Being a mom, wife I am a mom of two. I have a little boy, Jackson who is gonna turn 10 soon and a 6- year-old daughter Alivia.

I’ve lived in Colorado this time around for almost six years. I lived here previously for five years, but moved away for a while. I’ve been married for going on 15 years to my husband, Greg, who is a Colorado native. We met in Mexico when we were in college — different colleges. I work full-time for Wells Fargo as a national business initiative consultant.

Getting into pageants I’ve been doing pageants now for over 20 years. I got into them as a fluke. I was 15 and I never wore make up. I didn’t wear high heels or pantyhose. But I grew up dancing, so I was comfortable being on stage.

Our family had a local friend who ran a small pageant in my hometown in Indiana and they needed one more girl to compete. So, she asked me. When she did, my mom gave her this look and started laughing. As a 15-year-old, knowing I was awkward, that hurt a lot. But if you tell me I can’t something, that’s when I’m going to prove you wrong. I won that pageant. I was shocked to say the

college, and pageants were a way to diminish that cost burden for my family. I went on to be Miss Arizona in 2003 and Mrs. Arizona in 2010. It’s so much more than getting on stage and looking pretty.

Building confidence When we moved back to Colorado, I was working from home and feeling isolated. I felt that I wasn’t having the opportunity to expand my social circle. I wanted to do something that would get me out and meet people.

Having coached many contestants in pageants in the past, it started to intrigue me to compete again. A lot of coaching is just helping women realize their own self confidence.

Women, we tend to doubt ourselves at times and it’s just building them up and telling them they’ve got this. Then when they go on stage that confidence shines thought.

Competing in Mrs. Colorado This is now my fourth year competing in the Mrs. Colorado State Pageant. There are so many different things that keep me coming back. Ultimately, it comes down to is it’s an opportunity to do something that excited me, but at the same time I am able to make a huge impact in my community.

My kids are also learning so many valuable life lessons by watching me, that I don’t know if I could articulate to them. That’s been my main driver — allowing my kids to see

Volunteering with Make-a-Wish I’m a Make-a-Wish wish granter.

I’ve been volunteering four years now.

Originally, I got involved because when I was 12, a cousin of mine had cancer and we were part of her wish.

We had moved away and she wanted to see us. So, Make-a-Wish flew my family across the country. We wouldn’t have been able to do that if it wasn’t for the organization. I remember being touched by everything they did to try to make her wish come true even though she was in a coma at that time.

Looking for ways to get involved and being a mom, I wanted to do something with kids, so I went through wish granter training. I have had so much fun meeting kids and helping to make their wish come true.

Advocating for the terminally ill I work with another organization as well that is similar called Hope Kids.

It has a similar philosophy of providing experiences to kids that will last a lifetime. But they look at the whole family unit and more than one event.

A lot of my community involvement right now focuses on organizations that support terminally ill kids. My area of outreach for the pageant is supporting the terminally ill and their families.

My father is terminally ill. That’s one reason why I continue to compete.

I want to try to increase awareness of support to individuals. Terminal illness is something that we will all be touched by at some point in our life.

Garden plots available for Arvada residents STAFF REPORT

Arvada residents who want to garden but don’t have the room or simply enjoy gardening in a community environment are invited to apply for a plot at the Arvada Community Garden, 9195 W. 57th Ave. For $40 for the season, gardeners received a large garden plot, dawn to dusk access, running ditch water, some plants and seeds, a shared storage area, greenhouse access, hose and tool usage and remote garden monitoring. Community involvement, volunteer opportunities and plenty of free advice also are part of

the deal.

ADA raised bed plots are available for $25, and wheelchair plots are $15.

Upon completion of the paperwork and remittance, you will be assigned a plot on a first come, first served basis. New member orientation will be in late April; ditch water is turned on and pumps started about the same time.

Off-Market Transactions Hurt Sellers By Shutting Out Buyers Who Might Pay More

The sale of homes without listing them on the MLS can frustrate buyers waiting for a house matching their search criteria, only to learn that it was sold without an opportunity to bid on it. Given the chance, some of those frustrated buyers might have paid more than the selling price, in which case both those buyers and the sellers have been harmed.

This is an update of a column with the same headline published exactly a year ago. On March 22, t 2018, I wrote that in January and February of that year 4.4% of the sold listings were only entered on the MLS after closing. Looking at Jefferson County sales this January and February, that percentage is lower but still disturbing — 3.2% — with another 2.4% selling in one day, which is still not enough time to expose a listing to all potential buyers.

I have determined that with proper exposure — the kind provided by Golden Real Estate’s marketing — 4 days is the “sweet spot” for listing a home and getting the highest possible price for that listing.

In last year’s analysis I proved that point with the following statistics: Homes listed as sold on our MLS with zero days on market, sold on average for 99.7% of their median listing price, but homes with 1 to 4 days on market sold for 101.8% of their listing price. That’s a 2.1% differential, suggesting that if those offMLS listings had been on the MLS at least one day, their selling price could have been $7,875 higher on average.

Think of that as how much money the average home seller “left on the table” by not exposing their home to the full market.

It’s reasonable to ask how listing agents may have profited from keeping listings off

the MLS, because it certainly doesn’t appear as though their sellers did. An analysis of the listings that were entered as sold with zero days on market this January and February reveals that 34.6% of them were double-ended, meaning that the listing agent kept the entire commission instead of sharing it with a buyer’s agent. Homes which went under contract after 1 to 4 days on the MLS were double-ended at a much lower rate — 1.1%.. It seems pretty obvious to me that many listing agents are convincing their agents to sell without putting their home on the MLS so they can keep their entire commission — at the seller’s expense.

This is not to say that zero days on the market is never in the best interests of the seller. For example, the seller and buyer might know one another, or otherwise found each other, and simply asked an agent to handle the transaction without seeking other buyers. Or perhaps it was a for-sale-byowner (FSBO) property where an agent brought the buyer and entered the sale on the MLS after closing as a courtesy to other agents and to appraisers. Or a seller might not like the idea of opening their home to lots of strangers.

One would hope, however (and sellers should expect), that when a broker doubleends a transaction, he or she would at least give the seller a break on the commission, rather than keeping the portion (typically 2.8%) that would have been paid to a buyer’s agent. This practice is referred to as a “variable commission” and is office policy at Golden Real Estate.

Unfortunately, however, not a single one of the listings that was double-ended and sold without being put on the MLS offered

‘Preferential Voting’ Is a Great Method of Dealing With Primary Elections With a Dozen or More Candidates With over a dozen Democrats vying for their party’s presidential nomination, I have a modest proposal. Let the states holding primaries do what Australia does for most of its elections and employ a preferential voting system.

