middle names, followed by terms such as “Puddin’ Pie,” “Pie-Pie,” “Cookie” and “Pigeon.” In fact, my dad referred to both my sister and me as “Pigeon” so regularly that sometimes we didn’t know which one of us he was calling. Then, naturally, when Joyce’s daughter was born, she became “Squabbie” … that’s right, a baby pigeon.

I’ve often mused about what roles nicknames play both in our upbringings and the continued courses of our lives. Of course, it’s the connotations that our families and friends – and we ourselves – assign to these nicknames that carry the weight of the words.

Whether it’s weather or climate change With all the hullabaloo about climate change, I thought perhaps climate change should be put into perspective. Sea level is a pretty good gauge of climate change so we’ll use sea level changes over time.

Two million years ago, sea levels were 300 feet higher than todays sea level and Florida was completely underwater.

Ten thousand years ago when one-mile thick glaciers covered all of Canada and reached down into the northern half of the U.S., sea levels were 300 feet lower than today and Florida was a whole bunch bigger. Sea levels change all the time in response to natural climate changes caused by volcanic eruptions, cyclical lows in solar radiation and so forth.

If sea levels rise or recede a meter or so over a 100-year span is to be expected. We better hope for climate change on the warm side. Following the “Medieval Warm” period (950 to 1250) the Northern Hemisphere experienced the “Little Ice Age” (1300’s to 1850) and millions of people died of Black Death and starvation.

Nicknames based on my actual first name, however, have always seemed a stretch. I tried so hard to be an Andi in high school, but no one – including me – thought I was any kind of Andi.

Other people with my same name sometimes go by Drea, but pronounced as lovely “dray-a” versus the more flat “dree-a” mine would be.

And, as often happens with females, I have been called by men’s names …

Arnie and Freddie, for example (but never Andy).

In college, I became Big A and roomed with two Rhondas: R Lou and R Jean. For some reason, this nickname followed me into my career, and

I still get texts and emails addressed to Big A. Now, in my family, I am primarily known as Auntie, not a nickname so much as a beloved term of honor to me.

Other family nicknames have included Munchie, Bubba, Sparky, Moo, Dimpy, Titter, Nosey, and My Boy. We also nickname our pets … Puka, Schmim, Shells.

Ah, but I have always been intrigued with “Cookie,” and I cherish my tiny baby’s bracelet engraved with this name. At various times throughout my younger life, I yearned to resurrect Cookie as a legitimate nickname, but it never stuck. And, in all honesty, I can’t ever remember anyone actually calling me Cookie.

From my earliest days, reading has been one of my favorite pastimes.

Stuck inside over spring break with strep one year, Michael Alcorn I digested Frank Herbert’s “Dune” and spent the week on a distant desert planet. Miserable over one Christmas Break with chicken pox, I discovered J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, and had two glorious weeks of adventure.

My childhood summers alternated between the baseball diamond and places like Narnia, ancient Europe and Mars.

And then, when my passions turned towards music, a whole new world of story telling came to life for me! Try to imagine the darkness of “The Empire Strikes Back” without the Imperial March, or the freedom of flight for “E.T.” without the John Williams’ rousing soundtrack. And then there are those who combine the two: “Romeo and Juliet” is epic, and many modern adaptations have been…less than epic. But you can feel the anticipation of young love on a visceral level when you listen to Tony and Maria sing “Tonight”

from “West Side Story”, and take the gut punch of pain with the last dissonant chords in a way that even the brilliance of the Bard does not always deliver. And if the 1,400 pages of “Les Miserables,” the novel, is daunting, then perhaps you can go for just as broad an emotional ride watching Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne sing their way through the story of love, redemption and war. And if you really want to know what master storytelling is, listen to older country music. Garth Brooks can tell a sixtyyear story arc of a man and a woman in about three minutes and twenty-four seconds, and we all know them.

By the by, the reason I’m on all this is because this weekend, we went and watched Ralston Valley High School’s perform the musical version of the 2004 movie “Big Fish,” which, incidentally, is basically all about telling stories. I will say it again, if you ever doubt that the next generation will be capable of doing great things in the world, go watch something like that.

With 30 kids in the orchestra, a cast of 40, 20 kids behind the scenes, and all with just five adults leading the way, doing things that grown up professionals strive to do.