Under such a system, voters rank the candidates in their order of preference. If no candidate receives at least 50% of the votes, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated and the second choice of that candidate’s voters are counted. If that doesn’t produce 50% or more

votes for any candidate, the candidate with the now lowest vote count is eliminated and those voters’ next favorite candidates receive their votes. And so it continues until one candidate receives at least 50%, not just a plurality, of the votes.

If done for the general election, this could encourage third party candidates, because that candidate couldn’t function as a spoiler, because if the top candidate does not get at least 50% of the votes, the thirdparty candidate is eliminated and his/her voters’ second choices are counted.

The Colorado Real Estate Commission has expressed its concern about “coming soon” listings which could be used to increase the chances of a listing agent selling the property himself. In a June 2014 position statement, the Commission stated that “if the property is being marketed as ‘coming soon’ in an effort for the listing broker to acquire a buyer and ‘double end’ the transaction, this would be a violation of the license law because the broker is not exercising reasonable skill and care.” Further, “a broker who places the importance of his commission above his duties, responsibilities or obligations to the consumer who has engaged him is practicing business in a manner that endangers the interest of the public.”

REcolorado rules require that a listing be put on the MLS within 3 business days of the listing agreement being signed. However, that rule does not apply when the seller instructs the agent (in the listing contract) not to put their home on the MLS. As a member of REcolorado’s Rules & Regulations Committee, I have suggested that this rule be modified to state that the seller may instruct the agent to not make the listing active on the MLS, but they would still be required to enter the listing under a different status, including “under contract,” versus

not entering it at all or waiting until after it closes. Currently, if those off-market sales are entered on the MLS at all, it is done only after closing. By showing a home as under contract, there’s at least the possibility that interested buyers could submit back-up contracts, which could serve the seller’s interest if the original contract falls. I had no support for this idea on the committee.

he streets of Olde Town Arvada were packed March 16 with locals and visitors donning their most Irish attire for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival.

The annual street festival featured live stage music, as well as street performances by the Celtic Steps and Centennial State Pipes and Drums and plenty of food and drink.

Jeffco weathers power outages and closed schools County spared worst of bomb cyclone winter storm STAFF REPORT

Jefferson County communities saw a good amount of snow and wind out of the March 13 and 14 winter storm that swept across the middle of the country, resulting in power outages, road closures and back-to-back snow days for Jeffco Public School students.

The storm’s effects were felt across the state. Gov. Jared Polis authorized the activation of the Colorado National Guard and declared an emergency as the blizzard closed several major roadways.

The National Guard was activated to work in conjunction with the state office of Emergency Management and local EMS and law enforcement personnel for “search, rescue and lifesafety operations primarily focused on stranded motorists,” according to a news release from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Douglas County was among the areas hit hardest by the storm, and more than 700 people were rescued from stranded vehicles and taken to shelters, authorities said.

School districts as well as many city, county and state offices were closed around the Denver metro area as the late-winter storm rolled in the morning of March 13.

Golden’s Clear Creek flowed with snow melt March 14, the day after the blizzard dubbed the “bomb cyclone” hit Colorado. The storm brought nearly 13 inches of snow to Golden, one of the highest totals in the metro area. Snow and high winds caused power outages, road closures and two consecutive days of no school.

SHANNA FORTIER By mid-afternoon, the heaviest snow bands were east of I-25, according to the National Weather Service. There, wind gusts of up to 70 mph were being reported.

By the time the storm wrapped up, at least 5 inches of snow was common throughout the metro area. Some of the heaviest snowfall totals in the metro area were in Golden at nearly 13 inches and Aurora at 10 inches, with 8 inches being reported in Lone Tree, according to the weather service. Further to the east, Ponderosa Park, near Elizabeth in Elbert County, reportedly was hit with 14 inches of snow.

Across the metro area, Xcel Energy reported “extensive” power outages as of 2 p.m. Some media reports put the number of people without electricity at roughly 200,000 at one point.

“High winds have caused damage to a number of lines and poles,” Xcel reported on its website.

A spokesperson for Jeffco Public Schools said that power outages at several school sites were the primary cause for the district to declare March 14 a snow day as well.

A swath of Wheat Ridge was without power overnight. Among the buildings affected was Wardle Feed

and Pet Supply. Owner Shaun Pearman told the Transcript by phone that he had to keep an electric generator running through the night of the 13th to keep baby chicks alive, under heat lamps.

“It was a crazy couple of days trying to save all those birds,” he said.

Road closures mounted as the storm’s severity increased.

The I-25 corridor in Douglas County was completely closed for much of March 13. A stretch of the freeway south of Castle Rock remained closed most of March 14 as well.

I-70 was closed in both directions between Idaho Springs and Golden by noon on March 13 due to a crash.

I-70 east of Denver to Kansas remained closed overnight through mid-day March 14, CDOT said. Elbert County took the step of closing all county roads during the storm, due to whiteout conditions.

State of the County highlights successes and community challenges Inaugural event provides attendees an opportunity to learn about elected officials

Jefferson County is an engaged community.

About 330 attendees braved blizzard conditions to attend the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation’s (Jeffco EDC) inaugural State of the County address on March 13.

“I know how important our community is to you,” said Jefferson County Commissioner Libby Szabo.

“It’s great to see so many of you here, invested in our community.”

With three overarching themes of resiliency, efficiency and collaboration, the event highlighted each elected office, either through a video presentation or a short speech provided by each of the three commissioners, Szabo, Leslie Dahlkemper and Casey Tighe; County Manager Don Davis; and Kristi Pollard, Jeffco EDC’s president and CEO. It’s important to highlight successes, Pollard said, as well as address all of the community’s concerns, no matter if it is a delicate issue.

“At the end of the day, these are our elected officials,” Pollard said, “and

they want to be responsive to their constituents.”

Some of the county’s successes from 2018 include promoting innovation, safety and health, among other values, and how the business community and nonprofit sector work collaboratively with the county government for the economic vitality and overall well-being of the greater Jeffco community.

“We want to keep pushing the envelope,” Tighe said.

The event was informative, and it was exciting to hear some of the focuses of the county commissioners, said Applewood resident Tanner

Mason, a managing broker for Benchmark Commercial.

“And how they (the focuses) align with the business community,” Mason added.

Julie DiTullio of Wheat Ridge, the development coordinator for the Jefferson Center for Mental Health, especially liked that the county’s nonprofit organizations were highlighted, she said.

“The public benefits from these partnerships,” DiTullio said. “The more they know about them (partnerships with nonprofits), the greater the benefit.”

Some of the tougher issues that were addressed include fiscal realities, transportation and homelessness.

“We know there are no easy answers to these complex issues,” Dahlkemper said. “But we also know that Jefferson County works together.

One of our greatest strengths as a county is forming partnerships to solve tough issues.”

‘The chaos of all the different stuff you can find’ Beautiful Junk Sale attracts those who shop for a good cause

Thousands upon thousands of trinkets and knickknacks, gizmos and gadgets filled the 10,500 square-feet space of the Exhibit Hall at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Golden.

“You never know what you’re going to find” at the Beautiful Junk Sale, said Tawney Eisenbraun, the Action Center’s marketing coordinator. “There’s an eclectic collection of items, but it’s especially impressive because it’s all donated by the community.”

The Beautiful Junk Sale is a two-day mega thrift sale put on by The Action Center that takes place twice each year, in the spring and the fall. The Action Center is a human-services nonprofit that helps Jefferson County residents experiencing homelessness or struggling to meet basic needs, attain self-sufficiency. All the proceeds from the volunteer-run Beautiful Junk Sale benefit The Action Center.

“It’s fun finding something different and unique,” said Linda New of Lakewood who has been attending both the spring and fall Beautiful Junk Sales for about five years.

“Inside church basements is how it all began,” Eisenbraun said. “Then it just grew and grew and grew.”

The sale itself is a well-organized event, said Rebecca McAlister who has been volunteering with The Action Center for about nine years. But the fun about it is the chaos of all the different stuff you can find, she added.

Sandy Jensen has also volunteered with The Action Center for about nine years, and the Beautiful Junk Sale is something she and her daughter Marci enjoy doing together.

“We think The Action Center is a great organization because it serves the citizens of Jefferson County,” Sandy Jensen said.

Fred Ahr of Pine Grove has been shopping at both the spring-and fallBeautiful Junk Sales for probably the past 10 years because his wife Jane brings him along, he said.

They look at everything, this time finding a “really beautiful (purple) tea kettle,” Ahr said, but the most interesting thing about the Beautiful Junk Sales are the people — the shoppers and the volunteers.

“They’re friendly and enjoy saying hello,” Ahr said. “This day and age, sadly, that’s unusual.”

Nine-year-old Zoie Trujillo was especially excited to find some Barbie stuff on March 15 because she’s “never seen Barbie tree ornaments before,” she said.

Trujillo of Lakewood and her mom have been coming to the spring-andfall Beautiful Junk Sales for about two-or-three years, she said.

She said she likes finding new things, “because then I get to have new stuff.”

Some people come for the fun of thrift shopping, Penning said. They find a replacement for a beloved antique or collectable that, years ago, ended up getting broken somehow, Penning said. Or, they find an item that sparks a memory or reminds them of a time in their past, such as a particular cooking utensil their grandmother used in her kitchen, she added.

“Others simply want to support The Action Center,” Penning said. “Beautiful Junk Sale attracts people who care about the community. It’s human beings helping each other.”

Bill aims to stop most scanner encryption

As more law enforcement and fire agencies across the state encrypt or consider encrypting their dispatch radio traffic, a bill was introduced March 12 that seeks to halt the trend.

Blocking the public and news organizations from listening to scanner communications has spurred debate in recent months between media analysts, who say the information is necessary for government transparency, and public-safety leaders, who argue encryption can keep personnel safer.

House Bill 19-1235 would require most entities of the state government and of cities, counties and special districts to allow their dispatch radio communications to be heard by the public on radio, scanners or online. The bill excepts “tactical” and investigative communications if necessary for safety.

State Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, is the bill’s sponsor.

Here’s a look at some of the other bills drawing attention this legislative session, the four-month part of the year when state lawmakers pass bills, which ends May 3.

Senate Bill 19-188 passed the Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee on a 3-2 vote March 13 and moves to the Finance Committee before eventual consideration by the full Senate.

It was approved 26-9 on March 15 and moved to the House for consideration.

Senate Bill 19-012 would make use of cellphones while driving — except with a hands-free device — illegal for everyone. Currently, state law bars anyone under 18 from using cellphones while driving.

The bill is sponsored by state Sen. Lois Court, D-Denver, and state Rep. Jovan Melton, D-Aurora.

Jefferson County Public Schools’ proposed budget prioritizes things like family engagement, at-risk student support, maintaining dropout support and expansion of a teacher residency program.

The board of education heard these recommendations first at the March 7 public meeting and talked through them again at the March 13 study session, when they gave recommendations for changes.

Kathleen Askelson, chief financial officer for Jeffco schools, and her staff are working to build the 2019-2020 proposed budget through April.

Some questions from the board in March 13 discussion revolved around $135,000 set aside to expand the district’s participation in the Boettcher Residency Program, operated by the Public Education and Business Coalition.

Arvada talks solving homelessness at Community Impact Breakfast In 2018, 14% were newly homeless in Jefferson County

Experts working with individuals experiencing homelessness agree that lack of affordable housing and services, stigma and a “not in my backyard” attitude are some of the greatest challenges in combating homelessness.

“I think there’s largely a misunderstanding of the complex issue with homelessness,” said Scott Shields, CEO of Family Tree, a nonprofit that works with people affected by child abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness. “I cannot think of one new initiative that we did not receive significant community pushback. I think that one of the most significant barriers we have is a general misunderstanding of why people are experiencing homelessness in our community.”

The many layers and complexities of homelessness was the topic of discussion at the Community Impact Breakfast held March 15 by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce.

The topic is one that has been coming to light more and more of the past couple years as the visible homeless population in Arvada and Jefferson

County continues to grow.

“Hidden homelessness is becoming less hidden,” said Dr. Mark Johnson, executive director of Jefferson County Public Health. People move around and they move to areas where they feel safer and feel there are more benefits.

I think we’re seeing people move out of Denver and into Jefferson County mainly because they feel safer out here and it’s becoming something that is much more visible than it has been in the past.”

The 2018 Point in Time Count recorded 577 individuals in Jefferson County experiencing literal homelessness — staying in a shelter, transitional housing or sleeping unsheltered outside. Of that, 14 percent were newly homeless and 51 percent were families.

“We’re seeing families experiencing homelessness due to the cost-of-living in Jefferson County,” said Jessica Hansen, with Jefferson County Human Services. “We do not have access to affordable housing in our community. Currently in Jeffco, our vacancy rate is under 3 percent, which goes to show the challenges for individuals finding a place to be.”

Under the McKinney-Vento definition of homelessness, which includes students who are displaced and living in unstable environments, over 3,000 students in Jeffco Public Schools are experiencing homelessness.

If you can’t beat them, slow them down.

That’s the strategy Republicans at the state Capitol turned to recently to hold up a controversial oil and gas bill, requesting that a different, 2,000-page measure be read aloud to halt work in the Senate.

The maneuver didn’t have lasting impact: Democrats had multiple computer programs read the bill at unintelligible speed, a move that drew a Denver court to temporarily prohibit the practice.

Democrats hold majorities in the state Senate and House.

Voters rejected Proposition 112, the effort to set new oil and gas development farther away from buildings and bodies of water, in November, but the push to change Colorado’s political oil and gas landscape is alive and well with Democrats.