It’s really very impressive. And the clarinet soloist was brilliant!

Now, if we could just get them all to stop eating laundry detergent…

Stories matter. They are, as Sondheim wrote, a spell, that can transport a person, or even transform them, if the lesson gets in. There is, no doubt, a reason many of the great teachers, from Aesop to Jesus Christ, use parables to make their points. And the stories we tell shine a light on who we are as a people. Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky taught us about the deep, soulful perseverance of the Russian people; Dickens taught us about the stoic duty of an Englishman; Homer taught us about heroes and epic fools; and Shakespeare taught us about … well, everything.

What kind of stories do you internalize? Or, maybe more importantly, what kind of stories do you share with your children?

Personally, I like flawed characters. I don’t like the White Knight character, the man with all the answers and all the skills. I’ve never met that person in real life. But I have met both the man and the woman who have doubts, and weaknesses, and limitations. Show me THAT person saving the day, and that’s something worth internalizing and sharing. Because maybe, just maybe, that story will transform the shy, unassuming person next to you at the stop light — or the child sitting in the back seat — into a hero when the time is right.

Yet, even at this late date, I can’t help but wonder how – or if – the trajectory of my life might have diverged from, say, Cookie’s. Would I, could I have been lawyer, a brain surgeon, a piano teacher?

Roller derby star or SCUBA divemaster? Foreign aid worker, international correspondent, mother of triplets?

What seems most likely to me, though, is that this more informal nickname would have made absolutely no difference at all.

Plus, come to think of it, Auntie is really the only other name I want.

SWEETMAN Jude Eiting Schmieder

May 11, 1945 – March 17, 2019

Jude Eiting Schmieder, 73, of Arvada, Colorado, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2019, at her home in Arvada. She was born May 11, 1945, in Ohio. She was the fourth daughter of Carl and Genevieve Eiting, residents and business leaders in Minster, Ohio.

Raised in Ohio, she married her high school sweetheart Luke in their small town of Minster. After several years of living in Ohio, Luke and Jude’s adventurous spirit encouraged them to “Go West” to the frontier state of Colorado. There they camped, ranched, hunted, and thoroughly embraced the outdoor lifestyle with their four children. Jude supported and encouraged Luke in starting and building Mesa Laboratories from a garage business to a company with over 300 employees. Jude was an avid watercolor artist who created beautiful landscapes. She also served as president of the Arvada Fine Arts Guild, and loved connecting with other artists. Many admired Jude as having an engaging sense of humor, a positive ‘can do’ attitude, and a humility about

her artistic talents. Well loved by her children, her nieces and nephews, and her friends, she had an engaging personality and was a delight to be around.

She was a member of St Joan of Arc Church in Arvada. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Janice Eiting Brinkman. Jude is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Luke Schmieder, of Arvada; and her children, Jeffrey, Pam, John, Lori, and their spouses, and 5 grandchildren.

Brian William Sweetman In the early morning hours, Brian William Sweetman of Arvada, Colorado, was taken by the angels as he slept peacefully in his home on Sunday, March 3, 2019.

He courageously battled stage 4 cancer for 22 months before passing away at the age of 57.

Brian is survived by his loving devoted wife, Audrey Craft, with whom he shared 21 ½ years together, his mother Barbara White-Sweetman and her brother and his wife, Michael and Cathy White. Brian is also survived by his son, Richard Sweetman and his wife Jordana and their 4 children, the twins Aiden & Logan, Lily and Claire. He is survived by his sisters, Virginia Grohn and Camille Curci and her husband Bob Curci and their children, Kaitlyn, Robert and Kimberly, as well as nieces and nephews. Brian was preceded by his father, Richard M. Sweetman.

Brian was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He spent his childhood in New Jersey. As a boy he started to develop several interests that remained throughout his life.

Brian’s mother recalls asking Brian to clean his bedroom only to find him later reading a book instead. He never lost the love of reading.

Brian accomplished many things in his life, but his greatest accomplishment was the creation of his one and only incredible son who was the light of his life.

Brian enjoyed riding his mountain bike to and from work as well as many single track trails in Colorado. He had a passion for drumming and did acquire the drums of dreams in his lifetime. Brian had a love of vintage cars, in particular his 64 ½ Mustang which he did see take on a beautiful coat of paint and a new electronic fuel injection system thanks to several of his friends. Brian was learning to play the guitar hoping to become another guitar God. And yes, he was a cat lover as evidenced by his many cat posts on Facebook.