The “most significant and meaningful reform to oil and gas regulations that have passed the Senate in over

60 years,” as state Senate Democrats called it in a news release, would give more control to local governments in regulating oil and gas activity. Under the bill, local governments would have more say over land use and more ability to monitor the industry, among other powers.

More broadly, the bill would change the declared intent of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission — the agency that oversees the industry — to “regulate” oil and gas development to protect public health and safety, rather than to “foster” development in a manner “consistent” with those values.

Two organizations that represent the industry decried the passage of the bill in the state Senate in a March 13 news release.

The bill “could damage Colorado’s economy for years to come,” the statement from the Colorado Oil and Gas Association and the Colorado Petroleum Council said. “We remain shocked that a measure so consequential to the

“Teachers in the program have long staying powers and outcomes relatively higher than other new teachers,” Jeffco Schools Superintended Jason Glass told the board.

Some schools in Jeffco already participate in this residency, using schoolbased budget dollars to do so.

This line item would bring nine teachers from the program to Jeffco for fieldtraining.

“I think this sounds like a reasonable investment,” said board member Ali Lasell. “This is a modest place to start and will give us something to measure as far as its success for Jeffco.”

Its sponsors — all Democrats — are Fenberg, state Sen. Mike Foote, of Lafayette; state House Speaker KC Becker, of Boulder; and state Rep. Yadira Caraveo, of Thornton.

VOICES Having fun with dys-fun-ctional phrases

hen I started to write this column about words and phrases we commonly misuse or misstate – usually unintentionally ALCHEMY – I realized that it would be a long road to hoe … sort of like playing a game of blind man’s bluff.

What’s that you say? It’s blind man’s buff ? And I should be saying long row to hoe?

Well, you’re right.

I was completely Andrea Doray dumbfounded to learn – after 40 years of saying blind man’s bluff and not know what that

meant either – that the term refers to a kind of tag where the player who is “it” is blindfolded. In the traditional name (from the 1590s or earlier), the word buff is used to mean a small push. Who knew?

What I do know, though, that it has always been long row to hoe … perhaps because I grew up surrounded by the vibrant potato fields of the San Luis Valley. But many people are surprised to learn about this one as well.

Although these are common examples of misused words, they don’t really qualify as dys-fun-ctional phrases, those that get truly convoluted, or are pieces of several idioms conflated into one truly amusing expression.

My sister and I have been collecting these phrases for more than 30 years. For example, I once had a colleague who did usually get her point across, even though she was prone to saying things such as telling us, when we needed buy-in for a marketing plan, that we would have to “pave the door” to get the approval.

Another workplace provided a wealth of dys-fun-ctional phrases, such as “cutting off your nose despite your face.” Kind of like looking for an address on the “north-hand side of the road.” And I’ll never forget that we should just go out and “grab it by the bullhorns.”

I do find it hard to choose my favorite from among these gems, though, because, as was described to

My grandparents James (Jim) and Trudy Livesay have been involved with the Astor House for over 70 years, and have loaned or donated several family heirlooms and items, including the “Seth Lake Quilt” to be displayed. Since they have both passed, my mom and I would like to carry on this tradition by sharing never-before seen items from Seth Lake, and Carlos Lake with the MOR organization.

In addition to the events section of the MOR proposal, we would ask that this space also be considered for a possible SPARK! location in Golden. SPARK! was started by my mom and myself through the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association in memory of my grandmother, Trudy Livesay. The program connects guests with early memory loss and their families to cultural experiences and meaningful connections through the Alzheimer’s Association and a variety of museums and community partners.

My husband Lt. Colonel Gary Ross, will be retiring from the Army next year, and we plan to make Golden our home. It’s important to us to express our desire to see the Museum of Reinterpretation come to life. We also believe that the MOR is the best way to maintain the small-town character of the town, and support the council’s Connected Community Initiative #2.

Time to open banking up to pot industry

oday, 47 states plus the District of Columbia – representing 97.7 percent of the population – have legalized some form of adult recreational, medical or limited-medical use of marijuana. The majority of American voters have spoken and it’s happening whether we act or not.

That’s why, following the first-ever congressional hearing on the issue of cannabis banking, I have again introduced bipartisan legislation to allow marijuana-related businesses in states with existing regulatory structures to access the banking system. H.R. 1595, the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act of 2019, or SAFE Banking Act, is focused solely on taking cash off the streets and making our communities safer.

Fight factory farming All over the United States, we maintain an endless amount of factory farms- in 2012 there was a recorded 2.1 million factory farms in America alone. In Colorado, we participate in nationwide Ag-gag laws, which are laws in the agriculture industry that prevent bystanders and workers to record and/or reveal the realities of how factory farms function internally.

There are many issues within, but to name one, the space given to animals in factory farms are minimal and don’t always provide for basic walking space, let alone the right amount of positive interaction and care necessary for them to thrive.

are unable to accept credit or debit cards, deposit revenues, or write checks to meet payroll or pay taxes.

Only Congress can provide the certainty financial institutions need to start banking legitimate marijuana businesses – just like any other legal business – and reduce risks for employees, businesses and communities across the country. Already, the SAFE Banking Act has the support of 108 House members.

While other legislation has been introduced to address different problems faced by businesses in these states, the SAFE Banking Act is the only legislation that prohibits federal banking regulators from taking adverse actions against financial institutions which protects banks and credit unions so these legitimate businesses can access the banking system.

I have introduced similar legislation every Congress since 2013,

however it has not received one hearing until this year. During the February 13 hearing, support for the SAFE Banking Act was vocalized by several witnesses, including in testimony from California State Treasurer Fiona Ma and the American Bankers Association. The Independent Community Bankers of America, the Credit Union National Association and 19 Attorneys General endorsed the SAFE Banking Act last Congress.

The genie is out of the bottle. It’s now up to Congress to address this banking crisis and align federal and state laws. The SAFE Banking Act supports states’ rights and protects public safety, and I look forward to continuing to push this important legislation forward over the coming weeks and months.

‘Our Town’ takes rare turn in the round

Tips and tricks for starting gardens in spring, early summer

H

umanity has always had a connection with the earth, said John Stolzle, a Colorado State University Extension agent in Jefferson County who specializes in horticulture, plant pathology and food systems.

“Gardening is a direct way for people to interact with nature’s processes,” Stolzle said.

However, with the state’s diverse — and often unpredictable — weather, Colorado can present greater challenges to gardeners than many other U.S. states.

Luckily, Stolzle said, “there are a few tips and tricks that can help when starting up spring and summer gardens.”

It all depends on the last frost Planting in Colorado is highly weather dependent and each year is different, Stolzle said.

But one tip to remember is not to start too early, Stolzle said.

“The key, in my opinion, is to be patient,” he said. “And to plant according to the last predicted frost date.”

Because the latter varies regionally, paying close attention to local weather forecasts may be the best bet. In general, gardeners can bestguess that the last frost date will likely be sometime late April or early May, Stolzle said.