Brian loved his job, the company he worked for, Barber-Nichols, Inc., and the many friends he had at the company. He felt lucky to have a job that he truly loved.

Spend an evening at the Sin Street Social Club

Getting kids comfy with nature pays back bigtime

he majority of pieces I write about theater productions in this column are about shows that I haven’t seen yet. That’s the nature of the beast - theaters obviously want pieces to run as early as possible so there’s more time for audiences to buy tickets.

But the way the timing worked out for “Sin Street Social Club,” the final Arvada Center Black Box COMING of the ATTRACTIONS production season, I was able to attend the world premiere of the show before writing a single word about it. Which is great, because I can write this column a little differently than normal, and also because I have the Clarke Reader opportunity to tell you the show is a complete delight.

Adapted from “The Rover” by Aphra Behn - one of the few women in 17th century England to make a living as a writer - by Denver playwright Jessica Austgen, “Sin Street Social Club” runs at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., through May 19. Performances are at 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm and 2 p.m. on Sundays.

“It’s really an adventure putting on the world premiere of something, because you’re in uncharted territory,” said Zachary Andrews, who plays Pete in the show. “It’s a bawdy, swashbuckling clown-show. And the company model we have here is a unique breeding ground for collaborations.”

The show focuses on Helen (Jessica Robblee), a nun about to take her vows, and her sister Florie Mae (Emily Van Fleet), a singer in the family’s New Orleans nightclub. On Mardi Night in 1916 the sisters work to save the club, find true love and make a life for themselves. But to do all that they have to deal with a beau or two, a madame, wealthy businessmen and a roguish sailor.

What ensues is hilarious, smart and utterly winning. All the actors — Lance Rasmussen, Abner Genece, Geoffrey Kent, Emma Messenger, Regina Fernandez and Larry Cahn — expertly wring every laugh, chuckle and guffaw from Austgen’s whipsmart script.

A lot of work, collaborations and fine-tuning went into getting the show into the sparkling form it is on the stage, and everyone involved wants audiences to see how it all came together.

hen Jenn Ray’s son Dylan was 2, he started showing signs of sensory processing disorder and autism.

“His brain struggles to filter out all the sounds of life that you or I can filter out without a second thought — the dryer going in the background or a drippy faucet,” Ray said. “I didn’t always know how to help him find his peace.”

But soon she discovered a miracle: hiking.

“It was the first time I noticed he slowed down,” Ray, of Littleton, said.

“He wanted to take in every single aspect of the trail: bugs, plants, flowers, weeds, sticks and rocks.”

These days, Ray and Dylan, now 6, go hiking every chance they get, and are branching out into far-flung destinations: Moab, Fruita and the Great Sand Dunes among them.

“This time in nature has really changed the lives of my son and me, and it’s where some of our best memories have been made,” Ray said.

More creative, less aggressive Dylan’s peace in the wilderness is no fluke, said Rosemary Dempsey, the communications director for Great Outdoors Colorado, or GOCO, an organization that uses state lottery proceeds to preserve and enhance Colorado’s outdoors.

Getting kids outdoors pays big dividends, Dempsey said.

“We know that playing outside is important for many facets of a child’s development,” Dempsey said. “There’s an increasing body of research showing that kids who play outside are more creative, less aggressive, less stressed, and even show fewer ADHD symptoms.”

One of GOCO’s signature campaigns is Generation Wild, which encourages parents to get kids outside.

“On average, we’re finding that many kids get maybe four to seven minutes of unstructured outdoor play time a day,” Dempsey said. “That’s compared to hours of screen time. Doctors are starting to literally prescribe outdoor play for kids.”

Parents don’t need to light out for the territory to connect kid with nature, Dempsey said.

“We can experience the benefits of getting outside just out the back door,” Dempsey said. “It doesn’t have to be a daunting experience.”

Part of the struggle is overcoming stigmas that come with modern parenting, Dempsey said.

Tips for spring and summer gardening

t’s that time of year, where our hemisphere comes to life, and that means your gardens are ready for some sprucing up, observation, and finally, Take a walk around the yard It’s been months since time has been spent in the garden so it’s important to walk around and observe changes. Maybe the perennials you planted in the fall didn’t make it. This will help you stay ahead of any bare spots or unwanted aesthetics as you prepare to grow.

New plants Colorado has a unique climate, sometimes making it difficult to know when to plant.

Landscaping plants should go in late spring or fall, while edible gardening plants can go in various times of the year from March to September.

Sometimes the weather moves these schedules around.

Prune By removing dead and old plant matter your plants can thrive. Be sure your pruning at proper lengths and times, as each plant is different. A quick google search or email to Rooney Bloom can make all the difference in the life of your plants.

Compost area After trimming and raking, you’ll have organic matter that can be a great addition to other parts of your garden. Most counties offer a composting service, however if not, start one in your backyard! Just remember brown (dead organic matter such as sticks), greens (apple cores, leftover lettuce, grass trimmings) and water!

Never use pesticides These kill and gravely harm creatures/pets, people and our environment. There are a plethora of other ways to address invasive species and unwanted creatures into your garden. Organic mulch Mulch assists in suppressing weeds, retaining moisture, and improves soil fertility as it decomposes. Using mulch to top off your veggie garden or flower beds helps, especially in Colorado’s arid climate. BE SURE the mulch your purchasing is organic and hasn’t been treated with dyes.

Colorado is facing an epidemic of opioid use disorders and overdose. An estimated 224,000 Coloradans misuse prescription drugs each year, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Evidence shows that improving data tracking, building local capacity, educating and empowering consumers to make safe choices, supporting healthcare providers and partnering with public safety are effective strategies for preventing opioid overdose and related harms.

In response to this public health crisis, JCPH expanded its harm reduction and overdose prevention efforts. Throughout the year, JCPH hosted several opioid education and awareness events reaching community members, partners and healthcare providers. JCPH also developed a county-wide steering committee — comprised of law enforcement, criminal justice workers, community members, medical and behavioral healthcare professionals, recovery experts, treatment providers and faith communities — focused on reducing substance misuse in Jefferson County.

In January 2019, JCPH released the 2019-2021 Jefferson County Community Health Improvement Plan outlining how the community can come together to tackle those health factors.

Engaged the Community to Test their Homes for Radon In Jefferson County, more than half of homes tested have high levels of radon, a dangerous and naturally occurring radioactive gas. While there is always some radon in the air, high levels of exposure to radon over time can lead to a significant risk of developing lung cancer.

During National Radon Action Month in January 2018, JCPH worked to educate the community and encouraged residents to test their homes for radon. In just one month, JCPH provided more than 1,000 free radon test kits to Jefferson County families.

Expanded Access to WIC Services for Families in South Jeffco Data showed that a significant number of families living in the Littleton area who were eligible for WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) were not participating. This is likely because the closest Jefferson County WIC office was more than 12 miles away, which is a 20-minute drive or a 2-hour bus ride for those who rely on public transportation.

To help more families access WIC services, Jefferson County WIC opened a brand-new clinic in Littleton in March 2018. Now, pregnant women, infants, children and their parents in South Jeffco can now receive nutrition education and breastfeeding support closer to home. By the end of 2018, the new clinic had enrolled 478 clients.

Prenatal care is an important part of staying healthy during pregnancy, for both mom and baby. For more than two decades, the Prenatal Plus Program has helped improve health outcomes for women who were eligible for and received prenatal services.

Using Prenatal Plus as an evidence-based model, JCPH expanded the program to create Healthy Start at Home, a new program that serves all pregnant women in Jefferson County. The new program removes eligibility requirements, making it easier and more equitable for all moms to get the care they need. Healthy Start at Home is free and offers in-home visits from a nurse throughout pregnancy and the first two months after birth, with the option to extend visits through the baby’s first birthday.

Prepared Jeffco Retail Food Establishments for New Regulations With new retail food establishment regulations approaching in January 2019, JCPH utilized multiple outreach efforts to get restaurant operators prepared for major changes. JCPH surveyed local restaurants to determine the best way to help with this transition. We learned that most people wanted digital resources and opportunities to learn without disrupting the workday, in addition to an in-person training with a Q&A session. Throughout the year, JCPH provided online resources and updates, and held trainings over Facebook Live, YouTube and in-person at JCPH. In addition, inspectors spent quality time in retail food establishments providing handouts and reference materials. As a result, more than 230 people accessed the digital trainings.