PlantTalk Colorado, a resource for Coloradans to find research-based gardening information specific to Colorado’s diverse climate, suggests that “people in the Denver metropolitan area normally use Mother’s Day as a guide for when to plant.”

This year, Mother’s Day falls on May 12.

COURTESY OF THE GROWHAUS For those who want to get an early start on their gardens, Coloradans can plant seedlings indoors, then transplant them outdoors when the weather is appropriate.

General recommendations on when to start plants indoors range from two to eight weeks before transplantation, Stolzle said. But to get a more exact time frame for each plant, he said, seed packets will usually include the specific recommendations for that plant.

Acclimating plants to the outdoors before planting them outside can also help, Stolzle said.

But, to “avoid shocking their systems, plants should be introduced to the outdoors slowly, over time,” Stolzle said.

Grandma’s tip to avoid a freeze The location of a plant, the duration of a cold spell and temperature can all play a part in a plant freezing, Stolzle said.

Colorado State University Extension’s Colorado Master Gardeners are volunteers trained in horticulture. Master Gardeners have a plethora of troubleshooting information and advice for new and experienced gardeners, available all year round.

Even if you’re not a theater fan, you’ve probably come across it in some form or another.

Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” is perhaps the quintessential example of this.

First produced in 1938, the three-act play explores small-town Americana, nostalgia and the struggles that accompany everyday life. In other words, it’s about all of us.

Clarke Reader “It’s a show that does one of the best jobs of making sense of the mystery we live out every day,” said Jim Hunt, who plays the role of Stage Manager. “It’s universal because of the way it captures the changes we all experience in our daily lives.”

Directed by Len Matheo, “Our Town” takes audiences to the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, between 1901 and 1913. The Stage Manager serves as the narrator and chronicler of the town’s happenings, which include the big events — birth, love, death and everything in between.

While Wilder’s words remain very much intact in Miners’ production, the company is playing with the visuals a bit by having the actors wear contemporary clothing, and the show will be presented in the round — a rarity at the theater.

The show includes some heavy moments (just like life) but there are plenty of humorous moments and wise lines to make the darkness a little more bearable.

“Wilder did an unbelievable job of capturing the essence of what it means to be alive,” Hunt said. “I think people will connect with it and since it’s being produced in Golden, they might recognize some of their own small town on the stage.”

A Colorado Master Gardener reference sheet published by Colorado State University Extension notes that “grandma’s old method of covering the garden with blankets and sheets works well as long as the fabric remains dry.” The cover should be placed in the evening before a frost is suspected, but it must be removed the next day so the sunlight can recharge the soil with heat.

Cool versus warm season veggies “Knowing the difference between cool and warm season vegetables can save a lot of headache,” Stolzle said. “But, in all of these cases, a cold, hard freeze will likely kill any plants left out or left unprotected.”

Hardy, cool season vegetables: Hardy, cool season vegetables prefer cooler temperatures and can likely survive a “frosty nip,” Stolzle said.

They can be planted outside about two to four weeks before the anticipated last frost date of the season.

Examples include onions, some spinach, lettuce, radish and broccoli.

Tender, warm season vegetables: Tender, warm season vegetables do not tolerate frost and need higher temperatures to grow well, Stolzle said. They should be planted when daytime temperatures are above at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Examples include cucumbers, New Zealand spinach and summer squash.

Sensitive vegetables: Some vegetables are even more sensitive than the tender, warm season vegetables, Stolzle said. These can only tolerate a low temperature of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit and prefer temperatures between about 70 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Examples include tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, watermelon and eggplant.

The Renaissance man comes to life New exhibit marks 500 years since da Vinci’s death

The “Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius” exhibit is one of the most comprehensive ever created about the Italian master. Visitors will get to explore his innovations in art, sciences, engineering and more.

To-do lists are a fairly common feature of daily life in the 21st century, but it turns out this organizational method has been around for centuries — just ask Italian Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci.

While most of us have things like “do the shopping” or “clean the kitchen,” items on da Vinci’s list involved things like finding a way to measure the size of the sun and study the tongue of a woodpecker.

Insights like these are among things visitors to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s “Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius” exhibit can learn about one of humanity’s most adventurous thinkers.

“On one list, da Vinci had written that he should try to buy some corn, which had just been brought from the new world,” said Stephen Nash, curator of archaeology at the museum. “The audacity of these lists is just incredible.

It gives you a look into the mind of the man.”

Presented at the museum, 2001 Colorado Blvd., by the Sturm Family Foundation through Aug. 25, the exhibit is one of the most comprehensive about da Vinci that has ever been created. It was made in honor of 2019 being the 500th anniversary of his death.

Today, da Vinci is recognized as an innovator in the fields of art, science, engineering and other disciplines.

But examples of his work were mostly scattered or destroyed following his death. The few surviving artifacts are in private collections or permanently housed in museums.

Exhibitions worked with the Museo Leonardo da Vinci in Rome and experts from Italy and France to build replicas of da Vinci’s inventions and paintings.

They also created replicas of his books, notes and sketches, gathered in codices, or manuscripts from that time.

“What creates a person that is so far advanced, perhaps more so than anybody else in history?” asked George Sparks, president and CEO of the DMNS. “Our staff spent a lot of time working to make this exhibit our own at the museum as we thought about these questions.”

Using the man’s notes from his codices, creators were able to build reproductions of about 70 of da Vinci’s inventions, including crude attempts at machines like a helicopter, airplane, car, submarine and military tank. The replicas are made using the materials and techniques of 15th-century Italy.

Some of the inventions are scaled

down, some are life-sized and others are oversized and some have mechanisms visitors can try for themselves.

As da Vinci is most well-known for his artwork, his creations in the medium take a special place in the exhibit.

There are print reproductions of his Florentine oil paintings, like “The Annunciation” and “Virgin on the Rocks.”

There is also an animation of “The Last Supper,” which provides a look at what makes it such a unique work.

motion graphics and surround sound, combined with authentic photography and video footage. The end result gives the visitor a feeling of being immersed in da Vinci’s mind.

Unsurprisingly, its da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” that gets the most in-depth exploration. The exhibit provides an analysis of the iconic painting conducted at the Louvre by scientific engineer and photographer Pascal Cotte. According to the museum’s information, the display includes super-magnified examinations, a 13-foot-high infrared print and the only 360-degree replica ever made of “Mona Lisa.”

The museum prides itself on bringing its own touch to the exhibits, and that shines through in the presence of the museum’s enactors, who will be wandering through the exhibit as characters who bring a personal perspective to the story of da Vinci and the age in which he lived.

As da Vinci neared the end of his life, he supposedly said “I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have.”

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in Anchiano, Italy, near the Tuscan town of Vinci. He was born out of wedlock to a notary and a peasant woman. da Vinci never received a traditional formal education. His natural gifts caught the attention of his mentors.