These online resources continue to be a reference and training mechanism during the 2019 regulation enactment. By working together, JCPH and retail food establishments continue to make food safety a top priority and aim to increase compliance with retail food regulations.

Used GIS Maps to Increase Equitable Access to Healthy, Affordable Food The Jefferson County Food Policy Council, convened

by JCPH, has been working with community, agency and government partners to address barriers to getting healthy food, gaps in services and policies to improve food security. In 2018, the group published a GIS (geographic information system) story map, which shows where food deserts, food swamps and high-needs areas are in Jefferson County. This data tool has been used to create local strategies for improving food security, including promoting farmers markets, CSAs (community supported agriculture) and urban farms as sources for healthy, affordable food.

Engaged Youth Researchers to Better Understand Young People’s Realities In Spring 2018, the Jefferson County Communities That Care (CTC) coalition worked with 21 youth from Lakewood High School, Wheat Ridge High School, Longview High School and Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School to capture youth perspectives on factors contributing to substance misuse, violence and hopelessness and anxiety among young people in their communities.

Using a positive youth development framework, students developed photo-voice documentaries about lived experiences with these factors. Additionally, youth organized and facilitated eight in-depth focus groups with more than 67 of their peers to discuss substance misuse, violence and hopelessness and anxiety. The qualitative data gathered by youth was instrumental in guiding coalition’s strategic action plan.

This year, he will likely tell a story from Colorado history — something from the 19th Century when Colorado was young, Stansfield said. He may even perform it Chautauqua style, meaning a first-person account, in costume, of a character from the past.

“History is made of stories,” Stansfield said.

“That’s what history is.”

And he developed a word for it.

“Historytelling,” Stansfield said, “brings the past alive for modern audiences.”

Carolina Quiroga-Stultz Carolina Quiroga-Stultz will be visiting Colorado for the first time to participate in this year’s Rocky Mountain Storytelling’s Story Seeds Conference and Concert.

Quiroga-Stultz is originally from Colombia, South America, and started storytelling there about eight years ago. She came to the U.S. to earn a master’s degree in storytelling, and graduated in 2013 from East Tennessee State University. She currently resides in Texas.

specializes in stories of Latin American cultures, and particularly the myths and legends of the indigenous peoples.

“There’s a need to hear other voices and learn about other cultures,” Quiroga-Stultz said, adding that the world is a beautiful place to explore, but too often, people tend to stick with what they are familiar with. Storytelling “can bring all the worlds together in one place.”

Using traditional dances — fox trot and waltz, for example — as a means to breakdown social inhibitions and build confidence, JDW Westside Cotillion educates youths to communicate more effectively while promoting personal growth, confidence and character, Buchmann said.

“Social skills are essential for estab-

lishing any relationship,” Buchmann said. This includes everything from meeting a new friend of any age to college or job interviews, and even dating, she added.

Elena and William Perrotto of Broomfield will be return students when the JDW Westside Cotillion classes begin this April. Both are most excited for the dance aspect of the course, but William notes the value of having what he calls “genuine manners.” These are how to greet people and properly shake hands, for example, he said.

“Later on in life, you’ll know how to respect people,” William Perrotto said, “and prove yourself to them for their respect.”

Elena and William are at the age when they’re becoming more social in life, both among their peers and other adults, their dad Joe Perrotto said.

Cotillion “is a learning experience for them,” Joe Perrotto said. “It teaches them to be respectful to all people, no matter where they are.”

It seems that as technology advances, people are losing the essence of human communication, said Emily Perrotto, William and Elena’s mom.

But social skills are still a wonderful gift to have, she added.

“Cotillion brings us back to the basics,” Emily Perrotto said. “It reminds kids that it’s normal to have social interaction with others, and not always hide behind a screen.”

Rabies-positive skunk found in Jefferson County STAFF REPORT

A skunk found in the foothills area of unincorporated Jefferson County, near I-70 and Paradise Road in the Mount Vernon area has tested positive for rabies, according to a news release from Jefferson County Public Health.

This is the first animal to test positive for rabies in Jefferson County in 2019.

Rabies is most often found in bats and skunks in the area. In 2018, 18 skunks and eight bats tested positive for rabies in Jefferson County, and multiple domestic pets and humans were exposed to the virus, the release said.

Though the skunk tested March 20 had no known human or domestic animal exposures, Jefferson County residents and visitors should be cautious of wildlife. Risks include quarantine for animals, post-exposure treatment for humans and in some cases, euthanasia for infected pets, the

release said.

Rabies is caused by a virus that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals and is nearly always fatal.

The virus is shed in the saliva of infected animals.

People or animals can get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal or from a rabid animal’s saliva that comes in contact with their eyes, nose, mouth or open wounds, in which case immediate medical attention is necessary, according to the release.

Jefferson County Public Health encourages residents to take several precautions to prevent exposure and minimize harm from this deadly virus: • Vaccinate all domestic pets and valuable livestock against rabies and ensure vaccines are kept up-to-date.

• Teach children to stay away from all wild animals, stray domestic pets or dead animals, and to tell an adult if they are scratched or bitten. Please remind children of all ages that a sick, dying or dead animal may carry

diseases that humans can contract — trying to help an animal can cause more harm than good.

• Do not allow pets to roam free, since this can increase the chance they could be exposed without your knowledge. Do not leave pet food or livestock feed outside or feed your outdoor pet more than they can finish, as this will encourage a wildlife presence.

• If your pet comes into contact with a wild animal, cover all exposed skin with gloves, long sleeves and a face mask for the eyes, nose and mouth while cleaning them to minimize your risk of exposure to the virus.

Colorado roots shape game of premier women’s golfer

Arvada West gets tough test against defending 5A baseball champs

ARVADA — Mountain Vista coach Ron Quintana wouldn’t mind getting in a few more practices sometime in the near future.

“We haven’t really practiced,” Quintana said after the Golden Eagles took a 10-7 road victory over Arvada West on March 19. “Can we get better? Yes. We just need practice.”

Top-ranked and defending Class 5A baseball state champion Mountain Vista already has seven games under their belts. The Golden Eagles squeezed in a pair of wins over Chatfield and Arapahoe during the opening week of the spring season.

Last week while the ‘Bomb Cyclone’ pretty much postponed every high school baseball game in the state from Wednesday through the weekend, Mountain Vista (5-2 record) was able to get in four games at the Scott Borus Classic Tournament in Arizona.

“Getting out there and just playing really helps the team,” Mountain Vista senior Grant Magill said. “Our Arizona trip is really where I think we find out what kind of team we actually are.”

Against A-West (1-2) the Golden Eagles actually trailed 6-5 after three innings. However, a 3-run top of the fifth inning allowed Mountain Vista to regain the lead. Magill was a hitting machine reaching base on all five plate appearances and drove in four runs.

“He (Magill) is seeing the ball good,” said Quintana of his starting catcher that is hitting well over .700 on the season with double-digit hits and RBIs already this season. “I don’t want to talk too much because I don’t want to jinx it.”

Mountain Vista hit the ball through most of the line-up against the Wildcats. Senior John Zakhem had a trio of hits which included a pair of doubles.

The Golden Eagles cranked out a season-high dozen hits in the win.

“In the past games we haven’t been as aggressive,” Magill said. “In this game we came out ready to swing. I think that was the difference.”

Junior Carter Johnson picked up the victory on the mound pitching a pair of scoreless inning in the fourth and fifth. Sophomore Evan Magill picked up the save getting the final three outs for Mountain Vista.

“That is what we expect from him,” Quintana said of the younger Magill.

“He has the mentality to be a closer and he has good stuff.”

The Wildcats took advantage of a trio of Mountain Vista errors in the bottom of the third inning to plate four runs while batting around, but A-West ended with four errors itself.

“We had only played one (previous) game and we are trying to figure out where we are at. We didn’t play perfect,” A-West coach Matt McDougal said. “When you play a team like that you can’t make mistakes.”

McDougal used a handful of pitchers — Kyle Tolly, Jay Lambert, Cole Doebele and Noah McCandless — in the loss. McCandless took the loss

after pitching three and 2/3 innings.

“We are working on some stuff,” McDougal said of using four different pitchers in the first four innings.

“We’ve got to be in the zone more. Too many walks. Walks hurt us.”

A-West heads down to Arizona for spring break this week to get in some non-league games before returning to acton in Colorado to start the month of April.

ennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest won the 2018 women’s NCAA golf championship and then soared to No. 1 in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), which she has held for 23 weeks dating back to last July.