He moved to Milan around 1481 after convincing Duke Ludovico Sforza of his talents as an artist and engineer. His work began to expand to studies of architecture, military engineering and strategy, mechanical flight, theatrical production and music. da Vinci began “Mona Lisa” in 1503, but the painting remained unfinished at his death years later.

He accepted an invitation from François I to move to France in 1516.

After suffering a stroke in 1517, da Vinci died on May 2, 1519, in Clos Lucé, France. He is buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert in the castle of Amboise.

Applewood’s Carl F. Eiberger II dies at age 88

Education, open space and helping others.

Those are three of Carl Eiberger’s passions that he will be remembered for.

“Carl was a great friend and an outstanding lawyer,” said U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, a former neighbor and family friend of Eiberger’s, “as well as a good citizen who helped keep Applewood and Golden a great place to live.”

Carl F. Eiberger II, 88, died from illness on March 6 in his home in Applewood.

Growing up during the Great Depression in extreme poverty, Eiberger was born in the slums of Denver on Jan. 17, 1931.

“He used education as a way out of poverty,” his daughter Mary Eiberger said. “He never wanted his children to live one day in the poverty that he grew up in.”

Eiberger graduated high school as valedictorian from St. Joseph Catholic School in Denver in 1948. He turned down a full-ride scholarship to Princeton. Instead he studied at the University of Notre Dame on a small scholarship, supplemented by working in the school’s kitchens — cleaning and emptying garbage.

He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in chemistry in 1952.

Eiberger earned his Juris Doctorate Degree, again graduating magna cum laude, from Notre Dame in 1954. That

passed,” wrote the author of the March 2019 Colorado Notre Dame Lawyers’ Committee News. “There is no doubt that Carl was the driving force in opening the lines of communication of Notre Dame lawyers and aspiring lawyers in Colorado … And those of us older than 40 will remember Carl’s annual end of the year letters encouraging contributions to Notre Dame Law School to support student scholarships.”

Eiberger served on the board of the Notre Dame Law Association for more than 50 years, and following that, remained active as a member of the Law School Advisory Council.

The Rev. David Link, former dean of the Notre Dame Law School, met Eiberger in 1975 when Eiberger was a member of the advisory council. Eiberger served in that role for the entire time of Link’s deanship, Link said.

“He was an advisor with the highest of standards,” Link said. “His loyalty was not only to the school, but to each individual student and faculty member.

Many Notre Dame law alumni owe their successful careers to Carl’s definition of principled practice.”

Eiberger offered First Judicial District Judge Laura A. Tighe her first job in Colorado in 1986, she said.

“Carl had a remarkable record in assisting new attorneys secure their first job,” Tighe said. “He was a wonderful mentor to me and countless other attorneys in the Denver legal community.”

Tighe added that Eiberger continued to send notes of encouragement throughout her legal career, even after her appointment to the bench.

Along with being a proud alumnus of Notre Dame, Eiberger was also a proud Army veteran of the Korean War (1950-1953).

Eiberger eventually returned to Colorado and married Arvada native Margurette Dickerson. The two had four children — Carl Frederick III, Mary, James and Eileen. Margurette and Eileen preceded him in death. He is survived by his three other children, who all reside in Colorado; two grandchildren; and his long-time companion, Dr. Carol Schneider.

Mary Eiberger said she recalls waterskiing on Sloan’s Lake every weekend in the summer and snow skiing trips to the mountains in the winter. Often, the latter included Eiberger working on his briefs in the lodge while his children hit the slopes.

She also remembers the entire family piling into the station wagon and driving the thousands of miles across the U.S. to visit museums, Civil War monuments, the Liberty Bell, a satellite launch at Cape Canaveral and other places of historic or educational significance.

“Instead of having us read about history, my dad taught us history,” Mary Eiberger said.

In 1958, Eiberger and Dickerson were one of the first few to build a home in the Applewood community of Golden.

“He saw the west side develop, (but) he wanted to help keep it natural,” Mary Eiberger said, adding he helped to create 11 parks in the area. “He loved nature and he loved Colorado. But more

than anything, he did it for the people.”

As a longtime board member of the Prospect Recreation & Park District, Eiberger is the founder of Applewood Park, an 11-acre park located at 1840 Alkire Court in Golden. A plaque near the playground marks the recognition.

Specializing in labor and employment, Eiberger practiced law in the Denver area for more than 65 years.

Some of his notable clients include AT&T, Proctor and Gamble, Old Bell systems, Conoco, AAA and the Denver Post.

Eiberger also served as advisory council to the Colorado Department of Labor, appointed to the role by former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm, who served three terms from 1975-1987.

Eiberger’s “biggest passion was giving back to the community,” Mary Eiberger said.

He felt so strongly about it, she added, that he donated an estimated $2 million worth of free legal work throughout his lifetime, according to family.

“We wouldn’t have a South Table Mountain Park if it weren’t for Carl Eiberger,” said Don Parker, president F of Save the Mesas, a citizens group that exists to ensure that the land, that is not privately owned, on Golden’s table mountains remains open space.

Parker met Eiberger sometime in the mid-1990s, but the two got to know each other when Save the Mesas formed to keep Nike from headquartering on South Table Mountain in 1998. Parker described Eiberger as determined, committed and generous.

Eiberger was involved with Save the Mesas of the late-1990s, Parker said, but it was during the approximate 20year quarry proposal for South Table Mountain that he will likely be most recognized for.

In a March 12, 1998, article, Westword reported that Leo “Bradley and Coors first proposed a quarry on top of South Table in 1975.” The Jefferson County commissioners denied a rezone request for the proposed quarry in 1982, following 98 public hearings. However, Westword reported, “six years later, the proposal was revived but was withdrawn following a public outcry.”

In 1992, Bradley requested a mining permit for the land from the Mined Land Reclamation Board, but that was denied in 1994 — the board citing a lack of adequate environmental and engineering studies.

A coalition of 14 homeowners’ groups took the lead in opposition to the quarry plans, representing about 5,000 households in the immediate area of South Table Mountain, according to reporting by Westword.

Eiberger handled much of the legal work on behalf of the citizen opposers.

He did it pro bono, telling Westword at the time that he estimated it was about $500,000 worth of free legal work for the quarry issue alone.

Parker said he is grateful for the efforts of Eiberger and others, namely, the late Betty McFerren, who led the efforts of saving South Table Mountain.

“The only thing we did,” Parker said referring to the Save the Mesas group, “was pick up the torch where they left it.”

McWhorter spoke without a script but sounded as if he were reading from one. There were no “uh’s,” and every thought flowed from the preceding one, and led into the next one.

Talnua brings nearly extinct style of whiskey to Arvada The distillery opened St. Patrick’s Day weekend

What is likely the only distillery outside of Ireland to make triple distilled single pot still whiskey officially opened in Arvada St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Opening Talnua Distillery was a dream come true for Patrick Miller and his wife, Meagan Miller. Using locally sourced barley, yeast harvested from the oldest stout producing brewery in Ireland, and a unique single pot still distilling method has allowed them to create a robust, American oak-aged whiskey.

The word Talnua, is a combination of the Irish Gaelic words “Talamh” and “Nua”, meaning New Land or New Earth.

“Irish traditions, Colorado barley and Rocky Mountain water,” Patrick Miller said. “What could be better than that?”

The Millers and their business partners Robert Siegrist and Amy Kingman started renovating the space at 5405 W. 56th Ave. in Arvada in July 2017. The first week in March 2018, they started producing their first batch of whiskey. On March 16, 2,700 bottles of that whiskey, which was aged in 130 barrels

The Miller’s family heritage and frequent trips to Ireland is what drew them to this style of whiskey.

“They were always our favorite styles of whiskey — we loved them,” Miller said. “We loved the history behind it and uncovering that.”

Talnua Distillery’s 1,100 square foot tasting room will be open for tastings and tours every weekend or by appointment. Along with spirits, the tasting room boasts a clear glass wall, allowing visitors to see into the distillery’s operations and aging room.

A grand opening was held March 16.

“Don’t you love the entrepreneurial spirit,” Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said at the ribbon cutting. “The folks who put everything into the game — their time, their energy, their money, their sweat, their tears — because they want to do something unique.

And this is certainly something unique. We’re absolutely thrilled to have them in Arvada.”

“We always wanted to create a brand that wasn’t just a craft brand,” Miller said. “We wanted to bring the history and heritage into the brand and really tell the story because the distilling traditions between Ireland and America have always been incredibly strong and it’s fun to get to tell that to people who haven’t herd it before and bring back a style that nearly went extinct.”

Single pot still whiskey was once the most popular style of whiskey in the

world. It emerged as a means of avoiding a tax introduced in 1785 on the use of malted barley. However, with the rise of cheaper-to-make blended whiskeys in the 20th century, single pot still whiskey declined in popularity, and many brands changed their production style.

Then the rise of Scotch whiskey.

By 1980, only two single pot whiskey distillers remained.

Now, there are just under 10 distilleries using this method — all in

Irish storyteller among presenters at conference Story Seeds event features local, national and international storytellers STAFF REPORT

Those who love telling stories, as well as those who love to listen to them, will enjoy three events planned during the Rocky Mountain Storytelling conference April 12-13 at the American Mountaineering Center at 710 10th St. in Golden.

Rocky Mountain Storytelling, a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization based in Golden, presents a conference, a public concert and a story slam during its Story Seeds Conference and Concert.

“We are very excited to bring the annual conference and concert back to Golden this year,” Rocky Mountain Storytelling President and Board Member Kate Lutz said in a news release. “It has become more important than ever to preserve the art of storytelling as the age of digital communication continues to boom. We feel this event is the perfect way to hear some fascinating storytellers and inspire a new generation to learn how to both share and enjoy this art.”

The public concert, “Friday Evening Stories in Concert,” begins at 7 p.m.

April 12 and features Irish storyteller Liz Weir; author, performer and educator Angel Vigil; and bilingual storyteller and podcaster Carolina Quiroga-Stultz.

The concert is targeted to an adult audience; children older than 10 are welcome.

The Story Seeds conference is April 13 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Weir will give the keynote presentation, and workshops are led by Glenda Bonin, Mark Goldman, Yvonne Healy, Maureen Korte, Julie Moss and Elaine Muray. Laura Deal, Pam Faro, Yvonne Healy, Elaine Muray, Susan Scott-Stevens, John Stansfield and 2018 RMS Story Slam Winner Dave Starr also will perform.

Conference ticket price includes lunch, the Friday concert and a ticket to the story slam, which will follow the conference at 7 p.m. April 13. The story slam includes personal and traditional tales on the theme of “illusion.”

Attendees are invited to bring their best five-minute story and put their name in a hat. Ten storytellers will be chosen to perform, and a panel of judges will determine the winner and award a prize. Storytellers are not allowed to bring notes on the stage.

“The concert, conference and slam will be filled with stories that entertain, delight and make you think,” Lutz said in the release. “Adults love stories. If you love listening to stories or are just curious about a storytelling concert, come and enjoy the Friday evening concert and Saturday Slam. Want more? SPORTS Ralston Valley baseball piles up the runs in 3-0 start

ARVADA — Ralston Valley has gotten out of the gates in a hurry to start the spring baseball season.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 on the season with a 14-4 victory over Grandview on Monday, March 11. The home victory came off the heels of a 3-0 shutout victory Saturday where senior Joey Steiskal threw a complete-game, no-hitter against Lincoln.

“Three games in four days. We are going to have more games than (outdoor) practices,” Ralston Valley coach Brad Madden said before the Mustangs grabbed a third victory on the season with a 13-6 home win over Brighton on Tuesday, March 12, before the ‘bomb cyclone’ storm hit the Denver Metro Area, postponing most baseball game for the remainder of the week. “Anytime you have a senior team you want to just get yourself going. It feels like these guys have been waiting a lot time to get this season going.”

Ralston Valley’s offense really got cracking in the bottom of the third inning against Grandview to help out Mustangs’ starting pitcher Calvin Hunt, who gave up four runs in the first two innings.

The Wolves held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the third thanks to a two-run home run by senior Jayden Martinez and two-run double by junior Isaac Smith. However, the Mustangs trampled over Grandview’s pitchers in the third.

“It was great. We really want to get the bats going,” Ralston Valley senior Otto Jones said. “We want to help Calvin because he always tries his best out there. Just try to get the ball in play and sometimes you get the barrel on it. In this park the ball really flies.”

Jones started the 10-run third inning with a single. He belted a two-run home run later in the inning that pushed Ralston Valley’s lead to 10-4.

When the dust finally cleared, the Mustangs belted 11 hits and sent 15 batters to the plate.

“It was up and down the line-up and then we scored six runs with two outs,” Madden said of the third inning. “One of the things we have talked about a lot is when we have guys in scoring position we have to drive them in. No matter how many outs you can’t give up on an inning. They did that today.”

Seniors AJ Jergensen, Trey Adams and Jones all had home runs. The Mustangs 1 through 6 hole hitters combined for 15 of 16 hits for Ralston Valley.

Ralston Valley finished off the game with a bases-loaded single by senior Owen Grimm that scored Adams to induce the 10-rule mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning with no outs.

Vista, Legend take game to Arizona diamonds

N

ow that the winter sports season is over and driveway is finally clear of snow, it is time to catch up on a few other things.

First off, the Mountain Vista and Legend baseball teams displayed good timing. There were no baseball, soccer or lacrosse games played OVERTIME in Colorado on March 13 or 14 because of snow.