And this is a golfer who developed her game in Colorado, where it is often difficult to keep all the basics of a competitive golf swing tuned during the winter because of elements OVERTIME like sub-freezing temperatures, snow, slush and ice.

“Yeah, it was a little difficult,” said Kupcho, who won two Class 4A girls state high school individual championships while playing for Jefferson Academy in Westminster. “I guess Jim Benton it was kind of good for me just because it is cold in the winter, so I played basketball pretty much my whole life. I played that during the winter and it kind of gave me a little time away from golf.

“I haven’t got burned out and that’s the main mistake with juniors nowadays.

They just get burned out and don’t want to play later.”

Kupcho will be honored for her stellar 2018 accomplishments by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame as the Amateur Athlete of the Year at its annual awards dinner on April 3 at the Hilton Denver City Center.

“Both my parents (Mike and Janet) play golf and I have an older brother (Steven) that started playing. It sort of became a family thing. My brother and I both loved it and we became pretty competitive.

That’s how it all started.”

Last season she was a first team Women’s Golf Coaches Association All American, broke her own Wake Forest record with a 70.60 scoring average and became the first wire-to-wire NCAA champion since 2002. Kupcho was also a member of the victorious United States Curtis Cup and Palmer Cup teams.

Kupcho was the runner-up in the 2017 NCAA championships when she wound up losing by one stroke after recording a triple bogey on the 17th hole.

She was fired up and determined to prove herself during the 2018 season and followed through.

“It all started for me with me losing the national championship the year before,” she said. “That kind of lit a fire in me.

That kind of developed all the goals to be on all the USA teams and then to win nationals as well. It was just me coming out with the fire and really wanting to prove to myself and my teammates that I could do it and I wasn’t going to go away with just taking second like the year before.”

Kupcho, a three-time Colorado Women’s Golf Association stroke play champion, has a scoring average of 70.94 in 16 rounds so far this college season and recently tied for second in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on March 8-10 with a 54-hole total of 3-under par 210.

She won her eighth individual college title on March 15-16 at the Tar Heel Classic in Case de Campo, Dominican Republic with scores of 66, 69 and 67 for a three-round total of 14-under par 202.

“That has sort of been the pattern for me while I’ve been in college,” explained Kupcho. “I kind of start slow and then get better as the spring season goes on. After playing so much during the summer, I come back and just want a break. Once I get it that sort of lights a fire for me. It would be really cool to win it (NCAA) two years in a row. Just going professional is going to be a big thing too.”

Kupcho has earned a Ladies Professional Golf Association card and will be turning pro after the college season concludes.

Getting dirty For some parents, instilling a love of nature and fostering independence go handin-hand.

“Letting kids outside, they learn their limits,” said Rebekah Eddy, a mom of two from Parker. “They’re able to understand what they’re capable of and what they’re not.”

One of the Eddy family’s favorite hikes is Maxwell Falls, west of Denver off Highway 285. Daughter Ella, 3, sometimes runs ahead of the pack — and Eddy lets her go.

“She’ll turn around when she feels too far away,” Eddy said. “Instinctually, kids need to develop their own sense of danger.

They’ll either do it when they’re kids or when they’re adults.”

Eddy grew up in Montana, and her husband Jason grew up in Alaska, so sometimes the suburban landscape of Parker can feel a bit blah.

“As kids, we’d run all over the place with zero supervision, so when we went house shopping, it was bizarre to look at houses with tiny yards and no trees,” Eddy said.

“We bought the house with the biggest yard we could find.”

Eddy is happy to let her kids get muddy.

“The natural world is generally safer than the constructs we put up that we think are safe,” Eddy said. “We’re increasingly in a sterile environment, and it affects immune systems. Synching your system to the natural microbes in the world is an answer that’s right in front of us.”

Learning to deal with discomfort is crucial, Eddy said.

“I tell my kids: it’s OK if you’re cold,” Eddy said. “Our generation, for some reason, wants so badly to take away all levels of discomfort.”

Eddy’s methods are paying off, she said.

“It’s exciting to get to originate a character and set the blueprint for future actors when they do the show,” said Genece.

“It’s great to just cut loose and when it’s a world premiere on this stage, what could be bigger?”