Golf or track events were also postponed.

However Vista and Legend did play baseball because they were in the Jim Benton Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona in the Phoenix area. The Douglas County School District didn’t go on spring break until the week of March 18-22 but Vista and Legend players didn’t miss too much school because of two snow days.

Ralston Valley senior Calvin Hunt picked up a complete-game victory in his first start on the mound this spring season. Hunt had eight strikeouts in the 14-4 win over Grandview.

“I don’t care who is hitting up there.

We are confident in every single guy.

We know we are going to pick each other up,” Jergensen said of the Mustangs’ line-up.

It was a good sign that Hunt regrouped after a few bumps in the opening innings on the mound. Hunt walked three batters of which all scored. The hard-throwing righty got into a grove facing the minimum nine batters in the final three innings.

Hunt finished with eight strikeouts to get the complete-game victory.

“Calvin is great,” Otto said. “He is always a competitor and never gives

up on himself. He holds himself to the highest standard.”

Madden was happy to see Hunt hold his emotions in check to cruise through the final three innings.

“It’s been an interesting year so far weather wise,” Jergensen said. “We are just trying to take advantage of these raw experiences and getting our chemistry going. It’s been great so far.”

Withey’s mother was a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan and his dad, Jim, was a semi-professional baseball player in Harvey, Illinois.

Spring weather in Colorado is always an exciting mixed bag. Faith Girls Soccer (1-0) was able to beat the blizzard of 2019 by a few hours and in the process secure a solid 3-1 victory over Frontier Academy (0-2). In what turned out to be beautiful evening, Faith was able to put together two very solid defensive halves along with timely offense to get the 2019 season off to a good start.

Coach Amber Jenkins has put together an experienced group in some spots and a solid group of newcomers to her lineup. JoJo Wilkie got the scoring going in the first half by scoring off a cross and putting it in the back of the net. Frontier Academy struggled against a stout Eagles defense but Lilliian Leschinsky turned a misplay by the

“You don’t do this to win championships but I can’t imagine writing a better story,” said Evans. “My family and I moved out here from Kansas City in June. I had hopes of doing something like this in the future but to do it in our first year is just amazing.

“The kids did it. I didn’t come out here not knowing I had these good players. I watched Jana (Van Gytenbeek) play but a lot of these kids didn’t play a whole lot last year. We said it all year, one team, one goal, we’re going to find a way.”

LAKEWOOD — Green Mountain’s girls soccer team has stormed its way to an impressive 4-0 record early this season.

The Rams — No. 10 in the Class 4A girls soccer CHSAANow.com preseason rankings — took care of business Friday, March 15, at Lakewood Memorial Field with a 2-0 victory over 5A Jeffco League’s Lakewood Tigers.

“It’s kind of unexpected,” Green Mountain senior Olivia Pietro admitted about the undefeated start. “We did good last year, but not this good. It’s good to get off to this start and gives us confidence.”

There was a little lack of confidence when it came to getting the non-league game played. The “bomb cyclone” blizzard that hit Colorado on March 13, put some doubt if Lakewood Memorial Field would be playable, but the field was plowed and cleared to play before the 4 p.m. start.

“We didn’t think we were going to be able to play it, but I’m glad we did,” Green Mountain coach John Barone said.

Barone is also glad to have Pietro on the field for the Rams. The senior is playing her first high school season after suffering three torn ACLs over the past three years. Pietro gave Green Mountain a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute off a centering pass from sophomore Makenzi Dowell.

“This is her fourth try at it,” Barone said of Pietro. “She is just an unbelievable player. She is a special, special player.”

with five tallies in four games.

“My ultimate goal is to play in college, but for right now this is my goal,” said Pietro, who added that she is just excited to be on the field for the Rams playing with classmates she has never been able to play with before.

Dowell scored her fourth goal of the season in the 58th minute off a throw-in from freshman Morgan Falconer that led directly to the sophomore giving the Rams a 2-0 lead.

“Makenzi is just big and fast,” Barone said. “She normally isn’t a starter, but when she gets in she scores goals.”

Sophomore goalie Jayden Johnson picked up the shutout victory in net for Green Mountain.

The impressive start has Barone excited about what the Rams can accomplish this spring in one of the most competitive conferences in 4A. Green Mountain defeated preseason 4A’s No. 1 ranked Silver Creek 2-1 on March 12 at Lakewood Memorial Field.

The last league title for Green Mountain came in 2013.

“Last year we finished seventh out of eight in (4A) Jeffco,” Barone said. “It’s such a tough league, but we really feel

like we can compete this year. In the first time in a while we should be in the top-half and maybe even challenge for it.”

Lakewood (1-3 record) has road games at Vista Ridge and Mullen next week.

Green Mountain has games against Denver South and Air Academy before spring break.

rom seasons is just around the corner and Jefferson County Public Libraries are working to make sure every teen in the county who wants to attend has something to wear.

“Prom can be really expensive, but it’s a really important right of passage for most teens,” said Tana Lucero, teen services librarian at the Arvada Library. “What we want to do is make it easier for teens that might not have the financial wherewithal to participate.”

During the annual Prom Swap, teens can bring unwanted and clean formal wear or accessories to the Library and take another dream outfit home. For each dress tuxedo/ suit, pair of shoes or accessory donated, teens receive

SHANNA FORTIER tickets to trade for a new-tothem item. If they don’t have anything to bring in, they can “buy” tickets with the donation of canned goods — five cans per dress tuxedo/suit, two cans for shoes and one can per accessory.

A seamstress will also be on-site for immediate alterations.

“It’s an opportunity to still have the shopping experience, get something new to them and attend prom within their own budget,” Lucero said.

Community members can

also donate dresses, mens ware, jewelry, shoes and handbags from March 24 to April 6 to any library.

Arra Katona, teen services coordinator for Jeffco Public Library, said items for young men are a need — suits, ties, tuxedos and accessories.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for our community to show the teens that we love and support them and want to help in any way we can,” Lucero said. “Last year we had such an enormous outflowing of generosity, I was

so impressed and so moved at how kind people were.”

The Prom Swap started at the Belmar library five years ago and has since grown to include Arvada, Golden, Standley Lake and Edgewater.

“We just saw a need at other locations,” Katona said, adding that by expanding the program throughout the county, it takes away a transportation barrier. “The library is more than just books, it’s a resource for our community.”

This year’s shopping dates for teens are March 30 at Gold-

Leftover clothing will be donated to the Florence Crittenton High School and the Arvada High Prom Boutique. Canned goods will benefit the Jeffco Action Center and the Community Table — formerly the Arvada Community Food Bank.

The VA has a streamline process to lower your rate. You can also take advantage of this rising real estate market using a VA cash out refinance with a loan up to 100% of the

current value.

Interest rates are still at historical lows, but may be set to rise soon.
